M

ini-lobster season has become a notorious time of the year in the Keys, when locals groan about out-oftowners barreling down the Overseas Highway and dropping anchor with all the control of a pack of 6-year-olds on a sugar high. On the innocent end of things, tourists annoy us; on the more dangerous end, folks can hurt the fragile reef ecosystems or, even worse, themselves.

The good news is: this mini-season was more peaceful and less destructive than some years past. Officer Bobby Dube of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offered us a report on his experience on the water during mini-season, July 24 and 25.

“I worked both days,” he said, “and I worked our information booth preceding mini-season. There were a lot more people that stopped by than last year, and I’d like to draw the decline in arrests, etc. from that!” Dube was posted up at Divers Direct in Key Largo. “I was there 10 hours a day: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. I don’t think I’ve been as hot,” he laughed.

Dube and others at FWC, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Coast Guard, the National Marine Sanctuary and many other entities worked

together to ensure a safe and successful lobster season. Dube reported very few incidents and injuries.

The most serious incident reported by the Sheriff’s Office occurred July 25: An out-of-county man was struck by a boat prop on his leg/foot and was taken to Conch Key, then Mariners Hospital and then was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami.

His injuries were not expected to be life-threatening. The Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the search for a missing diver near Spanish Harbor Bridge, but the driver was found safe shortly thereafter.

Dube attributed some of the success to good, clear weather and good visibility. “It let people spread out,” he said, “so they could go wherever they chose, to the bayside or oceanside.

When the weather includes high winds and bad visibility, people tend to be by bridges and on top of each other, and that increases risk of accidents.”

There were a few incidents (see our “By the Numbers,” opposite page): a man who was illegally spearing snook (which are undersize and out of season) at Tom’s Harbor, a pair of brothers from Broward taken to jail for 12 undersize and over-limit lobsters, and a man who just couldn’t help himself but get started on lobstering on Tuesday before season opened.

“He started bully netting before midnight, and everyone was trying to warn him, but he didn’t listen,” Dube said, “and there was an officer right there among them.”

The funniest story? “We had a gentlemen that ended up going to jail in the Lower Keys, because there were officers pulling him over, and he tried to throw a bag of lobsters over.” The only problem?

“The bag was tied to a cleat on the vessel … so he went to jail.”

The biggest bust was of a boat that was 37 lobsters over the limit. Greed isn’t rewarded when it comes to miniseason!

Dube and FWC were glad there weren’t many arrests and no other serious injuries reported. All lost divers reported to FWC were located and boats in distress aided.

“No big lobster mobster stories,” said Dube. “It was a relatively safe twoday sport season for everyone down here.”

n April 24, Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady issued a proclamation declaring July 2019 to be Opioid Awareness Month within the state court system. Chief Justice Canady stated: “It is incumbent upon judges and court staff members, particularly those serving in problem-solving courts and family courts, to understand the basics of addiction and its impact on the brain, the standard for treatment of opioid use disorder, and legal implications and court responses to individuals with this disorder.”

The need for education and awareness is clear; Florida is experiencing an opioid crisis. We know that this epidemic is more than a public health issue. The courts have a frontline view of the devastating impact that the opioid epidemic is having on our state, destroying futures and families. At some point, most people with opioid use disorder end up in court. Perhaps they have been arrested for stealing to feed their habit or been deemed unfit parents. Whatever the reason, the justice system is now the primary referral source for addiction treatment in the country. Whether in a criminal court, family court or problemsolving court, the courts have

a role in combating this crisis, ensuring that people with opioid use disorder get the treatment they need.

To provide more treatment in the justice system, federal and state opioid task force groups have recommended more problem-solving courts. The Sixteenth Judicial Circuit is fortunate to have a drug court, a problem-solving court for dependency, juvenile delinquency and criminal proceedings.

These courts link participants with treatment and provide court oversight with treatment and recovery teams.

The court and team members are

dedicated to crafting responses and solutions that are required to combat this serious and complicated epidemic.

Currently, the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder combines medication with behavioral therapies.

Aside from the clinical effectiveness of medication-assisted treatment, it also allows for patients to regain a sense of normalcy and functionality in their lives by often decreasing criminal activity associated with substance use disorders, increases the ability to secure and maintain employment, and even improves birth outcomes for women

who have opioid use disorder while pregnant.

The courts are working to combat Florida’s opioid crisis.

n 1909, Marathon began to transition from a railroad construction camp to more of a traditional community.

Families with children, absent in 1908, began to arrive and live in private homes. With the arrival of children came the need for a school and, in 1909, Miss Effie Knowles became Marathon’s first public school teacher.

The school, a one-room wood-frame building, was home to a dozen students that first year, many of whom were the children of railroad engineers.

While there was no man of the cloth who was a permanent resident, one would visit periodically to hold services in the school building.

On occasions when there was no one to minister Sunday services, the railroad’s resident engineer W. R. Hawkins would perform them.

He would remain the resident engineer, stationed at Key Vaca, from 1909 to 1912.

Hawkins was a diligent note taker and volumes of his diaries help to paint a clear picture of life on Key Vaca in the early years of Marathon’s development. In one of his diary entries from 1910, just prior to a hurricane, he recorded, “Cockroaches are uneasy tonight, a ‘Conch’ sign of windy weather.”

he annual Kilts in the Keys party marks the halfway point to the seventh annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival. Set for Sunday, Aug. 4, the party supports the planning efforts of the festival that occurs in early January. The party begins at 5 p.m. at Herbie’s Bar and Chowder House in Marathon.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all of our volunteers and families,” said Rev. Deborah McConaughey of St. Columba Church. The church hosts both events to raise funds for its Hammock House, which provides free after-school care and

summer camps for local children. “I’m definitely looking forward to working with Peter and Shirley of Herbie’s and their whole staff. It’s a great partnership and friendship and a chance to spend time with friends.”

Peter Demaras said his involvement with Kilts in the Keys over the past four years is one of civic pride.

“Hammock House does so much for our local kids who live at, or below, the poverty level,” Demaras said. “We have to help.

It’s our responsibility as members of the community. We help our future by positively impacting the kids’ present.”

As usual, West of Galway will provide the musical entertainment with crowd pleasers like “Waltzing Matilda” and “Back Home in Derry.” (McConaughey says she likes the band because the lead singer, Bernie, usually grants her a turn at the mic!)

There will be food, drink, games, raffle baskets and a children’s bounce house.

Proceeds from the Kilts in the Keys party power the Florida Keys Celtic Festival. Never content to rest on their laurels, organizers are planning bigger and better things for the 2020 festival. New this year: the Florida Keys’ very own tartan.

Designer Ganine Derleth chose the colors from a photo of friends she snapped at Sombrero Beach — blues in every hue, green and sand white.

“This is going to be great for the Keys. Everyone can get a shawl or something,” she said. “We might just be creating the biggest clan in the world — the Florida Keys Clan.”

St. Columba is famous for its generous outreach — afterschool care, storm recovery, affordable housing, etc. The proceeds from the annual festival feed the KILTS IN THE habit.

L

issette Quintero was a part-time ballroom dancing teacher and a stay-at-home mom when she decided to enroll in the police academy. Oh, and she was in her middle 30s.

“Yes, that’s a leap,” she said, smiling. “But this job has been a dream come true. It’s about making a difference and protecting the people who need a voice. It’s a passion more than a job.”

Quintero was recently promoted to sergeant of Road Patrol for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office operations in the Middle Keys.

That’s after a stint with the Major Crimes division, and then Internal Affairs.

“I loved being a detective with Major Crimes, but it was an incredible amount of hours. My then-16year-old daughter said, ‘I never see you.’ So, it was time for a change,” Quintero said.

With her daughter safely enrolled at Florida State University, and the promotion she was offered, it meant a move for Quintero and husband Lt. Ryan Devitt, a Monroe County firefighter to the Middle Keys.

What’s the strangest call you’ve ever been on? Well, a man called us and told us he was chained to his bed. We knocked on the door and his father answered. The dad said his son asked him to do it, so he couldn’t leave the house to buy drugs.

After sorting it all out, we sort of shrugged and told them they were consensual adults and to call us again if they needed anything further.

What’s your definition of community policing? Building camaraderie between law enforcement and the community.

What do you like about National Night Out? It’s a chance for the kids to be a SWAT officer, or a firefighter, to see us first responders in a different life. Sometimes we come into their world at a bad moment. National Night Out is the flip side — to show that we care, we’re here to protect and help you.

Did your daughter support your decision to become a cop? No, not at first.

She didn’t want the hassle of being known as the daughter of a police officer, and being branded a snitch or something like that. That was a difficult stigma for her.

But that changed as she matured and she started sending some of her friends to me that were having trouble. As a mother of a teenager, I was a little more accepting of the challenges they encountered. I am grateful to have my daughter be who she was.

Do you play sports? Oh no. If I said yes, I would immediately end up on some intramural team. I’m more of a stage nerd and dancer.

What job would you be terrible at?

Teaching kids. I’m an instructor at the police academy at the College of the Florida Keys, but as far as kids … (shaking her head) … no.

What is a weakness? Well, when you work nights and someone asks you to go out lobstering, you fall asleep in the sun.

That’s why I’m so tan right now.

What’s on your bucket list? I don’t have one; I just do what I want. One time I took a trip to India by myself. I had the means, and I wanted to do it, so I did.

n Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office will sponsor National Night Out events in the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys. The Key West Police Department is co-hosting the Lower Keys/ Key West event.

All of the events will feature food, refreshments and a chance to meet your neighbors, members of the Sheriff’s Office, police officers, firefighters and members of the military from a wide variety of divisions, departments and special teams and many others who are involved in the field of public safety in the Keys.

The goal of National Night Out is to bring the community together to discuss how to make neighborhoods cleaner, safer and more secure. The Sheriff's Office will have crime prevention information to share at the event. Community members will learn how to heighten their crime and drug prevention awareness.

“National Night Out is a great event for us, because it’s a perfect time to meet those of us in law enforcement in a fun and relaxed setting, particularly for kids,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “Everyone is invited to come out and meet those of us who patrol your neighborhood.”

The Sheriff’s Office hopes to generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Everyone participating will send a message to criminals, letting them know that Monroe County neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

Each event — depending on the area — will feature displays of the Sheriff’s Office elite units such as the Dive Team, SWAT, Crime Scene Investigation, among others. Also appearing will be the Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Highway Patrol, Park Services, Monroe County Fire Rescue and other fire districts, Monroe County schools, business chambers and more.

All the following events will occur on Tuesday, Aug. 6: The Marathon event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Sheriff’s Office Aviation Division Hangar at Florida Keys Marathon International Airport. Capt. Don Hiller and Lt. Derek Paul invite everyone to join them and have some fun.

Refreshments will provided by American Legion Post 154; Residents will be able to visit many law enforcement, public safety and community groups which will have booths set up at the event. Residents are invited to come take a look at the Trauma Star and other Sheriff’s Office aircraft! Marathon Fire Rescue will also be present.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? 18. My mother got it for me; she’s always been really open to my tattoos. She likes to say I’m one tattoo away from a freak show.

What was your first tattoo?

It’s a geisha tempting samurais on my thigh. It’s kind of hard to explain.

How many tattoos do you have? Well, it’s all one Japanese suit. I would say 75% of my body is tattooed and there are no tattoos on my face or hands.

Do you care more about the design or the tattoo artist?

Oh, the artist. Vinnie is my best friend. I plan to ride my motorcycle up to see him in September to get some work done.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? A minute after I turned 18 years old. As a little girl, I tattooed my baby dolls. Yes, my Betsy Wetsy had a full sleeve done with markers — skulls and fire and things like that.

What was your first tattoo?

Rich Uncle Pennybags from the Monopoly game, and then it went rapidly from there. My dad used to call me his little fire hydrant, so the next one was a giant shoulder cap with that in mind.

How many tattoos do you have? (Laughing) I’m going for one. Hold on a sec, I’m gonna take off my clothes and count.

Well, 18 and then a giant Monopoly back piece. No, wait. Twenty, twenty-one. I have 21 tattoos.

Do you care more about the design or the tattoo artist?

Oh, the designer, definitely. My friend Vinnie lived down here for seven or eight years and we became friends. His creative interpretations of what I want are perfect. We have the same taste and he nails it the first time, every time. He’s the only person I would trust to stick needles in me.

What’s your Keys-iest tattoo?

My rubber chicken that says Irma on it. We wired the rubber chicken to the grill of the car on the way home. My best friend left it for me in a pile of hurricane supplies. It’s my “remember to smile” totem.

Well, I’ve got a peony on my ass cheek. That’s kind of tropical, right?

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? On my 18th birthday. During my teenage rebellion, I felt I needed to do whatever my parents disliked or did not allow. That stage didn't last long, and I didn't get my next tattoo until I was into my 30s, when I gave it more thought. More money helped, too.

What was your first tattoo?

Waves. I always like being around the water.

How many tattoos do you have? Technically, only three.

Both arms are fully planned out sleeve tattoos, and there's one on my lower back. I've always liked the look of two full sleeves. I'm not big into the look of leg tattoos, but I have some thoughts for future back and side tattoos. These possible future tattoos would be large and pre-planned.

Do you care more about the design or the tattoo artist? Jon Hunter at South of Heaven Tattoo in Key Largo designed both sleeves. I gave him my ideas, and he created from there. Unfortunately, Jon moved away after Hurricane Irma. There are other artists just as talented as Jon at South of Heaven. I plan to go to their shop for any future tattoos.

What’s your Keys-iest tattoo?

My underwater sleeve; it has coral, an anemone, an octopus, and a jellyfish ... with a twist. I love skulls and so the faces of the octopus and the jellyfish are skulls.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? 18. I was able to get piercings before that, but was not allowed to get tattoos until the legal age, per my mother. I have always been fond of art and the idea of it being carried with you forever.

What was your first tattoo?

My first tattoo is of a fairy on a tree branch (original artwork by Amy Brown).

How many tattoos do you have? I have most of my body covered with the exception of my stomach, chest and some of my back/legs that are not covered yet.

Do you care more about the design or the tattoo artist? I am not specific on my tattoo designs. My tattoos are more of a self-expression for me and what I love. I have a variety of tattoos — The Grateful Dead, Japanese style sleeve, Tim Burton, Harry Potter and, of course, CATS! (I am the VP of the non-profit Forgotten Felines of the Florida Keys). Eighty percent of my tattoos have been done by Allen who owns Doc's Tattooz and some of his fellow artists, Chuck and Tony. I go into Doc's Tattooz with an idea of what I want and allow the artists to make the best art for me.

What’s your Keys-iest tattoo?

My Keys-iest tattoo is under my armpit (serratus anterior) of a paper boat in the water. I have plans for more ocean-related tattoos.

STUDY REVEALS KEY CONTRIBUTOR TO CORAL HEALTH PROBLEM

nvironmental stressors like warming water temperatures are contributing to massive coral death, scientists say. But a recent study with three decades of data collected from Looe Key Reef is revealing another serious problem — land-based nutrient runoff.

Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area is about 5.5 nautical miles south of Ramrod Key, about 8 nautical miles southwest of Bahia Honda State Park.

Data within the study, published in the international journal Marine Biology, shows living coral cover at Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area went from nearly 33 percent in 1984 to less than 6 percent in 2008. And while the annual rate of coral loss varied during the study, it increased between 1985-87 and 1996-99 following periods of heavy rainfall and increased water deliveries from the Everglades.

Between 1991-95, the study shows significant increases in Everglades runoff and heavy rainfall resulted in increases of reactive nitrogen, which cause biodiversity loss, at Looe Key. Phytoplankton levels for offshore reefs are also high as evidenced by the presence of macroalgae and harmful algal blooms due to excessive nutrients. The issue? Nutrient-enriched runoff, from improperly treated sewage and

fertilizers to topsoil, are increasing nitrogen levels. That’s causing phosphorus starvation in the corals and reducing their temperature threshold for bleaching.

“Our results provide compelling evidence that nitrogen loading from the Florida Keys and greater Everglades ecosystem caused by humans, rather than warming temperatures, is the primary driver of coral reef degradation at Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area during our long-term study,” said Brian Lapointe, senior author and a research professor at FAU’s Harbor Branch.

According to the study, nitrogen loading to the coast is predicted to increase by 19 percent globally from changes in rainfall due to climate change. Management actions are urgent and needed to prevent further degradation, and Lapointe said there are initiatives people can take about the nitrogen problem such as reducing fertilizer inputs, and at a larger level, increasing storage and treatment of storm water on the Florida mainland.

Andy Bruckner, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary research coordinator, said the study highlights the role nutrients play in the health of Florida’s reefs. However, he said it’s important to note that nutrients aren’t the only factor responsible for the decline. Climate change is also posing significant stress on reefs worldwide.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is working to address the severe coral disease outbreak throughout the Florida Reef Tract through a number of measures. In about three weeks, Andy Bruckner, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary research coordinator, says the sanctuary will release the “restoration blueprint for public comment.”

This plan includes a variety of alternatives to help reduce impacts to the sanctuary and improve protection to sanctuary resources, and it includes a number of management actions designed to restore coral reefs and other habitats.

“The major losses of coral to the sanctuary reefs is due to bleaching and disease, and both of these threats have occurred throughout the region in both areas affected by nutrient inputs as well as remote locations with no nutrient impacts,” he said. “We know elevated nitrogen can affect the symbiosis corals have with algae, and it can result in bleaching, but the recent large scale bleaching events (1997-98 and 2014-16) were global in extent. These resulted in large die-offs of coral both in areas with and without nitrogen input.”

The study also notes how improvements at sewage treatment plants are helping mitigate local land-based nitrogen contributions. Plants service 76,000 yearround residents and millions of visitors annually.

Bruckner says the Florida Keys have taken the first step by eliminating septic tanks and connecting houses and businesses to sewage treatment. But until nutrients from agriculture runoff, and runoff from Lake Okeechobee, are reduced, there will continue to be elevated nutrients reaching the Keys.

“The second larger source of nutrients is Florida Bay water and water carried from the west coast of Florida to the Keys,” he said. “This can be partially addressed through the proposed Everglades restoration.”

Rescue shows need for marine mammal hospital

T

wo Atlantic bottlenose dolphins were rescued off the shallow waters of Fiesta Key Campground and Marina at MM 70 on July 26. With the dolphins now in longterm care, the organization that helped save them continues its work to develop a marine mammal hospital.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) notified Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder of the situation involving the two dolphins.

“Seeing these two stranded dolphins struggling on their sides to just gasp a single breath of air devastated me. After righting the weaker of the two first and moving them both together into deeper water, it was sad to see that neither could stay upright without assistance.” says Capt. Matt Bellinger, who was on-site assisting in the rescue. “The reality was that both dolphins would’ve drowned on the incoming tide and it horrified me. I was relieved to see the arrival of the DPMMR crew and medical staff; there was hope for these magnificent beings.”

After two unsuccessful release attempts, medical evaluation by veterinarian Dr. Jillian Schwartz, and consultation with the NMFS, it was determined that both animals needed longterm rehabilitation to survive. DPMMR does not yet have the facilities necessary to offer such rehabilitative care, so the two animals were transferred to the only place in the state that had the capability to take on their rehabilitation: SeaWorld.

SeaWorld has rescued over 35,000 animals, including

an impressive 533 whales and dolphins. Here, the two dolphins will receive world-class veterinary care in a behind-the-scenes area for as long as it takes to make a full recovery.

The ultimate goal is for the two to be released back into Florida Keys waters, which depends on both the success of the rehabilitation and the NMFS, the governing agency that determines if an animal is ready for release, and if the animals are deemed non-releasable it will make the decision on where the animals should be placed.

"If it wasn't for SeaWorld, these animals would have had to be euthanized. We were really grateful for their partnership in this rescue and their willingness to support these dolphins’ rehabilitation." said Nancy Cooper, president of DPMMR. "As it stands right now, there is no facility authorized by the NMFS to carry out dolphin rehabilitation in the Florida Keys. However, we're working hard behind the scenes to obtain the funding to create a facility so that when these strand-

ings happen, the animals can undergo rehabilitation in their Keys home."

Cooper said DPMMR has secured a 2-acre plot in Key Largo to be used for rehabilitation facilities, but in order to become licensed by the NMFS to carry out any long-term rehabilitation, special facilities will need to be developed.

These include quarantine pools, filtration systems, sea pens and support areas (fish preparation, medical room and office space).

The initial development will cost around $2 million. Approximately $35,000 of this was raised at the organization's first “Connect to Protect” gala in May, but that still leaves a hefty amount to be raised.

“This stranding further reinforces the fact that we need a marine mammal hospital in the Keys," said Hunter Kinney, assistant director of development. "The only way to develop such a facility, however, is going to be through connecting with the people who want to financially support the hospital’s development.”

Kinney said they are actively working toward finding such a donor, but in the interim are accepting any donations to the cause, including in-kind services.

Annual event seeks to find new homes for dogs, cats, more

egan Richardson was scanning the Florida Keys SPCA website for volunteer opportunities when she stumbled across a photo of a Belgian Malinois. She said she couldn’t get the dog out of her head. After a month, constantly checking back to see if the dog was still waiting for adoption, she texted her husband in early July: “Dean, he’s still there.”

And so the Marathon couple made the drive to meet the one-year-old Rocky at the Key West shelter.

“Cathy Baier is an amazing adoption counselor,” said Megan. “She spent hours on the phone with me before we ever came to the shelter.

We were concerned about how the ‘puppy’ would get along with our older Belgian Malinois.”

Baier is the Key West shelter’s behavior program manager. She, of course, remembers the Richardsons and Rocky.

“Sometimes we’ll match adoptees with a breed they have experience with, because you know something about the breed’s predisposition. The chances for success are higher,” Baier said, adding that a new young male dog and older female match, generally speaking, is good.

Baier said the adoption process starts with a short questionnaire – history of animal ownership and lifestyle questions. Then there’s a conversation about details. Baier said she weighs not only the family’s wants, but also the animal’s needs.

It’s the shelter’s job to remind potential adopters of the reality of adopting an animal — not just the fun stuff, but the problems that can arise if the animal’s needs are not being met. Baier said families who are ready to welcome a baby, or a new job, or a move might want to press the pause button on an adoption. And young people especially need to consider how an animal will affect their lifestyle.

“I had one young man think about this and decide against adopting.

We love thoughtful people. If they say, ‘We need to go home and think about this,’ we know those people are taking it seriously,” Baier said.

oth the Key West and Marathon campuses of the Florida Keys SPCA are joining over 1,000 nationwide animal rescues during the fifth annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption drive Saturday, Aug. 17, in an effort to help local families adopt a new pet.

Pet adoption fees are waived, although standard adoption procedures and policies still apply. Interested adopters are encouraged to visit either of the FKSPCA locations ahead of the event to complete an adoption questionnaire as part of the pre-approval process.

FKSPCA’s goal is to adopt every animal it houses. At the Key West campus, a newly constructed facility on College Road, 196 animals are currently being cared for, including cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils.

Of the 78 animals at Marathon’s campus, most are cats of all ages, colors and personalities. However, 17 dogs are also looking for their forever home.

“This year is the first year we can host the Clear the Shelters event in our new, spacious facility in Key West. We are hopeful we attract more adopters to come out and find their next best friend,” said Tammy Fox, executive director of the FKSPCA. “Between our Key West and Marathon locations, we have 274 animals waiting for you to come and meet them. If you are thinking about bringing some love into your life and saving a life while you do so, now is the time,” Fox added.

In past years’ events, the two locations successfully adopted over 50 animals.

Since 2015, NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign has resulted in more than 256,000 pet adoptions.

Clear the Shelters is sponsored nationally by Cat’s Pride and Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

FIU GRAD SPECIALIZES IN CORAL REEFS Grandmother is one of more than 4,500 students earning degrees

C

indy Lewis, 63, a grandmother of three, went back to college to save coral reefs.

Lewis knew she wanted to study coral after a scuba diving trip to the Caribbean. She earned a master’s degree at age 48 and then, to be closer to the coral, she moved from New York to an old conch house in the Florida Keys.

At FIU, her research on the decline of pillar coral sparked a groundbreaking project: the creation of a metaphorical Noah’s Ark. Over 400 pieces of coral were collected and brought to the Keys Marine Laboratory, which led to new disease prevention methods. In 2017, Hurricane Irma almost derailed Lewis’ work when the backup generator failed. Without power, many coral died. Heartbroken, she headed home — only to find it, too, had been destroyed.

“Hurricane Irma brought me to my knees quite literally, but my amazing friends and family buoyed my spirits and gave me the strength to persevere,” Lewis said. “I knew I needed to grit my teeth and stay in the Keys, rebuild my home, and continue my work to save and restore the reefs I have grown to love.”

On July 29, Lewis graduated with a doctorate in biology from the College of Arts, Sciences & Education. She will continue to save coral as deputy director of the Keys Marine Laboratory.

Lewis joins more than 4,500 FIU students graduating this summer.

FIU held eight commencement ceremonies at its Ocean Bank Convocation Center, in Miami-Dade, to accommodate them all.

Lewis is also among 22 Worlds Ahead Graduates, recognized for excelling academically, succeeding despite obstacles, and using their education and experiences to make a difference.

“Cindy is a shining example of how learning is lifelong,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “She is like many of our students who are leveraging their talent, skills, education and passions to excel and make a difference.

NORTHERN SUMMER A bit of a July travelogue — Part 2

I

t’s nice to spend a bit of July in the more northerly latitudes … really nice! The temperature and humidity don’t ascend to Keys tropical JOHN heights, and it can BARTUS really actually cool is the mayor of down at night. the City of MaraThere are these thon. For those who missed last week’s output, Ann and Dick Harper, Key Colony Beach residents, spend summers in northern Vermont. Up there, they are active in promoting a summer concert series in a town called Highgate with the regional All Arts Council. When they invited me to play a concert in Vermont, it sounded like the perfect excuse to get off the rock for some cooler July weather.

Vermont is simply lovely. The state’s largest city, Burlington, feels like a small college town on the shores of a beautiful lake (Champlain). There are farms, quaint small towns, picturesque vistas, and some really nice craft beers. And Vermont is home to Ben & Jerry’s!

We stayed a couple of nights in St. Albans, right around the concert.

Their downtown has open air cafés and restaurants that offer really nice eats and drinks. Highgate, the concert town, is even smaller and “quainter” — just a few miles south of the border. I have to thank Ann and Dick Harper again, as well as the crew they hired to do sound (really nice, and they offered me a festival booking next year). Everything was going very well. A lot of the town showed up on that beautiful evening, the songs were flowing, and everyone was enjoying themselves … and then the strap came undone from my really nice Martin DC-Aura guitar, which followed gravity’s pull to land top down at my feet.

Everyone held their collective breath as I picked up the guitar, reinstalled the dislodged 9-volt battery in the preamp, and retuned it.

Thankfully, there was no damage to

the guitar, and the show went on! As I mentioned before, I was invited to play next year’s Dairy Festival, and hope for a return booking in Highgate as well. It’s the northern leg of the Perpetual Island Tour!

Grand Isle is one of the islands in the middle of Lake Champlain, and it is quiet and charming. Farms with roadside produce stands offer amazingly fresh and tasty berries, fruits and vegetables, and most places offer that amazing Real Vermont Maple Syrup.

Speaking of that sweet delicacy, one Vermont breakfast stop offered pancakes in Baby Bear, Mama Bear, and Papa Bear portions — one, two, or three pancakes. I was hungry (so I thought) and ordered the Papa Bear. What the waitress didn’t tell me was that the pancakes were huge. They literally were the size of dinner platters, and thick as well. I gave up. The waitress told me that she’d never seen anybody finish a Papa Bear.

A beautiful sunset cruise was spent on the Spirit of Ethan Allen, complete with a nice dinner, drinks, and gorgeous views of Lake Champlain, Burlington and the dueling mountain ranges of the Adirondacks on the New York side, and Vermont’s Green Mountains.

There was this little thought that kept surfacing in the back of my mind throughout this northern excursion: sure, it’s beautiful now, but I most assuredly wouldn’t want to be here in the winter months. Northern summers are quite wonderful, but give me these beautiful Keys winters for the rest of my life! *** My friend and musical partner Glenn Faast played his last gig in the Keys this past week before he and his wife Connie head to make a new life in North Carolina. Godspeed, and come back and visit a lot! *** There will be a memorial for Carmen Wade at Lazy Days in Marathon Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. Carmen was a wonderful spirit and a beautiful soul taken from us far too soon.
