According to CNN, scientists from the Galapagos National Park authority released 1,400 land iguanas last week on Santiago island — the first iguanas to walk the island since Charles Darwin reported a sighting back in 1835. Scientists with the Keys Weekly predict the number of iguanas to double every two weeks.

ocal residents came out to hear from County Commissioner and now-Monroe County Mayor Sylvia Murphy during Monday’s Keys Connections lecture series by the Friends of the Key Largo Library. As mayor, she says, she signs what seems like “a billion-and-a-half papers.”

And while she gets to run the meeting, she joked that she’s trying to get a change to where the person who sits as mayor gets two votes. It was met with some laughs, and Murphy said it probably wouldn’t fly.

During the hour-long talk, Murphy spoke to residents about county happenings related to the Keys. She then took questions.

Murphy specifically touched on tiny homes, which are suited for a single person or a couple. Ecologically and environmentally, they don’t use a lot of space or utilities.

Murphy said Monroe County decided to put three homes in the Lower Keys since many residences were destroyed and some homeowners

cannot afford to rebuild. These efforts could help assuage the Lower Keys housing squeeze.

Houses will initially be used as demonstration or “model” homes, to showcase the concept to constituents to see what could be built as a replacement home. Murphy said she wanted one in Key Largo so people in the Upper Keys could also see one. Her wish was granted, as county commissioners agreed to one on county property at 39 Jenny Lane.

“I think people up here need to see what it is and take advantage of it if they wished,” Murphy said. “At first it will be left vacant for people to go in and look at and see if they would like it or not. Then it will be rented to a county worker.”

As for the new senior citizen meal site on Pearl Avenue on Plantation Key, Murphy said it will be ready in a few weeks. She said workers will move everything over and seniors will receive notification so they’re not going to the wrong place.

“They have to finish the repairs to the bathroom. That’s the only

thing left to take care of,” she said.

Murphy also said the baseball fields at Harry Harris Park will be ready by February, and it should be met with a lot of cheering. Wilkinson Point and the pool walk around at the park will also see some work, which Murphy said is in the design phase. Boat ramps will also be redone. Only one ramp will be closed at a time.

Repaving will begin in the neighborhood of MM 95 on both sides of U.S. 1. Come next year, Murphy said the county will be finished with a survey of all roads to see whether they need raising.

“They’ll know how many and how many inches on each road,” she said. “Then we can start talking about the (cost) — probably up in the billions of dollars.”

“Also keep in mind, what happens when you raise the road — where’s the water going?

If you don’t have a place for it to go, you’ve made things worse,” she said. “This is where the design people are going with this: what to do with the water that isn’t going to be on the road any longer.”

REP. DEBBIE MUCARSEL-POWELL CHECKS IN FROM THE HILL

n Jan. 3, Florida’s new 26th district representative, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, was sworn in to the House and began serving her constituents immediately. At the official ceremony, 40-plus members of MucarselPowell’s family attended, including her father’s Ecuadorian relatives, illustrating how she brings diversity and variety to the incoming freshman class. Mucarsel-Powell took the time to speak to the Weekly from her new Capital Hill office.

“It was impactful and emotional, especially having my kids on the floor with me.

It was truly the best experience of my life.

But it also came with understanding the responsibility of the job. We immediately got to work that day,” said Mucarsel-Powell. The new congresswoman worked well past 10 p.m. on her first day, working on re-opening the government.

“It’s our priority to re-open the government in order to get to work and do the things we were elected to do. We can’t deal with health care or climate issues if the government isn’t functioning,” said Mucarsel-Powell. She went on to explain the significant impact the shutdown has had on the Keys.

“In Florida, we have about 13,000 federal workers without pay. The Everglades is shut down during its busiest season and losing revenue on a daily basis, so it’s affecting our local economy. Our Coast Guard based in Islamorada is facing dire situations. They aren’t receiving paychecks and don’t have a lot of savings to pay their rent. They don’t have huge salaries to begin with, and we can’t expect federal workers to go without pay,” said the congresswoman. She points out that most terrorist threats come from our ports and airports, not our southern border, so weakening the Keys’ Coast Guard or Miami TSA can be detrimental.

She cited “no reason why we should hold our American government workers hostage because this administration and the president have a completely skewed view on what is effective national security.

We have already spent 40 billion on the border in the past decade, so it’s not that we aren’t concerned about the border.”

She noted the fact this administration has already passed a tax bill adding $1.8 trillion to our deficit, yet vital government programs are still being cut. “It’s not fiscally responsible to put another five billion in the southern border when it won’t provide the most effective national security.”

She said, “We need to put pressure on this administration to understand the impact of this government shutdown. This is not a game. Let’s open the government so we can have a debate about what’s best for our borders.”

Mucarsel-Powell was encouraged about the House’s intentions in the coming weeks.

“All of the bills we are working on so far are truly bipartisan bills. We want to show the Senate that we need to get these things done sooner rather than later. I am hoping the Senate takes it seriously.”

And as for Florida’s new governor, Ron DeSantis, taking office this week, Mucarsel-Powell said, “I want Florida to thrive, expand Medicaid, improve education and take action on climate change. I hope our new governor will do the right thing for all Floridians. I wish him the best and look forward to working with him in any capacity.”

‘BOBBY IN THE LOBBY’ IS BACK

BOBBY NESBITT PERFORMS THE GREATS AGAIN

W

ho isn’t charmed by Bobby Nesbitt? It’s hard to imagine anyone in recent Key West history who hasn’t had the pleasure of enjoying his delightful mixture of piano-playing and storytelling. Since 1976, Key West has been swooning over Nesbitt enchanting the ivories with the greats. “When I started there was a piano in every bar in Key West,“ said Nesbitt. And now he is back at one of his favorite venues after a five-year break, performing one of his greatest shows, “Bobby in the Lobby” at the Tennessee Williams Cabaret Jan. 20-21.

“It’s really wonderful to return to the original concept,” said Nesbitt.

“Bobby in the Lobby” started back in 2005 after Hurricane Wilma, when Nesbitt wanted to showcase his favorite singer/songwriters from the Great American Songbook. The show was an immediate success. It eventually grew worldwide, as Nesbitt has performed it on multiple cruise ships and has taken it as far as Tahiti, New Zealand and even the Amazon.

Changing it up a little, Nesbitt will be combining songwriters, with Act 1 dedicated to Rodgers and Hart,

famous for songs like “The Lady is a Tramp,” “My Funny Valentine” and “Isn’t it Romantic” and Act 2 dedicated to Jule Styne, who wrote the scores to “Funny Girl,” “Gypsy” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Joining him will be the fabulous songstress Carmen Rodriguez and, returning to Key West for these performances, the immeasurable Danny Weathers to round out a very entertaining show. Both have appeared with Nesbitt multiple times to perform “Bobby in the Lobby.”

“I promise no one will ever listen to the songs the same again, ” said Nesbitt. He loves to pepper the audience with the hidden stories behind each song and talks about the legends who sang them such as Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman and Frank Sinatra.

“These songs are so well written, and they aren’t easy to sing, but I can remember each one,” Nesbitt was fortunate enough to hear the originals “back in the day,” going to the clubs in New York City and “hearing the old guys do it right.” It’s now a fading genre that Nesbitt can still bring to audiences, much to everyone’s delight. THE STORY BEHIND SAM KAUFMAN’S COMMISSION VOTE

T

he city’s ongoing attempts to crack down on the practices of Duval Street cosmetic shops have been nearly overshadowed this week. The local media and resident response to charges of anti-Semitism leveled by Commissioner Sam Kaufman at the city commission meeting Jan. 2 have all but blotted out the particulars of the actual ordinance. The Jan. 2 meeting hosted a number of citizens in vocal support of a proposed ordinance to crack down on cosmetic shops.

The ordinance would supplement an existing state law prohibiting non-state-licensed cosmetologists from applying products, in the manner that Duval Street cosmetic shops have been reported to do. The ordinance would create a criminal penalty, including up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine, for businesses violating this.

This marks another effort on the city’s part to dissuade unscrupulous business practices on Duval Street.

A number of the cosmetic shops have come under fire from local activists for aggressive sales tactics — from luring in buyers with the promise of free samples to charging credit cards more than agreed upon. As previously reported by the Weekly, the consumer advocate group, the Rip-Off Rapid Response Team, led by community activists Bruce Mitchell and Tevis Wernicoff, has taken to picketing outside the stores. Their current focus for picketing is ERA Ageless at 617 Duval St. On Jan. 8, Wernicoff and the owner of ERA Ageless at 617 Duval St. had a meeting about the terms of a “responsible business practices agreement,” a good-faith agreement referencing obeying city laws as well as clear standards for their return policy.

If the owners do sign the agreement, Mitchell and Wernicoff agree to stop picketing in front of their store. As of presstime, the owners were reviewing the agreement with lawyers.

Several Rip-Off Rapid Response team members, including Mitchell and Wernicoff, testified at the Jan. 2 meeting, which resulted in a 5-1 vote passing the ordinance. Mary Lou Hoover was absent. The lone vote against the ordinance? Commissioner Sam Kaufman.

The Key West Citizen reported Kaufman’s dissent, citing his Jewish identity as a pertinent factor in the vote and describing it as “unclear why Kaufman broached the topic of religion” in the discussion of the cosmetic shops controversy. Kaufman was quick to act: in an email shared with The Weekly, he said the Citizen had not contacted him to clarify his dissent, nor had The Citizen cited Kaufman’s questions voiced at the meeting, reflecting a concern about the legality — not the bias — of the ordinance. More on that later.

Kaufman’s reasons for alleging anti-Semitism? Threefold. In the email to Citizen Editor Kay Harris and Publisher Richard Tamborrino, Kaufman cites “the signs of protestors referencing Jews.” He’s speaking of a sign held by protester Shirlee Ezmirly. While the Weekly was unable as of presstime to obtain the text of the sign, Wernicoff said the sign read, “I’m Jewish, and I’m protesting.” Others report the sign specified the shop was owned by “Jews.” Wernicoff said: “I didn’t think it was the right tone, and I asked her to put it away.” By all reports, Ezmirly did not put the sign away. Collaborator Bruce Mitchell denied any such language on protest signs. Kaufman noted: “At the city commission meeting, we had a woman say that the workers at a store were wearing stars of David, and she had a sign essentially saying Jews were operating the store. If you had a sign that said blacks, gays, or Cubans own the store, it would be a problem. Why depict the religion of the owners of the store?”

Kaufman also said in his email to The Citizen that he asked Wernicoff, who is Jewish, to “meet with other Israelis in our community, some who have lived, worked, owned stores on Duval Street for many years and who are not involved with the cosmetic shop.” Kaufman says Wernicoff responded with a “categorical ‘no.’”

Kaufman went on to remark to the Weekly that Wernicoff had said that “they are in it together,” implying that Israeli and Jewish members of the business community were colluding in favor of the shops. Wernicoff said, “I don’t recall say-

ing we can’t have a meeting,” though he and Kaufman agreed that they had a purposeful conversation regarding a future meeting. In this conversation, Kaufman describes leveling with Wernicoff about his internalized anti-Semitism, a claim inspired in Kaufman by Wernicoff’s described categorical comments about the Israeli and Jewish community in Key West. Wernicoff describes a similarly charged and ultimately positive conversation, after which he said, “I’ve had a great deal of soul searching, and I have asked myself if I’m acting in an anti-Semitic way.”

Both Kaufman and Wernicoff report willingness for a future conversation, proposed by Kaufman at a local pizza shop, for the men to sit down with other leaders of the Israeli and Jewish community, to discuss how to curb unethical business practices as well as anti-Semitic rhetoric in the community.

The final concern Kaufman cited in his email to The Citizen was a video circulated of Rip-Off Rapid Response Team leader Bruce Mitchell physically attacking a Jewish teenager — a tourist who had visited a cosmetic shop with his mother and sister (also in the video).

Mitchell said: “What happened before was…

I was facing the street, and this young man pushed me into the street and called me a racist and grabbed the sign and started running up the street, and I caught up to him and I grabbed the sign. All I was trying to do was get my signs back.” Mitchell called the attention the incident has garnered “a red herring.” While there certainly may be events leading up to the video taped material, in the video, Mitchell visibly physically attacks and kicks the young man.

Kaufman wrote “there is no place for violence on Duval Street.” Wernicoff concedes that the incident was “inexcusable,” and said “that won’t happen again, I hope.”

As of press time, the Citizen continues to print criticisms of Kaufman in the “Citizen’s Voice” and “Cheers and Jeers” sections. On Jan. 7, a “Citizen’s Voice” writer questions “Why is there this sudden, heretofore unmentioned concern regarding religion?” in reference to Kaufman’s concerns. Kaufman reports the Citizen has still not contacted him for an interview regarding his reasons for voting against the new ordinance.

And what are Kaufman’s reasons for his vote? Kaufman said: “The main reason I voted against the ordinance was not anti-Semitism or nationality. I want to make sure it will withstand legal challenge. We know there is a high likelihood this ordinance will be challenged in court, and we need to be sure that the state preemption issue is legally upheld, and we won’t put the city at risk with a claim that the city is overstepping its bounds in terms of how the city is regulating cosmetology.” At the Jan. 2 commission meeting, Kaufman asked a series of questions about precedents for state preemption in Florida. While City Attorney Sean Smith was not aware of such precedents, Commissioner Clayton Lopez said that Lakeland and Orlando have made similar ordinances. Kaufman asked: “Have Lakeland or Orlando had legal pushback?

State preemption is a significant legal issue, and there may be others. That should be our main concern, as when taxpayer dollars are at stake, it’s our responsibility. We must make certain we’re prudent and that we are making laws that aren’t exposing our taxpayers to potential damage in lawsuits.”

Kaufman cites the Ducks Tour case, in which the city denied a license to operate, citing the monopoly of Historic Tours of America, which runs the Conch Train. The city of Key West was sued by Ducks Tour Seafari, and the city settled for a pay-out of $8 million in 2009.

Kaufman claims that this due diligence on behalf of taxpayers is the real reason behind his vote, though he stands by his claim of antiSemitic rhetoric in the Key West community. To be fair, these moments in Key West history are well-documented (See sidebar). In more recent years, rhetoric surrounding Israeli-owned Tshirt and cosmetic shops has veered into such a categorization. Said Kaufman: “If you hear the term ‘Israeli T-shirt shop,’ it’s used in a derogatory way. Well why is it ‘Israeli cosmetic shop?’

Why would it be ‘gay store’ or ‘African American or black store,’ or so forth?”

Kaufman said: “There is some strong emotional language involved, and we should be even-tempered and strategic and careful in how we make new laws, especially ones that we know will have a legal response.”

Wernicoff said: “I can understand how Commissioner Kaufman feels (about anti-Semitism), but that’s not the issue … I’m not antiSemitic, but I am anti-crook.”

The Weekly reached out to Mayor Teri Johnston, who voted “yes” on the ordinance.

She wrote: “This is a very straight-forward issue of unscrupulous business activity occurring in the heart of our commercial and tourism corridor. The negative impact to the surrounding business owners, residents of Key West and our visitors warrants action by the City Commission.”

Kaufman expressed hope that the city attorney’s office is able to answer his legal questions about precedent by the City Commission meeting on Jan. 15, and he expressed continuing hopes that he, Wernicoff, and other members and leaders of Key West’s Jewish community might meet and discuss how to promote peaceful protest and language that reinforces the city’s motto of “One Human Family.” Said Wernicoff: “I sent him a little note the other day and said ‘I’ve thought about our conversation, and I’m ready to have some pizza.’”

HISTORICAL CONTEXT In the book “The Jews of Key West: Smugglers, Cigar Makers and Revolutionaries” by Key West Literary Seminar Director Arlo Haskell, the author cites pillars of the community like Dr. Joseph Porter, whose antiSemitism has been documented as potentially interfering with his efforts to investigate yellow fever. In short, Porter’s journals reveal a focus on tracing the disease to Jewish neighborhoods, ultimately negatively impacting his identification of the connection between the spread of the disease and mosquitos. Haskell also notes that Porter shared racial theories about how these diseases were spread with other health officers. Said Haskell: “There is a long history throughout the world of Jewish business owners being put out of business by non-Jewish majorities.

I am not claiming that is the case here, because I don’t know the protestors or their motivations. But Sam might be viewing this through a historical lens. That’s a context that shouldn’t be ignored.”

avid Wolkowsky, developer, patron of the arts, and “Mr. Key West,” passed away on Sept. 23, 2018. What is left behind in the wake of an extraordinary man? An extraordinary collection of belongings. Susie Puskedra of Susie’s Key West Estate Sales handled the notable sale of Wolkowsky’s belongings, including his paintings, sculptures, books (often signed by prominent authors), even his iconic straw hats. The line was all the way down his Flagler Avenue block on the morning of Friday, Jan. 4, and the sale ran through Sunday, Jan. 6. We caught up with Puskedra and asked her a few questions about this remarkable estate sale.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OR UNUSUAL ITEMS SOLD? There was the large Buddha with the jewels, and the funny thing about that is that David bought that from me at Alan Weimer’s sale, and it actually came from overseas. And now I’ve sold it from David’s house to Queen ML (Mary Lynne Price). Another thing is that the eight-foot tall Napoleon Bonaparte painting— we sold that and the big nude behind it, and the (replica Michelangelo’s) David statue to the folks at Mangoes restaurant, so you’ll see it there. We did have all of the books stamped from David’s library, and many were signed by the authors.

WHAT KIND OF PREPARATION GOES INTO AN ESTATE SALE LIKE MR. WOLKOWSKY’S? We have to catalogue everything.

We go in and clean things and stage things and research and tag everything. For a regular sale, we know all day long what a Barcalounger goes for, but this had such unusual items that we had to do more research in this case. On this one, we advertised nationwide. We have a targeted mailing list with over 1,400 people. We usually have 100 to 125 people in line for a regular sale, and we had over 150 in line for this one when we opened.

On Friday, everything is full price, on Saturday things go for 10 or 15 percent off, and on Sunday everything was half off. And then we pack up and put the things in Salvation Army trucks, clean up and the house is good to go.

(The house is currently on the market.)

We had a horse head on a big table, and the table was made from a base of a piano, and a gentleman bought that who’s redoing a house over on Eaton Street. A neighbor told me that David was in Paris, and he saw the horse head in a window at the Hermes store, and in typical David fashion he walked in and said, “Hi, I want that when you’re done with the display.” A lot of his stuff came from Paris.

I do know that all of the statuary came from Ballast Key and all of the paintings came from the penthouse.

DID MR. WOLKOWSKY ASK YOU TO HANDLE THE SALE PERSONALLY, AND WERE THERE PARTICULAR SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE SALE? We knew that David would be coming to us, though he did not come to me beforehand. And the funny thing was, David was a good customer of mine. I haven’t been here that long—only six years—and I remember a gentleman came to one of my sales and said “David would love this, David would love that,” and I asked my girls: “Who is this David?” And he’d come and sit, and point with his cane and say “Susie dear, how much is this piece?” And I’d say “200 dollars,” and he’d say “I’ll give you 150.” Or I’d say “50 dollars,” and he’d say “How about 20?” And finally we just laughed, and when he’d ask, I’d say “Well how much do you want to pay for it, David?” I’m sure he’s looking down and laughing now, and enjoying the whole experience of people buying his things. And a lot of these things he did buy second-hand.

ANY OTHER TALES OF ESTATE SALES AROUND TOWN? Well, we had a porcelain Saint Bernard at David’s, a figurine, and I found from one of the antique pickers in town that it had been originally bought from Nancy Robinson’s sale, and she sold it to Leda Andrews, and then Leda sold it to David, and then I sold it at David’s sale, so a lot of these things are circulating the island, and I just love that.

KEY WEST THEATER GIVES DANCE KEY WEST NEW HOME

I

n a move that has been almost a year in the making, dancer and choreographer Kyla Piscopink has landed a home for her Dance Key West group at the Key West Theater. The conversations began last February, when then artistic director Juliet Gray approached Piscopink about the unused studio space on the second floor of the theater.

“Things have changed and shifted here and there,” said Piscopink, “And we were developing ideas of what might work and what might benefit everyone.”

The conversation continued with Executive Director Kelly Norman. Said Piscopink, “I proposed some ideas, and they went for it. So it was a year in the making, and now we have this nice partnership. … I think timing is everything.”

Piscopink founded Dance Key West 10 years ago after moving down from New York City (Williamsburg, Brooklyn to be exact). “I got to a point where I needed to take a break, and I thought here, I could I get my head right and take a break,” she laughs, “Okay, work three jobs and take a break — but then I fell in love with my husband.” Now, Kyla has a 3-year-old son, Hendrix, as well as a fulltime job as artistic director of Dance Key West. She said, “I created my own world here with dance. And I still have shows in New York, but Key West is home.”

Over the years, Piscopink has danced and presented work on stages from Lincoln Center to New York Fashion Week.

She has danced in many productions nationally and locally, including with Nut-

cracker Key West and she founded The ReMARCable Dance Project, a program she created with MARC House for adults with developmental disabilities.

While Dance Key West has performed on New York stages as well as at the Coffee Mill and the Dance Factory, Piscopink is thrilled to have a permanent brick and mortar home at Key West Theater.

“This is kind of our inaugural class venture,” she said. “The only classes we’ve been conducting are with MARC and Bahama Village Music Program. These programs taught me the power of dance and of what it means to community. Before, I’ve primarily enjoyed dance in selfish ways: I want to create and express myself.

Through working with MARC and BVMP, It thought: wow, this can do so much more, and it’s been so eye-opening.” She will bring the classes for the Bahama Village Music Program to the Key West Theater, on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m.

Dance Key West is a non-profit, and the focus has shifted somewhat from performance to education. “Probably in the next month or two, we’ll launch Autism Movement Therapy, and it’s a certified program, so we’re working to get our certification,” she said. But the classes don’t only appeal to special groups.

Piscopink said, “These classes are pretty innovative: they’re for all levels, and we want to really extend the reach to the community.” They’ll offer pilates classes, conditioning classes (both that “complement dance well and get you in shape”), a “happy hour” class that combines pilates

and barre, and she’ll add to the schedule as the programming takes shape. Piscopink espouses a desire to “take off the pressure of dance class. It can be intimidating when you see intermediate and advanced ballet. Anybody can dance, and it shouldn’t feel uncomfortable … this is focusing on the joy of movement.”

Classes begin on Monday, Jan. 14 and are open and free to the public through Jan. 17. She wants to “let people come and try it out and shake it up.” As someone who has worked in and out of her field of expertise through her Key West years, Piscopink is on the verge of something special. “I feel like everything I’ve been working on for the last 10 years is about to come to fruition, and to have a home opens it all up.” More information is at www.dancekeywest.org.

wo Conchs Sport Fishing TV show is on the air, broadcast on the Sportsman Channel.

“I was up this morning watching it,” said Capt. Jack Carlson of Two Conchs charter empire. The second episode of the first season is one of his favorites, he said. It features a client who pulled an all-nighter in Key West and then suffered the “ill effects” of a day of strenuous fishing.

“It’s hysterical. That’s the kind of stuff that happens in real life,” Carlson said, laughing. And that’s the premise of Two Conchs Sport Fishing TV show — a REAL day of fishing in the Florida Keys. “This is

not a show where we spend four or five days filming to get the pictureperfect moment. We go out there and we get what we get.”

The show showcases the crew of 10 local captains on 10 boats (all Yellowfins ranging up to 39 feet), including Carlson’s sons Austin, J.C., and Tucker. It also features Marathon prominently.

“I think this benefits all of Marathon. After watching the show, people are definitely going to want to visit and that’s good for everyone,” he said.

Already, Carlson said he’s noticed a buzz. The shirt he wore in the first episode — an OnBoard Bandit — is already selling in the Two Conchs online shop (twoconchsgear.com). And there’s been a slight uptick in bookings.

The show airs on the Sportsman Channel on Tuesday at 5 a.m., Wednesday at 11 a.m., Saturday at 5:30 a.m. and Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

The 10 episodes of Season 1 will run through June before airing on the World Fishing Network from July to December. Carlson said the crew will start shooting Season 2 sometime in June.

orth Roosevelt is bustling with activity and is already bedecked with banners for the upcoming Wounded Warrior Solider Ride event, kicking off Friday Jan. 11.

It appears that the community of Key West has been so supportive that there will be well over 200 banners adorning the route starting near Key Haven, running down North Roosevelt, along White Street as well as on Duval Street.

Its not just the local business and individuals that are showing their support for the 47 Warriors but also the children from Inez Martin, Sigsbee Charter School,The Basilica School of Saint Mary, and Sugarloaf Shores School . The children made well over 100 hand made posters to show their support of our Warriors. Says Sigsbee Principal Eli Jannes:“The Sigsbee community of learners was grateful for the opportunity to support the Wounded Warrior Project. This year, our school has focused on spreading kindness and finding ways to better our community. The students were able to extend their kindness campaign by creating posters for the ride. This is especially meaningful to our students because so many of them are children of military families.”

The ride will commence on the Overseas Highway this weekend.

Organizers encourage locals: “Feel free to wave, your hand or a flag.”

At 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, nearly four dozen combat-wounded veterans will arrive at VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo for a weekend of events that will take them to Key West and back for the Wounded Warrior Bicycle Ride. John Donnelly, a trustee of the VFW post, said he hopes people will come to

the post to see the veterans off, and that those along their route will greet them.

“I’m certain their uplifting thoughts and encouragement will help heal and assist them as they ready themselves for the ride ahead,” Donnelly said.

The 18 women and 29 men will set out from the VFW post, stopping for a water break at Coral Shores High School. The Upper Keys portion of the ride will end at Theatre of the Sea in Islamorada. After a meet and greet at the Marathon Fire Rescue

Station 14, the ride will head over the 7 Mile Bridge and stop at Veterans Memorial Park at the south end of the bridge. On Saturday, Jan. 12, the veterans will ride from the naval air station on Boca Chica Key into Key West for a welcome ceremony and a community ride.

On Sunday, Jan. 13, the veterans will visit the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key, where they will have the chance to swim with the dolphins.

This marks the 14th year the Wounded Warrior ride has been held in the Keys. This year, 47 military veterans from 12 states and the District of Columbia, some just out of the hospital for the first time, will participate. Motorists should take extra time to get to their destination (see schedule).

U.S. 1 will remain open during the ride, but motorists should be patient, use caution and realize there may be rolling lane shifts in traffic.

Motorists are asked to take special notice of the 7 Mile Bridge ride on Friday afternoon and be very careful if crossing the bridge then.

The Community Ride ends at 2 p.m. at the Little White House, 111 Front St. The public can ride with the warriors to historic Key West military sites and bike decorations are encouraged. There is a suggested $20 donation that includes a T-shirt to the first 100 riders registered.

• 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, the warriors visit the Dolphin Research Center, 58901 Grassy Key, to swim with the dolphins. The dolphin swim is “thanks to the generosity of the Charles Evans Foundation,” the dolphin center said in a release. The veterans, along with caregivers and Wounded Warrior Project staff, are expected to arrive at DRC at 9 a.m. The public is invited to arrive, as early as 8:30 a.m., to join DRC staff and volunteers to welcome to the participants. Admission is free for current members; others may pay general admission or become members with their donations when they get to DRC.

he Greater Miami & The Keys Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce the 2019 Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year Award and Gala on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel. The event was established by the Spottswood family of Key West in gratitude of Mrs. Spottswood’s devotion to the principles of the American Red Cross and her determination in bringing the first chapter to the citizens of the Florida Keys in 1917.

This year, Tom Callahan has been named as the 2019 Humanitarian of the Year for his service and dedication to residents of the Keys. Callahan is executive director and a founding board member of the Star of the Sea Outreach Mission (SOS) in Key West. In ten years of service, the Mission has become the largest provider of food for hunger relief and one of the most respected nonprofits in Monroe County, with operations extending from Key Largo to Bahama Village. As executive director, Callahan oversaw the distribution of over two million pounds of food in 2017, and his prowess in fundraising has developed an organization with an annual budget 50 times that of when the doors were first opened in 2006.

“SOS is constantly seeking to improve the most pressing needs for food in our community,” said Callahan. “Through our food pantry, Community Kitchen project and nutrition education programs, we seek to increase the health and wellbeing of low-income individuals and families here in Monroe County.”

n Jan. 8, 1828 the Territory of Florida incorporated the city of Key West. In 1852 in Ohio, Henry Flagler became a partner in D.M. Harkness and Company.

Working as a grain merchant, Flagler met John D. Rockefeller. They became business associates and friends.

Cleveland, Ohio developed into the center of America’s oil refining industry and Flagler’s friend Henry Rockefeller decided to get into the oil game.

Undercapitalized, Rockefeller asked Flagler to go into business with him. Having lost most of his money during the Civil War, one of Henry Flagler’s relatives was persuaded to invest $100,000 with Rockefeller with the understanding that Henry would become a 25

percent partner in the newly formed Rockefeller, Andrews, and Flagler Company. On Jan. 10, 1870 the company organized into the Standard Oil Company.

Forty-two years later Henry Flagler’s train would arrive in Key West and forever alter the history of the Florida Keys.

COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS 2018 ACCOMPLISHMENTS County administrator provides insight for coming year

A

s we welcome 2019, Monroe County government is proud of the work that was done this past year to continue the recovery efforts of Hurricane Irma and to enhance the lives of our citizens, business owners and visitors.

The county continued its efforts to lessen the burden on local taxpayers by securing tens of millions of dollars in federal and state funding for needed programs and projects.

At the federal level, the county secured a $49 million grant from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service to clean up our canals. The project is past the halfway point with nearly 100 of the approved 172 canals cleared. The county also has secured federal funds for coastal and storm risk studies, and we continue to work on getting reimbursed from FEMA for Irma expenses.

At the state level, $5 million was secured for water quality projects, $5 million for land acquisition, $5.9 million for an Emergency Operations Center (with millions more acquired from other non-county sources), $278,000 for the vessel pump out program and $15 million for affordable/workforce housing.

The county has been working with the State Department of Environmental Opportunity to garner $90 million of the Rebuild Florida’s federal funds earmarked for low- and moderateincome households in the Keys that are rebuilding or repairing severely damaged homes caused by Irma – and for housing mitigation programs. The deadline to register is March 23, 2019.

The county and the municipalities overcame challenges with debris removal contractors and oversaw the removal of 2.5 million cubic yards of hurricane debris and more than 20,000 large appliances that was completed

by February. County Public Works employees helped in the effort.

The county will soon construct four “tiny” model homes to show Keys residents affordable alternatives for rebuilding code-compliant residences.

The models will be available to tour later this year after construction is complete.

Monroe County Fire Rescue had a busy year, highlighted by the Big Pine Key brush fire in April that burned 72 acres. Quick response prevented loss of life and limited the structural damage to one home. Fire Rescue also graduated 29 from its first “Hot Shot” class targeted to local residents at its new modern classroom facility at the Fire Training Academy on Grassy Key. The county purchased a third Trauma Star helicopter to provide lifesaving flights to the mainland. In 2018, the program flew a record number of patients while continuing to operate in the black – and while transporting all Monroe County residents with no outof-pocket costs.

Monroe County Emergency Management created a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, which teaches safety, self-sufficiency and coordination in a disaster area.

More than 400 residents completed the course in 2018.

The Key West airport improvement projects continue with a resurfaced runway and tarmac. Key West airport provides direct air service to 10 major cities and is adding Philadelphia in February and New York in March.

On Jan. 7, Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi was nominated by his peers as President of the Florida Association of County Managers.

He is fulfilling the remaining term of Stephanie Kopelousos, who recently took a position as Director of Legislative Affairs for Governor Ron DeSantis. This will be Gastesi’s second time in the position. “The opportunity to work with other county managers and to lead at the statewide level will keep Monroe County in the forefront of everyone’s mind on the larger scale,” he said.

The Florida Association of County Managers provides a forum for county managers to develop professional relationships, discuss current and future issues affecting counties, and provide mentoring opportunities, education, advice and advocacy on statewide issues.

Monroe County has taken a leading role in the regional effort to combat climate change and adapt to rising seas.

The county is in the midst of two pilot projects to build roads designed for sea level rise. The county also completed its last canal restoration demonstration project in Key Largo and implemented a canal skimming program.

The county’s social services, veteran’s affairs and guardian ad litem departments continued efforts to help children, seniors, veterans, homeless and other vulnerable residents in need. The county’s five libraries continue to be hubs of activity, with many programs for all ages to enhance the lives of our residents. The county funds the operations of three animal shelters and helped fund a portion of the new Key West Animal Shelter that will open soon.

The community can be proud of the reopening of Bernstein Park on Stock Island. Other county recreational facilities received facelifts and repair work due to Irma, and some continue to be worked on.

From Ocean Reef to Key West, everyday tasks included providing building permits, enforcing county codes, maintaining county facilities, roads, bridges and its vehicle fleet, overseeing trash collection and recycling, keeping information flowing to the public, and producing and administering a $457-million FY18 budget.

The county has been working on the 2020 Strategic Plan. In 2018, the county held 23 community presentations with 826 residents surveyed and 1,500 people polled on Facebook. The top three priorities included workforce housing, overdevelopment and growth control, and traffic and safety concerns on U.S. 1.

We spent much of 2018 recovering from Irma and rebuilding a better and more resilient paradise community. For 2019, we will continue the progress and work on the community’s priorities to make our island home an even better place to live, work and play.

‘LISTEN IN AWE’ ANGIE APARO PLAYS FIRST FLIGHT

A

ngie Aparo might very well be the greatest vocalist and songwriter you have never heard. He has written songs with or for Miley Cyrus, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (Hill won a Grammy for Aparo’s “Cry”). Aparo has toured with acts such as Matchbox 20 and has sung on tracks with Zac Brown. Yet while existing in a business that often measures success with a commercial yardstick, Aparo’s artistry is pure and independent—even through several musical and physical transformations.

To be fair, in certain circles, Aparo is a legend. And commercial success is something that has not entirely eluded him. In the mid-’90s, when a renaissance of singersongwriters emerged in the South, names like Edwin McCain, Shawn Mullins and Butch Walker (of Marvelous 3) dominated the musical landscape. Yet while Aparo subscribed to their tribe, he was never entirely of their world — as a musician or a songwriter.

During a Keys Weekly interview, Edwin McCain once remarked that Aparo “is simply from another universe. When he plays, we all just stop in the moment and listen in awe.”

This Sunday, local musician Nick Norman and his Big Stage Productions will present Angie Aparo, at First Flight Island Restaurant and Brewery. For Norman, who has said he wants to create “a spiritual atmosphere with a congregational following,” Aparo’s performance could become the staple in Norman’s musical revival series.

“I once heard Angie play a few years back, and I just started crying, “said Norman.

“I don’t know why. It’s just the power this guy has when he starts to sing and play.”

Today, Aparo lives in the moment. Following a severe stroke several years ago, Angie has fought from regaining his voice to recapturing the vocals that can literally make grown men break into tears. This week we caught up with the extraordinary singer songwriter to dig into his upcoming show in Key West, his road to recovery from his stroke, and all things that define (or cannot define) Angie Aparo.

You played Key West many years ago at Irish Kevin’s. Have you been back since?

I haven’t been back since, and I can’t wait to get back down there. I just fell in love with the place on my last trip. I’m a Hemingway freak, and last time, they let me crash at their place in the carriage house. It was an unreal experience.

You will be playing in a smaller courtyard.

Do you prepare differently for something like this, as opposed to a Fox Theater or larger venue?

I sort of apply the Springsteen rule that it’s the same whether it’s 10,000 people or 100.

I try to speak to everyone like it’s just one person and make it immediately intimate in some way. Back when my band was out doing festival stuff, all of those people were having individual experiences to the song. I look at it like they are listening collectively, but it’s personal. So the numbers don’t matter.

For those in Key West who don’t know you, how would you describe your music?

I write with a guitar and a piano. At the end of the day, I’m sort of an Americano, rock, folk-artist who explores and experiments with various rock sounds. I guess Neil Young is a great example of this as well.

So would you say Neil Young is one of your biggest influences?

You have to remember that singer-songwriters are not just songwriters, or just recording artists or just performing artists. Even with all of those art forms and even with the Beatles, Elton John and bands like Queen, I think the one that stretches the widest for me is Bowie. He is the one who found all of those sonic worlds, where it could be him and a guitar, or he had a saxophone or some crazy New Age sound or soul music. So anytime I was trying to dig into something different, you could almost always go to Bowie and listen to unbelievable and inventive formats.

Is this because Bowie was not just a great performer, but wrote and performed just as you do?

People forget that Bowie and a handful of others like Prince are singer-songwriters.

You never think of them as songwriters.

They are not bands but it’s interesting when you cast that image on them. You look at someone like Bowie or Peter Gabriel and you just remind yourself they are singersongwriters. They do it all. They are still songwriters, but they can do all of these other things and explore and be free. My mother is prose writer, and she says it’s great when you realize that about another artist because they give you permission. I use that a lot because someone like Brian Wilson can get crazy, and I remind myself I can do the same.

“I AM A JEWISH BUDDHIST WHO LOVES JESUS.” Edwin McCain once said you are one of the best singer songwriters he has ever witnessed. What do you say to something like that?

Wow. I just kind of blush. Edwin has been so supportive of me. In a weird way, that is what he is to me. What do they call it? The mutual admiration society (laughing)? But that means a ton to me.

I’ve always sort of been in this spiritual space in my life. My favorite quote that defines me is, “I’m a Jewish Buddhist who loves Jesus.” But when something like that happens it’s like ‘oh shit.’ It’s a heavier space.

I realized nothing is that important any more. It’s not that it changes the way you write, you just don’t care about writing any more. All of these things you thought identified you and you suddenly realize they are not at the soul of yourself and the things that are important come to a whole new surface. I still love to write and love what I do. But I have a friend going through breast cancer and she says the same thing. All of these other things in life just don’t matter any more. There is nothing to worry about.

So what are you working on today?

When the stroke hit, I had a ton going on. I had an augmented realty app that should be completed by March.

I also had a Netflix show in the works with Tim McGraw called American B-Side before everything fell apart. I mean, I couldn’t even talk for a while. But I just started listening to lot of Bowie and Queen and I got back and finished this record. By the way, have you seen the new Queen movie?

I have not. I’m going tonight.

It’s not a movie about Queen. It’s about Mary. It’s a love story. In fact, it’s one of the greatest love stories ever told.

here’s a story teller in 2019.

Brendan Nolan and his friend Colin Farrell are coming to play music. And the Drake Irish Dancers are new to the Florida Keys Celtic Festival, too, for the event that takes place Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13 at Marathon Community Park.

“I always say this is going to be the best year ever,” said Rev. Debra Andrew Maconaughey of St. Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon. The church is the host of the annual festival, now in its sixth year, and the proceeds fund its good works. “We’re just excited that we have all the bands coming down, some new dancers, and new additions to our village that we are unveiling.”

Theo Derleth, who helps publicize the festival, is no less proud.

“This festival is turning out to be one of the premier festivals of the Florida Keys and one of the most family-friendly — there’s something for all ages,” he said.

Albannach, the Screaming Orphans, West of Galway and the aforementioned Nolan and Farrell play multiple times a day on both Saturday and Sunday. It’s top-notch music entertainment by any measure, but the gold standard of Celtic music. There’s also the highland games — incredibly muscled men and women performing feats of strength and skill such as the caber toss, which is actually throwing around a … wait for it … telephone pole. The whole crowd stops to watch and listen when the Police Pipe & Drum Corps of Florida march the festival grounds.

And, then, there’s those sheep herding dogs, though, truth be told, Keys natives are usually more fascinated by those strange sheep.

“Festival goers love the tea tent,” said Derleth. “It’s one of people’s favorites, and the pub food is amazing too.”

Proceeds from the festival support St. Columba’s Hammock House. It offers free after-school transportation, homework help and snacks during the school year. On school holidays, it offers camps. Maconaughey said the Hammock House has recently added some enrichment programs.

“We have ukulele lessons, gymnastics and art classes and we’ve just started a Yale University curriculum called Mutt-i-grees that teaches the kids social skills,” she said.

Maconaughey heaps praise on the festival volunteers’ heads. “Last year it was sad; so many of our regular volunteers couldn’t come because homes were still damaged. So in 2019, it’s like a reunion. We’re so happy to see them again.”

Admission is $10 per day. The festival runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13.

on’t let her size fool you: Michelle Spottswood is a force. The fitness guru and mother of three, married to a seventhgeneration Conch, Spottswood is now a Key West businesswoman with FYT - Find Your Tribe, a gym for just about everybody.

From Clearwater originally, Spottswood got her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida, where she met her husband, local Billy Spottswood. They moved back to Key West in 2014 and while raising kids, Spottswood said, “Eating and living healthy gives me the energy to survive being a mom of three.”

Taking her love of yoga and fitness to the next level, Spottswood and sister-in-law Jessica, just opened FYT, offering yoga, free weights and circuit studio with 50 types of classes.

There are showers, lockers and a lounge, but the best amenity is the child care. Spottswood knows how hard it is to find time to “do it all,” and she wants to help parents. And after? There is some vino on hand to reward a good workout — Spottswood is nothing if not a good host for her tribe.

Why the name FYT - Find Your Tribe? While going through the naming process, we were looking for something that embodied the culture we wanted to create. One day, we came across an article about “finding your tribe.” The article had a quote: “Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family.

Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.” We both got goosebumps and didn’t have to say a word. We became FYT. You have wine for sale at the gym (brilliant) — can you explain how that came about? FYT is all

about finding balance. We wanted to create a space where people could work out, hang out, be social, and find balance in their hectic lives. A little wine here and there can really help out with finding balance.

Owning your own business, having a husband and children - what’s your secret? (FYT is the first gym in Key West to offer child care, hooray!) Lots of yoga, and lots of support from my friends and family who are constantly jumping in to help out. It really takes a village ... a very big village.

ow that winter has shown itself here in the Keys it’s time to take advantage of what the cooler waters have to offer. Two areas have really come to life with the change of seasons. Mangrove snappers and sea trout will show up in your chum slick. Tip the jig with half a piece of fresh shrimp and chuck it out into your slick and work it back to the boat in a slow erratic manner.

If there is a fish out there you’ll know it quickly; it may take 15 minutes or so before the action gets cranking and once it does you will stay busy until the tide or the chum runs out. Keep a 15-pound spin set ready with a 50-pound leader and a 3/0 hook or similar jig ready for a pinkish or bigger shrimp to pitch to a big cobia that will sooner or later swim past your boat during all this activity. You will have large king macks show up and assorted sharks crash your party as well, so be prepared. If you like tripletail like most anglers do, you need to run the trap lines for a few miles time to time and it should pay off.

Patch reef fishing on the Atlantic side of the Keys is a good bet too, and really all you need is a rock pile, reef or ledge to anchor up current of and repeat what you’d do on the Gulf side.

There are acres and acres of hard bottom out there that has boulders, cracks, grass patches and scattered sponges and sea fans that will hold good life too.

The variety of fish is huge and you just might get mugged by a pack of sailfish, cobia and mahi as you chum for snappers and such on the patches offshore.

As usual know the areas you can fish and the areas that are Sanctuary Protection Areas where fishing is not allowed and know your limits. Use MyFWC. com on your phone for seasons and limits on the fish you plan on harvesting throughout your day. Now that you are here for the winter months, also make sure all your safety gear is in date and your fire extinguishers are operational and that you have PFDs and a throwable flotation device on board for a safe day on the water.

‘NEW EROTICA’ BRINGS DEADPAN WIT, SARCASM

orry boys, this one is for the girls. Whether a zygote or Betty White, any woman can relate to the latest literary buzz, “New Erotica For Feminists: Satirical Fantasies of Love, Lust, & Equal Pay,” written by four women comedians: Caitlin Kunkel, Brooke Preston, Fiona Taylor and Carrie Wittmer. Coming to Books & Books at the Studios of Key West on Saturday, Jan. 19, author Caitlin Kunkel will be turning us on by talking about everything a woman wants … and it has nothing to do with Spanx, calorie-free wine or Brad Pitt.

From Mary Poppins to Ann Coulter, women of all types can relate to these humorous vignettes, written with deadpan wit and wellearned sarcasm. The writers tackle relationships, careers, parenthood and even literary legends such as “Romeo and Juliet” (hint: Juliet finally sees it as a toxic relationship).

Their point? Flip the switch on stereotypes and humorously call out well-worn scenarios for women. To wit: “He calls me into his office and closes the door … to promote me.

He promotes me again and again. I am wild with ecstasy.”

“We had an all-female team that gave us confidence,” said author Kunkel. “It became funny and depressing how universal these stories are.” The authors pooled together ideas and looked to actual erotica for terms and verbiage.

Then they came to an agreement on things that made them mad and what made them think about women’s roles in society. No story

was written by a single author, but shared and edited together. “We needed to get away from angry satire and lighten up a little,” said Kunkel.

“New Erotica” provides an updated version of the Adam and Eve myth (“She decided to do some follow-up research on her own rather than trust a f*#*ing talking snake”) and comments on pop culture without discrepancy (of course Benedict Cumberbatch should be a safe word!) but Harry Potter didn’t make the cut. It’s a #metoo lollipop that goes down with delight. There’s no subversive bitterness, just a wink and jab at how women can alternately be viewed, for example.

“I just read a science fiction novel with zero violence against women to motivate the male protagonist.”

Boom.

Incredibly short and to the point, “New Erotica” masters comedic timing and multiple mic drops.

This little novella is the perfect addition to the bathroom, placed perfectly so it would delight some and, perhaps, educate a few more.

BLOOD MOON RISING HERE COMES THE GREAT AMERICAN (LUNAR) ECLIPSE

F

rom Sunday evening to Monday morning, Jan. 20-21, the entire U.S. will be treated to a total lunar eclipse — what the media likes to call a “Blood Moon” eclipse. At 9:36 p.m., the moon will sweep into the Earth’s penumbra, or outer shadow, causing our nearest neighbor in space to darken gradually. Don’t expect to see any changes in the moon’s appearance right away, though — it takes about 20 minutes or so until keen-eyed observers will begin to notice slight shading on the eastern (left) limb.

Roughly an hour later, the moon will encounter the Earth’s darker, inner shadow called the umbra, which will visibly reduce the once-bright full moon to a thin crescent and then ultimately to an eerie ruby-colored orb at the total phase, as red light refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere falls onto Luna’s surface. Totality begins at 11:42 p.m. and lasts for just over an hour. I always find it eerie at totality to see both a blood-red moon hanging in a darkened sky, and also how dark the landscape becomes after having been bathed in bright moonlight earlier that evening. At 12:44 a.m. totality comes to an end, and the eclipse phases now reverse themselves until the entire eclipse comes to an end at 2:49 a.m. local time. Being that dawn brings a workday, I can safely say I will not be sticking around to see the final stages of this eclipse!

I’m calling this the Greater American Eclipse because many more people across the country, including right here in the Keys, will view this totality compared to the Great American Total Solar Eclipse that the U.S. experienced back in 2017. Of course, a total lunar eclipse has none of the drama of a total solar eclipse, but still is a very beautiful sight to behold, as the normally bright full moon first “shrinks” then dramatically changes color. I always find it fascinating to see how many more stars become visible as the moon’s brightness dwindles and the sky darkens to reveal it amid the constellation in which it happens to be temporarily residing (in this case, Gemini heading into Cancer).

As you sit outside with drink in hand watching this spectacle, notice that the edge of the Earth’s umbra is round. This was an important discovery to ancient astronomers, as they made the connection that a round Earth would produce a round shadow— voila! But somewhere between then and Columbus’ time, this knowledge was lost, and it took some intrepid explorers travers-

ing oceans without falling off a flat Earth to confirm what the ancients had already known.

After your second drink, you may wonder why we don’t see a lunar eclipse at every full moon. The answer is a simple one—the moon orbits the Earth at an inclination of 5 degrees, so its orbit takes it north or south of the Earth’s shadow most months when it’s full. Only when the sun, earth and moon appear to make a straight line in space do eclipses occur, as one does this month.

Even though we now know what causes eclipses, they are still a surreal sight in the sky. Imagine, then, the fear they caused in former times, when most people had no idea what was causing their familiar full moon to unexpectedly shrink, darken, then redden without warning. Columbus used a lunar eclipse to his advantage when faced with almost certain death. On his fourth and final voyage to the New World, his ships were in bad shape from wood worms and weather, and he and his crew were almost out of provisions and were receiving no further help from the Native Americans, who already had deemed their guests outstayed their welcome. Thinking of how to save himself and his men, it dawned on him that there would be a total lunar eclipse taking place in a few days’ time, and he realized he could manipulate this celestial event to potentially save all their lives.

Armed with this advance knowledge, he told the leader his god was angry that they were receiving no assistance from the locals, and that as a sign of his god’s displeasure, the moon would be removed from the sky. Once the eclipse began, the leader and his people began to react in fear, eventually agreeing to help the Columbus party. Upon hearing this, the admiral retired to his cabin and “pleaded” with his god to restore the moon to the sky, which of course, happened, pleasing the local people and ensuring the survival of Columbus and his crew.

How might have history been written had the eclipse not happened when it did?

One last note: total lunar eclipses are notoriously unpredictable in their appearance, which can range from very bright to dark reddish to almost invisible, mostly due to the amount of particulates in the Earth’s atmosphere, which can absorb the red light that would normally fall on the moon during totality (I’m predicting a fairly bright eclipse, since the moon won’t travel too deeply into the Earth’s umbra). But of course, none of this means anything if we get an overcast sky on eclipse night, so let’s hope for clear weather. Happy viewing!

What is something most people don’t know about you? My first name is Liam, but everybody calls me by my middle name: Kingston. I think people often scratch their heads when they hear me called “Liam.”

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Mrs. Ford. Every morning for the two years I had her, she was the brightest and most energetic person of my day and really helped show me that learning doesn’t need to be a chore — it can be exciting.

What does a “good education” mean to you? A good education for me is not just a diploma. A good education is having phenomenal teachers that teach you not just about a subject matter, but how to think for yourself.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? All the people that called you short would eventually need a ladder to stay at eye level with you.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you? Cross country— it’s impossible to describe how running changed my life; cross country and track allow me to push myself and constantly strive to be a better person and athlete every day. I’m also in Mu Alpha Theta, Academic Challenge, NHS, and Interact.

What are your plans after high school?

Get an education, make new connections, discover exactly what I’m passionate about and explore the world.

What do you hope to be remembered for at KWHS? I hope to be remembered as a kind, hard-working person who inspired others to do their best.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? PC gaming has always had a soft spot in my heart.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Without a doubt, no.

Besides the fact that I don’t want to live on an island my entire life, I don’t expect it to be too long before South Florida is under water.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Find a fulfilling career path; become heavily educated; make several smart investments.
