Corley Smith, a freshman who has made a profound impact on the Coral Shores swim team, is this week’s Upper Keys Weekly Female Athlete of the Week. Smith specializes in the 200M and 500M freestyle events. She also is a strong contributor on the team’s 200M and 400M relay teams. Smith’s 2:04 in the 200M free and her 5:29 in the 500M free are easily the top times in the county for both female and male swimmers. In recent county competition, Smith bested the top female by 29 seconds in the 200M freestyle. Even more remarkable, her 500M time was 1 minute and 24 seconds faster than the second-place female finisher.

Smith has been swimming since she was 7 years old. “I can’t say enough about Corley,” said coach Jon Olsen.

“She comes in at 6 a.m. three days a week to practice before school, and then swims five afternoons a week as well. She will be a force in our district and beyond for the next four years.”

Under Olsen’s tutelage, Smith has been swimming in Junior Olympic events around the state since 2015.

“She has already made a name for herself through Junior Olympics” Olsen said. “She’s an outstanding swimmer and an even better young lady.”

Associate head swim coach Kelly Kater offered similar raves about Smith’s swimming preparation and performances and also pointed out her model work with The Upper Keys Foundation’s community service. “Our 42 swimmers provided some muchneeded assistance with the Lighthouse Swim event in September,” Kater said.

“Corley was typical Corley; the first to show up and the last to leave. She was ever present and ever ready to provide assistance wherever it was needed.

She’s a very special young lady.”

Lucas Dennis, a junior standout on both the Coral Shores football and weightlifting teams, is this week’s Upper Keys Weekly Male Athlete of the Week. Dennis was singled out for “getting the team off on the right foot” as he turned the first two Coral Shores possessions into touchdowns in the Canes’ 54-6 win over Palm Glades on Oct. 18. Dennis finished the night with 5 carries for 98 yards, including the TD runs of 8 and 47 yards. He also contributed greatly on the defensive side of the ball from his strong-safety assignment.

“Lucas is a gifted runner,” said Canes head coach Alphonso Bryant.

“He has the balance and vision you look for in a running back. He also can and will plant his foot and accelerate into the hole. He’s a tough young man who doesn’t shy away from contact.”

Defensive co-coordinator and associate head coach Herbert James shared similar praise about Dennis on defense. “Lucas has a keen understanding of his responsibilities.

His speed, quickness, and toughness separate him from most high school players. Lucas has the potential to excel at the next level.”

In addition to his football prowess, Dennis advanced to regionals in Coral Shores’ inaugural FHSAA boys weightlifting season last spring. Lucas, who weighed 145 pounds at the time, bench-pressed 220 pounds in route to his state advancement.

Lucas was also singled out for his time and commitment to The Upper Keys Foundation’s Hurricane Dorian Relief Mission. “Lucas contributed a ton of time to our collections,” James said. “He has consistently been a leader in our UKF initiatives in his years with us. He does a great job of representing Coral Shores.”

Everglades roundtable brings urgency, collaboration to forefront JIM McCARTHY

ederal, state and local officials voiced urgency and stressed collaboration during an Oct. 19 roundtable on Everglades restoration at Islamorada’s Founders Park Community Center.

Talks kicked off the U.S. House Resources and Environment Subcommittee’s work to establish a blueprint for the Water Resources Development Act of 2020, which authorizes spending on water resource projects like navigation, flood control and water supply for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Sitting on the subcommittee, and in attendance for the roundtable, were U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who serves as vice chair, and U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano, of California, who serves as subcommittee chairwoman.

WRDA legislation provides funding for a two-year period and was last authorized in 2018. With 2020 around the corner, Napolitano noted that enacting WRDA for another two years demonstrates commitment to water resources in Florida and throughout the country. Napolitano’s first visit to

Islamorada ended with an airboat tour of the Everglades.

“If we are serious about 21st century infrastructure, we’ve got to do better than the status quo,” she said. “WRDA is the next opportunity to evaluate particular recommendations, take them back (to Washington, D.C.) and discuss with the full committee and the Senate.”

Every aspect of life is connected to clean water, as Mucarsel-Powell noted in her opening remarks that a healthy flow from Lake Okeechobee is vital for farmers in Homestead and tourism in the Keys. And she said the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) has been the blueprint to do just that. Authorized by Congress in 2000, the plan to restore, preserve and protect the south Florida ecosystem through a number of projects has been plagued by funding and lack of urgency. The plan consists of 68 modifications to central and south Florida infrastructure.

Joining the congresswomen were Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Noah Valenstein; Mary Barley, of the Everglades Foundation; as well as Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis and Village Council member Cheryl Meads, who also serves on the South Florida Water Management District board.

Barley noted that the CERP authorization process by Congress is slowing the Everglades Restoration process, since each project needs a separate approval. And that leaves Everglades constantly vulnerable to national infrastructure politics. Since 2000, there have been two seven-year periods where WRDA saw no approval, Barley said.

“That’s 14 years of projects that we could not get through,” she said. “The CERP planning process is robust to produce some projects that meet objectives Congress laid out in 2000. Let’s get on with the rest (of the projects) so we can finish the program for the Everglades and the millions of acres of federal assets including national parks, a national sanctuary and a national preserve.”

Barley said there have been glimpses of resolve in terms of moving projects along. In 2013, the second phase of the Tamiami Trail project was accelerated and completed in record time. In 2017, the state accelerated Everglades reservoir planning.

And just this week, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that construction will be expedited on the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir Project. The joint restoration project will see the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructing the storage reservoir while the South Florida Water Management District constructs the water-cleansing stormwater treatment area.

Overall, Valenstein said, he hopes opportunities for funding to implement projects move faster.

“Whether it be block grants for states, let’s empower the state to move forward. Any opportunity we can find to reduce time it takes to get a project done is going to benefit not just the environment, but the momentum we’re seeing as a state,” he said.

onroe County District 1 Commissioner Danny Kolhage has resigned from office one year before his term ends.

“I regret to say that other personal commitments make it impossible for me to fulfill the duties of County Commissioner in a manner the people of the county deserve,” Kolhage said in his resignation letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Kohlage’s term was set to end in 2020. Even before he announced he would be resigning early, two experienced politicians had declared a bid for his seat — former Key West Mayor Craig Cates and current Tax Collector “Dee Dee” Henriquez. Cates has raised $32,400 in campaign contributions and Henriquez has $5,150.

According to Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin, it’s up to DeSantis to appoint someone to fill Kohlage’s term. The state statute does not define a time frame for the new appointment.

Kolhage added that it had been his “honor and privilege” to serve Monroe County for the last four and a half decades. Before joining the BOCC, Kolhage served as the Monroe County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

County commissioners serve four-year terms, and Kolhage is in the third year of his second term. He also serves as mayor pro tem.

Of Kolhage’s resignation, Mayor Sylvia Murphy said, “After all the years he’s worked for the county, he deserves a break, but I truly hate to see him go. He will leave such a huge hole.” She added, “I’m sure it will be filled by the governor well, but Danny will certainly be missed.”

According to Florida law, after DeSantis accepts Kolhage’s resignation, he will appoint someone to fulfill the remaining portion of the term. On this point, Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi added, “Looking into the future, we will have a new face on the commission. I look forward to seeing who the governor will appoint to fulfill the position.”

Kolhage’s district includes parts of Key West, Stock Island and Key Haven.

In 2020, voters also will determine the commissioners for Districts 3 and 5. Currently, Heather Carruthers is running unopposed for District 3. Mike Forster, a village councilman in Islamorada, has put his hat in the ring for the District 5 seat, currently held

by Sylvia Murphy. She has said she would run again, but has yet to file. Forster has raised $20,000 to fund his campaign.

t the October Board of County Commissioners meeting in Marathon, county commissioners considered “green” issues, voting to approve some while continuing to research others.

Commercial cardboard recycling The BOCC voted to finalize solid waste collection service rates for commercial property for fiscal year 2019-20, but not before a speaker from the community brought up the fact that Key Largo businesses — including restaurants and hotels — have no effective way to recycle cardboard. Waste trucks no longer pick up cardboard freestanding from businesses, and most cardboard doesn’t fit in existing recycle bins. The result is that most of it gets thrown away. “Our recycling rates are not very good for such an environmentally-conscious county,” lamented the speaker.

Cheryl Sullivan, the county director of solid waste and recycling, reassured the audience that cardboard can still be taken to transfer stations for no charge. Commissioner Heather Carruthers, mystified by the complexity of the process of cardboard recycling for Upper Keys businesses, said, “we need to make some adjustments.” She wondered why Key West requires breakdown of cardboard that then is taken up by trucks. “I don’t understand why that isn’t the case countywide,” said Carruthers.

Sullivan mentioned the need to keep talking with waste management service providers to see what other solutions they could come up with on cardboard as it hadn’t been previously contemplated, and County Attorney Bob Schillinger was tasked with fleshing out what contract

changes would be needed to ensure cardboard recycling is possible.

Residential cardboard recycling is still picked up from homes countywide.

Public transportation and bicycle stations Commissioner David Rice described the successful “jointpartnership” among Marathon, Monroe County and Key West, which the commissioners extended for 10 years, through 2030. He said, “To successfully encourage people to take public transportation, it has to be convenient, comfortable and timely.” Moving for approval, Rice hoped that the resolution would allow for buses to run the course roughly once an hour. The commissioner additionally acknowledged the difficulties of that “last two miles” from the bus stop to where people work and offered the shuttle services as a “first step.”

New FDOT grant money was also discussed, which is slotted to add bicycle and pedestrian facilities to the 62 highest-use bus stops within Key West up to Key Colony Beach. The funds would additionally be used to build shelters, add lights, add and maintain trashcans, provide maps and even create bicycle fix-it stations with pumps and racks.

All these measures are meant to encourage use of the bus-shuttle system and to pave the way for an eventual Keys-wide system.

Countywide straw ban During commissioners’ comments, Carruthers requested that staff research a county-wide ban.

Carruthers said, “Key West did it already, and I’m not sure why we haven’t yet.” County Attorney Bob Schillinger offered to circulate the Key West ordinance for BOCC discussions, likely in December.

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary will hold a public meeting at the Marathon Middle High School auditorium at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, to take oral public comment on the Restoration Blueprint.

The draft proposals recommend a range of potential changes to existing boundaries, regulations, marine zones, and the non-regulatory management plan. The Restoration Blueprint is available at floridakeys. noaa.gov/blueprint. Oral public comment is limited to three minutes with speaker signup available beginning at 5:30 p.m. Groups are encouraged to designate a speaker. Oral statements can be supplemented by detailed written comments submitted at the meeting or online at regulations.gov.

As a lifelong resident of the Keys and a recreational and marine life fisherman, I’ve spent the last 45 years on these waters. Some of my earliest memories are fishing on my grandfather’s boat. He was a lobster and stone crab fisherman in the 1970s and ’80s here in Marathon.

Our environment in the Keys has changed since then – and not for the better. There are many reasons for this. Some are completely out of our control, but some aren’t. If 10 stressors in the environment create negative impacts and we can reduce 2, 3 or more, then shouldn’t we? We must change with the times and the shifting baselines that we are all seeing.

Of course, we don’t want to put hardworking folks out of business, but we can’t sit here for another 20 years with business as usual. If we do nothing to counteract these stressors now, the ecosystem will continue to degrade, and we will lose our way of life and the Keys as we know it. We need effective change that still allows compatible uses where possible.

“Limited use” has everyone riled up, but it’s not unreasonable. Our reefs entertain hundreds of people daily, and nearly every mooring ball is 2 boats deep. These reefs suffer with this much use. Unfortunately, limiting commercial use on these reefs to just “Blue Star” operators won’t do enough. Within a year, most commercial operators will be Blue Star anyway, so the same amount of people will be using our reefs. Sure, they will be a bit better educated, but the reefs will still be overused. Since two thirds of our high relief spur and groove reefs are already contained in SPAs, a stronger solution would be to change a small percentage of each existing SPA, say 25-33%, into conservation areas where only active coral restoration researchers and workers can go.

We need to support reef restoration through transplanting of corals. Our reefs are so void of live corals that without active restoration it is highly unlikely that it can recover. Without healthy corals, we don’t have fish to see, catch and eat.

SPA zones are ineffective in protecting resources. Instead, we should determine what the goal is in each proposed SPA and ensure it’s being addressed. For example, if we want to protect an area from anchor damage, make it a no-anchor zone. Then, all user groups can still utilize the area while protecting it from anchors. If the area truly needs to be closed, then it should be closed to all user groups, since excessive diving still damages the benthic habitat.

So, I would be more for no-anchor zones or full conservation areas, if that need is demonstrated.

I wonder what kind of issues a large no-anchor zone like the one proposed off Key Largo (134 square miles) may cause. We certainly don’t want to make a change that might make things less safe on the water – for divers, fishermen, etc. I think this suggestion needs some more thought and discussion.

The small “postage-stamp” type SPAs where divers might be in the water should be idle speed only. Dive boats are currently legally required to hoist a dive flag prominently, and everyone else operating near that vessel should be driving slowly already. So, I’m not sure how much of an issue this is? I will say that for the larger proposed SPAs, if a vessel is running in 30 feet of water in Hawks Channel with no dive boat around, I don’t agree it needs to be an idle zone. If the SPA is 1-2 miles wide and runs from the shore to the reef, this would be an unnecessary inconvenience with no known net gain.

In the Middle Keys, there are proposals for idle speed around the banks in the bay. If the areas around the banks are held close to the shallow water and not too big, then a regulation like this could keep our flats safe from boat propeller damage. However, unless these areas are marked and included on GPS systems, I question the effectiveness. Still, it might be worth trying to stall the increase in prop scarring.

The good news is, no matter if you agree with my thoughts or not, if you have concerns of your own, you can be a part of the process and be heard. Make official comments, and if enough of us feel strongly about a topic, good or bad, that will come through in the process. It is my job as a member of the sanctuary advisory council to stand up for my constituents and voice our concerns and I want to encourage all of you to do the same.

First State Bank has promoted Judelys Valladares to Islamorada assistant branch operations manager.

Valladares joined First State Bank in March 2016 as a teller in Marathon, and in November 2016 was promoted to lead teller.

Employee of the Quarter Ariel Sanchez was recognized as the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s Employee of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2019.

Sanchez has been employed with the authority for four years and is the executive assistant for the Human Resources Department.

The authority said Sanchez is known for her follow-through and dedication, and for her enthusiasm, which extends to the community where she takes the lead in many community service events. Sanchez often masquerades as the authority’s mascot, Precious the Water Drop.

arsyfort Reef has presented a formidable navigational hazard to mariners since boats first began sailing through the Straits of Florida.

In fact, Carysfort was considered the most dangerous tract of coral in the whole of the Florida Reef, with approximately one-quarter of all the ships to wreck along the reef attributed to it.

To be fair, there was a time when Carysfort was also used as an umbrella term for all Key Largo reefs.

How did the reef get its name? While not the first ship to wreck at the site, the reef’s namesake was the H.M.S. Carysfort, an 118-foot British frigate armed with 24 9-pound cannons, four 3-pound cannons, and a number of guns on swivels. The Carysfort hit the reef on Oct. 23, 1770. The good news about the wreck was that no lives were lost, the ship was ultimately refloated, and it sailed away under its own power.

ROTH LEAVES LASTING LEGACY

H

Former sheriff remembered for his service

e was kind. He was fair. Over and over, the people who knew former Monroe County Sheriff Rick Roth repeated those two facts about the top man in Keys law enforcement for two decades. He passed last week, on Oct. 15, 2019.

He was hired onto the force in 1965, as a radio dispatcher. He rose through the ranks to road officer, detective and sergeant in Marathon. In 1990, the governor appointed Roth to finish the term of his predecessor, J. Allison DeFoor, who had left the job more than two years before his term ended. Because more than two years were left on his term, Roth still had to run for election. He got the two-year nod and kept winning elections for a total of four, four-year terms, serving as sheriff from 1990 to 2008.

Current Sheriff Rick Ramsay served as Roth’s undersheriff for nine years.

“He was patient, soft-spoken and a diplomatic person,” Ramsay said. “He taught me about finding the common ground in the middle. It was a good experience.”

It is a hallmark of Roth’s presence, Ramsay said, that he was, and will be, remembered long after stepping down from office.

“People asked me all the time, ‘How’s he doing?’” Ramsay said, adding that to this day when he’s introduced, sometimes the speaker mistakenly calls him by his predecessor’s name.

“That’s not a bad thing. You know you’ve left a good legacy when people remember your name 11 years after you’ve stepped down from office. I considered him a friend and we spoke and visited often.”

Roth’s career wasn’t only long-lived, but also interesting and innovative. While he met his wife in the Keys while serving in the Navy and stationed in Key West in the late ’50s, he would leave the islands to return to his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

They would come back on the heels of Hurricane Betsy, a Cat 3, in 1965. His first day on the job as a radio dispatcher was coordinating disaster relief. In the 1970s, the agency fought a war on home turf to end drug smuggling. In 1980, it dealt with a massive influx of Mariel Boat Lift immigrants. The jail on Stock Island was built on Roth’s watch, too. He also started the animal farm under the sheriff’s headquarters.

“If it was a stressful day, Rick would just go out and walk around the farm for a while,” said Ramsay. “He loved animals.”

While Roth routinely gave the credit for the Trauma Star program to then undersheriff Bill McDonald, it was during his tenure that the program came to be and he was enormously proud.

By the beginning of 2009, Roth was fully retired and had sprouted a healthy beard. He spent his time in his woodshop, turning beautiful canisters and creating clever wooden clocks.

He also volunteered at the Wild Bird Center in Marathon, building cages and rescuing wayward and injured animals. He tended a beautiful garden at his home on Grassy Key and was also an accomplished mason, building the home’s custom fireplace.

Roth lost his wife of 57 years, Sandra Handley Roth, in 2016.

He is survived by daughters Cathy North of the Keys and Deanna Roth of Stuart, and granddaughter Rayna Roth, who is a student at Florida State University.

They remember their dad and grandfather with lots of love.

Deanna said he taught her to sail … or, rather, have fun doing it.

“He’d tell me to jump off the bow and be ready to scoop me up at the stern. He taught me gymnastics and would challenge me to do better.

He’d say, ‘I bet you can’t do it for 30 seconds’ and I’d say, ‘Yes, I can!’

I didn’t realize until much later that a lot of things he taught me was basically beginners’ yoga.”

Cathy’s favorite story of Roth is about the time he was, to the untrained eye, caught littering. Every morning, her dad would take a bag and pick up garbage on one side of Guava Avenue before carefully placing it next to the stop sign, crossing the highway and getting a newspaper. Then he would cross back, pick up the bag and pick up garbage on the other side of the avenue.

“Well, one day, some man saw him putting the bag down by the stop sign and said, ‘I don’t know how you do it where you’re from, but we don’t litter in the Keys.’ And my dad said, ‘You’re right. I’m sorry.’

He let the other guy ‘win’ because it was the right thing to do,” Cathy remembers, smiling, A service was held Oct. 19 at the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea.

t Coral Shores, students in the culinary classroom are hard at work learning the skills and techniques of food preparation and cooking. Under the direction of culinary teacher Corie McGraw-Abel, the program is climbing to new heights as the interest level grows.

Add to that a $50,000 grant McGraw-Abel recently secured from the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association for new equipment and a makeover, and the culinary program at Coral Shores is about to get even better.

“I was like, ‘oh my gosh. This is crazy,’” McGraw-Abel told the Weekly in a recent interview.

The FRLA is in its second year providing funds for a kitchen remodel to a Florida ProStart high school. From culinary techniques to management skills, ProStart curriculum provides real-life experience opportunities and helps students build practical skills and a foundation that lasts a lifetime.

Because Coral Shores is a ProStardesignated school, McGraw-Abel applied for the grant by sending in pictures of the kitchen and explaining in an essay why the program needed the funds. The culinary classroom is pretty large — one that would make any executive chef jealous — to give culinary students the space they need to work.

Old and outdated equipment will be replaced with updated appliances.

“It’s going to provide more opportunity and more ability to do things to cater to the students and their learning experience,” McGraw-Abel said. “Lynne

Hernandez, regional director of FRLA, and Laura Ciampa, a local FRLA member, go up to Tallahassee when the FRLA Educational Foundation Board meets so they can fight for our area and the things we need.”

McGraw-Abel is in her fourth year as culinary teacher at Coral Shores. In that time, enrollment in the program has doubled. Seniors Susie Gutierrez and Daniel Koerperich both praised it.

“It’s a great experience and a great atmosphere where we learn to cook,” Gutierrez said. “And we have a great teacher in Ms. McGraw.”

“I’ve always enjoyed cooking, so this is a great program to learn how to prepare and cook food,” Koerperich said.

With 35 ProStart culinary programs in the state, Hernandez said the Coral Shores culinary program qualified between the extreme need following Hurricane Irma and McGrawAbel’s amazing work in turning the attitudes of kids around and getting them excited to cook.

McGraw-Abel’s work in building the culinary program up is gaining the attention of many. Principal Blake Fry said she’s been a magnet for kids who are taking hold of the certification process and getting hands-on experience.

As for the 20-year-old kitchen, Fry said it’s time for a makeover.

“The program’s significantly unique down here,” Fry said. “It’s what we do down here. You go to any restaurant, you see these kids. It’s giving them this opportunity of getting out of the ordinary, traditional lifestyle of the restaurant and pave a pathway for a career in it. This is pretty significant.”

‘CHEMO COLD CAPS’ COULD LESSEN HAIR LOSS

Cancer gets real with a single word — a prefix, actually, and predictions of hair loss, weight loss, wigs and

weakness.

Most patients, upon receiving a breast cancer diagnosis, immediately imagine themselves without hair.

In Key West, Alyson Crean, public information officer for the City of Key West and the Key West Police Department recently defeated breast cancer following surgery, five months of chemotherapy, radiation and followup infusions.

And she faced it all head-on. Bald, bold and prepared for battle.

“Not hiding my baldness made me feel like a warrior,” said Crean, who never expected the compliment, “You’ve got a great skull.”

But the hair loss typically associated with chemotherapy affects women differently, especially those with young children, or in cold climates.

Emerging technology, in the form of “cold caps,” is showing promising results in preserving hair in women undergoing various forms of chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment.

The tight-fitting caps are worn during chemotherapy infusions and are cooled to -15 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

“Cold caps and scalp-cooling systems work by narrowing the blood vessels beneath the skin of the scalp, reducing the amount of chemotherapy medicine that reaches the hair follicles,” Pam Harrison wrote in a 2017 article, “Scalp Cooling to Prevent Chemo Hair Loss Shows Promise,” for Medscape Medical News. “With less chemotherapy medicine in the follicles, the hair may be less likely to fall out. The cold also decreases the activity of the hair follicles, which slows down cell division and makes the follicles less affected by the chemotherapy medicine.

“It’s important to know that cold caps and scalp cooling systems may not work for everyone,” Harrison wrote.

“Research results show that cold caps and scalp cooling systems were considered highly effective in 50% to about 65% of the women who used them.”

Dr. Howard (Jack) West, of the Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, said that clinicians have not prioritized hair preservation during chemotherapy as much as they perhaps should have based on what matters to patients.

Hair loss is not a trivial consequence of chemotherapy for many patients, he emphasized.

"I think many people, especially women, may factor the potential for alopecia into their decision about receiving chemotherapy, and this could potentially lead to patients being undertreated because of their concerns about this side effect," West said.

Women who use cold caps are advised to treat their hair gently and avoid blow-drying, hot rollers, straighteners and infrequent shampooing.

The cost of using the caps varies depending on whether the patient buys or rents one from the cancer center.

“Some users have said the cost of the caps is comparable to the cost of a having a wig made,” Harrison wrote.

Financial assistance may be available for patients interested in the cooling caps. The Rapunzel Project is a nonprofit organization that helps women and men undergoing chemotherapy access and use scalp-cooling technology to help keep their hair. The Hair to Stay Foundation also offers grants to pay for scalp cooling costs.

C Holmes, imaging director at Mariners and Fishermen community hospitals, describes the technological advancements in screening as “Flintstones to Jetsons.” With all the progress, the most common cancer in women, breast cancer, is one of the most treatable forms.

One of three diagnostic imaging service locations in South Florida is at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier.

Holmes, who’s served as imaging director the past five years, says Mariners offers a full scope of imaging services, including the most advanced technology like 3D mammography.

“It’s been tremendous,” said Holmes, who started in the field 20 years ago as a technician. “We were taking images on film and developing them. Over the years we got into a digital format, which has meant enhanced image quality and computer software.”

Earlier this year, Mariners added the SPECT/CT (Single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography) to its arsenal of advanced technologies. The piece of equipment, which was obtained with help from donors and those who supported the Bougainvillea Ball in 2018, takes two different kinds of scans that are merged together to pinpoint any abnormality. It can detect whether there’s a tumor, rapid activity or just bones healing from treatment.

So what’s the benefit behind all of this advancement? Holmes said computers are helping radiologists diagnose more accurately.

“Sometimes they’re like a grain of sand in the tissue. The sensitivity of equipment has improved drastically,” Holmes said.

With advanced breast imaging

Earlier this year, Mariners added the SPECT/CT to its arsenal of advanced technologies.

techniques, including digital and threedimensional mammography, breast MRI and ultrasound, Holmes stresses the importance of annual screenings.

The earlier breast cancer is detected and diagnosed, the easier it is to treat.

Holmes knows that well through personal experience with his mother.

“We caught it early enough and took the necessary steps, and now she’s in remission,” he said. “We never would have known without the screening. If you’re not getting screenings, you’re putting it off or you don’t want to go, you should go because the earlier we can detect, the greater the success rate.”

On the treatment side, the Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, is a member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Alliance, a collaboration aimed at improving patient access to the latest and most effective cancer treatment advances and cancer care — one of those being proton therapy. It’s an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses highenergy protons to treat tumors.

Unlike traditional radiation therapy, which uses X-rays, proton therapy uses streams of particles, called protons, to deliver radiation dosages to the cancer cells. Since protons completely stop inside the tumor, the specific radiation dose is delivered solely to the tumor without injuring the surrounding healthy tissue. In standard photon treatments, X-rays pass through healthy tissues and organs on the way in and out of the body, delivering doses to healthy organs.

Full name? Nickname? Kathleen Snow. Kathy with a K. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Ridley Township, Pennsylvania. We started coming down here in 1996 as snowbirds, so we’d be here for 6 months and back in Pennsylvania and Delaware for 6 months. And then in 2003, we decided to stay full time.

Why did you decide to move here full-time? My husband took an early retirement, and I started my own consulting business. All I had to do was live near an airport, so that was one of the main reasons. We got tired taking care of two homes. It’s a lot of work. And we love it here, we love the people.

Are you still a consultant? I retired from my consulting job in December 2016. The people at the Caribbean Club are my friends, and I work on Sundays during the day. This isn’t a job; this is fun. Meet great people; beautiful view; Keeps me busy, especially now without Bob.

athy Snow sits at Caribbean Club, wearing a bright pink shirt with a cancer ribbon. The words “It feels good to be strong” encircle the iconic breast cancer image. “I wear pink every day in October,” she said.

Snow was diagnosed with fast-growing breast cancer in June 2011. With the support of her husband, Bob, her family, and her close-knit Keys friends, she underwent a bilateral mastectomy and one year of chemo. “They’re my everything, my life,” Snow said about her support network. And now? She’s cancer-free. “I’m healthy. I’m 73, and I’m lucky to be. Just very lucky,” she acknowledges.

As she sits down with Upper Keys Weekly, friends come by to give her hugs, ask how she’s doing, and tell the Weekly what an incredible person she is. “Do you know her last name? And do you see the color of her hair? I call her Snow White, and I love her!” said an enthusiastic and effervescent Ricky Cortina.

This past year, Snow’s husband passed away from lung cancer. “He died in my arms,” said Snow. She holds her phone close to her heart, before turning it around to display her background image. It’s Bob, smiling back at her in a pink tank top. “My husband wore pink every day of October. It was his thing. I promised him I would keep it up, so I do.”

There are so many reasons cancer sucks. Snow summarizes it: “I was just gonna say, cancer sucks because cancer sucks.” But she doesn’t let it keep her down. Instead, Snow stays active in the fight against the disease and in her striving to keep living a full, happy life.

To the first end, Snow is very involved with the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. Every year, she and friends participate in a 5-mile fundraising walk from Sharkey’s to the Caribbean Club. “One hundred percent of the money goes to the nonprofit and hospice,” said Snow. “It doesn’t go to research. It goes to families here in the county going through it to help them with their everyday living expenses – food, rent, whatever they need.” Cortina chimes in, “If that’s her walk, that’s my walk. I’ll be there!”

Snow smiles with gratitude. “I have a wonderful support system here. The people are truly wonderful. I am lucky.”

What’s something people don’t know about you? That I can’t retire. I have to do something. I work here on Sundays; I do trivia on Mondays; I just have to stay busy.

What’s a ‘locals only’ secret about life in the Keys that you’re willing to share? One of my favorite things with my husband to do is to go to Short Key. We call it Dog Key, ‘cause we can take a dog there. That was one of the things we loved to do — go during the week when no tourists were around and it was quiet and just us. We’d boat there and picnic. It was fun.

You’re well known in the community. What do you think you’re known for? Cortina jumps in, “Generosity and helping others.”

What are some of the things you’ve done to help others? I do the benefit walk every year. I pick up the cancer donation jars once a month. From here to Robbie’s, I collect them once a month. And my husband and I, if anyone needed anything, we just helped them. A lot of them are a lot younger and they’re like our kids – our Florida kids.

How did you feel when you learned you had cancer? I was scared. I can remember coming out of the building next to Mariners. I was in there, and they did a mammogram. The lady

told me ‘It looks like cancer.’ It was a growth, and they set up an appointment for the next day. I had to go up to Miami to get stuff done.

My husband was waiting in the car, and when I told him, we both just started crying. Then, we decided we weren’t gonna cry again, and that we were just gonna deal with it. And we did.

Who were you scared to tell? My kids. I eventually told them a couple days later. They were very upset, and they wanted to hop on a plane and get down here. I told them to wait until we knew what the treatment was going to be. I told them to wait. Then my daughter came down, and she stayed for a few weeks.

What’s your go-to drink after a long day? I’m not a big drinker but when I do, I drink Mic Ultra. Or iced tea.

What in your life are you most proud of? My family. My children. And my grandchildren. My grandchildren are just amazing. I have 3 – 28, 17, and 16. The oldest one, I started taking him on vacations just me and him when he was 2. When he got to 17, I took the two youngest ones.

Some of the places we’ve been the last 12 years are Italy, England, Paris, Switzerland. Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Alaska, and Costa Rica. I didn’t share them. I didn’t bring my kids or Bob. These were ‘Granny Vacations.’ They’re favorite.

What’s the most exciting project you’ve got coming up or looking forward to? One of the things I was looking forward to was to see the Eagles, a concert in Vegas. I just saw them at end of September, and it was the best concert of my life. They played for 4 hours. It was unbelievable. And I’m looking forward to seeing them again in 2020. I’m looking at LA and SF. And right now, spending Christmas with my grandchildren and children in North Carolina.

Has the word survivor changed in meaning to you? Very much. I knew that I had to survive it. I knew that I could. I knew I was strong enough. I had such a wonderful support system, I just, you know, decided. I wasn’t gonna think about it destroying my life. I was just gonna live my life the way I always did.

What was the biggest challenge about having breast cancer that people don’t realize? I think the biggest challenge is staying positive.

You have to stay positive because that’s what gets you through it. You don’t worry about losing your hair, losing your breast, your appearance. You just think about your family and your friends and moving forward. Getting through it. Being positive is the best thing. That’s what got me through it.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve taken from the entire experiences? Never give up. Stay positive. Life is short, enjoy it.

Did you do anything cool or different to commemorate being done with any treatments or being cancer-free? My friends Kristy and Kathy would drive me to chemo. I had to go up to Baptist in Kendall.

They would drive me up and we would play games, do trivia, Scrabble and stuff. And when I was done, they had a big party at my house. All my friends, all these guys were there celebrating me being cancer-free.

If you could snap your fingers and cure one thing about the world, what would it be? The way it is today, everybody fights over everything…. Hate. That’s the word, hate.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up every day?

Right now, I look at a picture of my husband, and I say ‘Good morning!’

Then I go in and check on our puppy, Morgan. And say good morning and feed her. And then I make a cup of tea. Morgan is 14½.

What’s your idea of the perfect weekend? It’s hard now without Bob here. I guess, just being here in the Keys with my friends. A beautiful view of the water. Just being with friends.

SHOVELS HIT DIRT Officials break ground on new courthouse and detention center

W

ork is underway to construct a new state-of-the-art courthouse and detention center on Plantation Key in Islamorada.

On Oct. 18, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the beginning of the Plantation Key Courthouse and Detention Center. The project’s 48,420 square-foot-facility is anticipated to take about 30 months to complete. The facility will house the 16th Judicial Circuit of Florida, Monroe County Clerk of the Court, State Attorney’s Office, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe County Public Works. Officials from all departments were on hand for the ceremony, as well as Mayor Sylvia Murphy and commissioners David Rice and Michelle Coldiron.

“There was a great deal of thought put into this project and I would like to express a special appreciation to staff and the consultants who juggled how to build this and keep everything going while we are under construction,” Rice said.

The cost of the new facility is estimated at $33 million. The tenants will continue to work in the old building adjacent to the construction while the new facility is built. According to Upper Keys historian Jerry Wilkinson, the original building, the sheriff’s substation, was built in 1958, with additions, like the courthouse and other government offices, dedicated in 1967.

ur day began at 7:30 a.m. when we met Capt. Casey Scott at the dock of Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo.

Once offshore, we got to experience the thrill of searching for a pelagic species, looking for frigates and lines of sargassum in the distance.

Scott’s years of experience were impressive, and thanks to his trained eye, he was able to spot from the bow of the boat a school of mahi yards out.

The chase was exhilarating, and with special guidance, we were able to land some impressive fish.

Toward the end of the half-day excursion, we stopped near a reef to catch some gray and yellowtail snappers. Scott was very knowledgeable about the various regulations put in place by NOAA and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and even suggested that we release the fish, which barely made it over the size limits — giving them a chance to grow bigger. This attention to detail showed the importance of harvesting mind-

fully and made the overall experience unique. Once back at the dock, Scott walked over to deliver our fish to the resort’s executive chef, Andy Papson.

“One of the exciting benefits of cooking with our guests’ catch of the day is the inspiration that accompanies the occasion,” he said. “I had the opportunity to prepare an almaco jack, a fish I rarely have the opportunity to play with. Curating a dish with something unique is always inspiring and then translates to new ideas and thoughts with my culinary team.

Getting local knowledge from Scott is always a great way to procure vision of how it has been prepared in the local area.”

After chatting with the culinary team and hearing their ideas for how to prepare the fish, we followed Papson to the rooftop garden where his excitement for fresh herbs and produce really came through.

As an appetizer, we were served a snapper ceviche. The use of raw fish was a great way to highlight the transition from dock to dish.

The main course resembled a masterpiece in cast iron, with mahi, yellowtail snapper, gray snapper and almaco jack all presented side by side family style, garnished with flowers and rooftop vegetables. Possibly the most eye-catching of all, however, was the snapper fried whole, which emphasized the fact that we were eating fish

from the sea that we caught with our very own hands.

Mindful harvesting and preparation of food demonstrated the environmental and health benefits associated with short supply chains. We left Baker’s Cay Resort with incredible memories from the fishing adventure and the breath-taking three-course meal, but perhaps what will stay with us and future participants the longest is the empowerment that came from knowing we could supply seafood for ourselves.

“By manifesting the guests’ complete experience, beginning with threading the line, to picking the seasonings and rounding out the meal with the perfect wine pairing, we hope that it is the genesis for thoughts beyond their stay and into their daily lives,” Boyd said.

Annual Witches’ Ride raises funds for cancer research

Participants rode bikes together to the Caribbean Club where a party ensued, including raffles, witches dance performance, costume and bike contests and more. The ride has grown from about 40 participants in its first year to almost 270 this year. The inaugural Witches’ Ride, spearheaded

by Key Largo School’s Pam Caputo and Coral Shores High School’s Michele Thiery, was held in 2014 in honor of Jared McPeak, a CSHS graduate who passed away from a brain tumor. That year, money raised went to cancer research, and in the years following has gone to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Florida Keys Hospice, Florida Keys Women’s Shelter, and the Joey Patterson Foundation. This year, all money raised was distributed among three deserving local families who have encountered hard times: the family of Stacey Lopez, single mother of three who tragically lost her life in a car accident; Ben Cosme, who has been waiting years for a kidney transplant; and Baby Noah, who has the very rare Niemann-Pick type C Disease.

LET’S TALK (CORAL) SEX MOTE RESEARCHERS TACKLE CORAL SPAWNING ASYNCHRONY TO MAKE “CORAL BABIES”

H

anna Koch and her team at Mote’s International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration (IC2R3) facility on Summerland Key play coral matchmakers to help our coral reefs.

They do so using reproductive interventions to assist with “coral sex.”

“We’re sexually propagating corals for research and restoration as part of the resilience-based restoration program here at Mote,” Koch explains. Sexual reproduction is crucial to the long-term persistence of coral reefs. It produces the next generation of offspring that can replenish depleted adult coral populations or disperse to establish new reefs. The process also creates genetic diversity, a critical component in adaptation to environmental stress or change. “We need corals to reproduce sexually for the survival of the species and for coral reefs as a whole,” adds Koch.

Broadcast spawning, where hermaphroditic corals simultaneously release gamete bundles of eggs and sperm into the ocean, is the first step of coral sexual reproduction.

After release, gamete bundles float to the water’s surface where they break open to separate the eggs from the sperm. Gametes from different parents cross-fertilize, forming embryos, which develop into free-swimming larvae and eventually coral recruits.

Recruits are larvae that successfully cement themselves back onto the reef. If they survive, these recruits become the next generation of corals in the Florida Keys.

At least that’s how it’s supposed to happen. Koch explains several reasons that this natural process, which has worked for millions of years, is failing for some species and regions. First, because of intense global and local stressors, coral populations are becoming smaller and more disconnected, she says. This lessens the chances of gametes meeting during broadcast spawning.

Imagine coral singles cruising the oceans, trying to meet each other, but someone keeps moving the singles bars further and further apart.

Second, there’s spawning asynchrony, a troubling trend that seems to be increasing for some species and areas. Mass coral spawning is triggered by specific environmental cues involving moon phases, water temperatures, wave action and several other natural signals. This is how an entire reef can spawn or “go off” within minutes, leading to the greatest chance for fertilization success. Because gametes remain viable for only a few hours after release, synchronized timing is incredibly important. Therefore,

Koch explains, “When environmental cues that corals rely on for synchronized mass spawning break down, you get asynchronous spawning and missed opportunities for fertilization.”

Finally, local environmental conditions linked to chemical pollutants and acute stressors can lead to failed sexual reproduction and recruitment, meaning corals cannot initiate sexual development and produce gametes or if they do, the resulting larvae have a hard time sticking back onto the reef to grow into adult corals.

Basically, the signals that have been telling all coral gamete singles to meet at the same singles bar at the same time for millions of years are failing, so they’re showing up at different times to different singles bars, or not at all. And should any happy coral couple successfully fertilize and develop into larvae, even those larvae are having a hard time making it back onto the reef.

Enter science. “Asynchrony is one of the biggest issues,” Koch says. “Without synchrony, every other step in the sexual cycle will fail.”

Koch explains what her team is doing to combat this. In-situ spawning nurseries like the ones at Mote provide optimal growth conditions so corals reach sexual maturity more quickly. For most corals, sexual maturity is size-, not age-, dependent; so, the faster they grow, the sooner they’ll be ready to reproduce. Then, they can be brought into the lab for more controlled and successful breeding. On land, scientists do not battle with unpredictable weather, predators of coral gametes, and unfavorable ocean conditions, so gametes can be more easily collected and fertilized. This is exactly what Koch and her team did this year.

During this year’s August spawning event, they brought 62 colonies of staghorn corals into their tanks. Nine of the 62 colonies released gamete bundles, ranging from a few to hundreds. Five of the nine spawned colonies released gamete bundles on multiple nights, with the two most prolific colonies spawning on different nights (asynchrony). Even so, Koch was able to produce 400 larvae from two genetic crosses. Ultimately, she ended up with 200 genetically distinct “coral babies,” or sexual recruits.

These babies are now happily growing in tanks at Mote. They will eventually be used to add fresh genetics to Mote’s Coral Reef Restoration Program for outplanting back onto local reefs. “This is a huge step for us, as this is our first home-grown batch of corals produced entirely from Mote’s own restoration broodstock, from start to finish,” says Koch. “Now, here at IC2R3, we can accomplish all aspects of both sexual and asexual reproduction in-house.”

The IC2R3 facility offers free public tours where visitors get behind-the-scene glimpses of Mote’s restoration activities in action.

Mote’s Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Founders Park in Islamorada. The family-friendly event is prepared to bring conservation and environmental exhibits, food, shopping, live bands, Florida Keys Brewing Co. pouring Mote’s Resistant Strain beer and a live painting by Pasta Pantaleo.

hey supply air while divers venture below the water surface to view reefs and marine life.

But what happens when tanks become rusted, corroded and ready for retirement? In Key Largo, they’re taking on a new use.

Every five years, cylinders must pass hydrostatic testing, a process used to inspect equipment like tanks for leaks and overall integrity. Such tests are required by the Department of Transportation for all gas cylinders as well as fire extinguishers filled to high pressures with compressed air and gases.

When tanks are condemned, they usually end up as scrap. Locally, Keys to Peace, a nonprofit organization building awareness and practice of peace through education and community activities, began a program dubbed Sounds of Peace Bells to make bells out of old scuba cylinders.

Dive shops and individuals contribute cylinders that no longer can be filled under high pressure. The most recent bell was made for Prana, a new store in Key Largo.

How are they turned into bells?

The bottoms are cut off and the tanks sandblasted. They are primed and painted by Florida artists. The tanks are then clear-coated by a local auto body shop. The valve stem is drilled to suspend them at the top and clappers installed. The finished tanks are suspended on handmade wooden frames.

What kind of sound is produced when the peace bells are rung? Melodious. No two tanks sound the same,

“We just got it recently. We wanted a lighthouse,” said Armbruster. “The purpose of Prana, we are here as a beacon for peace … for people to find their way. We offer different avenues for people to find inner peace.”

Describing designs on the back of the bell, Armbuster explained, “It is the flower of life. It represents creation of the universe. This is the infinity symbol over and over again inter-connected. It is the tree of life.”

Of intricate painted calligraphy, Armbuster said, “This is the ‘om’ symbol. It is a vibration frequency. Everyone vibrates om. When people do it together it is a balancing sound.”

“Om mani padme om” is a Tibetan mantra chant that means “jewel in lotus.” The lotus flower depicted on the peace bell symbolizes that there is always beauty inside.

ouglas Wartzok, provost emeritus and professor emeritus of biological sciences at Florida International University (FIU), will present the monthly FIU and Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center’s Ocean Life Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Murray Nelson Government Center. His talk will focus on the issue of noise in the ocean, especially in terms of sonar, seismic and marine mammals.

“Jacques Cousteau once talked about the quiet ocean. Well, it’s not really quiet,” said Wartzok.

“The ocean is reasonably noisy, and the animals have learned to adapt to that,” he says. However, in the 1960s, the navy began to use sonar to locate things and to explore the ocean floor. Unfortunately for many whales and marine mammals, the frequency and sound of sonar is similar to the sounds of their predators – killer whales.

“The emerging hypothesis is that sonar is viewed by these animals as a super-predator. That’s why they respond as they do,” said Wartzok.

He explains how whales will ascend and descend more slowly than in

cases where no sonar interferes with their diving. And, he adds, whales will change their behavior to try and move away toward beaches, getting stuck. “Deep-diving whales don’t know what to do, and when they encounter a gently-sloping beach they don’t have experiences to know how to extract themselves,” he said. “Then, in some cases, when they swim rapidly they end up overheating themselves, if they can’t dump all that heat into colder, deeper water, they basically die of heat stress at the surface.”

Wartzok also examines seismic activities, wherein sawed-off air guns send a strong pulse through the earth. Trailing a hydrophone behind the ship, researchers are then able to get an idea of whether there are any oil pockets at the sea floor. “There is no evidence of animals dying after seismic, but the technology has caused animals to forage less and swim at reduced speeds,” he said. “It’s like having a music festival in your backyard.

While roughly 100 whales total have been injured by sonar since the 1960s, somewhere close to 600,000 die every year as fishermen’s bycatch.

“I think it’s important that people realize that worldwide, fisheries contribute close to 1,000 times the deaths,” said Wartzok.

“Look at the cumulative effect of all we’ve done,” he says. “Sound alone won’t drive these animals to extinction, but sound plus pollution plus fisheries bycatch? For some populations, the impact of all three might not be something they can survive.”

PINK ARMY Inaugural bra walk in Key Largo sees large support

ith bras and pink attire, a large contingent came out to take part in the inaugural American Cancer Society Key Largo Bridge Bra Walk on Oct. 20. The three-mile “tata trek” started at Gilbert’s Resort, went over the bridge to Blackwater Siren before returning to Gilbert’s. Monroe County sheriff’s officers were on hand to ensure walkers safely made it across the bridge. Cars passing by honked as walkers took to the bridge.
