n June 4, the Trump administration announced new travel restrictions to Cuba, essentially a follow-through on promises President Trump made two years ago.

The new rules do several things: • Stop U.S.-owned private and corporate aircraft and boats from traveling to Cuba. Stop U.S. cruise ships from making port in Cuba. Commercial flights to Cuba will still be allowed.

• Ending the people-to-people category of visas.

According to a statement by the federal Department of Treasury, “These policies continue to work to channel economic activities away from the Cuban military, intelligence, and security services.”

The rules took effect on June 5.

However, those who have already paid for travel will be allowed to complete their trips, according to officials in Washington, D.C. Robin Smith-Martin, who began his upscale concierge service (OKW or Our Key West) over two years ago, offers trips to Cuba for tourists and local residents in the Keys. OKW provides day trips to Havana that allow visitors to spend the day in Havana with the ability to return to Key West “in time for your dinner reservation.”

Smith-Martin said things continue as normal … for now.

“All booked Havana Day Trip flights are continuing as scheduled,” he said.

“OKW is monitoring the situation and working with our industry partners to communicate our displeasure with the Trump administration’s ineptitude in opening markets to seed democratic participation in closed societies. We expect a positive outcome from current negotiations surrounding Venezuela will lead to genuine rapprochement with the Republic of Cuba.”

The Cuban travel sanctions have much to do with unrest in the western hemisphere. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said, “Cuba continues to play a destabilizing role in the Western Hemisphere, providing a communist foothold in the region and propping up U.S. adversaries in places like Venezuela and Nicaragua by fomenting instability, undermining the rule of law, and suppressing democratic processes.”

The State Department added this: “Veiled tourism has served to line the pockets of the Cuban military, the very same people supporting Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and repressing the Cuban people on the island.”

Doug Bradshaw, the City of Key West Port and Marina services director, said the city has yet to hear from cruise lines on how they are going to revise their itineraries. This month, about two dozen cruise ships will make port in Key West, and about half of those have listed Cuba as one of the stops on the itinerary.

Monroe County Director of Airports Richard Strickland said one or two private charter flights leave Key West every day. Brian Slaga, of the former Duck Key Charters, no longer runs private flights to Cuba, although he did so for two years out of the Marathon airport. He said he feels for the honest Cuban nationals who depended on tourism dollars to survive.

“Ingrid, our English-speaking tour guide, will suffer. She had a choice between making $30 a month working for the government, or working as a tour guide and earning $50 in tips a day. And the people who run the casa particulares, or bed and breakfasts,” Slaga said, “those are the people that will suffer.”

Jim Parker of Caribbean Flying Adventures on the mainland has traveled to Cuba in his own plane 25 times during the last three and a half years, the same time frame it’s been legal to do so. He said he’s also arranged 450 landing permits for pilots with private planes to do the same.

“I don’t think people realize that there’s 2 million Cubans who now work in the private sector in Cuba,” Parker said. “This is going to deny maybe 500,000 or 1 million people a livelihood.”

Of course, tourism in Cuba has another side. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) estimates there are almost 90,000 prostitutes in Cuba. It’s a legal profession in Cuba.

And despite the headlines, it’s still legal for Americans to travel to Cuba.

Parker said this week’s news further confuses the public.

“Take a commercial flight — Delta, American, Jet Blue. Get one of the other 11 categories of visas. Book a tour guide, stay in a private hotel. It’s a way to support the Cuban people,” he said, while also acknowledging that some of the bigger resorts are government-owned.

n Saturday, June 8, the Coldwell Banker Schmitt Charitable Foundation will host its 7th annual Bicycle Ride and Roll Dice Run for Charity.

The event combines biking, prizes, costumes and food. Registration opens at 1:30 p.m. at Sparky’s Landing, and the ride begins at 3 p.m., hitting other local hot spots. The ride will finish at Cabana Club with a pool party, free food and an awards ceremony.

Registration to ride is $30. Don’t have a bike? That’s cool. Wheels-2Go will have a limited number of bikes on site.

Riders will travel from Sparky’s (located behind Holiday Inn Express in Marathon) with a police escort and will enjoy a few local stops on their way to Cabana Club. These include Causeway Pizza, Batter up! Cupcakery, and Key Colony Inn. At 5 p.m. an awards ceremony begins, and prizes will be given out for the lowest roll, best decorated bike, and best costumes. The grand prize, a brand-new bicycle provided by Wheels-To-Go, will also be awarded to one lucky participant.

Two of the stops, Batter Up! Cupcakery and Causeway Pizza, are fairly new additions to the Keys. The owner of the cupcakery, Simone Stanton, has a passion for cake decorating and says that when bike riders arrive at her shop, she will have “a variety of treats and merchandise to purchase.” The addition of these

Since 2002, the Coldwell Foundation has assisted more than 1,000 individuals and local organizations. All of the money raised through the Bicycle Ride and Roll Dice Run will be used to continue this mission to help residents of the Keys.

“The money raised will stay in Monroe County for families,” says Halley Haack, the foundation’s chair.

Some examples of the work done by the Coldwell Foundation include helping single mothers, providing the resources for a 3-year-old blind girl to learn Braille, and aiding the victims of car accidents. Each year, the foundation hosts multiple fundraisers in order to further its goals — Dancing Through the Decades, Bingo at Boondocks, and of course, the Bicycle Ride and Roll Run for Charity.

Haack said she has been impressed by the participation of locals in the past — “Thank you for the community support!” — and looks forward to seeing community members Saturday.

Penguins, elephants and conchs … what global environmental flux means to us KARUNA EBERL

Recently an ice shelf collapsed in the Antarctic, and the second largest colony of emperor penguins, thousands of chicks and all, vanished. What is the relevance to us, 7,000 miles away in the subtropics? Well, something. A rather important something.

I

n May, we learned that the web of life that holds our planet’s ecosystems intact, and allows us to farm and fish, is on the verge of failure. The reasons: humans have plowed and paved over three quarters of the land, disrupted two-thirds of the oceans, overfished, and over-poached. On this course, during the next decade, orangutans, tigers, and elephants are expected to become extinct in the wild. A decade or two after that, every one in eight species. That comes out to somewhere around a million kinds of plants and animals, gone. It is on track to be the sixth great planetary extinction.

We are fine. We are Keys strong.

We were leveled by one of the largest hurricanes in history not too long ago, and proved we can survive anything. Here, on this little strip of land, where we are told that the sea is rising all around, many of us are indifferent to climate change.

Our lives are busy, our wallets thin, and these problems are nebulous.

We hear an armageddon soundbite on the news, a neighbor’s viewpoint, a polarizing talking head.

We form an opinion, then move on to other things. Our disconnect with these issues is that they are complex, overwhelming, and seemingly far away. Unfortunately, understanding the urgency of what is taking place, and the science behind it, requires considerable effort.

Why spend the time to learn about problems we don’t see here?

Because the problems are here.

Somewhere upwards of 80 percent of the Keys’ coral has died in the last four decades. Before Irma, we had 6 percent left overall. During that same time, 80 percent of Caribbean reefs have disappeared. There are numerous and complex causes for this, but the science suggests that most of them are human driven. Elsewhere in the seas, green slime is all that remains of life. At least one third of the Great Barrier Reef has bleached and died since 2016. There are 400 ocean “dead zones,” and growing. Insects have all but vanished in some tropical forests.

This is for real.

Those who’ve been diving or fishing here for 30 years likely remember the clearer water, the larger and more abundant fish, and the vibrancy of corals on the reefs. Or, maybe we don’t.

When it comes to nature, people have generational amnesia, or what scientists call shifting baselines. We see a landscape as pristine, because we don’t have a reference for what it was before we experienced it. We also develop what’s been termed “personal amnesia,” where we don’t often notice the gradual decline in abundance of animals and plants through our own lifetimes. But if John James Audubon were to see the Florida Bay today, two centuries later, he would surely note that the ecosystems here have all but crumbled.

nature: biodiversity collapse, poisoned land and water, and the ever-polarizing climate change. They are all in many ways intertwined, especially in the Keys.)

Ninety percent of shallow-water coral reefs will likely die by 2050, because with business as usual, annual coral bleaching is predicted to be the norm by then. Most corals cannot survive that level of stress.

Another problem we face today is the escalating rate of change. What took 100 years to break, is now taking more like 10 or 20. If we have lost three-quarters of the reef in 40 years, and the rate of loss is increasing, then what will we have left in 20 years, or 10? Our minds are not used to adjusting for an exponentially increasing rate of change. We think what happened in the first half of our lives will be about how it goes down in the second. Science tells us that is simply not the case.

This is for real.

Living in a developed nation, we will be the last to feel the dire effects of these pressures on nature. It’s hard to grasp a melting Greenland, a drying Madagascar, or a valley in China where workers, not bees, pollinate the trees.

They are already in the throes of it. By the time we are encapsulated by it, by the time we are truly inconvenienced by contaminated water or in imminent danger of starvation, the situation will be far beyond fixable.

So why are dead emperor penguins important to the Keys? They are our wake-up call. They are our battle cry. The people of the Keys can have all the compassion in the world, for the people of the world, but it means nothing without action.

Starting now, we accept that this is for real.

Our One Human Family doesn’t just extend from mile markers 0 to 107. It includes the Inuit in the Arctic, the eagle hunters in Mongolia, the Bushman of the Kalahari, and everyone in this country, regardless of which politicians or religions they identify with.

People of the Keys, politicians, commissioners, business leaders, snowbirds, and all of us working stiffs, let us lead the world. Let’s make sure the Keys, and everywhere else, are here for the next generations.

It’s not going to be convenient. It’s not going to be easy. But let’s go for it because it is a challenge. Nature is resilient. We have the power to change our planet’s destiny. We are strong.

We live on one of the most important barrier reefs in the world. People will listen. They will follow our lead. And all it will take is a conscious decision to put the environment first, above our other squabbles.

BUSINESS SURVEY RESULTS: The results of Monroe County’s Unmet Needs Survey were unveiled on June 3 at a long-term recovery meeting in Marathon. During May, county staff sought voluntary responses from businesses in Monroe County at the behest of the state Department of Economic Opportunity, intended to guide future recovery. The county collected 85 responses from businesses located along the island chain, from Key West to the Upper Keys. (The county estimates about 4,500 “employment establishments” in the same area, although there are many more occupational licenses for self-employed businessmen and women.) Here are some of the key findings: • Business owners said “overwhelmingly” that lack of skilled workers and workforce housing is the major issue they face. However, respondents also said they had either more or the same number of employees as they did prior to Hurricane Irma.

• 46% of business owners report still having physical damage.

• 54% of businesses said they were uninsured or under-insured.

• 47% of businesses reported they were currently stable; 22% said they were in decline.

roll-out of new post-hurricane business recovery programs can best be named Rebuild Florida, phase 2. On June 3, Monroe County brought together stakeholders to learn about help available to Keys business owners from federal and state funds, and to brainstorm ideas that would make the Keys economy more resilient the next time a storm hits the Keys.

Those in attendance expressed some skepticism about the new program, given the results so far of the initial phase of Rebuild Florida. (See sidebar on opposite page.)

The audience received updates on four different programs available during the second phase. The Florida Wildlife Commission’s C.J. Sweetman told the audience about $44.6 million that will be available for marine fisheries assistance. The state Department of Economic Opportunity’s Reginald Dixon explained updates on the $60 million business recovery grant program, $20 million workforce training program, and the $85 million infrastructure repair and mitigation activities.

There is a third pot of money, phase 3, coming: $791 million available in Florida for infrastructure and mitigation purposes. Most agree that municipalities are the natural fit for the final program.

The phase 2 funds are not available yet. Dixon guessed it would be October before the grant documentation is finalized, application period opened, and applicants reviewed.

Are program funds necessary two years after a natural disaster?

The businesses that needed help have already gone out of business and are no longer eligible. That leaves businesses that have already demonstrated their ability to survive; what is owed to them?

Both Dixon and Monroe County’s Christine Hurley addressed the issue.

Dixon said the grants focus on long-term recovery and resiliency after all other assistance has been exhausted, including private insurance and other forms of federal assistance.

“When we were entering Hurricane Recovery after Hurricane Irma, everyone thought everything had to get done immediately,” said Hurley, assistant county administrator over the building, planning and code departments. “But there is a different philosophical view, and that is that people have to be responsible for their own well being, before they spend public money.”

One of the ways the Business Recovery Grant Program can be used is to pay for lost equipment and inventory. Daniel Samess, of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce, said that a theoretical business owner who had to replace an expensive generator after the storm could provide a receipt and request BRGP funds.

Dixon said he’s investigating what portion of the Florida Keys Community College’s apprenticeship program — to train new skilled workers in construction, plumbing and electrical — would qualify for the Workforce Recovery Training Program. The Marine Fisheries Disaster Supplemental Assistance presumably could be used to pay for lost traps, and possibly lost income.

Later in the day, the workshop participants broke into small groups. Quickly, the conversation turned to ways to modify the current programs, or prepare for the future.

Helene Wetherington, the workshop organizer and Monroe County Disaster Recovery director, said the group had several ideas: increasing the amount of financial assistance per business above $50,000; in addition to funds to replace lost equipment and inventory, adding the ability to make structural repairs; and more work on the loan program to come up with more favorable terms for Keys businesses.

"Participating in the activities that took place in this room today was an eye-opening experience," said Wetherington. "Almost two years after Hurricane Irma, our businesses still lack financial resources, and we need to continue to make funding for Monroe County businesses a priority."

“There is one silver lining to this,” said Julie Dennis, a disaster consultant. “Every time Congress gives funding for a disaster, there are brand-new rules. It’s not efficient. This is a chance to get ahead and come up with something more streamlined.”

WHERE ARE WE NOW? REBUILD FLORIDA, PHASE 1: In September 2018, with much fanfare, Gov. Rick Scott rolled out a program called Rebuild Florida. Funded with $616 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for Hurricane Irma victims in Florida, the first phase of the program set aside $90 million JUST for the Florida Keys. About $50 million would go to repair, rebuild and renovate private homes — whether owned or rented — of the most vulnerable Keys residents (households with elderly, young children, low-income, etc.) The other $40 million would be split among programs for construction of rentals for workforce affordable housing, land acquisition for affordable housing, and voluntary home buyouts.

Fast forward almost a year and, one home project has been completed in Central Florida, far from Hurricane Irma’s ground zero on Cudjoe Key. “We just finished the first house in Lake Wales,” said Reginald Dixon, director of disaster recovery in the state Department of Economic Opportunity. “And we have pushed four houses in Monroe County to the awards stage.”

According to Rebuild Florida officials, 1,250 households in the Keys have registered for the program. Of those, 533 have been “invited to apply” to the program. Frustration is mounting.

“Rebuild Florida has been hyped and hyped and hyped, and not one project done in the Keys,” said former Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent.

Homeowners will not receive funds directly. Rebuild Florida will manage and complete the construction process for the repair or reconstruction of damaged homes on behalf of eligible homeowners. It will use an approved list of contractors licensed in Florida, but not necessarily Monroe County, Dixon said.

Judy Hull, Islamorada Chamber of Commerce: “I’m going to compartmentalize the different grants, and explain the progams to different segments of my membership. I’m going to deal with it more individually. For example, the FWC grant is a good fit for my boat captains.”

DUVAL UNITED FLORIDA MARATHON HISTORY

W

illiam Pope Duval was born near Richmond, Virginia, in Mount Comfort, on Sept. 4, 1784 to William and Nancy Anne Duval.

The elder Duval was a lawyer by trade and by the age of 14, his son had decided that he would follow in his father’s footsteps.

Duval would move to Bardstown, Kentucky at the age of 14 to study law. In 1804, at the ripe old age of 19, he was admitted to the bar and began practicing law.

A Republican, he would serve in the Thirteenth Congress from 18131815 before moving to Florida, where he was appointed a United States judge of the eastern district in a new territory called Florida in 1821.

The following year, President James Monroe would tap Duval to become Florida’s first civilian territorial governor.

Among his other political endeavors, Duval would unite what was then East Florida and West Florida and create a common capital at Tallahassee on March 4, 1824. According to the Key West Register, on June 4, 1829, Duval would appoint Duck Key resident Charles Howe as an associate judge of Monroe County.

Jean Smith Jean B. (Govoni) Smith, 83, of Coventry, Connecticut and Key Colony Beach, Florida, beloved wife of Norval Smith passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2019 after a short illness. She was born Aug. 18, 1935 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to the late Edward and Mary (Braman) Govoni and spent her younger years in Fairhaven Massachusetts. She graduated from Fairhaven High School and then attended Fisher Junior College in Boston. She and her husband Norval were business partners for 30 years at AV Associates Inc. Storrs, Connecticut, where she served as the CFO. She and her husband enjoyed traveling extensively all over the world and were active in boating in both Connecticut and Florida. Jean was also an active member of her community in Key Colony Beach, participating in various civic organizations and events, St Columba church and the Marathon Yacht Club.

Besides her husband, Jean is survived by her daughters Laurie Hamer of Danielson and Tracy A. Will and her husband Blake of Ashford; her brother Edward (Ted) Govoni and his wife Doris of Acushnet Massachusetts; and her step sons; Daryl N. Smith and his wife Cindy of Coventry, Gary R. Smith of Danielson, Wesley T. Smith of Coventry; her grandchildren, Dylan Lakotta, Ryan Will, Cody Will and Camryn Sheehan; Travis Smith, Lukas Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Joel Smith, Sydney Smith; her great grandchildren, Ella Grace Lakotta, London Bascomb, Jennah, Avery, and Cole Smith. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her son Edward (Ted) Hamer, her daughter Holly Hamer and her step daughter Lesley Ann Smith.

AIRPORT UPDATE Marathon to get new airport manager SARAH THOMAS

hile the Trump Administration’s new travel restrictions to Cuba have caused a flurry of concern for cruise ships and airlines (see page 4), Monroe County’s Senior Director of Airports Richard Strickland says flying in the Keys is largely business as usual. The average number of flights coming into Key West daily this March was 66, an uptick reflecting non-stop flight increases.

In February, Key West International Airport celebrated the first non-stop flights from Chicago and Philadelphia, adding to the roster of non-stop options to and from Dallas, Charlotte, Newark and of course, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

“The non-stop flight out of Dallas is doing very well,” said Strickland, adding that overall, the new flights have been a great thing for the Keys economy and culture. “It’s a wonderful experience for Key West, having travelers from all over, and it’s decreased car traffic on the ground.”

The Key West Airport works with American, Delta and United airlines, and Strickland teases that they are working on adding four additional markets for non-stop availability, but “we don’t want to talk about those markets by name … yet.”

The other source of attention for Strickland? Replacing T.J. Henderson, the assistant director of airports who has seen Marathon Airport through nearly two years of Irma recovery.

“T.J. was working very hard to put together all the projects, oversee all the repairs and he filed all of the reports with FEMA to get the insurance claims and funding,” said Strickland. “We finally received some of the money from insurance, and it’s time to get some of the repairs designed.” He said Marathon can expect that “everything should be wrapped up and finished within the first quarter of 2020.”

Henderson was traveling at presstime, and unavailable for comment. With Henderson leaving, there is the question of a replacement. Strickland plans to hire not one person, but two, to fill his shoes.

“T.J. was a great asset to the county. … We are dividing his job into two. There will be an assistant director for Key West International Airport and an airport manager in Marathon, and both positions will be reporting to me.” Strickland said both of the positions are being recruited nationwide.

In other news for Marathon, the Emergency Operations Center, which Strickland calls “sorely needed for the county,” has been designated to be located at the Marathon Airport.

“We’ve been working hand-in-hand with (Monroe County Administrator) Roman Gastesi’s office, and it’s largely been turned over to county staff,” he said.

As summer waxes and tourist travel slows, Keys travelers may be crossing their fingers for lower fares, but don’t hold your breath, says Strickland.

“I think that the Key West market is a good and stable market, and it does a lot for our overall economy here in the Keys.

I do believe that the ticket price that comes into Key West is a ticket price that is serving that market, and the market that it serves is not a discount airline airfare one.”

It’s all part of the privilege of living in paradise. If taking flight is too steep, Strickland concedes, “At 6 a.m., the drive is really beautiful.”

FLORIDA MAN RETURNS He just keeps on giving…

M

y Florida Man column from a few weeks ago got a lot of comments, mostly from people simply flabbergasted that other allegedly intelligent humans could actually do these things that got them immortalized in news headlines. A Twitter account dedicated to Florida Man stories defined the Florida Man as the “world’s worst superhero.”

The same Twitter feed goes on to state, “The stories tend to stand as exemplars of the mythical hyperweirdness of the Sunshine State, but more often simply document the travails of the drug-addicted, mentally ill, and homeless.”

Still, there is something (likely, many things) about Florida that promotes weirdness to the extreme, be it the heat, the humidity, or the proximity of reptilian beasts to Florida population centers. And there is this you-can’t-make-thisstuff-up, hold-my-beer quality to yet another collection of actual Florida Man headlines.

he coconut telegraph banged out the news about Marathon’s newest eatery, The Papi Steak, with incredible efficiency. Just days after the opening on May 8, there was a brisk business at the counter of a bright yellow food truck parked in front of Discount Rock and Sand at 43rd Street and U.S.1.

Some glanced at the menu, but others were confident enough in their decisions to call in the order.

You see, this is not Ruberman Rodriguez’s first rodeo. From 2004 to 2008, he operated la Villa Blanca Café that was down near 22nd Street, and many years before that, a food truck behind the airport.

“A lot of people know us,” said his wife and spokesperson, Rosa, whom we all know as the cheerful, platinum blonde cashier from Publix. “And this is his dream. He’s always wanted to be a chef. Since we lived in Cuba he’s wanted this.”

Rodriguez operates The Papi Steak food truck with his cousin, Leonaldo Peña.

The best bet? You guessed it, the Papi Steak sandwich.

But Rosa said the tacos are selling pretty well. “The customers like them,” she said.

The entrees range from palomilla steak to the tacos to roasted pork and include white rice and black beans or moro (a combo of the two), with a choice of yucca, green plantains or sweet plantains.

The sandwiches include the namesake, plus a Cuban sandwich, or the Cuban Cheese Steak Sandwich or just a delicious chicken sandwich. There are some outliers, too — chicken stirfry and kids’ chicken tenders. The sandwiches come with fries. Oh, and the portions are huuuuge.

“Yes, very big portions,” said Rosa. “And everything on the menu is less than $10.”

Her favorite dish is ropa vieja (shredded beef in a tomato sauce).

It’s what she asks Ruberman to make at home, and what he recently made as a special for the food truck customers. Rosa said it sold out in less than an hour.

“No one has time to make ropa vieja at home, but everyone loves it. At least, that’s what I think,” Rosa said.

Ruberman is considering adding some seafood options in the near future. Regardless, if you want lunch, get there early.

Wesley House seeks foster parents; training begins in June

Florida Keys AHEC is hosting three seminars on opioid misuse and addiction in late June. Guest speakers Pam McGarvey, APRN, and Ashley Garbutt, RN, will address community health workers, clinicians and the general public. ohn Ashcraft responds: I use exotic hardwoods to create unique wood art and in my experience, the tighter the grain of wood, the better the finish.

Some local hardwoods I’ve been using include Cuban red mahogany, Jamaican dogwood, tamarind and sapodilla.

After hurricane Irma we worked with local tree companies and FEMA contractors to repurpose and recycle the local hardwoods into functional art and sculptures. Out of the storm, we have created mantles, sculptures, bars, desks, tables as well as structural beams and “live” edge slabs.

One of the most user-friendly kinds of wood to carve is the local Cuban red mahogany. It is a great exterior hardwood and a stable wood to carve. A finished piece of mahogany art can include roots, burls, branches, natural holes and “live” edges.

The creations from the Keys wood have been shipped all over the world – China, Ukraine, Japan, Norway, Switzerland and Canada.

There is a Tiki made of local timber in front of a castle in Germany!

My name is Mike and I am ‘Off The Chain Carving’ and a native Floridian. I have been a full-time artist for over 20 years and specialize in interior and exterior wood design and functional art.

In the Florida Keys I use exotic hardwoods to create unique wood art for clients locally, nationally and worldwide. About a year ago I pulled into this lot at MM 59. I had my truck and a tool-box in it. I fell in love with this area and have been working here ever since.

There is a piece of wood for everyone! These trees are ‘Grown Here, Made Here’ and this way reused and made it possible to be enjoyed for many, many years by locals and tourists alike. I use every piece of wood that enters the shop. This is my contribution to local economy and the environment.

READING STORM READINESS Hurricane season is here. For serious readers, that means a good book. A fictional escape is essential when a storm is brewing in the middle of the ocean, or about to make landfall in the Keys or some other unfortunate place. We thank our future leaders and MHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Dolphin Pride,” and for giving us a glimpse into their world.

What is something most people don’t know about you? Many people don’t know that I spent last summer in South Africa with the Experiment in International Living.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher is Mrs. Brunk. She makes learning AP chemistry fun and interesting. Her passion for teaching inspires me to be a better student.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education means learning life skills that I can use forever.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The dumbest rule is probably “no hoodies” because the classrooms are all freezing. The best rule is that juniors and seniors can leave for lunch.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? When I was a freshman I didn’t know procrastination was a thing.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you?

I’m involved in National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the swim, weight lifting, and track teams. They are all important to me because they all shape who I am.

What are your plans after high school? I am going to Florida State University.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MHS? I hope to be remembered as a hard worker and a nice person.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? My favorite way to spend my spare time is relaxing at the beach with my friends.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? I am not sure yet.

I have never lived anywhere other than Marathon, so once I go to college and experience somewhere else, I will make my decision.
