ith shops, galleries and businesses, activity around Morada Way is flowing. There’s a need, however, for infrastructure improvements, according to village officials.

The Morada Way Arts and Cultural District is looking for a way to shine a spotlight on the area that many deem to be the downtown of Islamorada.

During a Jan. 10 council meeting, lengthy discussion ensued over a way to go about enhancements in the form of parking, walkways and lighting.

While the village has plans pertaining to parking and walkways, there’s a need for funding. The recommendation of forming a business district then came about.

Village Attorney Roget Bryan noted that the village could have its own entity and process to supplement activity of the arts district. Bryan said the idea isn’t to step on the toes of the district or businesses. It’s a practical way for the village to be a public partner.

“From a staff perspective, it’s not about supplanting or stepping on the district’s toes,” Bryan said. “The idea is how can the village do things within its ability and power that will complement what the business district and council do.”

Council members and the public took time to chime in on the idea.

Councilwoman Cheryl Meads noted that Hurricane Irma took the village’s extra funds, but there are monies available through DAC and state agencies to build infrastructure in the area.

A business district, Meads said, would allow for funding for those needs.

“What we’re talking about is lights and paths on village property,” she said. “It’s a way to find money that’s not taxpayer money to create infrastructure downtown.”

Councilman Jim Mooney said the village has spent money on studies related to parking. Mooney told village staff to focus on the area from the Hurricane Monument to the Green Turtle.

“We have probably spent $200,000 in parking studies and walking studies,” he said. “We don’t need to restudy this. If you just focus on monument to the Turtle, forget everything else and accomplish the goal right there.”

Craig McBay is chairman of the nonprofit and co-owner of Florida Keys Brewing Company. With help from the village, McBay said the district could focus more on programming than infrastructure. And while lights and parking are essential, McBay noted that a map is also needed to show businesses’ locations.

“We have so much in this tight little area,” he said. “People could come and park and they can view a map. The more we kind of emphasize the special area we have, the more they’ll come back to our area.”

Andrea Johannson, interim director for the nonprofit, said the idea of the business district is to substantiate an identity for the area already known as the downtown and arts and cultural district. Outlining the area could drive more people there, she noted.

“When you go into Google Maps and you type in Islamorada and downtown, something would actually come up and outline it, (so) it might drive more people to it,” she said. “I think that would help the area and continue what it’s already doing.”

Council didn’t take action on the matter. Discussions ended with Planning Director Ty Harris telling council members that plans for walkways and lights would be made to bring back for discussion. “(We) already have a planning study on parking,” he said. “We can do some pretty good stuff on what to do for walkways and lights that go waist high and shine down.”

SUCCESSFUL RIDE Wounded Warrior cyclists warmly received

W

ounded Warrior cyclists were received by an exuberant crowd of well-wishers and grateful students in front of Coral Shores High School, during the first rest stop of their trek through the Florida Keys.

Coral Shores’ Principal Blake Fry and Principal Lisa Taylor from Plantation Key School, with the aid of their teachers and staff, assembled a magnificent welcome for these combat-wounded veterans.

These beautiful children, along with the adults present, poured their love and good will into the body and souls of each rider and everyone in attendance. Over the course of this therapeutic event’s history, I’ve not witnessed such excitement, sincere appreciation and passion shared with our warriors.

In preparation for their ride to Coral Shores High School, the Upper Keys VFW Post 10211, with the assistance of Arthur’s Island Kitchen and Citizen Well Wishers, affectionately embraced these disabled veterans when they arrived from Miami and disembarked from their buses at the VFW Post.

Post Commander and State Attorney Dennis Ward precisely worked out all the details involved with a medically sensitive operation. Marine Corps Major and VFW Quartermaster Jason Kendall and his wife Marketa Kendall, along with our esteemed Veterans Service Officer Gary Johnson, worked diligently throughout the early morning setting up the VFW for an appropriate acknowledgement of these honored guests. They secured a generous donation of delicacies from Ms. Liz Braun at the Dunkin Donuts store in Tavernier.

American Legion Post 145 came all the way up from Islamorada with their armored personal carrier to join in the respectful gathering for these warriors. At the high school, members from Post 145 interacted with students and allowed them to board and experience their novel piece of military equipment.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Captain Donald Fanelli, along with their deputies, protected and maneuvered these injured riders successfully to their destination. Without their support, this event would not be possible. State and FWC law enforcement officers were ever at the ready to assist these veterans. Of note was the Marathon Fire and Rescue Ambulance and officers who drove all the way to the Upper Keys VFW Post 10211 just to ensure a safe passage for these riders.

Fire and Rescue departments, along with the Ambulance Corps from Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada, put together a patriotic and attractive display depicting gratitude and support for the sacrifices endured by these wounded veterans.

The Florida Keys Electric Cooperative provided an essential gift of chilled water, so that these riders might proceed.

Kindness, compassion and unadulterated goodness rained upon the Wounded Warriors as they traveled south on U.S. 1. Appreciative bystanders gathered alongside the highway, graciously extending their good will and encouragement to the cyclists.

It’s always the unsung heroes who make events such as this a success. If I failed to mention your invaluable contribution, please forgive me. During the ride I was in the mist of memories of those Marines I was privileged and honored to serve with, who didn’t return nor substantially recover from their wounds.

BLOOD MOON RISING HERE COMES THE GREAT AMERICAN (LUNAR) ECLIPSE

F

rom Sunday evening to Monday morning, Jan. 20-21, the entire U.S. will be treated to a total lunar eclipse — what the media likes to call a “Blood Moon” eclipse. At 9:36 p.m., the moon will sweep into the Earth’s penumbra, or outer shadow, causing our nearest neighbor in space to darken gradually. Don’t expect to see any changes in the moon’s appearance right away, though — it takes about 20 minutes or so until keen-eyed observers will begin to notice slight shading on the eastern (left) limb.

Roughly an hour later, the moon will encounter the Earth’s darker, inner shadow called the umbra, which will visibly reduce the once-bright full moon to a thin crescent and then ultimately to an eerie ruby-colored orb at the total phase, as red light refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere falls onto Luna’s surface. Totality begins at 11:42 p.m. and lasts for just over an hour. I always find it eerie at totality to see both a blood-red moon hanging in a darkened sky, and also how dark the landscape becomes after having been bathed in bright moonlight earlier that evening. At 12:44 a.m. totality comes to an end, and the eclipse phases now reverse themselves until the entire eclipse comes to an end at 2:49 a.m. local time. Being that dawn brings a workday, I can safely say I will not be sticking around to see the final stages of this eclipse!

I’m calling this the Greater American Eclipse because many more people across the country, including right here in the Keys, will view this totality compared to the Great American Total Solar Eclipse that the U.S. experienced back in 2017. Of course, a total lunar eclipse has none of the drama of a total solar eclipse, but still is a very beautiful sight to behold, as the normally bright full moon first “shrinks” then dramatically changes color. I always find it fascinating to see how many more stars become visible as the moon’s brightness dwindles and the sky darkens to reveal it amid the constellation in which it happens to be temporarily residing (in this case, Gemini heading into Cancer).

As you sit outside with drink in hand watching this spectacle, notice that the edge of the Earth’s umbra is round. This was an important discovery to ancient astronomers, as they made the connection that a round Earth would produce a round shadow— voila! But somewhere between then and Columbus’ time, this knowledge was lost,

and it took some intrepid explorers traversing oceans without falling off a flat Earth to confirm what the ancients had already known.

After your second drink, you may wonder why we don’t see a lunar eclipse at every full moon. The answer is a simple one—the moon orbits the Earth at an inclination of 5 degrees, so its orbit takes it north or south of the Earth’s shadow most months when it’s full. Only when the sun, earth and moon appear to make a straight line in space do eclipses occur, as one does this month.

Even though we now know what causes eclipses, they are still a surreal sight in the sky. Imagine, then, the fear they caused in former times, when most people had no idea what was causing their familiar full moon to unexpectedly shrink, darken, then redden without warning. Columbus used a lunar eclipse to his advantage when faced with almost certain death. On his fourth and final voyage to the New World, his ships were in bad shape from wood worms and weather, and he and his crew were almost out of provisions and were receiving no further help from the Native Americans, who already had deemed their guests outstayed their welcome. Thinking of how to save himself and his men, it dawned on him that there would be a total lunar eclipse taking place in a few days’ time, and he realized

he could manipulate this celestial event to potentially save all their lives.

Armed with this advance knowledge, he told the leader his god was angry that they were receiving no assistance from the locals, and that as a sign of his god’s displeasure, the moon would be removed from the sky.

Once the eclipse began, the leader and his people began to react in fear, eventually agreeing to help the Columbus party. Upon hearing this, the admiral retired to his cabin and “pleaded” with his god to restore the moon to the sky, which of course, happened, pleasing the local people and ensuring the survival of Columbus and his crew. How might have history been written had the eclipse not happened when it did?

One last note: total lunar eclipses are notoriously unpredictable in their appearance, which can range from very bright to dark reddish to almost invisible, mostly due to the amount of particulates in the Earth’s atmosphere, which can absorb the red light that would normally fall on the moon during totality (I’m predicting a fairly bright eclipse, since the moon won’t travel too deeply into the Earth’s umbra). But of course, none of this means anything if we get an overcast sky on eclipse night, so let’s hope for clear weather. Happy viewing!

T

he first post office in the Florida Keys was established in Key West during the month of February in 1829. The post office was on the corner of Caroline and Front streets.

Dr. Henry Waterhouse was named its first postmaster. Waterhouse has been described as having a sallow complexion with sunken cheeks and ill-fitting dentures. His false teeth were said to have been carved from the tusk of a hippopotamus. In 1834, Waterhouse would move to Indian Key with his only son.

The island chain’s second post office had been established at Indian Key the year before, on May 21, 1833.

Silas Fletcher, considered the island’s first white settler, became its first postmaster. Waterhouse would replace Fletcher to become Indian Key’s second postmaster. On Jan. 17, 1835, Waterhouse decided to venture out from Indian Key in a small boat with his son for a night of fishing. A tremendous gale blew through the darkness. In the morning, it was discovered that Waterhouse had not returned.

Boats were immediately launched to search for Waterhouse and his son.

BRIEFLY Baygrassfest back for seventh year ICE’s Seventh Annual Baygrass Bluegrass and Craft Beer Festival begins Thursday, Jan. 18 and goes to Friday, Jan. 20 at Founders Park. The festival features multiple Grammy-winning artists, more than 15 bands and 20 Florida craft beer breweries.

‘Uncorked’ highlight set for Saturday The Uncorked Food & Wine Festival, an 11-day event of drink and food in Key Largo and Islamorada, is underway. The festival highlight is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, from noon to 4 p.m. (early entry with VIP ticket) at the Postcard Inn Beach Resort and Marina in Islamorada. Area restaurants and wine experts will come together for the Grand Tasting, to present samples of their finest cuisine and wines. Charles said outside dining caters to those who want to drink by the bar and enjoy entertainment, families who want to enjoy a nice meal by the water and couples who want to sit toward the back to enjoy a glass of wine and view of the sunset.

“Outside, there’s 100 seats, plus the bar that’s covered,” Charles said. “We pride ourselves not only on fresh local seafood, but the best happy hour in town.”

With more than 30 reinforced glass floor panels, there’s room at the Glass Bottom Tiki Bar to view the fish and underwater sea life. Or patrons can watch sports on more than a dozen large flat screens while dining. On select nights the entertainment continues with live music from local bands.

Those coming by boat can stop at the marina, which has 55 slips available for rent and can accommodate power or sailboats up to 85 feet in length.

he home port for locals since 1950, Pilot House in Key Largo is the hideout off the highway that provides fresh local seafood and a true Florida Keys experience by the water.

Mark Charles, Pilot House general manager, says the restaurant has some of the finest waterfront dining with its proximity to the marina and its Glass Bottom Tiki Bar. The establishment has been featured on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” as well as the Netflix series “Bloodline.”

“We are a local, family-friendly restaurant, and we have a menu that fits all,” Charles said. “A lot of the staff are here year to year, so they’re well acquainted with our customers.”

Patrons can start with one of many appetizers, including steak house onion rings, hot creamy crab dip and fried tostones, which are twice fried plantains with guacamole, pico de gallo and micro cilantro. There’s also sushi, oysters and one of the new items in the Pilot House: spicy shrimp avocado ceviche that’s served with tortilla chips.

For a main dish, try the Pilot House Harvey Fish sandwich. Charles said the fish sandwich was developed back in the ‘70s. Featured on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” the sandwich comes with tomatoes, American cheese and tartar sauce on toasted whole wheat bread.

‘DIVE INTO ART’ Exhibit features work of Art Guild, students

A

rt by members of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles and local students, as well as select works from some pioneers of underwater painting, are on display through April 17 at the History of Diving Museum.

The museum, at MM83 bayside in Islamorada, opens its new featured exhibit “Dive Into Art,” on Thursday, Jan. 17. Using the ocean as their inspiration, all of the artists interpret the underwater world through various media and styles.

Through a grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, the museum was able to collaborate with the Art Guild, Key Largo School and Plantation Key School. More than 200 students molded clay and waved paintbrushes to produce an immersive reef environment for viewers to enjoy. Wooden sea creatures, each uniquely painted, hang in the exhibit. There is also a large reef scene painted on canvas, which hangs behind a colorful ceramic reef teeming with sea critters. Students who participated in creating the exhibit will be visiting the museum, thanks to an additional grant.

The art produced by the guild members includes paintings, underwater photography and mixed media works depicting the waters surrounding the Keys and our interactions with it. The artwork is available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the museum.

Special events are planned during the exhibit. On Friday, Feb. 1 from 4 to 6 p.m., members of the community, schools, and museum are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting celebrating the exhibit, which will be open late to give the community a chance to view it. On Saturday, Feb. 9, the museum will host a Paint & Sip class, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Participants will paint a loving pair of French angelfish. There will also be an art workshop on Saturday, March 16 with more details to follow.

Good Health Clinic offering service to low-income

T

hrough the Good Health Clinic, a housekeeper who just made ends meet was able to get the insulin she needed for her Type 2 diabetes. A boat captain received the screening and cataract surgery needed to extend his career to provide for his family.

The Good Health Clinic’s mission is to provide health care to low-income, uninsured residents in the Keys. With offices in Marathon and Tavernier, the clinic can be the primary-care home for those who meet the eligibility requirements.

“People can come here for things like annual exams and more specialized care like chronic disease management,” said Kate Banick, executive director. “Some people will register and get a wellness exam. If they get sick, they come in.”

Banick says the Good Health Clinic’s network has 100 doctors in the Keys, from neurologists to optometrists, who donate time.

“This intense, large network of doctors have come together and are giving comprehensive health care in our office,” Banick said.

The Good Health Clinic is celebrating its 15th year serving the community. Banick said it helps many in the workforce who are just making ends meet.

“Over 65 percent of our patients work full-time, have jobs, but can’t afford health care,” she said. “We’re aiming to have a healthier community and support the working class in the community by providing them an option for health care.”

Jack Butler, the board chairman, said the clinic is important to those who cannot afford health care. ”It’s a fantastic way to promote a healthier community in and of itself,” Butler said.

Supporters include Baptist Health South Florida, Health Foundation of South Florida, Ocean Reef Community Foundation, Board of County Commissioners Human Services Advisory Board and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. More information is at thegoodhealthclinic.org.

ontestants beware: Upper Keys Weekly is ready to take the trophy from the Florida Keys Electrical Co-op. The Weekly has entered the race, with three other contestants so far.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Weekly will have a lionfish fry in partnership with Coastal Realty and Islamorada Diving Center. The event will be held at Coastal Realty from 1 to 4 p.m. John El Koury will be doing the lionfish fry.

“It’s the best in the world,” he said. “I got the recipe from a local boat captain.”

There also will be lionfish ceviche using a recipe from Andrew Zimmern, culinary expert and chef.

Islamorada Brewing Company will be donating beer for the function. Come and enjoy the casual afternoon with some beer and good food, with all proceeds going to benefit The Good Health Clinic. There will be a raffle for a Riva golf cart, and lionfish jewelry for sale.

From its inception, 41 contestants have participated in the Big Kahuna with a half-million dollars raised for the Good Health Clinic. This year’s contestants so far are Walt Stephens, of Florida Keys Electrical Cooperative; Dr. Thomas Morrison, of Mariners Hospital; and Alina Davis, real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Schmitt.

Big Kahuna is an eight- to 16-week fundraising marathon. People are nominated and invited to participate in Big Kahuna based on their relationship with the community, upstanding citizenship and capacity to raise money. Banick said the fundraiser usually brings in 20 percent to 25 percent of the clinic’s operating funds.

The Big Kahuna awards ceremony will take place March 16 at Islander Resort. Tickets are $125 each and available at the Good Health Clinic or online at Facebook.

‘Fish Guyz’ second season underway

W

ith more catches, laughs and spotlights around the community, “The Fish Guyz” are back for a second season on the Discovery Channel.

“It was every bit of fun, if not better,” Lain Goodwin said in a recent interview with the Weekly. “We have a lot of fun and laughter in what we’re doing, but at the same time we’re trying to create new stuff.”

The second season kicked off Jan. 5. With 13 shows slated this year, Goodwin, of Dirty Waters Charters, and George Clark Jr., of Rodeo Charters, are back to provide relaxed, educational and entertaining fishing experiences. The Fish Guyz have over 15 years of outdoors television and radio production experience and 30-plus years of fishing guide experience. What makes them a successful team on TV is their laid-back and engaging personalities.

“We built that chemistry going back to a radio fishing show; at one point we were doing it five days a week,” Clark Jr. said. “A few buddies would be hanging out and we’d talk fishing. We were able to play off each other on the radio. It’s a natural fit.”

At Sundowners, their boats sit next to one another. Goodwin notes that what viewers see on TV isn’t scripted in any way.

“We go out and do our thing and talk naturally,” Goodwin said. “We view the upcoming episodes and it’s funny for us because we forget what we say.”

Growing up watching fishing shows, Clark said, he was captivated with the ocean. Clark was able to host “Reelin’ in the Keys” a few years back, for which he had the chance to go up and down the Keys and fish with people.

“It was a cool experience,” Clark said. “That show wasn’t going to be produced any more. I talked to Lain and told him ‘Let’s do a TV show together and we’ll show us showing the Keys. It’s going to be that lifestyle of the Florida Keys and how we live our lives down here.’”

When they were pitching the show to networks, Goodwin and Clark were asked what separates them from other shows. Their was response was simple.

“Lain and I,” Clark said. “I said, ‘You know what, you’re just going to have to see what we put out there using our local knowledge, which is a complete different deal compared to other shows.’ I think that grabbed people.”

On top of the fishing excursions, the show also features a land-based segment where local businesses are highlighted, as well as a cooking segment with The Pilot House.

“With Discovery, they wanted a lifestyle show,” Clark Jr said.

“They wanted to see the area and Florida Keys and local areas, and that set us up to do field trips and have fun around the community.”

The Fish Guyz say they thank friends in the Keys community for all the support.

“They’re really getting behind us and supporting what we’re trying to do,” Clark said.

Fishing has been very consistent on both sides of the islands this winter; in particular, the blackfin tuna bite has been insane! I get daily reports of BFTs in the 25-pound-plus range being caught in the 200- to 300-foot depths from Key Largo to Marathon on live baits. Sailfish are on the bite as well and cobia are here for the taking too. The islands out back and the flats are holding huge numbers of snook, reds and sea trout.

Take the time this week to get out on the water, whether from a boat, bridge or hidden shoreline. While you are out here, do Mother Nature a favor and pick up any trash you will unfortunately see. What is the dumbest rule at your school? The dumbest rule at my school is that we can’t wear any hoodies or certain jackets.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? “Change never stops.”

What organizations and activities are you involved with at ICS and why are they important to you? I am only involved with student government, but if I had the opportunity I would play sports again.

What are your plans after high school? After high school I would like to join the Coast Guard Academy.

What do you hope to be remembered for at ICS? I hope to be remembered as a smart, charismatic leader who is always ready to help.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? One of my favorite things to do in my spare time is to go paddleboarding.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

I am not going to make the Keys my permanent home because there is nothing to do here.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I would like to have at least one degree from college. Then I would like to have a stable job.

Finally I would like to have a wife or another significant person in my life.

t was no doubt a party during the Chairman’s Gala Magic of Motown on Jan. 12 at Playa Largo Resort and Spa in Key Largo. The evening featured the talented 7-piece live CK Band and special performances from “Steve Wonder” and “Michael Jackson.”

The net proceeds from the event go to fund business grants, scholarships and community beautification projects in the Upper Keys. The Upper Keys Community Foundation Inc., a newly formed nonprofit for charitable and educational projects in partnership with the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, hosted the event.

t’s next-level learning at Plantation Key School, and it’s known as Science on a Sphere. Invented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Science On a Sphere is an animated globe that can show dynamic, animated images of the atmosphere, oceans and solar system.

Principal Lisa Taylor said Science On a Sphere will provide state-of-the-art, accurate and up-to-the-minute scientific information for students to explore the world outside the island chain. Science On a Sphere is a room-sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a 6-foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Researchers at NOAA developed Science On a Sphere as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System science. “Plantation Key School is committed to provide as many resources as possible to provide knowledge to students and instill lifelong responsibility as a person who contributes positively to his or her community,� Taylor said.  The Science on a Sphere at PKS was made possible through donations by Jim and Mary Ann Bokor, $50,000; the Conch Scramble, $45,000; and Monroe County School Board Member Dr. Sue Woltanski, $1,000. Principal Lisa Taylor said the school’s teachers are excited to bring the interactive learning tool to students.
