VAPING 101 SCHOOLS TACKLE STUDENT VAPING

T

hey look like pens. Or jump drives. Or phone chargers.

But then a student puts the device to their mouth. It’s a vape pen, commonly known as an electronic, or e-cigarette. They’re either rechargeable or disposable and they contain either nicotine or THC, the chemical found in marijuana, or, as the kids say, “the one that’ll stone ya.”

School districts across the country, including Monroe County, are dealing with the quickly rising popularity of vaporizers or “vape pens” containing liquefied nicotine or THC, which is super-heated when someone inhales through the device. The liquid becomes vapor, rather than smoke, that’s drawn into the lungs.

Nicotine vaporizers were originally marketed to adults who wanted to stop inhaling the tar that burns in cigarettes and eliminate the smell of cigarette smoke from their person. But the creation of flavored liquid has made them more attractive to high school students.

Most vapor is nearly odorless, which poses a greater challenge to school officials, who can’t immediately ascertain whether a student is inhaling nicotine or marijuana vapor.

School district officials on Nov. 5 said they were unable to provide Keys Weekly with the number of vaping incidents that occurred in Keys schools. But a statewide database that tracks discipline incidents for every school in the state shows 38 tobacco incidents district-wide for 2018.

According to the School Environmental Safety Incident Reporting (SESIR) System Monroe County School District reported 38 incidents of tobacco use in 2018, but some schools have reported more incidents than others. For example, Coral Shores High School reported 23 tobacco violations to the state last year while Key West High School, where vaping is said to have “peaked” last year, reported only six tobacco incidents in 2018.

Regardless of the spe-

cific numbers, concern over vaping is growing among teachers, parents, coaches, counselors, nurses and plenty of students.

“Knock on wood, we saw a big spike last year, but it seems to have lessened a bit this year,” said Key West High School principal Amber Acevedo, who added that all incidents of vaping are referred to the school resource officer for testing to determine whether the vape pen contains marijuana or a tobacco product.

“If a student has THC on campus, then that makes the vape pen drug paraphernalia and state statute, not school district policy, governs drug paraphernalia on school campuses. So our officer does the testing right away to figure out what we’re dealing with.”

But in all cases, Acevedo said, school officials are working to ensure there’s a significant education and prevention element to help reduce vaping incidents on campus.

Monroe County hasn’t done anything as extreme as the school in Alabama that removed the doors from bathroom stalls, or the one in Colorado that forfeited a volleyball match due to “widespread vaping” by the team, according to a Sept. 20 New York Times article by Julie Bosman entitled “At school, everyone vapes, and adults are in crisis mode” about the prevalence of vaping among high school students.

In Monroe County, students found with THC vape pens were previously subjected to an automatic 10-day suspension.

“But all that meant is that the students

spent 10 days home on the couch or out on the streets, oftentimes vaping the entire time,” Acevedo said. “So we’ve reduced that district-wide, although possession of THC on campus by a repeat offender or by someone who’s selling it, could still result in a 10-day suspension. For other students, we’re really trying to insert an education and prevention element into the counseling each student receives when caught with either kind of vaping device.”

Marathon High School took the prevention efforts a significant step further in recent weeks by temporarily installing two “medical inflatables” on campus for Red Ribbon Week, which aims to combat drug use and abuse.

“We brought the giant brain and giant inflatable lung to campus with funding provided by the Monroe County Coalition,” said Christina Bellotti of Marathon High School.

“The nurse and the EMT who came from Texas to conduct the program focused on the effects of vaping and did a great presentation for all sixth through ninth graders.”

Sergeant Erik Mixon from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office also educated students about the dangers of vaping, which has caused lung inflammations that have sickened dozens of people who use vaping devices. At least eight people nationwide have died from those illnesses.

“Health officials suspect that vaping-related illnesses and deaths are underreported, and that doctors have only recently begun to connect vaping to mysterious lung ailments,” states the Sept. 20 New York Times article. “And educators said they were beginning to grapple with the reality that a new generation of American teenagers, one that would be loath to pick up cigarettes, is now addicted to nicotine through vaping.”

Monroe County schools, like thousands of others, are working to combat the new nicotine addiction, but only time will tell.

BPW throws a tastin’ & sippin’ party

M

ark the calendar for Sunday, Nov. 10 because it’s time for the 22nd annual Taste of the Islands, presented by the Marathon chapter of Business and Professional Women. It will be held at the Marathon Community Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

So, yes, it’s back, and bigger than ever, this year.

About a dozen local restaurants will be selling samples of their wares. There will also be a kids’ section with face painting, bounce house and animal touch tanks.

“The kids will be entertained while mom and dad sip and graze,” said BPW Vice President Christy Johnson.

She said there are two new tricks up the club’s sleeve — a farmers market, and an all-female lineup of musicians.

“I think the farmers market is going to be a big hit this year,” Johnson said.

“Paradise Produce, the local fruit and vegetable stand, and Olive Morada will bring a sample of its products — olive oil, vinegar, and more — from its shop in the Upper Keys. Islamorada Coffee Roasters will also have a booth. Plus, there will be things like local honey for sale, too.”

Tony Napoli has been tasked with bringing three great “girl” bands to the stage at Marathon Community Park: Rita Beauchamp, Lady A, and a reunion show for Karen Weber and the Funkin’ Conchs.

There will be about two dozen vendor booths set up with arts for sale. (Think early Christmas shopping!)

Admission to the event is $5 per person and prices vary for different tastes, so, bring some cash. Drink tickets sell for $2 each and “cost” between 2 to 3 tickets each — domestic beer, craft beer, wines, High Noon Sips and frozen drinks. Guests can also buy soda, sports drinks and water. Participating restaurants include Overseas Pub and Grill, Driftwood Pizza, Gourmet Tomato (a food truck), Mangrove Mike’s, MHS Bistro, Marathon Yacht Club, Food for Thought, Havana Jacks and Brutus. Admission is free for veterans and children under 12.

The event will culminate with the crowning of the Big Kahuna. There are three teams in the running — the Weekly’s Jason Koler and local attorney Patrick Stevens; the crew from Overseas Lounge; and Patrick Thomas. The groups have been holding fundraisers, as the person who collects the most funds on behalf of BPW is crowned the winner.

The local chapter of BPW supports local women, whether high-school aged or adults.

“In 2019, we gave out $20,000 in scholarships from the Stacie Kidwell Memorial Scholarship Fund,” said Johnson. “We rely on the Taste of the Islands and Keysino Night in January as our biggest fundraisers of the year.”

WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE The under-told stories of the 3 courageous women

Read about dynamic strong women who changed the world while we celebrate Taste of the Islands this weekend. The event (see page 12) is hosted by the Business & Professional Women of Marathon and the proceeds are donated to local educational scholarships.

In 2011 Manal al-Sharif was imprisoned for driving in Saudi Arabia. She was forced to sleep on a filthy mattress in a cockroach-infested jail crowded with women. If her travel, intelligence and determination had already set her up as an accidental activist, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Meeting these imprisoned women strengthened Manal’s resolve that things in Saudi Arabia must change.

This beautifully written memoir describes her childhood and unwavering faith in her religion and family. Manal felt this one nonviolent act expressed years of struggle and hypocrisy; women can go to school but they cannot get there. Manal, a highly educated computer scientist, strove to make headway as the unexpected leader of the Saudi women’s right to drive. Manal says: “the rain starts with one drop.”

Most people have not heard of Mileva Maric. She was a Serbian physicist and the first wife of Albert Einstein, in Zurich, Switzerland at the turn of the century. Mileva struggles to enter the Polytechnic as one of the only woman allowed to study at this level. Possessing a natural proficiency in math and science, Mileva constantly restrains herself, as it is unacceptable for a woman to outshine the male students. Classmate Albert Einstein is immediately intrigued and befriends Mileva, whom he affectionately calls Mitza. Together they form an ideal team to discuss and examine the most challenging theories. Mileva is essential to Einstein’s work. Constantly battling on many fronts from professors and family, she unexpectedly becomes pregnant, surrenders her career and sadly, her name is all but forgotten.

Margaret Sanger survived a difficult childhood. Born in 1879, she was one of 11 children. Her miserable mother and alcoholic father had little to give and nothing to share. The older girls escaped quickly and for years Margaret tended the younger ones. With a sharp eye and quick wit, Margaret found herself desiring more than the average woman of her time.

With a love of learning and thirst for independence, Margaret truly believed change was possible. As the rebels and socialists fought for equality and the vote, Margaret’s nursing position provided health care to the poorest tenements along New York’s lower east side.

These women begged Margaret for change. There were no alternatives at the time and no restraints for abusive husbands. Margaret spent her entire adult life fighting to establish birth control and Planned Parenthood.

TOP DOC Former Navy doctor trades scrubs for scuba

S

he’s a tiny package of power.

Diane Lundy probably breaks 5 feet by a smidge, but this tanned and tidy woman has a wealth of experiences. For 26 years, she was a doctor in the U.S. Navy. Now, she basks in the anonymity at the Looe Key Dive Center. But, she agreed to this interview hoping to persuade more women to consider a career in the armed services.

And, what was the best part of her career?

“I got to treat the ‘Greatest Generation,’” she said of World War II veterans. “It was a privilege to serve them.”

Lundy was born in Michigan and raised “all over the place” as she and her mom hopped from port to port with her father, an enlisted Navy man. Lundy said her father distinguished himself in the military and it was a natural choice to follow in his footsteps.

Her practice spanned from family medicine to flight surgery to ophthalmology. That middle part was a thrilling time. At one point she was deployed as the only woman in a group of 500 marines of a helicopter squadron. It was her job to keep them “up,” or flying.

“Pilots have to get a physical every year to be qualified to fly.

And if they got sick, it was my job to decide if they were still safe to fly. There was a constant tension between keeping them ‘up’ — because all they want to do is fly — and doing the right thing for them medically.”

As part of her military medical training, she was required to do things private practice doctors would never consider part of the job. She said she learned how to jump out of perfectly good airplanes, and how to rappel down a cliff face, and how to keep her composure dangling from a SPIE rig underneath a helicopter.

“We had to do some flight training. There’s this one move called an autorotation on a helicopter, which is how you land without engine power. You come down and slide across the ground. That was pretty thrilling,” she said with nonchalance.

Lundy joined in 1980. The Navy agreed to put her through medical school in return for seven years of service. She ended up adding some more years to her contract by seeking out even more specialized training as an ophthalmologist. The majority of her career was spent on base in San Diego, California and she said she was fortunate enough to spend her married life on bases

near her husband, Will, a Marine Corps pilot. (“He wasn’t in my squadron or we would have not dated!”) She retired as a captain, or in Navy parlance, an “06.”

And while the helo squad was thrilling, Lundy also found deep satisfaction as an eye doctor. She treated military men and women and their family members with cataracts, crossed eyes, cases of glaucoma.

“I treated everyone from babies to people in their ’90s,” she said. “There was this one gentleman, probably 85, who was deaf and going blind. I couldn’t fix his ears, but I told him I could fix his eyes. He was terrified, but he trusted his Navy doctor.”

Now she and Will lease and operate Looe Key Resort and Dive Center. They’ve been there since 2006, and took over the operation about five years ago.

Lundy said she spends most of her time fixing scuba equipment and sometimes co-teaching a scuba class or conducting a refresher.

Frankly, she’s so cool she’s probably teaching dolphins how to do underwater blowhole surgery but is just too modest to tell us about it.

“I wanted to be a United States Marine. Period.”

Ken Bell, born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, said he was following family tradition — his father and grandfather both served in the Army.

He served from 1966 to 1972 and was present during the Tet Offensive.

“That’s when everything, literally, blew up,” Bell said. “Our base was attacked and lots of bad things happened.”

He said a sure highlight of his service was visits by Bob Hope.

After getting out of the service, Bell traveled frequently in his role as a commercial casualty agent. He is a past commander of the Disabled American Veterans chapter in Marathon, and past commander and financial officer of the American Legion in Marathon. He also is the commandant of the local chapter of the Marine Corps League and vice president of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

VICKIE NELSON

Vickie Nelson enlisted in the Air Force in 1978. She was a medical technician at the hospital at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. “I did one year of college, but I wanted something different — I wanted to get an education and travel and the service seemed like the way to go.” Although she only served a few years, she married an enlisted man and got her wish, traveling to Greece. “I was born and raised in Fort Bragg. My father was a Green Beret who did three tours in Vietnam, and my brother retired from the Air Force.” Nelson works at the Marathon City Marina and said customer service suits her better than military service.

JENNA RODDY

Jenna Roddy spent a decade as an MP in the Army, or Military Police. Now a physical education teacher at Stanley Switlik Elementary, she said she tells the children that Army life is like school life — everyone needs to work as a team. She enlisted right out of high school, at 17 years old, following in the footsteps of her two older brothers. “I was very patriotic at the time, but I also liked the idea of a free education.” Roddy spent the majority of her military career serving with the Georgia National Guard, and her unit performed detainee operations.

One Blood will hold a blood drive on Friday, Nov. 8 at Dolphin Research Center (DRC), MM 59, Grassy Key. The bloodmobile will be stationed in DRC's parking lot from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Anyone who donates blood during the day will receive free admission to Dolphin Research Center and a free OneBlood fleece blanket. Veterans Affairs hosts town hall meetings The Monroe County Veterans Affairs Department staff will be present to provide additional services and guidance at two upcoming town hall meetings being held by the Department of Veterans Affairs/Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

The first meeting will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo and the second will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15 at Harvey Government Center in Key West. The town halls are for Monroe County veteran clients, military service members and the public.

There will be an update about VA services and statistics, and an opportunity for public comment.

He can tell you what he did in the Army between 1975 and 1978, but then he’d have to kill you.

Just kidding. But local Realtor Jim Willey will admit he was in military intelligence. “I had enrolled in college … but it just wasn’t for me.

So I went into the recruiter’s office and took the assessment test.

When I was done, they moved me to another room and told me to wait. Apparently I had scored in the top 1% and was on my way to the National Security Agency.”

Willey said the armed forces were still engaged in the Cold War at the time. “Let me put it this way, the linguist in our shop spoke Chinese.” Willey withdrew from the service and went on to have a productive career at IBM, and then Proctor & Gamble.

Pastor Tony Mandile of Marathon’s Martin Luther Chapel spent seven years in the Air Force.

“Definitely, the most romantic part was as crew chief of the Boeing EC 135, the flying command post in the event of a nuclear war.”

Mandile said he was essentially a mechanic, making constant safety inspections. At the time he served, he said, there were four similar aircraft — one on alert, the second as a backup, and two more in maintenance rotation. It carried 110,000 gallons of jet fuel and could stay aloft for 24 hours or longer, or refuel fighter jets with a boom. “There were eight officers aboard whose job was to code and decode top secret messages between the Air Force and the Navy.” He came from a family of servicemen and said he had a sincere desire to serve his country.

GROUPS, NON-PROFITS OFFER CAMARADERIE, OPPORTUNITIES • Disabled veterans get a $5,000 discount off their assessed home value. And 100% permanent disabled and service-connected veterans do not pay property taxes as long as their homes are homesteaded properties. For vets 65+ years old with a combat-related disability, the percentage of service-connectedness of the wound is the percentage off available for property taxes.

The county can write letters of support to the property appraiser’s office on behalf of veterans to secure tax exemptions and discounts.

Donnelly, a purple heart recipient himself, is referring to the many different services available to help bring vets together — whether local or visiting — and to make their lives easier. The Weekly highlights some of these alternative services available throughout the Keys, ranging from fishing trips to free gym memberships to cash rebates on homes.

MONROE MARAUDERS (MILITARY HISTORY APPRECIATION) The Monroe Marauders honors veterans by restoring, preserving and maintaining historic military vehicles. The vehicles are used for parades, funerals, celebrations and many other significant events throughout the county. The group acts as ambassadors about the vehicles’ history and important military events. Vets are welcome to come help restore, drive and otherwise participate.

COUNTY AND STATE PARKS (FREE & DISCOUNTED ADMISSION) Florida State Parks will give a 25% discount on annual passes to all state parks for honorably discharged vets. Veterans with service-connected disabilities and their spouses or surviving spouses get a free lifetime pass. County and municipal parks offer free or reduced entrance fees to current military members, honorably discharged or disabled veterans and their spouses.

This will allow vets to collect more easily on discounts available at local stores and restaurants.

T

he Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway was an ambitious project and considered, by some, to be the single greatest undertaking by any individual.

That individual, of course, was Henry Flagler.

While the dream was big, and was accomplished, the reality of the endeavor was never the success story Flagler imagined. It was a relatively short-lived dream considering both the cost and effort.

While the first train made the trip all the way to Key West in 1912, the beginning of the end of the railroad came in 1929, when the New Orleans-based Seatrain began operating. Unable to compete with the lower freight prices Seatrain could charge, shipping traffic dwindled for the Florida East Coast line.

Competition for business only intensified with the Great Depression.

The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, which destroyed 40 miles of railroad track, hammered home the proverbial nail in the Key West Extension’s coffin. Subsequently, the entirety of the railroad’s right-of-way, including Pigeon Key, was sold to the state for $640,000 on Nov. 9, 1936.

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

Here’s what the community has to say:

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting will take place Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Islander Resort, 82100 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada.

Members will discuss NOAA’s proposed changes to the sanctuary’s boundaries, marine zones, regulations and management plan.

As expected, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Restoration Blueprint is encountering enormous pushback from all sectors and user groups throughout the Florida Keys. This latest iteration does not take into account decision making of the working groups developed early in the process to address the proposed rules and regulations of the original plan. That plan was derailed in 2015-16 by the reassignment of the top three management officials as a result of an Inspector General’s investigation and subsequent Sanctuary internal investigation, the details of which have never been released.

Closing areas and limiting access fails to address the three major issues facing the health and well-being of the Sanctuary. Water quality, law enforcement and education need to be adequately assessed, and there is nothing in the 585-page Draft Environmental Impact Statement presented by the Sanctuary to confront these matters.

Restricting access and closing additional areas will have severe, negative socio-economic impacts on traditional activities in the Keys such as commercial fishing, recreational and charter fishing, dive operations and basic enjoyment of our unique water-based environment through limits on general aquatic activities.

Fisheries management is the responsibility of the Gulf and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Protecting these resources is best accomplished through size and bag limits and spawning closures – not by closing public access. All of the key indicator species in our waters have been recently assessed by formal state/federal audits and all are found to be in good to excellent condition.

Public comment from all user groups have consistently stated that the Sanctuary is in far worse condition than it was when the Sanctuary took control. In fact, declaring the area a National Marine Sanctuary has encouraged significant increases in tourism, resulting in ever-greater impacts due to uneducated pubic activity. Sanctuary Preservation Areas designated to protect fragile coral formations are inundated by users who pay no user fees, are not required to have Sanctuary rules or regulations on board their vessels and lack basic knowledge of the marine environment. A study done by Camp 2010 documented 18 interactions per diver per dive in SPAs despite pre-dive briefings. Krieger/Chadwick 2013 documented a direct correlation to coral damage with the increased placement of mooring buoys at SPAs. Yet, the Restoration Blueprint calls for additional mooring buoys at these same areas.

In 2014, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council under Spiny Lobster Amendment 11 approved 60 new coral protection sites developed by our Association, working with state/federal fisheries managers and environmental groups. These are all high-profile coral sites and coral farming locations. The restriction only applied to commercial trap fishing for lobster. At those developmental meetings, Sanctuary officials stated they would move forward and apply these same rules to recreational users. However, that never happened and 5 years later not one of those sites is included in the Sanctuary plan for additional action.

During the past 4-1/2 years, there has not been one meeting with user groups or any of the working groups to reassess the proposed Restoration Blueprint. This is a serious oversight and as written, the Sanctuary Restoration Blueprint fails to address the concerns of residents and businesses that comprise the backbone of our economy. We highly recommend the Sanctuary withdraw this plan and reconvene meetings to address these critical issues.

rimal Grove is hosting a Community Day on Saturday, Nov. 9 to celebrate its recovery from Hurricane Irma and reopening to the community. The urban farm, which specializes in rare trees and tropical fruits, is also celebrating its first steps to becoming a “Grove of the Future.”

“Irma was devastating. We lost about 85% of our trees,” said owner Patrick Garvey. “Then, there was three feet of saltwater over the whole grove. Trees really don’t like saltwater.”

Garvey’s associated nonprofit, the “Growing Hope Initiative,” helped to subsidize some repairs.

Always working with dedicated volunteers and members of the community, Garvey began to assess the damage and replant.

As he did so, he noticed that 2 of his 3 breadfruit trees had survived the storm and saltwater sprays. Similar species like jackfruit and pedalai all died. Not long after the storm, Garvey planted a few more breadfruit trees, all of which are still alive. Garvey suspects that some species of breadfruit are more tolerant to salt, and now has 25 plants in total. “It’s a bit of an experiment. A lot of trees I planted didn’t take well at that time, but breadfruit did.” He now boasts the

first breadfruit grove in the continental U.S. The University of Oregon has taken note. It has invited Grove to earn a master’s in environmental studies beginning in fall 2020. “I’m going to study climate change and the ability to grow breadfruit commercially, to feed people. It grows in our zone but not Homestead or Miami, so we’re going to research what plant varieties are best, what management practices work, and how all that will change with the climate,” said Grove.

During this next phase, Grimal Grove will remain a community resource for food education and a green space for activities and events. But, with Garvey expanding his studies and research on breadfruit, he will also add an education center. “I want to make Grimal Grove the ‘Grove of the Future,’” said Garvey. “It beats living in the past.” The farm will also serve as a research hub for Garvey and others from the University of Oregon studying food resiliency.

Community Day will be a “preopening” for the grove. Garvey’s goal is to re-open fully in January 2020 on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday’s event, also from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include tours, cooking demonstrations, and workshops to help people connect to nature. It took one Weekly staffer exactly a day to wolf down the second season of Jack Ryan on Amazon streaming. The locale has switched from the Middle East in season 1 to Venezuela in season 2, with the same fastpaced and smart action. It stars John Krasinski (Jim from “The Office,” but with better biceps) and Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”) and their incredible chemistry continues to bubble. Although season 2 follows in the fictional footsteps, it’s certainly got the whiff of real-time drama in South America.

OPEN A CAN OF LAUGHS WITH ‘TUNA’ MCT’s latest production opens next week

T

here are four plays in the ‘Tuna” series. The one opening next week — “Greater Tuna” — at Marathon Community Theatre is actually the prequel to the one performed in the 2014-2015 season, “Tuna Christmas.”

It’s going to be easy to follow along, though. John Schaefer and Michael Chaplin are reprising their roles.

Oh, and Marilyn Tempest will direct the duo again. But is it REALLY a duo? Together the men play more than 20 characters throughout the night. The dressers behind the curtain play an important role — ripping the costumes off and stuffing the actors into new ones before they dash back onto stage.

Chaplin — no, he’s not descended of the Marathon branch — hails from Texas, among other places. The “Tuna” series is incredibly popular in the Lone Star state. So popular, in fact, that the play was performed at the White House when George H. W. Bush was president.

Chaplin said of the decision to bring the series to Marathon, “That will teach me to open my mouth at a party!”

Apparently, he started quoting the play verbatim while seated next to Tempest. The rest is history in the making. The show opens on Thursday, Nov. 14 and runs weekends (Thursday to Saturday) through Dec. 7. The curtain is at 8 p.m. except on the day of the only matinee on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m.

The plot is based — ahem, loosely — around two radio commentators and the parade of citizens who drop by the studio: football coach, humane society rep, essay winner, etc.

“There are a couple of recurring jokes that the audience just loves,” said Tempest, “like the guy that claims to have seen a UFO. But the message from Petey Fisk, the guy from the humane society, is actually heartfelt. He cares a lot about the animals.”

Schaefer will slip in and out of the roles with ease.

“I have no idea how many times I’ve appeared on the MCT stage.

I guess … often? More than 20 times?” he said, then looking over to Chaplin and dead-panning, “but this time I don’t get to grab your butt!”
