O

n Saturday, April 13, Mote Marine will be throwing its annual celebration of all things aquatic: Ocean Fest at Truman Waterfront Park. Mote is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution made up of renowned scientists who believe that conservation and sustainable use of oceans originates with research and education.

Founded in 1955 in Placida, Florida by Dr. Eugenie Clark, famous for her work with sharks, Mote has grown from a one room lab to a massive organization.

Mote has the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s Eco Discovery Center — adjacent to Truman Waterfront — as well as a new stateof-the-art facility The Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Restoration on Summerland Key.

Mote’s recent efforts have zeroed in on stony coral tissue loss disease, which is plaguing nearly half the coral species on the Florida Reef Tract. This deadly and rapidly spreading coral disease has pushed Mote scientists to accelerate their innovative efforts to restore the reefs with techniques like out-planting and re-skinning coral. Visitors to Mote’s Ocean Fest can learn more about coral disease and how it affects our local aquatic ecosystems.

Ocean Fest is all about having fun, too. Check out live music, a painting performance by famed marine artist Wyland, and taste Florida Keys Brewing Company’s new beer for Ocean Fest: The Resistant Strain. Full schedule below.

ams Head Group has landed the gig of managing the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater. Anyone in the April 2 city commission meeting knows it was hard-won: Nadine Grossman Orr, the force behind Fantasty Fest, and her “We’ve Got the Keys” group garnered local support, while Rams Head, headed up by CEO and founder Bill Muehlhauser, ultimately won the faith — and the vote — of the commission. Pending contract negotiations, the city will hire Rams Head to manage its premier outdoor venue.

The reputation of Rams Head precedes the people behind the company: they’ve brought big-name national acts to venues around town for years. Just last weekend, the Rams Head team delivered The Beach Boys at Sunset Green Event Lawn and The Revivalists at Truman Waterfront Amphitheater.

t’s hard to miss her cobalt blue eyes and inviting smile. Jessica Long was made for marketing, full of good humor and radiating a confident business sense.

She is a Key West success story, moving here in her early 20s, bartending until pursuing and making it in the corporate world — all under age 35. Now, Long handles marketing for Ocean Properties, including Margaritaville Resort, Sunset Key Cottages, The Weatherstation Inn and The Laureate. She also is a part of the Chamber of Commerce Marketing Committee. And Long loves doing it all.

The Baltimore native got a head start on “going where life takes her” by attending college at 16 when recruited to play soccer. Long majored in theater and her first job was DJing, all of which seemed to prepare her for navigating the Key West business world. “Marketing is an everchanging job; the needs are always shifting, and it forces you to be creative — a lot like bartending,” said Long.

Ready for anything, Long is also a certified rescue diver and participated in a Guinness Book of World Records event called “All Across the Ages” for “Longest Consecutive Lacrosse Game Ever Played.”

Her charisma and savvy serve Key West well, along with a great sense of adventure and humor.

What’s the most illegal thing you’ve done?

Hmmm ... As a teenager, a few friends and I snuck over the wall of the Naval Academy in the middle of the night with the help of a few midshipmen to have a few drinks in the dorms.

I think it was mainly about the thrill. Looking back, the consequences would have been pretty bad if we had all gotten caught, but thankfully the statute of limitations has run out.

What’s something you like to do the oldfashioned way? I think homemade gifts are the best gifts.

What job would you be terrible at? I could never be a professional singer since the only song I seem to be able to master without any issues is the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” theme song.

What skill would you like to master? I would eventually like to get my pilot’s license. I’ve always really enjoyed flying.

If invisible in Key West, what would you do? I would listen in on people’s dramatic bar conversations that are none of my business. I may do a little of that anyway…

Who is your alter ego? Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannadanna might be the best way to envision my alter ego.

Full Name? Jessica Long Do you have a life credo or motto? “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” –Dr. Seuss How did you get into the hospitality industry? I moved to Key West almost 12 years ago and somehow fell into the industry. It was a big change since before my move I was DJing and acting full time in Baltimore.

What’s it like actually living and working in Margaritaville? I try to remind myself regularly how lucky I am to live in such an amazing place.

The promise of no snow and a supportive community, thrown in with the occasion sandbar happy hour on the boat after work make living here unlike anywhere else!

You are a rescue diver; any rescues, or just dive? I am a certificated rescue diver, but I only dive as a hobby. My rescue training skills have come in handy twice, just being in the right place at the right time. Luckily, both situations had happy endings.

How do you stay peaceful in a crazy town like Key West? Well, my first couple years here I had my “party pants” on just about every night, but I suppose that’s to be expected when you’re 22 and living in a vacation town. As I grew up, I’ve managed to find a nice balance between life on the island and on the water without involving too much of Duval Street … but I haven’t thrown my “party pants” away. They still make an appearance every once in a while.

Favorite guilty pleasure? A well-made Manhattan. I also can’t stop eating gummy bears.

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? I think Key West has it right with our motto of “One Human Family”; if anything, my wish would be for more places in this country to adopt that mindset and that way of living.

What quirks do you have? I have a bad habit of laughing at my own terrible jokes.

Lunch with one famous person, who would you choose? Here it goes … Gilda Radner, Sir Richard Branson, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Eleanor Roosevelt, Hunter S. Thompson. There are several more, but I’ve already broken the rules of naming just one.

My friends and family would describe me …

Well, that depends on who’s being asked. My Dad thinks I’m the reason for all his grey hair, but I’d like to think most people think I’m quite pleasant to be around.

My autobiography would be titled … “Mistakes Were Made” I can never refuse … Blue crabs — Maryland girl, born and raised!

When I go, I will go … in style or down swinging.

LEGISLATURE WORKING THROUGH BUDGET DIFFERENCES

T

he Florida Senate and House recently passed their respective budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. While overall spending is similar, the chambers are far apart on certain line items.

During legislative session, the state House and Senate each passes a budget reflecting the chamber and its members’ priorities. On April 3, the Florida Senate was unanimous in its passage of a $90.3 billion budget. The House followed the next day with approval of an $89.9 billion budget. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget plan totaled $91.3 billion.

State Rep. Holly Raschein said the House and Senate will meet for budget conferencing as there are matters to resolve. The legislature is required to approve a single budget to send to DeSantis.

“We’re far apart on certain things, but that’s why we all get together,” Raschein said. “Hopefully we can pass a bill and get it to the governor.”

DeSantis’ budget proposed $625 million for Everglades restoration and water quality improvements. The Senate’s bill took it a step further, including $656 million. The House bill, on the other hand, is at $607 million.

As for education, the Senate’s bill increases funding by $1.1 billion, about $350 more per student, while the House measure is roughly $579 million, or $167 more per student. DeSantis’ ask was $224 more per pupil. The House and Senate also have funding differences on school mental health services and Visit Florida, the state’s official tourism marketing corporation.

BILL UPDATES STUDY LONG-TERM VESSELS On March 26, the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee unanimously approved a bill that would provide an appropriation for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to study the impacts of long-term stored vessels and certain anchored and moored vessels on local communities. Co-sponsoring the bill in the House, Raschein said there are issues where vessels become derelict and a problem on the water. She expressed support for a state plan to deal with the issue.

“Obviously, Florida is home to a number of vessels,” she said. “Imagine a number of those that get forgotten, break free or lose anchor lines and fall into a dangerous condition. They become derelict and there are a lot of issues like that. There’s also the environmental impact and they’re obviously a navigational hazard. FWC wants to take a look at this to see if we need more mooring areas or if we need to have time limits.”

“Everybody isn’t a bad apple,” she continued.

“The majority who use boats are good actors.”

The bill sits in the House State Affairs Committee and the Senate Rules Committee. State Sen. Anitere Flores is a bill cosponsor.

CRAFT DISTILLERIES Raschein is sponsoring House Bill 1229, which would allow a craft brewery to hold multiple vendors’ licenses for the sale of alcoholic beverages.

There are a few distilleries in the local community, but they’re limited in where they can conduct tastings, where they can distribute or store product and how much they can sell. Raschein said the bill seeks to level the playing field between wineries and distilleries.

“The industry is new to the scene and they’re very limited in what they can do to expand their business and their business model,” she said. “It’s a forward, pro-business-thinking bill.”

The bill was referred to the House Commerce Committee on March 26.

STATUS OF RASCHEIN-SPONSORED BILLS HB3671: Provides an appropriation of $250,000 for the Harry S. Truman Little White House rehabilitation in Key West. The bill awaits consideration from the Appropriations Committee.

HB 3673: Provides $500,000 for Monroe County Centralized Receiving Facility Behavioral Health Clinic.The center, which was built over 30 years ago, is in need of security upgrades to keep clients and staff safe. The bill sits in the Appropriations Committee.

HB3683: Provides $500,000 for Monroe County Children’s Health Center. The Florida Keys Area Health Education Center will provide no-cost primary care services through eight clinical sites to medically vulnerable children throughout Monroe County. The bill gained support from the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee and now sits in the Appropriations Committee.

SB 720 and HB 525: Renames Florida Keys Community College to The College of the Florida Keys. The bill is on the Senate Appropriations Committee’s agenda for April 11.

The bill passed the House by a 112-0 vote on March 27.

HB 4737: Provides $7.5 million for the Monroe County Emergency Operations and Public Safety Center. The bill received unanimous support from the House Transportation and Tourism Appropriations Subcommittee March 7. The bill sits in the House Appropriations Committee.

BILL EYES STATE CONTROL OVER VACATION RENTALS Senate Bill 824 would preempt the regulation of vacation rentals to the state, including but not limited to the inspection and licensing of vacation rentals.

Legislation would also eliminate grandfathered local government ordinances that have vacation rental regulations.

The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Manny Diaz Jr., is drawing some concern from Monroe County. Sen. Anitere Flores told the Weekly during a recent interview she shares those concerns about preempting something that’s “working very well in the county.”

“I think right now the regulations that Monroe County has for vacation rentals are working,” she said. “The state meddling with that is incredibly problematic.”

Flores said she’d only support the bill if there is an exemption for the county. Last year when the bill was moving ahead, Flores was able to get a carve-out for Monroe County. The bill didn’t get through the legislature, leaving vacation rental control under local governments. Flores says the path for the bill to move is increasingly challenging.

“I think it’s going to be pretty hard to get this passed. But you never know and you have to be vigilant,” she said. “If the bill’s going to move, we’re going to make sure Monroe County keeps local control.”

KEY LIME LOVE BRING BACK “OLD SOUR”

“O

ld sour” is a Conch tradition that has shaped the stories of our Key lime culture for generations. Fermented Key lime juice, salt and an David Sloan optional bird pepper band together to create this culinary delight and, historically, it has been added to just about everything to come out of a Conch kitchen.

Even the earliest Key lime pies were probably made with old sour, but through the years, our fair lady has become an endangered species and it is now up to us to save her.

Old sour probably originated with Bahamian Conchs looking to preserve the juice of local limes. Salt was a known preservative.

Combining the two and storing them away from sunlight caused the juice to ferment into a tangy and zesty liquid. Bird peppers added the kick many crave.

A 1905 article about Key West in “The Country Gentleman” reads: “The lime is the main source of commercial citric acid. Thousands of over-ripe limes which rot on the ground could be utilized. In the early days, these limes were planted, no doubt, to supply wreckers and pirates with “sour” for the prevention of scurvy.” The statement confirms the idea that old sour, like condensed milk, was an important dietary supplement for sailors in our local waters.

In time, old sour evolved from a boat vitamin to the queen of most kitchens in the Keys. Jerry Curry and Max Foster each recall a childhood where the table wasn’t set until the Crystal hot sauce and old sour were out. The book “Turtle In Paradise” by Jennifer Holm describes cut-ups held by local children during the Depression. For a cut-up, each child brought in whatever food they found lying around or hanging from a tree to be cut up.The odd mix was placed in a large bowl, doused with old sour, and then passed around with a fork for each child to enjoy.

Pineapple, guava, sugar apples, alligator pears, potatoes and onions were all used, with old sour added liberally to amp up each ingredient’s value as a treat.

Peter Krynicki told a story to The Hemingway Project about Ernest Hemingway and his “mob”getting together at Charles Thompson’s Fleming Street home, “where Phoebe (the cook) delighted the group with raw conch salad laced with onions and a spicy Key lime and salt brine sauce made locally and called Old Sour, a concoction Ernest continually called ‘Old Oscar.’”

No matter that he got the name wrong.

Just as with Hemingway, the flavor of old sour earned a place in the history and hearts of people throughout the Keys.

Newspaper articles from the archives are peppered with tales from tourists describing their first old sour encounter at A&B Lobster House. Old society columns feature locals debating “the right way to do it” regarding peppers, refrigeration and the proper color for an old sour bottle. For a time, old sour was a staple in just about every restaurant in the Keys. Many of them kept a bottle on every table, but those days have gone. Conchs like Sheila SandsDevendorf may surprise you with a bottle, and Chris Rehm might serve it to you at his home, but you would be hard pressed to find a restaurant with a ready bottle of old sour today.

Together we can change that. Chef Martha Hubbard serves up old sour at her Conch Revival Picnic. Charlie Bauer is going to set a bottle on every table at Smokin’ Tuna Saloon. Travis Doll is bringing it back to A&B Lobster House. Bobby Mongelli is going to put old sour on tables at Hogfish Bar & Grill and Geiger Key Marina.

You can help too. Old sour is simple to make. Mix up a batch at home and pass a few bottles on to friends. Drop off a bottle at your favorite restaurant. Share this article and the attached recipe with everyone you know involved with a restaurant in the Florida Keys, and request a little ol’ sour every time you dine.

No matter how your first batch of old sour turns out, you can take satisfaction in knowing that you are experiencing a great Conch tradition, and doing your part to keep an important part of our history alive. And I guarantee you, every drop is going to be heavenly . ..just like the fabulous Florida Keys.

or each pint of freshly squeezed ripe lime juice (be sure none of the limes is the least bit spoiled, for this will ruin an entire batch), add one tablespoon of salt, stirring until dissolved.

Allow to stand at room temperature for an hour or so. Strain at least twice through a fine sieve or double layers of cheesecloth, until juice runs through freely. Place in tightly covered bottles, adding hot peppers to some of the bottles if desired. Store in a dark, cool place (not under refrigeration) for at least one month prior to using as a super seasoning liquid with just about everything. Add old sour carefully, since it is rather formidable in its concentration.

ALMOST SOUTHERNMOST KEY WEST HISTORY

T

he most photographed roadside attraction in the Florida Keys is the concrete “buoy” at the corner of Whitehead and South streets that claims to mark the southernmost point in the contiguous 48 states.

Though an iconic Key West experience and the one picture every visitor seeks to snap, the Southernmost Point is not even the southernmost spot on Key West.

Though not accessible to the public, the southernmost point on Key West is a little piece of land jutting out from the island called Whitehead Spit.

Even this, however, is not the southernmost spot in the contiguous 48 states. That location is actually Ballast Key, located eight miles from Key West. The island is also the site of the southernmost private home or, at least it was.

The island, part of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, now belongs to the government and the southernmost private house is now a research center. Because Whitehead Spit and Ballast Key are not readily accessible, the 12-foot tall, 7-foot wide concrete buoy was created, dedicated on Sept. 10, 1983, and declared the Southernmost Point.

T

he Monroe County Commission will have its all-day meeting on Wednesday, April 17 at the Marathon Government Center. The meetings rotate among Marathon, Key West and Key Largo.

The board will consider many items, including a special taxing district on Big Pine Key, as well as Pigeon Key Foundation’s lease of the tiny island in the middle of the 7 Mile Bridge.

“This will be our first,” said the county’s Rhonda Haag, director of sustainability, regarding the special tax zone. She said the “majority” of residents along canal No. 266 on Big Pine Key are asking the county to institute what’s called a Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU) to install an air curtain to keep the canal clean.

Although the project has not been sent out to bid, she said the air curtain and installation could cost about $100,000 — plus costs for maintenance. A neighbor must agree to allow the county to put the pump equipment on his or her property. Staff is recommending the neighbors pay $75 monthly per lot for canal maintenance.

“There are 41 lots facing the canal, owned by 25 property owners, some who own more than one lot,” said Haag.

That particular canal — considered one of the “worst” preIrma, according to Haag — was part of the county’s pilot project to address water quality issues in the Keys. The county spent approximately $1.35 million in grant money to remove 5 feet of muck,

and install and operate the air curtain. The air curtain and equipment was destroyed by the storm, but the canal’s navigability is intact, Haag said.

James and D’Ann Stone, residents who live on that particular canal, wrote in support of the subject in an email addressed to County Commissioner Michelle Coldiron.

“The project turned back the clock 50 years, and we had a clean, live marine environment opening out into near shore waters. While some weed wrack continued to ease past the curtain and aggregate in the back of the canal, it was much reduced. As a result, we support the return of the air curtain to our canal, and are willing to pay the costs to keep our backyards cleaner than they will be without it.”

Also before the commission will be the renewal of the Pigeon Key Foundation’s lease to operate on the island in the middle of the 7 Mile Bridge. The lease is for 30 years at a rate of $1 per year. Kelly McKinnon, director of the foundation, said approval is necessary for the organization’s future.

“The lease allows us to secure private benefactor funding,” McKinnon said. “People want to know that we have the county’s trust to manage the island for the long term.”

Currently, the wooden ramp that connects the Old 7 Mile Bridge to the island is undergoing $1.9 million in repairs. When the repairs to the old bridge are complete, it will allow trolley access to the island. In addition, the foundation is overseeing the restoration of historic buildings and, McKinnon said, continuing to increase its numbers of student visitors and tourists.

Muehlhauser, who also has been a full-time Key Wester for 10 years, said, “We are excited to take our years of experience in developing the Key West Amphitheater into a nationally recognized facility for entertainment and civic functions.

We will accomplish this by hiring a local workforce to work alongside our existing Rams Head team.”

At Key West Theater, the group has used local musical talent as opening acts for national bands and employed security, box-office staff, ushers and bartenders from our local labor pool.

“I’ve worked nationally and locally,” said Norman, who has previously booked music for Blue Macaw and Little Room Jazz Club.

“My husband Nick is a local musician that created the Sunday Ramble, and we have valuable relationships with Key West musicians.” In her role at the Key West theater, Norman

has worked with Ralph DePalma on community events and Kyla Piscopink on community dance classes.

While Rams Head has already showcased its potential to book big acts at the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater, it will not have an exclusive booking contract with the venue. As the managing agency, Rams Head will work with other organizations to provide a variety of events to the community. The RFQ they presented to the city commission showed 10 major shows on the docket, in line with previous visiting bands like Blue Oyster Cult, Styx and Avett Brothers, which will share the stage with local shows and civic activities.

Norman cites their master calendar, a booking and management tool that creates space for a variety of different events, organizations and talents. Their system puts a “hold” on dates, allowing multiple proposals to be deliberated before confirming an event.

The proposal also outlines new hires: Rams Head will be seeking a venue manager and marketing manager, starting with Key West talent.

Said Norman: “We are very excited, to say the least, but know there’s a lot of hard work ahead — not to mention a contract to still sign!”

Organizers David Sloan and Heather-May Potter, Liz Love, Marky Pierson and Co. of Wonderdog Studios, and Morgan Fraga again banded together to throw the Cow Key Channel Zero K “Pirates of the Cowibbean”-themed event and outrageous after-party.

The noon run and “Golden Calf Awards” afterward recognized best relay team (“Milk Cartel”), best dog and human costume (“Hotdog and Hamburger”) best (“Cowibbean King” and “Cowibbean Queen”) and worst costumes (“Cow Patty”) and fastest and slowest run times. The awards and a killer dance party at Sunset Green Event Lawn made it a day to remoooomber.

I

f you’ve lived in the Keys for a while, you’ve been through a hurricane or three.

And on the epidemic front, Dr. Stanley Sack you might have seen the effect on our town of the early years of HIV. Events like these, especially in the early stages, have quite a lot in common—particularly the questions that you might ask. Is this serious? Will I be affected? What can or should I do to protect myself? And, not insignificantly: should I panic?

When a new, potentially significant problem lurks in the shadows, professionals and public officials ask the same questions and do their best to find the answers. Sometimes finding the answers takes a little time.

This appears to be the case with an emerging illness known as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), which has people talking.

AFM is a disease that mainly affects infants and young children.

An affected child can start out with symptoms that look like an ordinary cold. Subsequently, however, AFM causes changes in the spinal cord, that structure in our backs which connects the brain with the body’s nerves. The result is that patients become weak, especially in the legs and/or arms, and have difficulty moving. Speech, swallowing and breathing can be affected as well.

Currently there’s no definitive treatment, though many remedies have been proposed; physical therapy and watchful waiting are about it.

Patients recover slowly and, at times, not completely, and serious complications may result.

Technically, AFM is not a “new” disease. The reason we’re more concerned about it now is that the number of children with it has skyrocketed. While still quite rare, there have been over 550 cases in the US since August of 2014 — a dramatic increase. Just last year, there were 228 cases.

We don’t know why this sudden spike has occurred, but in cases like this, experts usually look to either a new infection or something in the environment. In the cases of Legionnaire’s disease and AIDS, two “new” illnesses in past years, similar questions were asked and infections were ultimately found to be the cause.

AFM is currently most likely thought to be the result of a virus. One possibility is that it’s from a type of enterovirus, a family of germs which causes several childhood diseases (handfoot-mouth is an enteroviral disease).

However, there’s much more work to be done before we know more.

Until we do have more knowledge, we can’t really answer those questions posed at the start of this column. However, most experts would offer a few guidelines here, similar to what’s offered up with any new illness. I’ve never been fond of overusing mnemonics, which one finds all the time in medicine. But like my favorite foods, everything seems to gravitate toward the letter “P” Don’t Panic. Few cases of AFM appear to have developed in Florida, and Dr. Mark Whiteside, medical director at the Monroe County Department of Public Health, tells me that he hasn’t yet seen any here.

Prepare yourself with knowledge about the disease. Information is always being updated; doctors at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases published a new report just last week. A great user-friendly source of information is the website of The Centers for Disease Control: www. cdc.gov/acute-flaccid-myelitis Always talk to your Pediatric Provider about any concerning symptoms in your child, such as increased difficulty moving, eating or talking. · This is a good time to do a little cheerleading for the Polio vaccine.

While AFM is NOT polio, the diseases share some traits, and the polio virus is also an enterovirus. Let’s take care of what we do know how to Prevent!

pplications are open for Key West Literary Seminar’s summer program for local high school students, the “Young Writers Studio.” This five-day writing program will take place June 24-28 in Key West. Writers or would-be-writers of all levels can apply at kwls.org/young-writers.

Priority deadline is May 1.

Participants will explore Key West and learn about great authors who have lived and worked here, including Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Bishop, Wallace Stevens and James Merrill. The program emphasizes journaling, close observation and site-specific writing exercises, together with constructive feedback and group critique.

Each afternoon will feature a writing workshop led by Nicole Dennis-Benn, acclaimed novelist and lecturer in the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University. The week’s site-specific writing will culminate with a special daylong excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park.

“We want to give local high school students an opportunity to discover their home in the Keys as writers,” says Arlo Haskell, executive director of the Key West Literary Seminar and a 1996 Key West High School graduate. “The Keys are unique, and many of the writers who lived here left behind resources that can be used to strengthen writing skills and develop critical thinking.”

The second annual program is open to students in Monroe County who will be starting their sophomore, junior or senior years in fall 2019. Students who are home-schooled or have unconventional educational backgrounds are equally encouraged to apply. The program is free for selected applicants, thanks in part to a grant from Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge.

orld War II remains a timeless backdrop for page-turning novels.

From the suspense of battle to historical significance, the new novel “The Lost Girls of Paris” by Pam Jenoff takes readers back to this tumultuous time, inspired by actual events. Coming to Books & Books on Wednesday, April 17, Jenoff will be holding a discussion and book signing for her latest novel.

Jenoff, the author of national bestseller “The Orphan’s Tale,” also set in World War II, uses the same artistic reimagining of actual events through fictional eyes. This time, she draws from real-life British Special Operations Executive (SOE) Vera Atkins’ remarkable story of running a covert ring of British women as intelligent agents during the final days of the war. They were ordinary women working undercover in France before D-Day to help the British defeat Germany. During the final days of the war, many were captured, killed or lost. Their fate became a quest for Atkins, who considered them “her girls” and their loss hers.

“The Lost Girls of Paris” is more than Atkins’ story; it’s the weaving together of three different female characters and their subsequent war stories. The novel begins in 1946 post-war New York, following Grace Healey, the widow of an American soldier. Grace finds the suitcase of British SOE officer Eleanor Trigg, the Atkins character, and she begins to unfold the tale of 12 lost SOE women agents. Through photographs, she follows the trail of Eleanor’s pursuit of her “lost girls” and is drawn to

know their fate as well. For Grace, having lost her husband and found freedom outside the bounds of marriage, the plight of the girls becomes not only intriguing but relevant.

The story goes back in time to 1944, when Eleanor recruits the women. One, young mother Marie Roux, emerges as an unlikely undercover agent. The story follows Marie’s difficult choice to leave her daughter, support the British cause and ultimately sacrifice almost everything to win the war.

The underbelly of this novel follows the resilience and bravery of many women who largely went unnoticed. The characters of Grace, Eleanor and Marie exude a determination unusual for its time. The novel is a celebration of women’s natural independence, allegiance and intelligence during the direst of circumstances. All the female characters demonstrate a willingness to serve not just others but also themselves.

Jenoff’s writing is decidedly in-the-moment and does not wax poetic: it’s more about action than description. A fast-paced novel, it’s an easy read with a great premise. This book goes well with a beach chair or a comfy sofa on the weekend, a nice break from the turmoil in this century.

PRIVATE ISLAND DONATED TO NATURE CONSERVANCY, FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE

avid Wolkowsky’s Ballast Key, a 14-acre island located in the clear blue and vibrant waters eight miles west of Key West, has been generously donated and will be forever protected through the commitment of The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge (Key West NWR). For more than two decades, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (the Service) worked closely with Mr. Wolkowsky to preserve the island’s natural and historical values. The partners are now collaborating to manage and conserve the island sanctuary and fulfill Mr. Wolkowsky’s vision to safeguard the subtropical gem and support marine and coastal scientific research and education. In recognition of Mr. Wolkowsky’s commitment to preservation and philanthropy, the Service is working to rename the island “David Wolkowsky Key.” “David Wolkowsky’s incredible generosity and dedication to this special island ensures lasting protection and a legacy of conservation, which will benefit nature and wildlife, scientists, students, and the

The island is home to many imperiled and endangered species of native plants and wildlife, and the shallow waters that surround the key teem with inhabitants of a healthy coral reef ecosystem including threatened and endangered sea turtles. Mr. Wolkowsky began his stewardship of the island in the early 1970s, carefully developing and managing the property in an environmentally sensitive way to ensure that he would be a good neighbor to the surrounding islands. As a well-known and impactful public figure, developer, philanthropist and visionary, he welcomed many guests to Ballast Key including Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, British Prime Minister Edward Heath, Nancy Sinatra, Leonard Bernstein, and Prince Michael of Greece. Mr. Wolkowsky arranged to donate the island to protect it from a future of development and offer its wealth of natural resources and beauty to conservation purposes, prior to his passing at the age of 99 in September 2018.

“From the way the tides flow through the flats to the glimmers of migrating tarpon, this place was David’s home. He wanted it protected for generations to come. We’re honored to help carry out his legacy,” stated the Wolkowsky family.

Ballast Key is the final piece of the Key West NWR, established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt as a preserve and breeding ground for nesting wading birds and other wildlife. The refuge consists of the Marquesas Keys and 13 other keys set in over 375 square miles of open water. For more than 110 years the refuge has been managed to preserve quality, character and integrity of these protected wilderness lands and open waters, and since that time, Ballast Key has been the only remaining private property within the refuge. The area from Ballast Key west, out to and including the Marquesas region, is remote, and a research facility on Ballast Key will enable additional study of the region.

“David Wolkowsky was keenly aware of Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation vision for the Florida Keys and wanted his legacy to be a part of that,” said Leopoldo Miranda, regional director for the Service’s Southeast Region. “The donation of his Ballast Key completes the Key West National Wildlife Refuge.”

BABY ON THE WAY

O

n April 5, long-distance swimmer and motivational speaker Diana Nyad brought her EverWalk team back to Big Pine to help Habitat for Humanity build and rebuild homes. Nyad has been a Keys celebrity since 2013, for swimming unassisted from Havana to Key West at age 64, and she’s continued to give back to the community.

Susan Kent, family services director for Habitat, said, “This is the second year with Diana bringing her EverWalk group here and working with us.”

The Habitat team was working on four houses on Big Pine, doing everything from roofing, siding and finishing work. Habitat’s Critical Repair Program has been working feverishly in the Lower Keys since the ravages of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Habitat for Humanity of Key West and the Lower Keys was also recognized at the Partners in Paradise Awards on April 5. Habitat was honored as the local nonprofit making the biggest impact on affordable housing and hurricane recovery.

“We’re glad to be working together at making a bigger impact on the Lower Keys and improving every day,” said Executive Director Greg Brown. The good news for homeowners still recovering from Irma? Habitat is continuing to help.

“If there are folks who are still negotiating with the county or their insurance companies and looking for assistance, we do have a sliding scale and financial guidelines to work with applicants,” Kent said, “We are still taking applications.” Kent also said that they are still looking for volunteers for the spring and summer, “even if it’s just for one day.” For more information on applications for assistance or volunteering contact volunteer@habitatlowerkeys.org.

‘MOM DATING’ FINDING YOUR MATCH IN MOTHERHOOD

A Touch of Grey and a Ton of Music

H

elicopter mom. Snack mom. Crunchy organic mom. Wine mom. Hot mess mom. So many types of moms. How does one find her mom bestie in a sea of women? Especially in a sea of those who all believe the way they delivered and are raising their “LO” is the best way (“Little one,” according to the “I read all the mom blogs mom”).

I recently met my childhood best friend wasin Miami for a girls’ weekend sans kids. Her daughter just turned 1, and it was the first time she was away from her. She was in need of a damn drink (or 10). We drank champagne on the beach all day and had a dance party in our room the rest of the night. It was perfect and just what she needed. The next evening at happy hour she opened up about how lonely she is since becoming a new mother. Pre-baby, she had a vibrant social life and a slew of good friends. She was in dire need of a mom friend to commiserate and have cocktails with. Let me be clear, no matter what kind of mom you are, you need mom friends.

Because no matter how close you are with someone, if you birth a human and your friend has not, they simply will not understand the complicated and multi-layered life you now have.

After a few glasses of bubbly, she pulls out her phone and opens up Peanut, a mom friending app, where she had created a profile but had not checked on it since (truly, they have apps for everything today — it blows my mind!).

And behold, she had three unread messages! We were ecstatic, and of course, I wanted to personally respond to all of them extremely inappropriately to make sure her potential new mom-mates had a sense of humor. Heather, smartly, would not let me near her phone.

But she did get a few “dates” set up, and we’re hopeful she’ll meet a potential match.

It’s just like being in the dating world again, on a totally different level. Will she like me? Should I filter myself a little the first time so

I don’t scare her off? Is her kid an asshole? What if she thinks my kid is an asshole?

I thought finding my mom friends would be challenging due to the fact that A) I drink vodka, not wine (less sugar = no hangover) B) I swear like a sailor and C) I am the polar opposite of a helicopter mom or germaphobe. In fact, if my kid isn’t choking, drowning or at risk of death I’m pretty cool with it.

Maybe “pretty cool with it” is just my type of mom-ing.

I don’t think anyone is the “right” type of mom, though, definitely not myself. I believe it’s just about finding other moms who are similar enough in parenting style and who accept you for all your inevitable mom fails. Many, many mom fails.

I let my kids jump off things that are probably too high. I let them eat snacks off the floor — good for the immune system, I say.

I’m SO far from being a perfect mom, but I love them with every single ounce of my being. And that’s what ties all of us different moms together. No matter the type of parent you are, we all love our little assholes to death. And we can certainly find common ground in that.

Mom-ing is hard. It’s by far the toughest thing I’ve ever done.

It’s made easier having women in your life who can relate, who can laugh with you at the crazy times, cry with you at the scary times, and be with you on the nights it just all seems too overwhelming. We are all doing our best, some days thinking, “Yes, I’ve got this” and others, “I have no clue what the hell I’m doing.”

Put yourself out there, try not to judge, and most certainly bring the wine (or vodka). Now get out there and get your mom game on.

“SEX WITH STRANGERS” OPENS AT WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE

I

t’s an age-old question: how well do you know a person?

In today’s sea of technology, social media and fame, how can a person even be trusted to be who they are? Laura Eason, a writer from the hit series “House of Cards,” wrote the insightful comedy “Sex With Strangers,” now playing at The Waterfront Playhouse. Like the show, this play is fast-paced, filled with contemporary conversations and thoughtful questions about love in the time of technology. Delving into relationships like a butcher exposing the heart of the beast, “Sex with Strangers” leaves audiences raw and open, looking at love.

Ethan and Olivia surprisingly meet the old-fashioned way, in person. Actor Tim Torre is a tour de force as Ethan, a twenty-something millennial full of vanity and indiscretion. He seeks out his idol, novelist Olivia, a late 30-something played by a captivating Melanie Keller. Holed up in a remote cabin during a snowstorm without the internet, the opportunity unfolds to get to know each other. Initially, they appear polar opposites and a generation different, although both are writers. Ethan is the technology-addicted sensationalist who claimed internet stardom with a blog about “Sex with Strangers.”

Ethan admits “The tasteless youth of the world put me on the best seller list” and despairs, “If I can’t go online, people will think I am dead.”

While he capitalizes on the selfie culture, Olivia is the epitome of the traditional novelist. She likes the smell of old books, publishing houses versus eBooks and writes for herself, not others. The couple begins the push and pull of an unlikely but predictable romance.

Olivia becomes the yin to Ethan’s yang, bringing out the best but also the worst in their vanities; they are both writers after all.

“Isn’t there anything you want to keep private?” says Olivia.

“I guess not,” responds Ethan.

Olivia recoils at seeing “anonymous strangers saying horrible, misspelled things about my work.”

Ethan cajoles Olivia to put her work back out there, which also invites the real world into their relationship and the questions abound.

Can their egos and hearts handle an audience? How far will they go to get what they want and stay in relationship? And ultimately, how well do they know each other?

“Sex with Strangers” is undoubtedly a comedy, full of quick one-liners and contemporary sarcasm. It’s not above making fun of generational power struggles and romantic fallacies; anyone can relate who has ever delved into love during the time of tech.

D

iving off the Philippine Islands in the Pacific, I photographed what they called “turkeyfish.” In places, these were the only species of fish in abundance. Members of Scorpaenidae family, these beautiful fish remained perfectly still suspended in the water column, brightly colored red and white spines deployed, large mouths poised to devour prey.

Lionfish have a variety of other names, including turkeyfish in the Philippines, as well as zebrafish and filefish. They’re all exotic and beautiful fish to behold. They became aquarists’ dream fish, decorating salt-water tanks with resplendent beauty. Their popularity waned when admirers found the species had voracious appetites and quickly devoured other small tropicals in tanks with them. Not wanting to kill their magnificent fish, thoughtless saltwater aquarium owners dumped them

into the Atlantic Ocean. When Hurricane Andrew destroyed a large seaquarium in Miami, it was reported that six lionfish were blown into Biscayne Bay. Some postulate that ocean-going ships from the Pacific Ocean emptied them when they released water from ballast tanks.

Whatever the origin of the first lionfish invasion of the Atlantic Ocean regions off Florida and the Caribbean, they have proliferated as an invasive species and continue to menace other tropical reef fish.

Not particularly large species, Pterois range from tiny juveniles about 2 inches in length to adults that can be 18 inches long weighing up to three pounds. These are long-lived fish that remain in the reef environment for some 15 years without predators. Females reproduce every month, releasing upwards of 15,000 eggs.

In the Philippines, I found turkeyfish to be aggressive. When I would approach to take a photograph they would aim their venomous spines at me and prepare for an attack. With specialized muscles that control swim bladders, lionfish species can remain poised in the water column or on reefs, ready to attack prey.

Lionfish are not only exotic, they are dangerous. Stings from venomous spines cause immediate pain and swelling. The venom breaks up under extreme heat. Divers who have been stung are told to immerse their hands in water of 120 degrees to break down the poison. Usual sting relief options such as vinegar do not work on lionfish stings.

People who are allergic to stings or have compromised health must exercise extreme caution. “Look but don’t touch” is the key. Divers are stung more often while spearing lionfish than accidentally coming in contact with their spines.

In attempts to reduce the impact of lionfish on Florida reefs, Keys Marine Sanctuary officials have permitted harvesting them within sanctuary boundaries. Elsewhere in Florida there are organized efforts to reduce populations of lionfish, including lionfish derbies or contests with prizes for the largest catch.

While there are no natural predators in the Atlantic Ocean to prey on lionfish, divers spearing them have begun to get sharks, groupers and moray eels to eat them. In some cases divers cut spines off before offering them to these reluctant predators. The hope is to get them to eat lionfish on their own in the wild.

Jason Adams takes a trident pole spear with him on every dive out of Islamorada. Adams, operations manager for Key Dives, encourages divers he takes underwater to spot lionfish for him. Under pressure from spear fishers, lionfish have become wary. The once easy shot is not always so, since they tend to flee in popular dive sites when they sense divers’ bubbles and the approach of a spear-wielding diver.

“We have permits from NOAA and the Marine Sanctuary to spear lionfish in areas where no harvesting of anything is allowed,” said Mike Goldberg, owner of Key Dives.

He has run dive operations in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where lionfish were known to wipe out populations of small reef fish. “Nothing preys on them underwater and they reproduce rapidly. We have found a dozen and more juvenile fish inside the stomachs of larger lionfish. They can wipe out an entire reef population,” he said.

When Adams speared a lionfish that sought refuge under a coral head, a small nurse shark appeared. He did not use shears to cut off its spines. He wears special teflon gloves that do not allow spines to penetrate. The nurse shark is now trained to eat lionfish.

it in its mouth. Another speared lionfish was offered to a green moray eel. The eel came out of its niche and grabbed the lionfish off Adams’ spear.

It was in the early 1990s that a friend came aboard a dive boat and told me he photographed a lionfish on Florida’s Atlantic coast off Delray Beach.

I was enthused by the prospect of photographing it, received a good description of the location, went back underwater and took the picture. That was the first. Since then lionfish continue to be a favorite photographic subject with colorful venomous spines deployed. They are found underwater all along Florida’s coast.

The flesh, once spines have been cut off and fillets made, is white and among the besttasting fish to be had. Prices in markets offer lionfish from $7.99 a pound and more. Restaurants have begun featuring lionfish on menus. Since the fish are relatively small, it takes a lot of fillet from smaller ones to create a pound. Spear fishing for lionfish, going to the extra effort of filleting them, is still a cottage industry in Florida. Hopefully with the dedication of divers from Key Dives and many other dive operators and private spear fishing enthusiasts the population will be controlled.

“They are in deeper water where not too many divers go now,” Goldberg said. One diver descended to the edge of a deep reef in over 100 feet of water.

It was not a spectacular reef; however, it yielded a catch of 20 lionfish. Because of the rate of reproduction, NOAA estimates that sustained harvest of 27 percent of the population is required every month to control the population.

Divers are doing their part.

Slowly, popularization of lionfish as food is gaining acceptance as a delicacy. The key in any of this is to educate people that disposing of exotic species of any kind, be they snakes or tropical aquarium fish, will harm Florida’s environment on land and underwater.

he second annual Key West Yoga Fest took place April 6 and 7, on Higgs Beach and at the Southernmost Mansion, respectively. Yoga classes were augmented by unconventional offerings like aerial workshops with Kelly’s Aerial Arts and Fitness, music from a variety of talents, including Ross Brown and DJ Drez and Marti Nikko as well as musical yoga classes taught by Dawn Feinberg and Marlene Koenig. Yoga Fest offered workshops against a beautiful backdrop of sand and sea. Partnering companies like The Green Pineapple sold apparel and accessories, while The Raw Machine food truck provided the tastiest and healthiest juices and foods around.

1. Kelly Goss, of Kelly’s Aerial Arts & Fitness, offers aerial workshops on the beach. Goss moved down to Key West as a private massage therapist for a client who enabled her to travel the world. She found an incredible outlet for energy and creativity in pole fitness and opened her own business (she also has earned multiple international titles!).

What’s the dumbest rule at your school? Hands down the dumbest policy here is drug-testing student athletes. It is only designed to infringe on their personal liberties — I’ve never heard of a student quitting drugs long-term because of this.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? You can’t go looking for friends and expect to find the right ones. Focus on yourself and the right people will come along for the ride!

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS? Band is pretty much my whole life. My first day at KWHS was band camp, and I’m ready for everyone to play me out at graduation.

Academic challenge is another club I’ve been in — I’m so glad we made it to state competition this year.

What are your plans after high school? Going to college to figure out what I’m doing from there.

What do you hope to be remembered for at KWHS? I want my teachers and peers to look back and think, “She’s probably doing something revolutionary right now.”

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My all time favorite teacher is Mrs. Pamela Smith, because she taught me to be compassionate and kind through her own example.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? Trying out new crafts and hobbies. I’m interested in different types of traditional art, and I play video games.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? No, there’s an entire world I want to go explore, and I don’t want to limit myself to here.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10year reunion? First, to have my art exhibited in a gallery or published, to become fluent in another language and to buy my dream car: A new Tesla Roadster.
