The number of homes in Marathon that met FEMA’s “50% Rule” following Hurricane Irma. According to the city, about 30 of those were located in the Ocean Isle Fishing Village and another 50 or so in a mobile home park on 11th street. The latter agreed to rebuild voluntarily.

BLUEPRINT AND BEAUTY STANDARDS ADDRESSED City council has long philosophical debate about issues SARA MATTHIS

lorida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Superintendent Sarah Fangman was at the Marathon City Council meeting on Oct. 8 to address concerns about the Restoration Blueprint in the Middle Keys. Specifically, she addressed the “limited entry” proposal for Sombrero Light.

The blueprint language only addresses how to limit commercial operators (dive boats). Beginning in early September, some residents interpreted that to mean that private boats would not be allowed.

On Sept. 19, the Weekly published an article refuting that notion. “We didn’t speak to private entry at all, so silence has been interpreted that we mean to restrict people, community members, citizens and regular folks on their boat. That was never our intention,” Fangman said in the article published a month ago.

At the Marathon meeting on Oct. 8, Marathon Councilman Dan Zieg added an item to the agenda about the subject. He opened by showing an edited video clip from the September Monroe County Commission meeting that showed Beth Ramsay-Vickrey asking about the issue during public comment, and Fangman’s response. After the video showed, Zieg asked Fangman to clarify her statements again.

“It is a proposal intended to speak directly to commercial operator access, who would have commercial operator access. We are NOT proposing to prohibit recreational boaters,” said Fangman.

Councilman Mark Senmartin and Mayor John Bartus thanked Fangman for attending the meeting and promised to encourage residents to respond to the proposal.

“There are so many other important conversations that we need to have about the plan. It’s an important part of the process,” she said.

With the Marathon City election less than a month away, the council seemed willing to debate many philosophical points. After discussion about the Restoration Blueprint, the conversation moved to Marathon’s “look.”

Councilman Mark Senmartin put an item on the agenda titled “Design Standards for New Development Task Force.”

“If the council can agree to creating a task force, than this is the first step. Then we can create a task force, or a committee, that would give us non-binding suggestions. I specifically want to address new development; I’m not telling anyone to knock down their buildings or change the windows,” Senmartin said.

Bartus noted that the city convened a very similar task force in 2001 facilitated by mainland consultant Tony Nelessen. It was hundreds of pages of design suggestions with photos and graphics. “We had more buy in than anything else we’ve ever done as a city,” Bartus said. “But it has been sitting on the shelf ever since, gathering dust. It should be distributed before the meeting as study material.”

But the conversation never got that far. Councilmen Steve Cook and Dan Zieg objected.

“The private sector is already doing that,” Zieg said, about businesses creating attractive spaces to draw in customers.

Cook said a design standard would lead to a “homogenous” look and also said his past experiences with architectural standards in the north were not positive.

The council also discussed the possibility of sea level rise test sites in Marathon, ordinances governing garbage cans left out too long, flooding at the Florida Keys Country Club course encroaching on Sombrero Boulevard and the legality of cargo lifts.

The administrative appeal of the 1,300 affordable and workforce housing units that was set to take place in Marathon this week has been postponed. The appeal challenges former Gov. Rick Scott’s gift of extra building permits to address the crisis following Hurricane Irma. More details to come.

MARATHON (TO THE) RESCUE Firefighters donate a day in Bahamas SARA MATTHIS

his past week, three Marathon Fire Rescue firefighters traveled to Freeport, Grand Bahamas to install tarps on homes damaged by Hurricane Dorian early last month.

Marathon’s Jesse Fossum, Jorge Garzon and Weeber Marreio were accompanied by Tiffany Fossum, one of the department’s volunteers. In a single day, they were able to put tarps on eight roofs to make the homes habitable for the short term and hand out food and water for about 800 residents.

“We are extremely proud of them,” said the department’s logistics coordinator, Mike Card.

“It really speaks to the teamwork of this department.”

Two other members of the department covered the shifts to make the trip possible: Capt. Joe Forcine and Alex Bobadilla.

The group was led by the Marathon Lions Club’s Willie Gonzalez. Since the hurricane, Gonzalez and other Marathon volunteers have made three trips to the islands. Gonzalez and Freeport Lions Club President Dudley Bent leave again on the fourth trip on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Bent has been in the Keys for a few days, collecting contacts and resources to help his community rebuild. He said it will be a while before the islands are open again to tourists.

“There’s no airport. It’s been gutted. And no hospital; the doctors are operating out of tents,” Bent said, adding that UNICEF, Rotary clubs and the Lions club have been instrumental in helping Freeport recover.

Gonzalez has identified three main projects in Freeport. First is to rebuild the clubhouse, which sustained both wind and water damage. He said he is in the process of applying for grants to cover the cost. The second is to partner with other agencies to fix the Grand Bahama Children’s Home, an orphanage. The third undertaking is the most ambitious.

“We want to raise about $250,000 to rebuild the Walter Parker Primary School, Gonzalez said. “It is one of four middle schools that were damaged in the storm, but is in the best shape.”

Bent said the school, where his wife also works, needs a new roof, new ceiling, new computer lab (the machines were all destroyed), new paint and new basketball court. And it needs to happen fast: right now the student body is about 400 but will soon swell to 800 as it takes in students from neighboring schools that were destroyed.

Marathon Lions Club is still collecting monetary donations. Make the check out to the Marathon Lions Club and write “Disaster Relief Bahamas Fund” in the memo line. The checks can be dropped off at both Marathon branches of Centennial Bank.

n Oct. 11, the Marathon Weekly Newspaper and Marathon Chamber of Commerce hosted a forum for six candidates competing for three seats on the Marathon City Council. With the election less than a month away, candidates distinguished themselves by answering a dozen questions on a range of topics from the economy to the environment. The event was held at City Hall and a big audience listened intensely. At right are two of the questions and the candidates’ responses.

In 2018, the City of Marathon sent a resolution of support to Monroe County, which levied an ad valorem tax on Middle Keys homeowners to support indigent care — which means unpaid hospital bills — at Fishermen’s Community Hospital. Is that something you will continue to support?

JOHN BARTUS* Question 1: After Irma, Baptist could have pulled away but they showed a commitment to our community and the community needed to show a commitment to the hospital. It will be reviewed on an annual basis.

We get a chance to look at the books every year. The hospital is just one of the more critical areas. I will support that taxing district for as long as it is needed.

Question 2: The deeds that are on record do not have restrictions.

However, in the documents I saw, Switlik did donate Sombrero Beach to the county and was specific that it not be used for profit making ventures. I am old enough that I remember that when it was transferred to us. I do not support the use of Sombrero Beach for all sorts of willy nilly profit ventures. I do not support paid parking.

The beach should be a passive recreation facility for our kids, families and visitors. I would allow for nonprofits to put on events there. But otherwise, I draw the line. No.

STEVE COOK* Question1: I would support it. I am going to keep supporting this. We need growth for our city. We need fire department and police department, and we need the security a hospital gives us. If you have no hospital, that’s pretty much the death knell of the vacation industry. Originally, some of the messaging was unclear and there was inaccurate commentary. With the ad valorem tax, we are getting a hospital three or four years earlier than we would have had it.

Question 2: This is such a tough topic.

We did find there were no deed restrictions to whether we could make a profit or not on city property. But because that has been there for so long as a thought, we should try to honor that a little bit because it was a gift. The parking meters, we don’t know what that could turn into, it was only a discussion. We need to look at it and see if it really works for us. I’ve gotten lots of emails. People like it, people don’t like it. But profits could be moved around between all the city properties.

Since the City of Marathon assumed control of Sombrero Beach in 1999 when it incorporated, it has discouraged profit-seeking entities from operating at the beach. In the past, Marathon City Council has issued waivers for organizations putting on events for charity and profit. And, some businesses such as the ice cream truck and kayak tour companies do use the space without issue. Are you in favor of allowing for-profit or commercial entities to operate at Sombrero Beach?

ADAM GEANEAS Question 1: Having Fishermen’s Hospital and Baptist is a great asset to the city. I hope when the new facility is built, that Baptist sees they don’t need the money and that we don’t have to vote on it, hopefully.

I would not support it.

Question 2: I would put a resolution in place and govern accordingly so it’s not just “him” or “them” out there making money. If there are standards in place, and they are licensed through the city, that way we get the licensing money out of it. Why not?

EUGENE GILSON Question 1: We definitely need the hospital. Vacationers will come here with the hopes that we have a hospital in place. City Council worked well with the hospital to get it built quicker. I would support it, 100%.

Question 2: Yes, I think we need some revenue from the beach. Food trucks would be wonderful, I think that would make a great addition to the beach especially the ice cream trucks; every kid likes ice cream.

We have a playground going up and that’s exciting. I do feel like we should make something back.

JOHN KISSICK Question 1: Only a fool would say they don’t support a hospital. What we really need to see … is do we need to impose the tax. We need to see how much Medicaid money is going in, what grant money goes to the parent company, we have to see if they are making a profit or not. I want to see the money and then decide at that point if we need to impose the tax.

Question 2: I don’t have a problem with food trucks being there. If we get money to give food trucks a license to operate, that’s money for the city. Plus there’s tax money for selling food and ice cream. So, yes.

DAN ZIEG* Question 1: I am in favor of the MSTU. It gave us a good negotiation position with Baptist, and to have a MASH facility so workers could come from the mainland and our own workers could return after Irma. The MSTU shortened the build time from six years to two years. And you need to be cognizant, that three-quarters of this tax is paid by nonresidents and vacation rentals. The hospital is essential to our future for our residents and real estate values.

Question 2: There has been a story that goes around that the deed to the city came with title restrictions and we found that not to be true.

After Irma, we have $32 million in debts. I tried to identify further income or revenue that would be paid by tourists, not residents, to balance our budget. We need all the help we can get now. I would like to identify revenue systems.

GHOST MAY REVEAL $12 MILLION ‘KEY LIME TREASURE’ LOCATION The owner of a Caroline Street address in Key West may be sitting on $12 million in buried treasure, and a resident ghost just might be willing to help them find it.

I uncovered the story in a 1925 Key West Citizen while searching for a bit of Key lime history. It was front-page news, and a story that combines two of my favorite subjects. Let’s open the hatch and dive headfirst into the haunted Key Lime Pie Hole and see who wants to be a millionaire.

According to an article published on Sept. 10, 1925, tales of buried treasure on the rear of the property that formerly housed the old Masonic Temple had been rumored for some time in Key West, but details were scant and the exact location remained a mystery.

William Pent was living on Caroline Street with his family when a spirit appeared to him in a dream. “A man appeared to me and asked for a bit of black thread. I noticed he wore a bandage about his head, and this looked to be stained with blood, which gave the bandage a checkered appearance.

In my dream I gave the thread as asked, and watched to see what he intended to do with it. I saw him go to the back door of our house and tie one end of the thread there, and going a few paces away he disappeared.

I then awakened and thought no more of the dream until a few weeks later when the circumstances came vividly to mind.”

The article explains that a few weeks later, Pent was digging a hole to plant a Key lime tree. He struck a flint rock marked with crosses and arrows. Below that, he unearthed a can that contained a fragile flag, a quill pen and two charts splashed with blood. A message on one of the charts told of an Egyptian captain who sailed with a Spanish crew. They encountered pirates in the Gulf and he lost all but five of his men in the ensuing battle. They sought safe harbor at Key West, but his men were slain by natives and the captain was badly injured.

His final note said, ”I am dying and have buried the treasure my ship was carrying. It is twelve millions or more in gold. This treasure will make someone happy.”

A week after William Pent’s discovery, his father, Charles, was pulling weeds when he discovered an iron stake protruding from

the ground. He dislodged the stake, and beneath it found a small crockery jar with a wide, tightly sealed mouth. Upon breaking the seal he found a length of gold chain, a small gold locket, several small coins and some stones that looked like diamonds.

“As we examined the locket we found there was something in it, and upon removing the glass inside I found a paper folded several times, until it was small enough to fit under the tiny glass. This paper had strange characters on it, and none of us could make them out. ... The chart had a crude drawing on it. ... The drawing was of a mound from which protruded a forearm and hand. In the hand was clasped a dagger which pointed to the words — Go due south.”

The Pent family realized that these charts could lead to the buried millions, so they placed them in the care of a neighbor who owned a safe. The items were quickly returned because “it was believed that the keeping of the charts had brought a spooky feeling into their home.”

The charts and treasure were then placed in the care of another resident who, in true Key West pirate fashion, disappeared to Miami and was never heard from again.

The 1925 article interviewed a neighbor of the Pent family who awoke to the sound of shovels and discovered a hole in the ground about the size of a child’s grave. It also reveals the address of the original Pent family home, where workmen razing an old building found a few old Spanish coins after the Pents had moved on.

If you live on Caroline Street, or in the surrounding neighborhoods of Old Town, take advantage of the impending cool weather and dig a few holes in your yard.

You just might end up finding the $12 million treasure. Fill your holes back in with Key lime trees and you can pluck treasures right from their branches all summer long. THE FATE OF JOSHUA APPLEBY MARATHON HISTORY

J

oshua Appleby was Key Vaca’s most notorious wrecker. His more dubious years would come to an end when Commodore David Porter and his West Indies Squadron came ashore at his outpost, called Port Monroe, placed him in irons, and took him into custody.

Taken to Charleston, South Carolina, Appleby would be subsequently released and not spend time in jail. He would return to the Keys several years later and work as a wrecker, though not for long.

On July 27, 1837, he accepted the position of keeper at the Sand Key Lighthouse off of Key West.

In October 1847, family and friends would visit the old wrecker including his daughter, Eliza, her husband and son, her friend from Rhode Island and her adopted daughter. Days later, on Oct. 11, a powerful hurricane would rage over the Lower Keys. When it was all over, not only had the keeper’s home and the lighthouse tower been swept away, but the little spit of land called Sand Key, too, was gone. All those who had been at the lighthouse were washed out to sea and never seen again.

Special Olympics athletes bring home hardware from state championships

Three Special Olympics athletes from Monroe County recently returned from the state championships staged in Sebastian, Florida, with three gold medals, one silver medal, one bronze medal, and one 4th place finish. Kai Simcic-Swanton swam the 200m freestyle to earn a bronze, and the 100m freestyle to earn a silver. Emily Walker swam her way to a gold medal in the 25m breaststroke and finished 4th in the 25m freestyle swim. Michael Nerl earned a gold in the 50m breaststroke and a gold in the 50m freestyle. Gastesi runs marathon in Berlin Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi, 58, trained for and completed the 26.2-mile Berlin Marathon on Sept. 29 in Berlin, Germany.

“The good news is, I finished and beat 16,500 people,” said Gastesi. “The bad news is 29,500 people beat me.”

This is Gastesi’s second marathon; he ran the New York Marathon in 2003. He has plans to complete a marathon on all seven continents. Gas-

tesi plans to run his next marathon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in South America in June 2020, followed by Singapore in Southeast Asia in December 2020.

“Health and wellness are very important to me,” said Gastesi. “I hope this will motivate our Monroe County employees to try something exciting, like one of our great 5Ks around town.”

The county has a “Passport to Wellness” program that encourages staff members to participate in local races, even reimbursing up to $100 annually for community-organized foot, bicycle, or swimming events.

2. How long have you been playing golf? When I was 8 years old, I was watching my Grandpa watch a big tournament, and I thought it looked like it could be fun. I have been playing ever since, so six years now.

he Marathon High golf team had to travel to Key West Thursday after the king tide flooded their home course in Marathon. The Fins took on the Key West Conchs in 9 holes of golf. Marathon coach Tyler Wright said, “The season has been a great success for having a very young team; the players have a great attitude and take the game very serious.” This was the team’s last regular season match, but Fisher Coleman-Sayer will be continuing on to represent the Fins at districts on Monday, Oct. 14.

he review on Rock and Blues Muse sums up the impact of these young, Florida-based musicians: "Dynamism, precision, and outright fury. It’s like a three-pronged sonic offensive – the guitar pierces, the bass rattles, and the drums batter. For fans of the heavier end of blues rock, it’s a beating your eardrums will gladly take.�

Shaw Davis (guitar) and his bandmates, Bobby Van Stone (drums) and Patrick Stevenson (bass), will be featured at the Saturday, Oct. 19 Coral Head Music Fest at Marathon’s Community Park Amphitheater. Davis and company have serious energy on stage.

“For first-time listeners, it’s very in-your-face, almost aggressive.

But after the first hit, they get the soulfulness of it and realize what we are playing comes from deep within us,� said Van Stone.

The band’s third album is already recorded and undergoing the final touches before its release. The first two albums have garnered rave reviews. “They’re a three-man wrecking crew that infuse the blues with hard rock muscle to gratifying effect,� one reviewer in The Rock Doctor wrote of the second album, “Tales From the West.�

When asked about the band’s favorite crowd-pleasing tune, Davis just laughed and said, “the last one, that’ll keep them in their seats!�

Van Stone, however, identified one of their originals — “My Friend.� “You could say it’s a long journey of a song. It starts out quiet and emotional and then goes to big and bombastic in the solo, and then back down. I know our fans look forward to hearing that,� Van Stone said.

Davis said the band’s influences range from Jimi Hendrix to Phillip Sayce to Eric Tessmer to Black Sabbath and ZZ Top. One of his favorite songs to play is a cover of Hendrix’s “Peace in Mississippi.� It’s not a very well-known song, he said. “True Hendrix buffs will know where we’re coming from,� Shaw said.

Van Stone and frontman Davis have been friends since kindergarten, growing up near one another in Pompano Beach. Patrick Stevenson joined the group just recently, after an online introduction to one another’s work.

Davis said he picked up the guitar ‌ well, because another friend wasn’t very good at sharing and caring. “I would go over to play Xbox at a friend’s house but he only had one controller and he never let me play. But he had a guitar sitting in his closet. I think I was about 14 years old at the time and have been playing every day since,â€? Davis said. He has been a vigorous selfteacher. “I am learning every day, listening to everything whether it’s blues, rock or rap. I am looking for something that is coming from the right place and is genuine, open and honest. That’s what draws me to the blues — improvisation, and there’s no bullshit.â€?

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT

The Restoration Blueprint has a lot of information and a few topics have become the main talking points in our community. In previous informational sessions items like no-anchor zones, SPA expansions, and limited use areas have gotten a lot of attention. Below you will find my take on these three topics.

Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting will take place Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Marriott Beachside Hotel, 3841 N. Roosevelt Blvd, Key West. Members will discuss NOAA’s proposed changes to the sanctuary’s boundaries, marine zones, regulations and management plan. The sanctuary has expanded time allotted for oral public comment during the meeting, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Speaker signups are at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively. Meetings are streamed live on YouTube.

No-anchor zones, do we need them? How many anchors do you see on the reef, how many yards of anchor line, how many flipped over coral heads, damaged sponges, and why are boaters still using anchors designed to grab the reef? The Restoration Blueprint addresses this issue by the proposed no-anchor zones.

This is a necessary step and a good start to a very large problem. With that being said, I believe the main problem is the lack of respect and education for proper anchoring techniques. There are many commercial operators and local boaters that understand how to anchor their vessel properly and respect the benthic life their anchor could damage if done improperly. At the last informational session I made a comment to move forward with the no-anchor zones; however, do so with a permitting process that would allow educated individuals and commercial operators to anchor in these zones. This permit could be achieved by online education and annual renewal. This would greatly reduce the damage caused by anchoring, while at the same time not limiting the educated commercial operators and public boaters.

What is the purpose of a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA); why do we have them? These areas were established to protect shallow reef sites that are biologically important to the FKNMS. The blueprint proposes to expand on many of the current SPAs, as well as create new ones. One expansion, on the very well known site Alligator Reef, would extend the SPA boundary out to the reef shelf in 90 feet of water. If you dive or fish this reef shelf then you know how productive the fishery is there. By expanding the SPA zone to the reef shelf, fish would be protected as they travel to and from different depths and sections of the reef. More of their life cycle would be protected, allowing the fish to grow larger, spawn more, and create a healthier fishery. As shown by the current 18 designated SPA areas, this healthy fish population would continue to overflow outside of the SPA areas allowing fisherman access.

Limited use areas are becoming more popular on reefs worldwide. The FKNMS gets a lot of attention from commercial operators, local boaters, and weekend warriors. The blueprint proposes three limited use areas; these areas would be testing the concept to see if this management strategy could be a solution to the problem. The phrase “limited use” means the areas would be limited and not closed off. It was clearly stated at the last informational session that this proposal would allow certified Blue Star Operators and public boaters to use these areas, only limiting commercial operators who do not hold the Blue Star rating. In my opinion, this is not strict enough. Many commercial vessels, Blue Star Operators included, are simply bringing too many people to the reef each day. I believe to truly limit usage in certain areas, there needs to be a carrying capacity limit for commercial operators, Blue Star or not.

At the last informational session I gave a comment to move forward with the limited use areas in a way that allows the general public and commercial six-passenger vessels access. I believe many reefs are being overused and highly stressed simply because of the amount of traffic they receive. In my opinion the best way to limit usage on an area is to limit the amount of passengers a large commercial vessel can take to the reef on each trip.

Our backyard is changing and it is our responsibility to stay involved as the Restoration Blueprint further develops. The current blueprint has taken years of research and public input to develop. Your comments, thoughts, and ideas do matter and will be heard.

acksonville’s Void magazine just christened the Firewater Tent Revival the best cover band, best original band and gave it top honors for best song (“Wingnut”) in its 2019 readers’ poll.

Void calls the band’s style “psychedelic bluegrass,” but band spokesman Nigel Ledford says “a gang of old punk rockers gone vogue” works just as well — the sound isn’t quite bluegrass, folk or country music.

The band is playing three gigs in the Keys next week: At Key West’s Blue Heaven on Friday, Oct. 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 20 during the brunch hour. Then the band picks up on Sunday and heads to Marathon’s Overseas Pub and Grill to play from 4 to 10 p.m. to benefit a Middle Keys youth program, Champions for Change.

Firewater Tent Revival plays about 250 shows a year, mainly in North Florida but with recent forays into New Orleans and Tupelo, Mississippi … and now the Keys.

“We are so lucky because we have the love of committed fans. Committed? Is that right? Probably we could put them in an insane asylum, but we’re so lucky,” Ledford said.

Right now the band is in talks with a label about a possible full-length album to complement the two EPs it’s already recorded.

he challenge for a cause is simple: to paddle from Crane Point Hammock to Faro Blanco on Sunday, Oct. 13. The coven (warlocks invited and included) gathers at 4 p.m. for a 5 p.m. start.

“We’re gong to serve some sangria to our guests and then send them off,” said Crane Point Museum’s Charlotte Quinn. Oh, and there will also be beverage stops at Banana Bay Resort, Keys Fisheries and Courtyard by Marriott. The post-paddle party rewards paddlers with a free drink at the final stop at Faro Blanco’s Lighthouse Grill.

Faro Blanco’s Karen Thurman said the spell has taken effect and many witches are ready to fly.

“Witches on boards, warlocks on watercraft, flying monkeys on skiffs — it will be interesting to see what we get,” she said.

Paddlers are encouraged to wear costumes and also encouraged to put a buck or two in the cauldron for the Making Strides Walk, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and breast cancer awareness.

“This is a cause that’s near and dear to my heart,” said Quinn, “and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Comedy night benefits animal shelter

T

he comedians of Comedy Key West Club are taking their show on the road and traveling to Marathon for a special event. Laugh Your Tails Off is set for Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Faro Blanco Resort. The event will raise funds for the Marathon campus of the Florida Keys SPCA. “We’re really excited to bring comedy to Marathon,” said Joe Madaus. “I think its going to be a great line up.”

The line up includes C.J. Kelley, Andy Griffiths, Chad Newman and Gwen Filosa — all local talent, many of whom perform together in the Southernmost City. And they’ve got some serious street cred, too. Filosa will represent the Keys as she’s been selected to compete in Florida’s Funniest Females comedy show taking place next week.

Newman is, of course, the Keys film commissioner and has some funny bits developed from his total understanding of Keys politics.

Griffiths, a Monroe County School District board member said he’s developing some new material for the Nov. 16 show.

“I tried a Marathon joke out and it killed … in Key West,” he said, clearly delighted.

The VIP tickets cost $40 and include access to pre-party in the Captain’s Room, adjacent to the Lighthouse Grill. The doors open at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the party moves over to the hotel proper for the 7:30 p.m. show. General admission tickets are $25.

Marathon shelter director Tara Vickrey-McFarland said the proceeds from the fundraiser will equip the spay neuter trailer at the shelter. While the infrastructure is ready — new flooring, electrical and air conditioning, it needs the tools of the trade.

“Unfortunately, the surgical tools and supplies and drugs are quite expensive,” she said. “We need about $6,000.”

he Marathon Weekly published some terrible things about 2018’s second place spellers last year — the BPAS Me Another Beer team composed of the City of Marathon’s David Migut, Brian Shea and Cody Ward.

We stand by our statements.

Oh, and we challenge them to defend their honor on Friday, Nov. 15 for the 19th Not-So Annual Spelling Bee to benefit the Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys.

Doors open at 6 p.m. at Key Colony Beach City Hall and the spelling starts at 7 p.m.

It’s worth mentioning that the team of teachers from Stanley Switlik Elementary School is (usually) the team to beat. Frankly, they are terrifyingly good and it’s best not to provoke their ire. Also, watch out for that guy Doug Mayer. He’s all about the fancy medical terms.

So what kind of words might a speller expect in this classic contest?

Well, “tchotchke.” Or “bougainvillea.” Or, “prerogative.” Or, “pococurante.” And “forecastle” — it looks easy enough to spell until the poorly prepared realize far too late that it’s pronounced “folk-sel.” So, no, it’s not

easy. And still, about a dozen teams take up the challenge (almost) every year to support Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys.

Team fees (for three persons) are $200 and an extra, optional $75 “mulligan” lets the spellers survive a misspelled round. All ages are welcome, and there will be prizes for best spelling, best costume and most original team name. About 80% of the words are provided in advance — starting on Tuesday, Oct. 15 — to teams that have already registered.

“This is a really fun night,” said Habitat’s Chris Todd-Young, and said it’s an important fundraiser for the organization.

This is a spectator sport.

Hecklers are encouraged and food and beverage will also be for sale, courtesy of Centennial Bank. The spelling bee is sponsored by Baptist Health South Florida.

On Oct. 5, a full boat of scuba divers took part in the 21st annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest at Amy Slate's Amoray Dive Resort in Key Largo. The contest drew divers of all ages who used dive knives and carving tools to create their masterpieces while diving on Elbow Reef. First-place winners Josephine Walker and Stephanie McClary, a mom and daughter pair from Michigan, stunned everyone with their 3-D sculpture of two moray eels swimming over a glowing heart, with a battery-powered light, an homage to Amoray's logo.

C.F. MARTIN & CO. A legacy of fine stringed instruments since 1833

I

t has been a while since I have written a column on guitars. As many of you know, without guitars, my life would be immeasurably different. Learning to play guitar was probably the best decision I ever made. It opened up the world of music, songwriting and performance to me, and gave me the confidence to do whatever it is that I felt I needed to do through the course of my life.

My first guitar was an Epiphone dreadnought. It wasn't the best guitar in the world, but it was just what I needed to get started. For high school graduation, my parents bought me an Ovation Custom Balladeer. It had electronics built into it, and it was plugand-play stage ready. I played that guitar on stage for years until music took me in a different direction. For quite a few years after that, I was primarily an electric guitar player.

When I resumed playing music solo, I rediscovered my love of acoustic guitar. I ended up playing a lot of different brands throughout that time.

Takamine and Breedlove were the guitars that captured my imagination and my intent on bringing acoustic music to the stage. I went so far as to become an actual endorsed Breedlove artist — at the time, they were making great guitars. I still own some Breedlove guitars, and they are wonderful instruments.

But there was always a higher standard: guitars made by C.F. Martin & Co. Martin has been making guitars in the United States since 1833. After a few startup years in New York, they made the move to Nazareth, Pennsylvania in 1838. That is where they still make most of their guitars to this day.

Martin was the first company that popularized the dreadnought shape – a large, full body square shoulder guitar with loads of projection and bottom end. Martin dreadnoughts were and are played by so many people.

Among the more notable are Johnny Cash, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Clarence White, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, Tony Rice, the Avett Brothers, Jason Isbell, Dierks Bentley, Gordon Lightfoot, John Prine, Dwight Yoakam, Chris Cornell, Steve Earle ... and yours truly.

Martin dreadnoughts are still the guitar of choice in bluegrass circles … as well as folk, rock and acoustic music anywhere acoustic music is played.

When I was first learning how to play guitar, Martin guitars were the ultimate standard. And the top of the line dreadnoughts — the Martin D-41, 42, and 45 — were the unattainable dream guitars. Spruce tops, rosewood back and sides, and enough abalone bling on the guitar's trim — I am surprised I didn't drool more on Martin photos in guitar books.

Everything that a Martin guitar was promised to be, it is. They are that good. The awesome reality that I get to play a very nice Martin guitar whenever I play a gig is not lost on me. Every time I unpack my main performance Martin guitar, I consider myself one of the luckiest musicians on planet Earth.

When a musician plays a classic instrument, he or she becomes aware that the instrument will likely outlive the musician. At best, we are only caretakers of those instruments. We are fortunate to keep them for a while, make the best music we can, but also understand that our possession of these beautiful creations is fleeting.

Long after I am gone, the fact that these guitars will still help someone make beautiful music is a comforting and amazing thing.

In that spirit, I celebrate my guitars. I honor the trees that were cut down to produce the wood that my guitars are made of. I honor the spirit of the builders who created the amazing and beautiful instrument that helps me make my music. I cherish the moments I hold their work in my hands, and I pray that my music is worthy of their efforts.

ndrea Thompson’s credo is to teach survival swim to our babies and young children and this is how she

does it: Teaching babies and toddlers to float is a process — it’s a sequence that they learn. Young children naturally seek air and can learn to float very easily. What we teach them to do is how to flip over and float.

At the completion of six weeks (24 lessons, 10 minutes each) or once they have mastered the roll back to float, we test them.

The leading cause of death for children under the age of 4 is drowning and that is because 70% of the time they were not expected to be in the water. They may wonder out through the window or a dog-door and usually wear clothes and/or diapers.

There are five main tests (scenarios) we carry out to see how well they are able to come back to flotation.

For example: “penciling” to the bottom of the pool when accidentally walking over the edge of it. We would simulate different situations they may encounter — falling in backwards or head first while reaching for a toy. We test them in the worst-case scenarios, fully dressed.

We started the courses last April and by now 120 kids have been through the program. Another 200 are on the waiting list.

In the month of October we decided to carry out the float challenge called Floatober, or the October Float Challenge. We would like the parents or grandparents to submit photos of their kids or grandchildren floating and share them on our Facebook page or any social media outlet.

No matter the age, learning to float can save your life!

My name is Andrea Thompson. I was born in Michigan but was raised in West Palm Beach, Florida. I moved to Marathon in 1999 and became a Monroe County firefighter. My husband is also working for the Fire and Rescue.

We have two small children. I’m also the founder and president of the Florida Keys Drowning Prevention Task Force. I started Keys2Swim because we have a high drowning rate in the Keys.

The program is free and the trainers volunteer their time. Right now I am working on an educational pamphlet about water safety and drowning prevention to be delivered to the pediatricians’ offices in all the keys. For more details, visit keys2swim.com.

BRIEFLY United Way stuffs the bus The United Way of the Florida Keys has said it raised $17,000 during the 2019 Stuff the Bus campaign to provide school supplies to Keys kids. The Publix Supermarkets “Tools for Back to School” initiative raised an additional $26,260 with donations given at the register. United Way and Publix employees distributed the $43,000 worth of goods to all 16 schools in Monroe County School District.
