ropping enrollment numbers have Island Christian School’s viability in jeopardy, but a last-minute effort is underway to keep the facility open and running past the 2018-19 school year.

Senior Pastor Trevor Mann issued and read a letter to the Island Community Church congregation during a recent service regarding the reality facing the school, namely the financial challenges from the 2008 recession and Hurricane Irma to changing demographics in the Keys. The real estate trend and families picking up and leaving were other factors noted.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, there will be a meeting at the Family Life Center gymnasium for parents and the community to come up with ideas and suggestions on how to keep the school open and going. Carrie Tudor, local resident who sends two kids to ICS, told the Weekly that everyone is encouraged to attend.

“We love this school and we don’t want to see it end,” she said.

Today, 107 students are enrolled at ICS. If the school enrolls 145 fullpaying students in grades kindergarten to 12th, receives donations of at least $400,000 or gets a substantial combination of the two, ICS will continue through the next school year. However, those target goals need to be met

by March 1 or else the school will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

“We would much rather have students than donations,” Mann told the Weekly. “One, we are here to share the love of Jesus with students while giving them a great education. Two, money will only buy us another year.

While we would use the next school year to increase enrollment, we don't want people to be misled about their investment. We would be looking at the same problem next year if enrollment doesn't increase.”

Mann said church elders and the financial advisory board have met since last summer over possible options to keep the school open, including a pre-K to sixth-grade model. Mann said there was no sustainable pre-K to 12th grade models with fewer than 145 students.

of the school year. She says she wants everyone to stay unified through the challenging time.

“We’re not giving up on our children,” White said. “My letter was to tell parents we are staying committed to the end and they can count on us to provide a quality education.”

ICS has served the community since 1974. Like Mann, White said the economy is playing a major factor in enrollment numbers not only at ICS, but other schools as well.

Former students and ICS parents took to social media to share their responses to the news. Milly Mamorsh, whose son went to ICS, said she would never have enough words to thank Island Christian for her son’s education.

Amy Rosasco has been an Island Christian School parent for 13 years. Her daughter graduated from the school and now attends Florida State University. Her two sons are currently enrolled in fourth and seventh grades.

“The kids learn Christian values and talk about God openly,” she said. “So, we’re very saddened by this news and praying for a miracle.” Rosasco said the school has lost teachers and students since Hurricane Irma. “I’m not surprised by this news, but we are very concerned.”

“The school went through so much before I came,” White said.

“My first year, we were getting our curriculum online and teachers working together. We had so many things cause disruption, especially with Irma. This year, the quality of our education was up but enrollment down based on everything happening through the years and Irma.”

Mann said they’re thankful for the parents, students, staff and community for making Island Christian School the pillar that it is. He said the school has received countless encouraging messages and phone calls from former staff, students, parents and others who lives were positively changed by ICS.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Fish For Holly a success

T

he inaugural Fish For Holly Sailfish Tournament was held at the Islander Resort on Jan. 5 and 6. Some 56 boats and 207 men, women and children fished the beautiful waters of Islamorada in the Florida Key, catching and releasing 101 sailfish.

The memorial tournament was established to honor the life of Holly Given, who was murdered in December 2017 by her boyfriend, who then killed himself. The Holly Given Fund was established thereafter, and one year later, put on its first sailfishing tournament.

The tournament exceeded expectations with the amount of money raised. Nearly 400 people attended both Friday night and Saturday night at the Islander’s Florida Keys History & Discovery Center. It was the largest tournament turnout Islamorada has ever seen.

Teams fishing in the Fish For Holly tournament competed for prizes from top boat, top female, male, and junior anglers, as well as the oldest angler to catch a sail – “old salt.”

by Capt. Jim Hendrix, finished the day with nine sailfish releases, getting their names placed on the perpetual trophy donated by Release Marine and displayed at Tackle Center of Islamorada. They took home additional awards for Top Female angler and Overall angler, Kristina Thompson; second place overall angler Caroline Hendrix; and largest tuna, weighing in at 28 pounds.

The runner-up team with seven sailfish releases was the Catch-22 with Capt. Hunter Barron, and third place went to Fishbone with five releases led by Capt. Bill Chapman. Third place Overall angler went to Shannon Chapman aboard the Fishbone, and the Overall Male angler went to Travis Butters on the Fearless. For the junior division, first place went to Grant Kavelir on Peacekeeper, second to Connor Daniels on Kalex, and third to Reef Bennett on Conetagious. The Old Salt award went to Jeff Creary on Chasin’ Sails.

The tournament was a fundraiser for The Holly Given Fund, to be able to provide scholarships and training to Florida Keys community members who need assistance with education, business, and professional training, in addition to working closely with the Domestic Abuse Shelter of the Upper Keys.

t was Feb. 16, 1835 when President Andrew Jackson, acting on the Indian Removal Act of 1830, gave the order that all Seminole Indians were to be removed from the Florida Territory.

The act helped to create the second escalation of the Seminole War and bring hostilities beyond the mainland and into the Keys, where activity culminated in the murderous assault at Indian Key on Aug. 7, 1840.

Local mythology about the attack assigns blame to the dubious wrecker king of Indian Key, Jacob Housman. Admittedly, he submitted to the Territorial Legislature a proposal to eradicate the Indian threat for a bounty of $200 a head.

Whether or not the Indians ever got wind of Housman’s proposal is open for debate. However, his plan was never actualized—a fact that has not stopped the blame for the attack from landing on Housman’s historically ambitious shoulders.

The idea that the Indians were just out to get Housman would make sense if the attack had been an isolated one and Indian Key had not just been an outpost left suddenly unguarded, but the Indian Key attack was not an isolated event.

Rather, it was one in a series of events that moved in a southern trajectory that included: the Cooley Attack, New River Massacre, Jan. 6, 1836 (Fort Lauderdale); Cape Florida Lighthouse Attack, July 23, 1836 (Key Biscayne); Garden Cove Attack, June 25, 1837 (Key Largo); Cape Sable, April 10, 1840; Indian Key attack Aug. 7, 1840.

“My husband had three heart stents put in four years ago,” said Cathy Brewer. “That was a memorable Valentine’s Day for me.”

“When I first was dating my husband, I came home from work and was expecting a nice dinner,” says Hatti Jenkins. “I came back to find that he made toast with tomatoes and cheese on top. It was disgusting. To make up for it, he took me out to dinner the next day. My husband is now a very good cook and has made Valentine’s Day special every year since!”

“One time in high school I bought a girl flowers and sent them to her house,” says Jordan Selders. “She sent a picture back thanking me, but it was a different set of flowers from a different guy.”

“In high school, my boyfriend of four days gave me a potato for Valentine’s Day,” said Shylyn Pierce. “He had a great speech prepared about how I was like a potato.

He said I was like a potato because everyone loves potatoes. I buried it in my yard.

We’re still friends to this day.”

ahuna competitors are off to the races, raising funds through activities and events in a bid to be crowned Big Kahuna on March 16 at the Islander Resort. From Casino Night and a cornhole tournament to a lionfish fry and an upcoming paint night, Kahunas are having fun and staying creative with their fundraising activities.

Funds raised go to aid The Good Health Clinic’s mission to provide health care to low-income and uninsured residents in the Keys. With offices in Marathon and Tavernier, the clinic can be the primary-care home for those who meet the eligibility requirements. Money raised through the Kahuna fundraiser supplies 20 percent to 25 percent of the clinic’s operating funds.

“This group of Kahunas are one of the most event-active groups, and they’re doing all kinds of things,” said Kate Bannick, executive director for The Good Health Clinic. “These all are fun and well attended events. I’m super pleased with all the things going and super pleased with the work each Kahuna is doing.”

OFFICIALS TURN FOCUS TO DREDGING, RULE INTERPRETATION

U

.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was in the Keys on Feb. 7 to visit a canal at Key By the Sea in Marathon. It was his third visit and, as if on cue, fish frolicked and jumped in the clean canal.

“It sure looks a lot healthier,” Rubio said, noting the canal once was choked with entire mobile homes and other debris following Hurricane Irma.

Rubio was instrumental in securing the federal USDA funds to help with canal cleanup in the Keys — a project that began in mid-August of 2018, and that is going exceedingly well — under budget and ahead of schedule.

Keys officials are set to ask for an extension on the $45.2 million grant. With 83 percent of the canals cleaned, and about $30 million in funds remaining, the county is leading the effort to refocus on dredging, or what it calls sediment removal.

“We’re not asking for additional money,” said Rhonda Haag, the county’s director of Sustainability and Projects.

“We want them to reconsider some of the canals and sediment removal projects they had previously rejected.

And we’re going to ask for a two-month extension at the local level” of the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) grant, managed by the USDA. Haag said if the sediment removal projects are ultimately approved, there will likely be another extension request that would have to be approved in Washington, D.C. The county began submitting requests for sediment removal under the same grant five months ago. While Islamorada had some debris in the canals, the worst problems in the village boundaries were associated with sand-choked canals making navigation possible only for very shallow draft boats.

Haag said the county submitted a list of 34 canals to be dredged to the USDA. That has already been knocked down to 10 canals, still under review. The sedimentclogged canals have been identified in Big Pine Key (5), Marathon (3), and Islamorada (2).

“We don’t understand,” County Administrator Roman Gastesi told Rubio. “The money is there. There are some canals in Islamorada that you can walk across.”

She said only two canals in Islamorada have been approved for sediment removal, and the USDA has only agreed to clean part of the waterway.

“The funds remaining should be spent in Islamorada.

We were supposed to get $6 million of the overall grant, and so far only $2 million has been expended in Islamorada,” Gillis said.

Haag said the NCRS local managers are only approving sediment removal where deposits are highest, and that portion of the canal varies by location.

“First, we are very thankful to NRCS for the grant and the service. It’s very good,” Haag said. “But this particular issue seems to be a matter of interpretation of the guidelines.” Haag said the same grant was used to clear entire canals — not just portions — 20 years ago after Hurricane Georges. “The strict interpretation could be happening at the local level; we’re not really sure what’s going on. We seek to restore the canals to their pre-Irma condition.”

The county is administering the canal cleanup and sediment removal on behalf of its constituents and those residing in municipalities. The bulk of the grant originates with the USDA, and 25 percent matching funds are paid out of state Stewardship Act funds.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead the cleanup. Working with Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island, the workforce numbers about 60 people using grapple trucks, sonar boats and barges.

Wood Environment is monitoring the work.

There are two methods of sediment removal — hydraulic (pumping) and mechanical (an excavator on a barge). Haag said only the hydraulic method is allowed in unincorporated Monroe County and is the most expensive.

“If we get approval, and the mechanical method was better to deal with the type of sediment in the canal, I would have to ask the county for a waiver,” she said.

FREEBEE FUN A zero-emissions way to get around CHARLES FULCO

ately you may have noticed brightly colored vans shuttling passengers up and down Overseas Highway in Islamorada.

Freebee Inc. is a no-charge, environmentally friendly shuttle service for tourists and locals alike that originated in Miami more than six years ago, and has expanded into Islamorada.

“So far, the feedback has been great,” said John Janusz, economic and community development manager for Freebee. Last year, Village Council approved a six-month trial period for the Freebee service for Upper Matecumbe Key to see if it’s worth bringing to the area on a permanent basis.

He cites the “win-win” experience, for visitors who use the service as well as the hotels, restaurants and other places of interest they patronize. Freebee uses ambassadors/ drivers who are more than happy to suggest their favorite spots to the out-of-towners they shuttle around. Local businesses appreciate the exposure and are happy to provide special parking areas for the Freebee vans in return. In addition, local businesses can sponsor a van, as have Islamorada Beer Co. and Sunset Inn. “It’s an innovative way to get your name and message out to Islamorada,” said Janusz.

“Our vans serve as a company's moving billboard.”

So, what makes this shuttle service unique?

For starters, the vehicles are eco-friendly — electrically powered and quiet, getting about 65 miles per charge with their latest-generation lithium batteries (batteries are recharged in Upper Matecumbe Key). They can transport up to 14 passengers at 25 mph, while protecting them from sun and rain. The vans avoid the alltoo-often traffic jams that plague Islamorada by jutting down side streets and other lessfrequented roads, giving tourists an off-thebeaten-path tour of the area, with the added benefit of introducing them to shops they may not have otherwise discovered.

Freebee got its start in Miami, where it has fully supported the city’s Climate Action Plan, allowing its riders to become part of the solution to reduce carbon emissions in and around Miami-Dade area.

Riders are telling me that we saved them from getting into their own cars after an evening of bar-hopping.

Potential riders download the Freebee app onto their smartphones, browse their suggested “Places to Bee” to select a destination, request a ride, get picked up and enjoy the experience. Anyone can catch a ride on Freebee on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight, and on Sundays between 11a.m. and 8 p.m.

“We’re discovering that people in Islamorada love getting into these vehicles,” said Janusz. "We’re also discovering an unanticipated benefit as well. Riders are telling me that we saved them from getting into their own cars after an evening of bar-hopping, and possibly getting into a whole lot of trouble with the police.”

The response has been so positive, he said, that Freebee is looking into expanding all the way down to Key West, via a system of larger, main vans running the length of the Keys with smaller, “connector” shuttles taking riders to their final destinations.

he 17th annual Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys Cocktail Party will take place Friday, March 1 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. With a “Hard Hats and High Heels� theme, the event will be at the Florida Keys Conference Center, Islander Resort, MM 82 Oceanside.

All proceeds are used for construction of homes for low- to moderate-income families in the Upper Keys. HFHUK is currently building 16 homes on Windley Key, one in Key Largo and another four are in the planning stage in Islamorada. Habitat at Windley Key is the biggest endeavor ever for the affiliate. The need for affordable housing drastically increased after Hurricane Irma, and community support will help ensure funding for completion of these homes.

The cocktail party will offer food prepared by Islander Chef Andy at food stations, passed hors d’oeuvre, an open bar and live music. Guests will have an opportunity to bid on items during live and silent auctions, featuring more than $100,000 in trips, art, shopping sprees, boating items and more. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Dave Feder.

Following the auctions there will be a DJ for dancing and dessert under the stars on the patio overlooking the ocean. “Hard Hats & High Heels� means a casual flair for the evening — casual but classy with an edge. eep the vibe alive and get your snook on: Snooks Bayside in Key Largo offers some of the finest waterfront dining along with breathtaking views of the sunset.

Snooks started in 1994, and owner Roni Hammer said it’s always been part of the Florida Keys tradition. As a notable restaurant in the Upper Keys, Snooks went through some major changes following a catastrophic fire in 2010 that burned it to the ground.

“This a relatively new venue for us having been here several years now,” Hammer said. “It’s a new home so to speak. It’s been excellent as it’s been very popular with locals, visitors and snowbirds.”

Patrons frequenting Snooks can expect a beautiful restaurant with every table featuring a good glimpse of the sunset. Hammer says tables by the water are highly sought after, and she also notes the sunset celebration where a random person is selected to pull a rope to sound the antique ship horn.

“People come and make reservations and specifically ask to be able to do that. That’s quite the tradition here,” she said.

Snooks’ menu boasts fresh ingredients, from daily local catch to certified angus beef and chicken dishes. Open for lunch and dinner, start off with an appetizer such as the seared, rare blackened mahi tuna. It’s served with mango salsa, sweet Thai chili and wasabi dressing and topped with wonton noodles. As for a drink, try a Snooks original in the “XXX” Rum Runner. It’s

made with several rums, banana and blackberry liqueurs, lime and orange juices and grenadine and served on the rocks. Patrons also won’t go wrong with the Snooks blueberry mojito muddled with fresh blueberries, lime and mint.

For the entrée, try the pistachio crusted yellowtail.

The tasty and mouth-watering entrée is served with mango salsa, chili and burre blanc. With red potatoes and green beans on the side, people will leave satisfied and wanting to come back for more. Or try the coconut mahi mahi that’s dredged in sweet coconut with Key lime sauce. Finish with several dessert selections that include turtle cheesecake, chocolate peanut butter pie, Key lime pie and a chocolate toffee mousse.

“We have lots of different varieties,” Hammer said.

“We do yellowtail, hogfish, mahi mahi, triple tail, cobia, tuna, and all kinds of shell fish. Of course we have stone crab and we also do steak, tenderloin and New York strip.”

OCEAN LIFE Seagrass expert first lecturer of series

A

n expert on seagrass will discuss how climate change is having an effect on the plants next week in Key Largo.

Fourqurean is one of the top seagrass experts in the world. His research was the first to create a global inventory of stored carbon in seagrasses. He is a member of the Blue Carbon Initiative, where the mitigation of climate change through the restoration of marine ecosystems is studied. His lecture will discuss the impacts of global climate change on seagrasses and how protecting them can help save our planet.

The lecture series, which is done in partnership with Florida International University, showcases experts in the marine sciences. The series began in 2011 and the partnership with Florida International University began in 2012.

Additional lectures are scheduled for March 28, April 25 and May 23. The lectures are free and open to the public. Each event features a meet and greet at 6 p.m., with the lectures starting at 7 p.m.

JJ’s Fishing Week offers $1.75 million purse

O

rganizers of the Jimmy Johnson Fishing Championship Week, scheduled March 2-9, are offering what is believed to be the largest guaranteed purse winnings in Florida tournament history — $1.75 million.

Notable National Football League players and celebrities are expected to join two-time Super Bowl–winning coach Jimmy Johnson during his namesake Florida Keys event.

The two-day “Quest for the Ring” National Billfish Championship represents the signature tournament set to award the guaranteed purse.

Some of the sport’s toughest billfish competitors are attracted to the team event that targets sailfish and other billfish species along with fun-fish species. The championship tournament features both a catch-and-release division and weighted division.

The Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill bar, restaurant and cabana complex at MM 104 bayside in Key Largo serves as tournament headquarters, with action-packed parties between world-class fishing forays.

Johnson’s friends, celebrity athletes and entertainers are to join the pros for a fun-filled day of competitive fishing in support of their favorite charities in the Celebrity Pro-Am event Thursday, March 7. At day’s end, award celebrations are to be held at Ocean Reef Club.

In the main event, the two-day Billfish Champi-

onship scheduled Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, boat teams compete for the guaranteed overall $1.75 million purse.

The total general-entry payout to winning teams in the catch-and-release division is $465,000. A second, weighted division (heaviest fish overall) is to pay out $250,000 over firstthrough fourth-place teams.

The Billfish Championship’s first-place team will receive $200,000 and all anglers on the winning boat receive authentic, custom-designed Jimmy Johnson’s NBC Championship rings. Secondthrough eighth-place teams also are awarded cash prizes, among several other angler categories.

A charity auction, dinner and all-tournament award ceremony with Jimmy's Backyard BBQ at the Big Chill concludes the event Saturday night.

Boat entry information and the full schedule of events can be found at jjfishweek.com. Anglers who want to participate in the event but do not own a boat, or prefer to travel to the tournament without one, can book a professional charter boat operator in the Upper Keys.

The weekend of fishing events supports the Community Initiatives Foundation, a tax-exempt organization dedicated to supporting various fundraising programs throughout South Florida that include Tranquil Shores Foundation.

ART GUILD NAMES JUDGES 53rd Judged Art Show set for next month

T

he Art Guild of the Purple Isles is preparing for its 53rd annual Judged Art Show that’s set for March 6-24 at Keys History & Discovery Center at the Islander Resort, MM 82.1 oceanside, Islamorada. The judges for the show are Donna Underwood and M. Ann Lynch.

Underwood has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in art education from Florida International University. She is the director of fine arts at Westminster Christian School, where she taught art for 16 years.

The Dade Art Educator Association awarded her the Jackie HinchySipes Art Advocacy Award in 2010 and the Skevy Ralis High School Art Education Award of Honor in 2017.

She has co-chaired 22 annual Miami-Dade Public School/Miami Watercolor Society Student Art Shows and co-chaired workshops and seminars for teachers. She has adjudicated art shows locally and on a state level and serves as a member of Palmetto Bay's "Art in Public Places" committee.

Underwood has exhibited and won awards in art shows, has illustrated a children’s book, “I Am Moxxy Dog!” and the Miami Youth Museum cookbook, has done commissioned paintings, and has designed a variety of social and civic invitations, including the Lowe Art Museum’s.

Lynch graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Art & Architecture in 1972.

She moved to the Keys in 1984.

Living among the native vegetation has brightened her palette considerably, by infusing her paintings with a rich, vibrant flavor and texture. She is particularly attracted to the high contrast of light when reflected in many scenes. The natural beauty of the Keys has become a recurring subject for her watercolors.

She has been a member of the Florida Keys Watercolor Society since 1985 and has received several ribbons for her entries in the society’s annual juried show. She is a signature member of FWS as her work has been included in the 2001, 2004 and 2008 Florida Watercolor Society Exhibitions. Her artwork has been shown in galleries in Ohio and Florida and is in many private collections. Her work is exhibited at Shady Palm Art Gallery and various Marathon businesses.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. at Islamorada Beer Company in Islamorada’s Morada Way Art District, and is free.

Keys guitarist Dave Feder and friends will perform as her back-up band.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, Dan Bern, a prolific songwriter and performer with a dozen albums, will perform at Portside Gallery in Islamorada’s Morada Way Art District at 7 p.m. His painting exhibit, "Painting and Song," with portraits of athletes and celebrities, opens from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the performance, and will remain at the gallery for the next few weeks. Tickets for the concert, with limited seating, are $15. There is no charge for the art show.

“We are fortunate to have two performers with strong followings return to the Keys,” said Feder, president of ICE. “Joanne’s passionate delivery, outstanding vocal range and dynamic stage presence consistently raise the roof and rock the house.”

Feder said Bern is a witty and irreverent performer. “In addition to his colorful and commanding portrait work, Dan has written several books, was an awardwinning sports columnist, and a tennis pro who taught tennis to the late Wilt Chamberlain.”

Full name? Nickname? Jennifer McComb. Everybody calls me Jen as that’s on my license plate.

Where are you originally from? Los Altos, California.

Los Altos means “the heights.”

How did you get involved with Rotary? I joined in 2013.

I went to a homebrew competition where I got to taste different beer from home breweries. It seemed like a fun group of people organizing it, so I asked who was running it and they said it’s Rotary. I was a little surprised and thought (Rotary) was old people running it. When I saw young people doing it, I said this is something I can see myself doing.

very Wednesday before she heads to work, Jennifer McComb convenes the Rotary Club of Key Largo for a 7:30 a.m. meeting. With 50 members in the club, McComb said she was hearing from people who couldn’t afford the dues or couldn’t meet early in the day. That issue’s been addressed through an idea she heard while attending a convention in Atlanta on how to grow the club.

Today, a satellite club meets on Monday evenings. The focus is still on service projects, but the regular meeting time is more relaxed and convenient for many Upper Keys locals.

“We started a happy hour meeting at a time when people can come, and we have a lot of teachers, police and people who work during the day and come,” McComb said. “We immediately got 34 members, so that’s pretty good. By adding the happy hour meetings, we’re able to reach more Key Largo residents who want to do good in the community.”

There are about 80 members between the Key Largo clubs.

“The Key Largo Rotary Club does a lot of vocational scholarships, and the new satellite club wants to help older people,” she said.

McComb, who formerly worked for the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, has managed fundraising and public affairs for the entire county for the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter since November 2017. She said she’s enjoying the new adventure with the shelter, which has a variety of programs for children and families.

“I just really like the idea of working here and seeing kids every day and being closer to the cause that I’m supporting,” she said. “It’s pretty neat to get to hear the stories of kids who were in a bad situation leave with a good family. It’s a new adventure that I’m enjoying.”

What do you do in your spare time? I have two dogs, so I spend much time vacuuming.

Tell me about your dogs.

One is a black lab and newsworthy; she’s been in the national dock diving competition. She qualified in 2016 and 2018. Her name’s Hadley, named after Ernest Hemingway’s wife, and I drive her around. I also have a rescue dog, named Alabama. She was found here in front of Alabama Jack’s. She’s a rescue mix.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day? I have a new boyfriend and he’s great.

We’re thinking about going to jam night at the American Legion. Hundreds of people go to it.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? Let my dogs out. They wake me up between 5 and 5:30.

Best piece of advice you’ve received? We have this Rotary key to success, and each president writes something on it with advice to the next person. It says “You can’t please everybody.”

Favorite place you’ve traveled? I like to go to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. It’s supposed to be the biggest hot tub in the world. Upcoming, I’m going to Rotary’s International Convention in June.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a mommy and an artist.

Today I’m a dog mom.

Your favorite part of working at Florida Keys Children’s Shelter? Every day my job is different. I get to meet a lot of different people.

What is your dream car? A Maserati.

If you could have lunch with anybody, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you eat? Paul Harris, who founded Rotary International back in 1905, and we'd have vegan deep dish Chicago pizza.

What’s something people don’t know about you? I can recite the alphabet backwards quickly. I learned for a church musical called “The Enchanted Journey.”

Finish these sentences...

If I had a super power, it would be ... Communicating with animals. If we could hear what they had to say, there would be a lot more compassion and a lot more vegetarians.

My go-to drink is ... sparkling wine, with my girlfriends at Snapper's every Sunday.

My life would be complete if ... there were no such thing as abused animals or kids.

I love the Florida Keys Children Shelter because ... you never know what will happen there each day.

From The Whistle Stop, bra walkers marched down U.S. 1 to Islamorada Beer Company, Lion’s Lair, Islander Resort, Shrimp Shack, Florida Keys Brewing Company, Green Turtle Inn and Islamorada Moose Lodge. As walkers proceeded from stop to stop, they were met with many honks from cars passing by, and the money raised all went to support The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys’ mission to offer assistance to qualified cancer patients who live in the Keys.

aria Estrada and her husband Peter are busy preparing flower bouquets at their shop on the Lazy Days property at MM 79 Oceanside. Valentine’s Day is approaching and deliveries are about to explode.

“I never count how much we prepare and deliver, but it’s a lot,” Estrada said.

The weeks and days leading up to Valentine’s Day are crucial for the shop and especially her nonprofit, Maria’s Hope & Prosperity, as she looks to raise enough funds to purchase laptops for students in the Upper and Middle Keys. Last year, Estrada was able to buy and distribute 50 to schools. This year, she’s upping her goal to 60.

“This community knows how important school supplies are.

Without them, it’s hard to get homework done,” she said. “We’re doing this to change the life of students and develop a future for them in the community.”

Estrada says the community is in need of people in the trades, including electricians, plumbers, mechanics and builders to name a few. She says the community would benefit with more tradespeople.

“I strongly believe when children in this community and country have that kind of degree and skill, we are all winners,” she said.

“They can go to the salon, go out to eat at restaurants, buy a car, buy a house and do many things with what they earn.”

Prosek signs letter of intent with the U

H

e’s staying a “Cane” as he takes his talents to the college football level.

Coral Shores’ Robbie Prosek was all smiles as family and friends gathered on Feb. 6 to witness him sign his letter of intent to play at the University of Miami.

A 6’5’’, 225-pound two way end, Prosek committed to the University of Miami on Dec. 19, the first day of signing a National Letter of Intent. Chip Francoforte, assistant director of player personnel, extended an offer after the UM football staff reviewed Prosek’s film. He said he knew the “U” was for him when the university showed interest.

“I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else other than the ‘U,’” he said. “Plus, we run our practices like how they used to run theirs because Coach (Herbert) James, he played there and Coach (Rich) Russell played there.”

After signing his letter of intent next to his dad, Prosek told the Weekly that he’s “very excited, and little nervous” for the next step in his football career. Prosek is currently playing basketball for the Canes. On top of that, he’s getting a little lifting in.

“Once basketball is over on Thursday, I head up to Miami to a facility and I start training with Coach James,” Prosek said.

Prosek said he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support from his mom and dad.

“They helped me through the difficult times and easy stuff,” he said.

Prosek’s dad, Rob, said he’s proud of his son for the hard work as well as the football team.

“It’s kind of nice for the whole school,” Prosek said. “It’s not about him. It’s about everybody who was told they’re not good enough to play football and they’re not good enough to be out there. The team got him an opportunity to play in Miami. I’m really happy for the Keys and happy for him.”

Athletic Director Rich Russell said the school and department are extremely proud of a great kid and a great athlete. He says he’ll represent Coral Shores and the Upper Keys quite well.

“He’s really sort of the total package. He’s probably as popular a kid as we have in the school. He’s got a great personality and he’s a multisport athlete. He’s the real deal.”

ROTARY SUPPORTS YOUTH FOOTBALL The elusive Sam “Augie" Wampler was spotted at a recent Upper Keys Rotary meeting where he received a donation in support of the Upper Keys Youth Football League. Wampler’s father, a dedicated Rotarian, is credited with launching what is now the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market as a means to fund youth athletics. The event, which takes place next weekend, now raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for local scholarships.
