or the first time, the Marathon City Council weighed in with a condition for proposed affordable housing units in the city limits. As a condition of the conditional use agreement, the council instructed the developer what to charge every month.

“I move to approve with the condition that four of the units be at 140% of the annual median income, and the other 10 units at 120% or lower,” said Councilman Mark Senmartin.\The proposed project joins two others on the “curve” of Aviation Boulevard on the west end of the airport near U.S.1. The GEM homes project is for nine affordable and six market rate homes and there are also plans to redevelop the Coconut Cay. Projects in this area have routinely faced scrutiny due to traffic concerns, now waylaid by the state Department of Transportation’s agreement to begin modifying the intersection beginning in August.

The newest project, the one approved on June 11 by the council, calls for four quadruplexes in three standalone configurations, plus two units above office space for Coral Construction. The site includes amenities such

as a pool, parking and outdoor storage for the local firm on a parcel zoned mixed use.

In the past, the council has inquired about proposed rental rates, or suggested them, but never required it before approving a project. Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey told the council that the hearing for the conditional use was its only opportunity to address rents.

“Current rules say this could be the only time to discuss rents, and I understand it’s difficult to know what (category of) affordable is needed most,” Lindsey said, “but this is the last time you hear the project.”

The number of affordable housing building rights available to the City of Marathon is dwindling as 2023 nears, when the state will no longer issue building rights for new developments in the Keys. And, many of the building rights for the “extra” 300 awarded by then-Gov. Rick Scott after Hurricane Irma, currently being challenged in Tallahassee, are also spoken for. It’s natural then, that the city’s leadership is considering what type or mix of affordable housing is needed; i.e., how many need affordable housing and what they are willing/able to pay.

Many residents of Marathon have noted that $2,200 a month for units designated as affordable is not affordable. To put that in perspective using

the recently approved project above, income limits for a Marathon household of four earning $114,750 can — according to HUD income limits — pay a monthly rent of $2,869 and the unit would still qualify for an affordable designation in the 120% category.

On the other side of the coin, developers need incentives to build affordable housing in the first place.

The project needs to be profitable. The costs associated with building affordable housing vary wildly depending on size, design, finishings and location.

“I see the value in having a project that serves mixed income levels,” said Councilman Luis Gonzalez, who supported Senmartin’s solution. “But that’s at the discretion of the developer. If it’s not profitable, the developer won’t do it.”

Coral Construction’s George Steinmetz said he is grateful to the council for approving the project. “It should be doable from a financial standpoint,” he said.

Steinmetz will apply to the City of Marathon for the affordable housing building rights from the 300, but it was not a part of the conditional use agreement considered on June 11.

In other news: • The council approved the plans for a new location for Captain Pips watersports at 1470 Overseas Highway.

The project calls for commercial space, waterfront access and six market rate units, plus one affordable unit.

• The council re-approved the vacation rental registration fees without a rate hike.

• Councilman Dan Zieg proposed reverting to a code board, instead of a special magistrate, to hear code violations. Council asked staff to bring back data for comparison.

• The council approved a 60-day extension for Holiday Inn Express to finish applying for permits and begin construction on 27 additional rooms.

The hotel recently changed ownership.

• The council approved changes to the city’s code regarding civil penalties for the possession of marijuana for amounts under 20 grams. Law enforcement officers have the discretion to issue a ticket, or make an arrest.

Tickets can range in cost from $105 to $500 and the new code outlines procedures for paying the civil fine at city hall, or contesting it by requesting a court hearing.

erry Dieguez is gonna need a bigger boat. With six kids, one grandchild, and plenty of room left to grow, Dieguez is definitely one of the most special fathers in Marathon.

“I’ve lived in Marathon my whole life — 51 years,” Jerry boasts. “I’ve been here since there was one light which was Sombrero, the town had three cops, and the mosquitoes were so bad they could pick you up and carry you away.”

His wife, Jennifer, said Jerry took to fatherhood like a fish to water. “His whole life is his kids,” she said. Jerry adopted the oldest when she was just 3 years old and then set his mind to filling the house with more kids. “He waited until he was 38 to become

a biological dad, but then there was no stopping him.”

Yep, that’s six kids. And now, one grandchild, too.

He supports them all with his commercial painting business, Superior Exterior. But we get the idea that the work ethic is instilled in his kids. Danielle has started her own business, and Jared, 19, is something of a freelance captain-slash-mate for hire. Taylor has a job at the local pizza parlor. The rest are up-andcomers.

Six, (seven if you count the grandbaby) … well, it’s a big number. But Jerry Dieguez is undoubtedly a big man in all the ways that count, most importantly the eyes of his family.

TODD ZIELS “He’s set a good example, he’s always provided for us, and he always gets us laughing,” said Lisa Ziels about her flats fisherman husband, Todd Ziels.

He made it to every meet, game, and competition he could when his son Dylan played baseball and when his daughter Hannah competed in swim team, weightlifting, and track. (Hannah just graduated from Marathon High School!)

DEREK SCHUT When it comes to Derek Schut, his spouse Elizabeth Schut said, “He can fix everything,” and their 12-year-old son, Cash, immediately replied with, “Everything I break.” Derek, president and co-founder of All Keys Glass, is a workaholic, even at home. Elizabeth said, “If there’s still dishes and laundry to do, he’ll do it even after working a 10- or 15-hour day.” Derek and Elizabeth have been dating on and off since they were both 9 years old and they officially tied the knot five years ago while in their thirties.

BILL MARTIN “He’s always there for me, my good days and bad days. He supports the family and he works hard ... and we’ve practiced ping pong a lot and now I’m the best at school except for one teacher, Mr. Freeman,” said Billy Martin, 13, about his dad, Bill. Gina Martin, Bill’s wife, said, “Billy and I have been in taekwondo for about six years so we both have 2nd degree black belts but Bill always teases and says he has the green belt because he was paying for our lessons. He’s got a great sense of humor.”

MIKE BLACK For 13 years, Mike Black has been a lineman at the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative, but for the last four years he’s earned the title of dad thanks to his daughters Olivia and Adeline. His wife Krystina Black said, “From my point of view, the best thing he has done as a father and spouse is working harder than he already does so that I can stay home with our girls and raise them. From the girls’ point of view the best thing he has done for them is just being there for them when they want snuggles or want to build blocks with him. He leaves to work on storm work often and they miss him a lot. Any time he is home they just love his time and attention.”

THANK YOU, DAD HECTOR ROBLES The seven Robles children are Tasheem, 21, Synthia, 15, T.J., 12, Daivyon, 12, Daeshawn, 11, Santana, 5, and Isaiah, 3. “With him, I never have to worry about anything,” said Shanel about her husband Hector. “With my hectic career at Fisherman’s Hospital and his busy schedule at FedEx, he still manages to pick up the babies and the other kids from day care or school. He comes home and he’ll clean, he’ll cook, and he’ll do laundry. ... It’s a relief that I have that partnership and him being like that as a father where I don’t have to stress out much. I’m so grateful because a lot of people don’t have that in their lives.”

PATRICK STEVENS “He’s super supportive with anything and everything that we want to do,” says Key Dance Academy’s Jamie Stevens about her husband Patrick of Wolfe Stevens PLLC. Weather permitting, the Stevenses are going out on their boat for Father’s Day. While their boat doesn’t have an official name, Patrick calls it “The Office” where his children Fisher and Abbigail are first and second mate.

TROY QUALLS According to 2-year-old Dominic, the best things about his dad Troy Qualls are his hugs, “Mommy!” (also known as Yessenia Crespo), and the rides on the “Vroom Vroom” (also known as a four wheeler). Dominic comes from a long line of Marathon residents, including landscaper Troy’s nine sisters and brothers.

CHIP CLARKE Chip Clarke serves at the local Coast Guard base and is nearing one year of living in the Keys with his family. His daughter Payton, a lover of Elsa and unicorns, likes going to visit him at work. An enthusiastic “go swimming!” is one of Payton’s favorite activities with dad.

BRANDON SAUDERS “He takes every opportunity to turn life into a lesson,” says Tiffany Sauders of her husband Brandon. They have two sons, Ethan and Micah, who both have been on baseball and soccer teams coached by their dedicated dad.

Brandon works at D’Asign Source as a field technician. His main role right now is overseeing pool installations. “He works hard but always makes time for them,” Tiffany says. “He has a heart for serving others and leads them by example.”

CHRIS WILLIS Skylor Willis loves Dada “because he plays tag at Rotary Park, takes me fishing, and does everything with me!” Chris is a counsellor at Switlik and brings Skylor to family events at school and to check out the big construction machines there.

DAVID DIPRE “My dad is an amazing person and the best dad I could ask for,” says Sophie Dipre, daughter of FWC Capt. David Dipre. She describes her father as “friendly, kind, hardworking, and understanding.”

THANK YOU, DAD ALLEN PINKLEY Since 2006, when his sons Ben and Matthew showed an interest in the Boy Scouts, Allen Pinkley has been actively involved in Scout Troop 573 and has gone out of his way to help his sons take advantage of all the adventures the troop provided. His wife, Amanda, describes how Allen has always encouraged their boys to take chances, make mistakes, and jump at opportunities to learn and grow. “Being in the Keys, distance has been an issue for some of these opportunities, but he never let that be a reason to not take advantage of something if one of our boys was interested.”

BOBBY GROSTEFON Bobby Grostefon is always ready to get active with his 4-year-old son Judah.

“He always says yes to playing games, always has time to take Judah on adventures, and never misses an opportunity to take Judah with him on the boat, four-wheeling or even skipping school to go to work with him,” says his wife, Candace. On top of taking his son on exciting escapades, Bobby has also taught his son how to shimmy up a tree, ride his bike, and — Candace’s favorite — bring mommy breakfast in bed. “He’s a great dad,” says Candace, “who takes pride in raising a strong, confident and well-mannered son.”

RYAN SCHRAFFENBERGER Georgia, 2, has dad Ryan wrapped around her little finger. (Probably mom Julie, too!) The Weekly asked Ryan for two statements on fatherhood — one profound and one touching. “I think this sums it up,” he said, laughing, “I am excited for her to go to sleep and I am excited for her to wake up!” Nailed it.

KENT LOFTUS 3-year-old Owen Loftus has nothing but praise for his father, Kent, “My dad is the best dad because he takes me fishing, goes golfing with me, and he can swim under the water.” Very impressive. “I love him because he lets me feed the fish, he makes the best dinner, builds things, and he always gives us hugs.”

ERIC MYRMEL Malanna Myrmel has a hero in her grandfather, Eric Myrmel. The two spend oodles of time together. His wife, Lorie Mullins, said Eric is both loving and funny!

JESSE GALLO Lorie Mullins said the same thing of her son, Jesse Gallo. The Marathon High School graduate is currently stationed in Japan, spending time with Musashi, 1-year-old.

KEN TRIOSi Look away for a second, and the kids are almost all grown up. This is the reality of Ken Triosi, park manager of Curry Hammock State Park on Grassy Key. He has three children — Mia, 17, Max, 14 and Kai, 7. “Ken is a great dad because he is kind, loving, honorable, funny, handy, protective, open-minded, believes in his children, and concerned with providing a better future for his kids,” said his wife, Amy.

JOHN WOLFE This local attorney has four kids — Layne, Brad, Alex and Will, ranging in age from 24 years old to 22 years old. Brad said his dad is a fun-loving, hardworking, family-oriented dad. He said his dad has taught his kids to be goal oriented without sacrificing enjoyment. “He has taken all of his children traveling around the world and has instilled a great sense of adventure in all of us,” Brad said. “We’d love to see him for Father’s Day but he’s currently on a cycling trip in Croatia with our mom!”

he Florida Keys are connected by so much more than the Overseas Highway and a new walking tour app, produced in connection with the Florida Humanities Council and the Keys History & Discovery Center, reveals the conduit of history.

Walk Indian Key, the newest addition to the Florida Stories program, offers a surprising glimpse into one of the hidden gems of the island chain.

The 11-acre island just offshore of the Matecumbe keys was a thriving wrecking community in the 1830s before it was destroyed in an Indian attack during the second escalation of the Seminole War. Twelve stops are included in the tour, which has been professionally recorded, accompanied by background music, and augmented with imagery. What Walk Indian Key demonstrates, beyond some really cool history, is the integral role Key Vaca and Key West played in the development of the island.

While the island is only accessible by kayak or boat (though the boat dock is still inaccessible due to damage suffered during Hurricane Irma), the free, downloadable app can either enhance a physical visit to the island or provide a virtual one. SCHOLARS ARE ON THEIR WAY Community supports students’ next chapter

It’s an incredibly generous night. In all, the community of Marathon collects and donates more than $1.3 million to the Class of 2019. And the gifts come from a vast variety of sources such as Take Stock in Children ($384,000!) and state Bright Futures merit scholarships. But there is an overwhelming amount raised locally by clubs and organizations selling hot dogs or raffle tickets.

The Marathon chapter of the Business and Professional Women Club awarded $20,000 in scholarships to 17 bright, talented and deserving Marathon High School graduating seniors. The Club renamed its high school scholarship the "Stacie Kidwell Memorial BPW/ Marathon Scholarship" in memory of a dearly departed member who championed the scholarship effort for many years. Stacie passed away in 2018. The Marathon Chamber Board of Directors presented seven $1,000 scholarships in 2019. Although it typically awards only five scholarships every year, the chamber increased the number due to the gracious donation of Ron Snyder, the former owner of Herbies, who won a $2,000 raffle prize in late 2018 and donated it back in honor of his mother, Gay Neth Snyder. Since 2007, the Marathon Chamber Board of Directors has donated over $90,000 to Marathon High School seniors and Take Stock in Children. The 2019 recipients are: Aaron Tipsword, Ryan Koutros, Rachel Lebo, Luke Hoffman, Abigail Frank, Hannah Ziels and Oriana Mendez.

Luke Hoffman was the recipient of a four-year, renewable scholarship presented by the Marathon Garden Club’s Nancy and Carl Miller. Hoffman will be attending Florida State University in the fall. The total award over four years is $6,500 for a full-time student with a good grade point average, and an interest in science or a related field.

The Middle Keys Marine Association Inc. awarded $1,000 scholarships to Marathon High School’s Alejandro Parrado, Rachel Ruiz and Sophia Sokolosky. The Coral Shores High School scholarship went to Kyle Kraus.

The Marathon Women of the Moose, in coordination with the Hobe Burch Memorial selection committee, identified four Marathon high school students as worthy recipients. A total of $3,500 was awarded to Angelberto Alvear and Kyshaun Appolon (Hobe Burch Memorial scholarship) and

Rachael Ruiz and Alejandro Parrado (Women of the Moose).

On Class Night, the Marathon Alumni Athletic Club recognized eight students with a $250 scholarship. They are Kyshaun Appolon, Oriana Mendez, Aydan Child, Luke Hoffman, Deyli Labrada, Grace Kirwan, Jackson McDonald and Hannah Ziels.

Fifteen students received a $1,000 scholarship from the Marathon Rotary Club. They are Ryan Koutros, Amber Romance, Nicole Joniaux, Oriana Mendez, Annabelle Marcy, Angelberto Alvear, Hannah Ziels, Alejandro Parrado, Aydan Child, Sophia Sokolosky, Grace Kirwan, Abigail Franck, Luke Hoffman, Aaron Tipsword and Kalelia Lettman.

Luke Hoffman received the $500 scholarship awarded by the Florida Keys Contractors Association.

The FKCA is a professional trade association composed of contractors, builders, suppliers and related professionals to the industry.

Edson Montes and Thalia Portal each received a two-year scholarship from the College of the Florida Keys (formerly Florida Keys Community College) Board of Trustees. The students will be studying locally at the institution that now offers four-year degrees.

FIRST IN FLIGHT Just-added transfusion gets early use

M

onroe County Fire Rescue advanced its pre-hospital trauma patient care by adding inflight blood transfusions for critically injured patients on May 9. Just 17 days later, the first inflight blood transfusion was needed after a Memorial Day weekend boating accident.

With a critical injury after being hit by an outboard motor propeller on the water, Osmany Zamora of Miami Gardens was rushed to the Sunshine Key Marina, where Monroe County Fire Rescue was waiting. He was transported to Trauma Star and airlifted to Jackson South with flight nurse Jorge Bolivar and flight medic Tony Perez.

En route, Zamora had a significant loss of blood and his blood pressure dropped to dangerous levels. Because of the blood transfusion, Zamora was stabilized upon arriving to the mainland hospital.

Until recently, restoring blood loss inflight was limited to saline solutions, which will not restore the oxygen carrying capacity of blood in the body.

“We are very grateful for Fire Rescue and Trauma Star,” said Zamora’s wife Ivon, who was even more thankful after finding out the inflight blood was placed into service two weeks prior. “It saved his life.”

Zamora, while still in a lot of pain, was released from the hospital this week. He is also excited to swing by the Trauma Star hangar next time he is town with Cuban coffee for the crew.

“It's very rewarding to hear when patients have positive outcomes due to the care you deliver,” said Bolivar. “It is what ignites my passion to do what I love every day.”

In rural areas, the role of blood transfusion is even more critical because of the distance to mainland trauma centers. The flight time from Lower Keys Medical Center to the three closest trauma centers, Kendall Regional Trauma Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital South, and Jackson Ryder Trauma Center, is 50 to 55 minutes.

“It is very possible that we would be telling a different story about this accident if blood wasn’t available on the inflight transfers,” said chief Trauma Star flight nurse Lynda Rusinowski.

“The addition of blood on the helicopter gives the flight crew a tremendous tool for stabilizing a patient before reaching a specialty hospital.”

County launches new search program One stop to search for permits, licenses, code compliance

he Monroe County Building Department introduced MCeSearch, a new program that allows the public to review status and information on permits, search local licensed contractors, see code compliance cases, and review property information for unincorporated Monroe County. The website is a single point access search tool for permits, licenses, and code compliance cases and will replace the eGovPLUS website.

“The new system is a more stable application and provides a better user experience,” said Ed Koconis, Monroe County building administrative director.

Permit and code compliance searches can be done by owner’s name, address of property, permit or case numbers, real estate numbers, or inspector. Contractors can be found in a general “all” search, or by company name, category, license numbers, or contractor ID. To transition, eGovPLUS will still be available until June 30. Next Marathon Council election in November

T

here are five months of campaigning to fit in before the Marathon city election on Nov. 5, 2019. Marathon city elections no longer coincide with county elections and the terms are staggered, to prevent five new councilmen being elected in the same year. In 2019, there are three seats up for grabs.

Mayor John Bartus and Marathon Councilman Dan Zieg are nearing the end of their respective terms. Both incumbents have filed with the Supervisor of Elections for another shot at a three-year term.* John Kissick is running again after an unsuccessful campaign in 2018, and Eugene Gilson is brand-new to the political arena.

Councilman Steve Cook said he would not seek a second term.

“There has to be a very compelling reason, one that overrides my desire to spend time with my wife, children and grandchildren,” Cook said. “Plus, I came into this in 2016 with the idea that we needed fresh faces and fresh ideas. How will that play if I stay on?”

Bartus has very specific reasons for continued service: “FEMA reimbursement from Hurricane Irma and infrastructure needs, continued recovery of our businesses and residents, and securing the 300 affordable housing units from the state.”

Bartus was the major vote-getter of four candidates in a three-way race in 2016, with 27% of the vote. He served on the original council after Marathon was incorporated. He then served as a fill-in for council members who resigned before the end of their terms (Ginger Snead, Chris Bull), before he returned to the council in 2016 after an election with his name on the ballot.

He said he wants to serve the

constituents. “The people who live and work here, that’s the constituency. The ones who need affordable housing and work two to three jobs to stay here.”

Gilson, the political newcomer, understands those issues very well. A resident since 2012, he is the manager of the Marathon Bealls Outlet store, as well as interim manager of the Key West store while a new manager is sought. Employee recruitment, he said, is constant.

“It’s an awesome store; in fact, the Marathon outlet ranks in the top five in the company in terms of producing,” Gilson said, “but recruiting and training new employees is constant because of the cost of living down here.”

Gilson said he’s running for the simple reason that he wants to help. “The council has been doing really good, and I feel I can relate with the heart of the community because I work with a lot of them. I just want to help, that’s my main goal.” He said affordable housing, creating a family-oriented community and beautification of U.S.1 will be his top three concerns.

A native of Queens, New York, Gilson has always worked in retail. He lived in the Titusville and Cocoa area of Florida for decades before transferring to the Keys. He and his wife have adopted three grandchildren — ages 7, 3 and 2 — and are raising them in Marathon.

Zieg is an incumbent seeking another term. In the 2016 race, he narrowly defeated Bill Kelly, by five votes. (Zieg was first elected in 2014 in a three-way race that saw Chris Bull and Bill Kelly also voted into office.) Zieg is a retired orthopedic doctor and formerly served on the city planning commission, as well as a former reserve officer for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

“I think the council has worked together quite well in the past few years; we’ve made progress in several areas,” Zieg said. “I would like to have the opportunity to work on some of the half-completed items we have already begun.”

Zieg is working behind the scenes to come up with a plan for the 33rd Street area of Marathon, which is a mish-mash of county- and city-owned properties lacking contiguous ownership and, therefore, development possibilities for a municipal project. He also wants the council to consider reverting back to the code board instead of a special magistrate to hear civil cases regarding property code violations.

Kissick ran in 2018. His 971 votes were not enough to beat Luis Gonzalez or Mark Senmartin for the two open seats.

A Detroit native, Kissick graduated from Northwood University in 1988 with a business management degree and is the 11-year owner of Fazoli Brothers Inc., a swimming pool building business. He’s lived in Marathon for 14 years.

“It seems like the right time to help the city get some new blood into the city council and help push projects along. I’d like to push my agenda for a community pool,” Kissick said.

His vision is actually more of a community aquatic center with a splash park, lazy river, maybe even a surfing machine.

“It would be some place to take the kids when it’s too windy to get out on the water. Instead of leaving Marathon and going to Key West or somewhere else, folks can stay here and spend money in the city. I want it to be a place where people can spend the day,” he said, adding that other area attractions are more geared toward a visit lasting an hour or two.

“I think people should pay to swim in the lap pool, though. But we can bring down collegiate competitions to spend money, too.”

According to the Supervisor of Elections’ most recent report, only Gilson has self-reported financial contributions of $300 from three backers.

Bartus said he will not be raising any campaign funds and said he would instead urge backers to write a check to a local charity. * In 2015, a referendum was approved to make changes to the City of Marathon’s charter, changing term limits from three two-year terms to two three-year terms.

Sitting politicians were “grandfathered” and allowed to run for another term to guarantee a minimum of six years service.

In the City of Marathon election, candidate’s petitions are due by July 9 (submitted in lieu of a fee to run). The petitions are verified Aug. 6-13. Early voting is from Oct. 21 to Nov. 5. The election is on Nov. 5, 2019.

Coast Guard throws a party

Expect traffic delays late on Thursday, June 13 into the early morning of Friday, June 14 on the Seven Mile Bridge between 11:30 p.m. and 2 a.m.

A contractor will be performing bridge repairs. There will be two closures — one 30-minute closure and another lasting between 15 to 30 minutes.

Traffic will be stopped at both ends of the bridge. No traffic will be allowed on the bridge. In the case of emergencies, operations will pause to allow emergency response vehicles to pass.

Message boards are being displayed to show planned closure dates and times.

Please note that these schedules may change due to bad weather or unexpected conditions and the public needs to plan accordingly and exercise patience.

The U.S. Coast Guard Marathon Station is having a party on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free burgers and hot dogs will be available alongside tours of the compound, as well as safety demonstrations and flare demonstrations. can still remember my first time at Burdines Bar and Grill.

While our friends were tying the boat to the seawall, I mentioned it was my first time visiting. My friends said, excitedly: “You absolutely have to try their fries! They are sprinkled with a secret dust and it’s highly addictive!”

There’s a good story behind this friendly, hidden gem on the waterfront in Marathon. It starts with the Burdine family, who owned a donut manufacturing business in Texas almost 70 years ago. In 1997, Gene Burdine purchased the marina at the end of 15th Street, oceanside, in Marathon.

Randy, the general manager, had been working in the marina, when two years later, the idea of opening a hamburger place came about. The Burdine family asked him to jump on board the new venture because of his background in food and beverage. A couple of weeks later, Brenda, the office manager, was asked to jump offboard, literally, while sailing past the dock in her 28-foot boat. She was asked whether she knew how to flip burgers. The mother of two sons knew.

And has been there ever since.

“We had a small cooking unit, about three feet wide, with a small six-inch fryer,” recalled Randy.

The humble beginnings belie the incredibly successful business that now employs about 30 people. The marina, gas dock, restaurant, and the little bait-tackle-sundries shop function like a supportive family. The turnover is minimal, due in part to good benefits.

“Since the cost of living here is horrendous, even the tip pool is divided between everybody at the end of the day,” explained Randy.

While Randy characterized Burdines’ menu as “eclectic Keys cuisine,” it has been thoroughly tested. At one point, every entrée has debuted on the specials menu, giving customers the chance to vote nay or yea.

The original menu consisted of just three choices — hamburger, cheeseburger and green Chile cheeseburger. Oh, and the fries, of course.

The fish sandwich came next. “We tasted it, then tested and kept experimenting until we got it just right,” said Brenda.

Beans and rice are a staple at Burdines and made from scratch, as is the salsa. Tuna poke includes freshly cut pineapple and avocados, sesame seeds, scallions, red pepper and onions. It’s very good. But save room for the award-winning fried Key lime pie (mentioned in Paula Deen’s magazine). The pie is wrapped in tortillas dribbled with a sour creamy lime sauce before being deep fried, and includes hints of crushed walnuts and sprinkled cinnamon sugar. Again, the fried Key lime pie is the product of teamwork: Brenda, Randy and their chef.

The same menu is served all day long, accompanied by hand-squeezed lemonade and a good selection of craft beers.

There’s plenty to look at, too. In addition to the waterside seats of traffic coming and going from Boot Key Harbor, there’s the colorful wooden boxes (for condiments) on each table. The walls are adorned with old license plates. And the check is secured with an old-fashioned rat trap to keep from blowing away.

And, yet, the question remains: What is that sprinkle of magic on the fries?

“If we tell you, it wouldn’t be a secret any more, would it?” said Brenda and Randy in unison.

his just energizes us to do more,” said Ryan Elwell.

“My parents are tickled pink. It makes them feel good that the second generation continues on and uses profits for the good of the community,” said Chris Elwell. “It touches all of us in a different way.”

The two brothers are referring to a huge honor, recently bestowed, on the family company — Royal Furniture. Late last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio named it the Senate Small Business of the Week.

“The Elwell family, and the entire team at Royal Furniture and Design, are an incredible example of a hard working small business that is always looking out for their community. It is my honor to name them as the Senate Small Business of the Week. I wish them nothing but success in their future endeavors,” Rubio said in a statement.

Chris said the family has been informed Rubio will be visiting the Keys soon.

“He’s going to be giving us the award in person,” Chris said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

In addition to the company’s longevity (founded in 1984) and success comes a third focus — community giving. In 2016, the family was named as the Ameri-

can Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year. And, since Hurricane Irma, the family and business have ramped up efforts to support the storm-ravaged islands.

Ryan said the family business has worked with many agencies — such as Compass88, Samuel’s House and FarmShare — to coordinate donations for Keys residents. In addition, it partners with professional real estate organizations to support charities and raise money for scholarships.

“We tallied up the amounts and it’s over $50,000 so far,” Chris said.

It also hosts galas for a good cause. Earlier this year, the Mardi Gras Gala helped net $175,000 for the philanthropic Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation to support its rebuild in Marathon.

Royal Furniture has three showrooms in the Florida Keys, plus a warehouse and distribution center on the mainland.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Rubio continues the tradition of honoring America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. The committee oversees proposed legislation on matters relating to the Small Business Administration and investigates all problems relating to America’s small businesses.

UNDERWATER EXPLORATION NASA mission in the Keys simulates space

J

ust 5.4 nautical miles offshore from Tavernier is a reef known as Conch Reef. Situated approximately 63 feet beneath the surface and surrounded by spur and groove coral formations is the world’s only undersea research laboratory, Florida International University’s Aquarius Reef Base.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) originally deployed Aquarius in Salt River Canyon off St. Croix, USVI in 1987. Thirteen missions were conducted in 1988-89 until Hurricane Hugo devastated the island on September 18, 1989. Aquarius was recovered in 1990 and underwent a three-year refurbishment in Wilmington, North Carolina. The undersea lab was redeployed on Conch Reef in 1993.

By providing extended access to one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, Aquarius serves as a unique platform to conduct cutting edge marine science research, facilitate innovative educational programming, and train specialized divers, such as astronauts. The habitat is a 43-by-10-foot diameter steel cylinder divided into three compartments: The wet porch, which provides direct access to the sea, and two pressure locks known

as the entry and main lock, which are 500- and 1,400-cubic-feet respectively.

Beginning June 13, Aquarius will serve as the home base for a fourwoman science crew and two male habitat technicians. This mission will simulate space exploration with a focus on objectives that prepare astronauts for missions to the International Space Station and, eventually, to the Moon and Mars. This mission, NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 23, is a continuation of NEEMO missions that have been conducted at Aquarius since 2001.

Since operations are not simulated, astronauts are immersed in a realistic analogue that often exceed what they experience through other forms of training.

Commanding the NEEMO 23 mission will be Samantha Cristoforetti, from the European Space Agency. She holds the record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight of a European astronaut. Cristoferretti was involved in Expeditions 42 and 43 where she spent 200 days living and working in the extreme environment of space.

The other female crewmembers include Jessica Watkins, a NASA astronaut candidate, Shirley Pomponi, a research professor at Florida Atlantic University who studies sponges and their potential in drug development, and Csilla Ari D’Agostino, assistant professor of neurosciences at the University of South Florida, who will study the psychological effects of living underwa-

ter for an extended period of time.

In addition to being tasked with space exploration objectives, aquanauts will engage in relevant marine science research. For the fourth consecutive year, NASA’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division has teamed with FIU’s Integrative Marine Genomics and Symbiosis (IMaGeS) Lab to better understand coral reef restoration efforts.

Using the extended bottom times afforded by Aquarius, aquanauts can get a lot of work done.

“Physiologically, there is no limit to how long people can spend in saturation while living underwater at Aquarius,” said Catherine Guinovart, Coordinator of Administrative Services for FIU’s Center for Coastal Oceans Research. “This mission will last nine days, but the longest we ever conducted lasted 31 days. The true gift of Aquarius is in the amount of bottom time the divers can have during these missions. Normally when people are diving from a boat at the surface, they can only be on the bottom for a short amount of time before they need to go back to the surface to avoid decompression sickness, but when people are saturated aboard Aquarius they can dive for up to nine hours a day in depths of up to 95 feet.

Riley Hatch, Ph.D. student in FIU’s IMaGeS lab and part of the surfacebased support team, says his team is interested in better understanding the effects that nearby fish communities, and their associated nutrient contribu-

tions, have on the composition, function and health of coral symbioses with microbial and algal assemblages.

“After the conclusion of the fouryear study, the corals will be outplanted on surrounding reefs, thus enriching the genetic variation and increasing coral presence in this critical ecosystem,” Hatch said.

To aid in the study, the Coral Restoration Foundation will provide coral trees and boulder coral fragments on the Aquarius Reef Base. Prior to the mission start, the CRF team will give the astronauts land-based training on how to assemble, install, and attach coral fragments to the structures.

Once the mission begins, astronauts will prepare the study site by attaching boulder coral fragments to PVC trees, erected in a sand plain near Aquarius.

“These unique coral tree nurseries will provide coral restoration practitioners with vital data to help save coral reefs around the world. We are thrilled to be part of this extraordinary mission,” said Amelia Moura, Coral Restoration Foundation science program manager. “The environment at the Aquarius Reef Base is completely different from where we traditionally grow our corals. This makes it an exciting opportunity to further understand how different coral species and different genetic strains within certain species react to different environments, different fish communities, and different light conditions.”

“D

ance is the hidden language of the soul.” ― Martha Graham And Joanne Zimmerman is one busy individual.

Fresh from a major role in the ensemble cast of “Making God Laugh” at the Marathon Community Theater, as well as an earlier role as drag queen in “La Cage Aux Folles,” Joanne is directing this weekend’s “Tah-Dance!” production at the theater. This 11th annual community showcase features local dancers of all ages and dance levels. The show will highlight multiple dance styles, including ballet, belly dance, Bollywood, jazz, lyrical, tapdancing and more.

So what does it take to direct a dance showcase? “First, you need to be able to coordinate a program that’s entertaining to the audience,” said Joanne. “You have to stay on top of the choreography, coordinate the costumes, and keep the show moving.”

Creating a show like this is not easy while having to rehearse and act in two major productions — and when the actor/dancer/director is also an accountant in the middle of tax season! Asked if she slept at all, she said, “I grabbed a wink now and again!” Joanne danced in productions earlier in life in New York (before family), and got back into it after moving to Marathon.

Joanne is quick to credit her fellow instructors and dances in the show. Donna Nussenblatt teaches belly dancing, Bollywood, and Egyptian dance. Lisa Scobba specializes in theatrical and jazz dance, and taught professionally in her own huge dance studio in Tennessee. Though she retired, she just couldn’t stay away from contributing to dance at the theater and teaching at Keys Dance Academy. Cami Holdinga dances in just about everything and teaches lyrical dance. As a doctor of physical therapy, she understands movement and assists dancers with their motion. Cheryl Wilcox has been involved with the theater for years. She specializes in tap, and has performed in and danced in many musicals at MCT. In addition to the instructors, the theater held open auditions — three students from Body Language and six students from Keys Dance Academy will dance in the show as well. It

seems dance runs in Joanne’s family — her daughter Jamie Stevens runs KDA! Joanne stresses that the main thing is having fun: “We JOHN really like each other. And that passion for dance doesn’t end with the show. The theater year begins July 1, and dance classes are available free to theater members. All instructors are experienced volunteers, and the classes are free. (Yes, free.) Additionally, theater members get $5 off tickets to productions throughout the year. Joanne hopes people will come out, enjoy the show, and embrace the talent that is right here in Marathon.

She shared a quote that is on the wall of their practice room at the theater: “You don’t quit dancing because you grow old — you grow old because you quit dancing!” Joanne notes that dance stimulates the body and mind, memory, balance, and can provide a good cardio workout as well. “We have dancers with us in their 70s,” Joanne says. “Even the snowbirds come to our classes to continue to be active!”

If Joanne Zimmerman is any indicator, dance will keep you active and alive and capable of handling just about anything: three theater productions, tax season CPA clients, and all the work she does on the board of Dolphin Research Center.

eesam Khoury works in the media department of the state Department of Environmental Protection Agency: While there are many unpredictable factors at play during a hurricane, wind and sediment have the most impact on mangroves.

Wind can strip the leaves off a tree, create a loss of moisture within the remaining tree, and damage the root system. Leaf loss reduces photosynthesis, the way a plant derives energy. Dehydration can also create a salt imbalance in the tree, and damaged roots reduce the water and nutrient uptake ability. When combined, these factors often result in tree decline.

Sediment can affect individual trees or a mangrove system by a direct increase or loss of sediments at the tree base, resulting in suffocation or stability/root loss. Sediment transport can also indirectly affect mangroves by changing the hydrology of the system. For instance, black mangrove systems are typically found in areas with high salinity and a very specific tidal regimen. They have pneumatophores (or snorkel roots) that stick up out of the mud to about an inch above the typical high water line, allowing the tree to get oxygen into its system. These systems are particularly susceptible to sediment transport that changes the hydrology by only a couple of inches. The build-up of small berms that often occur during these storms was the reason many black mangrove systems died in the Ten Thousand Islands after Hurricane Andrew.

The good news is that mangroves are adapted to tropical and subtropical areas of the world in which hurricanes and typhoons are a common element. Mangroves produce seeds in large quantities, sprouting easily and growing very quickly. In addition, the three species of mangroves in Florida favor specific elevations and tidal regimens. With a slight change in either from sediment transport, the new mangrove forest that develops may not be the same type of mangrove system that was there before. In rare cases the system may transition into an open water pond, but generally it very quickly becomes a thriving young forest again, supporting the basics for life in the Keys waters.

It is important to remember that this information is based on observation, as research has not been published yet on Hurricane Irma.

n June 1, the Body Language dancers took to the very large stage at Marathon High School. They needed every inch of it. Seventy-five dancers performed in 33 dances, all related to the over-the-top showmanship of P.T. Barnum in “The Greatest Show.” Body Language Director Rachel Volpe said there were many incredible moments that were organic, which she realized only after watching the video recording of the performance. She said some of the kids “free-styled” their moment on stage perfectly. “They have a prop, and four seconds to do whatever they like. They stayed in character and came up with really original moves,” Volpe said. “You know, the show starts in your mind, your thoughts … to see it come alive was amazing.” The dance studio has limited openings for its summer camp. n June 8, volunteer officers from Monroe County Sheriff's Office worked through the morning and well into the afternoon on renovations and updates at the Marathon campus of the Florida Keys SPCA. The community workday was organized by Sgt. Lissette Quintero, who chose the nonprofit organization as the recipient. Additionally, Sgt. Quintero coordinated with Home Depot manager Michael Rivera on the supplies needed for the day.

Rivera's team was able to donate the much-needed items for the renovation.

The team built new white picket fencing as safe and appropriate yard space for small dogs, and installed new AstroTurf in each dog play yard. The main focus of the

workday was the spay and neuter trailer, new to the Marathon Campus. The trailer — which will be providing low-cost and free spay and neuter surgeries, low-cost vaccinations and microchipping services — was moved up from the Key West Campus when their new building recently opened to the public. Having served its purpose in Key West, the trailer was in need of some rehabbing. MCSO's team installed new laminate flooring and cleaned and painted the structure. The trailer will require more work before it is ready for the public, but the Florida Keys SPCA hopes for an end-of-summer opening. —Contributed

VOA Veterans and their families paddled out for a morning kayak trip through Islamorada's mangroves and then headed out to sea with Rainbow Reef Dive Center for a 2-tank dive adventure on French Reef. VOA creates free opportunities for veterans to experience camaraderie with other veterans and the healing power of water.

NEW SCHOOL Academy serves special needs children

A

new academy opening in the Upper Keys is providing the full gamut of services for kids, teens and young adults with special needs.

With schools in Kendall and Little Havana, Carpe Diem Academy is opening a new facility in Key Largo at MM 95, bayside. The academy, which has served the special needs community since 2005, serves those ages 3-22.

Previously, special needs children in the Keys who attended Carpe Diem Academy were bused daily to Kendall for schooling. Now, they will be able to get the services, attention and therapy they need locally. Along with the school, Carpe Diem Academy in Key Largo has a therapy office next door.

Amanda Quevedo, finance and human resources director, said occupational, physical, speech and behavioral therapy services are provided. With its three locations in Florida, Carpe Diem Academy has a staff of 55 who are educational instructors, nurses, mental health counselors and therapists among other licensed professionals.

“There’s nothing that we cannot do,” she said.

Quevedo also said students can receive credit through the virtual school while receiving the oneon-one attention they need.

The academy is creating an opportunity for special needs students to have initial classroom experience in conjunction with an intensive therapeutic and technological environment.

NAVAL AIR STATION HONORS CAPT. BAKER, WELCOMES CAPT. SOHANEY

he Naval Air Station at Boca Chica was teeming with local officials, business owners, civilians, sailors and officers of all stripes on Thursday, June 6 – as it happened, the 75th anniversary of D-Day – for the Change of Command Ceremony. The Key West High School marching band played for the ceremony, closing with a rousing rendition of “Anchors Aweigh.”

The town and base bid farewell to Captain Bobby Baker, who was honored in a number of ways: Commander of the Southeast Navy Region Rear Admiral Gary Mayes presented Baker with a Legion of Merit award, and guest speaker Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar, Commander of the Southwest Navy Region, sang his praises, and had a little fun teasing “Beetle” as well.

When he took the podium, Baker laughed that he’s been “manager of the biggest hotel in Key West,” and went on to talk about the “awesome responsibility” of his job as commander. Baker said he could claim with “complete confidence that being the commander of the best naval air station in the nation was the best job in the entire Navy.” Baker also thanked his wife, Chantal, and his family.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” he said.

“Well, I’ve been a child in many villages.” Baker spoke to members of his family and the community by name, and Key West welcomed visitors from Naval bases across the nation, as well as Baker’s fellow alumni from West Point.

The day wasn’t just a farewell, but also a “hello.” The Key West and Navy communities welcomed Capt. Mark Sohaney and his wife, Zina, and their children. Sohaney and Baker have quite a bit in common — not only are they nicknamed Navy men (Sohaney goes by “Soho”), but they also have both logged over 3,000 flight hours and have been awarded the Legion of Merit.

Sohaney took over command of the base at the ceremony, having recently relocated his family from his previous station in Hawaii. The Weekly will run a full interview with Capt. Sohaney in next week’s paper. We thank Capt. Baker for his service to the community and welcome the new commander!
