Council to mull artificial wreck for Marathon SARA MATTHIS

B

efore the discussions of which decommissioned ship, where to put it and how much the project will cost, the Marathon City Council must first decide whether to pursue a permit to install an artificial wreck off the coast of Marathon. Organizers envision something like the Vandenberg or the Spiegel Grove and say it can be both an economic and environmental boom to the Middle Keys.

“The council will need to agree, or disagree, to sponsor the permit,” said City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

The permit involves multiple agencies, not the least of which is the National Marine Sanctuary, as well as approvals at the state level.

“This isn’t like making a peanut butter sandwich,” said Joe Weatherby, who will present to the council at the meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12. “There’s a lot of moving parts.”

Weatherby represents Artificial Reefs International of Key West and CRB Geological and Environmental

Services of Miami. He was instrumental in the sinking of the Vandenberg in 2009.

If the Marathon Council votes yes, that’s a green light to delve more deeply into the proposed project.

“The most important aspects are the cost of the project, and the economic advantages, as well as the environmental impact,” Lindsey said, adding that the feedback so far has been positive. Artificial reefs are often touted for their ability to reduce pressure on natural reefs, attracting divers away from a sensitive part of the environment. “We just need to figure out all the details.”

The Vandenberg was sunk a decade ago at a cost of almost $9 million.

Most of that went to stripping the decommissioned ship of every possible toxin, including oil and even wiring. At 523 feet long, it became the biggest artificial reef in the Keys, or 13 feet longer than the Spiegel Grove, sunk in 2002 at a cost of $1.25 million.

Proponents of wrecks say the attractions bring business … big business. At the time the Vandenberg was sunk, organizers expected to recoup almost the entire cost in one year with extra dive trips and other infusions into the economy, such as lodging.

According to information presented at the 2015 Florida Artificial Reef Summit, that calculated both fishing and diving revenue, the artificial reefs provide

40,000 jobs, add $1.3 billion to Floridians’ pocketbooks, and provide $250 million in state revenue. In the report, the Keys are lumped into the Southeast region (the most popular) that accounts for almost 12,000 jobs, and $457 million in income.

Andy Newman of the Tourist Development Council said a new shipwreck would augment what’s known as the “shipwreck trail.” The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary lists nine in the Keys.

There are about 2,700 artificial reefs in Florida – with another 70 to 100 added every year. An artificial reef can be anything from a decommissioned ship to a pile of boulders.

I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I’m happy to report that we had few reports of thefts over the holidays. Though we did take some reports, the number of instances were few and for that, I give credit where it’s due: To all of you. You locked your doors, monitored your mail and helped out by keeping an eye on your neighbor’s home or their boat while they were away. It’s that sort of community mindset that makes for safer neighborhoods. Which brings me to my next point: Crime continues to drop in Monroe County!

I’m very happy to see our annual crime statistics showed an impressive decrease in crime and an increase in the clearance rate for the 2018 calendar year. Specifically, overall crime is down by 16.3 percent. Two of the biggest drops were aggravated assault — which dropped from 160 in 2017 to 137 in 2018 — and larceny. There were 817 reported larcenies in 2017 and 689 in 2018.

That figure jumped to 38.6 percent for 2018. The state average for clearance rates was about 23.4 percent for 2017, so our clearance rate is significantly higher than the 2017 state average.

I want to personally thank the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office for working so tirelessly. Life in law enforcement can be a tough assignment, but I know our people take a lot of pride in solving burglaries, returning stolen goods and making this community safer in general. To them, we all owe a big, “Thank you!”

It is my continued belief that our policy which makes community policing our guiding philosophy is having an impact on crime. I know I say it all the time, but it’s true — we can’t do it alone. These improved figures are not only a testament to the hark work put in the men and women of the Sheriff’s Offices, but to all of you — the businesses, community watch leaders and residents who extend us a helping hand.

Vince Neil ready to rock the Keys

e’s the antidote for snowflakes. Vince Neil, lead singer of Mötley Crüe, is a hardcore, down and dirty rock 'n’ roller, who delivers that soul-pounding sound that feels so good. He’s got a jaw-dropping past and a hidden sweet spot for his “Crüe” that keeps him loud and proud of his music. Headlining Coral Head Music Festival on Sunday, Feb. 17, Neil plays the hits off his solo albums “Exposed” and “Tattoos & Tequila," as well as others, and of course, some classic Mötley Crüe.

“I heard it was the Keys and I knew it would be killer,” said Neil, talking like a seasoned rock star. It's not his first Keys visit; Neil hosted the “Motley Cruise,” which stopped in Key West back in 2008. The Keys rule in his book.

Neil joined Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx to form Mötley Crüe almost four decades ago, in 1981.

“I’ve done it all my life," he said. "I love it, it’s a great job.”

The band forged its way through a sea of excellent heavy metal and hard rock bands like Def Leppard, Van Halen, and Poison and came out on top with hits like “Theatre of Pain” “Girls, Girls, Girls," “Home Sweet Home” and “Dr. Feelgood." Their music defined sex, drugs, and rock 'n’ roll both onstage and off. Each member of the band made headlines with wild parties, brushes with the law and skirting death.

But he isn’t all music. Neil’s a huge football fan, but wouldn’t say his Super Bowl pick so as not to offend anyone.

But “Kickstart My Heart” was featured in a Mr. Peanut ad, making Neil happy to be at least a part of Super Bowl. Also an entrepreneur, he has businesses in the tattoo industry, a winery, tequila brand and restaurants called Dr. Feelgood, among many ventures. “I like doing all those things because then I can give back. That’s what really makes a difference.” Neil donates heavily to charities around the country and has a soft spot for helping others.

But it always comes back to the music. “I promise, everyone’s gonna know every word to every song,” said Neil. “I love concerts, and I promise a high energy show.”

A rock star is always a rock star and a stage, as Neil sings, is always “Home Sweet Home."

Puto says thanks for 'overwhelming' support The support I have received from the Marathon community and Monroe County following my recent surgery and continuing recovery has been wonderfully overwhelming and very humbling.The local health care professionals, the staff at Fishermen's Community Hospital and my friends throughout Marathon — and indeed, the Keys — have all contributed to my recovery. Not a day passes without the clear recognition that we truly are a family — people who care for and look out for each other in times of need.

I did not fully realize the seriousness of my condition until the surgeon in his post-operative review described

what he found — and fixed — during the surgical procedure. The quality of the care I received throughout my time at the Baptist Medical Center was outstanding, and all of us in Monroe County are truly fortunate to have such an impressive health care resource in our county.

To all my friends, all of whom have so generously and caringly reached out to help me get back into my normal life and activities, I say: "Thank you from the depth of my heart!"

he steamboat Columbia, moored at Marathon’s Tail Track Dock, is said to have been the site of Marathon’s first gambling raid by deputy sheriffs, on Feb. 5, 1911. Those arrested were taken to Key West, where they stood before Judge E.R. “Doc” Lowe.

Edward R. “Doc” Lowe was introduced to the Florida Keys during the early construction years of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad. He was employed to head the medical station for railroad workers in the Key Vaca area.

Lowe is said to have become one of three U.S. deputy marshals in the State of Florida.

By 1928, “Doc” Lowe was operating a fishing club in Tavernier. In 1935, he would survive the Labor Day Hurricane. According to a story in The Miami News dated Sept. 4, “In one corner, huddled in stark fear were Mr. and Mrs. Doc Lowe, their son and daughter-in-law and the latter’s nine-monthold baby. They were too frightened to talk at first. Doc was wounded in the head, maybe seriously. But they finally told us of the four of them taking turns holding the baby and clinging to a tree for four hours.”

his is one of those atypical typical Florida Keys stories about how two women, former human resource executives for a large company in Arkansas, came to own and operate one of the largest roofing companies in the Florida Keys — Keys All Area Roofing.

Dion Watson and Deborah Shirley met in 1989 and moved to the Keys in 2006. Dion started work at a local marina, and Deborah took a job in aviation service.

“But I could read the handwriting on the wall, and this marina wasn’t doing too great,” said Dion. One of her boat-owning clients approached her with a strange job offer.

“He said ‘Let’s open a roofing office in the Keys.’ This friend already had one office in Tampa, and another one run by his daughter in Fort Pierce. I thought about it four months and then called him back and asked if it was a serious offer,” said Dion.

Dion said she warned her friend she wasn’t even good with a hammer and he told her not to worry, that it was easy.

“That was a lie,” Dion said.

“She went out and bought a hammer, a ladder and a measuring tape. I laughed,” said her partner, Deborah.

It’s no joke. Keys All Area Roofing has two offices-slash-warehouses: one in Marathon and one on Stock Island.

“I went down to Key West to buy the phone number for Tony’s Roofing that was closing,” Dion said.

“I didn’t hear from her four hours, and I got this bad feeling. I called her and asked, ‘What have you done?’” Deb recalled.

“All I wanted was the phone number, and I ended up buying the whole company including materials. Deb asked me where I was going to put all that, and I said, ‘I don’t know. Now I gotta buy a building,” Dion said.

Before the storm, Keys All Area Roofing had five employees and a solid stream of commercial and residential work. After the storm, the crew swelled to 70. That’s when Deb joined the business.

“We were driving back from Kissimmee a couple days after Hurricane Irma and the phone started ringing. I started taking messages on scraps of paper in the truck. By the time we got back to Marathon, we had 400 calls,” said Deb. By the way, all but one of the Keys All Area Roofing roofs came through the storm with flying colors. Dion said she thinks that one was compromised when a structural element on the roof was ripped off, most likely by a pocket tornado.

Before Irma, the company had completed about 500 roofs and repairs. In the months since, it’s done a whopping 372. Both agree that, so far, their favorite job was the First Congregational Church in Key West on Williams Street. The tall turrets required an 80-foot lift to replace the architectural metal shingles with a fish hook design.

“We are really blessed to work with a talented team,” Dion said.

BRIEFLY No overflow boat trailers; violators will be towed From now until June there will be no overflow boat trailer and pick up parking (from the 33rd Street ramp) in the Stanley Switlik Elementary School parking lot.

Extra staging area is needed by the construction company rebuilding the school. Violators will be towed. However, by the end of this month there will be a temporary parking lot on the site of the former Marathon Jaycees Building across the street.

Boaters should take note of the limited parking available at the 33rd Street ramp and make adjustments.

… how many planes land/take-off in Marathon?

. J. Henderson, the assistant director of Marathon and Key West International airports explains: All in all, there are about 75,000 operations — that includes take-offs or landings — per year. These include helicopters such as Trauma Star, Mosquito Control and lots of sightseeing helicopters.

That makes it a pretty busy general aviation airport.

The runway of Marathon Airport is 5,008 feet long and 100 feet wide. There are 400-foot paved overruns at each end if someone needed extra space to slow down while landing during an emergency.

Most aircraft that land here are smaller propeller engine planes, but we also have a lot of corporate jets, such as Gulfstreams and Global Express aircraft, which are privately owned or chartered. We also have some military aircraft here for training purposes.

Marathon has had several air carrier services from quite a few airlines over the years. The latest was by Cape Air from Fort Myers and it stopped in 2011. Delta from Atlanta was discontinued in 2007. Our plan is to resume the air carrier service dependent on demand and the airline industry.

There are a few stopovers by the planes returning from the Caribbean, South and Central America. Our Customs and Border Protection facilities aren’t as crowded and are, hence, customer-friendly.

Our Marathon Airport is still a couple of years from getting back to normal after Hurricane Irma, as we sustained some damage. Many people may not realize that this airport was a focal point for the rescue and recovery operations after Irma — an “air bridge” — and we had a large military presence for two weeks.

Monroe County operates the two publicly owned airports in the Keys — Marathon and Key West. There are several private airfields in the Keys: Sugarloaf, Summerland, Tavernier and Ocean Reef. The Naval Air Station is at Boca Chica and their magnificent air show featuring the Blue Angels is coming up at the end of March.

My name is Thomas Justin Henderson and I’m originally from Indianapolis, Indiana. I got my B.S. in Aviation Management from Auburn University in Alabama and Master’s of Business Administration from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Before coming to the Keys, I worked at John Wayne Airport, also in California.

Sunset concerts resume in KCB

The free Concerts in the Park series starts this Sunday, Feb. 10 with John Bartus. These weekly concerts are held in Sunset Park (west end of Ocean Drive, Key Colony Beach), from 4 to 6 p.m. most Sundays through March.

Bring a lawn chair, sit back and enjoy the music. Parking is limited so please ride share, bike or walk to the park. The concerts are sponsored by the KCB Community Association.

Wildlife refuge hosts photo club The Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Photography Club meets monthly and is open to everyone who wants to explore the natural areas of the Florida Keys looking for great photography opportunities and stories to share. Bring three to five photos to share, including your macro photos.

Kids invited to explore National Key Deer Refuge The National Key Deer Refuge is initiating a series of free, kid-friendly, nature-oriented programs on Saturday mornings (from Feb. 16 until March 23) on Big Pine Key.

The 2019 Rockin’ Refuge Rangers events are open to all children in grades K-8 who are accompanied by a parent or guardian. This year’s theme is careers in biology and wildlife management. The programs will run from 9:45 a.m. to noon and will have an indoor and outdoor (field trip) component.

Wear clothes that can get wet or muddy, wear sun protection and bring along some water in a reusable bottle.

The meetings start at the new refuge Nature Center, at 30587 Overseas Highway.

Pre-registration is required for these programs to ensure there is enough supplies for all participants.

udience members will be treated to a rendition of “21 Guns” from “American Idiot, the musical” in the opening act of the annual talent show at Marathon Middle High School.

“It’s the Broadway musical version featuring six of us,” said Jay Walters, who has a part in that song, as well as a solo later on in the show — a new take on Smash Mouth’s song “Allstar.”

The AVID Talent show is set for Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Other acts to watch for: Paige Richard is a dancer and will be moving to “I Wouldn’t Say I’m in Love” from Disney’s “Hercules.” Richard’s inspiration for performance came from her mom’s dance studio where they are dancing “Around The World.” Megan Gross has played ukulele for two years and is ready to show off her skills as well as her singing voice. Chloe Migut and Ella Dunn are turning “Without Me” from Halsey into a duet. Migut said their version of the song is about a fight between two best friends and Dunn chimed in, saying,“We chose ‘Without Me’ because we wanted to sing something but we wanted to be more lifelike, so we added some drama to it.”

Proceeds from the show support the AVID program and get students to the mainland to look at colleges. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) guides local students to the college of their dreams. The students are often first-generation Americans and are going to be the first in their family to go to college in the U.S. More than 6,400 schools across the country are a part of the program, which serves almost 2 million students — and 95 percent of those students are successfully enrolled in college. AVID is a nonprofit that trains 70,000 educators every year.

“AVID helps students learn how to be successful in school so that they are prepared for college and their career once they graduate,” Buhyoff said. “We work on skills that help them advocate for themselves and know what their strengths are and what their weaknesses are so they can get better.” The program benefits the whole community in unexpected ways. For example, a student from the first AVID class at Marathon High is now a teacher at Stanley Switlik Elementary.

If Marathon had a signature “taste” this would be it: mahi-mahi char-grilled with jerk seasoning, served over coconut rice with black beans and mango salsa.

unset Grille and Raw Bar isn’t “just” a restaurant. That isn’t what John Kotch set out to create nine years ago — he wanted a package, an experience. And that’s what guests get — paradise realized, what they were dreaming of, sitting in snowbound homes in the frozen north.

“Visitors ask, ‘Where can I go to see the sunset?’ Kotch said. “And locals direct them here.”

But it isn’t just sunset — there’s the “beach” with cornhole and lounge chairs. There are special parties two or three times a week, whether it’s Sunday Funday, or football, or large-gathering events; think DJs and contests and promotional booze giveaways. There’s an 18-foot-wide screen for movie night. There’s the dock for hungry boaters ready to disembark and eat after a day on the water.

There’s an extra sea-level tiki bar and seating area. And there’s an extra amenity unique to Sunset Grille which is open to every guest whether they are ordering a mojito or blue crab mac and cheese.

“People walk in here and stop to look at it: ‘There’s a pool?’" said Kotch, smiling as he recounts the astounded reaction of visitors. And, yes, that’s cool, but what makes this restaurant unique is the location — in the shadow of the iconic 7 Mile Bridge. “I never wanted to create a place that was just about coming to eat. This is not about dine and dash. This is an experience.”

The restaurant is hard to miss.

The huge tiki structure dominates the tiny island of Knights Key just west of “downtown” Marathon. It features a main, raised dining area, and then the pool deck and a handful of slips for diners who come by boat. Colorful umbrellas compete with the blue ocean views for prominence.

Kotch estimates that the number of guests through the door — for breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner — can swell to 1,000 a day. That’s word of mouth, plus blurbs in “Coastal Living” and airplane travel magazines.

While the shout-outs are nice, what satisfies Kotch the most is the restaurant’s connection with Marathon — hosting big dinners for everyone from political candidates to graduating high school seniors or just a group of neighbors who want a night out.

“This is a year-round place,” he said. And, why not? The weather is always fine and the sunset happens once a day.

Kotch owns two other restaurants in North Carolina, and came to the industry after an obsession with baseball and a three-year stint bartending in the islands. He started small, but with a bang, in a shopping plaza before acquiring a 700-seat restaurant. He has established a strong bond with his employees, 100 just in Marathon, who stick with him through the highs and lows (Hurricane Irma).

“Retaining the core group of employees is important; it’s how we maintain consistency which is very important to me,” he said, leaning against the rail at the Marathon restaurant wearing a backwards Costa visor, titanium necklace, and a pair of board shorts. “We’re blessed.”

P

hotographer Andreas Franke has been creating exhibits around the world that also raise environmental awareness.

Most recently, his “Plastic Ocean” has garnered attention for its unblinking look at waste in our oceans and on shorelines.

Franke came to the Keys 30 years ago and began diving, and eventually, he dove The Vandenberg. The Vandenberg boasts a 500-plus foot artificial reef, the second largest in the world, home to a diverse ecosystem of marine life.

Franke has done shipwreck dives around the world, from Key West to Croatia. He tells the origin story of his idea for his unconventional photo exhibit, “The Sinking World”: “I was diving in Egypt, and I was there, on an old dive boat, and there was a magazine about the sinking of the Vandenberg.” The serendipitous experience brought Franke back to the Keys, where he pursued a vision of not only photographing the ship, but also displaying the images on the ship, in the first-ever underwater exhibit on a shipwreck. His mission to get permission for the exhibit — which took many months, emails, and heavy-duty magnets — led him to Joe Weatherby, the man behind the sinking of the Vandenberg.

Weatherby helped him see a new perspective of the shipwreck. “For me as an artist," he said, "it starts with thinking about why do we do this: sink ships and bring them to a place in the ocean where normally they should not be?

“Mrs. Smith,” displayed on the Vandenberg.

“But when you come down, you see thousands and thousands of fish, and normally there would only be sand down there,” he said. “It’s amazing. It’s a big home for all of them.” Franke affixed his photographs to the ship with 200-pound magnets for divers to view.

After several months, the byproduct was the growth of oceanic micro-organisms over the photographs, which yielded art that was part human creation, part environmental.

Franke played with the juxtaposition of humanity and technology in nature in “The Sinking World.” In “Plastic Ocean,” he puts beautiful models in water amid garbage—in this case, loads of plastic he and his team collected along an Italian shoreline.

“It took four people one hour to fill 10 huge bags— and we could have done it in 30 minutes,” he said.

One thing that struck Franke was the inevitability of micro-plastics. “You think things are stable," he said, "and you pick them up, and they break into small pieces. ... The world is so unbelievably full of plastic, and it’s been in a really short time.

Mankind did not think, we just produced.”

This destruction inspired Franke, and he believes that images can create an impression that words may not. “Fish eat it, the turtles do, the whales do," he said.

"But it’s not just them: we kill ourselves, too.”

Franke is planning a new photography project for the Keys to debut this spring or summer. He said it will be “even stronger” than Plastic Ocean, in hopes that his photography can serve to spark activism and awareness. “I feel that art can open you up. … If you see something beautifully done, your brain opens more and more.”

Perhaps if people are not listening to the message of plastic harming our oceans, artists like Franke can help them see it.

35 YEARS AND COUNTING Celebrating 3.5 decades on this little rock

I

n 1984, the Apple Macintosh made its debut in a Super Bowl ad directed by Ridley Scott that looked like a mega-budget Hollywood blockbuster. Ronald Reagan was campaigning to be re-elected President of these United States. Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire while filming a Pepsi commercial. Vanessa Williams resigned as Miss America when nude photos of her appeared in Penthouse magazine (she was saving the best for last). “Footloose,” “Purple Rain,” “Against All Odds” and “Ghostbusters” were all both hit songs and hit movies.

The Los Angeles Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins at Super Bowl XVII. The Chicago Bulls chose Michael Jordan in the first round of the NBA draft.

Richard Petty won his 200th NASCAR race, and LeBron James was born.

In February of that year, a young musician played his first Keys gig at the Compass Lounge at the old Holiday Inn in Marathon. The Compass Lounge was a fixture on the Marathon nightlife scene. Happy hour had an assortment of Keys characters, drawn in by the complimentary buffet and the Wooden Nickels.

I had driven all day and night to get us to our first gig in Marathon, and after a tiny amount of sleep, got down to the business of setting up and playing — while feverish from a case of the flu. All I could think about was getting through the gig, and then getting a bite to eat before crashing in my room.

In 1984, the Hampton Inn site was the Howard Johnson’s Hotel and Restaurant. It was open 24 hours, and I dragged my influenza-infected self over and was seated in a booth. My short time as the only diner in the joint was shattered by the arrival of a happily intoxicated couple. The waitress seated them in the booth right behind mine.

Back then, having been on the road in the real world for a couple of years, I knew nothing about Keys fashion and style. That particular night, I was dressed in a purple shirt, skinny necktie, and black pants

and shoes — typical 1980s performance attire.

So there I was, purple shirt and skinny tie, shivering with a JOHN fever — when BARTUS the waitress delivering is the mayor of the couple’s the City of Marathon. In the months and years since, working solo or with an amazing assortment of other fine musicians, the Perpetual Island Tour was born. Throughout the past 35 years, I’ve performed at nearly every venue in the Keys at one time or another. I have shared the stage with insanely talented people like Adrienne Z, Steven Miller, Terry Cassidy, Clarence Clemons, Freddie Bye, Glenn Faast, Rob Garza, and far too many others to mention. I still enjoy taking the stage armed with nothing but a good acoustic guitar. I love rocking out on my Stratocaster with a great band.

And nearly 8,000 performances later, there’s nothing I’d rather be doing than playing music to an appreciative audience.

On that note (pun definitely intended), I’d like to invite you to my 35th Anniversary Concert this Sunday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m. at Sunset Park in Key Colony Beach.

The Key Colony Beach Community Association (www.kcbca.org) has invited me again to kick off its Concerts In The Park series, and I am honored to do so. I’ll be performing songs from my “Keys Disease” and “Live From The Florida Keys CDs,” new originals, crowd favorites, and I’ll also play my song for Key Colony Beach, “What’s Your Hurry? You’re Here!”

This concert is a special thank you to all the people I’ve been lucky enough to play music for in these islands the past 35 years.

I hope to see you there … and I promise, it will be more fun than a chocolate milk bath!

More than 140 players visited six spots — The Island, Sparky's Landing, Causeway Pizza, Key Colony Inn, Havana Jack's and the Cabana Club — to put together the best possible poker hand. The winner was Mike Alexander, who promptly donated his $200 winnings back to the cause du jour — the Florida Keys SPCA. PUTT 4 PAWS T Event raises funds for shelters

his Saturday, Feb. 9 is the fourth annual fundraiser for the Florida Keys SPCA at Boondocks Grille and Draft House at MM 27.5. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m.

The festivities will include a costume dog show, obstacle course (we hesitate to presume, but we think this is for the animals and not the humans), best trick competition, a little bit of shopping, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.

Locals are encouraged to form a team of two ($100) to compete in a mini-golf tournament. Teams tee-off at 12:30 p.m. and, again, there are prizes — best team costume, most spirited and worst golfers. The tournament winners walk away with a three-day, two-night stay at Faro Blanco Resort, plus dinner for two at the Lighthouse Grill, plus $150 in “walking-around money.”

Second- and third-place golfers will also receive cash prizes.

BRIEFLY No overflow boat trailers: violators will be towed From now until June there will be no overflow boat trailer and pick up parking (from the 33rd Street ramp) in the Stanley Switlik Elementary School parking lot.

Extra staging area is needed by the construction company rebuilding the school. Violators will be towed. However, by the end of this month there will be a temporary parking lot on the site of the former Marathon Jaycees Building across the street.

Boaters should take note of the limited parking available at the 33rd Street ramp and make adjustments.

oris Roussel has called the Keys home since 1970, but is a recent addition to Shady Palm Art Gallery and Photography in Marathon. Her family came to visit from Canada when Doris was 10, and during that visit her parents decided they were going to stay in the Keys, where it’s “beach day every day.” She has been working on her ceramic art for a couple years. Each ceramic piece in the Orchid House, her brand, is unique, and shows a keen attention to detail, which keeps each piece looking natural and organic.

peutic. Now, her art includes bowls, wind chimes, bird feeders, jewelry, jewelry holders, and wall and table decorations. Many could be displayed both indoors and outdoors.

Some of the most eye-catching pieces are the delicate flowers Roussel recreates in her pieces. The beautiful passion flowers are surrounded by colorful butterflies, which she explained is one of the important roles of these tiny wild flowers.

“People don’t notice what wildflowers grow here; you have to look closely for passion flowers and orchids,” she

said, and explained that not only are they lovely, but also important as a butterfly flower.

The orchids in particular are deeply meaningful to Roussel, as they were something that she and her daughter both loved. Following the passing of Roussel's son and daughter, these orchids are “a good memory,” she said.

The delicate detail of each individual flower shows the thought and love that go into this craft.

Roussel said one of her greatest inspirations is Georgina Hosek, a fellow artist displayed at Shady Palm, who

also creates art expressing the bright colors and unique nature of the Keys.

Before each piece is started, Roussel said she sees something in the clay and just makes it from there. “Making pieces is fun," she said. "I don’t plan when I make a piece, I let the clay make the piece.”

This lets the organic and natural details of her pieces shine, from small nicks in the edge of a banana leaf to the indentation marks of a local fern. One piece combines the broad leaf of a sea grape with the fine detail of a sea grape flower, which illustrates beautifully her concept of “take nature, and play with it.” Roussel knows her local plants, and has been helping people in the plant section of Home Depot in Marathon.

For her next work she plans to make pots for plants. Roussel and her work can be found at the Shady Palm. “Every artist has their own take on art and life,” says Roussel about Shady Palm. “Everyone can come in and enjoy.” Shady Palm is located at 2888 Overseas Hwy. Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball aims to help hospital rebuilding efforts

L

ike so many businesses in the Keys, it has been a long road to recovery for Fishermen’s Community Hospital. The Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball takes aim at aiding this cause and providing a night of well-mannered New Orleans-themed frivolity.

Taking place on Saturday, March 2 from 6 to 9 p.m., the event will spill over from the Royal Furniture showroom into a large tent rented for the evening.

A $125 ticket gives entrance to the event, an open bar, a Cajun meal prepared by the Elwell family, New Orleans jazz-style music, and the opportunity to bid on live and silent auction items.

The auction features the work of two talented artists — Caleb Goins, a former Marathon resident, and Jason Robinson, who lives on Grassy Key. Both are worth a sneak peek.

Many locals will recognize the precision-crafted aluminum sculptures donated by Goins. (Locals have seen his pieces at Brutus Seafood and at Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House.) Goins specializes in bringing aquatic scenes to life through highly realistic freehand drawings cut into sheets of aluminum.

Goins’ father introduced him to this art form 17 years ago. From there,

as he described, he took his passion for art and honed his skills as his drawing abilities progressed. Today, his pieces are drawn entirely freehand before being carved into an aluminum sheet with a plasma torch. “It’s all Caleb Goins based around steady hand movement and concentration,” Goins said. “It’s basically like drawing with fire.” Once the cutting process is complete, Caleb brings the work to life by grinding and polishing surfaces to give the finished piece a three-dimensional appearance.

Goins has pledged to donate both a mermaid piece and a bull mahi scene. “I don’t live in the Keys any more, but it’s still a community I very much love and respect," he said. "When people come together to rebuild a hospital, that’s something pretty amazing. I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Attendees also will be able to bid on a specially commissioned piece by Jason Robinson of Fish Tales Wood Creations.

Marathon residents will most likely recognize Robinson's work from the large wooden fish on display at Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, or perhaps from

the pieces in several private homes around the island.

Robinson began experimenting with wood creations in high school, but put his art on hold for a short time due to a lack of space.

Robinson said his wooden fish created specifically for the gala auction will feature his work’s signature element: a cartoon style with exaggerated features. The Fins defense held the Bulldogs to just five points for the game. “We had a long week of basketball against a few tough teams,” said Marathon Coach Teresa Konrath. “I am glad to close the season with every player getting some playing time. We are looking forward to Friday’s game here at home; we’re reigning champs and know that it will a tough game.” Friday’s game is also Senior Night for the girls, where graduating team members are recognized.

Competition challenges high schoolers

T

here’s great news on the financial horizon: high schoolers from the Upper Keys all the way to Key West are eligible to enter Florida Keys Credit Union’s “Financial Fitness Challenge,” winning up to $5,000 and learning plenty in the process.

While more than half of the states don’t require high school students to take an economics course, Florida does. Keys Federal Credit Union has teamed up with the League of Southeastern Credit Unions and made a serious commitment to ensuring that Keys kids don’t fall behind on finances.

The kicker? It’s fun!

KFCU, the Monroe County School District, and local businesses will create and sponsor student teams of two to three to compete in the educational tournament. It’s through a program created by Visa and the National Football League, called “financial football.”

The interface is sophisticated and engaging, like any video game, and students can play as one of their favorite stars from the NFL. Each correctly answered financial literacy question results in yards gained. The topics span budgeting, identity theft, debt, credit, financial institutions, and life events. Anyone can play the game online at www.financialfootball.com (I already learned a thing or two), but only Keys high school students can compete in the Financial Fitness Tournament.

While last year, it was only a Key West event, it’s now inclusive to all high school students in the Keys. “They’ll compete at their area level, and then there is a competition to crown a Keys champion," said Sarah Evans, marketing coordinator at FKCU, "then they’ll compete at a state level, and then the league will handle state and regional levels.” The prize is $1,500 for each

FKCU is also encouraging adults and businesses to get involved through local sponsorship of their teams — the entry fee is $250 per team. They are hoping for as many entries as possible, to make for a healthy competition and more learning opportunities for the players.

The closing date for entries is Feb. 17, and the tournament is running through March. There are events pages on FKCU’s website, as well as Facebook.

It’s not just about the short-term goal of prizewinnings. Says Evans: “It’s about understanding the value of the money as well … It encourages them to play a little bit more, and it’s non-traditional learning. It’s real world financial fitness, and how to be savvy financially.”

FKCU CEO Maggie Sayer has been behind the effort since its inception.

Said Sayer, “We are excited to partner with both the businesses in our communities and the League of Southeast Credit Unions to provide a fun, educational competition for Keys high school students. By helping educate and inform our local students about money management and personal finance, we hope to help produce future financially literate members of our communities.”

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS CITY OF KEY COLONY BEACH, FL Public ADA Restrooms at Sunset Park The City of Key Colony Beach is accepting competitive proposals from qualified companies to provide either modular or built-in-place ADA accessible restrooms for a park facility. The City, at its sole discretion, will decide which option is best overall for the City.

The intent of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to obtain sealed proposals from qualified and experienced companies who are interested in assisting the City of Key Colony Beach in building the restroom facility in full compliance with all applicable local, State, and Federal laws and regulations.

he weather was perfect for the annual art show at Marathon Community Park this past weekend. With more than 50 vendors, visitors and locals arrived to admire the handiwork of artists from all over the state and country. From leather goods to paintings to beautiful bits of glasswork, there was truly something for everyone. Proceeds from the benefit support the Pigeon Key Art Festival.
