According to data collected at the end of 2015 and 2016, Hell Week typically sees an average 95 percent hotel room occupancy rate, when averaged over seven days. (Numbers are not yet available for the end of 2018, and those from 2017 are excluded from this article because of Hurricane Irma).

“Memorial Weekend and Presidents Day weekend have very high occupancies as well. The difference is that those occupancies are typically only for two or three days. During New Year’s, the lengths of stay are longer and the average daily rates are higher,” Fountain said.

Hoteliers, retailers and restaurateurs welcome Hell Week. It’s profitable. But jarring all the same, for its “zero to 60 mph” acceleration.

“What tourists assume is that it’s like this (Hell Week) all the time. No, no, no,” said John Mirabella of Castaway Waterfront Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Marathon. “August and September are slow. And the first three weeks of December are also slow. We don’t build up to this gradually.”

Restaurants, Mirabella said, are especially challenged when it comes to staffing, especially post-Irma. He said he’s about 15 bodies short of a full staff. In any year, however, new hires must contend with a sudden, brutal uptick in business.

“The flood gate opens, and it begins,” Mirabella said. He said in two days over Hell Week, the restaurant served 1,000 — the equivalent of a week’s work just a few days prior.

Marc Anderson counts himself among the fortunate. Bayshore Clothing in Marathon is a family-owned boutique featuring clothing, jewelry and more.

“We have ‘heirloom’ employees,” Anderson said, “with very little turnover.” He said the level of customer service remains the same and business in 2019 is set to surpass 2016. “The bell has been ringing like crazy,” he said.

Because Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key is a privately held company, Sheldon Suga can’t divulge its occupancy numbers.

“I can say this — we’re packed.

We’re serving 1,500 guests right now,” said Suga, Hawks Cay Resort vice president and managing director.

The resort fully reopened just four months ago after renovations, in part due to Hurricane Irma.

“We’ve received very positive comments from our guests. It’s going to be a good year,” Suga said.

President’s Day weekend, Fourth of July week, and Easter Week occupancy numbers are about 93 percent Keyswide. Memorial Day weekend is at 94 percent occupancy.

“I think we are having a better year,” Mirabella said. “I like to think people are coming back because they think we are being better.”

MORE TIME TO REGISTER Rebuild Florida extends deadline

R

ebuild Florida, a federally funded program implemented by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), has extended its deadline to register to March 29.

In the first phase, $50 million is earmarked for Monroe County homeowners to rebuild, repair and elevate their homes due to damage or destruction caused by Hurricane Irma.

This funding is a grant, not a loan.

More than 950 households have registered for the assistance in Monroe County. And, more than a third of those households already have met the priority applicant threshold and have been issued applications to move forward in the process, according to DEO. In Monroe County, 1,179 homes were destroyed throughout the Florida Keys, with another 2,977 suffering major damage from Hurricane Irma, according to the Approximate Damage Assessment report.

To be eligible for the Rebuild Florida Housing Repair and Replacement Program, homes must have suffered damage from Hurricane Irma. The program is for households in the low- and moderate-income levels. For example, the income limit for a household of four people is $105,840. More Monroe County income ranges are at www. monroecounty-fl.gov/rebuildflorida.

However, priority will be given to the most vulnerable households with seniors age 62 and up, with children under the age of 18, those with special needs or special accommodation requirements (including disability), and persons displaced from Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands who are permanently resettling in Florida.

n New Year’s Eve, the final papers were signed to transfer ownership of Christie’s American Caribbean Real Estate offices in Marathon and the Lower Keys to Berkshire HomeServices Knight & Gardner Realty of Key West.

“I spoke to many suitors,” said ACRE’s Ginger Henderson. “For me, (this) was the obvious choice. I am very excited about the sale. Our team will now be able to provide unmatched exposure for our sellers through Berkshire Hathaway branding and the advanced technology available to us as agents will enable us to provide unmatched service to our buyers as well.”

Henderson, 35-year owner of American Caribbean Real Estate, will remain with BHHS Keys Real Estate as an agent and mentor to the group.

Marathon professional Leslie Christensen purchased the vacation rental side of the business, now called American Coastal Vacation Rentals, and will work alongside the agents and Langley. The business will manage a current inventory of about 100 homes.

“I’ve worked with Ginger for fourteen years, and this has always been my goal — to take over the rental division,” Christensen said. “It will be a good flow, back and forth in the same building. Will (Langley) will be doing all the sales, and I’ll be doing all the rentals. It will be a nice refresher for our office — two young, energetic people taking charge.

“The only reason this dream is even a possibility for me is because of my staff — maintenance, cleaning and administrative. They are amazing,” she said.

HABITAT SAYS THANKS To Marathon,

H

abitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys (HFHMK) is beyond grateful for the generous donations, financial and physical, during 2018.

Thanks to these multifaceted contributions, we repaired 80 homes in the Middle Keys that had been affected by Hurricane Irma.

We are truly blessed to have such wonderful support during our post-Irma mission.

Like many others in Marathon, Habitat began 2018 with more questions than answers. And as the debris was cleared and assessments were made, our staff of two (which had only recently doubled from its previous count of one) felt pitifully outnumbered and out-skilled with the enormous task of assisting local families. But where there is a will, there is a way and while we had the will, Habitat for Humanity International provided the way. Through the #HabitatHammersBack Program, funds were made available for us to hire a construction manager, a disaster coordinator, and an administrative assistant. This growth in staff allowed us to venture out into the community effectively, assess damaged homes, make plans for repairs, and begin reconstruction.

By summer, our staff grew to eight with the addition of two site supervisors and a volunteer coordinator and we worked each day on repairs!

All of our post-Irma positions are paid for through capacity-focused grants. Most of these will run out in 2019. Finding continued funding for these positions will be one our greatest challenges. In addition to our staff, continuing grants and donations specific for our repairs are similarly critical. Our generous contributors for 2018 include: All Area Roofing & Waterproofing, Inc., American National Red Cross, Bank of America, BB&T Bank, Benevity Community Impact Fund, Carrier Corporation, Centennial Bank, Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, D’Asign Source, DeWalt, Florida Keys Contractors Association, Gill St. Bernard’s School, Home Ownership for All Inc., IberiaBank, Lisa Ferringo, Marathon Boat Yard, Miami Dolphins Foundation, The Miami Foundation, Moherek Fishing Team, Ocean Reef Community Foundation, Publix Super Markets Charities, Salvation Army, Samsung, State Farm, Thrivent, United Way of the Florida Keys, Upper Keys Rotary Club, Wells Fargo, and Windswept Air Conditioning and Appliances.

Our repair projects in 2018 ranged from the smaller fixes of replacing damaged doors and windows to the larger undertakings of re-doing entire interiors gutted after Irma.

We are also in the pre-building phase of a full rebuild set to begin in 2019 for a family whose home was completely destroyed. Our Critical Repair Program can only continue as long as we have the volunteers and the funds.

In 2018, we hosted nearly 650 volunteers who selflessly donated 3,750 hours to rebuilding homes in the Middle Keys. Thank you to Thrivent and multiple individuals who have booked spots to volunteer in 2019 and thank you to D’Asign Source, Red Cross, Sunbelt Rentals, and Thrivent for already making pledges of financial support for 2019.

While our Critical Repair Program program is now an integral part of our service to our community, we haven’t lost sight of our pledge to continue creating affordable homeownership opportunities in the Middle Keys. This has never been an easy task, but with the help of the City of Marathon and the Monroe County BOCC, we closed on a parcel of land in late October. This led to an amazing moment late in 2018 when we opened up our Homeowner Application period!

Family Selection is currently underway and by summer of 2019, we will have six new homeowners to add to the long-term stability of our wonderful community.

But don’t think we are all work and no play. We made sure to fit our two FUNdraisers into the busy 2018 schedule! The proceeds from these events, which totaled just over $51,000, go directly toward the building of new affordable homes, as well as hurricane recovery repairs. Thank you to all who participated, and congratulations again to our 12th annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament winning anglers: Bev Sebree, RJ Lewis, Bob Taylor, and Donald DeLeon. Be sure to save the date for 2019 and “Fish for a Cause” at our 13th annual Mother’s Day

Dolphin Tournament on May 10 - 11. Also back this year was our Not-So Annual Spelling Bee. Always a fun-filled night, we were thrilled to have first-time team entries from both Marathon Middle School AND Marathon High School. The winning Team “ABC’s: Rebuilding the Keys,” sponsored by First State Bank, made it their “prerogative” to win and be keepers of the Bee Plaque by successfully spelling the word (did you already guess?), prerogative.

2018 was truly a year of inspiration and gratitude and all of us at Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys humbly offer our thanks and look forward to a productive year in 2019! he first month of the year has seen significant events in the Keys.

Henry Morrison Flagler was born on Jan. 2, 1830 in Hopewell, Ohio.

It would be 79 years later, on Jan. 4, 1909, when the New York and Florida Special began operating between New York and the Knights Key Dock. Previously the Special had run between New York and Miami.

Stepping farther back in time, it was Jan. 4, 1814 when, while still under Spanish ownership, Francisco Ferreira of St. Augustine petitioned his Excellency the Governor “to grant him in absolute property a Key situated among those called the Florida Keys, and is also known as Key Baca and also four small islands which are situated in the vicinity.” The petition was approved the next day, “As the services rendered by the petitioner are well known, and in consideration of the great losses which he has suffered by the Revolution…” Included in the transaction was Duck Key. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

In an effort to grant Keys runners an advantage, organizers of the 38th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run have set aside a block for those with photo identification showing a Keys address.

This locals-only registration opens on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 6 a.m. and often fills in minutes. Those registering early MUST have a Keys address with a photo identification that matches that address. Others will be disqualified.

Registration for the general public will open on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 6 a.m. The field is limited to 1,500 runners, total.

The race takes place on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 7:20 a.m. The span is closed to vehicular traffic from 6:45 to 9 a.m.

Cost to enter is $75 per person and registration can be done ONLY online at 7MBRun.com.

Students attending Monroe County Public Schools are allowed to run the 7 Mile Bridge Run at a reduced registration fee of $25, if registrations are returned by mail by Friday, Jan. 18. Student-aged children who are interested in running may pick up an application at any of the Monroe County public schools or can send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Marathon Runners Club, PO Box 500110, Marathon, FL 33050.

The proceeds of the event benefit Middle Keys youth, with an emphasis on athletics. Questions regarding the registration process will be fielded by 7 Mile Bridge Run Race Committee, 7MileBridgeRun@GMail.com.

Bertelli to speak in Marathon Historian Brad Bertelli, curator of Islamorada’s Keys History and Discovery Center and Keys Weekly columnist, will discuss the history of the Overseas Highway on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon. Bertelli’s will cover “both” the 1927 and 1938 grand openings of the highway. Peter and Marie Pittman will be present to discuss and sell their book, “Pathway Through Paradise: The Story of the Overseas Highway.” Admission is free and open to the public.

DEBBIE MUCARSEL-POWELL ON THE ISSUES READY TO TAKE OFFICE NEWLY ELECTED CONGRESSWOMAN ALREADY AT WORK

A

n audience member began the questioning: “You have such a long name, what should we call you?” Without missing a beat, the newly elected congresswoman says, “Debbie.”

Engaging and full of humor, Florida’s new 26th congressional district’s representative entranced a large audience of Keys residents on Dec. 15 for “Coffee with Debbie” at The Blue Room in Key West. She conveyed her gratitude to voters and assured her intent at transparency as a new member of the U.S. House.

Beating out Republican Carlos Curbelo was no easy feat, but Mucarsel-Powell hasn’t slowed down and assured the

audience of her enthusiasm for joining Congress. Before being sworn in on Jan. 3, 2019, Mucarsel-Powell has already exchanged her heels for stylish but sensible boots and has been busy pounding the congressional pavement.

“The day of the election I wanted to connect with you, and say thank you.

Key West has always had my back, and your energy and passion put me over the edge,” said Mucarsel-Powell.

Before taking questions, MucarselPowell said she has joined one of the strongest, most diverse freshman classes ever in Congress and looks forward to the diversity of bringing new perspectives to government. With such a large group of new representatives, she feels they will hold a lot of leverage. Already she has been in meetings with fellow congresswomen and said, “I have met with and established a good relationship with Nancy Pelosi; she knows our needs.”

Mucarsel-Powell is getting involved in committees such as Transportation and Infrastructure, where she sees the needs of our district best being met, especially considering our particular environmental concerns. She will be joining the newly formed House Select Committee on Climate Change as well. Mucarsel-Powell says she is ready to start learning and establishing relationships with key people and “bringing progress to this district.”

Her goal will be to reach across the aisle to Republicans, and she admits she will make compromises if it means getting things done. After being sworn in, Mucarsel-Powell will be voting on issues the very same day. But aside from her three weeks on the Hill a month, she will have an office at The Gato building in Key West. “My office is open any time; no one needs an appointment here or in D.C. I want to be a resource for you.”

ON IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: “I will not be a part of the House Intelligence Committee or the Judicial Committee, but I will be very interested to see where Mueller’s investigation goes. We should be seeing results fairly quickly after Jan. 3. But everyone agrees the only way to move forward is with bipartisan support.

Both sides have to have enough evidence and that requires the Republicans to be on board.

We’ll see. We have entered a constitutional crisis.

But my concern is how do we go about impeachment without dividing our country even further?”

ON IMMIGRATION/ICE: “It hits me personally. I am very disturbed by the seven-year-old girl that just died in immigration custody. Right now I am not allowed, but I plan on visiting the Homestead detention center as soon as I am sworn in. I need to investigate ICE’s power and their abuse, which is being directed by top officials. It’s a very serious issue. Even now, I am looking into a different case in Monroe County with the help of Commissioner Heather Carruthers. We have to look at these cruel and inhumane policies.”

ON GUN VIOLENCE: “I have already joined the gun violence task force, but I don’t think it’s aggressive enough. I hope to pass gun reform in the first 100 days; going after military-style weapons and enforcing stronger background checks is a priority.”

ON HEALTH CARE: “I will first be looking into reducing the cost of prescription medication and the corruption in politics of health care.”

“It’s disturbing that Republicans haven’t stopped their attack on health care. (Regarding a ruling in Texas declaring the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional) we are going to take action and look into countering that lawsuit.”

ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: “My focus right now will be to finish the Everglades restoration. Also, greenhouse emissions is a big task to try and reduce by 2030. For us, I think if we invest in green energy, bring it to our district, it will help boost the economy.”

ON AMENDMENT 4 IN FLORIDA: “Governor-elect Ron DeSantis has no power to overturn Amendment 4. Everyone can register to vote Jan. 8.” DeSantis has tried to delay Amendment 4 from going into effect, allowing ex-felons to register to vote. It was approved by 60 percent of voters and goes into effect Jan. 8, 2019.

ANOTHER FARCE ‘DRINKING HABITS’ SPILLS ON MCT STAGE

“W

hen I was a little kid, I wanted to be a nun. I think all little Catholic girls wanted to be nuns,” said Marianne Benvenuti, who plays Sister Augusta in the upcoming “Drinking Habits,” taking the stage at Marathon Community Theatre. “Now I get to fulfill my childhood dreams without having to take the vows of chastity and poverty. And obedience. I left out obedience.”

And with those simple sentences, the audience members know they are in for a wild ride with the latest MCT production. Certainly, director Jackie O’Neil has her hands full. She said the audience should keep their eyes glued on the action happening under the table on stage.

“There’s one scene where the two newspaper reporters are hiding under there as the nuns discuss their wine business, and the expressions are just wonderful. I crack up every time,” O’Neil said.

“Drinking Habits” is another comedy, on the heels of “Leading Ladies,” which recently ended its run. The story centers on two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing who have been making wine, secretly, to keep the doors

open. But the operation is threatened by an upcoming “inspection” and some snoopy journalists. As one reviewer wrote, “Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves.”

It’s certainly like a reunion for Benvenuti, O’Neil and Suzanne Terpos, who plays Sister Philamena. They worked together in 2011 during the production of “A Bad Year for Tomatoes.”

“Suzanne’s character does a wonderful job of explaining to Mother Superior (Joanne Zimmerman) what we’ve been up to,” said Benvenuti.

O’Neil is very complimentary of the three newcomers’ acting skills — Jim and Joanne Zimmerman and Nando Bonilla. She said she thinks Bonilla was coerced to audition by his friend Jim Kelly, also in the play.

“He has the best facial expressions,” O’Neil said. “It’s just a funny, funny show.”

“Drinking Habits” runs from Thursday, Jan. 10 to Saturday, Feb. 2. Shows are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a curtain at 8 p.m. The only matinee is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. Call the box office at 305-7430994 or visit www.marathontheater. org for tickets, $25 each.

A 160-pound loggerhead sea turtle, named Donatello, is released on Dec. 29 at Sombrero Beach in Marathon. It was one of two releases of the day for The Turtle Hospital. In the Upper Keys, the hospital released Shelmore, also a loggerhead sea turtle, who was rehabilitated after having a two-foot-long goldspotted snake eel removed from its body cavity.

Hospital staffers say how it got lodged there is a mystery, as turtles generally don’t eat eels.

I had the basic materials — a Pinterest account and a vintage Vita Mixer 4000. After about seven minutes of research into when this blender debuted and no clear answer, I’ll just give it my best guess: based on the styling, either the ’50 or ’60s. It weighs as much as a Smart car and when you flip it into reverse, a blue spark – not unlike the one that appeared over New York City on Dec. 28 – shoots out of the bottom.

It’s awesome. (Thank you to my late father-in-law and intrepid television infomercial shopper, George Matthis.)

I started by learning to WEAR the smoothies. I wish I had a cut reel of the first week. On Monday, like a newbie, I started the smoothie after I was already dressed for work. Of course, I was immediately “painted” in green goo. By Wednesday, I was smart enough to start while in my pajamas.

On Friday, I was naked. My husband would hide around the corner waiting for the inevitable smoothie explosion and then cackle like a maniac.

fabulous machine, the ancient seals have crumbled and the operation, I’ve learned, requires paper towels, paper plates, goggles and an outfit that is easy to wash, like a birthday suit.

The next thing I discovered is that I do not have the patience or the time to make a fresh smoothie every morning. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

So I bought these adorable little blue mason jars at Publix that fit a pint, or 16 ounces. I make three or four at a time and stash them in the back of the refrigerator.

The rub? The recipe. I started with pineapple, kale, coconut water. Good.

But was it good enough? I mean, really, I am trying to be healthy here. Then I added soaked chia seeds. Still good. A bit of fresh ginger? Sure, but you gotta cut that up fine or find a wider straw.

Then an extra apple and one cucumber … good but definite bloating. I consulted with my smoothie dealer who suggested a bit of fat, like coconut oil.

But then I went off my head, as the Brits said, and added lime juice.

Boy, was that bad — clear-the-roomwith-the-smell-alone, lip-puckering, butt-clenching BAD. Obviously, there was some type of chemical reaction on par with garage laboratory results in a Looney Tunes cartoon. I poured eight beautiful smoothies into the crab hole in my yard and nursed a broken heart for about a week before I started again.

I humbly submit to you that I am a work in progress when it comes to smoothie making. I welcome our readers’ constructive criticism and bullet-proof recipes. I will also need an apron embroidered with “K.I.S.S. In 2016, Nielsen reported that we spend 127 minutes per day on our smartphones, 63 minutes on tablets, 126 minutes on the laptop and 117 minutes watching TV. Our smartphones are now the biggest source of disruption to daily life – even when we’re not looking at them.

It allows users to take control of the time they spend interacting with their devices, by bringing 12 enhancements to Do Not Disturb, making this powerful time management tool even better by avoiding distractions. There is also a new Do Not Disturb During Bedtime mode, helping you get a better night’s sleep by dimming the screen and hiding notifications until prompted in the morning.

Most importantly, the update gives customers insight into how they are spending time on their devices. Screen Time creates daily and weekly reports showing users the total time spent in each app, how many notifications they receive, and how often they pick up their device.

And, if you’re feeling radical, try the following: • Unfollow everyone on Twitter for one week. Refollow only those you actively miss.

• Change your smartphone for a simple handheld device that only handles texts and calls.

GOUT: THE KING’S DISEASE A simple explanation for a painful big toe

H

ere in the Keys, we may not have easy access to a Wal-Mart. But one thing we do have available to us, at least on days when our communication devices are working properly, is breaking news. When the news contains items about potential health hazards, we get concerned.

Such was the case back in 2012, when researchers found an increased risk of death due to heart disease from the antibiotic azithromycin. Best known by the brand name Zithromax, azithromycin has been a popular choice for years among patients and doctors for a variety of infections, largely due to its ease of dosing. With its schedule of once a day for five days, what adult among us has not been on a “Z-pack” from time to time? And we pediatricians are very familiar with its use in children: in some diseases such as whooping cough, it’s often a first choice.

This, um, “Z-eal” for the drug was dampened a little bit by that 2012 study, which found an increase in cardiac death in adults taking azithromycin compared to antibiotics such as amoxicillin.

Fortunately, there have been additional studies since that time that have failed to show this increase.

On the other hand, other research has found that drugs in the azithromycin family (including its older cousin, erythromycin) can cause heart rhythm problems—also commonly known as “arrhythmia,” or abnormal heartbeat.

So we have this incredibly convenient antibiotic with few side effects in most people. But despite these reassuring recent studies, you may still be concerned about azithromycin. What’s an infected person to do?

I’d answer this question pretty much the same way no matter what antibiotic we were talking about.

It’s most important to realize that antibiotics treat bacterial infections.

As Key West pediatrician Dr. Melanie Youschak notes: “Antibiotics are wonderful when used appropriately.

They are strong ammunition against the right target. However, when used inappropriately for a nonbacterial infection, like the common cold, they have no benefit and carry a risk of side effects.”

Thus, have that conversation with your provider. Is an antibiotic the best treatment? Or will chicken soup do the trick? It’s also important to know what your provider is treating, what good the medicine will do, and what the risks are. Again, there is some risk with anything we take. We just try and choose meds where the risk is pretty minor compared to the benefit.

Finally, and especially in this era of “Dr. Right Now,” who may not know your health history, remember to share any past medical problems with your provider! You may already know to talk about any allergies you have to medications.

In the case of azithromycin, physicians may think twice about using the drug in patients who already have the tendency toward certain heart rhythm problems. If we don’t tell, they don’t know.

Almost. Today, we recognize it as a condition commonly misdiagnosed as arthritis. It happens most often to old, white men. It usually appears in the first joint of the big toe, but commonly affects the lower extremities. It has much to do with diet.

It is very, very painful.

Former New York Yankees pitcher David Wells is, by all accounts, a pretty tough guy. And yet, gout brought him to his knees.

Literally. In his autobiography, “Perfect I’m Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches, and Baseballs,” he said: “I just kind of woke up one morning, stepped out of bed, took one stride toward the bathroom and ended up giving a high falsetto scream, like a six-year-old girl, flopping to the floor, [and] grabbing my left big toe.”

Gout happens when too much uric acid in the blood produces crystals that lodge in and around joints. According to the Arthritis Foundation, the results are painful inflammation, stiffness, tangible heat, tenderness and swelling. Sometimes the pain happens in the middle of the night — a “shooting” sensation — and some sufferers say even the pressure of a light bed sheet can be excruciating.

THE CELTIC FESTIVAL … AND THE BAND OF BROTHERS (AND SISTERS) he Florida Keys Celtic Festival has it all — food, sport and working sheep dogs. But it’s the music that stirs the souls attending the festival on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13 in Marathon at the Community Park. It is the first festival on the Celtic circuit and a reunion of sorts for many of the bands — West of Galway, Screaming Orphans, Brendan Nolan, and Albannach. The musicians typically show up at the same spots during the first three months of each year.

“It’s the same group of bands that have been together 12 or 13 years doing this tour,” said Bernie Greene of West of Galway. “It’s really a homecoming. Everyone has white eyes, nobody’s tired of the road yet, and there are lots of good summer stories to tell when we get back to the hotel.”

West of Galway has been a part of Marathon’s annual festival since its inception six years ago. Ditto for Jamesie Johnston of Albannach.

“Bernie is a party animal … Bernie Bad Influence, Full Tilt Bernie” said Johnston, laughing.

“He puts on a good show during the day, loves his life, loves his work.

And after the show, Bernie will bring the instruments back to the hotel and start all over again!” said Johnston, describing the sometimes impromptu jam sessions that happen on the road.

He said the song could be anything, any genre. (We think he means it — Johnston’s bio describes a love for AC/ DC, Mötley Crüe, Metallica and Pink Floyd.)

The Florida Keys Celtic Festival musical lineup has an eclectic mix of musical styles.

Albannach, which describes itself as the “Bareknuckle Pipes and Drums,” is a very elemental, masculine energy that is largely instrumental. Until Jacquie Holland takes the mic. “She tugs at the heartstrings,” Johnston said. The biggest Albannach crowd pleaser is “Tweedle,” so listen for that!

The Screaming Orphans, an all-sister band from Ireland, are considered the “rock stars” of the show playing pop tunes and energizing the crowd.

(Spoiler: they aren’t really orphans, and they don’t scream.) “Step It Out Mary” is one of their “best sellers” on stage.

Greene modestly refers to West of Galway’s work as more traditional — “what you would hear in a pub in Ireland.” The band, based in Naples, is probably the best known Florida Celtic band. Greene and his bandmates have a love-affair with Marathon, returning annually at the mid-year mark to play a special fund-raising gig at Herbies for the Florida Keys Celtic Festival.

“We’re quite attached to Marathon,” Greene said. “All great people, tremendous.”

Brendan Nolan, playing with Colin Farrell in Marathon, also has a strong following. This is his first year playing the festival, but he has a very strong background in Irish music and is an established songwriter with eight albums to his credit. Raised in Dublin, matured in Montreal, and now residing in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida, Nolan has garnered huge reviews.

“Nolan’s poignant story-telling songs are expressed through traditional Celtic/Irish stylings, but Nolan can be considered a contemporary artist using old tools,” wrote Anthony Starez in the St. Petersburg Times.

SIXTH ANNUAL EVENT SET FOR NEXT WEEKEND

O

n Friday evening, Jan. 11, the Marathon Grill and Ale House, will host the third annual Kilts in The Keys Party. The musical group West of Galway will entertain along with a bagpipe procession, door prizes and raffles. Ale, spirits and refreshments will be plentiful.

The festival itself takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13 at Marathon Community Park. On day one, the festivities run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on day two they end a bit earlier, at 5 p.m.

Attractions include worldrenowned musical groups Albannach, Screaming Orphans, West of Galway and Brendan Nolan and Colin Farrell (see sidebar).

Festival goers also have a chance to witness Highland Athletics — the original “strongman” sport.

The tournament will include a sanctioned women’s highland athletics competition, men’s highland athletic demonstrations and the official Florida Haggis Hurling Championship. Also returning is the sheepdog herding eemonstration. Throughout the day, visitors will be entertained by periodic “pipe and drums” demonstrations. A children’s glen for the wee ones is set for one corner of the festival grounds, and attendees can also partake of the Celtic food and beer for sale, and browse specialized Celtic vendors.

On Sunday morning, Rev. Debra of the Saint Columba Episcopal Church will lead a special 10 a.m. service on the festival grounds.

The festival is hosted and organized by the Saint Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon, Celtic Heritage Productions and The Monroe County Tourist Development Council. Festival proceeds support Hammock House’s free after-school program and summer camps providing continuing education, and nutrition.

THE TRAIN YOU DIDN’T SEE COMING

L

ife is simpler than you think.

So is good health. Consider all the books on exercise, yet my 92-year-old motherin-law, who still rides her bike every day, can boil it down to this: keep moving! And consider the millions spent on diet food, fads and books, yet the best advice I ever heard was from food maven Michael Pollan: eat food; not too much; mostly plants.

But two monsters threaten America’s health that I hear very little buzz about. The first takes our life away from us. The second ruins the life we have.

In all my years as a pastor, family lawyer and counselor, one killer stands out: loneliness. The cause of death listed on the coroner’s report may be heart failure, liver failure, drug overdose, self-inflicted gunshot wound or even cancer, but oftentimes the true killer goes unnamed. Technology has enabled Americans to be more connected than ever, yet depression and teen suicide are at alarming levels. Turns out that having a thousand Facebook “friends” does not translate into a thousand people who will come to your aid when the wheels fall off or, for that matter, even want to hang out or watch a movie.

“60 Minutes” once did a segment on a village in Europe where scads of people lived past age 100. Their secret wasn’t diet, exercise or the local red wine. It was their connectedness. People were connected to friends and family and stayed connected. They drank coffee together, gardened together, played music together. They hung out. And lived to be a hundred.

The other great monster threatening our health and longevity is materialism. Greed, consumption, stuff. The answer, says legendary Rabbi Abraham Heschel, is a sabbath. Not so we can go to church, temple or mosque, though that might help us get connected and find a purpose bigger than ourselves. Heschel says a weekly sabbath – or period of complete rest – is necessary to escape America’s

“clattering commerce” and “fury of acquisitiveness. Gallantly, ceaselessly, quietly, man must fight for inner liberty to remain independent of the enslavements of the material world.”

Ponder that: We want stuff.

Think we need it. But we don’t.

Americans are masters at multi-tasking, but our Buddhist friends tell us to do one thing at a time. Our frenetic pace amounts to little more than a mad dash to nothing. Set aside the striving, shopping, wanting, political arguing, and nervous anxiety at least one day a week. Not for fireworks and somersaults, says Heschel, but to “mend our tattered lives.”

Go to Higgs or Smathers Beach.

Take a stroll through the botanical garden and out White Street pier. Nap. Practice mindfulness. Do yoga. Pray, meditate, read poetry and set your sights on inner peace.

Not so you’ll be more productive on Monday, though you probably will be. Do it for the sake of life. Yours.

UNLOCKING HIDDEN POTENTIAL

Exploring non-traditional fitness alternatives in 2019

T

he dawn of 2019 will undoubtedly drive throngs of eager new participants to gyms around the Florida Keys.

However, it seems that the newfound excitement quickly fades within a few weeks or months. For those who have exhausted typical avenues, all hope is not yet lost.

Just take a moment to consider the advice of two Marathon fitness professionals: KASEY OBER - FUNCTIONAL POWER YOGA Ober recently graduated Full Circle Yoga School with her 200hour teacher training in functional power yoga. Though its name implies a high physical demand, the title is slightly misleading. “It’s not a huge cardio workout,” Ober said, clarifying that her particular style revolves around perfecting movements used in everyday life, from lunges and squats to heavy lifting. Along the way, participants focus on maintaining correct posture and alignment of the head, spine, hips and legs.

Upon hearing the word yoga, a variety of challenging poses, called asanas, may come to mind. As Ober explained, however, yoga at its core is about “letting go of the ego and letting go of the mind” by using extreme focus and breathing to arrive at a place of self-realization. Yoga in its original form was westernized with the addition of postures to help students arrive at this state of mind, but true masters are able to enter such a mental state without these physical aids.

A release of conscious thought can help a participant to learn to live in the moment. In Ober’s words, “You only have so much time on this earth. You don’t want to spend it in your head; you want to experience things.” As she explained, by removing unnecessary thoughts that clutter the mind, students are able to release anxiety and tension, thereby altering the underlying causes of the habits that most aim to change with fitness resolutions. “People want to fix bad habits, but don’t realize the precursors that caused the habits. These are the things they need to fix. They can change their lives for the better by practicing how to live in the moment.” Such an awareness can help students make decisions that are honest and true to themselves.

On a more individual level, Ober noted that yoga helps her stay aware of her judgments, both of herself and others. “Every day people tell themselves a story that they believe,” she said.“If I’m judging someone for something, it’s a reflection of myself.” In the end, she explained, many judgments simply clutter the mind and are unnecessary.

Therefore, her training has taught her to, “be gentle with judgments, and be aware of them,” a practice she seems eager to pass on to others.

NORMA JEAN KELLY - PILATES Norma Jean is a 16-year veteran in Pilates instruction with her own studio, Pilates by Norma Jean, in Marathon.

She said most of her clients come to her studio after injuries or unsatisfactory results from their current workouts.

“I think people who come to Pilates have done a little bit of research and know it’s something that takes time to get results, but the results are permanent,” she said.

Kelly says that in her experience, while Pilates can be perceived as a female-dominated exercise form, many are unaware that it was created for men. The goal for her students is to develop a sharp, quick mind as well as a strong core that can help the body function more efficiently through spinal traction. By creating length in the spinal column, they can ensure that vital organs are receiving increased circulation in order to function at optimal levels.

One of the keys to Pilates is to give the client ownership of the fitness journey. Kelly described the exercise as something akin to a martial art. A client learns foundational exercises and builds on them with the instructor present as a supporter. “I’m not teaching you everything,” she said, “I’m teaching you how to get there and then I’m taking my hands off, and you become responsible. Call it a catalyst.” Giving clients this level of responsibility can spur them eventually to make lifestyle changes outside the studio of their own volition. The principles they learn can even be applied to everyday activities, she said. “I’m teaching you how to move more efficiently through life,” whether it’s cycling, fishing or going to the grocery store.

She frequently sees adults in their late 60s and 70s, and once had a client come to her at the age of 93. “No matter how messed up your body is, you can come and do a Pilates workout,” she said. With such an approach, the principles behind Pilates can be applied to those with various ailments, ranging from osteoporosis to cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA Lecture delves into benefits, how to obtain card

nside the Holiday Inn Key Largo, community members packed the conference room on Dec. 5 to get insight into medical marijuana.

The speaker was Dr. Gregory Sonn, who legally prescribes and recommends legal forms of cannabinoids to patients. Sonn has over 5,000 patients certified for medical marijuana.

Since 2008, Dr. Sonn has worked with Hope Healthcare Services in Fort Myers. After more than a decade of caring for patients who suffered from chronic diseases, Dr. Sonn realized that traditional medical practice (using only traditional medicines and therapies) would not be sufficient for his own health and well-being.

THE STRAINS

Sonn noted three strains of marijuana that are of value: sativa, indica and hybrids. “Sativas are a bit more stimulating. They’re tall, thin, Mediterranean, very pyscholactive, meaning the side effect profile is really beneficial for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) folks.”

As for indica, which is the female strain of marijuana, Sonn said it has short broad base leaves and is body heavy. “She’s good for pain. She’s good for sleep time,” he said.

Hybrids are simply combinations of indica and sativa, according to Sonn.

“Things to pay attention to is if it’s indica or sativa dominant,” he said.

“Everybody’s different and you have it out in a way,” he said. “Indica is good for sleep, spasms, pain, anxiety and nausea. Sativa is a bit more energizing and stimulating.”

EXTRACTION

Sonn said nurseries grow plants from sprouts and clones so they’re identical.

“There’s a vegetative state. They give it 24 hours of sunshine,” he said. “Once that reaches the state to flower, they change the light cycles. They force these beautiful plants to grow exponentially fast. Some move plants every day to make them bud and flower.”

Once plants bud and flower, they’re cut and brought to a harvest area and dried to 10 percent or less humidity. It’s then ground up and put into a pot with high pressure and low temperature. CO2, a gas, turns into a liquid. They pass liquid through the flower. As it warms back, this process is called superconduction; CBD drops out at its molecular weight and THC drops out at its molecular weight.

“They collect it into their own bottles.

Then they put it back together in some ratio for consumption,” he said.

TREATING SERIOUS ISSUES Sonn spent 18 years in end-of-life care. And for cancer treatment, Sonn said, he gets a lot of referrals from oncologists.

“They are all seeing the benefits,” he said.

“You go see a cancer doctor. He puts you on some poison. That kills cells good and bad. That’s your standard of care. If you add CBD to that standard of care, to the tune of 300 mg a day, which turns out to be $900 a month, they are showing amazing results. I wouldn’t even say this unless I was incredibly impressed with the data.”

As for treating stroke, Sonn noted that early indications show outcomes for people who were having an acute cerebralvascular event were better when using CBD. “The functional outcome, that’s really all that matters,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how much of your brain died; it matters how much you got back at the end of this event.”

BETTER TO VAPE THAN BURN For medicinal purposes, Sonn noted that it’s better to vape than burn.

“The problem with burning it is you don’t have a really good amount,” Sonn said. “It’s not really good medicine. If you are a new person, it’s hard to say put a small bud in a joint and smoke it and you’ll receive this much medicine. Improvements of vaporization are significant.”

MEDICAL MARIJUANA CARD Obtaining a medical marijuana script isn’t complicated, Sonn said. First, people need to see a doctor who certifies the patient. Once patients get a diagnosis deemed acceptable, they apply to the Florida Department of Health.

“Once you apply to DOH, the doctor does qualifications and DOH does bookkeeping. Once the doctor says you’re good, then you send an application to DOH for them to put rubber stamp on it. That rubber stamp costs $75 a year. If you want to be a caregiver, that’s $75 for you and the patient.”

Sonn said it takes anywhere from two weeks to 30 days to get the card. On average, cards are in patients’ hands in 20 days.

“Patients submit to DOH. Twenty days they give you another email saying ‘congrats you’re approved.’ In there, I write prescriptions. It’s electronic. It takes about three weeks. Then call a dispensary. I approve all forms, meaning you get topical, inhalation products, oral products or CBD, which I always recommend for everybody.”

hirty-three states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico have approved comprehensive public medical marijuana/cannabis programs.

The National Conference of State Legislatures characterizes Florida’s medical marijuana program as “comprehensive,” meaning there’s protection from criminal penalties for using marijuana for a medical purpose and there’s access to marijuana through dispensaries or some other system that is likely to be implemented. Also, the program allows a variety of strains, including those more than “low-THC,” and it allows either smoking or vaporization of some kind of marijuana products, plant material or extract.

Medical marijuana and low-THC cannabis are available in Florida. Per the state health department, medical marijuana is distinct from low-THC cannabis in that it can contain significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the chemical compound that causes the “high” commonly associated with cannabis. Unlike low-THC cannabis, the consumption of medical marijuana can lead to potent psychoactive effects in patients.

As to who qualifies, the health department says qualifying conditions include cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those above a terminal condition diagnosed by a physician or a chronic nonmalignant pain caused by a qualifying medical condition.

• The Raiders will continue hiring sportscasters to round out their front office. In addition to NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, the Raiders will hire Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth. John Madden will take a long bus ride to Las Vegas where he will bet on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl.

People will complain.

• The NFL playoffs will continue until they culminate in the Super Bowl.

This year’s champion will not be Miami or Pittsburgh. And if the Patriots lose, people will complain. But even more will rejoice.

• The State of Florida will remove its cranial appendage from its rectal orifice and figure out a way to assist Florida cities and counties in receiving long overdue FEMA reimbursements.

A boy can dream … but more likely people will complain.

• Legendary Miami Heat shooting guard Dwyane Wade will retire at the end of this season, bringing to an end an amazing career in the NBA bracketed by his first round draft pick by the Heat and those strange pink jerseys they’ve been wearing. People will complain.

• People will begin to realize that no matter whom they send to Congress, nothing constructive will ever be accomplished until our officials — including staff and lobbyists — start putting country ahead of party and money. Right. Actually, they’ll just turn “The Voice” back on to see the next generation of pop stars selected on a game show. People will complain.

• The Geico Gecko will be spotted in the company of an unnamed female iguana (not Mrs. Geico Gecko) here in the Keys. At first, Geico will stand behind the gecko. After little igueckos start hatching from eggs all over the island chain, however, the resulting interspecies scandal will force Geico to dump the gecko faster than woodchucks chuck wood. Reptiles will complain.

• The ghost of Fidel Castro will attempt to visit Miami. Angry members of the Miami exile community will advocate boycotting themselves. People will complain.

• Wilson, the soccer ball lost at sea in the Tom Hanks movie “Cast Away,” will be seen sunning himself at Sombrero Beach and will turn up for an AYSO soccer game at the Marathon Community Park. Unrecognized as a celebrity, Wilson will become deflated and disappear into the mangroves.

Tom Brady will complain.

• The Miami Marlins will play another season in that awesome retractable-roof stadium; they will attract more Red Sox and Yankee fans during interleague play than actual Marlins fans all season. People will complain.

• The Weekly Newspapers will maintain their high standards of journalism by encouraging this writer to keep coming up with more of these columns. People will complain.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A TRAINEE Editor’s note: Cristina Malafy, a Spinning and fitness instructor in Marathon, shared this “diary” submitted to her by a client. It’s a golden oldie, having made the global internet circuit more than once. And yet, a certain member of the Marathon Weekly staff can testify that this absolutely describes her perfectly. It is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into regular workout routine.

THURSDAY: Cristina was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed and her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn’t help being a half an hour late — it took me that long to tie my shoes.

Cristina took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. She sent another skinny bitch to find me. Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine — which I sank.

Dear diary, or my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Cristina, who identified herself as a 30-year-old Spinning instructor and model for athletic clothing and swimwear.

My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

MONDAY: Started my day at 6 a.m.

Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Cristina waiting for me. She is something of a Greek goddess — with blond hair, dancing eyes and dazzling with smile. Woo Hoo!!!!!

Cristina gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her Spinning class after my workout today.

Very inspiring!

Cristina was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week.

TUESDAY: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.

Cristina made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then she put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Cristina’s rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT! It’s a whole new life for me.

WEDNESDAY: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Cristina was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. Her voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Cristina put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Cristina told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life.

She said some other s@!t, too.

FRIDAY: I hate that bitch Cristina more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic, little cheerleader. If there were a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it.

Cristina wanted me to work on my triceps. I don’t have any triceps! And if you don’t want a dent on the floor, don’t hand me the damn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY: Cristina left a message on my answering machine with her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing her voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching up on 11 straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY: I am having the church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD this week is over. I will also pray that next year my daughter (the little shit) will choose a gift for me that is fun — like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!!

arathon postmaster Erik W. Pendlebury explains: There are approximately 10 postal tractor trailers that travel daily to the Keys from the Miami Distribution Plant.

An additional four trucks — Fed Ex, UPS, DHL and Amazon — stop at the post office daily to drop off parcels for us to deliver.

Marathon had about 11 vehicles on the road in the month of December and we worked seven days a week getting all of the packages to the customers on time.

Carriers have as many as 200-plus parcels on their route to deliver in the month of December, compared to an average of 70 parcels a day during the rest of the year.

I oversee 25 employees at the Marathon Post Office and we cover the area from Long Key to the 7 Mile Bridge. Currently, I am also the officer-in-charge of the Key West post office that has approximately 85 employees.

Some postal fun facts: • The US Postal Service delivers more mail to more addresses in a larger geographical area than any other post in the world.

• Benjamin Franklin was the first postmaster general, appointed by the Continental Congress in 1775.
