he City Commission will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. at City Hall to revisit major issues of concern affecting Key West.

At the top of the agenda is a proposal for the city to request additional grant funding from the EPA for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act. This funding is for City of Key West Stormwater Improvements project, to extend to water quality projects affecting wastewater

and canal improvement. There is also a resolution requesting upwards of $6 million from the Monroe County Land Authority for constructing workforce housing on College Road.

Likely most discussed will be: the proposed cosmetic shop ordinance, amending a code to provide tighter restrictions for stores practicing unlicensed cosmetology; the ordinance proposing restricting the sale of oxybenzone and octinoxate chemicals in sunscreens and other cosmetics; and Continued on page 9

AIRPORT REPORT EYW NUMBERS TAKING OFF

T

he government shutdown did not shut down the Key West Airport. According to Senior Director of Airports Richard Strickland, the airport operated “just fine” during the last month and in fact, it is moving in a positive direction. Residents should be pleased with the numbers and what is now a solid rebound from the effects of Irma last season. With increased far-reaching non-stop flights, tourists and residents choosing air travel over driving and improvements planned for the airport, EYW is flying in the right direction.

The proof is in the numbers, and the Pax statistics, the industry term for passengers, showed a 14 percent increase for 2018 of people coming and going through air travel.

For 2017, Pax total was 763,557; that jumped to 870,237 in 2018, meaning 106, 680 more passengers than the previous year.

“Seat capacity (more chances for passengers to get here or there) is going up 15 percent in the first quarter of 2019,” said Strickland, “ Next year, we could top a million passengers in total,” continued Strickland.

American and Delta are the largest carriers, bringing in and out more than 300,000 passengers.

“What people didn’t understand is when Southwest pulled out, they were too dependent on smaller cities, too localized,” said Strickland. “Now we have large network carriers that allow people to get here from 50 different cities. It’s an incredible reach.” The airport serves 11 different markets, serviced

by American, Delta, Silver and United. Nonstop flights now exist to Washington, D.C., Newark, Dallas, and Chicago O’Hare. On Feb. 16, American will launch a non-stop flight to Philadelphia, and on March 9, Delta will go non-stop to LaGuardia. Both services will be in season but if passenger demand increases, Strickland is confident the carriers will be looking at increasing flights that have limited days at the start.

“It’s a very positive situation,” said Virginia Panico of the Chamber of Commerce.

“What is most beneficial is more people are flying, not driving, to the Keys, and hopefully that eliminates some of the traffic congestion. Also, it allows residents more options to get where they want to go.” Panico works with Strickland, lobbying airlines for these new routes.

“The airport has a very bright future,” said Strickland, who is also looking toward future physical improvements. First, the tower, damaged by Irma, should be renovated and completed by the end of 2019.

The 2017 ramp (where the planes park for loading and unloading) reconstruction is complete with the old asphalt changed to more durable and longlasting concrete.

The runway will not be lengthened, but the airfield will have a “geometry change,” according to Strickland. It will be reconfigured as a bypass taxiway, allowing for increased safety and improved options for taking off — planes can be moved out of the way when in line for smoother coordination.

The even bigger news is that the director is in the beginning phases of envisioning a new terminal, including jet bridges, pending planning and permitting. The goal is to complete a new terminal in five years. “We have to look long-term and make sure the next generations have the opportunity to come and experience Key West,” said Strickland.

CANAL CLEANUP NEARING COMPLETION, DREDGING TO BEGIN

Marine debris removal is all but complete in Islamorada and Marathon, but continues in unincorporated Monroe County. MONROE COUNTY/Contributed

government project that’s under budget and scheduled to be completed a month or more ahead of time? Yes. Monroe County’s project to clean up canals clogged with Hurricane Irma debris is projected to come in under budget by as much as $11 million. That includes “extra” canals that were added to the original project’s scope without increasing the cost.

And now it includes some dredging projects as well, or what the county calls “sediment removal.”

As of late January, 79 percent of the 172 canals have been cleared and only 31 percent of the budget has been spent — $14.2 million of $45.8 million. And there’s time to spare, too, with 60 days left to complete the project.

Initially, the county requested approval of the cleanup of 102 canals in Islamorada, Marathon, and unincorporated parts of the county such as Big Pine Key. Then it asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Services to approve an additional 69 canals. Done. Then, it submitted another 16 for review, but only one — located behind the courthouse in Marathon — received an OK. “We have 172 canals approved for service and have only 32 canals remaining,” said Monroe County Sustainability Director Rhonda Haag. “There have been no safety or environmental concerns. We see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

At a recent meeting of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, she told the commission that not one dollar of county money has been invested. The bulk of the money is coming from the federal government, with the 25 percent matching funds paid out of Stewardship Act funds.

When it became apparent that there would be surplus funds, the county began submitting requests for sediment removal under the same grant. While Islamorada had some debris in the canals, the worst problems in the village boundaries were associated with sand-choked canals, making navigation possible only for shallow draft boats.

Haag said the county submitted a list of 34 canals to be dredged to the USDA. That has already been knocked down to 18 canals, still under review. The sedimentclogged canals have been identified in Big Pine Key (10), Marathon (3), and Islamorada (5). If those projects are approved, there would still be a surplus of $11.8 million.

Haag credited the hard work of the contractors.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead the cleanup. Working with Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island, the workforce numbers about 60 people using four grapple trucks, five sonar boats and 15 barges. Wood Environment is monitoring the work.

If there’s a wrinkle, it’s the going rate of what it costs to get things done in the Keys.

The federal grant only covers a 7.5 percent fee for auditing work, though the county agreed to a 10 percent fee. The discrepancy means Wood Environmental is waiting on a partial payment of $173,000 of work it has performed.

“The going rate for monitoring costs is about 7.5 percent, but marine debris monitoring costs are usually 10 percent,” said Haag, adding that the state is aware of the conflict and has agreed to pay the differential.

According to the county, canal debris cleanup continues in unincorporated Monroe County and one canal in Marathon. The work in Islamorada is complete.

the proposed Duval Promenade Pilot Program.

The sunscreen ordinance, sponsored by Commissioners Mary Lou Hoover and Jimmy Weekley, will return to the agenda for a second vote. Commissioner Sam Kaufman has proposed a resolution asking the Sustainability Board to present a report to the commission in one year from the reading (Feb. 5, 2020) “on the efficacy of sunscreens that do not contain oxybenzone and/or octinoxate, and on progress made by the sunscreen industry to introduce alternative sunscreen UVA filters in the market … (and) on the impact of sunscreens on the reef.”

Kaufman also is proposing moving the effective date of the ordinance to Jan. 1, 2021, allowing an additional year for retailers to comply.

Said Kaufman: “I did this as a compromise. I’m hoping we can have a unanimous commission vote adopting the ban. We would be the first in the continental United States enacting a ban on these chemicals.” He also said it offered time to address “legitimate concerns” from the community and give the industry an opportunity to get FDA approval for new products. This would also put the Key West sunscreen ban on the same timeline as Hawaii, the only other place that has adopted a measure banning certain chemicals contained in sunscreen. With the vocal concerns of Commissioners Gregory Davila and Clayton Lopez in mind, Kaufman said: “I was thinking: how do we get everyone on board?”

Said Weekley: “I don’t have a problem with the amendment.” He acknowledged the new timeline was reasonable. He said: “My question for the Sustainability Board is will they have to hire someone to look into the effects; is this something someone could do locally? When it came up on the first reading, it was mentioned that

the (Sustainability Board) had unanimously passed a resolution to support the ban.”

Weekley has also been in meetings with the group behind the “Mall on Duval,” the supporters of the Promenade pilot program. Carl Fischer, the executive director, has met with the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Teri Johnston, as well as business owners to garner support for his effort.

The proposal outlines the experimental closing of the 500-700 blocks of Duval Street to auto traffic on Friday and Saturday nights, from 5 p.m. to midnight, for 11 weekends beginning President’s Day, Feb. 15. Fischer has urban models in mind, like Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and the Lincoln Road Mall in Miami, but says that Duval Street would be a unique pedestrian mall with local flavor.

“The south and north ends of Duval have their own brands,” he said, adding that he envisions central Duval as an opportunity to “revitalize downtown through a pilot approach.”

Fischer is pursuing ideas like partnering with nonprofits and creating local events like pet adoption fairs and oudoor film nights. Establishments will be allowed to move tables 17 feet from their businesses into the sidewalk and street.

“I think it’s a good quality of life boost and economic boost for the community. Locals could go down and enjoy it or avoid it,” said Jack Dingeman, co-owner of Mangoes Restaurant at 700 Duval. Not all feel the same.

“Who is going to shut the streets down?” Asks former Commissioner and owner of Rick’s and Sloppy Joe’s Mark Rossi. “I have 35 years of my life owning businesses here ... if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If approved, the inaugural night of the “Mall on Duval” will be Feb. 15.

on’t call her Darlene; she’s a Dar through and through. She’s also the first one to tease that her name is of Danish origin, before revealing the “-lene” part existed until she was 5. Originally from Crystal Lake, Illinois, Dar Castillo is not quite what is expected, and she’s wryly funny to boot. The owner of Affiliated Design & Construction Managers LLC, along with partner Teri Johnston of 36 years, now Mayor Johnston, Castillo is one half of a very successful partnership in business, politics and, even better, family.

While she does not need the spotlight, Castillo has proven to be a driving force behind a winning political campaign, a construction business mostly dominated by men and a close-knit family. Let’s throw in the blue ribbon for the Christmas lights competition, and she is simply crushing it. Amazingly unfazed by it all, Castillo doesn’t think she has a motto or life credo, but she does. She pays attention to people, listens and helps them build their futures, whether it’s her employees, her clients, her cherished Key West community, a partner dedicated to politics or their two daughters and four granddaughters who always come first. With an affectionate smile, Castillo humbly gets to business on all accounts, and that is winning.

Do you have a life credo or motto? I work hard every day at creating and maintaining a loving, secure and comfortable home for my family in which we all can be without judgment.

How would you like to see the city evolve in the future? I would love to see every homeowner, tenant, landlord and business pitch in to make Key West clean and pristine.

The construction industry is vital for employment and growth in Key West. What are some of your keys to success? The success of Affiliated Design & Construction Managers LLC is founded on our quality, long-time employees and craftsmen, our attention to the smallest detail from the start of a project to completing our punch work and our ability to bring the product in on time and within budget. With limited space in Key West, I design our homes so that every inch of available space is usable.

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? To be the #1 community in the United States for kids to grow up in.

When people come to you for help, what do they want? My most frequent request is for design ideas, redesigning current spaces and the estimated cost of doing so.

What quirks do you have? Multitasking ... talking on the phone in the shower or the restroom or while preparing an entire meal. No one ever knows for sure what I’m actually doing.

What question would you most like to know the answer to? Why is it that for every action, there is an equal and greater criticism?

Lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Kamala Harris. Would like to know her position on many issues important to Key West. If not available, Ellen DeGeneres to talk about her successes and to laugh.

What job would you be terrible at? I would be a terrible doctor. Not good at bodily functions or fluids.

How did you get into construction? With a degree in interior design, continued education in architectural design and construction management, I was hired by a large developer to revamp all of their model homes. The project worked out so well that I was rehired to redesign all of the exteriors and interior layouts for several significant developments. From there, I started my own business in 1984 and have been restoring homes and creating modern floor plans since. (Her Key West homes have won historic preservation awards for construction and design.)

What have you only recently formed an opinion about? That being mayor requires 50 hours a week to work on issues and 10-15 hours to meet social obligations.

You were a force behind the scenes of Teri’s campaign. What was your strategy? Our strategy was to keep focused on the critical path, and it was essential to keep Teri focused on meeting as many people as possible. We

Favorite guilty pleasure? I think that is a contradiction of terms, but my bit of indulgence sometimes is reading or having to justify your reading choice. This makes reading a minimum of two books at the same time essential.

If invisible in Key West, what would you do?

The truth is I think that playing tricks and pranking people would be fun. Nothing too nasty, and I have a list of friends who are candidates.

Who is your alter ego? My alter ego would be a constitutional lawyer and would donate 100 percent of my time serving the less fortunate.

Finish these sentences: My friends and family would describe me as ... My best friend said two things: If I only had one call to make it would be to me (True, I can figure out or fix most anything). Also, that I was focused with a huge heart. Our daughter described me as a loving and fun grandma.

My autobiography would be titled … Family first (includes extended family) I can never refuse … A moment with our granddaughters.

When I go, I will go … Knowing that I was, first, the best mom I could be; second, the most loyal, supportive partner I could be; third, a “kissy face” fun grandma; fourth, best friend; fifth, hardest working person you will ever meet; and sixth, have never shared a secret.

County considers giving out fewer building rights per year SARA MATTHIS

T

he Monroe County Board of Commissioners has decided to stretch out its new building allocations by reducing the number it awards each year.

Right now, the county gives out the rights to build 126 new market rate homes every year until 2023, when the state has said it can no longer issue new development rights. County staff has been directed to come up with a couple of scenarios to extend the deadline for another three years, to 2026.

Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley told the commissioners the benefits of doing so, and added that 2023 is “not the absolute end.”

“In 2020, there will be a new census and the state will re-conduct its hurricane model based on that data.

The census information should come out in 2021 or 2022,” Hurley said.

“Then the state can make a determination on whether there is any more room for ROGO allocations they could award to the county or city.”

The move also staves off any “takings” lawsuits by another three years — so long as there are still some new development allocations to be distributed, there is no lawsuit.

The year 2023 is a somewhat self-imposed deadline. In 2012 the state, county and municipalities counted how many new development allocations remained, that would still allow them to meet the 24-hour hurricane evacuation of all residents in 24 hours, and the parties divvied them up. That rate of distribution was then written into the county’s and cities’ comprehensive plans. Extending the timeline requires an amendment, and the process — from committee, to Planning Commission, to the BOCC, to the state Department of Economic Opportunity, and back to the BOCC again — allows plenty of opportunity for public input.

Public comments were all in favor of delaying the 2023 deadline.

“We feel it is a critical issue to make the ROGOs last longer,” said Joyce Newman, on behalf of Last Stand. “It would demonstrate good faith to the state and federal governments and provide more time to establish trust and land acquisition funding partnership.”

Bill Hunter said, “It’s the most logical thing to do.”

The BOCC is not making any hasty steps, however, in accepting its share of the extra 1,300 affordable housing units awarded by the state. It has decided to take a “wait and see” position until the challenge to City of Marathon’s decision to accept its share (300), is resolved by an administrative judge. That may not be until late April.

Commissioner Heather Carruthers asked if there was an expiration date on the state’s offer and staff replied in the negative.

That opened another vein of conversation — because the extra allocations were awarded by the former governor and cabinet and did not go through the regular rule-making process, it’s possible that the current administration could rescind the offer or, conversely, grant thousands more to cover all the vacant parcels and completely eliminate the threat of takings lawsuits and the related financial obligations.

Next week: County staff offers suggestions on existing policies, programs and actions to further mitigate the financial and legal ramifications of vacant, privately owned parcels without building rights.

WHILE DEBATE ON SUNSCREEN CONTINUES, OTHER STEPS HELP

H

elp! First the plastic straws go.

Now sunscreen? Is it true that our sunscreen chemicals can damage the reefs? While our community health might Dr. Stanley Sack be better by avoiding those plastic straws, and especially the liquid that most often passes through them, we can’t necessarily say that avoiding sunscreen has those same happy consequences for our well-being.

While the city commission still hasn’t ruled on the sunscreen debate, we’ve had excellent discussions about the uses and potential hazards of oxybenzone and octinoxate, the controversial sunscreen chemicals.

One thing that has come out of this debate: a “teachable moment” regarding sun protection for kids. Let’s focus on what families can do regardless of their stance on the oxybenzone/octinoxate ordinance. But first, let’s take a brief look at why our worries go beyond the discomfort of a sunburn.

The increased risk of skin cancer from sun exposure is real — and not only the common, treatable cancers that affect older adults. There’s good evidence that sun exposure increases the risk of more serious, often fatal cancer known as melanoma.

While melanoma is not common in children, constituting only 1 percent to 4 percent of all cases, sun exposure in childhood affects the likelihood of getting the disease later. Even one childhood sunburn has been found to double the chance of melanoma.

Despite all of this, there is some good news: sun protection goes beyond using sunscreen. Let’s look at some of the ways that you can protect the younger set (and yourself), while we see how the debate surrounding the proposed ordinance plays out.

First of all, when at all possible, arrange any sun exposure for the beginning or end of the day when those rays are less strong and therefore less risky. Use that time for sun time; during the noon hour, move into a shady spot (shade doesn’t offer total protection, but it’s better than direct sunlight) or cover up.

Speaking of covering up: clothing does provide good sun protection when done right. Consider a light layer of long-sleeve clothing. Manufacturers of “summer” clothing (however long in the year it’s worn) sometimes will put an “ultraviolet protection factor” on the label. If not, you can usually hold a piece of clothing up to the light to see how much sunlight it lets in. And don’t forget one of our wonderful Key West hats and protective eyewear to complete the ensemble.

Regardless of these sun defense measures, sunscreen is also likely to be part of the protection equation. With this in mind, I checked out recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. A policy statement from 2011 mentioned that some studies were concerning regarding oxybenzone’s absorption through the skin and its potential effects on hormones in humans.

(It also mentioned other potential concerns about other ingredients.) While calling for more research, the authors still considered sunscreen to be a useful part of sun protection.

I also took a field trip to one of our local pharmacies (yes, the barefoot guy staring at sunscreens and not buying anything was me, for anyone who was watching). I checked ingredients and found quite the variety. Many had oxybenzone and/or octinoxate; many did not. I’d say that in my unscientific survey it was about 50 percent for the former and 25 percent for the latter.

So, we have options.

The best thing we can say about sunscreens is that they do work, and their effects, good and bad, will continue to be studied. Meanwhile, regardless of what the experts decide regarding the fate of oxybenzone and octinoxate — or any other currently used product — there is still likely to be a variety of good choices out there. And don’t forget the less controversial options of clothing, shade and timing to lower everyone’s risk.

n March 3, 1819, “An Act to Protect the Commerce of the United States, and Crimes of Piracy” was signed into law. The act authorized President Monroe to create a unit of the Navy that would become the West Indies Squadron. The unit formed on Dec. 20, 1822 and was compelled to protect the citizens of the United States, suppress piracy and combat the slave trade.

James Biddle was named the squadron’s first commander. Biddle employed heavy-drafted ships incapable of pursuing the shallow-draft vessels preferred by pirates better equipped to navigate the shallow nature of the local waters’ shoals and coral reefs.

Ultimately, Biddle’s methods proved inadequate. That would change when Commodore David Porter was assigned command of the West Indies Squadron on Feb. 1, 1823. Porter was told to establish a military depot at Thompson’s Island (more commonly known as Key West), unless he could identify a more suitable locale. The American flag was raised at 8 a.m. on April 6, 1823. Seventeen guns were fired in salute.

The Key West Gallery show will open with an Art Uncrating Party, where guests can preview the art works for sale first, on Friday, Feb. 1. 2019 is the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and fans and collectors are looking forward to reliving memories and capturing a piece of the Woodstock era at this show.

Many of Max’s iconic ‘60s works will be on exhibit and for sale at the show, including his famous “Love” and “Cosmic Runner” paintings.

Key West Gallery will host receptions from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily from Sunday, Feb. 3 through Thursday, Feb. 14, to accommodate fans and collectors.

Max’s “Heart” and “Vase of Flowers” paintings will be on exhibit and available for sale at the show for Valentine’s Day. Acclaimed for his colorful, expressionist paintings that he creates to this day, including celebrity commissions, Max has been the official artist for five Super Bowls, World Cup USA, six Grammy Awards, the NHL All-Star Game, the U.S. Winter Olympics, the Indy 500, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and NBC’s “The Voice.” His art sails the seas on the hull of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway ship and flew on the body of a Boeing 777 super jet for Continental Airlines. It also covered the 600-foot stage for the Woodstock ’99 Music Festival.

Peter Max captured the psychedelic ‘60s youth movement with his cosmic paintings, posters, serigraphs and popular licensed products — GE art clocks, bed sheets, Wrangler clothing, hightop sneakers, greeting cards and notebooks, bringing his art from museum and gallery walls directly to the people in the pop-art era.

The now 81-year-old Max is an icon of pop art and neo-expressionism in his 5th decade of creation.

Max is often called “America’s Painter Laureate,” having painted Statue of Liberty portraits since America’s Bicentennial. His American “Flag with Heart” paintings are displayed at presidential libraries and consulates. Max has been invited to paint at the White House during multiple presidencies. After the September 11 attacks, he created a series of art posters featuring the Statue of Liberty and the American flag to benefit Sept. 11 charities. He also painted a portrait of each of the firefighters who lost their lives at the Twin Towers and the Pentagon that day and gave the portraits to their families.

Max’s portraits have honored presidents, foreign dignitaries, rock stars and jazz musicians, movie stars and sports icons. He also is an active environmentalist and defender of animal and human rights, and helped bring yoga to the United States by co-founding the Integral Yoga Institute in 1966 with Swami Satchidananda. Integral Yoga Institute is now the largest yoga institute in the world.

ynthia Lewis, senior researcher for the Florida Institute of Oceanography’s Keys Marine Lab in Long Key, explains: There is really no difference.

“Cay” essentially morphed to “Key” especially here in the Florida Keys, where they are typically mangrove islands.

Often these cays or keys form as the mangrove roots trap sediment in shallow waters and it eventually forms an island. Or the mangroves grow on old coral outcroppings and expand out into the waters around them, enlarging the cay or key as they trap more sediments.

The word “cay” means a low bank or reef of coral, rock or sand and comes from theFrench “quai” (quay) through Spanish “cayo” (shoal or reef) and derived into “cay” late 17th century.

Cay, also spelled “key,” is a small, low island, usually sandy, situated on a coral reef platform. Such islands are commonly referred to as keys in Florida and parts of the Caribbean.

Sand cays are usually built on the edge of the coral platform, opposite the direction from which the prevailing winds blow.

Why couldn't we call them “an island” or “a peninsula?”

A peninsula is attached to land.

The Keys are still essentially islands but “Key” (or Cay) is more specific because these islands weren’t formed from volcanic activity.

The Keys Marine Laboratory (KML) was established in 1987 as a full-service marine field station and is operated by the Florida Institute of Oceanography, a consortium under the State University System. The facility offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and researchers from the state, national and international scientific communities studying the only tropical marine ecosystems in the continental United States.

n Jan. 26, the town gathered in a classic New Orleans tradition—with a Key West twist—to honor loved ones who have passed away in the last year.

The Bahama Village Music Program was a driving force behind this event, and it began in 2015 to honor the life of beloved drummer Richard Crooks.

Grand Marshal Mick Kilgos and the Funeral Band led the column of musicians down Duval Streets, horns echoing and drums pounding. The musicians were followed by marchers holding signs and memorabilia commemorating the lives of friends and family, concluding at the Green Parrot.

There, BVMP President Larry Baeder led a moving ceremony, reading the names of the dead, BVMP Joyful Voices Choir performed.

The community honorees of 2019 included celebrated Key Westers Yvan Agbo, David Wolkowsky and Jon “Tosh” McIntosh. The love echoed through town, and our one human family united present and passed.

hen was the last time you plucked a Key lime off your backyard tree for a fresh pie (or a G&T)? Can you remember?

Local tastemaker David Sloan, author of “The Key West Key Lime Pie Cookbook,” is on a mission to repopulate the land of the Lower Keys with real Key limes. Many recipes that call for Key limes either rely on their cousin, the Persian lime, or the “Key limes” imported from Mexico (more on that later). Sloan rocketed into the national spotlight earlier this month as a Key lime advocate on “CBS This Morning,” refuting the claim that the first recipe for the dessert was recorded at Borden Dairy in New York.

“Let New York have the pizza,” Sloan told correspondent Nancy Giles. “Give us Key lime pie!”

Sloan says the first recipe can be traced to the kitchen at the Curry Mansion Inn. But pies aside, the Key limes themselves would have traveled to the Keys before making their way to New York. Jeff Stotts, Keys-based botanist and fruit expert, takes the tale further back: “The lime that we call the ‘Key lime’ would normally have been called a ‘Mexican lime.’ Through the Spanish empire, we acquired this lime. But it’s actually native to China/Southeast Asia.”

So Key limes came to Key West via Asia by way of Spain, but where on earth did they go?

“I talked to so many people who lost their trees in Irma,” Sloan said, “The two biggest enemies of the trees I know of are saltwater intrusion during the storms, and the other is development. Someone builds, and they don’t want the tree in their yard.”

Stotts agrees: “Let’s not rule out the damage hurricanes do — they hurt the trees, they split the wood.” Yet Stotts lists other factors: stress on the trees from mistreatment, fungus, harmful lawn products, a citrus canker, and a citrus greening disease in effect now.

“But the main killer of the Key limes was gentrification,” he said. “That sounds like a Bob Dylan song.”

So it’s us, fellow citizens, who have stamped out our namesake fruit.

“There’s no reason that in 20 years, every pie can’t be made with local limes,” Sloan said. That’s where Steve Tarpin, the other half of this Johnny Appleseed initiative, comes into play. He’s a Key lime pie-maker based out of … wait for it … Red Hook, N.Y. Tarpin moved from his native Miami years ago and started making Key

lime pies in a small Brooklyn studio. He squeezes fresh limes for his pies, sourced from Mexico (which are shipped too young and green rather than at their peak, yellow, ripeness), which is the most reliable source available. Tarpin has been a co-sponsor of the Key Lime Festival with Sloan. He said, “David was asking me about prices and sources to make pies in Key West. I said he’d be better off sourcing local Key limes.”

Sloan told him that limes were nearly impossible to source locally — the trees were all but gone.

Tarpin said, “I’ve got the seeds.”

Sloan said, “I’m passionate about the history of Key lime pie, and Steve’s a real purist. He probably makes one of the best Key lime pies in the world.” Tarpin demurs, “Any self-respecting native South Floridian should know how to make a decent Key lime pie.”

The two have teamed up for the “One Seed at a Time” initiative. Tarpin is shipping his seeds to anyone in the Keys who wants a free packet (there’s a link to growing instructions on his site). Sloan is the man on the ground, enlisting help from folks like chef and rum distiller Paul Menta, who has agreed to be at the front line of the lime revolution, starting a grove in his yard. “We want to keep advancing the program, and we really want community involvement,” said Sloan, who plans to approach the City Commission to consider unused city space for Key lime groves.

“We have a goal of having every Key lime pie made in the Keys produced with local, fresh picked Key limes by 2040.” Free seeds and growing instructions are now available to any Monroe County resident at Smokin’ Tuna Saloon’s gift shop or The Key West Firehouse Museum, or by visiting www.keylime.com.

A BRIEF HISTORY LESSON IN KEY LIMES WITH JEFF STOTTS, BOTANIST “Famously, British soldiers used limes so they didn’t get scurvy, and that’s what introduced lime to the Anglican world. But the Spanish already knew about it, which is why they didn’t suffer from scurvy,” said Stotts. “Mexico became the agricultural center of the Spanish empire.

At the time, Bahamian and Cuban émigrés were colonizing Key West. So, they knew that they had a lime that could grow in coral and rock on an island.” Some of the old Bahamian and Cuban practices have modern value: “The trees were managed by dumping water on your citrus or promoting good soil by composting. That type of horticultural practice came to Key West.” The Bahamian immigrants used Key lime juice as a preservative and means of killing germs. “When you look on labels today and see ascorbic acid,” said Stotts, “you can trace that back to lime juice.”

Citrus are temperate fruits, rather than tropical fruits, but Key limes are a tropical variety, native to Southeast Asia, arriving in the Keys by way of Mexico.

Key lime trees don’t need a lot of care, but “don’t like a lot of neglect,” according to Stotts.

•

Citrus grows well in sand, not mulch. Their root system needs to breathe. Home Depot sells garden sand (beach sand has too much salt).

•

Plant trees in places with good drainage and high elevation so there isn’t salt water inundation.

Look out for imposters!

Said Tarpin, “Look out for truth in packaging. If it says “Key West lime juice,” it’s just (Persian) lime juice that’s bottled in Key West.”

The more popular citrus in South Florida for many years wasn’t the Key lime, it was the sour orange. They were more prevalent, but then because of the pies, Key limes became more important.

FIRST FAMILY FOR FOUR DECADES MCDONALDS TOGETHER AGAIN FOR RED BARN SHOW

I

n the early days of the Red Barn, their kids used to sleep on blankets backstage while Mom and Dad rehearsed their next play. For the kids, it was just the way things were, this is what their family did: mom and dad under the lights, the kids watching from the wings with their binkies and bottles.

And nearly 40 years later, they’re still doing it. For Mimi and Gary McDonald and siblings Amber McDonald Good and Jack McDonald, theater is literally in their blood. They really haven’t known anything else.

And this year, audiences are being treated to a rare evening of McDonald theater, as all four members of Key West’s first family of theater have come together to produce and direct “Short Attention Span Theatre: Enjoy the Ride,” now playing at the Red Barn on Duval Street through Saturday, Feb. 9.

“This is actually the third time we’ve done it – all of us together,” said Mimi McDonald; she and husband Gary were founding members of the Red Barn 39 years ago. “People find it unusual and unique, I guess, but it’s not to us. It’s a natural course for our family to take when you think about it. We’ve been a theatrical family since the beginning.”

Mimi and Gary met at Virginia Commonwealth University just as the ’70s were kicking in. He studied commercial art and design, with a love for building all sorts of things. She studied acting. When they graduated and married in 1974, they honeymooned in Key West, but then did some traveling before hooking up with several acting friends – including Doug and Marjorie Paul-Shook – and moving to the end of the road permanently.

They were immediately successful in the theatrical community here, first with the Green Street Theatre – where they worked with the likes of Tennessee Williams, Shel Silverstein, and Roy Scheider – and then at the Red Barn, which they helped found with several other theater friends. Nothing’s changed since.

“We’re all so used to one another in the theater,” McDonald said. “It’s a blessing, really, because we all speak the same language.”

Amber and Jack grew up in the theater, McDonald said. “They come by all of this honestly. Amber studied acting at Boston University, then had a decent career in Hollywood before moving back here to start a family. Jack was stage managing for us at 11 years old, and helping his dad build and paint sets.

He’s very creative visually, especially with costumes.”

“Short Attention Span Theatre” is a perfect showcase for the family talents.

All four McDonalds are directing, with a little help from friends Richard Grusin and Dave Bootle. Amber has even shown up to her rehearsals with her young kids in tow – the next generation of McDonalds to breathe in the theatrical air.

“This year may be the last time we’ll ever do something like this,” McDonald said, a note of wistfulness in her voice.

But then with a laugh, she added, “But you never know in theater, do you?”

he Women’s March Florida Keys chapter is hosting a “Dismantling Racism” workshop, intended to deepen participants’ understanding of personal, cultural and institutional racism.

Michelle C. Johnson, anti-racism trainer, yogi and activist, will lead a workshop focused on understanding systems of power, privilege and oppression. To make this workshop accessible, WMFK has created a threetiered payment scale: $100, $125 or $150. In addition, a limited number of partial and full scholarships are available.

illy Kearins isn’t new to serendipity.

His workshop space-turned music venue-turned lifestyle brand Coast has been a product of hard work, and also, happenstance. The motto, which Kearins calls “purposely ambiguous” is “Coast. Live by it.”

Kearins moved back to Key West from Copenhagen six years ago and was looking for a work space. Self-trained as a builder (of boats and boards among other things), Upon return, he visited his old Shrimp Road studio. “And literally that day I visited, they were knocking it down.”

Instead, like any good islander, he went to have a bite and a beer. “I basically hopped into my buddy’s truck, and we were headed to Hogfish,” he said. They saw the lot on Front Street with a “for rent” sign. “It was bigger than what I was looking for ... but it seemed like it had a lot of potential.” Kearins (and a rotating cast of friends, craftsmen, and fellow artists) built it out, creating open-air studios, common space, and ultimately, a stage.

“During this time I developed the Coast brand,” he said, “But it wasn’t really a brand back then, it was a community of craftsmen by the sea.” Kearins describes those early years with nostalgia, and it’s easy to look at the seaside gravel lot and

imagine it animated with people creating things. He describes their Friday afternoon beers, accompnaied by the sounds of a local band (they offered the lot as a free practice space).

“During the first couple of years, there were a lot of building projects: local companies hired us to do artistic carpentry, anything from painting a mural to building a boat.” During that time, a Brooklyn artist named Duke Riley worked at Coast, building bird coops and training homing pigeons. He ultimately trained them to fly from Havana, Cuba to Key West, “carrying illicit cigars and cameras to record the journey” (according to a New York Times story). Kearins describes it as a time of “renegade art.”

Art begat music. “There wasn’t this type of live music venue in Key West,” he said. Through parties and gatherings with local musicians, the idea of inviting bands to Coast bloomed. Soon, Coast was hosting — and selling out — acts like Mason Jennings and G Love and the Special Sauce. “Everybody wondered how we did it,” Kearins laughed, “And it’s like, ‘You just have to ask.’”

This is the peak magic moment in the Coast story, if you could nail one down.

“We were going on full cylinders, doing big projects, selling out shows, the studio was full, and we were riding that wave for several years. … But I knew it wasn’t a sustainable model.”

He was right. The shows were paying for themselves but not making money, and Stock Island continued to be just a little too far to drive for Key Westers.

Kearins said he was happy to see new venues in town, and Coast drifted out of the music business with the ease it drifted in.

Then the story returns to where it started: Kearins was contemplating leaving the Stock Island lot, riding his bike down Whitehead Street, and he saw another “For Rent” sign. Within a week, he was in the new space, building it out, stocking merchandise. “I took the leap,” he said, “and I figured, now it’s time. I could have waited, but that’s not really my style.”

They are now selling apparel and handmade skateboards at the Coast Outpost at 803 Whitehead St. They are also hosting Yonder Mountain String Band in Feb. [see box]. Coast continues to evolve: Kearins hints at a “strategic partnership” for new Keys-based ventures, and he took an East Coast road trip over the summer to scout new outposts with local flavor.

Kearins has his sights set on expansion and innovation, starting studios and retail spaces in “other funky end-of-the-road places.” But expansion doesn’t mean popping up in every mall in America. “I don’t want it to be a false brand, where it’s a sticker or a label. And I always want to have an anchor in Key West. I picture Key West as the end of the road, and the only way you can leave here is by going up.”

It wasn’t really a brand back then, it was a community of craftsmen by the sea.

T

he past is right beside artist Roberta Marks, converging with her present, and creating art that is both nostalgic and thought-provoking.

Opening at the Studios of Key West on Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Sanger Gallery, Marks’ new show “Convergence” is a beautiful culmination of her history, but also an edgy commentary of modern times. Thirty new pieces will be on display, ranging from minimalist sculpture to detailed and intricate installations able to convey that the past is still present.

Marks, a Florida native and Key West resident since 1981, has exhibited her art in galleries, universities and museums throughout the United States and Europe.

She has also influenced the art world as a dedicated teacher, and as a local favorite at The Studios of Key West. She said her prolific career has taken her around the globe and her dedication to Buddhism, the process of letting go and living in the moment, guides her images.

“I wanted to be different, not boring,” said Marks. “People either relate or don’t to my work; that’s a reality. However, those who do, really do.” Remembering childhood discrimination against her Jewish heritage, Marks has been profoundly affected by President Trump’s racial division of the country as well as the treatment of immigrant children at the U.S.Mexico border. Her work does not

shy away from what is on the news today, and many of her installations make statements about the tragedies. Mixing found objects, paint, canvas and paper, Marks builds artwork that engages a sense of familiarity but also pulls at heartstrings.

Other works are thoughtful stories created through small installations of the old suitcases, clocks, antique books and pictures she combines in a precise and meticulous manner. Marks invites the viewer to take a “Sentimental Journey,” by artfully arranging familiar cultural artifacts and leaving them open to audience interpretation.

Lastly, Marks presents the visual dichotomy of her installations with wall sculptures that are minimal and architectural. Made from recyclable materials such as cardboard and wood, the pieces are about design and new endeavors for Marks, even some bold colors, a clear departure from her usual soft, muted palate.

A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2 AT THE WATERFRONT THEATER

H

enrik Ibsen’s “A Doll House,” circa 1879, caught audiences off guard when it ended with the lead slamming a door behind her. Playwright Lucas Hnath in 2017 picks up where Ibsen and the first play left off by reopening the door 15 years later with “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” now playing at The Waterfront Theater. Like movie sequels, when a plot and characters are rich enough, everyone wants a little more, and Hnath gives audiences a whole new story that is a pure slice of Broadway here at home.

Character Nora Helmer was last seen leaving her husband, children and outspoken nanny for something greater, sending feminist shockwaves throughout the theater.

For Hnath, the obvious question became “What happened next?”. Thus the play begins with a knock at the door, and Nora has returned. Played by Maribeth Graham, Nora is fiery, self-righteous and ready for closure from Torvald. Graham delivers Nora with an astute force, conveying both her pride and prejudice. When loyal, sensible nanny Anne Marie, played by Joy Hawkins, answers the door, the two verbally spar like seasoned family. Hawkins, always a bright spot on-stage, brings lightness to play with biting one-liners and sharp looks worthy of their laughter.

angry and unforgiving, but also human and hurt by Nora’s abandonment. The two easily ignite the marital fires that have burned long before, and will after, the time in which both plays are set.

The real test is her reunion with daughter Emmy, played by a charming Jessica Kruel. Emmy is stony and curious about her mother as Nora tries to explain, “The world I am making for you hasn’t happened yet.”

Emmy is the unfortunate emblem of Nora’s self-serving sacrifices, and she’s a painful reminder that freedom and love do not often go hand in hand.

The dialogue is full of witty back-andforth, with Hnath doing a lawyerly job of presenting all sides to the story. It’s a comedy, but also full of age-old wants and gripes about marriage, men, women and children.

Director Murphy Davis pulls from his actors their best nuances and shows how relationships can sometimes be too complicated to take a side and declare a winner, even after all is said and done.

A noted aspect to the play is the tossing out of Victorian speech in favor of the outright modern vernacular. It’s as if the characters have updated not only themselves, but also their set scripts, both literally and metaphorically.

The play plays both sides when it comes to Nora’s outcome. She has proudly become a liberated, self-sufficient woman, fulfilling her heart’s desires, but when facing husband, Torvald, and her forgotten daughter again, she must pay for her feminist sins.

MOONDOG CAFÉ AND BAKERY RISES TO MEET DEMAND

T

he folks behind The Café and Banana Café have debuted a funky new spot on Whitehead: Moondog Café and Bakery. With gorgeous baked goods in the front display case (fresh fruit tarts and homemade croissants) and savory smells coming from the kitchen, it’s easy to be led in by the nose.

Moondog is already busy and bustling with tourists and locals alike, with colorful murals by Marky Pierson and the Wonderdog team as well as Marlene Koenig, creating an atmosphere that feels Caribbean by way of California.

The food is eclectic, with dishes to satisfy vegetarians and carnivores alike, from a hearty and healthy avocado & veggie salad, with roasted beets, kale, green goddess dressing and pumpkin seeds, to a mouth-watering “moon burger” menu — we recommend the Johnny Cash, with grilled onions and peppers, sharp cheddar, and sriracha mayo. Their brunch is a popular meal, with a beautiful bright tomato-y baked shakshuka and tasty breakfast tacos, and dinner is more elevated, with a nice fresh char-grilled octopus salad and ahi tuna poke. Don’t miss classics from the Café that have popped up on the Moondog menu: the roasted honey-garlic bruschetta and fresh spinach & artichoke dip are two standouts that are reliably delicious, veggie-forward and satisfying.

The staff has also risen to accommodate the already considerable crowd, with familiar smiling faces and bartenders serving up an impressive range of craft beers and cocktails. Moondog is still the new kid on the block, working out little kinks in food and service, but no doubt there’s a new favorite dining spot on the horizon.

hey say “one good turn deserves another,” and on Jan. 26 good deeds were celebrated with great fanfare at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel. The Greater Miami & Keys Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted the 2019 Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year Award and Gala, honoring Tom Callahan as the 2019 recipient of the titular award, for his lifetime of service, support and commitment to our community. There were drinks and dancing, laughter and lightness, as well as a recommitment to the service of the citizens of Key West. The event was founded by the Spottswood family in honor of matriarch Florence, who established the first Red Cross chapter in the Florida Keys in 1917.

When I was a freshman I didn’t think choir was going to be as important to me and as fun as it is.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you? I’m involved in the choir in KWHS, and that’s important because I love music and choir. The choir at KWHS is a big dysfunctional family.

What are your plans after high school? I hope to go to college for music.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I like to spend time with my friends and family.

Will you makethe Keys your permanent home? I will not make the Keys my permanent home because it is too expensive, although I will visit my hometown as much as possible.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I would like to have a college degree for music; I want to be a pirate; I want to be successful.
