CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON SOUTHERNMOST POCKET PARK

“W

e’ve broken ground on the 13-story condominium building that’s going up,” Michael Halpern says.

Construction has started on the 1400 block of Duval, but Halpern’s kidding about the condo part. The developer, lawyer and owner of the Southernmost House has gotten used to vocal critics, most recently of his pocket park project — the real reason they’re breaking ground on the south end of Duval Street. He estimates it will be open to the public in less than six months.

The city commission voted in favor of moving ahead with the project in May, with two dissenters: Sam Kaufman and Jimmy Weekley. Others, like Clayton Lopez, whose district it’s in, are glad that “it’s actually moving.”

Halpern has been meeting with people about the park for nearly 10 years—including two previous city planners, Donald Craig and Thaddeus Cohen.

“The idea was originally a city of Key West idea,” said Halpern. “For 10 years, the city has had plans to make more beautiful the last block of Duval Street, and it was always a target block for a pedestrian mall.”

Halpern has been a longtime supporter of the project. Lopez sees more sides to it.

“I know that not everyone understands or appreciates what we’re getting here. It is a trade off, yes,” Lopez said. “But, we’re working in tandem to correct an issue that has been no small one for a long time, and only getting worse.”

Lopez and Halpern both cite the current state of the street as a primary motivation for the public-private partnership to clean up the south end of Duval.

“It’s a traffic nightmare: traffic gets in and can’t get out,” said Halpern. “There is a crime and drug problem on the street on a constant basis. And it’s unattractive, and it’s dirty, smelly and it floods regularly.” The rotting seaweed problem is consistent in the summers, making the street fetid-smelling, and the street often floods. The scant parking spaces are difficult to navigate in and out of, and the big green Dumpster has held center stage in recent years.

Despite that, critics have cited losing parking and making it a private enterprise in a public space as two deterrents. Halpern’s Seaside Café and the Southernmost Beach Café, across the street, will both be able to put tables in the pocket park for their respective restaurants. They struck a deal with the city by agreeing to pay 6.5% of profits back to the city.

“This will be a first, where the city rents out property for the purpose of having an outdoor café,” said Halpern, citing many other seaside municipalities that boast rows of outdoor cafes, to great success. As the city — namely Mayor Teri Johnston — has charged ahead with downtown revitalization efforts, including the Mall on Duval, the time was right to move ahead with the pocket park.

“We’re getting a true park by the Atlantic Ocean,” Lopez said, “and it’s not costing anywhere near what the Mall on Duval is costing. … It impacts only two businesses that want it and have done so for some

time.” The businesses in question, Southernmost House Hotel and Southernmost Beach Resort, have wanted it so much that they made it a pretty sweet deal for the city.

Besides the restaurant profit-sharing, all of the construction is privately funded, shared by the Southernmost properties.

The park will be single-level instead of having a sidewalk and street level. There will be “beautiful” pavers, landscaping and sculpted art. It will be closed to all traffic, 365 days a year, and Halpern has invested in fixing the drainage issue.

“It’s our hope that it’s the beginning of the future improvements of Duval Street.

Once the public and the government realize what an asset it is to the community, other blocks will follow,” said Halpern.

Lopez said that regardless of “some folks” not liking his support of the park, “I hope to win them over when it’s completed.

Some locals hope that more private enterprise and public entity partnerships follow, in order to clean up the street that for many years was Key West’s crown jewel. The park, along with Mall on Duval, might just be a step in the direction to return to the yesterday’s close-knit local feel.”

The name, if it goes Halpern’s way, wouldn’t hurt.

“It’s my hope that the city calls it the Ramos or Ramos-Lopez Park, after the families that lived on this block, on each side of the street.”

he Florida Keys are connected by so much more than the Overseas Highway and a new walking tour app, produced in connection with the Florida Humanities Council and the Keys History & Discovery Center, reveals the conduit of history.

Walk Indian Key, the newest addition to the Florida Stories program, offers a surprising glimpse into one of the hidden gems of the island chain.

The 11-acre island just offshore of the Matecumbe keys was a thriving wrecking community in the 1830s before it was destroyed in an Indian attack during the second escalation of the Seminole War. Twelve stops are included in the tour, which has been professionally recorded, accompanied by background music, and augmented with imagery. What Walk Indian Key demonstrates, beyond some really cool history, is the integral role Key Vaca and Key West played in the development of the island.

While the island is only accessible by kayak or boat (though the boat dock is still inaccessible due to damage suffered during Hurricane Irma), the free, downloadable app can either enhance a physical visit to the island or provide a virtual one. he chalkboard that greets visitors to the recently opened Mata Yoga on White Street reads “Welcome back,” a nod to the legacy of the studio space and the longevity of the community it serves. Owners and teachers Tara Darmante and Marci L. Rose met at the studio in 2006 when it was owned by Teresa Warburton.

Warburton mentored Darmante and Rose, encouraging them to pursue Bikram yoga teacher certification.

“Teresa Warburton was the mother of yoga in the Keys. She opened the first studio in Monroe County,” said Rose. Darmante and Rose are honoring their mentor with the studio name itself; Mata is Sanskrit for mother.

The studio’s large tree mural, painted by local artist Victoria Diamond, pays homage to Warburton as well as late owner and teacher Danny Sine. Sine owned the studio from 2008 until his death last year.

The wall-spanning mural includes the subtle image of a mother and child within the trunk of the tree and the figure of a boy fishing from its branches. “If you know Danny, you’ll know that’s him sitting on the branch,” said Darmante. For Darmante, who left Canada, and everything she owned, for Key West 13 years ago, the legacy of the studio is one she is proud to continue, “This is where the lineage started; it was Teresa and then it was Danny and now it’s us. It’s our turn to carry it on.”

Rose, who came to Key West from New York in 1983 to spend

time with her treasure-salvaging father, has been a part of and fortified by the yoga community for years, “When you practice next to somebody, you’re bonded.” She counts teaching yoga as an invaluable part of her life, “My other career is law and yoga balances me, no pun intended. The yoga that we teach is not just physical; you take it off the mat and into your life.”

Both Rose and Darmante hope to cultivate a space that feels inclusive and warm, literally and otherwise. “The vibe of the studio is peace, love, and happiness,” said Darmante, “In this studio, after class or before, it sounds like there’s a party going on. … The community here is super strong and joyful.”

To celebrate the spirit of that community and give back to it, Darmante and Rose are offering a month of complimentary classes, a gift they’ve dubbed “karma yoga.”

Throughout June, all classes at Mata Yoga are offered free. “When you give, you get; that’s the way karma works,” said Rose, who hopes the complimentary classes draw both veteran yoga practitioners and those who are new to the mat.

Mata offers traditional 90-minute Bikram classes, a 60-minute Bikram express and a 60-minute Vinyasa flow. Darmante and Rose plan to expand the schedule to include Pilates fusion classes and workshops.

The pair are joined by local teachers Scott Wiles and Konnae Berces. Current class schedules can be found on the Mata Studio Facebook page.

oming out here and doing these kinds of things definitely opens your eyes to all the day-to-day things we do that are bad for the environment, like drinking from water bottles.

It’s definitely an eye opener,” said Casey Riggs, leaning over a bag of trash just picked up off Boca Chica Key Beach. Riggs, a recent Keys transplant, was stationed at the Naval Air Station located on Boca Chica Key and decided to spend the day with his wife Katie and kids, Amelia, 4, Maddie, 2, and Preston, 4 months, cleaning up their new neighborhood.

The Riggs family and many other volunteers came and participated in a Reef Relief cleanup at Boca Chica Key Beach. Reef Relief is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to improving and protecting our coral reef ecosystem. Dora Demaria, a Reef Relief staff member, described how a few Reef Relief staff had been there on their own free time and noticed how dirty it was. So, the organization decided to host a cleanup.

“It was really exciting to see over 50 volunteers come out on a nice Sunday to help clean up this site, because it’s an important area for nesting sea turtles and sea birds,” said Demaria.

In total, 808 pounds of trash were collected off the beach after an hour and a half of work. When asked what stood out the most, the answer was unanimous: the amount of bottle caps and flip flops. For all the volunteers, the amount of plastic washed up in the sargassum was an overwhelming sight. “When I first looked at the beach, I couldn’t believe the amount of trash that washed up on shore,” said Allyson DeMerlis, an intern at Mote Marine Laboratory on Summerland Key. “It really is a plastic world.”

For the Riggses, the event wasn’t just about cleaning up the beach, but rather setting a precedent for future cleanups and community values. “We wanted (our kids) to know, from a very young age, that it’s important for them to come out and help protect the environment by cleaning up their beaches and recycling properly, so it doesn’t end up here in the first place,” said Casey and Katie Riggs about raising their children.

Because of the overwhelming plastic problem facing our oceans, there have been more beach cleanup events happening in the Keys and worldwide. Reef Relief aims to host a cleanup every month, and the best way to stay informed about these events is to follow the nonprofit’s Facebook page.

JUNETEENTH IN KEY WEST EDUCATION, WITH A HEALTHY SIDE OF CELEBRATION

C

ultural tourism is on the rise, nationally and internationally, and in Key West, there’s a particular draw for African American travelers — especially this June. Three years ago, Ebony magazine wrote: “African American history is deeply embedded in the fabric of this island’s splendor,” adding that Key West is “a real winner for Black travelers.” In June, visitors can celebrate the roots of this cultural heritage by observing Juneteenth with their own self-guided tour of the island.

July 4th isn’t the only Independence Day in the US. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves learned of their freedom. Legally, slavery had ended nearly three years earlier with the Emancipation Proclamation. Not surprisingly though, slave owners weren’t in a hurry to alert black Americans and displaced Africans of the new laws.

In an era predating modern media, news traveled slowly. Juneteenth was quietly celebrated in those

early years but didn’t gain traction until the Civil Rights movement blazed a path for the holiday to take its rightful place. Even now, however, Juneteenth celebrations are not yet ubiquitous. Since Key West does not have a formal holiday, it’s up to locals and visitors to find their own ways to honor the date.

The natural start to a Juneteenth trek around Key West begins with a visit to one of Key West’s most important historical sites, the African Cemetery at Higgs Beach. In 1859, the U.S. Navy placed a blockade on Americanowned slave ships in order to stop trafficking. The following year, the Navy intercepted three illegal slave ships, bound for Cuba, and diverted them to Key West, rescuing 1,432 Africans. The island community built shelter and provided food and treatment to the displaced Africans, but sadly lost 294 lives, and those lost are memorialized on Higgs Beach.

Another important, if also somber, stop is the Henriette Marie exhibition (“A Slave Ship Speaks”) at the Mel Fisher Marine

Museum, a permanent display of artifacts from a sunken slave ship.

In 1700, the ship sank 35 miles off the coast of Key West, littering the ocean floor with what would one day become the most well preserved slave ship artifacts in the world. Relics such as the iron bars used as currency to purchase enslaved people (12 bars for a male, 9 for a female — a particularly chilling detail) reveal details of this dark chapter in history. Memorializing the unimaginable price African Americans paid unwittingly to help build our nation is part of most Juneteenth celebrations.

For a less formal introduction to black cultural heritage in Key West, visitors need to absorb Bahama Village, the area encompassing 16 blocks surrounding iconic Petronia Street. In the late 1700s, Bahamians immigrated to Key West, seeking work salvaging wrecks and fishing. Bahama Village has survived for hundreds of years since as the historically black neighborhood in Key West. While intrusions of a changing economic

structure are evident, a stroll through the area reveals resilient small businesses, original homes that have been passed down through generations, and The Frederick Douglass Gym, which serves as a community gathering point.

One of the brightest and best displays of Key West’s cultural heritage can be found in its music.

The island possesses a unique Afro-Cuban soundtrack that can be heard wafting out of cars and bars, and that’s not all. Community efforts like the Bahama Village Music Program have helped usher in new generations of musicians of color through their nonprofit programming. For live music experiences, nothing compares with The Green Parrot. The day after Juneteenth, the Parrot hosts Cayo Ritmo for three sets of Caribbean Dance Music, Funk, R&B and Reggaeton, keeping the tone of the holiday, while allowing cultural tourists a chance to relax. From harrowing history lessons to joyful tunes, Key West offers a wealth of insight for those willing to look.

he Seaside Café is tucked behind the stately Southernmost Mansion, divided from the infinity pool by a new hedgerow.

Michael Halpern stands at a neighboring table and tells a group of tourists: “The food sucks but the view is beautiful.”

Halpern, owner of the Southernmost Mansion, grins as he delivers the line, because, well, the food is great. It’s also prepared by his son, Rafe Halpern, who went to Johnson & Wales in Denver and worked at restaurants there before joining his dad in Key West and opening the Seaside Café, an unassuming aqua food truck whose permanent home is the backyard of the mansion. The cafe is open to the public, and will soon expand into the pocket park the senior Halpern is opening on the south end of Duval (see p. 7).

Even in the shadow of arguably the most iconic house on the island, little Seaside Café shines.

“I’ve always loved making pizzas and loved seafood and wanted to do something different that no one else was doing — everything on our menu is unique.” Truly, the Seaside Café puts a signature spin on items seen elsewhere around Key West — pizzas

and lobster rolls are reinvented. The lobster salad—a simple and tasty mix of lobster meat and mayo—is served on a fluffy-on-the-inside, crunchy-onthe-outside biscuit with honey butter.

The biscuit has a flavor reminiscent of funnel cake, giving the sandwich a Martha’s Vineyard-by-way-of-a-carnival feel. It’s delicious and decadent, complemented well by a refreshing and light cocktail. Their signature mojitos are garnished with a stick of rock candy, which sweetens the drink nicely as it melts.

The Artisan Wood-Fired Pizza section of the menu is the highlight.

There’s the luxurious lobster Bianca pie with fontina cheese and the truffled mushroom pizza with carmelized onions, but the unexpected favorite is the Duval Street corn pizza.

With roasted corn, bacon, basil aioli, garlicky cream sauce and four cheeses, it’s a savory union of Italian, American and Mexican flavors. While the menu skews decadent — they serve a very competent plate of truffle fries with shaved parmesan, yes, please — there are also lighter options. The spring and strawberry mix salad and the woodfired caprese with fresh mozzarella, arugula and balsamic tomatoes will both please veggie-lovers.

Of course, riffing isn’t reinventing the wheel, and thank goodness for that; a meal at the Southernmost wouldn’t be finished without a slice of Key lime pie. Halpern offers pina colada and mango varieties, in addition to the classic. Does it even need to be said that they’re right about the view? With the sea ahead and the beautiful pink house behind, the fresh, tasty food is just (delicious) icing on the cake.

he Naval Air Station at Boca Chica was teeming with local officials, business owners, civilians, sailors and officers of all stripes on Thursday, June 6 – as it happened, the 75th anniversary of D-Day – for the Change of Command Ceremony. The Key West High School marching band played for the ceremony, closing with a rousing rendition of “Anchors Aweigh.”

The town and base bid farewell to Captain Bobby Baker, who was honored in a number of ways: Commander of the Southeast Navy Region Rear Admiral Gary Mayes presented Baker with a Legion of Merit award, and guest speaker Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar, Commander of the Southwest Navy Region, sang his praises, and had a little fun teasing “Beetle” as well.

When he took the podium, Baker laughed that he’s been “manager of the biggest hotel in Key West,” and went on to talk about the “awesome responsibility” of his job as commander. Baker said he could claim with “complete confidence that being the commander of the best naval air station in the nation was the best job in the entire Navy.” Baker also thanked his wife, Chantal, and his family.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” he said.

“Well, I’ve been a child in many villages.” Baker spoke to members of his family and the community by name, and Key West welcomed visitors from Naval bases across the nation, as well as Baker’s fellow alumni from West Point.

The day wasn’t just a farewell, but also a “hello.” The Key West and Navy communities welcomed Capt. Mark Sohaney and his wife, Zina, and their children. Sohaney and Baker have quite a bit in common — not only are they nicknamed Navy men (Sohaney goes by “Soho”), but they also have both logged over 3,000 flight hours and have been awarded the Legion of Merit.

Sohaney took over command of the base at the ceremony, having recently relocated his family from his previous station in Hawaii. The Weekly will run a full interview with Capt. Sohaney in next week’s paper. We thank Capt. Baker for his service to the community and welcome the new commander!

his just energizes us to do more,” said Ryan Elwell.

“My parents are tickled pink. It makes them feel good that the second generation continues on and uses profits for the good of the community,” said Chris Elwell. “It touches all of us in a different way.”

The two brothers are referring to a huge honor, recently bestowed, on the family company — Royal Furniture. Late last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio named it the Senate Small Business of the Week.

“The Elwell family, and the entire team at Royal Furniture and Design, are an incredible example of a hard working small business that is always looking out for their community. It is my honor to name them as the Senate Small Business of the Week. I wish them nothing but success in their future endeavors,” Rubio said in a statement.

Chris said the family has been informed Rubio will be visiting the Keys soon.

“He’s going to be giving us the award in person,” Chris said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

In addition to the company’s longevity (founded in 1984) and success comes a third focus — community giving. In 2016, the

family was named as the American Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year. And, since Hurricane Irma, the family and business have ramped up efforts to support the storm-ravaged islands.

Ryan said the family business has worked with many agencies — such as Compass88, Samuel’s House and FarmShare — to coordinate donations for Keys residents. In addition, it partners with professional real estate organizations to support charities and raise money for scholarships.

“We tallied up the amounts and it’s over $50,000 so far,” Chris said.

It also hosts galas for a good cause. Earlier this year, the Mardi Gras Gala helped net $175,000 for the philanthropic Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation to support its rebuild in Marathon.

Royal Furniture has three showrooms in the Florida Keys, plus a warehouse and distribution center on the mainland.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Rubio continues the tradition of honoring America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. The committee oversees proposed legislation on matters relating to the Small Business Administration and investigates all problems relating to America’s small businesses.

hef Guillaume Pailloux of Fly Away Café came to Key West as a teenager from Quebec. Tired of shoveling snow (and manure) on the family dairy farm, Pailloux – who maintains that cow’s milk warm from the udder is an unparalleled hangover cure – headed south for greener pastures.

After an initial stint at a lemonade stand, Pailloux’s culinary education came courtesy of chef Danny Hatch, who gave him his first kitchen job at Blue Heaven, and Alice Weingarten, former owner of Alice’s On Duval, who encouraged Pailloux to explore fusion cooking.

Pailloux also credits his craft to a steady morning diet of Bobby Flay’s “Grillin’ and Chillin”’ TV series and the years spent watching his French grandmother prepare family meals. It’s knowledge he’s passed to his four children. Pailloux is the proud father of Autumn Kloud, 20, Kanaan Sundance, 11, Lucille Monroe, 7, and latest addition Liam Reef, 14 months. The cooking gene is carried by son Kanaan, who recently cooked his dad chili as an early Father’s Day gift, and daughter Lucille, an experimental baker and aspiring popsicle artist.

Pailloux helped design and implement the menu at Salute! On the Beach, before joining Yolande Findlay at Fly Away Café at Boca Chica marina at the Naval Air Station. Since taking the business over from Findlay last year, Pailloux has implemented new recipes and continued to follow his passion for “feeding good people good food.” His favorite part of Fly Away Café?

The three kitchen windows that afford him views of the ocean outside while he works.

With his eldest child in college and youngest still in diapers, veteran dad Pailloux has some advice for new fathers and fathers-to-be: “Stay home. Get yourself comfortable, get a blow-up pool, get the hose in there, crank up some music. I barely fit in the pool, but the kids love it.” Most important for Pailloux is that his children remember him as being present. “Fatherhood is so heartwarming; it’s amazing. All you have to do is be here; that’s all they need.

All I want is for my kids to have good memories.”

Pailloux’s blended family includes wife Sam Cox Pailloux and former partner Tee Paturno with whom he shares holidays and parenting duties. How do they make it work? “It takes understanding, patience, love and gratitude … maybe some alcohol.”

Pailloux is happy to grow his family and business in Key West. “My favorite part of leaving is the drive back. I know it’s the longest three hours – from Homestead to here – but it’s gorgeous; turquoise oceans, people going fishing. ey West Literary Seminar is accepting applications for the last two spots in its Young Writers Studio to be held June 24-28 in Key West.

All Monroe County high school students are encouraged to apply at kwls.org/youngwriters. Participating students will spend five days exploring Key West and learning about great American authors who have lived and worked here.

Each afternoon will feature a writing workshop led by distinguished visiting writer Nicole Dennis-Benn, novelist and lecturer in the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University. A special daylong excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park will culminate the week’s site-specific writing. The program is completely free for those students who are selected. Apply at kwls.org/youngwriters.

Key West Literary Seminar is also currently accepting applications for its annual Emerging Writer Awards. Poets and writers who have not yet published a book with a major publisher are eligible to apply. Applications are now available at kwls.org/awards. The deadline for submissions is June 28, 2019.

Winners receive full tuition to this year’s seminar, “Reading Between the Lines: Sports & Literature,” Jan. 9-12, 2020; full tuition to attend the Writers’ Workshop Program Jan. 13-17, 2020; roundtrip airfare; full lodging support; a $500 honorarium; and the opportunity to appear on stage during the seminar.

The Emerging Writer Awards recognize and support writers who possess exceptional talent and demonstrate potential for lasting literary careers. Each of the three prizes is tailored to a particular literary form. The Scotti Merrill Award recognizes a poet, while fiction writers may apply for either the Cecelia Johnson Award (for a short story) or the Marianne Russo Award (for a novel-in-progress). Past winners have gone on to sign contracts with major publishers and enjoy successful writing careers.

Aqueduct Authority holds contest

T

he Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority has recognized Monroe County students who participated in the American Water Works Association 2019 Drop Savers Poster Contest. The annual contest is open to students in Monroe County and promotes water conservation education and awareness.

School division winners were chosen from hundreds of entries by teams of FKAA staff judges, and from them, posters were judged based on message, creativity and originality, not just artistic ability. Division winners at the school, county and state level won individual and classroom monetary awards as well as a host of other prizes.

Winners were Uma Vogan, first-grader from Basilica School of St Mary Star of the Sea, K-1st grade; Kemmeila Jernigan, third-grader from Ocean Studies Charter School in the 2nd to 3rd grade category; Nevaeh Fain, fifth-grader from Key Largo School, 4th to 5th-fifth grade; Lucie Bublakova, sixth-grader from Horace O’Bryant School, 6th to 8th grade; and Liv Castillo, sophomore from Key West High School, in the high school category. Honorable mentions include Rhyanna Rispoli, Division 3 runner-up from May Sands Montessori, and Angelina Bello, Division 4 runner-up from Key Largo School.

he 6th annual Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards are in full swing as the nominee voting period enters the second week. Voters have through June 24 to nominate their favorites in more than 90 categories. From there, the top three in each category will compete for your votes leading up to the big night.

And while the winners will be named on July 20 at the awards banquet, the excitement around winning a Bubba, along with the red carpet festivities, has become the essence of this remarkable community event. Here is a look back at some of 2018’s winners.

1. You never know what to expect at the Bubbas, but the celebrity lip sync battles have become epic. In 2018 the stage belonged to Bill Lay and Nick Doll, who mastered their own rendition of Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball.” Doll also took home the Bubba for best photographer, while Lay took home honors for “Best Martini” (Virgilo’s) and several nominations for La Trattoria Oceanside.

2. This year will mark the first Bubba Awards ceremony where Craig Cates will not be mayor of Key West. In five years, Cates has won “Best Elected Official” every single time — meaning this year marks the first time for a new public servant to step up and take the prize. Seen here is his buddy Howard Livingston, who has taken home “Best Local Celebrity” each and every year.

3. Speaking of “Best Local Celebrity,” we never miss an opportunity to pick on our favorite bridesmaid. Bill Hoebee (seen here accepting an award for his pal Wyland) has finished second to Howard Livingstion for five straight years. Will this be the year Hoebee dethrones the king?

4. The Bubbas are a Key West event, but when you receive as many votes (each and every year) as Lynn Bell and her Square Grouper empire receive each year, we are always happy to spread the love to the Lower Keys. Bell has grabbed the Bubba for “Best Seafood” for many years running.

FEMA CHECK FOR DEBRIS REMOVAL

MUCARSEL-POWELL ANNOUNCES NEARLY $6 MILLION IN REIMBURSEMENTS

t the recent hurricane preparation town hall meeting in Marathon, U.S. Rep. Debbie MucarselPowell pledged to hold FEMA accountable for promised funding to Monroe County for Hurricane Irma recovery. Now, progress is being made.

On June 11, Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Economic Development, Public Buildings & Emergency Management Subcommittee of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is awarding $5,911,779 to Monroe County for debris removal resulting from Hurricane Irma.

“I’m relieved to see this longoverdue funding to help Monroe County recover from Hurricane

Irma,” said Mucarsel-Powell. “South Florida is no stranger to hurricanes and severe storms, so we must continue working to ensure that our communities are prepared for this year’s hurricane season and future storms. We need to keep pressure on both state and federal governments to work expeditiously to ensure that our communities receive the full funding they are owed.”

This award provides federal funding to Monroe County for debris removal costs as a result of Hurricane Irma. The funding is authorized under the Robert T. Stafford Act. FEMA obligates funding for these projects directly to the state. It is the state’s responsibility to ensure that the eligible sub-recipients receive these awards.

SUMMER STAGE TO PRESENT FREE READING OF PRIZE-WINNING DRAMA

K

ey West’s Summer Stage 2019 continues this week with a free staged reading of “Cost of Living” by Martyna Majok, last year’s winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play also won two Lucille Lortel awards and was nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award.

The reading will take place Monday, June 17 at the Red Barn Theatre, 319 Duval St., beginning at 7 p.m. The performance is free, with seating on a first-come, first seated basis. The Red Barn’s outdoor bar will open at 6:30 p.m., and beverages can be taken into the theater for the reading.

“Cost of Living” is a look at need and connection. It challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves into the ways class, race, nationality and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. Eddie, an unemployed truck driver, and his estranged ex-wife, Ani, find themselves unexpectedly reunited after a terrible accident leaves her a quadriplegic. John, a brilliant doctoral student with cerebral palsy, hires Jess, a first-generation recent graduate who has fallen on desperate times, as his new aide.

Majok examines the disabled and their caretakers, whose lives can be just as precarious despite not having to cope with the physical

limitations of those they’re paid to assist.

The reading will star top Key West actors Mathias Maloff, Melody G. Moore, Arthur Crocker, and Tammy Shanley. It will be directed

by TheatreXP’s Bob Bowersox, who will also lead a talk back discussion on the play after the performance.

Attendees are encouraged to remain after the reading to talk with the cast about it.

The NY Times called the play “Immensely haunting… intense…I f you don’t find yourself in someone in the play, you’re not looking.”

The LA Times said, “…a tale of need and selfish pride…every naked moment is dramatically accounted for with enormous care…”

here are many kinds of success in life worth having. It is exceedingly interesting and attractive to be a successful business man, or railway man, or farmer, or a successful lawyer or doctor; or a writer, or a President, or a ranchman, or the colonel of a fighting regiment, or to kill grizzly bears and lions.

But for unflagging interest and enjoyment, a household of children, if things go reasonably well, certainly makes all other forms of success and achievement lose their importance by comparison.” –Theodore Roosevelt For a man who was president of the United States—and known to kill grizzly bears and lions—the statement that, in comparison, children make those achievements “lose their importance,” is a powerful one.

Of course, it’s also a statement I’ve heard fathers, including my own, echo the world over. My father also told me to never “forget my name” when I left the house (we had a big marble “T” for “Thomas” doorstopper at the front door, in case I was tempted to) and “remember where you came from.” I thought a lot as a kid about the different ways to remember where I came from. Did that mean Tennessee? Did that mean remember that my family didn’t always have much money, and that they worked hard to earn it? Did it reference the moral values they instilled in me from a young age?

I came to realize that, at its core, it means the same thing as remembering my name. It’s who I came from: my mom and dad, and my grandparents, who, by the lucky lottery of my birth, were also great parents.

It means remember all of those that came before that shaped who I am. Of course, not all of us are so fortunate to inherit great dads by the accident of birth. Plenty of my friends have difficult relationships with their fathers (mothers, too, but that’s another day); some don’t speak; some have lost them to addiction or death. That long shadow in the space where a father otherwise would be is all the more reason to celebrate the incredible fathers that we do have. While we look to fathers for good examples of how to live, we also listen to their words.

So we asked Key West dads: what’s the most important piece of fatherly advice that you hope your children follow?

s all of Key West languishes under a vibrant orange canopy, the City Commission has proclaimed June as Royal Poinciana Tree Month.

The proclamation was made to honor not just the island’s flamboyant trees, but also the name of the woman who founded the city’s tree commission in an effort to preserve and enhance the canopy: the late City Commissioner Merili McCoy. These were her favorite trees, recalled her daughter Mimi McCoy Grantham.

“My mother would sit in her favorite place at the top of the lighthouse,” said Grantham, “and say that looking out over the island it would look as if it were on fire. Well, the fire is starting to be put out.”

Grantham noted that Royal Poincianas – named the official tree of Key West in May 2018 – only live about 40 years. In recent years, some property owners have opted to replace the trees with those that don’t drop so many leaves and blossoms.

“Being beautiful is hard work,” McCoy said of the maintenance that some complain the tree requires. “But the end result is so rewarding.”

“The Royal Poinciana tree’s peak blooming season takes place during summertime,” notes the proclamation, and “the glorious orange flowers of these trees serve as a major draw to the island of Key West, attracting artists and tourists while offering beauty to those who live here.”

eventy-eight anglers boarded 31 boats on June 8 for what would be a great day of fishing in the Florida Keys Elks Lodge’s 7th annual Ladies Dolphin Tournament. The combined weight of three fish would determine the winners, in this one day fishing event.

“We had great weather and a fantastic turn out,” said tournament co-director Dianne Harbaugh. The tournament kicked off with a boat load of shrimp from Shrimp Improvement Systems, followed by dinner.

When the scales closed, Captain Cecil Everett, fishing aboard his boat the Nuff Said, would lead his anglers to victory. It would be Candace Everett from Key Largo, with the largest fish of the tournament weighing 43.1 pounds that would net her an additional $1,000 check sponsored by Yamaha Outboards, plus a gold dolphin pendant from DePaula Jewelers. Everett was fishing with Tiffany Vega, also from Key Largo. Mate Bobby Everett would gaff the big fish and another two weighing 30.7 and 17.0 pounds for the ladies, producing a combined winning weight of 90.8 pounds.

First place tiaras, bouquets of roses and trophies, sponsored by Upper Keys Marine Construction, were awarded to the winners, along with a large travel bag full of valuable prizes and a check for $3,000.

Captain Everett received a Pasta print sponsored by Caribee Boat Sales. He and his mate each received new fishing rods.

Twelve-year-old junior angler Brianna Sullivan from Naples was awarded the David Wirth circle hook Junior Angler Trophy along with a tiara and bouquet of roses. Brianna was fishing with Jennifer Sullivan aboard the Smile Maker. Brianna’s 16.5-pound fish along with the team’s other two dolphin landed the team in fifth place with a total of 41.3 pounds.

Second place awards, sponsored by Tackle Center of Islamorada, went to local residents Amie Smith along with Jennifer and Rebecca Brito. The team’s fish were caught aboard the Last Dance, captained

by Robert Collins. The team weighed in

The Pile’em In, captained by John McGee with Joe Stanton, would lead anglers Christine McGee of Key Largo, Chelsea Barrett from Tampa, and Carole Prelismick from Hollywood, Florida to the Keys Tropical Windows-sponsored third place trophies. The team weighed in three fish of 29.9, 7.4 and 6.3 pounds for a total of 43.6 pounds.

The team also received a travel bag of goodies and a check for $1000.

The awards ceremony was fit for the queens of the fishing world. “It was great to be able to fill our top 10 winner’s bags with such wonderful items from business throughout the Upper Keys,” said tournament co-director Denny Tarbell. “The Elks have such wonderful charities that this event will help to support. This was the result of a lot of hard work from a great team of people who all came together and put on a tremendous show.” A cooler full of booze was awarded to the lucky raffle ticket holder and the evening concluded with a silent auction. CORALPALOOZA FOUNDATION OUTPLANTS RECORD NUMBERS OF CORAL

W

orld Oceans Day is globally recognized as a time to appreciate, spend time in and care for our oceans. No one is more serious about that than the Coral Restoration Foundation, a non-profit that works across Florida and the Caribbean to restore coral reefs suffering from stony coral disease and resultant tissue loss. The army of divers, staff and volunteers, managed to both work and play during Coralpalooza, and 2019 was a banner year; 250 divers working with CRF returned 1,760 corals to the wild.

Dive boats, like the “Good Times” with Snuba of Key West, departed the morning of June 8 from marinas in the Lower and Upper Keys with teams on a mission to outplant healthy coral on the sensitive reef tracts. Boats visited CRF’s coral tree nurseries, where they grow healthy coral to clip and outplant to the reef tract. CRF has seven coral nurseries throughout the Keys, with the largest nursery off Tavernier covering 1.5 acres and boasting an astounding 500 coral trees, each holding up to 60 coral fragments.

“People down here don’t realize what’s going on two miles out, in the second-biggest reef system in the world,” said J.D. Reinbott, who led the team on the Good Times. A big motivation of Coralpalooza is education. Many people in the

Keys may not realize that the stony coral tissue loss disease is affecting nearly half of the stony coral species on the reef tract. Further, the reef supports over 70,000 jobs in South Florida, so the mission of CRF to restore reef health is a crucial one environmentally and economically. Reinbott acknowledges the strides we’re making.

“Seeing people care about the environment that is so threatened is huge. We are creating stewards of the reef through education, who aren’t going to use oxybenzone sunscreen, who realize what we need to do… over 200 people are helping us with our mission today,” said Reinbott.

Reinbott’s in his third semester as an intern with CRF. He’s done scientific work, educational outreach at schools, beach cleanups and mentorship programs. In this final semester, he gets to be a part of the dive program, working underwater to restore the reefs and the marine life that depends on them. At the first stop at the coral nursery off Key West, volunteer divers cleaned the trees and staff collected fragments to outplant at Marker 32. Ultimately, the team on Good Times outplanted 120 fragments in total.

essing around and doing silly things.” This was my father’s immediate response when I asked him the best part of raising his four children. The flashbacks flooded my memory; weekly Saturday trips to the Jimmies diner, where he alone took up to a dozen young neighborhood kids, telling us we could order whatever we wanted, as long as it was a hot dog; showing my brothers and me how to master the perfect spitball and then blaming one of us when he hit an innocent bystander; teaching us to moon on command (mostly in public and to my mother’s horror), and of course pulling his finger.

My dad, dubbed “Big Rudes” (real name Rudy) is a character for sure. A big kid with a heart of gold whose Italian scream could be heard throughout the neighborhood. He’d scare the living crap out of me with that yell. I’d take off running, my mom begging “Rudy, stop!” I’d head up the stairs to my room, and as soon as he found me, he’d tickle me until I couldn’t breathe, both laughing until we forgot what we were fighting about in the first place.

My mom looked at us like alien creatures as we walked down the stairs hand in hand smiling like nothing had happened.

Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd whose father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised his six kids as a single parent. After hearing a sermon about Mother’s Day,

she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Hats off to Sonora.

Our parents shape us in so many ways. And more often than not, our mothers (deservedly so) get most of the credit. They are tireless in their efforts. They wear so many hats and seem to do it seamlessly. Dads can often be looked at as either the disciplinarian or the fun parent. I feel lucky to have had a dad who was both.

The biggest gift my father gave me was being my friend in addition to my parent. He was the guy I called on New Year’s Eve when I was 13 and my girlfriends and I (innocently) stripped down to our underwear and training bras to do a lap around the block for fun ... and got caught. He and I laughed the whole ride home while my friends were grounded for weeks. Traditional? No. But he knew the difference between adolescent fun and cause for serious concern. “Be kids, but be smart,” he’d say, and “always call me no matter what, without fear of getting punished, but respect for having the courage to admit your mistake.” (This call also came with serious Italian guilt for disappointing him.) He taught us right from wrong, yet knew life is too magnificent not to explore and enjoy.

To my dad, my friend, my confidant, my biggest supporter: thank you. You certainly shaped me as a parent. Made me tough, loving, generous, unorthodox, impatient, with a tendency to lose my cool and a great joy for “messing around and doing silly things.”

Penguins, elephants and conchs … what global environmental flux means to us KARUNA EBERL

Recently an ice shelf collapsed in the Antarctic, and the second largest colony of emperor penguins, thousands of chicks and all, vanished. What is the relevance to us, 7,000 miles away in the subtropics? Well, something. A rather important something.

I

n May, we learned that the web of life that holds our planet’s ecosystems intact, and allows us to farm and fish, is on the verge of failure. The reasons: humans have plowed and paved over three quarters of the land, disrupted two-thirds of the oceans, overfished, and over-poached. On this course, during the next decade, orangutans, tigers, and elephants are expected to become extinct in the wild. A decade or two after that, every one in eight species. That comes out to somewhere around a million kinds of plants and animals, gone. It is on track to be the sixth great planetary extinction.

We are fine. We are Keys strong.

We were leveled by one of the largest hurricanes in history not too long ago, and proved we can survive anything. Here, on this little strip of land, where we are told that the sea is rising all around, many of us are indifferent to climate change.

Our lives are busy, our wallets thin, and these problems are nebulous.

We hear an armageddon soundbite on the news, a neighbor’s viewpoint, a polarizing talking head.

We form an opinion, then move on to other things. Our disconnect with these issues is that they are complex, overwhelming, and seemingly far away. Unfortunately, understanding the urgency of what is taking place, and the science behind it, requires considerable effort.

Why spend the time to learn about problems we don’t see here?

Because the problems are here.

Somewhere upwards of 80 percent of the Keys’ coral has died in the last four decades. Before Irma, we had 6 percent left overall. During that same time, 80 percent of Caribbean reefs have disappeared. There are numerous and complex causes for this, but the science suggests that most of them are human driven. Elsewhere in the seas, green slime is all that remains of life. At least one third of the Great Barrier Reef has bleached and died since 2016. There are 400 ocean “dead zones,” and growing. Insects have all but vanished in some tropical forests.

This is for real.

Those who’ve been diving or fishing here for 30 years likely remember the clearer water, the larger and more abundant fish, and the vibrancy of corals on the reefs. Or, maybe we don’t.

When it comes to nature, people have generational amnesia, or what scientists call shifting baselines. We see a landscape as pristine, because we don’t have a reference for what it was before we experienced it. We also develop what’s been termed “personal amnesia,” where we don’t often notice the gradual decline in abundance of animals and plants through our own lifetimes. But if John James Audubon were to see the Florida Bay today, two centuries later, he would surely note that the ecosystems here have all but crumbled.

nature: biodiversity collapse, poisoned land and water, and the ever-polarizing climate change. They are all in many ways intertwined, especially in the Keys.)

Ninety percent of shallow-water coral reefs will likely die by 2050, because with business as usual, annual coral bleaching is predicted to be the norm by then. Most corals cannot survive that level of stress.

Another problem we face today is the escalating rate of change. What took 100 years to break, is now taking more like 10 or 20. If we have lost three-quarters of the reef in 40 years, and the rate of loss is increasing, then what will we have left in 20 years, or 10? Our minds are not used to adjusting for an exponentially increasing rate of change. We think what happened in the first half of our lives will be about how it goes down in the second. Science tells us that is simply not the case.

This is for real.

Living in a developed nation, we will be the last to feel the dire effects of these pressures on nature. It’s hard to grasp a melting Greenland, a drying Madagascar, or a valley in China where workers, not bees, pollinate the trees.

They are already in the throes of it. By the time we are encapsulated by it, by the time we are truly inconvenienced by contaminated water or in imminent danger of starvation, the situation will be far beyond fixable.

So why are dead emperor penguins important to the Keys? They are our wake-up call. They are our battle cry. The people of the Keys can have all the compassion in the world, for the people of the world, but it means nothing without action.

Starting now, we accept that this is for real.

Our One Human Family doesn’t just extend from mile markers 0 to 107. It includes the Inuit in the Arctic, the eagle hunters in Mongolia, the Bushman of the Kalahari, and everyone in this country, regardless of which politicians or religions they identify with.

People of the Keys, politicians, commissioners, business leaders, snowbirds, and all of us working stiffs, let us lead the world. Let’s make sure the Keys, and everywhere else, are here for the next generations.

It’s not going to be convenient. It’s not going to be easy. But let’s go for it because it is a challenge. Nature is resilient. We have the power to change our planet’s destiny. We are strong.

We live on one of the most important barrier reefs in the world. People will listen. They will follow our lead. And all it will take is a conscious decision to put the environment first, above our other squabbles.

... why some mangroves are still hurting after Irma?

eesam Khoury works in the media department of the state Department of Environmental Protection Agency: While there are many unpredictable factors at play during a hurricane, wind and sediment have the most impact on mangroves.

Wind can strip the leaves off a tree, create a loss of moisture within the remaining tree, and damage the root system. Leaf loss reduces photosynthesis, the way a plant derives energy. Dehydration can also create a salt imbalance in the tree, and damaged roots reduce the water and nutrient uptake ability. When combined, these factors often result in tree decline.

Sediment can affect individual trees or a mangrove system by a direct increase or loss of sediments at the tree base, resulting in suffocation or stability/root loss. Sediment transport can also indirectly affect mangroves by changing the hydrology of the system. For instance, black mangrove systems are typically found in areas with high salinity and a very specific tidal regimen. They have pneumatophores (or snorkel roots) that stick up out of the mud to about an inch above the typical high water line, allowing the tree to get oxygen into its system. These systems are particularly susceptible to sediment transport that changes the hydrology by only a couple of inches. The build-up of small berms that often occur during these storms was the reason many black mangrove systems died in the Ten Thousand Islands after Hurricane Andrew.

The good news is that mangroves are adapted to tropical and subtropical areas of the world in which hurricanes and typhoons are a common element. Mangroves produce seeds in large quantities, sprouting easily and growing very quickly. In addition, the three species of mangroves in Florida favor specific elevations and tidal regimens. With a slight change in either from sediment transport, the new mangrove forest that develops may not be the same type of mangrove system that was there before. In rare cases the system may transition into an open water pond, but generally it very quickly becomes a thriving young forest again, supporting the basics for life in the Keys waters.

It is important to remember that this information is based on observation, as research has not been published yet on Hurricane Irma.

Our GLBTQ+ community, alongside allies, took to Duval Street for the culminating event: the big, beautiful parade on the evening of June 9. The Key West Business Guild, a historically gay Chamber of Commerce, organized the event, which wasn’t just good fun and great costumes. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a moment — responding to NYPD raids on the Greenwich Village gay bar — largely considered the powder keg sparking the GLBTQ+ rights movement.

UNDERWATER EXPLORATION NASA MISSION IN THE KEYS SIMULATES SPACE

J

ust 5.4 nautical miles offshore from Tavernier is a reef known as Conch Reef. Situated approximately 63 feet beneath the surface and surrounded by spur and groove coral formations is the world’s only undersea research laboratory, Florida International University’s Aquarius Reef Base.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) originally deployed Aquarius in Salt River Canyon off St. Croix, USVI in 1987. Thirteen missions were conducted in 1988-89 until Hurricane Hugo devastated the island on September 18, 1989. Aquarius was recovered in 1990 and underwent a three-year refurbishment in Wilmington, North Carolina. The undersea lab was redeployed on Conch Reef in 1993.

By providing extended access to one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, Aquarius serves as a unique platform to conduct cutting edge marine science research, facilitate innovative educational programming, and train specialized divers, such as astronauts. The habitat is a 43-by-10-foot diameter steel cylinder divided into three compartments: The wet porch, which provides direct access to the sea, and two pressure locks known

as the entry and main lock, which are 500- and 1,400-cubic-feet respectively.

Beginning June 13, Aquarius will serve as the home base for a fourwoman science crew and two male habitat technicians. This mission will simulate space exploration with a focus on objectives that prepare astronauts for missions to the International Space Station and, eventually, to the Moon and Mars. This mission, NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 23, is a continuation of NEEMO missions that have been conducted at Aquarius since 2001.

Since operations are not simulated, astronauts are immersed in a realistic analogue that often exceed what they experience through other forms of training.

Commanding the NEEMO 23 mission will be Samantha Cristoforetti, from the European Space Agency. She holds the record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight of a European astronaut. Cristoferretti was involved in Expeditions 42 and 43 where she spent 200 days living and working in the extreme environment of space.

The other female crewmembers include Jessica Watkins, a NASA astronaut candidate, Shirley Pomponi, a research professor at Florida Atlantic University who studies sponges and their potential in drug development, and Csilla Ari D’Agostino, assistant professor of neurosciences at the University of South Florida, who will study the psychological effects of living underwa-

ter for an extended period of time.

In addition to being tasked with space exploration objectives, aquanauts will engage in relevant marine science research. For the fourth consecutive year, NASA’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division has teamed with FIU’s Integrative Marine Genomics and Symbiosis (IMaGeS) Lab to better understand coral reef restoration efforts.

Using the extended bottom times afforded by Aquarius, aquanauts can get a lot of work done.

“Physiologically, there is no limit to how long people can spend in saturation while living underwater at Aquarius,” said Catherine Guinovart, Coordinator of Administrative Services for FIU’s Center for Coastal Oceans Research. “This mission will last nine days, but the longest we ever conducted lasted 31 days. The true gift of Aquarius is in the amount of bottom time the divers can have during these missions. Normally when people are diving from a boat at the surface, they can only be on the bottom for a short amount of time before they need to go back to the surface to avoid decompression sickness, but when people are saturated aboard Aquarius they can dive for up to nine hours a day in depths of up to 95 feet.

Riley Hatch, Ph.D. student in FIU’s IMaGeS lab and part of the surfacebased support team, says his team is interested in better understanding the effects that nearby fish communities,

and their associated nutrient contributions, have on the composition, function and health of coral symbioses with microbial and algal assemblages.

“After the conclusion of the fouryear study, the corals will be outplanted on surrounding reefs, thus enriching the genetic variation and increasing coral presence in this critical ecosystem,” Hatch said.

To aid in the study, the Coral Restoration Foundation will provide coral trees and boulder coral fragments on the Aquarius Reef Base. Prior to the mission start, the CRF team will give the astronauts land-based training on how to assemble, install, and attach coral fragments to the structures.

Once the mission begins, astronauts will prepare the study site by attaching boulder coral fragments to PVC trees, erected in a sand plain near Aquarius.

“These unique coral tree nurseries will provide coral restoration practitioners with vital data to help save coral reefs around the world. We are thrilled to be part of this extraordinary mission,” said Amelia Moura, Coral Restoration Foundation science program manager. “The environment at the Aquarius Reef Base is completely different from where we traditionally grow our corals. This makes it an exciting opportunity to further understand how different coral species and different genetic strains within certain species react to different environments, different fish communities, and different light conditions.”

Mr. Hernandez, because I enjoy band and am grateful for the experiences under his guidance.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? Dumbest has to be locking the doors of classrooms and best is being able to go off campus for lunch as an upperclassman.

What is something that you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? That to be involved in clubs was more than just doing it to get into colleges, but to help out the community in a positive way.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS? KWHS Band, Choir and Drama Club have all contributed to my social life as well as my love of music. KWHS Swim Team allows me to get in shape as well as enjoy a great sport and make connections; NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Beta, 2020 Executive Board and French Club all allow me to contribute to my community.

What are your plans after high school? I’m mostly undecided now, but I plan to go on to a four-year university and double major in architecture and music education.

What do you hope to be remembered for KWHS? All the great memories I have created through sports, clubs, and with my friends throughout high school.
