W

ith all kinds of special events planned for the Fourth of July holiday countywide, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office expects traffic to be very heavy through Monday, July 8.

The sheriff’s office will have extra officers on the water and on the highway in an effort to keep residents and visitors safe.

If you plan to drive anywhere in or out of the county, make sure you plan extra time for your trip.

Traffic enforcement deputies will be on the roads watching for impatient and unsafe drivers. Don’t pass in no-passing zones or in center turn lanes or you are likely to get a ticket.

Also, if you plan to drink alcohol, make sure to designate a sober driver – for your car or your boat – to make sure you get home safely.

Leave the fireworks and explosive firecrackers to the professionals this holiday. Illegal explosive firecrackers could be confiscated and the person with the fireworks could be charged with a state violation.

The sheriff’s office recommends that those setting off legal fireworks be courteous and do so at a reasonable hour. Each year the office receives numerous complaints about fireworks late at night and early in the morning; those calls can keep deputies from responding to others.

The sheriff’s office also asks that those celebrating take a few moments to clean up after themselves; discard trash properly, in a trash can or a recycling container. It isn’t fair to leave it on the ground or in the water for someone else to clean up, and violators could be charged with littering. When disposing of fireworks, however, make sure they have cooled first so you don’t start a fire in a trash can or trash bag.

Traffic note: A parade in Key Largo on July 4 is expected to cause traffic congestion. Northbound traffic will be closed at MM 99 from 9:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. All traffic will then be diverted into southbound lanes starting at 9:45 a.m. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will last about two hours. The highway will return to normal traffic patterns by 1 p.m. Those who can should avoid traveling through that area between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you have to travel through that area during those times, plan extra time and expect slowdowns.

The FWC Python Action Team has removed the program’s 500th invasive Burmese python from the wild.

Two women captured the snake on June 25 at the Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area. It was 9 feet, 10 inches long and weighed 20 pounds, 14 ounces.

ressure put on by the village, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and residents over the Fills has drawn some action from Florida Department of Transportation — at least for the short term until a long-term plan is hashed out.

FDOT is immediately allowing the village to control the amount of parking and areas of access on stateowned property at the Fills. On Tea Table and Lignumvitae Keys, parking will be allowed only on the four areas with paved driveway aprons, with space available for 15 to 18 passenger vehicles in each of those areas.

Visitors will be allowed to walk from the parking areas to desired picnicking spots.

In addition, no parking signs are being installed and vehicular access to no-parking areas is blocked with a series of 900-pound barriers. Near the bike path, cones will be installed with ropes or tape to keep vehicles from entering no-parking zones. In total, 90 parking spaces will be available at the Fills — an 80% reduction.

The area on the oceanside of Lignumvitae Key near the south end of the Fills is completely blocked off due to erosion.

Along with parking restrictions, there will be increased village staff from July 4-7 to manage traffic, take care of trash and inform people when parking areas are filled. Parking at the Indian Key Fill boat ramp will be managed by on-site staff, but no cones or barricades will be placed.

Six portable toilets will be delivered to the Fills for at least the next month with twice-daily cleanings scheduled on high-traffic days.

“I think we have a very good start,” Mayor Deb Gillis said as she addressed the public during the June 27 village council meeting. “This has been a very long time coming, and it can’t be fixed overnight. But we can put in quick fixes. For us to get this far is good.”

FDOT’s decision to give immediate control of parking and access to the Fills comes amid major concerns surrounding the trashing and overcrowding seen — especially during weekends and holidays. On June 21, Sheriff Rick Ramsay invited state officials and the village to discuss safety and sanitation issues. Out of the meeting came commitments by FDOT District 6 Secretary James Wolfe for a study to determine if a speed reduction to 45 mph and nopassing zones should be implemented.

All these solutions will be evaluated during and after the July 4th holiday. A long-term parking and management plan has been designed

by Islamorada’s public works director for submittal to FDOT with a lease application.

“I couldn’t be happier with the position we’re in now,” Vice Mayor Mike Forster said. “Local representatives and state agencies are listening.”

Forster said he would like to see paid parking on the Fills to get some cost-recovery back to enforcement.

Councilman Ken Davis credited Forster’s emails to Tallahassee and Kevin Thibault, DOT secretary, in getting swift action toward a short-term solution.

“If you hadn’t gotten online and sent emails to Tallahassee, we wouldn’t be where we are now,” he said.

“A

ll right guys, we’re here — Alligator Reef. It’s a nice ledge, and we’ve got two groups, so let’s split up and go both ways,” says Mike Goldberg, owner of Key Dives in Islamorada. “Pool’s open!”

But tonight’s night dives aren’t like the others. Key Dives’ staff notice a young green sea turtle, which they’ve named Allie (after the reef she lives on), sick and debilitated.

She has tumors on her eyes blocking her sight and on her flippers impeding her swimming. She tugs at their heartstrings.

Key Dives staff member John Bruen calls the Sea Turtle Stranding Hotline. The Turtle Hospital dispatchers give the dive shop specific instructions on how to bring Allie up to the boat safely and under the hospital’s permit.

As the sun sets, the divers enter the water in groups. With the Turtle Hospital’s directions in mind, they fan out in search of Allie. As the main group swims farther from the boat, they hear three clear clanks of metal on metal. After a pause, again, the three clanks — lead weights against the boat’s ladder: the diver recall system. Someone’s found her.

Up on the boat deck, Joel Gregory, a rehabilitator from the Turtle Hospital, arranges a small green turtle into a plastic tub with wet towels to keep her moist. Justin Benson, who actually found Allie, says, “We found her 5 minutes and 39 seconds into our dive.”

Cortney Benson, Justin’s sister and the marine conservation coordinator at Key Dives, adds “Now that’s efficiency!” Goldberg looks on with amazement. “I’ve been diving for 33 years, and how many of these turtles have I seen and never thought to coordinate with the Turtle Hospital to help. But now I will.”

With Benson running the environmental efforts at Key Dives, the shop has been pushing more and more into conservation. “We’re like a family here and we have these crazy ideas. We aren’t making money on them; we just want to see our reefs healthy, and we have an owner who is super on board.” Goldberg says, “Why wouldn’t you be? It just makes sense to protect our oceans, to do what we can.”

Fast forward a week, and Bette Zirkelbach, manager at the Turtle Hospital, describes what’s next for Allie. “She’s probably 7 to 8 years old. Juvenile. Moderate tumor load — they’re overgrown on one eye and on her fins. That would impede her swimming and her feeding.” After a CT scan to diagnose internal tumors, Allie undergoes several surgeries to remove her tumors, including a chemotherapy drug for her eyes.

The treatment can stop eye tumor regrowth 76% of the time. “It’s a very exciting time in sea turtle medicine,” adds Zirkelbach.

Zirkelbach estimates that 50% to 70% of the green sea turtles in the Keys have the virus that causes these tumors. It’s a fibropapilloma virus like herpes. Gregory adds that scientific studies have been done and continue to be conducted indicating that green sea turtles like Allie seem more susceptible to these kinds of tumors around

developed nations. “With fresh water efflux — nitrates and phosphates — the seagrass feeds on it, and the turtles feed on that, and it makes them immuno-compromised.”

Allie will remain at the hospital for nine months to one year to check for tumor regrowth before she’s released. This is standard for all turtles admitted to the Turtle Hospital. “This isn’t where it ends for us,” says Benson. “We want to be financially supporting Allie and the hospital throughout her care. We want to be a part of it all, including her big send-off. And, hopefully, we’ll see her on night dives again after she’s released.”

“I love when people see how much work we put into a turtle,” Zirkelbach said, “and it makes them care not just for turtles but for the ocean. It gives me hope.”

To raise money toward care for Allie and the other patients at the Turtle Hospital, Goldberg launched a donation page at https://www.gofundme.com/allieturtle.

If you see a turtle in distress (floating, cannot dive, entangled, or rapid breaths), do not touch it. All species of sea turtle are protected by state and federal laws and require a permit to be handled. The best course of action is to call the 24/7 Stranding Hotline 305-481-7669, the FWC 888-404-FWCC, or radio the Coast Guard on VHF channel 16, and the Turtle Hospital will be contacted.

Then, keep an eye on the turtle and stay with it until help arrives. Zirkelbach says of these calls, “the reward is saving the most ancient animal known to man, and you get to name the turtle you save. How cool is that!”

.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell walked up to the gates of the Homestead shelter for unaccompanied migrant children on June 28. Flanking her were several Democratic presidential candidates who were coming off a debate the night before in Miami.

Around them were a swarm of media, as well as demonstrators chanting, “shut it down.”

Mucarsel-Powell has toured the facility once before — it’s where 2,700 migrant children as young as 13, from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala are located. Mucarsel-Powell said she has a special place in her heart for these children as she came to the U.S. from Ecuador with her sisters and mother in search of better opportunities.

On the Monday before the Democratic debate in Miami, she called on the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to visit the facility, which is run by the for-profit Caliburn International, during their time in South Florida.

And several did.

But the candidates who came — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York; U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, of California; Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana; Julian Cástro, former U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development; and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper — weren’t allowed

a tour. Upon entering a building at the front of the property, they exited and took to the podium out by the road to speak.

“I know that as they continue their campaign trail, they will not forget what they experienced this morning,” Mucarsel-Powell said as she addressed the media. “I know that we’re going to take on the White House, and I’m confident knowing we have incredible candidates that will be able to run this country to deal with the immigration problem we have and put the priority — the safety of our kids — first.”

Mucarsel-Powell, who represents western Miami-Dade, Homestead and the Florida Keys, has sounded the alarm on child separation issues and what’s going on at the Homestead facility — specifically the White House’s lack of a hurricane preparedness plan for the detention facility, along with the living conditions inside.

During a May 29 visit, she says she was explicitly told that “there is no plan in place to evacuate or relocate the children prior to a natural disaster.”

“The absence of foresight and coordination to effectively prepare for a disaster is irresponsible and is needlessly endangering the lives of thousands of children,” she wrote to the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Mucarsel-Powell wanted a final version of the

evacuation and relocation plan by June 12. That never came.

Mucarsel-Powell was joined

by South Florida U.S. Reps. Donna Shalala and Debbie Wasserman Schultz recently in calling for a closure of the Homestead facility.

She’s also called for the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar for the “gross mishandling of the facility, the failure to provide a safe and secure environment for migrants, the lack of an adequate hurricane preparedness plan and the deaths of several children while in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.”

“We are imprisoning kids for profit,” Mucarsel-Powell said.

Gillibrand said she’s upset over the fact there’s no plan to bring families back together again.

“This is about children. I cannot tell you how angry it makes me when you lock up a child and deny them time they need to play outside, the time they need to be with their families,” she said.

While many have seen the candidates going at each other in debates, Buttigieg said they’re all on the same side when it comes to the way the country should care for the most endangered and vulnerable.

“We have a moral obligation to support them,” he said.

BRIEFLY Wild Bird event at Islamorada Library On Monday, July 8, at 1 p.m., Florida Keys Wild Bird Center staff will give a presentation geared toward schoolage children at Islamorada Library.

The presentation will include how they rescue, rehabilitate, and release birds, and give the kids advice for if they find an injured bird. Conditions permitting, staff will bring a bird to show the children. This program is free and part of Islamorada Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Program for Children, “A Universe of Stories.”

Preservation society features recorded interview with guide The Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys’ July program will be a viewing of a recorded interview of Peter Perdue by “K” Wilkinson. Perdue was a well-known back country guide out of Ocean Reef. He grew up in the Keys, and in this interview, talks about surviving the 1935 Hurricane, among other topics. The program will be Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. at the Key Largo Library. The public is invited, and admission is free.

Cleanup planned at Sea Oats Beach FIU’s Center for Coastal Oceans Research and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary will conduct a cleanup of Sea Oats Beach in Islamorada on Saturday, July 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Loggerhead turtles are using sea oats as a nesting beach and the goal is to make sure it is clean for them.

rtist Harry Sonntag came to Key Largo and settled just north of the Mandalay Marina in the late 1940s. He built a shack from driftwood and tarpaper close to a small cove where he not only fished, but also bathed.

Sonntag’s seaside shack served as both home and his art gallery. As his collection of Key Largo watercolors grew, so did his desire to display them. Sonntag approached the owner of an old Key lime packing house about using the abandoned structure. The owner told Sonntag he could use the building free of charge and Sonntag opened the Key Largo Art Gallery in 1951.

The gallery, one of the Keys’ earliest, would have been located at approximately MM 98.2. While hours were arbitrary and depended on Harry’s mood, prices were a different story and ranged between $55 and $65. Patrons making lower offers were promptly ignored.

On Sunday, July 6, 1952, a story titled “Harry J. Sonntag Lives for Art Alone” ran in the Miami Daily News. “Art,” Mr. Sonntag said, “is the universal language, and my desire is to bring beauty to the multitudes, so that people may realize how lovely is this world.”

hen Branson Rector founded his nonprofit Veterans Ocean Adventures 10 years ago, he was focused on giving back to his fellow service members. “I love being on the water; it’s where I feel truly at ease,� says Rector. “And, it’s so great to share that feeling with others in the service. Now, look at us, 10 years later.�

Rector is all smiles as he calls Ray Kooser to stand up in front of the group with him. Kooser is the general manager of Angler House Marina in Islamorada, where Rector and his VOA buddies have just kayaked all morning through the mangroves. Angler House and its Keys location is a perfect setting for the Miami-based group’s ocean adventures in the Keys. “They’re terrific. There’s a lot of venues in the Keys, and the Keys are pretty friendly,� says Rector, “but because they’re a private club for locals only, they’re not overrun with people. They give us access to their kayaks, and their members welcome us with lunch and use of the pool.

We really feel at home.�

And that feeling didn’t happen by accident. Rector tells the crowd of veterans at lunch, “Ray told us we should just get a small banner with our VOA logo and hang it permanently at the marina. ‘Consider this your home,’ he said. Those are really touching words for me.� Rector unveils a wooden plank with the VOA logo emblazoned on it. “Angler House has been so welcoming, so I thought I’d do better than a vinyl sign and present them with a plank.� It’s a wooden sign made by Tony Ernest, a veteran who uses natural materials like wood and metal to create “art with a purpose.� Rector special-ordered this plank and five others from Ernest’s non-profit Veteran Earth. “This is an old Navy tradition,� explains Rector. “Back when ships were wooden and had wooden decks, when a ship was commissioned, it’d go on its first workup. The crew on that maiden voyage was considered the ‘plank owners’ or ‘plank holders.’ These plank holders were considered integral in getting the ship ready for its deployments. “Then, in 20, 30, 40 years, when the ships were retired, the Navy Historical Society would take up the planks, find the original crew, and present them to them with a certificate for being the plank holders of that particular ship.� Rector explains how the very symbolic and special tradition continues today, despite ships no longer being made of wood. In February, as the VOA celebrated its 10th anniversary, Rector gave five planks to the people he considers the plank holders for the VOA, those who were significant at the start of his dream. And on this day, he gives the sixth to Kooser. “They’re our Keys outstation, and we couldn’t do what we do without them,� says Rector. Kooser immediately accepts the plank, brings it to the bar, and nails it into the post. “Welcome home! You’re always welcome here.�

A closer look at the coming FEMA flood maps Editor’s note: This is the second story about potential changes to flood insurance rates based on new FEMA maps. Part 1 appeared on June 20 and is also available at keysweekly.com

“Get flood insurance now. And get an elevation certificate.”

For months now, Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers has been repeating the same mantra about insurance and elevation. Why? Well, officials are telling homeowners who are “naked” now — who have no flood insurance — they can buy a policy to keep insurance rates low before the new FEMA maps are finalized. Drafts of those maps, which the federal agency has been purportedly working on for four years, are expected to be released “soon.”

Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) were instituted in the Keys in 1975. How it affects homeowners will depend on whether the houses were built pre-FIRM or post-FIRM. And it will affect those homeowners with a mortgage who are required to have flood insurance.

Owners of stilt homes built after 1975 have less to worry about. Although the new FEMA maps may reveal a foot or two difference in base flood elevation, insurance policy costs are not expected to spike; rather they will rise gradually. However, the new FEMA flood maps are of particular interest to owners of pre-FIRM homes.

Pre-FIRM homes with a flood policy are currently subsidized and, in the absence of a certificate of elevation, are charged the highest base rate. (With a certificate of elevation that exceeds the neighborhood’s base flood elevation, however, the homeowner could earn a flood insurance policy rate break.) On average, the cost is $2,900 a year; whether the home is 4 feet above or 4 feet below the base flood elevation, it makes no difference.

So long as the home is continuously insured, the homeowners will pay roughly the same rate.

If, however, the policy lapses, and the homeowners choose to re-insure, they will have their flood policies recalculated using information from the new FEMA maps and they will be much higher. This would also be the case for the new buyers of that lapsed policy home.

How many Keys homes were built pre-FIRM? According to the county, of the approximately 24,000 homes in unincorporated Monroe County, about 6,500 were built before the flood maps were instituted. That means as many as 27% of Keys homes could be built below base flood elevation. Numbers were not available at press time for pre-FIRM homes within the city limits of Key West, Marathon or Islamorada.

The FEMA maps will be based on LIDAR mapping only recently completed in the Keys. And the draft versions are set to be released this summer.

“When the maps come out, I will be standing in line to look at it. I, and the rest of the Keys community, want to know how it will affect us,” said Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

The Keys local advocacy group Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) is also fundraising to support a Flood Map Task Force project.

“While FIRM supports updating the flood maps to better understand our risk, it is crucial that the risk is not overstated,” said Mel Montagne, president of FIRM. FIRM and the City of Key West are examining some of that raw data in-house to get an idea of what FEMA might be bringing to the table.

The new FEMA maps won’t just measure base flood elevation, but also “flow,” according to Montagne. Using historical data, for example, experts can evaluate how water flowed through Key West during Hurricane Wilma. Appeals to FEMA’s flood maps likely won’t challenge the base flood elevations, but rather the methodology used to calculate the elevation, or the flow, or some other scientifically verifiable data such as changes to the topography.

Montagne said he also understands there will be a new zone added to the flooding maps. Right now, all Keys homes are located in zone X (out of the flood plain), zone VE (right on the coast), or zone AE (inland). Montagne said he understands that AE Coastal will now be part of the new tier system and will fall on the risk scale between VE and AE. Montagne said he does not believe flood insurance premiums in the Keys will soar immediately.

“I think they will be gradual increases,” he said. “It’s not going to be overnight.”

Real estate agents are watching the process closely.

Neither high risk nor high policies help sell homes, a major component of the Keys’ economy.

“We support FIRM with frequent donations,” said Brian Schmitt of Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate Company. “I feel Realtors are the watchdogs on this. And Heather Carruthers is doing a great job leading with the county. Her deep knowledge and understanding and monitoring is instrumental. Our county is way ahead of other counties in coast flood zones.”

Windell Campbell is a performer for the Arts Council Of Hillsborough County and the Florida Humanities Council. In 2001, he was featured at the Exchange Place of the National Storytelling Festival. He incorporates the art of puppetry with the art of storytelling and the separate forms unite to become more than the sum of their parts.

Snake Creek project begins July 8

T

he Florida Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a bridge rehabilitation project the week of July 8.

The limits extend along Overseas Highway over the Snake Creek canal. The project will last nine months, FDOT says, and the cost is estimated at $1.5 million.

Work to be performed includes cleaning and painting bridge steel structures, and repairing electrical, mechanical and structural steel components.

Lane closures will occur during non-peak hours on non-event days, nights and weekends. Non-peak hours are 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.

Located at 101691 Overseas Highway, oceanside, Hobo’s is open for lunch and dinner. Patrons are met with exceptional hospitality from the hostess to the waiters and waitresses.

As for food options, the lunch and dinner menu is full of creative options. Take the quesadilla burger — a great lunch option for the hearty hunger. It’s a half-pound burger that’s grilled and served in flour tortilla shells.

Along with the ground beef, cooked to your liking, are black bean corn and salsa and melted cheese. Lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro salsa, banana peppers and sour cream are also served up with this delicious dish.

The lunch menu features a selection of salads, from something as simple as a house tossed salad to the Hobo’s Caribbean jerked chicken salad. It comes with greens, carrots, cabbage, pepperoncini, jerked chicken breast and homemade black bean corn salsa.

It’s served with pita points and topped with melted, fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers.

This dish also comes vegetarian style without the chicken.

As for sandwiches, Hobo’s has everything from a Philly cheesesteak and chicken Parmesan to a Sicilian chicken Panini and the Sloppy Hobo Burger. It’s a half-pound burger served over sautéed mushrooms and topped with lightly battered onion rings, potato strips, melted provolone and coleslaw with a side of barbecue sauce. There are also island fare dishes like Key lime shrimp, blackened mahi quesadilla and seafood baskets, to name a few items.

For dinner, Hobo’s offers a full range of local fish, beef and chicken dishes, sandwiches and salads. For appetizers, ceviche is a Hobo’s specialty. The dessert options will top off your experience at Hobo’s, and don’t forget about their selection of wine or draft beer to go with your meal.

member within the Rotary community for a while now, Lisa Feliciano lives by the organization’s motto: “service above self.”

Born in Illinois, Feliciano grew up in Miami with her family who came down in 1985. Living in south Florida for 30-plus years, Feliciano has worked in the banking business, beginning as a teller and working up the ladder to where she is today, assisting homeowners with mortgages at CenterState Bank in Key Largo.

“It’s great. We make people happy here in this office. It’s the best because you’re helping people out,” she said.

With banking very much a part of her life, so is giving back to the community. For many years, she’s been a member of several groups including

Key Largo Rotary, which meets every Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. Feliciano is a founder of the newly-chartered Rotary Club of Key Largo Sunset that has 37 members.

On why she started the new club, Feliciano joked, “I’m not a morning person! It’s not because of the people, it’s just the time.”

“When Jen McComb came back from Rotary International, one of the pushes was satellite clubs. I told her I was going to help start it, and that’s what we did,” Feliciano said. “It was so successful that we went from satellite to our own club way quicker than expected. It just went so quick.”

“My favorite thing is the motto of Rotary: service above self,” she continued. “It always touches my heart.

It’s so exciting to help the kids and seniors in this community.”

Do anything exciting recently at work or with Rotary? Yes I did! I did the best Rotary service project ever recently! Then I did an open house the following day with my Realtors.

What’s your dream vacation? I’ve probably done my dream vacation, but the Mediterranean. I did a cruise there and it was beautiful. My next dream vacation? I don’t know, but I’m looking forward to Hawaii for Rotary International convention next year.

What do you love about your job? I love that I can help and make people happy. I help them get into their homes.

What’s your idea of the perfect weekend? Relaxing and doing things for myself with my family. Family time is the best.

What do you love about being club president? The whole process of founding was a lot of excitement to see where we got to so quickly and to see the young people step up and want to be part of the club and take positions.

Farzana Khan, the concierge at the Islander Resort in Islamorada, thought up the idea of Full Moon yoga with instructor Lacey Devin, and added the Champagne Toast as her own touch on the event.

“S

o, the strawberry moon — what’s that all about? Is somebody gonna tell me,” asks Sandra Murphy of Islamorada. “I’m actually really excited about the champagne,” she laughs.

The June full moon is popularly called the Strawberry Moon because it signals the start of summer, when wild strawberries begin to ripen. Lacey Devin Aungst, a local yoga instructor, assures Murphy that she will read a passage during that night’s yoga practice to explain just what this special moon means spiritually. Aungst and Tracy Robinson, her fellow yoga instructor, lead the group of eager yogis to a quiet area of the beach on the Islander Resort property in Islamorada.

As participants lay out their yoga mats, Aungst begins. “Thank you all for being here. It’s really a beautiful thing.” The fidgeting quiets to Aungst’s instruction and voice, and the yogis close their eyes and begin their yoga practice. “Let’s start on our backs today. Get used to the sand; it’s not going anywhere,” says Aungst.

Throughout the class, the ocean waves lap against the shore and the palm trees rustle in the wind. The sun sets and the moon rises during the course of the hour-long class, leaving the yogis in the dark by the time they reach their final resting pose — savasana. “This was an amazing experience,” says Hanna Glaser, a visitor from Chicago. She’s come to the Keys with friends to relax and find herself more. While Glaser has done yoga before, it’s never been beach yoga,

and never moonlight yoga. “To feel the ocean wind and to hear the waves, and to lay back and see the stars, even with the clouds, this was just incredible.

Wow.” Nina, her friend, jokingly adds, “I couldn’t touch my toes this morning, and now I can! Maybe it’s the sand.”

Aungst reads, “Under the light of this moon, we have to remember the light from within. We have the bow and the arrow. Now, we just need to aim and trust the flow.” Murphy relaxes as she walks over to grab champagne after the class. “I felt like I really needed this right now in my life — the focus, the energy, the camaraderie. It’s beautiful, and that’s what yoga is all about.

The Full Moon Yoga and Champagne Toast have been going on at the Islander since the beginning of 2019.

Aungst and Farzana Khan, the concierge at the Islander, worked together to make the event a regular class. “We all love the idea of full moon yoga, and we thought all our friends would love it too, so we made a class, and it’s been great,” says Khan. “And the champagne – that was my addition,” says Khan as she holds up a bottle of bubbly. Aungst adds, “I get this vibration of love from everyone, and a sense of community support, not just for the event, but for each other. And to give that to yourself is so important – that love and support, that self-care.”

The next Full Moon Yoga class at the Islander will be held on Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m. Classes are posted on the Islander’s Facebook page, under events.

A six-man crew from Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority was overseeing some repairs to the main transmission line under Toms Harbor Bridge on June 27. Using their bare hands, the crew was smearing a brown waxy glue on the 30-inch pipe. Then they wrapped it with rolls of Trenton tape that are 9 inches wide and 18 feet long.

The procedure is an improvement, said FKAA’s supervisor Greg Gato.

“We used to paint the pipes,” he said, adding that one of the last times the aqueduct did that was for the pipe under the Spanish Harbor Bridge. Paint is more susceptible to corrosion in the saltwater environment. At the time, it cost $500,000. In time, they moved to the tape; and now, a different kind of glue. Gato said wrapping the pipe under Toms Harbor Bridge and Toms Harbor Cut would likely cost just half that amount — $250,000.

The difference between the pipe that has been rewrapped and the old stuff is noticeable. Older sections are pockmarked with repeated strikes from sinkers lobbed by fishermen on the adjacent fishing bridge. The damage invites corrosion.

“The new glue works better in extreme temperatures,” he said. FKAA hopes to get more than 12 years and, Gato said, the tape job could last 20 years.

The seat is currently held by Danny Kolhage, who does not intend to seek re-election. Henriquez will run against former Key West Mayor Craig Cates.

Henriquez has been married for 37 years to husband Ralph, head baseball coach at Key West High School. Their son, Ralph Jr., was drafted out of high school by the Houston Astros and now coaches for the Atlanta Braves; daughter Ashley is an attorney in Tampa.

festival is set during the 4th of July weekend to show appreciation to area veterans.

From noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, the inaugural Independence Day Weekend Salute to Our Veterans Festival will take place at Coconut Cove, MM 85, Oceanside, in Islamorada. Organized by The Long Walk Home and Leatherneck, and sponsored by several area businesses, the festival will feature many activities for veterans, their families and the public.

The Long Walk Home is a veterans charity and community outreach organization staffed by volunteers who are veterans, spouses and family of veterans or active duty military service members. The organization’s mission is to assist service men and women in their next mission, and protect and serve their family and community. Leatherneck Backcountry Fishing in Islamorada supports veterans and active duty service members with free trips.

“Basically, we want to provide outreach to vets and families to help,” said Ron Zaleski, community outreach for The Long Walk Home. “We’ve done a few little things with the similar theme. This is going to be a social, fun event to show appreciation, and it’s a way to meet fellow veterans and to see if there’s something we can do for them.”

With family-friendly games and auctions will also be food, a beer garden and an auction. Free food, shirts and hats will be given out to all veterans. In addition, therapists will also be available if anyone needs any help, Zaleski said.

“Or, if someone has trouble getting a job or a place to stay, we can get someone to help. This is a way to show we care,” he said.

“We know if they have a problem we can help.”

Zaleski is urging people to come out, enjoy the day and socialize with area vets. Zaleski embarked on a 3,400-mile journey across America barefoot in 2010 to raise awareness about PTSD. He gained the attention of many around the country and Veterans Affairs in Washington recognized him, D.C. Zaleski started his first barefoot walk in 2006-07 to create awareness for PTSD. “We need people to reach out to one another and say, ‘Hey, what can I do for you,’” he said.

“What I do now is try to inspire to say if I can walk across the country barefoot, then you can walk by and say hi and how are you doing.”

Not only are vets encouraged to come out on July 7, but they’re also welcome to join up with fellow veterans for activities such as running in the park.

“We’re not alone,” Zaleski said. “We think, ‘jeesh, no one else has this problem.’ There are a lot of people in the same boat.

When you see that you see you’re not alone and there are others out there.”
