E

ighteen years have passed from the day that changed the lives of many. On Sept. 11, 2001, two hijacked passenger planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. Another hijacked jet struck the Pentagon in Virginia, while a fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Community members gathered at Station 20 in Islamorada on the morning of Sept. 11, 2019 to commemorate the thousands who perished in the attacks and the many first responders who’ve contracted cancer, and, in many cases, are dying from their responses to the crash sites.

“Every person who has perished had a family and was somebody’s child, parent, spouse, sibling, family member or friend,” said Glenn Taylor, lieutenant with Islamorada Fire Rescue. “Take a moment and reflect on that, as this day means way more to some than it does to most of us.”

During the ceremony, a special artifact given to fire rescue by firefighter Patrick Cotton, of Tower Ladder 7 who responded to the attacks in New York City on 9/11, was unveiled. Following the tragic event, Cotton’s duties included recovering, cataloging and returning items like plane parts to the proper agency. In mid-December following the attacks, Cotton came across a piece from American Airlines Flight 11 while searching the footprint of the North Tower. Though he was prepared to return the piece, the Federal Aviation Administration was no longer collecting parts.

Cotton ended up donating the piece to Islamorada Fire Rescue, and it’s now part of a wooden display created by local artist Doug Barry. In a letter, Cotton said he donated the piece to the fire rescue to honor the brave men and women who risked their lives during Hurricane Irma and every day.

“I would like to transform this symbol of terror into a message of hope and inspiration to all who serve,” he wrote.

Cotton said he never displayed or showed the piece off upon finding it.

Instead, he’d take it out on Sept. 10 to reflect on how normal and peaceful the world was on that day.

“It gave me strength to face the next day at my firehouse E-16, TL-7 on 29th Street in Manhattan where I lost nine of my brothers,” he wrote. “Every year, we go there to stand with families of my brave friends and honor their memories.”

ears were shed in Freeport on Sept. 7 as Rotarians from South Florida and the Bahamas offloaded shipping containers with 53 tons of supplies for Bahamians affected by Hurricane Dorian.

Thanks to donations collected from the community by Rotary clubs in South Florida and the Keys, four shipping containers, each holding 20 pallets, were sent over to the Bahamas via businessman and philanthropist Carl Allen’s 183-foot yacht.

Among the Rotarians accompanying the shipping containers were Don Horton and Carla Bahn, of the Upper Keys club.

Of the four containers shipped over, two were packed full of supplies collected in the Keys, according to Horton. With the first trip complete, Horton says they’re probably going to make another one soon.

“Right now in the warehouse in Fort Lauderdale, and what we got down here, we can almost fill up four more containers already,” Horton said. “(Allen’s) got a fleet captain who told us that we don’t have to stop … ‘just keep going,’ he said.”

Horton says they were humbled upon arriving in the Bahamas in the aftermath of Dorian.

Walking through town, Horton says he noticed no electric trucks driving around, no phone trucks in sight and no government officials running around.

“I was standing next to a warehouse … I would guess I was probably at a 5- to 6-foot elevation above sea level judging where we left the port,” he said. “I was standing next to this warehouse and loading dock, which came up about 5 feet. Inside that

building was about 3 feet of water. In a mile from the shore, the port, there was at least 13 feet of water. I was told it reached 15 feet in that area. You can imagine any home — they were all ground-level homes in that area — every home had been inundated with water. That’s in Grand Bahama and Freeport. They’re so much further west from Abaco and Hope Town.”

Despite having no running water, Horton said, the Rotary’s water plant in Freeport is keeping up with the locals’ needs. In Marsh Harbor alone, Horton says there’s enough food for people to last a year.

“There’s a lot of things they’ll be able to use, but I’m sure there’s things they have to have now,” he said. “When I say they have nothing, they absolutely have nothing.”

During the offloading, Horton and Bahn met a Bahamas Rotarian by the name of Billy, whose home was filled with debris inside and windows blown out from the storm. But despite all of that, Bahn said, she was there all of Saturday and Sunday helping offload.

“You would never know she has nothing,” Bahn said. “She said she has to help everybody.”

Monetary donations are still being collected through the Upper Keys Rotary Club, keysrotary.club, and the Robbins Fund of Rotary District 6990, rotary6990.org, which covers South Florida. Both websites have a donation button.

veryday residents can harness their pedaling (and fundraising) powers to help the ReMARCable citizens of the Florida Keys this month. On Saturday, Sept. 21, cyclists will depart Key Largo and cycle 100 miles to Key West in order to raise funds for MARC (Monroe Association for Remarkable Citizens), a nonprofit serving adults with developmental disabilities.

Organizers are quick to point out that the ride is not a race, but rather a fund-raising trek and destination ride through some of the most gorgeous scenery in the U.S. The ride departs from the Holiday Inn Key Largo at 7:15 a.m. and takes participants over 42 bridges and past endless ocean vistas.

Flanked by the Atlantic and the Gulf, riders will zip down the highway past 100 miles of Keys history.

Anyone who’s visited their garden center or annual pumpkin patch can attest that MARC is indeed succeeding in setting a space for remarkable citizens throughout the county.

“People forget that MARC operates beyond Key West and this ride really shows off the fact that MARC is county-wide,” said Rebecca Balcer, ride director for the ReMARCable Tour de Keys.

Riders can choose to undertake the entire 100 miles as a solo venture, or can form teams, splitting the ride as a relay. Riders are asked to raise a minimum of $100, in addition to paying their entry fee. On the day of the race, stops are planned approximately every 10 miles to allow riders a safe space to pull over and refuel.

Balcer is thankful to have so many businesses and organizations throughout the Keys step up to help. “There are no administrative costs for this ride. Everything we make goes back to the organization 100%,” said Balcer.

t was Aug. 29, 1960 when a French airliner attempting to land at Dakar, Senegal crashed in a thunderstorm, killing all 63 people on board.

They would not be the last deaths associated with the developing storm. The following day, the tropical disturbance was recorded near the Cape Verde Islands.

The disturbance would develop into Hurricane Donna, a killer storm that reached Category 5 status for a brief period. Donna would devastate Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Florida and the eastern seaboard.

When Donna struck the Florida Keys, the Category 4 storm had been responsible for hundreds of lives. The 21-mile-wide eye of the hurricane crossed the Middle Keys on Sept. 10 at 2:30 a.m. Wind gusts of 155 mph were recorded at Lignumvitae Key. Reportedly, half of the people living between Marathon and Key Largo left the Keys seeking shelter in Homestead and Miami. In the Keys, four lives were lost due to the storm — two in Key Largo, one in Islamorada and one in Marathon. In the end, Hurricane Donna would be responsible for more than 320 deaths.

The Key Largo library is teaming up with the Florida Keys Arts Council to host a council members’ art show in their community room. It will be a show of art that is 16 by 20 inches and smaller. Lionfish derby set for Sept. 13-15 The 10th annual Upper Keys Lionfish Derby and Festival, set for Sept. 13-15, brings divers near and far in a lionfish hunt as they vie for prize money. A mandatory team captains’ meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. Its focus is on lionfish ecology, best collecting tools, safe handling and techniques and permits and regulations. All team members are encouraged to attend.

Derby participants can hunt from sunrise to sunset Saturday, Sept. 14,

and sunrise to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept 15, collecting lionfish by netting or spearing while on SCUBA, snorkeling or free diving, following all federal and state fishing regulations.

All fish are to be turned in to the scoring station by 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Tiki Bar at Postcard Inn Resort and Marina, MM 84, oceanside. Games, crafts, raffle prizes, team scoring, live music and other activities are open to the public from 12-4 p.m.

ccording to The Turtle Hospital’s Bette Zirkelbach, “Splinter,” the 150-pound sea turtle found shot with a spear off Key Largo this past weekend, is in guarded condition.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” she said.

The story has garnered plenty of local and national attention and many are wondering what type of fiend would hurt such a docile creature. Finding and prosecuting the person responsible is paramount, Zirkelbach said.

Despite a hefty reward of $5,000 being offered, as of Sept. 11, the hospital had yet to receive any tips through a special hotline (see more information below). But the Turtle Hospital was able to pass some important clues to the Keys Weekly, in hopes of catching the perpetrator.

One, the spearing happened at least a month ago, maybe two.

“We can tell by the necrotic tissue,” she said.

Two, the three-foot spear is homemade, not something that can be bought off the shelf.

Third, it’s most likely to have happened in the waters off Miami or the Upper Keys, as Zirkelbach doesn’t think the animal could have traveled far.

“As much as everyone wants to believe that this could never happen in the U.S., I think we have to consider it,” she said.

A boater discovered the green sea turtle, shot with a spear and entangled in trapline, on Carysfort Reef off of Key Largo on Sept. 7. The reptile was taken to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, where veterinarian Dr. Doug Mader did an endoscope and performed emergency surgery to remove the spear.

This makes the second sea turtle found impaled with a spear this summer. The first was a dead sea turtle recovered in Biscayne National Park with a spear in its head in June.

All species of sea turtles in and around the United States are listed as threatened or endangered. They are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and Florida’s Marine Turtle Protection Act. Violations could bring civil to criminal charges with penalties including fines and prison time.

The Turtle Hospital’s chairman of the board, Richie Moretti, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) who speared the sea turtle rescued on Sept. 7. Zirklebach said she’s hopeful that the Fish and Wildlife Commission will also offer some tip money and help advertise the reward. Those with information should call 305-743-2552, and may remain anonymous.

Clubs and groups have already made at least one trip to the Bahamas with water and food and clothing, among a whole list of other items. Executive Director Ann Sandlin said the animal rescue in the Upper Keys took in five out of the 50 potcakes, mixed-breed dogs found on several Caribbean islands, that came to South Florida from the Bahamas on Sept. 9. “They were from the Humane Society in Nassau since they were trying to make room for animals coming other areas hit by the hurricane — Abaco and Marsh Harbor,” she said. Julie Powers, a Coral Shores junior cheerleader, was named “All-American Cheerleader” by the National Cheerleading Association this past summer. She won the Most-Spirited Award last year at her varsity cheerleading banquet. She started cheering as a 10-year-old at Key Largo School and has never stopped. This is her third season as a varsity cheerleader at Coral Shores.

She has also been a competitive cheerleader at On Your Toes Dance Studio and placed third nationally during their competitive event.

Julie has been very active in various Upper Keys Foundation community service initiatives and is also deeply involved with Surfers for Autism, a non-profit organization that works with autistic children throughout Florida teaching kids how to surf. Julie is the vice-president of CSHS’ Interact Club, a Rotary-sponsored service-based organization.

She is also a standout in the classroom, where she possesses a perfect 4.0 unweighted grade point average and a 4.37 weighted GPA. Coral Shores cheerleading sponsor Dominique Hickey said, “Julie is a very special young lady. I was most proud of her this summer when she decided to try out for the All-American Cheerleading Team and made it.

It took courage for her to get out there in front of the entire camp and she nailed it. Julie is a true pleasure to have on the team.”

Riley Oakley, a senior leader of the Coral Shores cross country team, is a three-sport athlete who turned in a personal best time of 22:04 in the Palmer Trinity Invitational meet Sept.

6. In addition to running cross country, Riley is a standout in soccer and is the Hurricane track team’s top middle-distance runner; he competes in the 400, 800, and mile.

Riley was very active last year in multiple community service projects organized by The Upper Keys Foundation and is currently involved in its “UKFHurricane Dorian Relief Mission.” Additionally he is active in the school’s Interact Club and Key Club.

“Riley Oakley is a senior leader of the cross country team,” said CSHS head cross country coach Gabe Suarez. “He sets a new standard of effort at every practice. He motivates others to do their best and always gives it 110%.”

Pat Meyers, associate head coach of cross country, added, “I’m really proud of the way Riley has stepped up his preparation.

He provides a great example for everyone on the team. It’s inspiring to watch his personal progress, in and out of sports.”

EXPLORING AND EDUCATING Crane creating happiness while saving the world

R

achel Crane lives a badass life that keeps her busy, challenged and fulfilled. The Port Largo resident can sometimes be found in the Keys teaching SCUBA diving courses or captaining boats for Coral Restoration Foundation.

Other times, she heads up training for Diveheart, a nonprofit helping adaptive divers experience the underwater world. And if you can’t find her around town, she’s probably leading National Geographic expeditions into southeast Alaska’s “Inside Passage” with Lindblad Expeditions.

“I tell everyone I do a lot! It’s actually very challenging because I can’t fit my title on LinkedIn. I don’t fit on a normal one-page resume,” said Crane.

In the same way that Crane doesn’t have a “typical” job, she also doesn’t have a typical day at any of her four jobs. If she’s working a boat, the captain can be on the water from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m — or even 8 p.m. If she’s at home or working remotely, she creates her own regimen: “I try to be at my computer by 9, but in PJs with my coffee and my kitty.”

When she’s on expedition, Crane’s day starts around 5 a.m. looking for wildlife — from humpback whales to seals to orcas. By 7:30 a.m., Crane and the rest of the expedition staff are finding out their day’s assignments. For Crane, that could range from leading nature hikes to shuttling guests on Zodiacs to giving a naturalist presentation to diving Alaska’s pristine waters.

“Basically no two days are the same — both here and there,” explains Crane. She loves the dynamic nature of her life because of the “mental stimulation” and the “nice balance” between getting out in the world and being cozy in her own home.

Keys Weekly caught up with Crane as she packed for her second Alaska expedition. “On expedition, I love getting up close and personal with everything,” said Crane. “We’re on these little Zodiacs next to whales. Just seeing everything you’ve ever watched on TV right next to you is amazing.”

In all her roles, Crane uses nonconfrontational ways of educating rather than casting blame to help people realize the impact their actions can have on the wild places she loves.

“We’re beyond talking about what did we do wrong; we need to go into ‘how do we fix this’ mode. I like to help people understand that and care!”

Where did you grow up? Upstate New York, on an alpaca farm.

When and why did you move to the Keys? 2013. I was working on coral disease ecology for Mote, but I found that while all that research is incredibly important, the people I was doing research for already knew the problems with the corals, so I didn’t feel like I was making enough of a difference talking about it. So I moved to the Keys to be a dive instructor at Rainbow Reef because I felt like I had more of a platform to make people care and see what’s going on. And that platform just got a lot bigger. It’s cool because I get to tell people where I live and what’s going on with our corals. And I tell them, all the way up in Alaska.

Did you always want to work with the ocean? What drew you in? No, I didn’t. I actually really wanted to be a vet. And I even studied a little bit of vet stuff, but I learned that I’m allergic to everything. So, then my second thing that I loved almost as much as all the animals was being in and around the water.

I grew up landlocked, so my experience was pools and lakes.

I decided, “The largest body of water is the ocean, so why not go there?”

What’s your go-to drink after a long day? Water. Or a mojito with lemonade.

What’s something people don’t know about you? I am, well I was, the grand champion at alpaca obstacle courses while holding an egg on a spoon and not dropping that. You have an alpaca go through a dog tunnel, but bigger — for an alpaca — over a jump, back up, all without dropping the egg.

And I did it the fastest.

What’s a ‘locals only’ secret about life in the Keys that you’re willing to share? Everyone’s favorite Key lime pie place is different. There is no one best Key lime pie. Mine is at Bayside because it tastes like cheesecake, and I love cheesecake.

When did you begin diving? Captaining? Diving, I think I was 17. Captaining - on my birthday in 2016. My golden birthday too! 25 on the 25th. Right after my last season in Alaska.

Where else have you lived? I was born in Washington state. From Washington we went to Tennessee, Alabama, upstate New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, Alaska.

What’s your idea of the perfect weekend? Anything where I get to hang out with Nate! Typically something somewhat relaxing. If it’s a weekend just for me, I like to relax because so much of my life is lived outside.

If you had the chance to take anyone to dinner, who would it be? Dr. Robert Paine. He did some of the original research that brought ecology into the mindset of keystone species and trophic cascade. His ideology spurred that entire movement that environments can be regulated from the top down, not just bottom up (available food source).

If you had a superpower, what would it be? Shape shifting. I wanna experience what all the animals experience. Because then I could fly, then I could be invisible; super strong; super fast; breathe underwater; communicate with the fish.

HEADS IN BEDS DACs decide on event funding

Last month, the Tourist Development Council’s district advisory councils in Key Largo and Islamorada approved turnkey and destination funding applications for 2020 events. Between DAC IV and V, $240,000 was approved for a number of events, from marathons and music festivals to a lionfish derby and a food and wine festival. Funding requests will go before the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners at its October meeting.

SWIM FOR ALLIGATOR LIGHTHOUSE The annual swim to Alligator Lighthouse received $30,000 from its original request of $40,000. The event sells out every year as participants swim to and from the iconic lighthouse for a total of 8 miles. The event happens Sept. 10-12, 2020. The 2019 event, happending Sept. 14, was capped at 490 swimmers.

UNCORKED — KEY LARGO & ISLAMORADA FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL The 11 days of glorious wine and tasting put on by the Key Largo Merchants Association received $20,000 from its original $30,000 ask. Set for Jan. 18, 2020, the Uncorked Food & Wine Festival brings cooking demos, live music, food and wine pairing classes, art and wine shows and more. The festival highlight is the grand tasting where restaurant and wine experts showcase samples of their finest fare and wines. The DAC V in Key Largo approved $20,000 in funds for the 2020 event.

KEY LARGO Eight applications came before DAC V last month with funds requests totaling $250,000. In the end, the committee granted funding to seven of the eight events for 2020.

JIMMY JOHNSON’S “QUEST FOR THE RING” CHAMPIONSHIP It’s a fishing week unlike any other with prize money in the millions. CI Management Group’s request for the 2020 fishing event received $20,000. The event is set for March 3-7, 2020. Events include the two-day billfish championship and celebrity Pro-Am championship.

KEY LARGO BRIDGE RUN The annual Key Largo Bridge Run, put on by HNO Productions and Henry Menendez, received $10,000. The race features a half marathon and a 4-mile walk/run over Jewfish Creek Bridge in Key Largo overlooking the beautiful Key Largo Bay. The 11th annual event is slated for Nov. 14, 2020. The 10th annual First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run Half Marathon & 4-Mile Run is set for Nov. 9.

KEY LARGO’S ORIGINAL MUSIC FEST With live bands entertaining at various Key Largo bars, the music fest received a total of $30,000. The event is slated for May 14-18, 2020 and it’s set to bring some knee-clapping and foot-tapping. Set for Dec. 15, 2020 to Jan. 1, 2021, swimmers flourish in a supportive tropical swim infrastructure where 80-degree air temperatures are the norm, but they will enjoy the other unique touristic features of Key Largo and the Florida Keys. PHIL PETERSON’S FLORIDA KEYS POKER RUN The 47th annual poker run put on by Phil Peterson Charities received DAC’s approval to obtain $10,000. The poker run begins on the mainland at Peterson’s Harley Davidson and ends in the lower Keys. And what started with 46 riders now has 10,000 riders participating. The 2020 poker run is set for Oct. 9-11. The 46th annual Poker Run happens Oct. 11-13, 2019, and it ends at Boondocks at MM 27.

NEW TOLL RATES Discounts available for local residents

A

new toll rate on Card Sound Road will be effective on Oct. 1, 2019. The toll adjustment is in accordance with the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.

The toll is completely electronic, using Toll-By-Plate or SunPass. No cash is accepted at the toll. The toll helps fund maintenance of the road and future repair and replacement of the five bridges along Card Sound Road.

Two discount programs are available for Monroe County residents with two-axle vehicles that use SunPass and have an account in good standing. The two programs are the monthly discount program,

which requires no enrollment, and the annual pass program.

Drivers do not need to sign up for the monthly discount program. Drivers will automatically receive a 40 percent rebate on their SunPass account after any calendar month in which 28 or more one-way trips are made through the toll.

The annual pass is for frequent users and allows for unlimited trips through the toll. The fee is $370 per year and runs from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. Additional information on how to obtain an annual pass will be released later this year.

A

big kickoff return set the tone right from the start for the young, energetic Coral Shores Hurricanes varsity football team. Stout defensive play, multiple turnovers and productivity on the offensive side of the ball led the Canes, to secure their first victory of the season at home against the Northwest Christian Eagles, 30-14, on Sept. 6.

With junior Zak Filpes returning the opening kickoff to the Eagles’ 35-yard line, it didn’t take long for the Canes to hit pay dirt with junior running back Lucas Dennis punching it in from 10 yards out on the opening drive.

Dennis finished the game just a yard shy of 100 yards.

The offense continued to click toward the end of the first quarter as sophomore quarterback Brian Lesko scampered in from 10 yards out to make the score, 14-0. With another run-in by Lesko in the second quarer, the Canes entered halftime up 21-6.

Turnovers was the story in the second and third quarters as the Canes came away with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The defense was led by the aggressive junior linebacker Abel Silva, senior outside linebacker Gage Denis, who collected an interception, junior defensive back Daniel Pease, who intercepted a pass, senior backer Erick Erickson, who collected a fumble, and senior defensive end Hunter Slate, who had a sack.

“It definitely gave us a little breathe of fresh air,” coach Alphonso Bryant told the Weekly following the victory. “We’ve been on that end for two whole weeks.

Just to get it on our side, it feels really remarkable. I’m so excited for our kids.”

The game was all but over following freshman running back Chris Cooper’s 15-yard touchdown run. Overall, Bryant said, he’s excited the team was able to come out and perform in front of packed bleachers.

“They’re happy and hopefully this kickstarts a lot of winning and success,” he said. “Offensively, we found a rhythm and we found some things I feel can work for us, but we just have to continue to get better. Defensively, we’re in positions. We just have to continue to learn how to tackle. Other than that, I think we’re great. Special teams, we just got to get a little better in some areas.”

Bryant also expressed his praise for the quarterback duo of Lesko and freshman Joel Sacerio.

“They did a very good job of managing the game tonight and I’m very proud of them,” he said.

Up next for the Canes (1-2) are the Westminster Christian Warriors, (1-2) on Friday, Sept.

13 at 7 p.m. at Coral Shores.

Coaching the Warriors is Ed Holly, former Canes coach. Bryant, who coached under Holly for a number of years, said Holly will have his team ready to go.

“He knows me and I know him. It’s going to be a very good opportunity and a great match, and I’m looking forward to it,” Bryant said.

Freshman wins 200 IM in double dual meet The Canes swim team traveled to Westminster Christian on Sept. 5 for a double dual meet against Westminster Christian and Carrolton. Highlights included freshman Corley Smith taking the 200 IM with a time of 2:27.30; sophomore Ariel Galvan, senior Luke Gutierrez and sophomore Vincent Biondoletti going first, second and third in the 50 freestyle; the girls’ 200 Free Relays going first and second, with times of 1:50.43 and 2:00.35 respectively, and sophomore Andrea Lopez winning the 100 back with a time of 1:07.79.

“This meet gave us more clarity as to where our strengths and weaknesses are,” said coach Kelly Kater. ”Most importantly, I think it helped our kids realize what it means to race until you hit the wall. While we fell to Carrolton, individual race wins boosted the confidence of the team and made the kids more focused heading into practice.”

Top girl runners were captain Isabella Bolivar (26:09), Caroline Althouse (32:16) and Ally Cooper (32:27). For the boys, the team was led by Riley Oakley (22:05), Zane Turbessi (22:50) and Willem Godtel (23:19). “It was a really hot day and a tough course, but I think the team did well,” said coach Gabe Suarez.

“A lot of the new runners really impressed me today.” The cross country team’s next scheduled contest is the Larry Wooten Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park in Miami at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26.

RUSSELL COTTAGE GETS HISTORICAL DESIGNATION

A

post-1935 Labor Day Hurricane, early Keys wood-frame home located at Green Turtle Hammock Nature Preserve received Islamorada Village Council’s approval to be designated as a local historic landmark. Known as “Russell Cottage,” the structure originally was located behind the present-day post office. The building was constructed for John A. and Clifton Russell, who operated a post office and grocery store out of a building on Upper Matecumeb’s De Leon Avenue.

After the category 5 Labor Day hurricane destroyed all of Islamorada, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, in partnership with the Red Cross, came to the area to construct the more familiar Red Cross Houses for members who lost their homes. In addition to 28 concrete structures built, two wood homes were built, including the Russell Cottage.

The Russell Cottage is an example of the Florida Cracker Vernacular style architecture typified by a wood-frame house. It was widespread in the 19th century and is still a popular design theme for developers. The cottage, located at MM 81, bayside, is constructed out of Dade County pine.

Deadline nears for women’s scholarship The deadline to apply for an Adult Women Scholarship from the Upper Keys Business and Professional Women (BPW) is Sunday, Sept. 15.

Individual scholarships of up to $1,500 will be awarded and may be used for certifications, training classes, or classes and required materials for higher educational degrees. Applicants need not be members of Upper Keys BPW but must be residents of the Florida Keys for at least three years.

Oxitec reveals new technology up for EPA consideration

n 2018, Oxitec’s proposal to test the release of biologically modified mosquitoes to combat biting invasive populations was bandied back and forth between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration. The proposal drew much comment, plus there was a presidential election, and new department heads were appointed. In the midst of all that turmoil, Oxitec — a U.S.-owned, U.K.-based company that develops biologically engineered solutions to control disease-transmitting insects — withdrew its application.

Not because it thinks it doesn’t have promise, but because Oxitec says it has something better to offer.

The EPA’s public comment on its 2nd Generation trial opened on the federal register on Sept. 11. (Visit federalregister.gov and search for Oxitec.)

“The 2nd Generation mosquito is just as environmentally friendly and safe, but with the potential for greater performance and overall cost effectiveness,” said Kelly Matzen, who heads research and development for Oxitec.

Here are the key points.

• Only males The eggs of the 2nd Generation mosquito produce ONLY males. Male mosquitoes don’t bite and are therefore incapable of spreading diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. According to Oxitec, its Aedes aegypti carry a self-limiting gene that prevents female offspring from surviving, allowing for male-only production. The previous proposed method required adult mosquitoes to be carefully sorted by gender.

• Eggs, not adults Instead of raising modified mosquitoes to adulthood before releasing them into the wild, the 2nd Generation mosquitoes can be distributed as eggs in boxes. (The eggs are currently produced in the U.K. and shipped globally to places such as Brazil where a trial is underway.) A box containing eggs could be placed in a back yard and filled with water, after which the males hatch and start to grow. When the mosquitoes emerge, they fly away into the neighborhood to find female mosquitoes to mate with. The previous proposed method required adult mosquitoes to be raised near the test site and then released via the use of a specially equipped van.

With the 2nd Generation, it just targets the females. Male progeny survive, also carrying the self-limiting gene to half its offspring that are male only … and so on. The 2nd Generation technology allows Oxitec to reduce the number of times the egg box must be refilled, reduces the total population, and Oxitec says, when releases stop, the 2nd Generation mosquito dies out in the wild after a few generations.

• Tetracycline And, finally, Oxitec said the 2nd Generation mosquitoes it plans to release do not come into contact with tetracycline at any stage, either as eggs or as adults.

The 2nd Generation mosquito has many advantages, said Kevin Gorman, who heads Oxitec’s field operations.

“It’s easier to use and a way to get the tools to fight Aedes aegypti into the hands of many,” he said.

Phil Goodman is the chairman of the board of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. He said the 2nd Generation technology overcomes many hurdles its predecessor didn’t, including, potentially, the cost.

“The EPA doesn’t allow any talk of commercialization during the comment period,” Goodman said, “so we don’t have any projections. But if we can shorten the route to production and make it simpler, that has to have an impact on the cost down the road. I mean, if Oxitec ships eggs instead of adult mosquitoes … well, they could probably fit one million genetically modified mosquitoes in something the size of a shoebox.

This could make distribution a lot more effective.”

The EPA has announced a 30-day public comment period, during which residents in the Florida Keys and elsewhere can share their views on the project with the EPA. Should approval be granted, locations for the trials in the Keys would be a joint decision between Oxitec and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. This is of particular relevance since the Key Haven neighborhood rejected a genetically modified mosquito release in its neighborhood in a non-binding referendum question in the 2016 general election. Precinct 11 voted 65% against the study. But in a second referendum question, for the entire county, 31 of 33 precincts approved an “effectiveness trial in Monroe County” of genetically modified mosquitoes. In Ocean Reef, 84% of voters approved of a test and in Grassy Key, 72% of voters approved of a test.

Oxitec’s 1st Generation mosquito proposal met with public resistance in the Keys. Dr. John W. Norris of Key West has opposed the technology, citing the possible creation of an antibiotic-resistant scenario that could pose a health threat to humans. Proponents of the technology welcome a way to fight vector diseases (transmitted through the bite of infected insects) such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever and chikungunya.

Local veterinarian Dr. Doug Mader said he supported the 1st Generation technology 100%, as it would have reduced the number of canine heartworm infections — he said he sees four or five a month in the Keys — also a mosquito-borne disease.

Oxitec reports it has positive regulatory findings from independent scientific reviews and regulators from around the world. Their mosquitoes have been determined by multiple regulatory agencies, including the U.S. FDA and Brazil’s CTNBio, to be safe, and to pose no threat to humans, animals or the environment.

Clubs mobilized swiftly following Hurricane Dorian’s landfall in the Bahamas. Rotary clubs were stationed outside Publix Key Largo and Winn Dixie in Tavernier collecting items. The Florida Keys Masonic Lodge also used its location as a drop-off spot. They, too, shipped over items to the lodge in the Bahamas. Bars, restaurants and dive shops were also raising funds to support fellow islanders.

n North Key Largo and looking for a spot to relax and enjoy a meal? Buzz on over to the waterside restaurant at MM 106.5, oceanside, for local seafood, prime steaks and some crafty cocktails.

The waterfront hideaway, known as The Buzzards Roost Restaurant, is nestled on the property of Garden Cove Marina in North Key Largo. Named after the natural bay and waterway that fronts the ocean, the garden area was named for the fresh citrus that could be grown on the fertile land. Farmers back in the day would row out to the reef and wait for sailing ships to come by so they could sell their citrus to the crew.

Seminole Indians shared this fertile, high property with the farmers. The Indians’ language translated higher ground to “wachula,” which translates to Buzzard’s Roost.

With dining inside and out by the canal, stop in for lunch, dinner, a Sunday brunch or some cocktails. The Weekly recently stopped in for lunch, and it surely didn’t disappoint.

If you’re wanting some meaty chicken wings, then you’re going to want to try out the Buzzard wings found under the appetizers from the land menu.

These jumbo wings are cooked to perfection with choices of sauce including chipotle, teriyaki and mild, medium or hot. With creamy blue cheese and ample celery, it’s the right choice if you’re with a group of hungry appetites. There’s also the loaded potato skins, spinach artichoke dip and the giant mound onion, which is thinly sliced Spanish onions tossed in seasoned flour and fried crisp and served with horseradish sauce.

If craving a seafood plate, try the peel-n-eat shrimp, fresh Florida oysters or corny blue crab cakes, which are rich blue crabmeat with diced vegetables and roasted corn, topped with chopped tomatoes and served with New Orleans-style remoulade sauce.

At The Buzzards Roost, some of the plates worth trying include the fish tacos, ceviche and the lobster reuben, prepared with sauerkraut, thousand island dressing and Swiss cheese on rye bread. If craving some fresh catch of the day like yellowtail or hogfish, get it “Bert Style,” which has filets sautéed in lemon butter with tomatoes, scallions and shaved parmesan cheese. It’s every bit of tasty and satisfying.

Other notable menu items include the crunchy mahi or the blackened chicken wrap, fresh catch of the day sandwiches like Buzzard’s favorite, which is served on grilled rye with sautéed mushrooms, onions, jack and cheddar cheese, and salads such as the Garden Cove Cobb.

scallops, shrimp and sautéed in a garlic, white wine sauce over linguini pasta. There’s also black angus steaks like filet mignon, New York strip steak and ribeye.

Cocktails served up at Buzzards are crafty. For instance, try the colorful and refreshing “Smashed Buzzard” made with light rum and coconut rum shaken with tropical fruit juices, pina colada and blue curacao on the rocks. Draft, domestic and import beers are available as well as a selection of wines.

The Buzzards Roost is one of the first and last stops in the Keys, so look for that buzzard sign while in North Key Largo. Or, come by boat to Hawk Channel for some seafood, drinks and relaxation.

OUTLAW THE STRAW?

Council discussion follows action in Key West

C

urious to know the impact plastic pollution plays in the environment? Just watch WLRN’s “Troubled Waters: A Turtle’s Tale,” or the 2016 documentary “A Plastic Ocean,” which Islamorada residents had the opportunity to view back in April at Founders Park.

In addition to the documentaries, plenty of reports are popping up regarding whales washing ashore on beaches. A report by National Geographic in March tells the story of a young emaciated-looking whale in the Davao Gulf in the Philippines, which died with more than 88 pounds of plastic stashed into its belly.

“Plastic was just bursting out of its stomach,” said marine mammal expert Darrell Blatchley to National Geographic. And it’s not just whales.

Dolphins, birds and fish are also consuming minuscule plastic particles that were once straws, sandwich baggies and shopping bags, to name a few.

Here in the Keys, a number of hotels, restaurants and charter boats have cut plastic out of their operation. And while alternatives may cost them a little more, local owners are cognizant of the implications involved with plastic. And they’re taking initiative as a result.

Last month, Key West City Commission approved an ordinance banning the use and distribution of plastic straws and stirrers.

The ordinance was seen as necessary for the preservation of the city’s environment and the public welfare of residents and visitors and future generations. During an Islamorada Village Council meeting in late August, talks over banning straws came to the forefront with Vice Mayor Mike Forster

bringing it forward. With Key West implementing a ban, Forster said, the village should follow suit.

“I went to WLRN’s documentary and I came out very sad, but hopeful that any little difference we make is a difference in the right direction,” he said.

“Do I think straws are the silver bullet that’s going to make everything great? I don’t. If you have the opportunity to start somewhere, then why not take advantage of that low-hanging fruit?”

Forster and fellow council members were in attendance for the League of Cities convention a few months ago. There, Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed attendees, and part of his talk focused on plastic straws. DeSantis acknowledged that he wouldn’t preempt or veto such an ordinance, if a local government chose to outlaw straws.

The owner of Mangrove Mike’s, Forster says he raised prices 20 cents per item to cover costs to go eco-friendly.

“It’s not a major burden that everybody puts it to be,” he said.

Capt. Matt Bellinger said he used to buy a case of water in plastic bottles for $2.99. Now, he’s purchasing a case of aluminum can water for $8.

“We don’t let plastic on our boats now,” he said.

“You can’t get on my boat with a sandwich in a plastic bag.”

But questions loom over the practicality of such ordinances — specifically the enforcement and the fact that not everyone will be caught and fined.

Councilman Jim Mooney says he’s all for an ordinance and described it as “feel-good.” However, he said, it’s not practical.

“If you can’t enforce it, then why don’t you just do more education?” he said. “We’re not going to change people’s habits. If you put rules on the books and can’t enforce them, what good are they?”

Councilman Ken Davis said people started changing voluntarily when discussion was last heard over such an ordinance to ban plastic. Davis said the village should provide some outreach to businesses.

“If we give that a good hard push and that doesn’t work, I’ll jump on this with you (Forster) with both feet,” Davis said. “Key West passed their ordinance because they’re Key West. I think we can push it from the village and we can get this done. I agree, Key West needed to pass an ordinance, but I don’t think Islamorada does.”

Mayor Deb Gillis said such an ordinance could be the first of several. She said she’d like to have a discussion about toxic sunscreens.

“I think it’s a combination of things,” she said.

“We need to reduce the amount of plastics in the water, but it’s also the health of the water, the health of the turtles and the whales that ingest this stuff.

It’s a new world and we need to do as much as we can within reason.”

Citizen science collaboration tackles python problem

EEF and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission joined forces for a little citizen science session recently. It began at REEF headquarters as community members learned how to identify and deal with invasive species, which pose a real threat to biodiversity and native species that cannot compete.

The most common reptiles that cause harm in the local environments include invasive lizards (tegus, monitors and iguanas) and snakes like pythons.

Those at the workshop also received FWC training on how to catch Burmese pythons with snake hooks and snake bags. Using nine snakes captured from near the Everglades, the hands-on workshop included proper handling technique and grip, safety precautions against bites and escape, and when to call for agency help. Attendees went home with two personal snake bags to encourage them to join patrols.

Healing therapy begins at Key Largo Yoga TIFFANY DUONG

atharine Wheatley, better known as “Kat” to her students at Key Largo Yoga, treated the community to a free sound bowl healing session recently. The yogi, a 20-year Key Largo resident who’s originally from North Carolina, recently completed her sound healer certification in Wilton Manor in Broward County and wanted to share her newfound knowledge with her yoga tribe back in the Keys.

So how does sound bowl healing work, exactly? Those wanting to experience the healing flocked to the yoga studio in Key Largo to find out.

Wheatley, who trained at Meditate School of Mindfulness, had arranged her seven crystal sound bowls and four Himalayan brass bowls in an arc around a cushion.

Everyone else fanned out from her in concentric circles of yoga mats and relaxing bodies. Wheatley asked everyone to get comfortable as they’d be sitting still for about 45 minutes. Most chose to lie in a traditional yoga savasana position on yoga mats. Some propped themselves against the walls and mirrors in the intimate studio.

“I invite you to suspend your expectations tonight and let whatever is going to develop organically, develop,” Wheatley began.

She described how anything that moves will vibrate or make a noise. “Each of our 30,000 cells is vibrating. Isn’t that amazing?” She smiled as her students begin to close their eyes and settle into the sounds.

Wheatley has a master’s degree in psychology and worked for a number of

years as a counselor before pursuing a variety of other delightful adventures, first as a dive shop manager and then as a scuba instructor. She also has background in classical ballet. While she’s been practicing yoga sporadically for most of her adult life, she did not establish a regular practice until about 10 years ago. She became certified to teach yoga in 2013 and soon after joined the team at Key Largo Yoga.

“Along the way, I've grown increasingly interested in the art of healing — I think the search for health is what brings most of us to yoga — and so I have also pursued trainings and certifications in aromatherapy, restorative yoga, reiki and sound healing,” she said. “I wish to be a healer in that I desire to create a space within which others can tap into their own inner healing energy potential.”

monic when we’re calm. And when we're in dissonance, our cells vibrate in a more asynchronous way.” She struck and traced the edges of each bowl so her class could hear it “sing” and grow accustomed to the different tones.

Wheatley offered the sounds and vibrations as a guiding meditation.

“The practitioner holds space for those for whom he/she is playing bowls for, to allow them to create their own healing energy,” she said. “The bowls don’t heal people, they just create a space for people to heal themselves. I really love that modality.”

Doug Pierce, of Key Largo, shared his experience following the sound session. “I needed some sound healing today. I’ve had some dissonance in my life the past few days,” he said. “I feel better.”

Wheatley shared her altruistic motives for bringing the healing practice to her yoga studio. “If a cell is touched by another cell harmonizing

with a bowl, the first cell will harmonize with it too,” she explained. This movement of sound waves and healing captivated Wheatley.

“Here’s the cool thing: if you go to a sound healing and you leave here vibrating harmoniously as one cell, you leave in an elevated state,” says Wheatley. “Then, if you touch someone else and elevate them, they will, in turn, lift someone else up too. The healing and harmonizing spreads.”

The next free sound healing event is slated for Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at Key Largo Yoga. Wheatley said there will be more future events that are either free or reasonably priced as she continues to weave the experience into other aspects of the yoga practice. Reservations are required for the free events. After Sept. 27, Wheatley will offer private sound healing lessons by appointment. More information is at 305-240-1315.
