NUMBER OF THE WEEK The number of rivers that contain freshwater shrimp testing positive for traces of cocaine in the U.K. A study, published in the journal Environmental International, also revealed the presence of ketamine, pesticides and anti-depressant drugs.

This isn’t the first time — eels living in the Thames River have also tested positive for cocaine, and another study in Seattle found mussels with traces of oxycodone.

n May 7, another surge of school violence splashed across national headlines: one dead, eight wounded in a Colorado charter school shooting. Not just any school … one located a few miles from Columbine High, which put school shootings on our collective national radar 20 years ago.

Closer to home, Monroe County Schools have been taking a serious look at preventive measures, especially in the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida in February 2018. In its wake, the Florida legislature passed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, and thus the Florida Department of Education adopted best practices for school safety.

Just a few weeks ago, a Key West High School student came to school with a loaded handgun, leading to his expulsion and more public scrutiny on safety in Keys schools. We caught up with Superintendent Mark Porter as well as Keys high school principals to talk about the ways our schools are approaching safety in a time of increased gun violence.

While Monroe County only expels a handful of students annually, and often not for weapons or violence, it is an apt time to reevaluate school preventive policy. So what do we already have in place to get ahead of school violence?

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS “We have a school resource officer or a school security officer on all 16 campuses each and every day,” said Porter. “They aren’t mere security guards — they engage in the culture and fabric of the school.”

While the school district used to share the cost of the officers with the sheriff’s department, with the additional millage this year, the school district is paying the expense of the SROs in full.

Principal Blake Fry of Coral Shores High School said SROs provide an invaluable resource, and they’re an intricate part of the school’s staff.

“They not only provide the safety and security and expertise of their profession here on the campus, but they are part of the Coral Shores community and play a significant role in the culture and relationships of

students and staff here,” he said.

Fry said current SRO Jose Costoya provides additional support at extra- curricular events, classroom instruction and supports the building, district, and state safety and security initiatives on a daily basis.

“The relationships that our SROs build with students provide another layer of security that would not exist without their presence on campus,” Fry said.

HARDENING THE SCHOOLS One policy adopted after 2019 spring break that came under fire was the locked classroom door policy — teachers must lock classrooms from the inside during class.

“To be honest, we were a little bit reluctant to move forward with this policy, when many other schools did,” said Porter. “The overwhelming statistic is that of 46 school intruder incidents, not a single intruder has breached a classroom door.”

The district also considered transparent backpacks, a policy that Stoneman Douglas adopted and then dropped because of the difficulty with enforcement.

Marathon High School Prinicipal Wendy McPherson said the security measures outlined by the school board have been implemented at Marathon.

“Putting the fencing around campus to control who comes and goes has been one of the most effective parts of the plan,” said McPherson, adding that the fencing plan is evolving. “But I also strongly believe in training,” McPherson said. “You can have 101 safety measures in place, but unless people are trained and used to taking action, it does us no good.”

Safety measures at Stanley Switlik Elementary are perhaps better in part because of the massive $23 million reconstruction underway. “Our new campus will have the physical safety features built in. In fact, our temporary campus already has them, too,” said principal Brett Unke.

Parents and school partners must pass through a single “portal” to gain access to the institution.

The district has not adopted use of metal detectors in Monroe County schools.

Their son, Ben, is 15. “She’s always there for both of us even in her busy real estate world,” Don said. “And she’s a baseball mom for sure. She just attended the last varsity game and I think she’s a little depressed the season has ended!”

3. M.P. Coleman-Sayer is mom to Fisher and Cullen. Maggie Sayer said, “She does it all; from laundry and dishes to basketball coach and math tutor, she does whatever the boys need to help make them successful. She also makes a mean s’more and is a great navigator on our camping adventures (though we did end up on a one-way road that ended at a motorcycle bar once).”

MOORING OUTSIDE ‘THE FIELD’ New FWC study does not affect liveaboards or transient boats

T

he Florida State Legislature recently passed a bill that directs the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to conduct a study on the impacts to local communities of boats stored long-term on Florida waters outside of public mooring fields.

The bill defines long-term storage as a boat not being under the supervision or control of a person capable of operating, maintaining or moving it from one location to another and which has remained anchored or moored outside of a public mooring field for at least 30 days out of a 60-day period. It does not refer to liveaboards or transient boats.

The study will investigate and determine how long-term stored vessels contribute to the number of derelict or abandoned vessels on state waters. Long-term stored or unattended boats affect public safety, may become hazards to navigation, can affect the environment, and contribute to the cost of vessel cleanup, especially after a hurricane. The study can take up to two years and is subject to funding.

“Monroe County is the poster child for derelict vessels in Florida,” said Rich Jones, Monroe County’s marine resource administrator. “We anticipate that the management options provided from the results of this study will lead to significant positive impacts for Florida Keys waters.”

The Monroe County-driven bill was drafted in part by Jones, who worked in coordination with FWC to determine the root cause of how derelict vessels are generated, and alternative ways to prevent that from happening. The bill was championed in Tallahassee

by Monroe County Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson and the county’s lobbying team. Both Sen. Anitere Flores and Rep. Holly Raschein co-sponsored the bill in their respective chambers.

If the study finds that long-term stored vessels are a problem, the next step includes legislative recommendations, which may include time limits for how long such vessels can be anchored or moored on state waters outside of mooring fields.

MEADS READY FOR WATER DISTRICT ISSUES

T

his month, Cheryl Meads will travel to the South Florida Water Management District headquarters in West Palm Beach for the next governing board workshop on water quality management. Appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in February, Meads and seven other new board members are set to confront some serious water problems facing the southern end of the state.

An Islamorada councilwoman, Meads submitted her application as DeSantis set out to bring change to the board, which sets policy for the agency, for a fresh start. And DeSantis did just that as new appointed members took oath in March.

“I think, like anyone, I was humbled

by it and happy to have the opportunity to make a difference,” Meads said. “I just believed my background fits well, and we’re in a situation where now we have a governor who has the vision and is putting things in action.”

Meads holds a degree in chemistry with education, training and experience in biology, microbiology, water analysis, development and implementation of quality systems. She previously worked as a contractor for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As a global quality assurance manager with GlaxoSmithKline, she discovered defects with GSK medications and brought forward a whistleblower lawsuit. It led to a felony guilty plea in 2010 to distributing adulterated drugs with the intent to mislead and defraud.

During the first couple weeks, Meads says the board has been digesting a tremendous amount of information. During a workshop last month, members heard and discussed the district’s history, how and why canals were made and moving water from one place to another.

“I believe that we are focused on moving water south, but there are some obstacles that we need to work with and talk

through, like reducing phosphorus in the discharge waters from Lake Okeechobee,” Meads said.

In late 2014, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection adopted a 10-year, $750 million plan to combat excessive nutrients entering Lake Okeechobee — and a goal to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering the lake by 33 percent.

Meads said there are many stakeholders involved, from those who manage the issues to those feeling the result of decisions. The Army Corps of Engineers controls Lake O when it comes to releasing water, but Meads said the water district provides input and opinion.

“We all have to sit at the same table and we all have a seat and we have to work together to come through for a positive result,” she said. “The needs differ county to county. Some worry about having enough water, others about algal blooms and others too much water. It’s a delicate balance.”

Meads says she enjoys working with fellow members. She’s also looking forward to seeing Ron Bergeron, whose term started in April.

“They’re bright and accomplished and they all bring different things to the table,” she said. “We have an Army colonel who’s fantastic, a lawyer, a couple of finance guys.”

MEET THE MEMBERS DIVERSE BOARD GOVERNS WATER DISTRICT

T

he South Florida Water Management District is directed by board members who set policy.

They live in the 16-county region that makes up the district, and they come from diverse backgrounds, from business and the environment to local government and agriculture.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has filled eight of the nine board positions after asking for the resignations of former members. The position is volunteer-based; terms are four years. Meetings are held monthly in West Palm Beach.

Here’s a look at the eight members of the governing board.

CHERYL MEADS An at-large member, Meads represents an area that includes St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Meads is a dedicated water quality advocate who believes protecting this precious resource is key to helping the lives of all who call South Florida home.

CHARLETTE ROMAN An at-large member, Roman represents Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, Highlands, Glades, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola and Polk counties.

Roman is a retired U. S. Army officer with 26 years of military service who enlisted in 1973 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1976.

JACQUI THURLOW-LIPPISCH An at-large member, she represents St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties ThurlowLippisch, a longtime advocate for the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon, publishes a blog sharing commentary about the impacts to the health of those waterways.

SCOTT WAGNER Representing Miami-Dade County, Wagner is vice chairman of the board. He’s president of Wagner Legal. As a practicing maritime lawyer, Wagner brings a unique perspective and expertise of Florida’s waterways to the South Florida Water Management District.

CARLOS MARTINEZ Martinez, who represents Miami-Dade County, is president of CEM Investments LLC, an investor in a variety of real estate projects. He’s also a partner in the Grove Bay Group, a food and beverage company that owns and operates restaurants in MiamiDade.

JAY STEINLE Representing Palm Beach County, Steinle has been managing director of Lighthouse Investment Partners since 2005. His interest in water quality and Everglades restoration evolved as a result of his passion for outdoor sports that depend on these resources.

CHAUNCEY GOSS Representing Lee, Collier, Hendry and Charlotte counties, Goss is the board chairman.

He grew up on Sanibel Island and is founder and managing partner of Goss Practical Solutions — a firm that provides federal fiscal policy analysis and budget forecasting. Goss first became involved with water quality issues when he worked as the executive director of the Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association.

RON BERGERON SR. Representing Broward County, Bergeron served two terms as a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commissioner and was the point commissioner over the Florida Everglades. Bergeron has been a tireless champion for the restoration and protection of the Everglades, one of the natural wonders of the world. He also founded the Bergeron Everglades Museum and Wildlife Foundation with the central focus of saving the environment and educating the public on the importance of preserving Florida’s natural resources.

‘BETTER TOGETHER’ Forster looking to bring ‘magic in the middle’ JIM McCARTHY

t’s 4 a.m. on a Monday, and Mike Forster is awake, to prepare some food for the teachers at Plantation Key School for Teacher Appreciation week. After that, it’s off to Mangrove Mike’s Café where it’s bustling with hungry patrons.

When he gets a moment away from the café, catering and civic engagements, Forster is out and about, speaking with residents from Key West to Key Largo on some of the major issues they’re dealing with today.

“I still have that fire and passion to keep serving,” Forster said during a recent sit-down with the Weekly.

Forster, who’s in his final term as Islamorada councilman, officially filed for Board of County Commissioners’ District 5 seat on March 12, 2018. He said he filed after current district representative and mayor Sylvia Murphy announced her retirement.

Forster’s the only one who’s filed for the seat so far.

“There’s no losing in running for the seat,” Forster said.

“The worst thing is I lose, and it’s all good because I formed new relationships throughout the county and met great people. The point of running, for me, is engaging with as many taxpayers as I possibly can to see what they’re passionate about.”

In recent weeks, Forster has been traveling up and down the Keys to attend Rotary and chamber meetings and speak with residents and community leaders. Though each key is unique, Forster says the islands share some of the same issues from affordable housing and water quality to Citizen’s insurance rates and traffic.

“I look at the bridges here in the Keys as arteries. We’re all connected,” Forster says. “For me, I want to educate myself on what residents want moving forward. For example, some areas want affordable housing and some don’t. And Citizens’ insurance rates; we all share that, and we all share the fact that we want home rule and we want to get rid of preemption.”

But there are differences, too, on what the people want.

“As I went south to Big Pine Key, I heard that they don’t want growth,” he continued. “They want to keep it the old Keys. That’s the curb appeal before you get into Stock Island. I see where Marathon is coming into their own with great leadership from Chuck Lindsey, who’s doing a great job following policy with council.”

As an Islamorada councilman since 2003, Forster says he’s stayed accessible to the public while helping them get their situations and issues over to village management and staff to handle. As for policy, Forster says he likes to see what other municipalities in Monroe County are doing to see if it’s worth replicating.

Mike Forster’s nirvana? It’s fishing at Everglades National Park.

Forster says it’s the only place he fishes. “It’s not all about fishing, although it’s my passion,” he says.

“I love to look at wildlife. I’ll run into 45 spoonbills, a flock of flamingos and white pelicans. Crocodiles are second nature to me. I love every single bit about it. It never gets old. It’s my happy place and it really puts things into perspective. I also like taking people back there who have never been there before, to show them my world. They just love it.”

“Municipalities have piggy-backed on our stuff and we’ve done the same,” Forster said. “Why create the wheel? I try to be proactive and see if I have any traction from two other council people. If I do, we run with it, and if not, then we go to something else.”

As far as District 5 goes, Forster says there are similar issues in Key Largo as there is in Islamorada.

Forster says he recently attended the community meeting at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center to see and hear from officials and residents regarding Rowell’s Waterfront Park.

“I thought the meeting was really good, and people had a say in what the finished product will be,” he said. “I learned a lot. I went in there not knowing what to expect. I understand the concerns of neighboring residents. We’ve had the same issues at Executive Bay, but we’ve made it work.”

With his mantra “better together,” Forster, if elected, will be looking to bring incorporated and unincorporated sections of the Keys together at the table so all voices are heard and everyone’s on the same page.

“I know Michelle (Coldiron’s) doing that with Marathon, but that should be the culture for Monroe County,” Forster said. “I think it should be a little more open to engage with all stakeholders. We need to find the magic in the middle. We have to come together and collaborate. I think I can help bring people together.”

Letter carriers collect food Clean out the cupboards! The National Association of Letter Carriers will be conducting its annual food drive — “Stamp Out Hunger” — on Saturday, May 11. Members of the public are encouraged to put out nonperishables, which will be collected by letter carriers on their normal routes. “All of the food collected in the Middle Keys will go to KAIR,” said Marathon postmaster Erik Pendlebury. Think cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, canned fruit and veggies, soups, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, etc. In other post office news, Joe Fatta was named “most valuable player” by the Marathon team. He works out of the Key Colony Beach office and, Pendlebury says, is often praised by the very community he serves.

hirty-seven early admission students from Monroe County have been accepted by the Experiment in International Living to participate in the international cross-cultural programs this summer.

The students will be traveling to 16 different countries and 23 different programs.

Heather Beard, director of admissions, said, “With 37 students participating this summer, Monroe County has the highest number of students participating than any other county in the U.S., outside of the New York City metro area.”

Beard said 12 of the Keys students are Take Stock in Children scholars, and the other 25 Keys students were selected to receive partial merit-based scholarships through EIL’s essay contest.

There is still room for a few more students. “We have vacancies available in certain programs for additional Monroe students, if they apply right away. Students should contact me directly at 802-258-3412 or heather. beard@experiment.org,” Beard said.

Representatives from Experiment in International Living make presentations at each of the three Keys high schools every year. In addition to the students selected from Coral Shores High School and Key West High School, the following students from Marathon High School will be traveling this summer:

I own a condo down the street from the Skipjack property/resort that has been rumored to have intentions of turning it into a large low cost rental, or hotel for transients, with license. This would negatively impact not only our street, but probably the reputation of Marathon being a small, upscale resort community. There are enough low cost places to live throughout the Keys, I think a concentration of low income/ transient housing in such a small area and on a small street would have negative impacts for all of us who have invested substantial amounts into the area, and would probably open the doors for exiting the town, selling off properties, and lowering the values of owned housing throughout the town. Condos? Sure. Low-cost rentals? I can only imagine the neighbors we will have to deal with along the street …

What is something most people don’t know about you? I am an Eagle Scout, the highest rank achievable with in the Boy Scouts of America.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My all-time favorite teacher must be Ms. Heyl for AP Calculus AB. She encouraged me to strive for a 5 on the exam, and gave me the tools to do so.

What are your plans after high school? I will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a major in aerospace engineering.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MHS? I hope to be remembered as a helpful student to both the teachers and the student body.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I enjoy playing video games such as Apex Legends.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I would like to come back here in the future, but my intended line of work will likely require me to live on the mainland.

BRIEFLY Sediment removed from Marathon canals The first of the 10-canal Hurricane Irma sediment removal projects in the Florida Keys are underway. Tavernierbased Adventure Environmental, Inc. began the sediment removal project in three Marathon canals. The two Islamorada canal projects were expected to start on May 8 and the five Big Pine Key canals are waiting for final permit authorizations.

The activities include mobilizing barges topped with containers, setting up erosion and sediment control areas with turbidity barriers, and staging areas with hay bales to safely remove the sediment from the area.

The project has funding by an Emergency Watershed Protection grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The NRCS is the entity that approved which canals received the grant funding.

These sediment removal projects fall under the initial Hurricane Irma Marine Debris Removal clearing project that has a $45.8 million budget. So far, $21 million has been spent.

t’s that time of year — traffic on Overseas Highway is a little less congested and it seems the number of visitors is beginning to slow. Not so fast, say the folks at the Marathon Yacht Club (MYC). Take notice and be warned, we will be invaded from the north by land and water for the annual Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) convention, set for Friday to Sunday, May 17-19.

Plans have been laid to occupy a significant portion of our land mass as well as our harbors beginning around Wednesday, May 15. Scouts at the MYC predict over 100 of the FCYC invaders to participate in the intrusion.

The FCYC is made up of 36 yacht clubs located around the state, from the panhandle to the Keys. The member clubs represent a population of nearly 40,000 voters who have aided in bringing many legislative matters, favorable to the boating public, to a successful conclusion. For example, the council’s lobbyist helped to promote Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recommendation of $625 million of Everglades restoration and protection of our state’s water resources. This historic budget proposal will have a

substantial impact on the water and quality of life in Florida. Really, the FCYC is looking out for all of us!

Established in 1960, the council is a respected force of dedicated yachtsmen and an active member of water-oriented organizations such as the National Boating Federation. Close liaison is maintained with the U.S. Coast Guard in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami and the Corps of Engineers district office in Jacksonville.

The Marathon Yacht Club is a member of the FCYC and takes responsibility for the upcoming “invasion.”

And, certainly, this stopover can’t possibly be ALL meetings and business.

ing skills and marine science. MYC also hosts an annual luncheon for Stanley Switlik Elementary students who excel at extracurricular reading. The program is a great success and kids are excited to dine at the club alongside their principal. Finally, the MYC Auxiliary holds fundraising events to support high school students as well as Healthy Start, which provides services and much needed support to pregnant women and families with newborns.

The members are proud to welcome our friends from the north. We intend to show them the town, and Saturday’s trips to the Turtle Hospital and Aquarium Encounters promise to please and entertain. We would also like to invite locals to check out the Marathon Yacht Club. You know the one — the little building with the blue roof at the end of 33rd Street gulfside.

We do a lot of good things down there, and we have fun doing it.

uilding the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway was a herculean project.

Railroad Work Camp 10 was originally established on Key Vaca for the purpose of supporting grade and fill projects.

In the area of what is now 33rd Street and the Stanley Switlik School, railroad workers began clearing land for what would become a railroad yard in 1907.

Telegraph lines linking Miami to Marathon would open on Oct. 26, 1907. The work camp blossomed into a sprawling town site and home to some 1,500 railroad workers. In 1908, the general office and primary construction headquarters were established at the site. Camp 10 would grow to include the Marathon Station and construction headquarters but, by 1910, also a school, hospital, post office, tennis court, fish house, mess hall, the Tail Track Dock and the Marathon Hotel. The hotel, the first in the area, was another railroad construction project. The two-story building had 25 rooms and a wrap-around second floor porch. It opened in 1908.

Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jeffrey resided in Marathon for the past 20 years.

Jeffrey was always charming, smiling, and willing to help. He will be sorely missed by all, especially his beloved constant companion Brendle, and never forgotten. He will stay in our hearts forever.

He is lovingly remembered by all his family, friends and especially mourned by his mom, Germaine Main; daughter, Heather Riemke and sons Josh and Jake Main; grandmother, Marylou Strayle; and grandson Joseph.

A memorial service at St. Columba Episcopal Church will be planned at a later date for friends and family in the Marathon area.

‘HE MIGHT BE OKAY AT IT’ Marathon’s Alex Rickert finds his place in the sun SARA MATTHIS

kay, full disclosure: Alex Rickert is a freelancer for the Weekly Newspaper. He’s also a dolphin trainer, and currently starring in “Making God Laugh,” a Marathon Community Theatre mainstage production.

In his late 20s, he is what someone from an older generation would call “such a nice young man.” But he’s more than that — he’s curious, hardworking and thoughtful and, gosh dang, his copy is clean. We like him. We really, really like him.

Rickert grew up in Rhode Island for the most part, and graduated Full name and nickname: Alexander Paul Rickert.

What did you study? I majored in biology and minored in psychology. Honestly, I wish I had done it the other way around. As important as a dolphin’s biology is, what I do now is more about relationships and learning and behavior and motivation, rather than cells and organisms and mitochondria.

What do you love about dolphins? I love that sometimes dolphins understand people better than they understand themselves. They know which people need a nudge. They can also humble people. And I love how they take care of each other and their babies. You almost have to see it to believe it. It’s ridiculous how intelligent, caring and unique each of the dolphins are.

What do you appreciate about Dolphin Research Center? I have never worked somewhere that views communication with animals as such an even, two-way street. Of course, we make decisions related to their health and well being, because that is our job. But we also factor in what they want, and the choices that they make.

What do you love about living in the Florida Keys? I’ve always been a water kid. At 4 years old I grabbed a net, caught minnows, and made a mini-aquarium in a bucket and

He moved to the Keys soon after to begin work at the Dolphin Research Center. In 2017, he appeared on stage for the very first time as a cast member in “Cabaret.” (Rickert said, “They had a cast member drop out and asked me to fill in. They said, ‘We think you might be okay at this.’”) In December of 2018, he started writing part-time for the Marathon Weekly.

I do lots of diving, I ride my Jet Ski, I spear … and after Hurricane Irma, I saw the way people bonded. Going into the theater and rebuilding after the storm was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

What other organizations are you a part of? I serve on the theater’s executive board and I am also a member of the Pearl Dive Team. Okay, the last is just a good group of friends who go out on the water together.

Any hobbies besides dolphins and writing and acting? Well, yes. I play guitar. I run.

I used to play basketball but now it’s pick-up games of basketball and pickleball and softball. I also like diving and spear-fishing and wakeboarding and Jet Skiing. I guess I do a lot of “ing.”

What’s the last book you read? “From Darkness to Dynasty: The First 40 Years of the New England Patriots” by Jerry Thornton. (Guess we can add football-ing to that list.)

What’s the last movie you watched? “Avengers: Endgame.” So cool.

If you could star next to any Hollywood actor, whom would you choose? Neil Patrick Harris; he’s hilarious.

If your girlfriend were to give you a “hall pass,” which Hollywood star would you take out on a date? Brooklyn Decker.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Watching “The Bachelor.” Hey, during my internship in Hawaii, I was the only guy in a group of 22 students. I could either chill alone in my room, or go out into the living room and watch and make fun of everybody!

Has your life ever been in danger? When? I guess it’s a tie between riding a Jet Ski through a freak, pop-up hail storm in Rhode Island or the time a bull shark stole a grouper right in front of us when we were 80 feet underwater.

Finish these sentences …

My favorite holiday … is Christmas. I know that’s vanilla, but it’s true.

There are two types of people in the world … people who work hard for what they want and won’t stop, and people who blame others and anything else because they can’t have what they want.

In 20 years … I hopefully won’t be as broke as I am now!

t’s time. The annual Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys fishing tournament always coincides with Mother’s Day. And it always targets dolphin.

“This is by far our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Habitat’s Chris Todd-Young. Already, more than 70 anglers are signed up to participate in the 13th annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament. She expects the field to swell to 200, with folks competing for more than $9,000 in cash prizes.

The tournament starts on Friday, May 10, with last-minute registration from 5 to 6 p.m. at Key Colony Inn. The captain’s meeting (mandatory) begins at 6 p.m. Then it’s lines in bright and early the next morning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.

Anglers haul their best catch dockside to Curly’s Coffee between the hours of 3:30 and 6 p.m. The awards party, beginning at 7 p.m. that same evening, will also be at Key Colony Inn. There are four categories of anglers — pros, weekend warriors, ladies and juniors. Registration fees range from $200 to $75. Anglers who register before midnight on Thursday, May 9, will receive a $25 discount.

“All of the proceeds help us continue our hurricane repair program, as well as build new affordable homes in the Middle Keys,” Todd-Young said.

Members of the public are invited to drop by the weigh-in. (“That is — by far — the most fun,” said Todd-Young). Passersby can drop a donation in the bucket for a beverage and get a front-row view of the contest’s results.

At Lazy Days South, guests can arrive on foot, by car or by boat. Located in the Marathon Marina and Boatyard, the restaurant has several slips of its own to offer diners. After tying up the boat, the voyagers can “anchor” on the breezy deck of the restaurant, overseeing the vast views of the ocean and the new Isla Bella Beach Resort across the water. There’s indoor seating as well, chilled by the A/C. During happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m., the appetizers are very reasonable. Try the mozzarella sticks or calamari, but especially the fried oysters. Quite a few locals come for that delicious appetizer, and they pair it with a $2 discount on cocktails, or half off all beers and house wines.

This family-owned restaurant takes pride in its seafood dishes. But it’s the style in which the food is prepared that makes it special. Lazy Days’ signature chicken or fish is encrusted with Japanese breadcrumbs (panko), topped with diced tomatoes and scallions, Key lime butter sauce and fresh grated Parmesan cheese. Fishermen are welcome to bring in their own catch, and Lazy Days will fix and serve it.

Owner Bernardo Ornelas’ niece, Lupita Ornelas, manages the restaurant. “We have an extensive menu,” she said. “And for those who are not interested in seafood, we have steaks and several vegetarian dishes. Homemade soup du jour includes cream of broccoli, veggie minestrone or Mexican tortilla, to name a few.”

New to the menu is the gyro wrap, and no visit would be complete without a slice of homemade Key lime pie, baked right there in the restaurant kitchen.

H-WORD SEASON T Things we fear; things that comfort… he 2019 hurricane season approaches, and with it comes the fear and dread of what just one of these named monsters can do. Many already noted the early system that came from the Bahamas; while it dumped a little rain, it raised awareness of the season to come.

Closer to home, some of us have recovered from Irma, while others still wait for assistance to rebuild. Most of us still feel a bit of anxiety upon each announcement of the upcoming tropical season.

It should be noted that therapists consider this a normal reaction to having faced a truly abnormal set of circumstances. Hearing about the upcoming season triggers memories of the not-so-distant past.

Let’s take this opportunity, however, to reflect on the things that make us a strong and resilient community — a community that can face adversity and come out better on the other side. First and foremost: we have survived!

Our city staff did an incredible job cleaning up the debris from our streets and assisting in helping local businesses and homeowners rebuild. While we are still waiting for the bulk of FEMA reimbursement funds to show up, street repairs go on. Park maintenance continues. And Sombrero Beach is finally getting the rehab it deserves.

Our local business community stepped up and was there in the immediate aftermath as well as the prolonged recovery. We all have stories about our favorite places opening up their businesses and their hearts to locals in need after Irma. These businesses went above and beyond even through limited supplies, a displaced workforce, and damages incurred to their homes and establishments.

Many businesses have totally recovered, thanks to the efforts of so many. We have restaurants, resorts, grocery stores, post offices, a functional hospital, and more — and the most recent successful tourist season was a testament to the hard work of our Marathon community. We in the Keys are hearty folk.

We ARE a community. We ARE there for each other. We all know neighbors who were there for so many of us… those who assisted in debris removal… those who helped people who lost everything
