arlier this month, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued a statement encouraging homeowners to take up arms (humanely, they say) against invasive green iguanas on private property. The announcement made national news and resulted in public outcry; an online petition to stop the sanctioned killings has garnered over 20,000 signatures. No word on whether the pool attendant who caught a stray bullet from a would-be iguana hunter in Boca Raton last week is among the petitioners. In light of the recent reptilian controversy we asked the Key West community:

ill Snodgrass, the woman behind the I Love Stock Island Festival and the Florida Keys Seafood Festival, has proposed managing the Key West Farmer’s Market. This is good news for vendors and shoppers.

“The close of the Bayview Park market was not city-induced,” said Mayor Teri Johnston at the July 16 commission meeting, “it was the manager of the market that gave it up for financial reasons. I know how great it is for the city of Key West.” Johnston also said she “applauded” Snodgrass for taking over management of the market.

City Manager Jim Scholl explained the resolution before the commission.

“The desire is to move it from where we’ve had it at Bayview to Truman Waterfront Park,” Scholl said, “The layouts have parking areas, and grass at one location for vendors.” He said it’s a “better opportunity for a growing event.” (See image with location options #1, a grassy area with parking and #2, a stretch of pavement with the sun at the vendors’ backs).

“These types of markets are fantastic,” Commissioner Sam Kaufman said, and acknowledged that vendors’ business model is “thrown” by pause and relocation of the market. The hope is that Truman Waterfront Park will be the market’s semi-permanent home, with the benefit of the Duval Loop and cruise ship traffic.

The commission approved the license agreement, which will be good for one year. The newly managed and located Key West Farmer’s Market will be back up and running on Thursday, Aug. 1 and is projected to be open every Thursday.

MINISTERS TALK ABOUT UNACCOMPANIED MINORS IN HOMESTEAD FACILITY

On July 12, a group of Hispanic ministers and parishioners called a press conference to correct what they called the misconceptions about the living conditions in the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children.

Russell Black of Latino Impact Ministries and Gigi Delgado of Hope 4 Life led the charge.

“This is not a detention center. It is a protection center,” Delgado said. “(The children) are not miserable because of their circumstance (in the shelter). They are miserable because of the story they are carrying.”

Black said all volunteers and employees of the center are required to sign non-disclosure agreements, but said he received special dispensation to speak candidly from officials inside the shelter.

While he declined to answer questions about how the children came to be designated as unaccompanied, he said every kid has a bed, three meals a day, a shower, schooling and is issued two pairs of shoes and clothing upon arrival. The kids are allowed two 10-minute phone calls “home” every week. He also said the kids are separated into gender and age groups and accompanied 24/7 by a youth care worker. He said there are case workers and medical personnel as well.

“They have video games. They have PlayStations and Xboxes,” Black said.

Another speaker said in Spanish, “They play on artificial soccer fields, and those are not cheap.”

Debbie Wehking was born in Homestead and now lives in West Kendall.

She said she has been protesting at the shelter’s entrance for more than a month now. She and colleagues operate under a tent festooned with signs like “Caliburn, Shame on You!” (Caliburn is the company that operates the shelter.)

“The conditions here do not compare to the conditions on that border at all, and I’m grateful for that,” Wehking said.

“But there’s no motivation for the people

who work here to efficiently process the children and get them to the family members and sponsors in this country.”

Delgado and Black both said they have volunteered at the shelter since it opened in 2015. Both said they don’t see the same kids every week during the religious services they conduct inside. Estimates of the number of children inside, according to the volunteers, range from 2,500 to 4,000. Black said there are about two dozen faithful who volunteer inside; 400 kids attend the service at a time, and multiple services are held. Both Black and Delgado said they are not allowed to interview the children to learn more about their circumstances. But Delgado said she gleans something from the prayers they request about how they came to be at the shelter in the first place.

“Sometimes they are separated from their parents at the border. Sometimes they arrive with another family member or an adult and are separated,” she said.

“Some have been abandoned by their families in their own countries and come to the U.S. looking for their parents. Or the parents pay ‘coyotes’ to take the children across the border and the coyotes abandon them.”

One of the most often remarked shelter rules is the “no touching” rule, she said. Children cannot touch each other, nor are staff or volunteers allowed to touch the children in their care.

“What can replace the hug of a mother? Nothing,” Delgado said. “You can’t hug them for their own good. Many of them are traumatized by the time they get here.”

The subject of unaccompanied minors has punctuated the national news as of late. On July 1, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez visited shelters on the Texas border and said detainees were being treated inhumanely, forced to drink water out of the toilet and denied showers for days. A few days earlier, on June 26, U.S. Rep. Debbie MucarselPowell invited all the Democrat presidential candidates to the shelter, just south of Miami where the first debate was held. They were denied entry. On July 5, Mucarsel-Powell sent a letter to the Office of Refugee Resettlement with 51 questions about the shelter, ranging from hurricane evacuation plans to the number of children in the shelter.

The shelter is located adjacent to the Homestead Air Force base and was opened in 2015 during the Obama administration. It closed briefly in 2018, then reopened.

The shelter is operated by Comprehensive Health Services. Black said it employs about 4,000 at the Homestead shelter. Comprehensive Health Services is owned by Caliburn International, which in turn is owned by D.C. Capital Partners. In May 2019, Comprehensive Health Services received a no-bid, seven-month contract worth $341 million. A federal official told the Miami Herald the no-bid aspect was due to “unusual and compelling urgency.” The newspaper also reported Comprehensive Health Services earns $775 per day, per child, according to a representative from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

According to a 2016 article from Reveal News, there are 87 shelters across the U.S. for unaccompanied minors. The one in Homestead is thought to be the biggest, or one of the biggest, although there are very few hard numbers.

Speakers at the July 12 press conference said they weren’t sure how many kids were inside. According to shelter officials, all the kids range in age from 13 to 17.

But on July 15, a group from the U.S. House that toured the facility including U.S. Rep Rosa DeLauro and U.S. Rep Debbie Wasserman Shultz were told the numbers were much lower. A spokesperson told the group that the population is currently 1,309 teenagers — down from 2,252 on July 3. Also on July 15, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services representative told the press that there are no teenagers “being added to the facility,” as quicker reunification of children and parents has opened up space at other shelters.

DeLauro was reported as saying the children did not appear to be mistreated and were smiling. Another elected official on the tour said the classrooms were so noisy as to make learning impossible.

In May, Peter Schey of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law filed suit against the U.S. government for failing to comply with the terms of the Flores Settlement Agreement of 1997. The Flores Agreement outlines how unaccompanied minors are to be treated in situations like these.

Schey sent a team of professionals to inspect the Homestead facility. He found four main issues: the children are staying for prolonged periods; it is a secure facility (in other words, more like a jail than a shelter); the children are harmed by the lengthy detention; the children are illegally delayed. According to shelter data provided to Schey, the average length of a child’s stay at Homestead is 62 days, down from 89 days during the period the federal government demanded fingerprints from all adults living in a proposed sponsor’s household. Schey’s exhibits included testimony from shelter children who said it had been weeks since they had spoken to a caseworker, and generally expressed confusion about the process.

“I think the children here are miserable,” said Wehking, the on-site activist protesting the shelter. “They don’t know where they are, how long they will be here for, or when they will ever be reunited. I cry myself to sleep every night.”

The pastors who spoke last week a the press conference in front of the shelter identified themselves as immigrants.

“Twenty-six years ago I was an immigrant,” said Elvin Espinal. “Immigration has rules and a process. We need to see to the needs of the children going through this process.”

o two ways about it: the folks at Florida Keys SPCA are geniuses. They’ve managed to combine two of every kid’s favorite things — summer vacation and animals — to create something new and exciting for Key West youth.

Critter Camp takes the joy of summer break to a new level by adding a healthy dose of furry creature love. The aim of Critter Camp is to help children develop compassion while also learning basic animal care skills. The camps, open to kids ages 7-11, feature guest speakers, games and special projects. Campers learn age-appropriate lessons about issues of animal welfare and animal-related career paths, all while cultivating their own empathy.

The kids aren’t the only beneficiaries. The animals at the shelter receive extra attention each day during camp. Campers are given daily time to play

2 with the dogs and chill out in the “free roam” room with the cats. The pampering doesn’t end with attention. Kids cook up house-made healthy treats for the animals and participate in daily craft lessons, which include constructing toys for the feline campers. The shelter animals return the favors by learning a few new tricks to dazzle their human friends.

The camp, which is part of a national program through the SPCA, is in its first year in the Florida Keys, thanks in part to a grant from the Keys Open Doors Foundation. This newest location has already seen a great response from the community.

The first week sold out almost immediately with the second following quickly behind.

Executive Director Tammy Fox is thrilled by the level of engagement in the community, especially as it comes on the heels of the opening of their new facility.

3 “We’re excited to be able to share this center with our community,” said Fox. “The goal of what we hope to accomplish is so important, so we want to make it accessible to as many people as possible.” The SPCA has been able to maintain that commitment to accessibility through scholarships for families who need a little extra assistance making summer camp a reality.

In a sea of camps that provide fleeting entertainment, this effort stands out by offering a deeper, lasting benefit. It’s a rare beast in which two groups are mutually benefitting from every activity. One such highlight of the week is the reading program. Every day, kids read to the dogs and cats. Research has shown that when kids read aloud to animals, it increases their confidence and cognitive processing skills. The animals simply respond to voice, feeling calmed and engaged. Fox is especially proud of the content

4 of the camp, which she sees as a way of spreading a premise of humane education. “Not only does the camp benefit kids, but the animals as well. We’re planting seeds with the kids so they can take what they’ve learned and share it with friends and family.”

Kids will head home from camp this weekend with blissedout puppy party memories, but they’ll also carry (unbeknownst to them) an enhanced capacity for emotional development.

The shelter animals will have received heavy doses of love and attention and can head into the weekend with bowls of fresh treats and baskets of new toys.

Sounds like a win-win.

emo famously taught the world that all drains lead to the ocean. It’s a great reminder for those inland, but for those of us who live surrounded by water, it becomes DNA-level knowledge. Unfortunately, even on an island surrounded by turquoise waters and rich sea life, apathy and intractability can outweigh good intentions.

Key West has been fighting a battle for several years to reduce plastic waste, particularly in restaurants. For a town that is constantly on the move, take-out is a way of life. Even with the best intentions, a community of carryout connoisseurs creates an extraordinary amount of waste. There are plenty of conscious eaters who bring their own dishes or at least reuse or recycle what they bring home. When they’re handed armfuls of Styrofoam boxes though, it’s a losing battle.

Fortunately, Key West has gained a strong new champion in The Surfrider Foundation.

Surfrider is a national organization that seeks to improve awareness and stewardship of ocean and beach ecosystems. Until last year, the closest chapter was located in Miami. In August 2018, though, with the ongoing efforts of several key advocates, a local chapter opened

with a directive of responding to specific concerns of the unique ecology of the Florida Keys.

With a focus on public education and partnerships with local businesses, Surfrider has a targeted mission. Volunteer Coordinator Julie Brown explains the local chapter’s platform of education and network-building for businesses.

“One of the hardest parts of green efforts for restaurateurs is the sourcing of appropriate materials,” Brown said. “It’s difficult to find good options that are reasonably priced. Our hope is that as we get more businesses on board, we’ll be able to negotiate with suppliers for better discounts.” Currently, their goal is to increase membership and solicit 10 businesses for the Ocean-Friendly Restaurants program (OFR), an initiative that encourages restaurants to adopt more eco-friendly practices, by the end of the year.

Though they hope to grow the local green scene, Surfrider has, in less than a year, already begun to turn the tides. One local eatery, Date & Thyme, has already met the criteria and earned the full designation as an OFR. Colleen Depuew of Date & Thyme explains their motivation for making the move: “Our mission is whole wellness. Part of that wellness is taking

care of the planet.” The healthy eatery has long been a mainstay of wellness in Key West, so naturally there is also the element of customer expectation. “We’ve been ahead of the curve in terms of treating the whole body. Becoming greener is simply us putting our money where our mouth is,” said Depuew.

Several others are well on their way in terms of eco efforts. The Coffee Plantation has made the switch to all compostable takeaway materials, eliminated plastic bags, and made the trade to paper straws. This optimistic trajectory also includes one business that has based its entire model on a pledge to incorporate eco-friendly practices. The aptly named Green Room runs on a model that includes fair prices that account for a 5% to 10% donation to community organizations such as the Turtle Hospital and Reef Relief. Their merchandise is all printed with eco-friendly ink, everything is recycled (including the cigarette butts!) and the bar itself is created from reclaimed wood that was collected from a tropical almond tree that fell in 2014. And naturally, there isn’t a plastic straw in sight, a simple move that saves over 8,500 straws from entering the environment every single month.

Some restaurant owners and managers counter that the costs of green efforts are simply too high and unrealistic. Coffee Plantation owner Diane Glorie disagrees. As she lays out examples of their new palm leaf plates and compostable cutlery, she explains making the change. “It is an added cost, but we’re a mom and pop business. If we can do it, anyone can do it.” Surfrider is also hoping to step up and help get restaurants over that initial hurdle. Brown said of their upcoming initiatives, “We are currently developing a mentor program that will give first-year sponsorship to a restaurant in return for their mentoring and sharing information, such as supplies and best practices, with other restaurants interested in joining the program. We intend to highlight the restaurants on the national website and help promote their OFR status on our social media.”

It can be argued that aside

from the good feels of doing the right thing, there is already a fiduciary motivation to become more eco-friendly. While some restaurant owners get hung up on the initial costs, there is substantial evidence that businesses with ecologically driven missions are succeeding.

Two months ago, the meat-alternative brand Beyond Meat went public. By the close of its first day on the market, its gains were 163% above its IPO, making it the best performing first-day IPO in nearly two decades. Seventh Generation has raised the bar for household cleaners, while becoming an industry leader valued at $700 million.

Regionally, Saltwater Brewery, based in Delray Beach, gained national acclaim by introducing 6-pack rings that could be consumed by fish. The idea was so popular that it’s since been adopted by Corona.

Dinner by Date & Thyme, paired with an ice cold Corona? Sounds like ocean-friendly goodness.

’m sure it irritates the current generation of schoolage kids just as much as it used to bother me.

Dr. Stanley Sack No sooner are we past the Fourth of July then we start to hear those “Back to School” murmurings. I personally have not yet seen any ads, but I’ve heard my first few “save the dates,” and I know everything else is soon to follow.

It makes sense, then, to begin to talk about school-related stuff.

Everybody, students and parents alike, is allowed a little anxiety around the coming school year.

But let’s not forget there might be a few academically anxious parents (AAPs) of kids who might not even be looking at kindergarten for a few years. These AAPs might be wondering: At what age will I know whether or not my child is going to be a good student? And what should I be doing now to prepare him? While research is out there on these questions, there isn’t always agreement, and the answers aren’t always clear-cut.

But let’s talk a little about what the specialists are saying.

We’re all familiar with that toddler who can sing, say, “MacArthur Park,” including the instrumental portion, perfectly and in its entirety. Does that translate to better school performance? One study in Britain looked down to age 22 months and found that good development then predicted success at age 10 years. Another study, this time on our side of the pond, found that reading at an earlier age predicted academic success during the grade school years. But before you start sending away for those grad school applications for your early reader, note a curiosity

in the study: early reading was associated with less overall educational achievement.

Clearly, the messages are mixed, and you may not be able to predict how she will do. But there are some things you can do early on to increase her chances of success: • Read to your child from an early age. Even in infancy, children can get used to the rhythm of speech, the turning of pages (assuming you have the old-fashioned, paper-type books), and associating pictures with words.

Make it fun by letting her choose the book.

• Make sure you and your child play together! Choose some ageappropriate games that involve physical activity.

• Realize that those periodic doctor visits are not just “for the shots.” Your pediatrician will screen your child for problems with development. If any are found, it’s important to follow through with any referrals.

• Although you don’t need to enroll your child in an Ivy League nursery school, an appropriate preschool will help stimulate learning and development. If it’s not affordable, look to see if your child qualifies for Head Start.

We haven’t really answered the question of who will do well.

But a lot of the activities that will prepare kids to take their best shot at school are things that are, well, fun to do for parents and kids alike. Include lots of them in your routines, and the seemingly more relaxed pace of summer is a great time to start. And remember: if that TV is off because the two of you are doing other things, that’s less back-to-school ads!

f all the notorious pirates to never plunder the Florida Keys, Black Caesar might be the most famous. His legend spans nearly two centuries and encompasses, at the bare minimum, two piratical figures who operated nearly 100 years apart. Both are linked to the Northern Keys in general and Elliott Key in particular. Legend has it that Caesar’s Creek and Caesar’s Rock, both found between Elliott and Old Rhoades keys, were named for the former slave turned pirate. What is confusing about this particular pirate is that when researching him, storytellers often confuse and mix the origin stories of both versions of the man, the myth, the pirate Black Caesar.

In his first incarnation, Black Caesar was an African chieftain captured by slave traders, locked up, and shipped to the auction blocks in the Americas. During the Atlantic crossing, the slave ship was swept against the reef during a hurricane. Two men reportedly survived the wreck. Though no records of such a shipwreck exist, the African chieftain and the only man it is said he would accept food or drink from, one of the crew members, escaped in a longboat and managed to find the safety of dry land. Some accounts say it was Elliott Key where the two landed, survived and turned to piracy.

It is this Black Caesar who would “join” the legion of Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, and serve as a trusted lieutenant, or so the story is often told. When Blackbeard’s pirate

ship was attacked by Lt. Robert Maynard of the Royal Army in November of 1718 off the coast of North Carolina’s Ocracoke Island, Blackbeard’s head was severed and hanged from the bowsprit of a Navy ship, as was the practice of the day. While there is no evidence of any pirate named Black Caesar in the historical record there was a “Cesar” recorded among those captured aboard Blackbeard’s ship.

Technically, he would have been a pirate.

While this seems to be the kernel of truth from which the “proof” of the infamous pirate arose, two things should be noted. First, it is thought that this Cesar was not some lieutenant in Blackbeard’s crew, but more likely one of the pirate’s trusted slaves. Second, Cesar was the most common name given to Carolina slaves, of which there were said to be several aboard Blackbeard’s ship.

The second version of Black Caesar is supposed to have been Henri Arnaut, a child born circa 1765 to slaves belonging to the Arnaut family. This Black Caesar would rise to power after a slave revolt, steal a Spanish ship circa 1805, and embark on a piratical career that is strikingly similar to that of the first specter of Black Caesar.

There is, however, less proof of this being an actual person than the infamous pirate’s first incarnation.

In 1775, somewhere between the tenures of the two legendary pirates, Bernard Romans applied the Black Caesar name to his “Maps of East and West Florida.” Why Romans decided to name a creek in the Northern Keys Black Caesar’s Creek and a rock in the middle of it Black Caesar’s Rock is unclear.

Some theories say the name was chosen because of a story heard through Bahamian oral tradition while others suggest the name was based on a pirate caricature portrayed in period plays.

An often overlooked twist on the Black Caesar story is that there is one documented account of an actual Black Caesar on Elliott Key, written by Kirk Munroe and published in 1886. Munroe makes particular mention of “a gigantic specimen of human ebony” named Black Caesar. Working in the pineapple fields at Elliott Key, Black Caesar would carry twice as much as every other toter — hauling as much as 500 pounds of pineapples at a time.

PUBLIC: ‘NO’ TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING Plan to build 5 units in Port Largo meets resistance

Once you make this decision, we’re stuck with it.”

County staff told the commissioners that chance to comment on the development of affordable housing would come after the grant is approved. However this particular piece of property, which is already properly zoned, wouldn’t trigger a traffic analysis.

Nancy Bean, an Upper Keys resident and spokesperson for a homeowners association, said, “We want to firmly state that we are totally against anything done in that area without community involvement.”

here are a few members of the public who don’t want to build affordable housing. Not even five units, not even on undeveloped property located next to the Key Largo Community Park. But on July 17, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners prevailed, and voted to approve going ahead with a grant request.

“All of us who live next to an empty lot feel a cloud hanging over our head.

We fear what may go there one day. Affordable housing or non-affordable housing, our preference is that nothing change,” said Councilman David Rice. “I recognize that human condition. I feel the same way. But we have a need, and affordable housing is our number one priority.”

The commission also approved the $1,500 application fee for the proposal to be submitted by Tuesday, Aug. 6. The land would be leased to the Monroe County Land Authority that would serve as both the developer and the operator of the affordable housing if the grant is approved.

The vote was unanimous to submit two proposals to the Florida Housing Finance Corporation — up to $2 million for land acquisition, and up to $8 million for affordable housing construction of 25 units spread over three parcels in the Keys, including the one in Key Largo.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recent announcement of $35 million set aside for the Keys to build affordable or workforce housing, is part of the Community Development Block Grant, Disaster Recovery Grant Program funded by the federal government. The county proposes to build five 3-bedroom units on the Key Largo site; eight 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom units on Conch Key; and 10 1-bedroom units at Howard’s Haven on Big Pine Key. The sites on Conch Key and Howard Haven are currently trailer parks.

Usually, the Florida Housing Finance Corporation acts like a bank by giving out loans. This program, using the CBDG-DRG grant, will be “forgiven” after 20 years.

The Key Largo site, located along Atlantic Boulevard, is currently zoned for 18 affordable housing units, but speakers at the July 17 meeting would rather have more parking or more park amenities.

In other news: • The county’s lease on the former Big Pine Road Prison for hurricane debris storage is set to expire. The College of the Florida Keys has expressed an interest in developing the site, according to college spokesman Frank Wood. He said that, according to state law, the college could be first in-line for the state-owned property. He said the FKCC is developing plans that could entail a sporting complex, motor vehicle tactical training, a sheriff substation, room for community meetings.

“Our goal is to start the discussion with stakeholders,” he said.

he colorful, captivating, and — police say — distracting LED mobile billboard trucks zooming around Key West have been officially banned by the city. At the July 16 city commission meeting, commissioners voted 4-0 (Commissioners Clayton Lopez and Gregory Davila were absent) to pass an ordinance that follows in the footsteps of ordinances passed in the cities of Honolulu and West Hollywood. The Key West language is modeled after the West Hollywood ordinance, and Assistant City Attorney Ron Ramsingh also included a preemptive clause.

“I included water-based mobile billboards in a proactive measure,” wrote Ramsingh in his executive summary, “The City of Miami Beach has been battling water-based mobile billboards

recently and the City of Key West received an inquiry into establishing a water-based mobile billboard business in the last few years.” Visitors to Miami may have seen the shoreline littered with LED advertisements on boats, and KWPD Captain Randy Smith, a supporter of the ordinance, said he was “pleased the ordinance will curb the marine side as well,” expressing concerns that South and North Roosevelt could follow the way of Miami, had Ramsingh not included them.

Smith and other KWPD officers have said that since the images change, pedestrians and vehicle drivers watch them — instead of the road. Smith said: “It’s similar to looking at your phone; it’s distracted driving.” Neon signs with flashing lights are already not permitted, per city ordinance, in Old Town Key West, so

this new ordinance follows suit.

Smith has also been on alert for the mobile billboard this week: “Three times I’ve been beside or behind it in traffic,” he said, “and I’m watching people watch the billboard … on Duval Street, we have pedestrians not looking at crosswalks when they cross the street.”

The commission concurred that the roving advertisements are a driving distraction and safety hazard. While this is good news for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, myriad local businesses that use the advertising service are sure to miss the exposure. LavenirLed, the company that owns the mobile billboard truck in Key West, will also no longer be able to operate in the Key West market. At least there’s still good old-fashioned print advertising.

PART 2

LEARNING TO DIVE SARAH THOMAS

I

f you missed moved down the last, from her secondinformafavorite island, tion-soaked Manhattan. She has worn many installment of hats: publicist, “Learning to tour guide, barDive,” in short, tender, teacher, and cat wrangler, I learned a lot about depth but editor seems to fit the best. and time and was humbled by the rigor of the dive test. The pool training was fun and informative, and it seemed pretty much as instructor John Brazau said: “The dive certification is about learning problem solving.”

Indeed, as we took to the water on the Phoenix this week, Southpoint Divers’ boat that is docked behind the Hyatt, I observed folks of a wide variety of abilities and experience hop in the water with tanks on their backs. But learning how to stay cool, calm, collected and oxygenated? That requires some training.

The boat was helmed by Drew, our captain for the day, along with crew Emily, John and Mike, my instructor. Mike (last name: Jackson) was patient and clear in instruction, with a good sense of humor (if his knowing smile indicated, yes, everybody makes a Michael Jackson comment, though based on physical attributes, family relation is unlikely). Mike was charged with instructing me while also guiding a curious couple, Cindy and Bill, from Tennessee (Go Vols!) who were new to diving.

As we approached Rock Key, Mike gave us the run-down on hand signals, reminded us of basic equipment knowledge, and got us fitted in fins, masks, tanks and BCDs (buoyancy control devices, aka, Aquaman-style inflating vests). We were ready to take the plunge! Er, awkwardly waddle to the end of the boat, where some of us stepped, and some of us face-planted, into the ocean.

Once in, we gave the “okay” signal (fist on top of head) and were ready to descend.

1 2 You know that feeling when you are going up in a plane, and what first is minor popping in your ears then increases to icepickstabby pain? So that happened.

Pretty quickly. But part of training is learning to clear your ears, by pinching your nose and lightly blowing, jiggling your jaw or swallowing. Experienced divers all have their own tricks to clear the Eustachian tubes, and shared them with me. John described the inner ear as like any muscle, one that you train and eventually cooperates. I was able to wiggle and blow (get your mind out of the gutter!) efficiently enough to get comfy and descend with my group, albeit a little slowly.

Once we got going, it felt fantastic. Trailing Mike along the ocean floor, being careful not to hit any coral, we glided along with fish and other marine life. Beautiful many-hued parrot fish (we saw blue, “stoplight,” and rainbow varieties) chomped on the coral with their oddly human-like teeth, and barracuda, yellowtail snapper, and even a ray or two glided around the group. Underwater, it was super calm, even if there was a little chop on the surface. The 35 minutes flew by, and before I knew it, Mike and I were on the surface practicing skills. We practiced sharing a regulator (the breathing piece), taking the gear on and off in the water and emergency towing. In a flash, the Phoenix was off to the next dive site.

We pulled up at Eastern Dry Rocks, another reef site only about 20 to 25 feet underwater. By now, my ears were popping, and my stomach was churning. The combination of the keel of the boat and swallowing some saltwater had me a little queasy, but I was eager to get back in the water. Our foursome (remember, everyone has to have a buddy — Mike was mine for the dive) headed down and once my ears adjusted, we were down for more adventuring. Cruising between coral heads, spying schools of fish and funky marine creatures (I saw a slug-like thing I want to call a “sea cucumber”) is transfixing.

Truly, it’s easy to forget time and any difficulty as a human moving through such an otherworldly environment. It seems diving is akin to yoga in that way: learning to remain calm in potentially adverse circumstances, focusing on relaxed breath instead of strain. I felt relaxed and comfortable.

Until we surfaced! Mike was helping me practice a few skills—I was about to manually inflate a surface marker buoy or SMB, and I said: “Mike, I’m about to puke.”

“Okay, I’m going to swim upstream,” he said calmly, ever the professional.

He swam upstream, and I lost lunch, and breakfast for good measure, in the next few minutes.

The sunny side? The fish seemed to be pleased, and there was no puke-shaming on the Phoenix! It seemed as regular an occurrence

as in the women’s room at the Green Parrot. John recommended ginger chews; Mike encouraged lots of water and looking at the horizon (a tried and true method my dad has encouraged since my bygone days of hurling on the cat to the Dry Tortugas. Memories!).

The even better news? I’m ready get back in the flippers! It’s rare that a person pukes and then says “That was super fun,” but perhaps diving is the exception.

If all goes well, Friday will be my last dive as a student, and then I may have the opportunity to try something more adventuresome as a properly certified diver. I’m planning to bring the newfound knowledge, enthusiasm … and ginger chews.

I

t was a dark and stormy night … actually it was a bright and early Key West morning, but I was ready for a dark ’n’ stormy. Fortunately, I was headed to Jamaica for 24 hours.

While the Florida Keys are a vacation destination for over 2 million travelers a year, one of the best things about living here is that we can be in a wildly different country over a weekend, or even for a day.

Jamaica is one of those destinations.

With its mountainous blue hills (yes, the ones where that damn fine coffee comes from), its extraordinary food and music, and its warm and friendly locals, it deserves more than a day. But if you only have a day to spare? It’s incredible how much Jamaica still has to offer. I had that opportunity last weekend, and, to quote locals, “Mi loike it.” A lot.

9:30 A.M. DEPART KEY WEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT 10 A.M. ARRIVE IN MIAMI* *UPPER KEYS READERS: START HERE! (Enjoy a coffee, a hearty breakfast and reading “A Brief History of Seven Killings,” a brilliant novel by Marlon James that narrates the Bob Marley assassination attempt through a fictional lens. Spoiler alert: it will take you longer than a layover, at 704 pages).

12:30 P.M. DEPART MIAMI FOR KINGSTON 2:15 P.M. ARRIVE IN KINGSTON 2:30 P.M. THE ADVENTURE BEGINS I got picked up from the airport by Chris Thompson from Juta Tours (Jamaican Union of Travelers Association), who has lived in Kingston for most of his life, and was knowledgeable and candid.

Chris and I talked family, music, religion — pretty much everything you aren’t supposed to talk about at bars — and the lyric “emancipate yourself from mental slavery,” which was actually first written by Marcus Garvey. Chris was great company and a brilliant driver. He also was my patois translator, and I credit him for the lines I use here.

3 P.M. THE BOB MARLEY MUSEUM Bob Marley grew up in a part of Kingston called Trench Town, a neighborhood that espouses the “blending of the rural and urban cultures.” It sits on the site of former livestock pens and grew into a famous neighborhood that many credit as the birthplace of reggae. Back in the ’60s in Trench Town, Marley went by “Robert,” eventually taking up the name “Bob” at the suggestion of a producer.

He recorded his first single at 16 and now has sold over 75 million records worldwide. He was also a catalyst of social change. When Marley moved into the Island Records house and studio on Hope Road, people questioned Rastas moving into the posh neighborhood. “I’m bringing the ghetto uptown,” said Marley.

The museum tour takes an hour and a half, through Marley’s home, where he recorded several albums (he also recorded at Tuff Gong studios, a site for another trip) and called home with wife Rita Marley. The pretty two-story home has been restored as it was when the Marleys lived there,

and the downstairs living spaces are adorned with gold records, Grammy awards and original tour posters. At the center of the story is the Rastafarian religion, to which Marley dedicated himself with the same fervor as he did his music. He was called “Skipper,” which signified his position in the religion.

Our tour guide Johnoy made the experience fun and fascinating, singing Bob Marley and the Wailers’ songs throughout, dropping knowledge bombs that spanned from the story behind Marley’s assassination attempt (the bullet that lodged in his elbow remained there for his life) to his life philosophy (life is only worthwhile if used to help others), to his early end (he died from rapidly spreading melanoma). On the light side, we also sang “One Love” together and learned nicknames for ganja (“Kaya,” also the name of a Wailers album, was my favorite). Highly recommended, and shoutout to Johnoy for being the best singing tour guide south of Key West.

touch, and it was definitely a deep tissue treatment, not for the thin-skinned. It felt great and loosened me up for a swim at the gorgeous pool and cocktail at the cabanas. The hotel also boasts a separate Sky Bar with another pool.

5 P.M. ARRIVE AT THE SPANISH COURT HOTEL The Spanish Court Hotel is welcoming and modern, located centrally (and across from a pretty thorough supermarket with ATM) in Kingston. I checked into my room and got ready to head to the spa for a relaxation massage. The massage therapist had an incredible

7:30 P.M. DINNER My travel companion (okay, boyfriend Andrew) and I enjoyed a tasty dinner at the Spanish Court’s Rojo Restaurant. The wait staff was friendly, and the food was decidedly not boring hotel food. I had a crisp green salad with shrimp, goat cheese, shaved veggies and candied walnuts and a tangy mustard vinaigrette.

Andrew had a jerk chicken wrap that was super moist and flavorful, of which I ate exactly half (sorry, babe). We had a nightcap of Appleton 12-year-old rum and called it a night. The next morning starts early!

10 P.M. LIGHTS OUT

7 A.M. PICK UP Chris arrived at 7 to take us on an adventure. We brought swim suits, towels and a change. Remember some cash to tip your drivers and tour guides. ATMs are few and far between. The drive out to YS Falls was long,

bumpy and beautiful. The small towns that dot the countryside evidence the country’s relative poverty, but I observed more simple living rather than extreme poverty. The facts hold this up: Jamaica is considered a middle income country — while the 15% poverty rate is a bit higher than the U.S. (12%), it’s significantly lower than neighboring countries Cuba and Haiti.

The towns are charming, colorfully painted and bustling with activity. Vendors set out their fruit and wares, doors and windows open. The everchanging landscape of lush countryside and small towns brings verdant context to the Buju Banton classic “Hills and Valleys.”

9:30 A.M. ARRIVE AT YS FALLS We took a bus pulled by a tractor up to YS Falls, part of the Black River. It was $20 to get into the park, where there are lots of places to swim and sun, gardens, refreshments and even a rope swing. We did the zipline through the canopy ($35 per person), which offered a great view of the foliage and falls below, as well as a real thrill on the ride over the falls. We relaxed in the natural pools and got Mother Nature’s massage under the falls. You could easily spend the day at YS Falls, but we had to keep it moving. After an hour and a half, we packed up and headed to Appleton Estate, about a half hour down the road.

11:30 A.M. ARRIVE AT APPLETON ESTATE The Estate’s “Appleton Experience” was one of the coolest distillery tours I’ve been on. At the heart of the experience were stories of Joy Spence, the first female master distiller in the world and the brilliant chemist behind Appleton Joy, their 25-year-old top-shelf blend. Our tour guide, also named Joy, guided us through the sights, scents and tastes of the distillery.

We started with chewing sugar cane, which has been harvested on the estate since its genesis in 1749. The estate was a sugar cane plantation before the distillery existed — since 1655.

We met Paz, the donkey that demonstrates how sugarcane was originally crushed; we tasted the (surprisingly delicious) molasses that functions as the base for the rum; we toured the (super hot) actual distillery and checked out the huge warehouse where barrels are stored.

The tasting concluded the tour, and we agreed

that the 12-year-old was far and away the favorite. The distillery has great food, but we opted to try out the authentic jerk pit experience on the way back to Kingston.

2 P.M. MURRAY’S FISH AND JERK HUT Murray’s Fish and Jerk hut rises out of the Jamaican countryside like a phoenix, emitting a curl of smoke and the scent of roasting meat.

The “hut” is big and open air with a thatched roof, and the meat is roasted on a grill over a wood fire — the “authentic” way. The chairs are made of barrels and the drinks are inexpensive and simple — we had Appleton Reserve and coconut water, which was dangerously smooth and light. On the menu? Jerk chicken, pork, rabbit, homemade sausage and whole roasted fish. The sausage and rabbit were our favorites, smoky and sweet, accompanied by festival (sweet fried bread), plantains and a raw veggie slaw.

3 P.M. THAT’S ALL, MON. Sad our 24 hours had come to a close, we packed it up and headed back to the airport.

Actually, that’s not entirely true — we opted to make a few pit stops. First we stopped by our new friend Joy’s bar on the way back, an unassuming rum shop built onto her house. She serves popular (and stiff) cocktails like “the steel bottom”—Campari and overproof white rum— which you can calm down with a floater of Red Stripe beer. It was like a perfect and bracing goodbye kiss from the island.

Finally, we stopped by the “duppy church,” (duppy means “ghost” in Jamaican patois), a beautiful, broken place with an above-ground cemetery. It served as a haunting reminder of how people remain in a place after they are gone — likewise, I imagine a place like Jamaica stays within a person for years to come. You’ll definitely want to stay at least another day, and maybe return forever. As Chris taught me to say, “Mi wa fi guh back a Jamrock.”

n July 16, Dr. Diane Adreon from the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) spoke in Marathon about how CARD can help autistic citizens and the community as a whole.

She said CARD is all about resources, organization, training and information that furthers the prosperity of autistic people. Services include consultations at schools about kids and programs, support groups, workshops, home visits and more.

“If you get on our email list, you’ll see all kinds of stuff we do,” said Adreon. “But there’s more — most of what we do are specific requests from families, schools or agencies and those are not announced. Those are just things we are running around and doing. For example, soon I’ll be training people at a hospital in Homestead.

The training is for medical staff so they can meet the needs of a patient with autism.”

Adreon has worked with people on the spectrum of autism and their families for 30 years and has been a part of CARD since it opened in 1993. She is part of CARD’s South Florida sector which is based at University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University.

(CARD’s main source of funding is state educational grants.)

CARD’s South Florida crew serves in Broward, Dade and Monroe counties. Team members from the organization have been coming to the Florida Keys periodically, but there are no physical offices for them here.

Keys resident Kara Durham has three children, two of them on the spectrum of autism.

“As soon as my son was diagnosed, a little after he turned 2, I dove into researching and learning,” she said, “Once he entered the public school system when he turned 3, I started learning a lot about the ins and outs of the school system and some red flags went up.

There were gaps and missing pieces with special needs education, so I went headfirst into advocacy.”

Adreon said CARD is a bridge of information that connects neurotypical people to their autistic family members, friends and coworkers. It also collaborates with local organizations such as the Autism Society of the Keys (ASK).

IN SUMMER BISTRO WRITES THE BOOK ON THE ART OF DINING

C

afé Sole sits on the corner of Southard and Frances like a grand dame sipping a glass of Sancerre in the shade. She’s cool, sophisticated and a perfect summer companion.

John and Judy Correa’s upscale neighborhood French-Caribbean bistro makes any evening feel like a special occasion. We were there on a quiet Tuesday evening, but the experience brought to mind a favorite aphorism, “Every day is a holiday, every meal a banquet.”

Café Sole continues to bring back locals and visitors for their intimate setting, with candlelight and ceiling fans, warm accents — their dining room is anchored by a stained glass triptych of rosettes and a peacock — and even warmer service. Our server, Nate Booton, was accommodating and professional. The service exudes the same Old World charm as the classics on the menu.

Nate was familiar with the wine list and ready to guide with recommendations; we ordered an excellent Sancerre from the Loire Valley, followed by a lovely, well-balanced Côtes du Rhone.

The experience extends beyond the wine service: Saganaki is doused in brandy and lit aflame tableside. It is decadent and briny, served with caper berries and warm pita. Luxurious favorites — escargot, foie gras on toast — dot the menu, along with beautiful preparations of fresh local seafood, including hog snapper, grouper and tuna.

The shrimp are Key West pinks; the conch is Bahamian.

We ordered what the house recommends: the beautiful conch and beef carpaccio, Chef Correa’s signature hog snapper preparation and a moist-inside, crispyoutside duck à l’orange. The conch carpaccio comes in tender, thinly shaved sheets, studded with capers and a bright pop of lime juice. The beef carpaccio is a classic preparation — delicate slices of beef dressed with creamy parmesan, crowned with a generous, peppery arugula salad. Both melt in the mouth.

The pan-fried hog snapper has that unmistakable sweet and subtle lobster-like flavor, complemented by a creamy red pepper hollandaise. The duck was perfectly cooked, and the sauce a perfectly, not cloyingly, sweet finish to the savory meat. Both entrees, as is the Sole way, were accompanied by a rain-

bow of mashed potatoes, lima beans, shredded carrots, rice and a roasted tomato. The accompaniments make it a well-rounded and filling plate, warming in the way that a homecooked meal is, if your housemate happens to be an award-winning chef.

The diners at Café Sole have quiet conversations in the candlelight, to the soundtrack of sleepy soft jazz and a full moon in the July sky. As we finished the last of our wine, Nate brought the “Quatro,” an excellent sampling of desserts, including a pleasingly tart Key lime pie with toasted peaks of merengue, a velvety crème brulee, and decadent petite tastes of white and dark chocolate zabaglione. Capped off by expertly pulled shots of espresso, the meal was a lesson in elevation: eating not only to live, but to practice the art of being deliciously alive.

If any friends are reading this: I’m always up for an invite to Café Sole. In fact, I’m plot-

ting my return: first the baked artichokes stuffed with crabmeat, then the grouper romesco in a spicy roasted red pepper and hazelnut sauce, and if I’m feeling ambitious, perhaps a nightcap of bananas foster. And of course: the Sancerre.

The major reason why I joined the Military was to be able to pay for college. Another reason was because the military not only provided me with many benefits like health care, but it also gave me an opportunity to grow and become a better person.

Were you married before or after joining the military?

And how long have you been married?

After joining the military. We’ve been married for 5 years.

How many years have you served in military? 7 years Ever been to Florida Keys or Key West before your current assignment? I’ve never been to the Florida Keys before my current assignment.

Did you choose Key West or were you just assigned here?

I chose Key West.

What were you first thoughts when hearing you were coming to the Keys. All I thought was fishing, good food and relaxation. (The perfect combination for shore duty.)

Any hobbies? Playing soccer, ping pong and listening to music.

What are your favorite things to do? Spend time with my wife and eat.

Have you ever attended Fantasy Fest and if so what were your initial thoughts? No, but I will definitely go before I transfer.

What do you like most about the Keys? The laid-back vibe, and the fishing is great!

What do you like most about your assignment? I get to spend more time with my family.

What would you change about living here in Key West if you had the power to do so? I would lower the price of food and housing. It is very expensive to live down here.

Any advice to give other military seeking assignment here? Find housing before you move down here and have some funds saved up. Also, get an Amazon Prime account.

What do you like most about living here? I get to enjoy delicious food, the nightlife and the watersports are awesome.

There is always something to do here in Key West.

STACEY PILLARI PRACTICES INNER STRENGTH AND OUTER CONFIDENCE

he Sanskrit word for “strength” is tattooed across Stacey Pillari’s wrist, a permanent token of who she is and what she has overcome. Pillari has become adept at turning trauma into purpose, training extensively to become a competitive weightlifter and guiding other women along that path. A sexual assault survivor, Pillari says of her tattoo: “This is a reminder that I no longer have to be a victim and that I am going to be as strong as possible, inner and outer.

It’s what set me on my path.”

Her success led to promotional sponsorships, a coveted spot on the Adidas Powerlifting Team and her own clothing line, Built by Sacrifice. Despite her upward trajectory, outreach took precedence for Pillari, “I realized that I wasn’t enjoying the self-gratifying elements of competing. What I was enjoying the most was inspiring and motivating other people. That’s what drove me.”

Respecting that drive, Pillari retired from competing, sold her clothing line and focused solely on coaching. It’s a path and a practice she continues today as coach of Key West High School’s first ever girls’ weightlifting team. “Strength yields power, power yields confidence.

Inner strength and outer confidence are what I want for these young women,” said Pillari.

Since taking the position last fall, Pillari has seen six members of her team compete in district championships and two in regionals. Pillari’s approach to coaching is equal parts sport and spirit, “Everything you do has to come from the heart or it’s empty. I want to inspire people and the youth are most important because as adults we’re harder to reach,” said Pillari.

The warmth and dedication Pillari brings to coaching extends to her work as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker.

“Whether it’s training or real estate, it’s a matter of making people feel like they can trust you. They have to feel like you are devoted to them and that they can count on you to be there.”

In addition to devoting herself to human clients, Pillari volunteers with the Key West Mounted Police. Originally from North Carolina, Pillari was introduced to horses by her uncle, Bobby Hodges, who trained racehorses for the late actor Burt Reynolds. An equine

trainer certified in therapeutic riding, Pillari previously partnered with the North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center to empower children with autism to find healing on horseback.

Pillari also shares strength through song. An accomplished blues singer, she has opened for the Neville Brothers and graced the stage of Nashville’s famed Tootsies Orchid Lounge. Pillari will sing the National Anthem at next month’s MMA Fights at Truman Waterfront Park, and perhaps a spontaneous blues standard on the streets of Old Town. “If I get brave enough, I want to walk down Duval Street and start singing ‘Stormy Monday’ a cappella to see how people respond.”

Pillari came to Key West after years of living in Bocas Del Toro, Panama, where she owned and operated a gym.

The desire to simplify and immerse herself in nature prompted her move to Central America. “People there work to live, not live to work. I wanted to show my son that the simple things can be more wondrous than any material things.” Pillari credits her husband Frank, whom she met by chance (or fate) on a flight to the Bahamas, with supporting her dreams and being her partner in adventure. “He’s always game,” she said.

Pillari’s approach to life, and one she fosters within her weightlifting team, is perseverance. “If there’s something you see as an obstacle, you don’t stop. You look at it and say ‘How do I get around it, over it, under it, through it?’ There’s no stopping,” she said. The mother of two and grandmother (!) of three shows no signs of stopping, or slowing down.

Pillari, a born ocean lover, plans to be active until the very end. “When my time comes, I don’t want to be in a hospital. I don’t even want to be in my bed. I want to be in my bathing suit and a snorkel mask among the sharks on Looe Key. Let me go, leave me to the water,” said Pillari.

With a long list of both trials and triumphs behind her, Pillari looks to the future for inspiration. “I don’t look back.

I reflect, and I’m grateful, but I always look forward. I want as many chapters in my life book as possible.” And Key West finds itself fortunate to be among her pages.

‘WE’RE COMING BACK!’ 76 more canals to be cleaned

O

n July 17, Monroe County announced it had secured permission to clean an additional 76 canals. One-hundred and seventy two canals have already been cleared of hurricane debris, and five out of 10 canals have been cleared of sediment.

“For residents who say we haven’t cleared their canal yet, we’re coming back,” said Rhonda Haag, the county’s director of sustainability.

She said the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service approved the extra 76 canals (it turned down 148 in the same application cycle) because the county submitted extra documentation.

“Some of the debris was covered by sediment, which wasn’t visible on the underwater sonar, so we went back with an underwater camera to document the debris,” she said.

About $28 million of the original $49.2 million grant has been spent. The cleanup for the additional 76 canals, and anticipated okay to clear sediment from five more canals, would cost about $6 million.

Haag said that would leave about $15 million of the original grant unused. She said the county would extend the contract and could complete the work by Dec. 31, 2019.

A breakdown of the canals to be cleared: • 37 canals in the Lower Keys • 2 canals on Big Pine Key • 17 canals on Conch, Key Largo and in Tavernier • 7 canals in Islamorada • 13 canals in Marathon Haag said the final two canals on Big Pine Key are the only ones remaining on the to-be-cleaned list. There are five canals still undergoing sediment removal, or dredging, on Big Pine Key. Monroe County Commissioner David Rice praised the department for its efficient, timely work and cooperation with Adventure Environmental and Wood Environmental and Infrastructure Solutions.

lorida’s two-day lobster mini-season arrives near the end of July, and those on the hunt for the savory crustaceans should know there are rules.

Those cited by law enforcement for violating the regulations can choose to fight the allegations in court – and if they lose, penalties for each violation can include up to 60 days in jail and fines up to $500.

The two-day season runs from 12:01 a.m. July 24 to 11:59 p.m. July 25.

In Monroe County, the harvest limit is six lobsters per person per day. A lobster’s carapace, or body, must be greater than three inches long for harvest; divers must have a measuring device with them in the water to measure each lobster.

A lobster’s tail cannot be separated (wrung) from the body while the harvester is in or on the water; lobsters must be brought back to land in whole condition.

When the tail is separated from the body on land, it must be 5.5 inches or greater. Harvesting eggbearing lobsters and spearing lobsters is not allowed. .“Ideally, people would not violate the rules, which are established to protect and maintain our sensitive marine environ-

ment,” said State Attorney Dennis Ward. “But if they do, in most cases, we will offer options to the offenders that are meant to both send them a message and to raise their awareness of the importance of preserving our resources.”

Ward’s office has developed baseline plea offers for those cited for violating the lobster regulations.

One could get 10 days in jail for one lobster over the limit, 10 days for one out-of-season lobster and 10 days for one speared lobster (in each case, it’s three days more for each additional illegal lobster). If the violation is for spearing a lobster combined with another violation, the jail time for the speared lobster is in addition to the jail time for the other violation.

If an offender has two undersized lobster, adjudication could be withheld. For a third undersized lobster, the offer is 10 days in jail and for each undersized lobster after that, it’s three more days.

Having a wrung (detached) tail on the water could be punishable by two days in jail (two days for each wrung tail up to 20 lobsters).

For 20 to 24 wrung tails, it’s 60 days. Twenty-five or more wrung tails could mean 364 days in jail.

Taking an egg-bearing lobster, or stripping a lobster’s eggs from its body, could bring five days in jail. Each additional egg-bearing lobster or lobster stripped of its eggs could be three days.

All offers include probation in addition to any jail time. In addition, recreational harvesters could have their Florida saltwater fishing license and lobster endorsement revoked for a year, and commercial harvesters could have their license suspended.

There could be additional penalties for taking lobster from protected areas of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The locations of those protected areas can be found at the marine sanctuary website, floridakeys. noaa.gov. Also, unincorporated Monroe County and the municipalities of Key West, Marathon, Islamorada, Key Colony Beach and Layton have local rules prohibiting lobstering nearshore. The specifics for each area are on the marine sanctuary’s website.

The regular recreational and commercial lobster season starts Aug. 6 and ends March 31.

“This is an opportunity for not only our veterans to ask questions about VA healthcare, but also for local medical providers wanting to participate as caregivers to make inquiries as well,” said Cathy Crane, director of Monroe County Veterans Affairs.

The Mission Act strengthens Veterans Affairs’ ability to deliver trusted, easy access, high-quality care through facilities, telehealth, and in communities, providing care for veterans where and when they need them.

Florida Bay dependson EvergladesRestoration Over one hundred years ago, as the first shovel of muck was removed from the River of Grass to turn Florida’s swamp into liquid gold, the state embarked on a transformational approach to water management.

A vision of astounding proportions was undertaken to attract Americans to relocate to Florida. With laser focus and intense ferocity, Florida’s wetlands were dredged, canals were created, and water flow was rerouted to make way for an early-50’s perception of the good life in the sunshine state: real estate boomed and agriculture was king.

For over a century, the best and brightest minds have worked under the supposition that water is best when it is managed in support of urban development, jobs, commerce, and

agriculture. These factors have been driving the ship as Florida leadership has wrangled water to accommodate their own notion of progress.

“Meanwhile water quality, ecological diversity, conservation, and preservation have been an absolute afterthought.”

Much of this progress-focused water management policy has been financially and politically driven by special interest groups who help define progress and thus easily gain the upper hand in manipulating water policy to suit their narrow agendas.

The replumbing of Florida seems a distant problem for the Florida Keys, however, as we observe the changes in

the pristine waters of the Florida Bay, we come to understand that every rivulet of water, diverted from its intended southerly flow, is a drop that starves the Bay of dynamic fresh water influx.

The concept of Everglades Restoration was codified in 2000 and encompasses a web of projects to restore a natural water flow across the state. Preservation of the Florida Bay simply can not exist without completion of a much greater state-wide Restoration effort.

Monroe County is obliged to acknowledge that the water woes facing other Florida coastlines, are intrinsically our own. Everglades Restoration and South Florida water management must be executed with expediency, efficiency and accuracy if Florida Bay is to continue to thrive.

NATURAL WATER FLOW Historically, water from the Kissimmee River Basin flowed south, overflowing Lake Okeechobee, to continue to the southern shores of the state and into Florida Bay.

Population growth, farming, and urban development disrupted historic water flow. Today, Lake Okeechobee is diked.

When levels get too high, water is dumped east and west to tide, while the Florida Bay waits for rain.

THE HISTORY OF GREEN KEY LIME PIE

R

esidents of the Florida Keys know Key lime pie is yellow, but if you follow #keylimepie on Instagram or find yourself lost in the sweet section of a Las Vegas buffet, David Sloan you are likely to encounter an unsightly, green, glowing dessert claiming to be Florida’s official pie. Unsuspecting diners grab a serving with the belief they are about to ingest a slice of paradise, as visiting Conchs turn up their noses in disgust and wonder, “How did such an atrocity come to be?” Let’s journey back into The Key Lime Pie Hole and discover the history of green Key lime pie.

Our story starts with a color problem.

Persian Limes (Citrus x latifolia) and Key limes (Citrus x aurantifolia) are green when they first appear on the tree, and stay green as they start to mature. When limes reach peak ripeness, their color starts to change, and both Key limes and Persian limes turn yellow. This is common knowledge if you have a lime tree growing in your yard, but yellow limes are something grocery store shoppers rarely, if ever, encounter.

Limes grow in warm climates, so most of the country consumes limes shipped from out of state. Shipped limes are picked before peak ripeness while green, and though this sacrifices flavor and juice yield, it extends shelf life, minimalizes denting and bruising, and helps people tell them apart from lemons. The practice has created a nation of consumers who believe limes are green and lemons (which are shipped before peak ripeness too) are yellow. This belief paved the way for the green goblin on the Vegas buffet.

Key lime pie is yellow, but the color has nothing to do with the fruit or its juice - the rich yellow color comes from egg yolks. The Works Project Administration did a fine job marketing Key lime pie as a cultural treat, and when the Overseas Highway finally provided a continuous run from Miami to Key West in 1938, roadside diners catering to tourists opened, and Key lime pie became mandatory fare. This is when wary tourists who knew limes were green believed they were being duped when yellow pie was served. Some thought there had been a mix-up with their order, and many assumed they were being served lemon pie. Most visitors had never seen yellow limes before, and upon learning these were the limes that made their yellow pie, they assumed the juice was responsible for the color and misconceptions started to spread.

Limited commercial availability of real Key limes made them a bit of a delicacy. The earliest reference I’ve found to the greening of Key lime pie appeared in a 1941 Miami Herald story in which columnist Helen Muir describes a pie man who had friends visiting from New England yearning for a taste of local lime pie. With no limes available, the man created a pie with lemons and a little green food coloring. His friends raved about the dessert and claimed “a lemon pie never tasted that good in a million years.“ Visitors returning from the Keys with real Key limes followed suit, and often added green food coloring to their pies so guests didn’t think they were being served an inferior lemon pie. Florida restaurants joined the food coloring game for similar reasons, and by 1959, green lime pie was preferred by people like Mrs. M. S. of Tampa who wrote

to the Tampa Bay Times food editor, “I am a new resident and would appreciate a recipe for green lime pie which does not look like lemon pie.”

The green Key lime pie craze swept the nation, with recipes spreading from Atlanta to Baltimore to Detroit and beyond. Eventually, the Conchs had enough and let the world know how they felt. A 1966 Miami Herald headline read “Green Key Lime Pie? – NEVER!” and ever since the Conchs drew a line in the sand, visiting food writers have taken great pleasure in shaming anyone who dares to add green coloring to the native dessert. The backlash reached a frenzy in 1980, but green Key lime pie refused to die. Even Publix joined the green shaming game with a 1998 advertisement saying “green Key lime pie is about as close to authentic as Key West is to Katmandu,” yet 21 years later, the green glow of artificially colored Key lime pies on Instagram and Las Vegas buffets persists.

They say, “If you can’t beat them, join them.” I’m pleased to announce that two Key West establishments are bringing green Key lime pie back, but they are not using a single drop of food coloring to do it. These Key lime pies are environmentally green, and a portion of proceeds from every slice you enjoy will help plant a new Key lime tree in the Florida Keys. Mary Ellen’s Bar is offering hand-made, small batch, gourmet Key Lime Pie Holes made by yours truly. Smokin’ Tuna Saloon has enrolled several Key lime menu items for the cause, including a killer Key lime pie. Stop in and enjoy them both frequently. Green Key lime pie has been a scourge to our society for nearly 80 years, but finally, there is a green Key lime pie that everybody in The Florida Keys can get behind.

What is something that you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? I know now that junior year is the hardest year of the four — like everyone told me.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS? I’m involved in swimming, peer mentoring, NHS, AVID and culinary. Swimming is important because it’s my favorite sport; peer mentor and NHS are important because they help me for college and community service; culinary is significant to me because I love to cook; AVID helps me with college and getting ready for admissions.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to college.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I like to go to the pool with my friends in my free time.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? I don’t know if I’ll live in the Keys when I graduate because it’s very expensive, and I want to see other places.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I hope to be in medical school or in residency, or if I end up not going the medicine route, I hope to have a good job and family.
