According to CNN, scientists from the Galapagos National Park authority released 1,400 land iguanas last week on Santiago island — the first iguanas to walk the island since Charles Darwin reported a sighting back in 1835. Scientists with the Keys Weekly predict the number of iguanas to double every two weeks.

ocal residents came out to hear from County Commissioner and now-Mayor Sylvia Murphy during Monday’s Keys Connections lecture series by the Friends of the Key Largo Library. As mayor, she says, she signs what seems like “a billion-and-a-half papers.”

And while she gets to run the meeting, she joked that she’s trying to get a change to where the person who sits as mayor gets two votes, though she conceded, to laughs, that the idea probably wouldn’t fly.

During the hour-long talk, Murphy spoke about county happenings related to the Upper Keys. She then took questions.

Murphy specifically touched on tiny homes, which are suited for a single person or a couple.

Ecologically and environmentally, they don’t use a lot of space or utilities. Murphy said Monroe County decided to put three homes in the lower Keys since many residences were destroyed and some homeowners cannot afford to rebuild.

Houses will initially be used as demonstration or “model” homes, to showcase the concept to constituents to see what could be built as a replacement home. Murphy said she wanted one in Key Largo so people in the Upper Keys could see one. Her wish was granted, as county commissioners agreed to one on county property at 39 Jenny Lane.

“I think people up here need to see what it is and take advantage of it if they wished,” Murphy said. “At first it will be left vacant for people to go in and look at and see if they would like it or not.

Then it will be rented to a county worker.”

As for the new senior citizen meal site on Pearl Avenue on Plantation Key, Murphy said it will be ready in a few weeks. She said workers will move everything over and seniors will receive notification so they’re not going to the wrong place.

“They have to finish the repairs to the bathroom. That’s the only thing left to take care of,” she said.

Murphy also said the baseball fields at Harry Harris Park will be ready by February, and that should be met with a lot of cheering. Wilkinson Point and the pool walk around at the park will also see some work, which Murphy said is in the design phase. Boat ramps will also be redone.

Only one ramp will be closed at a time.

Repaving will begin in the neighborhood of MM 95 on both sides of U.S. 1. Come next year, Murphy said the county will be finished with a survey of all roads to see whether they need raising.

“They’ll know how many and how many inches on each road,” she said. “Then we can start talking about the (cost) — probably up in the billions of dollars.”

“Also keep in mind, what happens when you raise the road — where’s the water going? If you don’t have a place for it to go, you’ve made things worse,” she said. “This is where the design people are going with this: what to do with the water that isn’t going to be on the road any longer.”

tudents at Plantation Key School arrived back to school on Jan. 8 for the first class of 2019. They were greeted by a new state-of-the-art school facility. Students spent the morning touring the school and learning where classrooms, the gymnasium and offices were located.

“We are all very excited to open the school,” said Principal Lisa Taylor. “The teachers and staff have been working very hard to get the new building ready for the students’ return.”

Located in a quiet residential neighborhood at MM 90 bayside, Taylor said, the new building is bright and open to facilitate collaboration between students and staff. The facility offers state-of-the-art technology, specialized areas for instruction in science, art, music and a gymnasium — something the old school didn’t have.

“We have a feature called Science on a Sphere that will bring exciting global instruction right into our little island school,” Taylor said. “All classrooms are equipped with many new features like ClearTouch computers and flexible seating.”

People enter the facility through Discovery Boulevard.

Taylor notes that it’s a very exciting hallway, as there’s a 30-plus-foot interactive map of the Keys with interesting historical information.

In addition, the Media Center, Makers Lab and Think Tank are all featured classrooms along the route into the classroom building. The cafeteria is also a learning center with interactive science displays.

“The Performance Center is incorporated in the cafeteria with a stage and seating for performances,” Taylor said. “We even have our very own Keys Café!”

Thorn Grafton, senior project manager with Zyscovich Architects, designed the facility. He said it’s an exciting place to learn, with flexible space that encourages interactive learning.

“They can personalize it and let it evolve ,” he said.

While the former PKS facility served the community well for many years, Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mark Porter said it lacked many modern features and elements needed to provide a diverse and quality education experience for all students.

“We have now moved to the other end of the spectrum, as the new PKS is an industry-leading facility that provides teachers with a wide variety of tools to meet the individual needs of their students,” Porter said. “I am pleased to be able to provide such a first-class, 21st century learning facility to the students and staff at PKS. I am grateful to the citizens of Monroe County for providing the resources to fund this effort through our half-cent sales tax.”

Monroe County School Board member Sue Woltanski, District 5, said the facility is a gem that will inspire learning for generations. She said it’s a fantastic example of public school support from the community.

“The school really brought community members in as well as people involved in the school to get planning together; to see that initial vision, of what PKS could be, come to fruition is super exciting,” she said.

Woltanksi said PKS always has great teachers, and they’ve waited a long time to have an inspiring location to practice their craft.

“The school will become a great place for students learning,” she said. “You walk in there and it will take your breath away.”

A

n 1835 hurricane wrecked the Spanish brig Gil Blas, which was carrying cigars and sugar from Havana to Spain. William Cooley, the justice of the peace and wrecking appraiser for the New River settlement (Fort Lauderdale), was hired to salvage the ship.

Cooley sailed north to the wreck site. While he was away, Indians attacked his homestead and killed his family, on Jan. 6, 1836. When Cooley returned to his burned home, he buried his family. He and others living along the river then fled in boats to the Cape Florida Lighthouse. From there, Cooley and others sailed south to Indian Key. It is said that after arriving at Indian Key, Cooley and others sailed back to the Gil Blas, salvaged several cannons from the wreck, and brought them back to the island.

Several years later, during the Indian attack at Indian Key, two small cannons were strapped to a barge at Tea Table Key and fired at the Indians. The cannons’ recoil jettisoned them backward, off the barge, and into the drink. The cannons had been the ones salvaged from the Gil Blas

The Matecumbe Historical Trust will present the “29 Points of Interest” Historical Trolley Tours in Islamorada on Saturday, Jan. 12, starting at the Islamorada Moose Lodge, 81573 Old Highway. A monitor is located at the front of the trolley showing photos of the past as visitors see them as they are today.

The tour begins at 10 a.m. and will take about one hour. Reservations are recommended. Tickets may be purchased on site. Adults are $15 a person, children 6 and under are free.

Lincoln death topic of lecture Keys History & Discovery Center presents The Lincoln Assassination and the Florida Keys, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Keys History & Discovery Center on the property of the Islander Resort in Islamorada. Cost for non-members is $10.

In July 1865, seven men and one woman were prosecuted for conspiring to murder President Lincoln. All were convicted and four were hanged. Military historian Fred Borch will talk about the Lincoln assassination trial and its connection with the Florida Keys – in that the four men who were not put to death were imprisoned at Fort Jefferson.

Program showcases FKAA The Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys’ January program will feature a presentation on the history of the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) given by FKAA Public Information Manager Julie Cheon.

Fishing tournament helps others The 30th annual Capt. Al Flutie “Over The Hill Rip-Off” Sailfish Tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 22, will benefit “Catch the Cure” for cystic fibrosis and the Monroe Association of ReMARCable Citizens.

Maps, history form presentation The Matecumbe Historical Trust free January presentation will be held on Monday, Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Island Community Church, MM 83.

“The History of the Seminole Wars and South Florida through 19th Century Maps,” will be an audiovisual presentation by Dr. John Nordt.

It will include a discussion of hydrology and the Everglades, the study of where the body of water comes from, the changes and the unique ecology of South Florida.

His lecture begins with understanding how maps have influence on our childhood and adulthood.

Nordt spent weekends in Islamorada in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His parents owned a Red Cross house in Islamorada. Maps line his office and home and books line his shelves.

Dr. Nordt is a board-certified specialist in orthopedic surgery.

He was a full-time instructor at the University of Miami and worked with the Miami Dolphins. He is an historian, active in the Historical Museum of Miami and the Map Fair. His practice includes the Keys, one day a month, and he flies his own plane to Marathon to care for his patients there. He has an office in Coral Gables on Le Jeune Road.

here will be some unusual traffic on the Overseas Highway this weekend.

At 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, nearly four dozen combatwounded veterans will arrive at VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo for a weekend of events that will take them to Key West for the Wounded Warrior Bicycle Ride.

John Donnelly, a trustee of the VFW post, said he hopes people will come to the post to see the veterans off, and that those along their route will greet them.

“I’m certain their uplifting thoughts and encouragement will help heal and assist them as they ready themselves for the ride ahead,” Donnelly said.

The 18 women and 29 men will set out from the VFW post, stopping for a water break at Coral Shores High School. The Upper Keys portion of the ride will end at Theatre of the Sea in Islamorada.

After a meet and greet at the Marathon Fire Rescue Station 14, the ride will head over the 7 Mile Bridge and stop at Veterans Memorial Park at the south end of the bridge.

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the veterans will ride from the naval air station on Boca Chica Key into Key West for a welcome ceremony and a community ride.

On Sunday, Jan. 13, the veterans will visit the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key, where they will have the chance to swim with the dolphins.

This marks the 14th year the Wounded Warrior ride has been held in the Keys. This year, 47 military veterans from 12 states and the District of Columbia, some just out of the hospital for the first time, will participate.

More than 200 patriotic banners and yellow ribbons will line U.S. 1 and downtown Key West.

rea businesses and an area non-profit are working to help veterans and servicemen and -women integrate into society.

The Long Walk Home, a nonprofit that supports veterans and active-duty servicemen and -women, has teamed up with Mack Gym in Key Largo for free and discounted memberships. On Saturday, Jan. 5, The Long Walk Home volunteers stood outside Mack Gym to speak with military members and vets and encourage them to sign up for a membership.

Sean McMahon, volunteer with The Long Walk Home, said vets and service members can sign up any time. McMahon, a Marine vet, says it’s a way to show care for those who served.

“The fact that 22 vets lose their lives (by suicide each day) is disgusting to me and it breaks my heart,” he said. “If you let guys know ‘I care,’ ‘I love you,’ ‘I’m here for you,’ you can affect one person at a time. That’s the goal.”

McMahon said one of the big things veterans miss when they get out is the camaraderie of being in the military. Through reduced and free gym memberships, McMahon said they’re trying to form camaraderie among vets and active service members in society.

“We want to network them together,” he said. “We want to bring them together as a family.”

Sean Hannon was busy speaking to vets and active service members about music. He’s been giving free guitars to veterans for the last three years. Hannon, from Massachusetts, says he’s given away almost 100 guitars since he started, and he says it’s his way to give back.

“Music is a healer,” he said. “All of the sudden you turn on the radio and you can feel great.”

Along with gym signups, food and entertainment, the day also saw the presentation of a $1,575 check to Veterans R&R Fishing Inc. and Capt. Ben Trainer, a Marine who provides veterans and active duty service members with a day of fishing and fun.

Ron Zaleski, a former Marine who trekked across the country for vets and started The Long Walk Home, has long worked to assist servicemen and -women in the community and keep them physically and mentally prepared for their next great mission. As a small non-profit, he’s urging the community to help in the cause.

“We’d like people to get involved,” he said. “What I would like people to do is find what brings them joy. Find their gift and then share that with others.”

BLUEGRASS NEXT TO BLUE WATER Seventh annual Bluegrass and Craft Brew Fest begins Jan. 18

CE’s seventh annual Baygrass Bluegrass and Craft Beer Festival features multiple Grammy-winning artists, more than 15 bands and 20 Florida craft beer breweries. This year’s three-day event, attracting visitors and musicians from around the nation, will be held on Jan. 18-20 in Islamorada.

“We’ve invited our favorite Florida breweries to join with some of the country’s top bluegrass, newgrass and Americana performers for three days of great music in the Florida Keys,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “We’ve got square dancing, jamming, local beer, and a grand Sunday concert with the stars and rising stars of bluegrass and newgrass.”

The main concert – on Sunday, Jan. 20 — at Founders Park, MM 87, Islamorada, runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Gates open at 10 a.m.) Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at baygrassbluegrass.com or the gate, with 17 and younger free. VIP tickets are available for $130.

The Baygrass Bluegrass and Craft Beer Fest will include two stages for continuous music, musical instrument vendors, food trucks, kids’ activities, and art and crafts vendors.

On Friday, Jan. 18, the weekend kicks off with a 6 p.m.

“Square Dancing in the Streets Party” at Morada Way Arts and Cultural District, MM 81.5 in downtown Islamorada. On Saturday, Jan. 19, a Pickin’ Party with five bands starts at 4 p.m. at Heartbreakers, 81611 Old Highway, Islamorada.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments to join in the jam sessions. Both events are free; however, a $10 donation per adult is appreciated.

Performers include the Road Band; Grass is Dead; Danny Barnes, Grant Gordy and Joe Walsh Trio; and Grant Farm Acoustic, said Robby McClung, the festival’s producer. ”Plus, there will be several of our favorite Florida craft breweries doing tastings and special releases throughout the weekend.”

At Sunday’s concert, attendees (especially families and kids) can enjoy a swim at the bayfront beach just steps away from the stage. Blankets and lawn chairs are permitted, but coolers and outside food and beverages are not.

Islander Resort in Islamorada is back, reinvigorated and ready for guests, following its closure from damage sustained from Hurricane Irma.

Unveiling its reimagined, luxury oceanside experience, the resort — built from the ground up — features 114 rooms on roughly 24 acres. Eric Carlson, resort manager, said in a recent sit-down with the Weekly that the resort maintains the Keys feeling while bringing new amenities and technologies that rival other resorts.

“We have a better product than we ever had on this property,” he said.

“We’re excited to show off some of our new features. The resort is brand new from top to bottom.”

One of the “wow” factors coming from guests, according to Carlson, is the landscaping throughout the resort.

Trees and plants give the Islander a true tropical resort feel. Carlson said ownership handled that project personally and did a phenomenal job.

“There’s more color and more privacy here,” he said. “Guests are going to find enhanced landscaping offers much more privacy than they had in the past. And every corner you turn there’s a hammock or a seat waiting.

There are plenty of areas to find your own space.”

Carlson says what separates the Islander Resort is its service, which includes transportation around the property 24 hours a day, poolside and beach-side service, new cabanas that’ll soon be available as well as massage tables under tiki huts.

There are activities for children to enjoy throughout the day so parents can get some time to themselves.

Along with a full-time concierge, guests have the ability to text to the front desk or to the restaurant with requests wherever they are on resort grounds, through a service called Kipsu.

Within the next couple weeks, Carlson said, the resort will offer offproperty transportation for guests using vehicles similar to FreeBee. The ride service moves guests around Upper Matecumbe.

As to the reception the resort’s getting, Carlson said it’s all been positive.

“People, from both our hotel guests and local residents visiting the property and using the restaurants, really seem to enjoy the changes,” he said. “It’s nice when people walk in and they’re wowed and can appreciate it more.”

While the best features of the property are the grounds and service, the resort also features two pools and a jacuzzi tub and a restaurant that’ll soon open. The resort also has a pier and an expansive beach where guests can enjoy water sports, yoga and relaxation.

“There is as much or as little to find here to do,” Carlson said. “We could’ve had 10 times the rooms. We offer our guests a unique experience to have for themselves. Every inch of this property has been touched, manicured, updated. We’re really excited to show off our new product here.”

Uncorked Food and Wine Festival ready to go

ncorked is back, combining some favorite events with some new ones to attract foodies and wine, beer and cocktail sippers and connoisseurs.

This year the feast kicks off on Thursday, Jan. 10 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 20. Area culinary experts join with the wine experts from Breakthru Beverage and Republic National to present food, wine and spirits.

The 2019 schedule showcases “foodie” events that include complimentary wine, beer and spirits tastings, gourmet dinners, cooking classes and more. This year a number of restaurants will feature a special prix fixe wine dinner menu throughout the festival.

Back by popular demand, the Key Largo Fisheries features its “Lobsterfest” and Snappers restaurant hosts its grape-stomping contest. Key Largo Chocolates will again host a Chocolate Meets Cabernet event for adults and, for the younger foodies, a popular junior chocolatiers’ cooking class is to be held with the Keys’ only chocolatier.

Multiple Sunday brunch opportunities are also planned, along with art-inspired food and wine events.

This year’s festival poster artwork is by Tere Kelley. Posters will be on sale throughout the festival and at the Grand Tasting and can also be purchased at Key Largo Art Gallery and Sundowners restaurant, with proceeds benefitting Florida Keys Community College.

slamorada Village Council will hold its first meeting of the year on Thursday, Jan. 11. On the agenda is discussion over developing a downtown business district for the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District.

In November, the council had a lengthy discussion about creating a district for the area that’s currently booming with activity. Councilwoman Cheryl Meads, who brought up the matter, said if the area became a business district, the village could apply for funding from DAC and monies from state agencies.

Meads noted an organization of volunteers has tried to drive a district and improvements. She proposed that the village should own the area, designate it as a business district and let staff put together the map, resolutions and details. She also proposed forming a citizen advisory committee that would likely be made up of business owners to participate.

“I don’t want us to miss out on DAC money or grant money for needed improvements in that district,” she said.

Mayor Deb Gillis said she met with the volunteers in November.

She said the organization was talking with the village and wanting an overlay district.

“I advised the committee there that it’s their district, they need to kind of take the lead, but we need to participate,” Gillis said. “(We could give) some kind of official approval from this council that our planning staff can help them work toward this overlay so they can apply for money and they can get DAC money and all those things.”

Councilman Mike Forster said it should be a public-private partnership where the parties share the costs of doing business there.

Village Attorney Roget Bryan said there have been a number of discussions over the years regarding the village’s involvement in the arts district. He said one of the driving factors was the need for a public partner to secure grant funding for their private sector grant writing.

ith signature custom-blended ground beef, sauces and more, Reelburger at Amara Cay Resort is hooking customers.

A favorite gathering spot for fun and adventure, Reelburger and its tiki bar anchor locals and guests for made-to-order burgers, fries, cold drinks and more. As for the burgers, there’s something for everyone to choose and enjoy.

Ryan McCurdy, Amara Cay’s food and beverage director, said what was once an Italian concept is now a place where some of the best burgers and sandwiches are crafted. Through a product mix report, McCurdy said he instantly found what people were looking for.

“Burger, burger, burger, chicken, wings and on the bottom was Italian,” McCurdy said.

“No one wanted Italian here. People came here to spend money on rooms but they wanted to chill.”

On the menu are a number of signature burger options. Take for instance the towering Backyard BBQ burger that’s made with a custom blend of ground beef, cheddar cheese, crisp lettuce, onion ring, vine-ripened tomato, dill pickles and applewood smoked bacon on a toasted challah bun. There’s also the mouthwatering bison burger, which McCurdy said is made from two different cuts of meat. The burger is piled with Canadian bacon, Swiss cheese, pickled onion, lettuce and tomato on a toasted challah bun.

Regarding the burgers, McCurdy said the restaurant has a special blend.

“It’s just made for us. No one else gets this blend,” he said. “Our company, we have over 150 hotels, and our vendor does a special for us.”

With a burger, try some sweet potato or crisp zucchini fries. Along with burgers, there’s also Big Salad “Burger Bowls” like the Sonoma Chicken Bowl, which is made with grilled crisp chicken breast, baby spinach, crisp greens, applewood smoked bacon, cucumber, tomato, avocado, red pepper, goat cheese and honey balsamic vinaigrette.

Also on the menu are appetizers like reel wings, crispy sweet Thai and garlic wings, steak quesadilla and smoked fish dip.

For dinnertime, there are options other than burgers, such as the Churrasco steak, seafood pasta, rosemary pan-seared chicken and local fresh catch.

As for the dining experience, there’s no shortage of places to enjoy the food along the water or inside the restaurant.

“If you’re a local, you can come in at any time,” McCurdy said. “Dine inside if you want air conditioning, but be outside where the majority of the people are. If you are a hotel guest, you can eat everything anywhere, inside, pool, pool deck, and the beach.”

COOLER WATERS HEAT UP

Patch reef fishing on the Atlantic side of the Keys is a good bet too, and really all you need is a rock pile, reef or ledge to anchor up current of and repeat what you’d do on the Gulf side.

There are acres and acres of hard bottom out there that has boulders, cracks, grass patches and scattered sponges and sea fans that will hold good life too.

The variety of fish is huge and you just might get mugged by a pack of sailfish, cobia and mahi as you chum for snappers and such on the patches offshore.

As usual know the areas you can fish and the areas that are Sanctuary Protection Areas where fishing is not allowed and know your limits. Use MyFWC. com on your phone for seasons and limits on the fish you plan on harvesting throughout your day. Now that you are here for the winter months, also make sure all your safety gear is in date and your fire extinguishers are operational and that you have PFDs and a throwable flotation device on board for a safe day on the water.

If there is a fish out there you’ll know it quickly; it may take 15 minutes or so before the action gets cranking and once it does you will stay busy until the tide or the chum runs out. Keep a 15-pound spin set ready with a 50-pound leader and a 3/0 hook or similar jig ready for a pinkish or bigger shrimp to pitch to a big cobia that will sooner or later swim past your boat during all this activity. You will have large king macks show up and assorted sharks crash your party as well, so be prepared. If you like tripletail like most anglers do, you need to run the trap lines for a few miles time to time and it should pay off.
