he demonstrators outside City Hall supporting a sunscreen ordinance were rewarded when the commission voted 6-1 on Feb. 5. in favor of the ordinance, banning sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.

The vote took place at 10:41 p.m., and the hour was a concern espoused by Mayor Teri Johnston at the opening of the meeting.

Johnston proposed a resolution for future commission meetings to begin at 5 p.m. and conclude no later than 10 p.m. When queried for her reasoning, the mayor replied: “I’m old.” The commission voted in agreement.

The commission discussed Commissioner Sam Kaufman’s resolution for the Sustainability Board to report on the “efficacy

of sunscreens that do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate and other factors affecting the coral reef.” Kaufman cited “inaccurate reporting” from local media outlets and clarified, “It’s not to delay, it’s to do what we can to protect the reef, and consider the future of it.” He expressed a desire to have the full scope of information to better “advocate to state and federal authorities” on the matter.

Sustainability Advisory Board Chair Monica Haskell said, “I hope you heed the advice of the advisory board, to go ahead with what we voted unanimously for.”

Commissioner Clayton Lopez suggested the Sustainability Board also consider other water contaminants, like runoff from Mount Trashmore, in their report.

He and Commissioner Jimmy Weekley expressed concern about the heavy load on the

Sustainability Board and supported lifting the Feb. 5, 2020 deadline on Kaufman’s resolution. Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover said, “There is money with Rep. Raschein at the state level, so maybe that’s a place we need to go and do it in conjunction with The Clean Water Act.” All voted in favor of the resolution “Supporting Florida Senate Bill 88, which would repeal current state preemptions of local law relating to the regulation of polystyrene products, plastic bags, wrappings and containers.”

In other words, the city is moving toward a ban on single-use plastic bags.

Keys photographer captures environmental crisis SARAH THOMAS

P

hotographer Andreas Franke has been creating exhibits around the world that also raise environmental awareness.

Most recently, his “Plastic Ocean” has garnered attention for its unblinking look at waste in our oceans and on shorelines.

Franke came to the Keys 30 years ago and began diving, and eventually, he dove The Vandenberg. The Vandenberg boasts a 500-plus foot artificial reef, the second largest in the world, home to a diverse ecosystem of marine life.

Franke has done shipwreck dives around the world, from Key West to Croatia. He tells the origin story of his idea for his unconventional photo exhibit, “The Sinking World”: “I was diving in Egypt, and I was there, on an old dive boat, and there was a magazine about the sinking of the Vandenberg.” The serendipitous experience brought Franke back to the Keys, where he pursued a vision of not only photographing the ship, but also displaying the images on the ship, in the first-ever underwater exhibit on a shipwreck. His mission to get permission for the exhibit — which took many months, emails, and heavy-duty magnets — led him to Joe Weatherby, the man behind the sinking of the Vandenberg.

Weatherby helped him see a new perspective of the shipwreck. “For me as an artist," he said, "it starts with thinking about why do we do this: sink ships and bring them to a place in the ocean where normally they should not be?

“Mrs. Smith,” displayed on the Vandenberg.

“But when you come down, you see thousands and thousands of fish, and normally there would only be sand down there,” he said. “It’s amazing. It’s a big home for all of them.” Franke affixed his photographs to the ship with 200-pound magnets for divers to view.

After several months, the byproduct was the growth of oceanic micro-organisms over the photographs, which yielded art that was part human creation, part environmental.

Franke played with the juxtaposition of humanity and technology in nature in “The Sinking World.” In “Plastic Ocean,” he puts beautiful models in water amid garbage—in this case, loads of plastic he and his team collected along an Italian shoreline.

“It took four people one hour to fill 10 huge bags— and we could have done it in 30 minutes,” he said.

One thing that struck Franke was the inevitability of micro-plastics. “You think things are stable," he said, "and you pick them up, and they break into small pieces. ... The world is so unbelievably full of plastic, and it’s been in a really short time.

Mankind did not think, we just produced.”

This destruction inspired Franke, and he believes that images can create an impression that words may not. “Fish eat it, the turtles do, the whales do," he said.

"But it’s not just them: we kill ourselves, too.”

Franke is planning a new photography project for the Keys to debut this spring or summer. He said it will be “even stronger” than Plastic Ocean, in hopes that his photography can serve to spark activism and awareness. “I feel that art can open you up. … If you see something beautifully done, your brain opens more and more.”

Perhaps if people are not listening to the message of plastic harming our oceans, artists like Franke can help them see it.

ccording to Rear Admiral Casper F. Goodrich, a piratical event involving the Emma Sophia occurred “in a small port formed by the Florida Isles and Martyr’s Reef.”

A first-hand account of the event penned by William Savage appeared in the Boston Daily Advertiser on Feb. 3, 1819.

Savage wrote, “Davis, the spokesman, drew his knife and swore, that every man should die, unless he found the money, and first he would hang the supercargo.

He called for a rope, which he had brought on board, fitted with a hangman’s noose, sent a man up the mizzen yard and rove it and brought the noose down — and one man held it, and another stood ready to hoist. Now, said Davis, tell me where is the money, where are your diamonds, or I will hang you this minute. In vain I repeated I had nothing more but my watch, which I offered and he refused.

Once more, said he, will you tell? I have nothing to tell, said I. On with the rope, said the villain, and hoist away. The fellow with the noose came towards me, and I sprang overboard. They took me up, after some time apparently insensible.

They took off all my cloaths (sic), and laid me on my back on deck, naked as I was born, except having a blanket thrown over me. Here I laid five hours without moving hand or foot. Meanwhile they robbed us of every thing of the least value.”

A NEW DUVAL CRAWL

PROMENADE PILOT APPROVED BY COMMISSION

O

n Friday, Feb. 15, Duval Street will be subject to a new trial: a promenade pilot program that will close the 500-700 blocks to motorized traffic. The City Commission voted 6-1 in favor of the pilot. The pilot proposes the closing of those central blocks to automobile traffic from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights from Feb. 15 to April 27. Restaurants and shops will be permitted to move tables and chairs out onto the sidewalk and street 17 feet from their storefronts (allowing a central lane for emergency vehicles). The vision of the program is to create a pedestrian “Duval Mall” that will encourage lingering foot traffic to portions of central Duval not exposed to cruise ship stops and mainstrem tourists attractions.

Carl Fischer, who moved to Key West from Denver, opened a restaurant on Duval last year, which ultimately closed.

Fischer decided to diagnose why the blocks of central Duval do not have the kind of draw that the “North and South brands” do. He is a driving force behind revitalizing Central Duval, using a means other municipalities have done successfully: a pilot. Fischer cites his native Denver’s 16th Street Mall and Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale as comparisons. Fischer also notes that “each city has its own flavor: Miami Beach is different from Fort Lauderdale, and Key West has its own quirky character, which is something special.”

Fischer is brainstorming ideas for the future, like partnering with non-profits for pet adoption fairs, outdoor films, and farmer’s markets. For now, though, the

goal is simply to bring more foot traffic and locals to the blocks, showcasing the shops and restaurants that already exist.

A Duval Street Committee, made up of community business leaders, has formed in support of the trial, but not all business owners see eye to eye.

“I’m against it,” said Mark Rossi, owner of the Rick’s complex as well as Sloppy Joe’s, and a business owner on Duval Street for 35 years. “It isn’t what Duval Street is about, and it’s not what Key West is about.” Rossi’s businesses have been subject to code restrictions on signs and outdoor seating in the past. “You just get tired of people telling you how to run your business,” he said. “I have spent my life on Duval Street.”

“Where’s the public restrooms and handicap accessible restrooms?” he asked. “I’m the one paying the freight on the bathrooms down here.”

Lower Duval has historically had its fair share of foot traffic, as well as consistent landmarks — like Sloppy Joe’s — and seemingly less turnover than its central Duval neighbors. Rossi said of store performance: “It’s many different issues, it’s the amount of stores, and what’s going on those blocks.” Rossi also asked: “Who is going to pay to put the barricades up and put the barricades down? The taxpayer will.”

Jack Dingeman, director of operations and co-owner of Mangoes with his father Daniel, is optimistic about the pilot. Mangoes, the corner mainstay at 700 Duval, has recently renovated and rolled out a new menu. Dingeman reflects on the party atmosphere and foot traffic of lower Duval and says, “I’ve always wanted to see more of that personality toward the center of Duval Street — you see more people on the curb having a beer, and the party’s on the sidewalk.”

In a recent visit with his mother, Dingeman describes touring lower Duval on foot. “It’s the energy and the vibe — this is Key West. I like that energy.” He also describes observing interactions between vehicles and tourists, “People honk at the tourists, and tourists yell back.” Closing traffic on weekend nights would allow pedestrians to wander unfettered. He also sees it as being good for locals.

“It would be a safe haven on the weekends, because the locals can go down and enjoy it or avoid it. I think it’s a good quality-of-life boost and economic boost for the community. And we’re thrilled.” He said, “In the 700 block, we refer to it as the heart of Duval Street.”

Mayor Teri Johnston, who voted for the pilot program, is also encouraged.

While some store owners bring up disrupting the tradition of “cruising down Duval,” Johnston asks: “Do they stop and buy things?” She cites municipalities like St. Augustine and Nantucket that have popular downtown pedestrian malls. “What we are doing is no more than a special event over these weekends,” Johnston said.

“And we don’t have out of town vendors blocking local (storefronts). Here, we have local vendors as the recipients. It’s a great opportunity.”

The first evening that the 500-700 blocks will be closed is Friday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.

efore the discussions of which decommissioned ship, where to put it and how much the project will cost, the Marathon City Council must first decide whether to pursue a permit to install an artificial wreck off the coast of Marathon. Organizers envision something like the Vandenberg or the Spiegel Grove and say it can be both an economic and environmental boon to the Middle Keys.

“The council will need to agree, or disagree, to sponsor the permit,” said City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

The permit involves multiple agencies, not the least of which is the National Marine Sanctuary, as well as approvals at the state level.

“This isn’t like making a peanut butter sandwich,” said Joe Weatherby, who will present to the council at the meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12. “There’s a lot of moving parts.”

Weatherby represents Artificial Reefs International of Key West and CRB Geological and Environmental Services of Miami. He was instrumental in the sinking of the Vandenberg in 2009.

If the Marathon Council votes yes, that’s a green light to delve more deeply into the proposed project.

“The most important aspects are the cost of the project, and the economic advantages, as well as the environmental impact,” Lindsey said, adding that the feedback so far has been positive. Artificial reefs are often touted for their ability to reduce pressure on natural reefs, attracting

divers away from a sensitive part of the environment. “We just need to figure out all the details.”

The Vandenberg was sunk a decade ago at a cost of almost $9 million. Most of that went to stripping the decommissioned ship of every possible toxin, including oil and even wiring. At 523 feet long, it became the biggest artificial reef in the Keys, or 13 feet longer than the Spiegel Grove, sunk in 2002 at a cost of $1.25 million.

Proponents of wrecks say the attractions bring business … big business. At the time the Vandenberg was sunk, organizers expected to recoup almost the entire cost in one year with extra dive trips and other infusions into the economy, such as lodging. According to information presented at the 2015 Florida Artificial Reef Summit, that calculated both fishing and diving revenue, the artificial reefs provide 40,000 jobs, add $1.3 billion to Floridians’ pocketbooks, and provide $250 million in state revenue. In the report, the Keys are lumped into the Southeast region (the most popular) that accounts for almost 12,000 jobs, and $457 million in income.

There are about 2,700 artificial reefs in Florida – with another 70 to 100 added every year. An artificial reef can be anything from a decommissioned ship to a pile of boulders.

Two parties, the Key West Carnival Corp, represented by Veronica Stafford, and the Bahama Village Community Coalition, represented by Anton and Glenwood Lopez, put in bids to take charge of organizing this year’s Goombay Festival. The words exchanged were heated.

Stafford said “Our community is being left behind. …

It’s diminishing and hurting.

We feel we can organize and bring it to the international level.”

Anton and Glenwood Lopez, both educators, who have been part of the organizational team for four of the past five years, offered their longtime service to the community as proof of fitness for the task. Glenwood Lopez said that “last year was by far the best” and asked to be approved for three years rather than one.

Kaufman expressed disappointment at the argument: “We are one human family … but one that does not always get along.” He suggested a motion that gave organization to both groups and let them “work it out, or do alternating years.” The commission discussed the difficulty of building momentum in alternating years. Johnston said, “I don’t know how to move forward with that kind of dissention in a community. … It is difficult to see you pitted against each other, saying the most nasty things.” Stafford said, “I’m not a trouble maker, I’m a party girl.” Kaufman suggested mediation.

Commissioner Gregory Davila said: “I consider it a local event, not a marketed event. We have enough of that with Fantasy Fest. With the intentions of the different groups … I’d go with the local’s group.” The motion to share the event or alternate failed. The commis-

sion voted to approve the Bahama Village Community Coalition, the group represented by the Lopezes, in a 5-2 vote, with Kaufman and Johnston dissenting.

Citizens spoke in support of and against the Duval Promenade Pilot Program, which would close the streets of the 500-700 blocks from 5 p.m. to midnight for 11 weekends (see page 8 for full story). Carl Fischer, organizer of the “Mall on Duval” effort, said “Having a pilot program is such a smart thing to do: we can make changes and be flexible so that it gets better immediately.”

Commissioner Billy Wardlow was the lone dissenter. He cited financial concerns. Wardlow said it would cost “$5,900 a night,” overall $123,200, and “we are only leaving $100,000 in the contingency fund.” Wardlow said, “It’s too much and businesses should pay for it.”

Weekly said: “We have to get locals back on Duval, and we have to try something more creative and meaningful to encourage them to come there.” The commission voted for the program 6-1.

The final item, the sunscreen ban, again garnered dozens of speakers: doctors, residents, parents and, predominantly, representatives from Reef Relief, who showed solidarity in coral shirts. Reef Relief representatives cited the chemicals as “known toxins” and called the ban “a moral obligation” that has been supported by “scientists around the world.” The commission agreed, voting in favor of the oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreen ban 6-1, with Davila opposed.

Competition challenges high schoolers

T

here’s great news on the financial horizon: high schoolers from the Upper Keys all the way to Key West are eligible to enter Florida Keys Credit Union’s “Financial Fitness Challenge,” winning up to $5,000 and learning plenty in the process.

While more than half of the states don’t require high school students to take an economics course, Florida does. Keys Federal Credit Union has teamed up with the League of Southeastern Credit Unions and made a serious commitment to ensuring that Keys kids don’t fall behind on finances.

The kicker? It’s fun!

KFCU, the Monroe County School District, and local businesses will create and sponsor student teams of two to three to compete in the educational tournament. It’s through a program created by Visa and the National Football League, called “financial football.”

The interface is sophisticated and engaging, like any video game, and students can play as one of their favorite stars from the NFL. Each correctly answered financial literacy question results in yards gained. The topics span budgeting, identity theft, debt, credit, financial institutions, and life events. Anyone can play the game online at www.financialfootball.com (I already learned a thing or two), but only Keys high school students can compete in the Financial Fitness Tournament.

While last year, it was only a Key West event, it’s now inclusive to all high school students in the Keys. “They’ll compete at their area level, and then there is a competition to crown a Keys champion," said Sarah Evans, marketing coordinator at FKCU, "then they’ll compete at a state level, and then the league will handle state and regional levels.” The prize is $1,500 for each

smaller region (Key West, Marathon, Key Largo). The Keys champion will receive an additional $1,500, and the winning students can compete at the state level for more cash prizes. FKCU sees it as an incentive to save money for college or another long-term goal.

FKCU is also encouraging adults and businesses to get involved through local sponsorship of their teams — the entry fee is $250 per team. They are hoping for as many entries as possible, to make for a healthy competition and more learning opportunities for the players.

The closing date for entries is Feb. 17, and the tournament is running through March. There are events pages on FKCU’s website, as well as Facebook.

It’s not just about the short-term goal of prizewinnings. Says Evans: “It’s about understanding the value of the money as well … It encourages them to play a little bit more, and it’s non-traditional learning. It’s real world financial fitness, and how to be savvy financially.”

FKCU CEO Maggie Sayer has been behind the effort since its inception.

Said Sayer, “We are excited to partner with both the businesses in our communities and the League of Southeast Credit Unions to provide a fun, educational competition for Keys high school students. By helping educate and inform our local students about money management and personal finance, we hope to help produce future financially literate members of our communities.”

WORDS KEY WEST PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL GROWS

T

he Key West Photography Festival is back for round two. Making it through its yearling phase, the photo festival has grown and is fast becoming an essential scenic event for the Key West arts. This year’s submissions were up by 200 percent, with more than 250 individual photographers submitting more than 600 photos from 10 countries, and the results are spectacular. However, the festival isn’t just about who is artier than thou, but a chance for photographers, both amateur and professional, to gather, talk and attend some fantastic lectures on their craft. Taking place Thursday-Sunday, Feb 7-10, the festival will occupy a pop-up space at 402 Duval St. from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day and is open to all.

“It’s made a mark on the community,” said Quincy Perkins, festival founder and organizer, who couldn’t be more proud of the response to this year’s festival. “Photography has been able to make a statement and show a cool pocket of artists here in Key West.”

Mornings will begin with Coffee & Photos, a roundtable discussion for all; then throughout the day, there will be talks by local photographers. Don’t miss returning speaker, local Mark Hedden, with “No Coherent Theory” on Thursday, and he’s never funny or creative.

Never. Also, Friday will feature gallery visits to local exhibitions.

What NOT to miss is this year’s two guest lecturers.

Djibril Drame, a young, contemporary photographer who is known worldwide for his depiction of modern Africa, will speak on Thursday night. His stunning portraits have captured recognition from social media to global media and organizations.

Also, American photography icon Herman LeRoy Emmet will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday night. Emmet won the Pictures of the Year Canon Photo Essay prize in 1987 for photojournalism, and his photos are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

His book published in 1989, “Fruit Tramps: A Family of Migrant Workers” is revered for its photo activism and historical photo content. This lecture is the only ticketed event at $10.

From amateurs to the professionals, the festival is an excellent addition to showcasing the immense talent and draw arts festivals have in the Keys.

lizabeth Bishop, Pulitzer Prize winner and U.S. Poet Laureate, first came to Key West in the 1930s. Having newly graduated from Vassar, and only in her 20s, Bishop personified the attitude of the island by defying conventions. She lived as an independent woman and bought an eyebrow house at 624 White St. in 1938 with friend, former classmate and lover, Louise Crane.

Bishop worked in Key West on what would become her first collection of poetry, “North and South,” which published to critical acclaim and put her on the map as a talent to watch. While in Key West, she also befriended Pauline Pfeiffer, Ernest Hemingway’s sophisticated, enterprising second (and soon to be ex-) wife. Of swimming in the Hemingways’ lavish pool at 907 Whitehead St., Bishop wrote: “I find that each underwater bulb is five times the voltage of one bulb in the light house across the street, so the pool must be visible to Mars — it is wonderful to swim around in a sort of green fire, one’s friends look like luminous frogs.”

Bishops words are left scattered around Key West—the above quote is inscribed by the pool. With searing social and religious commentary in poems like “Roosters,” elegiac ruminations like “Full Moon, Key West,” and her own epic “The Old Man and the Sea”-like fisherwoman’s battle “The Fish,” Key West’s influence on the poet is welldocumented. James Merrill, who came to the island after Bishop (and won a Pulitzer in his own right) wrote of her: “One has to blush, faced with poems some of us feel to be more

wryly radiant, more touching, more unaffectedly intelligent than any written in our lifetime.”

The Key West Poetry Guild will honor Bishop on Friday, Feb. 8, feting her 108th birthday at Key West Theater in the Back Stage Listening Room. Presenters, including past and present members of the Poetry Guild, will read the poetry of Bishop and share cake and “liquid refreshment” in the late poet’s honor. The evening brings to mind Bishop’s immortalized query from “Questions of Travel,” inscribed outside her old White Street residence: “Should we have stayed home, wherever that may be?” Not this Friday, Ms. Bishop.

20 QUESTIONS WITH THE COOPERS

hey fell in love with each other and then fell in love with Key West, both at first sight. Jimmy and Joanna Cooper still act like newlyweds after 30 years together, and that’s what Valentine’s Day is all about: love, commitment and lots of humor. It was as simple as a 22-year-old deejay walking into a bar and seeing a 21-yearold cocktail waitress — ah well, her behind at least — and spending late nights after their shifts at Dunkin’ Donuts. Jimmy proposed to Joanna three months later on a hot air balloon and said, “Our love can’t go any higher, will you marry me?” That’s how it’s done, folks. After a trip to Key West, the couple decided to take the deejay show on the road, moved here in 1993 and started their company Soundwave together, a premier deejay and videography company. The Coopers raised their two children here but also have been raising the roofs at party after party with Jimmy deejaying, Joanna taking video, for just about every gig in town. They are partners in life, business and parenting but mostly, in love. Hallmark, eat your heart out.

Note: Jim and Joanna answered separately and did not see the other’s answers … until now.

Was it love at first sight?

Joanna: Love was far from my heart. My boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend the night before I met Jim. Then, “when you least expect it,” bam, I met my forever love.

Jimmy: As I walked into the restaurant one night to load in for my DJ shift, Joanna was standing on a chair writing on a blackboard with her back to me, her butt at eye level. So, yeah, it was love at first sight for me.

Three words to describe your partner…

Joanna: Adventurous, generous, supportive.

Jimmy: Giving, sharing, fun.

What’s your motto for a happy/long marriage?

Joanna: “WHY...because we can.”

Jimmy: “Why? Because we can!”

What’s his favorite meal? And yours?

Joanna: Mine is sushi, his at the moment is buffalo chicken with eggs and avocado and my green goddess juice.

Jimmy: Dinner out? Sushi for both of us!

Name some of his/her quirks…

Joanna: He has a backup of backups.

Which has served him well with his career.

He will have the first dance for a wedding on his hard drive, his phone, his iPod and access to the internet. It also helps me because we never run out of anything at home.

Jimmy: Joanna is actually dyslexic so her texts can be an adventure …

Who do the kids think is a better cook?

Joanna: Definitely me … but boy can he create a great dance mix.

Jimmy: Uh, Mom. What was the best present he/she ever gave you?

Joanna: Himself.

Jimmy: Her hand in marriage.

If you compared yourself to any celebrity couple, who would it be?’

Joanna: Will and Jada Smith. They are solid and fun and put family first. ….and Will grew up in Philly like us.

Jimmy: Besides us? David and Victoria Beckham.

Joanna: Who hit the “easy button” more.

We have an “easy button” in our office and on our kitchen counter. We use it as often as we can to remind ourselves how easy life really is.

Jimmy: Argue? Who argues?

What household chore does the other avoid that drives you crazy?

Joanna: This is a hard question, as Jim over the years offered and learned how to do more chores like the laundry and always helps with making the lists and menus and does all the school planning with our kids.

Jimmy: Chores? That’s what our teenage son is for…

Who could talk their way out of a speeding ticket?

Joanna: Definitely me.

Jimmy: Joanna… several times.

Who would win a dance-off?

Joanna: It’s a tie.

Jimmy: In my mind, I am undefeated.

Who thinks they are the funnier one?

Joanna: Definitely Jim, you will be able to tell from his answers to these questions.

Jimmy: I find myself to be hilarious.

Who’s more likely to keep a secret?

Joanna: Both.

Jim: If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret.

Advice you give your kids for a happy marriage?

Joanna: Communication is the key. Talk it over. We are blessed enough to be together 24/7, so we can discuss things as they come up, keeping the lines of communication open and healthy is so important. Feelings are neither right or wrong ... they just are.

Jimmy: The best gift you can give your kids is a happy marriage.

If invisible what do you think the other would do?

Joanna: Random acts of kindness.

Jimmy: If Joanna were invisible she would run around performing random acts of kindness.

Who swears more and who is more polite?

Joanna: Our motto is “it’s better to be kind than right” and has brought us years of great communication. Neither swears, but both of us are very polite.

Vince Neil ready to rock the Keys

—Vince Neil on the biopic movie "The Dirt," coming this spring based on Mötley Crüe’s 2002 memoirs. It will feature four new Mötley Crüe songs.

e’s the antidote for snowflakes. Vince Neil, lead singer of Mötley Crüe, is a hardcore, down and dirty rock 'n’ roller, who delivers that soul-pounding sound that feels so good. He’s got a jaw-dropping past and a hidden sweet spot for his “Crüe” that keeps him loud and proud of his music. Headlining Coral Head Music Festival on Sunday, Feb. 17, Neil plays the hits off his solo albums “Exposed” and “Tattoos & Tequila," as well as others, and of course, some classic Mötley Crüe.

“I heard it was the Keys and I knew it would be killer,” said Neil, talking like a seasoned rock star. It's not his first Keys visit; Neil hosted the “Motley Cruise,” which stopped in Key West back in 2008. The Keys rule in his book.

Neil joined Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx to form Mötley Crüe almost four decades ago, in 1981.

“I’ve done it all my life," he said. "I love it, it’s a great job.”

The band forged its way through a sea of excellent heavy metal and hard rock bands like Def Leppard, Van Halen, and Poison and came out on top with hits like “Theatre of Pain” “Girls, Girls, Girls," “Home Sweet Home” and “Dr. Feelgood." Their music defined sex, drugs, and rock 'n’ roll both onstage and off. Each member of the band made headlines with wild parties, brushes with the law and skirting death.

But he isn’t all music. Neil’s a huge football fan, but wouldn’t say his Super Bowl pick so as not to offend anyone.

But “Kickstart My Heart” was featured in a Mr. Peanut ad, making Neil happy to be at least a part of Super Bowl. Also an entrepreneur, he has businesses in the tattoo industry, a winery, tequila brand and restaurants called Dr. Feelgood, among many ventures. “I like doing all those things because then I can give back. That’s what really makes a difference.” Neil donates heavily to charities around the country and has a soft spot for helping others.

But it always comes back to the music. “I promise, everyone’s gonna know every word to every song,” said Neil. “I love concerts, and I promise a high energy show.”

A rock star is always a rock star and a stage, as Neil sings, is always “Home Sweet Home."

he 5th annual Conch Republic Polar Bear Plunge took place at “the crack of noon” on Feb. 3 at Higgs Beach. Locals and tourists alike, some bedecked in costumes, some with Conch Republic flags flying, came together to dip into the (to be fair, pretty darn warm) winter waters off Key West. The T-shirt sales and donations benefit Samuel’s House, a nonprofit which provides housing and support for homeless women and men with children. One polar bear plunge participant commented that she would not be participating in her native Michigan. Thank goodness for subtropical weather!

Message from the Sheriff I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I’m happy to report that we had few reports of thefts over the holidays. Though we did take some reports, the number of instances were few and for that, I give credit where it’s due: To all of you. You locked your doors, monitored your mail and helped out by keeping an eye on your neighbor’s home or their boat while they were away. It’s that sort of community mindset that makes for safer neighborhoods. Which brings me to my next point: Crime continues to drop in Monroe County!

I’m very happy to see our annual crime statistics showed an impressive decrease in crime and an increase in the clearance rate for the 2018 calendar year. Specifically, overall crime is down by 16.3 percent. Two of the biggest drops were aggravated assault — which dropped from 160 in 2017 to 137 in 2018 — and larceny. There were 817 reported larcenies in 2017 and 689 in 2018.

We also saw a significant increase in the number of cases cleared. In 2017, the clearance rate for crimes was 31 percent. That figure jumped to 38.6 percent for 2018. The state average for clearance rates was about 23.4 percent for 2017, so our clearance rate is significantly higher than the 2017 state average.

I want to personally thank the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office for working so tirelessly. Life in law enforcement can be a tough assignment, but I know our people take a lot of pride in solving burglaries, returning stolen goods and making this community safer in general. To them, we all owe a big, “Thank you!”

It is my continued belief that our policy which makes community policing our guiding philosophy is having an impact on crime. I know I say it all the time, but it’s true — we can’t do it alone. These improved figures are not only a testament to the hark work put in the men and women of the Sheriff’s Offices, but to all of you — the businesses, community watch leaders and residents who extend us a helping hand.
