In the wake of the Christchurch, New Zealand mass shooting, in which 50 people were killed, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spearheaded legislation to ban military style semi-automatic weapons and buy back those already in circulation. Yet the United States has yet to enact similar legislation. Closer to home, Monroe County schools have adopted new safety measures postSpring Break. All teachers are now required to lock their classrooms from the inside while students are present. The doors will only be accessible by key from the outside and can be opened without a key from within. This is a component of “best practices” that were established after the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012, and Monroe County has recently adopted this, among other policies, as requisite in schools. We asked local parents:

I read yesterday that more American children die from gunshot wounds than soldiers and policeman combined. Olivia’s school, a charter school on a military base, has the presence of one police officer which is also a requirement. I hope that’s enough. I hope not to see more officers at school. I hope the teachers never have to arm themselves. So if the door has to be locked, so be it.

My opinion: Locking a classroom door is not the “end all” solution but it is a safety measure that has been adopted at my daughter’s school and has been successful with making the children feel “safe”. State passes bill making medical marijuana ‘smokeable’ SARA MATTHIS

n March 18, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law making it legal for patients who have prescriptions for medical marijuana to smoke it.

Previously, patients with prescriptions could only receive low-THC cannabis in pill, patch or tincture forms. According to the state Department of Health, there are currently 15 doctors in Monroe County who have qualified to prescribe marijuana.

In 2016, more than 70 percent of voters in Florida approved a constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana, but the Legislature passed a bill a year later that year that banned it in smokeable forms.

After signing the new law, DeSantis moved to dismiss a lawsuit that named the state Department of Health and undo a lower court decision which held the law to be unconstitutional.

• Felons' rights, CB CRJ 19-03: a house bill that codifies 2018’s Amendment 4 that relates to felon rights. The amendment restores voting rights of Floridians with felony convictions (except for murder and sexual offenses) after they complete all terms of their sentence and probation. The bill currently before the Florida legislature would expand the definition of sex offenders, as well as require felons to pay back all court fees and fines before having voting rights restored.

• Animal cruelty, SB 1738: This Senate bill would make it a first-degree misdemeanor to leave a dog restrained outside and unattended during a manmade or a natural disaster, such as a hurricane.

• Maritime law, SB 1666: This Senate bill could limit the stay of vessels outside of permitted, public mooring fields such as the outskirts of Boot Key Harbor in Marathon. It would prohibit the owner, operator or person in charge of a vessel from anchoring or mooring outside of public mooring fields for longer than a specified period of time, perhaps 60 days, before requiring the relocation or removal of the vessel.

y 1928 it was possible to drive an automobile from Miami to Key West. Well, not all the way to Key

West.

The first iteration of the road that would become the Overseas Highway was created with a significant gap, requiring a four-hour, 40-mile trip aboard an automobile ferry. Drivers would board the ferry at Lower Matecumbe Key and disembark at No Name Key where it was then possible to drive the rest of the way to Key West.

The ferry system was not the most reliable source of transportation which is why, in 1934, World War I veterans were brought to the Keys to begin building a series of concrete structures that would bridge the gap.

On Sept. 2, 1935, the Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane destroyed 40 miles of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad and took hundreds of lives, including those of more than 200 veterans.

It was decided that instead of repairing the train tracks, the standing train bridges would be widened to create automobile bridges. The Key West Citizen announced on March 28, 1938, “Several Thousand Automobiles And 10,000 Visitors Expected To Arrive In Key West During Next Few Days.” This new iteration of the Overseas Highway would travel over the Upper Keys, pass through the Middle Keys, and create a direct path from the mainland to Key West when it re-opened to traffic on March 29, 1938.

Recycling rates are increasing, but so is ‘contamination’ SARA MATTHIS

ery few of us would consider it an ethical choice — whether to buy Corona beer in bottles or cans.

The layperson shrugs a shoulder … both cans and bottles can be recycled, right? What does it matter? But it does. Right now, there is no secondary market for used glass in Florida. The one place that does take it charges for the service, according to Monroe County District Manager Greg Sullivan of Waste Management.

Sullivan said it’s cheaper to make new glass bottles rather than recycle old glass bottles.

Aluminum cans, however, are a different story.

“Aluminum is one of the most valuable commodities, about $1,100 a ton,” he said.

Recycling is a market. Ten years ago, the market was better — less supply, more demand.

Now, there are more recyclables entering the stream, but also more contamination — a greasy pizza box mixed in with reams of office paper, for example. And the global appetite for recycled materials has shifted considerably.

In 2017, the U.S. was sending 4,000 shipping containers full of recyclables a day to China — more than 50 percent of the world’s recycling market. But in 2018, China created a policy called “China’s National Sword.” It listed 24 types of waste it would no longer accept. Plus, it instituted a very low contamination rate of 0.5 percent, down from the 5 percent to 10 percent it used to accept.

“The global recycling market is challenged right now,” said Dawn McCormick, community affairs manager for Waste Management. “The little material that

China will accept has to meet a standard of 0.5 percent contamination. But the material coming into our recycling centers can have rates as high as 30 percent contamination.”

Waste Management operates four MRFs (Materials Recovery Facility), or recycling centers, in Florida. There are another three or so that are operated by other companies. The waste from the Florida Keys heads to the Reuter Recycling Center in Pembroke Pines.

Sullivan said contamination is a huge problem for curbside recycling.

“Plastic bags are our biggest enemy. If a plastic bag gets into the recycling and enters the system it hurts all the equipment that does the sorting — conveyor belts, shafts, bearings — the plastic bag wraps around the machin-

Thirty percent to 40 percent of Florida’s recyclables are contaminated (a figure backed by the state Department of Environmental Protection).

And only 35 percent of what is sorted has a positive market value, i.e. a secondary recycler will buy the tons of clean paper or empty plastic water bottles. What’s left goes into the landfill or is burned in a waste-to-energy plant.

“The otherside of the coin isn’t all bad,” Sullivan said. “Plastic burns great.”

Waste-to-energy processes generate electricity and/or heat directly through combustion, or produce a type of fuel such as methane, methanol, ethanol or synthetic fuel.

While recyclers in Florida and the Florida Keys are largely unfazed by the changes in the global market, other places in the country are not so fortunate. Various news outlets are reporting that Philadelphia is burning about 50 percent of its recyclables, leading to public health concerns.

The future of recycling isn’t in jeopardy, but the face of recycling is likely to change.

“We have contracts in place, so I don’t see any immediate changes. Our biggest push is to educate people,” Sullivan said. “If you’re not recycling properly, it’s just wasted effort, wasted time, everything is wasted. If three people recycle correctly, and the fourth doesn’t and contaminates the recyclables, everyone’s good efforts are lost.”

McCormick states it more plainly.

“When in doubt, throw it out,” she said.

This applies, she said, to dirty pizza boxes or peanut butter jars.

Sullivan wants the consumer to consider what can and can’t be recycled before buying. He likes plain old bar soap that comes in a thin paper wrapper, rather than a plastic bottle of liquid body soap. Choose aluminum cans over glass bottles. Buy in bulk — a big jug that can refill a counter-top dish soap dispenser.

“Think about what you’re buying and the implications of recycling it,” he said.

The shrinking recyclable market, and the need to recycle correctly, will make it difficult to meet the state mandate passed six years ago — increase

recycling rates to 75 percent by 2020 in Florida. (Fortunately, putting solid waste through waste-to-energy processes will count towards this goal.)

One state legislator has put forth a 2019 bill that would address contamination. In HB 771, Palm City Republican Rep. Toby Overdorf wants local governments to create strategies for minimizing contamination, and create procedures by which the contaminated recycling could be rejected.

HB 771, put forward by Overdorf and the companion SB 816 advanced by Gainesville Republican Senator Keith Perry, are making progress in this legislative season.

“In other words, they aren’t contaminated so it allows for the waste companies to have more material going to recycling rather than the landfills,” Overdorf told the Tampa Bay Times.

The bill has passed several committee readings, including the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Subcommittee and Senate Environment and Natural Resources, with some amendments.

doption of the 2020 Monroe County Strategic Plan passed without objection or any lengthy discussion during the Board of County Commissioners’ March 21 meeting at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center in Key Largo.

Taking effect Oct. 1, 2019, the five-year plan will guide priorities and direction of county services through future annual budgets. The plan, based on priorities from the BOCC and the public, was created using 18 months of research and feedback from the community, collected before and after Hurricane Irma in 2017.

“The 2020 Strategic Plan is a 30,000-foot view of the largest issues, biggest concerns and most daunting challenges facing our Keys community,” said Kimberly Matthews, Monroe County’s senior director of strategic planning. “The next step is to create programs, solutions and actions focused on the priorities and areas of concern that are detailed in this plan.”

Results from a public survey showed affordable housing at the top of the list throughout the Keys, followed by growth control/lack of open space, U.S. 1 traffic and safety and water quality. The initial 2017 survey and Community Input sessions gathered 443 residential and 21 business responses. Hundreds of residents also provided feedback during 13 community input sessions. The 2018 process included: 23 interactive presentations with nearly 850 attendees, 826 (non-duplicated resident) responses to the online survey, meetings with 96 people, more than 41 individual or group stakeholder meetings, and six Facebook polls with more than 1,500 votes cast.

“This detailed plan guides the future of Monroe County and it was an immense project that our Strategic Planner Kimberly Matthews worked very hard for more than a year,” said Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi.

In other news: PAVING CR 905 IN KEY LARGO Monroe County commissioners approved an agreement with the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority for additional paving under FKAA’s CR 905 project in Key Largo, which involves replacement of a line to Ocean Reef. The county wanted additional paving to be added to the project to allow for the full width overlay of the road and bike lane. FKAA is currently under contract for the construction of this project and has provided the cost for the additional paving, which the county will be responsible for reimbursing. The county will reimburse FKAA for $995,324 for the work.

Assistant County Administrator Kevin Wilson said the repaving is from U.S. 1 to the three-way stop heading up to Ocean Reef.

NEW LIBRARY IN MARATHON Commissioners gave approval to award a contract to the highest-ranked respondent, PedroFalcon Construction, to build a new Monroe County Library in Marathon. The contract total cost is $7,016,385. Construction will be paid for through the one-cent infrastructure sales tax. On Feb. 20, the county opened sealed responses to the request for proposals for construction. On March 4, a ranking committee meeting resulted in the award. As part of the Monroe County emissions reduction goal of 40 percent below 2012 by 2030, an alternate item for a solar voltaic panel system

IRMA RECOVERY Helene Wetherington, who heads local disaster recovery for the county, gave commissioners a presentation regarding Irma recovery progress. She noted that a total of 1,178 total applications were submitted to date for Rebuild Florida, a federally-funded, state-run program to help Floridians recover from Hurricane Irma.

The county is preparing to submit an application for five units in Key Largo, 15 at Conch Key, 13 at Howard’s Haven and nine for scattered sites on Big Pine Key. Wetherington said officials are also working to secure funds through Volunteer Florida, which has $8 million specifically set aside for Irma, for affordable housing initiatives.

FIREFIGHTER RECOGNITION The meeting began with a recognition for the professional firefighters of Monroe County. Mayor Sylvia Murphy presented a proclamation to firefighters for selflessly contributing their time and energy fighting for kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases that severely limit muscle strength and mobility by raising money each year for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Last year, the Professional Firefighters of Monroe County raised $21,544 for MDA through the annual Fill the Boot campaign.

T

he April 15 income tax deadline is fast approaching, and there are options for residents who don’t want to pay to get their taxes done. The United Way of the Florida Keys is offering two free tax preparation options for Monroe County residents with limited incomes.

The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program assists qualified taxpayers with completion of their annual tax return, to ensure that families receive every available benefit, and MyFreeTaxes.com offers online, easyto-complete tax returns.

VITA volunteer tax preparers are IRS-certified and prepared to complete simple tax returns, including identifying available credits for those earning less than $55,000 in 2018. There is absolutely no charge to the taxpayer for this service. Residents may make a tax appointment online or by phone. More details are available at KeysUnitedWay. org/vita2019.

In addition to the VITA program, taxpayers earning less than $66,000 have a second free tax preparation option. MyFreeTaxes.com makes it easy to complete taxes for free in less than an hour. Dark History Honoring Manuel Cabeza

On March, 23, residents and officials of our island gathered for an unusual purpose — even for Key West. Mourners met at Key West Cemetery to hold a funeral for a man who died nearly a hundred years ago: Private Manuel Cabeza. Cabeza was a Key West native and World War I veteran who was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan on Christmas Day in 1921 because of his involvement with a woman with dark skin, known to us only as “Angela.”

Cabeza was never provided a proper gravestone or service, but now a new gravestone has been placed. Mayor Teri Johnston opened the ceremony and Commissioner Clayton Lopez delivered the eulogy, an excerpt of which follows. It can serve as a history lesson, a homage, a hundred-years late obituary, and a meditation on the most admirable and most evil features of our shared history and character.

REMEMBER MANUEL CABEZA. When you remember Manuel Cabeza, don’t think about the way Manuel Cabeza died. Think about the way Manuel Cabeza lived.

Manuel Cabeza was born in Key West on June 17, 1887. He was the fourth child of Tomas Cabeza and Clara Peraza Cabeza and became brother to Willie, Clara, Dominica, Frank and Mary.

Both of Manuel’s parents were born 4,000 miles away in the Canary Islands of Spain, but it was right here in Key West that Manuel was born and raised, a true Conch, with true Conch blood flowing through his veins.

Manuel grew up on Louisa Street in a Key West that was much different than the island we know today. It was a time when the cigar industry was overtaking salt production and fishing as the major economic source. Key West was a true island at the time, and it would be 25 years before the Overseas Railway was constructed connecting us to the mainland.

There is much about Manuel Cabeza we do not know, but there are stories about him that have been passed down through our island tradition. Through these stories, we can see that Manuel Cabeza was a kind man, a brave man, a man who stood up for what he believed in, a man with a big sense of humor and a man with an even bigger heart.

Cabeza once described to a newspaper how he came to be called Manuel Head. It all started when he was brought into the police station on minor charges and he recalled the famous “Chicken & Rice” case where a Cuban gambler told the arresting officer his name was Arroz Con Pollo. The name stuck in the dockets and the town had a good laugh. Cabeza paid tribute to the “Chicken & Rice” case by reporting his last name as “Head.” It went in the docket, and from there, it stuck.

Manuel Head was 30 years old in 1917.

He was working as a cook at The Roger Harris Restaurant and living on the corner of Virginia and Thomas Streets when he was ordered to report to the local board for military duty.

The United States joined World War I several months prior.

Manuel Cabeza trained at Camp Jackson, S.C. He was assigned the numerical designation 1873913 and departed for France from the docks of Hoboken, N.J. on the transport continued on page 36

ower Keys Medical Center honors its medical staff and providers each year on or around Doctors’ Day, March 30. In 2017, hospital CEO David Clay wanted to create a more meaningful way of paying tribute to the medical staff.

Instead of offering a token of appreciation in the form of some novelty gift, he started a new tradition of making a contribution to several charitable organizations on behalf of, and in honor of, the physicians and providers who care for patients at Lower Keys Medical Center and in our community.

The medical staff votes for the charities of their choice and donations are presented by the Medical Executive Committee members at the hospital’s Doctors’ Day celebration. “Our ‘gift’ to our physicians is to give back to the community where we all live, by supporting the work of our extraordinary not-forprofit organizations,” said Clay. Wesley House Family Services, Samuel’s House, MARC House and Florida Keys Children’s Shelter will receive donations during the Doctors’ Day celebration on Friday, March 29.

aving lived a block or two from the water since I moved to Key West, I’ve had a recurring Dr. Stanley Sack dream where a grouper leaps from the water and onto my kitchen counter, ready for dressing and cooking. Call it my Fantasy Feast, if you will. My enthusiasm for this unlikely event has dimmed a little, however: it would be a feast for one, since my spouse appears to be allergic to essentially all seafood.

Whether the banquet is real or imagined, food allergies, in fact, are no fun. And they can be particularly challenging when you’re a parent and they affect your child. Certainly severe food allergies — the ones where someone lands in the emergency room with life-threatening symptoms — can be a real worry.

Even without the threat of something that dire, though, what a child eats can cause symptoms that range from mild wheezing to runny nose to skin rashes. (By “skin rashes” here we’re usually talking about eczema — dry, scaly skin that’s uncomfortable but not life-threatening. Hives or welts, on the other hand, can mean a more severe problem.)

Because food allergies are real, doctors, particularly those who see kids, have always been interested in a dietary fix that would keep symptoms away, preferably for good.

What that historically meant was that we’d make a special effort to delay giving infants foods that were most likely to cause problems. For example, one recommendation has been to delay seafood to as late as 3 years of age! That’s a long time for that catch to stay in the freezer.

Lately, however, there have been developments in infant research that may make providers eat their words. The findings were compelling enough to be mentioned in an updated report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

The report, which came out just last week, compared breastfed infants who consumed common allergy-producing foods between 3 and 5 months of age. In one study, researchers found that giving peanut butter and cooked egg at this age helped protect against symptoms later. In a second study, giving an “infant-friendly” form of peanut to 4to 11-month-olds protected against more severe allergic symptoms later.

Based on these studies, the AAP has changed its recommendation.

Peanut products may be introduced as early as 4 to 6 months of age in babies who have shown certain allergic symptoms such as eczema.

(The egg results were a little more mixed, so they’ve held off on any recommendations there.) There’s a big “BUT” here, however: always talk with your baby’s provider first! He or she may want to test your little one for severe allergy, which would nix peanut time. It might also be important to introduce that first feed in the doctor’s office. Likewise, keep in mind that there are other hazards with nuts and even peanut butter, such as choking; seek advice on an infant-friendly peanut forms. Finally, there are often other reasons to delay solid food — the baby may not yet be swallowing well, for example — so talk about solids before giving them.

And that fish thing? What should you do for your youngest diners if that grouper does indeed land on your counter? There don’t yet seem to be definitive fish studies, but the AAP has reaffirmed its recommendation that infants without allergies have the go-ahead for just about anything after about 6 months of age. So once that food is okayed on other grounds—bon appetit! And I’ll leave my back door open should any grouper family members decide to follow suit …

Leading the client, Sister Mary, a volunteer and nun, helps him choose food from crates of fresh fruits and vegetables before moving to refrigerators full of meat and dairy, ending with grains and canned goods. With a heavy bag, he hugs her and walks out the door.

“I am blessed to show people the face of Jesus and serve them with a smile and love,” she said after he left.

“We help about 3,000 to 5,000 people monthly. Farm Share in Homestead provides fresh produce twice weekly, and a truck from Miami comes once a week with dry goods,” said Raquel Rojas, managing director for SOS. “Clients must prove their residency with a lease, water or utility bill.

If clients have children, we need their birth certificates. (Clients) can come once a week,” she stated.

“Usually Monday mornings, we are crushed until about 11 a.m.; it picks up again around noon,” said volunteer Gordon Johnston. “What Tom [Callahan] has done by creating this is amazing. To get food in surplus and coordination between different programs, I am in awe,” he added.

The SOS Foundation covers the Lower Keys and a food pantry in Key Largo, while the Keys Area Interdenominational Resources (KAIR) serves Islamorada to Big Pine Key, centrally located at Marathon United Methodist Church, MM 48.5.

“KAIR has been in operation for 21 years, beginning as a collaboration between churches in Marathon. I’ve been part of it for 15 [years]. We serve about 40 people daily,” said Marjorie Roberts, director.

“At a time when most people in our country are cutting calories, we believe food is a right, not a luxury. We do not ask for identification when receiving food,” she said. “We do require identification for other services.”

In a stuffy hallway, bread sat in a box on an old church pew, while John, a client with KAIR, waited beside it.

“I need an inhaler and can’t afford it. KAIR arranged to pay for it at the drugstore across the street. I come here to get lunch every day and it helps me so much,” he said. “I don’t know what I would do without them.”

“Because KAIR is not affiliated with any national foundations or organizations, we can be more flexible with our types of assistance,” Roberts stated. “We can help people with food, transportation and much more because we are independent.”

The largest fundraiser for KAIR is the Sombrero Beach Run, which was held March 2.

“I haven’t tallied it yet, but it usually brings in $40,000 to $50,000. Last year we gave out over $1 million in assistance,” she said.

The SOS Foundation and KAIR need men’s professional clothing right now, and monetary donations are always appreciated.

ake-A-Wish Southern Florida and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary granted Tristan Cureton’s wish to be marine biologist on March 27.

The 7-year-old, who struggles with the effects of cystic fibrosis, has traveled to Key West from Carlsbad, N.M. to live out his dream to be a marine biologist. He’ll get that opportunity at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center during a VIP, behind-the-scenes experience that includes feeding fish at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium exhibit, tours of labs and museum exhibits, and the screening of a film about life in the ocean.

The highlight of the day will be when Tristan — in full makeup, body paint, and an original design costume — leads a plankton tow to examine undersea life. As the local marine biologists do, Tristan will examine his sample under a microscope and draw some conclusions about what he sees. (Tristan’s sea creature costume features a squid-like head, eight octopus-inspired tentacles, and a scaly texture).

Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted nearly 12,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a wish for every medically-eligible child in its territory.

Wish kids most often “wish to be” (something), “wish to meet” (someone), “wish to go” (somewhere), “wish to have” (something) or “wish to give” (to a cause), and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost or obligation.

Replaces Building Destroyed in Hurricane Irma

Waste Management of the Florida Keys celebrated the opening of its new $5.5 million maintenance facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 22.

The 7,500-square-foot facility replaces the company’s former maintenance building that was destroyed in Hurricane Irma.

“We are extremely pleased to open this new facility to service our fleet of 40 trucks that provide waste and recycling collection services to our valued customers in Monroe County and the City of Key West,” said Greg Sullivan, senior district manager for Waste Management of the Florida Keys. “This represents a multimillion-dollar investment in the Keys and we look forward to providing exceptional service here for many years to come.”

The ribbon-cutting and luncheon event was attended by elected officials and staff from Monroe County and the City of Key West, along with business leaders and community partners.

“Waste Management and its 70 local employees are a major part of our community, as they not only keep our community clean, but they also support many local organizations including Military Affairs, Habitat for Humanity, the Boys and Girls Club, the Rotary Club and many others,” said Virginia Panico, executive director of the Key West Chamber of Commerce. “This community has a real partnership with Waste Management, and we congratulate Greg Sullivan and his team on this new facility.” ­— Contributed

THE SWIM OF HER SOUL Diana Nyad performs at The Studios

R

ecord-breaking swimmer Diana Nyad is as big a name in the Keys as anywhere, and she is as bold and memorable in real life too. For one night only, Wednesday, April 3, at the Studios of Key West, Nyad will present “The Courage to Fail,” an evening of personal stories about her many ups and downs throughout her life — not just her swims.

Nyad put herself and Key West on the worldwide stage back in September 2013, when at 64, she completed her lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Key West in 53 hours without a shark cage.

“Cuba was always the swim of my soul. They call it the Mt. Everest of the Earth’s oceans in terms of difficulty. That’s why nobody had ever done it before.

I tried five times over a 35-year span. It’s an epic area.” Many locals will remember the exhausted Nyad emerging on Smathers Beach that sunny day.

It was just one of her many historic accomplishments, like swimming around Manhattan in under eight hours and traversing 102 miles between the Bahamas and Florida. Aside from being an athlete, Nyad is also a broadcast journalist, author (her latest memoir is “Find a Way”) and motivational speaker, which she combines in a delightfully entertaining way for the performance.

“It’s a series of scenes that take you on a journey, my journey, and the audience is right there in it,” said Nyad. She will be performing with Bonnie Stoll, who managed Nyad’s Cuba swim support team and will be narrating the performance as well as playing her part. The Cuba swim is the primary narrative of the performance.

Nyad portrays characters like her thick-accented parents. She recalls the time when she stood on the beach at age 9 with her mother and looked toward Cuba.

“I am my mother, I am my father, during the show,” said Nyad.

Nyad brings to life intimate and difficult topics. She includes her conversations with the late actor Christopher Reeve, when they talked about regrets and chasing dreams before it’s too late. Nyad also animates the coach she has publicly written about who sexually abused her at age 14.

“The show is about those who served to bring about the precepts of what I have come to believe in life,” said Nyad. “It’s my life story.”

Nyad doesn’t swim much any more, except for charity events. Instead, she has taken on another passion and is bringing it to Key West. Nyad and Stoll founded “EverWalk,” an initiative to get people walking and moving with the goal to include one million members. Nyad is inviting anyone to join her at the Southernmost Buoy from April 1-5 at 9 am to go for a 10-mile walk around the island with her.

In the afternoon, Nyad, along with 40 others who have come to Key West for the week, will be working on houses for Habitat for Humanity.

“The whole town never ceases to amaze me how much help they give me,” said Nyad of Key West, and she is happy to return the favor.

The Naval Air Base’s “Southernmost Spectacular” is set for this weekend, March 30-31. It will be held on the Boca Chica Air Field at MM 8. (Regular ticket holders southbound enter at this gate.) KEY LIMES RESPONSIBLE FOR REAL ESTATE PRICES IN FLORIDA KEYS

W

e all know the “Key” in “Key lime pie” comes from the Florida Keys, but why is a lime native to Southeast Asia named after an island chain in Florida? And how is the price of a house in the DAVID Florida Keys tied to a singuSLOAN lar citrus? The first known use of the term “Key lime” appeared on Dec. 28, 1905, in a Country Gentleman article by John Gifford of Dade County. In it he wrote, “Now on these Keys the lime grows almost wild. It is free from scale, probably because of the salt atmosphere. It will grow and fruit right in the woods. No fertilizer is needed.

They yield enormously without it. The key lime is the finest on the market. It is aromatic, juicy and highly superior to the lemon.”

Local farmers harvested and shipped the limes for the next several decades. They were a prized garnish for the Gin Rickey and similar drinks, and the number of commercial groves in the Keys continued to increase once Flagler’s railroad arrived. Limes needed a warm climate to thrive, so most of the limes produced in Florida came from the Keys. Citrus aurantifolia was the only variety thriving on the islands, so locals simply called them “limes.” Old Conch recipe cards for our favorite pie just called it “lime pie.” A 1926 menu published in the Key West Citizen did the same. It wasn’t until Aug. 9, 1939, that locals put the “Key” in Key lime pie as part of a calculated marketing effort, introduced by popular local druggist John Gardiner, to revive the Keys economy.

By 1939, the lime industry in the Florida Keys was facing competition on two fronts. On the first, the hybrid Persian lime — created by breeding a Key lime with a lemon — was thriving in parts of Florida where traditional limes did not do well. On the second, Mexican limes — identical to those grown in the Keys — were being imported at lower prices with little import

duty. As the price of Key limes dropped from $8 per crate to $1 per crate, it became clear that lime competition was hurting local bank accounts.

A front-page headline in the Aug. 19, 1939, edition of The Key West Citizen encouraged the community to “Adopt Slogan To Advertise Limes Grown Along Keys.” The article credits Gardiner and introduces a “concentrated effort to attract wider distribution to limes grown on the Florida Keys ... started with the introduction last week of the special souvenir crate of Key West Limes for the tourist trade. The crates are sold to tourists for twenty-five cents each, limes and all, and they may be mailed to northern friends for approximately ten cents.” The article goes on to call on housewives of Monroe County for recipes employing key limes for favorite drinks, salad combinations, desserts, and the “famous lime pie” with a promise that the best recipes will be printed in “an attractive folder to be inserted in each souvenir crate. Thus — the outside world will become more easily familiar with the high and desirable qualities of key limes.”

An article published the same month praises the souvenir lime package saying, “It is probable that the limes will find a ready market. It will expand a small industry. It will bring prosperity to our frost-free lime areas along the keys and in Key West. This will increase the demand for property in Monroe County. And that means prosperity for many of our citizens.”

A sweet plan, indeed — use Key limes to target people looking for a piece of the pie. Reading through the local real estate ads this week, I’d say the plan worked. Perhaps a little too well!

his inconspicuous Meadows gem was a property where — like many in Key West — one would never knows what’s just behind the fence.

Forty years ago, the new owners had their honeymoon in Key West and decided to invest in a property on the island. They were under contract on another property — and a tree fell on the house during Hurricane Irma. Then, at long last, they found this gem with the help of Geno Zaharakis of Coldwell Banker and ultimately purchased the property. Zaharakis, under his new design firm Beekman Design, assembled a local team for the project, whom he calls a “fabulous support group.” They wanted to stay true to the existing home, but do a Keys-style mid-century modern renovation to remember.

“We focused on repurposing the existing living spaces and creating an open concept home, optimizing the wall of windows, to make a seamless indoor-outdoor transition,” said Zaharakis.

The “before” and “after” photos showcase the dramatic change in atmosphere without huge structural modification. Said Zaharakis, “My motto is: we’ll find you a house and make it a home.”

He walked us through the before and after of each area.

1. Outside “The front of the house was important for curb appeal. Cleaning up the hedges — there’s a blue porterweed where butterflies live — and introducing new landscaping was key. Being in a HARC neighborhood, there are certain colors we can pull from — if there is a house in old town that is hot pink, you can paint your house hot pink — but here we went with terra cotta for the door, slate grey for shutters, and then a Caribbean sea blue for the house. Perry’s Painting did it.” LARRY BLACKBURN/Keys Weekly 2. Bedroom “We wanted to create a bedroom that was serene and clean and honored the architecture of the roof and ceiling. These Italian ceiling fans are modeled after old propellers from planes, and linewise go with the ceiling.”

3. Bathroom “I loved the update of this bathroom. Paul Rowe did the tiling, which is all from Island City Tile on White Street. The paintings above the sink are James Coleman originals, the ‘Icons of Key West’ bar series. We wanted to showcase local work.”

4. Deck and Pool House “Again, a wall of French doors on the pool house, which is two bedrooms, two baths, makes everything flow seamlessly. Off the pool house, we set up a private guest patio.”

5. Living Room “French doors open out onto the pool space. We took off the doors, scrubbed and painted them — that does a lot. When you’re inside and the doors are open, you really feel like you’re part of the gardens. We used local artists’ work from Key West Pottery and Judith Zabar’s paintings in the living room. The chairs are mid-century modern by way of the rooster.”

6. Kitchen “The kitchen was old, but it had beautiful cabinetry. We did a gas Mile cooktop and oven and SubZero refrigerator to update. We also did acetone on the cabinets, sanded them and painted them cobalt blue with brushed brass pulls. The previous owners did the elevated dishwasher, and I love it.”

THE FARCE OF LOVE AND WAR

A

ll is fair in love and war. Comedian and playwright Steve Martin proves the point with his absurd and hilarious play, “Meteor Shower," now playing at The Red Barn Theatre. It’s a satire, a comedy and a blatant jab at California narcissism. To paraphrase Shakespeare: there is truth in jest. The plot is simple: two couples get together to watch a meteor shower in Ojai, California, but the catch? Only one will emerge the victor.

Director Joy Hawkins doesn’t shy HAYS BLINCKMANN away from a big project on the small hays@keysweekly.com stage. Martin’s sense of humor and writing require great attention to detail, intertwining one-liners, subtle sarcasm, sexual innuendo, and Martin-esque physical comedy. It’s masterful like a rollercoaster, and once the play picks up speed, the twists and turns and unexpectedness are a crazy ride.

Meet Corky and Norm, the self-actualized, liberal elite couple who wear their insecurities like Christmas ugly sweaters — cluelessly. They are humorless, repressed and achingly hard to stand as they demonstrate the starry neediness of West Coasters. Elena Devers delivers Corky, the nuanced housewife, with sheer buoyancy, keeping the play afloat in a stratosphere beyond our delightful comprehension. She serves up “pre-wine” before the guests arrive, claiming it doesn’t count, and has dabbled in “cannibalism,” setting the play’s absurdity level pretty high.

Norm, (a play on the word normal) is a perfect fit for Dave Bootle, whose face alone delivers his subtly and oddly lovable character. He does a lot of “acknowledging and appreciating” of his wife and is about as exciting as milquetoast until … (wait, no spoilers!).

After that, he is anything but normal.

In come Gerald and Laura, the manipulative guests from hell, bent on breaking the quaint suburban bubble. They are smoothtalking, aggressive con artists going in for “total collapse” of Corky and Norm’s marriage. Michael Castellano takes on Gerald with all the smarminess of an eel let loose on land, and Susannah Wells oozes Laura’s sexuality with hip thrusting delight, while delivering jabs like a boxer, “Exactly what we need, a little nothing in the country,” she offers when talking about Corky and Norm’s home.

However, the play doesn’t end with the couples set in their roles. Martin flips the timeline and scenes are replayed over with a “what if” mentality. And ultimately the complacent Corky and Norm become an unexpected match for Gerald and Laura. While the play may delve into the subconscious of marriage, it doesn’t go too deep and remains a farce from beginning to end. Like the 50 to 60 meteors during the show, that’s about how many jokes are delivered in the 80 minutes. It’s fast, a little messy and ultimately funny.

BOOGIE WOOGIE American Bombshells drop on the Keys

There’s an unmistakable energy in the Andrews Sisters’ rendition of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” the World War II tune that makes feet tap and hearts swell with patriotic pride. For those of us who weren’t around to hear the iconic trio in their heyday, there is a new generation keeping that spirit alive: The American Bombshells.

Founded in 2011 by USO member and Marine Corps wife Ali Reeder, the group is 17 women strong, and they travel as trios to military bases, veteran’s hospitals and events across the nation to spread great music and support for our armed forces.

The American Bombshells will be performing in Key West this weekend as part of the Naval Air Station’s Southernmost Spectacular. The best part?

They’re anchored by a hometown girl, Stephanie Leone, who sings soprano.

Stephanie is a Conch, and her family has deep Keys roots, working with Island Lobster Company and Historic Tours for many years.

“I don’t know where I came from, being an artist,” Leone laughs.

After graduating from Key West High School, Leone moved to New York, where she auditioned for the American Bombshells. “The first audi-

tion is: can you sing?" she said. "Then, it’s: can you dance? And finally, can you interview with a retired military officer.”

Leone checked all the boxes and was invited to join. She’s traveled the country — and the world — as part of the group, singing, dancing and bringing joy to servicemen and women.

They’ve appeared on national and international media as well, including “The Today Show.”

“Having been to military bases and hospitals and veterans’ homes, it’s changed my view on the military and the world. It’s made me feel really grateful for the life we have.” Leone also helps with auditions for the American Bombshells, seeking out women with the right sparkle. “It’s easy to find someone who wants to be on TV. That’s like 2 percent of what we do. You’ve got to give the same show if you’re singing for 50 people in a hospital, and you’ve got to make them smile.”

Inspired by yesteryear’s Andrews sisters and other USO performers, the Bombshells take making people smile very seriously. They also operate as a non-profit, doing about half commercial bookings to pay for the other half of non-profit bookings. Of their two shows in Key West, one is free to the

Beach Boys Visit Key West

he iconic American rock group the Beach Boys will visit Key West on Thursday, April 4, at Sunset Green.

The Beach Boys — members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — play a busy schedule of concerts, averaging 150 shows a year, ranging from summer festivals to New Year’s celebrations and special events across the globe. VIP packages are available at TheBeachBoys.com & MikeLove.com.

The band is led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston — along with Jeffrey Foskett, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Keith Hubacher, Christian Love and Scott Totten.

Love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as a songwriter. “Surfin’,” The Beach Boys’ first hit, came from his pen.

Love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls” and the Grammy nominated “Good Vibrations.” Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by co-writing “Kokomo.” Additionally, Love released his highly-anticipated New York Times best-selling memoir, “Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy,” in September 2016.

Johnston, a Grammy-winning songwriter, joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glen Campbell, who had filled in for Brian Wilson when he retired from touring. Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton Ramshead presents John and Pink Floyd established him The Beach Boys among rock’s elite artists.

The band could have retired years ago, confident in its contribution to world culture. It could have rested on the success of the “Pet Sounds” masterpiece in 1966, or after Love’s concept album “Endless Summer” ignited a second generation of Beach Boys fans, or after recording the Golden Globe-nominated “Kokomo” in 1988 and seeing it become its best-selling single ever, or after being inducted that year into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Now, the band’s worldwide album sales total more than $100 million and, in 2001, the Beach Boys won a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 (along with The Who, Bob Marley, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. and Les Paul) from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences – now simply the Recording Academy, home of the Grammys.

On The Beach Boys’ horizon is a continued national/world tour and charity activities through Mike Love’s Love Foundation, which supports national environmental and educational initiatives. Love and The Beach Boys’ recent efforts raised more than $250,000 for the Red Cross to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina and made additional contributions to disaster relief in Haiti.

t was May 14, 1995 when the Beach Boys’ manager walked into my office. I was GM on Premier Cruise Line’s Star/ Ship Atlantic and we were hosting the first ever Beach Boys Cruise. They would sail to Nassau with us, perform on the pier, and sail back on our sister ship.

“I’m Paul Stanley, manager for the Beach Boys,” he said handing me a card.

“Damn! You look so different without the makeup.” was my reply. We both knew he wasn’t Paul Stanley from KISS, but I said it anyway. He gave me a funny look then started laughing. I apologized, acknowledging he probably hears that all the time.

“Believe it or not, you’re the first person with the balls to say it to me.”

He sat down and leaned in. “You’re going to say ‘no’, but you have to do this. I want you to sing with the Beach Boys.”

“No way.”

“Way. Head to the side of the stage when they play ‘Kokomo’ and give security my card. You’ll be singing Barbara Ann.” There was no internet to Google the lyrics so I started drinking instead. They played “Little Deuce Coup,” and I drank. They played “In My Room,” and I drank some more. I averaged a drink every other song, and by the time “Kokomo” rolled they were 25 songs deep into the set list and I was picking up really good vibrations from way too much dark spiced rum.

I stumbled to the side of the stage. Security gave brief instructions, a song ended, and they pushed me out into the spotlight.

“Go!” I felt like a rock star. The band started playing. I approached the microphone. The crowd went wild. I assumed my microphone and the keyboard in front of me were turned off, so I sang even louder and played a random solo on the synth. Dancers shimmied around me and Mike Love came over to share the microphone. It was pure Beach Boy bliss.

When I stumbled offstage, my girlfriend was waiting.

“You sounded like shit.”

“What are you talking about? The microphone was turned off.”

“No. It was on. You sounded like shit and everyone heard it.”

I went back to my cabin and passed out. That night we had a stowaway on board. The captain called me to organize the crew for a search. I hung up on him and went back to sleep. I should have lost my job, but I didn’t. If I had, I’d have just hit up my new friend Paul Stanley. I’m sure he would have given me a gig playing with KISS. That’s what it’s like to sing with The Beach Boys.

Honoring Manuel Cabeza

Trombone Concert April 1 at the Little Room Jazz Club

T

he Isle of Bones 'Bones is back for its 12th annual trombone concert. Highlighting three tenor trombones, the group will perform at the Little Room Jazz Club on Monday, April 1, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. With Joe Dallas Jr., his father Joe Dallas Sr., and Harry Schroeder on tenor trombones, the bass trombone slot will be filled by Georges Hemund on baritone sax. The rhythm section is Mike Emerson, guitar; Gary Rivenson, bass; and Skipper Kripitz, drums.

Most of the musicians are regular players with the Paradise Big Band, which sponsors the concert. Joe Sr. is a regular visitor as trombone soloist.

Trombone quartets go back many years, to Beethoven and beyond. They became popular in the '50s and '60s, when the great jazz trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding put several such groups together.

For this concert, all the charts were written by Schroeder; most of them have never been heard before.

“There’s a great advantage to writing for people you know, whose playing you’re familiar with,” he says. “That way you can write to their strengths.” The selections include up-tempo swing, Latin rock, blues, an original and some standards. A feature of the concert will be a tribute to Hurricane Irma.

Since its inception more than a dozen years ago, this Isle of Bones 'Bones concert has become a local favorite for jazz fans.

The 105th built bridges and rails, often while under attack, so the offensive could move forward. A story passed down in Key West tells of a German offensive that had U.S. troops backed up against a fierce river. Crossing the river was the Allies’ only hope of survival, but somebody had to secure a rope on the other side.

The commanding officer asked for volunteers, and Manuel Cabeza rose to the challenge. He and the other volunteers powered across the river and secured the rope, allowing the retreating soldiers to escape with their lives as the Germans approached.

This is but one story of his bravery. The heroic actions of Manuel Cabeza and the 105th Engineers were extolled in a letter of commendation from Commander John J. Pershing to Col. Joseph Hyde Pratt, Chief of Engineers. Private Manuel Head left St. Nazaire, France on April 1, 1919 aboard the U.S.S. Martha Washington and was honorably discharged that same year. The parting words from Commander Pershing are as true today as they were when Cabeza returned to civilian life:

With a consecrated devotion to duty and a will to conquer, you have loyally served your country. … In leaving the scenes of your victories, may I ask that you carry home your high ideals and continue to live as you have served — an honor to the principles for which you have fought and to the fallen comrades you leave behind.

Manuel returned to Key West and operated a coffee house that, by most accounts, offered more than coffee. We may never know all of the details of what happened next, but what we do know is that Manuel was a man with light skin who was involved with a woman who had skin darker than his. A local hate group beat him nearly to death and warned him to end the relationship. Manuel Cabeza refused.

Early on Christmas morning in 1921, members of the Ku Klux Klan beat Manuel Cabeza with blackjacks at the jail in Jackson Square. They tied a rope around his neck and dragged him behind a vehicle to the end of Flagler Avenue where he was hanged, then shot, then shot again and again and again.

People who came to see him were told, “Remember Manuel Cabeza," but it was spoken as a warning not to do as he had done. Cabeza was never afforded a proper funeral or headstone. Now we are able to honor the brave soldier ad fellow islander with both.

And so I ask you again: Remember Manuel Cabeza.

Every day, wherever you go, and with whatever you do, remember him. But don’t remember how Manuel Cabeza died; remember how Manuel Cabeza lived.

Manuel Cabeza lived with conviction.

Manuel Cabeza lived with compassion.

Manuel Cabeza lived with confidence.

Manuel Cabeza lived with passion.

Manuel Cabeza lived with humor.

And most importantly, Manuel Cabeza lived ... with love.

PUBLIC COMMENT ENDS MARCH 31 According to the Army Corps of Engineers, almost 2,000 members of the public have attended these “scoping meetings” to offer comment on the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM) currently in process. The corps has extended the public comment period which will close on Sunday, March 31.

ot many residents understand that the Army Corps of Engineers controls the water level in Lake Okeechobee — when to conserve it, when to let it go, and in which direction. Lt. Colonel Jennifer Reynolds, dressed in fatigues, told the audience in Marathon on March 20 the Corps’ first duty was to dispel rumors.

“There is this perception that the Corps is driving the lake level down to 10.5 feet. We have not been told to drive the lake toward any particular level,” she said. “We are looking at everything we can do to mitigate algae blooms in any part of the system.”

The meeting was the beginning of a four-year process to rewrite the manual for the lake’s operation, otherwise known as the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM).

The last plan was done in 2008. It includes a schedule of public comments, like this meeting, workshops, drafts, and more before the plan is finalized in 2022. Plus, it must incorporate elements of the rehabilitation project for the Herbert Hoover Dike that are not even under construction yet.

The corps added the public comment session to the schedule at the request of U.S. Rep. Debbie MucarselPowell. She was late to the meeting in Marathon, read a prepared statement and left immediately after.

Tim Gysan, with the corps, explained the LOSOM update is required by the 2018 Water Resources Development Act. “And as we complete the C-43 and C-44 we need to understand what will be happening in the next four years,” said Gysan, an engineer with the corps.

The C-43 and C-44 reservoirs are located on either side of Lake Okeechobee and would serve to filter the waters of the reoccurring blue-green algae bloom before they enter the Caloosahatchee River to the west of Lake Okeechobee, and the St. Lucie River to the east. To the members of the audience in Marathon, however, the focus was on the importance of filtering water south, to drain into Florida Bay. “We need more fresh water discharge into Florida Bay during rainy season, and a lot more in dry season,” said Ross Boucek, a scientist with Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. “Florida Bay is vulnerable during droughts like the one of 2015. The salinities then were so high, they reached salinities that would be recorded in the Great Salt Lake. The seagrass died, rotted and fueled algae blooms.”

Boucek went on to say the trust regularly invests in research.

During 2015, the organization was in the middle of sponge research and the species died. “We can’t invest in restoration until these water issues are resolved.”

Other audience members stressed cleaning up the lake waters first, before worrying about releasing the water south to feed Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. Alina Davis, an Upper Keys resident and Realtor, said, “We need to come together to help the lake recover its health. If the water coming downstream is clean, if we can get it downstream, that would help Florida Bay. Until then, we have nothing.”

Not only are the Keys the last literal (geographical) stop for the water draining from Lake Okeechobee, its needs are also far down on the priority scale. One of the corps’ handouts emphasizes

the priorities of “public health and safety and flood control first. Other authorized project purposes evaluated include water supply, runoff, weather, ecological conditions of the lake its surrounding area, navigation, salinity and groundwater control.”

The last purpose to be listed is “recreation.”

Capt. Fred Ferreira read aloud a letter from a former client canceling a group charter. He said the cost to the guides alone would total about $38,000, more if the lost bookings and reservations for air, hotel and restaurants were counted. Others encouraged the corps to examine safe lake levels that would preserve

quality drinking water by preventing saltwater intrusion into aquifers.

Steve Thomas, an Upper Keys charter captain, questioned the timeline of LOSOM. “I’m looking at where (the health of Florida Bay) was four years ago, to where we are now … In another four years I’m afraid we’re going to be in big trouble,” he said.

The Herbert Hoover Dike rehabilitation and Everglades Restoration Plans are huge endeavors. In January, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a $625 million plan for Everglades restoration and water resource protection.

In February, DeSantis, and U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott,

requested President Donald Trump commit $200 million to Everglades Restoration plan. Instead, the federal government committed $68 million. According to the South Florida Water Management District, the state of Florida has outspent the federal government by almost double. From 2000 to 2018, the state and SWFMD have spent $2.34 billion, while the feds have contributed $1.3 billion on the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

he Cultural Preservation Society, which runs the Sunset Celebration, is seeking new participants for its world-famous nightly party, after losing one-third of its vendors post-Hurricane Irma. Guest participants are being offered seven nights to display with vendor setup fees being waived. Julie Kuhnke has signed on as one of the first guest artists and is showing her shell art. This outreach to the Keys community is to recruit talent that hasn’t sold wares at the Mallory dock before.

Ryan Stimers, long-time wire sculptor and board member for Sunset Celebration, had the idea to recruit high school art students as well. The students are being offered an artist mentor to help them with setup as well as sales techniques. Stimers has even offered a setup kit, which students can borrow, to get started. These young artists can show their projects for the summer to see how they like being vendors in this venue. They can earn money at the same time. “Working with the public is a great learning experience for the young folks,” Stimers said.

“We could even hold a workshop for the young artists to critique and help them polish their presentation,” Godoy said. Stimers added: “Learning to be a successful craftsman is a wonderful way to work for yourself, right here in Key West.” Not every high school grad is going off to college to become a professional, and now craftsmen are celebrated and are in need, he added.

The artists who work Mallory regularly are excited about the prospect of having students on the dock.

“They can chat with customers about their projects, and how they make them,” said Godoy, adding that it must be lots more fun to sell your art at Sunset Celebration, than to stock shelves, or sell hamburgers.

Art teachers Deborah Buterbaugh and Shannon Perkins, as well as KWHS principal Amber Acevedo, agreed their students would appreciate the opportunity to sell their art, guided by a mentor/sponsor from Mallory.

ropes to give them a hand getting started would be a great help,” said Buterbaugh.

When Stimers met with Buterbaugh and Perkins, he also was able to pitch the Guest Artists at Mallory Dock program to the students. The diverse media the students work in include oil pastels, painting ceramics and drawing. Buterbaugh’s expertise lies in making masks, a perennial favorite art form in Key West.

“It would be great to have some ready right before Fantasy Fest this October,” said Stimers. Popular sellers like masks or Christmas ornaments at holiday time could give the student artists a sales boost.

n March 22 at the Key West Golf Club, the Florida Keys SPCA hosted its 12th annual Spring Social, presented by Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon. It was a beautiful sunny early evening for the animal lovers’ event of the season. VIPs enjoyed a champagne reception, followed by appetizers and a silent auction. Food was provided by Outback Steakhouse with additional eats from Ocean Grill.

As the night went on, there was music by Captain Josh Ramsteck and Bassman Bill, as well as raffles, conversation and plenty of fun.

Rude Girl Emceed, Dr. Chris Bensen was auctioneer, and the full bar was provided by La Te Da. Dare we say it was purrfect?

WATCH | A Star is Born

"A Star is Born" was overshadowed by films like "Roma" and "Green Book" (both great movies) for Best Picture at the 2019 Oscars. But "A Star is Born" (nominated for eight Academy Awards) will stand the test of time as the greatest movie of 2018. The plot is gritty and the movie is downright dark at times. But the symbolic twists make this a rare case where the remake is far superior to its predecessors. As one musician’s star fades, so does his hearing.

For years, “Florida man” has been internet gold, as the recurring anti-hero of absurdist news stories that all happen to be 1) true and 2) take place in Florida. Last week, “Florida man” again took the internet by storm, in what Time called “a bizarre news bonanza.” It began when a Twitter user that goes by “swervin merv” suggested: “EVERYBODY google ‘Florida man’ followed by your birthday (florida man august 22) and tell what you get. Mine is Florida man tries to attack neighbor with tractor.” The masses went wild, posting stranger-than-fiction Floridian news stories. There’s an antidote for reality shows of people behaving badly. It’s “The Kindness Diaries.”

At some point in every episode, one must do battle with one’s own cynicism (are people kinder if there’s a film crew shooting?), but there are also moments that catch the viewer unawares. Like the American homeless man who insisted host Leon Logothetis take several pairs of new, clean underwear or the Africans living in Europe who loaned him nightwear and insisted he take the only bed. Logothetis documents his interactions, and also hands out gifts — like rent money and education tuition for that American so he could become a chef.

RETURN OF THE MAC Mac 'n' Cheese Best Bites SARAH THOMAS

lmost as ubiquitous as fish sandwiches and conch fritters on Key West menus: macaroni and cheese. The humble mac of our youth (Remember the blue box?) has been elevated, often studded by seafood: shrimp, lobster, bacon (the lobster of the land). We all know that a dive into the gooey, carby, salty goodness that is mac ‘n cheese is close to heaven. As Forbes reported in a 2017 article “This is Your Brain on Cheese:” “Cheese contains casein. It also contains casein fragments called casomorphins, a casein-derived morphine-like compound. Basically, dairy protein has opiate molecules built in.

When consumed, these fragments attach to the same brain receptors that heroin and other narcotics attach to … basically, if milk is cocaine, cheese is crack.” For those of us not ready to kick the habit, here are the four best bites of mac 'n' crack, er cheese, you’ll find in town.

PETITE PERFECTION Check out their new digs downtown, and don’t forget to get the mac. The Flaming Buoy lobster mac and cheese was the first I tried in Key West and led to obsession. They use penne as the base, top the cheesy pasta with fresh shaved parmesan, and the superstar? Generous chunks of lobster meat. It’s always perfectly tender, not chewy. Available in appetizer or petite sampler portion, as Tripadvisor reviewer peeps225 said: “Lobster Mac and Cheese to Die For!” R.I.P.

DOWN HOME DELICIOUS Served in a hot cast iron skillet, the mac at Firefly is nothing to mess with, and dare I say, better than grandma’s. The skillet mac 'n' cheese is straightforward, with the sharp tang of cheddar and the hot, bubbly top. The sauce is creamy, the flavor rich and smoky (in addition to white cheddar, they use smoked cheddar and smoked gouda). Firefly crowns their classic mac with a buttery biscuit crust. Seconds? Yes, ma’am.

ELEVATED COMFORT Bagatelle is the kind of place to kick back with a perfect martini or beautiful glass of wine.

It’s only fitting that their mac is beautiful: they use cavatappi pasta, to which the creamy three-cheese blend clings, embellished with, you guessed it: lobster. And it’s an appetizer pasta portion, which doesn’t overload the appetite and is the Italian way to precede an entrée.

THE DARK HORSE The only reason Off the Hook’s incredible, creamy, generous lobster mac rendition is a “dark horse” is that it’s not actually a mac. It’s gnocchi. Which makes it perhaps even more pillowy and comforting. It’s also now served in a brie cheese bowl (!) topped with crab breadcrumbs.
