irector Quentin Tarantino’s ninth — and most expensive — film to date, “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood,” opened last weekend to record crowds and divisive critical reception. Tarantino has a taste for bloody revenge and revisionist history and his latest offering is no exception. “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood,” takes on the sun-bleached summer of 1969 from the vantage of a fading Western star (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Brad Pitt). It started as an offshoot from the street sign painting volunteer program.

Local Stephen Sunday, who had previously spearheaded a beautification project in West Palm Beach, suggested that instead of just street signs, the city look to volunteers to help beautify on a larger scale.

“People take notice of those street signs every day,” said Mayor Teri Johnston, “and the reason the program worked so well is that the citizens are taking back control and helping their community. It’s just bottom-up change.”

Johnston, Sunday and city intern Zoe Jackson put their heads together to figure out who the right people might be to spot and address issues of aesthetics citywide.

“The first thing was to identify ‘doers’ in the community that we think could make a real impact,” said Mayor Johnston. Jackson reached out to those “doers,” about 20 community members, asking if they would be willing to identify “hot spots” that need beautification and then work as a team to address them. About half of those solicited have responded, so the committee of 10 will launch the beautification project. Participants are folks like Karen Ludwig-O’Leary, former tree commissioner and environmental activist behind the Facebook page “Save a Tree Key West,” who calls it an “honor” to be asked and that she’s “feeling really good about the future of Key West with a ‘green’ mayor at the helm.”

First up on the agenda? An Aug. 8 meeting will put the committee all in one room to voice ideas and concerns, and they’ll follow that up with a trolley ride around the city, to make note of eyesores or otherwise less-than-lovely spots around town.

“We are working with FDOT and the county on triangle beautification after the Cow Key Bridge construction,” said Johnston. “We’ve already got the pocket park down by the Custom

House in the budget. The revitalization of Duval Street is already in the works.

We have some incredible assets in the city of Key West.”

Sunday is also working with Jackson, a recent KWHS grad and student at Barnard, to get students of all ages involved.

“Just feeling like you’ve made a difference in your community impacts young people and makes them work harder to make it better,” said Jackson.

They won’t just need youth, though. Mayor Johnston said to keep ears and eyes open for a call to action.

After the initial assessment by the committee, the city will be seeking volunteers to help enact the plans of the beautification project.

MARINE HOSPITAL LASTED ALMOST A CENTURY KEY WEST HISTORY

When the Key West Marine Hospital opened on Aug. 2, 1845, the two-story 60-bed facility was one of eight Marine Hospitals designed by the early American architect Robert Mills. Among his other accomplishments, Mills would design the Washington Monument.

The hospital was constructed at the edge of the harbor, at what is today the corner of Emma and Front streets, and treated merchant marines and Navy sailors.

A wharf extended out into the harbor on the west side of the building.

Doctor William F. Cornick, a surgeon at the hospital in 1869, wrote about the facility, “The Hospital building is very much out of repair. The fences are old and broken down. With reference to the records, there is but one book and that a ‘Register of the Sick.’ … there is one steward, one matron, one cook, three attendants and one washerwoman.”

Perhaps the most infamous employee of the hospital was Carl Tanzer, an alleged radiology technician employed in the early 1930s who would fall in love with a young tuberculosis patient named Elena Hoyas, but that disturbing tale is one better left to Key West’s resident expert on these matters, David Sloan, to tell. The Marine Hospital would close the day after Valentine’s Day, on Feb. 15, 1943.

This weekend, Mall on Duval hosts “Mallory on Duval - After Sunset,” bringing Mallory Square buskers performing on Duval Street. There will be two shows a night for three nights in a row.

POSITIVE REPORT OVERALL OF TWO-DAY EVENT

M

ini-lobster season has become a notorious time of the year in the Keys, when locals groan about out-of-towners barreling down the Overseas Highway and dropping anchor with all the control of a pack of 6-year-olds on a sugar high. On the innocent end of things, tourists annoy us; on the more dangerous end, folks can hurt the fragile reef ecosystems or, even worse, themselves.

The good news is: this mini-season was more peaceful and less destructive than some years past. Officer Bobby Dube of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offered us a report on his experience on the water during mini-season, July 24 and 25.

“I worked both days,” he said, “and I worked our information booth preceding mini-season. There were a lot more people that stopped by than last year, and I’d like to draw the decline in arrests, etc. from that!”

Dube was posted up at Divers Direct in Key Largo. “I was there 10 hours a day: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. I don’t think I’ve been as hot,” he laughed.

Dube and others at FWC, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Coast Guard, the National Marine Sanctuary and many other entities worked together to ensure a safe and successful lobster season. Dube reported very few incidents and injuries.

The most serious incident reported by the Sheriff’s Office occurred July 25: An out-of-county man was struck by a boat prop on his leg/foot and was taken to Conch Key, then Mariners Hospital and then was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami. His injuries were not expected to be life-threatening. The Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the search for a missing diver near Spanish Harbor Bridge, but the driver was found safe shortly thereafter.

Dube attributed some of the success to good, clear weather and good visibility. “It let people spread out,” he said, “so they could go wherever they chose, to the bayside or oceanside. When the weather includes high winds and bad visibility, people tend to be by bridges and on top of each other, and that increases risk of accidents.”

There were a few incidents (see our “By the Numbers,” opposite page): a man who was illegally spearing snook (which are undersize and out of season) at Tom’s Harbor, a pair of brothers from Broward taken to jail for 12 undersize and over-limit lobsters, and a man who just couldn’t help himself but get started on lobstering on Tuesday before season opened.

“He started bully netting before midnight, and everyone was trying to warn him, but he didn’t listen,” Dube said, “and there was an officer right there among them.”

The funniest story? “We had a gentlemen that ended up going to jail in the Lower Keys, because there were officers pulling him over, and he tried to throw a bag of lobsters over.” The only problem?

“The bag was tied to a cleat on the vessel … so he went to jail.”

The biggest bust was of a boat that was 37 lobsters over the limit. Greed isn’t rewarded when it comes to mini-season!

Dube and FWC were glad there weren’t many arrests and no other serious injuries reported. All lost divers reported to FWC were located and boats in distress aided.

“No big lobster mobster stories,” said Dube. “It was a relatively safe two-day sport season for everyone down here.”

The life and line of designer Tracey Holst

hen Guyanese-born designer Tracey Holst first came to Key West in the mid ’80s, the journey was more return than arrival.

“It was so humid. I remember smelling guava and sapodilla; they were so ripe in the air. We turned on Frances Street, and I started to see the style of the houses. I got off the bike and burst into tears and thought, ‘I made it back home.’”

In the years since, Holst has left the island but always returned: once to earn a degree in marketing from NYU, a track she chose “because art history was full,” and again in the mid ’90s for a decadelong stint in Stuttgart, Germany with her husband, the photographer Alex Holst. When the couple returned to the island in 2004, they anticipated a short stay, planning to move to Miami. But the island, as it does, swayed them. “Key West is a very demanding mistress.

She holds onto your foot and makes you feel really good or really bad depending on her mood.

She doesn’t let go,” said Holst.

And sometimes, she demands a change.

A “soul screaming” moment at the half-century mark of life led Holst to establishing her clothing line, a career change she views as a creative culmination. “Everything I have done in my life, work-wise, has really prepared me for this because I understand fabrics, and structures, and prints, the look and feel and the emotions they invoke just by touching a piece of fabric.” Holst, a former fashion model, sharpened her aesthetic during her tenure in Europe, working as an art director and trend researcher. “A lot of times people know what they want, they can

see it visually but can’t communicate it verbally.” Holst developed a visual language that continues to speak to the women she dresses.

Her first trunk show, held at the Harrison Gallery, was a sold-out success. Holst followed suit with a succession of biannual shows, most recently at Stock Island’s Soul House. She plans to expand her shows to four a year and eventually bring her designs to a storefront.

Holst’s pieces are rooted in sustainability and timelessness.

“I want these pieces that I create to accentuate whatever the look is that you have. I don’t want it to ever go out of style.” She demands a certain measure of swagger from her clients. “That’s a part of my line – you have to be strong and confident to wear it.”

Holst finds inspiration in African fabrics like those manufactured by Vlisco. “They’re bold, they’re in your face, they’re telling a story.” Part of that story is how the prints came to be; inspired by Africa and manufactured in the Netherlands using Indonesian techniques, the fabrics were sold throughout Africa by legendary saleswomen known as “Mama Benzes”. The prints made their way to the States, where they became a part of the fabric of the American Civil Rights movement and eventually to the Caribbean where leaders seeking independence from Colonial powers adopted the prints as declarations of autonomy. The historical significance and arresting look made an indelible impression on Holst. “Finally you had a choice in how bold you were, how feminine. The prints you wore could be you. You didn’t have to buy white cotton or polka dots.

You could stand up and stand out.”

Different Cloth Standing up and standing out are heirloom qualities for Holst, whose maternal grandmother was Guyana’s first-ever female mayor, a member of parliament and one of the nation’s first divorcées. “When she walked and moved, you saw it, you felt it,” said Holst. Her grandmother was also an accomplished seamstress, a thread that further ties the two. “These women whose shoulders I directly stand on, the bloodline that’s within me that has allowed me to be here now living my dreams is pretty strong.”

Strength resonates for Holst, whose tagline is Cloth & Steel, a representation of the industrial elements of her husband’s work, which includes jewelry and furniture in addition to photography, and the feminine tactility of her own. Frequent collaborators, the couple is transitioning their home to facilitate a studio space for both. How have the two creatives made it work for over two and a half decades? “We have a deep admiration for each other. AMBASSADORS LEARN HOW KEY WEST RUNS

W

here do tax dollars actually go once we’ve paid them? How does such a small island handle its wastewater and storm water? Who paints the street signs? What does the Public Works Department do?

These are just a few of questions answered in the Key West Ambassador Academy, a program that has initiated and educated some of Key West’s most prominent and diverse residents.

Class 32 of the academy is in the middle of the curriculum, having kicked off class July 11 (they’ll wrap up on Oct. 23).

The Ambassadors program first convened in 2003. Public Information Officer Alyson Crean and a team of volunteer facilitators now help coordinate the 13-week program. During the weekly sessions, representatives of various city departments meet with the group to give an in-depth understanding of the workings of city government.

“We’ve had a number of people that have been elected to office that have been through it,” said Crean.

A bit of history: In 2003, Julio Aveal was city manager, and he contracted with an outside company to run the program. Dave Oatway was the primary volunteer running and coordinating it. Several years later, it was moved in-house.

“Back then, the Eco-Discovery Center was kind enough to provide a location, and now that we have City Hall, we have a place to coordinate it internally,” said Crean, who started working for the city in 2008, after working in journalism as bureau chief of the Keynoter and editor of Solaris Hill. “At first, I supported Dave and then took it over in 2010.”

“Over 600 people have participated in the program over the years,” Crean said. The current class is an all-star crew of Key West citizens. “We currently have someone from the school administration, several business owners, service industry people, journalists, folks with different and very impressive backgrounds.

In our last class, we had a professional juggler who had worked at Mallory Square for 35 years.”

The list of graduates of the program looks like a “who’s who” of Key West that includes city and county commissioners, CEOs and directors of several not-for-profit organizations.

“The Ambassadors program works under the concept that an educated citizenry is the bedrock of a well-functioning democracy,” said Crean.

Several notable alumni from recent years stand out. “One person is Sue Harrison, who retired as senior deputy city clerk, and she wanted an outside view of other departments.”

The volunteer facilitators are also former Ambassadors themselves who boast impressive resumes — and continue to serve Key West in various capacities.

“Stuart Strickland just got a commendation from the city for repainting street signs,” said Crean. “John Teets is one of the facilitators, and he was an editor for The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. Lois Songer is an artist and owned Impossible Things bead shop.

She is affiliated with the Art Center, the Frangipani Gallery and the arts and crafts fairs on Whitehead Street.”

The program sounds like the coolest interactive school imaginable. It kicks off with a personal session with local historian — ahem, legend — Tom Hambright.

“It’s fun to have history right at the beginning, because some people have been here their whole life, and we also even have had people who just moved here the week before.”

This is unusual, but the person in question was very persuasive, Crean said.

They have field trips to places like KOTs, the transit center on Stock Island, The Truman Waterfront and Cozumel Park. They even get to have a roundtable discussion with the commissioners, asking questions and voicing concerns.

“That’s a fabulous opportunity, and I think the commissioners enjoy it too, because they get to answer questions instead of just address agenda items,” said Crean.

“I get so much joy out of the interactions with each class, and it’s such a positive experience,” said Crean. “There’s nothing as rewarding as people after the program saying, ‘We had no idea how hard city staff work, and all that they do.”

“There is nothing like this program for the city government to show what we do,” she said.

“We want them to know: you can call the parking guy, you can call the public works department. We are civil servants.”

The most recent Thursday, the Ambassadors visited the Naval Air Station and met with new Commander Capt. Mark Sohaney. We can only assume they were learning how to fly — metaphorically or otherwise.

KILLING CANCER WITH KEY LIMES

T

he Key lime is usually celebrated in pie form in the Florida Keys, and though many Americans can justify 440 calories, 22 grams of fat and 42 grams of sugar to get 14% of their David Sloan recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, you would be hard pressed to find a doctor who encourages the tart and sweet treat for health purposes. But take away the sugars, fats and starches, and our glorious little Key lime fruit may be the key to stopping certain types of cancer dead in their tracks.

Key limes (citrus aurantifolia) are sometimes called “vitamin-sea” in a nod to the sailors who carried limes on their voyages in an effort to prevent scurvy. Scurvy was often fatal, but the link between vitamin C deficiencies and scurvy eluded seamen for centuries.

Even as citrus became an accepted scurvy prevention, people were not certain why it worked, but they knew it did. By the late 1800s, sponge fishermen in the Florida Keys knew the importance of citrus and dairy for good health. In fact, their combination of the two ingredients is believed to have created one of the earliest versions of Key lime pie.

It is a safe bet that the spongers had no idea they were fighting cancer at the same time.

According to a 2016 paper, “Anticancer Activity of Key Lime,” published in the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine, the Key lime holds great potential for treatment of breast cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and lymphoma. Other studies suggest it may fight lung and liver cancer too. The cancer-fighting properties come from phytochemical substances in the limes, including alkaloids, cartenoids, coumarins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and triterpenoids. The report cites 62 volatile compounds and is fairly thorough in detailing the cancer strains tested, exposure rates, volatile compound percentages and effectiveness of treatment. It is important to understand that the tests proving the Key lime’s ability to cure cancer took place in a petri dish and not in humans, so don’t forgo your chemo treatments in favor of a Key lime mojito drip. Instead, consider that citrus aurantifolia comes with many health benefits, so keep a bag of Key limes around your house, and make an effort to introduce them to your diet several times a day. Put a little Key lime juice in every glass of water you drink, squeeze fresh lime on a sliced avocado, salads and fish, keep a zester handy and try Key lime zest as a salt replacement, and include a little Key lime juice in your 5 o’clock somewhere beverage of choice. I guarantee it will add a burst of Florida Keys flavor to your life no matter where you are, and it just might give any developing cancer cells an eviction notice.

E-CIGARETTES & YOUTH f you’ve been out and about as I have, you’re likely used to seeing them everywhere.

All shapes Dr. Stanley Sack and sizes, clouds of mist emanating from them. And while “vaping” might not be as irritating to non-smoking noses as conventional cigarettes, there is a lot left to learn about what’s in that cloud and what it could do to our bodies.

What’s more, vaping and ecigarettes — collectively known as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) — seem to have found their niche market: our youth. Since 2014, electronic cigarettes have overtaken conventional ones as the nicotine fix of choice among adolescents. More locally concerning is the preponderance of youth vaping in Monroe County, which is above the national average. Perhaps it’s just a little too easy to get here.

Although few of us as teens want to do anything that hints at becoming our parents, smoking seems to be the exception; it’s just been updated. The companies that push this stuff seem to know also how to push the buttons of what appears to be their target audience.

Certainly, the flavored products are a big draw — they’re sometimes packaged to look like, say, candy.

I’m sure the “new tech” thing is appealing, and I’ve even read that due to resemblance of the devices to other objects such as pens and flash drives, they’re so easy to hide, that in some places, they’re even being used in classrooms. Regardless of whether or not the devices are specifically aimed at youth, this is not big tobacco’s first marketing rodeo; they know how to get the word out there.

Where youth is concerned, there are lots of problems with this. First, nicotine has been shown to be harmful to the developing

adolescent brain. Many ENDS have lots more nicotine than conventional cigarettes. Although vaping doesn’t expose the body to as many other chemicals as regular cigarettes, the exposure is not zero, and the vapor has been shown to contain carcinogens and chemicals that can harm unborn children.

Even the flavorings are being looked at for harmful effects when inhaled. Bystanders can inhale the nicotine of second-hand vapor, something that is certainly a risk for non-vaping teen contacts of users.

Finally, many who start vaping as teens will go on to smoke regular cigarettes as adults.

In the extreme, this phenomenon has had some tragic consequences for teens. Stories abound of promising athletic careers stopped in their tracks due to vaping. And although rare, the phenomenon has literally blown up in people’s faces due to devices exploding.

So … what are we doing about all this? Although there is a lot of legal wrangling, the FDA has become involved in the regulation of ENDS. Many states have raised the legal age to 21, and some are looking to ban flavored products. Although not specifically youth-related, Florida has banned vaping and e-cigarette use in the workplace as of July 1. Florida does tend to be in the middle of the pack, so to speak, on a lot of issues, and one can only hope that the legislation specific to youth will eventually arrive here.

Until that time, we have the timeworn solutions: communicate with your teen, set a good example by not indulging yourself, and use all the resources that are out there (and there are several in the Keys) if you do have a nicotine-addicted teen.

COURTS HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN COMBATING OPIOID USE DISORDER

n April 24, Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady issued a proclamation declaring July 2019 to be Opioid Awareness Month within the state court system. Chief Justice Canady stated: “It is incumbent upon judges and court staff members, particularly those serving in problemsolving courts and family courts, to understand the basics of addiction and its impact on the brain, the standard for treatment of opioid use disorder, and legal implications and court responses to individuals with this disorder.”

The need for education and awareness is clear; Florida is experiencing an opioid crisis. We know that this epidemic is more than a public health issue. The courts have a frontline view of the devastating impact that the opioid epidemic is having on our state, destroying futures and families. At some point, most people with opioid use disorder end up in court. Perhaps they have been arrested for stealing to feed their habit or been deemed unfit parents. Whatever the reason, the justice system is now the primary referral source for addiction treatment in the country. Whether in a criminal court, family court or problem-solving court, the courts have a role in combating this crisis, ensuring that people with opioid use disorder get the treatment they need.

To provide more treatment in the justice system, federal and state opioid task force groups have

recommended more problem-solving courts. The Sixteenth Judicial Circuit is fortunate to have a drug court, a problem-solving court for dependency, juvenile delinquency and criminal proceedings. These courts link participants with treatment and provide court oversight with treatment and recovery teams.

The court and team members are dedicated to crafting responses and solutions that are required to combat this serious and complicated epidemic.

Currently, the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder combines medication with behavioral therapies. Aside from the clinical effectiveness of medicationassisted treatment, it also allows for patients to regain a sense of normalcy and functionality in their lives by often decreasing criminal activity associated with substance use disorders, increases the ability to secure and maintain employment, and even improves birth outcomes for women who have opioid use disorder while pregnant.

The courts are working to combat Florida’s opioid crisis. When court-involved citizens have access to effective treatment, it stops the cycle of criminal activity and the destruction of families. Rescue shows need for marine mammal hospital

T

wo Atlantic bottlenose dolphins were rescued off the shallow waters of Fiesta Key Campground and Marina at MM 70 on July 26. With the dolphins now in longterm care, the organization that helped save them continues its work to develop a marine mammal hospital.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) notified Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder of the situation involving the two dolphins.

“Seeing these two stranded dolphins struggling on their sides to just gasp a single breath of air devastated me. After righting the weaker of the two first and moving them both together into deeper water, it was sad to see that neither could stay upright without assistance.” says Capt. Matt Bellinger, who was on-site assisting in the rescue. “The reality was that both dolphins would’ve drowned on the incoming tide and it horrified me. I was relieved to see the arrival of the DPMMR crew and medical staff; there was hope for these magnificent beings.”

After two unsuccessful release attempts, medical evaluation by veterinarian Dr. Jillian Schwartz, and consultation with the NMFS, it was determined that both animals needed longterm rehabilitation to survive. DPMMR does not yet have the facilities necessary to offer such rehabilitative care, so the two animals were transferred to the only place in the state that had the capability to take on their rehabilitation: SeaWorld.

SeaWorld has rescued over 35,000 animals, including

an impressive 533 whales and dolphins. Here, the two dolphins will receive world-class veterinary care in a behind-the-scenes area for as long as it takes to make a full recovery.

The ultimate goal is for the two to be released back into Florida Keys waters, which depends on both the success of the rehabilitation and the NMFS, the governing agency that determines if an animal is ready for release, and if the animals are deemed non-releasable it will make the decision on where the animals should be placed.

"If it wasn't for SeaWorld, these animals would have had to be euthanized. We were really grateful for their partnership in this rescue and their willingness to support these dolphins’ rehabilitation." said Nancy Cooper, president of DPMMR. "As it stands right now, there is no facility authorized by the NMFS to carry out dolphin rehabilitation in the Florida Keys. However, we're working hard behind the scenes to obtain the funding to create a facility so that when these strand-

ings happen, the animals can undergo rehabilitation in their Keys home."

Cooper said DPMMR has secured a 2-acre plot in Key Largo to be used for rehabilitation facilities, but in order to become licensed by the NMFS to carry out any long-term rehabilitation, special facilities will need to be developed.

These include quarantine pools, filtration systems, sea pens and support areas (fish preparation, medical room and office space).

The initial development will cost around $2 million. Approximately $35,000 of this was raised at the organization's first “Connect to Protect” gala in May, but that still leaves a hefty amount to be raised.

“This stranding further reinforces the fact that we need a marine mammal hospital in the Keys," said Hunter Kinney, assistant director of development. "The only way to develop such a facility, however, is going to be through connecting with the people who want to financially support the hospital’s development.”

Kinney said they are actively working toward finding such a donor, but in the interim are accepting any donations to the cause, including in-kind services.

ENTHUSIASTS WANT A GLIMPSE OF THE ANTILLEAN PALM-SWIFT

B

y 8 a.m. on July 23, only a handful of birders were still milling around the intersection of Peachtree and Morton streets on Grassy Key. Earlier the same morning there were twice that many. The area has been a hotspot since July 15, when Shirley Wilkerson posted a sighting of the Antillean Palm-Swift on Grassy Key to ebird. org. The announcement went viral.

According to the same website, it’s a “mega rarity” — last spotted 47 years ago at the Key West Cemetery.

Because of its special status, the bird has attracted bird watchers from around the Keys and around the country.

“I traveled to Grassy Key to see this rare bird because it’s on my ‘life bird list,’” said Ken Walsh of Philadelphia, a member of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club and dedicated birder for the past 45 years.

What’s a life bird list? Well, it’s like a bucket list, but for birders.

Nicole Koeltzow arrived on Grassy Key wearing a shirt blazoned with “Got 700?” She said the slogan refers to the number of birds she has identified on her own bird list. (Wow!) The Washington native said she was a participant in the World Series of Birding.

“One of the cool things about watching birds is that there is no guarantee you’re going to see what you came for,” said Walsh, adding that there is no telling what other species you might see while waiting for that special bird to arrive.

Paul Waller also reported the sighting on Grassy Key on Facebook, identifying it as a “Code 5” rarity, which means, accord-

ing to the American Birding Association, a “species recorded five or fewer times in the ABA Checklist Area, or fewer than three records in the past 30 years.”

That’s pretty rare.

Mark Hedden, executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society, said it was enough to make the drive from Key West to the Middle Keys.

“Chasing rarities isn’t really my thing… but it’s in the Keys. How can I not go look for it?”

Hedden said there are two things that make a bird special — it’s either somewhere it’s “not supposed” to be, or it is endangered. In the case of the Antillean Palm-Swift, it’s the former.

“This one probably came from Cuba or Jamaica or the Bahamas. I’ve seen this species in Cuba,” he said. “But every once in a while, a bird gets a wild hair and goes somewhere else. It’s the same mechanism that fuels evolution. There’s always an individual that likes to wander, and that’s when species separation happens.

That’s why we have 10,000 species of birds. Of course, that takes 4,000 years to happen, so this sighting on Grassy Key is a small version of that process.”

U.S. birders like the chance to spot a bird not normally found in the contiguous United States. Ray Sharpton drove all the way from New York to see the Antillean Palm-Swift. He quickly bonded with the other birders on Grassy Key. As a group, they are encouraging others to take up the hobby. They said it requires interest, patience and binoculars.

“And a copy of the ‘Sibley Field Guide to Birds,’” Sharpton said.

STUDY REVEALS KEY CONTRIBUTOR TO CORAL HEALTH PROBLEM

E

nvironmental stressors like warming water temperatures are contributing to massive coral death, scientists say. But a recent study with three decades of data collected from Looe Key Reef is revealing another serious problem — land-based nutrient runoff.

Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area is about 5.5 nautical miles south of Ramrod Key, about 8 nautical miles southwest of Bahia Honda State Park.

Data within the study, published in the international journal Marine Biology, shows living coral cover at Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area went from nearly 33 percent in 1984 to less than 6 percent in 2008. And while the annual rate of coral loss varied during the study, it increased between 1985-87 and 1996-99 following periods of heavy rainfall and increased water deliveries from the Everglades.

Between 1991-95, the study shows significant increases in Everglades runoff and heavy rainfall resulted in increases of reactive nitrogen, which cause biodiversity loss, at Looe Key. Phytoplankton levels for offshore reefs are also high as evidenced by the presence of macroalgae and harmful algal blooms due to excessive nutrients. The issue? Nutrient-enriched runoff, from improperly treated sewage and

fertilizers to topsoil, are increasing nitrogen levels. That’s causing phosphorus starvation in the corals and reducing their temperature threshold for bleaching.

“Our results provide compelling evidence that nitrogen loading from the Florida Keys and greater Everglades ecosystem caused by humans, rather than warming temperatures, is the primary driver of coral reef degradation at Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area during our long-term study,” said Brian Lapointe, senior author and a research professor at FAU’s Harbor Branch.

According to the study, nitrogen loading to the coast is predicted to increase by 19 percent globally from changes in rainfall due to climate change. Management actions are urgent and needed to prevent further degradation, and Lapointe said there are initiatives people can take about the nitrogen problem such as reducing fertilizer inputs, and at a larger level, increasing storage and treatment of storm water on the Florida mainland.

Andy Bruckner, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary research coordinator, said the study highlights the role nutrients play in the health of Florida’s reefs. However, he said it’s important to note that nutrients aren’t the only factor responsible for the decline. Climate change is also posing significant stress on reefs worldwide.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is working to address the severe coral disease outbreak throughout the Florida Reef Tract through a number of measures. In about three weeks, Andy Bruckner, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary research coordinator, says the sanctuary will release the “restoration blueprint for public comment.”

This plan includes a variety of alternatives to help reduce impacts to the sanctuary and improve protection to sanctuary resources, and it includes a number of management actions designed to restore coral reefs and other habitats.

“The major losses of coral to the sanctuary reefs is due to bleaching and disease, and both of these threats have occurred throughout the region in both areas affected by nutrient inputs as well as remote locations with no nutrient impacts,” he said. “We know elevated nitrogen can affect the symbiosis corals have with algae, and it can result in bleaching, but the recent large scale bleaching events (1997-98 and 2014-16) were global in extent. These resulted in large die-offs of coral both in areas with and without nitrogen input.”

The study also notes how improvements at sewage treatment plants are helping mitigate local land-based nitrogen contributions. Plants service 76,000 yearround residents and millions of visitors annually.

Bruckner says the Florida Keys have taken the first step by eliminating septic tanks and connecting houses and businesses to sewage treatment. But until nutrients from agriculture runoff, and runoff from Lake Okeechobee, are reduced, there will continue to be elevated nutrients reaching the Keys.

“The second larger source of nutrients is Florida Bay water and water carried from the west coast of Florida to the Keys,” he said. “This can be partially addressed through the proposed Everglades restoration.”

RAMPING UP RESTORATION NEW TECHNIQUES ROLLED OUT TO BRING BACK REEFS

I

n the face of the crisis confronting our planet’s coral reefs, Coral Restoration Foundation is rolling out new techniques to restore them more quickly.

The foundation is on the front lines of the world’s fight to save and restore our coral reefs. Managing the biggest coral tree nurseries in the world, the foundation is able to grow more than 44,000 “reef-ready” corals every year. It is now developing ways of getting more, larger corals onto the reef to restore the habitat more quickly.

This “novel outplanting” project is being conducted under permits from the Florida National Marine Sanctuary. The trials are taking place on sites that might be visited by recreational divers. Coral Restoration Foundation is asking for people to know what to look for so they don’t mistake the materials for marine debris.

With support from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), the foundation has begun to experiment with novel outplanting techniques for the staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, that would allow the organization to restore Florida’s reefs more quickly.

This species is not affected by the stony coral tissue loss disease that is currently threatening other corals on the reef.

The new techniques have been under development for the past year and are now being deployed at specific restoration sites in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. By year’s end, the foundation plans to return up to 14,000 ecologically relevant, and critically endangered, colonies to five reef sites in the Florida Keys, taking advantage of the increase in outplanting efficiency that the novel techniques allow.

Alex Neufeld, Coral Restoration Foundation special projects coordinator, is helping to spearhead the project.

“These novel techniques represent the next evolution in the Coral Restoration Foundation model — one that will allow us to begin returning critically endangered corals to the reef at a scale that is immediately relevant from an ecological perspective,” he said. “By outplanting large, mature colonies, we are

not only introducing structural and biological complexity to the reefs very quickly, but we are also accelerating the reefs’ natural process of recovery via sexual reproduction of corals.”

Jessica Levy, the foundation’s restoration program manager, said, “This is also a timely development for us as we move deeper into the summer months and hurricane season. Getting larger corals off the trees means that we will be able to avoid a lot of potential issues associated with warmer summer waters and overcrowding in the nurseries.

Smaller corals on the trees are also less likely to be lost if a big storm rolls through.”

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS Sharing information with, and learning from, other restoration practitioners are central to the work of Coral Restoration Foundation. These novel methods use sustainable materials that degrade over time, including bamboo and hemp rope, and represent techniques that have not yet been used in the Florida Keys, but draw on concepts pioneered by other groups around the world.

A ‘LIVING LABORATORY,’ NOT MARINE DEBRIS These new outplanting methods are getting trials at Carysfort, Horseshoe Reef, Conch Reef, and Pickles Reef. These are sites that are regularly visited by recreational divers and snorkelers. Coral Restoration Foundation is urging ocean lovers to be aware of the project so that visitors to these “living laboratories” know not to try to remove the materials.

RAMPING UP IN 2020 Through 2019, Coral Restoration Foundation will monitor the corals outplanted in this project to better understand which techniques are most successful. As these new techniques are tried and validated, the organization will be looking to pursue an expansion of the project in 2020, incorporating them into their core practice, replacing traditional outplant methods.

T

hough it’s obscured by a friendlier new logo, a recent poster for National Night Out still carried the old trademarked tagline, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” a slogan it held until last year. Recognizing changing times and evolving relationships, the national event changed its tagline for 2019. The focus now falls simply on “police and community partnerships.” The event is held in communities throughout the United States on the first Tuesday of August.

As a sort of roving “open house,” the program strives to introduce local communities to their first responders through a night of hometown fun. On Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Key West Police Department (KWPD) and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) will fill Bayview Park with police horses and dogs, special equipment from the fire department, military and first response teams, and plenty of friendly personnel ready to greet the community. Police officers, firefighters, military teams and special units will be on hand to greet visitors, answer questions and explain their roles in the community. Visiting animals from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Farm, and music with a live DJ stream from 92.7 round out the festive atmosphere.

The night is bigger than a block party and pertains to something more important than just a chance to play with some very cool toys (including fire trucks and tactical dive gear). The first National Night Out took place in August 1984 in 400 communities across 23 states. The roots of the event had started 14 years prior when a Community Watch volunteer near Philadelphia recognized the lack of a shared platform for police departments and their community partners.

National Night Out eventually expanded to thousands of communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories and international military bases. Over the years, the tone has shifted, morphing from an extension of Neighborhood Watch, which placed emphasis on vigilance, safety and a protective response, to its current iteration as a celebratory communityfocused gathering. As communities evaluate their relationships to local law enforcement, forward-thinking police departments like Key West’s are actively working to solidify community connections.

National Night Out gives neighbors and police officers an opportunity to meet one another under positive circumstances. Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg stresses the importance of forming those relationships under good conditions.

“My slogan is: ‘Get to know us before you need us,’” said Brandenburg. The intent of events like National Night Out is to create awareness of the available services and assets in any given community. If community members are at least passingly familiar with local programs, they’ll be more inclined to be able to seek the help they need, when they need it most.”

Key West is fortunate to count quite a few notable community partners in its sphere. The local version of National Night Out highlights groups ranging from Navy tactical teams and the FBI to officials from Pepsi, who will be on hand to pass out refreshments on a hot August night. City of Key West Communications Manager Alyson Crean said there are currently 24 community partners scheduled to be on hand at the park that night, but that the number is increasing every day.

Bayview Park provides the ideal central location for the festivities. Residents throughout Old Town, Midtown and Bahama Village can walk or bike over to the park. New Town residents will find plenty of parking around the park and surrounding neighborhoods, or can catch a city bus to the party. On Aug. 6, everyone in Key West is a neighbor and everyone is welcome to converge for conversation, treats and a chance to play with some really great toys.

What do you hope people take away from National Night Out? That feeling of community. If there’s anything we can do to get us all talking to one another, it can only benefit all of us. Whether you need to know the bus routes or report a crime or know the proper way to recycle, you can learn all of it right here at Bayview Park.

Are there other ongoing community-building efforts in Key West?

Absolutely. We just had Mango Fest a couple weeks ago with the Police Athletic League. That was huge. Coffee with a Cop — our friends at Starbucks helped us with that. We were at Starbucks here on the boulevard with 20-some officers, horses, dogs. People were able to come out with questions or just to say, “Hi.” We’ve also partnered with Publix for the Torch Run and other Special Olympics events. There’s always a lot going on. A couple weeks ago, I ran the PAL 5K, went to the Special Olympics paddle-boarding event, and then to Mango Fest — all in one day. Anything and everything I can do to promote a better relationship with the police department and the public, I will do it.

Do you have any personal philosophies, on the nature of community building, that you’ve brought to your role as chief?

My slogan is “Get to know us before you need us.” That’s very important because people don’t act themselves in a time of crisis. Whether that crisis is a traffic crash, a traffic stop, their house is burglarized. If we don’t know how you normally are, we may not have the tools to talk you down or best serve you. I think it’s important to know each other before we get to that point.

It feels like our community has a particularly strong relationship to its police force.

What can other communities learn from Key West?

I think we do a good job at community policing. There are schools that have come down during Fantasy Fest to see how we deal with the public.

Officers from out of town come in, and they’re impressed with how our officers deal with problems quickly and efficiently. We’re very good at picking out the problems in a crowd — because we do it so frequently — and making it a safe event for everybody. If I’m on Duval Street, and I have a problem, I’ll look up and see people I know, and I’ll know who I can count on. I see the community members, and I know who I can count on if I need it.

What’s one thing you wish the general public knew about the KWPD? We’re human beings. People forget that. We’ll sit down to eat somewhere and people come up to us and say, “I can’t believe you’re eating.” (laughs) We breathe, we bleed, we eat, we get sick, we have feelings. That gets lost sometimes, I think.

We’re not just the police. We’re part of the community.

T

he utility of Angela Carnoske’s cheekily-named KINK(Y) Wine Rubber is evidenced in the first two minutes that we meet.

We are at Wine-O on Duval Street, the perfect setting to talk all things graperelated, and our server can hardly get the cork out of a bottle. In her defense, the cork had become brittle and nearly impossible to remove. Angela handed her the small, sunflower-shaped silicone wine tool and—voila!—the cork was out, and intact.

The invention is pretty, practical and unassuming. But I wondered: why a “wine rubber,” rather than a more traditional corking device?

“I had a dream about it, honestly, but I don’t want to sound like a crazy person,” says Carnoske. She doesn’t sound crazy. She sounds focused and resolute when she talks about the journey, which was also a literal one.

Recovering from serious lung surgery, Carnoske was told that the resultant scar tissue would restrict her movement, meaning she would no longer be able to endure the long hours on foot required in the service industry — the industry to which she had committed most of her life. Instead of taking it easy, Carnoske decided to take a walk.

A very long walk.

She embarked on the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage that spans some 500 miles across Northern Spain. While there, she also visited Spanish wine country, giving her the time and inspiration to consider how she would spend the rest of her life, if not working in the bar and restaurant world.

“During the whole Spain trip, I thought: What am I going to do with my life? I knew I couldn’t physically work that hard, and I thought of something in my industry that I love: something wine-related,” she said. “And I meditated on that.”

Carnoske eventually founded Vinum Dea (“Wine Goddess”), a company under which she is launching KINK(Y) Wine Rubbers and, she promises, more inventions to come. Carnoske has ready inspiration: she can be found behind the bar several nights a week at Uva Wine Bar, has her level 1 sommelier certification and teaches classes through Wineology Key West. She’s loved teaching and seeing how wine knowledge empowers people in the dining world.

“It’s great when you can order something with a little education behind it, not just the first thing that you recognize. A friend of mine who had taken my wine class once called me from the bathroom and thanked me for teaching her, because her husband’s boss had given her the wine list to order for them at dinner, and she ordered for the table … well, like a boss!”

As an extension of her own ongoing education, Carnoske began to investigate where there were needs in the wine world. She said that she noticed pump seals often leak and wine-lovers at home don’t necessarily want to spring for a cordovan.

So, she had the idea (or dream) of the wine rubber: something flexible and lightweight, affordable and attractive that one could place under the cork and create an airtight seal. She established her LLC almost exactly two years ago. The only trouble was: she had to make the thing.

“People have great ideas all the time,” Carnoske said, “and then they don’t have the courage to follow through.” She decided not to be one of those people. “Since then, it’s been two years of tedious work: learning how to pour and mix silicone in my house. I would get home from work and get on YouTube and look at how to mix clay, and I ordered a vacuum pump.”

Carnoske credits the ability to allow the right things and people to come her way with her project’s acceleration.

“Every step of the way, someone that has knowledge has come across my path.” First, at her job at Latitudes, she mentioned the project to a coworker, who turned out to be experienced with latex and silicone, making masks for Fantasy Fest. He came over and helped her make her first one.

Once she had created the sunflowershaped prototype — inspired by the beauty of the Spanish countryside — the wine rubber was on its way.

Not long after, an inventor at Procter and Gamble came across her path, encouraged her invention and set her up with a patent attorney. Further along the way, she realized that she couldn’t make them by hand and would need molds. Visiting a friend in Denver, she walked into a 3D printing store and “fell in love with the staff. They were so sweet and knew exactly what I needed.”

They created the mold for her and enabled her to make perfectly symmetrical KINK(Y) wine rubbers.

She met another customer at the shop who was able to help her make the connection with a manufacturer.

His company acts as a middleman between companies and manufacturers in China.

“I had to go that route,” she said, “because U.S. manufacturers wouldn’t touch the project if it was less than 250,000 units, and for me as a startup, that was impossible.”

She said the manufacturer took her on in “good faith.”

“My first order is 10,000 units, and they are in two-packs, so I’ll be selling 5,000 packs.”

She is fulfilling orders through Amazon and selling them locally at Uva Wine Shop, the Roost and Salt Gallery.

The rubbers don’t just work to remove corks and function as seals: they are also handy coasters that don’t stick to a cold drink and can hang from the top of a bottle by the ring in their container. They come in two colors, light and dark blue, which Carnoske said reminds her of the Keys water.

“They’ll also say: ‘Designed in Key West.’”

They’re certainly useful.

But why KINK(Y)? “Because you’re putting a kink in your wine and waiting for later,” she says. Others have had more mischievous ideas for the invention.

“Okay,” she laughs, “they kind of look like nipple covers.

If all else fails, they will be on sale at Fantasy Fest!”

They might just serve as the best of both worlds.

Carnoske is launching her invention on Tuesday, Aug. 6, locally, when she’ll have KINK(Y) wine rubbers at a discount (normally $12.99 for a two pack; there, two for $20), and she’s not done innovating for the wine world.

“I will have other inventions coming from Vinum Dea,” she promises.

We’ll keep up our end of the bargain too — and keep drinking wine.

REPORTING FOR DUTY FUTURE USS BILLINGS SET FOR KEY WEST COMMISSIONING

T

he Navy’s newest Freedom variant littoral combat ship, the future USS Billings (LCS 15), will be commissioned Saturday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. at Naval Air Station Key West. This event is open to the public, but tickets are required.

U.S. Senator Jon Tester of Montana will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. His wife, Sharla Tester, will serve as the ship’s sponsor. As part of a time-honored Navy tradition during the ceremony, Mrs. Tester will give the first order to “man our ship and bring her to life!”

Billings is the first ship named in honor of Montana’s largest city. It is the 17th littoral combat ship to enter the fleet and the eighth of the Freedom variant. Billings will be homeported at Naval Base Mayport in Florida.

Cmdr. Nathan Rowan, a native of Tennessee, is the ship’s commanding officer and leads the core crew of 70 officers and enlisted personnel.

Lockheed Martin/Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard built the 3,450-ton ship in Marinette, Wisconsin. The ship is 387 feet long, has a beam of nearly 58 feet, and has a speed of more than 40 knots.

The littoral combat ship class is a fast, agile, missionfocused platform designed to operate in near-shore environments, while capable of open-ocean tasking and winning against 21st-century coastal threats such as submarines, mines, and swarming small craft. They are capable of supporting forward presence, maritime security, sea control and deterrence.

What is something that you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? High school is not as easy as everyone thinks it is.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS? I play baseball, I’m a leader in Fellowship for Christian Athletes and a member of Executive Board. Each of these organizations/activities represents a part of me (faith, baseball, leadership).

What are your plans after high school? I will be attending Boston College on a baseball scholarship.
