hose wanting their voice heard on issues surrounding The Fills are encouraged to attend an upcoming special meeting at Founders Park Community Center.

Councilman Ken Davis called for the special meeting, which is set for Tuesday, June 18 at 5:30 p.m., to hear from residents before village officials meet with Sheriff Rick Ramsay and the Florida Department of Transportation on Friday, June 21 at the Roth Building.

Davis said the June 21 meeting is open to the public, but there will not be a public comment period.

“I wanted to make sure all residents have the opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas before we went into the meeting,” Davis told the Weekly. “It is such an issue in Islamorada right now, The Fills and the situation going on there, that I felt every resident should have the chance to speak.”

The Fills, which connects Upper and Lower Matcumbe Keys, sits along MM 77.5 to 79.8. Most of the area is owned by FDOT, with a portion of the northern end owned by the Florida De-

partment of Environmental Protection.

For many weekenders and daytrippers, it’s a place to launch boats, hang out and barbecue. But it’s also a place that becomes an eyesore with all sorts of trash left behind when they leave. Davis says he asked to see maintenance costs at The Fills, which is around $400,000 a year. The state provides around $54,000 for maintenance, leaving the rest of the costs to the village to cover.

Discussion was heard during the May 30 village council meeting, as resident Scott Vaughn called attention to Indian Key Fills and all the mayhem and mess. FDOT sent a representative, Elizabeth Jett, to gauge concerns following a request by Village Manager Seth Lawless the day after Memorial Day weekend. A lengthy discussion ensued over the issue and FDOT’s failure to resolve it.

While talks have taken place in the past, and plans presented, Davis said everything regarding the Fills has been stagnant since 2015. With a meeting set for public input, Davis sys he wants to hear ideas to break the stagnant water, and get back onboard with FDOT with a plan in place that people like.

“We’re not going to please everyone, but we need to do something,” Davis said.

Following Memorial Day weekend, Sheriff Rick Ramsay issued a letter to FDOT requesting them to meet in Islamorada to discuss traffic safety issues. Last year, Ramsay requested FDOT lower the speed limit to 45 mph given the number of crashes from speeding, passing and distracted driving. FDOT ended up reducing the speed limit to 50 mph.

On June 7, sheriff’s deputies were out at Indian Key Fill conducting speed enforcement as weekend traffic flowed in.

Those unable to attend the June 18 meeting are invited to submit comments and suggestions by email to the village clerk for dissemination to all village council members and the village manager. Send your email to clerk@ islamorada.fl.us by noon on Monday, June 17 to ensure council members receive it in time to review it before the special call meeting.

UNDERWATER EXPLORATION NASA mission in the Keys simulates space

J

ust 5.4 nautical miles offshore from Tavernier is a reef known as Conch Reef. Situated approximately 63 feet beneath the surface and surrounded by spur and groove coral formations is the world’s only undersea research laboratory, Florida International University’s Aquarius Reef Base.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) originally deployed Aquarius in Salt River Canyon off St. Croix, USVI in 1987. Thirteen missions were conducted in 1988-89 until Hurricane Hugo devastated the island on September 18, 1989. Aquarius was recovered in 1990 and underwent a three-year refurbishment in Wilmington, North Carolina. The undersea lab was redeployed on Conch Reef in 1993.

By providing extended access to one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, Aquarius serves as a unique platform to conduct cutting edge marine science research, facilitate innovative educational programming, and train specialized divers, such as astronauts. The habitat is a 43-by-10-foot diameter steel cylinder divided into three compartments: The wet porch, which provides direct access to the sea, and two pressure locks known

as the entry and main lock, which are 500- and 1,400-cubic-feet respectively.

Beginning June 13, Aquarius will serve as the home base for a fourwoman science crew and two male habitat technicians. This mission will simulate space exploration with a focus on objectives that prepare astronauts for missions to the International Space Station and, eventually, to the Moon and Mars. This mission, NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 23, is a continuation of NEEMO missions that have been conducted at Aquarius since 2001.

Since operations are not simulated, astronauts are immersed in a realistic analogue that often exceed what they experience through other forms of training.

Commanding the NEEMO 23 mission will be Samantha Cristoforetti, from the European Space Agency. She holds the record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight of a European astronaut. Cristoferretti was involved in Expeditions 42 and 43 where she spent 200 days living and working in the extreme environment of space.

The other female crewmembers include Jessica Watkins, a NASA astronaut candidate, Shirley Pomponi, a research professor at Florida Atlantic University who studies sponges and their potential in drug development, and Csilla Ari D’Agostino, assistant professor of neurosciences at the University of South Florida, who will study the psychological effects of living underwa-

ter for an extended period of time.

In addition to being tasked with space exploration objectives, aquanauts will engage in relevant marine science research. For the fourth consecutive year, NASA’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division has teamed with FIU’s Integrative Marine Genomics and Symbiosis (IMaGeS) Lab to better understand coral reef restoration efforts.

Using the extended bottom times afforded by Aquarius, aquanauts can get a lot of work done.

“Physiologically, there is no limit to how long people can spend in saturation while living underwater at Aquarius,” said Catherine Guinovart, Coordinator of Administrative Services for FIU’s Center for Coastal Oceans Research. “This mission will last nine days, but the longest we ever conducted lasted 31 days. The true gift of Aquarius is in the amount of bottom time the divers can have during these missions. Normally when people are diving from a boat at the surface, they can only be on the bottom for a short amount of time before they need to go back to the surface to avoid decompression sickness, but when people are saturated aboard Aquarius they can dive for up to nine hours a day in depths of up to 95 feet.

Riley Hatch, Ph.D. student in FIU’s IMaGeS lab and part of the surfacebased support team, says his team is interested in better understanding the effects that nearby fish communities, and their associated nutrient contribu-

tions, have on the composition, function and health of coral symbioses with microbial and algal assemblages.

“After the conclusion of the fouryear study, the corals will be outplanted on surrounding reefs, thus enriching the genetic variation and increasing coral presence in this critical ecosystem,” Hatch said.

To aid in the study, the Coral Restoration Foundation will provide coral trees and boulder coral fragments on the Aquarius Reef Base. Prior to the mission start, the CRF team will give the astronauts land-based training on how to assemble, install, and attach coral fragments to the structures.

Once the mission begins, astronauts will prepare the study site by attaching boulder coral fragments to PVC trees, erected in a sand plain near Aquarius.

“These unique coral tree nurseries will provide coral restoration practitioners with vital data to help save coral reefs around the world. We are thrilled to be part of this extraordinary mission,” said Amelia Moura, Coral Restoration Foundation science program manager. “The environment at the Aquarius Reef Base is completely different from where we traditionally grow our corals. This makes it an exciting opportunity to further understand how different coral species and different genetic strains within certain species react to different environments, different fish communities, and different light conditions.”

BRIEFLY History presentation examines Basilica St. Mary Star of the Sea The Matecumbe Historical Trust’s next free presentation will be on Monday, June 17 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Island Community Church, 83250 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. Guest speaker Bob Bernreuter will present “A History of the Basilica St. Mary Star of the Sea.” After the original St. Mary Star of the Sea on Duval Street was destroyed by fire in 1901, the new church on Windsor Street was completed within four years. The church’s construction embraced the island’s natural elements, using stone blocks made from limestone dug from the church grounds.

Bernreuter will offer stories and imagery on the only Catholic church in Key West and its grotto built by Sister Louis Gabriel, containing statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and Bernadette, which was dedicated on May 25, 1922.

Bernreuter graduated from Key West High, received a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and served in the Air Force as chief instructor pilot and command pilot, with three tours in Vietnam. He has taught religion at St. Mary Star of the Sea for 31 years and is regarded as the parish historian, currently working at Historic Tours of America as the corporate historian.

Astronomy for kids at Islamorada library What stories have been put in stars and why? What are those constellations? In a presentation on Monday, June 17, at 1 p.m., Elizabeth Moore and Jay Elliott of the Florida Keys Astronomy Club help children tell their own story with a constellation and then observe our closest star through a telescope. This gathering is free and geared toward children, though all ages are welcome. The event is part of Islamorada Library’s 2019 summer reading program, “A Universe of Stories.”

Household waste materials include bottles or cans of flammable liquid fuel and chlorine bottles, liquid poison, flammable solids, aerosol, corrosive materials, liquid or solid oxidizers, pesticides or herbicides, cyanides or sulfides, dry cell alkaline batteries, lead acid batteries, used non-contaminated oils, anti-freeze, latex paints, pcb liquids, bcb ballasts, non-regulated soaps, polishes and similar materials, contaminated oil solvents, oil-based paints and thinners, and tires off the rim that do not exceed a light duty SUV. Computer, electronic and lighting waste from your home is accepted at the drop-off days and throughout the year.

Contact Advanced Disposal to schedule a free residential roadside pickup of household electronics.

Pickups are made within five working days.

Residential used motor oil is also accepted throughout the year.

Up to five gallons may be dropped off at the Advanced Disposal local office, 86490 Overseas Highway, between 8 a.m. and noon.

The household hazardous waste days are provided for Islamorada's residential solid waste customers. Commercial customers must contact Advanced Disposal to arrange for proper disposal of hazardous materials.

rammar schools had been established in Upper Keys communities by the turn of the 20th century. It would take decades for a high school to arrive.

For years, Upper and Middle Keys students interested in graduating from high school needed to travel to Key West to complete their studies. It was not until PTA president Katharine “K” Wilkinson spearheaded efforts to bring a high school to the Upper Keys in 1948 that progress was seen.

The Monroe County School Board purchased 16 acres of land on Plantation Key from P.L. Wilson for $5,800. The property was used for the construction of a new school for Upper and Middle Keys students.

The resulting Coral Shores School opened in 1951 with six classrooms and six teachers for grades 1 through 11. Charles Albury, referred to as “Prof” Albury, was the first principal and Ferran Pinder, his assistant. In 1952, 12th grade was added and the school was formally dedicated. Students from Marathon were brought to Greyhound Key (today called Fiesta Key) and shuttled to school by bus. The first class to graduate from Coral Shores High School did so on June 10, 1953.

WALK INDIAN KEY App launched with info on island

I

n the early 1800s, Indian Key was home to a restaurant, saloon, the Tropical Hotel, a nine-pin bowling alley, and all the shops, wharves and warehouses needed to accommodate a thriving wrecking village. It is coming to life again, this time virtually, via a narrated walking tour with accompanying historic images. Walk Indian Key is available through a free app, Florida Stories, at FLStories.org, the Google Play Store or iStore.

Residents and visitors can now learn more about this storied 11acre island, an island that was briefly named a county seat of the newly formed Dade County. The narrated tour, with 12 stops on the island, delves into the rise and fall of the community, the 1840 attack by Indians during the Seminole War, and its most notorious resident, John Jacob Housman.

Walk Indian Key is a unique Upper Keys experience developed by Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation in partnership with and funding provided by the Florida Humanities Council and the Division of State, Department of Cultural Affairs, and with support from the Florida State Parks.

“Even if you think you know the island’s tremendous history, odds are that while listening to Walk Indian Key, you will hear a story or two you have never heard,” said Brad Bertelli, foundation curator, who selected the historic stops, wrote the narrative and compiled the photos.

The island is accessible via kayak or small watercraft.

The Walk Indian Key tour features 12 stops, starting at the Park Pavilion,

and including the town square, home ruins, Housman’s gravesite as well as the observation tower, post office ruins and a final stop with a view of Alligator Reef Lighthouse.

“If you can’t get out to the island, listen to the app then head to Keys History & Discovery Center on the property of the Islander Resort, where you will see a model of Indian Key circa 1840,” Bertelli said.

Florida Stories supports the creation of cultural, historical and architectural walking tours for communities across the state. The Florida Stories app allows users to learn about the history of some of Florida’s unique towns at their own pace and on their own schedule.

Florida Stories is designed to: • explore the history and heritage of Florida • increase knowledge about and appreciation of local communities • connect small communities on a statewide platform • create an immersive humanities program that is both fun and educational • create sustainable and walkable cultural tourism products • build collaboration between community partners This is the second walking tour created by the Foundation with FHC. Walk Historic Islamorada was launched one year ago and is one of the top downloaded walks of the more than 30 walking tour locations on the app.

Other walks include St. Augustine, Tampa’s Ybor City, Tallahassee, Downtown Miami and Key West.

otary International officially chartered the Rotary Club of Key Largo Sunset on June 5.

This club is the eighth in the Florida Keys, joining Key Largo (Sunrise), Upper Keys (Noon), Marathon (Noon), Big Pine & Lower Keys (Noon), Key West Sunrise, Key West (Noon), and Key West Sunset. With 471 active members countywide, 1 out of every 167 Monroe County residents is now part of Rotary International, a global network of 1.2 million business and professional leaders.

Lisa Feliciano, who joined Key Largo Rotary in 2001, is the club’s founding president. Marlen Weeks will become president on July 1, 2020, and club secretary Christina Martinez will become president on July 1, 2021. Ashley Arrabal is serving as treasurer and Monroe County Sheriff’s Sergeant Scott Ward chairs the club’s efforts for the Rotary Foundation.

CATCHING DOLPHIN S Team Contagious wins big prize money

kippers Dockside in Key Largo hosted its fifth annual dolphin tournament on June 1. Anglers from all over the state came down to participate in the tournament, which spanned two days. Skippers is primarily a mahi mahi tournament but awards were offered to largest wahoo, tuna, and kingfish as well. Anglers were allowed to weigh two fish each day of the tournament but it would be the combined weight of three fish that would determine the winners. One hundred fourteen teams competed, with Team Contagious taking the win and a prize of $43,000.

Aqueduct Authority holds contest

T

he Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority has recognized Monroe County students who participated in the American Water Works Association 2019 Drop Savers Poster Contest. The annual contest is open to students in Monroe County and promotes water conservation education and awareness.

School division winners were chosen from hundreds of entries by teams of FKAA staff judges, and from them, posters were judged based on message, creativity and originality, not just artistic ability. Division winners at the school, county and state level won individual and classroom monetary awards as well as a host of other prizes.

his just energizes us to do more,” said Ryan Elwell.

“My parents are tickled pink. It makes them feel good that the second generation continues on and uses profits for the good of the community,” said Chris Elwell. “It touches all of us in a different way.”

The two brothers are referring to a huge honor, recently bestowed, on the family company — Royal Furniture. Late last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio named it the Senate Small Business of the Week.

“The Elwell family, and the entire team at Royal Furniture and Design, are an incredible example of a hard working small business that is always looking out for their community. It is my honor to name them as the Senate Small Business of the Week. I wish them nothing but success in their future endeavors,” Rubio said in a statement.

Chris said the family has been informed Rubio will be visiting the Keys soon.

“He’s going to be giving us the award in person,” Chris said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

In addition to the company’s longevity (founded in 1984) and success comes a third focus — community giving. In 2016, the family was named as the Ameri-

can Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year. And, since Hurricane Irma, the family and business have ramped up efforts to support the storm-ravaged islands.

Ryan said the family business has worked with many agencies — such as Compass88, Samuel’s House and FarmShare — to coordinate donations for Keys residents. In addition, it partners with professional real estate organizations to support charities and raise money for scholarships.

“We tallied up the amounts and it’s over $50,000 so far,” Chris said.

It also hosts galas for a good cause. Earlier this year, the Mardi Gras Gala helped net $175,000 for the philanthropic Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation to support its rebuild in Marathon.

Royal Furniture has three showrooms in the Florida Keys, plus a warehouse and distribution center on the mainland.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Rubio continues the tradition of honoring America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. The committee oversees proposed legislation on matters relating to the Small Business Administration and investigates all problems relating to America’s small businesses.

he History of Diving Museum has several events planned for Father’s Day weekend.

On Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to about 11:30 a.m., Coral Restoration Foundation founder, and owner of Reef Renewal, Ken Nedimyer will read from “The Brilliant Deep.” The children’s book is about Nedimyer and his journey through the founding of CRF. There will be copies for sale, and to be signed, in the museum store.

Following the book signing Capt. Slate’s Dive Center will offer an afternoon dive/snorkel trip. The boat will be going to shallow reef sites that host some of the outplanted coral from CRF. Participants can take part in an underwater scavenger hunt, with prizes. On the dive boat, museum staff will share the local history of some of the shipwrecks within the Upper Keys, along with the development of the marine sanctuary that encompass-

es them.

On Sunday, June 16, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m, museum staff will conduct guided tours through the exhibits, sharing stories of the men who brought diving to life. Space is limited on the tours, so call to reserve your spot.

HARRIETTE’S HOMESTYLE Stop for some of the best muffins, breakfast bites

I

n Key Largo, there’s a place where many come from near and far to get a taste of some of the best muffins in the Keys. Some even come from various states just to take large bags of them back home.

Harriette’s Restaurant, at MM 95.7, bayside, is widely known for its 25 different kinds of muffins — notably the Key lime and Key lime coconut. But there are also some delicious breakfast dishes to try out inside the establishment, which continues to bring that family atmosphere and inviting feel with friendly, knowledgeable staff who’ve been there for many years.

The restaurant opened on May 17, 1982. Owner, chef and head baker Harriette Matteson brought some of the best muffins and tasty dishes to locals and visitors. She retired June 23, 2018 and handed the restaurant over to Carlos and Suni Hernandez, who continue to operate it the way Matteson did for so long. Carlos says they continue to provide the “grandma’s type of feel” restaurant with homemade cooking.

“I stepped in on that day. … It’s going on one year in a few weeks,” said Carlos, who used to have an Italian restaurant before retiring. He then hopped back into the business, taking over the restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. “This place, it’s been around for so long, and it’s always full and very active.”

Harriette’s is open daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

When stopping there, don’t leave without trying one of the many muffins on the menu, and don’t leave without trying or taking home the best Key lime muffin around. Once baked, they’re injected with some Key lime juice for a moist inside, served warm and topped with powdered sugar. Once you take a bite, you’ll know why Harriette’s is famous for its muffins.

Patrons can order one of several regular breakfast choices like steak and eggs; and two eggs any style with your choice of bacon, sausage, ham, hash browns or grits, with toast or a biscuit.

There’s also the old fashioned hot cakes with a choice of bacon, sausage or ham.

If you’re looking for a little extra on those pancakes, go and put some chocolate drizzle with some whipped cream on top. Or, ask for a cinnamon, brown sugar glaze to really take those hot cakes to the next level.

Breakfast-goers can also order Harriette’s giant three-egg omelets, which come with toast or a biscuit, or yummy favorites like Country Benny, made with a homemade biscuit, a sausage patty, medium fried egg and sausage gravy on top.

At Harriette’s, the dishes come out fast. The average time from order to dishes on the table is roughly 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Ms. Crispino, my 4th grade teacher, because she made learning fun and was really nice.

What is your favorite subject and why? I like math because it makes me think and it challenges me.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I like to read and play with my pets, a dog and a bunny. Right now I’m reading “The Land of Stories.”

n May 23, researcher Lawrence Wood presented a talk at Murray Nelson Center in Key Largo on the endangered and rare hawksbill turtle.

Wood has been working on this project for 25 years, thanks to funding from a variety of supporters.

In 2004, he established the Comprehensive Florida Hawksbill Research and Conservation Program, which has studied the hawksbill turtle in Florida.

Wood noted during his presentation that most South Florida residents aren’t familiar with hawksbills, which don’t usually lay eggs on beaches.

They also prey on sponges rather than seagrasses. By consuming only certain types of sponges, they help to increase biodiversity by allowing other less common species to also occupy space on the reef. One hawksbill can consume an estimated 1,000 pounds or more of sponges per year, according to the National Wildlife Federation.

Hawksbills have unique and interesting features, such as plastron on their underside; when this material becomes spongy, it signals that the turtles are ready to mate. Hawksbills also feature a shell comprising “scutes” made of fingernail-like material, and unlike the tiled appearance of other turtles’ shells, each scute on a hawksbill shell overlaps the one behind it.

As Wood said, even novices can spot a hawksbill by its “spiky butt.” The turtles check in at about 150 pounds, and thanks to an active black market, the value of their shell is quite high, often fetching over $1,000.

Hawksbills are listed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List, and the continued sale of these turtle products has hurt their recovery. According to tooraretowear.com, these souvenirs are found in stores and markets around Latin America and the Caribbean, and purchasers often don’t know they are buying endangered animals or that it is illegal to buy or transport them from country to country.

Once a hawksbill is captured and killed, the scutes are removed from the shell and then polished and carved to make the familiar ‘tortoiseshell’ jewelery. They can be heated and molded like plastic and made into brushes, combs and high-end items. Prior to plastic, this was a very popular material. Because of this demand, there is an estimated 90% depletion level worldwide. But according to Wood, progress is being made.

She even named local turtles, and noted that hawksbills are very tolerant of human interaction and complacent with the presence of divers. Her love of the sea was evident in an oftquoted line of hers: “If there’s not an ocean in heaven, I’m not going.” According to Wood, we

know more about hawksbills than we would have without her tireless studies.

Hawksbills are fitted with modified cattle ear tags to aid in noting their identification and whereabouts. Using electronic monitoring techniques, it was found that these turtles sleep about 25% of the time, have their own “beds” to which they return every night to roost. It was also discovered that South Florida is a developmental habitat, with a variety of turtles coming from other locations to mate and reproduce here. Aiding in knowing more about these elusive and rare creatures, scientists have identified chemical signatures, found in scutes, providing a long-term record of what turtles are consuming. Researchers also glue underwater cameras on the backs of turtles, providing front and rear views, in the hope that they interact with each other.

As Wood mentioned, it takes a community of concerned scientists, educators, funding agencies, dive boat operators and volunteers to promote and save endangered species like the hawksbill. Even used boat donations provide a source of funding to sustain sea turtle research.

Educating governments of countries that participate in hawksbill (and other endangered species) goods trading is also crucial to the survival of this ecologically-important and beautiful marine animal.

Aware and informed consumers also play an integral role in reducing the demand for endangered-species items. Think about this the next time you’re looking for marine life souvenirs; ask the vendor or shopkeeper where the item came from, and if it is on any endangered list. If you’re not satisfied with the answer, then don’t buy it. Be part of the solution to save the hawksbill, and let others know as well.

opious amounts of sunscreen are applied this time of year to protect against the sun. While lotions protect skin from sunburn and cancer, some aren’t protecting marine life and corals very well.

The chemical that filters ultraviolet rays, harmful rays that cause sunburn that provokes cancer cells to proliferate on the body, is oxybenzone.

It is used in 3,500 brands of sunscreen.

Fourteen respected researchers who engaged in a study to determine how oxybenzone chemicals affect corals reported their findings in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Technology. Their report indicated that one drop of the chemical in six-and-a-half Olympic-size swimming pools is sufficient to be toxic to corals.

Researchers went to the National Park Service (NPS), which oversees underwater parks in the U.S., including the Virgin Islands, to determine estimates of just how much sunscreen containing toxic chemicals enters reef areas each year. The answer, although vague, indicated that between 4,000 and 6,000 tons gets into reefs. NPS indicated that 90% of snorkelers who visit reef areas go to only 10% of reefs worldwide.

It only dawned on researchers that there might be a problem when local dive operators complained that after tourist boats left a reef, there was an oily slick on the water. Vast areas of coral bleaching and coral deaths virtually ignored were saved by dive operators who earn their living taking tourists to pristine reefs to enjoy marine life. Coral reefs worldwide have been deteriorating faster than nature can replenish them.

Shampoos and body wash products also contain harmful chemicals that eventually reach the seas and oceans when washed into sewer systems.

What happens when toxic chemicals reach corals? Coral is a marine animal. It begins life as free-swimming planula larvae. When the larvae settle, a colony will develop.

Microscopic marine algae play an important role using carbon dioxide and water given off in coral respiration and producing oxygen, sugar and lipids. Zooxanthellae, the green algae inside the coral’s theca or hard limestone base, requires clear, warm water where sunlight penetrates to survive.

Algae is a plant that needs sunlight for photosynthesis. Pollutants cloud water while temperature variants, too hot or too cold, are not conducive to healthy environments. Chemicals, even in minute amounts, disrupt the cycle of life that enables coral to live.

Oxybenzone and its allied chemicals have been found to cause young developing corals to encase in their limestone skeletons, thus killing or expelling algae. Coral dies as a result.

Oxybenzone and other chemicals contained in sunscreens set the stage for viruses to attack corals. This causes Zooxanthellae to die, resulting in a phenomenon known as coral bleaching. The corals become white, as if they were soaked in bleach, and die.

Researchers are also concerned that chemicals contained in sunscreens affect the DNA of corals that also affect internal hormone production.

“Divers, snorkelers and swimmers smear themselves with sunscreen, then go in the water. There is not even time to allow the product to be absorbed by the skin,” Goldberg said.

He echoed a concern many dive operators are beginning to voice about coral toxic sunscreens.

The harm of sunscreen chemicals on coral is just now being studied; changes caused by sunscreen chemicals in corals are barely understood.

What is clear is that vast areas of coral reefs in the Caribbean and Florida Keys are under attack with evidence everywhere of coral bleaching and dead coral heads. This is especially true in areas that receive the highest concentration of snorkelers who invariably coat themselves with sunscreens.

IN THE DOGHOUSE Artist spreading love, magic to community JIM McCARTHY

That’s the motto for Maxine Trainer, whose beautiful garden and art gallery sits in the corner of Village Square at The Trading Post.

There, Trainer can be spotted painting, tending to her garden and welcoming patrons who come from near and far to view her work.

Trainer, who came over from England 15 years ago and splits time between Titusville, Florida and Islamorada, is an internationally renowned artist, teacher and animal advocate, which can be seen with her beautiful rescue art at the studio.

Her gallery’s name? In the Doghouse Art Studio.

“I’m always in the doghouse,” she jokes. “It was perfect. Half the time we’re in the doghouse anyway.”

“For me, I hear great stories about what people do for animals,” as she discusses her art work to raise awareness for animals. “I realized it’s a celebration of what great people do, who are selfless and beyond themselves.”

Those familiar with Trainer know just how special she is. At her home in Titusville, she’s created “The Magic Garden” where she runs a program for children to develop their talents, skills and dreams. She also created the tiny house rescue art exhibit with help from friends and the community. She holds a variety of art classes throughout the week for kids and adults while happily greeting visitors to her gallery.

“It’s such an easy thing. It’s not hard,” Trainer says about her classes. “Just giving people a chance to express themselves, that’s a therapy. I do find a lot of people, when they come, they’re very nervous, especially when they come to class for the first time. Kids, well they just dive right in.”

She loves to talk about her classes, her experiences with children and the meaning behind her artwork. But what many don’t know is her current battle: breast cancer. Following a mastectomy, she returned with smiles and all to her studio — a place where many came to show their support for her.

“For me, I’ve had so many women show me their boobies,” she says. “They say, ‘Don’t be fearful, would you like to see?’ These women are fantastic. For me, because they’ve been through it, it stripped away the fear of what could happen.

They have been nothing but an inspiration.”

Full name? Nickname? Maxine Trainer. I also go by Max. What’s the first thing you did when you woke up this morning? I mixed a smoothie drink.

What will you be doing today at the studio? I’m going to be painting. I just finished the horse. I’ll be doing a 5-by-5 canvas of a Chihuahua. I picked the biggest canvass for the smallest dog. She thinks she’s Napoleon.

Where does your love for animals come from? From being very young. My mother tells me there was this stray. When I was young, I had two live rabbits in my stroller. If anyone tried to take them away I’d scream. I went to my mom recently and said, “You do realize that would go down as abuse?” My mother was always fantastic. We always brought injured birds and strays home.

What do you love most about what you do? I love being able to express myself. I love being able to raise awarness. I love helping other people to get to their place.

What do you enjoy about Village Square at The Trading Post? I love being surrounded by this beautiful garden. I love meeting all the amazing people that come through. All the people here are fabulous.

Did you have a role model growing up? My brother, who was an artist too, actually. He encouraged my craft.

Your go-to drink after a long day?

Red wine. Spritzer. Oh yeah. At the end of the day, I clamp down and chill.

What’s something most people don’t know about you? That I’m incredibly sensitive.

How long have you been doing the stained art glass classes? What about them do you enjoy? I love the stained glass classes. It’s a different way of working from painting. I’ve been doing classes for 10 years. My very first art piece was so bad, I showed it in my garden to show people what not to do.

When I take students to it, I say this is what you don’t do.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would it be? It’s OK to care.

new academy opening in the Upper Keys is providing the full gamut of services for kids, teens and young adults with special needs.

With schools in Kendall and Little Havana, Carpe Diem Academy is opening a new facility in Key Largo at MM 95, bayside. The academy, which has served the special needs community since 2005, serves those ages 3-22.

Previously, special needs children in the Keys who attended Carpe Diem Academy were bused daily to Kendall for schooling. Now, they will be able to get the services, attention and therapy they need locally. Along with the school, Carpe Diem Academy in Key Largo has a therapy office next door.

Amanda Quevedo, finance and human resources director, said occupational, physical, speech and behavioral therapy services are provided. With its three locations in Florida, Carpe Diem Academy has a staff of 55 who are educational instructors, nurses, mental health counselors and therapists among other licensed professionals.

“There’s nothing that we cannot do,” she said.

Quevedo also said students can receive credit through the virtual school while receiving the oneon-one attention they need.

The academy is creating an opportunity for special needs students to have initial classroom experience in conjunction with an intensive therapeutic and technological environment.

The Florida Sea Base is looking for an experienced Bookkeeper to handle our day-to-day accounting and finance requirements. Confidentiality, excellent organizational skills, strong excel skills and accuracy are important qualifications for this position, as well as good customer relations. Responsibilities include balancing and maintaining accurate ledgers for the $15 million operating budget, writing checks, submitting check requests and tracking payments, matching purchase orders with invoices, coordinating bank deposits, tallying and entering cash receipts, paying vendor invoices and reviewing monthly financial statements and providing any needed corrections. Compensation package includes competitive salary ($37,000 - $42,000 depending on skills), health, dental and vision insurance, paid vacation days and retirement plan.
