PROJECT PROGRESS Anne’s Beach ahead of schedule

I

f all goes as planned, renovation at a popular park in Lower Matecumbe wiped out by Hurricane Irma could be complete by early summer.

Located at MM 73.5, oceanside, Anne’s Beach was closed after the storm took out park infrastructure and parking. Rebuilding started in October 2018 following village council’s approval to go with Island Villa Construction for about $1.4 million.

Public Works Director AJ Engelmeyer told the Weekly the project’s moving along ahead of the contract time of October 2019. Pre-Irma amenities, boardwalk, pavilions and parking will be replaced in the same locations.

Engelmeyer said construction included mitigation and hardening of the parking lots, boardwalk and six pavilions to help prevent a total loss as experienced with Irma.

“Irma completely destroyed the boardwalk and six pavilions at Anne’s Beach,” Engelmeyer said. “The parking lots experienced erosion and major damage was caused by storm surge in the bathrooms. The facilities at Anne’s Beach will be in a similar layout as pre-Irma but much nicer and more resilient.”

With the project ahead of schedule, locals and guests will be sure to check out Anne’s Beach with new boardwalk and pavilions along the oceanfront. Judy Hull, executive director for the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce said she’s thrilled with the progress.

Anne’s Beach is named after environmentalist and Lower Matecumbe resident Anne Eaton.

“Anne’s Beach is one of our most popular attractions,” Hull said. “When people visit us, their first question is where’s the beach? Anne’s beach is a wonderful place, and we’re excited that it’s going to be complete this summer.”

Matecumbe Historical Trust sets Memorial Day service

The Matecumbe Historical Trust will hold its annual Memorial Day service to remember those who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. The service will be held on Monday, May 27 starting at 9 a.m. at the Islamorada Hurricane Monument, MM 81.8 oceanside, on Overseas Highway.

Barbara Edgar, president of the Matecumbe Historical Trust, will make an introductory presentation followed by the invocation, presentation of colors and the national anthem. Guest speakers will be Monroe County Mayor Sylvia Murphy, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Village of Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis. The American Legion Post 145 will present “The Fallen Comrade Table.” A brief history of the Hurricane Monument will be given, followed by the laying of memorial wreaths sponsored by Centennial Bank and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and music including taps, “Some Gave All” and “God Bless the USA” sung by Dan Furmanik, followed by a benediction. Raffle raises money to fight cystic fibrosis Time is running out for a chance to enter the Redbone raffle and win a 2019 Mercury 150 HP, 4-stroke outboard engine donated by Mercury Marine. The raffle benefits Redbone’s 31-year commitment to help fight cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that effects approximately 30,000 people in the United States. When the Redbone was first established in 1988, children with the disease rarely lived to attend high school. Ocean Life series talk will focus on turtles The year-long Ocean Life Series brings renowned marine science researchers and academics to the Keys to educate, entertain, and inspire audiences of all ages. Hosted by Florida International University’s Center for Coastal Oceans Research (CCOR) and the Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center (FKLCC), the series features interdisciplinary experts from FIU and the Keys.

On Thursday, May 23, Dr. Lawrence Wood, a biologist for National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation and the founder of the Florida Hawksbill Project, will discuss hawksbill turtles in Florida and the Keys. The title of this lecture is “Jewels on the Reef: The Hawksbill Turtles of Florida.”

OCEAN REEF TAKES OFF UPPER KEYS HISTORY BRAD BERTELLI

The Ocean Reef property began as a 40-acre lot purchased by Morris and Alice Baker in 1946.

By the end of the 1950s, what had begun as a small fishing club would add an additional 1,300ish acres. In order to create the luxury resort village Ocean Reef would become, it was necessary to dredge channels, build docks, and create roads.

During the 1950s, signs could be found around the property that read, “Don’t take a shower ’til you smell; we haul our water and it costs like hell.”

Ocean Reef became accessible by airplane when the property’s private airstrip opened to traffic in 1956. Dedication ceremonies for the 2,000-foot landing strip were held from May 18-20. What became the Ocean Reef Airport, home to Ocean Reef Airlines, offered daily service between the resort and Miami International Airport. In 1980, a one-way trip between the two cost $28.

MOONEY IS ALL IN FOR DISTRICT 120 LONGTIME RESIDENT, COUNCILMAN TO RUN FOR STATE REP

H

e was 99 percent sure last year about a run for state representative with current Rep. Holly Raschein terming out in 2020.

Last week, IslamoJim Mooney rada native and current councilman Jim Mooney finalized that decision. He’s 100 percent in.

It was a year and a half ago when Mooney heard from others that he should pursue Raschein’s seat. Thinking long and hard about a potential run, Mooney, a Republican, says he also heard from some people in Monroe County he highly respects who told him to go for it.

“I was like, yeah we’ll see,” Mooney said in a recent sit-down with the Weekly. “Then there’s the moment where you go, shoot, have I lost my mind? And what if I’m going to spend the summer somewhere else? Then I thought, ‘Yeah, I’m not going anywhere.’”

Mooney is well attuned to the government scene, having served as mayor and councilman of the village for a number of years. He’s also visited Tallahassee on several occasions for Keys Day, witnessing the basic interworking of it all. Mooney said he could have served one more term on the village dais. The decision to forgo that wasn’t easy, he says.

“I spoke to my daughter and my son and my fiancée, and the village and Roget (Bryan) and Seth (Lawless),” Mooney said. “I asked them point blank where would I better serve the village and the Keys. And they said Tallahassee. I hate just walking away from things when you still have more time available.”

Growing up in the Keys, Mooney is very well familiar with the issues — water quality especially having been around it since he was a kid. Mooney says water quality and building a resilient Florida Keys is everything at the end of the day.

“We know it can be done,” Mooney says.

“My philosophy is every step taken is a positive step.”

Mooney admits that filling Raschein’s shoes wouldn’t be easy. He said she’s been inspirational and “a super rock star.”

“She’s so well respected up there,” he said. “She worked for Ron Saunders, a Democrat. She worked for Ken Sorensen.

She earned her spot, and those are two really good guys who worked hard to take care

of the southern district. Holly earned it all.”

Mooney says he believes he can bring continued knowledge of the Keys to Tallahassee. And having watched session before at the state capitol, he notes that it’s a much bigger arena.

“I don’t mean that from workload or numbers of people, but everybody’s fighting for the slice of the pie,” he said. “We’re District 120, and we have tons of needs that other districts maybe don’t. It’s going to be a delicate balance act how you get what you want and help them get what they want, and hope you can meet somewhere in the middle.”

Mooney says if he’s fortunate enough to win, he feels he can get the job done.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m excited about it. Of course, I got to win,” Mooney said. “I have good support down here. The Florida Keys is my home, and Islamorada is my home.”

FUNDING, FINALLY? PRESIDENT SUPPORTS $200 MILLION FOR EVERGLADES JIM McCARTHY

letter by South Florida Water Management District board members to U.S. Congress for Everglades funding was answered as seen within the president’s budget proposal, and more recently, approval by the House Appropriations Committee.

On May 10, the SFWMD governing board issued a letter to the U.S. House’s Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, and Chairwoman Marcy Kaptur, related appropriations subcommittees in the U.S. House and fellow representatives. The letter also went to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development.

Within the letter, board members urged support for the highest possible funding for the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration line items, as well as $200 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restore the Everglades.

“There is strong bipartisan support for restoring America’s Everglades, and this world-renowned ecosystem depends on a sustained $200 million in annual federal funding for restoration,” the SFWMD letter reads.

Three days later, President Donald Trump changed his budget proposal, increasing Everglades funding from $63

million to the requested $200 million.

Taking to Twitter, Trump says Congress needs to help complete the world’s largest intergovernmental watershed restoration project, he said.

“Good for Florida and good for the environment,” he said.

On May 21, the House Appropriations Committee gave approval to the energy and water appropriations bill, which was amended to include the $200 million in funding for Everglades restoration. It will now go before the full U.S. House.

Cheryl Meads, SFWMD at-large board member, says she’s optimistic Congress will approve the funding needed to restore the Everglades. As for the letter to Congress that the SFWMD board sent, Meads said she reached out to the district’s communications staff to put something together. Executive Director Drew Bartlett felt a letter signed by all board members would be more effective.

“At the last board meeting that we had, all the letters were prepared, and we all read and signed them,” Meads said. “Our communications director and our executive director made sure it went to every member of Congress. Marco Rubio immediately tweeted the letter he received, because he’s been working diligently to get funding as well. It’s a great story of a large collective group of people who’ve been working diligently.”

Meads said U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-26th District, and U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-18th District in southeast Florida, are working to get both sides of the aisle on board.

“Democrats and Republicans in Florida are working together asking for this money,” she said. “It’s a collection of Democrats and Republicans who are working for a common goal.”

berg, CEO, who said they’re optimistic that the planets may finally be aligning for a sustained, $200 million level of funding.

“This funding level, on a continuous basis, will be sufficient to finally move forward with the Everglades Agricultural Area reservoir and other long-delayed restoration projects,” he said.

More federal funds would complement the state’s investment to accelerate the design and construction of the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP), which will identify and plan for projects on land already in public ownership to allow more water to flow south to the central Everglades, Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. Money will also help with the Everglades Agriculture Area Storage Reservoir to send clean water while reducing damaging discharge events.

Elizabeth Jolin, Florida Bay Forever member and charter captain, said funding in the amount of $200 million is critical to move restoration forward this year and subsequent years. Jolin said this level of funding would support Gov. Ron DeSantis’ aggressive environmental agenda and be a boon for restoration.

“When CEPP was passed in 2000, it was determined that it would take $200 million commitment from the state and feds to get 68 projects done,” Jolin said.

“In all that time, at the federal level, this commitment has only been met once.

About three projects have been actually finished, so this is a big deal.”

DeSantis and U.S. Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio sent a letter in February to the president urging him to include funding in the budget request.

“Everglades restoration is critically important to the state of Florida and enjoys broad bipartisan support in Congress,” Scott said.

T

he Monroe Board of County Commissioners convened at the Harvey Government Center on May 22 to look ahead: at state funding, ecological and water quality issues, and what’s going to happen in 2023.

Report from Tallahassee Rep. Holly Raschein returned from Tallahassee largely victorious and presented wins and losses for the county, including record funding and a victory for home rule.

Raschein complimented new Gov. Ron DeSantis for being a “task master” and passing a $91 billion budget with a historic amount of funding for Monroe County.

Raschein served as vice chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources subcommittee, prioritizing water quality for the Keys.

Victories for policy: Raschein reported that preemption bills that damage home rule did not make it through the legislature, notably the would-be bill disallowing plastic straw bans that Gov. DeSantis struck down. Raschein also commented she was glad to “not have to fight the vacation rental battle again,” though the push and pull isn’t over between state and county on regulating rentals.

“We want to be able to balance needs of our environment, our residents, and also tourists … but when the pendulum swings too much one way, it’s not good public policy,” agreed Commissioner David Rice.

Army Corps of Engineers presentation on storm damage assessment Dan Hughes, planning resources chief for the Army Corps, presented its studies assessing risk management for storm damage.

The measures suggested were: elevation, floodplain management, warning systems, and structural elements like road and shoreline stabilization. He presented maps of roads most vulnerable to storm damage and proposed stabilizing shorelines along the Overseas Highway.

While hardening structures and roads for inevitable storm damage is a priority, the cost would be high. Coldiron called the price tag for proposed changes “astronomical” and asked if the state would approve funding for the projects. Hughes was unable to answer with certainty.

University research plans move ahead A motion passed for University of Miami to measure effects of canal waters on quality of nearshore waters.

The two-year study proposed will cost $497,211 and measure water quality in over 700 locations. It will consider how canals may pollute nearshore waters, carry debris from the land, and how these waters respond to extreme weather events. Despite the price tag, Rice said the study “should put some critical issues to rest.”

She hasn’t missed a day of school since kindergarten. Tara Amador will be attending the University of Florida upon graduation. A student council member and a regular volunteer for the MARC Foundation, Tara hopes to be remembered for being a nice person and treating people with respect. She likes to spend her spare time going boating or fishing. Tara says she hopes to make the Keys her home one day as she’d like to raise a family in the same lifestyle she was fortunate to live in. Tara wants to graduate with a degree from UF, find a career she enjoys and be stress free and happy before her 10-year class reunion.

The son of Thomas and Nicole Kraus, Kyle will be heading to tech school at UTI for auto/diesel mechanics. Kyle says he’ll miss all his teachers and playing lacrosse.

His favorite thing about high school was seeing his brothers in the hallway and around school.

The daughter of Robert Clark and Michelle Chayt, Rachael will be going to Arizona State where she’ll major in secondary education (English). Rachael says she wants to be a high school English teacher, and hopes to come back to the Keys to teach at Coral Shores.

Rachael says she’ll miss all the teachers she had throughout the years who helped shape her into the person she is today. Her best high school memory was junior year when she had the chance to be a part of Miss Coral Shores.

The daughter of Patty and Mark Pacyna, Hailey will be going to school at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. Hailey says she plans eventually to open her own bakery. Hailey says she’ll miss the friends she made over the years.

Her best high school memory is baking in Mrs. McGraw’s culinary class.

Upper Keys teams place high in soccer

A

delegation of 78 represented Monroe County at Special Olympics Florida 2019 Summer Games in various venues, held May 18-19 at ESPN Wide World of Sports. Forty athletes and unified partners competed in unified soccer, unified cheerleading, cycling and bocce.

Coral Shores High School, Key Largo School and Florida Keys Community College were among the Keys schools that took part. This is the largest delegation that has ever attended the Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games. The delegation of coaches, chaperones, partners and athletes, traveled in two tour buses that were funded by various Keys organizations and businesses.

In unified soccer, the Key Largo Tornadoes team received the silver medal. The team consisted of Jericho Lalanne, Zergio Ornelas, Kailee Reinoso, Jenna Castillo, Andrea Barrios, Jourdynn Moises, Caleb Mathis, Connor Dixon and Jessie Lalanne.

“Our Key Largo School Tornadoes went 1-1 with the loss in double overtime, resulting in second place and 10 more silver medals for the Keys,” said Jordan Lombard.

“These guys played their hearts out, executed the adjustments and without a doubt brought some serious competition to state this year. They looked great out there!”

Competing at the state level for the first time, the Coral Shores Hurricanes team placed fourth. The team consisted of Sophia Gonzales, Lucia Rodriguez, Riley Dobson,

Peter Reinoso, Samantha Bailor, Jean-Julian Biadet, Will Mutz, Kailee Stocky, Natalia Gonzales and Jason Castillo.

“Hard training and competing equals succeeding!” said Coach Pedro Reinoso.

Each year, every county director is asked to select an inspirational athlete, partner and coach for the delegation. Coaches are selected from those who are leading their teams to the game; athletes and partners are selected from those competing in the game. These are people who have been observed inspiring their peers throughout the Summer Games training season and who have made it to this level of competition.

Those from Monroe who received recognition were Latara Williams, Keys Cheer head coach; Colin Grossman, Key West High School athlete; and Jenna Castillo, Key Largo School partner. They walked in a recognition parade at opening ceremonies on May 17.

uch of what we throw away in our garbage or put out as yard waste could be recycled right on our own property. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates about 30% of what we discard is food scraps and yard waste – organic materials like banana peels and coffee grounds that, through the help of beneficial critters, turn into nutrient-rich soil.

Composting these materials diverts them from landfills, adding another way we can reduce our carbon footprint. Methane, the byproduct of the decomposition of organic material in landfills, represents 50% of landfill gas; it is 26 times more potent than carbon dioxide and a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emission. Because methane can only be produced in anaerobic (absence of oxygen) conditions, composting offers a far superior alternative, because the microbes that exist in landfills cannot exist in the presence of oxygen.

Composting is the natural

process of decomposition and recycling of organic matter through the aide of beneficial micro- and macroorganisms. Organic matter is composed of living plant roots and the organisms that decompose plant and animal residue in varying stages of decay. Centipedes, millipedes, beetles, earthworms, nematodes, pillbugs and other critters grind and chew material into smaller pieces, while soil fungi and bacteria use enzymes to break down that material chemically.

This process needs green or wet materials, which are rich in nitrogen, and brown or dry materials, which are rich in carbon. The soil organisms function best when these materials are used with the appropriate ratios.

A desirable ratio is 1 part greens to 2-3 parts browns. Some examples for green material are kitchen scraps (excluding meat, dairy, fats or oils), grass clippings, green leaves, and farm animal manure (not pet waste). Brown material includes fallen leaves, twigs or small branches, shredded newspaper or cardboard rolls, paper towels and napkins.

Seaweed is a great addition to a Keys compost pile, since it is high in nitrogen and readily available. It is recommended to rinse the seaweed to

leach salt residue. In Key West, there are also several places that offer free manure (donations welcomed). Key West Mounted Police Patrol volunteers collect the horse manure and process it to be able to be used by the community. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm also offers manure. Both would be excellent additions to the compost pile.

To get started: - Choose a site in your yard that makes it easy for you to maintain your pile, such as close to your garden or near a water source.

- Smaller is better. Chop material into smaller pieces to speed up the decomposition process, especially plants with large leaves like seagrape.

Use a lawn mower to break apart palm fronds, or eliminate them altogether from your pile. Crush egg shells. Often egg shell remnants will remain in finished compost and can be unsightly.

- Turn often. Turning compost will stimulate microbes, add oxygen and help to reduce weed seeds. It will also keep unwanted pests away.

- Do not add dairy, fats, fish, meat, oils or pet waste. These items can attract pests and harbor disease.

SUPER SPELLERS TVM students compete in regionals

pelling bee champions at Treasure Village Montessori competed at the 79th annual Miami Regional Spelling Bee earlier this year.

At the University of Miami, Gabby Gutierrez, fourth grader and elementary school champion, and Pascal Zue Weisberger, seventh grader and middle school champion, competed against 164 other school champions from MiamiDade and Monroe counties. This was TVM's first time competing at the Regional Spelling Bee. After mastering over 450 words to win TVM's school-wide spelling bee, Gabby and Pascal learned an additional 1,150 words for the Miami spelling bee, which included words with Latin, Arabic, German, Slavic, Greek, Japanese and Spanish origins.

The morning competition began with a written test, which consisted of both spelling and vocabulary questions for such words as ephemeral, facetious, Bildungsroman, voortrekker, and glockenspiel. All of the spellers then went on stage for an oral preliminary round.

The scores of both of these were tallied and the group of 166 was whittled down to the top 15. Gutierrez was one of the top 15 finalists and spelled her way with aplomb through six grueling rounds, finishing in a tie for fifth place overall. Weisberger finished in the top 20 and missed the finals by only two points.

After a total of 14 rounds, Rodrigo Medinilla, seventh grader from Pinecrest Preparatory Middle High was crowned the winner. The winning word was ascervation, which, according to Merriam-Web-

t’s arguably one of the more diverse menus you’ll find while dining in the Upper Keys. And when it comes to lobster, they just might have the biggest selection you’ll find.

Located at MM 102, bayside, The Lazy Lobster features 15 lobster house dinner specials. Join host Chef Lupe Ledesma and David Ornelas and enjoy some fresh seafood and Keys-style dishes.

“We carry a great lobster menu,” says Ornelas. “Nobody has that, and it’s been a hit. We offer everything from lobster mac ’n’ cheese, lobster Islamorada to lobster rosada.”

With creamy cheese and scrumptious lobster, the lobster mac ’n’ cheese is a delicious menu option and a must-get while dining at The Lazy Lobster for lunch or dinner. It’s made with sautéed shrimp and scallops in their classic penne mac and cheese, topped with bread crumbs and baked until golden brown.

A few other lobster menu items include the lobster Matecumbe, lobster Atlantis and the lobster Rockefeller, sautéed with shrimp, scallops, spinach, pimentos, bacon and fresh garlic in a pernod wine cream cheese sauce.

Come June 21, the seafood restaurant will enter its third year of business, Ornelas says. Those who’ve frequented Lazy Days in Islamorada, run by David’s brother Luis Ornelas, will notice similar menu items at Lazy Lobster. David Ornelas says the restaurant features a page full of specials every day, and food is top notch when it comes to quality and freshness.

“We feel there’s no competition honestly when it comes to the quality of food we provide,” Ornelas says. “Here at The Lazy Lobster, our expectations are very high. Our thing is we buy local, and we care about the quality.”

young and spry Islamorada mayor in Jim Mooney, and village council, took a moment in January 2001 to recognize the first baby born in incorporated Islamorada. Her name?

Marley Dye. The daughter of Mirine Richey and JP Dye, Islamorada’s first baby will walk across the stage on May 29 to obtain her diploma from Coral Shores. Then it’s on to the University of South Florida in Tampa, where she’ll study business and marketing.

“Out of the schools that I got into, USF was my favorite school that I visited,” Marley says.

While she’s a Keys kid who likes to spend time on the boat, one of her interests is hockey. Having gone to many Tampa Bay Lightning games with her dad, Marley says she’s interested in working with the team, and she’s hoping to obtain an internship with the organization.

here’s a new beer that’s going to support coral research and rehabilitation efforts in the Florida Keys.

On May 17, Florida Keys Brewing Co. in Islamorada officially launched the new brew, “Resistant Strain.” It’s a double hibiscus kolsch, made with local honey, and named in honor of Mote Marine Laboratory’s research to discover disease-resistant coral strains that can be used to re-skin coral reefs.

“Florida Keys Brewing and its staff are all a bunch of fun-loving hippies who want to help protect our reefs,” owner Cheryl McBay said. “We especially love what Mote is doing.

Our reefs are incredibly important, and we will do anything to help protect them.”

Florida’s coral reefs are facing a deadly and rapidly spreading coral disease outbreak, putting them at risk of extinction. Mote scientists are racing against the clock to secure the reefs’ future.

ELUSIVE LIZARD ASIAN WATER MONITOR CAUGHT

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports the capture of this large, invasive Asian water monitor May 15. The lizard, measuring 5 feet 2 inches long and weighing 20 pounds, was captured in Key Largo and removed from the wild thanks to help from staff, volunteers and partners who’ve been setting up traps and searching for the creature. MARINE SCIENCE CAMP

Students to explore natural world

cean Studies Charter School’s Marine Science Camp will bring campers to explore nature around them through kayaking, snorkeling, glass bottom boat adventures, crafts, games

and more.

Through afternoons with Florida International University science students, campers ages 5-12 will learn methods and techniques used by marine biologists, explore STEM careers, and be immersed in the natural world.

This summer, campers will have the opportunity to discover a love for marine life and the environment around them, understand the threats that the world is facing, and be empowered as children to take ownership of their planet, becoming environmental stewards as well as junior scientists.

Summer Marine Science Camp dates are June 10-14; June 17-24; June 24-28 and July 15-19. Cost is $219 a week or $600 for three weeks.

SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES RESULTS OF RANDOM TESTS ON STUDENT ATHLETES

T

hey’re in: the results of the Monroe County School District’s one-year trial of random drug testing for student athletes. The district tested a total of 246 high school students and found 11 positive results — mostly marijuana.

The report to the school board also attempted to quantify levels of change in students’ involvements in sports; in other words, knowing that they could be tested, how many students elected not to participate in sports. Marathon High School and Coral Shores High School said the number of student athletes stayed about the same compared to last year. Key West High School reported 96 fewer students. Both Coral Shores and Key West said fluctuations in specific rosters (baseball or football, for example), were due to changes in management of the athletic programs rather than due to the drug testing.

The trial aimed to test 15% of the total roster for each sports season — fall, winter and spring. Students participating in varsity and junior varsity sports, as well as band, cheerleading and dance teams, were tested. Students were assigned numbers, and then randomly selected by a “random number generator.”

Here’s what the school board thinks: BOBBY HIGHSMITH DISTRICT 1

I am satisfied that the new testing program corrects many of the egregious elements of the prior testing regime. I am pleased that there were relatively few positive tests. My personal belief is that the results of this trial indicate that we don’t have a great need for this type of random, suspicion-less testing, and I would prefer that we not continue it. However, I understand that a majority of our principals, athletic directors and coaches, whose opinion I greatly respect, would like to see the program continue. I would be willing to support its continued implementation if the program is expanded to cover all students who are legally eligible to be tested. I don’t think it’s fair to single out our student-athletes for this type of highly offensive and invasive testing when there is no evidence that this group of students is more likely to use drugs than any other group of students.

ANDY GRIFFITHS DISTRICT 2 On this particular subject, I really give a lot of influence from the high school leaders. I know they want to do the best for their students, and make sure they are safe.

And they are all telling me they want this.

A very low percentage tested positive, so that’s good news. Until I hear anything to the contrary, I will continue to support it.

MINDY CONN DISTRICT 3 I’m pleased that so few tested positive and that there were students who made the choice to not take drugs as a direct result of the policy. Also, with staff, high school administration and the community wanting to continue the program, I would support their decision. However, I do believe it’s something that requires an annual review to ensure it continues to have support and effectiveness.

JOHN DICK DISTRICT 4 I asked the question ‘Do the principals and athletic directors want to continue the program?’ and received an emphatic yes. They are on board, so that’s my driving force.

I don’t want to take that tool away from them. Two years ago, some students told me they didn’t want to smoke pot, because they might be tested. It’s hard to say how many students are affected in this way. But even if it’s a couple, it’s worth it to me.

SUE WOLTANSKI DISTRICT 5 I was not in favor of random drug testing because I have concerns about the repercussions of a false positive test on a child. And I had concerns about how to keep that information confidential. I don’t think there were any false positives, but I don’t think there was any privacy for students. I don’t believe that the data shows long-term impacts from programs like this, but there might be short-term value to it. I’m on the fence, I guess.

AFRO ROOTS RETURNS Concert series returns to Morada Way

T

he annual Afro Roots Fest concert series returns to the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District in Islamorada during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The lineup will feature an eclectic roster with some familiar faces on Sunday, May 26 at 151 Morada Way, beginning at 3 p.m. All ages are welcome; a $10 donation is suggested.

“We’re excited to be back in lovely Islamorada and are especially thankful to our wonderful partners and sponsors, the Florida Keys Brewing Company,” said Jose Elias, festival founder and executive director of Community Arts and Culture.

“We look forward to honoring the ultimate sacrifices made by the members of the U.S. Armed Forces with a day of incredible music in a stunningly beautiful setting.”

Elias will also play the tres and guitar with the Spam Allstars. A Latin Grammy-nominated and nationally and internationally-touring band, the Spam Allstars are one of Miami’s most popular, well-known, longest-running and accomplished bands. Part Afro-Cuban, part hip-hop, part funk, part electronica, the band was founded by musician, producer, and musicologist Andrew Yeomanson, AKA DJ Le Spam. The group’s latest recorded effort, “Trans-Oceanic,” was released in 2016.

Grupo Barrio Abajo seeks to raise international awareness of the folkloric musical heritage of the Caribbean Colombia by presenting styles such as cumbia, bullerengue, porro, chandé and more than 30 other unparalleled musical rhythms.

Globally, their home country is known for cumbia and vallenato, but these are just two parts of their musical heritage. Barrio Abajo performed during the 2018 Afro Roots Fest.

Morikeba Kouyate is a native of Senegal and an Afro Roots Fest repeat performer. He is a Kora master – the 21-string harp-like instrument – and a trained Griot, part of the tradition of West African oral history through song.

Dave Feder fuses his background of jazz and classical music with Flamenco folk stylings and a multi-cultural island vibe. His music has been featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered, World Café Live, PBS ArtLoft, NPR’s Folk & Acoustic Music, among other outlets. Feder spent six weeks at the top of the Broadjam World Music Chart with his critically acclaimed album “Black Emerald” and has been featured on “All My Children” (ABC), “Art Loft” (PBS), the NBC Good Morning show, National Park Service educational videos, and Florida Everglades documentaries.

ODE TO EMANCIPATION BOOK USHERS ENERGY INTO NEW ECONOMY

A

world-renowned scholar, cited author of the now 41-year-old timeless book that completely re-imagined and re-calibrated the ontological and existential coordinates of freedom, and professor emeritus of philosophy from the University of Michigan, Frithjof Bergmann, is set to release his newest and unusually timely book — “New Work New Culture: Work We Want and a Culture That Strengthens Us.” Bergmann’s book takes aim at what he calls “the Job-Business-Nexus” — by sifting through his historically sensitive remonstrations of the current “job system,” and by proposing an architecturally refined alternative which is both serious and cheerful.

“Maintaining cheerfulness in the midst of a gloomy affair, fraught with immeasurable responsibility, is no small feat; and yet what is needed more than cheerfulness?”

Published by Zero Books (an imprint of British publisher John Hunt Publishing Ltd.), the book is updated and translated from his original German edition and available to the English-speaking world for the first time on July 1. “New Work New Culture” proves that the useful and timeless elements of philosophic thought can be taken into the field like a physical tool, applied on the ground like a real process, and pragmatically shared with the rest of the world’s people whose daily and inescapably philosophical task is to get on with the primary business of living life — or, in Bergmann’s terms, living a vibrant and cheerful life.

Bergmann is the founder and chairman of the Center for New Work and New Work Enterprises, with offices and projects in seven countries on four continents.

The book also offers an autobiographical subtext which traces the previous 35 consecutive years of his tireless thought and work on the meaning and structure of work; of what he has famously coined as “New Work.”

Bergmann, a philosophical anthropologist, lays out in his book the reasoning for, the history behind, and the foundational blueprinting of not only his diagnosis of what he calls “the pathology of the job system,” but more significantly his alternative solutions to the dysfunctional, destructive, and debilitating components of that system which have been illegitimately central to its overall function whatsoever.

In this 343-page volume, Bergmann does not just help readers along the journey toward how to, for themselves, entirely re-think the “Job-Business-Nexus,” but also emphasizes to readers that “there is an alternative” to our two-centuries-old “job system.” Freedom and work are not mutually exclusive, but are intertwined to the counter-intuitive point where any dialectical opposition between them becomes logically impossible; that our existing but still untapped societal mechanisms, cultural institutions, and political apparatuses and potentials have already long been sufficiently capable of advancing the surrounding conditions in the worlds of work up to newer, more efficient, more sensible, more productive, and far more humane and cheerful heights (and away from the outdated “job-creation” model of thinking which has overstayed its welcome a long time ago anyway). The distinction between “jobs” and “work” is not simply semantic, but is cognitive, concrete and perhaps even borderline sublime. Hence, Bergmann’s book stresses — with specific attention paid to globalization, automation, migration, and de-centralization — that there is an alternative to how we have been disastrously organizing work and workflows into meaningless, “spirit-breaking jobs.” New Work’s purpose, Bergmann writes, is to make this alternative “as visible as a great streak of light.”

Bergmann’s highly creative use of similes and metaphors, as well as his use of verbs in the simple future tense throughout his book, are not just bold and contagious, they are restorative and inspirational: such linguistic elegance clearly demonstrates the author’s gifted capacity for actual vision, or of always thinking in terms of positive solutions toward a brighter and more uplifting future for all.

The point is, it doesn’t matter whether you are a person working in professional academia, or a worker or layperson from any field of expertise that faces either unemployment, underemployment, or perhaps worse yet still, daily overemployment with scant fruit to show for it. Bergmann’s book is positively readable for all levels on any spectrum. One quite possibly could even read Bergmann’s entire exposition as an innovative invitation to wake up cheerfully to this life rather than, as Bergmann writes, “sleep through the entire journey, and only wake when the conductor cries: Final Stop!

This train ends here!”

arah Brawer discusses impacts and strategies to cope: Everyone who lived here during Hurricane Irma was impacted in some way. Whether your home went seemingly unscathed or you lost everything, the extent of damage and destruction caused by this storm was different than anything experienced by most. Almost everyone was able to get out of the path of the storm. The shock was coming back after the danger had passed.

Despite it all, our tough little community cleaned up and began restoring “normal� life.

But the long-term effects of this storm cannot be ignored. In many ways we have become inured to the new “normal.� Whether it is getting used to dead foliage, a new home or the daily stress of an on-going fight with insurance, we adapt to the changes. But these changes also bring along wear and tear of chronic stress.

In Monroe County, anecdotal evidence shows an increased rate of suicide and suicide attempts, increased substance use, an increased divorce rate and increased physical illness since Irma landed in 2017. These are all classic effects of the chronic stress associated with a natural disaster.

So how do we cope?

It is essential to acknowledge that this is a normal reaction to an abnormal set of circumstances. Then we

can start doing things like increasing our self-care — taking walks, making extra time to spend with your friends, enjoying the water, even taking a break off the rock can help recharge the batteries. If you are going to live through a stressful incident, self-care helps us with a long-haul win.

When the impact of stress becomes overwhelming, counseling can help. Finding a therapist to work with allows for reprocessing, development of cognitive skills and resolution of thoughts or images that continue after the storm.

The Florida Keys TRN was developed in response to Hurricane Irma.

The Humanitarian Aid Project trained 12 therapists from Key West to Key Largo in a treatment technique called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) – a treatment specialized in resolving the psychological effects of trauma. The Florida Keys TRN is now available for anyone struggling with emotional effects in the aftermath of the storm.

INSTRUCTIONAL TRAINING Championship team gives back

M

embers of Coral Shores’ South Florida Conference Championship softball team recently conducted a four-hour instructional softball clinic for young ladies in the Upper Keys.

“This was the first of what will become an annual event,” said ’Canes Head Coach Lesa Bonee.

“The Upper Keys Foundation helps to take care of some of our team’s financial needs with the caveat that we tutor our players on how to give back to their community. We’ve been involved in several other team service projects and our players have enjoyed each. I asked my team about other ideas for helping out and they came up with the clinic concept.”

Bonee, whose championship team finished 17-1 this year, added, “The UKF uses the slogan, ‘Everybody Wins.’ I think this clinic is a perfect example of what they mean by that statement.”

“One of the ‘wider vision’ goals of the UKF is to train the next generation of public servants,” said Athletic Director Rich Russell.

“Coach Bonee’s efforts could well inspire her players to go on to become effective youth coaches or umpires. I talked to several of our players and they really enjoyed the time they spent instructing and encouraging the young girls who attended. One comment that resonated was, ‘I sure wish this was around when I was their age.’”

ILLEGAL DUMPING A GROWING PROBLEM

I

t is illegal and can be a felony to dump household appliances, construction materials, boats, trailers, RVs and vegetative debris on county-owned vacant land and county rights-of-way and streets.

This fiscal year, there has been an increase of 227 tons of illegally dumped debris – 87 percent more than the year before Hurricane Irma. The extra disposal cost is paid by Monroe County taxpayers.

“The illegally dumped debris affects our quality of life, wildlife and marine habitats,” said Cheryl Sullivan, Monroe County director of solid waste. “It is a growing issue since Hurricane Irma and we need to discourage this type of behavior.”

Putting residential Hurricane Irma debris on the side of roads for pickup as part of the County’s recovery efforts ended more than a year ago. The county is working on curtailing dumping at hot spots, possibly by adding surveillance to the areas.

Household appliances – beds, dressers, appliances, carpeting, etc. – can be removed by local haulers at no cost to the resident.
