limate change, sea level rise and the future of the Keys were hot-button topics at the last BOCC meeting of the year. The recent Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit in Key West was still fresh in everyone’s mind, including the new sea level projections of 10 to 17 inches near Key West by 2040 and 21 to 40 inches by 2070.

While the summit created a heightened awareness of the precarious position a chain of islands on porous coral rock can find itself in, more importantly, it catalyzed targeted climate adaptation measures to ensure the future of the Keys remains solid.

Municipalities in the Keys are already preparing for this “new normal,” proactively raising roads, installing injection wells, and improving stormwater plans. The county also adopted this mitigation and adaptation mindset a few years ago. The county built the Stock Island Fire Station and the Marathon library with an extra 2 feet of elevation over the code requirement, said Rhonda Haag, the county’s chief resiliency officer.

“We wanted to make sure the fire station and the library wouldn’t get wet.”

Haag confirmed that the county is doing the same preemptive elevation for all new buildings. “It doesn’t cost that much extra when you’re building a new building to elevate up front – just some additional concrete. But, if you wait and try to elevate it after it’s built, it’s too late and much more expensive,” she said.

With all that in mind, the BOCC set the tone at its December meeting about sea level rise. Commissioner Michelle Coldiron acknowledged the new reality in the Keys. She said, “I think we’re finally beyond the fingerpointing. We can’t stop this water, so

The commissioners all agreed that retrofits to old infrastructure and construction of new county buildings needed to keep the new sea level projections in mind. Talking about the life expectancy of new buildings, county administrator Roman Gastesi similarly said, “If you’re building a building that is expected to have a 50-year lifespan, you should make sure it can withstand the conditions that we’re expecting in 50 years.”

Coldiron asked if the new, yet-tobe-built Emergency Operation Center would also be elevated.

“The EOC is a unique animal,” said assistant county administrator Kevin Wilson. “It’s being designed for a 10,000-year storm with storm surges.

As sea level rises, you can anticipate 10,000-year storms to become worse, but we’re building for that.”

Commissioner David Rice agreed that elevations and solar should be the goal for future county construction but also brought up competing priorities in the present. Citing the tremendous fiscal challenges of such an ambitious adaptation strategy, he said, “This is gonna be on the backs of all of us to pay for.”

Fishermen’s Community Hospital wrapped up 2019 with a Giving Society Member Appreciation night hosted at D’Asign Source by the D’Ascanio family. Guests were dazzled and entertained in the showroom filled with magical holiday décor. Carols were sung and background music played by D.J. Ryan Schraffenberger. The night was highlighted by a re-enactment of the hospital’s September groundbreaking ceremony (complete with hardhats and shovels) for members who were unable to attend. Mike Leonard, Chair of Baptist Health Foundation’s Fishermen’s Community Hospital thanked all for attending, and Rick Freeburg, CEO of Mariners and Fishermen’s offered brief remarks before introducing Baptist Health Foundation CEO Alex Villoch, who was first introduced to the Fishermen’s community at the groundbreaking. Villoch spoke about Baptist Health’s four Centers of Excellence, including the state-of-the-art Miami Cancer Institute and innovation leader Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Foundation Director of Development Kim Gregory is organizing a motor coach trip to Miami for interested donors to tour the two facilities. Fishermen’s Community Hospital extends deep gratitude to the D’Ascanio Family for hosting this very special holiday event.

NURSE PRACTITIONER OF THE YEAR Baptist APRN named for her work ‘bridging the gap’ SARA MATTHIS

S

helly Bish talks so fast, and so passionately, it’s difficult to keep up with her as she describes her work, her inspirations, her faith and the vast scope of what she can do.

Just a few weeks ago, Bish was named Top Practitioner of Baptist Health Medical Group in 2019. (For scale, there are 273 APRNs in the Baptist Health System.)

She’s an advanced practitioner registered nurse (APRN) and what she can do is nothing short of astonishing.

“I’ll perform a pap smear, I can serve as a primary care provider, treat ear infections and help patients manage diabetes,” she said, in her rapid-fire delivery from the cafeteria of Baptist Health Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon.

Oh, she can put in sutures, too, as well as take biopsies and even perform orthopedic knee injections.

We’re seated in the cafeteria, which isn’t her normal stomping ground. She and Susan Baker, also an ARPN, run the Baptist Health Convenient Care Clinic.

The clinic is next to Iberia Bank and McDonald’s right off Overseas Highway, in Marathon’s 1st Professional Centre.

She was awarded the honor because of her excellence in patient care and her involvement in the community, or what she likes to call “bridging the gap.”

“It’s all about meeting the needs of the patient and keeping abreast of what those are,” she said. “For example, it’s difficult for women in the Middle Keys to get an appointment with an OB/GYN. I will perform a pap smear.”

In another instance, a Marathon mom couldn’t get an appointment with her young daughter’s pediatrician. Bish saw her as soon as possible.

“She didn’t have to travel to the mainland and she didn’t have to walk into an urgent care center,” Bish said. “That gave the mom peace and comfort. It establishes trust. It meets people where they are at and that’s paramount because it allays fears.”

Baptist Health Convenient Care Clinic normally focuses on acute care — things like a bad case of congestion or flu. But in Marathon’s case, the situation is unique.

Bish has been in nursing for 30 years specializing in pediatrics. She graduated with honors from D’Youville College in Buffalo, New York. She spends extra time furthering her education, and is now set to pursue her doctorate in nursing.

Why not become a doctor?

“Well, I think one of my patients said it best. He sent me a thank you note a few months ago. It said, ‘You have the heart of a nurse and the brains of a doctor,’” she said, smiling.

She does admit, though, to having a special passion for treating children. She has four of her own children, one of whom battled cancer as a teenager — at the same time she was completing her second degree and working full-time. She began caring for one of her most cherished patients, a child with a severe genetic disorder, when the girl was just an infant. She became a part of the family, as she required round-the-clock-care. When the child passed, it was a devastating loss but didn’t impact her faith.

“My strong faith got me through,” she said.

One of Baptist Health’s core missions defines joy as “… internal fulfillment of caring for others ... ” “That’s something I identify with strongly. My work brings me internal fulfillment. It brings me joy. I try to live what I love and love what I live.”

The Keys Weekly had one last question for Bish. What does she want Santa to bring her for the holidays?

“A massage. Or maybe a trip to Disney. I love Disney,” she said.

THE SAGA CONTINUES… 1,300 appeal finished, awaiting decision

I

f push came to shove during a hurricane, could we all get out on time? What if there were more people to evacuate? That was the initial question at the administrative appeal case over 1,300 building permits for workforce housing.

In May 2018, as a response to Irma and the shortage of workforce housing, then-Gov. Rick Scott directed the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) to allocate 1,300 new permits to local governments to address the dire lack of workforce housing in the Keys.

Marathon, Key West and Islamorada all accepted their maximum 300 permits allocation and began to amend their comprehensive plans to allow for the additional units. In November 2018, three residents independently challenged these decisions. The challenges were bundled into one hearing, which took place in Marathon last week.

Statewide, building permits are limited by ROGO to ensure timely evacuation, said George Garrett, the City of Marathon planning director. A 2012 hurricane evacuation study estimated that it would take 17.5 hours to evacuate visitors during Phase 1 preceding a hurricane and 17.5 hours to evacuate permanent residents during Phase 2. Florida statutes require safe evacuation of visitors and residents within 24 hours each, so 48 hours total. The gaps between the 17.5-hour estimates and the 24-hour statutory requirements justified the DEO’s issuance of the 1,300 additional permits. Garrett said, “They estimated it would take about 17.5 hours to evacuate everyone in the Keys. The statutory requirement is 24 hours, so 6.5 hours leeway equates to additional cars on the roads, which equates to additional housing being allocated.”

The municipalities even contemplated placing deed restrictions on the new permits, requiring residents and tenants to evacuate during Phase 1 (generally for visitors) instead of Phase 2 (generally for permanent residents) to ease the burden on the roads during an emergency.

Garrett explained how the face of the administrative challenge was all about the timing of this safe evacuation. Asking permanent residents to evacuate during Phase 1 instead of Phase 2 “cheated” statutory requirements, the petitioners argued. Garrett disagreed. He said, “Ok, so you’re going to tell me, even if we have to evacuate our permanent population safely, I’m prohibited from telling people to leave early?” Garrett noted that Marathon already asks some permanent residents living in low-lying homes to leave early, and has since the 2012 study.

As the hearing wore on, it became clear that there were more than hurricanes on people’s minds. Because the Keys are an Area of Critical State Concern, changes to comprehensive plans are reviewed against the principles of environmental capacity, water quality and

habitat protection, Garrett said. Petitioners argued that the Keys are at, or beyond, their carrying capacity and that the additional housing permits should be denied.

The additional arguments forced Marathon city attorney David Migut to request an increased ceiling on legal fees, up to $350,000, from the city council. “I hope the fees don’t get that high,” said Migut.

“Now we’re at or slightly above $200,000, but they’ve made more arguments, and we have to address those.” Garrett agreed, “We did not anticipate the case going the way it has gone. I don’t know if they did, either. We probably spent more time dealing with water quality stuff in hearings last week than we did with other aspects, like actual hurricane evacuation.”

Garrett said the core issue is the lack of workforce housing in the Keys. He said, “At this point, we have very limited additional workforce housing allocations and we have a significant workforce housing deficit.”

This dearth is what prompted the issuance of the 1,300 permits in the first place and motivates the municipalities’ argument. While hurricane evacuation, water quality and carrying capacity must be considered, the cities argued that each of their decisions to accept their 300 units was not only legal, but necessary in order to keep workers in local businesses. Garrett said, “It really is a workforce issue, and at that point, it becomes an issue of sustaining the economy.”

Now that the hearing is finished, the 15,000-odd pages of evidence will be analyzed along with court transcripts. The next steps are receipt of the final transcript within 30 days. Then, both parties will have 30 days to propose their recommended order to the judge. She can utilize one, both, a combination, or none of the recommendations in issuing her recommended order to the DEO. Finally, the secretary of the DEO will issue a final order. Garrett expects that to come in April 2020.

Garrett noted that, if successful, Marathon was eager and ready to utilize their allotment. “We cannot issue building rights if we don’t have permits. So, the developers are sitting there waiting.” Marathon has approximately 220 units that have already been approved for site planning and that are ready to be developed. All that’s needed to start building is a building allocation.

The BOCC is waiting to see the outcome of the administrative appeal before accepting the county’s 300 on behalf of unincorporated Monroe. Smaller municipalities like Key Colony Beach and Layton received a combined 100 units.

If this outcome is appealed as a matter of law, the 1st District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee will have to hear the case.

y any standard, Sombrero Beach has been limping along since Hurricane Irma picked up most of the sand and deposited it across the street, wrecking most of the infrastructure in the process. The city has spent $1.5 million of its own funds to restore it, and make it better — opening first one half, and now the entire park to the community as repairs were made. Marathon girl meets her match

M

arathon’s Sutton Sayer, 8, was starstruck to meet Sutton Foster, a multiple Tony Award winner, recently after Foster’s performance at the Tennessee Williams Theater.

Sutton’s mother, Allison, said the whole family is a fan of Foster’s work and when searching around for names for the baby in her belly, the name “Sutton” stuck.

The local Sutton, 8, is doing a good job following in her role model’s footsteps. She regularly performs around town and leads the elementary chorus in the original “Fred the Groovy Christmas Tree” song composed by music teacher Jack Louden.

“Sutton wrote Sutton Foster a letter before the performance in Key West and her grandmother took it up to one of the theater employees,” Allison said. “After the show, they invited my daughter back to meet her.”

Allison said the family is looking forward to the revival of “Music Man” set to take Broadway soon, starring Foster and Hugh Jackman.

D

ecember 19, in the piratical history books, has been an active one in the shallow waters surrounding the Florida Keys. In 1818, the Emma Sophia, sailing from Hamburg to Havana, was sailing between the Bahamas and Cay Sal banks when she encountered a pirate schooner. The ship, said to have been 30 tons and armed with one cannon, was manned by a crew of 30 pirates who took command of the Emma Sophia and brought her to a small port formed by “the Florida Isles and the Martyr’s Reef.” The closest naturally occurring deep harbors suitable for such an engagement might have been at Bahia Honda or Knights Key, among a short list of others.

William Savage, a member of the Emma Sophia’s crew, would have his account of the event published in the Boston Daily Advertiser “Marine Journal” on Feb. 3, 1819. Savage wrote, “Davis, the spokesman, drew his knife and swore, that every man should die, unless he found the money, and first he would hang the supercargo.

He called for a rope, which he had brought on board, fitted with a hangman’s noose, sent a man up the mizzen yard and rove it and brought the noose down — and one man held it, and another stood ready to hoist.

Now, said Davis, tell me where is the money, where are your diamonds, or I will hang you this minute. In vain I repeated I had nothing more but my watch, which I offered and he refused.

Once more, said he, will you tell? I have nothing to tell, said I. On with the rope, said the villain, and hoist away. The fellow with the noose came towards me, and I sprang overboard. They took me up, after some time apparently insen-

sible. They took off all my cloaths (sic), and laid me on my back on deck, naked as I was born, except having a blanket thrown over me.

Here I laid five hours without moving hand or foot. Meanwhile they robbed us of every thing of the least value.”

While no one aboard the Emma Sophia lost their lives, the same could not be said for the second piratical event that occurred on the same date nine years later, involving the pirate slaver Guerrero. A letter written on July 31, 1827, from a British officer in Havana to another in London, read in part, “The illicit slave trader from this port … appears to be about to resume its former activity, no less than four Spanish vessels having during the present month sailed are the brigs Guerrero… She is well armed, and has a crew of ninety men; and there can be little doubt that her purpose is to plunder of their cargoes of slaves any weaker vessels that she may fall in with in the coast of Africa.”

On Dec. 19, 1827, Lt. Edward Holland and the 56-man crew aboard the H.B.M. (His Britannic Majesty) Schooner Nimble were patrolling the Florida Straits 250 miles north of Havana when a suspicious looking brig off the coast of Orange Cay, Bahamas was spotted. The noon entry into the Nimble’s log read, “Observed stranger to be a suspicious looking brig. I set topsail, cleared (the deck) for action & fired two guns to bring stranger to whom we observed hauling up to avoid us; made more sail.”

An exchange of cannon and musketry fire occurred between the two ships until the Guerrero feigned surrender by firing a blank and flashing a conciliatory light causing the Nimble to cease fire.

The Guerrero attempted another run, only to slam into Carsyfort Reef at full sail.

According to an 1831 edition of the United States Service Magazine, “The masts of the chase were heard to fall with a tremendous crash, followed with a horrid yell from those on board, which left no doubt of her being a Guineaman.” The ship’s hull split open and when the Guerrero filled with water, 41 Africans shackled in the ship’s hold drowned where they were chained. The Niles Weekly Register reported, “The cries of 561 slaves and crew were appalling beyond description.”

he Monroe County Democrats are disappointed in Governor Ron DeSantis’s choice to interfere and attempt to fix the outcome of a local Monroe County election.

By appointing one of the candidates for the County Commission seat formerly held by Danny Kolhage, the Governor has used his executive power to put his thumb on the scale by creating a false sense of incumbency.

Given that Governor DeSantis has ignored his duty to act in an impartial manner with regards to a local election, we call on Craig Cates to reject this appointment and allow the voters of Monroe County to determine who should hold this seat. Anything less is a direct assault on the democratic process.

Teresa Alo 1980-2019

It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our much beloved eldest daughter Teresa Sophia Alo. She was born Oct. 23, 1980 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.

She passed away at Baptist Hospital in Miami, Florida on Nov. 28, 2019.

She was a graduate of Marathon High School and attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She was the owner of Conch Cleaning in Marathon.

Teresa will be remembered for her outgoing personality — full of life, beautiful laughter, always being thoughtful and helpful to her family and friends. She will be missed by all those whom she has touched and will always be in our hearts.

Teresa is survived by her father, Orlando Alo De Paula; mother, Sophia Alo; grandmother, Winifret Tsapoitis; sister, Christina Maria Alo; brother, Tommy Orlando Alo; niece, Malyia Michelle Harris; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

We, the Alo family, wish to thank all who reached out by phone, text, and in person to help us say goodbye to our daughter.

T

he mistletoe’s hung, the cookies are baked, and the tree is lit. And underneath that tree? Lots of new stuff. Wrapped up in lots of other

stuff.

The tradition of opening presents at Christmas is long rooted in American culture. People love to give and receive colorful gifts decked out in bows and glitter. It brings a lot of joy.

But, after the excitement has subsided, we’re left with a lot of extra wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, decorations, and other stuff that gets tossed in the trash.

The Recycling Center at Stanford University has reported that Americans throw away 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than at any other time in the year. Aside from gift wrap, when you take into account holiday

parties and the tremendous amount of single use plastic cups, plates, and silverware used, it’s no wonder that the season of merriment is also a season of wastefulness. But it doesn’t have to be.

The first step to a more sustainable holiday is to curb consumption. “Refuse” can mean buying less, not using plastic bags for your shopping, or serving your holiday dinner on real plates instead of paper ones. When you wrap presents, use green and eco-friendly gift wrapping options. And lastly, recycle. But do it right.

While recycling rules vary by community and recycling center*, these general guidelines for common holiday items can help take away some confusion. Use it to see what is and isn’t recyclable from the holidays.

he Keys Weekly went out with a very exact plan to get local kids to ask US questions about Santa; or, if we weren’t getting there with that line of questioning, queries about Elf on the Shelf. Yeah, it was as successful as herding cats during a fireworks show. The setting was Crane Point Hammock’s Winter Wonderland and the kids were noticeably and understandably distracted by the delights.

A VISIT WITH MARATHON’S PAST

Former Faro Blanco owner returns for a visit SARA MATTHIS

im Kelsey speaks quietly, often tucking his hands into the front pockets of his black jeans. He has a pure white mustache and a head of white hair. He looks ‌ normal. But then he starts to tell stories and the most outrageous tales come tumbling out.

A solid 78% of them are not suitable for a family newspaper.

Except, maybe, this one: “The first time I saw Faro Blanco, we drove in, and the Key Lime Pie band was playing “Lets Get Drunk and Screw� — I had never heard that before — and there were women running around in bikinis, and all the guys drove Mercedes or a Rolls Royce and had on gold Rolexes and gold coins on chains around their necks. And then Nick Aldacosta pulled up in his mullet wagon — a ’62 Pontiac nose with a plywood bed — leaking stuff all over the ground. I looked at the Realtor and said, ‘Sold!’�

It was the beginning of an 11-year run — from 1979 to 1990 — captaining the rollicking ship that was Faro Blanco Resort in those days. He had his beloved late wife, Krista, by his side and they lived in the lighthouse keeper’s quarters that was once attached to the iconic light on the dock. His daughter, Katie, had the run of the joint — signing chits for lunch at the bar. “All the employees would keep an eye out and tell me to knock it off occasionally,� Katie said.

Jim and Katie, along with her husband and sons, visited Marathon two weeks ago to celebrate a bunch of family birthdays. Jim took the opportunity to list all the people who helped him make the resort successful: Lloyd, who would sling a bosun chair over the lighthouse and paint it every year; columnist Dick Bradley, who wrote about Faro in the “Motor Boating and Sailing” magazine (and would later become the resort’s publicist and marketing director); Mitch Bell, who turned the restaurant around “so people would stop yelling at me in public”; Eric and Susan Ball, who owned Faro Blanco and continued to operate The Golden Nugget jewelry store on the premises after Jim bought it.

The deal was put together on a shoestring and a prayer — he was to collect about $400,000 as a deposit. Kelsey was the first to admit, he missed the mark by a mile. Jim called Eric the day he was supposed to fly back to the Keys … without the money.

“I told him. And he was quiet, and then said to wait a minute. So, I’m holding the phone and I hear a bunch of yelling. He finally gets back on the phone, and said, ‘The deal is still on.

I’m just mad because I just went and bought a big boat.’”

It was a wild time in Marathon. It was hardly a spot on the tourist map yet, and filled with a combination of weekend weed smugglers and conservative commercial fishermen.

“I had no idea what I was doing and I had no money,” Jim said, smiling in the shadow of the new Lighthouse Grill at the Hyatt Place and Faro Blanco Resort.

Jim recalls collecting all of the available funds into a bank bag and walking into the lobby. “The lady would shake her head and say, ‘it’s not enough.’” So he would make another pass through the resort, collecting slip rent and raiding cash drawers. “And then, all of a sudden, we were a success.” And by “sudden,” he means about six or seven years.

“It was such an important part of our life. We have a lot of good memories of Marathon,” said Susan, choking up during the phone interview from New Smyrna Beach.

“They call it Faro Blanco North,” said Katie, laughing. She went on to open her own business, a spa — first in the family-owned resort, and now a standalone business. Her dad spends his retirement buying and refurbishing classic cars, a nod to his career before he became a resort wrangler.

One last question, then, for Jim. “Have you ever had as much fun?”

“No,” he said, smiling a tad wistfully.

If you ever have the good fortune to meet Jim … please, please ask him the story about the rat. Only he can tell it.

It was the mid-’80s when Jim conceived of the condos that still stand today. It became THE place to be for celebrities like Don Johnson and Joe Namath. Through it all, he developed a personal relationship with Eric and Susan Ball.

“I was very glad to help him in any way I could — for selfish and unselfish reasons,” Eric said, laughing. “Selfish, because I didn’t want to own Faro Blanco again. And Jim was trying so hard to make it go, you just had to help him every way, shape or form.”

In fact, Jim took the Ball family, and many others, with him when he moved to New Smyrna Beach, where he purchased another resort, The Riverside Hotel and Spa, which he has since sold.

They still get together regularly for dinner and shenanigans, sometimes as many as three dozen transplants, all seemingly drawn to Jim’s definition of good people and good times.

Jim Kelsey recalls the original boat races, headquartered at Faro Blanco Resort.

The resort offered all the best amenities — including flights over the reef and resort. Joe Namath, Don Johnson and other celebrities made Faro their hangout, alongside all of the locals.

oshua Kogut explained what a mosquito operation entails: There is no mosquito “season.” That’s why we conduct operations year-round, but our busiest time is typically between March and October.

Preparations for an aerial mission are in-depth. It begins with a field inspector on the ground searching for mosquito larvae and flying adult mosquitoes. An inspector who finds an area that is too large to treat by hand places an electronic request to the Aerial Department for an aerial larvicide or adulticide mission. Given that there are multiple field inspectors throughout the Keys, the aerial staff is usually in a holding pattern until there are enough treatments in one area to launch an aerial operation.

I work closely with the director of operations who is responsible for giving us the green light to start a mission. Upon receiving the green light, the Aerial Department begins putting together a formal flight briefing, a weather review and a risk assessment – this ensures that each flight is conducted in the safest way possible. This assessment sometimes means that we must scrub the flight.

Once that is completed, a classroomstyle mission briefing is given to all members of the aerial staff who will be involved in that day’s mission.

After that, the pilots will perform their aircraft checks while the ground crew and maintenance teams load product and fuel.

In the busier summer months,

we may fly two to three helicopters simultaneously on any given day. One trip averages 30 to 40 minutes.

Eighty-five percent of the aerial missions we complete use a granular naturally-occurring larvicide that is environmentally friendly and allows us to kill the mosquito before it becomes a flying, biting adult. On rare occasions we may need to conduct adulticide missions, meaning we are treating biting adult mosquitoes. When these missions occur, we spray at a rate of only 0.75 ounces of active ingredient per acre, utilizing specialized holding tanks and spray heads that reduce the liquid down to very tiny droplets.

rane Point Museum put on a fabulous event — Winter Wonderland — for the community on Dec. 15. Hundreds turned out to partake in visits with Santa, “sleigh” rides through the hammock, a turn sitting on a “Reindeer” pony, roasted chestnuts and even chocolate-dunked marshmallows and popcorn. Just a few years old, this is one of the most popular Christmas parties in Marathon.

HOLIDAY MUSIC Tunes for the Christmas Spirit…

I

love the holidays. Not only does the advent of Advent signal the end of hurricane season (YES!!!), it also means that radio stations and businesses are playing a mix of holiday songs! I love the sounds of the season, from the classics to the contemporary, and here are a few of my all-time favorites that I hope bring you comfort and joy this holiday season!

• “Christmas All Over Again” – Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

This cool Yule rocker combines surf and Motown influences into a big Phil Spector-sized bag of Christmas goodies! Great lines abound throughout – about long distance relatives, Tom sings, “Yeah, I kinda miss them, I just don’t want to kiss them!” And, “I hope you have a good one, I hope Mama gets her shopping done.” And the end is all a rocker can hope for, as Tom tells us his wish list: “I want a new Rickenbacker guitar… a couple of Fender Bassmans… a Chuck Berry songbook….”

• “You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” – Thurl Ravenscroft, from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" Because Boris Karloff narrated the TV special (CBS, 1966) and was the voice of the Grinch, people thought he also sang the character’s centerpiece song. The only problem was Boris Karloff couldn’t sing. The issue was made worse by the omission of Mr. Ravenscroft’s name from the credits.

Dr. Seuss apologized for this omission profusely, and wrote letters to columnists nationwide telling them it was Ravenscroft who sang the song.

The combination of his incredible baritone and the perfect orchestral arrangement made this song a part of every Christmas for me since 1966. An aside: I just learned that Mr. Ravenscroft was also the voice of Tony the Tiger for more than 50 years — that’s GGGRREEEAAATTTT! • “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings” – Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLachlan. Acoustic guitars, a double bass, and brush percussion are the spare elements accompanying the voices of the Barenaked Ladies and the angelic Sarah McLachlan. It’s uptempo, it’s folksy, it’s jazzy, and it warms the soul like hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day.

• “HappyXmas/War is Over” – John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The perfect Peace on Earth Christmas song was a special gift to all of us.

It continues to serve as a reminder

of the genius of Lennon and how much so many still miss him… and just how appropriate his words are still today.

• “The Twelve Days of ChristJOHN mas” – Straight BARTUS No Chaser. This a capella men’s chois a City of Mararus from Indiana thon councilblows the doors man. He also is off of this Christa musician who performs around mas classic and takes it to places town. For more see johnbartus. barely imaginable com by normal human beings. Do yourself a huge favor and look this one up on YouTube. You’ll be blown away – trust me on this. Honorable mention goes to Bob Rivers’ Twisted Tunes version of this song.

• “I Believe In Father Christmas” – Greg Lake. There is probably no better song that takes on the commercialization of Christmas than this 1975 classic from Greg Lake (of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fame). As Lake said in an interview with Mojo magazine, “I find it appalling when people say it's politically incorrect to talk about Christmas, you've got to talk about ‘The Holiday Season.’ Christmas was a time of family warmth and love. There was a feeling of forgiveness, acceptance. And I do believe in Father Christmas.”

• “Sleigh Ride” – Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. Yeah, a lot of acts have done this song. Yeah, there are lyrics. But you can sing them in your head while listening to the incredible instrumental arrangement by Fiedler and the Boston Pops. From sleigh bells to the clip-clop of horse hooves to the trumpet’s horse whinny, this song makes a person long to bundle up and take a one-horse open sleigh … even if that person never grew up around snow!

There are so many more that deserve mention, from Bing’s “White Christmas” to Gene Autry’s “Rudolph” to Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song.”

There’s “Holly Jolly Christmas” from Burl Ives, “Blue Christmas” from Elvis, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

by Andy Williams, the Bing Crosby and David Bowie duet on “Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank Sinatra or James Taylor. And we can’t leave out the Chipmunks! Whatever tunes are the soundtrack to your holiday season, may you have the Merriest of Christmases and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I

t had to be done. It was time. Since 1968, John Bartus — rocker, publisher, Keys Weekly columnist and Marathon Councilman — has worn a ponytail. On Dec. 16, he auctioned off the rights to cut it off, and to shave his head. The beneficiary of the haircut (besides Bartus himself, who looks dapper and decades younger) is Presents in Paradise, a local nonprofit that rises up each year to make Christmas happy for lots of local kids. John Grouten paid $1,000 for the haircut, and local attorney Rich Malafy paid $600 for the right to shave his head, which was performed by proxy by Marathon Weekly editor Sara Matthis. It’s important to note that he didn’t bleed but there were plenty of raunchy innuendos.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. My parents moved from Marathon to Pennsylvania for one year and then returned to Marathon.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My all-time favorite teacher was my fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Thompson. She always put a fun spin to learning, and was a great, hardworking teacher.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education is what makes students better, it helps with socializing and communication. It increases a student’s learning and helps them want to learn and like to learn.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? I have not got to freshman year yet, but one thing I know now that I didn’t in sixth grade is that even though you’re in middle school, you still study and work hard.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I am in Z-Club and I play volleyball.

What are your plans after high school? To go to college and study to become an elementary art teacher.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MMS? I want to be remembered as Taylor Sipe, not Logan or Kayla Sipe.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? Playing volleyball or hanging out with friends.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? No, I enjoy cold weather and snow. I hope to go somewhere a bit cooler.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I want to have finished college, live in a house of my own, and have a family of my own.
