ONE HARBOR, ONE LEASE MARATHON’S MOORING STAYS ARE NOW UNIFORM

T

his is one of those tiny tweaks to state law that takes forever but, ultimately, makes life better for Marathon’s residents living on the hook.

“It seems like such a little thing, but it’s a big undertaking,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

Of the 226 locally managed mooring balls in Boot Key Harbor, 160 are over state-owned bay bottom.

Before the rule change, boats could stay on the ball for only 6 months, while there’s no limit to how long a liveaboard can stay on a ball over city-owned bay bottom. The ensuing shuffle was time-consuming.

“It was a lot of work,” said City Marina Manager Sean Cannon. “For example, I have a lot of boaters who come here for the worst of the hurricane season, or nine months. I had to move them after six months, even though they were only going to stay a little longer.” Now, boaters can stay on the mooring ball over state-owned bottom for up to one year.

Lindsey said the city pursued several avenues to accomplish the task, but eventually the language was added to an “omnibus” rule package released in July 2018, approved by the state Cabinet in December 2018, and codified into law in March 2019.

Carol Bracy of Ballard Partners, the city’s representative in Tallahassee, was instrumental in walking the change through the halls of the state Capitol.

She said this allows the state Department of Environmental Protection to authorize the longer one-year lease.

The option is available to other Florida communities, so long as they meet specific environmental standards.

“I visited Boot Key Harbor the last time I was in Marathon,” Bracy said. “It certainly is a gem of a public harbor.”

SENMARTIN TALKS SPLASH PARK Marathon City Councilman Mark Senmartin told the Weekly he has added an item about a city splash park to the agenda of the Tuesday, Aug. 12 meeting at 5:30 p.m. at city hall. He said he hopes the public will attend and offer input.

“The most important thing that I want to emphasize is that there will be minimal taxpayer dollars involved,” he said. His tentative plan calls for using $225,000 in city funds “designated to benefit children” donated by two developers, and about $200,000 from the proposed sale of a waterfront lot the city foreclosed on due to code violations. “If we start planning now, the project would be eligible for funding through two or three TDC cycles, as well,” he said, adding several citizens also propose to raise donations.

Senmartin estimates the splash park might cost $1 million and is most likely suitable for the Rotary Park he said is dated and in disrepair. “It’s a good opportunity to re-do that footprint,” he said.

BUY-OUT DISCUSSION Also on the agenda for Tuesday, Aug. 13 is a discussion of the Volunteer Home Buyout Program, part of the Rebuild Florida program funded by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The city has up to $5 million to offer homeowners of Hurricane Irma-damaged properties (or homes with repetitive storm damage) in low-income neighborhoods. If the buyer accepts the offer, reportedly at pre-Irma valuations, then the house will be knocked down and the land used for conservation, recreation or stormwater projects. FIVE FOR THREE Former City of Marathon fire marshal Adam Geaneas has filed to run for the Marathon City Council election in November of this year. At presstime, he had yet to respond to the Weekly’s request for an interview.

Incumbents Mayor John Bartus and councilman Dan Zieg have also filed for re-election while councilman Steve Cook has said he will not seek another term. Newcomers Eugene Gilson and John Kissick have also filed.

The five men will campaign for three seats, decided by the highest number of votes in the at-large election. So far, only two of the candidates have a war chest — Gilson has raised $300 and Zieg has raised $9,250.

ou know that Dos Equis commercial that features the Most Interesting Man in the World? Well, if they switched the campaign to feature a woman, it would have the face of Hanna Rempala. She’s the woman behind the cosmetic counter at the Walgreens store on 109th street. Yes, her.

She’s outgoing and friendly. More importantly, she’s a very good saleswoman.

(Editor’s note: I’m often astounded to find myself leaving with things I never intended to buy. The kicker, though, is she’s so good at it, there’s never any buyer’s remorse.)

Rempala has a fascinating background currently capped by a seven-year residency in the Keys. But … who knows? She might be off to her next adventure soon!

How many languages do you speak? I’m fluent in three, reading and writing: Polish, English and Russian. And I studied Latin for 12 years, and German. And I can figure out Spanish because of my knowledge of Latin.

(That’s six languages!)

Where are you from? I’m Polish by birth. In 1981, I just finished my degree in law when I took a vacation (a graduation present) to the U.S. and then the Solidarity strike and revolution happened and there were no flights home. I was forced to stay. So I applied for my documentation but didn’t become a U.S. citizen until after 9/11. That really touched me personally.

Why not become a U.S. lawyer? The law is totally different. In the U.S., it’s casebased. In communist countries it is black and white, based on 130 articles of criminal law. My knowledge was completely useless.

Plus, becoming a lawyer wasn’t really my idea. My grandfather’s brother had a practice and no children to inherit it. My family decided I would study law with not a lot of concern of what I had to say.

How long have you been with Walgreens? Thirty-seven years. I love my job because it consists mainly of socializing and I love talking to women. I meet people from different ethnic and economic backgrounds. In the Keys, I sell a lot of sunscreen!

What is the secret to selling cosmetics?

The secret is that if a woman looks in the mirror, and she likes what she sees … well, then, she is beautiful. It doesn’t matter if her look is fashionable or expensive. I try to figure out quickly what my customer would like to see in the mirror. If she feels good … well, that’s what the world of cosmetics is for.

What are your three go-to cosmetics?

Mascara, foundation, and any hair coloring that is NOT blonde. My mother’s hair is dark, almost black, and beautiful. My natural color is like dishwater!

What’s your favorite brand? Right now Walgreens sells No7 and I do like their products. I also like L’Oreal and Revlon. But this is a very competitive business and there is always something new, so it’s always worth trying. For skin care, I also like No7, but also La Roche-Posay, a line of clinical skin care from France.

Were you a very feminine little girl? Oh, no.

In a five-block radius I was the only girl. I played in the street with the boys and sometimes they would use my braids to tie me to the tree!

What did you think you were going to be when you grew up? I wanted to teach geography to children. I still love to travel. Give me the word and I will be packed in 15 minutes.

Do you have any hobbies? I have two: photography and gardening. I’ve traveled to Port Aransas in Texas and I go to the Everglades every year to photograph birds. I am rebuilding my container garden after Hurricane Irma.

What’s something you do every day? I water my plants.

What is your guilty pleasure? A double shot of brandy. Or, if I’m being really, really bad …

What’s something most people don’t know about you? I collect antique guns. I am very anti-war but there is art in anything, even in weapons.

What are you reading right now? “Kaputt” by Curzio Malaparte. I’ve read it before, in Polish, but I wondered if that was censored because it’s about Mussolini. I haven’t gotten to the drastic parts yet.

What job would you be terrible at? I would be a terrible judge. I can’t pass sentence because there are so many variations to life.

What do you love about the Keys? How close and caring the people are who live here. That’s not something I ever saw in a big city and it’s valuable.

If you were dictator of a small island nation, what crazy dictator stuff would you do? Only one hour of television a day so people would interact. And no cell phones.

If you could have lunch with any person, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you eat? Queen Victoria and Indian food.

Do you have children? Yes, a son. John is at Ohio State University getting his Ph.D. in cancer research, studying lung cancer in children. I am very proud.

TWO EMPLOYEES IN THE OFFICE TO RUN FOR TAX COLLECTOR

I

n late June, Monroe County Tax Collector Danise “Dee Dee” Henriquez threw her name into the race for the District 1 seat on the Board of County Commissioners. With Henriquez moving on, two of her employees are stepping forward in hopes to lead the office.

SAM STEELE (R) The last five weeks have arguably been one of the busiest Sam Steele times for Key West resident and County Tax Manager Sam Steele. A Florida State University graduate who was first introduced to the Keys by his wife 10 years ago, Steele announced his candidacy in late June following Henriquez’s announcement. Steele and his wife, Lauren, a sixth-generation Florida Keys resident, have a son, Carter, who will turn 2 in November, and a baby on the way.

With his official kickoff party set for Thursday, Aug. 15 at Southernmost VFW Post 3911, Steele said it’s another exciting step in the long road ahead. Recently, he’s been traveling up and down the Keys meeting with voters.

“I’ve been getting some suggestions and ideas about how we can make improvements to the office,” Steele said during a recent Weekly interview. “I want to continue to get out there and meet voters and let them get to know me as a person.”

As tax manager, Steele is in direct communication with the tax collector and works

closely with departments to assist in daily operations.

Before becoming a county employee, Steele was a commercial real estate appraiser for Cushman & Wakefield, one of the largest real estate firms in the world. As an appraiser, he forecasted income and expense statements and projected 10-year cash flows for multimillion-dollar properties daily.

From running the mailroom to balancing the $300 million annual property tax roll, Steele said he holds the knowledge needed to run the tax collector’s office. Steele’s served in the office for two years. Running the office was something he wanted to do from the first day he entered.

“I told the tax collector, ‘One day I’m going to run this office,’” he said. “I’ve learned every inch of the office. I believe with my educational and professional experience, along with knowledge shadowing the tax collectors, it makes me the person to fill the big shoes.

Most importantly, my entire career is ahead of me.”

Steele said he will be a hands-on tax collector who’s able to work the front counter, validate Tourist Development Taxes and process hunting and fishing licenses, concealed weapon permits, among other tax and title work. As tax collector, Steele said he will look to integrate new technology to provide timely access to information and a professional level of service to the public.

Steele also believes in an open-door policy and encourages the public to approach him with any suggestions, questions or concerns.

AILEEN GALVAN (D) Aileen Galvan is the current director of operations at the Monroe County Tax Collectors Aileen Galvan Office. She is Key West-born and -raised, and has worked in the office since 1993.

“I oversee the real estate tax department, as well as oversee the preparation and mailing of tax bills,” Galvan said. “I’ve sat in every chair and can do every job in all of our offices.”

On Aug. 5, she was present for the grand opening of the new driver’s license office on North Roosevelt Boulevard at the Searstown Shopping Center in Key West.

“It went very smoothly and I think the public is pleased,” Galvan said.

“Customer service is a priority in our office.”

Galvan said her decision to run was prompted by her sincere desire to uphold the office’s high level of efficiency and service.

“This office is a well-run machine.

I’m passionate about our work and the people who work here,” she said, adding that friends and acquaintances encouraged her to run for office upon learning that Henriquez was set to step down.

If elected, Galvan said, she will continue to update the office’s technology to keep pace, and continue to provide the efficient and friendly rapport Monroe County taxpayers expect.

“Right now, I’m out and about meeting people, telling them why I’m running for office and what I can do,” she said. A campaign kick-off party is in the works and will be announced later.

VETERANS ID

In Monroe County, honorably discharged veterans have the option to have the veteran designation placed on their driver’s license or ID card.

“The veteran designation honors those who served to protect and defend our country and is a verification method used by many establishments offering veteran benefits, services, or discounts,” said Veterans Affairs Director Cathy Crane.

Veterans can have the designation placed on their driver license or ID card by providing a copy of their DD214 reflecting an honorable discharge from active duty or their United States Department of Veterans Affairs ID card. From 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., campers get to participate in games, activities and field trips to some of the most exciting places for kids in the Keys: Jacobs Aquatic Center, The Shipwreck Museum in Key West, and putt putt golf at Boondocks.

‘OPEN HOUSE’ DATES SET FOR HIGH SCHOOL, ELEMENTARY The open house for Marathon Middle High School is set for Monday, Aug. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. Students will receive a copy of their schedule, and also sign up for parking spaces and locker rentals. Parking spaces are available for $20 and students must present license, registration and insurance; preference will be given to upperclassmen.

Stanley Switlik Elementary school’s open house is set for Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 10 to 11 a.m. Kids and parents will be able to visit homerooms and meet teachers.

In addition, students can attend a health fair hosted by Community Health of South Florida on Saturday, Aug. 10 to receive a school physical or sports physical, ranging from $35 to $50. In Marathon, the health fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CHI office located at 2855 Overseas Highway. In Tavernier, the health fair runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the 91200 Overseas Highway location, in the Winn-Dixie plaza.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL $20 FEE COVERS ALL SUPPLIES Back to school shopping just got a whole lot easier for the parents of students at Stanley Switlik Elementary school. A $20 flat fee covers everything for the entire school year. Kids will only need to supply their own lunch boxes and backpacks.

“This means parents don’t have to go shopping on the mainland. The materials are high quality, and everyone gets the same thing. By ordering in bulk, we can keep costs down,” said Principal Brett Unke.

Cash and checks will also be accepted at school.

M

arathon has a new offering for residents who prefer the “natural” side of modern medicine. Meet Roger Haines, owner of Serenity CBD and E-liquids. A self-described “businessman all my life,” Haines has constantly searched for new opportunities in growing industries.

One such opportunity came at the very end of last year.

In December, Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill. The bill provided continuations and modifications of many agricultural policies, but among the most notable was the legalization of regulated production of hemp products. The word “hemp” to some is synonymous with marijuana, but there is one key difference. While marijuana and hemp products do come from the same cannabis plant, hemp products may not contain more than 0.3 percent of THC, the compound in the cannabis plant associated with the “high” effects of marijuana.

Upon seeing the change in legislation and imagining its long term effects, Haines decided it was time to open his first hemp products store in March of 2019. However, finding the right location with a willing landlord was a challenge. “I was searching for a location on the west coast and had an opportunity in Tucson, Arizona, but I thought, ‘It’s just not the right place.’” The “right place” soon made itself available in Marathon, and Haines acquired his first store in June.

With a soft opening on Aug. 1, and a grand opening soon to follow, Serenity offers a plethora of CBD-infused products, from tinctures and vapor cartridges to infused joint and muscle creams, face masks, reef-safe sunscreens, and edible products.

Thanks to the work of David Klein, developer of the Jelly Belly brand, even CBD-infused jelly beans are available. To go along with its hemp products, the store also carries oils and hardware for more traditional electronic cigarettes, and there’s even a pet products section for Marathon’s ever-growing population of furry companions.

For Haines, quality is a main concern when selecting new products. “We want to be a reputable store, and the way to do that is to sell the best products available,” he explained. “This isn’t something I’d want to buy at a gas station. When it comes to CBD, the cheapest way to get there is probably with the worst things you can put in your body.” Serenity looks for THC-free products that are third-party tested with guaranteed composition analysis, and focuses on the more widely-known brands and products as its flagship offerings.

As the store continues to grow with everchanging legislation and development of the business sector, Haines’ focus is on helping those who could experience beneficial health effects through the use of his products. While formal research is still ongoing in many cases, several current users speak to the wide-ranging effects that the use of CBD has had on their overall health. Those who use the products have spoken to their stressrelieving and revitalizing properties, helping with anything from anxiety and depression to sleep improvement. Some have even reported more visible effects like reductions in seizure frequencies and durations.

Haines’ goal is eventually to open 50 stores and help future customers in the same way that CBD has helped his family and friends. His aim, he says, is to provide a natural alternative to many of the traditional synthesized medications for those who wish to give it a try. “I know how many people it’s helped,” he said. “I’ve watched it with my own eyes.”

arathon did not exist prior to 1908. Originally, Marathon was a settlement on the island of Key Vaca. It was not the first of the island’s settlements, but it certainly grew to become the most significant community.

One of the earliest settlements established on Key Vaca in the years after Florida became an American territory was Port Monroe, founded by Joshua Appelby and Captain John Fiveash in 1822.

Port Monroe was a shortlived community. Another early community to appear in the historical record was Conchtown, said to have been located at the east end of Key Vaca. In the 1850s, Conchtown was home to William Bethel, Temple Pent, and Richard Russell, among others.

Russell would leave Conchtown circa 1854 and move to Upper Matecumbe Key. George Adderly would move away from Upper Matecumbe Key in the early 1890s and settle on Key Vaca, where Crane Point Hammock is today. A small settlement developed in the area of that site that is remembered as Adderlytown.

It would be a few years, not until 1908, that the place name Marathon would enter the history books. Initially a railroad work camp, Marathon would begin to transition into a community providing school and church services in 1910.

JIMMY SCHMIDT, 2003-2019 This coming Sunday, the city of Marathon will bid a fond farewell to Marathon’s first director of Parks and Recreation. After 16 years of leading the department, Schmidt is retiring. He leaves a lasting legacy and although he will be sorely missed — tales of his compassion, affinity for the park’s grass

• Marathon Councilman and former Parks and Rec board member Luis Gonzalez said Jimmy was “an incredible asset” for the City of Marathon and that the department is ready to take the next step due to the foundation laid by Schmidt. “Whenever I approach him about a certain issue, his immediate response is, ‘Do you want the politically correct answer, or do you want the New York guy to answer?’”

• Immediately upon taking over as executive director of Crane Point Museum, an overwhelmed Charlotte Quinn frantically called her friend Jimmy for advice. “He said, ‘Chill out. You’ve only been there an hour.’”

• “I will always remember the first time I saw that fake tooth of his fall out,” says Coach Andre Garvey. “It was funny, man. There is no story. It’s just Jimmy.”

• Jaymie Robinson said Jimmy is a mentor not only to the kids of Marathon, but her own 3-year-old daughter. “He taught her how to throw a ball in the office — which she shouldn’t do. And also taught her how to stick her tongue out at people — which she also shouldn’t do. I am sure there are other bad habits he taught her that will be with her for the rest of her life.”

• “Jimmy would always listen before making any kind of decision, “ said Parks and Rec’s Austin Tubbs.

“Even though it was usually my fault, he would always hear me out.”

• Former Marathon city manager Mike Puto hired Jimmy Schmidt. “He was very fortunate to work for me,” said Puto. “Jimmy has a bright future ahead of him thanks in large part to my tutelage. You’re welcome.”

• “With his perpetual scowl, and ever-present cigar, tough-as-nails attitude and cut-the-BS Noo Yak accent, we would most expect to hear Jimmy Schimdt say, ‘You kids get off my lawn,’” said Marathon Mayor John Bartus. “But for 16 years as Marathon’s Park and Rec director, Jimmy welcomed kids of all ages on his lawn, his fields, his courts. Enjoy your retirement, and in the immortal words of Pink Floyd, ‘Have a Cigar!’”

arathon High School has a new head baseball coach — Joey Gonzalez. The 2012 MHS graduate said it’s his dream job.

“When the opportunity presented itself, I immediately knew that I wanted to pursue it,” he said.

Gonzalez is coming off an extremely successful four-year coaching stint of Marathon Middle School’s junior varsity team. The team finished 29-1 last year and a lot of the young talent is moving up to the varsity team this year.

MHS Athletic Director Lance Martin made the announcement on Aug. 5 with some encouraging words: “Joey is a great addition to our athletic department as the head baseball coach. He has great knowledge of the game. He is an excellent educator and coach who is well respected by our staff, students and community. He grew up in our school system and understands how unique of a community

we are representing in the Keys.

Lastly, he will continue the stability our baseball program had for the past 14 seasons under Luis Leal.”

The new coach also teaches ESOL, or English as a second language, to high school students. His brother Luis Jr., also a teacher at the MHS, will be his assistant coach.

Gonzalez acknowledges the legacy and influence of his predecessor, Luis Leal.

“Not only did he teach me about baseball, he’s also taught me about team management,” Gonzalez said. “He’s been such a great mentor and teacher to me.”

He said he has high hopes for the team.

“This team is young and has a lot of talent. They’ve been playing together for years. And now they are coming into their own — older, stronger, faster. They’ve put in their time.”

The high school’s ball teams will be getting a big bump of interest this year, of course, due to the new facilities. (See column on this page, and photos on pages 24-25.)

Marathon High School’s new $12 million athletic complex* is going to have a huge impact not only on the students, but also the community.

Let me put it this way: it makes me want to become a football player. Readers may wish to pause here, and catch their breath after laughing very hard at this notion, but it’s true. I also want to play baseball and run track. Or, more likely, I will at least run a mile on that brand new track once it goes down.

MHS Athletic Director Lance Martin said the new track surface will be blue. “Not red,” he said, “which is standard, but not our school color.” Martin is pretty sober about the new complex in the face of my crazy enthusiasm, but I can tell he’s incredibly proud and humbly balanced on the precipice of what will undoubtedly be a surge of MHS athletic excellence.

I’m pretty sure the rest of the town is going to have a similar reaction. Certainly, spectators will be much more comfortable in this new arena. There’s better parking, two concession stands, new restrooms, brand new bleachers, a press box … the list goes on and on. The Marathon Athletic Alumni Club is going to need a lot more burgers and a lot more help behind the counter. (Sign up to volunteer!)

Earlier this week, the football team was on the practice field — of better quality than our old football field for games — a gorgeous expanse of green just behind the new bleachers. Assistant football coach Jason Long laughed when I said I wanted to play.

“Yes, that’s what we’re hoping. Kids are going to see this and want to play,” he said.

Head football coach Mac Childress was more effusive: “This new facility is on par with what you would find at a good community college. It’s incredible,” he said.

Ditto the new baseball and softball fields, the new floor in the gym.

And that’s just the impact it’s having on the adults … imagine what the kids will think and feel about having such a professional space. Practicing on a regulation length track (instead of sprinting between mailboxes on the bike path) will improve performance. It also makes them better students.

Several months ago, during the planning of the new fields, then-MHS Athletic Director Teresa Konrath told me so.

“The requirement to play sports is a 2.0 grade point average, also the requirement for graduation,” she said. “It goes together because students have something to strive for. Sports teaches discipline as well as time management. These are essential to being successful in academics.

Sports have expectations, which flows into a kid’s character, which flows into the classroom.”

The new athletic complex is a huge outlay by the Monroe County School District. Rightly or wrongly, many Marathon residents believe they are treated as the “red-headed stepchild” by the district, passed over in favor of the Key West and Upper Keys communities. The district staff, and the board, will be able to point to this and say that’s not true. The students will certainly benefit, and in less tangible ways that are no less important, so will the city of Marathon. I am thankful for the investment for our future.

MHS TEAMS ALREADY AT PRACTICE

he $12 million athletic fields for Marathon High School are almost complete. It was a vast project completed over the summer, in time for the start of the new school year on Wednesday, Aug. 14. In addition to a new combination football and soccer field, there’s a regulationsize track, practice field, bleachers, a press box, separate softball and baseball fields and two — yes, two — concession stands. Oh, and the gym has a brand new floor for the basketball and volleyball teams. The front of the school has been reconfigured to add student parking, as well. The only part of the complex that isn’t yet complete is the track. That will be unveiled as soon as it’s complete in the Marathon Weekly, and then to the public at the first home football game scheduled for Friday, Aug. 30.

t was “game on” at the Turtle Hospital’s Annual Coast Guard Appreciation Cook-out on Aug. 4 to celebrate Coast Guard Day. USCG Marathon Station members and their families enjoyed a fun-filled day of good food, cold beer, games, swimming and meet and greet with sea turtles on the Turtle Hospital grounds. Games included tug of war, horseshoes, bocce ball and a favorite among guests, corn hole. Winners went home with bragging rights and trophies. The USCG is an incredible partner to the Turtle Hospital, assisting with offshore sea turtle rescues in the Florida Keys. Staff from the hospital said Coast Guard Day is a perfect time to show appreciation to our local heroes.

odney Bertelsen from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explains: The regular lobster harvest season started on Aug. 5 and ends on March 31st next year.

The closed harvest season in July coincides with the greatest part of the breeding season.

If lobsters were to be found with eggs (an orange to brown mass under the female’s abdomen) during the sport or regular season they must be immediately returned to the water unharmed.

The average female lobster in the Florida Keys produces about 300,000 eggs in a clutch.

We believe most of these lobsters produce up to three clutches during the spring and summer, with an average of about 21 to 23 days between clutches.

All the females we tracked would leave their home grounds — be it Hawk’s Channel, the main reef or rocky ridges outside the reef — and traveled south to deeper water (100 feet or more) where they presumably released their eggs into the water currents.

After that, they nearly always returned to their home area three to seven days later, depending on how far they had to travel.

Acoustic tracking: Since 2003 we have conducted several studies that allow us to track lobsters with acoustic transmitters on their backs. The transmitters emit sound clicks which are picked up by the receivers we have placed in the water. The little transmitters are stationed on their backs with a plumber’s epoxy for adults and

The tags stay with the lobster until the tag is harmlessly molted away in a few weeks for juveniles and a few months for adults.

Besides learning how females deliver clutches of eggs to the ocean currents, we were able to find out more about the adult and juvenile lobsters’ feeding and sheltering habits and how far they can travel — up to five kilometers in a night!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

n your issue of Marathon Weekly of Aug. 1, it was very good to read not only excellent coverage of our parish of Saint Columba and its work in the wider community, but also the piece by Brad Bertelli on the change in the population of early Marathon from that of a railroad construction camp to that of a more traditional community that included families with children, who arrived after 1908.

I was particularly interested in Bertelli’s observation that at the time “there was no man of the cloth who was a permanent resident,” but that a clergyman (he does not say of what church) “would visit periodically to hold services in the (new) school building” that was constructed to meet the needs of newly arrived families with children. He also notes that the railroad’s resident engineer, Mr. W. R. Hawkins, would conduct services in the absence of a minister.

These statements, while doubtless true, need some clarification and expansion, hints of which I offer here.

According to the literature that has been produced by the Crane Point Hammock Museum and Nature Trail, George Adderley had been living in the Keys since 1890, and had been settled on his property on Key Vaca with his wife and adopted daughter since 1903 or so. It is not clear from the evidence that I have seen when exactly Adderley and his family came to Key Vaca from the Upper Keys (whether it was in 1903 or a year or two before), but certainly very quickly from 1903 he and others were settled in “Adderley Town,” which grew to include what we now know as the George

OBITUARY Adderley House and ten other homes.

Adderley was himself a lay reader (or lay preacher) of the Anglican (Episcopal) Church, and was perhaps authorized in some official way to conduct certain forms of worship according to The Book of Common Prayer. He and his fellow Bahamian settlers would have taken their religious observance very seriously, even without a priest and access to the sacraments. Indeed, we know that Adderley conducted services in his home until he and his fellow residents of Adderley Town could build their own church. It seems that this church was not built before 1945, so this means that Adderley held services in his home for his community for the better part of 40 years.

It is therefore likely the case that religious services were conducted regularly (probably at least on Sundays, and perhaps also on major feasts of the church that fall on weekdays) in Adderley Town on Marathon from at least 1903 - some 6 years or so before other services began to be held in the new schoolhouse.

And while Adderley was not in the technical sense a clergyperson (what Berelli calls “a man of the cloth”), he may well have had some kind of authorization, and may also have had some training, to function as the leader of a congregation in the absence of a priest. He may even have obtained such authorization and training before leaving the Bahamas some years before, where communities were often without priests and where lay leaders frequently led isolated congregations. In any case, he certainly acted as such.

There are details of the early history of the church in the Keys that further research must still make clearer to us, but there is no doubt that in Adderley and the community of Adderley Town there was a lively, faithful Episcopalian community that worshipped regularly from the arrival of its first settlers in about 1903.

Adderley is one of the unknown, yet faithful, saints of the Episcopal Church, whose commitment to God and to his church is part of the foundation on which we in our Diocese of Southeast Florida are privileged to stand over a century later.

Incidentally, our present congregation of Saint Columba, which was founded in the mid1950s out of missionary expansion from Saint Paul’s, Key West, occupies land, part of which was given by Francis and Mary Crane, to whom Adderley had sold his nearby property just a few years before in 1949, when he moved to Key West.

So it would appear that, with the exception of the brief years 1949-1954, there has been more or less continuous worship of the Episcopal Church on Marathon in more or less the same area since 1903. And my suspicion is that this makes the Episcopal Church the oldest established church community on Marathon.

But of course my historical judgment may be unduly influenced by a certain bias.

RONALD J. PLATTER Ronald J. Platter passed away at the age of 87 on June 16, 2019.

He is survived by his wife Annette (Braun) and his three adult sons, Stephen, Mark, and Ronald, Jr., along with five grandchildren.

Ron, a nine-time decorated U.S. Naval Korean War veteran, who served on the USS Toledo and received the rank of petty officer first class, was born Aug. 31, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He had a home in the Florida Keys for over 35 years, primarily in the Marathon area, and began living here full time in 2010.

Ron retired as the President of The H. Dennert Distributing Corporation of Cincinnati after starting as a salesman in 1957.

Ron had other passions including horse racing and banking, serving on the board of directors at First National Bank of the Florida Keys. He was an Honorary Conch, a 35-year-plus member of the American Legion, and supported many local charities.

Ron will be terribly missed by his family and friends. We are blessed and we are better for having known him. Rest in Peace, Prince Ron, you certainly deserve it!

I

f you’ve been out and about as I have, you’re likely used to seeing them everywhere.

All shapes Dr. Stanley Sack and sizes, clouds of mist emanating from them. And while “vaping” might not be as irritating to non-smoking noses as conventional cigarettes, there is a lot left to learn about what’s in that cloud and what it could do to our bodies.

What’s more, vaping and ecigarettes — collectively known as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) — seem to have found their niche market: our youth. Since 2014, electronic cigarettes have overtaken conventional ones as the nicotine fix of choice among adolescents. More locally concerning is the preponderance of youth vaping in Monroe County, which is above the national average. Perhaps it’s just a little too easy to get here.

Although few of us as teens want to do anything that hints at becoming our parents, smoking seems to be the exception; it’s just been updated. The companies that push this stuff seem to know also how to push the buttons of what appears to be their target audience.

Certainly, the flavored products are a big draw — they’re sometimes packaged to look like, say, candy.

I’m sure the “new tech” thing is appealing, and I’ve even read that due to resemblance of the devices to other objects such as pens and flash drives, they’re so easy to hide, that in some places, they’re even being used in classrooms. Regardless of whether or not the devices are specifically aimed at youth, this is not big tobacco’s first marketing rodeo; they know how to get the word out there.

Where youth is concerned, there are lots of problems with this. First, nicotine has been shown to be harmful to the developing

As the city’s parks grew in size and scope, so did Jimmy’s duties. But Jimmy always got the job done, and he basically created the Parks and Rec Department we have today.

As usual, there will be fun activities for the kids, fun for the adults as well, and a chance to thank Jimmy for his years of dedication and hard work. Marathon is a better place because of people like Jimmy, and this is our chance to wish him well on his retirement.

adolescent brain. Many ENDS have lots more nicotine than conventional cigarettes. Although vaping doesn’t expose the body to as many other chemicals as regular cigarettes, the exposure is not zero, and the vapor has been shown to contain carcinogens and chemicals that can harm unborn children.

Even the flavorings are being looked at for harmful effects when inhaled. Bystanders can inhale the nicotine of second-hand vapor, something that is certainly a risk for non-vaping teen contacts of users.

Finally, many who start vaping as teens will go on to smoke regular cigarettes as adults.

In the extreme, this phenomenon has had some tragic consequences for teens. Stories abound of promising athletic careers stopped in their tracks due to vaping. And although rare, the phenomenon has literally blown up in people’s faces due to devices exploding.

So … what are we doing about all this? Although there is a lot of legal wrangling, the FDA has become involved in the regulation of ENDS. Many states have raised the legal age to 21, and some are looking to ban flavored products. Although not specifically youth-related, Florida has banned vaping and e-cigarette use in the workplace as of July 1. Florida does tend to be in the middle of the pack, so to speak, on a lot of issues, and one can only hope that the legislation specific to youth will eventually arrive here.

Until that time, we have the timeworn solutions: communicate with your teen, set a good example by not indulging yourself, and use all the resources that are out there (and there are several in the Keys) if you do have a nicotine-addicted teen.

‘BIG SKY OVER TROUBLED WATERS’ NAVY COMMISSIONS NEW COMBAT SHIP USS BILLINGS SARAH THOMAS

hat’s 398 feet long, costs $500 million and is on extended vacation in Key West?

It’s not the latest luxury condo development, but the Navy’s brand new littoral combat ship the USS Billings (LCS 15). A “littoral� ship is agile, stealthy and built for speed — 40 knots to be exact, or approximately 46 mph, which is damn fast for a combat ship. It’s powered by two gas turbines and two massive diesel engines that combine for propulsion to the tune of 120,000 horsepower. The ship was built by Marinette Marine at a shipyard in Wisconsin, named for the Montana town and docked in its current home in Key West July 28. The ship hit a slight snag in Montreal earlier this summer — colliding with a merchant ship and requiring repairs. Since the repairs and a change of command, it’s been smooth sailing for the sunny shores of Key West.

The official commissioning ceremony of the ship was Aug. 3, on the Naval Base at Trumbo Point, meaning the USS Billings and her 70-person crew are officially “reporting for duty.�

Why is the USS Billings so special? Well, she boasts the latest technologies and capabilities for multiple types of combat missions. “As threats progress,� said CRD Nathan Rowan, commanding officer of the ship, “the Navy builds ships to counter those threats. We need a ship that can go into shallow water for operations — the only ships that can do that now are the amphibious ships, and they are pretty slow.

We need ships that are agile.� Agile the Billings is; not only is she fast, but she has a shallow draft — only 14 feet, allowing her to maneuver into waters too shallow for a combat ship like a destroyer to traverse.

The process began three years ago, with the construction of the body. “You just start with the metal,� said Rowan. Then, the ship goes out for testing — making sure everything works as it should and will respond under combat conditions. The crew is now training in Key West. Next, the ship will depart for Jacksonville, to receive orders for deployment. The ship is scheduled for deployment in late 2020 or early 2021, according to Rowan.

4 “Locally, we’ve been doing special operations,� he said, “and we’re excited for any opportunity we have to test new technologies.� The ship will also be updated near-constantly with new equipment. Since the crew is relatively small — the 70 members plus 30 or so if a flight crew is added — they are all highly specialized and multifunctional in their training. “If you look at the crews of other combatants and cruisers,� Rowan said, “they have roughly anywhere between 250 and 300 people, but we have 70. We are capable of doing the same missions that those ships do.� The difference is the expertise of the crew. “All of our people have a job in everything that we do,� said Executive Officer, Commander Aaron Helgerson of the challenge of a small crew. “So they have to reconfigure themselves and go to another spot on the ship, so we can start our next day or next mission.� Each crewmember has at least two or three duties, and their training allows

5 them to “plug and play” in different positions. Rowan calls the crew “the best and the brightest” who have been specially screened and trained for 9 months to a year and a half to serve on this type of surface combat ship.

In short, they can do more with less — it’s a sleek ship and crew, configured to a number of different types of missions.

What are those missions? The Billings is built for three types: counter mine missions, shallow water anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare. So that means it could be interacting with mines, subs, or other surface combat ships. The Billings will be outfitted with special mine-finding technology along with the existing self-defense systems, sensors and weapons onboard.

There are a few key features of the ship: the CCS, Central Control Station, the bridge (the little room up top with the steering controls and a killer view), the AMZ (the airborne mission zone) and the WMZ (the waterborne mission zone). So that means the ship can

7 travel holding helicopters on the top deck and additional boats (they’ll embark with two) below. The CCS and the bridge share some of the same technologies, crucially, cameras and steering controls. While the USS Billings is a “smart ship” with the latest technologies, the captain can actually steer the ship from a small joystick located on the bridge.

Don’t worry, they have two backup steering controls.

While the future of the USS Billings may include some incredibly serious combat situations, the present includes a little down time in Key West. The ship is a friendly environment for visitors and crew, where everyone does their own chores — the commanding officer washes his own dishes and does his own laundry. The crew brags on the great food coming out of the galley, including a favorite night: Taco Tuesday. Even better? The Billings flew a Conch Republic flag alongside the stars and stripes when pulling into port in Key West.

isney aficionados Joanne and Jim Zimmerman have a vast collection of memorabilia. Joanne said it’s probably “hundreds of items,” although she quickly clarifies that it’s not technically “theirs” — it belongs to their grown daughters. That said, there’s still a lot.

And so the couple put together a collection for the lobby of the Marathon Community Theatre (Joanne is the executive vice president, Jim is a board member). The collection was on display during the recent “Tah Dance,” and the children’s musical “Peter Pan Jr.” The Zimmermans donated 20% of the sale proceeds to the nonprofit theater.

“A lot of the items were in storage or in the closet or under the bed. We figured instead of keeping it hidden, someone should enjoy it,” said Joanne.

The sale, plus the raffle of two special Disney pieces, netted about $600 for the community theater.

The couple’s fascination with Disney dates back to 1980, when they visited Disney World on their honeymoon. It was Jim’s first time at Disney World, but Joanne had visited a few times before with her extended family. The enduring family tradition swelled, and for the longest time the theme park was a monthly event for the family. One of their daughters — Jamie, married to Patrick Stevens — even got married at Disney World.

“Some of the pieces we will never get rid of because they have special meaning — like the mementos from Jamie and Patrick’s wedding,” Joanne said.

The Zimmermans, and now Jamie and Patrick Stevens and their children, have traded Disney traditions for new theater traditions. Jamie co-directed “Peter Pan Jr.” and their children both had parts in the musical. In addition to her duties as executive vice president, Joanne teaches dance classes at MCT; there are eight different types of dance taught most evenings of the week and classes are free for theater members.

“Jim just finished rebuilding the dance floor,” said Joanne.

onroe County Strategic Planner Kimberly Matthews will host a community presentation on the Future of Monroe County Public Library’s Marathon Branch on Thursday, Aug. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Marathon Government Center.

The public is invited to attend the interactive meeting and participants will have the opportunity to provide input on the types of library programs they would like to see offered at the new branch. Monroe County project management staff will also be on hand to discuss the timeline.

The presentation will include the vision of the new Marathon library as a “community living room.”

The construction of the state-of-theart, user-centric legacy building is funded through the one-cent infrastructure sales tax. The new design will be open, modern and flexible and has also incorporated solar energy. Monroe County broke ground on the new space in July. The new branch has a tentative opening date in September 2020.

The annual Duck Key security assessment is based on the number of improved or unimproved lots contained within the Duck Key Security District. The total annual assessment revenue to be collected within Duck Key for the upcoming fiscal year is estimated to be $115,000. The Duck Key Security District Advisory Board has recommended an increase in the annual budget and annual assessment rates for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2019, from the current rates of $266 per improved lot and $26 per unimproved lot, to $292 per improved lot and $28 per unimproved lot.
