Ordinance, property purchases approved

A

n ordinance to slow boats through the narrow and shallow Wheel Ditch near Upper Matecumbe received unanimous support from Islamorada Village Council during a Jan. 31 meeting. Members also said "yes" to the purchase of property for affordable housing.

Council approved the second reading of the ordinance to create an idle speed/no wake zone for the Wheel Ditch Harbor that’s located off Whale Harbor Channel near Upper Matecumbe. Action from council comes following a boating accident in April 2018 that left one dead. The ordinance looks to improve boater safety through the 1,600-foot length of the Wheel Ditch.

Following a discussion in fall 2018, council directed the Village Near Shore Water Advisory Committee to review and discuss various options to improve boater safety in the area. Based on recommendations, council directed staff to draft an ordinance for consideration that would create a boating restricted area for the Whale Harbor Ditch. The village also consulted with FWC and went forward with an ordinance to restrict speed.

By establishing an idle speed zone, Village Attorney Roget Bryan said, all vessels must proceed at a speed to maintain steerage and headway. With the ordinance ad-

opted, the village will pay for signs and buoys at about $5,000. Annual maintenance costs are expected to be $1,500.

Per the adopted ordinance, a penalty for a speeding violation will be $50 as set forth in state law. FWC and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will write citations. The ordinance has received public backing.

“I personally am in full support of a no wake area there because it really doesn’t deter you too much to go around; it’s about a 30-second delay, if that, unlike the Wheel Ditch in Lower Matecumbe,” said Capt. Steve Friedman.

Council followed up with a 4-0 vote to authorize the purchase of three vacant parcels on Gardenia Street in Plantation Key. The village will pay $315,000 for the lots that front U.S. 1. near Plantation Key School. Lawless said closing will happen within 60 to 90 days. Longtime resident Van Cadenhead urged council to proceed with the purchase.

“We need affordable housing,” he said.

Members also approved the purchase of 173 Orchid Street for $50,000.

Lawless said council can decide to declare it surplus property and sell it to the highest bidder, negotiate with an affordable housing developer or keep it for conservation purposes. Councilman Ken Davis said affordable housing should be a priority with the purchase.

“If we get it and sell to a contractor, it should be for affordable housing,” he said. “Or the money we make goes back to the affordable housing fund.”

A

nn Housman was born in Staten Island, N.Y. on May 1, 1797. She would marry Thomas Gibson on Feb. 4, 1818 at the Staten Island Dutch Reform Church. While still living in New York, they would have five children — all of whom would be baptized on Oct. 12, 1828.

One month later, nearly to the day, Thomas Gibson would purchase all rights, titles, and interest to a general store, two-story house and kitchen on Indian Key from Silas and Avis Fletcher for $2,500.

The Gibson family is recorded on the 1830 Monroe County Census as having six children. One of their children would be born in Florida, presumably on Indian Key. On July 5, 1831, Thomas Gibson would sell his general store, twostory house, kitchen, billiards table, and nine-pin bowling alley to his brother-in-law for $5,000. Gibson’s brother-in-law, Jacob Housman, is sometimes referred to as the “Wrecker King of Indian Key.” The two-story building, billiards table, and nine-pin bowling alley would become known as the Tropical Hotel. By 1840, the Gibson family had moved away from Indian Key. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

benefit that started in 1988 will take place next month to benefit research into cystic

fibrosis.

The Redbone Island Walk, a 3.1-mile walk, will take place on March 2 at Founders Park, MM 87. Registration is at 8 a.m. and a complimentary barbeque at 11 a.m. follows the walk.

Cystic fibrosis is a lifethreatening genetic disease that affects 30,000 children and young adults in the United States. More than 10 million Americans are unknowing symptomless carriers of one copy of the defective cystic fibrosis gene; it takes two copies of the gene for a child to be born with the disease. Since the Redbone first began in 1988, the average life expectancy has gone from early teens to 40 years. Still, there is no cure.

Sign-up for the Redbone Island Walk is at greatstrides.cff. org. Funds raised will support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and participants can earn prizes. Each participant who raises $25 or more will receive a Redbone Island Walk T-shirt.

er the request of Gov. Ron DeSantis, the South Florida Water Management District is close to a clean slate, with more resignations coming in the last week.

Two members haven’t submitted their resignations, but their terms end in March.

With seats now open, many are beginning to submit letters of interest to the governor. The board hasn’t had a voice from the Keys for some time. But that just might change, with a familiar Upper Keys name submitting a letter of intent to be on the board.

During a recent village council meeting, longtime resident Van Cadenhead took to the microphone to voice support for Capt.

Steve Friedman, Keys resident of 18 years and commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association. Friedman, who ran for state representative last year, has submitted his letter of interest to the governor’s office for a seat on the board. Former Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent has also submitted a letter.

“He’s very well familiar with the problem every bit as much as Neugent does,” Cadenhead said.

“If we could have two people up there out of nine, because they’re at-large positions, I think our voice would be heard here. … We really vitally need that because I think the contract they signed with Big Sugar at the last minute was entirely wrong.”

Councilman Mike Forster noted that Friedman’s very involved in water quality issues. Forster applauded Friedman for throwing his name into the mix. Council agreed to submit a letter of support for Friedman.

“For somebody to want to be on this board and drive to West Palm and not get paid, it’s really not a stepping stone to anything except taking care of his own backyard and taking care of us,” he said.

Friedman thanked the council for supporting him, adding that it’s important the board have representatives from Monroe County.

“Obviously, I feel very strongly that (it would help) to have a fishing guide who makes his living on the water be represented up there, as would someone with prior political experience such as George,” Friedman said.

Incredibly heartwarming and incredibly romantic.In honor of Valentine’s Day, Keys Weekly had the opportunity to speak with several individuals living happily in love with their better halves. CJ Berwick and Cal Thomas In the words of CJ: “We were friends in high school but we never dated. We both went our separate ways and on to our lives. We saw each other occasionally at class reunions in Maryland.

My late husband died within two months of his late wife, so I had corresponded with him.

I emailed to see if we could meet and talk about our losses. I never had the mini-reunion here because of Irma; my house had water in it and the property was destroyed. He came and visited and stayed at the Hampton Inn. We got together and I had friends over for dinner. It was nice. We talked a bit.

Then it was the next night, he wanted to go to a movie, so we went and saw a not-so-good movie. Then we went to Chef Michael’s for dinner.

All of sudden I got up to excuse myself. He said he’d been praying to God to find someone to fill his life again. He said lightning kind of struck when I went to the restroom. He came back one more time and we went out again and he still stayed at the Hampton Inn. He left and went to Ireland and Wales for the holidays to have a place to go. I was here with my family.

While he was away, he kept sending me a love song and wrote to me every day. And it was very sincere and he had the reputation of being a good person. He took care of his ill wife of nine years.

He invited me to the National Prayer Breakfast one day, and after he had a dinner party at his house for 25 people. He had arranged to have all of them know how serious he was about me. It progressed from there and here we are.

We both went to school here at Coral Shores. We’ve been together 10 years and we have a wedding ceremony in March. It will be a romantic thing here in Key Largo. We went to college together in Gainesville. We’re both artists and both were on fine arts scholarships at Santa Fe College. We’ve always been supportive of what each other’s been interested in. I did performing arts and she was more in the visual arts.

After college, and with both families having businesses, we decided to move back down to South Florida; she’s from Homestead and I’m from the Keys. She’s working as the head safety person at a job site in Homestead and I’m chief operator at the radio station. We’ve been together a long time.

We really just click well; it’s the reason why we’ve been together. We do gardening together, went to church in Homestead every Sunday. We like living here in the Keys. We have a little garden we grow, and we have chicken that lay eggs every day. We do art together; we shoot a lot of photos together. She does pottery. She’s real artsy.

In the words of Lisa: It could be a typical story of the Keys. I met my husband at a bar in 2001. He was a bartender at Holiday Inn tiki bar and I went there on my day off to be by the pool and meet with friends. One night, I went to the bar to hang out with friends, and he came over as it was his night off. He asked me to go out with him and so we went to a sushi restaurant. We went out and have seen each other since then.

He had a house, as did I. I had dogs, as did he. We planned on getting married after being together 3 to 4 months. I said let’s wait a while, so we got married in 2003. We were 39 then.

It’s been 15 years since our marriage in August. We’ve had a great time. He’s a personal trainer. He has a studio. I’m a hairdresser. We have four dogs, two cats and a guinea pig. Neither one of us had kids. We kept adding dogs to our family.

We love going on cruises, camping and going out to restaurants around town. We have a lot of same interests but have our differences in music.

He likes heavy metal and I like disco!

He’s very friendly and outgoing, has a beautiful smile and is so funny. He knows so much about so many things, and he’s a big trivia buff. I usually go, “I don’t know what that is, you might as well just tell me!”Everything’s been great. We have a good life. He’s been here over 30 years and I’ve been 30 years. We’re pretty well established.

We’ll probably never leave the Keys.

Tax help available at Islamorada Library

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Weekly will have a lionfish fry in partnership with Coastal Realty and Islamorada Dive Center. The event will be held at Coastal Realty, 81927 Overseas Hwy., Islamorada, from 1 to 4 p.m. Islamorada Beer Company will be donating beer to the function. There will be a raffle for a golf cart thanks to Riva.

Lionfish jewelry will also be at the event for purchase. All proceeds go to benefit the Good Health Clinic.

Through April 15, volunteers from the AARP will be coming to Islamorada Public Library every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help low- to middle-income taxpayers. The next session is Feb. 11. You do not have to be a member of AARP or a retiree. No appointments are taken; taxpayers are helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring: a copy of your 2017 tax return; your current year’s tax information; social security cards for yourself and any dependents; photo ID; details of your health insurance coverage; and any other pertinent information. Basket weaving back at Islamorada Library Artisan Robin Forte is coming back to Islamorada Library to teach basket weaving classes on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn how to weave pine needle baskets using the ancient techniques of the Seminoles. A one-time fee of $20 will cover all supplies. It generally takes two classes to make one basket. Registration is available at the front desk or by phone, 305-664-4645.

Ride through time on a history trolley The Matecumbe Historical Trust's next historical “Trolley Tour Through Time” will be Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m., from the Islamorada Moose Lodge, 81573 Old Highway. A monitor located in the trolley shows more than 90 photos allowing you to see the past while viewing the present.Tours are about one hour. Reservations are needed to guarantee seating. A pop-up shop by historical trust volunteers will provide information, books, t-shirts, historic photographs and memorabilia for sale.

Tour de Keys bike ride benefits children's shelter On Friday, April 5, cyclists will "ride for the kids" the entire 125 miles from North Key Largo to Mile Marker Zero in Key West. The sixth annual Le Tour de Keys honors the work of the Florida Keys Children's Shelter, which serves more than 500 youth per year. The event is limited to experienced cyclists who are fit to ride from Ocean Reef to Key West in one day. Competition challenges high schoolers SARAH THOMAS

here’s great news on the financial horizon: high schoolers from the Upper Keys all the way to Key West are eligible to enter Florida Keys Credit Union’s “Financial Fitness Challenge,” winning up to $5,000 and learning plenty in the process.

While more than half of the states don’t require high school students to take an economics course, Florida does. Keys Federal Credit Union has teamed up with the League of Southeastern Credit Unions and made a serious commitment to ensuring that Keys kids don’t fall behind on finances.

The kicker? It’s fun!

KFCU, the Monroe County School District, and local businesses will create and sponsor student teams of two to three to compete in the educational tournament. It’s through a program created by Visa and the National Football League, called “financial football.”

The interface is sophisticated and engaging, like any video game, and students can play as one of their favorite stars from the NFL. Each correctly answered financial literacy question results in yards gained. The topics span budgeting, identity theft, debt, credit, financial institutions, and life events. Anyone can play the game online at www.financialfootball.com (I already learned a thing or two), but only Keys high school students can compete in the Financial Fitness Tournament.

While last year, it was only a Key West event, it’s now inclusive to all high school students in the Keys. “They’ll compete at their area level, and then

there is a competition to crown a Keys champion," said Sarah Evans, marketing coordinator at FKCU, "then they’ll compete at a state level, and then the league will handle state and regional levels.” The prize is $1,500 for each smaller region (Key West, Marathon, Key Largo). The Keys champion will receive an additional $1,500, and the winning students can compete at the state level for more cash prizes. FKCU sees it as an incentive to save money for college or another long-term goal.

FKCU is also encouraging adults and businesses to get involved through local sponsorship of their teams — the entry fee is $250 per team. They are hoping for as many entries as possible, to make for a healthy competition and more learning opportunities for the players.

The closing date for entries is Feb. 17, and the tournament is running through March. There are events pages on FKCU’s website, as well as Facebook.

It’s not just about the short-term goal of prizewinnings. Says Evans: “It’s about understanding the value of the money as well … It encourages them to play a little bit more, and it’s non-traditional learning. It’s real world financial fitness, and how to be savvy financially.”

FKCU CEO Maggie Sayer has been behind the effort since its inception.

Said Sayer, “We are excited to partner with both the businesses in our communities and the League of Southeast Credit Unions to provide a fun, educational competition for Keys high school students. By helping educate and inform our local students about money management and personal finance, we hope to help produce future financially literate members of our communities.”

ommunity members and featured artists celebrated the History of Diving Museum’s new featured exhibit, "Dive into Art," which opened on Feb. 1.

Meander through the gallery with work created located by members of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles as well as students from Key Largo and Plantation Key schools.

The art includes hanging sea creatures painted by more than 200 students from the schools. Students learned marine life and each chose a wooden sea creature to paint.

There’s also Key Largo School’s hand-built coral reef. Made out of clay, the artwork was assembled by students under the direction of artist Diane Smith and art teacher Kim Walwer.

Free admission for locals at diving museum The History of Diving Museum is offering free admission to locals on Feb. 14 as a thank-you to the community for its support.

See how lovebirds Drs. Joe and Sally Bauer expanded their passion for diving into an international collection spanning more than 4,000 years of diving history. The museum has 3,000 square feet of exhibits about man's quest to explore under the sea, as well as the South Florida connection to launching underwater recreational diving using a Divinhood.

The pet-friendly museum, which calls itself "one of the bestkept secrets of the Florida Keys," is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 pm.

To receive free admission, local residents must present photo ID and proof of Monroe County residence.

Message from the Sheriff I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I’m happy to report that we had few reports of thefts over the holidays. Though we did take some reports, the number of instances were few and for that, I give credit where it’s due: To all of you. You locked your doors, monitored your mail and helped out by keeping an eye on your neighbor’s home or their boat while they were away. It’s that sort of community mindset that makes for safer neighborhoods. Which brings me to my next point: Crime continues to drop in Monroe County!

I’m very happy to see our annual crime statistics showed an impressive decrease in crime and an increase in the clearance rate for the 2018 calendar year. Specifically, overall crime is down by 16.3 percent. Two of the biggest drops were aggravated assault — which dropped from 160 in 2017 to 137 in 2018 — and larceny. There were 817 reported larcenies in 2017 and 689 in 2018.

We also saw a significant increase in the number of cases cleared. In 2017, the clearance rate for crimes was 31 percent. That figure jumped to 38.6 percent for 2018. The state average for clearance rates was about 23.4 percent for 2017, so our clearance rate is significantly higher than the 2017 state average.

I want to personally thank the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office for working so tirelessly. Life in law enforcement can be a tough assignment, but I know our people take a lot of pride in solving burglaries, returning stolen goods and making this community safer in general. To them, we all owe a big, “Thank you!”

ith 9.5 million records and 233,000 surveys to date, Reef Environmental Education Foundation continues its mission to conserve ocean life through citizen science, research and environmental education. At the helm as executive director is Caroly Shumway, who’s been on the job since Aug. 20.

A third-generation oceanographer, from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Shumway is a fish geek with 27 years of experience in marine and freshwater conservation, research, policy and education. Her experience primarily comes from her time in the Asia/Pacific region, Africa and the U.S. She’s led fish biodiversity surveys along the Congo River, dived in Lake Tanganyika to explore fish habitat and recently reviewed coral reef restoration work in the Maldives.

Entering the six-month mark in her tenure with REEF, Shumway says she wants REEF to be even more impactful than it already is.

“We want to take advantage of the data, which we have 25 years worth, and maximize use of that,” she said.

“Our citizen science, we have a large database. It’s useful data for the community and the government to stay apprised of.”

Shumway, who grew up in Rhode Island, says she loves the small town, low-key and funky feel of the Keys.

“To me, the essence of the Keys is the underwater pumpkin carving contest in October,” she said. “

Do you have a nickname? I don’t.

My name's unusual enough.

Do you have life credo or motto?

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.

How would you describe your time at REEF so far? Great. I love my staff. I have a really great team and I really enjoy the community and I like our board. Our work is super important to protect our coral reefs.

What were you doing before REEF? I was chief scientist for the U.S. Agency for International Development, which is part of the State Department in Washington, which provides global aid for people all over the world.

Where did you live before you came to the Keys? I was in Washington D.C., right after that I went to Rhode Island and lived there for 25 years. Prior to that I was in Fiji.

REEF director hits the ground running What drew you to the area? The job and the feel of the community.

Is there something about the area you find unique? I’m a big fan of craft brew, so I’ve gone to the brewing companies like Florida Keys Brewing Company. What’s also cool are the peacocks. I enjoy seeing them. I also like the gumbo limbo trees. They’re so cool.

What’s something people don’t know about you? I led a biodiversity survey down the Congo River in Congo, which is a challenging and scary place to be.

In your spare time, what can you be found doing? Kayaking, diving, reading and watching movies.

You’re going to lunch with a famous person, who would it be?

Meryl Streep.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Guacamole and tzatziki and crackers.

Your go-to drink? A porter.

If you could go anywhere, where would you go? I want to go to Singapore and Vietnam.

What superpower do you wish you possessed? To fly. That would be so much fun.

Your favorite TV show/movie?

I love "The Princess Bride." I love the motto.

he Florida Keys Wild Bird Center (FKWBC) celebrated its 30th birthday on Feb. 2, under the stars at its Mission Wild Bird Hospital, MM 92, in Tavernier. While many may not be as familiar with the hospital, nearly everyone knows of the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, MM 93.6, where visitors can see many species of rescued birds up close and learn their stories.

The FKWBC was founded by longtime educator “Bird Lady” Laura Quinn 30 years ago. “She was a firecracker and that spirit lives on in our staff and volunteers,” said Jordan Budnik, executive director of the center, which rescues, treats and rehabs more than 800 birds each year.

Some 50 attendees enjoyed appetizers and drinks as they surveyed the silent auction items and listened to music by The Lower Mat Cats. Budnik was thrilled to announce a challenge grant from the Batchelor Foundation of South Florida, which is matching up to $35,000 in straight-up donations to the FKWBC. The grant has a six-month window, ending on May 31.

Lower Mat Cats drummer and local artist Pasta Pantaleo got the ball rolling with a pledge of $250. He also donated a piece of original artwork to the silent auction.

Next was the highlight of the evening: a guided tour of the hospital, led

by Emily Buonapane, a state-certified wildlife rehabilitator and volunteer coordinator for FKWBC. Guests were greeted by Leopold, a barred owl who perched on his handler’s arm, then escorted through rooms filled with crates of every size to accommodate the variety of patients. Many were covered with towels or sheets to keep the recuperating birds calm and stress-free.

Buonapane warned the visitors that “90 percent of the patients here eat fish, so please pardon the smell!”

avernier resident Kate DeLoach has joined the board of directors of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation. The not-for-profit organization formed in 2013 to develop and operate the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center.

DeLoach, a founding member of Flagler’s Folly Society, a young professionals' group supporting the foundation, is a partner with Southern Strategy Group, a government relations firm. Previously she served six years as district and legislative aide to State Rep. Holly Raschein.

DeLoach grew up in Key Largo and earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Flagler College in St. Augustine and a master's degree in international relations from The City College of New York. She is a graduate of Leadership Monroe Class XXIV and a commissioner with the Monroe County Historic Preservation Commission. She lives in Tavernier with her husband John, and enjoys reading, fishing, scuba diving, and Florida Keys history.

onopane. She also showed guests the array of specialized food and supplements (VitaHawk — who knew?) used to help get the birds healthy again.

In the X-ray room, images on the wall provided a clear and sober reminder of the center’s mission: there were X-rays of birds that had swallowed fishhooks and fishing line, or plastics that had become stuck in the animal’s digestive tracts. There were also images of broken bones and wings. Buonopane even showed the selection of “feather transplants” – recovered from birds who did not survive – that are used to mend injured birds’ wings and help them on the way to recovery and release.

The hospital can always use help, especially during baby bird season, when they need to feed the fledglings every 15 minutes. “Volunteers are needed all the time,” said Buonopane, “so if you can donate a day or even just an hour, we’re happy to have you.”

Those looking for some hot and fresh pizza, saucy wings, a cold drink and a little entertainment have just the island to hop on over to.

Located at Tradewinds Plaza, Island Key Largo Pizzeria and Sports Bar has plenty of options when it comes to pizza, wings, pasta and more. From the oven to the table, General Manager Melody Hannes says the pizzeria and sports bar has pizza for all the patrons’ likes with all sorts of toppings.

“We have pizza of all kinds for people,” Hannes said. “Made special to order, people can have the pizza they want in small, medium and large sizes.”

Those coming to Island Key Largo can start off with one of several appetizers on the menu.

Some of the featured options include the mac and cheese bites, which are deep fried mac and cheese balls that are crunchy on the outside and creamy inside. Patrons can also try fried pickle chips or the popular Island sticks.

“They’re bread sticks that are dipped into this cream cheese type of dressing,” Hannes said. “They’re nice and crunchy. It’s one of the most popular items, along with our wings.”

As for the chicken wings, patrons have various options to choose from, hot and mild to BBQ. Wings come in six, 12, 18 and 24 pieces.

There are also cheesesteaks, pastas like baked ziti and spaghetti marinara, calzones stuffed with mozzarella and ricotta cheese and other toppings, house salads and sandwiches.

“We have great pasta dishes, salads and wraps,” Hannes said. “We’ll be expanding our menu to include more items.”

Hannes said patrons coming into Island Key Largo Pizzeria and Sports Bar can expect a fun-filled atmosphere. Bring friends and have a good time playing pool or listening to some music on the jukebox. Or sit at the bar, have some drinks and watch sports on the many big screens. There’s also karaoke and live entertainment. Hannes said the pizzeria and sports bar is the hangout for locals and tourists.

“It’s a neighborhood bar and it’s a 'Cheers' atmosphere,” Hannes said.

“It’s a place where people can come, have some good food and drinks and enjoy themselves. We hope everybody comes in and loves it as much as we do.”

n Feb. 2, runners and walkers came out for a little run and a blast of paint. The Plantation Key School Parent Teachers Association held its fourth annual Family Paint Run/Walk 5K. Participants took off at MM 86 near Treasure Village Montessori and finished at MM 91 near Coral Shores High School.
