In 2019, the Templeton Prize was awarded to Brazilian physicist and astronomer Marcelo Gleiser. His work blends science and spirituality. He is the first Latin American to win the award (worth $1.4 million) which honors “a living person who has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension.” The Nobel Prize amounts to just $1.1 million.

JONES RE-ELECTED CHIEF JUDGE Mark H. Jones was re-elected chief judge by his colleagues in he 16th Judicial Circuit on March 8. His next two-year term will start July 1.

Jones is currently assigned to criminal, civil and drug court cases in Key West and Marathon. He was recently appointed by Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady to the Judicial Management Council’s Workgroup on Appellate Review of County Court Decisions, which makes recommendations to the Supreme Court on Florida’s county court appellate structure and procedures.

Jones received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Before being elected to the Circuit Court bench in 1996, he practiced law in Key West as a Navy JAG, a private attorney and an assistant public defender.

FKCC hosts open house

The Florida Keys Watercolor Society's 37th Annual Judged Exhibition continues in the gallery of The Marathon Community Theater through Saturday, April 6.

Viewing is each Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and each Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the curtain and during intermission of “La Cage Aux Folles.”

Guests are invited to see more than 50 original watercolors by local artists. All paintings are for sale, with 20 percent to benefit the theater as “a gesture of artists helping the arts.”

Florida Keys Community College invites prospective students and their families to any of three open house events at the following FKCC locations, dates, and starting times: • Upper Keys Center: Tuesday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m.

• Middle Keys Center: Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m.

• Key West Campus: Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m.

Future students will meet faculty, staff, and current students and learn about bachelors’ and associate degrees as well as career training programs. Additional information shared will include: financial aid and scholarship opportunities; learning support resources; and student clubs and activities.

The Key West Campus Open House will feature a campus tour, with stops along the way that exhibit each college program, followed by lunch.

FKCC President Jonathan Gueverra will host a “President to Parent” talk with family members about guiding and supporting soon-to-be college students.

Traveling mural sets up on Big Pine Key The Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys has moved to the Artists in Paradise Gallery in the Winn-Dixie Plaza on Big Pine Key. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The project features individual canvases painted by local artists; the work spends months “on the road,” starting in Key Largo and ending in Key West. The public is invited to make a donation and receive a randomly selected canvas when the mural is disassembled.

Meads to speak in Marathon The Middle Keys Republican Club meets at the Marathon Yacht Club in Marathon on Wednesday, April 3. The guest speaker is Cheryl Meads. She was recently appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board. PREGNANT BATS FWC warns it’s maternity season

I

f you think bats may be living in your building, now is the time to check your attic, eaves or chimney spaces and take action to exclude them. Bat maternity season begins April 15 and runs through Aug. 15, and during this time it’s illegal to block bats from their roost.

“This is a critical time of year for bats, when they give birth and raise their young,” said Terry Doonan, a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologist and mammal conservation coordinator. “If bats are excluded from a building before their young can fly, they can become trapped inside and die.”

Florida is home to 13 resident bat species, including listed species such as the Florida bonneted bat. Some bat species roost in artificial structures, including buildings and houses. Although it is illegal to harm or kill bats in Florida, rules have been developed stating that legal exclusion of bats has to occur outside of the maternity season.

Bats cannot legally be captured or relocated.

Exclusion guidelines on how to remove bats from buildings can be found at MyFWC.com/Bats. Materials and methods to exclude bats can affect the success of that process. Bats are beneficial to people and are an important part of the ecosystem. The state’s native bats help keep insect populations under control, with the average bat eating hundreds of insects a night.

In addition to the benefit of keeping mosquitoes and other insects at bay for residents enjoying the outdoors, the value of insect suppression by bats to U.S. agriculture has been estimated to be in the billions of dollars.

There are several ways that Florida residents and visitors can help bats: • Preserve natural roost sites, including trees with cavities and peeling bark. Dead fronds left on palms can also provide roosting spots for bats.

• Put up a bat house.

• Report unusual bat behavior to: MyFWC.com/BatMortality.

Bats can carry rabies. Although infected bats may not become aggressive, like any other wild animal, they may bite to defend themselves if handled. Don’t touch or go near any wild animal, especially one that’s not acting normally. For more information about rabies, visit the Florida Department of Health website at FloridaHealth.gov.

udah Philip Benjamin was born on the island of St. Croix on Aug. 6, 1811. The Benjamin family moved to Savannah, Ga., in 1816.

Benjamin studied law at Yale University and moved to New Orleans where he opened his practice. He became a U.S. senator, representing Louisiana, in 1853, but left to join the Confederate States of America when it was founded in 1861. He was the government’s attorney general, secretary of war, and the secretary of state.

As the Confederacy fell, Benjamin and President Jefferson Davis attempted to escape.

Davis was captured, but Benjamin managed to elude authorities. It is said he made his way to Cedar Key, Fla. where he boarded a vessel and furthered his escape. He supposedly arrived at Knights Key in 1865 as the only passenger on board a 16-foot yawl named The Blonde.

At Knights Key, Benjamin boarded a larger ship bound for Havana. He eventually arrived in France where he lived as an American exile until his death in Paris on May 6, 1884.

raduation for the current Class XXVII of Leadership Monroe County is set for Saturday, April 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Playa Largo Resort and Spa, in Key Largo. The party is open to current and past members of the program, plus members of the public who are interested in learning more and applying to become a part of next year’s class. Leadership Monroe County is an educational non-profit community leadership organization, that graduates about two dozen students a year. The program is aimed at residents who are active in leadership roles within the private sector, government or community organizations. Through a series of one-, two- and three-day sessions over seven months, participants examine fundamental public and private segments throughout the county to inform and help them make quality leadership decisions which they can incorporate into their respective companies and organizations.

The program also provides an environment for mutual awareness on community issues, which class members confront. Sessions began in September 2018 with subsequent classes throughout Monroe County.

he Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) is supporting the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Fix A Leak Week” campaign, encouraging consumers to help put a stop to the more than 1 trillion gallons of water lost from household leaks each

The FKAA is redoubling its efforts through Sunday, March 24 to engage customers in becoming leak detectives and encouraging consumers to heed the “Check, Twist, Replace” catchphrase to help save water. Leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water loss in an average home every year — the amount of water it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry.

The FKAA is asking consumers to: • Check for leaks. Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, sprinklers and other fixtures. Also check for toilets with silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank, waiting 10 minutes, and seeing if color appears in the bowl before you flush. Don’t forget to check irrigation systems and spigots.

• Twist and tighten hose and pipe connections. To save water without a noticeable difference in flow in your bathroom, twist on a WaterSense-labeled faucet aerator.

• Replace the fixture if necessary. Look for WaterSense-labeled models, which are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.

In many cases, fixture replacement parts pay for themselves quickly and can be installed by handy do-it-yourselfers or local plumbing professionals.

Since toilet leaks are the most common household leaks, the FKAA is providing free toilet dye tablets to help customers find those often silent, intermittent leaks. Tablets can be obtained at any of FKAA’s three customer service offices.

On Saturday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m., the Autism Society of the Keys (ASK) is hosting Light It Up Blue, a fundraiser for the nonprofit.

Speakers include former City of Marathon Attorney and current City Manager of Miami Beach, Jimmy Morales; executive director of the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD), Michael Alessandri; and executive director of the Autism Society of the Keys, Jill Campbell.

The evening includes a Caribbean-style dinner by Irie Eats and entertainment by Reel Ting Steel Drums along with a silent auction, raffles and prizes.

Sponsors, silent-auction donations and volunteers are needed to help support this event. We are looking for people with the desire to help someone in their own family or someone they haven’t met yet who is touched by autism.

A kids’ zone is planned to entertain young attendees.

COP SCHOOL GRADS Sheriff’s Office trains citizens

O

n March 14, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay congratulated the 44 graduates of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Citizens Police Academy. Held every two years or so, the academy allows members of the public to learn more about local law enforcement.

The six sessions, held over as many weeks, are hands-on classes that cover everything from how to clear a building, conduct a felony traffic stop and understand how forensic science is actually used. (Spoiler: it’s nothing like TV!) The aim is to improve public understanding of the agency’s goals and methods. The final ceremony was held in the sheriff's hangar at Marathon airport, where members of the training team cooked burgers and hot dogs for a communal dinner. — Weekly Staff report

WHAT ARE THEY DOING IN TALLAHASSEE? Florida Keys Day participants focus on local issues

lorida Keys Day is an annual event. Every year, dozens of island residents from all walks of life descend on Tallahassee to lobby issues specific to Monroe County. Started as a Leadership Monroe class project by Rep. Holly Raschein, 10 years ago, the pilgrimage continues to this day. In the state Capitol, accustomed to its share of influencers, the Florida Keys Day are singular because no other county has a similar event.There are seminars scheduled, but many residents schedule “side bars” to reach the highest levels of state government. In 2019, it’s a crowd of new faces — not only from the Keys, but also new state leaders working with Gov. Ron DeSantis.

WAYNE CARTER, CEO,Middle and Lower Keys Association of Realtors Wayne Carter is doing double duty in Tallahassee this week. He’s a participant in the Florida Keys Day, but there is also a congregation of Realtors in the state capital.

“We’re able to cover both areas,” he said. “We’re focusing on water quality, natural resources and encouraging allocation of funds for Everglades restoration.”

Carter is paying special attention to HB 902 & SB 447, a bill that would further codify open and expired building permits: and also HB 447 & SB 902 regarding the private property rights of homeowners; preempting the regulation of vacation rentals to the state.

THERESA FABER, board secretary FIRM (Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe) “Carve out” are magical words for Keys influencers operating in Tallahassee. Theresa Faber and other local policy

makers contend the Keys are special for a variety of reasons, different from the rest of the state and deserving of special rules. Faber and the team for FIRM are watching two bills — SB 1476 and HB 1145. Both would limit Citizen wind insurance hikes to 5 percent a year in Areas of Critical Concern, i.e., the Keys.

“Both these bills go to committee this week. We’ve been meeting with everyone we can to make sure they support those bills,” she said.

MARK GREGG, board member, Florida Bay Forever This isn’t Mark Gregg’s first rodeo.

As a former mayor and councilman in the Village of Islamorada, Gregg is in Tallahassee to support Everglades restoration.

“The budget includes numerous improvements to the waterflow and I’m very optimistic,” he said, “but they have to make it to the finish line, be included in the final budget.” Gregg said the pervasive attitude in Tallahassee is one of bipartisan support for Everglades restoration. He said he’s most enthused about plans for the reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee and funding for a scientific center to study the causes of blue-green algae blooms and red tide.

JONATHAN GUEVERRA, President, Florida Keys Community College The number one priority for Jonathan Gueverra in Tallahassee is to push, for the third straight year, a name change for the community college. While FKCC offers baccalaureate programs, it needs a “state college” moniker to go with it. He said the traction is favorable this year, perhaps because the North Florida Community College has joined the struggle.

“Equally important is the issue of funding,” Gueverra said. FKCC receives 68.5 percent of the funding it “should,” while other institutions top out at 90 percent. “If we could get 78 percent of our funding, that would mean an additional $1.1 to $1.2 million.” Gueverra said the funding is critical for special offerings like the programs for construction apprenticeship and classes for those with intellectual disabilities.

“If we can’t sustain them, we hurt ourselves and the community,” he said.

“It’s a moving target, but we’re encouraged,” he said.

n March 18, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law making it legal for patients who have prescriptions for medical marijuana to smoke it. Previously, patients with prescriptions could only receive low-THC cannabis in pill, patch or tincture forms. According to the state Department of Health, there are currently 15 doctors in Monroe County who have qualified to prescribe marijuana.

In 2016, more than 70 percent of voters in Florida approved a constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana, but the Legislature passed a bill a year later that year that banned it in smokeable forms.

After signing the new law, DeSantis moved to dismiss a lawsuit that named the state Department of Health and undo a lower court decision which held the law to be unconstitutional.

Local governments would have to address the issue in contracts with recycling collectors and processing facilities.

• Felons' rights, CB CRJ 19-03: a house bill that codifies 2018’s Amendment 4 that relates to felon rights. The amendment restores voting rights of Floridians with felony convictions (except for murder and sexual offenses) after they complete all terms of their sentence and probation. The bill currently before the Florida legislature would expand the definition of sex offenders, as well as require felons to pay back all court fees and fines before having voting rights restored.

• Animal cruelty, SB 1738: This Senate bill would make it a first-degree misdemeanor to leave a dog restrained outside and unattended during a manmade or a natural disaster, such as a hurricane.

• Maritime law, SB 1666: This Senate bill could limit the stay of vessels outside of permitted, public mooring fields such as the outskirts of Boot Key Harbor in Marathon. It would prohibit the owner, operator or person in charge of a vessel from anchoring or mooring outside of public mooring fields for longer than a specified period of time, perhaps 60 days, before requiring the relocation or removal of the vessel.

CELEBRATING A QUARTER-CENTURY Music fest tops half-million dollars raised “This year might be the best Bay Jam ever, with a wide range of music including country, Afropsychedelic, funk-rock and reggae.”

Born 25 years ago, the annual Bay Jam music festival began with local musicians performing to raise money to provide grants for local students to pursue art and music endeavors in the face of steep state and federal funding cuts. A quarter-century later, Bay Jam, along with other ICE events, has awarded more than $500,000 to students and community organizations.

This year’s Bay Jam features a rising county music star, Stephanie Quayle, recently inducted into Country Music Television’s Next Women of Country. Last month, she made her third appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville (with Keys native Nyan Feder as music director, guitarist and backup singer). Quayle’s warm and powerful vocals are drawn from her Montana roots.

The event’s lineup also includes the return of Jackii Kennedy, the Michael Allman band (son of the rock legend Greg Allman), the Lower Mat Cats, a special children’s show by Micah Gardner, and more “This year might be the best Bay Jam ever, with a wide range of music including country, Afro-psychedelic, funk-rock and reggae,” said David Feder, director of ICE. He said proceeds from ICE events have supported ESE classroom music programs, in-school and adult-education workshops, and infrastructure for many local not-for-profits including Habitat for Humanity, Island Dolphin Care, Everglades Foundation, Wild Bird Center and others.

Students can download a scholarship application at www. keysice.com or contact their art or music teachers for more information. All Upper Keys high school students are eligible to apply, including home-schooled students.

The event is a family-friendly day of music and fun. Concertgoers can enjoy a swim at the bay-front beach just steps away from the ICE Amphitheater stage, check out arts and crafts vendors and sample a variety of food, as well as craft beer from the Florida Keys Brewing Company.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and music begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, at Founders Park, MM 87, Islamorada. Parking is free.

Ticket donations are $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID and free for seniors and kids under 12.

Marathon resident teaches youths how to sail, and other stuff!

hen Matt Gamel isn’t working his sailboat, he is teaching local youth how to sail and sustain the marine environment. After learning how to sail at 6 years old, Matt has been engulfed with all things marine-related.

“I worked my way up through the Englewood (Florida) Sailing Program, becoming a youth sailing instructor,” Matt said of his sailing history. “I was never into racing, just being on the water.”

A live-aboard at the Marathon Yacht Club, Matt and his fiancée, Vikki, came to the Keys after purchasing their sailboat to traverse the Caribbean Islands. Staying in Marathon to work on their boat, Matt’s former sailing coach contacted him about a job with the Middle Keys Community Sailing Program as its director, and he has been working to grow the program since. The program is put on by the Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation.\ “None of the Keys community sailing programs have ever done anything together, so I started to talk to the others and there were some mutterings about doing a regatta together, and that’s what we’re doing. It is a small, low-stress regatta with about 18 to 20 participants,” Matt said. “Our sailors are just starting to race and have never been part of a larger regatta; we are hoping it can be the start of more collaborative events.”

The first Inter-Keys Regatta will be held at the Key West Community Sailing Center, Saturday, Mar. 23 at 11 a.m.

“We were a summer program but trying to be year-round. We are low-cost; actually, we are the most affordable program in South Florida, and we pretty much operate on fundraising from the Benefit Bash,” Matt said proudly (see sidebar). “We want to keep costs down so anyone can participate; we provide lots of scholarships.”

Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation is inviting the public to a special party on Saturday, March 30 at 5 p.m. to benefit the MYCEF sailing programs. The Howard Livingston Trio will play, and guests can bid on special, nautical silent auction items. Tickets are $85 per person and include a pig roast and “pain killer” cocktails at the sunset party. What brought you to Marathon? A failed shakedown sail to the Dry Tortugas for a trip through the Caribbean Islands.

Nerdiest passion? Fossil hunting. I have spent hours scrolling through Google Earth looking for new creeks to explore, and have filled crates with woolly mammoth molars, megalodon teeth, as well as many other strange bits. My best find was the bottom half of a mastodon jaw.

What would be your superpower? Breathing underwater.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Southeast Asia and New Zealand.

Favorite annual event in Marathon? Lobster season; poking around undersea holes, finding new secret spots and coming home with tasty sea bugs.

AGENCIES TEST RESPONSE TO AN ACTIVE SHOOTING

est assured, Keys: first responders and government entities don’t plan to be taken off guard if there is an emergency at the harbor. The question “what would happen if …” was answered on March 14 as the Florida Keys Area Maritime Security Committee hosted a full-scale active shooter drill at the Key West Ferry Terminal. Bystanders and residents may have been confused as fire engines, ambulances and police officers zoomed to the scene, creating a remarkably realistic situation. Acting victims lay on the ground covered in “blood,” as first responders tended to them, and even “press” people who got too close were told to step back. It was intended to be as real as possible, to test all responding agencies — federal, state, and local — in case of a real maritime emergency.

“We always are trying to enhance response and update the internal plan,” said David Ambos, chief of contingency planning and port security specialist for the U.S. Coast Guard. “We then generate a report, update measures and take from lessons learned.” Updating would include possibly adding agencies to be involved or looking at response times from agencies outside the city limits. Evaluators from the Coast Guard were on hand to generate separate reports for each agency to improve procedures. The last full-scale update was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

The drill was a massive interagency undertaking, involving more than 100 participants. The agencies that would likely respond in a real emergency at the harbor are Customs and Border Protection, FBI, Coast Guard, Navy, Florida Emergency Operations, FWC, Highway Patrol and local responders like the Key West city manager, Key West Fire and Rescue, port director, Key West Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe Fire and Rescue. The Lower Keys Medical Center was also included in the exercise.

“Everyone works very well together. The interagency cooperation is great, no major problems,” said Ambos, who has been evolving the plan for several years. The first agency on hand would take charge so, in essence, every agency needs to be prepared.

For example, the fictional story on Thursday was an off-duty police officer, first on the scene, killing a shooter.

Public information officers were in a command room answering mock phone calls about the emergency. Reporters called in throughout the drill demanding information, and later, a test press conference was held by the heads of agencies with FBI running point. They answered real-time questions about the shooter and securing the harbor.

Every real-time situation was then evaluated and discussed by all agencies.

“When a significant event takes place, federal, state and local agencies establish a unified command to oversee the response,” said Capt. Francisco Rego, Coast Guard federal maritime security coordinator. “Exercises like this build cohesiveness between agencies within the port, strengthen our ability to form a coordinated response, and ultimately improve response times and effectiveness,” 1. KWFD is responding to victims at the harbor, assessing them by the severity of the injury and taking them to Lower Keys Medical Center.

lease follow me outside,” Charles Fulco said to his audience.

Each person held a solar eclipse viewer in front of his or her eyes to safely watch the sunset. As the crowd looked at the sun through protected eyes, Fulco urged, “Now, there’s going to be quite a few solar eclipses in the next four to five years, so hang onto these!”

Fulco is a dark-sky ambassador and educator. He travels around the country spreading awareness about the dangers of artificial light. He serves as the International Dark Sky Association local chapter director, and recently, he spoke at the Coral Restoration Foundation’s monthly Sips & Science talk.

As the crowd funneled back inside, Fulco began: “How sad is it that one light can obliterate an entire night sky?” Fulco showed a night landscape totally blown out by one streetlight. “This is why we need full cutoff LEDs and full coverage fixtures – the light shouldn’t go beyond the horizon line,” said Fulco.

Older light shades allowed light to shine upward into the sky, polluting the night, he said. In contrast, modern shades keep light shining downward and help eliminate glare from viewers’ eyes. “Isn’t that better?” Fulco prodded, smiling.

“Form follows function. In nature, if it’s wasted, it goes extinct,” he said. “We humans create useless things. What’s an upward light do?

Shine up my inseam? There’s really no purpose or reason for that.”

Instead, Fulco wishes that the func-

tion of buildings would determine their lighting. Most of our buildings are over-lit, he said, creating a night atmosphere that is anything but dark.

This excess of light has unintended consequences. Fulco said that, like humans, trees need sleep at night. Artificially lit trees become confused, and actually grow when they aren’t supposed to. Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles no longer can function as an observatory because the L.A. lights obliterate the view. Finally, in an ironic twist, socalled “safety lighting” in plazas and at banks actually ends up hiding crime. The light is so blinding and poorly directed that criminals have been known to hide in the glare.

“The Florida Keys are a particularly susceptible ecosystem,” adds Fulco. “We have baby sea turtles in the Keys whose eyes have naturally evolved over millions of years to follow the moonlight reflecting over the sea after they hatch. ... We’re leading them to Joey’s Clam Shack when they should be going towards the ocean.” Fulco has long advocated in the Keys for red, sodium lights that don’t affect baby turtles’ eyes in nesting areas. Some stretches on Overseas Highway near Marathon already have these lights in place.

Birds, fish, vegetation and even humans can also be negatively affected by light pollution.

Fulco ended with a plea, asking his audience to get involved and make different choices when it comes to light pollution and their ecological footprint in general. “We don’t have to be perfect, but we’ve gotta start somewhere and do better,” he said.

TRACK TEAM TREKS TO KEY WEST

The Marathon High track team traveled to Key West on March 14 for a meet with Key West and Coral Shores high schools. Marathon has been a team without a home track but that should all change next year with the new Marathon High athletic field. “We are a young team and eager to get on our school’s track next spring,” said track coach James Murphy. “We are five races into the season and getting faster each week.”

Next up for the Marathon team is the University of Florida Pepsi Relays in Gainesville after spring break.

FLYING HIGH Blue Angels featured in Southernmost Spectacular

The Naval Air Base’s “Southernmost Spectacular” on March 30-31 is an event that Keys residents anticipate every year with excitement. This year’s theme is “Women in Aviation.” (See opposite page.) Emma Harlow, heading Marketing and Sponsorship for the Naval Air Station’s events, said “So many women in the aviation world have done air shows together — it’s a small group, but we get to know each other intimately.” Harlow is pleased to feature aviators and performers like Patty Wagstaff and Julie Clark, who has performed for 40 years.

The air show will be held on the Boca Chica Air Field at MM 8. The famed Blue Angels dazzle the crowds with truly spectacular feats of flight, and they are joined by other flight demonstration teams showcasing maneuvers used in aerial combat. The Navy also opens up the base to delicious food vendors, live music and attractions like helicopter rides. The Naval Air Base has been a part of the Keys community since 1917, and it’s a special opportunity for a peek (up) into their operations.

Where can I park?

Northbound traffic enters at marina gate MM 7. Southbound traffic enters at main gate MM 8. VIP pass holders, ride share vehicles enter at commercial gate MM 9. Note that all ride share vehicles are required to ONLY use the gate at MM 9. If a ride share vehicles enters through any other gate they will not be able to exit the base since MM7 and MM8 are strictly entrance gates. What can I bring?

Chairs and blankets are permitted and recommended for general spectator seating. Strollers, carriages and wagons are permitted, but cannot take up aisle space in the seating areas. No pets other than service animals. No drones. Camera bags and diaper bags are allowed but subject to search. No outside food or beverages (no coolers) are allowed into the air show, other than baby bottles (non-glass) and small snack items for infant children.

ATM Keys Federal Credit Union will have ATMs on site during the air show. The mobile unit will be in the second row of vendors, centrally located.

Helicopter rides Helicopter rides will be offered throughout the two-day air show and rides will conclude when the U.S. Navy Blue Angels perform at 2:30 p.m. each day. The helicopter is able to accommodate three people per ride. Each ride is 4 minutes and cost is $39 per person. There is a single rider option for $34.

“There’s more to life than being a passenger,” said Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Other women listened and agreed. This year’s Key West Southernmost Air Spectacular, Saturday and Sunday, March 30 and 31, is celebrating women in aviation, from historical figures to the exciting pilots of today. March is Women’s History Month, coinciding with Naval Air Station’s most popular community event, the famed air show. NAS officials thought it would bea great time to honor women aviators who have made a difference.

Lt. Cmdr. Barbara Allen Rainey is the inspiration of the 45th anniversary of the first female Naval pilot,. In 1974, Rainey was the first of her class to earn Gold Wings and designated the first female aviator. Also, she became the first jet-qualified woman in the U. S. Navy, flying the T-39. In 1982, Rainey died at the age of 33, crashing a plane while practicing landings to avoid other aircraft. She did not live to see the multitude of women who have served all military branches, excelling in aviation.

The air show will host numerous civilian aerial acts by women. arolyne Coppolo, an herbalist from Redland Herb Farm, explains: A Chinese herbal professor told his students to go into the forest and bring him back some weeds. At the end of the day the students returned with bowed head and told the professor they failed to find any weeds. Only herbs. The professor told them they had done well and passed the test.

Here are some “weeds” that are actually classified as herbs.

• DANDELION: All parts of this herb plant are beneficial. The dainty yellow daisy can be made into wine. The buds are pickled like capers. Sautée the leaves with garlic and olive oil, then mix with your favorite pasta. Raw leaves can be added to salads. From the leaves you can also make tea, rich in Vitamins A and C and minerals.

You can buy dandelion tea bags or make a liquid concentrate from the leaves. The tea acts as a diuretic, detoxifying the blood.

The roots reduce inflammation and serve as an important liver stimulant.

• Most gardeners have had a problem with the weed called SPANISH NEEDLE (Bidenspilosa).

This herb is still used in traditional medicine in the Caribbean and Mexico. It is applied to infected wounds. As a tea it helps to relieve and heal respiratory and urinary tract infections. As a food source the leaves are nutritious and are used like spinach: sautéed and raw in salads. Chew the leaves

raw or make a tea for a natural mouthwash or to relieve sore gums. Bees and butterflies love the little white daisies’ nectar, which makes them prolific pollinators.

• CHICKWEED has succulent stems and leaves. Ointment made of chickweed is an astringent that is soothing to inflamed skin and heals wounds.

Its decoction is sipped as a cleansing tonic. It relieves constipation.

• Do you have the BUTTERFLY WEED in your garden? The Native American Indian Menominee tribe considered it the most important medical plant and it’s sometimes called the Pleurisy Root. Its tender shoots, roots and young seedpods are cooked as vegetables. The flowers are a crude sweetener. The roots are a specific treatment for pleurisy and bronchitis.

Beware of the right dosage, as too much of it may be dangerous.

Most importantly – make sure to consult the professionals first because “too much of a good (any)thing” can be harmful. As many of these plants are considered a pest, be sure not to gather them in the areas that have been sprayed with pesticide.

I hope you pulled some weeds and discovered that they are classified as herbs. Like the plant hunters 200 years ago consider yourself to be a treasure hunter.

n news from the hill: on March 14, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell shared some significant achievements in her first three months representing our district. She is moving forward on the issues that she committed to during her South Florida campaign, like supporting common sense gun control and environmental efforts. The House Democrat has recently joined two very high-profile committees, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Judiciary.

Locally, Mucarsel-Powell plans on meeting in the Keys with the Army Corp of Engineers this week to discuss water quality and leaky septic tanks (Miami-Dade has roughly 90,000 tanks).

“I am leading efforts to get stronger funding. It’s a request to deal with the leaky septic and Miami-Dade. It’s a part of the Florida Keys Water Quality Improvement Program,” said Mucarsel-Powell, who also is concerned with the poor water quality from Lake Okeechobee reaching us in the Keys.

“I asked for the meeting in the Keys because they need to hear from us. It’s an important opportunity for residents to weigh in, because we have footed the bill down here.”

Mucarsel-Powell is also focused on the coral disease affecting our reefs, and constituents from the Keys have visited her office about the situation.

“I am working with Mote Marine,” she said. “My focus is to

obtain funding to support coral research along the coast. Especially funding research and providing support to find answers to why the reefs are dying from this bacteria. It’s a critical issue, and we aren’t talking about it daily.”

At a federal level, the representative has been involved with the House introducing the Equality Act. With strong support from both the House and Senate, Mucarsel-Powell expects it to pass. The bill modifies existing civil rights legislation to ban discrimination against LGBTQ people as a national nondiscrimination law.

“This country was built on freedom and equality, and it’s time we finally pass this bill so that we guarantee LGBTQ Americans are not discriminated against because of who they choose to love,” she said.

Mucarsel-Powell also helped introduce, through the Judiciary committee, the Dream and Promise Act, HR6, providing “dreamers” — beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) — a path to citizenship.

“These people are our neighbors, our friends, part of our community, and have been here for decades,” she said. “They need to stop living in a state of limbo and know they can legally remain here. They have all been vetted. We need to allow them to participate in our economy and provide services we need, as nurses, educators and healthcare providers. I am very excited about that bill.”

The first bill Mucarsel-Powell co-sponsored — the For the People Act of 2019, HR 1 — has passed the House. “It’s the largest anti-corruption voter protection bill that has ever passed through the House. It was a vote to take dark money out of

politics. It stops voters from being purged off the rolls. We have had a lot of those problems in Florida.”

“It restores faith in democracy,” she said.

She also co-sponsored the Background Checks Act of 2019, or HR 8, which passed the House; the proposal is a step toward tighter gun control.

“That was another huge achievement for me and our community, because I made a promise I was going to do everything I could to pass common sense gun reform laws. HR 8 is the biggest piece of gun reform legislation passed in the past 25 years through the House.”

“I don’t stop,” MucarselPowell said. “I take advantage of every moment in D.C. I go back to the main reasons why I ran: issues important to Florida, like health care and gun control.”

ave we got that hot mocha done yet?”

Noon is fast approaching but there are still cars and people on foot waiting on both sides of Curly’s drive-through coffee house, as Rachel and Fenn, a young couple from California, let their barista skills fly as fast as they can to appease the coffee drinkers’ thirst.

Curly’s Coffee Company has been open almost eight years.

The little building used to serve as a ticket stand for boats that took people fishing.

“It took a while for the locals to get used to the drive-through idea.

This type of coffee service is very common on the West coast but not here,” explained the owner David Smythe, more commonly known as Curly.

But Curly and his then 17-year old daughter Sahalie’s diligent work paid off — the small, yellow coffee hut on the corner of 116th St. Ocean and Overseas Highway has been embraced by locals and visitors.

Curly is originally from California but raised his family in Bend, Oregon. He used to be a contractor and some of the buildings he had put up were coffee shops he later frequented.

“But I always knew I wanted to

come to Marathon. It’s a great town and I love to fish.”

The blend of three different types of coffee beans, harvested in Indonesia and Africa, is roasted in Troutdale, Oregon and delivered to his shop every two weeks.

“Once the beans are ground, the coffee will be in your cup within two minutes,” said Curly.

That’s why it tastes so fresh and good. The most popular drinks are mochas and lattes, hot or iced.

The Italian espresso machine came with a high price. “I had to teach myself how to fix it, if necessary. Help is far away, but the coffee house stays open every day of the year,” said Curly, smiling. He added that some customers have a new Christmas morning tradition — coffee from Curly’s.

His business has served as a stepping stone not just for his own daughter but to many other young people who have gotten their first work experience and training in responsibility in his little coffee hut.

“I feel very fortunate to be a part of this community and have such a fun business to run,” said Curly.
