Keeping the Promise: Fishermen’s Community Hospital Celebrates Progress and Timeline for Opening New Facility Fishermen’s Community Hospital celebrated another milestone in its campaign to build the new hospital at a special event March 28. Themed “Keeping the Promise,” the event on the hospital site gave attendees an up-close-and-personal look at the near-completion of demolition of the original facility, blueprints of the site plan for the new hospital, and tours of the modular facility established by Baptist Health in July 2018 to provide continuous care until the new hospital opens.

Fishermen’s Community Hospital CEO Rick Freeburg shared that the groundbreaking for the new facility is estimated to take place in December 2019, with an anticipated opening in June 2021.

“We are so grateful to our donors,” said Freeburg. “Through their generosity, we’re now 75 percent of the way toward our goal of raising $15 million toward the total cost of $40 million to build the new hospital.”

Freeburg also announced the contractor of the new hospital, Robins & Morton, the firm that also led the construction of Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute, which opened in 2017.

The new hospital will include 24-hour emergency services; outpatient observation beds; medical/ surgical inpatient unit for critical patients with 24/7 monitoring; a surgical suite; an endoscopic suite; inpatient and outpatient imaging services; support services such as laboratory, dietary, pharmacy and cardiopulmonary, and an updated helipad. The hospital also will be built to category 5 hurricane standards.

The amount Andrew Lippi is accused of defrauding Kmart by returning boxes filled with random goods; for example, a $150 Keurig coffee machine box that law enforcement officers say had a basketball inside it. POWER OUTAGE Item removed from the agenda gets the most attention SARA MATTHIS

here’s the power that runs through the electrical lines and the type of power that comes in numbers.

Although the start of the Marathon City Council meeting was delayed by an hour (a sailboat drifted into a tie-line at MM 74, resulting in a blackout on April 9), about two dozen residents milled around the City Hall lobby for a chance to address the council. They were there to speak about the proposal to convert hotel rooms into affordable housing, citywide.

Last week, the Marathon Weekly reported on Republic Investment’s idea to take 109 rooms at the Skipjack Resort and Marina and convert them to affordable housing. (Republic Investment owns 109 units at the resort, and 40 more are privately owned.) Two weeks ago, Barbara Mitchell of Mitchell Planning and Design and attorney Tom Wright pitched the council on proposed changes to the city’s Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations that would allow for higher densities — 25 units per acre — in a Mixed Use Zone. To be clear, Skipjack Resort has not formally applied to the city for either affordable housing permits, or the planning commission for a development agreement or conditional use to make those changes on that exact property.

The mere idea was enough, however, to bring out Skipjack condo owners en masse. But the item had already been removed from the agenda.

Only three Skipjack condo owners made it to the podium to ask the council to dismiss the idea, before Wright, the attorney, took his turn. He objected.

“My client was told this matter would not be heard on April 9. We canceled travel plans,” Wright said when reached the following day.

“But the council let there be input.

From the standpoint of fairness to my client, especially the criticism being directed their way, it’s only right Republic Investment have a chance to respond.”

Condo owner Sarah Mundy urged the council to look elsewhere to solve the affordable housing issues. Lawrence McKenna said, “We had a meeting on March 23 at Skipjack and there was no mention of this. It’s disingenuous that we didn’t find out about it until (The Weekly published),” said Bruce Ferraro, owner of an investment property at Skipjack. “I am a big proponent of affordable housing, but I’m not sure the city should be involved in converting or repurposing hotel units. It’s not a very fair proposal … because the owners are left by the wayside. The sale price of our units would be greatly depressed.”

After Wright’s objection, the council canceled the rest of the public input regarding that specific matter. The council said it would be heard at the next meeting on May 14, because the April 23 session was canceled.

In other news: • Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay gave the council a check for $84,000 in unspent funds remaining of its contract to provide

law enforcement for the City of Marathon, an annual occurrence in recent years. Ramsay told the council that crime is down 16.3% and thanked the council for the opportunity to serve. The council thanked him for his frugality and service.

• The council did not formally adopt a city seal that has been trademarked by Councilman Mark Senmartin. City attorney David Migut advised the council that the U.S. conforms to the “first to use” versus the “first to register” method of determining trademark rights, adding the city has been using the seal for 19 years. Migut also said if the city were to formally adopt the seal, it would aid only in criminal prosecution of its misuse.

“In terms of trademark, we have nothing to worry about. Whether to adopt it or not is a policy decision,” Migut said. Senmartin responded: “If the city refuses to adopt and protect the seal, then I will until we have a council that understands and wants to work together.”

• The city staff announced it has FEMA’s promise for funding to build a retaining wall around Sombrero Beach to keep sand in place when another storm strikes. The public works department reported the contractor at the beach is moving quickly and could be done before the deadline.

• The council approved a request to modify the commercial building proposed for the front of the Marriott Courtyard property to include a drive-through. The square footage of the building was dropped from 6,000 to 5,500 square feet. A representative from Marriott said it has not selected a tenant yet.

A CLOWDER OF CATS This past week was a recordbreaking day for SNIP (Spay Neuter in Paradise). Multiple organizations and volunteers came together to “fix” 52 feral cats, according to director Gwen Hawtof. While veterinarian Brian Huntsman was performing the surgery, assisted by Laura Thornburgh, volunteers from Forgotten Felines and Whalton’s pet store in the Middle Keys, and Casting for Cats from the Upper Keys, helped monitor the animals on the recovery tables. The cat gets a thorough evaluation, is vaccinated and has its ears cleaned.

The cats that are tame enough for adoption can be found at Whalton’s Pet Shop or Keys Animal Hospital in the Middle Keys.

riginally from Miami, Dave Rodriguez moved to the Keys 35 years ago with his late father, who passed in 2006. Boy, would that dad be proud. Rodriguez’s company, Superior Electric, has swelled to 37 employees, performing work from Ocean Reef to Key West. He’s been performing good works on the sly, too, say the folks who know him. Besides providing good business service, Rodriguez has two other passions: golf and fishing.

Full name: David Rodriguez.

When did you start Superior Electric?

In 2005.

How did you get your start in electrical work? (Laughing) I was a commercial fisherman, but my boat sank. A guy from AM Electric hired me as a helper and I never looked back. Electrical work is a lot easier than commercial fishing.

What’s the most common type of work for Superior Electric? Oh, residential. I enjoy working with people, not for out-oftown companies.

Any commercial work? Sure, we did Havana Jack’s tiki bar, and also installed service for the company doing repairs on the Old 7 Mile Bridge. I think they were going to spend $150,000 on fuel to run the generators, and we were able to install the service for $50,000 so they could be on the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative power grid.

What’s the most common “mistake” you see homeowners making? Overloaded power strips can melt down and catch fire.

Do you ever get calls from customers in the middle of the night? Yes. One time an Ocean Reef resident called because his power was out. I explained to him it would cost thousands more to begin right away, but he didn’t want to wait.

Do you have a motto? The business motto is, “We show up.” I’ll die with that

in my head. If you live down here, you understand that’s a big deal.

But you love golf? My dad was so mad at me about that!

What’s the best way to save money on your electric bill? Put the water heater on a timer. If you’re gone all day, it doesn’t need to be on. Same with the air conditioner, set it to 78 or 80 when you’re gone for the workday.

Those are going to save you a couple of bucks. And, I’m always after my kids to turn the lights off when they leave a room.

What’s the best golf movie? “Tin Cup” with Kevin Costner, and in second place, “The Greatest Game Ever Played” with Shia LaBeouf.

How big is your family? There’s me, my wife Amber, my daughter Ria, 17, David Jr., 8, and Sophia, 6. My wife home-schools all three kids and it’s working out great. David Jr. is already reading on a fifth grade level. We have four dogs — two big and two small.

What do you love about Marathon?

It’s a small town, and I get to help a lot of people. Marathon is safe and you tend to know your neighbors.

If you could have lunch or dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would that be? My dad. He had a second-grade education in Cuba, where he was a sugar cane farmer. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1968 and was working construction in Miami when he was hit in the head by a golf ball in a freak accident. He was permanently disabled, and it was just the two of us, but he fed probably five or six people a day. He was always cooking and he knew how to stretch the meals to help the people who needed it.

Who are your favorite golfers? For old-timers, I would say Ben Hogan and Moe “Pipeline” Norman. Norman shot a 59 three times and a 57 for a course record. I think he had some type of autism, and had a really strange approach to the ball, but he hit it so straight they started calling him “Pipeline.”

Anybody’s golf game that you admire today? I don’t watch very much golf any more, but I would probably say Dustin Johnson. I think he’s underrated.

What’s your best golf score? (With a huge smile) Four under par at Florida Keys Country Club. It was a beautiful thing.

Have you ever been interviewed before? This is only the second time.

The first was when there was that plane crash in Marathon on May 8, 2006 — I remember because it was my birthday and I almost took the day off. The plane crashed and me and my guys pulled out one passenger, and the Hot Arc guys pulled out the other.

The plane almost hit us.

he Monroe County Commission will have its all-day meeting on Wednesday, April 17 at the Marathon Government Center. The meetings rotate among Marathon, Key West and Key Largo.

The board will consider many items, including a special taxing district on Big Pine Key, as well as Pigeon Key Foundation’s lease of the tiny island in the middle of the 7 Mile Bridge.

“This will be our first,” said the county’s Rhonda Haag, director of sustainability, regarding the special tax zone. She said the “majority” of residents along canal No. 266 on Big Pine Key are asking the county to institute what’s called a Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU) to install an air curtain to keep the canal clean.

Although the project has not been sent out to bid, she said the air curtain and installation could cost about $100,000 — plus costs for maintenance. A neighbor must agree to allow the county to put the pump equipment on his or her property. Staff is recommending the neighbors pay $75 monthly per lot for canal maintenance.

“There are 41 lots facing the canal, owned by 25 property owners, some who own more than one lot,” said Haag.

That particular canal — considered one of the “worst” preIrma, according to Haag — was part of the county’s pilot project to address water quality issues in the Keys. The county spent approximately $1.35 million in grant money to remove 5 feet of muck,

and install and operate the air curtain. The air curtain and equipment was destroyed by the storm, but the canal’s navigability is intact, Haag said.

James and D’Ann Stone, residents who live on that particular canal, wrote in support of the subject in an email addressed to County Commissioner Michelle Coldiron.

“The project turned back the clock 50 years, and we had a clean, live marine environment opening out into near shore waters. While some weed wrack continued to ease past the curtain and aggregate in the back of the canal, it was much reduced. As a result, we support the return of the air curtain to our canal, and are willing to pay the costs to keep our backyards cleaner than they will be without it.”

Also before the commission will be the renewal of the Pigeon Key Foundation’s lease to operate on the island in the middle of the 7 Mile Bridge. The lease is for 30 years at a rate of $1 per year. Kelly McKinnon, director of the foundation, said approval is necessary for the organization’s future.

“The lease allows us to secure private benefactor funding,” McKinnon said. “People want to know that we have the county’s trust to manage the island for the long term.”

Currently, the wooden ramp that connects the Old 7 Mile Bridge to the island is undergoing $1.9 million in repairs. When the repairs to the old bridge are complete, it will allow trolley access to the island. In addition, the foundation is overseeing the restoration of historic buildings and, McKinnon said, continuing to increase its numbers of student visitors and tourists.

County launches group website for photos Monroe County’s Public Information Office launched a new “Flickr” website for public and media use of Monroe County government-related photographs at www.flickr.com/photos/monroecountybocc. The site has more than 800 images, with new pictures being added weekly. The photos feature a wide variety of subject matter arranged by subject matter and free for use in publications and on internet sites with proper attribution to the county.

Videos will also be added to the site.

CNAs are licensed by the State of Florida Board of Nursing.

BRIEFLY MHS hosts college workshop Marathon High School is hosting its annual college essay and application workshop for juniors participating in the Take Stock in Children program.

It will be presented by Katrina Wiatt on Wednesday, April 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the school media center.

T

he world’s largest anatomically correct sculpture of a Caribbean spiny lobster has been a roadside attraction on Plantation Key for decades.

Today, the iconic Islamorada lobster, named Betsy, is the second most photographed roadside attraction in the Florida Keys — the first being Key West’s Southernmost Point.

The massive crustacean stands 30 feet high and 40 feet long and was originally purchased by Tom Vellanti, who owned what was then called Treasure Village and is today home to the Treasure Village Montessori School.

Having a roadside attraction like Betsy located on school grounds proved not to be a particularly good idea, so the lobster was removed and placed in storage until she was relocated to her current resting place in the parking lot of one of the Upper Keys’ better-established artist colonies, The Rain Barrel.

Today, local politician, restaurateur and all-around community supporter “Mangrove” Mike Forster owns the lobster with his sister and brother-in-law. While everyone driving up and down the Overseas Highway sees the lobster and many of the locals know her name is Betsy, most do not realize that the sculpture was the work of Marathon artist Richard Blaze. It took Blaze five years to complete the piece of art, which was finished in the 1980s.

hronologically, this would be the third annual Marathon Games, but in reality it’s the second annual pentathlon hosted by TV 88. The five-event game plays out on Saturday, April 13 at Banana Bay resort.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the race begins at 9 a.m.

There is still space for teams and individuals to register for the race: • Swim: half-mile swim off the resort. Takes place in the Gulf, with a water start. Two laps around the marker.

• Paddleboard: One mile on a standup paddleboard, looping around two islands off of Crane Point and back.

• Kayak: One mile, see above.

• Run: One mile, two laps around the resort.

• Frisbee toss: Throw through three hoops before hitting the ground, scoring a point through each hoop.

The Frisbees, kayaks and paddleboards are all standard issue — i.e. there’s a fleet of each provided to level the playing field and athletes

will compete in heats — 10 at a time for the kayak and paddleboard portions of the race.

The event benefits 10 local nonprofits, and the proceeds of the registration fees are divided equally among them. Individuals pay $25 to race and every member of a team also pays $25 each.

“This is a great and fun way to support our local nonprofits,” said Cliff Rydell of TV 88. “Everyone is encouraged to come out and compete or volunteer. And bring a banner; the cameras will be rolling and footage used to make a movie commemorating the event.”

In 2019, the Marathon Games supports Special Olympics of Monroe County, Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys, Legion Riders, Hammock House, Take Stock in Children, Moose Lodge of Marathon, Marathon Wild Bird Center, Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, Cub Scouts of Marathon 901 and Girl Scouts of the Florida Keys.

The first-place male and female finishers in each portion of the race will win a three-day, two-night stay at a local resort.

The overall male and female winners take home a prize valued at $1,000.

LEGISLATURE WORKING THROUGH BUDGET DIFFERENCES

T

he Florida Senate and House recently passed their respective budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. While overall spending is similar, the chambers are far apart on certain line items.

During legislative session, the state House and Senate each passes a budget reflecting the chamber and its members’ priorities. On April 3, the Florida Senate was unanimous in its passage of a $90.3 billion budget. The House followed the next day with approval of an $89.9 billion budget. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget plan totaled $91.3 billion.

State Rep. Holly Raschein said the House and Senate will meet for budget conferencing as there are matters to resolve. The legislature is required to approve a single budget to send to DeSantis.

“We’re far apart on certain things, but that’s why we all get together,” Raschein said. “Hopefully we can pass a bill and get it to the governor.”

DeSantis’ budget proposed $625 million for Everglades restoration and water quality improvements. The Senate’s bill took it a step further, including $656 million. The House bill, on the other hand, is at $607 million.

As for education, the Senate’s bill increases funding by $1.1 billion, about $350 more per student, while the House measure is roughly $579 million, or $167 more per student. DeSantis’ ask was $224 more per pupil. The House and Senate also have funding differences on school mental health services and Visit Florida, the state’s official tourism marketing corporation.

BILL UPDATES STUDY LONG-TERM VESSELS On March 26, the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee unanimously approved a bill that would provide an appropriation for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to study the impacts of long-term stored vessels and certain anchored and moored vessels on local communities. Co-sponsoring the bill in the House, Raschein said there are issues where vessels become derelict and a problem on the water. She expressed support for a state plan to deal with the issue.

“Obviously, Florida is home to a number of vessels,” she said. “Imagine a number of those that get forgotten, break free or lose anchor lines and fall into a dangerous condition. They become derelict and there are a lot of issues like that. There’s also the environmental impact and they’re obviously a navigational hazard. FWC wants to take a look at this to see if we need more mooring areas or if we need to have time limits.”

“Everybody isn’t a bad apple,” she continued.

“The majority who use boats are good actors.”

The bill sits in the House State Affairs Committee and the Senate Rules Committee. State Sen. Anitere Flores is a bill cosponsor.

CRAFT DISTILLERIES Raschein is sponsoring House Bill 1229, which would allow a craft brewery to hold multiple vendors’ licenses for the sale of alcoholic beverages.

There are a few distilleries in the local community, but they’re limited in where they can conduct tastings, where they can distribute or store product and how much they can sell. Raschein said the bill seeks to level the playing field between wineries and distilleries.

“The industry is new to the scene and they’re very limited in what they can do to expand their business and their business model,” she said. “It’s a forward, pro-business-thinking bill.”

The bill was referred to the House Commerce Committee on March 26.

STATUS OF RASCHEIN-SPONSORED BILLS HB3671: Provides an appropriation of $250,000 for the Harry S. Truman Little White House rehabilitation in Key West. The bill awaits consideration from the Appropriations Committee.

HB 3673: Provides $500,000 for Monroe County Centralized Receiving Facility Behavioral Health Clinic.The center, which was built over 30 years ago, is in need of security upgrades to keep clients and staff safe. The bill sits in the Appropriations Committee.

HB3683: Provides $500,000 for Monroe County Children’s Health Center. The Florida Keys Area Health Education Center will provide no-cost primary care services through eight clinical sites to medically vulnerable children throughout Monroe County. The bill gained support from the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee and now sits in the Appropriations Committee.

SB 720 and HB 525: Renames Florida Keys Community College to The College of the Florida Keys. The bill is on the Senate Appropriations Committee’s agenda for April 11.

The bill passed the House by a 112-0 vote on March 27.

HB 4737: Provides $7.5 million for the Monroe County Emergency Operations and Public Safety Center. The bill received unanimous support from the House Transportation and Tourism Appropriations Subcommittee March 7. The bill sits in the House Appropriations Committee.

BILL EYES STATE CONTROL OVER VACATION RENTALS Senate Bill 824 would preempt the regulation of vacation rentals to the state, including but not limited to the inspection and licensing of vacation rentals.

Legislation would also eliminate grandfathered local government ordinances that have vacation rental regulations.

The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Manny Diaz Jr., is drawing some concern from Monroe County. Sen. Anitere Flores told the Weekly during a recent interview she shares those concerns about preempting something that’s “working very well in the county.”

“I think right now the regulations that Monroe County has for vacation rentals are working,” she said. “The state meddling with that is incredibly problematic.”

Flores said she’d only support the bill if there is an exemption for the county. Last year when the bill was moving ahead, Flores was able to get a carve-out for Monroe County. The bill didn’t get through the legislature, leaving vacation rental control under local governments. Flores says the path for the bill to move is increasingly challenging.

“I think it’s going to be pretty hard to get this passed. But you never know and you have to be vigilant,” she said. “If the bill’s going to move, we’re going to make sure Monroe County keeps local control.”

REMARCABLE COMMUNITY Local adult training center hosting Antique Car Show fundraiser

illy, one of MARC’s regular clients, grins as he proudly displays his freshly-baked muffins. “I like baking. I like new recipes,” he says.

MARC, short for the Monroe Association of “ReMARCable” Citizens, has served the Monroe County adult population with developmental disabilities since 1966. The nonprofit’s Upper Keys location is a vocational center and a thrift store. Tucked to the side of Coral Isles Church in Tavernier, the store is marked out front by a big, red chair with “MARC” written in rainbow letters. Inside, it bustles with activity, joy and smiles.

Each day, staff, trainers and volunteers pick up their clients and bring them to the center for adult day training and life skills work. These workshops ensure each client receives individualized support and training and include topics like money management, food service, taking care of a home, and making good social choices. The goal is to enhance each client’s individual abilities to understand daily community routines and learn social, self-care, and vocational skills.

In Tavernier, the storefront raises money for MARC and doubles as a vocational training ground. Clients train to hang clothes, sort donations, work the floor and greet customers.

“Our clients enjoy interactions with customers,” said Francine Lemay, the supported employment coordinator. “They love greeting people as they come in and building friendships.”

The store-center is all about inclusivity within the community and encourages MARC’s clients to form and enjoy relationships with nondisabled peers.

“I’m really glad we have this service for this population,” Lemay said. “Because they’re important and they deserve to be seen.” As she says so, Cinnamon, another client, flashes by, holding a gold dress off the racks.

She’s preparing for the big “Spring Into Art Antique Car Show” happening Thursday, April 11 at Coconut Cove Resort. It’s a huge fundraiser for MARC, and includes local art, antique cars, a fashion show by MARC’s clients, and much more. As Cinnamon shows off her outfit of choice, she describes how she hopes the dress will look good for the event.

Cinnamon also runs her own business — putting cards she’s painted into local stores for sale. Her MARC adult day training has helped her develop and execute her business plan. Lemay describes how she helps other clients find what they want to do: “Think about what you want to do and we’ll work on it. Maybe something with animals? Let’s try the Humane Society.”

Beyond serving this population, MARC also serves the Keys community at large. Donations that aren’t sellable are donated to the humane society, assisted living homes, and women’s and children’s shelters. Dawn, a local customer who’s been shopping at MARC for over 10 years, agrees.

“The people here — they have a huge heart,” she said. “They do great things for the community. They’ve helped my family and I through really hard stuff. I can’t ask for anything else from a shop. They’re wonderful!”

Lemay smiles as Billy helps Dawn with one of her selections. “My favorite part of all this is the clients. They bring me lots of joy. I really like being around them and seeing the world through their eyes, because everything’s great.”

amma Mia” is coming to Marathon and it’s not the 2008 classic movie or its 2018 sequel. It’s “Mamma Mia,The Musical” and will be playing Friday and Saturday, April 12-13 at Marathon High School.

Tickets are $10 and curtain goes up at 7 p.m.

With “The Wiz,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Chicago” and “Legally Blonde” under its belt, the Drama Club is ready to add another hit to its repertoire. The story features an independent lady hotelier in the Greek islands who is readying for her daughter’s wedding with the help of some girlfriends. Meanwhile her daughter has invited three men from her mother’s past, hoping to meet her biological father who might escort her down the aisle.

Sophomore Mary Ryder plays Sophie Sheridan, and she is very familiar with the stage. The 16-year-old joined Drama Club in sixth grade and has been in nine productions.

Each musical and play is chosen by students in Drama Club.

“The energy level we needed for this show was very similar to our last show, and we really enjoyed ‘Legally Blonde,’ so we wanted a similar show,” said Ryder. “It was between ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ and we definitely thought ‘Mamma Mia’ was a much better fit for our cast.”

Carmichael in the show and said that choosing musicals is all about what will be fun and enjoyable. Walters' first musical was “Chicago” when he was a freshman.

Stage manager Myreen Roxas is a senior. “Mamma Mia” will also be her final high school production. When asked about the best part about being the stage manager, she said, “I get to yell at people, but not too much. I get to have control over what should happen.” Roxas is a fan of the technical side of theater and plans on making theater her minor in college.

Carrollyn Cox is the director of “Mamma Mia.” She started teaching at Marathon High School in 2008, is a science teacher and the Academic Challenge coach. She has been involved in Drama Club ever since it was created.

She comes from a musical family and went to college for theater but “came out a biologist.” Cox described "Mamma Mia" as a “feel-good show” with classic tunes and said she hopes by the end audience members will be on their feet singing along.

ouglas Lewis from the City of Marathon explains: The trouble in general is defining “noisy.” What may seem pesky to one is considered perfectly normal to others. It is hard to draw a line between the two, but there is a sound ordinance in place and the managers of the vacation rentals are well aware of the rules and regulations; they don’t want the renters to disturb the neighbors.

Summer is approaching which means fun events and activities such as the 4th of July, Mini Lobster Season or just longer days to hang out by the pool.

Unfortunately, this can also bring noisy parties or vacation rentals full of tourists who don’t have to get up in the morning to go to work.

We all know how sound carries across the water and that late night festivities across the canal can sound like it’s in your bedroom. What is a resident to do?

If joining the party is not an option and it’s a vacation rental, you can contact the City of

Marathon to find out the name and number of the 24-hour local contact for the rental. Sometimes a phone call is all it takes.

If the noise continues and it is past the city noise ordinance hours (Sunday to Thursday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) you can call the non-emergency number for the sheriff’s office.

According to Marathon’s ordinances, it must be louder than 70 decibels, measured from at least 50 feet away on a public right of way. For comparison, a person operating a vacuum cleaner would perceive that noise at 70 decibels.

n Saturday, April 13, Mote Marine will be throwing its annual celebration of all things aquatic: Ocean Fest at Truman Waterfront Park. Mote is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution made up of renowned scientists who believe that conservation and sustainable use of oceans originates with research and education.

Founded in 1955 in Placida, Florida by Dr. Eugenie Clark, famous for her work with sharks, Mote has grown from a one room lab to a massive organization.

Mote has the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s Eco Discovery Center — adjacent to Truman Waterfront — as well as a new stateof-the-art facility The Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Restoration on Summerland Key.

Mote’s recent efforts have zeroed in on stony coral tissue loss disease, which is plaguing nearly half the coral species on the Florida Reef Tract. This deadly and rapidly spreading coral disease has pushed Mote scientists to accelerate their innovative efforts to restore the reefs with techniques like out-planting and re-skinning coral. Visitors to Mote’s Ocean Fest can learn more about coral disease and how it affects our local aquatic ecosystems.

Community comes together for great causes

A

s we move through the new month of April, let’s reflect back on the really intense and exciting month that was March in Marathon. The community came together for some amazing and important events that exemplify our status as the heart of the Keys.

The city of Key Colony Beach celebrated its birthday with a big community event known as, surprisingly enough, Key Colony Beach Day! Beginning with the Shriners’ pancake breakfast, the day included the ever-popular barracuda races, live music, vendors, and food and drink.

The Zonta Club raised money for scholarships and education with their Rubber Ducky race, and the Rotary Club of Marathon raised funds by enhancing the festivities of all the days’ attendees — we sold beer and wine.

The very next weekend, Marathon locals and visitors turned out for the social event of the year: the 43rd annual Original Marathon Seafood Festival! With more than 200 vendors, hundreds of volunteers, and generous contributions from festival goers, a lot of money was raised for local nonprofits through raffles and drawings.

The Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce and the Organized Fishermen of Florida, Marathon Chapter, use this event as their major fundraiser for the year. Two days of live music, fun activities for kids, and the best seafood around provided by our local commercial fisherman highlight the event that has become the second largest event in all of the Florida Keys.

On March 30, Marathon came together yet one more time for a worthy and important cause. Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, a celebration of cancer survivors, and a remembrance of those we have lost. Raising awareness of cancer is as important as raising money, and people from up and down the Keys come together for this worthy cause.

Main organizers Jimmy Anderson and Suzi and Scott Youngberg helped put together an event that was both fun and poignant. From participants dancing around the track as my band played “Love Shack” to the reflective luminaria ceremony, Relay offers us yet another chance to come together as a community.

And community is what the people of Marathon are all about. In times of adversity, we have each other‘s backs. In good times, we celebrate with the best. And every day in the Keys is worthy of a celebration.

ISLAND FESTIVITIES Fun on the water and land

The community came out April 6-7 for music, food, classic cars and some fun on the water as part of Island Fest. Festivities kicked off with the popular children’s “What Floaties Your Boat” homemade boat race. That was followed up by the “What Floats Your Boat” race, in which more than 10 teams competed. The weekend also brought a craft show, music from a number of bands, a car show, sand sculpture contest and the Taste of Islamorada competition that brought out top local restaurants.

Second Marathon teenager to win race in two years SARA MATTHIS

t was almost too much to hope for … that another young local would take the title of 7 Mile Bridge Run for the second year in a row. But that’s exactly what happened when Jonathan Pitchford, 16, broke the tape in 39 minutes.

Of course, the signs were auspicious. In November 2018, Pitchford placed second in the state cross country meet, with a time of 15:58 in the 5k over hilly terrain. It was a half-minute faster than his teammate, Aydan Child, 18, who placed first in last year’s 7 Mile Bridge Run with a time of 40:01.

“We hoped that he could, but we didn’t want to put undue pressure on him,” said Jonathan’s mom, Megan Richardson.

The whole family was on the course. His sister, Shannon, sang the national anthem before the race. Jonathan’s twin brother, Owen, also ran, as did Megan.

His stepfather, Dean Richardson, had the best view — he was holding the finish tape and his arms shot into the air a nanosecond after Jonathan crashed through.

There was one other “family member” on the course: Aydan.

He and the twins call themselves the “triplets.” Aydan placed fifth with a time of 42:39 and Owen placed ninth with a time of 43:32.

How did it feel to win the race? How did it feel to best Aydan, his role model?

“He is still my role model.

We always run together,” said Jonathan. “It’s good to compete with him, and have him compete with me. It’s fun to win too … but he knows what that’s like.”

How did you feel at the start of the race? I felt good. I was ready. We — Aydan, Owen and me — warmed up. At the starting line it was still cool from the sun being down. I had spent the week getting in the mindset, visualizing what I wanted to do.

What were you thinking about during the run? Oh, I don’t know. I was thinking about keeping my pace steady. I was running in third place for a while, and when I went over the hump, I got to second place. And a mile later, I was in first place, right after the fifth mile marker. I just kept working on catching the people in front of me.

How many years have you run this race? This is my third year.

running when they were about 8 years old. They competed in local 5ks held in and around St. Augustine, Florida.

“We wouldn’t train; we would just pop out on these 5k runs,” Jonathan said. “We would come first and second in our age group.

The next day was complete soreness.” Jonathan’s mom revealed she would make the boys take “turns” to come in first place.

“That’s when they were really little,” she said, laughing.

Jonathan joined the cross country team in seventh grade and then the track team in eighth grade when it was formed at Marathon Middle High School.

The MHS cross country team has made it to state level competition four years in a row. And, last year, they also sent the team of core runners to the state track meet, including Jonathan.

“Jon ran with style,” said his track and cross country coach James Murphy. “He paced himself and waited for the right moment to take over.” And then he added, “Next year, we’re going for the three-peat.”

What shoes did you race in?

Marathon High School travels up the Keys

T

he Marathon High School tennis team traveled up to Coral Shores High on April 4 to take on the Hurricanes for the last match of the season. Both the Marathon boys and girls team fell to the Hurricanes, each by the score of 6-1. Coach Richard Lorenzo said he was very proud of his team’s efforts this year. The squad boasts only four returning players, and three new team members who have never played competitive tennis. “They all practiced hard and are showing great improvement,” said Lorenzo. “They are all great kids.”

What is something most people don’t know about you? I am passionate about psychology and intend for it to be my minor in college.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher is Ms. Cox, because this year I took AP Biology and she sparked a new interest in me. Now I am considering studying biology in college. And Mrs. Heyl (who now teaches in Hawaii) taught me a lot and made my math class enjoyable.

What does “a good education” mean to you? It means that the education I have received has prepared me for college to the point where I am able to succeed.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The dumbest rule, as you have probably heard before, is not allowing hoodies to be worn in school. Especially since we have taken no other precautions, such as seethrough backpacks. The best “rule” is that upperclassmen are allowed to leave the campus for lunch.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? How important it is to always try your hardest and do your best to succeed, whether it’s grades, athletics or your character.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am a class officer, I play varsity volleyball and I’m a part of Interact and Mu Alpha Theta. These things are important to me because they keep me active and involved in the community.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend a 4-year university and acquire at least an undergraduate degree.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I enjoy spending time at the beach or on the water with friends.

Will you make Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Most likely not because I prefer big cities, where there are more opportunities and things to do.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Graduate from college with either a bachelor’s or master’s degree, have a steady job that I enjoy and own a house.
