oe Weatherby told the Marathon City Council members they would not regret their decision to sponsor the permits needed to sink an artificial reef — i.e., a big, decommissioned ship — off Marathon.

Weatherby, who represents Artificial Reefs International of Key West and CRB Geological and Environmental Services of Marathon, said it could be done as early as next summer. But City of Marathon Chuck Lindsey cautioned him to be more prudent with his promises.

The Marathon City Council’s concerns were two-fold: financial and legal responsibility.

“The liability would lie with the City of Marathon, and that’s a terrifying word,” Weatherby said. “But the city would be protected under sovereign immunity just as they would be if there was a car accident on a municipal road. I can’t find one instance where a municipality was sued for a death while scuba diving on a shipwreck. And it happens.”

Weatherby told the council that the county holds the permit for the Spiegel Grove and Adolphus Busch and Key West is the permit-holder for the Vandenberg. Weatherbody told the council that neither entity has ever been sued, although some divers have died.

The city’s financial liability, initially, is next to none. Although permits are needed from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the U.S. Coast Guard, the fees are very low. However, once studies are needed — for example, to determine the nature of the bottom where the reef is proposed — then funding is needed.

Weatherby suggested to the council that it form a nonprofit oversight committee to manage the dive project. The financials of the project would be informed by factors including the type of boat it plans to sink, its current condition and the towing fees.

“The return on the investment is pretty good, plus you don’t have to paint the wrecks or staff them,” said Weatherby. He cited the Mohawk sunk off Fort Myers at a cost of $1.25 million.

The sinkings of both the Oriskany wreck off Pensacola, and the Vandenberg in Key West experienced significant cost overruns.

Weatherby told the council those costs can be kept in check by choosing the right vessel.

In other news: • The city approved a $1.34 million contract with low-bidder Discount Rock and Sand to begin repairs on Sombrero Beach. The plan covers everything from sand replacement to landscaping to repairs for the parking lot that would restore the beach to pre-Irma conditions, and will be partially paid for using FEMA reimbursements. An additional sum may be added to the contact later, to construct a retaining wall around the beachfront park.

Councilman Luis Gonzalez recused himself from the vote.

• The council discussed the March 10 deadline for the removal of the 21 FEMA trailers in Marathon. It also asked staff to bring back data on the 154 private trailers that have been issued permits following Hurricane Irma so it can decide which trailers can stay and which must be removed. The council agreed that primary homeowners who are making significant repairs can keep the trailer, and to come up with guidelines for other categories.

The council also asked to address the impact fees (for roads or safety or conservation land) that are added to permit fees that can, in some cases, double the cost of a permit.

• The council asked staff for a 20th birthday party for the City of Marathon, when it celebrates its anniversary in November.

• Capt. Don Hiller announced that streetlights are being repaired in Marathon, thanks to the efforts of Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

• City Manager Chuck Lindsey reported positive outcomes after a trip to Tallahassee to meet with the new state leadership. Although state government has reversed its policy about 100 percent auditing regarding Category A and B hurricane expenses at the state level, that is not immediately going to improve Marathon’s situation regarding unpaid expenses but rather the process for future storms.

However, the city has received its first reimbursement of almost $250,000 from FEMA. Lindsey said that meetings with the state Department of Economic Opportunity were also positive. “There was an air of support. It wasn’t adversarial at all,” Lindsey said.

RUBIO VISITS CLEAN CANALS

OFFICIALS TURN FOCUS TO DREDGING, RULE INTERPRETATION

U

.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was in the Keys on Feb. 7 to visit a canal at Key By the Sea in Marathon. It was his third visit and, as if on cue, fish frolicked and jumped in the clean canal.

“It sure looks a lot healthier,” Rubio said, noting the canal once was choked with entire mobile homes and other debris following Hurricane Irma.

Rubio was instrumental in securing the federal USDA funds to help with canal cleanup in the Keys — a project that began in mid-August of 2018, and that is going exceedingly well — under budget and ahead of schedule.

Keys officials are set to ask for an extension on the $45.2 million grant. With 83 percent of the canals cleaned, and about $30 million in funds remaining, the county is leading the effort to refocus on dredging, or what it calls sediment removal.

“We’re not asking for additional money,” said Rhonda Haag, the county’s director of Sustainability and Projects.

“We want them to reconsider some of the canals and sediment removal projects they had previously rejected.

And we’re going to ask for a two-month extension at the local level” of the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) grant, managed by the USDA. Haag said if the sediment removal projects are ultimately approved, there will likely be another extension request that would have to be approved in Washington, D.C. The county began submitting requests for sediment removal under the same grant five months ago. While Islamorada had some debris in the canals, the worst problems in the village boundaries were associated with sand-choked canals making navigation possible only for very shallow draft boats.

Haag said the county submitted a list of 34 canals to be dredged to the USDA. That has already been knocked down to 10 canals, still under review. The sedimentclogged canals have been identified in Big Pine Key (5), Marathon (3), and Islamorada (2).

“We don’t understand,” County Administrator Roman Gastesi told Rubio. “The money is there. There are some canals in Islamorada that you can walk across.”

She said only two canals in Islamorada have been approved for sediment removal, and the USDA has only agreed to clean part of the waterway.

“The funds remaining should be spent in Islamorada.

We were supposed to get $6 million of the overall grant, and so far only $2 million has been expended in Islamorada,” Gillis said.

Haag said the NCRS local managers are only approving sediment removal where deposits are highest, and that portion of the canal varies by location.

“First, we are very thankful to NRCS for the grant and the service. It’s very good,” Haag said. “But this particular issue seems to be a matter of interpretation of the guidelines.” Haag said the same grant was used to clear entire canals — not just portions — 20 years ago after Hurricane Georges. “The strict interpretation could be happening at the local level; we’re not really sure what’s going on. We seek to restore the canals to their pre-Irma condition.”

The county is administering the canal cleanup and sediment removal on behalf of its constituents and those residing in municipalities. The bulk of the grant originates with the USDA, and 25 percent matching funds are paid out of state Stewardship Act funds.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead the cleanup. Working with Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island, the workforce numbers about 60 people using grapple trucks, sonar boats and barges.

Wood Environment is monitoring the work.

There are two methods of sediment removal — hydraulic (pumping) and mechanical (an excavator on a barge). Haag said only the hydraulic method is allowed in unincorporated Monroe County and is the most expensive.

“If we get approval, and the mechanical method was better to deal with the type of sediment in the canal, I would have to ask the county for a waiver,” she said.

The Monroe County BOCC voted not to move forward with proposed Goal 109, the Hurricane Irma Workforce Housing Recovery Policy, at a special meeting in Marathon on Feb. 12.

Goal 109 was a series of proposed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan that would have incentivized workforce housing projects in unincorporated Monroe County for two years to help with housing recovery from Hurricane Irma.

Citizen turnout was high to learn about the proposal that would have increased density per buildable acre for workforce housing projects. It also included language to expedite the planning process by changing time frames for public noticed meetings.

Commissioner Michelle Coldiron made the motion to eliminate Goal 109 in its entirety, with Mayor Sylvia Murphy seconding. The BOCC stated it is not opposed to workforce housing, and will look at new projects that come forward on a case-by-case basis.

n 1770, Joshua Appelby was born in Newport, R.I. By January of 1822 he was the captain of the schooner Fame and recorded as being at Cape Florida.

In July of 1822, John Wesley Fiveash accompanied his wrecked cargo aboard the schooner Midas from Cape Florida to Norfolk, Va. Fiveash would sail back to the Florida Keys where he and Appelby established the community of Port Monroe at Key Vaca.

On Feb. 10, 1823 Appelby and Fiveash placed a “Notice to Mariners” in the Pensacola newspaper The Floridian announcing Port Monroe “…has the advantages of a large and spacious harbor and the proprietors are furnished with experienced pilots, good vessels, boats, and provisions of all kinds to relieve those who may be so unfortunate as to get on the Florida Reef. We are determined that nothing on our part (that attention and industry will ensure) will be neglected for the immediate relief of the unfortunate stranger… At present there are four families residing at this place; corn, potatoes, beans, onions, cotton, and all the West Indies fruit thrives rapidly and surpass our most sanguine expectations.”

Earlier this month, attorney Richard August Malafy received a Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award in the chambers of the Supreme Court of Florida in Tallahassee. Malafy, pictured here with his wife Cristina, was one of 21 recipients in 2019 — one from each circuit court and an out-of-state nominee. IT’S A SHORT TRIP TO THE CLINK Marathon jail reopens

O

n, Monday, Feb. 18, the Marathon jail operated by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will

reopen.

“The closure of the Marathon jail was a result of staffing issues post-Hurricane Irma,” Sheriff Rick Ramsay said. “The building itself was not significantly damaged by the storm. The challenge was getting the proper number of people to staff the facility safely, which was and always will be my priority.”

In the 17.5 months the jail has been closed, those arrested have been transported to the facility on Stock Island. Ramsay credited Marathon’s Capt. Don Hiller, Lt. Derek Paul and their crew as well as the transportation staff that kept the wheels of justice turning.

“Sometimes we had to drive suspects to the Key West facility and other times transportation staff had to drive to us, but we made it work,” said Hiller.

“It was tough, but I can’t say enough about this team. They worked longer hours, took less breaks and did it without complaining. Opening the jail back up is a welcome reminder that things are returning to normal again.”

Earlier this month, the Marathon jail had a test-run as inmates at the Planation Key jail were transferred to the Middle Keys while the Upper Keys location underwent repairs. They have since been returned to the Upper Keys.

The Marathon jail’s maximum occupancy is 60, while Plantation Key can hold 56 and the Stock Island facility can fit 604 inmates.

T

hey’ve been together since they were 15 years old. She remembers the moment exactly — it was at an away football game on Nov. 12, 1976.

“You remember all that?” asked Anthony Culver of his wife, Diane. She just smiled at him, presumably the same smile she gave him all those years ago that stopped him in his tracks.

Both Diane and Anthony are Marathon natives. They were married in 1983 at the Kirk of the Keys church, honeymooned on Marco Island, and raised a daughter and a son in the Middle Keys.

But they are known to generations of locals — largely through their work with the Marathon Rec Center on 33rd Street. It’s an after-school and summer program, for kids in elementary school and middle school, that Anthony has been running for 27 years. She had a career in banking before joining him at the facility on 33rd Street. For both, the job is actually a mission.

“For us it was always best friends first. We made sure to spend a lot of time together. And we have the same interests,” said Diane.

“We keep busy — volunteering, coaching, mentoring,” Diane said. “But we always made time for each other.

Growing up in Marathon, and raising kids here, with limited resources is hard. But we always did one vacation a year with our kids, and one week by ourselves.”

And, really, their interests are dovetailed — they love ALL the sports.

Football, basketball, softball, baseball.

“I always wanted to play tennis,” Anthony said, wistfully.

“When do you have time for that?” asked Diane, and then laughed. “We’re too busy playing kickball with the kids.”

It’s a match of faith and shared connections.

“She’s just my best friend. She’s someone I can count on, trust, and talk to,” Anthony said. “And we have the same interests. It’s not like she was going one way and I was going the other.”

hese 30-somethings had a rocky start.

“The first time I was introduced to him he was making Key lime pies in the Sunset Grille kitchen. He took out one ear bud, kind of gave me a head nod, and went back to work,” Julia said.

“When I’m working I am very focused,” Lukasz said, defending himself, in English with just a hint of his native Polish accent.

That was years ago. She moved home (Arizona) for a while, then moved back to Marathon. By then, both were single. They hung out in the same group, but it was Julia who made the first move.

“I told him, ‘I always thought you were kind of cute!’” Julia said, laughing at the retelling at the bar at Sunset Grille where they both work. He’s the kitchen manager; she’s a server manager.

They come from such different worlds — he studied banking vocationally before coming to the U.S. as an exchange student.

He chucked that career for a chef’s hat. She got her degree in art history but an internship revealed she wasn’t all that interested; so she took a “breather” in the Keys, working for a restaurant.

And love finds a way.

He proposed in Prague … but that maneuver, too, was fraught with difficulties. Leaving the U.S., the TSA agent was very thorough and seemingly deaf to Lukasz’ whispered pleas to conceal the engagement ring hidden in a shoe in his backpack. Still, Julia didn’t notice.

The “big day” was further marred by a hangover, rain and — this is key — the long line at the famous caricature artist’s booth on the more famous Charles Bridge. Lucasz finally deposited Julia at a nearby restaurant, and went back to confer with the artist. Then he returned to the restaurant to recover his wouldbe, reluctant fiancée and take her back to the artist.

“I just wanted to go back to the hotel,” she said. “Everyone around us was acting weird and I didn’t even want to look at the picture when it was finished. My friend had to unroll it to show me it was a picture of Lukasz and I, and he was holding a giant ring.”

“When she turned around,” Lukasz said, “I was already down on one knee.”

The two, married in 2017, travel to Europe every year to visit new places, and reconnect with his family. But there’s less of that, and more planning for the future now. Maybe a home?

Maybe some babies?

“We have a great life. We have the same work, the same schedule, the same everything,” he said.

ee one Grouten and you’re likely to see two. John and Sandy Grouten are 20-year residents of Marathon, and very active members of the community. The former banker and former librarian have been married for 57 years.

“Her house was right next to the bank where I worked in Farmington, Connecticut,” John said. “And I would see her out hanging the clothes on the line to dry.”

“And, apparently, I made a lot of time to do that,” said Sandy, laughing.

Eventually, he called her up and invited her to dinner and a show.

He remembers the name of the restaurant. She remembers not having a good reason to say no!

They visited the Keys for years, eventually investing in a timeshare on Knights Key. Then, around 2000, they bought a home on the same island.

In Connecticut, they were involved in the “Community Chest” — a precursor to the current United Way — and Little League.

“I had two younger brothers that I coached for a couple of years,” John said. “And there’s a ball field named after me now. It’s a nice one, lights and everything.”

The couple doesn’t have children, but consider themselves family to a multitude, starting with nieces and nephews and extending to youngsters they met in Marathon many years ago.

“I would go over to the 7 Mile Grill to eat and there was always this little kid there, about 3 years old. His mother was a waitress,” John recalls. “That little boy was James Simcic.” John and James maintain a strong connection to this day.

That fortuitous meeting was just the beginning of the couple’s involvement in the Florida Keys. Again, this entails Little League and also a huge friendship with the late J.C. Wells, who took them fishing often.

But John is also involved in the leadership of the Marathon Community United Methodist Church. They love to listen to Howard Livingston and admire his friend-not-fan club, the Castaways, and have consequently helped the musician raise funds for the KOA Care Camps by purchasing the outboard Mercury-made “rumritas.” Sandy is currently enrolled in the Monroe County Sheriff’s Citizen Police Academy.

“I listen to the dispatch radio all the time,” Sandy said.

“She has more than one radio,” John confided.

The secret to their success, they said, is rolling with the punches and perseverance. Both agree that divorce is too easy and the equivalent of “giving up.”

ver scrubbed gravel? Sifted through cow patties with a fork? Welcome to the life of Miles, a young wannabe playwright in “The Drawer Boy” — Marathon Community Theatre’s newest reading.

“The Drawer Boy” chronicles the experiences of Miles (Krystal King), a young actor from a Toronto theatre group, as she attempts to immerse herself in farm life in order to “research” a new play she wishes to write. Morgan (George Lancaster) and Angus (Marty Dillis), her comical bachelor hosts, have achieved a manageable balance in their life as Morgan helps Angus cope with his brain damage and memory loss suffered during the Second World War. At first, Miles seems content to perform the many comically unnecessary tasks given to her in jest by the two older gentlemen. However, she can’t help but come to care for both of them, and she eventually questions the many stories told to Angus by Morgan in an effort to reconstruct a memory of his “past life.” The more she questions, the more Angus’ own memories unexpectedly begin to surface, and the resolution of Morgan and Angus’ versions of their past will, in director Mike Wagner’s words, “rip your heart out.”

Audiences for “The Drawer Boy” will be sure to leave with plenty of laughs at the antics of Morgan and Angus and the endless string of nonsensical tasks they create for Miles. However, the show quickly dives into deeper explorations of friendship and the power of storytelling in creating and interpreting reality. The result, said Wagner, is so meaningful that it led him to direct this performance nearly 13 years after seeing the play for the first time.

“It just stuck with us. It’s a touching story, and these guys have brought it to life. It’s been a wonderful journey for all of us.”

BRIEFLY Airport to be site of disaster drill

The Florida Keys Marathon International Airport will be conducting its full-scale Disaster Drill on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 9 a.m. at the west end the airport’s runway near Aviation Boulevard. The training should last about three hours. Residents and visitors should be advised that there will be staged fires on the airfield, along with a high volume of emergency response vehicles in the area. The exercise is required by the Federal Aviation Administration and takes place once every three years at the airport.

The disaster drill will include airport staff, Marathon Fire Rescue, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Fire Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, and numerous other local and federal partners to prepare for any future airport emergencies.

Nature Walks at Crane Point Hammock During the winter months, Larry Benvenuti and Neil Schoenfield lead a Nature Walk every Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Crane Point Hammock Museum in Marathon.

The public is invited to attend.

Moose puts on rummage sale The Marathon Moose Lodge is scheduling a rummage sale and craft fair on Saturday, March 30, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the lodge, at 11601 1st Ave. Gulf.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education is getting to know the skills I need to succeed in a learning environment and the real world.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The dumbest rule at my school would have to be the no-hoodies rule. I understand that it was made for the safety purposes, but it is still just a piece of clothing. The best rule would probably be the “See it, hear it, take it” rule. Although it can get annoying to have to continuously put your phone away or have it taken, having it out of reach makes it less distracting and can help you focus more on the work at hand.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? I’m still a freshman but I guess I’m realizing now that the amount of effort I put in does make a difference in the way I learn and how much I get out of it.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I have been in Take Stock In Children for about a year now. This program is important to me because of the amount of opportunities it is giving me. I have a wonderful mentor who is helping me to succeed and now I am getting done more because I have a goal to reach.

What are your plans after high school? My biggest goal at the moment is to get into the University of Florida.

‘EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED’ MGS’ Konrath adapts but stays old school

T

he average American throws away 4.3 pounds of garbage a day (minus what we recycle – about a third, on average, in the U.S.). Residents of the U.S. just take it for granted — provided we wheel our garbage cans to the road — “someone” will come and get ’em. In Marathon, that’s Marathon Garbage Service, run by the Konrath family for four generations, since 1948.

Greg Konrath is president of the company founded by his grandfather. He’s father to three outstanding children (Taylor, Sydney and Parker) and an amazing wife, Teresa, who is the athletic director at the Marathon High School.

The Weekly sat down to catch up with Greg.

Full name, nickname? Ronald Gregory Konrath. I go by Greg.

Were you born and raised in Marathon? Well, born in Homestead, but raised in Marathon.

What’s something the public doesn’t understand about the garbage service? Why we start so early. The answer is geography.

Marathon has mostly dead ends off Overseas Highway, which makes collection difficult. We want to be out there early before the school buses, before traffic, and then there’s the heat factor. So, we start early and usually finish by 1 p.m.

What’s something the public doesn’t understand about recycling? I think there’s a perception that anything can be recycled, and that’s not true. There are different rules in every area.

Also, recycling is a market and prices fluctuate. I only get paid to deliver the recyclables.

How do you feel about coconut trees? They make terrible mulch. It’s not the nice, clumpy stuff like Christmas trees — it’s stringy.

How many trucks does Marathon Garbage Service operate? Altogether, it’s about 20 and that also includes our regular trucks, the clam-shell truck, recycling truck, and roll-off trucks for delivering Dumpsters.

How many employees? We have 40 employees.

How has the garbage service changed over the years, since Marathon Garbage Service was founded?

Everything has changed. How we do business is informed by rules and regulations, and the population in the Keys has changed entirely, too. We have snowbirds on the one hand, and people living paycheck to paycheck on the other. Back in the day, I could drive around Duck Key and only have a few houses to service in the dead of summer. Now, with vacation rentals, that has all changed.

What’s something your dad, Ron, taught you about business? Be a man of your word. If you say you are going to do something, then you do it.

I’m still old school.

What’s something you are teaching your daughters and son about business? Everybody deserves one chance; they deserve the benefit of the doubt until they prove differently.

Did Hurricane Irma affect your business? There was a lot of damage to the Dumpsters exposed to rising seawater, or the ones that filled with water. There’s a lot of rust. Right now I have two full-time welders working on repairs.

If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do? I would probably hang out in City Hall and see what Chuck Lindsey is really up to. I heard he has a Hello Kitty Lego collection hidden under his desk.

If you could have another career, what would it be? When I was graduating high school, I thought I was going to become an architect. But my father explained that if I went off to school, I was going to be working for my brother and I couldn’t have that.

What’s your favorite event in Marathon? The Seafood Festival. I love the way the town comes together to put on a major event for everyone else to enjoy.

How do you spend your free time? Well, my son and I are going to see the ACC Championships in Charlotte pretty soon.

You began working in the family business when you were still in high school. What kind of a toll does jumping on and off a garbage truck take on your body? I’ve had surgeries to my right shoulder and left knee — that comes from hauling myself into the truck and jumping out.

What is Marathon Garbage Service’s role in the community? We coordinate with a wide variety of nonprofits by donating garbage service for what seems like every major event — the Marathon Seafood Festival, Pigeon Key Art Festival, Celtic Festival, 7 Mile Bridge Run, etc.

ropping enrollment numbers have Island Christian School’s viability in jeopardy, but a last-minute effort is underway to keep the facility open and running past the 2018-19 school year.

Senior Pastor Trevor Mann issued and read a letter to the Island Community Church congregation during a recent service regarding the reality facing the school, namely the financial challenges from the 2008 recession and Hurricane Irma to changing demographics in the Keys. The real estate trend and families picking up and leaving were other factors noted.

“I think the school is open to suggestions and input on how to keep the school open. They’ve run all the scenarios they can on their end,” said Jessica Vandervoort of Marathon.

Her son in eighth grade has attended Island Christian School all but three years, when he was home schooled.

Vandervoort said she and her husband chose ICS because of the quality of their instruction, as opposed to a focus on testing. “Also, we wanted him to have a Christ-centered education,” she said.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, there will be a meeting at the Family Life Center gymnasium for parents and the

community to come up with ideas and suggestions on how to keep the school open and going. Carrie Tudor, who sends two kids to ICS, told the Weekly that everyone is encouraged to attend.

“We love this school and we don’t want to see it end,” she said.

Today, 107 students are enrolled at ICS. If the school enrolls 145 fullpaying students in grades kindergarten to 12th, receives donations of at least $400,000 or gets a substantial combination of the two, ICS will continue through the next school year. However, those target goals need to be met

by March 1 or else the school will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

“We would much rather have students than donations,” Mann told the Weekly. “One, we are here to share the love of Jesus with students while giving them a great education. Two, money will only buy us another year.

While we would use the next school year to increase enrollment, we don't want people to be misled about their investment. We would be looking at the same problem next year if enrollment doesn't increase.”

Mann said church elders and the financial advisory board have met since last summer over possible options to keep the school open, including a pre-K to sixth-grade model. Mann said there was no sustainable pre-K to 12th grade models with fewer than 145 students.

Terri White, head of ICS, told the Weekly she issued a letter informing parents that the school will continue to educate students through the end of the school year. She says she wants everyone to stay unified through the challenging time.

“We’re not giving up on our children,” White said. “My letter was to tell parents we are staying committed to the end and they can count on us to provide a quality education.”

ICS has served the community since 1974. Like Mann, White said the economy is playing a major factor in enrollment numbers not only at ICS, but other schools as well.

Former students and ICS parents took to social media to share their responses to the news. Milly Mamorsh, whose son went to ICS, said she would never have enough words to thank Island Christian for her son’s education.

Amy Rosasco has been an Island Christian School parent for 13 years. Her daughter graduated from the school and now attends Florida State University. Her two sons are currently enrolled in fourth and seventh grades.

“The kids learn Christian values and talk about God openly,” she said. “So, we’re very saddened by this news and praying for a miracle.” Rosasco said the school has lost teachers and students since Hurricane Irma. “I’m not surprised by this news, but we are very concerned.”

“The school went through so much before I came,” Mann said.

“My first year, we were getting our curriculum online and teachers working together. We had so many things cause disruption, especially with Irma. This year, the quality of our education was up but enrollment down based on everything happening through the years and Irma.”

Mann said they’re thankful for the parents, students, staff and community for making Island Christian School the pillar that it is. He said the school has received countless encouraging messages and phone calls from former staff, students, parents and others who lives were positively changed by ICS.

Everyone is invited to join free, guided nature excursions designed for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.In an effort to keep everyone together, the centralized meeting point will be at the National Key Deer Refuge Visitor's Center, located in the Winn Dixie shopping plaza on Big Pine Key.All Wild Wednesday events are free and family-friendly.

Participants are encouraged to bring a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, water, binoculars, and dress appropriately for the weather.

Marathon Shriners Conduct Charity Drive The Marathon Shrine Club is conducting its annual “Paper Drive” on Saturday, Feb. 16. (Due to Hurricane Irma, the paper drive did not occur in 2018).

Collection centers will be located at Publix and on U.S. 1 between 107 and 109 Streets in Marathon from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Collections go directly to the Shrine Children’s Hospitals and the transportation fund that arranges children’s transportation to the hospital at no cost to the families.Look for the volunteers with the donation buckets wearing red fez hats.

ark Matthis from Island Service explains: Nowadays nothing connected with oil is simply thrown out. It’s the same in the restaurant business.

All used oils get stored and picked up and none of the bad stuff goes into the ground any more.

It benefits the environment and lessens the likelihood of used oil being dumped into nature.

Just one gallon of motor oil in waterways could pollute one million gallons of water.

When the oil comes out of the cars we service, it’s drained into the bucket and gets moved into the portable oil carrier, which is then wheeled outside and stored in the tank.

EMC Oil Corporation comes with a big truck and picks it up when the tank is full.

It costs us 25 cents per gallon to haul the used motor oil away.

Waste motor oil can be distilled into diesel fuel or marine fuel in a process that is similar to oil re-refining. The re-refining process means that used oil is restored to new oil by

removing chemical impurities, dirt and heavy metals. The lubrication properties persist and oil can actually be recycled indefinitely but in the final step of this complicated process additives are blended in to achieve the right detergent and anti-friction qualities of the oil.

EMC used to sell it to the sugar cane refineries and asphalt companies. The latter used it for heating up the asphalt. Now both of these industries use natural gas instead.

If you change your own oil from your truck, boat, lawnmower, make sure that you take it to a collection center for recycling. Marathon’s Advanced Auto Parts accepts used motor oil as long as it doesn’t contain gas.

DIGITAL AUDIO AND THE IPOD Don’t get me started on vinyl‌

B

ack in 2007, I bought my first iPod. For quite a while, I wasn’t convinced that the data compression scheme used to minimize the size of digital audio files resulted in good sound. I was a CD-only snob — more about that later. Since then, I’ve bought several more iPods — mostly iPod Nanos, an iPod Classic with loads of memory, and an iPod Touch (think small iPhone that does everything but make phone calls).

It’s good to have a huge library of music on a device that fits into a pocket. (I also keep a lot of music on my iPhone.)

Let me explain what I mean by “CD-only snobbery.� I’ve been into recording and digital audio professionally since, well, before there was good sounding (and affordable) digital audio. My first multi-track and mix-down machines were analog reel-to-reel, and my first professional digital recorder was a DAT (Digital Audio Tape) machine I bought back in 1991.

I was an early convert to CDs, however. It was pure ear candy – no more record scratches, pops, and low-frequency needle rumble, and no more lo-fi pathetic cassette tape hiss.

Even though the record labels put out their share of bad-sounding CDs from questionable masters, the good ones were really good. And when the CD Walkman came out, well, I was hooked.

It was portable audio that actually sounded halfway decent.

Somewhere along the line, other recordable consumer digital formats emerged. If you remember the MiniDisc and DCC (Digital Compact Cassette) formats, give yourself extra credit. They attempted to be convenient, portable, and recordable, but they used lossy data compression algorithms that did affect the sound quality. The early algorithms sounded bad, but they, to quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail, â€œâ€Śgot better.â€?

So as professional digital audio went from 16- to 24-bit resolution, consumer digital audio professed to be “CD-quality� at 4 or 5 actual bits after compression. Then everyone and his brother started downloading and trading (and stealing) MP3s, many of which sounded as if someone had encoded (or ripped) them into their computer using a telephone receiver. No way, I thought to myself. As long as I have CDs, I’ll use all 16 bits, thank you. So everywhere I went, I’d have to bring along all the CDs I wanted to hear.

It was a small price to pay for good sound quality.

And don’t get me started on vinyl.

Yes, it sounded great in the 1960s and 70s. But that’s because it was competing against cassettes (ugh) and 8-tracks (barf). It’s not an understatement to say that Apple revolutionized consumer audio with iTunes and the iPod. I hadn’t really bothered to listen to data-compressed audio since hearing pathetic-sounding MP3s, so I didn’t realize how good Apple’s AAC High Quality encoding algorithm was. Or just how easy iTunes is to use. It only takes a few minutes to encode an entire CD, then iTunes will make sure the track names and CD cover artwork are included with the album files.

I still buy the CDs that I’ll put into my iPods and iPhones as opposed to simply downloading the compressed files from iTunes. I want to at least start with all 16 bits (as well as a physical disc album to hold and a booklet to read).

Apple truly has revolutionized the way we look at computers, and brought them into practically every aspect of our existence through their integration with our phones, tablets, and other devices. Believe it or not, all the songs from all my CDs have been available for sale on iTunes for years.

he third annual City of Marathon Flag Retirement Ceremony was held on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Oceanfront Park behind City Hall. Put on by Cub Scout Pack 901, the ceremony honored Old Glory’s contributions and service as worn and unserviceable flags were respectfully burned. Coast Guard Station Marathon provided the color guard from its active duty members.

DOLPHINS HEAD TO DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP T

he Marathon boys basketball team was on the road last week, traveling to Key West on Feb. 6, where they made fritters out of the Conchs with a score of 85-73. This was the first road victory for the Dolphins in Key West in 25 years.

“It was a total team effort,” said Coach Kevin Freeman. “The role players stepped up and made big play after big play.

We found ourselves down 20 in the first half but continued to battle back and finally took the lead in the fourth quarter and didn’t look back!” The Dolphins were on the road Feb. 8 to play Gulliver Prep; Marathon lost that game to the Raiders 91-83. Then they were on the road again Feb. 11, where they beat Palm Glades Prep in the district championship semifinals. Down by 6 with a minute on the clock, the Fins battled back to win 80-76.

Chamber music coming to town M Concerts set in Marathon, Islamorada

usicians from Amsterdam will perform chamber music concerts in Marathon on Monday, Feb. 18, and Islamorada on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Formed by members of Amsterdam’s famed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO), Camerata RCO performs chamber music in multiple formations from duet to small chamber orchestra, with a special focus on the Classical, and Romantic repertoire for winds and strings.

The Marathon concert is at the Marathon High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The Islamorada concert is at the Island Community church, also at 7:30 p.m.

Praised by the New York Times for their “warm, glowing performance,” the ensemble has enjoyed success in the Netherlands and abroad, performing 50 concerts a season internationally including Amsterdam, Vienna, Tokyo, Seoul, Madrid and New York.

The group will perform selections from Antonin Dvorak and Franz Schubert.

SATURDAY, MARCH 2 From Sombrero Beach, Marathon Mark your calendars for the 13th annual Sombrero Beach Run on Saturday, March 2. ooking out the back door of the marina office, observing the new dock construction in an effort to rebuild after Hurricane Irma, Lynn Papp said, “It has been a long 18 months getting to this point.”

Lynn, along with her husband Tony, and her mother, Sylvia Miles, purchased Sea Bird Marina, a small family operation nestled on the bay side of Long Key, MM 69, in 2001.

“We were living in South America, in Ecuador, and decided to move back to the United States. My mom was living on her sailboat in Marathon, and we all knew we wanted a small business we could run together. Tony and I had a dream of owning a marina and Mom said she wanted to help with whatever we decided to do. When this marina came up for sale, we came to look at it and it felt like home. We knew this was it,” Lynn said.

Tony and Lynn’s two sons, Tony and Michael, also help with the daily operations; preparing to take the reins one day and making the management of Sea Bird Marina three-generations strong. “Michael has always wanted to

work here and run the office; after Hurricane Irma, Tony decided it was time to come back home. He realized how important this marina is to our family and he wants to be part of its future,” they said of their sons.

“Now both boys will do it together.”

The future of Sea Bird Marina is under development and will add 20 new wet slips in a protected basin to the Middle Keys. ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier began construction on Jan. 21 and aims to have the docks completed in late March.

Sea Bird Marina owns the only boat launch on Long Key, and offers boat and trailer storage in addition to boat rentals. Currently the marina has liveaboard slips in its eastern basin.

“We try to use local businesses to do all our work in the marina. We try to use the resources the Keys have to offer; even our bait and tackle (are locally sourced). We try to use as many local vendors as possible,” Lynn said, in regard to choosing ASAP Marine Contractors for the project.

Looking forward to what is going to be updated in the marina, she said, “When September gets here we are going to remodel the bathrooms, showers and the office floor. We would like more liveaboards and we know some more updates need to be made. The hurricane slowed us down.

“Our niche is our location for fishing. Our disadvantage is that we aren’t closer to Islamorada or Marathon, but our biggest advantage is that we have good fishing,” Lynn said. Sylvia agreed, “It makes a big difference for cruisers when they can walk to town, but this area is better fishing than the whole Keys.”

Always willing to share their knowledge of great fishing spots, Lynn gestured to the chart on the wall as she said, “We have easy access to the ocean, the gulf, the intracoastal waterway is right here, and the tall bridge. This is the last bridge sailboats can get under to come inside until they get to Marathon.”

“Alligator Reef Lighthouse is great for snorkeling, free diving; and over here the fishing is unbelievable,” she said, pointing at various locations on the chart.

Lynn concluded, “Our biggest challenge at the moment is getting the word out there that we exist. Being small, we get overlooked. When our new docks get done we are ready for an increased pace; more traffic, more people. We are ready for it.”

lthough our restaurant is officially named ‘Marathon Grill and Ale House,’ the locals call it THE Ale House,� said Simone Mullis, putting stress on the word “the.�

Michael Payne and Mullis have owned the restaurant for five years and swear that the chicken pot pie and open-faced roast beef are regarded as soul food by locals. The latter is served with mashed potatoes and corn, and both of them are big lunch favorites.

The appetizers include conch fritters, which are fried crispy and loaded with conch, peppers and onions. Baja scallops are seared and served with orange mango sauce and balsamic glaze. Or try the Bimini Fish Dip and ahi tuna.

There are several soups and salads available, but don’t miss the onion soup. Guests claim the Ale House French onion soup is better than you’ll find in France. And always check for the chef’s specials on the last page of the menu.

The bar has more than 100 beers, 30 of them on the tap.

The happy hour specials (BOGO entrees) have proved so popular, that the owners had to put a sign on the door asking customers to be seated by 5:45 p.m. to order from the Early Bird Menu. The well drinks are $2.50 and a glass of wine is $3 during happy hour.

Oh, and the Ale House has its own blueberry and Oreo Key lime pies. “It may sound a little different but wait until you try them,� said Simon, and she is right. They taste rich and comforting — a perfect dessert to pair up with Tropical Coconut Shrimp or a crab cake dinner.

The restaurant is open until late and is known for its allAmerican menu. Guests can order online as well; the kitchen closes at midnight.

And stay tuned, because the owners will be announcing the re-opening of Dockside on Boot Key Harbor soon.
