obster mini-season is upon us, and with it a deluge of tourists and locals heading to the high (and shallow) seas in pursuit of the spiny tailed and tickle-enticed Panulirus Argus. While debate continues as to whether this annual crustacean culling is a harvest of the ocean’s bounty or the pillage of a natural resource, we asked local lobster catchers and eaters:

he Monroe County School Board met on July 23 to discuss a proposed bus facility on 5th Street and 3rd Ave on Stock Island. The project is estimated by Ajax Construction Company to cost $13.9 million.

Virginia Panico penned a letter to the school board, reasoning that the Stock Island location would be better used for workforce housing.

“As I know you are aware, the issue of workforce housing is dire and losing what could be a great residential area to a solely commercial/industrial endeavor seems shortsighted at best,” the letter stated. The chamber proposed an alternate location on Rockland Key as more suitable for rotating buses.

HOMESTEAD IN NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT REP. MUCARSEL-POWELL CHAMPIONS HUMANE STANDARDS IN DETENTION CENTERS

he hottest topic on the Hill, and in Homestead, in recent weeks has been the conditions at immigrant detention centers. Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has been one of the most vocal challengers to the conditions in immigration facilities, particularly the Homestead Detention Facility, which is in District 26. The Weekly has reported on the controversy surrounding the center, operated by parent company Caliburn, including reports from Minister Gigi Delgado of Hope 4 Life, who has volunteered in the facility, calling it a “protection center” rather than a “detention center” and lauding its humane conditions. Others, including protesters and lawmakers, disagree.

Mucarsel-Powell, who arrived in the U.S. as an immigrant from Ecuador at 14, has visited the center some half-dozen times. She also invited Democratic presidential hopefuls to visit the facility, following the June 26 and 27 debates in Miami, an occasion on which they were denied access. The congresswoman has a clear message about the Caliburn-owned facility: “People say it’s clean, and they have beds and they have food — it’s prison-like conditions. There are prisons that are clean, and they have food,” said MucarselPowell. “But these are kids who haven’t committed a crime.”

She notes that The Miami Herald reported that the facility had 20 children detained who were U.S. citizens. A number

of detained children have relatives in the U.S. As of July 15, the facility spokesperson cited the population at 1,309.

“I’ve been working on this issue since January,” she said. “It was critical to me for folks to see what was happening there.”

Some of that work may be paying off.

Mucarsel-Powell said the detention center has contacted her staff to report that 1,600 children are being moved out of the facility. Mucarsel-Powell asks: “I want to know where those kids were moved.” The center claims the children are being moved to foster care and homes with family members. The center has stated to press that 376 children have been reunified and 70 were transferred. Mucarsel-Powell has composed a list of 50 questions that her staff has sent to the administrators of the center, demanding answers.

The House Judiciary Committee will also hold a hearing on Thursday, July 25, at which Mucarsel-Powell and her colleagues will have the opportunity to question Office Of Refugee Resettlement Director Jonathan Hayes about the Homestead facility and other immigration detention centers.

In light of her vocal advocacy for immigrants, especially children, MucarselPowell has received some criticism for voting “no” on the House bill approving $4.6 billion in emergency funding for border aid, which passed 305-102. Speaker Nancy Pelosi supported the bill, saying it would “reluctantly pass” the Senate-approved bill.

House members and Pelosi stated that the bill that came out of the Senate did not follow through with good-faith provisions negotiated. She stated in a letter to Demo-

cratic members of Congress: “The children come first … therefore, we will not engage in the same disrespectful behavior that the Senate did in ignoring our priorities.”

Reps. Mucarsel-Powell and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were among those who voted against the bill, saying it did not include key provisions.

“We sent billions of dollars to Homeland Security in January,” said MucarselPowell, “Then they came back in May, saying they didn’t have adequate funds.”

She described the “good faith agreement” made with the Senate, asking for added provisions including a time limit for children to be detained before being reunited with their families, and that basic humanitarian healthcare needs would be satisfied.

“I don’t think we should write a blank check to an administration that has misused funds,” she said. “They say they don’t have the funding to provide basic necessities like food, water, blankets and diapers? To me that was unacceptable.”

Comprehensive Health Services, the wing of Caliburn that operates the facility, negotiated a $341 million contract with the federal government in May, which is up in November. The Department of Health and Human Services has reported that the company is being paid $775 per child, per day detained.

IS IT SOMETHING IN THE WATER? amn. Another one. That’s what I think when I am entering yet another contact into my phone whose first name is Sara or Sarah. Honestly, I didn’t know any other Sara(h)s, until about seven years ago, and suddenly my life is crammed with them. Seriously, I have 18 contacts filed under that name. To review some: • Sarah Thomas: This is the editor of the Key West Weekly Newspaper. She’s a very important part of the Weekly team and I adore working with her. Yes, it’s hard working someplace where there are two people with the same name. But we got one thing right at the start — we weren’t going to play that first name email game. She is sthomas@ keysweekly.com and I am sara@ keysweekly.com. Can you imagine the number of misdirected emails if we only had one letter differentiating ourselves?

• Sarah Fullheart: This woman is a combination of my soul sister and my favorite fraternity brother.

She has taught me so many things, including the fact that I am unmanageable unless I am regularly engaged in strenuous exercise. I love her successes, I love her struggles, and I love our insider jokes. She is the “bro” I always wanted, and she is constantly dreaming up ways for us to play hard.

While she lived here, we distinguished ourselves as Good Sara(h) and Bad Sara(h), and the origin is rooted in one experience that may have involved tequila. We traded the moniker back and forth — sometime she was good and I was bad, and vice versa. At least I like to remember it that way, but my family still referred to her as the Good Sarah, saying things like, “What time are we going to Good Sarah’s house for dinner?”

Sheesh. Despite her elaborate PR wins, I still love her. She moved away two years ago and I’m still mad about it.

• Sarah Brawer: A local counselor, and long-time local, I consider Sarah to be a friend. She is quirky and fun and smart and there is no better breakfast date in the whole world. She considers the ocean to be just as healing as I do, and she is a reliable source of information and a really good listener. I love her wise advice.

• Sarah Dodamead: I’ve only met this young woman in person twice and she made quite an impact on me. Sarah, if you’re back and reading this, give me a shout.

• Sarah Mandile: Again, a contemporary of my oldest daughter, and now a Weekly freelancer. (Hey, where is that Camper of the Week you owe me?!) Sarah is studying journalism and communication at University of Florida and is an up-andcoming writer. If you’re keeping track of all of these Sarahs, you now realize if you are reading the Weekly there is a 3 in 10 chance (or something like that, math is hard) that the byline reads Sarah or Sara.

When a Sara(h) meets a Sara(h) for the first time, we have one question: “H or no H?” So, if I have spelled everybody’s name correctly, that means there is only one Sara in my contact list and that is the new coowner of the Overseas Pub and Grill — Sara Cook. Sara is a recent Keys transplant, and I look forward to getting to know her better.

CONSTRUCTION TO START housing since I’ve been here for 29 years,” said Panico. “The lower-income folks seem to manage it, but who is hurting is the teachers, police and firemen. This would be a perfect place for workforce housing … there are places to park elsewhere.” The representatives from the chamber also argued that the Rockland Key location — which had previously been scouted for a Wal-mart — would offer better space, less expensively.

“This is a very important community issue, and we want to get the facts out and have a good solid rationale,” said school board Chairman Bobby Highsmith.

Superintendent Mark Porter supported the transportation proposal in his report: “With regard to workforce housing, I think the school board has indeed stepped up,” he said. “I think it’s important to look at how we invest existing assets into workforce housing.”

He cited the district’s Sugarloaf property and its Trumbo Road property as sites for housing.

He said that if the district does not decide to develop Stock Island as a transportation depot, the board should instead sell it to a developer who can build workforce housing. Porter also said that using the Stock Island location for a warehouse facility would vacate a portion of the Trumbo land.

Board member Mindy Conn said there were valid reasons that the Rockland Key property wouldn’t work because it is not located close enough to employees. She also stated that she didn’t feel the district should be building on land it doesn’t already own,

and rather, use the Trumbo Road property, which “would be ideal for workforce housing.”

Board members Sue Woltanski and Andy Griffiths brought up the proposed warehouse space on the Stock Island property as an issue, since files can now be digitized.

“I don’t understand why we need a space three times the size of my house to store paper,” said Griffiths. Board member John Dick brought up some issues with the proposed construction plan but ultimately said that it was a disservice to staff and the district to abandon the project.

“We are way too far in the process to begin second-guessing,” said Highsmith, and commented that if the district sells the property to a developer, “that would set Trumbo back significantly.” Highsmith acknowledged the problem of the affordable housing shortage in the Keys and said that if it’s not addressed then the community will be come transient. “I don’t want to wait, and I don’t want to postpone with Trumbo.”

The board agreed that Ajax Construction is a fair company that — while the cost is high — has offered a reasonable estimate.

The board voted 3-2 to approve, with Conn and Griffiths dissenting.

Highsmith also pointed out that the county actually received money back on the Gerald Adams construction project. Bill Byrne of Ajax Construction reported to the board that he was pleased with the construction, and $575,000 would be returned to the county.

CAMERAS REDUCE COSTS COUNTY USES DATA TO SETTLE DISPUTE

t was an offhand remark by Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi that revealed the county’s newest cost saving measure — time-lapse cameras.

In one instance, the device saved taxpayers $25,000.

Cary Knight, the county’s project manager director, said the footage was used to settle a dispute in the construction of the new Cudjoe Fire Station.

“The site used to be a nursery and we encountered a pit that they used to dispose of organic material like tree stumps that was not suitable for compacting the site for construction,” Knight said. “Using the camera, we were able to document how big the hole was, how much material was in it, how much time they spent working on it. So, the original cost proposed by the service provider was $45,000 and we were able to get that down to $20,000.”

Knight said the county now employs the cameras at the sites of all its major capital construction projects and the images are streamed live on the county’s website — www.monroecounty-fl.gov (search “current projects”). Right now, the county has views of the fire station, plus the Marathon library, Rowell’s Waterfront Park and the Plantation Key Courthouse construction projects.

The cameras cost $3,500 each, Knight said, and are solar and battery operated.

When offline, they can continue to function and store data for up to a week. Online, they record images and videos that are uploaded to the cloud in case they need to be reviewed.

“I’m wishing that we had one at the Bernstein Park project on Stock Island,” Knight said. “We’re going back to put in some more irrigation and it would be helpful to know exactly where the pipes were laid because the drawings don’t always match what happens on the ground.”

Knight said he has the ability not only to view the aerial images, but also zoom in close enough to identify specific details such as the type of joint material used.

“It’s a tremendous amount of information,” he said.

The new Cudjoe Fire Station is set to be complete by January 2020. The entire building is rated to 200 mph and features a three-bay garage for apparatus that measures about 4,000 square feet and an administrative section that measures about 3,700 square feet.

The time lapse cameras allow the public to view the project’s progress in real time, or enjoy a speedy time-lapse of a project from start to finish. For Knight the cameras provide important historical notes about the actual construction and last, but not least, security.

“God forbid, something happens and there’s an accident, then it’s documented,” he said. “Site safety is very important.”

Although the official groundbreaking for the new Plantation Key Courthouse isn’t until September, construction is already underway. To check the progress on this and other projects, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov and search “current projects.”

Want to wash your hands of the whole affair — your storm-wrecked home — and walk away? Monroe County has a program for that.

“The purpose of the program is to reduce community risk,” said the county’s Helene Wetherington.

The program targets homes with repetitive damage, in lowincome areas, that house the elderly (62 years or older) or young children (18 years or younger). The county negotiates a deal, buys the home, and then demolishes it to leave the lot vacant.

Homeowners are encouraged to apply for the county’s Volunteer Home Buyout Program, part of the Rebuild Florida program funded by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Throughout the state, there’s $75 million, and $10 million has been set aside for properties damaged

by Hurricane Irma. Each jurisdiction in the Keys — unincorporated Monroe County, Marathon, Key West, Islamorada — can apply for no more that $5 million. The initial application must be submitted by Tuesday, July 30.

If approved, and the homeowner accepts the offer price, the home would be demolished and the building right, or ROGO, would revert to the county. The purchase price would be a fair market value

for the land and structure preIrma.

“What is the logic there?” asked Monroe County Commissioner David Rice. “It’s almost like we are rewarding the irresponsible property owners.”

Commissioner Heather Carruthers agreed, but said the county’s slice of the program would probably only amount to about 10 qualifying homes.

Wetherington said the properties would be ranked using the following criteria: • Low- to moderate- income neighborhoods • Household income at or below 80% of the annual median income • Households that include the elderly, or children; or households with disabled, handicapped or special needs members.

• Homes in the V flood zone (coastal) • Properties with reported repetitive loss • Home with no flood insurance at the time of damage (although homes with flood insurance are also eligible).

The resulting vacant space of the raised homes could then be used for conservation, recreation or storm water management.

Wetherington said that as of July 22, 14 property owners have expressed interest in the buyout program. To apply, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov and search “Irma Housing Grants and Programs.”

he current U.S. House session is coming to a close, and District 26 Rep. Debbie MucarselPowell reports back on funding for important Keys efforts.

Most pressing for a lot of Keys residents is the long overdue FEMA reimbursements the congresswoman has helped usher in, via her seat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

“I’ve been really proud and excited that we’ve been able to get a lot of funding for Monroe County,” said MucarselPowell. “I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on FEMA and we were able to get $14 million for debris removal.” In committee hearings, Mucarsel-Powell, among others, pressed FEMA officials for the reasons for the hold-up. As of July 17, Monroe County had submitted $60.6 million in completed and tentative projects for approval to FEMA. The state has approved $34.5 million of federal money for completed or in-progress projects in Monroe County thus far, and the reimbursements received this July marked the biggest payments.

Mucarsel-Powell has also advocated for affordability of flood insurance, penning a letter to FEMA Administrator Pete T. Gaynor regarding the “lack of transparency” of FEMA’s risk-assessment process and the “disparate impact” it will have on coastal communities.

Flood insurance in the Keys remains the most expensive in the state.

Besides working with FEMA, “One of my big wins was getting $200 million for Everglades restoration,” the congresswoman said. “We approved funding that invests in South Florida and ensures our priorities — including investments in clean energy, the fight against climate change, critical resources for Everglades restoration, and water infrastructure — are national priorities.”

HR-2740, which passed in the House, included not only environmental funding for South Florida, but also money for local education and health programs like Head Start, which will receive $1.5 million for regional programming. The congresswoman plans to visit the Keys after the session’s conclusion to see the funding come to fruition. “It’s so important to support early learning, and it’s such a determining factor in kids succeeding,” she said.

As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Mucarsel-Powell has helped secure an additional $5 million of funding for Key West International Airport updates. The committee also introduced the Coast Guard Shore Infrastructure Act, a bill that will fuel over $11 billion in funding, nationally, for the Coast Guard to shore up infrastructure repairs, improvements and maintenance. The congresswoman acknowledged that funding for the Coast Guard to perform needed repairs is crucial in the hurricane season.

In this session, the House also voted to raise the national minimum wage to $15 over the next six years as well as raise wages for service members.

TJX FOUNDATION AWARDS $10,000 TO WESLEY HOUSE FAMILY SERVICES A

$10,000 grant from the TJX Foundation will benefit a food program at Wesley House Family Services in Key West.

The TJ Maxx store in Key West is part of the TJX Group. The grant is from the charitable arm of the company.

Both Wesley House Family Services and the TJX Foundation seek to help vulnerable families and children access the resources they need to build a better future by supporting and meeting the needs of families. Wesley House Family Services’ Inez Martin Child Development Center will be the beneficiary of this grant.

Inez Martin offers all its students breakfast, a hot lunch and two snacks every day. In addition, the Backpack Program sends home food to

eligible children for the weekend. The program also provides food for all siblings in the home.

Each backpack contains “child friendly” food with a focus on whole grains and limited sugars.

Many of the children in the program come from homes that have food insecurity. Research has proven that children who are food insecure have increased behavioral problems and cognitive difficulties that impede overall learning.

Children who have healthy nutrition are more focused in school and have a greater rate of attention and retention in their classes.

Stephanie Scuderi has been promoted to market president for Centennial Bank for Monroe County, according to Teresa Condas, division president/South Florida.

“Stephanie is very deserving of this promotion. Not only being well known and respected throughout the Florida Keys, she has been instrumental in our bank growth. In addition to her 20-plus years of experience, Scuderi has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Cornell University, a master’s in integrated marketing communication from Northwestern University, with the most recent master’s degree from Darden at the University of Virginia. She is currently in her third year at Stonier Graduate School of Banking on the Wharton campus in Pennsylvania.

Scuderi currently serves as chair for the College for the Florida Keys Board of Trustees, vice chair for the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council, and as a director on the College of the Florida Keys’ Foundation board.

LEARNING TO DIVE SARAH THOMAS

moved down from her secondfavorite island, Manhattan. She has worn many hats: publicist, tour guide, bartender, teacher, and cat wrangler, but editor seems to fit the best.

M

y dive instructor, John Brazau, certainly has a way with words.

Presenting my dive certification, he said, “That’s your idiot card.” My understanding is that the dive certification course teaches you how not to be an idiot underwater, but it doesn’t actually prevent you from underwater idiocy.

“It’s like a diver’s license,” John said. You can follow all the rules, and use your turn signals, and drive the speed limit in the text, but if you go out there and don’t drive safely, the license means nothing. “That’s the best illustration I can offer.”

Truly, that made quite the impression on me. He and other members of the Southpoint Divers team told stories of divers panicking and shooting to the surface while exploring the Vandenberg (hint: you definitely don’t want to rocket up 100 feet without a safety stop … ever heard of “the bends?”), of divers jumping off boats unwisely and banging their air tanks on the side, of people diving drunk or hung over — a lot of the same type of stupid mistakes drivers make that put themselves and others in harm’s way.

I assured him that I would leave my idiocy on land, and on foot.

The last day of dives was an exciting one (SPOILER ALERT: Sharks!). I learned a lot, and Brazau and other crew members on the Phoenix had funny, memorable ways to cement these lessons in memory. One of my favorites were their creative devices for remembering the elements of the safety check:

B (Buoyancy Control Device), W (Weights), R (Releases, or straps to undo to get your equipment off), A (Air!), F (Final check). But it’s a lot easier to remember if you think, say “Bruce Willis Ruins All Films” or “Be Wasted Regularly After 5 p.m.”

It certainly worked for me!

We hit Sand Key Light and Rock Key on Friday. The water was smooth and the visibility was at least 30 feet. This time, I had to put my kit together as John watched, noting if I had forgotten anything (Weights! Don’t forget your damn weights.) and double checking my adjustments. Lisa, who was part of our dive group, was also on the last day of her certification, so we were doing similar skills: a slow ascent after “running out of air” (I thought John was going to actually turn off the air from my tank, but fortunately it’s just a drill), and using a compass to navigate underwater.

As a veteran of the Air Force and an Eagle Scout, John knows his way around directional devices. I, however, have never used a compass. Fortunately, for our purposes, it was pretty straightforward — straight being the key word.

Holding the compass straight and level was half the battle. I found that it was relatively easy to follow the directional instructions, if you

2 just watch where you’re going and follow the compass number. It followed the trend of a lot of the devices I’ve been introduced to: the depth and air gauges and dive computer are pretty user-friendly once you get over the initial panic of MATH. The challenges that John says will be ongoing are establishing neutral buoyancy and clearing my ears. “It’s a muscle like anything else,” John said of the Eustachian tubes. “You’ve just got to train them to do what you want.” My ears already felt more comfortable this time than they did the first dive.

The rest of me did too, and I didn’t even panic when we saw a pair of sharks. Okay, they weren’t big scary Jaws-style sharks, but sharks nonetheless. While at Sand Key, we had a 3- to 4-foot reef shark (pointy nose) swim by, followed by a good sized, 5- to 6-foot nurse shark. They cruised by, looked our way, and were more interested in a school of fish. Seeing the graceful, sleek creatures in their natural element was stunning.

We also should count ourselves lucky! That was dive three for Lisa and me, while John said it took him 50 dives to encounter a shark.

I still have a lot to learn, for sure, and like most things, I’m assured that ease and neutral buoyancy come with time. But if it tells you anything about my enthusiasm or experience, know that I’ve already got a reef dive booked this weekend and a Vandenberg dive on the horizon for the following one!

My two cents of advice as an amateur diver?

1) Be sober, not hung over, hydrated, and relaxed. You’re in the hands of professionals — there’s really nothing to stress about.

2) Breathe slowly and deeply. It will help you maintain neutral buoyancy AND prevent any panic.

3) Eat light. The difference between a sick stomach and an okay stomach was the difference between a heavy lunch vs. a Kind bar.

4) Look around instead of being hyper-focused on “am I messing up?” Observe the beauty surrounding you — that’s the fun part.

5) Don’t use your hands. Seriously! Using your fins underwater and keeping your arms close to your body will give you more control and energy. Trust me on this one--I’ve earned my idiot card.

In good news: Mercury is blessedly moving out of retrograde. It’s the Murphy’s law portion of the astrological calendar wherein travel plans go awry, hard truths are revealed and blood is spilled over Scrabble scores.

While they can often feel like the emotional equivalent of a sucker punch, retrogrades exist to bring about the changes in our lives we are afraid, or unwilling, to make ourselves. Locals make Keys connection aboard USS Truman aircraft carrier SARA MATTHIS

“Oh my gosh, it was amazing.” ounty Commissioner Michelle Coldiron gushed about her experience aboard the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier this past week.

Her experience included a tailhook landing and the rush of being catapulted back into the sky after her 24 hours aboard.

Coldiron and Monroe County planner Cheryl Cioffari were guests of the U.S. Navy Distinguished Visitor Embark, a program designed to place key leaders from all sectors of society — corporate, civic, government, education, non-profit and service — aboard a deployed carrier to experience firsthand how sailors and the Navy contribute to the stability of the country and the global community.

Aboard, they made their “Keys connection.”

Captain David Snowden, a Tavernier native and graduate of Coral Shores High School, is the executive officer aboard the USS Truman. That means he’s second in charge, enforcing the CO’s guidelines and ensuring that daily ship operations run smoothly.

Captain Robert “Fitz” Gentry is commander of Carrier Air Wing One — directly responsible for operation and administrative control and the warfighting capability of the air wing. Gentry’s dad was a well-known football coach at Marathon High School, Coldiron said. (Gentry recently replaced Captain Brent Blackmeyer, who was removed from the post in March over unspecified misconduct and relegated to a desk.)

The USS Truman is 1,092 feet long, 257 feet wide and is as high as a 24-story building. It uses nuclear reactors for propulsion, meaning the ship can go 3 million miles before refueling. The Nimitz Class carriers have a contingent of 6,000 aboard, including crew and aircrew, and can accommodate up to 90 aircraft on a flight deck that is almost 5 acres.

“It’s a floating city,” Coldiron said. “They took us through every part of the ship.”

The group, which also included representatives from Sen. Marco Rubio’s office, a circuit court judge from Jacksonville, and a president of a Florida university, toured the supply warehouse, the onboard dentist office, the machine shop used to make replacement parts while underway, and even the “jet shop.”

“They have engineers onboard who know how to fix every part of the aircraft,” Coldiron said.

The civilian contingent was flown out to the aircraft carrier from Jacksonville aboard a C-2 Greyhound Carrier Onboard Delivery aircraft, or COD.

“The tailhook landing was, um, very riveting. You’re strapped into a barebones metal chair, facing backwards,” said Coldiron, laughing. “The jerk when you land — going from 180 mph to 0 mph in less than three seconds … I almost did a somersault over the back of the chair.” Coldiron may, or may not, have screamed just a little.

It was a thrilling experience, she said, and made a huge impact on her about how important the air station is to the Navy, and to the Keys.

ROB BENTON BRINGS HIS INIMITABLE SOUND TO THE STREETS OF KEY WEST

W

hen musician Rob Benton was a contestant on “America’s Got Talent” in 2010, Baywatch alum David Hasselhoff applauded his skills but dismissed the guitar virtuoso as a street performer. Ten years later, The Hoff’s assessment has turned prophecy. Benton’s sets at Lucy’s, Irish Oak Barrell and Hank’s, routinely devolve into impromptu street parties with locals and tourists alike spilling out of bars and off of porches to hear his distinct sound. “I’m playing on the street for everybody that’s walking by,” he said. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

Benton played his first show in Key West less than a year ago, when Chris Toler invited him on stage at Willie T’s. The crowd went wild, and Benton never looked back. He is transitioning from being a New Hampshire-based restaurateur to a permanent Keys resident and recently purchased the Big Coppitt compound of late local musician Yankee Jack. As fate would have it, Yankee Jack once played music alongside Benton’s paternal grandfather, Country Music Hall of Famer Phil Benton.

To quote Benton, he doesn’t play guitar, he “beats the shit out of it.” He taught himself chords as a kid courtesy of a battered acoustic he rescued from a Dumpster. At the time, the guitar was bigger than Benton. “I was small and I couldn’t hold it properly, so I would lay it across my lap like a piano and turn all the tuners, so that if I hit the guitar it would sound good,” he said. The unconventional education shines through when onstage: “I’ll flip the guitar on its side, because some chords are easier for me to play that way because that’s how I learned,” he said.

Benton’s percussive approach was inspired by an adolescence more rooted in rap than rock. “I was the token white kid growing up in a rough area. I would bang on the desk and the neighborhood kids would rap over it. The minute I discovered looping and learned that my guitar could also be my drum set, that was it,” said Benton, who cites Busta Rhymes and Wu Tang Clan as influences.

A Coast Guard veteran, Benton has a relentless work ethic, playing two shows a day, six days a week. It’s a rigorous schedule he adopted during his headlining tenure at Las Vegas’ Circus

Circus Casino, the hallucinatory big top made famous by occasional Key Wester, Hunter S. Thompson.

“Coming to Key West, I wanted to play one place every night and one place every day. I hoped that I would become a tourist attraction,” he said. “I wanted people to bring me home with them and tell their friends.” Judging by the crowds, the word has spread and Benton has found a home at Duval staple Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar and the Caroline Street courtyard of Hank’s. Benton is poised to get even more visible in town; he and his brother recently purchased the Irish Oak Barrell.

Benton has built an everexpanding fan base. He was nominated for a Bubba Award and found a partner in rhyme in Navy veteran and freestyle rapper K-Ru$h; they met the night of Benton’s first performance on the island. The two are also roommates and best friends. While Benton grew up listening to hip-hop, K-Ru$h, who hails from the blue grass of Kentucky, has always had an ear for country music and power pop.

“It was meant for us to live the lives we lived and then come together and do this,” said K-Ru$h.

The duo has never rehearsed a single set. “We’ll do something spontaneously and then the crowd goes nuts over it and we’re like ‘all right we’re doing that from now on,’” said Benton.

The improvisational nature of their performance suits Benton, a former firefighter and father of four who prides himself on putting on a show.

“I’m an entertainer first and a musician second,” he said.

What is it that you most dislike?

Laziness and lack of urgency. I have a very strong worth ethic, and I don’t like making people wait. I also hate drugs and alcohol, but we’re sitting in a bar right now. K-Ru$h: And I’m high!

What is your astrological sign and do you fit the general description?

I’m 100% a Leo. I’m cute and cuddly, but I’ll rip your face off. I have a huge lion painting in my bedroom that I look at every morning and it reminds me every day to be fierce.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Dexter.

He has a code that he lives by, and I’m the same. I’m a bit of an asshole, but I’m the nicest asshole you’ll ever meet. I’m friendly but if you cross me it’s not pretty. K-Ru$h: He’s Johnny Bravo, or maybe Mufasa.

Disneyworld is my favorite place on the planet. My favorite ride is Peter Pan’s Flight. It’s a kid’s ride, I don’t care. Judge me all you want, newspaper readers.

What or who inspired you to be a musician? Me. I grew up in really terrible circumstances, and I didn’t want to be a statistic.

I discovered music and I’ve always been my biggest driving force.

No one can motivate you better than you.

Name three things you could not live without: Music, love and health.

Not in that order. What good is anything without anyone to share it with? What good is anything if you’re not healthy enough to enjoy it? And music is everything to me.

Lunch with one famous person, who would you choose, where would you go? The guys from Dave Matthews Band. I love Carter Beauford. I’d love to get dinner somewhere in Virginia where they’re from and just talk about music.

If invisible what would you do?

Listen to other people’s conversations. There’s a saying, you gotta have all the right people in your boat and you have to make sure those people aren’t drilling holes. I would check in on a couple of things. Kru$h: Rob a bank! Nothing would stop me. If I’m invisible, I’m robbing a bank.

My beard.

My autobiography would be titled… “Almost.” I’ve always done things that got really close to exploding and then deflated. It’s made me who I am.

erri Robinson and her daughter, Corey, stood along the shoulder of U.S. 1 on July 19 holding signs with a simple message.

“Respect the Keys.” “Thank You. Jesus Saves.”

Once homeowners at Coral Harbour Club, the two now live in Tequesta. Terri said her late husband, Larry, always loved the Keys. Born in 1952, he’d come to the islands with his dad in the ‘50s and ‘60s to fish.

Larry passed away in 2009. In 2010, Larry’s ashes were spread at Hens and Chickens Reef.

The mother-daughter combo came down to the Keys on June 29 for a month-long stay with friends at Coral Harbour Club. Terri said she’s been reading about what’s going on in the Keys, from the Fills to traffic safety concerns, and she wants to alert the conscience of those coming down to visit and stay.

“My daughter was 10 when we bought our place. She grew up here part-time,” she said.

“We don’t own any property down here any more. We just care. We want to make a difference.”

As to the response from motorists passing by? Terri says it’s been nothing but positive.

“From Fish and Wildlife to Monroe County sheriffs, troopers, paramedics and EMS, everybody’s been responding,” she said. “Semis are honking, dump trucks are honking, people are giving the thumbs up, waving and flashing lights.

Some people are slowing down saying ‘thank you.’”

“If we can leave here and make an impression on people, if we reach one person or two people, it’s a huge blessing,” she continued Terri said she’ll be standing along U.S. 1 all week holding the signs. Her ultimate hope is the placement of a larger sign with a similar message somewhere near the stretch as people make their way into the Keys.

“It’s our privelege to be able to come down here and it’s our privelege to be able to try and make a difference. It’s an absolute blessing,” she said.

ey West was the island chain’s undisputed wrecking capital. However, it was nowhere near the Florida Reef’s most statistically dangerous tract of coral. That reef, Carysfort Reef, grew in the Atlantic shallows off of North Key Largo.

In the early years of recordkeeping, roughly 25 percent of all reported shipwrecks were attributed to Carysfort. Full disclosure: in those early years Carysfort was sometimes used as an umbrella term for all Key Largo wrecks. Still, government officials recognized relatively early on that Carysfort posed a significant navigational hazard.

Subsequently, in 1824, Congress allocated $20,000 to construct a lightship that could be anchored out at the reef and act as a warning beacon.

The result was the Caesar, a

220-ton two-lantern schooner built in New York by Henry Eckford. The ship was designed with two masts, each equipped with a lantern-based light source that, when lit, could be visible for a distance of 12 miles. After its construction, the ship set sail for delivery at Key West.

It was not smooth sailing, as the crew of the Caesar encountered squally weather, the ship was blown ashore near Key Biscayne, and left abandoned. It was salvaged by wreckers and brought to Key West, where the ship’s new captain, John Whalton, was waiting. Once repaired, restocked, and re-crewed, Whalton set sail for the notorious Carysfort Reef and anchored at nearby Turtle Harbor in 1826.

STOCK ISLAND ART SCENE FINDS PERFECT HOME 1 2

t’s difficult to encapsulate the history, art, food and spirit of Stock Island under one roof.

So in order to do so, Bobby Mongelli decided to do it on several lots. This Saturday marks the opening of The Art Shack Studios and Galleries, which will house various artists, a food truck, plants, apparel and other unique offerings that capture the rustic vibe of Stock Island.

The Art Shack, located at 6404 Front Street on Stock Island, was home to the former COAST location, which set an inviting foundation for the small island’s art and music scene.

Mongelli, who owns several Stock Island restaurants and is considered a pioneer of the current Stock Island renaissance, said this has been a vision for several years.

“I have to give Billy and Coast credit. He really started bringing artists to the island,” said Mongelli. “So when the space became available, I wanted to continue the trend with some additional twists. There are a lot of starving artists out here who can’t afford the downtown studio prices in Key West, and this is a great opportunity to help showcase their work.”

Originally, the property was home to the initial site of the historic Spencer’s Boat Yard in the ’40s and ’50s. It was there the late Bobby Spencer developed one of the first hulls for parasailing. Today the compound is made up of a main gallery

building, four shipping containers that serve as art studios, an art-focused plant shop and a Caribbean-flavored food truck.

“I pretty much became the de facto property manager with tenants, “ said Stuart Damon with a chuckle. “But the foliage and the property just has a great energy and I think visitors will feel the symbiotic vibe between the artists.”

Damon, who owns Damon Designs and will house a studio in the main gallery, specializes in found objects and functional art, like his handmade chandelier, which was made from reclaimed Riesling bottles held together by wine barrel hoops reclaimed from Napa Valley.

Another Art Shack tenant, Alex Popolla, owns Under the Leaf plant store. Popolla describes her store as “a quirky art-focus plant shop” that offers plants, ranging from Spanish moss to succulents and airplants.

“This place is filled with inspiration,” said Popolla. “All you need to do to get your juices

going is get all of these creative people together in one place — especially since most of us have our own specialties and can see one another’s art through so many different eyes.”

Other artists on the grounds include Kassy Burnette of Kassy B Fine Art, who describes the lush compound as “island chill.”

Burnette, who acts as “creative partner,” will display her personal mosaic and acrylic paintings within her studio and gift shop that offers items for tourists and locals alike. In addition, Cristina Velardi of Cocky Key West will offer apparel from her Key Westbased company.

“There really is something for the whole family here,” said Mongelli. “We also have Chef Dion Wong who has created Jerk, which is a food truck offering things like curry goat, guava barbeque beef ribs and jerk pork tacos.”

The Art Shack Studios and Galleries grand opening takes place on Saturday, July 27 from 6 to 10 pm. Live music by Miguel Perez, specialty cocktails, craft beer and local artists will on be on tap, along with fresh eats from the Jerk food truck.

he 2019 Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards will go down in the record books after hitting several memorable marks. The 6th Annual event packed the Key West Theater with more than 350 attendees, while raising approximately $20,000 for Samuel’s House through sponsors, ticket sales and raffle items.

Most of all, more than 90 winners were revealed over the course of the evening, which was divided between comedy bits, lipsync battles and community recognition awards. HIGH HONOR MOTE SCIENTIST TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS AWARD AT NATION’S CAPITAL

E

rinn Muller’s coral and disease research is catching the attention of many in Florida, the U.S. and around the world.

The science Erinn Muller director of Mote’s Elizabeth Moore Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration on Summerland Key, Muller was in her office when she received an email from the National Science Foundation that she had been chosen for a prestigious presidential award.

In early July, President Donald Trump announced the recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. In Florida, Muller was among eight scientists to receive the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government. The award is given to outstanding scientists and engineers who are setting out on their independent research careers and exude promise for leadership in science and technology.

“My National Science Foundation program officer, Dan Thornhill, recommended me for the award,” Muller told the Weekly in a recent interview. “He sent me an email with a link to a press release and asked if I knew anything about it. I clicked on the link and saw the press release for the award with my name listed. That was the first I heard about it.”

“We (Dan and I) both got really excited together, being hopeful it was real,” she continued. “A couple hours later, I got an email from the National Science Foundation saying indeed I received it.”

On Wednesday, Muller traveled to Washington, D.C. with family for the awards ceremony, set for Thursday, July 25 at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall. Muller, who began her career at Mote in 2012, said getting the news was “unreal.”

“I knew over the last two years I was being considered for the award. I knew how competitive it was and never got my hopes up,” she said. “It was an out-of-body experience when I found it was actually true.”

Muller is one of the primary responders who are dealing with the devastating coral disease in the Florida Reef Tract. Her goal is determining how coral health and disease change under climate change and ocean acidification conditions.

She admits there’s much work ahead to understand the mechanisms leading to compromised coral health to prevent future disease outbreaks. But working with Mote Marine Laboratory, she said it provides her with the support needed for essential research. Through the National Science Foundation, Muller has worked since 2015 to study resiliency in staghorn coral, a threatened species.

“Water temperatures are going to keep increasing, and pH will continue to decrease until we have societal change that addresses these issues,” she said. “My research focuses on what makes certain corals special and able to survive these threats.”

Muller said she’s very grateful for the award and recognition. She said she’s received a lot of support along the way, from her parents, who told her to follow her dreams, to advisors and teachers and Mote staff.

“It’s a long list,” she said. “Mote has supported my research in so many ways from the financial support to get me the results for my research and the people helping me with day-to-day tasks.”

CORAL EXPERIMENT Study brings hope to future success of out-plants

“B

ecause you’re all here tonight, I know I don’t have to remind you all of the importance of coral reefs,” said Paige Carper during Coral Restoration Foundation’s Sips and Science event. Carper works as a restoration associate for CRF, but got her start in the field much earlier. She presented her master’s research to an enthralled audience of “coral nerds” and enthusiasts.

“I have always been interested in coral reefs and have been a witness to their declining health over the years in the Florida Keys,” Carper said. This is where coral restoration comes in: “Coral restoration is a necessary step to get reefs back to a healthy state. Climate change and numerous other factors have and continue to contribute to a decline in live coral tissue. However, despite many colonies experiencing negative results, there are the few that continue to persist. Through restoration, we can continuously add live tissue to the reefs that are declining, while striving to learn more about why certain corals are surviving.”

Generally, coral restoration involves placing identical fragments of coral species close together onto old reef with glue, nails, epoxy, twine, etc. “The hope,” Carper adds, “is that the corals will grow over their pucks, fuse together, and become one huge, sexually-reproductive adult in a fraction of the time it would have taken to grow that same colony from a single coral recruit.”

Carper describes the more specific aims of her research — a predator exclusion experiment. Carper specifically focused on parrotfish predation of newly out-planted coral fragments, which had been observed to cause mass mortality of the new corals. She designed an experiment to look into the short- and long-term effects these fish have on three species of corals under three separate treatments for restoration.

The experiment compared growth rates of corals that were caged, open, and cage-controlled (cage materials are present but not covering the corals). Carper’s research focused on three species of corals that were commonly found throughout the Florida Keys.

“Unfortunately, their live tissue cover has decreased drastically over the years, as has happened with many coral species in this region,” she said.

Coral restoration often focuses on historically-dense populations of corals that have been lost to various stressors in hopes of jump-starting ecosystem-level recovery.

“My main goal was to improve techniques for future restoration work and coral fragment success and survival,” said Carper.

“Now it gets fun! Hang on,” Carper said, explaining the week-to-week comparisons of coral growth under different array-types (treatments with a cage, open with no cage, and with a cage control). And then her plot twist comes in: “Imagine you’re a coral and you’re trying to hang on against parrotfish, storms, bleaching, etc. and then you get slammed with a hurricane.”

Hurricane Irma hit the Keys in the middle of Carper’s experiment, destroying all the caged and cage-control treatments along with much of the lower Keys community that the experiment was based out of. Jessica Levy, from CRF, asked Carper, “After Irma, the fish had no idea what to do, or where they were. The fish just went in a washing machine. Did that affect your results?” Carper said it might

have, describing how her statistical analysis was warped by this anomaly and how she’d love to replicate her project and compare these results with a non-storm year.

Notwithstanding the storm, Carper finished her experiment as best she could and ended up with a few key conclusions and takeaways for coral restoration: “Coral fragments out-planted in a vertical orientation typically experienced less bleaching in times of elevated temperatures than those out-planted horizontal on the tops of mounds. This small change in our techniques may alleviate some stress during the increasingly hot summers.”

“So, what would I do different?” asked Carper. “Not have a hurricane!”

But, Irma aside, Carper was thrilled personally to put live coral tissue back into the environment and to observe how much growth was achievable in

just one year. “It made me hopeful for the future of those out-plants and restoration as a whole,” she said.

Carper concluded with the hope that her findings will be used in restoration of these bouldering species within the region and to spark an interest in other scientists studying other ways to improve restoration efforts.

“When I began my master's program, bouldering species of corals being used in restoration work was still fairly new, especially to the Florida Keys.

Now, the Florida Keys have lost a drastic amount of live coral cover. Many reefs today appear barren and almost desert-like. If the coral reefs in the Keys are to once again thrive, restoration is essential.”

A

former Keys resident is gearing up to compete in the World Championships for underwater rugby in Austria with Team USA. “I love being in the water.

When I found a sport that I can play underwater, I knew I would enjoy it,” said Mike McCallister, who once resided in Marathon. “While it is a team sport, it also requires a high level of individual discipline too.”

On his hour-and-a-half drive home from underwater rugby practice to Fort Pierce, where he lives, McCallister hopped on the phone with Keys Weekly. He plays for the Florida Krakens, an underwater rugby club based in Pompano.

The Krakens began as the Florida Keys Krakens, spring boarding off the popular Florida Keys Underwater Hockey Club in Key Largo.

A few underwater hockey players who played underwater rugby in Colombia (where they originate and where the sport is very popular) introduced the sport to the underwater hockey club. This is how McCallister, a regular at underwater hockey practices, started his underwater rugby career.

He lived in Marathon for two years and played underwater hockey and rugby with the club until he moved away from the Keys in April 2016. He started playing again in April 2018, when those same Colombian players moved and rebranded as the Florida Krakens in Pompano — the only underwater rugby team in Florida.

So, what exactly is under-

water rugby? “Basically, it’s like mixing water polo with actual rugby, and playing it underwater while holding your breath,” said McCallister. “Players wear masks, fins, and snorkels. You swim back and forth just like water polo. You have a small ball and you’re trying to score.

But, the goals are on the bottom in the deep end/diving well of the pool, usually 12 to 15 feet deep. Aspects of rugby also remain — grabbing, tackling and holding.

“As long as you have the ball, you can grab any player in the water. And if you’re defending, you can hold onto any other person,” McCallister continues. “When you have to breathe, you have to either let go of the ball or swim to the surface with it. But the ball can't break the surface: that’s out of bounds.”

There are three positions: forward, defender and goalie.

Each play is about 15 to 20 seconds long, with one set of players underwater while another set is recovering at the surface.

“We don’t stay down too long, because then it throws the rotation out of sync. The longer you recover at the surface, the longer the person at the bottom has to wait. Instead, we get fresh lungs, fresh people in there,” he said.

McCallister and six of his fellow Krakens are preparing to travel to Graz, Austria with the USA National Team for the 11 CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championships from July 27 – Aug. 3. McCallister, who will play defense, made the cut for the 15-person team out of about 52 players who tried out between May 2018 and February 2019.

The last World Championship was hosted in 2015 in Cali, Colombia, and Team USA finished 9th out of 12 teams.

“I can’t wait to represent Team USA. I’m super excited to get this opportunity,” said McCallister. “It’s a World Cup — the highest competition for this sport. It’s a mini-Olympics.”

There will be 17 different countries putting forth a men’s team at the World Championship in Austria. Still, for Team USA, the relative obscurity of their sport has meant that players take on the financial commitment for all expenses to tryouts, tournaments, team training and travel to the World Championship. “Without question the hardest part is the time commitment,” McCallister said. ‘It requires an immense amount of sacrifice both in my work and my personal life. The financial commitment has also been significant. Fortunately, my family, friends and col-

leagues have been very supportive of me throughout this endeavor.”

Notwithstanding the time and financial obligations, McCallister and his team are eager to represent the country: “Team USA is fairly young, but this is the strongest we’ve ever played since competing in the Worlds. We’ve got the strongest, most cohesive fleet ever, so we feel we can have a good showing … and maybe even make an upset. eauty is in the eye of the ogre in “Shrek the Musical Jr.,” based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and Broadway musical. It’s a “big, bright, beautiful world,” as everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek Jr. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

Once upon a time, in a faraway swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek found his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquadd, he’s handed a task – if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.

The show is directed by Tom Thayer, choreographed by Penny Leto, with set design by Michael Boyer, drama instructor John McDonald and stage managed by Rena Dahlgren.

The public hearing is being held for the purpose of receiving public comment on the proposed assessments and collection of the assessment on the ad valorem tax bills.

he Grateful Dead and Reef Relief go together like patchouli and patch pants, a match made in heaven. For the past three years, Reef Relief’s biggest fundraiser has coincided with the birthday of “Captain Trips” himself, Jerry Garcia. Thursday, Aug. 1 marks the fourth year of the Annual Reef Relief Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash at the Green Parrot. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and, following a classic jam band time span, will continue until midnight.

The pairing is more than just an outtasight idea. Assistant Program Director Alex Risius explains the connection. “Twenty plus years ago Bob Weir, guitarist for the Grateful Dead, helped Reef Relief create their very first Coral Reef Teachers Guide. Recently, we became the very first ocean conservation organization to receive support from The Jerry Garcia Foundation. Jerry Garcia was passionate about the ocean and diving and Bob Weir was an avid conservationist. Together, they were a perfect fit to help support our organization’s mission,” said Risius.

Those who aren’t lucky enough to find themselves in Key West that night can support the efforts from home by purchasing some groovy goodies from the Reef Relief online fundraiser tied to the Bash.

The “Grateful Diver” Campaign, created as a joint effort between Reef Relief and The Jerry Garcia Foundation, celebrates the quintessential ocean-loving steward with designs riffing on dive flags and the famous Dead lightning bolt.

The Birthday Bash, which is Reef Relief’s biggest fundraiser of the year, has found its natural home at the Green Parrot. Reeflovers and reefer-lovers can join the free party which, in true Parrot form, features top-notch live music courtesy of The Happy Dog, a Philadelphia band that describes itself as a “sound zoo.”

Happy Dog shows are known for featuring riff-y jams and improvisations that pull from influences like the Talking Heads, the Beatles and, of course, the Grateful Dead. For the Birthday Bash, the band will play three sets, at 5:30, 9 and 11 p.m., with time for raffles and games between each set. As everyone knows,

there’s “no sniveling” at the Parrot, and the raffles certainly give no cause for it. Reef Relief is offering up some pretty fantastic swag including a two-night stay at the Casa Marina, a sky-diving certificate, a custom-made Key West ukulele, a Schecter guitar (that most people will recognize from the walls of the Lazy Gecko), boat trips, dive gear and gift cards. Last year the raffle and online campaign brought in over $12,000 – money that goes directly toward programs such as the Discover Coral Reefs School Program, Coral Camp for Kids, and the Stormwater Education Program.

For deadheads looking to make a full affair of their tie dyeclad weeknight, Tropic Cinema is also offering an ode to Jerry and company. The Grateful Dead Meet-up at the Movies coincides with Jerry’s Birthday Bash but fortunately leaves room for everything. At 8 p.m., the Tropic will screen a previously unreleased 1991 concert. The show was considered a touchstone moment in that it featured a broad mix of beloved classics and rare gems. Sound geeks can rejoice in hearing one of only two Dead concerts ever recorded on 48-track. What really matters here, though, is timing.

With a run time just under three hours, Deadheads have enough time to start the night with The Happy Dog soundcheck at 5:30 p.m., catch an epic film and get back to the Parrot in time for the final Birthday Bash set at 11 p.m.

It’s a “long, strange” night, but it’s good fun for a good cause. And Jerry certainly wouldn’t care if you took Friday off to recover.

What does a “good education” mean to you? A good education doesn’t mean taking the hardest classes, but getting the most learning out of it, so you can discover your interests and prepare for the future.

What is something that you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? I didn’t know why they started preparing you for graduation from day one. Now, I know this is because four years go by faster than you think. So, try hard and have fun.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS? I’m in various clubs such as National Honor Society and Executive Board, but my biggest affiliation is our drama club and school musicals, because I love performing and being involved in theater.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher is Mrs. Wood, because even though biology wasn’t my favorite subject, I learned a lot, and I feel like she prepared me well.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I don’t watch much TV, but my family and I love watching survivor shows and history documentaries.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend FKCC for two years to complete my AA and then transfer to a Florida school.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? If I’m at home, I like to spend my spare time experimenting with make-up. It lets me express my creativity where I can try new things.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? I’m not quite sure, but the Keys would be a great place to live and be around my family.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Graduate from college, have a career that I enjoy and be able to live comfortably — not paycheck to paycheck.
