The number of rivers that contain freshwater shrimp testing positive for traces of cocaine in the U.K. A study, published in the journal Environmental International, also revealed the presence of ketamine, pesticides and anti-depressant drugs.

This isn’t the first time — eels living in the Thames River have also tested positive for cocaine, and another study in Seattle found mussels with traces of oxycodone.

n May 8, several Upper Keys representatives took the annual trek up north to Washington, D.C. where they’ll meet and speak with federal officials regarding funding for Everglades restoration and reimbursement from FEMA. Islamorada Vice Mayor Mike Forster and fellow councilmen Jim Mooney and Ken Davis are among the group who made the trek north to Washington, D.C. Marathon and Key Largo officials also made the trip. Local officials will look to speak with the Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA officials and stop by U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell’s office.

The visit by Keys representatives to the nation’s capital comes just two months after environmentalists and U.S. House and Senate members criticized the White House budget for not including enough funds for Everglades restoration.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida called on President Trump to provide $200 million a year. Trump’s proposal showed $63.3 million for Everglades work.

Mooney says he’ll be looking to discuss continued — or even more — support for the Everglades.

“We’ll be working for money to help the continued purchase of land,” he said.

Davis says the federal government, following Hurricane Irma, gave the Keys $100 million to pull debris and clean up the canals. But they haven’t allowed money to be used to address the sand and silt issue.

“There’s $43 million from the $100 million that’s not being used right now,” he said. “We might as well redirect and reopen that money up to all means necessary.”

Forster said the trip’s topics will likely include FEMA reimbursement as well as funding for Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and the Central Everglades Planning Project.

BRIEFLY May program highlights concrete ‘Red Cross’ houses

Business owners invited to complete survey

Basket weaving class returns to Islamorada

The Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys’ May program will feature a slideshow presentation covering the who, what, when, where and why of the construction of the concrete “Red Cross” houses in the Upper Keys, given by society President Jerry Wilkinson.

The program will be Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the Key Largo Library Community Room, MM 101.5, in the Tradewinds Shopping Plaza. Admission is free. More information is available from Wilkinson at 305-896-6526.

Monroe County, in partnership with the Chambers of Commerce in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and the Lower Keys, is inviting current and former business owners to complete a short survey. The survey results will identify additional actions to support the recovery of businesses and communitywide economic redevelopment.

As much as $40 million may be available to support economic recovery in the Florida Keys. The business survey will gather information about how the business community is recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Irma and what business recovery needs still exist.

The survey is available until May 27 at www.monroecounty-fl. gov/2019businesssurvey. It should take about 10 minutes to complete the 23-question survey.

The results of the survey will be discussed at a business and tourism recovery workshop, tentatively scheduled for June 3 in Marathon.

The workshop will be held to develop strategies for recovery and to preview the numerous state and federal assistance programs available for business owners. More information is available from local chambers of commerce or at www.monroecounty-fl.gov/hurricaneirma.

Accomplished artisan Robin Forte is coming back to Islamorada Library to teach basket weaving classes on Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The class will cover weaving pine needle baskets using the ancient techniques of the Seminoles. A onetime material fee of $20 will cover all basket supplies. It generally takes two classes to make one basket. Registration is available at the front desk or by phone, 305-664-4645. The class limit is 12 students.

FWC announces final deadline for derelict vessel removal funds The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is announcing the opportunity for state, county, municipal and other authorized governmental entities to apply for derelict vessel removal grants. The third application period for the bulk derelict vessel removal grant program began May 6 and ends on June 19 at 5 p.m. Applications received after June 19 will not be eligible for consideration for round three.

Total funding available to state, county and city governments allocated for derelict vessel removal for fiscal year 2018-19 is $1 million. Funds for removal of derelict vessels that meet the requirements may be applied for at any time during this opportunity period. Applications will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until all available funds have been expended.

Applicants should call the FWC Boating and Waterways Section at 850-6179540 to determine available funding before mailing or emailing an application.

Glow in the dark party for kids Islamorada Library is drumming up excitement for the summer reading program, "A Universe of Stories," which starts June 1. A free children's event with an outer-space theme will be held at the library on Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m. with a viewing of the 1977 classic film "Star Wars," with a glowin-the-dark party beforehand. There will be fresh popcorn, beverages and glow-in-the-dark giveaways, all with a black-light backdrop.

Health Department seeks help with community assessment The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County is conducting a community assessment to understand the health needs of county residents postHurricane Irma and needs volunteers to help. The community assessment will take place on May 21, May 22 and May 23 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Volunteers can sign up to work only one day, two days, or all three.

Each volunteer will be paired with a Florida Department of Health worker to go door-to-door in designated areas to ask Monroe County residents questions on how Hurricane Irma has affected their lives and their health.

The community assessment is being divided into two sections, the Upper Keys and Lower Keys, and volunteers can choose which area to work. The department will have two headquarters (Islamorada and Key West) where volunteers will begin and end their day. Water and snacks will be provided. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Library hosts acrylic painting class Local artist Pam Gode will teach students how to make a small acrylic painting at Islamorada Library on Friday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The materials fee is $10. by Maxine Trainer Islamorada Library offers stained glass classes, taught by local artist Maxine Trainer. Students will design, create, and take home their own small piece of stained glass. A one-time material fee of $75 will cover all supplies.

he name Islamorada is not as old as some people claim, nor does it have anything to do with purple water or purple snails or the purple bracts of the bougainvillea.

Had the original 15-acre town site on Upper Matecumbe Key been named Islamorado, there might be an argument in favor of the purple mythology associated with Islamorada.

A May 7, 1907 newspaper story read, “A New Town Springs Into Life …On the north end of Upper Metacombe Key a new town known as Isle Morada has sprung into existence. It is an ideal spot on the Key West Extension and has a fine water front on the bay side. The civil engineers engaged on the extension took an interest in the location, purchased the surrounding land and laid it out into town lots.”

The wife of William Krome – one of those engineers – told Mal Flanders, a reporter for the Keynoter, in a story dated May 10, 1965, “I was not a member of the family at that time and had no part in the selecting of the name, but Mr. Krome told me that it was derived from the Spanish isla or island and morada, meaning home.”

Event supports Upper Keys Humane Society It was quite the Kentucky Derby Party on May 4 at Ziggie & Mad Dog’s in Islamorada to benefit the Upper Keys Humane Society. The event brought good food while “Laughing” Bob dished out the drinks. The evening also featured the famous “Best Hat” contest with 20-plus participants. Emceeing the contest and party events — as he has since the early 2000s — was Capt. Skip Bradeen, who noted this year’s turnout was the biggest yet.

“Every year it gets bigger and bigger,” he said. Angie Boem, president of the Upper Keys Humane Society board, said the society couldn’t do it without the community’s support. Funds generated from the event and other fundraisers stay locally with the UKHS. Galin Prince, general manager at Ziggie & Mad Dog’s, said it’s a fun event for a great cause.

‘BETTER TOGETHER’ Forster looking to bring ‘magic in the middle’ JIM McCARTHY

t’s 4 a.m. on a Monday, and Mike Forster is awake, to prepare some food for the teachers at Plantation Key School for Teacher Appreciation week. After that, it’s off to Mangrove Mike’s Café where it’s bustling with hungry patrons.

When he gets a moment away from the café, catering and civic engagements, Forster is out and about, speaking with residents from Key West to Key Largo on some of the major issues they’re dealing with today.

“I still have that fire and passion to keep serving,” Forster said during a recent sit-down with the Weekly.

Forster, who’s in his final term as Islamorada councilman, officially filed for Board of County Commissioners’ District 5 seat on March 12, 2018. He said he filed after current district representative and mayor Sylvia Murphy announced her retirement.

Forster’s the only one who’s filed for the seat so far.

“There’s no losing in running for the seat,” Forster said.

“The worst thing is I lose, and it’s all good because I formed new relationships throughout the county and met great people. The point of running, for me, is engaging with as many taxpayers as I possibly can to see what they’re passionate about.”

In recent weeks, Forster has been traveling up and down the Keys to attend Rotary and chamber meetings and speak with residents and community leaders. Though each key is unique, Forster says the islands share some of the same issues from affordable housing and water quality to Citizen’s insurance rates and traffic.

“I look at the bridges here in the Keys as arteries. We’re all connected,” Forster says. “For me, I want to educate myself on what residents want moving forward. For example, some areas want affordable housing and some don’t. And Citizens’ insurance rates; we all share that, and we all share the fact that we want home rule and we want to get rid of preemption.”

But there are differences, too, on what the people want.

“As I went south to Big Pine Key, I heard that they don’t want growth,” he continued. “They want to keep it the old Keys. That’s the curb appeal before you get into Stock Island. I see where Marathon is coming into their own with great leadership from Chuck Lindsey, who’s doing a great job following policy with council.”

As an Islamorada councilman since 2003, Forster says he’s stayed accessible to the public while helping them get their situations and issues over to village management and staff to handle. As for policy, Forster says he likes to see what other municipalities in Monroe County are doing to see if it’s worth replicating.

Mike Forster’s nirvana? It’s fishing at Everglades National Park.

Forster says it’s the only place he fishes. “It’s not all about fishing, although it’s my passion,” he says.

“I love to look at wildlife. I’ll run into 45 spoonbills, a flock of flamingos and white pelicans. Crocodiles are second nature to me. I love every single bit about it. It never gets old. It’s my happy place and it really puts things into perspective. I also like taking people back there who have never been there before, to show them my world. They just love it.”

“Municipalities have piggy-backed on our stuff and we’ve done the same,” Forster said. “Why create the wheel? I try to be proactive and see if I have any traction from two other council people. If I do, we run with it, and if not, then we go to something else.”

As far as District 5 goes, Forster says there are similar issues in Key Largo as there is in Islamorada.

Forster says he recently attended the community meeting at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center to see and hear from officials and residents regarding Rowell’s Waterfront Park.

“I thought the meeting was really good, and people had a say in what the finished product will be,” he said. “I learned a lot. I went in there not knowing what to expect. I understand the concerns of neighboring residents. We’ve had the same issues at Executive Bay, but we’ve made it work.”

With his mantra “better together,” Forster, if elected, will be looking to bring incorporated and unincorporated sections of the Keys together at the table so all voices are heard and everyone’s on the same page.

“I know Michelle (Coldiron’s) doing that with Marathon, but that should be the culture for Monroe County,” Forster said. “I think it should be a little more open to engage with all stakeholders. We need to find the magic in the middle. We have to come together and collaborate. I think I can help bring people together.”

SAVING ALLIGATOR Foundation still hopes to preserve light

Through the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act program, the General Services Administration helps find stewards for lighthouses that are no longer considered mission critical to the U.S. Coast Guard. The GSA is offering these historic lighthouses at no cost to eligible state or local governments, a nonprofit, corporations, historic preservation groups or community development organizations.

CARYSFORT REEF LIGHTHOUSE: Constructed in 1852; about six miles offshore of Key Largo. Features a 124-foot cast iron tower with an octagonal screw-pile design, keeper’s quarters and a landing dock.

ALLIGATOR REEF LIGHTHOUSE: Built in 1873, this 148-foot cast iron lighthouse, features an octagonal screw-pile tower with keeper’s quarters and landing dock, sits about four miles offshore of Islamorada.

SOMBRERO KEY LIGHTHOUSE: Sitting seven miles off the coast of Marathon, this 142-foot cast iron octagonal screw-pile tower with keeper’s quarters was constructed in 1858.

AMERICAN SHOAL LIGHTHOUSE: Built in 1880, this 109-foot cast iron screw-pile tower with keeper’s quarters is about six miles offshore of Sugarloaf Key.

ill Rivenbark says the Florida Keys Reef Light Foundation board isn’t supposed to have favorite lighthouses. But Rivenbark told Islamorada Council members during an April 25 meeting he’s the greatest breaker of that rule.

“My favorite light is right out there, and it’s Alligator,” he said. “It has been all my life.”

Alligator Reef Light and three other Keys lighthouses are no longer considered critical to the U.S. Coast Guard, which stepped away due to budgetary reasons. The U.S. General Services Administration, which now owns the lighthouses, is looking to transfer them to a steward to take care of.

Built in 1973, the light is named after the U.S. Navy schooner Alligator, which was used to protect the Florida straits against pirates and slave ships.

The ship went aground in 1822 and was blown up, after removing as much as possible, to prevent use by pirates.

Interested individuals and parties had an April 2 deadline to submit a letter of interest to the GSA for the Keys lighthouses. The Florida Keys Reef Light Foundation, a nonprofit, put in for all four in Alligator Light, Carysfort, Sombrero and American Shoal.

Obtaining the lighthouses will be no easy task, and Rivenbark acknowledged that it’s an arduous process, having tried to secure Sand Key Lighthouse in mid-2017. The application was 100 pages in length.

“It took GSA almost one and a half years to respond to the application,” he said. “In February of this year, we were advised that our application was rejected. Typical of a major federal bureaucracy, there was no explanation, just ‘yea’ or ‘nay.’ Through back channel sources, we were able to determine that the decision makers didn’t think our group was either qualified or experienced enough. To say that we disagree with this response is an understatement. In reality, we absolutely reject the notion we’re not qualified for such.”

Formed in 2011 by Marathon resident Tom Taylor, Florida Keys Reef Light Foundation set out with the goal to save lighthouses in the Keys.

Rivenbark said Taylor left the group too early, passing away in his 50s. The group’s president today is Eric Martin.

If successful in securing Alligator Light, Rivenbark said step one would be to stabilize and install new anodes on the lights. Second, the foundation would determine if there are any structural issues with the light and complete a structural report.

Repairs to the dock and walkway would be a priority to get safely to the light platform. Overall, Rivenbark said those who view Alligator Light up close notice several characteristics.

“Most people don’t realize exactly how tall it is, and in the case of Alligator, it’s 150 feet tall from the average waterline,” he said. “Also, you’re struck by the intricacy of the construction.

You’ve got to get up within 100 yards of it to see exactly how the tie rods are connected. This is proof these lights were truly engineering marvels of their day.”

Rivenbark said if the village could give its moral support to the foundation to secure the light, “that would be tremendous.” Vice Mayor Mike Forster said he’ll ask for a small appropriation during the budget process to help out in the endeavor.

“If you look at our seal, it’s right in the middle of it,” he said. “I think it’s real important, but it has to be specific to Alligator Light. Hopefully Marathon will do the same with their lighthouse, which is on their seal, and we can get a groundswell of support. No matter how this gets done, we all benefit from it.”

Councilman Jim Mooney said he was fortunate enough to camp out at the light in the 1960s after it was decommissioned following Hurricane Donna, which struck in 1960.

“It’s an institution and we need to save that lighthouse,” Mooney said.

“You’ve got my full support.”

BATTLING THE BLAZE Luxury resort restaurant destroyed With assistance from area fire rescues, Key Largo Fire Department responded to a four-alarm fire at Bungalows Beach House on the morning of May 5. The structure housed the bar, restaurant and spa. The structure was fully involved upon arrival, keeping firefighters on scene for hours.

Tavernier, Islamorada and Monroe County rescues assisted Key Largo Fire. No injuries were reported. Bungalows, which opened in January at MM 99 bayside, is the only all-inclusive resort in the Keys, featuring 135 units, 31 beachfront and 104 island view. on 12 waterfront acres. The resort is currently closed until further notice.

MAKE A SPLASH Educational weekend of events

pcoming programs at the History of Diving Museum will take participants under water, virtually and in real life.

On Wednesday, May 15, the “Immerse Yourself” presentation at the museum will take guests below the waves without getting their hair wet.

NOAA’s Marlies Tumolo will take participants through a series of dives into the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary using virtual reality headsets.

Guests will learn about the sanctuary habitat and how to help protect it. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. and is free to everyone. Museum members can call ahead to reserve a seat.

On Saturday, May 18 there is a 10 a.m. presentation at the museum highlighting the cultural aspects of the sanctuary and proper etiquette for photographing underwater scenery.

Following the morning presentation, there will be an optional afternoon dive trip with Key Dives. Dive participants are encouraged to bring an underwater camera to partake in a casual photography contest. After the dive, photos will be submitted to and voted on by staff at the museum and Key Dives, who will pick the top three images. Prizes include a $100 gift card to Divers Direct, a photo editing program, HDM gift bag and more.

On Sunday, May 19, the museum will conduct guided tours of its artifacts at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., along with a scavenger hunt for more family fun. Later that afternoon, community outreach coordinator Emily Kovacs will lead a “painting with a purpose” class at the museum from 3 to 5 p.m.

Staying with the sanctuary theme, the painted picture will be of a brain coral with Christmas tree worms.

Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Event fees are: • Morning Presentation: $15; free for museum members.

• Dive trip with Key Dives, $85; museum members, $65. (Rental fees for additional gear.)

• Painting With a Purpose class, $35; members, $30.

• Guided tours, $15; museum members, free.

Purple Heart recipient honors veterans Political uprisings throughout our nation during the Vietnam War years were disturbing, as they fractured the traditional understandings and allegiances previously rendered unconditionally to our government and military.

That 16-year war was rich in lies, deceptions and ignorant undertakings. Because of such, it brought us to our knees and a shameful defeat in Southeast Asia.

Shielded from the draft as a student/athlete attending college on scholarship, I believed my country needed me, so they might be able to finally secure a victory and put an end to the killing. I was 18, the son of a father who stormed the shores of Normandy, being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. And the grandson of a soldier awarded two Purple Hearts during his World War I battles against Germany.

Relentlessly battling against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army came with the territory. As United States Marines, we were trained and skilled combatants.

Noteworthy was the valorous conduct, risks and sacrifices made by the Marines I served with, on behalf of civilians and children caught in the crosshairs of war. Their courage and compassion in treating innocent casualties forever memorialized their character as brave and loving men. Their integrity was unquestionable. "Uncommon valor was indeed a common virtue."

Ferociously and fearlessly committed to one another and a code of conduct epitomized our motto, Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful).

It enrages me that our government and military leaders were so excessively corrupt and incompetent in waging the war in Vietnam, so as to callously and fraudulently continue the bloodshed via combat operations rife with flawed and defective battle plans.

Such horrific destruction was not necessary. If there was indeed a military objective it could have been secured immediately.

There remain questions as to the legitimacy and a president's legal authority to engage in a war, independent of congressional approval.

Our VC and NVA prisoners informed us they were terrified of being lured into a Marine Corps ambush. Thus if allowed, that war, a conflict we probably should not have been involved in, did not have to drag on interminably. It could have been expeditiously terminated.

As a nation we haven't learned very much. We're still trying to conclude a 16-year war in Iraq and an 18-year war in Afghanistan.

The "military industrial complex" is alive and doing quite well.

As it would be, my family has been awarded four Purple Heart medals over three successive generations. This coming Memorial Day at the Upper Keys Government Center, I'll honor and remember the Marines who died in my arms. I'll pay tribute to all veterans who gave the "last full measure of their devotion."

DENIED NO MORE County reaching out to Vietnam Navy vets

he Monroe County Veterans Affairs Department is reaching out to Vietnam Navy veterans to inform them of a recent federal court decision that could lead to collecting previously denied benefits related to Agent Orange exposure.

The opinion in Procopio vs. Wilkie eliminates the distinction between Vietnam War veterans who served on land and those who served on a ship in territorial waters from Jan. 9, 1962 to May 7, 1975 in relation to the presumption of exposure to Agent Orange. The court defined the phrase “served in the Republic of Vietnam” to now include service in its territorial waters.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes the following diseases as related to Agent Orange: chronic b-cell leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas. Other illnesses believed to be caused by contact with Agent Orange: AL amyloidosis, chloracne diabetes mellitus type 2, ischemic heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy-early onset, and porphyria cutanea tarda.

‘NATURE DAYS’

REEF receives grant for education program

R

EEF was recently awarded a $3,900 grant from Ocean Reef Community Foundation (ORCF) to fund Nature Days, an educational program for abused, abandoned and neglected children.

Organized in partnership with the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter (FKCS) and Miami Bridge Youth and Family Services, Nature Days will give up to 90 children ages 11-17 from Key Largo, Homestead and Florida City the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities like kayaking and snorkeling, while learning about nature and ocean life.

Six Nature Days programs, open to 15 students each, will be offered during the 2019-20 school year. Nature Days will provide a supervised, structured program while encouraging self-esteem, self-reliance, problem solving, and positive social behaviors.

The children will participate in kayaking, snorkeling and a glass-bottom boat ride at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, touch tank lessons and dolphin viewings at Island Dolphin Care, visits to Everglades National Park and the Everglades Outpost, and hands-on projects like lionfish jewelry-making at REEF Headquarters.

Participants may include children living at the FKCS Tavernier residential facility, as well as the dozens of non-residential children and teens in Key Largo and Islamorada being served by the organization's community-based counselors. Participants may also include children living at the Miami-Dade emergency shelters in Homestead and Miami Central.

ORCF funded the inaugural Nature Days program, held in the summer of 2018. Twenty-two children from FKCS and Miami Bridge attended the program. Some children who took part were inspired to pursue a career in an ocean-oriented field.

You’re also likely to see the energetic and always-smiling Rio Campbell out and about, socializing and helping the UPS truck off Morada Way. Campbell serves as executive director the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District, the nonprofit entity behind the six-block corridor from Green Turtle Inn to the Hurricane Monument. It’s mission is to create and maintain an environment where artists inspired, where businesses can thrive and opportunities to showcase their work to locals and visitors. It’s also the organization that created something many look forward to every month — Morada Way Art Walk.

Coming back to the Keys (Rio says she was deported), she stayed for two weeks and hasn’t left since.

It’s the place where people who don’t get to see each other for a month meet and catch up. And the people come from all over, Key West to Key Largo. The people who come always look so at ease. It’s the most enriching experience.

Do you have a dog? Yes! Ernest is his name. He is a very handsome Heinz 57. He looks like a black Irish setter.

He’s the goofiest dog in the world and will do anything for a belly rub and a cookie. I moved back from Scotland and was looking for a dog for years but never found one. I was living in the Keys, but was going to New York City. I stopped in Knoxville and browsed for a dog with my mom. I said if I ever have a dog, it would be named half after Ernie from Sesame Street and half after Ernest Hemingway. They put me in the room and they released the torrent of puppies. The one came running to me with a sunflower squeaky toy in its mouth. I flipped over the collar, and sure enough, it was Ernie!

What do you do when you get a little bit of downtime? I read by the pool at Angler House.

Your hobby? Reading. I have about 10 books next to the bed and I can’t stop buying more. It’s so good.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? My next

trip would be Japan, New Zealand, Bali and Thailand.

How do you stay so energized? Lots of chocolate, and I’m a big fan of disco naps. I also like to have very peaceful downtime. If I’m out for the day, I’m out for the day. When I get home, the pajamas are on and the good music is on and I’m just kind of very chill. Coffee has been a new experience for me recently. I love CafÊ Moka.

If you could be in any movie, what one would it be? “Thor!� I’d also have to say “Only Lovers Left Alive.�

Is there someone you looked up to when you were young? I have to say I had a massive crush on John Wayne.

My grandfather was super into westerns. We’d curl up and watch John Wayne flicks and he’d talk about all the crazy stuff he did. It was really awesome. My grandpa would drink you off the table and give you the shirt off his back.

PLASTIC POLLUTION Scottish microplastics: A lesson for the Keys?

“I

f you ever wanted to know, you definitely can get seasick sitting at a desk,” says Laura La Beur to her chuckling audience at Coral Restoration Foundation’s “Sips for Science” lecture. “Reviewing hours and hours of ROV (remotely operated vehicle) footage at my desk, all I saw was surge and motion, so that was really fun for me.”

La Beur received her master’s in marine systems and policy from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where she focused on deep-sea plastics using ROV, video-grab footage, and historical cruise reports from other research voyages. While her studies were geographically limited to the United Kingdom’s continental shelf — specifically on the Mingulay Reef Complex — La Beur’s research had the broader aim of creating an assessment strategy for monitoring marine litter in deep water corals and marine protected areas. She shared her findings and their real world applications for the local Florida Reef Tract.

“This topic is so important because we know it’s no different here,” said Islamorada councilwoman Cheryl Meads, who sits on the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board. After a pause, she added, “it might be worse.”

La Beur described how down welling currents in the Mingulay Reef Complex have historically contributed to the health of deep-water corals by bringing nutrients from the surface down. She also tells how “you can assume if anything else is on the surface like microplastics, it will also be brought down to the corals, making Mingulay a very interesting place to study marine debris and microplastics. In a similar way, the local ocean currents and freshwater discharges that flow out onto our local Florida coral reefs bring along with them runoff, agricultural nutrients and marine debris.

In studying various deep-water animals in Mingulay and their feeding strategies, La Beur discovered the corals were more susceptible to microparticles – marine debris that includes both microfibers and microplastics.

Microfibers are plastic filaments from clothing, which get washed through sewers and water treatment facilities before ending up in the oceans.

Microplastics are plastic fragments that break down from larger pieces.

“As expected, suspension feeders and filter feeders had the highest ingestion of microplastics and microfibers,” said La Beur. To drive the point home, she showed a picture of a deep water bivalve with microfibers in its tissues.

La Beur’s analysis took a more policy-oriented approach when she quantified the amounts of the different plastics she found. “We have this catch-all word ‘plastics,’ but really they are all different,” says La Beur. “Interestingly, 90% of microparticles I found were microfibers,” says La Beur. “We can use Raman spectroscopy and other cool technology to identify the type of microfibers found, to identify the polymer of plastic.”

Calling for additional research, La Beur advocates for this precise study to figure out what is polluting our waters: “There’s a specific polymer for fishing nets and a specific polymer for clothing, and once we know what’s the biggest culprit, we can start tailoring our policies to tackle the biggest sources of pollution getting into our waterways,” she said.

Julie Landau, of Islamorada, said society thinks it’s okay to use things once and throw them away. Whitney Wemett, a local conservationist, said, “It’s interesting: when you break down the sources of pollution, you can more effectively address and form policies. I never thought of it like that before.” Meads, nodding in agreement, added, “Precisely. Education is what calls people to action. We need talks like this, because they make you want to act.”

he Experiment in International Living, a program of world learning, is accepting 37 early admission students from Monroe County for summer 2019 — the largest number of students in the U.S. “These students will be traveling to 16 different countries and 23 different programs,” said Heather Beard, director of admissions for the program.

Students explore the world through hands-on experiences and homestays in local communities through the lens of a specific theme, including: sustainability and the environment; arts and social change; language and cultural discovery; leadership training; or peace, politics, and human rights.

Aaron Morehouse, executive director of the program, said 12 of the accepted students participate in Monroe County’s Take Stock in Children Program. They will join 25 other Monroe County students selected to receive partial meritbased scholarships through the exclusive Global Leaders Essay Contest.

HIDDEN HABANOS Enjoy some Cuban along the creek

t’s a hidden gem by the water with some of the finest Cuban favorites that’ll leave you ready for the next trip back.

Habanos On The Creek is the perfect spot to dock while on Tavernier Creek to grab some lunch or dinner. For motorists, turn into Tavernier Creek Marina, located at MM 90.8, bayside, and make your way back to the marina for a sandwich, seafood baskets, some steak and beef, chicken or pork.

The Cuban restaurant opened along the water in Tavernier three years ago. Frank Pena, who runs the small place, says items on the menu are traditional Cuban creations. With its location along Tavernier Creek, there’s also Habanos Oceanfront at MM 73, Oceanside.

“We appreciate the customer,” Pena said. “We try to make the best Cuban food every day. The customer is most important.”

With traditional starters like conch fritters and cracked conch, Habanos on the Creek also offers croquetas and mariquitas. If you’re looking for a yummy start to your dining experience, order the Cuban nachos. With plantain chips, the dish is topped with mouth-watering pork, melted cheese and pico de gallo.

On the menu, patrons also can order seafood baskets, from beer battered shrimp to fried conch, and there are also soups and salads. There’s also a long list of sandwiches to enjoy, from the Cuban sandwich and cheeseburger to the roasted pork sandwich and croquette sandwich.

For an entrée, try a meat dish such as the Habanos platter, which comes with a chicken breast, roasted pork, skirt steak and is served with chimchurri sauce. It comes with your choice of two sides such as white rice, black beans, fried green plantains and mixed vegetables, to name a few options. Or try the skirt steak, which is filete de churrasco and served with chimichurri sauce.

There are also chicken dishes, like the chicken Milanese and stir-fry, and pork meals, like roasted pork and fried pork chunks, and pastas.

Pena says with a nice atmosphere along the water, stop on by and enjoy the food. It’s a hot spot for locals and tourists.

“It’s a beautiful view and a relaxing place,” he said. “We’re bringing the traditional Cuban way in the way of our food.”

Habanos on the Creek is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
