According to a press release, the launch is coming soon at a Sedano’s supermarket in Miami. The developers promise a hyperlocal solution that offers both same-day pick up and same-day delivery. The technology was developed by Take Off and Knapp.

he Monroe County Board of Commissioners has decided to stretch out its new building allocations by reducing the number it awards each year.

Right now, the county gives out the rights to build 126 new market rate homes every year until 2023, when the state has said it can no longer issue new development rights. County staff has been directed to come up with a couple of scenarios to extend the deadline for another three years, to 2026.

Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley told the commissioners the benefits of doing so, and added that 2023 is “not the absolute end.”

“In 2020, there will be a new census and the state will re-conduct its hurricane model based on that data.

The census information should come out in 2021 or 2022,” Hurley said.

“Then the state can make a determination on whether there is any more room for ROGO allocations they could award to the county or city.”

The move also staves off any “takings” lawsuits by another three years — so long as there are still some new development allocations to be distributed, there is no lawsuit.

The year 2023 is a somewhat self-imposed deadline. In 2012 the state, county and municipalities counted how many new development allocations remained, that would still allow them to meet the 24-hour hurricane evacuation of all residents in 24 hours, and the parties divvied them up. That rate of distribution was then written into the county’s and cities’ comprehensive plans. Extending the timeline requires an amendment, and the process — from committee, to Planning Commission, to the BOCC, to the state Department of Economic Opportunity, and back to the BOCC again — allows plenty of opportunity for public input.

Public comments were all in favor of delaying the 2023 deadline.

“We feel it is a critical issue to make the ROGOs last longer,” said Joyce Newman, on behalf of Last Stand. “It would demonstrate good faith to the state and federal governments and provide more time to establish trust and land acquisition funding partnership.”

Bill Hunter said, “It’s the most logical thing to do.”

The BOCC is not making any hasty steps, however, in accepting its share of the extra 1,300 affordable housing units awarded by the state. It has decided to take a “wait and see” position until the challenge to City of Marathon’s decision to accept its share (300), is resolved by an administrative judge. That may not be until late April.

Commissioner Heather Carruthers asked if there was an expiration date on the state’s offer and staff replied in the negative.

That opened another vein of conversation — because the extra allocations were awarded by the former governor and cabinet and did not go through the regular rule-making process, it’s possible that the current administration could rescind the offer or, conversely, grant thousands more to cover all the vacant parcels and completely eliminate the threat of takings lawsuits and the related financial obligations.

Next week: County staff offers suggestions on existing policies, programs and actions to further mitigate the financial and legal ramifications of vacant, privately owned parcels without building rights.

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay is keeping pressure on the state Department of Transportation to replace the streetlights that have gone dark since Hurricane Irma. He estimates there are 600 non-operable lights in the Florida Keys, most of them in Marathon.

“From 37th to 52nd streets is pretty much a black zone” Ramsay said. “And from 110th Street to Key Colony Beach there’s not a single light that works.”

Ramsay said crews are expected to begin repairing some of the lights in two weeks.

Initially, FDOT told Monroe County it couldn’t start the project for months, and referenced the amount of lights also out in Miami-Dade County.

“I told FDOT I don’t care,” Ramsay said. “My problem is Monroe. These lights, that FDOT told us we needed for safety reasons, haven’t worked for one and a half years. They’ve got to find the money, because we can’t wait until 2020.”

Ramsay said the unlit streets cause safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

“I hope to see marked improvements,” Ramsay said. “We won’t solve it overnight because of the financial aspect, but it will get better.”

rime Group has completed the first step in building workforce housing for its staff in Marathon by applying for, and receiving, a conditional use permit. The plan is to build 45 workforce housing units at the former Longhorn Lodge site, across from The Art Studio.

“We’ve already built some workforce housing units across the street from our Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo to take care of our own workforce,” said Jorge Cepero, a Prime Group representative. In Marathon, Prime Group has the Courtyard Marriott. Cepero told the Marathon Planning Commission it needs to retain good employees in the Keys in order to offer the best customer service.

Cepero said the planned project would house mostly resort workers, but in the event there are surplus units, those would be available to the general public. He also told Marathon Planning Commissioner Mike Cinque that this would not be a “tax credit” project, and financing would be secured through the business’ normal channels.

In addition to the 45 units, Prime Group plans on building dry boat storage on the waterside of the property, and retail space at the highway edge of the property. Right now, the site has six building rights assigned to it.

Prime Group has made an application for the workforce building rights from

Marathon’s portion of 300 of the 1,300 granted by the state following Hurricane Irma. It is the second development to do so, just behind the Seaview Commons project planned for the Coco Plum neighborhood.

Planning Commissioner Mike Leonard also asked Planning Director George Garrett for an accounting of recent and planned workforce and affordable housing units. According to city officials, about 163 units were approved in 2018 and are in some state of planning, permitting or construction.

“Marathon needs a game plan to make sure we don’t go too far the other way and end up with the same problem on the other side,” said Leonard. Garrett told the commission that the city is definitely in need of an “excess of 800 units.”

In other news, the planning board approved the rezoning, new FLUM maps and a conditional use for a property located on the corner of 100th Street and Overseas Highway, located between city hall and the former Pizza Hut. There is an existing duplex on the property and two more are planned for a total of six units.

Both votes were unanimous; Planning Board members Pam Dobson and Jeff Smith were absent.

Marathon Senior Center: Tuesdays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., starting Feb. 5.

Big Pine Senior Center: Thursdays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., starting Feb. 7.

Passarelli returns to Marathon for watercolor workshop Watercolorist Charles Passarelli was one of the original artists in the Pigeon Key Fest and participated for many years when it was held on the island.

In the summer months he teaches in West Palm Beach and in Michigan.

He will conduct his sixth annual workshop on Thursday and Friday, March 14-15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at San Pablo Hall. All levels are welcome.

n the days that followed the opening of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad on Jan. 22, 1912, several events transpired as the direct result in the Marathon area. According to notes put together by Carlton Corliss, an early Marathon historian, it was Jan. 27, 1912 when a motion picture outfit traveled aboard a special train that left Key West, bound for Miami, that would become the first to film the Key Vaca and Marathon area. The camera was secured to the platform of a passenger coach car. Two days later, on Jan. 29, a man named Tom Jones, who had been celebrating the opening of the railroad, drank himself to death and became the second man to be buried at the first white burying ground in Marathon. On Jan. 30, the Knights Key Post Office, previously the terminus of the Over-Sea Railroad, was closed and the mail rerouted to the Marathon Post Office that had opened on Feb. 23, 1909.

Coral Goll Coral Annette Goll was born at the Lower Keys Medical Center, Key West, on Dec. 23, 2018 at 9:48 a.m. She weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long.

She is the daughter of Heather Goeke-Goll, a cake artist at Sweet Savannah’s, and Andrew Goll Jr., a math teacher at Key West High School. They reside in Marathon.

Maternal grandparents are Erica and West Goeke of Richmond, Texas, and Andy and Julie Goll of Marathon.

Coral loves listening to seagulls and watching palm trees sway, according to her parents.

OBITUARIES

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 31, 2019

Geraldine Seckinger Geraldine (Gerry) Seckinger, age 80, resident of Marathon, passed away Jan. 2, 2019 at South Miami Hospital. Gerry was born Dec. 23, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, growing up in New Jersey. Her parents were Charles Patrick Murphy and Retha Burner Murphy. Gerry's passing preceded her husband Owen J. Seckinger by one week.

Her surviving children include John Seckinger, Gwen Seckinger-Brown, Christian Seckinger and Mark Seckinger. She also had a total of 12 grandchildren not including her cat, Lynx.

While attending University in Pennsylvania, Gerry met Owen Seckinger. Gerry and Owen were married on Nov. 24, 1960 in New Jersey, their romance lasting more than 58 years. Gerry had a master’s degree in education and worked as a teacher in the Marathon public schools. She was proud of the many children she taught and had good memories of teaching and of her students in Marathon.

Gerry especially enjoyed traveling with Owen, including trips to Europe, Alaska, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, New Zealand, India, South Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Central America. Gerry and Owen lived in the U.S. Trust Territory of the Mariana Islands, residing alternately between Saipan and Palau while traveling throughout the region for six years before returning to the United States and eventually settling in Marathon.

Gerry was active in San Pablo Catholic Church, Marathon Yacht Club, Sombrero Country Club, and volunteered for the Marathon Seafood Festival and the 7 Mile Bridge run. Gerry enjoyed dancing, and was known for her “Charleston" and loved to sing in church.

She enjoyed playing tennis, yoga, and attending meetings with the Marathon Women’s Group. Gerry was also active in many outdoor activities such as daily walks with Owen, fishing, snorkeling and lobstering. She was always ready to lend a hand.

Gerry participated in and en-

joyed regular family get-togethers, such as Spring Break, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The last family reunion was a timely cruise last year to celebrate her 80th birthday. All her children and grandchildren participated, and culminated the cruise with a celebration of “her.” As sunny and bright as Marathon can be, it will be a little bit darker without her shining light. Gerry will be missed.

Memorial mass will be held for Gerry and Owen Seckinger at San Pablo Catholic Church on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 9:15 a.m. Special thanks to Father Louie.

Owen J. Seckinger Owen J. Seckinger, age 84, resident of Marathon, passed away Jan. 9, 2019 at South Miami Hospital. Owen was born March 30, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pa. His parents were Marie Owen Seckinger (Fisher), and John C. Seckinger. Owen's wife Geraldine (Gerry) passed away one week prior (Jan. 2), while visiting Owen in the hospital.

Owen is survived by his four adult children, including John Seckinger, Gwen Seckinger-Brown, Christian Seckinger and Mark Seckinger, and 12 grandchildren.

Owen was a competitive swimmer, competing in high school and in the Army Olympic Qualifiers, Triathlon, in the 1950s. While working his way through university, Owen met Gerry. They were married Nov. 24, 1960 in New Jersey. They started a family, and moved to Sarasota, Fla., where he worked as a teacher. In 1964 Owen and Gerry seized an opportunity to work as a teacher for the U.S. government in the newly established U.S. Trust Territory of the Mariana Islands, becoming director of education.

Owen took advantage of living in the South Pacific and explored many of the islands and cultures while living there, taking his children with him on many of his trips. Owen understood multiple languages and had respect and clarity for the cultural diversity encountered in the Islands. Owen was an avid photographer and took extensive pictures of the peoples and activities in the islands, highlighting the cultural diversity he encountered. He often used his artifacts, pictures and films in his classroom.

In 1970, Owen and Gerry moved their four children to Pompano Beach, where they quickly realized they needed to be “in the islands.” They spent all their free time camping in the Keys, eventually choosing to make Marathon their new home. In 1973 on the tail winds of a hurricane, the Seckingers moved to Marathon.

Owen taught in the Marathon public school elementary system for many years and was proud of the children he taught and made a difference for. Many times, while in town, former students came up to thank him for his dedication.

For years, Owen could be easily identified with his familiar orange VW Van, seen cruising Marathon.

Hurricane Irma terminated the legacy of his orange van and did extensive damage to their garden, but did not slow Owen and Gerry down.

Owen had a passion for traveling, fishing, snorkeling and the ocean; however, his real passions were gardening and Gerry. Owen loved to travel with his bride of 58 years, and together they took many trips throughout the world.

Owen was active in San Pablo Catholic Church, a member of the Yacht Club, Sombrero Country Club, American Legion, and the Marathon Garden Club. He was a regular volunteer for the Marathon Seafood Festival, and the 7 Mile Bridge run. At the 7 Mile Bridge run, he could often be found holding the finish line tape and reminding us that he was always the “first one at the finish line.”

Memorial mass will be held for Gerry and Owen Seckinger at San Pablo Catholic Church on Sunday, Feb 10 at 9:15 a.m. Special thanks to Father Louie.

Arthur Charles Sims Diego Cordova Arthur Charles Sims was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 3, 1926 and passed away peacefully in Key West on Dec. 20, 2018. He was raised in New York and transferred to several places in his line of work as an electronic engineer and became a Marathon resident in 2015.

He leaves behind two daughters, Joanne Zimmerman (Jim) of Marathon and Pat Price (Scott) of Elmwood Park, NJ.; four grandchildren, Jamie Stevens (Patrick) of Marathon, Rachel Smith (Jeff) of Germany, Patrick Price of Philadelphia, and Corinne Price of Arlington, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Abbigail Stevens and Fisher Stevens of Marathon; his companion dog, Belle (dachshund); and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa Sims, in 1976.

He was a life member of the local American Legion and DAV. He was also a life member of the VFW and held many officer positions, including past district commander in Massachusetts and New Jersey. He was also a life member of the Amvets.

Artie was very patriotic and always had a story to tell. He was no stranger wherever he went.

A memorial service will be held at the American Legion Hall, 4115 Overseas Highway, on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 at 2 p.m.

Diego Cordova, 85 years old, died in his home surrounded by his loved ones on Jan. 26, 2019. Diego was born on Feb. 4, 1933 in Caibarien, Cuba to the late Eusebio and Leonor Cordova.

He was a lifetime fisherman and had a successful business in the fishing industry. He met the love of his life 67 years ago, and they had three children together. He is survived by his son Diego, his daughter Carmen (Fredy), and his daughter Jackie (Luis). Also surviving are seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and the two additional great-grandchildren who will arrive in March. This was the fulfillment of his life, as he was a family man who instilled values of family first and hard work into his children and grandchildren. Diego truly lived life to the fullest through the simple pleasures of chatting with friends and family and spending time supporting all of his grandchildren’s endeavors.

He lovingly showed his children to be strong, tenacious, intelligent, determined, hard-working and to always put family first. Diego was truly an inspiration to all who he touched and will be dearly missed. God bless him. Until we meet again.

t’s been a year since Jesse James Dupree has visited the Keys. In fact, he was here with friend Michael Ballard (“Full Throttle Saloon”) scouting locations for a Southernmost bourbon distillery. And while they took a pass on the Keys (remote, flooding, hurricanes), he and Jackyl bandmates are coming on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17 for the annual Coral Head Music Festival at Marathon Community Park.

Jackyl’s slot starts at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. All the guys will be there.

“Our ‘new’ guy has been with us 20 years,” said Jesse, “so I’m not sure we can call him that.”

Jesse is vocal and guitars, and is joined by brothers Jeffrey (guitar) and Chris Worley (percussion) and Roman Glick (bass). The band’s sound is hailed as equal parts hard rock, heavy metal and Southern rock. Jesse met the Worley brothers more than 30 years ago. “I was playing with another band and they would come to our shows in South Carolina. They would take my guitar player out after the show and wreck him,” Jesse recalls. “Then I ran into them again when they would play at a bar I was managing in Marietta.

Occasionally, I would get out there and join them. People seemed to like that, so we knew we had something special.”

The band formed in 1991 and had a record deal by 1992. Their first album contained gems like “The Lumberjack,” with a bluesy beat, and “Dirty Little Mind.” Jesse said his favorite to perform is “I Stand Alone.” The band has continued to make music all the years, releasing three new albums in the past decade including “Rowyco,” “Best in Show” and “When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide.”

Although the band tours regularly, Jesse is always on the lookout for something new. Way back in 1993, the band was a big fan of the “Beavis and Butt-head” show on MTV. It collaborated with the producers to make a compilation album that eventually sold 3 million copies.

Now, he’s partners with Ballard in the Full Throttle Saloon, the world’s largest biker bar, and the home of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. (Personally, he rides a HarleyDavidson Street Glide.) And he’s developed a line of bourbon — Jesse James Bourbon.

“It doesn’t have that wince on the backside; it’s a bit smoother,” Jesse said. “And it’s half the price of other bourbons, so you can’t afford not to drink it. Two or three generations from now, we’re going to have created one big dysfunctional family.”

Jesse said he and the band are blessed.

“So many cool things have happened to us, with no sign of letting up.”

ere’s a smattering of the talent that will be on display this weekend at the Marathon Community Park as part of the Pigeon Key Art Festival.

It runs Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Event celebrates 25 years of talent

T

he Pigeon Key Art Festival will be celebrating its silver anniversary, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3. The 25-year-old art emporium will be spread through the open-air Marathon Community Park in a tropically themed oasis of exemplary artwork in the form of pottery, paintings, glass, sculpture, photography, jewelry and more. It takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marathon Community Park (MM 49) — not on the island itself.

B.J. Royster and Cary Chen have been invited to be premium artists at the show. Royster recently completed the reef nightscape mural in the park’s bandshell. She said she was approached by the City of Marathon because the former backdrop was washing out musicians in videos and photos.

“I had the vision right then and there,” she said. Although she hadn’t planned to do any more art shows, she acquiesced. “I had done the mural, and Cary Chen and I go way back. We are both very water oriented.”

Guests who come to the show and make a $7 entrance donation receive a voucher good for a half-price ticket for an island tour via boat departing from the Hyatt Faro Blanco hotel within one week of the Festival.

All proceeds benefit the not-for-profit Pigeon Key Foundation’s important research, education programs and restoration projects.

The family-friendly show will feature Chen and Royster painting live, plus more than 55 fine artists, marine and education exhibits as well as beer, wine and frozen drinks made with Key West Legal Rum. Festival fare includes fresh seafood, French crepes, Greek menu, burgers and dogs, smoothies and healthy options along with desserts like ice cream and funnel cakes. A fine art silent auction with original and signed work from Wyland, Guy Harvey, Chen, Alan Maltz and many others will be Saturday.

Chain Reaction, a sound-alike tribute to the legendary ’80s rock band Journey, will entertain from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Marathon Community Park bandshell. Blankets and lawn chairs are permitted but no outside food/drink or pets, please. Parking is free. Entry is $7 for both days, including the concert, and kids 12 and under are free. TWISTED DIMENSIONS ART Lynn and Steve Cebula create these abstract sculptures from wood, painted with acrylic colors, and various upcycled objects. They started out decades ago, creating pieces for themselves. The pieces have themes — music or spirits or games. Most pieces are about 3 feet square.

THE SILVER GROUPER A former Keys snowbird, Anita Whitney can’t shake the sand out of her shoes and returns for the Pigeon Key Art Festival. Her jewelry has a freeform structure punctuated with precious and semi-precious stones. Her designs are inspired by the ocean.

NANCY REYNA FINE ART A Florida native, and retired school teacher, Nancy Reyna is finally ready to be serious about her seriously good art. Although she started showing at orchid events, she has now branched out to art shows. Her watercolor works feature mainly flora, and a few beach scenes.

AYALA GLASS This is Sue Ayala’s third trip to Pigeon Key Art Festival. Her glass art — created with a 5,000-degree torch — features ocean creatures, from fish to sea birds. She lives across the street from the ocean in Daytona, and sells her work exclusively at art shows. She has 40 years of experience.

LOCAL ATHLETES CONQUER FITNESS COMPETITION

iz Kuck and Patrick Stevens of Keys Strength and Conditioning in Marathon took first place in the recent New Year’s Revolution held in Tampa, Fla. The competition consisted of opposite-sex teams of two competing in novice, intermediate, Rx and masters CrossFit division. Kuck and Stevens completed four separate events consisting of multiple exercises testing strength, power, endurance and stamina. Three other teams from KSC were part of the competition: Rob Christiansen and Alyssa Perry; Denise Gomez and Michael Lyne; and Darrell Birkheimer and Cara O’Neil. Kuck said the best part of the competition was the prizes — two slam balls (70 and 100 pounds, respectively), and a women’s barbell and men’s barbell.

“They are new toys for our clients to play with,” Kuck said.

The tennis-like sport is unknown to many, but is growing at an astronomical rate. Thanks to a dedicated group of players in KCB, the Middle Keys are now well-equipped to continue the trend.

As Key Colony resident Ted Fischer explained, “Pickleball is very attractive to the baby boomer generation. Everyone who was an athlete can’t strain themselves as much as they get older.

By shortening the court and lowering the velocity of the ball, it enables people with fast reflexes to be very good at the game.” Pickleball revolves around spin, finesse shots and ball placement rather than strenuous running and power shots.

According to Fischer, pickleball in Key Colony Beach began in 2007 with former tennis pro Hans Kostler. The initial games started on a converted basketball court on 7th Street, but more courts were soon added and resurfaced on 7th and 8th streets as the group grew. Kostler began running beginners’ clinics where newcomers could learn, advance their game, and eventually integrate with the larger group.

As the competitive gatherings grew, a few players applied for grants from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program. The initial grant in the amount of $50,000 was intended to encompass the construction of new courts on 7th Street, upgrades to the existing golf course between 7th and 8th Street, renovations to the existing fitness circuit around the golf course, and construction of a new tiki hut for players to use.

Pickleball is a fast-paced, finesse-based hybrid between tennis and ping pong. Played with wooden or composite paddles, the game’s court is shorter and narrower than a tennis court with a slightly lower net.

Players alternate hitting a hard ball (not unlike a Wiffle ball) over the net until one team commits a fault. The ball’s slower speed allows for accentuated focus on reflexes, spin and finesse, rather than power.

The project was delayed several times due to noise complaints from concerned residents and, of course, Hurricane Irma, but in the spring of 2018, a small group of players revisited their initial goals. Determined to finish the renovations before the grant expired, Mike Alexander spearheaded a new proposal that would satisfy the grant requirements and allow for the construction of four brand new courts on 8th Street. The total cost of the proposed work? $95,000.

Realizing that they would need significant financial help beyond the $50,000 in grant money and the $10,000 pledged by the city, the group promised to raise the additional $35,000 needed to complete the full scope of work outlined in their proposal. Thanks to the generosity of their strong playing group, community organizations, and many local businesses, the fundraising campaign headed by Fischer raised $36,000, and the project was soon completed.

Today, players can be found at the 8th Street courts every day offering competitive games from 7:30 to 11 a.m. USA Pickleball Association skill assessment sheets at the courts allow experienced players to ascertain their approximate skill level and match themselves against similar players, while newcomers can use the courts on 7th Street, play on the newest courts later in the day, or visit the tennis courts at the Marathon Community Park from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays for recreational play.

n the heels of his recent release “Guava Moon Revenge,” author Tom Corcoran was in Marathon on Jan. 24 to talk a little about the book.

Corcoran is the author of eight Alex Rutledge mysteries set in Key West, plus a handful of other non-fiction books. He spoke about his decade in the islands (1970-1980), his craft, the friends he made along the way and some of his memorable experiences, including Hunter S. Thompson’s funeral that featured his friend’s ashes being shot into the sky.

The audience of about 100 people attending the Marathon Friends of the Library series in the parish hall of St. Columba paid particular attention to his advice on writing.

No. 1 Don’t describe or detail your main character too much.

Corcoran said this little tidbit came from friend and author James Hall, who advised against painting yourself into a corner. He said he chose his main character’s name, Alex, “because any name with an ‘X’ always seemed like it had a punch to it.”

No. 2 Don’t cripple your protagonist.

Same source, same premise. “If your main character is in a wheelchair, it’s kind of hard for him to get around.

Or get up, for that matter,” Corcoran said.

No. 3 Make friends with other authors early on, so they’ll write great “blurbs” for the book jacket.

“After I got my first book deal for ‘The Mango Opera,’ the publisher asked me to get some blurbs, which are like quotes about the author or the book. So I asked Jim Harrison and Hunter S. Thompson to write something and I sent them in. The publisher called me back and said, ‘Who the hell are you?’” Corcoran said his publisher was astounded that a first-time author could summon the help of literary giants who wrote “Legends of the Fall” and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

No. 4 Create peripheral characters who are good conduits of information to move the story along.

Corcoran regularly writes characters who are reporters, officers and employees of the post office to feed the Alex Rutledge character information he needs to solve the mystery.

It’s a well-known fact that Tom Corcoran and Jimmy Buffett were contemporaries in Key West during the ’70s. Corcoran, in fact, co-wrote the lyrics to “Cuban Crime of Passion,” and “Fins.” But in his decade in Key West (1970-1980), how did Corcoran keep body and soul together?

What was his job?

Well, he had two. The first was the taco delivery service on a threewheel bicycle. “This long-haired hippie on a bicycle, nicknamed Afro, just rode his bicycle into Sloppy Joe’s, parked it next to my table and walked out without even saying a word. I didn’t even know which restaurant the tacos came from.”

His other job was as a bartender at the Chart Room at the Pier House. Corcoran said he has never written about that time or relayed even parts of the conversation of all the bigwigs — sheriff, city manager, attorneys — who came to watch the women in bikinis every afternoon.

No. 5 Don’t ‘kill’ someone on private property.

Apparently this is a legal black hole. For example, if a character were to die on the front porch of Kenny Chesney’s Key West home, there would be hell to pay.

No. 6 Learn your history and buy the rights.

Corcoran said he turned to history books to learn simple facts about the Keys he did not absorb when he was a full-time resident. (Example: Where did Duval Street get its name?) When they went out of print, Corcoran bought the publishing rights and now sells them in gift shops throughout the Keys. He also writes non-fiction books about cars, mostly muscle cars.

CHAMBER HOSTS BUSINESS BREAKFAST The Marathon Chamber of Commerce is introducing another way to network — over breakfast.

“The Chamber board recognizes that not everyone is able to attend our luncheons or after hours functions,” said Chamber CEO Daniel Samess, “so this is just another opportunity to meet with fellow business-members while enhancing our business skills and abilities.”

The first Business Breakfast is set for Tuesday, Feb. 12, and the plan is to have meetings each quarter. Although the first meeting will have an open format, subsequent breakfasts will likely have a “best practices” theme with specific discussions about hiring, insurance, etc.

Board members and subject matter experts will lead discussions.

“We encourage our chamber members to attend the first breakfast and let us know what they want to learn more about,” said Samess.

There is a local restaurant proprietor who refers to egg yolk as “God’s Gravy,” and the breakfast menu at the Castaway certainly reflects his passion.

Founded on 15th Street in Marathon back in 1951, Mirabella acquired it in 1999 and has spent the past 20 years transforming it from a small seafood shack into one of the most popular restaurants in the Florida Keys.

“Doing a non-traditional breakfast has been my longtime dream,” he said. “Then I had an opportunity to hire a very good breakfast chef who was able to implement my vision” – a vision that includes highend gravy made from pork and bacon, legitimate soft-poached eggs and chicken fried steak made with rib eye.

The breakfast dishes took 10 years to perfect, with Mirabella volunteering to act as a “guinea pig.”

And the dishes’ names are just as much a reflection of the recipe as they are of Mirabella himself.

Take “The Morning After,” a Reuben sandwich, with meat replaced with shrimp. The sunny-side-up eggs make it perfect for dipping.

Or “Crabby Morning,” poached eggs over homemade crab cakes — one of four benedict specials on the daily menu.

Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. but for three hours (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) patrons can order breakfast, lunch, dinner or sushi.

Mirabella bills the restaurant’s sushi as “authentic.” Toro, or the fatty belly of the bluefin tuna can be sampled here along with Uni - which is delivered only on Wednesdays; plan accordingly.

A lot of the Asian appetizers originate from the Philippines. Hamachi collar is a genuine and wonderful Yellowtail treat and Lumpia (ground pork spring rolls) is a “must have” at a Filipino party.

Castaway has 52 beers on tap and they’re halfprice from 3 to 5 p.m.

While the breakfast menu doesn’t change very often, the rest of it is “subject to change,” with new specials weekly. So, don’t wait too long to try Elk Chop Dinner or Buffalo Ribeye and make Castaway your destination while they are still on the menu.

‘We’re all locals’ The man behind the canal cleanup

B

elow budget, on schedule, no negative issues and most of all, tons and tons of debris removed. Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental, Inc. is leading the canal cleanup to the finish line, and director Greg Tolpin says it’s gone quite well as he looks to conclude mid-March.

“We’re all locals living here,” he said. “Knowing these waters and working in these canals for the past 25 years, it gave us the unique ability to know where the challenges were going to be and how to overcome them prior to starting the job.”

Tolpin is a 30-year resident of the Keys. Founded by Chris Colarusso and Tolpin in 1997, Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead canal cleanup, and he had the effort ramped up from day one. Tolpin said he is grateful to the county and the entire community for their support in helping complete the project on time and under budget.

“We hit the ground running and there was no learning curve,” Tolpin said. “We were ready to go and we haven’t looked back. We’re going to feel good when it’s all done.”

CANAL CLEANUP NEARING COMPLETION, DREDGING TO BEGIN

Marine debris removal is all but complete in Islamorada and Marathon, but continues in unincorporated Monroe County. MONROE COUNTY/Contributed

government project that’s under budget and scheduled to be completed a month or more ahead of time? Yes. Monroe County’s project to clean up canals clogged with Hurricane Irma debris is projected to come in under budget by as much as $11 million. That includes “extra” canals that were added to the original project’s scope without increasing the cost.

And now it includes some dredging projects as well, or what the county calls “sediment removal.”

As of late January, 79 percent of the 172 canals have been cleared and only 31 percent of the budget has been spent — $14.2 million of $45.8 million. And there’s time to spare, too, with 60 days left to complete the project.

Initially, the county requested approval of the cleanup of 102 canals in Islamorada, Marathon, and unincorporated parts of the county such as Big Pine Key. Then it asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Services to approve an additional 69 canals. Done. Then, it submitted another 16 for review, but only one — located behind the courthouse in Marathon — received an OK. “We have 172 canals approved for service and have only 32 canals remaining,” said Monroe County Sustainability Director Rhonda Haag. “There have been no safety or environmental concerns. We see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

At a recent meeting of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, she told the commission that not one dollar of county money has been invested. The bulk of the money is coming from the federal government, with the 25 percent matching funds paid out of Stewardship Act funds.

When it became apparent that there would be surplus funds, the county began submitting requests for sediment removal under the same grant. While Islamorada had some debris in the canals, the worst problems in the village boundaries were associated with sand-choked canals, making navigation possible only for shallow draft boats.

Haag said the county submitted a list of 34 canals to be dredged to the USDA. That has already been knocked down to 18 canals, still under review. The sedimentclogged canals have been identified in Big Pine Key (10), Marathon (3), and Islamorada (5). If those projects are approved, there would still be a surplus of $11.8 million.

Haag credited the hard work of the contractors.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental (see opposite page) was hired by the county to lead the cleanup. Working with Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island, the workforce numbers about 60 people using four grapple trucks, five sonar boats and 15 barges. Wood Environment is monitoring the work.

If there’s a wrinkle, it’s the going rate of what it costs to get things done in the Keys.

The federal grant only covers a 7.5 percent fee for auditing work, though the county agreed to a 10 percent fee. The discrepancy means Wood Environmental is waiting on a partial payment of $173,000 of work it has performed.

“The going rate for monitoring costs is about 7.5 percent, but marine debris monitoring costs are usually 10 percent,” said Haag, adding that the state is aware of the conflict and has agreed to pay the differential.

According to the county, canal debris cleanup continues in unincorporated Monroe County and one canal in Marathon. The work in Islamorada is complete.

Fundraising efforts are underway as four contestants vie for the ultimate prize of a heavy Big Kahuna trophy. It’s all for a good cause, as funds raised through March 13 will go to support the Good Health Clinic and its mission to provide health care to low-income and uninsured residents in the Keys. It has two clinics in the Keys — one in the Upper Keys, and the other on the east end of Marathon located at 13365 Overseas Hwy., Ste. 101. Alina Davis has eagerly entered the Big Kahuna contest and has enlisted past Big Kahuna winner Capt. Skip Bradeen as her campaign manager.

TOM MORRISON

Thomas Morrison is medical director at Mariners Hospital Emergency Department and Fishermen’s Hospital.

Raised in the South Miami area, he attended undergraduate and graduate school at a medical school in Ohio. He then went to New Orleans for surgical internship /residency. Morrison returned to Miami for a second internship and residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Family Medicine Program. He was hospitalist at Jackson South Community Hospital and ER doctor at South Miami and Homestead hospitals.

“When Kate Banick asked me to become a ‘Kahuna’ I was honored to accept,” Morrison said. “I have personally seen Good Health Clinic help and save patients as they come through my emergency departments. Health care is unaffordable on the best of days. When you are a server, clerk, bartender, landscaper and assistant chef — health insurance isn’t available.

Eventually they will need help; this is where the Good Health Clinic steps in.”

On Saturday, Feb. 2, there will be a Casino Night fundraiser at Lions Club, located at 5 Homestead Ave., in Key Largo. Doors open at 6 p.m. with games starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. Prizes will be announced at 9:45 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include food by Sea Creatures Café and games featuring roulette, blackjack, craps and slots. Dealers will be on hand to teach people how to play.

WALT STEPHENS

Walt Stephens is the director of safety loss control and procurement at Florida Keys Electric Cooperative (FKEC). He is originally from Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, and has worked in the electric utility industry since 1993.

He has worked at a rural electric cooperative since 1998 where he has been responsible for safety, loss control, risk management and procurement. Stephens is certified by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Associations as a loss control professional. He has been a resident of Islamorada and employed at FKEC for three years. His hobbies include fishing, boating and golf.

Stephens is a member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club and a graduate of Leadership Monroe County. When asked to help raise funds for the Good Health Clinic, he was more than willing. “The Good Health Clinic is a great asset to our community,” he said, “by improving and at times saving lives through health care with diagnosis, treatment and prevention.”

On Saturday, Feb. 9 at Islamorada Beer, there will be a corn hole tournament and party. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $20. Party includes 50/50s, food, prize drawings and raffle.

onroe County Fire Rescue Station 8 crew Raymond Zamora, Rafael Calante, Andrea Thompson and Brandon King — and Trauma Star Flight crew Roger Torres and Pedro Carrillo — were honored Jan. 26 with the Phoenix Award for saving a 47-year-old man who was in full cardiac arrest. Monroe County Fire Rescue Captain Ryan Johnson presented the awards.

The Phoenix Award, named for the mythical bird that rises from the ashes unscathed, is presented to emergency responders who restore life to a patient and that patient is able to return to a similar quality of life. The average survival rate for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is about 10 percent, according to the American Heart Association.

In mid-January, crew from Station 8 rescue met Ricky Bryan in Miami for an emotional and joyful reunion. Bryan, from Perryville, Md., was in full cardiac arrest with no pulse when they responded Jan. 2 to a medical emergency at Boyd’s Campground on Stock Island. Bryan’s close friend had begun CPR. Monroe County’s medically trained firefighters took over and for the next 30 minutes continued the life-saving efforts, which included 10 defibrillations. Bryan coded five times before the crew was able to stabilize him enough to be flown by the county’s Trauma Star air ambulance, piloted by Ralph Rios, to the University of Miami Hospital.

Bryan, who was an avid runner before the incident, said he should be able to start running again upon completion of his 36week cardio rehabilitation program. Laughing, he also added that his ribs are still sore.

any runners came out last year to “scale the whale.” This year, the event is back, as participants prepare for some fun on an old, familiar bridge.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, Chi Sigma sorority, chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, will hold its second annual Whale Harbor Bridge Run. The event is all for a good cause, as proceeds go toward scholarships for Coral Shores students and a scholarship in memory of Holly Given.

“Being it was our inaugural year and we scheduled it on the same day as the 7-mile bridge run, we think it was a great success,” said Sandy El-Koury, sorority member and organizer. “We were able to raise almost $3,000 for student scholarships and we were also able to make a sizable contribution to the domestic abuse shelter in the name of Holly Given.”

Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. at the tent in front of Wahoo’s, with participants off and running at 10 a.m. Registration for those 21 and younger is $20. For those over 21, registration is $30 and includes entry into the race, a T-shirt, two beer tickets from Islamorada Beer Company, ditty bag and lunch ticket provided by Whale Harbor. Those 21 and under get a T-shirt, treat ticket, ditty bag and lunch ticket by Whale Harbor.

“We are predicting this year to bigger and better. We have come up with ideas to improve and expand,” El-Koury said.

“We have added vendors for the runners and spectators to enjoy, a DJ to help keep the party going and a costume contest for anyone who wants to dress up.”

The race will end around 10:30 a.m. as runners trek the entire length of the bridge. Upon reaching the north end of the bridge, runners grab a doughnut for a fuel boost before heading back across. At the doughnut tent, there will also be water to stave off dehydration. After the race, stick around, eat and enjoy what Wahoo’s and Whale Harbor have to offer.

El-Koury said spectators are welcome to come cheer on their runners. There will be police in attendance for safety. If you like to have a good time and don’t take things too seriously … this race is for you!

illy Kearins isn’t new to serendipity.

His workshop space-turned music venue-turned lifestyle brand Coast has been a product of hard work, and also, happenstance. The motto, which Kearins calls “purposely ambiguous” is “Coast. Live by it.”

Kearins moved back to Key West from Copenhagen six years ago and was looking for a work space. Self-trained as a builder (of boats and boards among other things), Upon return, he visited his old Shrimp Road studio. “And literally that day I visited, they were knocking it down.”

Instead, like any good islander, he went to have a bite and a beer. “I basically hopped into my buddy’s truck, and we were headed to Hogfish,” he said. They saw the lot on Front Street with a “for rent” sign. “It was bigger than what I was looking for ... but it seemed like it had a lot of potential.” Kearins (and a rotating cast of friends, craftsmen, and fellow artists) built it out, creating open-air studios, common space, and ultimately, a stage.

“During this time I developed the Coast brand,” he said, “But it wasn’t really a brand back then, it was a community of craftsmen by the sea.” Kearins describes those early years with nostalgia, and it’s easy to look at the seaside gravel lot and

imagine it animated with people creating things. He describes their Friday afternoon beers, accompnaied by the sounds of a local band (they offered the lot as a free practice space).

“During the first couple of years, there were a lot of building projects: local companies hired us to do artistic carpentry, anything from painting a mural to building a boat.” During that time, a Brooklyn artist named Duke Riley worked at Coast, building bird coops and training homing pigeons. He ultimately trained them to fly from Havana, Cuba to Key West, “carrying illicit cigars and cameras to record the journey” (according to a New York Times story). Kearins describes it as a time of “renegade art.”

Art begat music. “There wasn’t this type of live music venue in Key West,” he said. Through parties and gatherings with local musicians, the idea of inviting bands to Coast bloomed. Soon, Coast was hosting — and selling out — acts like Mason Jennings and G Love and the Special Sauce. “Everybody wondered how we did it,” Kearins laughed, “And it’s like, ‘You just have to ask.’”

This is the peak magic moment in the Coast story, if you could nail one down.

“We were going on full cylinders, doing big projects, selling out shows, the studio was full, and we were riding that wave for several years. … But I knew it wasn’t a sustainable model.”

He was right. The shows were paying for themselves but not making money, and Stock Island continued to be just a little too far to drive for Key Westers.

Kearins said he was happy to see new venues in town, and Coast drifted out of the music business with the ease it drifted in.

Then the story returns to where it started: Kearins was contemplating leaving the Stock Island lot, riding his bike down Whitehead Street, and he saw another “For Rent” sign. Within a week, he was in the new space, building it out, stocking merchandise. “I took the leap,” he said, “and I figured, now it’s time. I could have waited, but that’s not really my style.”

They are now selling apparel and handmade skateboards at the Coast Outpost at 803 Whitehead St. They are also hosting Yonder Mountain String Band in Feb. [see box]. Coast continues to evolve: Kearins hints at a “strategic partnership” for new Keys-based ventures, and he took an East Coast road trip over the summer to scout new outposts with local flavor.

Kearins has his sights set on expansion and innovation, starting studios and retail spaces in “other funky end-of-the-road places.” But expansion doesn’t mean popping up in every mall in America. “I don’t want it to be a false brand, where it’s a sticker or a label. And I always want to have an anchor in Key West. I picture Key West as the end of the road, and the only way you can leave here is by going up.”

It wasn’t really a brand back then, it was a community of craftsmen by the sea.

Marathon Boys Basketball wins again The Marathon High School varsity basketball team won its fourth game in a row, beating Somerset Academy Silver Palms 57-45 on Jan. 25 in Marathon. The Dolphins dominated the game from opening tip to the final slam dunk, despite missing two starting players. “I thought we played well,” Coach Kevin Freeman said after the game. “Steven Hernandez and Jamal Qualls did a good job of controlling the tempo and we thought Enoc Campos, Carlos Roque, and Parker Konrath did a great job on the defensive end.”

MORE STRANGE GIGS Actual tales from a life in music…

M

y column about strange gigs last week got some (favorable!) response.

Having played music full time since 1982, I figure I’m closing in on the 10,000th live performance — if I haven’t already passed that milestone. So even though it’s nigh on impossible to remember all the shows, there really are some standouts.

For roughly three years in the early 1980s, Sallie Foster and I toured the eastern seaboard of these United States as a duo, from Scranton, Pa. to the Keys and the Bahamas. We had a couple of booking agents at the time, and they would send us to a variety of hotel bars and clubs that were much nicer than the average roadhouse.

Even so, there was no shortage of characters and situations that I can remember to this day.

For instance, in Scranton, we played this combination bar and restaurant at the Sheraton. The restaurant featured Italian cuisine and was called Caesar’s. Busts of different Roman emperors were featured in backlit alcoves framed in deep red curtains — right out of a cheesy movie set. The bar was outfitted with what could only have been early 1970s game-show furniture surplus. Purple sparkle tuck-nroll upholstery went perfectly with seriously mod tables that could have come straight from The Dating Game. And there were floor-toceiling mirrors on most of the walls — perfect for controlling sound in a nightclub.

We were in the middle of a song on a Friday night when a group of young men, high on beer and testosterone, made their way to the exit. The exit was placed strategically close to the stage for no apparent reason. As the boys were leaving in a jocular fashion, one of them decided to good-naturedly push another into our speaker, causing untold hijinks and hilarity as it toppled into and shattered the mirrored wall behind it.

There was this bar in Sumter, S.C. Sumter is a military town, home to Shaw Air Force Base … and other things, too, I’m sure. Sallie and I set up, turned on the stage lights, and began playing our first set. A couple of songs in, a manager came up to us and asked us to turn the

stage lights down to almost off. When I asked why, he said that this was the local cheaters’ hangout, and low lighting helped keep identities secret. Oh, and would JOHN you play a lot of BARTUS slow belly-rubbing songs? is the mayor of Another South the City of Marathon. He also is Carolina standa musician who out gig was at the performs around Holiday Inn for New town. For more Year’s Eve 1983 in see johnbartus.

Santee. Santee is a com small town at the intersection of I-95 and Lake Moultrie. The Holiday Inn had the only club around, and it did a brisk business. So the manager’s idea was to maximize revenue and have two parties. We would play the main lounge, while he hired another band to play the hotel’s converted meeting space. Then he’d serve breakfast to all the partygoers at the hotel’s restaurant. The spanner in the works was the fact that South Carolina still had restrictive blue laws that mandated all drinks be off the bar and no more served by midnight on Saturday.

As you can surmise, New Year’s Eve was a Saturday night that year.

And the manager didn’t want both of his parties descending upon the restaurant at the same time. His big idea: we would do our New Year countdown 15 minutes early at 11:45, and shoo everyone out to the restaurant. The meeting space party would get to do theirs at the correct time.

It was an unmitigated disaster. At 11:44, when we called out that there was just one minute left in 1983, we got strange looks. When we started the countdown, “10… 9… 8…,” people looked at their watches and proceeded to ignore us. After we sang “Auld Lang Syne” and tried to get the festive partygoers to mosey their way to the restaurant, they were having none of it. I recall them waiting until the Times Square countdown showed up on a bar TV, counting down and officially welcoming 1984, and then joining the cluster foxtrot of semi-soused revelers all wanting breakfast NOW. Perhaps next week, I’ll reveal what happened all those years ago in Lynchburg, Virginia. Until then, see you at the gig!

s well as being connected by the iconic Overseas Highway, the 125-mile-long Florida Keys island chain is connected by a vibrant community of artists. From now through May 3, art lovers can view a 24-foot mural featuring the work of close to 400 creative spirits during a series of seven exhibitions throughout the Keys. “The Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys” comprises nearly 400 individual canvases measuring 6 inches square that were provided to artists and artsminded local residents. Their works — in media ranging from oils and watercolor to photography, mixed media and quilting — showcase subjects

including birds and sea life, palms and waterfront scenes, abstract visions and local landmarks.

“The mural’s ‘road show’ tour from Key Largo to Key West celebrates the longstanding connection between the community and local cultural initiatives,” said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, which spearheaded the project. The next opening reception is Thursday, Jan. 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Roberto Russell Gallery at Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty, located at 81888 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. The event, sponsored by Ocean Sotheby’s, includes wine and hors d’oeuvre.

Roosevelt Blvd., before ending its tour April 24May 3 at Key West’s Gato Building, the headquarters of the arts council at 1100 Simonton St. A free opening-day reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. is scheduled at each location.

After viewing the installation, art lovers can add pieces of it to their collection. Patrons can make a $50 donation for one individual canvas or a $125 donation for three at any reception or online at keysarts.com.
