slamorada village council will consider 23 items on a lengthy May 30 meeting agenda. In particular, council will decide whether to continue or end the free ride-sharing service Freebee in Upper Matecumbe Key. The ride service, which can take visitors and locals to hotels, restaurants, businesses and other destinations, expires at the end of May. During the April 25 meeting, village council received data on the service. Village Manager Seth Lawless recommended the council to forgo continuing the service.

Freebee is a no-charge, environmentally friendly shuttle service that originated in Miami more than six years ago. Last year, village council approved a six-month trial for Freebee for Upper Matecumbe to see if it would be worth bringing to the area

on a more permanent basis. Freebee also offered advertising, at a cost, on its vehicles for local businesses to get their name and message out.

“The cost per ride is double, triple what you can get an Uber for,” Lawless said. “The advertising revenue hasn’t been anywhere near where they projected it would be. Public transportation is always a loser financially, but there are other options that are cheaper.”

In a Feb. 14 article in the Weekly, John Janusz, economic and community development manager for Freebee, noted the “win-win” experience for visitors and the ambassadors, or drivers, who are more than happy to suggest favorite spots to visitors they shuttle.

At the same time, Janusz said, the vans served as a “company’s moving billboard.”

Freebee vehicles, which people can request via the Ride Freebee app on their phones, can transport up to 14 passengers at no more than 35 mph.

But as Councilman Jim Mooney noted, most, if not all, hotels have 12-passenger golf carts on the road.

“Really, at the end of the day, it was a good try,” Mooney said.

Vice Mayor Mike Forster said he likes the business idea, but not the idea of funding a private business.

“It’s good to give them a start to see what kind of advertising fees they can get and what kind of cost-recovery fees they can get and lower our stake in it,” Forster said. “I wouldn’t mind giving a little bit of money because it does provide service and reduces carbon footprint, but not at the level they’re getting now.”

Until they can cross a bridge, Councilman Ken Davis said the service “is a fail.”

STORM WARNING KNOWLEDGE CAN SAVE LIVES

n May 23, the same day the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its 2019 hurricane forecast, the director of the National Hurricane Center, Kenneth Graham, was visiting the Keys. Every year, the Key West and Florida Keys Lodging Association invites dignitaries to address the tourism industry about hurricanes. Held at Marathon City Hall, the seminar also included remarks from the National Weather Service’s Chip Kasper from the Key West office, and Monroe County Emergency Management Director Martin Senterfitt. Here are a few interesting facts to take into consideration the next time it blows:

IT’S THE WATER — NOT THE WIND — THAT KILLS. And, about half the deaths took place in motor vehicles. It’s suspected that some evacuees waited until too late to leave, and then tried to drive in dangerous conditions. Unfortunately, the elderly are usually the victims of direct storm fatalities. But indirect fatalities — those that happen after the storm — exceed direct fatalities. Cardiac arrest is the biggest culprit in after-the-storm deaths.

IN THE PAST 10 YEARS, 175 people in the U.S. have been killed by Category 1 storms. Yep, Category 1; don’t dismiss any storm.

THE HIGHEST STORM SURGE IN HURRICANE FLORENCE (Carolinas, 2018) occurred 100 miles inland. Coastal areas are not the only ones that need to be on alert.

THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER is the most trusted source for hurricane information. Consider this: in 2018, in the 12 days before Hurricane Florence made landfall, the center’s website had 739 million hits. During last year’s hurricane season, 32 million new, or “unique,” devices logged on to the site. Avoid “weathertainment,” said Chip Kasper of the NWS’s office in Key West.

METEOROLOGISTS USE THE TERM “ANCHORING” for people who latch onto the first piece of storm information and then refuse to change their position despite changes to the storm. In fact, NHC Director Kenneth Graham said NOAA is actively recruiting meteorologists who also understand behavioral science so the service can better motivate consumers to act appropriately.

GRAHAM SAID THAT IN 2019, he’s emphasizing rapidly intensifying storms and storms that speed up. Of the four Category 5 storms that have made landfall in the U.S. — Labor Day, Camille, Michael and Andrew — all were tropical storms three days out before they became monsters. “There’s a misconception that this big, strong storm will have major lead time, and they don’t,” he said. Graham advised officials, business leaders and residents to practice fast evacuations.

FDA examining active ingredients

Village staff gathers for hurricane preparation

A

storm was brewing in the Atlantic on May 21. Popping up out of nowhere, Fire Chief Terry Abel tells village staff during a hurricane preparation exercise, it became a tropical storm, and almost a hurricane, before fizzling out as quickly as it came about.

Hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico usually form from June 1 through Nov. 30, but they can develop before and after these dates.

On May 23, Islamorada village department heads and staff convened at Fire Station 20, which serves as a central coordination point for disaster response, for a little hurricane preparation 101.

Abel, who serves as the emergency coordinator for the village, spent the morning providing information on a range of topics, from preparation and evacuation to storm surge and working together during disaster response.

Abel began the session by asking the group who had a personal plan for an evacuation, for which a few raised their hands.

“Make sure you’ve got a plan and make sure you know what it’s going to take to make that happen,” Abel said. “Make sure you have enough supplies for 72 hours.

That’s what it took for this station to get back online following Irma. My house on Plantation Key, we were down five solid days. Water came out on day three and four.”

Colorado State University is predicting 13 named storms, five becoming hurricanes and two of them major hurricanes. What does that mean? “Absolutely nothing,” Abel says.

“All it takes is for us to be under the bottom of one of them,” he said.

“Everybody likes to see the El Niño versus La Niña year. When stuff is going on in the Pacific, it’s good for us because when it’s raging over there, it creates upper level shear, which keeps our storms from actually forming. Once it traverses over Central America, it actually tears the tops of the storms off.”

The hurricane exercise also delved into re-entry into the Keys following a storm, disaster response and roles and responsibilities of village personnel during recovery.

TERRY’S TIPS Fire Chief Terry Abel offers some helpful storm-related tips: • Gas/fuel — know your burn rate and how much you use per day to prepare accordingly. Buy more fuel cans.

• Water — A person uses about 3 gallons of water a day.

Stock up for enough of a supply that can last days.

• Cash is king — “bring tons of money because when the Internet is down and the phones are down, your ATM cards don’t work.”

• If evacuating to a hotel, make sure it’s not in the evacuation zone.

• Ensure hotels you’re evacuating to are pet friendly if you have a furry friend.

• Tire plugging kit, work gloves and protective eyewear are important items to have.

unscreens protect against melanoma risks, skin cancers and premature aging. But questions are growing over active ingredients found in some products and how they may be absorbed into the bloodstream.

A study on sunscreens was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers conducted what’s called an exploratory maximal usage trial to evaluate the absorption of active ingredients in four commercially available sunscreen products. Researchers say the study evaluates the systematic absorption of a topical drug when used according to the product’s directions.

Researchers say they found sunscreen ingredients are absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream at higher levels than originally thought. But they say the finding calls for more testing to determine the safety of sunscreen products.

The FDA this year issued a proposed rule to update regulatory requirements for most sunscreen products in the U.S., where sunscreens are regulated as drugs. As part of the rule, the FDA is asking for additional safety data on 12 active sunscreen ingredients in available products. The FDA said that mineral sunscreen ingredients, specifically zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are safe. However, ingredients including oxybenzone and octinoxate need more research to determine if they can be officially listed as safe.

“The proposal we’ve put forward would improve quality, safety and efficacy of the sunscreens Americans use every day,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. “We will continue to work with industry, consumers and public health stakeholders to ensure that we’re striking the right balance.”

Research has found that oxybenzone is a key ingredient that’s known to damage marine ecosystems like coral reefs.

While Blum started Stream2Sea specifically to protect coral reefs, she said the issue extends far beyond her initial focus. Ongoing research shows that oxybenzone reacts with chlorine in swimming pools to create even more toxic agents, and it is not removed from most wastewater treatment plants.

“That means that someone in Minnesota who spends their afternoon in a pool will likely excrete oxybenzone in their urine that washes down the Mississippi River, potentially impacting the drinking water sources of hundreds of communities along the way — and then moving through the Gulf of Mexico and ending up in the coral reefs off the Florida Keys,” she said.

The study states that the FDA relies on manufacturers to provide the data on sunscreen active ingredients necessary to establish safety and effectiveness for use in sunscreens. The agency is committed to working with industry and public health stakeholders to help ensure the sunscreens used every day by consumers and their families are safe and effective for use.

istorically, Key Largo was always just the name of the largest island in the Florida Keys. It was home to two towns, Rock Harbor and Tavernier.

After the enormous success of “Key Largo,” the John Huston movie starring Humphrey Bogart that brought significant attention to the island and the infamous Caribbean Club, people became frustrated that they could not send a letter or postcard with a Key Largo postmark.

The island of Key Largo had two post offices, one at Tavernier and the other at Rock Harbor and while the Caribbean Club was located on the island of Key Largo, its postmark was Rock Harbor.

Key Largo residents circulated a petition to have the official postal address changed from Rock Harbor to Key Largo. Subsequently, the Rock Harbor Post Office ceased to exist on May 31, 1952. The Key Largo Post Office opened June 1, 1952.

The Tavernier Community Association will conduct a general membership meeting on Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. at the Tavernier Volunteer Fire Department, located at 151 Marine Avenue.

The guest speaker will be Phil Goodman, District 2 commissioner and chairman of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. Goodman will present information on the methods and results of district operations, with emphasis on new technologies and priorities. He will address the district’s evolution from nuisance pest control to a more comprehensive mission of addressing public health issues related to mosquito control.

The meeting is open to the public and audience questions and comments are welcome.

The Tavernier Community Association is organized to provide a community voice to represent the needs and desires of the Tavernier Community.

Play the ukulele at the library A local musician will be teaching children ages 8-12 how to play ukulele on Mondays at the Key Largo Library. Children must be pre-registered for the class. It will take place on Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. starting on Monday, June 3, in the Key Largo Library’s community room. Ukuleles will be available to borrow for the class.

The class is limited in size. Registration forms are available at the Key Largo Library located in the Publix Tradewinds Shopping Plaza.

Art fun at Key Largo library Every Tuesday and Wednesday you can participate in some art fun at the Key Largo Library. Tuesdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. you can bring your supplies and items you are working on.

Sometimes one of the artists brings a project for everyone to share. It’s a time for learning, creating and helping each other. On Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. a still life will be set up in the library’s community room where there is plenty of room for easels. There are also tables and chairs available. Artists may bring paints, pencils, sketchbooks, watercolors, etc. to practice. Beginners are always welcome to both events. The Key Largo Library is located in the Publix Tradewinds Shopping Plaza.

Sanctuary foundation names leadership The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation welcomes Lad Akins as director and Sara Rankin as development officer of its newly-established Florida Keys chapter.

Akins, a longtime advocate for Florida Keys waters, was the founding executive director of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) and is currently the CEO of Blue Earth Conservation. Rankin brings a wealth of experience in nonprofit management and development in Florida and nationally, with organizations including Autism Speaks, the United Way and the American Lung Association. Akins and Rankin will lead efforts in the Keys and across Florida to expand private support for the protection and restoration of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and conduct education and outreach programs that promote stewardship of our ocean and strengthen conservation.

Kris Sarri, president and CEO of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, said, “We are excited to welcome Lad and Sara to the Florida Keys chapter. Their leadership success at non-profit organizations combined with their demonstrated commitment and passion for conserving the waters of the Keys makes clear that they are the right choices to lead the chapter.”

First formed in January 2019 through a merger with the Sanctuary Friends Foundation of the Florida Keys, the chapter’s priorities include establishing partnerships with local businesses and organizations to invest in on-the-water conservation projects. The chapter’s current programs include supporting marine debris removal through Goal: Clean Seas Florida Keys, improving buoy and marker infrastructure to support sustainable recreational use, and supporting efforts to combat coral disease and restore the reef ecosystem.

The chapter supports Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which protects spectacular, unique and nationally significant marine resources.

Signups for youth, 6-on-6 underway

T

he Upper Keys Football League will have a 6-on-6 league this year.

Signups are underway for the league, which begins Aug. 1 with practice. Each league will play 8-10 games. There will be a league for 6- to 7-year-olds, 8- to 9-year-olds, 10- to 12-year-olds and 13- to 14-year-olds. All games will be played in Islamorada at Coral Shores football field, so there will be no traveling to Key West or Homestead.

“We’re doing this so kids who want to play football have some football program,” said Coach Augie Wample.

“With 6-on-6, we’re aiming for nineman teams.”

The playing field will be shortened to 80- by 40-yards. Wampler said the league is focusing on safety, as coaches will be certified to teach safe tackling. Players will also have new, state-of-the-art helmets, Wampler said.

The league is looking for coaches and anybody who wants to help. Each team will have two to three coaches.

4 ways to promote biodiversity KARUNA EBERL

Since most of us don’t have time to make sense of it, here’s the summary of the UN’s report on the state of our natural world, with respect to humans’ impact, which was released in May:

A

crash of biodiversity — or the millions of plants, animals and insects that interconnect to keep our natural world stable and provide us with clean water, energy, air, and food — is imminent, unless we take “immediate, radical change across society, politics, economics and technology,” say scientists associated with the report.

In other words, they say if we want to keep a semblance of our current world and life comforts beyond the next decade or two, we must shift the way humans see the land and oceans, from an economy resource to that which we have a moral responsibility to treat in a harmonious and sustainable way.

Why is this important? Without biodiversity, “the foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life” are rapidly deteriorating. Currently, $577 billion in annual global crops are at risk from pollinator loss. “We are not just talking about nice species out there; (biodiversity) is our life-support system.”

The global biomass of wild mammals has fallen by 82 percent. Only 13 percent of wetlands remain worldwide. Only 3 percent of marine areas are free from human pressure. Threequarters of all land has been significantly altered by man, along with two-thirds of the marine environment. The world population has just about doubled since 1970. Since 1992, the world's urban areas have more than doubled. Plastic pollution has increased tenfold since 1980. As a result, more than a million species of plant and animal are at risk of extinction in the next few decades, or less.

Land use is the main driver of the biodiversity collapse: over-fishing, over-farming, over-clearing of land, hunting and poaching. Pollution and climate change are next in line, and the latter is increasingly exacerbating the problems.

“The evidence is crystal clear. Nature is in trouble,” one of the project’s co-chairs, Sandra Díaz, told National Geographic.

HOW WE, AS A SPECIES, CAN STOP IT, ACCORDING TO THE REPORT: 1. Shift society away from embracing GDPs and growth models, and move toward more holistic and long-term sustainability economics. In other words, we need to shift our thinking toward valuing nature and social equity, and away from the notion that consumerism equals a good quality of life; and we need to re-root our economies in nature-based planning as the foundation.

2. To do that, we must end subsidies and incentives for exploitive use of resources, such as fossil fuel extraction, along with industrial fishing and agriculture, and put them into restoring and protecting nature, and driving green infrastructures.

3. Another biggie is rapidly increasing the amount of land and sea under protection. The goal is 50 percent of land protected by 2050, with 30 percent by 2030 (about 15 percent is currently protected). Scientists have a proposal for how to do this, called the Global Deal for Nature, which would still allow for sustainable land uses within the protected areas. Along with these protections, greater international cooperation and enforcement of new and existing laws is also vital.

4. In many places, give control of resources back to indigenous peoples and local communities, as they are often much better environmental stewards than national or corporate institutions.

WHAT WE, AS KEYS CITIZENS, CAN DO: 1. Vote for politicians who understand the realities of this science, and who believe this must take precedence over other political issues. With the timeline being as critical as it is, this is the most vital piece of the solution any one of us can contribute. We might not agree with a particular politician on everything (or much at all, for that matter), but we need to put our own agendas aside to get politicians in there, on all levels of government, who actually intend to put this front and center, and do something about it. The changes we need are sweeping and major, the scale that only governments can accomplish.

2. Support our local nature organizations’ research and conservation work, such as the Florida Keys Wildlife Society, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. There are many worthy ones.

3. Reduce meat, dairy and junk food intake.

Cattle grazing takes up 25 percent of the world’s ice-free land (more than all land that is currently protected) and creates nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. Land in the tropics is of particular concern for biodiversity, as it is being deforested at high rates to make room for more cattle and farming. As for junk food, besides containing empty calories that do no good for us and creating wrapper pollution, many also use palm oil from illegally deforested lands, and all require significant petroleum for manufacturing and shipping. Also, the importance of eating only sustainably caught fish cannot be overstated (luckily, that’s an easy one for us in the Keys).

4. Reduce consumption of material goods.

Simplify. Stop buying knickknacks and gag gifts.

If you are a business owner, cease selling or creating such stuff. Reuse, repurpose. Keeping our ecosystems intact will require us to undergo a major shift in thinking. It will require a departure from our current lifestyle consumptions, into habits that are more ethical toward nature.

This will not always be comfortable, but it will be worth it.

Our current predicament is not without hope. If we can start seeing land and water as ecosystems and not property, we have a chance.

Or in Díaz’s words, “The future will be bad for us if we don’t act now. There is no future for us without nature.”

o celebrate National Pizza Party Day, Ciao Hound Italian Kitchen & Bar, MM 84, Oceanside, invited a select group of food and travel influencers and writers for its “Pizza Dough & Vino” event at Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina on May 16.

I had the opportunity to get creative with flavors during a “Construct A Personal Pizza” lesson with Postcard Inn’s executive chef, Ryan Wisely, while sipping on a selection of wines and cocktails and sampling some of Ciao Hound’s specialty hors d’oeuvres.

We were enthusiastically greeted

by Ciao Hound’s team of Lourdes Torbisco, regional director of marketing; Jorge Diaz, marketing coordinator; and Wisely, who made sure we were well cared for the entire evening.

They started us off with prosecco and their homemade red and white sangria, as well as their selected wines to pair with the pizza later on. (I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorites, Sur de los Andes, as one of their suggested reds; I had it every day when in Argentina.)

During this time, we were introduced to Wisely, who came to Ciao Hound via Miami and several other places. It’s obvious he loves the whole idea of handmade pizza rustica. With much excitement, he showed us all of his selected toppings on the long table that was set up for us to make our own. Being Italian, I was especially pleased to see fresh basil, roasted tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella as topping options, along with a traditional marinara sauce and a surprising alfredo sauce. When given the signal, all of us went to work creating our masterpieces.

While the pies were being fired in the authentic pizza oven, we were escorted to our well-set media table, where we immediately tore into the antipasti plate, with some seriously crusty bread and EVOO. The family-style plate of mussels marinara was a great start, paired alongside the calamari — hot, crispy and firm, not rubbery, which is how it should be, with a nice light red sauce (my only beef these days is, why don’t restaurants serve the tentacles — my favorite part— any more?).

We all had fun getting to know each other while we ate with management and staff as they engaged us in fun conversation. In about a half-hour, our flatbread pizzas began arriving, and we immediately began comparing them to each other. (Wisely seemed to like the way mine came out, with a tricolor Italian flag of mozzarella, tomatoes and basil.) Looking up and down the table, we each had unknowingly concocted very different pizzas.

The pizza oven did its job perfectly — a crisp, thin crust, with nicely done cheese. I resisted my New York urge to fold my slices — that would have undermined the whole presentation of the toppings. While we enjoyed our pies, the attentive wait staff kept our wine glasses half-full. Dinner was completed with cannoli and coffee. And as if all this wasn’t enough, we topped off this lovely evening of conversation, wine and pizza with a visit to the Tiki Bar in the rear, which was hopping with Thursday nighters enjoying the beautiful evening.

Ciao Hound’s take on the Italian menu is a welcome addition to the Upper Keys. It reminds me of the comfort food I miss from New York (frutti di mare, anyone?), but with a Keys influence, like herb & parmesan crusted mahi-mahi with pancetta, broccolini and Key lime sauce.

While not yet complete, the facilities surrounding Ciao Hound and the Postcard Inn should be completed by the end of summer, which will make for an all-inclusive stay on the property. Based on the wonderful evening I experienced at Ciao Hound, I would highly recommend a visit to this redone Italian outpost in the Upper Keys, where a knowledgeable and friendly staff awaits to serve you some of the best Italian food you’ll find in our area.

EXHIBIT UNVEILING Explore underwater archaeology at History of Diving

T

he History of Diving Museum is partnering with Diving with a Purpose (DWP) and the National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS), for the opening of the new featured exhibit, “Restoring Our Oceans, Preserving Our Heritage.” The event on Sunday, June 2, which goes from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will include a chance to meander through the exhibit, a ribbon-cutting reception and presentations. Light refreshments will be served.

This exhibit looks at underwater archaeology and how it has been used to understand cultural and historical significance and stories behind shipwrecks and more. Diving With a Purpose is a non-profit focused on the African-American component of these stories. The topics on display range from sailing vessels to slave ships to the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Sunday evening activities include two speakers. NASA engineer Erik Densen will speak on his involvement with the DWP organization from its beginnings in 2004, plus the various

projects they have worked on with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, National Park Service, NOAA, and others that helped put this exhibit together. The second speaker is archaeologist Dr. Justin Dunnavant, who has also worked closely with DWP and the research associated with African American history in relation to the archaeological sites.

The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 31 with more events and special presentations. Some include Dive Into History weekend, June 15-16, with a Saturday morning event at the museum and an afternoon dive/marine scavenger hunt at Captain Slate’s Scuba Adventure; free admission for dads on Father’s Day; celebrating PADI Women Dive Day on July 20 with a morning presentation at the museum from Keys local Karuna Eberl, director, as she discusses her award-winning documentary “The Guerrero Project,” covering the 1827 slave ship that sank off the Florida coast. The afternoon includes a Heritage Awareness dive with Sailfish Scuba in Key Largo. More information is at divingmuseum.org.

ith fine ales, some delicious fried food and friendly service, stop on in to Dillon’s Pub and Grill if you’re eyeing a spot to dine in Tavernier.

Located at the Tavernier Towne Center shopping plaza at MM 91, bayside, Dillon’s is a local favorite and has won people’s choice awards for best bar, which spans the width of the restaurant; best wings, which this wing lover totally agrees with; and best staff, who are friendly and stay attentive to the patrons’ needs.

With excellent starters and entrees, you’ll be sure to get your pub grub fix at Dillon’s. For beginners, the pepperjack mac & cheese bites is an appetizer worth having after you order up your beer or cocktail.

They’re crunchy on the outside, extremely creamy inside, and they have a nice kick at the end. Dip them with the ranch dressing that’s provided and you’re well on your way to satisfying that appetite.

There also are buffalo shrimp and deluxe nachos for appetizers.

Or, go ahead and get yourself a cup or bowl of French onion soup with a nice cheese covering or some chili with some additional cheddar jack.

As a native of Buffalo, New York, where chicken wings are everything, I must say Dillon’s has the best around. They’re never breaded and always marinated. They’re fried to perfection and served up nice and saucy. With some creamy bleu cheese and a cold beer, it really doesn’t get any better. These wings are award winning — as they should be. With traditional options of mild, medium and hot, there’s also barbecue, teriyaki, Thai, Jamaican jerked and honey hot.

The buffalo chicken wrap and chicken wings are worth getting when stopping by Dillon’s Pub and Grill at the plaza in Tavernier.

If you’re in the mood for seafood, go for the crunchy seafood platter, which comes with grouper filet, three jumbo shrimp and clam strips. Fried in a crunchy breading, the platter comes with fries and coleslaw. As for sandwiches, there’s no going wrong with the crunchy grouper or the mahi-mahi.

There’s also a selection of salads, quesadillas and entrée options such as chicken parmesan, mahi Sonoma and black angus prime rib, which is a 12-ounce portion served with a salad, baked potato and au jus.

Lunch specials run daily from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner specials go from 5 to 10 p.m. And if you’re itching for a little corned beef and cabbage, stop in on a Thursday for Irish night. Dillon’s is also the perfect spot to watch sports, with nine televisions and a large projector screen.

Event delves into history of Keys attractions

n May 16, the community came out to gain a little insight into the history of tourism and Florida Keys attractions. The Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation hosted “Florida Keys or Bust: A Celebration of Tourism” at the Islander Resort Conference Center, MM 82, oceanside. The event gave a look back at the community’s tourism roots with a presentation by Cori Convertito, curator of the Key West Art & Historical Society. With delicious food also came classic games like ping-pong, horseshoes and badminton. Vintage postcards from local collector Allen Brock were also on display. Proceeds from the event went to benefit the foundation, which operates the Keys History & Discovery Center, located on the property of the Islander Resort.

In Islamorada, community members convened at the Hurricane Monument for a Memorial Day service, which saw American Legion Post 145 members, Boy Scout Troop 914, the Islamorada Fire Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Rick Ramsay, Village Mayor Deb Gillis, County Mayor Sylvia Murphy and many others. Event mobilizes action to save coral reefs

O

n Friday and Saturday, June 7-8, ocean lovers in Florida and the Caribbean will work to help save and restore coral reefs during Coralpalooza 2019 — Our World Oceans Day. “Coralpalooza is a way for all ocean lovers, whether on land or in the water, to unite to prevent the loss of our coral reefs,” said Roxane Boonstra, Coral Restoration Foundation dive and volunteer coordinator. “By working together in this 48-hour period, this massive, coordinated, tangible action sends a message of hope for coral reefs from the Florida Keys to the rest of the world.”

On June 8 beginning at 10 a.m., participants will head to the Coral Restoration Foundation Center, located at 5 Seagate Boulevard, Key Largo, for some Coralpalooza fun. During the event, an army of scuba divers will be physically restoring degraded coral reefs over two days. Recreational scuba divers will join experienced coral restoration practitioners in the water, physically outplanting critically endangered corals to degraded reefs, halting and reversing their decline.

On World Oceans Day every year, hundreds of people gather to demonstrate the impact of collaborative action. This year will be the fifth annual Coralpalooza.

Coordinated by Coral Restoration Foundation, it’s the largest coral restoration organization in the world. They have been restoring reefs in Florida for 12 years, and have now returned more than 80,000 critically endangered corals back to the Florida Reef Tract.

Coral Restoration Foundation invented the Coral Tree, a simple, cost-effective technology that is one of the best ways to grow huge amounts of corals, fast. The foundation’s nurseries are the biggest in the world, with the largest covering 1.5 acres of sea floor, containing more than 740 Coral Trees, and capable of producing more than 42,000 “reef-ready” corals every year.

In the last 30 years, the world has lost more than 50% of its coral reefs.

Coral reefs are a vital component of life in the ocean. They are the “rainforests of the sea”, and support more than 25% of all marine life. Without coral reefs, the delicate balance of life in the ocean will collapse, and, given that over 70% of the oxygen that we breathe comes from the ocean, the consequences for all life on Earth would be catastrophic.

Divers, snorkelers, landlubbers and ocean lovers of all ages can get involved in saving coral reefs during Coralpalooza.

The event is being held in collaboration with CoralVita, Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources, Horniman Museum and Gardens, Fundemar, Mote Marine Laboratory, Oceanus, Rescue a Reef, Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences, Seascape Caribbean, Ticatove, Triton’s Realm, and UNAM. Coralpalooza is spreading from its home in the Florida Keys to Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Dominica, Hawaii, Jamaica, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Roatan, and London. It is set to be the biggest single day of active reef restoration the world has ever seen.

But it’s not only divers who will be making a difference for coral reefs on World Oceans Day. There are opportunities for all ocean lovers to get involved.

Businesses and other non-profits are also joining the action. Coralpalooza 2019 is sponsored by the Angari Foundation, Fury Water Adventures, Horizon Divers, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Silent World Dive Center, Keys Diver, Rainbow Reef, Key Dives, Island Ventures, Reef Box, and Filter King.

“Coralpalooza's ability to make such a significant impact in coral reef science, conservation and public outreach in a single event is inspiring,” said Angela Rosenberg, president of the Angari Foundation and captain of R/V. Angari, “and we're proud to participate and provide R/V ANGARI in support of this year's event."

‘LIVE ISLAND LIFE’ YouTube show puts lights on Keys

“I

t’s really difficult to find good information about living in the Florida Keys,” said Carlos Garcia. “I couldn’t find out anything before I moved here, so I made it my mission to provide insider information about the Keys and our lifestyle to people all over the world.”

Garcia has been visiting the Keys with his then-girlfriend-now-wife since he was in college, over 18 years ago. They fell in love with the community and finally moved to Key Largo in 2018 with their kids.

“I grew up in Brazil and have traveled all over the world, but I have never lived in a place like the Keys where I am constantly in awe. This place is so incredible — the natural beauty, the quiet on most days of the year, and the slow pace of life where my kids can grow up much like I did in Brazil,” said Garcia.

“And, the sunsets are the prettiest on the entire planet.”

Garcia decided to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a Realtor once he arrived in the Keys. Then, things got interesting. “After I got my real estate license, it became about marketing. But I did not want to simply knock on doors, get listings and sell houses without providing my clients more value. That search for value creation grew out of my own frustrations as a new resident of the Keys,” said

Garcia. “I couldn’t find detailed information about living in the keys — the schools, the secret spots — so I created my Instagram (@IntheFloridaKeys) and media channels (www.carlosginthefloridakeys.com) to find out and share that information with not just my clients, but everyone — viewers, visitors and newcomers — and document the best of daily life in the Keys.”

Garcia’s media channels, created three months ago, provide him with platforms on which to connect to thousands virtually and everyone locally. Followers watch and comment as he visits local restaurants, lists homes for sale, attends community events with his family and highlights secret local spots, all to capture and document the rich and unique experience of living here in the Keys.

Garcia often sports his signature “G-shirt” and is known to many as “Carlos G. in the Florida Keys,” from his Instagram handle. Most of his followers are from South Florida, but some tune in

from farther away — New York, Texas, California, Dubai and Brazil. The common link is that everyone is interested in the Florida Keys, either as a current resident, visitor, future resident, or a lover of island life.

Garcia has teamed up with Paola Velez, a local model from South Miami, to co-host “Live Island Life,” a real estate show debuting on Garcia’s YouTube channel on May 24. Every two weeks, Garcia and Velez will give viewers an intimate tour of little-known, very exclusive properties for sale in the Keys. Their motivation behind the show is similar to that for Garcia’s Instagram channel: to connect people in a real way to the Keys.

“I don’t want to spoil the show, but we bring in an awesome local chef to prepare a vegan meal for us in one of the homes. On another episode, we do a dive right off the private island.

And in another, we take paddleboards provided by a local shop and paddle out into the sunset,” said Garcia. “The whole point of the show is to keep our viewers entertained, support the local businesses that make things happen in the Keys, show folks all the wonderful things they can do in the Florida Keys, and of course showcase these incredible homes.” Velez said, The pair are hosting 12 separate homes, from Key Largo all the way to Key West, on the 12 episodes of this inaugural first season. The homes are all currently listed by Ocean Sotheby’s and include waterfront estates, private islands, and historic places not always accessible to the public. The second season is in the works and expanding into more local and international partnerships.

“Each home has its own story and its own uniqueness, but all of them are amazing!” said Velez. “Honestly though, I would be very happy with even a shed on the beach if that guaranteed I could be in the Keys for the rest of my life! This place is amazing, and I am so excited to show everyone why!”
