L

ately, we’ve had some picturesque Florida Keys weather with variable winds and the most vibrantly orange sunsets that seem to melt below the water line. To go along with it, the sunny 75-degree temperatures have kept most of my cold-weather clothing in storage. I had two charters in the backcountry this week and went out offshore with some friends once as well. Bait was plentiful and the fish were active, to say the least.

On my 6-hour trip on Nov. 25, we ventured out into the Gulf in search of Spanish mackerels. We caught anywhere from 30 to 40 fish from 2 to 6 pounds with several nice trout and snappers mixed in. Following the mackerel blitz we put out a shark rod and caught two big lemons, one of which easily made the 200-pound mark. Afterward we ventured back to a few of the islands close to the Everglades National Park boundary that produced snook, juvenile goliath groupers, and more snapper.

The one-day I went offshore this week, there were ballyhoos for miles along the reef-line with frigate birds, pelicans, dolphin, mackerel and sailfish actively feeding on them. Find the bait, and you will find the fish, a wise man once said. That was the classic case here. We ended up catching one sailfish with two more missed opportunities and some beautiful mutton snappers up to 15 pounds for dinner. We cooked up the snapper that evening on a cast-iron skillet with butter and complete seasoning … it was knockyour-socks-off delicious!

n 2009-2010, attorney Don Barrett served as chief assistant state attorney under Dennis Ward, who is the current Monroe County state attorney, and who also held the position from 2008 to 2012. Barrett has filed paperwork with the state to challenge Ward for the job in 2020.

“The office needs a strong leader with a great deal of varied experience” Barrett said. “I’ve been practicing for 23 years — about half that as a prosecutor and the other half as a defense attorney. I have a wide perspective on all the issues.”

Barrett said if elected, the office will focus more on prosecuting violent crimes and crimes against persons, especially those who are most vulnerable, and less on marine violations. “I don’t mean the serious trap-robbing cases, but the cases of when a tourist comes here and catches an undersized fish because they don’t know the rules,” Barrett said.

He also wants to address addiction.

“In my 20 years, I feel like the majority of cases that come through are rooted in either mental health issues or addiction issues, whether that’s drugs or alcohol. In cases where it’s a victimless crime, and the real issue is drug addiction, I think the state attorney and other players in the justice system should address the root, rather than warehousing people in jails,” Barrett said, a Democrat.

to file his re-election paperwork in the new year. If elected, it would be his third term. His focus this term, he said, has been school safety and protecting natural resources.

“Right after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, I contacted former Key West Police Chief Donie Lee and Sheriff Rick Ramsay,” he said. “I said ‘We need to get together with the school district and look at the security of our schools.’” Ward, a Republican, said he served on a task force that improved camera coverage, classroom modifications, safe spaces and drills.

Ward said he’s proud of his record prosecuting natural resource violations whether it’s undersized lobster or fish and stone crab violations.

“Before, everything was just a slap on the wrist,” Ward said.

“Now, if you have three lobster over the limit, our plea offer is going to include jail time.”

Barrett graduated from Stetson University College of Law in 1996 and moved to the Keys the first time in 2001. In 2014, Barrett challenged Circuit Judge Mark Jones and was defeated.

Ward is a Marine Corps veteran and was a Miami Beach police officer for decades before becoming an attorney. He was elected state attorney in 2008, lost to Catherine Vogel in 2012, and was re-elected in 2016.

he Islamorada Chamber of Commerce’s youth ambassadors are tackling the balloon problem via a project that aims to install signage.

Youth ambassadors Kai Guth and Ali Beth Wilson went before Islamorada Village Council during a Nov. 21 meeting at Founders Park Community Center to discuss their plans to sell filtered water during Holiday Fest on Dec. 6 at Founders Park. Proceeds from sales would go to purchase “No Balloons — Protect Our Wildlife” signs. Wild animals often believe balloons are food; eating the plastic or vinyl can kill them.

“As youth ambassadors, we want to share the message with students in our schools and ask them to make sure that their parents are aware of the problem by doing something as simple as asking them not to have balloons at their next birthday party,” Guth said. “We are also looking for ideas to share with students about other options to use in place of balloons — like big colorful flowers made from tissue paper or the new reusable vinyl balloons.”

Wilson said they’d like to place signs on the tiki huts at Founders Park Beach where birthday parties are held. Mayor Deb Gillis gave the two permission for the project.

The Tavernier Community Association will conduct a general membership meeting on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Tavernier Volunteer Fire Department, located at 151 Marine Avenue, Tavernier. Dr. James Boilini, member of the Monroe County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, will be addressing the meeting and responding to questions.

The meeting is open to the public and audience questions and comments are welcome. The Tavernier Community Association is organized to provide a community voice to represent the needs and desires of the Tavernier community.

Santa visit, classic TV planned for library Santa Claus is coming to town, as he’s set to visit Islamorada Library on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. Children will be able to tell St. Nick their Christmas wishes, enjoy hot cocoa, cookies and popcorn while watching classic holiday TV fare like the "Charlie Brown Christmas" special. All ages are welcome, though children should be accompanied by an adult. The event is free and no registration is required. More information about Islamorada Library or its events is at 305-664-4645. ‘Olde Timer’s Christmas' features classic desserts The Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys celebrates with its 29th annual “Olde Timer’s Christmas” during the December history program.

n an attempt to create a sub-tropical getaway in the northern Keys, one accessible by a proposed six-lane highway connected to Card Sound Road, the City of Islandia was incorporated as a municipality of Dade County on Dec. 6, 1960. The highway would have driven through what is today Ocean Reef. Islandia was not a single locale, but an umbrella identifier that included 33 islands that included Elliott Key. Creating a resort area was not the only ambition. There was also a plan to create Seadade, a major seaport that would necessitate the dredging of a 40-foot-deep channel through Biscayne Bay. The fight between those seeking to construct a tourist Mecca and those hoping to preserve the idyllic beauty proved contentious. Congress, led by Rep. Dante Fascell, drafted a bill to create Biscayne National Monument in order to protect “a rare combination of terrestrial, marine, and amphibious life in a tropical setting of great natural beauty.” The bill was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on Oct. 18, 1968. The largely forgotten Islandia is now part of Biscayne National Park.

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

My name is Joe Weatherby. I have been a professional captain, diver, fisherman, snorkeler, unsuccessful treasure hunter and constant conservationist in the Florida Keys and Key West for over 30 years.

I have spent my entire adult life working in and around these waters, primarily engaged in augmenting fishing and diving opportunities through the creation of artificial reefs. I initially joined the SAC to make sure artificial reefs were not eliminated as part of a solution to rapidly disappearing marine habitat.

Given the catastrophic decline in the state of our environment, I’m not surprised this community is up in arms.

I did not oppose the initial formation of the FKNMS, as I believed we needed to do SOMETHING. Now, 30 years on, things are worse environmentally, but I believe the causes for this are likely bigger than we are currently considering. The Restoration Blueprint is in DRAFT form.

I have been asked to listen to my community’s comments regarding especially scuba diving activities in the Lower Keys. I am doing that. Sanctuary officials have said repeatedly that after this first round of comments, written and oral, there would be another version or more of the Blueprint. I expect that.

I understand the mistrust that exists, given the turbulent history between the FKNMS and the community. I also regularly see the reef dead and dying and believe that all who live here should attend the meetings and provide written and oral comment to make things better. I do not believe that the FKNMS is correct regarding many of the suggestions offered in the Blueprint, but the sanctuary has the distinction of being the only group trying to plan something better.

I sat in many, many meetings listening to science and offering input based on years of observation underwater. I listened to people I respect offer their own observations as well.

I, too, have honed my own powers of observation in the water through years of practice.

There are some things I can see: I can see that artificial reefs work and work well. The notion often put forth that “the jury is still out on artificial reefs” is nonsense. The verdict on artificial reefs has been in for centuries. The artificial reefs deployed in the FKNMS may be the only observable working changes in the FKNMS since the beginning. The State of Florida, with over 2,500 permitted artificial reefs and 400 ships deployed since the mid-‘80s, is in the artificial reefs business because it works. We need more NOW! As stated, I’m not a scientist, and certainly not a fisheries biologist. But I do see fish stocks declining. I haven’t seen a Nassau grouper in the water in 10 years. My (unexpressed) ideas around fisheries center around not killing fish when they’re pregnant. When I hear (never observed) of chumming for pregnant mutton snapper with amberjack roe, my instinct is that we ought to be looking at the issue a little more closely.

At every single meeting I’ve attended over the years the first and most prominent issue cited by all in the room is water quality. We all agree that this is issue number 1, yet it’s not even mentioned in the Restoration Blueprint. It absolutely needs to be. We have spent millions of dollars on studies, salaries, vehicles, travel and marketing of our Sanctuary.

A water test costs $100, yet we do not use them. I think the stinky and alternately teacolored or electric lime-green liquid coming south from Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee, the St. Lucie and Everglades through the sluices is not water at all, but toxic waste. We’ve had the coral version of ebola coming down the east coast and biblical plague of fish die-offs down the west. There’s poison in our water. And we need to address that before we do anything else in the marine sanctuary that is our shared backyard.

‘NOW IS TIME TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD’

he Board of Directors of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Foundation encourages you to participate in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s Restoration Blueprint process. Now is the time to have your voice heard to determine the management actions and tools that will protect our marine environment that supports our local economy and way of life.

The foundation works alongside, yet independently of, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, focusing on the restoration and management of our most valuable asset, the marine world we all share.

As a nonprofit, we look forward to working with everyone to support responsible, sustainable marine activity within the Keys.

In response to public concerns about threats facing the Florida Keys, the Sanctuary released its Restoration Blueprint, and, as the guiding interest of the foundation, we lend our support to this endeavor. Successful management of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary relies on all of us: residents, businesses, as well as tourists. Together, we can be part of the solution.

We are all aware of the assaults on our marine system. In an effort to protect and restore critical marine habitats in the Florida Keys, the sanctuary is proposing changes to its boundary, marine zones, regulations and management plan that embodies what has been learned through more than 20 years of cutting-edge science, technical experience and local community involvement. The proposals before us now are a result of more than 70 public meetings and 200 recommendations from the Sanctuary Advisory Council, which is composed of local citizens. In short, the alternatives offered to the current management plan and tools were devised transparently, and in concert with citizens and stakeholders.

The ecosystem-based approach provides sanctuary management with the platform to address a wide variety of issues including the coral reef ecosystem, water quality and increased human use with the aim of long-term sustainability. Action is needed to help the Florida Keys marine environment recover and become more resilient. We need our marine environment for our own economic stability.

In July of this year, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation released a study showing that economic activity generated by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is responsible for contributing $4.4 billion and 43,000 jobs across the state of Florida, with 60% of jobs in the Florida Keys connected to the marine ecosystem. Understanding the economic impact of the sanctuary’s resources is critical. The sanctuary is an irreplaceable treasure that will require careful management to maintain and enhance its splendor.

The process of managing our marine system relies on input from you. The Restoration Blueprint is easily viewable online at www. floridakeys.noaa.gov/blueprint. An interactive map enables citizens to move to areas that may be of particular interest, recognizing that residents of Key Largo may have comments that a resident of Key West would not. Key to this public process is the word comment. The website provides instruction on how to present comments in response to the sanctuary’s proposals, and this portal is open until the end of January.

As representatives of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, we ask you to participate. The Restoration Blueprint is complex by nature of the needs for access while sustaining the valuable resources. It will take all of us to find a balance. We do, however, believe the time is past due to act.

The Restoration Blueprint is a starting point for all of us to become involved. Our foundation is involved daily in the betterment of our marine environment. The Restoration Blueprint now enables you to be involved as well at this critical time.

Please help us chart a viable future and join us in support of meaningful change for the Florida Keys and the waters that surround us.

Sculpture donated to bird sanctuary on display in gallery JIM McCARTHY

onors near and far have supported the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center and founder Laura Quinn’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release birds back into the wild. The support has come in various forms, including a bronze and stainless steel sculpture awaiting a new suitor.

The sculpture, created by Cobert C. Collins, was presented to the bird center by a donor in 1990. Records from the donation show that a sculpture and an oil painting were given to the center. The 6-foot sculpture has been at the nonprofit’s maintenance facility in Tavernier. Today, the work stands at Carmen Kelley’s Key Largo Art Gallery, MM 103, bayside. “We wanted to put it somewhere where it could be truly admired,” said executive director Jordan Budnik. “We reached out to Carmen and she was generous enough to display it for us. It’s quite a unique piece that we eventually want to find a good home for.”

Collins’ sculptures and collections span four continents, over 20 public and private facilities and more than 3,000 homes.

Originating a unique technique of modeling stainless steel and gold silica bronze through a direct welding process, his work flows together by the use of an “S” line to reflect the interplay of intimate relationships.

Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1924, he joined the army during World War II, becoming a paratrooper and ranger in the 101st Airborne Division. After the war, he enrolled at the University of Missouri, where he discovered art, writing and clay.

Earning degrees in fine arts and psychology, he moved to graduate work in art and occupational therapy. He moved to upstate New York where he founded an artists consortium of local painters and sculptors, and he also began displaying his work at the Arnot Art Gallery in Elmira, New York. He then moved to West Palm Beach, where he continued his journey the next 30 years as a prolific sculptor.

Collins passed away in Delaware, Ohio in March 2013. While a large portion of his work remains at the Westerville Ohio Parks and Recreation Foundation, his work can also be found in Florida, as well as in France and Switzerland.

“When you look at what he chose to sculpt, and even in all the quotes you can find from him, he focuses on messages of positivity and relationships between human beings,” Budnik said. “His sculptures include women and children and people dancing. It’s absolutely beautiful.

And since this artwork is part bronze, the sculpture is alive in the sense that it’ll change with age.”

Budnik says the center is grateful for the generosity of space provided by Carmen and Tere Kelley at their gallery.

“We want it to be in a place that it can be truly admired,” she said. “We want it to be in a good home while at the same time preserving history.”

S

tudents, teachers and administrators at Plantation Key School entered through the doors to a new state-of-the-art facility at MM 90, bayside, in Tavernier last January. With it came new technology and 21st century learning tools as well facilities such as a gym, which the old facility didn’t have, an playground and more.

Guiding the school into a new era is principal Lisa Taylor, who notes that it’s been a great start to the first full school year in the new building.

“We are so excited to be in our new building,” she said. “It is our happy place for learning.”

The Upper Keys Weekly recently checked in with Taylor to see how things have gone so far and to learn more about the principal.

Full name? Do you have a nickname?

Lisa Taylor. My oldest nephew, Nick, called me “Tu Tu “when he first talked, and it stuck.

What are some fun and exciting things happening at PKS? We are all enjoying every day in the new building.

We have exciting programs this year to inspire students to be the best they can be. Readers are Leaders and Superstar Math are inspirational programs that provide each student with a personal goal. Students really enjoy the special classroom areas like Science on a Sphere, Keys Café, Think Tank, Artistry, Performance Center and the Motion Lab. Think Tank focuses on marine life and water quality. Physical Science, Life Science, Environmental Science and Robotics are offered in our Stem Science classes. Cross curricular classroom

transformations that provide motivating, blended learning with engaging activities are students’ favorite days. I think the students will tell everyone the most fun and exciting event was opening the playgrounds, ball fields and courts! Evening events like Hispanic Heritage Night, volleyball games, Halloween Bingo, Middle School dances, and student performances focused on American Founders Month. The most exciting news is there is so much more to come!

How’s phase two of construction at the school going? The construction is almost complete! We will be excited to host a grand opening ribbon cutting soon!

What do you enjoy most about being principal?

THE KIDS! And what is challenging about it? The biggest professional challenge has been the construction project. The whole process has been very interesting. I have learned SO much!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and whom would you go with? I haven’t been to Colorado or Wyoming. Europe is on my list, but not sure about the 8 hour plane ride. ...

I love traveling with my whole family because it is always an adventure!

What’s the first thing you do in the morning before school? Open my curtains and look out into the trees in my yard. I love to see the birds and butterflies fluttering about the branches while I enjoy a cup of coffee.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I love making things! Crafting is one of my favorite activities.

Where’s your favorite spot in the Keys? Anywhere near the water with family and friends.

Got a good story to share from this school year so far? I think the best story is the day we opened the playground. The K-5 students all came out to a mini ribbon cutting ceremony on the playground. We all circled around the perimeter, counted “1,2,3!” and the teachers cut little ribbons tied to the playground equipment. The loud, excited cheering was deafening. Their energy was contagious! This celebration reconfirmed our commitment to provide kids the time to play. Every day I look out onto the playground and smile because I know the kids are loving every minute out there! The time to play is as important as the time in the classroom.

When you have down time, what do you like to do? I love to invite friends and family over to our house and relax. A good book is on the top of my list, too. I love to shop! I jokingly tell my friends “I love the smell of retail.”

If you had the chance to take anyone to dinner, who would it be? So many people come to mind: authors, composers, inventors! My ancestors would be interesting, too.

I think it would have to be a dinner party with a really, really big table!

What are you most proud of? I am so blessed to have two families. I am very proud of my personal family and my work family. Both make me so proud of their integrity, hard work and accomplishments!

T

he Florida Keys Quilters are ramping up for another active winter season. But during the summer months, the group continued its community endeavors by assisting communities locally and across the country.

Marcia Swain, quilting member, convened the group together after their regular August meeting to make head scarves for patients receiving chemotherapy treatments at Mariners Hospital. Donations of colorful fabrics had already been made by guild members, and the cutting and sewing that ensued turned out some alternatives to baseball caps and traditional scarves for those who wanted them.

Across the country in California, the guild stepped in to help quilters who suffered displacement and loss during the 2018 wildfires. The group serendipitously was put in contact with a lady named Mary Ann, who belongs to the Ridge Quilters Guild in Paradise, California. She reported that her group had been meeting in the Senior Citizen

Center in Paradise, but like so many of their homes, the center was burned to the ground. For a while afterward, those who had not scattered held their guild meetings in a small room in the Chico California Women’s Club. Group members grew to between 65 and 75 members, and it was time to find a bigger place for their gathering.

The Veterans Group in Durham, California stepped up and offered their facilities for all of 2019, free of charge. With the place to meet and to sew resolved, the pressing issue became the replacement of all the specialized and somewhat expensive tools and fabric that it takes to make a quilt.

This is where the Florida Keys Quilters entered the picture. Donations from the guild members poured in for rulers, rotary cutters, thread, fabric and scissors.

Unfortunately, when the group last heard from Mary Ann, many of the Ridge Quilters were still living in rented homes, apartments or trailers.

The Florida Keys Quilters were busy the past few months, and will be into next year. March 20-21, 2020 is the quilt show, which is traditionally

held every other year at the San Pedro RC Church in Tavernier. The event includes the sale of homemade items, gifts and quilts made by members and sold in “The Country Store”. The event also features “The Key Lime Café,” which offers a place to sit and rest upon ordering a beverage, homemade

salads and desserts.

The highlight of the event is the one-of-a-kind handmade quilt, which will be raffled off at the end of the show. This year’s raffle quilt is a tropically themed design made up of numerous individual panels, each made by a guild member. The tickets for the raffle quilt are priced so that everyone has a chance to take it home. They are $1 apiece or $5 for six tickets. They will be available for purchase very soon.

The Florida Keys Quilters meet every first Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Key Largo Library Community Room. All who are interested in the needle arts are welcome to attend.

On Fridays in the same room there is an informal “Sit and Sew” beginning at 10 a.m. “Sit and Sews” are also held Wednesday mornings at the same time in the Islamorada Library Community Room. For more information, call and leave a message or text 516-425-9054.

very month, highly qualified local Coast Guard Auxiliary Air Operations Group members work with the Air Station Miami to provide valuable training for the men and women who perform search and rescue missions in the southeast Florida area.

On the morning of Nov. 26, the air groups met two helicopters a short distance from the headpin at Snake Creek for a training mission. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-8 is located in Islamorada and serves the Upper Keys from Key Largo to Long Key. Flotilla 13-4 is located at Ocean Reef. These two flotillas

provide support to the stations in Islamorada and Miami, as well as to our local community. Combined, the flotillas have over 100 members.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is made up of devoted and passionate men and women who bring safety to the recreational boating and paddle sport community through education and awareness, as well as outreach and prevention. The active flotilla provides training activities, vessel safety checks, kayak and paddleboard regattas and more. More information is at wow.uscgaux.info.

F

lorida Keys marketing officials have released a new driving tour app to help visitors safely navigate the Florida Keys Overseas Highway (U.S. 1) while experiencing more of the island chain’s offerings.

The Tourist Development Council’s free Florida Keys & Key West Travel app now has two driving tours that are triggered by geographic location and alert travelers to upcoming scenic, iconic or historical points of interest.

There are separate northbound and southbound routes.

The new resource, developed in conjunction with Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Keys chambers of commerce, also aims to relieve traffic congestion along the highway.

“We want our visitors to experience the highway that goes to the sea, but do it in a way that makes it safer for them and our residents,” said TDC director Stacey Mitchell. “By giving travelers advance notice and narration of upcoming places, they are more informed and can plan stops accordingly.”

Key West-based Two Oceans

Digital, the TDC’s internet marketing agency, spearheaded development of both the app and driving tours.

“Harnessing the technology and capability of the app, the ideal platform for this type of feature, a new way was created for the destination to connect with visitors to enhance their driving experiences,” said Lauren Oropeza, Two Oceans’ digital director of destination marketing.

Keys radio icon Bill Becker, news director at WWUS, voices the commentary that was penned by local writers to make visitors feel they are traveling with a knowledgeable local resident.

No, it doesn’t dip below the freezing mark. And no, we don’t get the cold white stuff that glistens in cities for that true holiday feel.

Despite it all, the Keys and its merrymakers know how to bring the holiday cheer to the community.

And no doubt, the Keys knows how to get lit with lighted bike and boat parades, as well as events featuring 30 tons of snow, an ice-skating rink and tree lightings.

Here’s a slate of events happening now through the end of season to check out this holiday season.

THE LIVING NATIVITY

Islamorada For the seventh year, Bluewater in the Keys, MM 86.4, bayside, hosts “Rock n’ Roll Christmas & Live Nativity,” on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. It’s a night of family fun, live animals, craft making, photos with Santa, cookie decorating, music and re-enactment of the birth of Christ.

Key Largo to Islamorada The annual U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots sanctioned event, “Run for Fun,” a motorcycle poker run, is set for Saturday, Dec. 14. The U.S. Marine Corps and sheriff’s-escorted parade leaves Gilbert’s Resort at 11 a.m. and will parade down U.S. 1 to Founders Park in Islamorada. A 5-ton USMC truck will be decorated with banners announcing and thanking supporters and acknowledging sponsors and displaying their logos. There will be additional antique military vehicles leading the parade.

At the park, live music will feature Allan Truesdell’s Usual Suspects with a special appearance by Jimmy Hawkins, and the Taylor King Band. There will also be entertainment and activities for families and children and food and beverage vendors. The winning hand will be determined at 3 p.m. The event culminates with Pops in the Park by the Keys Community Concert Band from 4 to 5 p.m.

HOLIDAY FEST

Islamorada With a mountain of snow, a holiday bazaar and a nighttime parade, the 15th annual Islamorada of Chamber of Commerce Holiday Festival is set to excite on Friday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 10 p.m. at Founders Park. Oh, and how can we forget the 35-foot high tree blowing magical snow through its branches.

Key Largo Bikes decorated in lights will parade on Dec. 13 as part of the annual Cindy Claus Lighted Bike Parade. Held at The Catch, the route is longer this year as bikes will ride north from down U.S. 1 to Snapper Avenue, make a right to Blue Runner Street, another right onto Transylvania and back south to The Catch. Nineteen years ago, local realtor Jane Wasmund contacted Cindy Smith, a postal worker, via the Key Largo Post Office and asked a question: "Who answers the Santa Mail?

The Postmaster gave permission and these two ladies sought out to answer local children's Santa letters. For 20 years now, they have been granting actual wishes and helping families in need in the Upper Keys. With their contacts at day cares, schools, churches and other organizations they have made holiday wishes come true for countless families.

PETS AND PINA COLADAS Key Largo Bring your pets to Keys Kritters Pet Store, MM 100.5, on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for a picture with Santa during the annual Pets and Pina Coladas event. A $5 donation gets you a Keys style picture with Saint Nick, a goodies bag for your pet and a refreshing pina colada for you. The event benefits Coral Shores High School Marine Lab.

CAROLERS COME TO TOWN

Key Largo Culminating with the lighting of the 35-foot tree, the 10th annual Light Up Key Largo is set for Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center. From 5 to 9 p.m., families and children will be immersed in the scenes of the holidays.

Kids can enjoy an ice skating rink, story time and crafts while parents shop at vendor tents. New this year is a wreath-decorating contest and trolley rides from Rowell’s Waterfront Park, where festival goers can park, to the Murray Nelson.

LIGHTED BOAT PARADE

Key Largo Boats will shine yet again under the nighttime sky for the 2019 Key Largo Boat Parade on Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. From sailboats to paddleboards, they will traverse the waters of Blackwater Sound to kickoff the holidays.

Boats will line up at Dusenbury Creek Green Marker 41 at 6:30 p.m., then head north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point at 7:30 p.m. The best public viewing locations for the parade are the Marriott Resort, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, The Caribbean Club and Sundowners Restaurant.

Islamorada Santa Claus and the carolers are coming to town again on Dec. 15 thanks to the Islamorada Firefighters Benevolent Association and Islamorada Fire Rescue.

The man with the big red bag and singers will begin the journey at 5:30 p.m. at the Islamorada Mobil in Lower Matecumbe, heading northward and making 20-plus stops to include Robbies, Moose Lodge, Southwinds Park, Venetian Shores , Founders Park, Plantation Yacht Harbor, Key Heights Drive, Indian Mound and Plantation Key Colony, to name a few.

‘KEY LARGO’S WINTER WONDERLAND’ Festive boats to parade from Blackwater Sound

K

ey Largo’s Blackwater Sound will be shimmering with color as the 2019 Key Largo Boat Parade sets sail at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21. Illuminated boats ranging from 55 feet, motors to sailboats to kayaks and paddleboards, will traverse the waters of Blackwater Sound to kick off the holidays with this annual tradition.

The Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club is picking up the reins for this community event. The Key Largo Boat Parade, now in its 34th year, will celebrate Key Largo’s legendary Christmas spirit with the theme of “Key Largo’s Winter Wonderland.” The parade will be led by the Grand Marshal boat, “The Coral Princess,” captained by the infamous Capt. Spencer Slate.

Boats will line up at Dusenbury Creek Green Marker 41 at 6:30 p.m., then head north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point at 7:30 p.m. The best public viewing locations for the parade are the Marriott Resort, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, The Caribbean Club and Sundowners Restaurant.

Entry to the parade is free. All entrants are eligible for the $500 cash drawing, which is drawn at random the night of the parade. Parade award categories are for Best in Parade, Best Use of Theme, Most Colorful, Most Original, Best Business, Best Boat under 25 feet and Best Boat over 25 feet. There will be over $2,000 in cash, prizes and trophies up for grabs!

JEFF LEONIA / LARGER THAN LIFE Upper Keys community remembers captain who lived big and loved hard TIFFANY DUONG

O

n Nov. 18, the Keys lost one of its own. Jeffrey Leonia, 24, was beloved by all who met him. He grew up on Marco Island and in Naples, spending weekends, summers and holidays at his parents’ house on Lower Matecumbe.

As an adult, he chose to make the Keys his home, moving to Islamorada to create a water-focused life he loved.

The Keys community is mourning the loss of this kind-hearted captain and is striving to do right by him through the legacy of love and adventure that he’s left in his wake.

“He really lived to the fullest, every single moment. He lived more in 24 years than many hope to in a lifetime,” said Tony Young, one of Leonia’s best friends. “Jeff was a true waterman in every sense, who wanted to enjoy each moment with those he loved, build his family with love and respect, and share his passions and everything he learned with others.”

The pair met five years ago working as spearfishing guides for Islamorada Dive Center. Instantly bonding over a love of the sport and sea, they started Forever Young Charter Company together. “It was just an idea based on best buddies who wanted to fish all day, and who thought people might want to go out with us,” said Young.

“It’s been him and I since day one. We wanted to grow that love of the ocean with folks and connect them to the Florida Keys, so when they went home, they’d make changes in their lives to make a difference in their communities.”

Drake Noble has been Leonia’s best friend and partner in crime since the pair was 15. They met on a beach when Leonia needed someone to drink the warm beer he’d stolen from his dad with him, recalls Noble. “We’ve been best buds ever since.” Noble said.

“Jeff loved the water, loved every part of it. And he loved the Keys. He just got a place in Islamorada. This is where he wanted to be.”

Stephanie Sirotzke remembers her boyfriend as someone larger than life. Through the example of his own courageous living and contagious energy, Leonia influenced Sirotzke and others around him to do their best and “live more.” Sirotzke said, “He was positive, upbeat, and kind. He was always ready to try something new, go somewhere, do something different.”

She adds, “And he was such a goofball.

He spread love to everyone he met and impacted every single life. He connected with people and made them want to ‘Live like Jeff.’”

Part of Leonia’s infectious charisma was his “pure heart” and generous spirit. Young remembers, “He’d give you the shirt off his back; and his sandals; and his board shorts – just to help other people.

He’s one in a trillion – one of those people you come across in your life and you just know they’re genuinely good.

“He’s the type of person you wish you could have in your life," Young said, "the friend everyone looks for, the son everyone wants their kid to grow up and become, the boyfriend every girl dreams of.

And we had him. I feel blessed for that.”

Sirotzke adds, “He was my everything. He was my best friend, and the love of my life. He was supposed to be my future. We built our life here in the Keys, and he completely changed me for the better.”

Noble said, “He was just living.

He loved life, so no matter what happened, he made the most of it.

He spread that joy to everyone.”

Young said Leonia’s legacy is in how he lived and loved. “He left us all to learn that life is precious, and if there’s something you enjoy doing, go chase it. Move as many people as possible and make this place better. Be the best you can be and love life every day.”

Sirotzke said, “Jeff will be with us all in every sunrise, sunset, fishing adventure, dive, boat ride, beach visit and every moment in between.

He would want us all to get out there and enjoy these moments, so we’ll continue to ride these waves for him.”

Leonia loved to stay up all night, watch the sunrise, and jump off the Alligator Lighthouse. Donations in his memory can be made to his favorite charity, Florida Keys Reef Lights Foundation (http://www. floridakeysreeflightsfoundation. wildapricot.org).

The Keys lost a model captain and friend when Jeff Leonia passed away on Nov. 18. A celebration of his life was held on Nov. 24 on Marco Island. As the sun set, 400 guests took seashells with Leonia’s initials and birth and passing dates on them and tossed them back into the ocean he loved so much. They served swordfish made to his favorite Tuscan recipe and celebrated his ability to bring people together; even with his passing. In this week’s paper, we remember a great man with a big heart. I

n the summer of 2019, three dozen students from the Florida Keys participated in the Experiment in International Living — international cross-cultural programs that spanned 16 different countries with 23 differently themed programs. The programs place students all over the world for about a month in the summertime and focus on topics such as environmental sustainability, language training, the arts, technology, human rights and other EIL representatives have said that Monroe County has the highest number of students participating of any county in the U.S., outside of the New York City metro area.

Some of the Keys students are Take Stock in Children scholars and other Keys students were selected to receive partial merit-based scholarships from the Monroe County Education Foundation through EIL’s essay contest.

This is the fourth year that area high school students are invited to enter the Experiment in International Living’s essay competition. Thirty winners will receive merit-based scholarships of 50% off to study abroad this summer on one of the EIL programs around the world.

The Experiment was started in the 1930s and became the basis by which the first Peace Corps volunteers were trained. Its mission is to create peace through understanding on a global basis, with a mission that includes the promise, “Experimenters go to learn, not to teach.”

The Experiment hosted a recent homecoming weekend, bringing the student travelers together as a sort of debriefing process. Most of the 2019 travelers gathered on Nov. 17 at the Doubletree Grand Key Resort in Key West to compare notes.

Melissa Martinez said she nearly fell over last year when her son, Kevin, now a sophomore at Key West High School, told her he’d like to spend four weeks of his summer in Mongolia.

“Then he said, ‘Mom, out of all the places in the world, when will I ever get another chance to go to Mongolia?’” Melissa said. “And I knew he was right.”

So he went, and spent four weeks living with a family in a traditional yurt, or tent-like structure, erected in a vast and unfamiliar place whose name has become synonymous with, well, vast and unfamiliar places.

Martinez was in Mongolia with a group of about 12 students, including another KWHS student, Maryama Akhmetkaliyeva, who had spoken English when she emigrated to Key West three years ago from Kazakhstan.

“I was so quiet, I never wanted to speak because of my accent,” she said. “But I did speak Russian, so when our group missed a flight this summer on our way to Mongolia, we ended up in Moscow for a night, and luckily I was able to help, especially since half our luggage had gotten lost.”

Her accent was barely noticeable as the honor student described her camel ride in the Gobi Desert and her host sister crying when she had to leave.

Luis Parrado from Marathon High School spent the summer in Argentina, where he spent time in Salta, on the Argentinian dunes, an ocean away from one of his Marathon

schoolmates, Christian Ruiz, who was in Spain for the language and culture program. Ruiz instantly learned that the Queen’s Spanish may as well be an entirely different language than the slang-filled Cuban Spanish that Ruiz speaks at home.

Coral Shores senior Caroline Althouse went to Thailand to study “Ancient Temples to Modern Bangkok,” while her classmate Antonio Molina immersed himself in Urban Culture and Technology in Spain, where he learned to appreciate the siesta and late-night schedule.

Other students throughout the Florida Keys related tales of their trips to Japan, South Africa, Morocco, England, Germany, France, Costa Rica and other nations.

“One of the things I learned is how accustomed we are to having everything available,” Akhmetkaliyeva said. “I’m definitely more grateful for everything I have.”

KEYS DIVERS RECOGNIZED AT CONVENTION

F

lorida Keys diving took center stage in Orlando last month as local shops and businesses made the trek for the annual Diving Equipment and Marketing Association’s international convention.

The largest event of its kind, the exposition held in late November brings together ocean interest and conservation organizations, as well as manufacturers and dealers of marine and diving equipment. This year, 10,000 participants attended the weeklong event.

Among the Keys diving contingent was Capt. Spencer Slate, who was selected to receive DEMA’s Reaching Out Award. The honor recognizes people involved with ocean interest activities and conservation who have contributed to diving and marine education over long careers. Slate has been teaching diving and guiding divers in the Florida Keys for over 40 years. His shop and dive boats are based in Tavernier, where he conducts regular “Creature Features.” The Reaching Out Award recognized Slate as a veteran dive instructor who has shared his vast knowledge of the ocean environment with thousands of divers.

Slate’s affinity for marine creatures includes his permitted feeding of ocean animals. Divers can see moray eels up close without fear. These encounters provide educational opportunities as Slate teaches guests about animal behavior in the wild.

Many divers never get to see and experience ocean creatures in the wild. Some visitors to the Keys live in areas where they have been trained in quarries and fresh water lakes.

Slate, his daughter, Sky, of Islander Snorkel & Tours, and veteran Keys treasure diver Carl Fismer were on hand to answer questions about Keys diving, meet old friends and make new ones as stopped by with interest in diving in the Keys.

Also on hand was History of Diving Museum executive director and Keys resident Lisa Jean Mongelia, who was presented with the Scuba Schools International Platinum Diver Award. Mongelia has been diving since 1978 and amassed more than 5,000 dives.

Scott Jones of Dive News Wire nominated Mongelia. Jones was at DEMA when a huge chocolate cake was ceremoniously cut at the History of Diving Museum-Dive News Wire booth. Key Dives owner Michael Goldberg was present to offer congratulations on behalf of dive operators in the keys.

Also present was Sally Bauer, member of the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame. As a recipient of diving and ocean activities’ highest award and election last year to the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences, she participated in the academy’s annual dinner and award ceremony. Bauer and her late husband, Joe, founded the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada — one of the world’s foremost maritime educational attractions.

Reefs off the Florida Keys are among the most beautiful and important in the world.

Major conservation efforts have protected and conserved these world heritage marine resources. Keys residents, divers, dive operators and marine educators were singled out for well-deserved high honors and accolades at DEMA. The convention in Orlando was a winning occasion for the Keys and its acknowledgment of the talented and dedicated divers.

CHECKING THE FORECAST FLORIDA KEYS HOSTS CLIMATE SUMMIT ERIN STOVER SICKMEN

t’s Tuesday afternoon and the Casa Marina Resort is buzzing with more than the usual tourist activity. A man wearing a tie-dyed shirt and sporting a long grey ponytail chats animatedly with a clean-cut architect in a sleek, tailored suit. And they’re obviously in total agreement about the topic swimming between them.

This is the 11th annual Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit, a gathering of representatives from all levels of state and county government, as well as private corporations, to address climate change mitigation strategies. The summit annually brings roughly 500 thinkers and leaders from business, government, higher education and nonprofits to the table for important conversations. The December event marks the first time since 2015 that the summit has been held in Monroe County.

When faced with distressing information, often the most solace can be found in facts. Knowing that experts — medical, legal and otherwise — are on the case is reassuring. The summit, hosted by Monroe County in collaboration with the City of Key West, the City of Marathon and the Village of Islamorada, provides volumes of valuable data. Leaders from fields ranging from public works to infrastructure development firms were on hand to put their heads together and share potential solutions for dealing with rising waters.

The 2019 theme, “Bridging the Gap,” refers to the work being done by Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact.

The compact is a formal collective formed

by Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties in January 2010 as a way to coordinate adaptation activities across county lines, and in conjunction with federal, state, regional, municipal, nonprofit, academic and private sector partners. In the

past 10 years, the four compact counties have worked diligently to address climate change, sea level rise, flooding and potential economic fallout. Essentially, the compact allows counties, which are witnessing the effects of climate change firsthand, to write the rulebook. The county officials, who are on the ground daily, are empowered to set standards for the adaptation plans that will directly affect their communities. The compact’s work is widely recognized as one of the nation’s best examples of climate action.

The gathering aims to build a bridge between concepts and execution, between ideas that have been proposed and the actual implementation that must now happen.

“Having the presence of the state’s resilience officer (Julia Nesheiwat) and the commissioner of agriculture (Nicole “Nikki” Fried) at the summit shows the state’s commitment to climate action,” said Rhonda Haag, Monroe County’s resilience officer. “This truly is ‘bridging the gap’ between state and local resilience collaboration efforts.”

The summit was successful in its endeavor to provide information and options leading to the next steps. Teams of scientists, including a group recently featured on “60 Minutes,” provided up-to-date details of what low-lying coastal areas can expect in the next 20 and next 100 years. Everyone in attendance knows something has to be done, but three big questions remain: What to do, how to do it and how much it will cost?

Corporations, like Jacobs, a resilience planning tech firm with 50,000 employees worldwide, 400 offices and an annual revenue stream of $12 billion, stepped up to provide some possible solutions at every threat level and price point. The firm explained how it quantifies the information provided by scientists, then develops cost/ benefit analyses for companies, a realistic and necessary step for government and corporate decision-making.

While it’s reassuring to know that the juggernauts of the technical industry are tackling issues pertaining to highways and major construction, it’s also encouraging to see the grassroots efforts available for individuals and smaller businesses. Representatives from local government provided insights into what has worked at the ground level, while regional universities like Florida International University shared their efforts for developing solutions that directly pertain to South Florida.

The summit took place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Key West, with Mayor Teri Johnston welcoming the attendees and thanking them for working on solutions. She ticked off some of the Keys’ vulnerabilities, with a drinking water supply that has to cross more than 40 bridges to get to Key West, and 60 miles of roads within the city that need to be elevated.

“Are we glad you’re here? You betcha,” she said to open the summit.

n October, to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Keys Jewish Community Center (KJCC) decided to mix tradition up with a local mangrove cleanup.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and the first of the Jewish High Holy Days. It’s a period of deep introspection and repentance often accompanied by a Tashlich service, or ritual “casting off” of sins. During this tradition, Jews throw pieces of bread and other foods into a body of flowing water to symbolically shed their sins from the previous year.

This year, to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, KJCC joined forces with the Hillels of the Florida Suncoast and Scubi Jew for a “Reverse Tashlich.” Rather than casting their sins into water, participants remove “human sins” from the water by cleaning up local waterfronts.

Reverse Tashlich was invented by students at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg four years ago. One of those students, Josh Keller, is now an intern at Rainbow Reef.

“There’s a normal Jewish tradition of ‘Tikkun Olam,’ or repairing the world through mitzvahs,” Keller said “A mitzvah is a good deed, and involves honor and privilege. Today, we’re doing ‘Tikkun HaYam,’ or repairing the sea, by cleaning up our sins and trash from the water.”

Susan Gordon, who headed up the KJCC cleanup efforts, said, “Today is a ‘double mitzvah,’ because we’re helping a member and cleaning the seas.”

KJCC selected Donna and Bill Bolton’s waterfront as their cleanup location because both Boltons were recovering from health issues that made it impossible for them to clean up their mangroves personally. Since the Reverse Tashlich is designed to bring the community together for Tikkun Olam or Tikkun HaYam, KJCC leadership saw no better way than to help a member and the environment at the same time, Gordon said.

Donna Bolton sat amazed as the community rallied to help her.

“This is where the ocean came in from the hurricane,” she said.

"That’s why there’s so much trash. Now look … it’s clean. This is absolutely wonderful.”

Grateful, Bolton said, “I haven’t been able to do anything, so I had no idea there was this much trash here or that so many people would show up to help.

Boy Scout Troop 912 of Tavernier joined the cleanup effort. “We’re just helping the environment and doing community service,” said Adrian Peterson, 14. Scout Tommy Cheung, 13, said it wasn’t for a badge. “We just want to help,” he said.

KJCC member Gloria Avner said, “These kids are having the best time doing a great thing. Today is all about taking inventory of who you are and making a commitment to improve.”

Looking at the collected trash, she concluded, “What a great day for everyone.”

Holiday market brings 40-plus vendors

ore than 40 booths scattered the grounds of the Francis Tracy Garden Center in Tavernier on Nov. 30 for the Holiday Craft Market & Festival. In honor of Small Business Saturday, local artists and small business owners celebrated their talents, donning paintings, plants, jewelry, candles, essential oils, statues, decorations and other arts and crafts. Patrons enjoyed a food truck and spectacular bake sale as they browsed the different forms of craftmanship. The festival was sponsored by the Garden Club of the Upper Keys – a nonprofit education organization founded in 1952 that’s dedicated to teaching people about the natural environment and native plants, enjoying the beauty of the botanical world, and preserving the natural beauty of the Upper Keys.

While not the first festival the group has held, it was the first to have a significant focus on arts and crafts, from handmade gifts and heirloom decorations, to plants and botanical decor.

y name is Daniella DeLucia, and I’ve lived in Islamorada since I was a tot. My parents and I used to go to Lorelei every Sunday for jerk chicken.

In fact, my dad and I fell through their old, wooden dock and into the water years ago before they remodeled; and still, we remain loyal patrons. And I lost count years ago of how many servers at various restaurants suggested the fish tacos.

But lately, I’ve been craving something different. I needed more variety in my diet — something I couldn’t find on an Islamorada menu, so I decided to start cooking.

But there was one (slightly embarrassing) problem: I’m 25 and just now learning to cook. But I know I’m not alone. As a single girl working full-time, I don’t have the time or energy to find a recipe, shop for ingredients, and then actually prepare a homecooked meal. Frozen dinners became my go-to. I was open to meal kit delivery services, but they don’t deliver to the Keys.

When I discovered that Publix and Winn Dixie deliver groceries to my door, my cooking took off.

It’s changed my life — I shop less, cook more, see more friends, and even have lost weight. I’m happier and healthier.

Publix delivers through a phone app called Instacart. When I search online for recipes on any major recipe website such as Food Network, All Recipes, etc., I use the “Get Ingredients” button to add all items from my chosen recipe to my Instacart. I remove items l already have in my kitchen (i.e., salt) and make customizations. The technology is smart and remembers brands I prefer. Then, I choose when to have my groceries delivered, and I don’t even need to be home when they arrive (unless I order alcohol). This simple grocery service has taken the stress out of meal prep for me, which has actually allowed me to cook a decent dinner.

There are other perks. Last summer, my boyfriend Edward Mallon and I ordered Instacart while we prepped the Contender cabin for our trip from Islamorada to the Bahamas. Within two hours, we stood in the trailered boat as an Instacart delivery man lifted and handed us multiple cases of water, beer and snacks for our voyage. Amazed, Edward exclaimed, “He definitely earned his tip that day!”

The most common question I get asked is, “Do the shoppers choose good quality produce?”

Yes — avoiding faulty fruit isn’t rocket science. Also, Instacart

keeps shoppers accountable by prompting users to rate them.

You can also leave special instructions. For example, I wrote “Super squishy please!” as a special instruction for my avocado. Voila!

A couple hours later, I had a perfectly ripe avocado for my instant guacamole.

The service has helped my friends and family who live far away from a grocery store. Debra Jiovenetta, resident of Lower Matecumbe, used to drive 40 minutes to the Key Largo Publix before they built the new store in Islamorada. She exclaimed, “I wish I knew about this app sooner! I will definitely utilize the app on holiday weekends when the traffic is backed up.”

Shipt is the Winn-Dixie equivalent of Instacart. I signed up for a free trial with Shipt to compare the grocery delivery services.

The cost and the interface were nearly identical. One night I entered my entire shopping list into both apps. Each item was never the same price, but the total for both orders was almost exactly the same. So, if you are deciding which service to use, I recommend deciding based on whose products you prefer.

The drawback to using a grocery delivery service is that prices on the apps are slightly higher than in-store. For example, a Publix coconut oil via Instacart is $4.55 versus $4.05 in store. I rationalize that time is money; five minutes of shopping time is at least worth the 50-cent markup.

With all the time I save using a grocery delivery service, I cook gourmet dinners five nights a week now; frozen dinners are in the past; and I feel a sense of pride when I make a great tasting meal for my family and friends.

It’s well past time that this Italian Conch learned her way around the kitchen.
