CORAL RESTORATION SITE HIT BY BOAT ANCHOR

A

key Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) restoration site, known as Pickles Reef, was recently damaged by an anchor drag and drop, leaving well-established elkhorn corals fractured at their bases and scattered over the reef.

According to CRF, it is evident from the damage assessment and a missing mooring buoy that a boat dropped its anchor and proceeded to drag the anchor over this critical site.

Jessica Levy, Coral Restoration Foundation restoration program manager, said the CRF dive team went to the reef to monitor some new elkhorn outplants when they discovered the damage to the well-established colonies. Coral restoration work at Pickles Reef was conducted within and under permit from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Anchoring on coral is illegal in the sanctuary.

“The corals that have been destroyed were returned to the wild in 2014,” she said. “It is devastating to think that these corals survived Hurricane Irma only to be wiped out by someone carelessly dropping an anchor on the reef.”

Anchor damage to coral colonies is not uncommon. Centuries of reef

growth are annihilated every single day by this type of disregard. If left unattended, damaged coral will move with ocean surge and quickly die due to abrasion and burial from sediment.

Even with this setback, Coral Restoration Foundation hopes to recover this site. CRF urges community members and visitors to be more cautious out on the water. A quick act of carelessness can decimate decades of coral reef growth. But a moment of consideration will ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful marine ecosystem.

Please use good practices when anchoring a boat including the following: · Research where boats can anchor or attach to a mooring buoy safely before a boat trip. · Attaching the boat to a mooring buoy. · If there is no access to a mooring buoy, look for a sandy area that is away from a coral reef or seagrass bed. · Ensure your anchor is set and will not drag.

unning over the iconic Jewfish Creek Bridge, the First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run will bring the community and visitors together for a race unlike any other. And this year’s race, presented by Keys Weekly, is going to support various organizations and causes in the Florida Keys.

Set for Nov. 9, hundreds of runners will walk and run over the bridge — the gateway to the Florida Keys — overlooking the Key Largo Bay. Now in its 10th year, the run will feature a half-marathon and 4-mile run/walk that ends at Rowell’s Waterfront Park, MM 104, bayside.

The race assists Teen Intervention and Prevention Services of the Florida Keys’ mission to inspire youth towards a path of nonviolence through education and athletics.

The nonprofit provides prevention classes and workshops to middle and high school teens in the community.

The Mark Sorenson Youth Sailing Program is also receiving support from the bridge run. Founded in 2006, the sailing program is giving Florida Keys children of all backgrounds the opportunity to discover the sport of sailing. Putting more than 300 kids on sailboats a year, the program is dedicated to increasing participation in the sport while developing the next generation of sailors.

The race also is supporting the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, Interact Club, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Key Largo Fire and EMS, and Islamorada Fire Rescue, Key Largo School and Key Largo Rotary are benefitting partners.

“This beautiful race is a true community event as runners will come to the finish line at Rowell’s Park where they’ll be met by family and friends. But this event, now in its 10th year, also gives back to the community and its youth,” said Henry Menendez, event organizer and president of HNO Productions. “ Events kick off Friday, Nov. 8, with packet pickup from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at First State Bank, MM 97, Key Largo. hile the lovely Barbara Cockerham is Islamorada’s current Key Lime Pie Lady, she was not the first.

The original was Fern Butters, whom writer Nancy Powell wrote about in a Nov. 1, 1969 edition of The Key West Citizen: “For 40 years writers from all over the country have been glorifying the name of Islamorada’s Fern Butters mainly because she more or less ‘invented’ the Key lime pie.”

Fern Butters did not invent the tart Florida Keys delicacy, though she does have a hand in the beloved pie’s history. Though not the first Key lime pie served in the Florida Keys, it was perhaps the most celebrated.

Butters served her first Key lime pie in 1926, after discovering a grove of lime trees in the property bordering the Butterses’ first motel, the Key Inn, built along a burgeoning Overseas Highway.

Their second Keys hotel was the Hotel Matecumbe, destroyed in the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, and rebuilt a decade later as The Fern Inn. The building would be, for a time, home to MA’s Fish Camp, where Cockerham baked her Key lime pie in the same kitchen that Fern Butters once baked her world-famous dessert.

Today, that building is occupied by Reefers gastropub.

The U.S. Marine Corps’ 244th birthday celebration will be held Nov. 10 at the Upper Keys VFW Post 10211 & Auxiliary meeting room inside Arthur’s Island Kitchen, MM 102, Oceanside.

Festivities will be at 7 p.m. Come early and enjoy happy hour reduced bar prices along with special discounted sandwich platters.

The event is open to all branches of service and open to the public. A portion of all proceeds supports veterans and programing.

Veterans Affairs Department to hold Key Largo town hall The Monroe County Veterans Affairs Department staff will be present to provide additional services and guidance at an upcoming town hall meeting being held by the Department of Veterans Affairs/Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

The meeting will be at 1 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 14 at Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo.

The town hall is for Monroe County veteran clients, military service members, and the public. There will be an update about VA services and statistics, and an opportunity for public comment. The meetings will identify eligibility for community care, who the providers are in Monroe County and the efforts to increase providers in the county, and new legislation impacts for veterans.

“Monroe County veterans, dependents, surviving spouses, VA and non-VA client medical providers have an opportunity to speak directly with the top leadership from the Miami VA Hospital,” said Cathy Crane, director of Monroe County Veterans Affairs.

“Every year, the Miami VA and Monroe County co-host this town hall meeting to provide an opportunity for Florida Keys veterans to have questions answered.”

League of Women Voters plan membership meeting The Upper Keys League of Women Voters will have its general membership meeting and a presentation on the “Balance of Power” on Nov. 4 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Key Largo Library Community Room. The public is invited.

Art Guild of Purple Isles to meet at Tavernier Elks Lodge The Art Guild of the Purple Isles will meet Nov. 6 for the first monthly meeting of the season at Tavernier Elks

This class is a new addition to her schedule, which includes the popular Kids Art Class for ages 5 to 11 at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays. The teen students will learn all media, from acrylics to oil pastels and more, and finish each class with a completed artwork. Materials fee is $15. The class is for ages 12-16 and limited to 20 enrollees. Registration is required.

Autumn crafting at Islamorada library Participants can make autumnthemed crafts for Thanksgiving decor at Islamorada Library at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16. Library staff members Ms. Charlotte and Ms. Annie will lead the group in this activity, which will include making little fairy-like dolls and other crafts. The class is free and intended for ages 7 to adult, with a limit of 12 attendees.

FKAA NAMES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

T

om Walker will succeed Kirk Zuelch as the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s executive director.

Walker brings extensive experience to the authority, having served for 11 years as the deputy executive director and chief operating officer for the organization.

Walker also has 35 years’ experience in municipal utility services and has led public and private enterprises in water treatment, advanced wastewater treatment and streamlining operations.

“It was a difficult decision, with three highly qualified candidates,” said authority chairman J. Robert Dean. “In the end, Tom’s extensive and diverse experience gave him the edge.”

Walker is expected to assume the new duties Nov. 22.

As executive director, Walker will manage the operations of the water and wastewater utility — the sole potable water supplier for the entire Florida Keys, serving over 77,000 residents and 2 million visitors per year. The authority also provides wastewater services in portions of the Lower and Middle Keys, critical infrastructure in the effort to protect nearshore waters and the imperiled coral reef.

Zuelch is retiring after 15 years with the authority, eight of those as executive director. He will remain active in the community and looks forward to spending more time with his family.

FULL-TIME SCHOOL ENROLLMENT INCREASES, BRINGS FUNDS AND STABILITY

T

he number of full-time enrolled students in Monroe County schools has increased by over 500 students in the last nine years, according to David Murphy, executive director of assessment and accountability.

September enrollment numbers hide the dip in attendance that occurred following Irma, when many families lost their homes and left Monroe County, some for good.

Murphy noted that by the time September counts were occurring for the 2018-2019 school year, one year after the storm, enough families had returned that there was not a significant dip in enrollment.

Mark Porter, superintendent of Monroe County School District, credited recovery from Hurricane Irma as part of the equation, but also overall economic growth and recovery from the 2007-08 recession. That growth,

he said, required workers and brought an uptick of residents and families with enrolled children to the county.

The growth is most likely due to several of the factors combined, but one thing is certain: the increases help the county.

The superintendent said the swell of students provides critical financial and organizational stability to the county. The increase in enrollment over the past nine years has brought additional funding of $735,218 to the school district, bringing the general fund budget for fiscal year 2019-20 to $111,693,292.

The additional funds were used for enhancements and additions to the Career and Technical Education program (e.g. a fire academy at Marathon High School) and additional resources allocated toward Englishlearner students across the district.

ayor Sylvia Murphy, the District 5 County Commissioner, announced on Oct. 28 that she won’t be running again for her county seat. “I can confirm officially now that in November 2020, I will be done,� said a relieved Murphy.

Murphy was considering running again, but cited age as a big factor in her decision. “Every time I made an appointment or said I would do something for or with someone, I worried that when the time came, either I wouldn’t be able to do it or wouldn’t feel good,� she told the Weekly. “And so, I thought best just to get out of it. I’ll be 84 years old, and I think it’s time I do some things for myself.�

Murphy is in the third year of her fourth four-year term as a Monroe County commissioner. She previously worked for Monroe County’s Health Department, School Board, and Fire Rescue Team.

Murphy calls her next adventure “something new and different.� The freshwater Conch has been in the Keys since moving here at the age of 18 and is looking forward to going beyond the islands with her new free time. She says, “For one thing, I think I shall travel.� She pauses and adds, “And work in my yard. Whatever I please, really. I’ve worked my whole life, so it’ll be nice not to have a schedule and an alarm clock.�

While she has no set plans, she trusts that she will remain engaged with the community and find some new adventures. “All is well. Now that I’ve made up my mind, I’m really looking forward to it.�

The Nov. 20 BOCC meeting will be Murphy’s last as mayor. During that meeting, the commission will nominate a new mayor. The meeting will also be Commissioner Danny Kolhage’s last meeting as a county commissioner. Kolhage resigned his District 1 seat effective Nov. 30.

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary will hold a public meeting at the Marathon Middle High School auditorium at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, to take oral public comment on the Restoration Blueprint.

The draft proposals recommend a range of potential changes to existing boundaries, regulations, marine zones and the non-regulatory management plan. The Restoration Blueprint is available at floridakeys. noaa.gov/blueprint. Oral public comment is limited to three minutes, with speaker signup available beginning at 5:30 p.m. Groups are encouraged to designate a speaker. Oral statements can be supplemented by detailed written comments submitted at the meeting or online at regulations.gov.

“To be a good fisherman, you must be a good observer.” Those words changed my life, as slight variations in tides, barometers, wind direction and moon phases can mean the difference between success and failure.

I have always been a conservationist. I chose to be a harvester as a career, learning lessons from local mentors: Never overfish a spot, let small fish grow, take responsibility for what supports you and watch every sunset as if it were your last.

I own my own boat and have 11 federal permits to fish. For this privilege, my boat is tracked by government satellite, a vessel monitoring system and a $4,000 GPS that fishery managers in Tallahassee monitor. I must log in to leave the dock. It is Big Brother.

In 1990, Monroe County voters opposed the creation of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The public was told how the sanctuary would improve everything: fishing, corals, channel markers and water quality. The federal government would save us from ourselves, but they were really here to help themselves.

Many prominent fishermen tried to work with the sanctuary for a balanced approach and were rejected. Healthy corals, abundant fish and migratory patterns did not fit the agenda. Officials did listen to the select few who supported their artificial crisis. Areas were closed with no results, despite promises of an abundance of fish overflowing from the closed areas. But only lionfish prospered. The feds said they needed more areas to close, and that “user groups would adjust.” Personally, I have been “adjusted” too many times.

Soon, the sanctuary showed its distrust of locals and spent $1 million on two militarygrade Puma AE surveillance drones to monitor the public boaters. But the feds didn’t check the state laws, and thanks to the Florida Senate’s Unauthorized Surveillance Act, that use was stopped. Again, Big Brother.

Other issues such as lobster mini-season were contradicted by (first sanctuary superintendent) Billy Causey’s support of it, even though his own biologists said, “More environmental damage occurs in that week than the entire rest of the year.”

I observed that meetings and locations were inconvenient for the public to attend. I protested a vote due to lack of public attendance and was told by the chairman, “Absence is consent.” I said that those absent were at work, and I observed that the sanctuary didn’t want the public to attend or comment. It was management’s policy to limit participation through scheduling.

I’ve observed too many backroom deals, such as the proposal in this new management plan to limit reef access in some areas to Blue Star-certified dive and snorkel operators.

There is no “misinterpretation” as Ms. Fangman has stated. It is meant exactly as written and despite public outcry over the proposal, the sanctuary refuses to amend or rewrite it, so it could become law as written.

The plan creates a registry of charter vessels. The term “carrying capacity” is most important, as it would allow the sanctuary to determine how many people and which vessels visit that location. Who will get more consideration, a 150-passenger catamaran company that donates large sums of money to the sanctuary or a small six-pack charter boat?

How will that be controlled? Big brother knows: Vessel monitoring systems at $4,000 each.

A 150-passenger catamaran company can afford that, but a small operator can’t.

Our biggest problem is water quality from upstream. All the closures in the world will not cure that problem. In the past two weeks, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed five bills to restore Everglades flow and stop sources of pollution affecting the Keys. He also has veto power over the sanctuary. aves of underwater and outdoor enthusiasts, eco-travelers and families came out last year to celebrate the marine environment during Mote Marine Laboratory’s inaugural Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration at Founders Park. With funds raised for reef restoration and research, the event is back for another year of education, entertainment and excitement.

Set for Saturday, Nov. 9 at Founders Park, the second annual event is bringing a day of interactive exhibits, crafts, games, music, food and shopping. Mote’s Ocean Fest is part of an annual outreach to raise awareness of the marine laboratory’s coral reef research and restoration, as well as the dozen-plus research programs and work of partner organizations.

Group brings Korean pop music and dance lessons to the Keys TIFFANY DUONG

orean pop music, or KPop, started in South Korea in the 1990s as a mashup of Western hip hop/ dance music and traditional Korean music. Since then, it’s evolved in both style, popular players and fan base. Recently, a group of passionate, dedicated KPop music fans hosted a “Fan Meet” at Islamorada Library.

As it came to exist in the digital age, KPop also is so much more than a musical genre. “What makes KPop so appealing to everyone isn’t just the handsome men and gorgeous women; it’s the choreography, the videos. It’s a whole production. It’s like a musical,” explains Nathalie Lominchar, lead of the popular South Florida KPop Fans group. “It’s so colorful and so different than what we see here.”

For Lominchar and her fellow KPop Fans, following along with the latest groups and trends in KPop becomes a favorite hobby and almost a lifestyle. “I’ve been doing this for 10 years,” she said.

little obsessed.” Her fellow presenters agree, bringing out fan memorabilia collected over years and showing off dance moves from videos now decades old.

The point of KPop Fan Meets like the one in Islamorada is to bring fans of the music genre together. The events range from huge “K-Con” KPop Conventions to dance rehearsals to learn the latest moves to a KPop 101 lesson like the recent Keys program.

“If you’ve never done a KCon, it’s so worth it,” Lominchar said. “You can high touch, scream ‘I love you!’ as the idols walk past. And, you’ll see a bunch of people just like you. That’s the best part.”

In addition to the fan group, Lominchar heads up a YouTube channel called “K!Junkies” with Amanda Vilar.

fan meet six years ago and have since created their very popular channel dedicated to KPop and its fans. They have over 43,000 subscribers, and release dance covers, album reviews, fan meet vlogs and anything else KPop-related they can find to bring people together.

Lominchar opens the Fan Meet by asking Christina Neel of Islamorada in the audience, “Are you a KPop fan?” Without skipping a beat, a cheery Neel replies, “Of course! Who isn’t?” Lominchar explains for others less familiar with the genre how KPop has evolved through the generations.

The original boy bands of the 1990s might now be called “man bands,” jokes Neel. “Or even ‘dad bands!’

“They’re in their 40s now and still great!” says Andres Cabrada, the other lead of the fan group.

Cabrada goes on to explain how the same group can shift its style over time. “Most groups will come out looking innocent. And then a ‘bad boy’ song will release and they’ll shift their styling to be more edgy and sexy,” she says.

KPop often follows the tenor of Korean and Western society of the time, shifting group sizes, looks and dynamics to account for things like mandatory military service for Korean men and sexy “girl crush” looks for empowered women. Lominchar applauds the fluidity of stereotypes and looks within the genre, something she loves.

In recent years, KPop has boomed in popularity, with big name groups performing as close to the Keys as Miami. Lominchar brings up a video of BTS, a contemporary “it” group. “They’re the first group to make it into the west in a big way,” she says. From the audience, Samara Quintana squeals in agreement. “I love KPop. I have since 2015!” Wearing a BTS necklace, the Key Largo native eagerly joins the dance workshop hosted by the fan group after, of course, requesting a BTS song.

“I know there are kids down here who aren’t into being on the water,” she says. “These programs are to help them!”

HOSPITAL HOSTS ‘A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NURSE’

aul Hann, Jaimie Eaves and Beth Dunlap, registered nurses from Mariners Hospital, spent Oct. 23 with 15 students from Coral Shores High School. During “A Day in the Life of a Nurse” event, the students toured several departments in the hospital, including the hyperbaric chamber.

Scott Fowler, manager of the hyperbaric chamber, explained to the students that the chamber can treat up to 13 approved conditions, including wound healing, treatment of infections and carbon monoxide poisoning.

“I learned so much about the services offered at this facility. There are far more than I expected,” said Alexander Stenberg, a junior at Coral Shores.

“The best part about this day is that I am able to introduce all the different aspects of nursing and healthcare to the students,” said Hann.

“Most of my family is in health care, so I have had a lot of inspiration for what I wanted to do in my career,” said Deanna Messa-Green, a senior at Coral Shores. “However, I never thought I would be interested in trauma; I was really interested in what the flight nurse does,” Baptist Health South Florida has taken part in “A Day in the Life of a Nurse” for several years.

ach year, Burton Memorial United Methodist Church opens its doors to the community for various missions and outreach events. The church is in need of some help with its free dinner and food pantry ministry. The church serves over 50 free dinners every Thursday night from 5 to 6:30 p.m. year-round.

Historically, the church serves over 2,600 dinners per year.

Serving 200 families per month, the Burton Food Pantry is open to the public 10 hours each week. Supported by Publix, Winn Dixie, Ocean Reef Community Foundation, Monroe County, United Way and other organizations, the church still needs help each week to keep these vital services running for those who are food insecure.

To keep the 20-plus year tradition going, the church is seeking the following: • Church groups, families, service organizations, youth groups, restaurants and clubs, to volunteer at the food pantry or dinners.

• Reusable paper bags. The church would like to discontinue the use of plastic grocery bags. If your business sells reusable bags, the church would appreciate donated bags for the food pantry. The church also seeks eco-friendly dinner serving products such as plates and cups.

• The top five items for filling food pantry distribution bags, which are canned chicken or ham, jelly, cereal, vegetables, white rice and pasta. The pantry’s needs vary month to month, so other unopened items are welcome.

• Financial donations to cover the cost of dinner items such as fresh vegetables, salad makings and bread.

H

olidays in the Keys tend to be a mix of traditional and tropical, with Santas in Hawaiian shirts, boat parades for the Fourth of July and SCUBA diving for Easter eggs on the Vandenberg Wreck. Halloween is no different.

Hanna Koch, a visiting scientist at Mote’s International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration (IC2R3) facility, and Cody Engelsma, a coral reproduction technician, showcased their three favorite “spooky” corals, while explaining a little bit of the science behind their quirky Halloween spirit: ZOMBIE CORALS Zombies, a Halloween favorite, are the undead. They can walk and sometimes even talk, but they are not normal. And, you certainly couldn’t date one. Zombie corals, it turns out, are a real thing and quite similar to their unhuman counterparts.

If you remember Keys Weekly’s article from Oct. 24 on coral reproduction, Koch and her team

reminded us that coral sexual reproduction is critical for the survival of the reef. Coral sexual maturity in many species is size-, not age-, dependent. Therefore, a large healthy-looking coral that should be sexually reproducing but isn’t is called a “zombie.”

Researchers around the world have noticed these freaky reproductive fakes and are working to explain why. “Chemical toxicity — some researchers believe it’s a result of developmental or reproductive toxicity attributed to chemical pollutants, like what you might find in sunscreen,” said Koch. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors, meaning they throw hormones and sometimes reproductive development or cycles out of sync. Koch adds, “It has been shown that reefs that are heavily visited by tourists also have a higher level of chemical pollutants, so there might be a connection between human activity, local chemical pollution in the water, and failed coral reproductive activity.”

Koch and her team have similarly observed some 3-year-old restored staghorn corals that aren’t sexually mature, despite being well beyond the size for sexual maturity. “These corals sit in a SPA, so it’s open to divers, snorkelers and tourists,” says Koch. “It all goes back to how we humans impact our environment in so many ways we don’t even see.”

CORAL FLUORESCENCE What’s Halloween without some glow-in-the-dark fun? Many corals, it turns out, glow all the time, we just can’t see it with our naked eyes.

Back at Mote, Engelsma adds a blue light adaptor onto his stereoscope and shows us a whole new glowing world of corals under the magnifying glass.

It’s called “coral fluorescence,” and it happens when corals absorb light in one wavelength but emit it at another. The process leads to color change at the longer emitted wavelength, which looks like a “glow.”

The blue filter just allows us to see this “glow.” Koch adds, “The first time we saw it, we were geeking out!”

Natural coral fluorescence is still being studied, but there are several ideas for the functions it might serve.

In deep water corals, it likely plays some role in photosynthesis and energy production. Corals have symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae within their tissues that uses sunlight to photosynthesize and produce energy for the coral. Within the corals, blue light converts to orange, which is more efficiently utilized by the zooxanthellae for energy production.

Engelsma shows a close-up of an Orbicella faveolata coral, more commonly known as mountainous star coral. He points out bright, glowing tips and a circular center. “Look at the tentacles and the polyp’s mouth,” he says. “The concentration of fluorescence there indicates it might be used to attract and capture prey.”

Koch describes one further function the cool glow might serve: as a natural sunscreen. “There have been observations that compromised or injured corals fluoresce more,” she says.

“They might express these molecules to protect against toxic oxygen radicals that can lead to tissue damage from harmful UV rays.” It may be that the cool glow serves multiple functions that scientists are just beginning to uncover.

CHIMERAS Finally, Halloween would be incomplete without monsters. There are plenty of horror films out there where mad scientists fuse together body parts or combine people to create bionic villains, Frankenstein monsters, human caterpillars and everything in-between.

While corals don’t take it to that extreme, the Mote scientists have observed chimeras within their coral tanks. Chimeras are genetically distinct individuals who fuse together and become one. “You can think of them as siblings, same parents but different individuals,” explains Koch. “They’re from the same fertilization batch but were individual larvae before fusing to become a single colony.”

Koch and Engelsma observed several coral “siblings” attaching together and living as one organism. “Perhaps they decided to fuse for stresstolerance,” explains Koch. The fused corals live as one unit, leveraging the strengths of both individuals, accounting for the weaknesses and sharing resources. While some scientists may think chimeras don’t have a significant purpose, Koch and Engelsma hope to conduct further experiments on their mashed-up monsters to explore how far the shared adaptations will go. “Who knows, maybe this will show us how corals can further adapt to a changing future environment,” says Koch.

A

unique festival of dance presented by Xenia Leonteva and Xelestial Bellydance will hit the Murray Nelson Government Center this weekend.

The Festival of Oriental Dance Delights, Friday, Nov. 1, to Sunday, Nov. 3, will involve dance workshops taught by guest master instructor Ahmed Hussien, culminating in a Saturday night performance by stellar oriental dance artists of South Florida and their students at 6:30 p.m.

Originally from Kyrgyzstan, Leonteva moved to the Florida Keys in 2006.

Dance was always part of her life, but her interest in oriental dance, or belly dancing, was piqued the few years she was living in Germany working toward her master’s degree.

“Dance has been my passion since childhood; any kind of dance seemed fascinating to me,” she said. “I have found that dance is like a universal language, and I am lucky to be able to communicate in it.”

Leonteva became a student of oriental dance in 2004. In 2015, she decided it was time to share her skills with other eager students. That’s when she founded Xelestial Bellydance, an Islamorada-based oriental dance group dedicated to cross-cultural exchange and community engagement through performing arts.

“I have been very fortunate to form strong bonds with my group members over the years,” she said.

“We’ve shared many wonderful memories through dance and various projects that we’ve worked on together.

In addition to her dedication to the art of oriental dancing, Leonteva works as the Veterans Service Office administrative assistant and said she is passionate about serving the community.

“It is sometimes challenging to juggle my daytime job and evening part-time occupation such as dancing, but I’ve enjoyed it over the years and find myself lucky to have many passions in life,” Leonteva said.

Her heart for service sparked the idea for the Festival of Oriental Dance, which is her third production of its kind at the Murray Nelson Center. Part of the proceeds from the festival will go to Islamorada Community Entertainment (ICE), a not-for-profit dedicated to enhancing local arts and supporting young artists.

Leonteva said this year, despite the success of her productions in the past, she’s stepped the production up a notch by inviting guest instructor Ahmed Hussien to conduct workshops.

Originally from Egypt, Hussien has vast experience in classical oriental, Egyptian folklore, ballroom, ballet and Broadway. Leonteva says his work and dedication to oriental dance continues to be a source of inspiration for fellow artists. His classes, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, will focus on authentic oriental dance and Egyptian folklore.

The performance itself will be held Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. and will be a demonstration of Egyptian folklore, modern Shaabi, classical Egyptian oriental and American Tribal Style.

KIDS LEAD THE WAY Locals join global cleanup day

I

n September, people around the world took to the shorelines for International Coastal Cleanup Day. Boy Scout Troop 912 from Tavernier and families from Ocean Studies Charter School (OSCS) joined the global movement by cleaning up Harry Harris Park and Beach. They picked up over 316 pounds of trash in the joint effort, the majority being plastic, fishing rope and wood.

"It feels good to know I’m helping the animals and the people so that the next generation gets to see the same things I do," said Micah Carr, 12, a Boy Scout from Troop 912. As he hauled tangled fishing rope out of the mangroves, Carr exclaimed, “It’s really heavy! I can’t believe how much there is.” He continued, explaining why it matters for his generation to take part in events like the cleanup that help the planet and its animals. “Like rhinos: people won’t get to see them because of poachers. I think that’s awful. I want our oceans to be clean for the future.”

Similarly, Nathan Rodgers, 6, from OSCS, had the animals in mind when he was picking up plastic bottles with his dad, Charlie. “I want to clean the beach because the birds and fish will eat it,” said an eager Nathan. “We’re not done yet, Nathan. We got a long way to go,” chimed in his dad.

Although they’re still kids, Carr and Rodgers both recognized the need to take part in the global fight against ocean and shoreline pollution. This is partly because they are surrounded by adults (parents, teachers and scout leaders) who recognize the importance of connecting the Keys to what’s going on environmentally in the world. More importantly, these adults empower their kids to realize they can be part of the solution to these large global problems.

Sarah Naylor, who took her kids Levi, 9, and Lola, 6, to the cleanup collaboration, loved that the event complemented what her kids learn in school at OSCS. She said, “I took the kids out here to help clean up our local area and to connect the global problem to our local one.”

Another OSCS parent, Geoff Rudolph, agreed. “We’re here because it’s an international beach cleanup day,” said Rudolph.

Looking at his kids Ellie and Alex, both 9, Rudolph emphasized, "This is what they're learning in school, and it's important to put it into practice."

Ariel Poholek, one of the scoutmasters for Troop 912, agreed. It’s part of the reason he helped plan the event. “Our kids need to do this, too, so they learn how to take a stand for what they love,” said Poholek, who hopes to organize future cleanups and environmental events for kids around the community to get more involved.

Watching the trash pile up as scouts, students and parents brought it in for final tallies, Poholek noticed a flash of white in the corner of his eye. “Ibis! Oh wow, you don’t usually see a flock of ibis so big,” he comments. “It’s like they know what we’re out here doing today, and they’re saying ‘Thank you.’”

CLEANUP CELEBRATION Last canal cleared of Irma debris

M

onroe County, Village of Islamorada, and Department of Environmental Protection officials, along with Adventure Environmental Inc. and the monitoring company Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions, celebrated the clearing of the last canal in the Hurricane Irma marine debris removal project in Marathon on Oct. 24. The environmental restoration effort was funded through a U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) grant.

“For the residents that live here, this is another symbol that we are coming back from the hurricane,” said Michelle Coldiron, Monroe County commissioner. “So many residents use canals as their highway. This is how they make their livelihoods and for them to have their canals cleared of debris, business will be back to usual.”

The project started in August 2018. As of Oct. 24, 409 days of the 505-day revised project, the removal work status is as follows: The county applied for the canals to be cleared, and NRCS selected the approved canals. The original project scope started with 103 of the most impacted canals

A

t 77 years old, Ted Massinello is trekking up and down the Keys with steel straws and a “save the environment one sip at a time” slogan.

Massinello, better known as ‘The Steel Strawman,” says he doesn’t need to be out and about pitching steel straws to businesses and restaurants currently using plastic. A Plantation resident of 50 years, he’s a former physical education teacher and high school baseball and football coach. He entered the business world in the 1970s having run a Hawaiian coffee citrus operation, and now, he’s found a niche market selling stainless steel straws and other steel personalized-engraved products.

“Some people say it’s just a straw. Well, how about 8 billon a day in the world and 250 million a day in the U.S.,” he said. “What I’m trying to do is be the best purveyor of stainless steel to eliminate plastic as much as I can.”

Researching plastics, and specifically straws, Massinello found that Clearwater, Deerfield, Delray and Miami Beach have implemented bans.

In Key West, single-use plastics were recently outlawed.

Massinello says he’s proud to be doing his part in saving the environment and its pollution crisis by offering businesses and events like weddings a better alternative with a little bit of customization.

“I did a wedding down here where they gave out straws as gifts,” he said.

“The reception I’ve received since starting this has been extremely positive.

Down here, young people care about this. I’ve found a market that’s interested in reducing plastic.”

mall craft advisories flew and Florida Bay was frosted with whitecaps as a record 143 anglers gathered in the Florida Keys for the 2019 Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Fishing Championship on Sept. 20-22.

This two-day, catch-and-release event summons anglers, guides, fishing celebrities and members of the community of all skill levels to fish for seven species confined to the intriguing beauty of Everglades National Park, while remembering Herman Lucerne, affectionately known as “Mr. Everglades,” who loved and fished the park like none other.

“The tournament has come a long way since Dr. Lloyd Wruble started it two decades ago,” said Flip Pallot, angling legend and longtime tournament attendee. “Herman truly loved Everglades National Park and spent most of his life unlocking the impenetrable wilderness of the Everglades, blazing the trail that is the foundation of backcountry fishing today.

Capt. Jared Raskob, of Islamorada, won the 2019 Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Fishing Championship with a total of 186.750 points, catching all seven required saltwater species - bonefish, redfish, snook, snapper, tarpon, sea trout, and black drum or bass.

No stranger to Florida Keys backcountry fishing, Raskob also reeled in the

largest sea trout of the tournament, measuring 21.0 inches.

For the second straight year, the top 3 finishing anglers caught all seven species of fish, with second-place angler Rob Preihs, of Islamorada, scoring 166.750 points and third-place angler Mitchell Gaither scoring 139.500 points.

As the largest backcountry fishing contest in the Florida Keys, the unique competition attracted 143 anglers and 79 teams. Headquartered at the Islander Resort for the sixth straight year, the contest produced a grand champion, six top anglers, team champions and six division champions. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the water initiative groups whose efforts are restoring the flow of clean freshwater to Everglades National Park and Florida Bay, a designated World Heritage Site.

With a full day of music, food, drinks and fun, the benefit concert will raise money for those in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian.

Known for his chart-topping duet with Kenny Chesney, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” and his ’90s No.1, “Dust On The Bottle,” Murphy said he’s excited to be coming to the Keys to play and hang out with the people in Islamorada, all while supporting Hope Town. Murphy said he’s been to

Abaco and the Bahamas on many occasions, and he knows just how great the people are.

“The whole point of why I wanted to come down was to do something for the people who had to weather so much impact,” Murphy told the Weekly. “I’m just happy there’s a little something I could do to help out in the cause. Coming to Islamorada and meeting and hanging out with the people, I’m really looking forward to that.”

Organizers of the event, Sam and Timmy Arce, have been instrumental in raising funds and collecting goods for the Bahamas since Hurricane Dorian, and past natural disasters as well. As a songwriter, Murphy has garnered more than a dozen awards over the years with artists such as Reba McEntire, Dobie Gray, Jason Aldean and Blake Shelton recording his songs. And with the 2018 album “No Zip Code,” Murphy is launching himself on yet another journey to an already successful career. Last November, Murphy and Chesney won Musical Event of the Year for their hit during the 52nd Country Music Awards.

“It was a surprise for us,” Murphy said. “We weren’t expecting that.”

Murphy joined Chesney on his 19 major stadium concerts in 2018 and toured on his “Songs for Saints” 2019 tour that took them from the Midwest to the south and northeast. Today, the two are working on a new project.

“Playing music, and getting to do what I get to do, it’s really a blessing,” Murphy said. “Kenny and I had a bunch of great experiences.”

Murphy’s songs continue to be a staple on the country radio with the likes of “Big Green Tractor” and “The Only Way I Know” by Jason Aldean, “Anywhere With You,” by Jake Owen, “The More I Drink,” by Blake Shelton and Justin Moore’s new single, “Why We Drink.”

Those in attendance for Murphy’s acoustic performance this weekend in Islamorada will hear hit songs of his own, plus ones he’s written for Chesney, Aldean, Owen and others.

As for what’s next in Murphy’s journey, he said he’s living by the motto of “just try to live and enjoy every day.” Come this weekend, he’ll be doing just that.

“It’s going to be a great weekend and a good time being down there, and enjoying the day and getting together to play some music,” he said.

“I’m a big fan of the Keys and the lifestyle and the people. I’ve got friends in Marathon and Key West, and I come down at least once a year to fish. I really enjoy the beautiful scenery.”

Fourteen months after Irma, Postcard Inn Resort & Marina is back to 100 percent with the grand opening of Raw Bar coinciding with the Help for Hope Town benefit concert. And along with the concert, Postcard Inn’s Art Walk down Bimini Row goes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

he Hurricanes came ready to play in a post-season consolation match against Somerset Academy Canyons’ Cougars on Oct. 25. The Canes battled tough following a 70-yard touchdown by Somerset running back Zach Herrington, but lost, 20-16. For the Canes, junior running back Lucas Dennis scored on a 17-yard touchdown run toward the end of the first quarter.

A safety following a bad snap by Somerset gave momentum to the Canes toward the end of the third quarter. That was followed up with a 70-yard kickoff return by Cooper.
