ocals, especially those in the tourism industry, call it “Hell Week” — the seven days between Christmas and New Year’s. It is, by far, the busiest week of the year. Traffic seen on U.S. 1 during that time period says it all.

From hoteliers and retailers to restaurateurs, those in the service industry welcome Hell Week, but it can be jarring all the same for its “zero to 60 mph” acceleration.

“Historically, that is our busiest time between Christmas and New Year’s,” said Judy Hull, Islamorada Chamber of Commerce executive director.

“The way it fell with Christmas Eve on Monday and Christmas on Tuesday, people came a little earlier and stayed for the weekend after.”

During the week in between the holidays, Hull said hotels were full, shops were busy and many merchants extended their hours.

“A lot of businesses stayed open on New Year’s because the tourists are here,” she said. “They want to be open when they’re here.”

Elizabeth Moscynski, Key Largo Chamber of Commerce president, said the week between Christmas and New Year’s brought a noticeable increase in visitor traffic to the center and area.

“During the beginning of the month it was a little slower,” she said. “The closer we got to the holidays the more visitors we saw coming in.”

Moscynski said most if not all hotels in Key Largo were sold out. Most places were full all the way through Wednesday as visitors began to hit the road. In addition, she said, rates were some of the highest the area’s seen this year.

“With it being holiday week, for smaller mom and pop establishments, rates were as high as

$190,” she said. “Some of the upscale hotels were as high as $700.”

Kelli Fountain of the Tourist Development Council pulled some hotel room occupancy statistics from 2015 and 2016 to help explain the jump in business. The data compares Memorial Day Weekend with the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

According to data collected at the end of 2015 and 2016, Hell Week typically sees an average 95 percent hotel room occupancy rate, when averaged over seven days. (Numbers are not yet available for the end of 2018, and those from 2017 are excluded because of Hurricane Irma).

President’s Day weekend, Fourth of July week, and Easter Week occupancy numbers are about 93 percent Keyswide. Memorial Day weekend is at 94 percent occupancy.

“Memorial Weekend has very high occupancies as well. The difference is that those occupancies are typically only for two or three days. During New Year’s, the lengths of stay are longer and the average daily rates are higher,” Fountain said.

Cailin Reckwerdt, general manager at Robbies Marina, said they were quite busy during the Christmas and New Year’s break. She said a lot of families were down having fun and spending money.

“We have had approximately 2,500 customers daily on our property between all activities we offer,” she said. “We were slammed busy nonstop.”

he first month of the year has seen significant events in the Keys.

John D. Pennekamp was born on Jan. 1, 1897.

On the same date in 1966, the 122foot two-masted steel schooner Mandalay struck Long Reef. The schooner had been purchased by Windjammer Cruises and refitted with mahogany, brass, ivory, and teak. The ship became part of Windjammer’s Barefoot Charter fleet. The Mandalay had been returning from a 10-day trip to the Bahamas with 23 vacationers and 12 crew members on board. Encountering high winds and 10-foot waves, the ship ran afoul of the coral reef. The Coast Guard rescued the passengers and crew, all of whom were forced to leave their belongings behind. By the time salvage tugs arrived on the scene to try and dislodge the vessel, it had been virtually picked clean by passing boaters.

On Jan. 5, 1953, Art McKee, the father of modern treasure hunting, signed a contract with local contractor Alonzo Cothron to construct a museum equipped with its own treasure vault to hold valuables salvaged from the 1733 treasure fleet. That building is now home to the Treasure Village Montessori School.

‘29 Points of Interest’ historical trolley tours start Jan. 5 The “29 Points of Interest” Historical Trolley Tours will start on Saturday, Jan. 5, with the first tour at 10 a.m. at Islamorada Moose Lodge, 81573 Old Highway.

A monitor is located at the front of the trolley showing historical photos of sites as the trolley passes them.

Tours take about one hour and reservations are recommended. Admission for adults is $15; for children 6 and under, free.

A tent staffed by volunteers will provide information, ticket sales, books, T-shirts, historic photographs and memorabilia for sale.

Veterinary hospital sets spay and neuter clinic Upper Keys Veterinary Hospital is conducting a spay and neuter clinic on Sunday, Jan. 6, by appointment only, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The clinic is to benefit Marrvelous Pet Rescues. The cost is $50. Animals must have proof of rabies vaccine or will be required to get one at the clinic. Other services available during the clinic are deworming for $5; rabies vacciine, $10; and microchipping for $25. The hospital is at 87801 Overseas Hwy. Boat show set at Hawks Cay A boat show this weekend will benefit Island Christian School.

The show at Hawks Cay Resort and Marina on Duck Key will feature boats, an auction, food and a variety of vendors, as well as fishing seminars by local captains. Admission is $10. The event runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Art Guild sets January meeting The Art Guild of the Purple Isles will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Elks Club in Tavernier. Social time is at 9:30 a.m.; the meeting begins at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Because of the holiday season, this is a week later than the guild’s usual meeting time of the first Wednesday of the month.

Positive Step Monroe County, a non-profit organization serving Monroe County’s highest risk kids and their families since 1999, has started the Southernmost Fatherhood Initiative, providing free parenting skill coaching for fathers who are 18 to 30 years old. The program consists of 12 two-hour sessions and is available throughout the Keys.

According to APSMC founder Billy Davis, the curriculum helps dads develop new skills in parent, co-parent and child relationships, anger management, health, and substance abuse awareness among other topics. It has been developed for closed groups of six to 10 dads, and has been tested and validated through educational and social service organizations.

One group has already launched in Key West, and more will be added, said Davis. “The whole idea is to break the cycle of absentee dads,” he said, “and this is partly accomplished through teaching parenting skills to men who might not have had a role model — or a good role model.”

In addition to parenting-skill building, the program has been designed to offer crucial support in the form of introduction to 12-step programs if needed, GED referrals, OSHA training, job coaching, construction job referrals, and case management. “We are also providing pre- and post-program testing, so that dads can evaluate their progress from start to finish,” he said.

A similar program is available to dads who are in detention situations.

I had the basic materials — a Pinterest account and a vintage Vita Mixer 4000. After about seven minutes of research into when this blender debuted and no clear answer, I’ll just give it my best guess: based on the styling, either the ’50 or ’60s. It weighs as much as a Smart car and when you flip it into reverse, a blue spark – not unlike the one that appeared over New York City on Dec. 28 – shoots out of the bottom.

I started by learning to WEAR the smoothies. I wish I had a cut reel of the first week. On Monday, like a newbie, I started the smoothie after I was already dressed for work. Of course, I was immediately “painted” in green goo. By Wednesday, I was smart enough to start while in my pajamas.

On Friday, I was naked. My husband would hide around the corner waiting for the inevitable smoothie explosion and then cackle like a maniac.

Jerk. While the Vita Mixer 4000 is a fabulous machine, the ancient seals have crumbled and the operation, I’ve learned, requires paper towels, paper plates, goggles and an outfit that is easy to wash, like a birthday suit.

The next thing I discovered is that I do not have the patience or the time to make a fresh smoothie every morning. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

So I bought these adorable little blue mason jars at Publix that fit a pint, or 16 ounces. I make three or four at a time and stash them in the back of the refrigerator.

The rub? The recipe. I started with pineapple, kale, coconut water. Good.

But was it good enough? I mean, really, I am trying to be healthy here. Then I added soaked chia seeds. Still good. A bit of fresh ginger? Sure, but you gotta cut that up fine or find a wider straw.

Then an extra apple and one cucumber … good but definite bloating. I consulted with my smoothie dealer who suggested a bit of fat, like coconut oil.

But then I went off my head, as the Brits say, and added lime juice.

Boy, was that bad — clear-the-roomwith-the-smell-alone, lip-puckering, butt-clenching BAD. Obviously, there was some type of chemical reaction on par with garage laboratory results in a Looney Tunes cartoon. I poured eight beautiful smoothies into the crab hole in my yard and nursed a broken heart for about a week before I started again.

I humbly submit to you that I am a work in progress when it comes to smoothie making. I welcome our readers’ constructive criticism and bullet-proof recipes. I will also need an apron embroidered with “K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid)” or a little kitty hanging by a bitty claw that says “Hang In There, Baby” or some equally inspiring quote that will keep things running smoothie-ly.

INGREDIENTS: 2 tsp of peanut butter (organic crunch) 4 bananas ½ handle of Tito’s vodka (recommended but not necessary) 2 bags frozen blueberries 3 scoops of Captain Crunch Berry cereal 4 scoops whole protein 1 cup almond milk (unsweetened) 3 cups ice 4 dashes of Tabasco (or Texas Pete) DIRECTIONS Shake well. Let sit in 42-degree temp for 8 minutes.

Pour into obnoxious workout Thermos. Enjoy.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA Lecture delves into benefits, how to obtain card

nside the Holiday Inn Key Largo, community members packed the conference room on Dec. 5 to get insight into medical marijuana.

The speaker was Dr. Gregory Sonn, who legally prescribes and recommends legal forms of cannabinoids to patients. Sonn has over 5,000 patients certified for medical marijuana.

Since 2008, Dr. Sonn has worked with Hope Healthcare Services in Fort Myers. After more than a decade of caring for patients who suffered from chronic diseases, Dr. Sonn realized that traditional medical practice (using only traditional medicines and therapies) would not be sufficient for his own health and well-being.

THE STRAINS Sonn noted three strains of marijuana that are of value: sativa, indica and hybrids. “Sativas are a bit more stimulating.

They’re tall, thin, Mediterranean, very pyscholactive, meaning the side effect profile is really beneficial for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) folks.”

As for indica, which is the

female strain of marijuana, Sonn said it has short broad base leaves and is body heavy. “She’s good for pain. She’s good for sleep time,” he said.

Hybrids are simply combinations of indica and sativa, according to Sonn.

“Things to pay attention to is if it’s indica or sativa dominant,” he said.

“Everybody’s different and you have it out in a way,” he said. “Indica is good for sleep, spasms, pain, anxiety and nausea. Sativa is a bit more energizing and stimulating.”

EXTRACTION Sonn said nurseries grow plants from sprouts and clones so they’re identical.

“There’s a vegetative state. They give it 24 hours of sunshine,” he said.

“Once that reaches the state to flower, they change the light cycles. They force these beautiful plants to grow exponentially fast. Some move plants every day to make them bud and flower.”

Once plants bud and flower,

they’re cut and brought to a harvest area and dried to 10 percent or less humidity. It’s then ground up and put into a pot with high pressure and low temperature. CO2, a gas, turns into a liquid. They pass liquid through the flower. As it warms back, this process is called superconduction; CBD drops out at its molecular weight and THC drops out at its molecular weight.

“They collect it into their own bottles. Then they put it back together in some ratio for consumption,” he said.

TREATING SERIOUS ISSUES Sonn spent 18 years in end-of-life care. And for cancer treatment, Sonn said, he gets a lot of referrals from oncologists.

“They are all seeing the benefits,” he said. “You go see a cancer doctor.

He puts you on some poison. That kills cells good and bad. That’s your standard of care. If you add CBD to that standard of care, to the tune of 300

mg a day, which turns out to be $900 a month, they are showing amazing results. I wouldn’t even say this unless I was incredibly impressed with the data.”

As for treating stroke, Sonn noted that early indications show outcomes for people who were having an acute cerebralvascular event were better when using CBD. “The functional outcome, that’s really all that matters,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how much of your brain died; it matters how much you got back at the end of this event.”

BETTER TO VAPE THAN BURN For medicinal purposes, Sonn noted that it’s better to vape than burn.

“The problem with burning it is you don’t have a really good amount,” Sonn said. “It’s not really good medicine. If you are a new person, it’s hard to say put a small bud in a joint and smoke it and you’ll receive this much medicine.

Improvements of vaporization are significant.”

MEDICAL MARIJUANA CARD Obtaining a medical marijuana script isn’t complicated, Sonn said. First, people need to see a doctor who certifies the patient. Once patients get a diagnosis deemed acceptable, they apply to the Florida Department of Health.

“Once you apply to DOH, the doctor does qualifications and DOH does bookkeeping. Once the doctor says you’re good, then you send an application to DOH for them to put rubber stamp on it. That rubber stamp costs $75 a year. If you want to be a caregiver, that’s $75 for you and the patient.”

Sonn said it takes anywhere from two weeks to 30 days to get the card. On average, cards are in patients’ hands in 20 days.

“Patients submit to DOH. Twenty days they give you another email saying ‘congrats you’re approved.’ In there, I write prescriptions. It’s electronic. It takes about three weeks. Then call a dispensary. I approve all forms, meaning you get topical, inhalation products, oral products or CBD, which I always recommend for everybody.”

hirty-three states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico have approved comprehensive public medical marijuana/cannabis programs.

The National Conference of State Legislatures characterizes Florida’s medical marijuana program as “comprehensive,” meaning there’s protection from criminal penalties for using marijuana for a medical purpose and there’s access to marijuana through dispensaries or some other system that is likely to be implemented. Also, the program allows a variety of strains, including those more than “low-THC,” and it allows either smoking or vaporization of some kind of marijuana products, plant material or extract.

Medical marijuana and low-THC cannabis are available in Florida. Per the state health department, medical marijuana is distinct from low-THC cannabis in that it can contain significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the chemical compound that causes the “high” commonly associated with cannabis. Unlike low-THC cannabis, the consumption of medical marijuana can lead to potent psychoactive effects in patients.

As to who qualifies, the health department says qualifying conditions include cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those above a terminal condition diagnosed by a physician or a chronic nonmalignant pain caused by a qualifying medical condition.

n audience member began the questioning: “You have such a long name, what should we call you?” Without missing a beat, the newly elected congresswoman says, “Debbie.”

Engaging and full of humor, Florida’s new 26th congressional district’s representative entranced a large audience of Keys residents on Dec. 15 for “Coffee with Debbie” at The Blue Room in Key West. She conveyed her gratitude to voters and assured her intent at transparency as a new member of the U.S. House.

Beating out Republican Carlos Curbelo was no easy feat, but Mucarsel-Powell hasn’t slowed down and assured the

audience of her enthusiasm for joining Congress. Before being sworn in on Jan. 3, 2019, Mucarsel-Powell has already exchanged her heels for stylish but sensible boots and has been busy pounding the congressional pavement.

“The day of the election I wanted to connect with you, and say thank you.

Key West has always had my back, and your energy and passion put me over the edge,” said Mucarsel-Powell.

Before taking questions, MucarselPowell said she has joined one of the strongest, most diverse freshman classes ever in Congress and looks forward to the diversity of bringing new perspectives to government. With such a large group of new representatives, she feels they will hold a lot of leverage. Already she has been in meetings with fellow congresswomen and said, “I have met with and established a good relationship with Nancy Pelosi; she knows our needs.”

Mucarsel-Powell is getting involved in committees such as Transportation and Infrastructure, where she sees the needs of our district best being met, especially considering our particular environmental concerns. She will be joining the newly formed House Select Committee on Climate Change as well. Mucarsel-Powell says she is ready to start learning and establishing relationships with key people and “bringing progress to this district.”

Her goal will be to reach across the aisle to Republicans, and she admits she will make compromises if it means getting things done. After being sworn in, Mucarsel-Powell will be voting on issues the very same day. But aside from her three weeks on the Hill a month, she will have an office at The Gato building in Key West. “My office is open any time; no one needs an appointment here or in D.C. I want to be a resource for you.”

ON IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: “I will not be a part of the House Intelligence Committee or the Judicial Committee, but I will be very interested to see where Mueller’s investigation goes. We should be seeing results fairly quickly after Jan. 3. But everyone agrees the only way to move forward is with bipartisan support.

Both sides have to have enough evidence and that requires the Republicans to be on board.

We’ll see. We have entered a constitutional crisis.

But my concern is how do we go about impeachment without dividing our country even further?”

ON IMMIGRATION/ICE: “It hits me personally. I am very disturbed by the seven-year-old girl that just died in immigration custody. Right now I am not allowed, but I plan on visiting the Homestead detention center as soon as I am sworn in. I need to investigate ICE’s power and their abuse, which is being directed by top officials. It’s a very serious issue. Even now, I am looking into a different case in Monroe County with the help of Commissioner Heather Carruthers. We have to look at these cruel and inhumane policies.”

ON GUN VIOLENCE: “I have already joined the gun violence task force, but I don’t think it’s aggressive enough. I hope to pass gun reform in the first 100 days; going after military-style weapons and enforcing stronger background checks is a priority.”

ON HEALTH CARE: “I will first be looking into reducing the cost of prescription medication and the corruption in politics of health care.”

“It’s disturbing that Republicans haven’t stopped their attack on health care. (Regarding a ruling in Texas declaring the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional) we are going to take action and look into countering that lawsuit.”

ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: “My focus right now will be to finish the Everglades restoration. Also, greenhouse emissions is a big task to try and reduce by 2030. For us, I think if we invest in green energy, bring it to our district, it will help boost the economy.”

ON AMENDMENT 4 IN FLORIDA: “Governor-elect Ron DeSantis has no power to overturn Amendment 4. Everyone can register to vote Jan. 8.” DeSantis has tried to delay Amendment 4 from going into effect, allowing ex-felons to register to vote. It was approved by 60 percent of voters and goes into effect Jan. 8, 2019.
