Barbara Withers said, “I walk because of the worldwide rise of authoritarianism, misogyny, white nationalism, and discrimination of all kinds. Women can change the world.” 2017: marched in Key West; 2018: marched in Key West; and 2019: marched in D.C.

“Women’s rights are still an important and relevant issue three years later,” said Kris Schuhmacher. “We need to make sure that our government leaders are accountable and that everybody in our country is included, everybody like women, the LGBTQ+ community, Native Americans, African Americans, and more.” 2017: marched in Key West; and 2019: marched in D.C. “This year in Key West I spoke and marched to bring the discussion of dismantling racism to the conversation. If we really want to live ‘One Human Family’ city motto then we have to address that,” said Natalia Duke, Florida Keys chapter captain of the Women’s March. “I also marched to bring awareness to the other actions we do locally the other 364 days of the year.” 2017: marched in D.C.; 2018: marched in Miami; and 2019: marched in Key West.

“I didn’t know the march was happening that day,” said Noelle Salyers. “I wish I could have been there to support women, especially trans women and the indigenous women and girls that are missing.

The rate of violence against them is scary.”

Tricia Eables said, “I march for my niece Britney and my two goddaughters Sydney and Savannah because I think that we have not come far enough in the world for women’s rights. ity Manager Jim Scholl, during a recent City Commission meeting, honored Engineering Director Jim Bouquet for his unflagging service to the city. Bouquet is retiring at the beginning of February.

Steve McAlearney, who will be taking the reins, summed up Bouquet’s time with the city:

“Jim’s motto for the engineering department,” said McAlearney, “is ‘we just build ‘em.’ And boy did we ever!”

Among the projects completed under Bouquet’s leadership are City Hall, the transit facility, the Caroline Street Corridor, the sexton’s office, several new seawalls, the new bathrooms at Smathers Beach and the Key West Amphitheater.

“And he’s only been here five years!” said McAlearney.

“The engineering department is better than it’s ever been under Jim’s leadership,” said Scholl. “I can’t say enough about what he’s done for this city.”

Bouquet thanked the commission, City staff and his colleagues. “You’ve all made me feel like family,” he said.

T

he Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce installation and awards dinner took place Jan. 19 at the Key West Beachside Marriott.

It’s the time of year when chamber members can let loose and look back on the great strides members have made developing the Key West business community. With Hurricane Irma in the rear-view mirror, it was a positive year of growth, seeing business numbers back on the rise. Outgoing President Suzanne Moore began by the evening by thanking the many chamber members for making 2018 full of achievements.

Moore thanked the chairs of various committees who each spearheaded initiatives. She began with Lynn Tejeda with the Marketing and PR Committee, for advancing the chamber’s social media; Billy Spottswood with the IT Committee for staying aware of all new technology and with the Education Committee for the new Financial Fitness Program and a teacher recognition program; and Michael Morawski with the Affordable Housing Committee, committed to workforce housing. She thanked Greg Sullivan and Bill Lay with the golf tournament committee for making the event a huge financial success; and other chairs, Melissa Kendrick with the Tourism Committee, Michael Morawski with the Economic Affairs Committee and

Moore gave President’s Awards to chamber members Joyce Benavides and Angie Waltersons. They excelled at being “involved in other non-profit organizations and community events throughout the island and participated with a constant positive can-do attitude and high energetic spirit,” said Moore.

Then Moore passed the gavel to incoming 2019 president Michael Morawski, CEO of the Ernest Hemingway House and Home.

“Michael practices the chamber’s mission,” she said, “in serving our members and striving to maintain a viable economy for the business and working people of Key West.”

Morawski, humbled, said, “That’s all you will hear about me tonight. This night isn’t about me.

It’s about those who selflessly join others and offer their unique talents and skill set for the benefit of others.” Morawski also said he looks forward to working with the dynamic board.

3 The evening’s three top awards were presented: the William “Billy” Appelrouth Award went to Morawski, the Athena Award to Brenda Donnelly and the Hall of Fame Award to Michael Browning.

And the chamber can now look ahead with its new board of directors and officers, who include John Bartelmo, Joyce Benavides, David Clay, Jed Dodds, Cara Higgins, Sam Holland, Darren Horan, Melissa Kendrick, Bill Lay, Suzanne Moore, Monica Munoz, Britt Myers, Mark Rossi, Diane Schmidt, Karen Sharp, Catherine Smiley, Lynne Tejeda and Daniel Toppino. 2019 officers will be First Vice President Billy Spottswood, 2nd Vice President John Toppino, Treasurer Joe Caso and Secretary Greg Sullivan.

The chamber also gave thanks to Virginia Panico and the chamber’s staff Kerry Baker, Karrie Bond, Gladys Clarks, Dorothy Schmida and Suzanne Pearce.

They not only coordinate the gala every year but make sure the chamber’s operations run smoothly on a year round basis.

GUIDES FISH FOR A SOLUTION

ublic awareness campaigns, signs at boat ramps promoting local guides, stickers, code enforcement, and changing state law — those are some of the points Doug Kilpatrick, president of the Lower Keys Guides Association, recommended to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners on Jan. 23.

Kilpatrick told the board there are increasing threats to the recreational fishing industry.

“We know that the flats fishing guide industry brings in $460 million a year. We also know that there’s a thirty to forty percent increase in outof-town guides that come to the Keys and work for three to four months every year,” he said.

Previous conversations between guides and county staff have revealed that it's unlawful to charge out-ofcounty guides a different rate than local guides for an occupational license.

So guides are preparing to advance legislation at the state level, similar to other states that charge thousands of dollars for non-residential guides.

The Keys guides have also set their sights on more obtainable goals; like stickers issued with occupational licenses for boats and trailers in the hopes that vehicles without those might draw the attention of code enforcement.

But Kilpatrick and Capt. Will Benson, another guide, also brought up illegal “fishing lodges” where clients rent a room in a private home, and leave the dock with an unlicensed guide.

“That is completely wrong,” said Commissioner Danny Kolhage.

Monroe County has a similar case that will be heard by a special magistrate on Feb. 28. The county received a complaint last week about a 40-foot sportfisherman docked at a home on Little Torch.

“The home we are citing talks about the bathroom downstairs in the house that is available to those renting the boat in an advertisement,” said Francie Boellard, a county vacation rental inspector. “An anonymous resident stated everyone on the street and surrounding area (is) upset with the noise, traffic and different people visiting weekly.”

Mayor David Rice told the guides they must file code complaints when they learn of such activities.

“If you know of violations, and are not willing to make complaints, then nothing is going to happen,” Rice said, adding he would support state legislation to charge out-of-state guides a higher occupational license fee.

Benson also told the board about a “mothership” anchored in the Marquesas. Benson said clients are ferried out to the boat where they sleep at night, and then are guided by captains without county or state licenses.

“We want to lay a foundation and work with you on finding solutions,” Benson said.

“We will even pay for the signage at boat ramps ourselves,” said Kilpatrick.

Commissioner Heather Carruthers said this industry expansion is the beginning of a major problem. “If we start using boats as hotel rooms … well, we lack the regulatory mechanisms,” she said. “And it’s about pump-outs and protecting water quality.”

MAYOR’S OPTIMISM HIGHLIGHTS ‘STATE OF THE CITY’

A

t the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon meeting at the Doubletree on Jan. 23, Mayor Teri Johnston apprised members of the “state of the city.” The mayor said she approaches 2019 with “abounding optimism” and reported “an excitement of change, growth, vision, and expectations” from the city commission.

Discussing the city’s financial stability, recovery from Irma (so far $3.5 million has been reimbursed), quality of life (soon a $7 million renovation of FireStation #3 will happen on Kennedy), and health and safety concerns, Johnston gave a positive and thorough report.

She recommitted to focusing on increasing water quality and decreasing downtown congestion (via the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan), and she broached the citizenry’s affordable housing concerns.

“Housing is an issue for most communities in the United States,” Johnston said, “but it is amplified in Key West many times over.”

She discussed a $29 million project to create workforce housing on College Road in Stock Island and said “because we can’t do it all doesn’t mean we cannot do some.”

Johnston ended with her “deep commitment” to the local economy, quality of life and “retaining our inclusive, quirky, compassionate community values.”

The Mayor answered Chamber questions about the Duval Street Promenade Pilot program that will start in February over six weekends on the 500, 600 and 700 blocks. With those blocks closed to traffic, stores and restaurants will be allowed to use the sidewalks for business. “The feeling is to bring people back to Duval Street in a relaxed setting,” said Johnston.

Also starting in February, crosswalk safety will implemented on North Roosevelt and the city will be getting started on phase 1B of Truman Waterfront, which includes a multi use full-size sports field.

HERE ARE “BY THE NUMBERS” HIGHLIGHTS FROM JOHNSTON’S ADDRESS. Key West City total 2018-19 budget is $185 million.

CODE COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT: In 2018, the department investigated just under 1,800 complaints and collected delinquent business tax receipts that brought the city more than $32,000.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT: Processed 5,671 permit applications in 2018.

CITY CLERKS DEPARTMENT: Conducted 29 Commission meetings, responded to 1,380 public records requests.

HUMAN RESOURCES: Responsible for developing and implementing policy, designing employee benefits programs for 494 active employees and 85 retirees. In 2018, minimum salary for city employees rose to $15 per hour.

PLANNING: 2,565 applications for planning, zoning, HARC and tree Commission policies.

HARC: 1,836 certificate of appropriateness applications with only 2 being denied and held 12 public meetings and 1 workshop in 2018.

TREE COMMISSION: Processed 554 applications in 2018, authored 4 new ordinances, planted 15 trees in Bayview Park and accepted 55 donated trees.

TRANSPORTATION: Operates an 18hour day, 363 days a year. Last year 36 staff members operated more than 675,000 miles providing service for 620,000 riders.

DUVAL LOOP service carried more than 1,000 riders per day.

ROADS/SIDEWALKS: Repaved more than 1.5 miles of roads and re-poured 1.23 miles of sidewalks in Key West.

UTILITIES: Collected 4 million gallons of waste water per day while cleaning and maintaining sewers and pump stations. City’s recycling rate in 2018 was 12 percent. City collected more than 52,000 tons of solid waste, 6,000 tons of recycling and 4,000 tons of yard waste.

Over the past year, more than 200 pounds of cigarette butts were collected and recycled.

‘VOUCHERIZATION’ OF PUBLIC EDUCATION

I

was grateful to be able to participate in this year’s Monroe County Legislative Delegation meeting, held at Marathon City Hall on Jan. 15. Our state representative, Holly Raschein, and our state senator, Anitere Flores, had a chance to listen and respond to a variety of legislative concerns from local elected officials, non-profits and other stakeholders, from up and down the Keys. They informed us that they both held significant leadership roles and looked forward to working together to address the needs of our community.

When I was given a chance to speak, my concerns revolved around the suggestion by our state’s newly appointed commissioner of education, Richard Corcoran, that “if Florida were to voucherize the entire school system, it would transform education for the better.” I am concerned how such transformation will impact our Keys schools.

A few years ago, former Governor Jeb Bush (who has remained active in directing education reform policy in Florida) was asked what universal vouchers would look like in rural districts like Monroe. At that time, he imagined a “post brick and mortar” era of public education, where private schools from the mainland would create online courses that our children could access via laptops.

This is not how I want my children educated.

I asked Senator Flores, who sits on a powerful Senate education committee, how she imagines the voucherization of public education will impact our local schools and how can we ensure public education is adequately supported in our communities. Senator Flores replied that she was unaware any such bills “had been filed” and reassured us that any such bill would have to be vetted and go through the entire legislative process.

In other words, we should “hope for the best…”

Imagine my surprise when I got home and learned that, at virtually the same time our local delegation was meeting, State Senate President Bill Galvano was telling a Sarasota business audience about Florida’s plans to expand the use

of “Education Savings Accounts” or ESAs (a form of private school voucher) for all students!

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Galvano told his audience that the more conservative Florida Supreme Court currently being fashioned by Gov. Ron DeSantis would pave the way for education reforms that had been struck down in the past, allowing the revisiting of some of the ideas that Gov. Bush brought to the table “back in the day.” One of those ideas was “Education Savings Accounts” which allow students to use public tax dollars to pay for private religious school tuition and a range of other educational services, such as tutoring or homeschool supplies. Such a system would rely on a vibrant marketplace of education options for families to choose from, and could move Florida into the “post brick and mortar” era of public education imagined by Governor Bush. An ESA that’s available to all Florida students essentially would act as a universal voucher, fulfilling Commissioner Corcoran’s plan to “voucherize” our entire school system.

It is disappointing that Senator Flores was unwilling to discuss the possible ramifications of universal vouchers on our local schools and communities. It is difficult to imagine that Senator Flores, who sits on education committees, serves as deputy majority leader and works for an education foundation, was unaware of her Senate president’s plan to advance “bold” education initiatives this session, such as universal vouchers. Could she really not have known? To date, the impact of such plans on rural districts has been largely ignored, beyond the offering of online homeschooling. How can we be assured that expanding to universal vouchers won’t further defund our cash strapped schools? Senator Flores missed an opportunity to explore such topics with her constituents.

Our school kids deserve better.

On a tour of the Panhandle last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state woul expedite hurricane recovery funds for local municipalities.

week ago, Gov. Ron DeSantis and DEM Director Jared Moskowitz were touring the Panhandle and announced that expedited funds for local governements — likely for Category A and B expenses associated with debris removal and life and safety protection measures — would be immediately available to those affected by Hurricane Michael in the Panhandle.

This is a reversal of thenGov. Rick Scott’s position. Under Scott’s direction, the funds had to pass the federal audit, and then undergo another “100 percent” audit at the state level.

Consequently, municipalities like Marathon and Islamorada have received next to nothing in FEMA reimbursements, while Monroe County and Key West are faring a little better.

The state Department of Emergency Management did not respond to questions posed by the Weekly, so it’s unknown whether Gov. DeSantis will make this policy shift retroactive to cover Keys local government expenditures to clean up after Irma.

At the beginning of the month, neither Marathon nor Islamorada had received any reimbursement for the respective $23 million and $8 million they have spent.

Representatives from both cities, plus Monroe County, said they

haven’t received any messages from the state about a policy shift as it relates to Irma.

Key West City Manager Jim Scholl said it’s hard to say, yet, if the leadership change in Tallahassee has affected reimbursements.

“Our Category A & B expenses are already mostly reimbursed,” Scholl said. “Even though the process at the state level has been slow and painful, we’ve been fortunate to already have an established relationship.”

Scholl credits the city-hired auditors who prepare the reimbursement requests for its healthy position — it has received about half of the $9.5 million requested, although there may be more expenses ahead.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the federal government shutdown is likely to delay Hurricane Irma reimbursement requests still being audited at the federal level.

Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey said he’s encouraged by DeSantis’ recent announcement regarding expedited hurricane funds for local municipalities cleaning up after a natural disaster, adding that it was a topic of conversation during Lindsey’s two days in Tallahassee to help set the new leadership’s agenda as part of the Transition Advisory Committee on Government Operations.

he Florida Keys Seafood Festival took over Bayview Park the weekend of Jan. 19-20. With a smorgasbord of seafood: conch fritters, stone crab claws, snapper and lobster, the air was filled with delicious smells and the sound of local bands. Thousands visited the grounds, sampling the offerings and browsing local art and crafts.

The festival began in 2005, in part because of the devastating effect of Hurricane Wilma. The storm swept away the traps of many Keys fishermen, leaving them — literally — nothing to do. Local fisherman George Niles was the president of the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association at the time.

He and other members decided to use the down time to organize a festival to celebrate the industry, the lifestyle and, most importantly, the food.

Executive Director of the FKCFA Bill Kelly welcomed “friends, neighbors and visitors from around the globe” to the 14th annual Seafood Festival, presented by the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association. He said, “Bring your appetites and be prepared to chow down on the freshest seafood the Florida Keys have to offer, including spiny lobster, stone crab, snapper, grouper, chowders and desserts all caught, cleaned, cooked and served by our commercial fishing men and women and their families.”

Kelly said, “As one island community, we have gathered our resources to clear our shorelines and

open water areas and jump-start the commercial fishing industry which comprises the second largest economic engine and employer in the Florida Keys … (and to) contribute to our scholarship program for graduating seniors throughout the islands and aid in addressing fisheries management issues critical to the sustainability of the animals we harvest for consumers worldwide.”

The festival has another important function. It generates funds for the group to protect the industry and influence fisheries management regulations. The FKCFA turns 29 in 2019. The seafood served at the festival is sustainably harvested with the highest regard for the Keys’ sensitive marine environment and the ecology that supports local livelihoods.

I

t’s a family trait, Bob Bowersox claims, wanting to do it all and dabble in everything. A local playwright and actor, Bowersox studied pre-med but ultimately graduated with a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Delaware and a master’s in screenwriting from UCLA. He once had a newspaper nightlife column but also hit the road as a musician and made a couple of albums before he became a recording engineer for a disco radio show.

His resume reads like a chameleon, ever adapting and accepting new opportunities. So naturally, when he saw an ad in a Philadelphia newspaper that said “Do you want to be on TV?” Bowersox thought, “Who doesn’t?” He interviewed at a fledgling QVC TV station and became host of “In the Kitchen with Bob,” as a chef selling products (there’s a cookbook still available on Amazon). He went on to spend 23 years developing the most profitable consumer trend, home shopping, 19 of those as the number one show on QVC, and sold more than $200 million in product a year (but not on commission, bummer).

When he retired from television, Bowersox moved full-time to Key West and was able to use his experience and talents developing local theater. Whether acting, directing, producing with his non-profit XP Theater, Bowersox adapts and doesn’t stop changing his colors to fit his environment. Among many other awards, recently, he won Decimos Magazine’s award for short story and has sold a couple of scripts to Hollywood. As Bowersox says, “Never say ‘no’ because you just don’t know where it will take you.”

What’s the most illegal thing you’ve done? In one of my very poor periods, I once bought a pound of pot with the idea I would sell it, but my band ended up smoking most of it … especially the bassist.

What question would you most like to know the answer to? Are human beings truly native to this planet? I’ve come to really think not.

What job would you be terrible at? Accounting.

What’s your nerdiest passion? I seriously cannot watch a movie without a bag of popcorn in my lap. It’s sacrilege if I do.

If invisible in Key West, what would you do? Follow the Ghost Tour around and make things happen that scare the bejesus out of them.

Who is your alter ego? Probably my brother … he’s a very spiritual guy … a shaman.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Chocolate chip cookies.

Full Name? Nickname? Robert Tracey Bowersox. Usually called Bob, but in the past have been called “Sox”.

Do you have a life credo or motto? When a door opens, walk through it. Don’t be afraid or think you can’t do it. You can.

How did you get involved with theater?

My first role was as Marc Antony in “Julius Caesar” in high school, and I’ve acted ever since. Really got into it at University of Delaware in their Professional Theatre Training Program. I did a lot of film for a while, but I’m very glad to have come back to theater here in Key West.

How many plays have you written? How did you start writing? I’ve written nine or 10 plays over the years, five of which have been produced. I’ve also written eight screenplays, several of which have won awards, and two of which have been optioned.

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? That it could go back about 20 years, and choose a different path than the one they took that has led to the crass, cheap commercialism that now dominates the city. We could have gone so much more upscale. I just don’t know if it will be possible to shift direction now.

What’s the best attribute of Key West theater? It’s very inclusive, I think. If you really want to do it, there are a lot of opportunities to do so. But you have to go after it. … It won’t come to you. And I think that Key West is very, very open to letting you do your own thing, as long as you know what you’re doing and do it well.

What quirks do you have? My biggest pet peeve is technology that doesn’t work as advertised. It drives me crazy.

What’s something surprising people don’t know about you? I was in a special pre-med program between the University of Delaware and Jefferson Medical College, on a track toward neurosurgery. Worked in a level one trauma center in the ER and OR for three years. But the lure of performing (music and stage) was too strong … and I just couldn’t get organic chemistry … it was all Greek to me.

Lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Frank Darabont maybe or Robert Towne (both film directors/screenwriters).

My friends and family would describe me as … driven, focused, capable. And kind of a nuge.

illiam Curry was born on Green Turtle Kay in 1821.

He relocated to Key West in 1837 and would, for several years, be assigned to the Florida Squadron under the command of Lt. McLaughlin during the second escalation of the Seminole War. Curry would have been stationed at Indian Key. Curry would return to Key West, build his empire, and become not just Florida’s first self-made millionaire, but the richest man in Florida.

According to his gravestone at the Key West Cemetery, William Curry passed away on Jan. 24, 1896. According to his obituary, which appeared in the Daily Key West Herald on Jan. 25, he died the day before, on Thursday, Jan. 23.

A couple of years later, on Jan. 25, 1898, President McKinley sent the second class battleship U.S.S. Maine to Cuba as a show of force, promoting the protection of American interests on the island. The warship pulled up to Havana Harbor in broad daylight on Jan. 25, 1898 with nearly 400 crewmen on board. On Feb. 15 the Maine exploded, taking the lives of nearly 300 sailors, some of whom are buried on Key West.

t was Mark Twain who wrote, “Truth is stranger than fiction.” Historian Jerry Wilkinson and I certainly became aware of how improbable – and extraordinary – the truth could be as we researched our new book, “Hidden History of the Florida Keys.” Digging into archives and old newspaper accounts, we came across the surprising adventures of Confederate Conchs and swashbuckling rum runners, not to mention a notorious 19th century duel.

One breezy Key West evening in 1829, a naval captain named Charles Hawkins came home from dinner to discover his wife wrapped in the arms of his own lawyer, William Allison McRae. Enraged, Captain Hawkins fired his pistol at McRae, but the young man escaped through a window.

Days later, the two met for a duel – with “seconds,” or observers – on the beach.

Hawkins, by far the better shot, wounded McRae seriously, but not fatally. Many duels in that era were not fought to the death: by wounding his opponent, the captain had satisfactorily avenged his honor.The controversy should have ended there.

Yet when Captain Hawkins returned to sea, McRae and Mrs. Hawkins once again became romantically entangled. Upon his return to Key West, the captain heard of their renewed affair; what’s more, McRae, Hawkins’ former lawyer, was using private information to help enemies of the captain bring lawsuits against him! This betrayal of attorney-client privilege was the proverbial last straw. The captain hid in a house on Whitehead Street and, spotting his target, shot him dead.

2 Island authorities sent Hawkins away to jail in St Augustine. Later, he was brought back to await trial for murder. There was only one difficulty: none of the potential Keys jurors thought Hawkins should be indicted. They stated flatly they would never convict. Since no jury could be impaneled, no trial could occur.As a result, Key West officials allowed the captain, although technically “imprisoned,” to wander freely around Key West. Meanwhile, the duel and murder became a national cause celebre. Florida territorial governor William Duval used the case to rail against the practice of dueling.

But not everyone opposed duels: Monroe County’s representative, Richard Fitzpatrick, enthusiastically supported them. Eventually, Florida’s Legislative Council passed an act to free Captain Hawkins. Now liberated, the hot-headed captain departed Florida, and in the following years, rose to the rank of commodore in the Texas Navy. It seemed that the murderer had escaped both legal justice and cosmic “karma.” Then, on a visit to New Orleans in 1837, Charles Hawkins contracted smallpox and died. He was only 35.

n Jan. 21, Key West women honored the historic Women’s March of 2017 with a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to reducing violence against women. As Keys women gathered at the Southernmost end of Duval Street with their sisters, daughters, and friends, organizer Natalia Duke reminded them to consider a larger context of women’s rights.

“When we fight against our own oppression, it can be easy to

assume that everyone is having the same experience,” she said. “However, it’s important to remember that as women, we experience forms of structural oppression and violence differently.” Duke went on to cite higher (“more than double”) rates of homicide against black, Native, and transgender women.

Among other things, Duke asked: “How are we showing up when no one is watching? Are we doing the work necessary to understand our participa-

tion in these systems of power, privilege and oppression that surround us and are within us?”

She cited aiding the struggle of immigrants and minorities as well as bringing our “One Human Family” ethos alive with action. ey West Theater and The Big Stage Productions are proud to present Nashville Songwriters “In the Round” on Sunday, Jan. 27. Key West Theater will host Phillip Lammonds, Ken Johnson and Andi ZackJohnson, as part of a series featuring artists performing their hit songs and telling the stories behind them.

Key West and Nashville have a longterm relationship, with acts like Kenny Chesney and the The Zac Brown Band putting the Southernmost City on the map as a destination for great country and bluegrass. Local singer/songwriter Nick Norman has been a force behind “The Big Stage Productions” events, presenting big names in intimate settings.

“In the Round” will include: Phillip Lammonds, a songwriter and instrumentalist from the musically rich mountains of North Carolina. From his childhood in the mountains to his time in the South Carolina Lowcountry, a melting pot of sounds and rhythms formed his musical sensibilities. Lammonds’ songs have been recorded by artists like Lee Brice, Jerrod Niemann, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Edwin McCain, Craig Morgan, Kellie Pickler, Mo Pitney, and Dylan Scott.

Ken Johnson, whose songs have been recorded by artists including Uncle Kracker, Tyler Farr, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Tim Montana and The Shrednecks, Harry Connick Jr., and Vince Gill.

Johnson’s newest release is “Lonestar Memoir,” an EP project with long-time friend Giles Perkins. Johnson and his wife, Andi, are known as the popular new children’s music duo Huck and Lilly.

Andi Zack-Johnson is a singer/songwriter from British Columbia and has written songs recorded by artists such as Brothers Osborne, Josh Thompson, Danielle Peck, Etta Britt, Drew Gregory and more. She and her husband Ken co-wrote Thompson’s hit “Beer On The Table” and Britt’s “Make It Fast,” which was featured on “Good Morning America.”

n Jan. 22, former Key West Mayor Craig Cates formally announced his intention to run for a seat on the Monroe County Commission in 2020. Cates, who served as Key West mayor for nearly a decade from 2009 to 2018, was one of Key West’s most popular Craig Cates, the forpoliticians during his unprecmer Key West mayor, will seek a county edented tenure in the city’s top commission seat in seat.

CONTRIBUTED No other candidates had registered for the District I seat — meaning a potential showdown could be looming in November 2020 between Cates, a Republican, and Democratic incumbent Danny Kolhage. However, it is still unclear whether Kolhage, the current mayor pro tem, will seek re-election.

Cates said he felt the timing of his announcement will offer ample time to meet with constituents and leaders throughout Monroe County.

“I’m honored to have another opportunity to serve the people of Key West and my district,” said Cates.

“But this position is unique. While I represent the voters in my district, it’s equally important to understand the needs of the entire county and how we impact one another—and how we can work together towards common goals.”

AIR SUPPLY BRINGS TIMELESS TUNES TO KEY WEST

T

here was a time people only listened to music in the car and woke to top ten hits on the clock radio. Back in the ‘80s, songs seemingly came from everywhere (thank you Publix, which still pipes the tunes of our youth), launching iconic legends like Air Supply, the musical duo of Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell. With the ambiguous name Air Supply, the friends from Down Under who had a passion for the Beatles and a penchant for melodies and ballads quickly rose to the top of American charts. Here in Key West on the Sunset Green Event Lawn on Friday, Jan. 25, audiences are bound to know the songs of the concert by heart. But don’t expect a mellow evening: said Hitchcock, “It’s rock ‘n’ roll.”

It was the song “Lost in Love” that caught the ear of the infamous industry guru, Clive Davis, who signed them to Arista records in 1980. The song immediately rose on the charts and became the 1980 Song of the Year. The follow-up single was “All Out Of Love,” which rose even more quickly. They had a run of seven (!) top five singles, including songs like “The One that You Love,” “Every Women in the World,” “Making Love Out Of Nothing at All,” “Here I Am” and “Even the Nights are Better.” (Admit it, folks you know every lyric).

“I remember holding our first 45 record in 1976, and I said to Graham, ‘this is forever,’” said Hitchcock. “It’s amazing, I was astonished then and now even more astonished that we

are still here today.” The duo’s relationship has never faltered, “We weren’t young when we started (in their 20s, and Hitchcock will be 70 this year), we didn’t have super egos, we had respect for each other. He didn’t want to be a singer, I didn’t want to write songs, and we had no brothers. We laugh a lot; I just love the guy to death.”

Air Supply is still in demand, performing roughly 150 gigs a year, and recently performed its 500th concert in Las Vegas.

Hitchcock has never played here previously, but he recalls a gig in Cuba back in 2005 right before a hurricane. “They built tunnels to walk though, so we couldn’t see until we were on stage and then I just stopped. There were 175,000 people there, all I could see were people, and they sang every song.”

Even today, trendsetters like Ryan Reynolds have put Air Supply songs in movies like “Van Wilder” and “Deadpool 2” (“I’m All Out Of Love,” for both). “It was amazing, all of a sudden everyone was texting me after ‘Deadpool 2’ came out. It’s a dark, ruthless biopic, and director Adam McKay doesn’t pull any punches. The black comedic tone has received mixed reviews, but audiences agree that it’s a rollicking thrill ride through fraught times in the country, from the aftermath of George W. he Keys haven’t avoided the impact of the federal government shutdown.

In response, local organizations like Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) have added more staff and volunteers to serve the increase in clients. SOS pantry served 200 Coast Guard families last week. “It is looking like this will be an even busier week when the numbers are all in,“ said Raquel Rojas, pantry manager. Historically, SOS has served the indigent and working poor throughout the Keys. Yet adjusting to demand isn’t new: SOS partnered with Red Cross to feed those affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Star of the Sea Foundation began in 2006, and its experience operating a soup kitchen out of St. Mary’s Church Basilica School for 39 years brought a clear understanding of the hunger problem in our community. SOS services began with the pantry on McDonald Avenue on Stock Island, providing prepackaged food for families and the elderly. Now the message of “Amazing Grace” flows through the doors of the “self-serve pantry” on United Street. Families are able to choose their own groceries to meet their particular

needs. “The current self-serve venue offers more client satisfaction and means less food waste,” said Rojas.

Rojas came to Key West from Cuba with her 3-year-old son some 40 years ago. She has been with the pantry since its inception, and her son and daughter grew up there.

In its new location since summer 2018, SOS receives and distributes 70,000 pounds of produce per week, in addition to meat and dairy products.

USDA and Farm Share are the primary source of food, as well as Fausto’s and Publix.

Monday through Friday, bright and early, Emily Nixon, deputy director, and Suzie Bruels, registered dietician and kitchen director, arrive at the SOS Kitchen on United Street to greet the first shift of volunteers. Donning caps and aprons, the volunteer force begins to prepare healthy foods for distribution to community day cares and after-school programs like Bahama Village Music Program, Boys and Girls Club, Sunshine Day Care,and now a pilot senior program at Henry Haskins Senior Center.

community,” said Bruels, who also directs the education arm of the mission. Giving youngsters “hands on” experience with food offers kids new food opportunities and helps them develop healthy eating habits, helping address the nationwide child obesity problem.

SOS Foundation is proof that Key West is a little town with a big heart. Volunteers are the lifeblood, and their schedule can be demanding. Bruels, like many salaried staff members, started as a volunteer. She came to SOS as an AmeriCorps volunteer in 2016, when the “Kitchen” program began.

Over the years, SOS was able to grow its outreach program. The new property and building is owned by the City of Key West and leased to SOS for 10 years, at $1 per year. The Kitchen boasts state-of-the-art equipment and refrigeration, purchased through grants developed by Nixon.

Nixon has been with the mission since 2014, writing grants and organizing fundraising efforts.The goal for 2019, she said, is to execute a contract with Monroe County Social Services Senior Nutrition Programs, from Key Largo to

Key West. The nutritious meals, each consisting of five components — milk,protein, grain, fruit, and vegetable — are served to 20 agencies. The meals total 1,200 per week. If you stop by the Kitchen, any given day, you will see volunteers peeling and coring apples for homemade applesauce, filling Popsicle bags with fruit yogurt, or making peanut butter nutribars. SOS Foundation lives up to its mission of “hunger relief and food recovery and distribution.” There is even a special rack in the pantry with foods to accommodate the homeless without cooking facilities. Nothing is wasted: produce no longer fit for human consumption is fed to animals at the Sheriff’s animal farm.

PLAY EXPLORES RELATIONSHIP THAT’S RARE IN THEATER

T

heater isn’t always kind. Sometimes it throws a punch that feels real, is unexpected and leaves a mark.

That’s what happens when the play is written by the daughter of a famous playwright. The theme “like father, like daughter” permeates Halley Feiffer’s play, “I’m Gonna Pray for You So Hard,” now playing the Studios of Key West and it hits head-on. She is the daughter of the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, who also is a playwright and screenwriter. The family business has left an indelible mark on her and now on audiences as well.

Theater XP and The Studios presents “I’m Gonna Pray for you So Hard,” starring Bob Bowersox as David Berryman, the playwright father, and Melody Moore as Ella Berryman, his daughter and an anxious young actress. In Berryman’s upper West Side apartment, the two are awaiting reviews of Ella’s new play. But it’s complicated.

“You kids r so f#*ing precious with your language nowadays,” says David, crass and brutally honest. The conversation is fueled by alcohol and drugs and quickly peels back the complicated layers between father and daughter. The father, still living in his glorified past, has an ego set upon drilling his ideas and hard opinions into his daughter.

Ella, dutiful and naive, is desperate for her father’s approval, going so far as to ask, “If I don’t make it, will you still love me?” The relationship can only be described as toxic and, at times, cruel. But when all is said and done, the child still learns from parents, whether it’s good, bad or, yes, even ugly.

Bowersox was made for this role. His nuanced and raw ability to portray such a complicated and difficult character is not lost. He captures the gray areas of male frailty and does not shy away from the truly gut-wrenching moments. In the end, David Berryman is neither hero or villain. Bowersox treads confidently into that murk of human condition and uncovers its beauty and ugliness with acute attention.

What seemingly can be dismissed as a weak character in the first act, Moore does a thunderous job of turning in the end. Ella’s metamorphosis before the audience, exactly the point, is a journey that again reveals neither hero nor villain. Moore’s ability to portray her character’s duplicity is an equal and worthy challenge, matching the play’s own duplicitous nature.

“We don’t have a lot of art that’s really just about a father and a daughter,” said playwright Feiffer, “and that’s an important relationship. I think there’s something in the play that everyone can relate to.” There is quite a lot audiences can relate to as Feiffer presents an unfiltered look at the dirtiness that dwells beneath the love. Directed by Carole MacCartee, it’s a moving play that certainly captures and mirrors life in the most poignant and honest way.

GLITCH REIMAGINES THE BAR GAME

W

alking into Glitch feels like walking back in time, maybe into your best friend’s basement, if your best friend was the coolest nerd in the school. The massive leather chairs, a wall of action figures, stacks of board games and craft beers galore on draft make it a happy amalgam of past and present. It reminds you of being a teenager, but it satisfies the desires of the grown-up: a perfect espresso, a comfy chair, some (relative) peace and quiet.

A departure from the chaos of downtown was part of the inspiration for this Simonton Street retreat. Owners Keith St. Peter, Adam Levin, and Justin “Willy” Woods have been ruminating on the idea for years, but it only recently came to fruition.

for a while, but the closing of the Porch pushed it into being a reality,” said St. Peter, who was also a partner in the beloved locals’ bar.

“When the Porch started, it had a clubhouse, hangout feel, and it suffered from its own success,” It seems they’ve rediscovered that feeling at Glitch. Sitting at the bar, a person may overhear a conversation about the finer aspects of “Exploding Kittens,” (a game I am promised is not as gruesome as it sounds), or interesting craft beer combinations. The bartender, Eric, was chatting about potentially layering the Banana Bread beer with PB&J, like a black and tan.

Another patron suggests calling it an “Elvis.”

But beer isn’t the only thing on draft at Glitch — It’s a place for drinkers and non-drinkers alike, with a convivial atmosphere that

isn’t reliant on the momentary adrenaline of “shots shots shots!” nor the racket that comes along with it.

“We all wanted to make sure that we had these different options, so that someone who doesn’t drink feels as happy and welcome as someone who does.

We have root beer on draft, we have the cold brew on draft, we are getting Kombucha on draft.”

The atmosphere, too, is deliberate. With vintage comic books, low lighting, and colorful murals, it pairs sophistication with nerd culture, ‘80s and ‘90s tunes stream from the speakers, and kids play Ms. Pacman. A couple stokes flirty competition on the shuffleboard table.

It’s not only local-owned, but also showcases the art of Key West artists, with murals by Dan Schwab, Dave Hotz, Michael Hildebrand (who desinged The Porch shirts) and Margot Griffin. The murals create the sense of being wrapped in big a pop art blanket.

As for the memorabilia? “Some of the stuff was mine, but probably 80 percent of the stuff, I collected for the project.” St. Peter laughed, “My house looked like a f***ing Toys R Us for six months. … I’m sure my wife is happy the toys are out of our house.”

This is just the beginning for Glitch. Game nights have begun to take shape, and they have a projector with which they’re planning to project MarioKart and other video game tournaments. A large

private gaming room is upstairs, where employees or friends of Glitch can teach technique. Said St. Peter, “If there’s someone who’s great at a board game, they can pass it along and help people have a good time.”

The good times are rolling at Glitch with the frequency of the dice. Familiar faces comingle with new ones. Some strangers seem like they are already friends. The place is pretty inconspicuous.

Outside, it’s dark. There’s a broken “claw” machine with a sign that says “I married rich, so I no longer work.” On the sidewalk, the laughter inside is barely audible.

“We would like to keep it like this forever,” said St. Peter. “The crowd we are already getting is perfect in my mind.” Maybe it can stay frozen in time, like the memories conjured at Glitch.

n Thursday, Jan. 24, women of different colors, countries and creeds will take to Duval Street to mark the opening of the 28th annual Kelly McGillis Classic Tournament, put on by the International Women’s Flag Football Association (IWFFA). This year, teams from India, Guatemala, El Salvador, Afghanistan and, of course, the United States, will compete at Wicker Field in Key West.

Founder Diane Beruldsen started the league in ‘91 with just three teams, and it blossomed into the IWFFA and international tournament it is today.

“In ‘97 I started the women’s international organization,” Beruldsen said.

She decided to travel to other countries to open the appeal and introduce flag football around the world. “A Danish friend helped us introduce the sport in Denmark,” she said, “and we went to Norway in ’98.” Now, they have 48 women’s teams, and will be competing in 128 games across four fields on Friday-Sunday, Jan. 25-27.

Beruldsen recruits internationally and locally: for the girls league this year, she visited Poinciana, Horace O’Bryant, and Sugarloaf schools, all the way up to Key Largo to recruit players and coaches. Kristie Bareika, an insurance agent and mom of two (one at Sugarloaf), was one such recruit. “I was apprehensive about being any kind of coach,” she said, While Bareika didn’t have football experience, she does have experience being a mom, and encouragement is what seemed most important on the field.

“I know how hard it is to get out there and exercise and be vulnerable and do something you’ve never done,” she said. “And when the girls say ‘That

was a bad throw, I suck,’ I say, ‘No, you’re amazing.’” Bareika has had fun, too.

“I run the track with them and do the sit-ups or push-ups.” The girls’ league is made up of elementary and middle school-aged girls. Bareika’s daughter, Ava, 10, and her friends were interested when Beruldsen visited their school. They’ve had threehour Sunday practices for two months leading up to the tournament. It’s also given Bareika a new outlook on her daughter. “It’s funny, because I didn’t understand her athletic ability,” she said, “I hear others complain, but not her. I realized my daughter is really a powerhouse.”

Not only does the opportunity empower girls to work hard and play hard, it is open to all across socio-economic levels. Beruldsen said, “Today, we have 11 girls’ teams—and they play for free, without fees. We are a woman’s organization first, and then we are a sporting organization.” Said Barieka: “A lot of the girls don’t have a lot of resources, so this is a great outlet for them.”

The opening ceremony will feature McGillis herself and Mayor Teri Johnston. It’s also a cultural exchange, with international teams performing traditional dances and sharing sporting techniques. Said Beruldsen, “When our international teams come to the U.S., they have to do an interview.

The Afghanistan women just got an appointment for theirs, and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell backed us.” Perhaps some of these historic steps start on the field. What does a “good education” mean to you? A good education is a very important thing, because without it, you are lost, and you can also look foolish.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you? French Club—I enjoy helping the seniors, and Key West to be the Change—I like to mentor the kids.
