The “Duval Crawl” will soon be down the middle of the street.

T

he City of Key West recently approved a pilot program to create a pedestrian mall along the 500 – 700 blocks of Duval Street from Feb. 15 to April 27. The program is geared to encourage stronger pedestrian traffic along the heart of Duval. This week local activist and author Mike Mongo proposed a question on his Facebook page, asking locals what activities and festivities should accompany the pedestrian mall.

CITY TRIES TECH TOOL TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION

he future is here. Following the direction of other municipalities, the city of Key West is pursuing implementing an online forum that aims to “increase citizen participation in the democratic process.” The city already posts videos of the commission meetings, now with subtitles for deaf and hearing-impaired citizens. This service was briefly halted after a lawsuit demanding compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, but it is now in action.

The online tool proposed would be via a service called eComment,

powered by Granicus Inc., a company that provides technologies to government staffs across the country, boasting efficiency and transparency. The tool would allow citizens to comment on agenda items in advance of the meetings. It would also allow people to submit comments during the meeting, while it is streaming live on the website.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of eComment is that citizens can submit ideas related to a particular item that would be routed to the correct city staff member or elected official. Michael Ashford, VP of marketing and strategic partnerships for Granicus, said “By providing an electronic way for citizens to speak at a public meeting, the city will be able to reach a broader segment of their community and hear feedback from more people.”

Mayor Teri Johnston said it would “especially benefit young families” that may be too busy in daily life to attend government meetings.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editors:

In a recent article that ran in another publication, two cosmetic store owners profess complete innocence to ripping off customers, apparently with a straight face.

Maor Illouz protests vigorously that his stores at 119 Duval and 211 Duval, have never done anything wrong. “When the Rip Off Team picketed my shop for a day or two,” he is quoted as saying, “I had no idea why they were here …There had not been a complaint against my store.”

A simple fact-check proved otherwise. Documentation provided by Key West’s Code Compliance Department reveals that in the last three years the two stores have been cited 17 times for code compliance issues, consumer complaints, or Better Business Bureau complaints.

Then there’s Daniel Layliev. You remember him: He’s the helpful store owner who escorted one of his customers to her hotel room with $3,010 worth of skin care products. (You could probably buy better quality merchandise for a hundred bucks at K-mart.)

“We’re very law-abiding citizens,” Layliev claims. However, Code Compliance records state that 120 Duval Street has been cited for eight violations that include code issues, consumer complaints, and a Better Business Bureau complaint.

These two proprietors are not alone in claiming their stores are innocents in all this.

At city meetings, cosmetics store owners and workers take the podium one after another claiming their store has never had a complaint.

But, once again, a quick fact-check reveals otherwise. Over the same three-year period, the City of Key West’s Code Compliance department recorded a total of 82 violations and complaints for the various cosmetics stores operating in range of wide-eyed cruise ship passengers. (Note that this tally doesn’t include complaints that are not formally recorded.

Many ripoff victims just say “the hell with it” and give up.)

For comparison, I randomly selected a spa that sells cosmetics items at the other end of Duval Street to analyze.

Surprise, surprise: No complaints of any kind!

Here are the facts: Every cosmetic store operating on lower Duval or Front Street that I am aware of has been cited for violations and/or received consumer complaints. Every single one!

Many of the store owners use the same tricks to deflect public scrutiny and stay one step ahead of enforcement.

It’s a dizzying shell game in which they change the name of the store; claim someone else owned the store when the problems occurred; claim the swindled customer was manipulated by the police; or claim the charges are untrue or rooted in bias. They might as well just claim that the dog ate their homework.

Don’t believe their claims! Whenever a store owner pleads innocence, remember: Facts matter!

ayor Teri Johnston has asked the entire city commission to sponsor the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, which will come before the city commission on Wednesday, Feb. 20. This unanimous co-sponsorship would move the plan into the hands of the budget committee and city staff for implementation.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan is just what it sounds like: a multi-faceted, multiyear, overarching assessment and action plan for bicycle and pedestrian traffic in Key West and Stock Island. The effort has been a collaboration among the city, business owners and a consultant team.They surveyed residents online and via comment boards to create a plan corresponding to the feedback.

Broadly, the plan encompasses three phases, unfolding over the next 10-plus years, to address traffic safety and congestion issues.

This will address “multi-modal” transportation, defined as “transit, air, boat, bicycles, and pedestrianism.”

It also is a clear effort on the city’s part to lower our carbon footprint. The plan proposes “a practical vision of a safe, connected and comfortable network to serve residents, workers and tourists alike. Implementation of the Plan recommendations will result in a solid foundation upon which Key West can continue building the premier biking- and walking-friendly city in Florida.”

It’s also overdue. As the plan states, “For more than a decade, the City of Key West has ranked first out of 97 Florida communities with a population between 15,000 and 75,000 in bicycle injuries and fatalities, and wavers between third and 12th place for pedestrian injuries and fatalities.” Key West is also third in the nation for bike commuting to work, at 15 percent of the population. The plan posits that the combination of high bike commuting and congestion, a dense road network, and unfamiliar drivers (in the winter, 60 percent to 80 percent of motorists are from out of town) causes the high accident statistics. The need for a change is clear.

Enter Alison Higgins, sustainability coordinator for the city, who has been an integral part of the plan and will be key in implementing it.

“We’ve looked at what’s in the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan that we can start rolling with. What’s short-, medium- and long-term — what can we do first?” (See Box). Higgins also explained the genesis of the plan that will be up for a vote. “We’ve looked at what different municipalities are doing that are best practices. … In the plan, they’ve looked at past accident data, highest-interaction intersections around town, and we’re looking at what to do at each one.”

Perhaps the most elemental tenet of the plan is to connect existing bike pathways. The city will also be evaluating how to restructure problematic intersections, addressing new intersections in each phase of the plan. That may mean re-routing existing bike paths, lowering curbs, adding crossing lights, etc. While evaluating bike paths, they are also looking at motor safety. “If you make it easier for bicycles and pedestrians to be safe,” said Higgins, “you actually make it safer for cars.” One of the first locations they are evaluating is the intersection at the Wicker Sports complex, where Kennedy and Duck Avenue meet.

They also are introducing “fix it” stations and bike lockers at key locations, for instance,

at a bus station, where workers from up the Keys might want to leave a bike to hop on after their bus commute. In fact, Higgins was one of those commuters several years back, and she saw the need for secure bike storage.

All of these action points are based on community feedback. The plan has distilled the survey responses and community feedback into goals falling under three categories: access and mobility, safety and comfort, and sustainability and stewardship. Higgins is optimistic about the results of the first phase of the plan, and she will be presenting to the commission at the Feb. 20 meeting.

FDOT WORKING ON BOULEVARD CROSSWALKS

T

he Florida Department of Transportation did say 2019, and, well, officials are making good on that.

Since North Roosevelt Boulevard’s completed renovation in 2014, pedestrian crosswalks have been a lingering thorn. Recurring traffic accidents began to pile up, so to speak, and there have been at least three fatalities near the designated crosswalks.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 25, installation will start of five HAWKs (High-Intensity Activated CrossWalk Beacons) at mid-block crossings along North Roosevelt Boulevard near the 24 North Hotel, the Capital Bank and the Key Plaza Shopping Center, between 7th Street and Hilton Haven Road and just west of 3rd Street. These will now become signalized intersections, where pedestrians will activate lights to cross, alerting oncoming cars to stop. According to FDOT, the project will also include upgrading pedestrian signing, street lighting, and pavement markings, as well as repaving and re-striping isolated sections of the road along the project’s corridor.

“We realize there are many issues, like transient drivers not familiar with the road and confusing signage,” said Paulette Summers, community outreach specialist with FDOT. “We know a 6-year-old boy was almost hit last week.” FDOT officials have been to the areas several times and as Summers said, “walked the walk.” Since 2017, this has been an ongoing conversation

with the city and Summers credits the City Commission for fasttracking it. FDOT also held a public meeting Feb. 12 to brief citizens on the HAWKS. However, upgrading the Boulevard won’t be hassle-free. The projected six-month project will see lane closures during daytime installation.

The changes will help, said Greg Veliz, assistant city manager.

“We have had quite a few mishaps and some tragedies. We feel like the upgraded crosswalks will help overall.”

FDOT updated plans to take into account peak traffic times and will work as much on the sidewalks as possible, said Summers.

“The initial work is going to cause some inconvenience, but this is a major start,” said Veliz. “The fine-tuning of the lights and signals will be a long-term issue, and we will be monitoring that, but we are headed in the right direction.”

WINTER BRINGS INCREASED ACTIVITY FOR BOCA CHICA AIR STATION

B

etween anti-terrorism efforts and winter training exercises, the Naval Air Station at Boca Chica has been busy. Our base joins Navy bases around the world by participating in the annual anti-terrorism force protection exercise dubbed “Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain.” In its final week, the exercise concludes Friday, Feb. 15. “It’s to make sure everybody is well versed on force protection and antiterrorism, and it’s Navy-wide, and it’s kind of a big deal,” said Trice Denny, public affairs officer. “Everything we do to get the base secured is tested — anything from having an active shooter, to base protection. This means heightened security at the base.”

The exercise is conducted every year by the Navy, specifically Fleet Forces Command, which is the operational arm, and Navy Installations Command, which is the arm in charge of the Navy bases. This focus on base security and anti-terrorism measures hasn’t slowed down the air training exercises, which Denny calls “our bread and butter.” Locals notice the uptick in training activities every year, when the rattling windows and the roar of jets become the norm in neighborhoods.

Denny explains the increase in air activity: “We train visiting squadrons in any type of aviation training, and that’s our main purpose.” While some folks may complain about the noise, the annual exercises date back to World War II. “We’ve been flying out of Boca Chica since 1943,” said Denny, “and obviously aircrafts have changed, worldwide threats have changed, but we’re always busier in the wintertime.” Denny, who has worked at the base for 16 years, added, “That’s just because it’s winter in other places, and they need to train. Another thing about wintertime, is it’s cooler and clearer and sound travels much farther.”

She also notes the presence of an area south of Key West, over the Gulf, where the military has “massive training ranges over the ocean, that all the services can use: air combat, air to ground, and that’s the other big draw—it’s unencumbered, there’s not a lot of commercial air traffic. We have a system where we can put pods and jets and everything they need to do out there.” So, visiting squadrons may be traveling back and forth from there.

With increased training come increased complaints, and Denny responds to each query individually. She describes them as primarily coming from newer residents and has been encouraged that most residents have an understanding of the necessity of the training. Of course, understanding doesn’t quiet the noise. Denny offers answers to the common queries.

She said, “Part of it is that people want to know why we don’t fly out over the water 100 percent of the time, and the reason is that we fly the way we do in a fleet.” This means the jets land as though they would on an aircraft carrier—flying around it, landing and then taking off and landing again if it wasn’t executed correctly. She also explained that in rainy or foggy weather, the pilots have to land using their instruments, which can take them directly over Key West. Denny also assures residents that there are set patterns that direct pilots over the water, or over the least populated neighborhoods, which are long-established practices covered in their “course rules.” She said, “But it’s like driving a car … you’re not going to always drive the same way.”

MAINE BECAME BATTLE CRY KEY WEST HISTORY

P

resident McKinley sent the second class battleship U.S.S. Maine to Cuba as a show of protection toward American interests on the island.

The warship pulled into Havana Harbor in broad daylight on Jan. 25, 1898. The Maine was moored in Havana Harbor on the night of Feb. 15, 1898. At 9:40 pm, the ship exploded, killing 260 of the crew. Only 94 sailors would survive the deadly blast.

Initially declared an act of war, the destruction of the Maine would create the battle cry of the Spanish-American War, “Remember the Maine!”

A relatively short-lived engagement, the Spanish-American War would end with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on Dec. 12, 1898. The treaty would cede Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States and make them American territories.

Many of those injured during the explosion of the Maine and the subsequent war would be taken to the U.S. Marine Hospital at Key West. The United States Marine Hospital at Key West would close on Feb. 15, 1943, 45 years to the day after the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine.

ne of the most touching moments in literature was between a pig and a spider. “‘Why did you do all this for me?’ he (Wilber) asked. ‘I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.’ ‘You have been my friend,’ replied Charlotte. ‘That in itself is a tremendous thing,’” E.B. White wrote in “Charlotte’s Web.” Opening on Thursday, Feb. 14 – and with a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday, Feb. 20 – is the greatest gift to furry friends up and down the Keys, the extraordinary new animal shelter of the Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (FKSPCA). It’s a big sigh of relief after a massive four-year capital campaign worked to move hundreds of animals from the previous dilapidated property to the new, modern 23,000-square-foot building on College Road. The facility boasts more than 80 dog kennels, housed in 5 different areas, with the ability to separate the sick or the compromised.

Animal control will have its own separate holding area to deal with difficult situations, and there is an area for euthanasia and bereavement as well.

Their average 120 cats will have 6 rooms, including one just for kittens.

There will be an exotic pet area (ask about the new tiny tortoise), bunny area (there are some fluffy ones there now), food prep rooms, a proper spay/neuter clinic, medical and food storage areas, grooming, and offices for staff.

2 “It’s not an ordinary building,” said Jeff Johnson, president of the FKSPCA. “Making sure it was ready and the animals would be safe has been a complicated process. We needed certain things to be done and that happened last week.”

Johnson cites two flaws that delayed the opening. First, the kennels were not watertight. There was a tiny gap between each that allowed water runoff to contaminate each kennel and required a specialist to fix. Also the center has four laundry rooms that will run industrial systems, and installing the wiring was a long process. While some amenities are still in progress, the building is up and running, and the animals have moved in without complications.

“I am very thankful to the community,” said Tammy Fox, FKSPCA executive director. “They have helped save the animals we serve and have helped built a new chapter in animal welfare.” Fox credits the volunteers and staff for making the animal transitions smooth and stress-free.

In the end, the new center cost almost $9 million. Aside from $1.5 million from the county and the city waiving $150,000 in fees, all of the money was privately raised. “And I’m not stopping raising money,” said Johnson, whose sights are on specialty programs like a summer camp for kids, training courses for support animals, and classes about community cats. If Charlotte could write in her web, it would say, “Some Shelter.”

RUBIO VISITS CLEAN CANALS

.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was in the Keys on Feb. 7 to visit a canal at Key By the Sea in Marathon. It was his third visit and, as if on cue, fish frolicked and jumped in the clean canal.

“It sure looks a lot healthier,” Rubio said, noting the canal once was choked with entire mobile homes and other debris following Hurricane Irma.

Rubio was instrumental in securing the federal USDA funds to help with canal cleanup in the Keys — a project that began in mid-August of 2018, and that is going exceedingly well — under budget and ahead of schedule.

Keys officials are set to ask for an extension on the $45.2 million grant. With 83 percent of the canals cleaned, and about $30 million in funds remaining, the county is leading the effort to refocus on dredging, or what it calls sediment removal.

“We’re not asking for additional money,” said Rhonda Haag, the county’s director of Sustainability and Projects.

“We want them to reconsider some of the canals and sediment removal projects they had previously rejected.

And we’re going to ask for a two-month extension at the local level” of the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) grant, managed by the USDA. Haag said if the sediment removal projects are ultimately approved, there will likely be another extension request that would have to be approved in Washington, D.C. The county began submitting requests for sediment removal under the same grant five months ago. While Islamorada had some debris in the canals, the worst problems in the village boundaries were associated with sand-choked canals making navigation possible only for very shallow draft boats.

Haag said the county submitted a list of 34 canals to be dredged to the USDA. That has already been knocked down to 10 canals, still under review. The sedimentclogged canals have been identified in Big Pine Key (5), Marathon (3), and Islamorada (2).

“We don’t understand,” County Administrator Roman Gastesi told Rubio. “The money is there. There are some canals in Islamorada that you can walk across.”

She said only two canals in Islamorada have been approved for sediment removal, and the USDA has only agreed to clean part of the waterway.

“The funds remaining should be spent in Islamorada.

We were supposed to get $6 million of the overall grant, and so far only $2 million has been expended in Islamorada,” Gillis said.

Haag said the NCRS local managers are only approving sediment removal where deposits are highest, and that portion of the canal varies by location.

“First, we are very thankful to NRCS for the grant and the service. It’s very good,” Haag said. “But this particular issue seems to be a matter of interpretation of the guidelines.” Haag said the same grant was used to clear entire canals — not just portions — 20 years ago after Hurricane Georges. “The strict interpretation could be happening at the local level; we’re not really sure what’s going on. We seek to restore the canals to their pre-Irma condition.”

The county is administering the canal cleanup and sediment removal on behalf of its constituents and those residing in municipalities. The bulk of the grant originates with the USDA, and 25 percent matching funds are paid out of state Stewardship Act funds.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead the cleanup. Working with Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island, the workforce numbers about 60 people using grapple trucks, sonar boats and barges.

Wood Environment is monitoring the work.

There are two methods of sediment removal — hydraulic (pumping) and mechanical (an excavator on a barge). Haag said only the hydraulic method is allowed in unincorporated Monroe County and is the most expensive.

“If we get approval, and the mechanical method was better to deal with the type of sediment in the canal, I would have to ask the county for a waiver,” she said.

y name is Kirby. I am a mother, wife, radio DJ, business owner, human.

My name is Kirby. I am depressed, anxious and drink more than I should.

What if we could strip away the non-stop filters and pretty pictures we find ourselves scrolling through, endlessly comparing ourselves to those who seem to “have it all?”

“She looks so put together all the time ... so happy... always smiling ...

Her kids are always perfectly dressed and posed ... her house is always so clean ... her makeup is perfect ... she and her husband look so in love ...”

Deep down, you probably know it took 20 re-takes, the perfect lighting, three outfit changes, the right filter and a closet full of the mess she moved to make her home appear in order. But somehow it doesn’t matter in the moment. We believe our lives should look like the picture, too. Why? From the outside looking in, my life looks pretty good. And it is; I live in paradise with my husband and two happy healthy kids, have a “cool” radio job, my own side hustle and a really nice roof over my head. What could I possibly have to feel depressed about? I’m writing this to strip away the belief that anyone’s life looks the way you think.

No, my life is not bad; I haven’t suffered abuse or poverty or hit total rock bottom. Yet sadness finds me. I cry often.

I get so anxious I want to crawl out of my body. When my husband travels, I find solace at night alone on my beautiful porch with a bottle of Ketel one.

Meet Kirby Trahan.

We are so afraid as a society to talk about the things that aren’t pretty.

To admit our life is more messy than clean and that our minds may torture us. So we bottle it up, smile, laugh, post pictures that look like it’s ok so people think we’re ok. Why? If we could learn to be brave enough to answer the question “How are you?” honestly, could we ease some pain by allowing that truth to breathe?

We’ve lost too many lives in our community these last few years, and too many times we hear “I had no idea he/she was going through something” or “I had no clue it was that bad.” We are very good as humans at filtering our lives and letting people see only what we want them to see. Maybe we believe that if people think we have it together, we might actually believe it too.

By suppressing our pain, we allow it to grow deeper inside of us. By not living life honestly, we are doing a disservice to everyone: our partners, our friends, our kids, our co-workers, but most importantly ourselves.

I’m not a doctor; I hold no license; I have zero qualifications as a healer or therapist. Hell, I’m still figuring out how to heal myself. But I do know that talking about our pain is the first step and an immediate release takes place in admitting not just the good, but the bad and the ugly.

You may also feel depressed.

Anxious. Drink too much. Have an unhealthy relationship with food. Or with men. You may harm yourself for a release. Or feel like you’re failing at work. In your marriage. As a mom. In life.

Be kind to yourself. Give grace.

And breathe.

Kirby Trahan moved to Key West from New England in 2011 and never plans to shovel a driveway again. She is the midday DJ on FM 97.7, enjoys triking around the island with her two toddlers in tow and credits music and therapy for keeping her somewhat sane.

They fought, cheated and ruled together. Eventually, he divorced her because she didn’t produce an “heir,” and married someone else.

In 1821, Napoleon died in exile (she had already departed the earthly realm). The former emperor’s final words were said to be: “France, the Army, the Head of the Army, Josephine.”

n Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, hand-raised Caribbean flamingos Rhett and Scarlett celebrate their 7th birthday in an all-day event (from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory.

As co-owners, Sam Trophia and George Fernandez envisioned the Nature Conservatory side of the operation as something that always needed to be exciting and appealing to all ages.

Rhett and Scarlett epitomize that vision.

In the slow months after Hurricane Irma, they seemed to want more human interaction.

General Operations Manager Clarisa Fluker would often come in before opening hours with her 3-year old daughter, whom Rhett and Scarlett are so fond of we think they might think she is their offspring. “Rhett and Scarlett comb her hair and then they take turns playing chase, Quora runs first and they chase her, then they turn around and she follows them. It’s fun for all three of them,” Fluker said.

It was soon apparent that Rhett and Scarlett thrived on this kind of interaction, eventually dubbed a “Flamingle.” With advance reservations, guests can spend one hour after business hours socializing and enjoying a

memorable close-encounter with the flamingos. They often brush hair or try to sit on people’s laps. Sometimes they just want to give a little show to entertain their guests with periodic bowing, dancing and prancing about.

During mating season each year, Rhett and Scarlett get an extra surge of energy and often want to explore beyond their pond enclosure.

The word “flamingo” comes from the Spanish and Latin word “flamenco,” meaning “fire” and refers to the beautiful bright colors.

In a flock, also known as a “flamboyance,” they will mate at the same time, something very few animal species are known to do. This allows the chicks all to be born within a few days of each other. During their breeding season, they will lay one egg.

Flamingos mate for life with a lifespan of about 20 to 30 years.

In captivity, without predators, they can live up to 50 years.

NOT SO FAST, NEW YORK KEY LIME PIE STARTED WITH ‘HOOKERS’

hef Stella Parks probably didn’t know she was cooking up controversy when she claimed Key lime pie was inspired by a 1931 Borden Company recipe published David Sloan from their New York test kitchen. A 1996 article in the Los Angeles Times put forth the very same theory, but residents of the Keys didn’t pay any mind to the idea back then, because they simply knew it was wrong. Today the media loves a good controversy, so logic be damned, right?

Not any more. Put on your thinking caps and consider these sweet treats of logic as we dive deep into “The Key Lime Pie Hole.”

Foods evolve. Claiming a dessert didn’t exist until it had a published recipe to validate it is pretzel logic. In the case of Key lime pie, we have good reasons to believe it started in the late 1800s with sponge fishermen (called “hookers”) pouring sweetened condensed milk on stale Cuban bread in a coffee mug, stirring in a bird egg and topping it with lime juice.

Limes and condensed milk were staples of nutrition at sea, so there was nothing ground-breaking about this creation, and recording the recipe probably didn’t even cross the hookers’ minds. Consider, too, that making a Key lime pie as the fishermen did involved so few ingredients and such a simple process, that it would be the equivalent complexity of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich today. No fancy recipe required.

But let’s pretend for a moment that there was a secret society of hookers who shared recipes over tea and submitted them to the newspaper’s society editor for publication. Chances are those recipes were destroyed. People assume newspapers are archived in temperature controlled caves and library vaults, but the fact is, most of Key West’s newspapers were in a backroom on Greene Street, stacked chronologically when flood waters started to rise. Every paper stacked below the mid-1920s was wiped out, along with any local pie recipes that might have been in them. It was a terrible loss, yet I don’t believe a single Key lime pie recipe fell victim.

Key lime pie started off as a workingclass food. The society ladies may have served it to their kids and enjoyed it behind closed doors, but there is not a chance in hell they would serve a hooker’s dish to dinner guests or brag about it as their creation in a newspaper or Woman’s Club Cookbook.

Our dear Key lime pie had some maturing to do before she was ready for prime time, and it would take Key lime pie-oneers like Aunt Sally, Fern Butters and a cast of Key lime characters to evolve the pie to the level where it is today.

It should also be noted that what we call a “Key lime pie” today was simply called a “lime pie” before people started marketing them. “Lime Pie” appears on a Key West menu printed in a local paper as early as 1926, the same year accounts show the pie was being served in Key Largo. Sorry, New York.

In our next column we will go a little further down The Key Lime Pie Hole and spend some time with one of the ladies credited with inventing Key lime pie in the late 1800s.

T

hat time has come again.

It’s the time to remove and stash that rainbow of pro football jerseys that populates Dr. Stanley Sack Duval Street from Labor Day to That Big Sunday in February. Yes, football season is officially over — but unofficially, it lives on, especially down here, where pickup games are pretty easy to orchestrate year-round. And year-round, there are always other sports to take over.

What this also means is that it’s never “off-season” to talk about head injury. This is especially true since in recent years, how we manage head injury, especially concussion, has changed a lot. Those who follow the goings-on in the NFL may notice what appears to be an emerging culture of safety. Let’s spend a little time seeing how some of these changes translate to school sports.

First off, there are so many terms tossed around, you’d think that the medical community is running a fleaflicker offense. What IS a concussion?

It’s best described as an injury to the brain that temporarily interrupts it from working correctly. Although many concussions are from a direct blow to the head, they sometimes occur after trauma to other parts of the body. In any case, obvious signs of head injury may be absent. Also, the player does not need to become unconscious or “black out” to have a concussion; even mild symptoms such as headache, difficulty concentrating or cranky mood can mean trouble.

The “old ways” of managing concussion seemed pretty simple. Kids who showed significant symptoms were usually taken out of the game and given quick medical attention.

Those who didn’t were rested for a while — as little as 15 minutes, according to one 2001 guideline — and went back into the game.

The sicker concussion victims were rested and monitored either at home

or in the hospital, often with tests to rule out a more serious problem. If it was a first concussion, players were returned to sports, usually after a week with no symptoms.

Nowadays, this thinking generally doesn’t cut it. The reason? It appears that brain cells are damaged a little more than originally thought, even with mild concussions. They need time to heal, which takes oxygen and nutrition. And the thinking now is that brain activity can slow this healing process.

For this reason, sports medicine now advocates a “graduated return to play.” What this means is that we rest the brain. To say that means “no thinking” is maybe a little simplistic, but there is a grain of truth in that statement. Children are now encouraged to engage in schoolwork and other heady activities initially on a limited basis, and to pay attention to their symptoms when they do: even a headache is a reason to scale back. And this might mean no video games or texting to start out!

Similarly, the return to sports is gradual. It may mean just light cardiovascular activity at first, such as walking; then, running; then, maybe some non-contact drills. You get the idea.

In most cases, it’s actually the schools that have “run with the ball” and developed return-to-sports policies. Health care providers are intimately involved in the process as well; occasionally a specialist is called in to help with the game plan.

Situations and providers differ so much that there is no more a road map to recovery from head injury than there is a road map to the Super Bowl.

Your child’s “team” (not THAT one; rather, her provider, trainer, coach and teachers) will always be the best resource in terms of how to manage concussion.

You don’t have to bar-hop to realize how important sports are. For kids, as for all of us, it’s an opportunity for physical activity, camaraderie, and self-esteem (not to mention fun). The newer developments in the science of head injury management are designed to keep everyone in the game for life — and that’s a good thing.

his weekend, Fringe Theater celebrates Black History Month with a staged reading of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” presented at the Frederick Douglass Community Center.

“The Piano Lesson” is August Wilson’s second Pulitzer Prize-winning play, and it is one of his most haunting works. At the heart of the play is an ornately carved upright piano – the Charles family’s most prized (and hard-won) possession. It has been gathering dust in the parlor of Berniece Charles’ Pittsburgh home.

When Boy Willie, Berniece’s exuberant brother, bursts into her home with his dream of buying the same Mississippi land that his family had worked as slaves, the piano becomes the center of a family struggle.

Should it be sold to create a stable financial future or cherished as a symbol of loss and promise?

“I was asked by my sister to participate in this reading,” said City Commissioner Clayton Lopez. “I felt like it was a great opportunity to do something special for Black History Month in Bahama Village. The play is an excellent depiction of black life in the 1930s. And it’s particularly relevant today. We have to remember our history to plan our future.”

The cast includes many community members who were born and raised in Key West, like Minister Glenwood Lopez, security guard Jerry Butler, HOB student Detra Dor, and the director of the Blessed Community Gospel Choir, Joan Leggett.

By comparison, bartender Gil Parker (who moved to Key West in 1994) and actor Richard Quint (who moved here more recently) are relative newcomers.

“The cast members are awesome people,” says the show’s director, Wilhelmina Lopez Martin. “I could not ask for better people to work with.

After each rehearsal, my confidence in making this a success is stronger and the excitement I feel is electrifying. I am looking forward to bringing our community together through theater. I am so grateful to Rebecca Tomlinson for her vision, Fringe Theater for their complete support, and the City of Key West and its staff.

Fringe’s staged reading of “The Piano Lesson” is presented in partnership with the City of Key West and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.

All used oils get stored and picked up and none of the bad stuff goes into the ground any more.

It benefits the environment and lessens the likelihood of used oil being dumped into nature.

Just one gallon of motor oil in waterways could pollute one million gallons of water.

When the oil comes out of the cars we service, it’s drained into the bucket and gets moved into the portable oil carrier, which is then wheeled outside and stored in the tank.

EMC Oil Corporation comes with a big truck and picks it up when the tank is full.

It costs us 25 cents per gallon to haul the used motor oil away.

Waste motor oil can be distilled into diesel fuel or marine fuel in a process that is similar to oil re-refining. The re-refining process means that used oil is restored to new oil by

removing chemical impurities, dirt and heavy metals. The lubrication properties persist and oil can actually be recycled indefinitely but in the final step of this complicated process additives are blended in to achieve the right detergent and anti-friction qualities of the oil.

EMC used to sell it to the sugar cane refineries and asphalt companies. The latter used it for heating up the asphalt. Now both of these industries use natural gas instead.

If you change your own oil from your truck, boat, lawnmower, make sure that you take it to a collection center for recycling. Marathon’s Advanced Auto Parts accepts used motor oil as long as it doesn’t contain gas.

W

ho better to be the Valentine for Key West than Piper Smith, vice president for Historic Tours of America? When she was 12, her Navy father and family retired here, and Smith fell in love with the Keys life. The city was her childhood playground. Remembering biking with her friends through deserted old town streets, living on a boat, life down at the docks and Key West High without air conditioning, Smith thought it was the best of times. And when her parents’ boat ran out of room her senior year in high school, they rented a houseboat just for her. How cool is that? One to follow where the breeze takes her — she was named after an airplane, after all — Smith returned home after attending the University of Florida and started a lifelong relationship with Historic Tours of America. She was first an assistant to Sue Barroso and drove a trolley on the weekends to make ends meet.

“It was hard 30 years ago, too, nobody said it was easy,” said Smith “But Key West will pay you back in spades.” Now, Smith thinks it’s fabulous to have grown up here.

Years ago, she tried the mainland but “By day three, I knew it wasn’t for me and spent nine months trying to get back here.” Smith is also a champion for The Truman Little White House, works with TDC, loves animals and promotes Key West like no other. Even a hurricane can’t scare her away. “I love this little island, and it’s not worth leaving,” she said. That’s a love story everyone in town can relate to.

Do you have a life credo or motto? Nope.

What’s your favorite part of working with HTA? The people ... hands down. It’s the people who make HTA such a great place to work. It doesn’t hurt that we are in a pretty fun business too.

Having a bike as a kid and the freedom to go anywhere. It was magical.

‘I LOVE THIS LITTLE ISLAND’

You stayed during Irma. What effect did it have on you, what did you notice about our island? You learn real fast you can get by without creature comforts and realize how lucky you are to have them. When people have to rely on each other and not their electronic devices, great things can be accomplished.

What did you learn driving a trolley? First, there is a lot of history on this little island of ours and secondly, that the island is a pretty special place.

You know the island so well, served on boards; would you ever run for public office? No way. I make a much better Indian than a chief.

What did you think you would grow out of but haven’t? Well actually, I have a closet full of clothes that I regrettably have grown out of ...

Which TV, movie or super hero character is your alter ego? In my mind, Wonder Woman, but my staff would tell you (fictional Vogue editor) Miranda Priestly.

What job would you be terrible at? Veterinarian. I would be in tears the whole time.

ver the past few weeks, the Keys Weekly has offered continued coverage on the piloted pedestrian mall (foot traffic only) along the 500 - 700 blocks of Duval Street. The program, which will run for 11 weeks starting Feb. 15, aims to drive needed traffic to vendors in the heart of Duval, in hopes that others areas of the nation’s most popular street will follow suit. Driven out of their native India, the Kadam family opens an Indian restaurant right across the street from a Michelin-starred French restaurant. Hassan Kadam, one of the sons, is a gifted chef and the family soon runs up against the machinations of the haughty Madame Mallory (Mirren). The plot is predictable, but there are a few original notes, like the gradual build between the elder Kadam

and Mallory, and the competitive sparks between the younger lovers, both chefs. The food sequences will make you very hungry.

What’s the best rule at your school?

Upperclassmen are allowed to eat lunch outside, giving us freedom to take advantage of our beautiful island.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? High school really does end in the blink of an eye.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS? I’m involved in National Honor Society, Beta club, and Interact club because they focus on my community; Zonta, Executive Board and Student Council because they allow me to voice my opinion and lead; Sideline and Competition cheer because they teach life skills and help me create a bond with my teammates.

What are your plans after high school? I will attend Florida State University for four years to receive my bachelor’s in social sciences.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Coats, because she always believed in me and my capabilities, also because she pushed me to be better academically and outside of school.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? Hanging out with my family and friends.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I want to graduate from college, travel to another continent, and begin my career in a field I love.
