slamorada Council members convening for a Jan. 31 meeting will consider an affordable housing development near Plantation Key School. Specifically, council members will decide on whether to execute documents and expend funds to purchase the parcels.

In late September, village council directed Village Manager Seth Lawless to explore the purchase of three vacant lots on Gardenia Street, Plantation Key, to build affordable housing units. Two lots front U.S. 1 and are located between the North Plantation Key Wastewater Master Pump Station and Plantation Key School. The third lot fronts Gardenia Street and is next to the other two parcels.

“It’s perfect for affordable, workforce housing for teachers, school resource officers, etc.,” Councilman Ken Davis said in November.

Lawless and Village Attorney Roget Bryan began negotiating with the property owner last October. Lawless sought additional direction from

council at a meeting last November after discovering that the purchase of a narrow strip of the adjacent property on Gardenia Street would increase the units that could be built from five to six. Council directed Lawless to continue negotiations with the property owner to purchase the three lots and the 2-foot strip of the adjoining parcel.

Per the resolution that’ll be before council, the property owner has agreed to sell the three parcels and additional strip of land for $315,000.

Mayor Deb Gillis said property on Plantation Key for six affordable housing units is a start for what’s needed locally. She noted the council also will be considering a vacant lot located at 173 Orchid St. for an affordable housing unit. The owner of the property has offered to sell it for $50,000.

Other resolutions on the agenda include approving renewal of an engagement with Mauldin & Jenkins for professional auditing services for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30; approving the final ranking and recommendation of the RFP 18-22 Evaluation Committee for Construction of Venetian Shores Stormwater Management System.

Before resolutions, Peter Bacheler, who chairs the Local Planning Agency, and Carolyn Wightman, who chairs the Parks & Recreation Citizens Advisory Committee, will speak.

‘We’re all locals’ The man behind the canal cleanup

B

elow budget, on schedule, no negative issues and most of all, tons and tons of debris removed. Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental, Inc. is leading the canal cleanup to the finish line, and director Greg Tolpin says it’s gone quite well as he looks to conclude mid-March.

“We’re all locals living here,” he said. “Knowing these waters and working in these canals for the past 25 years, it gave us the unique ability to know where the challenges were going to be and how to overcome them prior to starting the job.”

Tolpin is a 30-year resident of the Keys. Founded by Chris Colarusso and Tolpin in 1997, Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead canal cleanup, and he had the effort ramped up from day one. Tolpin said he is grateful to the county and the entire community for their support in helping complete the project on time and under budget.

“We hit the ground running and there was no learning curve,” Tolpin said. “We were ready to go and we haven’t looked back. We’re going to feel good when it’s all done.”

government project that’s under budget and scheduled to be completed a month or more ahead of time? Yes. Monroe County’s project to clean up canals clogged with Hurricane Irma debris is projected to come in under budget by as much as $11 million. That includes “extra” canals that were added to the original project’s scope without increasing the cost. And now it includes some dredging projects as well, or what the county calls “sediment removal.”

As of late January, 79 percent of the 172 canals have been cleared and only 31 percent of the budget has been spent — $14.2 million of $45.8 million.

And there’s time to spare, too, with 60 days left to complete the project.

Initially, the county requested approval of the cleanup of 102 canals in Islamorada, Marathon, and unincorporated parts of the county such as Big Pine Key. Then it asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Services to approve an additional 69 canals. Done.

Then, it submitted another 16 for review, but only one — located behind the courthouse in Marathon — received an OK. “We have 172 canals approved for service and have only 32 canals remaining,” said Monroe County Sustainability Director Rhonda Haag. “There have been no safety or environmental concerns. We see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

At a recent meeting of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, she told the commission that not one dollar of county money has been invested. The bulk of the money is coming from the federal government, with the 25 percent matching funds paid out of Stewardship Act funds.

When it became apparent that there would be surplus funds, the county began submitting requests for sediment removal under the same grant. While Islamorada had some debris in the canals, the worst problems in the village boundaries were associated with sand-choked canals, making navigation possible only for shallow draft boats.

Haag said the county submitted a list of 34 canals to be dredged to the USDA. That has already been knocked down to 18 canals, still under review.

The sediment-clogged canals have been identified in Big Pine Key (10), Marathon (3), and Islamorada (5). If those projects are approved, there would still be a surplus of $11.8 million. Haag credited the hard work of the contractors.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental (see story at left) was hired by the county to lead the cleanup.

Working with Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island, the workforce numbers about 60 people using four grapple trucks, five sonar boats and 15 barges. Wood Environmental is monitoring the work.

If there’s a wrinkle, it’s the going rate of what it costs to get things done in the Keys. The federal grant only covers a 7.5 percent fee for auditing work, though the county agreed to a 10 percent fee. The discrepancy means Wood Environmental is waiting on a partial payment of $173,000 of work it has performed.

Haag said the state is aware of the conflict and has agreed to pay the differential.

According to the county, canal debris cleanup continues in unincorporated Monroe County and one canal in Marathon. The work in Islamorada is complete.

slamorada’s Tiki Tennis team was greeted during the morning of Jan. 28 with winds and temperatures in the mid-50s. But that didn’t stop the women from heating up the courts.

The tennis team has had quite the successful season, having won matches against their Monroe County rivals, including Ocean Reef, Marathon and Key West. Coached by Susie Jannach, nine players are preparing to head to Lake Nona in Orlando on Feb. 2 for TriLevel Championships. The women will compete against 12 other teams.

“We’re very excited,” she said. “I’ve experienced it myself on the individual level with a team when I played in college, and I also went all the way to a national championship. To turn back around and coach a team toward states, it’s really exciting, especially down here because the women are so fun and friendly.”

Players spent Monday morning braving the cold as they went through volleying and return drills. They finished practice with a little “queen of the court” before calling it a day.

Jannach said getting the women to be competitive at the outset was a challenge. The team’s been together since fall 2017, and now, Jannach said, they’re “little tiger sharks.” The team was able to beat everybody wherever they went last season, and she said there were many close matches.

“They thrive on the excitement of it all, but yet we can still be friends and be a team,” she said. “It’s a physical game. It’s a mental and technical game. There’s an awful lot of strategy.

To learn that late in life really is a tribute to the women because they’re

learning a new skill. Many didn’t grow up playing.”

Those heading to competition are captain Susan Latham, co-captain Karla Gables, Suzy Fryman, Alicia Kubida, Elizabeth Stancyk, Diana Bernard, Aimee Volland, Barbara Bernstein and Cindy Atkinson.

“We’re going to give it our all,” she said.

any runners came out last year to “scale the whale.” This year, the event is back, as participants prepare for some fun on an old, familiar bridge.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, Chi Sigma sorority, chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, will hold its second annual Whale Harbor Bridge Run. The event is all for a good cause, as proceeds go toward scholarships for Coral Shores students and a scholarship in memory of Holly Given.

“Being it was our inaugural year and we scheduled it on the same day as the 7-mile bridge run, we think it was a great success,” said Sandy El-Koury, sorority member and organizer. “We were able to raise almost $3,000 for student scholarships and we were also able to make a sizable contribution to the domestic abuse shelter in the name of Holly Given.”

Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. at the tent in front of Wahoo’s, with participants off and running at 10 a.m. Registration for those 21 and younger is $20. For those over 21, registration is $30 and includes entry into the race, a T-shirt, two beer tickets from Islamorada Beer Company, ditty bag and lunch ticket provided by Whale Harbor. Those 21 and under get a T-shirt, treat ticket, ditty bag and lunch ticket by Whale Harbor.

“We are predicting this year to bigger and better. We have come up with ideas to improve and expand,” El-Koury said.

“We have added vendors for the runners and spectators to enjoy, a DJ to help keep the party going and a costume contest for anyone who wants to dress up.”

The race will end around 10:30 a.m. as runners trek the entire length of the bridge. Upon reaching the north end of the bridge, runners grab a doughnut for a fuel boost before heading back across. At the doughnut tent, there will also be water to stave off dehydration. After the race, stick around, eat and enjoy what Wahoo’s and Whale Harbor have to offer.

El-Koury said spectators are welcome to come cheer on their runners. There will be police in attendance for safety. If you like to have a good time and don’t take things too seriously … this race is for you!

ear a bra, go for a walk and support a worthwhile cause to support those battling cancer.

On Sunday, Feb. 10, community members will gather for the inaugural Bra Walk Moose March Against Cancer at the Islamorada Moose Lodge.

Already drawing many registrants and teams, the bra walk event is supporting The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to offer assistance to qualified cancer patients who live in the Keys, aiding them in their journey for education and treatment in any way possible.

The goal of the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys is to assist qualified patients while undergoing treatment when other financial sources of assistance have been exhausted.

As for the bra walk, cancer survivor K. Shylon Martin and Kimberly Fournier, a bartender at the Moose Lodge, came up with the idea. Islamorada Moose Lodge then hopped on board to sponsor it.

“Now, we have all kinds of auction items and donations of all sorts,” said Linda Cantin, one of the organizers. “It’s all for a great cause as money raised will stay in Monroe County and go to the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys to help cancer patients.”

The bra walk is a seven-stop, poker-run-style event. Participants wearing their decorated bras will stop at the following locations: Whistle Stop, Islamorada Beer Company, Lion’s Lair, Islander Resort, Shrimp Shack, Florida Keys Brewing Company, Green Turtle Inn and Islamorada Moose Lodge.

Participants will visit each location and draw a card, and best hand wins.

Hands will be tallied at the Islamorada Moose Lodge. The prize for best hand will be awarded during the finish line festivities.

Registration is $25 and begins at 11 a.m. Finish line festivities including prizes and entertainment start at 4 p.m. Some of the prizes include best bra decoration and best team spirit.

Cantin said everyone is encouraged to attend the inaugural event that’s helping Keys families fight cancer.

“We already have several teams registered,” Cantin said. “A lot of cancer survivors will be marching in it as well.”

ales of buried treasure have been whispered around the Florida Keys since barstool historians first began sipping rum.

Actual instances of treasure discovered buried on the islands are few and far between for a number of reasons, including “Mum’s the word.” On Feb. 1, 1938 there was a story submitted by Ed. J.C. Roberts to the Federal Writer’s Project, titled “Buried Treasure.” Roberts wrote of a hired hand identified

as Kewley Culmer who worked for the Russell family on Upper Matecumbe Key. One day, while gardening and pulling a clump of weeds, he unearthed 27 pieces of gold and silver. A trusted worker, he turned the find over to the Russell family, who speculated the coins were worth the tidy sum of $1,000.

It was suspected there was more treasure, somewhere.

According to Roberts’ account, the Russells believed “the treasure would be found in an iron-bound barrel, set upon two stones, and will be under a solid covering of brick and concrete.” Their suspicions were later fortified when a stranger showed up with a chart said to have been given to him by a Spanish family. The chart led the group to a likely spot, though the rest of the treasure was never found.

WINTER CAMP Examining Florida Bay backcountry

W

inter has set up camp here in the Florida Keys!

By any northerner’s definition of winter we’ve had wonderful weather. Locals can be identified from a distance these days simply by the layers of clothing they are hiding under, which leads me to the subject of finding consistent catching when the weather is all over the place. Water temps stay pretty steady on the oceanside once you get out into 20 feet of water or so, but the shallow waters of Florida Bay cool off rapidly with these northerly winds and the cold fronts that have been rolling through the Keys.

So let’s look at the backcountry of Florida Bay first, as it’s complicated to say the least. The depth of the bay behind Islamorada and Key Largo averages 3 feet at best and finding water deeper than 7 feet is hard to do. The island moats can get 11 feet here and there but it’s more likely to be 8 to 9 feet here and there. The importance of depth is that when a cold front hits, the deepest water will be warmer and snook, redfish, trout and everybody else will pile in for warmth and food.

The shrimp will be thick in the moats, so your best bet is to choose fresh shrimp or buck tails and artificials that mimic these little Snicker bars for fish.

It’s important to fish low and slow in the cooler water. I like a 1/8-3/8 ounce jig head in any color as long as it’s chartreuse. You can do a Knocker rig or Carolina rig as well and it works with live pinfish or pilchards. The flats around Flamingo will heat water in the sun; if the falling tide is in the

afternoon, fish the run outs where the tide falls into the deeper channels around the flats.

Sailfish will be crashing baits all over the reef line and kingfish will be thick just off the reef edge on out to 200 feet of water. Blackfin tuna have been raiding bait pods in the same area, so be ready for them as well.

Fields to open in time for Little League

he extensive hurricane repairs and new construction at the two baseball fields at Monroe County’s Harry Harris Park are near completion, enabling them to reopen by Friday, Feb. 1 – in time for the opening of Little League season.

“We had to rebuild everything from the fencing to the dugouts,” said Robert Glassmer, Monroe County’s administrator for buildings, parks and beaches in the Upper Keys. “The kids are really going to love this.”

Hurricane Irma severely damaged the entire oceanfront park. The Monroe County Facilities Maintenance crew worked hard to meet the Little League season opening of March 1. They removed 600 tons of clay contaminated with seaweed and saltwater intrusion and replaced it with new clay. Workers also installed a new irrigation system, replaced the electric service in the concession stand, built new dugouts, replaced the fencing, and installed shiny new red dugout seats and bleachers.

The ball fields will be open for daytime play only, until the new lighting can be completed by a contractor.

Now underway are designs for the repairs to Wilkinson Point and the swim area jetty. Construction will begin soon after design is complete and is projected to be completed in late summer 2019.

The first part of the repairs to the hurricane-damaged park included reopening the beach, playground and boat ramp. An area also was designated for pets on a leash, since they are not allowed on the beach.

Jenn Weiden, president of the Upper Keys Little League, said the league is thrilled and thankful the ballparks are reopening.

“The county staff has done a tremendous job communicating with us on the ongoing progress and as a result we were able to add a new division with more than 70 players this year,” Weiden said. “Our goal is to provide baseball opportunities to all players between the ages of 4 and 13 and the reopening of Harry Harris baseball fields is certainly allowing us to do so.”

Located in the median near MM 99, Keys Bite Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Run by sisters Adela and Alma Munoz, the restaurant’s menu has options for all to enjoy.

“We have all-American food, and we incorporate Mexican in our lunch as well as a few breakfast items,” Adela said. “For the night menu, it’s different than breakfast and lunch, and it offers what you will find here in the Keys. We also have a Hibachi menu, so there’s something for everyone.”

For lunch or dinner, patrons can start off with one of several appetizers, including the Keysbite Nachos. With choices of ground beef, chicken, pork or steak, bring some help, as the plate is filled with nachos, cheese, lettuce and pico de gallo. The lunch menu also features a variety of Mexican favorites. Try the Island burrito that’s made with blackened shrimp, scallops and mahi and sautéed with tomatoes and onions.

Keys Bite’s dinner menu includes a number of chicken choices, steaks, seafood, pasta, Mexican favorites, burgers and more. For breakfast, try one of many skillets, omelet options or waffles, pancakes or eggs, to name a few choices.

The Island burrito is made with blackened shrimp, scallops and mahi and sautéed with tomatoes and onions.

Adela says the Mexican menu items are very popular. From tacos and enchiladas to the popular Keys Bite nachos appetizer, those looking for a good Mexican dish will leave satisfied.

“The Keys Bite nachos are a meal itself,” Adela said.

Keys Bite has been around for five years. As for the Munoz family, they’ve been in the Keys since the 1980s. Adela said most employees are family. Those who aren’t, Adela says, are pretty close to it.

“We’ve all grown up working in a restaurant down here,” she said. “We (family) just decided we’d open up our own restaurant.”

Adela said community support for Keys Bite has been amazing with locals coming in frequently. She said roughly 80 percent of the customer base lives locally.

“Obviously, we’re here for everybody,” she said. “We love seeing our locals .”

he 30th annual Mariners Hospital Bougainvillea Ball brought good times, plenty of drinks, delicious food, music and dancing and more. Held Jan. 26, the ball benefits Mariners Hospital Emergency Center expansion.

During last year’s ball, Board of Mariners Hospital Chairman Jay Herschoff asked everyone to dig deep and support a special piece of equipment in the single-photon emission computed tomography, or SPECT/CT. Attendees heeded Herschoff’s plea, as money raised from last year’s event allowed the hospital to add the new machine to its arsenal of advanced technologies.

This year, Herschoff had a different ask, as the hospital looks to expand the emergency room.

“We need your help,” he said.

“While we have a great facility there, we’re going to make it better.”

reasure Village Montessori held its first annual spelling bee recently, and two students are on their way to the next phase of competition.

Fourth-grader Gabriella Gutierrez and seventh-grader Pascal Weisberger will head to the Scripps Spelling Bee in Miami on Feb. 19. Gutierrez, the elementary school winner, won in round 18. The winning word was barbarous. Tied for second place in the elementary competition were Sofia Figueredo and Jason Lubis, round 17. In fourth place was Jackson Garcia, round 14; tied for fifth place were Nicole Giordano and Charlotte MacEachern, round 9; and tied for seventh place were Jenna Mandozzi and William Pope, round 8.

In the middle school contest, Weisberger won in round 27. The winning word was lobelia. Coming in second place was Jordan Lubis, round 26. Weisberger and Lubis went back and forth for an impressive 10 rounds, spelling words such as auf Wiedersehen, balaclavas, eviscerated and beryllium. In third place was Tommy Cheung, round 16; tied for fourth place were Claudia Alvarado, Elizabeth Giordano and Izabella Huffman, round 6.

All of the students mentioned will be traveling to Miami on Feb. 19 to cheer on Gutierrez and Weisberger.

Concert features London musicians

n Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m.

Burton Memorial United Methodist Church will host Alison Crum and Roy Marks for an afternoon of 16th-century dances, divisions and instrumental settings.

Crum is one of the best-known British exponents of the viol. As teacher, performer and moving spirit behind several well-known early music groups, she has traveled all over the world giving recitals and lectures and teaching in summer schools and workshops.

After considering a career in meteorology, she decided to study music as a French horn player. While there she started playing the viol, and went on to study it. She has made more than 100 recordings with some of Britain's finest ensembles and, as a soloist, on discs of Marais, Bach and virtuoso Italian divisions.

Crum is president of the Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain, professor of viol at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, and a visiting teacher at several colleges and universities in Europe and the U.S. She is also the author of two highly acclaimed books on playing the viol, and has been called the doyenne of British viol teachers.

Over the years her continuing interest in weather has led her to experience first-hand several exotic parts of the world – from dog sledging in Greenland to driving a Toyota Land Cruiser in Eritrea, and from climbing the more modest summits of the Himalayas to descending the depths of Death Valley.

Services: Marks is Crum’s husband. In early childhood he began playing the piano and, as a teenager, played lead guitar in a rhythm and blues band. Rather than to conservatoires of music, however, he went to colleges of art to study – studies that culminated at the Royal Academy in London, where he was awarded the prestigious David Murray scholarship for landscape painting.

Marks went on to teach painting and drawing in adult education; but, in his late thirties, he turned his attention almost exclusively to early music – to the recorder, the viol and the lute.

He also edits, arranges and composes music for his friends to play.

Together, Crum and Marks are very much occupied with playing music from the 16th to the 18th century, and they have collected a large number of copies of early instruments – all of which they play. As members of The Rose Consort of Viols they have recorded many CDs of English consort music; and, as teachers, they are popular on courses and workshops in the U.S. as well as in Europe.

In more recent years they have grown increasingly fond of the earlier repertoire represented in this concert.

The concert is sponsored by the Burton Hand Bell Ringers and the viola da gamba group called Tropical Viols.

A

s an infrequent visitor to libraries these days, it was a pleasure to visit Key Largo Library recently to drop off some books, because it turned out to be a productive visit.

I met Chris Morgan, library assistant since 2006 and former teacher in Houston who moved here to work with dolphin therapy at Island Dolphin Care.

She originally came to the library for its story hour, and before long, she was working there. She happily points out that the program is still going strong twice a week at 10:30 a.m. for infants up to 5-years-old.

When asked why story hour has lasted so long, Chris explained that picture books help to develop rhythm of language, songs, finger plays, nursery rhymes and good language development. After that, activities like arts and crafts and Play-Doh puzzles develop and hone pre-writing and fine motor skills.

So why should very young kids and even families come here? Morgan proudly points out the non-electronic toys for the younger set, which she believes promote socialization not only among children, but among parents, grandparents and nannies. “It’s like a support group for the adults,” she said.

“They bring snacks for kids, for themselves, and the holiday parties are open to tourists and visitors. Grandparents will bring their visiting grandkids in to see what’s going on.”

For babies and moms looking for wellness, there’s “You and Me Yoga,” a program for infants up to 4 years; starting in February, a Monday program expands to 5- to 12-year olds.

These programs are free and no library card is required.

One issue Morgan noted was how difficult it is to get students into the library after school, mostly due to after-school activities like dance, athletics, Tae Kwon Do, and other offerings typically on an adolescent’s slate. “The students today have so much on their plates, so much to choose from. After a certain age, it gets harder and harder to get them in,” she said.

One way to entice them is with the variety of activities the library offers after school: movies for elementary and middle school students, research resources, and of course, just fun reading. For those who aren’t taught cursive, there’s even a class for that.

“Electronics has taken over their lives; with technology and WiFi at home, there’s no need to come to the library, except when they’re occasionally required to find books.”

There are a handful of high school offerings, notably the Junior Librarian Program developed by the Girl Scouts, where students working with her can earn achievement patches.

Not wanting to leave anyone out, Morgan is an interpreter for deaf students.

“The library isn’t just books,” said Chris. “It’s wellness, clubs for kids, a socializing spot for both young and old, and we’re willing to support the children and families in any way we can.

Everyone knows the Keys are a transient society — the population goes up during season due to snowbirds and dwindles to regulars during the summer — but we strive to be a go-to place no matter what the season.”

n New Year’s Day we were anchored south of the Ocean Reef Club off Key Largo and chumming hard.

We had caught several nice mangrove, mutton, yellowtail, lane snapper and porgies on the shallow patches inside of Hawk’s channel, when a scene out of Caddy Shack occurred where what appeared to be a solid human turd floated slowly through our chum-slick on the tide. The boat owner suggested we take our lines out of the water until it passed. None of us required urging to comply. Thereafter we continued fishing for another hour when yet another, slightly smaller turd floated by.

For some time, we have seen strong west winds blow dirty water out of the Gulf of Mexico. Also, the Key Largo sewer authority has been connecting Ocean Reef Club’s sewer system to the relatively new Key Largo tertiary sewage treatment center. For many years going back and many years to come a sewer pipe off Key Biscayne, otherwise known as the crap hole, has and will release billions of gallons of partially treated sewage from Miami into the Gulf Stream. I wondered if any could have been responsible for what I was seeing. Either way it disgusted me and made me think about our impact on nature.

Soon after the second turd, the boat owner suggested we pull in our lines and move to deeper, cleaner water. On our way out, I texted my friend, Capt. Justin Hopper on the Fantastic II out of Holiday Inn Key Largo: “We had two turds float by while fishing the inside patches,” I said.

"Turtle turds are all over the place," he texted back.

I asked if he was joking.

"No sir,” was his response.

Thinking back, I’ve seen the numbers of turtles off Key Largo increase over the years. Earlier this year, my son, who is an adventure photographer, came back with reports of hundreds of the smaller hawksbill turtle hugging the bottom near the reef line. I asked my friend, retired marine studies professor David Makepeace, “Why would they all congregate in such a small area,” and his response was “Feed, breed, or clean.” He schooled me that sometimes they congregate in an area that serves home to a kind of wrasse that eats parasites off turtles and other sea life in a symbiotic relationship. He also mentioned that we get three different kinds of turtle in the Florida Keys, Loggerhead and green are the big ones and then the hawksbill, which ranges from one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half feet in length.

I went back to when I’d worked as a mate on private boats to supplement my writing income when I first came to the Keys. My first turtle steak had been at a hotel in Bimini in the early ‘90s.

To this day it is the finest steak I’ve ever tasted. I know they still eat turtle in my wife’s home country of Nicaragua, where raw turtle eggs on the half shell for breakfast are considered the best hangover cure in the universe.

What I’d thought was further reason for concern about man's impact on the environment turned out, instead, to be a testament to man's ability to conserve. Hooray for turtle turds!

There’s a service in the Keys that’s bringing the groceries on the list to the front door step.

Known as Shipt, the membershipbased service, with offices in Birmingham, Ala. And San Francisco, Cali., delivers food and household essentials from the store to residents’ homes.

Once people sign up, members can go on the Shipt app, pick the store they want, shop for their groceries, choose a delivery window and pay for their order. From there, a Shipt shopper will take and fulfill the order request to the intended address.

Ingrid Werther, of Keys Gate, has delivered groceries to residents from Homestead to the Upper Keys for several months. She said she’s delivered items to the elderly who can’t get out, new families with babies and kids as well as people who had surgery or are too busy to shop.

“It’s a whole range of people who use Shipt,” Werther said. “It allows them to spend more time with family.”

Through Shipt, users can make specific requests. For instance, if people want their bananas to be a little more green than yellow, or if they want a certain cut of meat, they can make a note when they check the item while making their list in the app. Werther said Shipt shoppers also contact the customers through the application if there are any questions or if an item is out of stock. Grocery items can also be added to the list as the shoppers are in the store.

“We also plan accordingly so we’re delivering the groceries on time,” Werther said. “If there’s a lot of traffic on the road, we will start sooner.”

A Shipt membership costs $99 a year and includes unlimited grocery deliveries, as long as each order is for more than $35. Orders under that amount cost $7 for delivery.

As a shopper, Werther said, she picks the times she wants to shop for people. She also gets to pick where she goes. Shipt shoppers are vetted through in-depth interviews, driving record reviews, background checks and vehicle inspections. Those looking to work for Shipt need to be over 21 and certified to deliver alcohol.

“It’s been awesome,” she said. “The perks of it for Shipt Shoppers are the flexibility and getting to go out into the community and meeting people.

You saved me so much time.’”

Captain Marty Lewis of Marathon led his team aboard Main Attraction to the overall win in the 29th annual Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament that ended Jan. 27. Team anglers Mark Busch, Daniel Roberts, Clint Rodamer and Shelby Bentley, all residents of Marathon, together released 10 sails in the best time for top honors.

Tournament director Liz Hill reported that 73 anglers aboard 19 boats released 82 sailfish during the two-day fishing contest.

The “Presidential” is the final leg of the three-tournament Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship, which includes the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament and the Islamorada Fishing Club Tournament. Team Last Dance totaled 25 releases over the three events to be named overall Gold Cup Series champion and was awarded the first-place prize of $24,000.
