ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDE OVER $386,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

O

n May 28, the Upper Keys community handed out $386,000 in scholarships to more than 160 graduates at Coral Shores High School.

The Upper Keys Rotary Club donated more than $200,000 in scholarships this year to graduating seniors, current college students and those seeking career technical education. Scholarship funds ranged from $500 to $5,000, and included several scholarships administered by the Upper Keys club.

“All of that scholarship money comes from the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market held in the end of February.

We could not do it alone,” said Past President and Scholarship Committee Co-chair Frank Derfler. “We have over 400 volunteers from the community working the event. We have major help from the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative and from companies like CBT Construction, the Islander Resort, Caribee Boat Sales and Marina, Islamorada Beer Company, Hurricane Boat Lifts, Keys Deck and Dock Supplies, and many others.”

All scholarship recipients complete an extensive application, which is reviewed for merit, need and community service by the Scholarship Committee.

In addition, graduating seniors sit for a live interview.

The total scholarship amount awarded includes a donation of $40,000 to the Take Stock in Children program, which is matched by the notfor-profit Monroe County Education Foundation, as well as $40,000 to Key Largo Rotary for their work during the Nautical Flea Market to award additional scholarships. New this year, the club is awarding scholarships to those studying for certifications in industries such as diesel marine mechanics and firefighting.

Islamorada unscathed from session, per lobbyists

slamorada’s state lobbyists visited council during its May 30 meeting at Founders Park Community Center to recap happenings from legislative session in Tallahassee.

“We did have a quite a few wins, and some of them are on the defensive side,” lobbyist John Wayne Smith said. “There were a lot of things we worked on this year that involved a lot more eyes and ears and evaluation, and we worked on some things.

I want you to know we borrowed (Village Attorney) Roget (Bryan) many times to look at amendments and the impact of things.”

Overall, Wayne said a Senate budget was passed in exchange for House policy with bills that preserved home rule. Legislative approval of a budget met — if not exceeded — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ requests.

“That’s the easiest way to describe 2019,” Wayne Smith said.

Budget-wise, Wayne Smith said state Rep. Holly Raschein played a key role as chair of the environmental budget committee. The Keys Stewardship received $6 million, which Wayne Smith said was the second-highest individual budget request of any member.

“That was good for the local priorities of the Keys and Islamorada. She (Raschein) shepherded Gov. DeSantis’ budget initiatives in the environmental region. It constituted water quality and Everglades funding requests — the highest level of funding in those areas in a combined effort. It exceeded $650 million,” he said.

As for bills, lobbyist Joseph Salzverg stood last year in front of Islamorada council concerned

about an unprecedented attack on home rule. And even with a preemption storm, Salzverg said, he believed Islamorada and the Keys came out unscathed — and in a better position — than any other locality in the state.

Salzverg noted that a vacation rental bill that would provide a one-size-fitsall approach was dead upon arrival in the Senate.

“It definitely doesn’t work in Monroe County,” he said. “I can’t applaud (state Sen. Anitere) Flores and Raschein enough. Raschein explained that the Florida Keys is different, and we are. The vacation rental was defeated, but you can fully expect it to come back next year, and hopefully we’re sitting here next year with the same result.”

As for the 50-50 takings bill that gained no traction, Salzverg noted that having Raschein as bill sponsor in the House instead of another member, in this case state Rep. Thad Altman, might prove beneficial. Regarding a cap on wind insurance rates, Salzverg said, “we need to do more education” in Tallahassee.”

Wayne Smith, Salzverg and Mayor Deb Gillis acknowledged the village attorney’s work during state legislative session, as he was named a “Home Rule Hero” by the Florida League of Cities. Gillis said Bryan was diligent in fighting for local rights while Wayne Smith said his brain is incredible.

“His ability to look and see implications and long-term impacts of words on paper, it really, truly makes us smart,” Wayne Smith said. “He’s able to read those things and figure out immediately how this affects Islamorada.”

Wayne Smith he’d like to convene stakeholders to discuss the 50-50 takings bills, among other matters.

Committee meetings start in the fall as Wayne Smith said there’s already discussion about using the time to workshop concepts.

BRIEFLY Meeting to feature Rizzo, Senterfitt as speakers The Island of Key Largo Federation of Homeowner Associations will hold its general membership meeting at the Key Largo Library Room on June 12 at 7 p.m.

Guest speakers will be Jonathan Rizzo, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service out of Key West, and Marty Senterfitt, Monroe County director of emergency management. They will provide an educational presentation on why the weatherman worries and the unpredictability of rapid intensification of hurricanes in the Florida Keys.

Preservation Society sets June program The Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys’ June program will be a slideshow presentation entitled “Key Largo — The Way We Were,” given by society vice president Loralea Carrera. This iconic local watering hole has a rich history dating back to its construction by famed Miami Beach developer Carl Fisher in the late 1930s.

Be one with the force at Islamorada library Islamorada Library is celebrating the start of its 2019 summer reading program at the "Blast Off Into Summer Reading Party" on Saturday, June 8, at 1 p.m. There will be face-painting, games and refreshments, as well as an appearance by Darth Vader and his evil minions, who are actually members of a Star Wars costuming fan group. They are taking precious time off from conquering the universe to pose for selfies with all party guests. The gathering is free and geared toward children, though all ages are welcome.

Islamorada Library hosting search & rescue dog Lieutenant Elizabeth Lyne and her trained search and rescue dog, Piper, will be at Islamorada Library on Monday, June 10, at 1 p.m. Lyne works with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in the Keys and performs volunteer search and rescue missions with Piper, a 5-year-old German shepherd. At the presentation, the duo will be demonstrating what Piper does on these missions. This gathering is free and geared toward children, though all ages are welcome.

The presentation is part of the library’s 2019 “A Universe of Stories” summer reading program for kids.

National Marine Sanctuary sets advisory council meeting Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary will hold an advisory council meeting at the Hyatt Place in Marathon at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18. The meeting is open to the public.

Advisory council members will receive updates on marine life, habitats, and human use in the sanctuary along with ecological early warning tools.

There will be reports on socioeconomics, the Tourist Development Council’s sustainability campaign, and the Keys’ connection to Pulley Ridge, the deepest light-dependent coral reef in the United States.

Members will also discuss plans for the upcoming release of the Restoration Blueprint.

ERIC STEWART SMITH Eric Stewart Smith passed from this life at the age of 62 in a horrific tragedy on May 30, 2019. He is now with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Eric was an electrician, musician and sound engineer. He was actively involved in Samaritan's Purse, Operation Christmas Child, the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, and Cindy Claus (known as Eric the Elf).

He also served on the greeting committee at his home church FBCKL. Eric is survived by his adoring wife Cindy, his furry kids Zeke and Gabby, brother Robert, son Van, granddaughter Ayanna, and many loving friends and extended family.

STEPHEN ROSEN On May 30, Stephen Gerard Rosen of Key Largo passed away at the age of 50. He is survived by sisters Cindy and Debby, and daughters Emily and Amber.

avernier’s Driftwood Lodge opened in 1935. A story in the June 7, 1947 edition of the Florida Keys Weekly News stated, “Mr. and Mrs. Ray Maloney are now operating the Driftwood Hotel for the summer season. The dining room is now open, and sea foods and Key Lime pie are being served.

Mr. Adrian Rollini, the owner, will be down to meet the public on or about Nov. 1st.”

Adrian Rollini was born in New York City in 1903 and was by all accounts a child prodigy.

By the age of 2 he was taking piano lessons. At 4, he was giving 15-minute piano recitals at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

A contemporary of Benny Goodman, Rollini would become an internationally recognized jazz musician. He also loved to fish, which brought him to the Florida Keys.

The Driftwood Lodge once stood overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at the end of Sunrise Drive. The lodge fell into disrepair after Rollini was killed in 1956.

Visitors and locals needing a ride to restaurants, hotels or businesses on Upper Matecumbe Key will still have Freebee to choose. But the service may very well be extended to the rest of the islands in Islamorada.

The environmentally friendly shuttle service was on a six-month trial in the village, and it was set to end May 31. Village council decided during its May 30 meeting to extend the trial by two months. In addition, the council asked Jason Spiegel, Freebee co-founder and managing partner, to return during the June 27 meeting with a plan and numbers to service all of Islamorada.

“In the big picture, I heard nothing but good things how you operated, and no complaints about drivers,” Councilman Jim Mooney told Spiegel.

“I see the customer rating is good and their driver rating at 4.92. I know locals love it.”

Spiegel said the free on-demand, door-to-door transport system’s goals are being met in terms of reducing traffic congestion, cutting the carbon footprint, delivering customers to the footsteps of local businesses and slashing the drinking and driving. Residents who have yet to try the

“When the service began, we had a long-term vision,” Spiegel said. “Our commitment to the village is here for the long term.”

The village agreed to pay $80,000 during fiscal year 2018-19 for the original trial. The extension will cost $6,750, which is 50 percent of the originally contracted rate.

In terms of ridership, data from the past two months shows Islamorada, with its two shuttle cars, has a higher passenger per hour count, nine, than other new Freebee programs underway. The company’s pilot program in Fort Lauderdale shows eight passengers per hour, and in Pinecrest, data shows six per hour.

“We do feel really good about the amount of riders we’ve transported and the growth we’ve experienced during the first six months,” he said.

Freebee is available Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to midnight and Saturday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. As to the biggest feedback Freebee’s received, Spiegel said it’s coverage across all islands in Islamorada. He said a brand new, nine-passenger, 100-percent electric vehicle recently began operating in Miami that’s able to travel on all roads.

“This electric van would be the perfect vehicle to service all of Islamorada, and our strategy would be to run a combination between a fixed route and on demand,” he said. “Larger vans travel-

ing north and south on U.S. 1, passengers could request rides wherever they’re at. The vehicle would deviate off their route, pick them up at their location, get back onto the route and deviate off when they have to drop them off at their location.”

Councilman Ken Davis told Spiegel the service is cutting the carbon footprint just by how many people are not getting into a car. Davis asked what a hybrid vehicle would cost. Spiegel said there are not many out there besides mini buses.

“I think it could be a great compromise if it saved a lot of money,” Davis said. “A hybrid vehicle is still going to cut the carbon footprint by a third when you combine that with the number of riders we’re going to keep off road. I think it would be a cost-effective measure and something we might be able to work with.”

During the six-month trial period, 6.24 tons of emissions were prevented from being released into the atmosphere.

Mayhem on Indian Key Fill dates back to ’90s, still prevalent

emorial Day weekend came and went in the Keys. At Indian Key Fill, weekenders and day-trippers packed in to enjoy the water.

But like any major summer holiday, they came, they trashed and they left.

Issues surrounding Indian Key Fill, MM 79, aren’t new to locals, the village, law enforcement and the state, which owns the property. With the once-popular Card Sound hangout closed, the Fill has become an even more popular destination in the Upper Keys for weekenders to park their cars, launch their boats and hang out for the day.

But it’s also brought mayhem and messes, as evidenced by the photographs circulating online of the amount of garbage and filth, from plastic bags and beer cans to grills left behind — and feces.

“Every year, we talk about what we can do, what rights do we have, because it’s inside our village, but we don’t own the grounds,” Mayor Deb Gillis said during a May 30 meeting.

“It’s a very difficult thing.”

Village manager Seth Lawless has been working to round up officials from various state agencies with the goal to get some type of discussion and agreement on a plan to proceed at the Fill. Lawless told council during the meeting that the chaos that ensued during the holiday weekend kicked it to a new level, and it drew him to call FDOT’s District 6 secretary, James Wolfe, the following Tuesday.

In response to Lawless’ request, FDOT sent down Elizabeth Jett, FDOT representative, to listen.

“Jim (Wolfe) really wanted a repre-

sentative here to at least let you know that we do care,” Jett said. “I don’t have a whole lot to offer. I’m aware of the situation, and we’ll be sharing all the information. I’m hopeful we can address the problem. I think it’s going to take some good planning and ideas and willingness to work together.”

Councilman Mike Forster noted there were talks and meetings with state officials in 2012 regarding the Fill. A plan came out in 2014 outlining a boat ramp designed by Fish and Wildlife Commission, boat trailer and car parking, restroom facility and fishing areas, among other things. There were also discussions in 2016 between village and state officials over improvements.

“It’s not like we have to recreate the wheel,” Forster said. “We had all governmental agencies at this table here and we came up with a plan.

Then the FWC appropriations went away on the ramp and FDOT went away as well. We’re back to square zero again.”

Jett said they’ll need to revisit the plan since the footprint is different now due to erosion. Jett, who wasn’t involved with the plan in 2014, said it’s “a shame that the plan didn’t come to fruition.”

“I’m very hopeful we’ll get there again,” she said. “It’s just going to take diligence and persistence.”

Councilman Jim Mooney said the Fill was an issue in 1998, and “FDOT has literally turned their back on us.”

“The council sees it every day. We understand. We’re part of it too and see it too,” he said. “We’re running into brick walls like everybody and it’s very frustrating.”

Councilwoman Cheryl Meads said

the South Florida Water Management District governing board is now discussing the issue, following photographs seen on Facebook of the trash. Meads is an at-large member on the board.

“Government agencies are talking about what to do about it,” she said. “I believe a solution is on the way.”

Two residents took to the podium during the meeting to voice their concern and frustration. Village resident Scott Vaughn said he ended up writing to Wolfe following the mayhem at the Fill. Vaughn said he scoops up plastic with a net every time he’s out on the water.

“Each passing year, I see the degradation that’s happening on our waterways,” he said. “The clarity’s gone down, the amount of trash has gone up, fish kills and dead zones in the bay. I’m hoping the council is having further communications with DOT just to see what we can do to monetize.”

Resident Sue Miller said her heart is troubled with the situation.

“I always thought the drive from Upper to the Lower Matecumbe was the prettiest place in the Florida Keys,” she said. “Now when I drive there, I have tears in my eyes with bags of trash hanging from the mangroves.”

Councilman Ken Davis said the village is incurring the cost of trash pickup at the Fill. He asked why FDOT can’t reimburse the village for those costs of “cleaning up the DOT’s mess.” Jett said in response that she couldn’t answer that question, but that it would be brought to the department and the people who make the decisions.

Concerns are also coming from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Rick Ramsay, who’s requesting FDOT to meet at the Islamorada substation and to conduct a comprehensive traffic study of the area. Last year, Ramsay requested FDOT lower the speed limit given the number of crashes from speeding, passing, distracted driving and traffic stopping on U.S. 1 for motorists making left turns.

Last year, Ramsay requested a speed reduction between MM 80 and 77 from 55 mph to 45 mph and decreased passing zones. FDOT decided to reduce the speed limit to 50 mph and decrease some passing zones. Unfortunately, serious crashes continue in the area.

hirteen seniors from Coral Shores High School became Take Stock in Children graduating scholars on May 25. The Take Stock in Children Class of 2019 represents a diverse group of 51 students from Coral Shores, Marathon and Key West high schools who are ready to take the next step in their educational career.

With over 120 advanced placement courses and nearly 40 dual enrollment courses behind them, the 51 TSIC scholars have collectively earned a 3.64 weighted grade point average. Sixteen will receive Florida Bright Futures scholarships in addition to their Take Stock in Children scholarship and other local scholarships. In total, the TSIC Class of 2019 has earned over $2 million in scholarships.

“We couldn’t be more proud of this group of scholars,” said Monroe County Education Foundation President Bryan Green.

“The foundation enthusiastically congratulates these 51 students and wishes them much success in their pursuit of a college degree or career certification.”

Keynote speaker Johnny Louis, TSIC 2011 graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Florida International University in 2017, provided an inspirational message and shared his triumphs as well as challenges while pursuing his degree.

“Don’t limit yourself to what you can or can’t do with your college career,” Louis advised the seniors. “In fact, aim high and perform above those expectations. You will only be doing yourself a favor in the end.”

CROSSING FOR A CURE Tavernier man ready for paddle

L

ast year, Tavernier resident Chris Bell’s mind was set on a paddle challenge that takes participants 80 miles across the Gulf Stream from Bimini, Bahamas, back to the Florida mainland.

Fast-forward to June 3, 2019, Bell is resting up for the week following months of preparation and some hard training sessions that ensued in April.

On Saturday, June 15, Bell will be one of 200 taking part in The Crossing For A Cure long-distance endurance paddle challenge, which was inspired because of the health benefits of the ocean for those living with cystic fibrosis, a terminal lung disease. The challenge, which began four years ago with four participants, has grown immensely from its inception. The race will feature a mixture of paddleboarders, including Bell, and out-rigger canoes.

“It’s hectic. It’s getting close,” Bell told the Weekly during a recent interview. “I feel good and I’m ready to go.”

Bell loves paddling and has quite a bit of experience, but says he hasn’t done much long-distance paddling — especially of this magnitude. He ended up reaching out to well-known paddler Scott Baste, of Paddle the Florida Keys, last September for some training.

“I had already looked at doing the crossing,” Bell said. “He (Scott) put a lot of time into me. I’ve done multiple trips paddling basically around Islamorada from Tavernier Creek to Whale Harbor. I’ve done that loop twice in a day before.”

Training with Baste, Bell says he also went through some hard workout sessions with Fernando at Froggies Gym in Tavernier. Bell, who’s normally an early riser, wakes up during the week at 4:30 a.m., heads to the gym for training, goes to work in Miami and comes home to eat and rest. Paddle days are Saturdays and Sundays.

“I told myself, ‘If you want to do it, you’re going to have to dial in,’” he said.

“September, I became really focused.”

Bell is now working to get the logistics of his journey together, from food and gear to preparing for the unknowns. Bell will have a boat with a captain and two crew members following him.

‘They are pivotal,” he said. “They’ll give me food and water.”

Bell says the biggest thing throughout the whole endeavor is bringing awareness to cystic fibrosis. He credited the work of Redbone and Susan Ellis for bringing awareness in the Keys of what it does to children.

“My hat’s off to them, and I support them any way I can,” he said. “I would challenge anyone to get involved with it.”

Bell said he’s also amazed at the level of support from family, friends with boats who dropped him at the reef to paddle back and the Keys community as a whole — even those he sees on the water who don’t know what he’s doing.

“There would be times paddling around the island, boaters would see me with my backpack and wonder what I’m doing. They’d pull up beside me and ask what I’m doing. Once you start telling them what you’re doing, boats start talking and cruising with you.”

Overall, Bell said, he’s amped up and ready to go. He said he will be spending a lot of time with family and friends this week before the big paddle June 15.

“I’m going to see friends and give some love back, because they’ve been so loving to me,” he said. “That’s been the coolest thing. I’ve trained so hard and worked so hard, but the amount of support has been amazing.”

Ceremony honors military sacrifices The spirited Memorial Day service at the Upper Keys Government Center was incredibly beautiful.

Over the course of my life I've never been exposed to such dignified splendor honoring the sacrifices made by members of our Armed Forces killed in action.

The grandeur and majesty of the Key Largo Community Concert Band was on full display throughout this commemorative service.

Each musician performed brilliantly with creative splendor and joy. They provided synchronized charm and elegance for the ears of those assembled in our filled auditorium. The extraordinary rendition of our national anthem, superbly intonated by Alana Robles, captivated and charmed everyone in attendance.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay and County Commissioner Michelle Coldiron continued to demonstrate their steadfast and uncompromising support of our men and women in uniform. Their uplifting presence energized and invigorated our ceremony.

State Attorney and U.S. Marine Commander of VFW Post 10211 Dennis Ward, Monroe County Veterans Service Director Cathy Crane and U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Mark Birk, our VFW Adjutant; diligently coordinated and created a truly formidable and breathtaking experience for our community.

U.S. Marine Major and Quartermaster of VFW Post 10211 Jason Kendall led the charge in rebuilding and preserving our Upper Keys VFW post. Without his relentless and dedicated commitment to save that VFW post it would have ceased to be. We would not be in existence nor partnering as a sponsor of this spectacular event.

Gregory Bianchini's magnanimous gesture on behalf of the Sons and Daughters of Italy and the Key Largo Civic Club will be forever remembered. The gorgeous floral wreaths donated by these distinguished organizations lent excellence, nobility and remembrance to our fallen warriors.

Crane's video identifying the enormous risks and sacrifices made by those in combat was a compelling presentation. It further documented and lent credence to the need of never forgetting what our warriors are called upon to do when they go into battle. They are

willing to "give all" so that we may enjoy the many rights and liberties afforded us under our Constitution.

A focal point of the memorial service was reading letters and essays written by and about those members of our Armed Forces who were killed in action.

The combat Marines who rose to speak on behalf of those making this ultimate sacrifice eloquently articulated in depth the details under which these courageous warriors lost their lives. They verbalized their personal accounts of the tragic deaths endured by their comrades with class, poise and distinction.

Upon the conclusion of our Memorial Day service a large group assembled across the highway at our VFW Post 10211 and Arthurs Island Kitchen to process through the ceremony.

Chef Arthur provided everyone with sumptuous delicacies, free of charge, as we began to unwind.

Crane did a magnificent job in organizing and putting this event together. I expected an absolute outstanding performance from the United States Marines of Upper Keys VFW Post 10211.

This Memorial Day ceremony provided momentary relief from the political divisiveness, anger and hatred being spewed 24/7 across our airwaves. Putting into perspective and refocusing upon the blood sacrifices and lives lost required to birth and build our nation has the potential to decrease the venomous stings of harsh words, actions and judgments.

As imperfect as we all are, the loathsome view taken of another is really a reflection of one's own shortcomings and defects of character. We cannot survive the never-ending volley of attacks and assaults being launched against one another. Let's not diminish and ignorantly squander the sacrifices that created and brought us together.

GLOBAL DAY ENCOURAGES BETTER FUTURE FOR BLUE BODIES

O

n Saturday, June 8, people around the world will celebrate the blue bodies of water — our oceans.

Known as World Oceans Day, the event is intended to inspire action yearround to preserve and restore the valuable resource.

On World Oceans Day, family, friends, communities and the planet are encouraged to mobilize in some fashion to honor and protect the ocean. The Ocean Project, an organization dedicated to supporting partners to advance solutions for the oceans, is leading the global promotion and coordination of World Oceans Day. Since the early 2000s, the group has worked with hundreds of organizations around the world to enhance engagement and action each year.

Locally, organizations and groups will mobilize through various activities and events.

“Whether you conduct a fish survey while diving or snorkeling, order invasive lionfish at a local restaurant, or simply talk with others about the threats to our ocean, everyone can play a role in protecting marine life and habitats, on World Oceans Day and every day,” said Amy Lee, communications manager with REEF, which will be participating in World Oceans Day at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, as well as CRF’s Coralpalooza.

JOHN PENNEKAMP CORAL REEF STATE PARK CELEBRATES John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and its partners will celebrate World Oceans Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. Activities will include a One Bucket Challenge cleanup, crafts, nature walks, auditorium programs, documentaries and more.

The event is free with the park entrance fee. Representatives from several organizations will discuss the issues affecting our oceans and how you can make a difference. The theme of this year’s World Oceans Day celebration is “Together We Can Protect and Restore our Oceans,” with a focus on plastic pollution. One of the highlights will be the premiere showing of the “Changing Seas” episode “Corals in Crisis” at 1 p.m. in the Visitor Center and Aquarium. The episode focuses on the stony coral tissue loss disease affecting the Florida Reef Tract and how scientists are working to save the corals.

There will be a question-and-answer session with scientists following the screening.

CORAL RESTORATION FOUNDATION’S CORALPALOOZA 2019 Join an army of ocean lovers in Florida and the Caribbean to help save and restore coral reefs. Coral Restoration Foundation’s Coralpalooza 2019 is June 7-8. Those registering will dive or snorkel on the Florida Reef Tract and visit the Coral Tree Nursery. Divers will have the chance to outplant corals with the coral crew, helping to save the ecosystem. There will also be fun for the whole family on June 8 beginning at 10 a.m. at the CRF Exploration Center at 5 Seagate Bouleveard in Key Largo, where Captain Coral will launch an adventure into marine conservation. NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY, FLORIDA BAY OUTFITTERS CLEANUP EVENT Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) is partnering with Florida Bay Outfitters to lead a cleanup via kayaks on June 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (weather permitting). Please arrive on time to fill out necessary paperwork. In order to volunteer with FKNMS you must be at least 15 years old. All minors who plan to participate in this event must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you have your own kayak please bring it. Make sure you have a life jacket. If you do not have a kayak you can reserve one from Florida Bay Outfitters, free of charge, for your participation in this marine debris cleanup. Please call them at 305- 451-3018 and let them know that you will be reserving a kayak for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Cleanup on June 8. You will need to reserve the kayak at least 48 hours in advance. Space is limited. On the day of the event you will be required to sign a waiver from Florida Bay Outfitters to use the kayak. Florida Bay Outfitters will drop off and pick up the kayaks at our meeting point. Meet at Garden Cove Drive in Key Largo.

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION WORLD OCEANS DAY CLEANUP Surfrider Foundation has partnered with Love Beauty and Planet, Love Home and Planet to organize 27 beach cleanups across the country on World Oceans Day on June 8. There will be two options in the Keys. The Upper Keys cleanup group will meet fom 9-11 a.m. at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier to remove trash from mangroves via foot and via paddleboards, while the Lower Keys cleanup group will meet at Boca Chica Beach.

These two events are singleuse plastic free, which means participants must bring their own reusable water bottles! There will be refill options at both locations to keep hydrated. More information is at Surfrider Florida Keys’ social media pages.

f you need a little home cooking, stop in for some tasty shrimp fritters, shrimp entrees and some delicious meals at the Shrimp Shack, MM 81, oceanside.

The family-owned Islamorada business opened its doors in December 2011. From the beginning, the shack has served homemade food to its customers. Today, it’s a staple for locals and a mandatory stop for visitors making their way through Upper Matecumbe Key in Islamorada.

The Shrimp Shack, open for lunch and dinner, is run by the mother-daughter team of Jill and Morgan Jahn, who are whipping up homemade family recipes out of the kitchen and onto the plate for patrons to eat and enjoy.

The restaurant has garnered quite the attention from the likes of Guy Fieri and his “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” show. While shrimp dishes are the specialty at the spot, Fieri found out there was more to be had when visiting the Shrimp Shack.

MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF It’s hard to believe, but hurricane season is upon us yet again.

It seems strange saying that as many residents are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. I’ve talked a lot about how impressed I was to see neighbors helping neighbors and this community come together in the face of such adversity, but that storm also taught us a lot about preparation.

I know many of you have endured many hurricane seasons, but I want to share a few quick tips myself about preparation now that the 2019 storm season is upon us: • Review your insurance policies and coverage.

• Organize all your important documents and have them ready to travel.

• Determine your evacuation destination beforehand.

• Look at a map before you pick that destination. Remember, bridges and low-lying areas on the mainland may be unsafe for travel during a storm.

• Buy a traditional road map for your car. Be prepared for your GPS to fail.

• Buy a can of tire sealer for your car.

Lastly, pick up an Official Hurricane Survival Guide from your County Commissioner’s office. Read it! Prepare your home and evacuation kits now.

Let’s all knock on wood in the hopes that Mother Nature will forget about the Florida Keys this storm season. Please, be safe and have a personal hurricane plan!

Recently an ice shelf collapsed in the Antarctic, and the second largest colony of emperor penguins, thousands of chicks and all, vanished. What is the relevance to us, 7,000 miles away in the subtropics? Well, something. A rather important something.

I

n May, we learned that the web of life that holds our planet’s ecosystems intact, and allows us to farm and fish, is on the verge of failure. The reasons: humans have plowed and paved over three quarters of the land, disrupted two-thirds of the oceans, overfished, and over-poached. On this course, during the next decade, orangutans, tigers, and elephants are expected to become extinct in the wild. A decade or two after that, every one in eight species. That comes out to somewhere around a million kinds of plants and animals, gone. It is on track to be the sixth great planetary extinction.

We are fine. We are Keys strong.

We were leveled by one of the largest hurricanes in history not too long ago, and proved we can survive anything. Here, on this little strip of land, where we are told that the sea is rising all around, many of us are indifferent to climate change.

Our lives are busy, our wallets thin, and these problems are nebulous.

We hear an armageddon soundbite on the news, a neighbor’s viewpoint, a polarizing talking head. We form an opinion, then move on to other things. Our disconnect with these issues is that they are complex, overwhelming, and seemingly far away.

Unfortunately, understanding the urgency of what is taking place, and the science behind it,

Because the problems are here.

Somewhere upwards of 80 percent of the Keys’ coral has died in the last four decades. Before Irma, we had 6 percent left overall. During that same time, 80 percent of Caribbean reefs have disappeared. There are numerous and complex causes for this, but the science suggests that most of them are human driven. Elsewhere in the seas, green slime is all that remains of life. At least one third of the Great Barrier Reef has bleached and died since 2016. There are 400 ocean “dead zones,” and growing. Insects have all but vanished in some tropical forests.

This is for real.

Those who’ve been diving or fishing here for 30 years likely remember the clearer water, the larger and more abundant fish, and the vibrancy of corals on the reefs. Or, maybe we don’t.

When it comes to nature, people have generational amnesia, or what scientists call shifting baselines. We see a landscape as pristine, because we don’t have a reference for what it was before we experienced it. We also develop what’s been termed “personal amnesia,” where we don’t often notice the gradual decline in abundance of animals and plants through our own lifetimes. But if John James Audubon were to see the Florida Bay today, two centuries later, he would surely note that the ecosystems here have all but crumbled.

(For those keeping score, there are now three cataclysmic pressures on nature: biodiversity collapse, poisoned land and water, and the ever-polarizing climate change. They are all in many ways intertwined, especially in the Keys.)

Ninety percent of shallow-water coral reefs will likely die by 2050, because with business as usual, annual coral bleaching is predicted to be the norm by then. Most corals cannot survive that level of stress.

Another problem we face today is the escalating rate of change. What took 100 years to break, is now taking more like 10 or 20. If we have lost three-quarters of the reef in 40 years, and the rate of loss is increasing, then what will we have left in 20 years, or 10? Our minds are not used to adjusting for an exponentially increasing rate of change. We think what happened in the first half of our lives will be about how it goes down in the second. Science tells us that is simply not the case.

This is for real.

Living in a developed nation, we will be the last to feel the dire effects of these pressures on nature. It’s hard to grasp a melting Greenland, a drying Madagascar, or a valley in China where workers, not bees, pollinate the trees.

They are already in the throes of it. By the time we are encapsulated by it, by the time we are truly inconvenienced by contaminated water or in imminent danger of starvation, the situation will be far beyond fixable.

So why are dead emperor penguins important to the Keys? They are our wake-up call. They are our battle cry. The people of the Keys can have all the compassion in the world, for the people of the world, but it means nothing without action.

Starting now, we accept that this is for real.

Our One Human Family doesn’t just extend from mile markers 0 to 107. It includes the Inuit in the Arctic, the eagle hunters in Mongolia, the Bushman of the Kalahari, and everyone in this country, regardless of which politicians or religions they identify with.

People of the Keys, politicians, commissioners, business leaders, snowbirds, and all of us working stiffs, let us lead the world. Let’s make sure the Keys, and everywhere else, are here for the next generations.

It’s not going to be convenient. It’s not going to be easy. But let’s go for it because it is a challenge. Nature is resilient. We have the power to change our planet’s destiny. We are strong.

We live on one of the most important barrier reefs in the world. People will listen. They will follow our lead. And all it will take is a conscious decision to put the environment first, above our other squabbles.

“THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK” BY KIM MICHELE RICHARDSON Cussy Mary Carter is the last of the blueskinned people of Kentucky. It’s 1936, and with few options, Cussy has been lucky enough to get a job as a Pack Horse Librarian, a government initiative to distribute reading materials.

As one of the few literate folks in this isolated mountain area, Cussy is determined to bring hope and comfort to the often forgotten people. While the men risk their lives daily at the local coal mine, these impoverished hungry women and children work their fingers to the bone, barely scraping by. This novel is both heartbreaking and beautifully written, historically defining education and socioeconomic struggles that continue today. The profound joy and promise that books brought to these simple, good people is priceless.

LIONFISH PROJECT Three fifth-graders from Frank C. Martin International K-8 Center in Miami recently educated their community about the harmful impacts of invasive lionfish and raised funds to support marine conservation. The students began researching the lionfish invasion for a school assignment. They designed and handed out flyers at their local Publix, asked for donations to support local lionfish removals, and even created an educational website to highlight their work. Recently, the boys and their parents visited REEF Headquarters in Key Largo to deliver $135 that they raised to support marine conservation.

usic fests in May drew quite the crowds in the Upper Keys. Over 30 singer/songwriters played original music for adoring fans at the Key Largo Original Music Festival, held May 16-19. The talented musicians, who hailed from Nashville, North Carolina, Maryland, Texas, Florida, and our hometown Keys, performed at five different venues over four days.

On May 26, Afro Roots Fest concert series was held at the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District in Islamorada.

That’s why we’re offering a lung screening program to patients at high risk for developing lung cancer – the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women in the U.S. Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT) has resulted in a decrease in lung cancer mortality by 20% when screening high-risk patients, compared with a standard chest X-ray*. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

You’re a candidate for this lung screening if you meet the following criteria: • Age 55-80 (or 55-77 for Medicare Part B patients**) • Asymptomatic • Current or recent smoker (within the last 15 years)

• Prescription from a physician or qualified non-physician practitioner
