he city commission met May 21 to discuss several issues, including the forefront of sustainability efforts (“What are we doing about sea levels rising?” asked Commissioner Jimmy Weekley), and retread contentious and well-trod ground with restaurateur Joe Walsh about his Mallory Square restaurant project. Much to the mayor’s frustration, it was a lot of talk and a little action.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT The Sustainability Advisory Board Report was presented by Monica Haskell. The commission discussed benefits of switching over to LED lights at fields like those at Truman Waterfront 1B. Weekley queried about the staff’s sea level plans, noting Islamorada as a good comparison.

noted the upcoming Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact meeting and the plans, which will result in local projections.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN PLAN Newly minted “bike czar” Tim Staub presented details, including construction projects, for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. Staub talked about bike hubs dotting the city, standardizing bike racks and adding lights and other traffic enhancement at accident-prone locations like Kennedy Drive. The hot-button concerns? Bike shares and personal electric vehicles.

Staub described the goals of the bike share program as “community and Conch friendly” (rather than littering our already-crowded streets with rental bikes). The Sustainability Committee is also looking at car share RFPs. HEALTH DEPARTMENT REPORT With national measles outbreaks in the news, Department of Health Administrator Bob Eadie reported, in short: “We don’t have one.” He did, however, acknowledge that if one person in the room had measles, it would easily spread, a prescient concern on an island like ours. Almost eradicated in 2000, measles rates are rising because of (parents of) children who haven’t been immunized. Religious exemptions still exist for vaccinations.

“You have a big issue if you have a disease that was practically eliminated and because of false science, we now have a thousand cases,” said Eadie. He also reported the department is assessing mental health status post-Hurricane Irma to look at suicide increase and prevention.

‘YOU CAN GET BETTER AT ANYTHING’ ROMPELLA JUST GETTING STARTED

“Education is not one-size-fits-all”

S

chool’s out for summer, but Tom Rompella is just getting started. Rompella is the principal of Somerset Island Prep, aka Key West Collegiate Academy, a local high school that offer students the chance to earn industry certifications and take free college courses. He’s proud of the new direction the school has taken to create more tailored educational experiences for Keys students. Rompella said the school is “the culmination of 8 years of discussions with local families and community members.

Those discussions resulted in three conclusions about education. College tuition is an excessive burden to families; young people are not learning enough workforce skills; and education is not onesize-fits-all for students.”

Rompella grew up in a small town north of the Windy City called Antioch, Illinois. After being awarded a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University and master’s from Nova Southeastern University, he was ready to move south. Once he hit Key West in 2011 (and prior to helming Somerset Island Prep), Rompella briefly worked with the Boys and Girls Club and May Sands Montessori school. He’s passionate about working with youth and has been from the start; the former camp counselor took his first teaching job at a local middle school after his college graduation. Since, he’s won awards like “Teacher of the Year” and graduated from Leadership Florida’s Leadership in Education Program. Fortunately for the Key West educational community, he also always knew he wanted to live on an island. “I always told my friends I was going to move to an island as soon as I graduated college. I don’t think they ever took me seriously. I was serious.”

I am still finding notes that were hidden in various books from the class of 2016.

Do you have a standard line of advice for high school students?

You can get better at anything with practice: dribbling a basketball, algebra, managing stress and being happy are skills that involve hard work and practice to improve.

What was your favorite subject in school? Physics; we made a flame organ. I still keep in contact with my teacher.

What do you like most about life in the Keys? People take the time to invest in each other. Our diverse community allows learning opportunities from people of all walks of life.

What’s on your bucket list? Write a book, start a business, and postretirement, I want to teach at a university in Europe.

How does Somerset Island Prep differ from other schools?

We are one of the only schools in Florida that has all students earn free college credits in their first semester of high school. We expedite graduation requirements so that students can take advantage of our partnership with Doral College; they can earn a free AA degree alongside their high school diploma and hone workforce skills.

Have you endured any good senior pranks? Yes, even enjoyed.

I tell students a good prank is unique, thoughtful and, above all else, safe. After four years of prepping students for adulthood I trust them to make clean and mature judgments come graduation time.

Whom do you most admire?

Teachers! Good ones can change the world.

What are three things you couldn’t live without? The science teacher in me says oxygen, water and food. The realist in me says sushi, my electric bike and back massages.

Did you ever get detention?

Skip school? C’mon on... spill it...

Never skipped school once, not for senior skip day, nor when my physics class went to Six Flags and I was too afraid of roller coasters so I was the only one that showed up to class. As for detentions, some things are best left to the imagination.

What’s your favorite Saturday activity? Walking around Old Town early in the morning with a cup of black Cuban coffee. There is always great energy in the air.

Take out or cook at home? Take out. My love for food exceeds my ability to cook it.

Any secret talents? Not sure it is a secret, but being a Dungeon Master in Dungeons & Dragons does not come up much in conversation.

What’s the biggest change coming for the school next year? It’s a brand new program! The largest change is that we revamped the schedule to allow 9th graders to get their graduation requirements done right off the bat. That way their schedule’s open so they focus on getting skills, certifications and college credits in areas they are passionate about.

What’s Principal Rompella going to do on his summer vacation?

When you live where others vacation you don’t have to change your routine much. Yoga on the beach in the morning, prepare for the upcoming school year during the day and spend time with friends in the evening. Sounds like paradise to me.

Favorite beach read? Depends on the mood. “The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World” if I need inspiration or “The Singularity Trap” to daydream.

Any pets? The day my landlord allows them, I love dogs. I used to have a hedgehog named Ling-Ling.

Finish these sentences: My friends and family would describe me as … adaptable, positive and sincere.

alter C. Maloney, Sr. was born in Georgia on Feb. 7, 1813. He would grow up, move to the West Indies, and by the latter half of the 1830s be living on Indian Key with his first wife.

Maloney and his family would move to Key West in the days prior to the August 7, 1840 attack at Indian Key during the Seminole War. He would serve as Key West’s mayor from 1846 to 1848 and later work as a lawyer.

Maloney would also enter Florida’s state legislature.

His son, Walter Jr., would marry Euphemia Bartlum on May 22, 1867.

Euphemia’s name would later appear in a story from the Key West Citizen dated May 21, 1907 that read, “The title to a valuable tract of land on Stock Island has passed from Mrs. Euphemia Maloney to the promoters of the Florida Keys Land Company. As soon as the survey is made and the lines given, several acres of land will be put on the market and an effort will be made to develop it at once.

The town to be located there has already been named Flagler, after Florida’s great benefactor. The plans of the company will be made public in a few days.”

arah Brawer discusses impacts and strategies to cope: Everyone who lived here during Hurricane Irma was impacted in some way. Whether your home went seemingly unscathed or you lost everything, the extent of damage and destruction caused by this storm was different than anything experienced by most. Almost everyone was able to get out of the path of the storm. The shock was coming back after the danger had passed.

Despite it all, our tough little community cleaned up and began restoring “normal” life.

But the long-term effects of this storm cannot be ignored. In many ways we have become inured to the new “normal.” Whether it is getting used to dead foliage, a new home or the daily stress of an on-going fight with insurance, we adapt to the changes. But these changes also bring along wear and tear of chronic stress.

In Monroe County, anecdotal evidence shows an increased rate of suicide and suicide attempts, increased substance use, an increased divorce rate and increased physical illness since Irma landed in 2017. These are all classic effects of the chronic stress associated with a natural disaster.

So how do we cope?

It is essential to acknowledge that this is a normal reaction to an abnormal set of circumstances. Then we

can start doing things like increasing our self-care — taking walks, making extra time to spend with your friends, enjoying the water, even taking a break off the rock can help recharge the batteries. If you are going to live through a stressful incident, self-care helps us with a long-haul win.

When the impact of stress becomes overwhelming, counseling can help. Finding a therapist to work with allows for reprocessing, development of cognitive skills and resolution of thoughts or images that continue after the storm.

The Florida Keys TRN was developed in response to Hurricane Irma.

The Humanitarian Aid Project trained 12 therapists from Key West to Key Largo in a treatment technique called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) – a treatment specialized in resolving the psychological effects of trauma. The Florida Keys TRN is now available for anyone struggling with emotional effects in the aftermath of the storm.

BOCC CONVENES IN KEY WEST COUNTY TALKS STATE FUNDING, WATER

T

he Monroe Board of County Commissioners convened at the Harvey Government Center on May 22 to look ahead: at state funding, ecological and water quality issues, and what’s going to happen in 2023. The meeting kicked off with a brief airport report from Director of Airports Richard Strickland and Marathon Airport Manager T.J. Henderson. Henderson is leaving the Keys for sunnier (just kidding) skies in California, and the commission wished him well. The 13 items on the agenda pertaining to the airports were bulk approvals, and Strickland promised more to come with improvements and expansion.

REPORT FROM TALLAHASSEE Rep. Holly Raschein returned from Tallahassee largely victorious and presented wins and losses for the county, including record funding and a victory for home rule.

BUDGET WINS FOR MONROE Raschein complimented new Gov. Ron DeSantis for being a “task master” and passing a $91 billion budget with a historic amount of funding for Monroe County. Raschein served as vice chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources subcommittee, prioritizing water quality for the Keys. The county was awarded another $6 million under the Florida Keys Environmental Stewardship Act, including spending for water quality projects, combatting red tide and toxic algae blooms and coral restoration projects.

Victories for policy: Raschein reported that preemption bills that damage home rule did not make it through the legislature, notably the would-be bill disallowing plastic straw bans that Gov. DeSantis struck down. Raschein also commented she was glad to “not have to fight the vacation rental battle again,” though the push and pull isn’t over between state and county on regulating rentals.

“We want to be able to balance needs of our environment, our residents, and also tourists … but when the pendulum swings too much one way, it’s not good public policy,” agreed Commissioner David Rice.

STALLED BILLS: 50/50, INSURANCE CAP The Keys didn’t get much movement on the 50/50 liability bill that would force the state to share expenses for the litigation that will surely follow when the state ceases to grant new development rights to property owners in 2023. The county — with Raschein at the helm — wants the state to agree to bear 50% of the burden. Commissioner Michelle Coldiron impressed upon Raschien how critical the 50/50 bill is for the next session, as it is her last term.

Raschein said she was committed to introducing the bill and “shepherding it through the House.”

The other bitter pill? That the 5% cap on Citizens Property Insurance didn’t pass. Raschein did not get critical support from Speaker of the House Richard Corcoran. Insurance rates — for wind in particular — will continue to rise.

“It’s a challenge educating my colleagues on what it means to be an area of critical concern,” she said.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTIONS Presentations on storm damage, water quality and sea level rise dominated the latter half of the morning session, with the same refrain: consequence vs. cost: Army Corps of Engineers presentation on storm damage assessment Dan Hughes, planning resources chief for the Army Corps, presented its studies assessing risk management for storm damage. The

measures suggested were: elevation, floodplain management, warning systems, and structural elements like road and shoreline stabilization. He presented maps of roads most vulnerable to storm damage and proposed stabilizing shorelines along the Overseas Highway.

While hardening structures and roads for inevitable storm damage is a priority, the cost would be high. Coldiron called the price tag for proposed changes “astronomical” and asked if the state would approve funding for the projects. Hughes was unable to answer with certainty.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH PLANS MOVE AHEAD A motion passed for University of Miami to measure effects of canal waters on quality of nearshore waters. The two-year study proposed will cost $497,211 and measure water quality in over 700 locations. It will consider how canals may pollute nearshore waters, carry debris from the land, and how these waters respond to extreme weather events. Despite the price tag, Rice said the study “should put some critical issues to rest.”

A NOAA grant also enabled Jason Evans of Stetson University to do modeling on 50,000 properties to gather data on flood risk in the Keys. They also created a water management plan to pursue improving the county’s Community Rating System score. The key question posed by the commission was: At what point is the government responsible for flooding and storm damage, and when is mother nature responsible?

FUNDING, FINALLY? PRESIDENT SUPPORTS $200 MILLION FOR EVERGLADES JIM McCARTHY

letter by South Florida Water Management District board members to U.S. Congress for Everglades funding was answered as seen within the president’s budget proposal, and more recently, approval by the House Appropriations Committee.

On May 10, the SFWMD governing board issued a letter to the U.S. House’s Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, and Chairwoman Marcy Kaptur, related appropriations subcommittees in the U.S. House and fellow representatives. The letter also went to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development.

Within the letter, board members urged support for the highest possible funding for the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration line items, as well as $200 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restore the Everglades.

“There is strong bipartisan support for restoring America’s Everglades, and this world-renowned ecosystem depends on a sustained $200 million in annual federal funding for restoration,” the SFWMD letter reads.

Three days later, President Donald Trump changed his budget proposal, increasing Everglades funding from $63 million to the requested $200 million.

Taking to Twitter, Trump says Congress needs to help complete the world’s largest intergovernmental watershed restoration project, he said.

“Good for Florida and good for the environment,” he said.

On May 21, the House Appropriations Committee gave approval to the energy and water appropriations bill, which was amended to include the $200 million in funding for Everglades restoration. It will now go before the full U.S. House.

Cheryl Meads, SFWMD at-large board member, says she’s optimistic Congress will approve the funding needed to restore the Everglades. As for the letter to Congress that the SFWMD board sent, Meads said she reached out to the district’s communications staff to put something together. Executive Director Drew Bartlett felt a letter signed by all board members would be more effective.

“At the last board meeting that we had, all the letters were prepared, and we all read and signed them,” Meads said. “Our communications director and our executive director made sure it went to every member of Congress. Marco Rubio immediately tweeted the letter he received, because he’s been working diligently to get funding as well. It’s a great story of a large collective group of people who’ve been working diligently.”

Meads said U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-26th District, and U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-18th District in southeast Florida, are working to get both sides of the aisle on board.

“Democrats and Republicans in Florida are working together asking for this money,” she said. “It’s a collection of Democrats and Republicans who are working for a common goal.”

The president’s support for Everglades funding was met with praise from The Everglades Foundation and Eric Eikenberg, CEO, who said they’re optimistic that the planets may finally be aligning for a sustained, $200 million level of funding.

“This funding level, on a continuous basis, will be sufficient to finally move forward with the Everglades Agricultural Area reservoir and other long-delayed restoration projects,” he said.

More federal funds would complement the state’s investment to accelerate the design and construction of the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP), which will identify and plan for projects on land already in public ownership to allow more water to flow south to the central Everglades, Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. Money will also help with the Everglades Agriculture Area Storage Reservoir to send clean water while reducing damaging discharge events.

Elizabeth Jolin, Florida Bay Forever member and charter captain, said funding in the amount of $200 million is critical to move restoration forward this year and subsequent years. Jolin said this level of funding would support Gov. Ron DeSantis’ aggressive environmental agenda and be a boon for restoration.

“When CEPP was passed in 2000, it was determined that it would take $200 million commitment from the state and feds to get 68 projects done,” Jolin said.

“In all that time, at the federal level, this commitment has only been met once.

About three projects have been actually finished, so this is a big deal.”

DeSantis and U.S. Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio sent a letter in February to the president urging him to include funding in the budget request.

“Everglades restoration is critically important to the state of Florida and enjoys broad bipartisan support in Congress,” Scott said.

o matter where you live, you’re never far away from news and discussions on autism. Even if we just conDr. Stanley Sack sidered recent publications, there’s so much written that in order to discuss it all, we would need the newsprint real estate of all of this paper, our sister papers, and probably most of the Welcome Center brochures. So today, what I’ve chosen to do is look at a few issues about the condition that have garnered some press in recent months. We’ll examine: 1) how many are thought to have autism and 2) at what age can it be diagnosed. And along the way, we’ll explain why you should take a speech pathologist out to lunch.

In order to come up with figures for autism, it’s important to know what we’re counting — and that’s changed in recent years. Instead of “just” autism, we now talk about autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). One good description of ASD comes from the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.” Importantly, this definition has lumped in a few other diagnoses such as Asperger syndrome.

Now to the numbers. The CDC has been tracking them and, just last month, published its latest report. They’re creeping up just a little: in 2010, 1.3% of 4-year-olds (the age they most closely studied) had the condition. In 2014, it was 1.7%. Overall, that’s about 1 in 59 kids.

Certainly, in the long run, there’s been an increase in the diagnosis. Why? Most of the researchers cite a couple of reasons.

First, many people diagnosed with ASD have been thought to have other diagnoses, such as ADHD, learning disability, or even the now

antiquated term “mental retardation” (currently referred to as “intellectual disability”). ASD can certainly co-exist with any of these, but it’s important to make all applicable diagnoses for the best treatment.

Second, more kids are being screened at an earlier age: the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening at 18 and 24 months. And just a few weeks ago, researchers published a study that found the diagnosis in little ones even earlier—as young as 12 months of age. Finally, although there’s no definitive evidence of a link to anything in the environment causing the increase, investigators keep looking.

While we’re waiting for more answers, it’s still important to be aware of the condition and to look for clues. Before the age of formal screening, infants and toddlers may show clues such as a failure to maintain eye contact, a failure to respond to familiar voices, or a lack of interest in early social games like “pat-a-cake.” Failure to have any words by a year and a half or a loss of speech can also raise concern for the condition.

None of these means a child has ASD, but it’s worth having testing in more detail. Early intervention (EI) services can provide some testing. Although the EI program is approved nationwide and is free, testing is subject to availability of the specialists. For example, we have not always had a speech pathologist in Key West. (I’ve been trying for years to get a speech pathologist friend to move down here. If you see her, she seems to go for Italian food!) Even if testing means a trip to the mainland, it’s important to get it done. It’s been shown that the earlier ASD (or just about any other issue affecting child development) is suspected, the more effective treatment generally is. So — don’t hesitate to make that drive! And stay tuned, because something is always happening on the autism front.

shelter location. The city has agreed to the 30 unit affordable housing project for sheriff’s employees, as part of an agreement to keep KOTS in the same location.

MALLORY SQUARE Restaurateur Joe Walsh has been in a 9-year-plus battle with the city over the stipulations of his proposed project in Mallory Square.

Weekley introduced a resolution to cease lease negotiations with Walsh’s Tropical Soup Corporation and effectively halt the project.

Walsh objected. The resolution failed.

GLYPHOSATE BAN In the vein of the oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreen ingredient ban, the city has been moved to consider the carcinogenic qualities of glyphosate, a chemical contained in RoundUp. Miami Beach has banned the herbicide, suspected to play a role in the toxic algae bloom.

RoundUp is used by the city and private residents for invasive weed removal. Veliz reported that while RoundUp is good at killing weeds, “If it’s something that is harmful, then we can use something else.”

Commissioner Sam Kaufman applauded the city for banning other harmful chemicals, citing how our municipality has led to continued research and legislation on state and federal levels. The commission unanimously passed a resolution directing the city manager to move forward with a ban.

arathon’s Rachel Bowman was personally recruited to take a spot on the “Florida Man” team for this past weekend’s Emerald Coast Open, formerly the Lionfish World Tournament.

“I was the Florida Ma’am of the Florida Man team,” Bowman said, laughing. She joined brothers Joe and Josh Livingston of Destin, Florida, and John McCain of High Springs, Florida so they could recreate their win of 2018.

She replaced Alex Fogg, who stepped down to run the tournament, the biggest of its kind. Bowman and her team collected 2,241 fish on 87 dives in two days to win.

“The tournament is good for the environment, and good for tourism in our area,” said Fogg, who describes his full-time job as part marine research and part tourism cheerleader, under the auspices of Okaloosa County. This is the fourth year of the tournament and it attracted 187 divers from seven states. Divers netted almost 20,000 lionfish, big and small.

“This was a really successful year,” he said.

“These are really big numbers,” said Bowman. “This is unheard of.”

The tournament had two parts.

The first was a four-month long collection of lionfish so local restaurants would have enough of the fish to serve divers attending the tournament. That was about 5,000 fish.

And then the two-day tournament brought in the other 14,000 fish.

All of those fish were sold to Whole Foods, and divers were compensated $4 a pound for small lionfish, and $6.25 for big fish.

So, is it working? Are humans able to stop or slow the lionfish invasion?

Lionfish are the scourge of the seas. Although native to the tropical waters of the South Pacific, the venomous (not poisonous!) fish found its way to the U.S. about two decades ago, where there are no natural predators to this fast-reproducing and voracious fish. More than 120 different prey fish have been found in the bellies of the beast, and they can eat other fish that are as big as half their size. Snapper, grouper, the ornamental parrotfish and even baby lobster are no match for this fish, found in abundance in the Florida Keys.

Even more terrifying: a female lionfish can lay 5 million eggs in one year.

“I think humans have made a small dent in the situation,” Fogg said, “but there are other things in play. Nature has a tendency to figure this out.”

He said divers in the panhandle used to average 50 fish a dive; now the number is lower, sometimes in the single digits. Fogg attributes the decline in lionfish to a number of factors — Hurricane Michael, red tide, and perhaps some unknown pathogen. While the lionfish had no known predators in U.S. and Caribbean waters, they may be susceptible to a disease that leaves native populations untouched.

Still, Fogg said, the lionfish fight isn’t over. Tournaments like the Emerald Coast Open are important because they remove lionfish from the waters and continue to raise awareness.

Bowman is very committed to the cause.

“Tournaments get won because of extremely hard work, but none of this would have been possible without the amazing support of our family, friends, colleagues and employers,” she said. “The sponsorship of Keys Fisheries and Dive Rite, a scuba company out of Lake City, is also very important.”

MOONEY IS ALL IN FOR DISTRICT 120 LONGTIME RESIDENT, COUNCILMAN TO RUN FOR STATE REP

H

e was 99 percent sure last year about a run for state representative with current Rep. Holly Raschein terming out in 2020.

Last week, IslamoJim Mooney rada native and current councilman Jim Mooney finalized that decision. He’s 100 percent in.

It was a year and a half ago when Mooney heard from others that he should pursue Raschein’s seat. Thinking long and hard about a potential run, Mooney, a Republican, says he also heard from some people in Monroe County he highly respects who told him to go for it.

“I was like, yeah we’ll see,” Mooney said in a recent sit-down with the Weekly. “Then there’s the moment where you go, shoot, have I lost my mind? And what if I’m going to spend the summer somewhere else? Then I thought, ‘Yeah, I’m not going anywhere.’”

Mooney is well attuned to the government scene, having served as mayor and councilman of the village for a number of years. He’s also visited Tallahassee on several occasions for Keys Day, witnessing the basic interworking of it all. Mooney said he could have served one more term on the village dais. The decision to forgo that wasn’t easy, he says.

“I spoke to my daughter and my son and my fiancée, and the village and Roget (Bryan) and Seth (Lawless),” Mooney said. “I asked them point blank where would I better serve the village and the Keys. And they said Tallahassee. I hate just walking away from things when you still have more time available.”

Growing up in the Keys, Mooney is very well familiar with the issues — water quality especially having been around it since he was a kid. Mooney says water quality and building a resilient Florida Keys is everything at the end of the day.

“We know it can be done,” Mooney says.

“My philosophy is every step taken is a positive step.”

Mooney admits that filling Raschein’s shoes wouldn’t be easy. He said she’s been inspirational and “a super rock star.”

“She’s so well respected up there,” he said. “She worked for Ron Saunders, a Democrat. She worked for Ken Sorensen.

She earned her spot, and those are two really good guys who worked hard to take care of the southern district. Holly earned it all.”

Mooney says he believes he can bring continued knowledge of the Keys to Tallahassee. And having watched session before at the state capitol, he notes that it’s a much bigger arena.

“I don’t mean that from workload or numbers of people, but everybody’s fighting for the slice of the pie,” he said. “We’re District 120, and we have tons of needs that other districts maybe don’t. It’s going to be a delicate balance act how you get what you want and help them get what they want, and hope you can meet somewhere in the middle.”

Mooney says if he’s fortunate enough to win, he feels he can get the job done.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m excited about it. Of course, I got to win,” Mooney said. “I have good support down here. The Florida Keys is my home, and Islamorada is my home.”

TRAUMA STAR CREWS PREPARED FOR IN-FLIGHT TRANSFUSIONS

M

onroe County Trauma Star is advancing prehospital trauma resuscitation by adding in-flight blood transfusions for the most critically injured patients.

Trauma Star flight crews arriving at emergency scenes, in many cases, find a patient has lost a life-threatening amount of blood. Until recently, restoring blood loss in flight was limited to saline solutions, which will not restore the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood in the body. One Blood is providing the O-negative blood for Trauma Star that can be used universally in any needed recipient.

“Every second counts between arrival at the scene and treatment at a trauma center,” said Monroe County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief of Operations Steve Hudson. “This essential advancement is innovative and will provide better outcomes for some of our most critical patients.”

A February 2018 article in The Journal of Emergency Medicine said trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals under 46 years old, and uncontrolled bleeding remains the number one cause of preventable injury death.

“The addition of blood on the helicopter gives the flight crew a tremendous tool for the stabilization of injured or ill patients,” said Chief Trauma Star Flight Nurse Lynda Rusinowski.

“By carrying the products on board, it allows the patient to receive a treatment that ordinarily would not be available until arrival at the specialty hospital.”

In rural areas, the role of blood transfusion is even more critical because of the distance to trauma centers. The flight time from Lower Keys Medical Center to the three closest trauma centers, Kendall Regional Trauma Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital South, and Jackson Ryder Trauma Center, is 50 to 55 minutes.

ILLEGAL DUMPING A GROWING PROBLEM

t is illegal and can be a felony to dump household appliances, construction materials, boats, trailers, RVs and vegetative debris on county-owned vacant land and county rights-of-way and streets.

This fiscal year, there has been an increase of 227 tons of illegally dumped debris – 87 percent more than the year before Hurricane Irma. The extra disposal cost is paid

by Monroe County taxpayers.

“The illegally dumped debris affects our quality of life, wildlife and marine habitats,” said Cheryl Sullivan, Monroe County director of solid waste. “It is a growing issue since Hurricane Irma and we need to discourage this type of behavior.”

Putting residential Hurricane Irma debris on the side of roads for pickup as part of the County’s recovery efforts ended more than a year ago. The county is working on curtailing dumping at hot spots, possibly by adding surveillance to the areas.

HOW TO KILL YOUR NEIGHBOR WITH KEY LIME PIE

on’t waste time with arsenic or hemlock next time you feel like killing a neighbor. You can get the same results serving them a tart, delicious slice of Key lime pie.

David Sloan Just make sure to include raw eggs like Grandma used to do.

Eggs have long been a key ingredient in Key lime pie. We believe sponge fisherman used pelican, turtle and wild bird eggs in some of the earliest versions of the dessert, and nearly every recipe I’ve seen published up until the start of the 21st century includes eggs. No-bake recipes, often called “ice box pies” before modern refrigeration was introduced, were popular in the South because they were simple to make and didn’t involve using a hot oven in the summer heat. The recipes used raw eggs and nobody was getting sick from them, but that was then, this is now. Things started to change with the spread of Salmonella enteritidis from the chicken to the chicken’s egg.

Simply put, salmonella is a bacterium that makes people sick. According to a 2010 New York Times article, it mysteriously began to appear in chicken eggs in many countries at about the same time in the late 1970s. People infected with the bacterium usually experience fever, stomach cramps and frequent trips to the bathroom for four to seven days. In most cases, people recover without treatment, but in some instances the bathroom part can be so severe that the patient requires hospitalization. If you are really old, really young, or have an impaired

immune system, salmonellosis can kill you.

I discuss eggs with local home bakers in the Florida Keys more than I care to admit, and two arguments that often come up in favor of raw eggs in Key lime pie are: 1) the acidity of the limes kills all the bacteria, and 2) “I’ve been putting raw eggs in my pies my entire life and I’ve never been sick.” Chad Bailey is the Florida Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence Liaison with the Florida Department of Health, so I reached out to him to see what our risks really are.

According to Bailey, acid from Key limes does have antimicrobial properties, just not in sufficient strength to kill all bacterial pathogens. Acidic lime juice is unfavorable to the growth of most microbes, though it doesn’t kill them directly.

He further explains that the USDA does not recommend eating raw shell eggs that are not cooked or undercooked, since there is a possibility that salmonella bacteria may be present. The internal temperature of any cooked product using raw eggs, including meringue, should reach 160°F. As an alternative, pasteurized egg products can be substituted in no-bake recipes such as Key lime pie.

Bailey provided the Florida Morbidity Statistics Report showing 6,557 salmonella cases in our state in 2017. Of those cases, 1,680 people were hospitalized, and 32 people died. Morbidity rates in Monroe County were higher than

state averages, and 38 salmonella cases were reported in the Florida Keys.

So what does it all mean? The chances of killing someone by serving raw eggs in Key lime pie are slim, but it is entirely possible, especially if an infected egg is consumed by the elderly, infants, or those with compromised immune systems. Salmonella risks are easily eliminated with heat or pasteurized egg products and a little effort can go a long way. The bottom line is that staying true to a family tradition is admirable, but when it comes to raw eggs, it’s simply not worth the risk. Grandma will forgive you.

Besides, who wants to be remembered as the person who killed their neighbor with a slice of Key lime pie?

CUBAN AMBASSADOR VISITS KEY WEST SARAH THOMAS

ose Marti came to Key West in May of 1883, having established a relationship with the Cuban leaders of the community who were eager to support Cuba’s bid for independence. The revolutionary addressed the town from the second-floor balcony of the stately home owned by cigar manufacturer Teodoro Perez. Marti spoke passionately about Cuba’s bid for independence from Spain, seeking support for his cause — the political, cultural and intellectual independence of Cuba and the rest of Latin America.

While his tour spanned larger U.S. cities, the Cuban community of Key West remained close to Marti’s heart, which he regarded with “tenderness, just pride, and gratefulness.” It was the heyday of the cigar industry, and Cuban influence was writ large in “Cayo Hueso.”

Last week, on May 14, Cuban Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Ramon Cabañas stood on that very balcony — now the popular inn and restaurant La Te Da — addressing a lively crowd, greeted by Key West businesspeople and officials including Mayor Teri Johnston. Cabañas said he was visiting our city in an effort to strengthen the relationship and the cultural exchange between Key West and Cuba. He also said his goal was to invite 500 people from Key West to attend the celebrations in the capital city of Havana this year.

The number 500 is deliberate: the Cuban capital city will celebrate its 500th anniversary this year. In November, Havana will host festivities including open concerts, green initiatives, and rebuilding and repairing projects to properly appoint the city for her birthday. This year marks many firsts for Cuba, including the March visit of British royals Prince Charles and Camilla Duchess of Cornwall to the city — the first members of the royal family ever to visit the island nation.

Besides Havana’s big birthday, why the whirlwind PR push now?

Cuba seems to be on the cusp of international reconsideration, coming out of the shadows of the Castro regime — though still operating under the model of Marxist communism. Massive paintings of Fidel Castro adorn the capital, and the language of nationalist pro-

paganda papers the newsstands. Yet the world stage is taking notice of diplomatic gestures like the ambassador’s visit to Key West.

When Ambassador Cabañas took his position in 2015, after many years in Cuba’s Foreign Service, he became the first Cuban ambassador to the U.S. in the last 50 years. Cabañas took the position during the Obama administration, which took an interest in normalizing relations.

In 2015, President Obama — the first U.S. president to visit Cuba since 1928 — met with then Cuban President Raul Castro to negotiate the “thaw” of the Cold War relationship between the two countries. Trade restrictions were lightened, if not lifted, as was travel for U.S. citizens.

Obama restored “people to people” travel cards, allowing U.S. citizens to visit for cultural, recreational or educational purposes.

Ambassador Cabañas appeared to be making a bid for — and participating in—this very type of travel while in Key West. Cabañas, his wife Edilia, and Counselor Rodney Gonzales Maestrey were invited and escorted by former City Commissioner Tony Yaniz, as well as founder of the Conch Republic Independence Festival and owner of 801 Bourbon Bar, Jim Gilleran. Yaniz and Gilleran led the ambassador through a tour of the cultural landmarks of Key West.

Gilleran credits Yaniz as the catalyst for the visit but was thrilled to be on board.

“My personal belief is that we can learn a lot more by engaging with Cuba than not. And the historic ties between Key West and Cuba are huge,” he said.

Key West author David Sloan took the visiting group on a trolley tour with Commissioner Clayton Lopez and Michael Morawski, CEO of the Hemingway House. The tour covered topics and sites like Marti’s addresses on Duval Street, the historical and economic significance of the cigar industry, the record-breaking crossings of the Florida Straits by Diana Nyad, Sonny McCoy and Paul Menta — whose Key West Legal Rum Distillery hosted the ambassador for a taste of the favorite Cuban spirit. Good thing, as beloved Cuban Havana Club rum isn’t available for consumption in the States, as it is still traderestricted by the U.S.

Menta focused on commonality over shared spirits, saying “Rum is an international language and is something we all agree on,” and calling the visit from the ambassador an “honor.”

Sloan took a similar approach. “I broke the ice talking about the Beatles and finished by explaining our One Human Family philosophy,” he said. “They are two things that bring people together every time.” He also pointed out the need to be friendly to our Southern neighbors, as Cuba is, in his words, “closer than Walmart.”

Key Westers overall embraced the visit as an opportunity to share our local treasures and way of life with the visiting dignitaries. Cabañas responded in like manner. He and Maestrey said that they were in Key West not only to celebrate the long-standing ties between the two islands but also to learn from the Keys’ tourism industry. On a private tour of the Hemingway House Cabañas and Morawski discussed how to further develop the relationship between the Key West property and Finca Vigia, Hemingway’s property outside of Havana, Cuba.

At the Hemingway House, Ambassador Cabañas queried as how to cross-promote the two attractions and create an “exhibit exchange.” Cabañas’s team took notes, exchanged contact info with officials and businessmen and women in Key West, and brainstormed ways to better connect the two cities in the interest of shared benefit.

“There are so many reasons for the people here to visit Cuba,” Cabañas said. “We are celebrating the 500-year anniversary of Havana. We have multiple galleries and concerts. Finca Vigia has beautiful memorabilia and artifacts.” While Finca Vigia is not centrally controlled by one tour company — in the way the Hemingway House is — Maestrey and Cabañas discussed how they might streamline tourism to Finca and maximize profit and quality of experience.

Representatives of the property have already worked closely with the Hemingway Foundation in Boston.

4 the most broadly interpreted and used for non-official business) works well, Cabanas said simply: “For us, it does. For some people in your government … not so much.”

Indeed, when President Trump entered office, he announced that he was “cancelling” the loosened stipulations of the new relationship, though the changes have been slow. While tourism to Cuba still exists, Trump reversed Obama’s enactment of people-to-people visas, threatening violators with 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. In late April, Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton announced that the Department of the Treasury would implement further regulatory changes to restrict nonfamily travel to Cuba. “These new measures will help steer Americans’ dollars away from the Cuban regime,” Bolton said.

While Cuba has, in the Castros’ wake, elected President Miguel Diaz Canel, the political and cultural environment has, from afar, remained largely unchanged: poverty, prostitution, media censorship and centralized governmental control remain. The philosophies and realities of those in the United States vs. Cuba remain very different. But it seems Cabañas, and the people of Key West, have an eye for closing, or at least shortening, the gap and finding common ground.

Locals like Jim Gilleran already support this mission through his travel agency, Amiga Travel, which arranges tailored visits to Cuba from Key West. Amiga focuses on cultural enrichment and exchange. OKW, or Our Key West, founded by Robin Smith Martin, offers day trips to Cuba, and also offers education through

5 themes like The Hemingway Excursion. At least anecdotally, it seems like more Key Westers have visited Cuba than the rest of the states combined.

“Havana is our sister city,” said Smith-Martin. “People forget that Key West was Spanish before it became part of America, and I hope we can continue and improve the dialogue between our two cities.”

Cruise ships, of course, dock at ports in Key West and Havana as well—it’s the means of travel Hemingway chose when he first arrived in Key West from Havana with wife Pauline, destined to buy the house on Whitehead Street (and destined to return to Cuba). It seems that, on land and sea, through literature like Hemingway’s “Islands in the Stream” and Marti’s revolutionary poetry, our two islands will continue to enjoy a close relationship. Closer, if diplomatic efforts like those of Cabañas have anything to do with it.

While the ambassador didn’t announce when he was returning, he did invite everyone to Havana’s birthday party. It seems like some may be in attendance—or at least cheering from our Southernmost shores.

“There is a tremendous amount of camaraderie and working together that will result from that visit,” said Commissioner Lopez at the May 21 city commission meeting. Commissioner Kaufman added: “The connection our city will have with Havana for economic and cultural exchange is exciting.” Jim Gilleran is even working on erecting a marker in Cuba that says “90 miles to Cayo Hueso.”

Viva la relationship.

Traveling to Cuba by air isn’t that complicated either. Just book a ticket through a major airline and follow their travel instructions by securing a tourist card. Be sure the category selection accurately represents the purposes of the trip—and you can prove it if pressed to upon return.

SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES RESULTS OF RANDOM TESTS ON STUDENT ATHLETES

T

hey’re in: the results of the Monroe County School District’s one-year trial of random drug testing for student athletes. The district tested a total of 246 high school students and found 11 positive results — mostly marijuana.

The report to the school board also attempted to quantify levels of change in students’ involvements in sports; in other words, knowing that they could be tested, how many students elected not to participate in sports. Marathon High School and Coral Shores High School said the number of student athletes stayed about the same compared to last year. Key West High School reported 96 fewer students. Both Coral Shores and Key West said fluctuations in specific rosters (baseball or football, for example), were due to changes in management of the athletic programs rather than due to the drug testing.

The trial aimed to test 15% of the total roster for each sports season — fall, winter and spring. Students participating in varsity and junior varsity sports, as well as band, cheerleading and dance teams, were tested. Students were assigned numbers, and then randomly selected by a “random number generator.”

Here’s what the school board thinks: BOBBY HIGHSMITH DISTRICT 1

I am satisfied that the new testing program corrects many of the egregious elements of the prior testing regime. I am pleased that there were relatively few positive tests. My personal belief is that the results of this trial indicate that we don’t have a great need for this type of random, suspicion-less testing, and I would prefer that we not continue it. However, I understand that a majority of our principals, athletic directors and coaches, whose opinion I greatly respect, would like to see the program continue. I would be willing to support its continued implementation if the program is expanded to cover all students who are legally eligible to be tested. I don’t think it’s fair to single out our student-athletes for this type of highly offensive and invasive testing when there is no evidence that this group of students is more likely to use drugs than any other group of students.

ANDY GRIFFITHS DISTRICT 2 On this particular subject, I really give a lot of influence from the high school leaders. I know they want to do the best for their students, and make sure they are safe.

And they are all telling me they want this.

A very low percentage tested positive, so that’s good news. Until I hear anything to the contrary, I will continue to support it.

MINDY CONN DISTRICT 3 I’m pleased that so few tested positive and that there were students who made the choice to not take drugs as a direct result of the policy. Also, with staff, high school administration and the community wanting to continue the program, I would support their decision. However, I do believe it’s something that requires an annual review to ensure it continues to have support and effectiveness.

JOHN DICK DISTRICT 4 I asked the question ‘Do the principals and athletic directors want to continue the program?’ and received an emphatic yes. They are on board, so that’s my driving force.

I don’t want to take that tool away from them. Two years ago, some students told me they didn’t want to smoke pot, because they might be tested. It’s hard to say how many students are affected in this way. But even if it’s a couple, it’s worth it to me.

SUE WOLTANSKI DISTRICT 5 I was not in favor of random drug testing because I have concerns about the repercussions of a false positive test on a child. And I had concerns about how to keep that information confidential. I don’t think there were any false positives, but I don’t think there was any privacy for students. I don’t believe that the data shows long-term impacts from programs like this, but there might be short-term value to it. I’m on the fence, I guess.

t’s a big hometown win for Key West students. Verity Pond, Finn Pond and Chase Floyd, who together make the “Big Brains,” are all students at Key West Collegiate Academy, and they won the state financial fitness competition for the League of Southeastern Credit Unions. The Big Brains are sponsored by the Keys Weekly (ahem).

The students haven’t just won cash, but knowledge. Chase Floyd attests to how much practice has been crucial, and Verity Pond cites learning about keeping financial documents and avoiding identity theft as key takeaways. They should be ahead of the pack, economically — a significant portion of their semester has been spent practicing for and playing the game, with questions spanning from how to improve one’s credit score to what factors affect life insurance.

Keys Federal Credit Union, in conjunction with the League of Southeastern Credit Unions, has been hosting student competitions throughout the spring to test student knowledge

and promote financial literacy.

After taking the regional title April 8 for $1,500 in cash, the team went on to win state April 26, winning $3,000. The team will travel to Orlando for the regional tournament on June 21, where another $3,000 is at stake for the first place winders ($1,500 and $900 go to second and third place, respectively).

The JW Marriott will host, and the Big Brains will compete with teams from other states in the Southeast. Juli Lewis, the league representative, will conduct the tournament.

“They need to be able to survive after they get out of high school,” said Mary Lou Carn, director of strategic development for Keys FCU, who has seen the team through local, Keys-wide and state tournaments. “They have to able to pay bills,” she said. “If they are going to college, they are going to have to know how to make a budget. If they stay in town, the more financially savvy they are, the better chance they’ll have of being able to live in the Keys and be able to sustain a Keys existence without having to leave.”

here’s a new beer that’s going to support coral research and rehabilitation efforts in the Florida Keys.

On May 17, Florida Keys Brewing Co. in Islamorada officially launched the new brew, “Resistant Strain.” It’s a double hibiscus kolsch, made with local honey, and named in honor of Mote Marine Laboratory’s research to discover disease-resistant coral strains that can be used to re-skin coral reefs.

“Florida Keys Brewing and its staff are all a bunch of fun-loving hippies who want to help protect our reefs,” owner Cheryl McBay said. “We especially love what Mote is doing.

Our reefs are incredibly important, and we will do anything to help protect them.”

Florida’s coral reefs are facing a deadly and rapidly spreading coral disease outbreak, putting them at risk of extinction. Mote scientists are racing against the clock to secure the reefs’ future.

Born and raised in Islamorada, McBay grew up snorkeling, fishing and enjoying the beautiful reefs. Now that she has kids, she hopes they have the same amazing experience that she had.

I’ve never been one to spoil the fun with clichés such as: “But let’s not forget what this day is all about.” In fact, Memorial Day weekend, in essence, is the appropriate time to enjoy the freedoms and luxuries that so many died to preserve for us, as well as future generations.

With this in mind, I’m sure most reasonable Americans will pause and pay their respects to fallen family members, friends and other heroes at some point over the weekend. But let us not forget that Memorial Day is a moment for us all to memorialize.

In today’s political climate, it has become increasingly convenient to exploit meaningful traditions and holidays to

serve personal agendas. All too often, a simple post on social media that pays tribute to our fallen heroes takes a dark and divisive turn into comments debating our leadership, political party rhetoric and the morality of wars.

Memorial Day does not consider the leaders (nor their reasons or political agendas) who sent young men and women into harm’s way. Instead, the day stands to remember young boys and girls who left their homes and towns in America, never to return and raise families of their own, drop their little boy off at his first day at kindergarten or give their daughter away on her wedding day.

From the American Revolutionary War to the men and women who are currently serving in hostile territories across the globe, those who sacrificed their lives for this nation share a duty. Their duty did not ask why. They simply served their nation and sacrificed their most precious of gifts.

This Memorial Day let us all put aside our political affiliations and agendas and memorialize the men and women who never had a chance to see the fruits of their sacrifice. Enjoy a cold beer at the sandbar or pool. Crank some music up.

And do it all for the fallen heroes who preserved your right to do so. And hopefully, do it with a whisper of gratitude that resonates throughout the weekend.

ODE TO EMANCIPATION BOOK USHERS ENERGY INTO NEW ECONOMY

A

world-renowned scholar, cited author of the now 41-year-old timeless book that completely re-imagined and re-calibrated the ontological and existential coordinates of freedom, and professor emeritus of philosophy from the University of Michigan, Frithjof Bergmann, is set to release his newest and unusually timely book — “New Work New Culture: Work We Want and a Culture That Strengthens Us.” Bergmann’s book takes aim at what he calls “the Job-Business-Nexus” — by sifting through his historically sensitive remonstrations of the current “job system,” and by proposing an architecturally refined alternative which is both serious and cheerful.

Published by Zero Books (an imprint of British publisher John Hunt Publishing Ltd.), the book is updated and translated from his original German edition and available to the English-speaking world for the first time on July 1. “New Work New Culture” proves that the useful and timeless elements of philosophic thought can be taken into the field like a physical tool, applied on the ground like a real process, and pragmatically shared with the rest of the world’s people whose daily and inescapably philosophical task is to get on with the primary business of living life — or, in Bergmann’s terms, living a vibrant and cheerful life.

Bergmann is the founder and chairman of the Center for New Work and New Work Enterprises, with offices and projects in seven countries on four continents.

The book also offers an autobiographical subtext which traces the previous 35 consecutive years of his tireless thought and work on the meaning and structure of work; of what he has famously coined as “New Work.”

Bergmann, a philosophical anthropologist, lays out in his book the reasoning for, the history behind, and the foundational blueprinting of not only his diagnosis of what he calls “the pathology of the job system,” but more significantly his alternative solutions to the dysfunctional, destructive, and debilitating components of that system which have been illegitimately central to its overall function whatsoever.

In this 343-page volume, Bergmann does not just help readers along the journey toward how to, for themselves, entirely re-think the “Job-Business-Nexus,” but also emphasizes to readers that “there is an alternative” to our two-centuries-old “job system.” Freedom and work are not mutually exclusive, but are intertwined to the counter-intuitive point where any dialectical opposition between them becomes logically impossible; that our existing but still untapped societal mechanisms, cultural institutions, and political apparatuses and potentials have already long been sufficiently capable of advancing the surrounding conditions in the worlds of work up to newer, more efficient, more sensible, more productive, and far more humane and cheerful heights (and away from the outdated “job-creation” model of thinking which has overstayed its welcome a long time ago anyway). The distinction between “jobs” and “work” is not simply semantic, but is cognitive, concrete and perhaps even borderline sublime. Hence, Bergmann’s book stresses — with specific attention paid to globalization, automation, migration, and de-centralization — that there is an alternative to how we have been disastrously organizing work and workflows into meaningless, “spirit-breaking jobs.” New Work’s purpose, Bergmann writes, is to make this alternative “as visible as a great streak of light.”

Bergmann’s highly creative use of similes and metaphors, as well as his use of verbs in the simple future tense throughout his book, are not just bold and contagious, they are restorative and inspirational: such linguistic elegance clearly demonstrates the author’s gifted capacity for actual vision, or of always thinking in terms of positive solutions toward a brighter and more uplifting future for all.

The point is, it doesn’t matter whether you are a person working in professional academia, or a worker or layperson from any field of expertise that faces either unemployment, underemployment, or perhaps worse yet still, daily overemployment with scant fruit to show for it. Bergmann’s book is positively readable for all levels on any spectrum. One quite possibly could even read Bergmann’s entire exposition as an innovative invitation to wake up cheerfully to this life rather than, as Bergmann writes, “sleep through the entire journey, and only wake when the conductor cries: Final Stop!

This train ends here!”

IDS Help of Monroe County (AH) will be providing important sexual health and wellness outreach while shifting into the campaign to bolster participation in The SMART Ride 16.

On Friday night, June 7, 2015 Fantasy Fest Queen Jodyrae Campbell will again present “Real Men Do Drag,” where burly meets curly and boots are traded for bras.

The competition, from 6 to 8 p.m. at AQUA nightclub, 711 Duval, will be hosted by Elle Taylor and emceed by Laurie Thibaud.

“I won’t promise pretty, and I can’t guarantee poise,” said Scott Pridgen, executive director of AH, “but I can assure attendees of plus-sized laughter.”

Tips and other proceeds will equally assist the local Key West Mile Markers team for The SMART Ride 16 (TSR) and the other Florida agencies participating in TSR: AH, Pridelines, Broward House, Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Metro Wellness and Community Centers, Miracle of Love Inc. and Compass Community Center.

“We work handlebar-tohandlebar with TSR management and the other ASOs to remind this state that there is still neither vaccine nor cure for HIV and AIDS,” said Pridgen.

Key West Mile Markers team riders past and present will discuss the 165-mile journey from Miami to Key West, enlisting not just riders, but also crew and supporters.

KEY WEST TO HOST STOLI VODKA’S LGBTQ BARTENDER COMPETITION FINALS

T

he Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic’s grand finale week will bring regional winners from LGBTQ bars in 14 North American cities to Key West to compete to create an original Key West cocktail that embodies the island’s spirit and diverse culture.

The final rounds of the national bartender challenge are scheduled Wednesday through Sunday, June 5-9, coinciding with the Key West Pride celebration. Presented in partnership with the Key West Business Guild, events will feature regional winners from the U.S. and Canada.

“The Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic is now in its sixth year as the world’s most comprehensive annual touring LGBTQ bartender celebration and competition,” said Patrik Gallineaux, event producer and LGBTQ ambassador for Stoli Group, USA. “One of the most exciting parts of it is that the ‘finish line’ is a full week spent in the magical island community of Key West celebrating the Southernmost ‘Pride’ in the U.S.,” Gallineaux said.

The cocktail classic has awarded $55,000 to past champions to donate to their chosen hometown charities and partnered nonprofits in Key West. The 2019 winners will award their designated charities a total of $25,000.

Key West Pride and the Stoli Classic will hold a kick-off gala at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Key West’s Island House Resort. The all-

welcome festivities feature a meetand-greet with Stoli contestants and celebrity judges.

The first elimination round will be Thursday, June 6, at Aqua Night Club, and round two is set for Friday, June 7, at the 801 Bourbon Bar. Featuring multiple “bar stars” battling for spots in the final round, each round will be preceded by blind samplings at 5 p.m., with audiences voting for their favorite libations.

Saturday’s final round is planned for 7:30 p.m. on an outdoor stage adjacent to the Bourbon Street Pub Complex. Gallineaux will host, accompanied by “Real Housewives of Dallas” star LeeAnne Locken.

Celebrity performers and contest judges include comedy writer and actor Bruce Vilanch, recording artist Debby Holiday, former “American Idol” finalist LaToya London, South Florida cabaret favorite Jennifer McClain and Key West female impersonator Sushi. Event organizers said the judging panel might also feature a surprise celebrity.

Festivities culminate in the 2019 Pride Parade led by the Stoli winner.

Slated to begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 9, the procession will proceed up Duval Street from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean.

Following the parade, participants can attend Stoli’s official afterparty and check presentation of $5,000 each to the first- and secondplace winners’ designated Key West charities at La Te Da. — Contributed

“We have a really good work environment,” she said. “We have great co-workers and it’s nice to be able to work with my family, versus working with strangers.”

FAMILY OPENS NEW SQUARE GROUPER IN ISLAMORADA

W

hat’s better than two joints? Three.

With Square Grouper Bar & Grill and My New Joint 420 Lounge on Cudjoe Key, owner Lynn Bell opened the popular Square Grouper restaurant at the Islamorada Marina, MM 80.4 bayside, on March 1. Converting an old boathouse into an elegant, waterfront dining destination, Square Grouper is all about fresh, local seafood, some of the finest craft cocktails, a fantastic wine selection and top-notch service.

Running the restaurant alongside Lynn are son and daughter, Joe and Sarah. Both grew up in the business, having worked at Square Grouper Bar & Grill at MM 22.5, Oceanside, on Cudjoe Key since Joe was 9 years old and Sarah was 8.

Now, at 24 and 23, Joe and Sarah are bringing a lot of knowledge and experience to the new Islamorada joint.

“It’s probably the biggest compliment that I could ever have,” Lynn said. “Having them working with me, even though they’ve gone away and done their college, and

open a restaurant with me is like a dream. They bring a lot of knowledge and they know what’s expected of them. It’s great to have them bring that experience to this staff.”

From busing tables to hosting and serving, Joe worked every position in the business before leaving for college in New York. He initially went for real estate, and he did an internship in New York City.

But he wasn’t one to work behind a desk. He got back into the restaurant business, spending time at an establishment outside Chicago and later as general manager for a Fort Lauderdale restaurant.

Joe now serves as general manager of Square Grouper in Islamorada. He said he’s working to ensure the experience is similar to the Cudjoe joint that’s had a great track record.

“It’s one of the most successful restaurants in the Keys for the past 16 years,” he said. “Making sure it’s very similar is important to me. If a guest goes down to Cudjoe and is coming to have dinner here, making sure, for instance, that the seafood stew tastes the same is important.”

Sarah decided to attend massage therapy school where she became a massage therapist. She returned to the family business at Square Grouper when the Islamorada venue was ready to open its doors.

‘That sells great,” he said. “It’s fresh oysters using our homemade Key lime butter sauce.”

You won’t go wrong by starting out with the delicious seafood stew. Or, try the yellowfin tuna and avocado egg rolls with Asian dipping sauce.

For the main entrée, go for the almond encrusted grouper that comes with a warm Caribbean cranberry-pineapple relish.

It’s served over house-made sweet potato mash.

“She (my mom) likes to classify it as a tropical Thanksgiving of sorts,” Joe said.

As for a drink, do yourself a favor and go for the house signature cocktail Key lime martini.

Square Grouper is a lunch destination Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Appetizers, soups, salads, tacos and seafood platters are among the afternoon menu items. There are also house specialties like the Square Grouper sandwich, pan sautéed and topped with house onion rings and Key lime tarter, as well as the chicken sandwich, Philly cheesesteak and B.L.T., just to name a few.

Dinner goes from 5 to 10 p.m.
