A

s a child, I had the impression that I would be offered free drugs by strangers much more frequently than the zero times SARA it’s happened. Not so with smoothies.

I had the basic materials — a Pinterest account and a vintage Vita Mixer 4000. After about seven minutes of research into when this blender debuted and no clear answer, I’ll just give it my best guess: based on the styling, either the ’50 or ’60s. It weighs as much as a Smart car and when you flip it into reverse, a blue spark – not unlike the one that appeared over New York City on Dec. 28 – shoots out of the bottom.

It’s awesome. (Thank you to my late father-in-law and intrepid television infomercial shopper, George Matthis.)

I started by learning to WEAR the smoothies. I wish I had a cut reel of the first week. On Monday, like a newbie, I started the smoothie after I was already dressed for work. Of course, I was immediately “painted” in green goo. By Wednesday, I was smart enough to start while in my pajamas.

On Friday, I was naked. My husband would hide around the corner waiting for the inevitable smoothie explosion and then cackle like a maniac.

Jerk. While the Vita Mixer 4000 is a fabulous machine, the ancient seals have crumbled and the operation, I’ve learned, requires paper towels, paper plates, goggles and an outfit that is easy to wash, like a birthday suit.

The next thing I discovered is that I do not have the patience or the time to make a fresh smoothie every morning. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

So I bought these adorable little blue mason jars at Publix that fit a pint, or 16 ounces. I make three or four at a time and stash them in the back of the refrigerator.

The rub? The recipe. I started with pineapple, kale, coconut water. Good.

But was it good enough? I mean, really, I am trying to be healthy here. Then I added soaked chia seeds. Still good. A bit of fresh ginger? Sure, but you gotta cut that up fine or find a wider straw.

Then an extra apple and one cucumber … good but definite bloating. I consulted with my smoothie dealer who suggested a bit of fat, like coconut oil.

But then I went off my head, as the Brits say, and added lime juice.

Boy, was that bad — clear-the-roomwith-the-smell-alone, lip-puckering, butt-clenching BAD. Obviously, there was some type of chemical reaction on par with garage laboratory results in a Looney Tunes cartoon. I poured eight beautiful smoothies into the crab hole in my yard and nursed a broken heart for about a week before I started again.

I humbly submit to you that I am a work in progress when it comes to smoothie making. I welcome our readers’ constructive criticism and bullet-proof recipes. I will also need an apron embroidered with “K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid)” or a little kitty hanging by a bitty claw that says “Hang In There, Baby” or some equally inspiring quote that will keep things running smoothie-ly.

PROGRAM AIMS TO HELP DADS CURRICULUM PROVIDES PARENTING SKILLS

A

Positive Step Monroe County, a non-profit organization serving Monroe County’s highest risk kids and their families since 1999, has started the Southernmost Fatherhood Initiative, providing free parenting skill coaching for fathers who are 18 to 30 years old. The program consists of 12 two-hour sessions and is available throughout the Keys.

According to APSMC founder Billy Davis, the curriculum helps dads develop new skills in parent, co-parent and child relationships, anger management, health, and substance abuse awareness among other topics. It has been developed for closed groups of six to 10 dads, and has been tested and validated through educational and social service organizations.

One group has already launched in Key West, and more will be added, said Davis. “The whole idea is to break the cycle of absentee dads,” he said, “and this is partly accomplished through teaching parenting skills to men who might not have had a role model — or a good role model.”

In addition to parenting-skill building, the program has been designed to offer crucial support in the form of introduction to 12-step programs if needed, GED referrals, OSHA training, job coaching, construction job referrals, and case management. “We are also providing pre- and postprogram testing, so that dads can evaluate their progress from start to finish,” he said.

A similar program is available to dads who are in detention situations.

THE TRAIN YOU DIDN’T SEE COMING

L

ife is simpler than you think.

So is good health. Consider all the books on exercise, yet my 92-year-old motherin-law, who still rides her bike every day, can boil it down to this: keep moving! And consider the millions spent on diet food, fads and books, yet the best advice I ever heard was from food maven Michael Pollan: eat food; not too much; mostly plants.

But two monsters threaten America’s health that I hear very little buzz about. The first takes our life away from us. The second ruins the life we have.

In all my years as a pastor, family lawyer and counselor, one killer stands out: loneliness. The cause of death listed on the coroner’s report may be heart failure, liver failure, drug overdose, self-inflicted gunshot wound or even cancer, but oftentimes the true killer goes unnamed. Technology has enabled Americans to be more connected than ever, yet depression and teen suicide are at alarming levels. Turns out that having a thousand Facebook “friends” does not translate into a thousand people who will come to your aid when the wheels fall off or, for that matter, even want to hang out or watch a movie.

“60 Minutes” once did a segment on a village in Europe where scads of people lived past age 100. Their secret wasn’t diet, exercise or the local red wine. It was their connectedness. People were connected to friends and family and stayed connected. They drank coffee together, gardened together, played music together. They hung out. And lived to be a hundred.

The other great monster threatening our health and longevity is materialism. Greed, consumption, stuff. The answer, says legendary Rabbi Abraham Heschel, is a sabbath. Not so we can go to church, temple or mosque, though that might help us get connected and find a purpose bigger than ourselves. Heschel says a weekly sabbath – or period of complete rest – is necessary to escape America’s “clattering commerce” and “fury of

acquisitiveness. Gallantly, ceaselessly, quietly, man must fight for inner liberty to remain independent of the enslavements of the material world.”

Ponder that: We want stuff.

Think we need it. But we don’t.

Americans are masters at multi-tasking, but our Buddhist friends tell us to do one thing at a time. Our frenetic pace amounts to little more than a mad dash to nothing. Set aside the striving, shopping, wanting, political arguing, and nervous anxiety at least one day a week. Not for fireworks and somersaults, says Heschel, but to “mend our tattered lives.”

Go to Higgs or Smathers Beach.

Take a stroll through the botanical garden and out White Street pier. Nap. Practice mindfulness. Do yoga. Pray, meditate, read poetry and set your sights on inner peace.

Not so you’ll be more productive on Monday, though you probably will be. Do it for the sake of life. Yours.

he end of the year and start of the new one have seen significant events in the Keys.

St. Paul’s Church held its first service at the county courthouse on Christmas Day 1832. The church’s first physical building was a coral rock structure built circa 1839. The property on which the church was built was transferred to the church by the widow of John Fleming. Mr. Fleming had been buried on the site. His remains were never disturbed and are still on the grounds, somewhere. The building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1846.

The second structure, a wooden building, was consecrated by Right Reverend C. E. Gadsden on Jan. 4, 1851. That building would be destroyed in the Great Fire of 1886.

Also on Jan. 4, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited the Dry Tortugas and, under the Antiquities Act, declared 47,125 acres (much of which is underwater) the Fort Jefferson National Monument.

Congress would redefine the area in 1992 and designate it the Dry Tortugas National Park.

L

ocals, especially those in the tourism industry, call it “Hell Week” — the seven days between Christmas and the New Year. But is it the busiest week of the year? Yes and no. About the only comparable period Keyswide, according to Kelli Fountain of the Tourist Development Council, is lobster mini-season. But the bug hunting congestion is very high for only four days, while Hell Week lasts the entire seven—and offers vital revenue streams to the backbone of our working communities.

Hoteliers, retailers and restaurateurs welcome Hell Week. It’s profitable. But jarring all the same, for its “zero to 60 mph” acceleration.

“Of course it has been a very busy week and we always expect to be busy,” said Key West restaurateur Richard Hatch, who owns Ricky’s Blue Heaven and Salute with his partner Suanne. “We had a long wait at Blue Heaven, and it’s been a good week for business.” Said son Ricky Hatch, the restaurant’s namesake, “We’ve gone through thousands of eggs in the kitchen.”

According to data collected at the end of 2015 and 2016, Hell Week typically sees a 95 percent hotel room occupancy rate, when averaged over seven days. (Numbers are not yet available for the end of 2018, and those from 2017 are excluded from this article because of Hurricane Irma).

“Memorial Weekend and Presidents Day weekend have very high occupancies as well.

The difference is that those occupancies are typically only for two or three days. During New Year’s, the lengths of stay are longer and the average daily rates are higher,” Fountain said.

Following the lingering impacts of Hurricane Irma in 2017, hotels and resorts have already reported high marks in occupancy and room rates over the past several weeks.

Yet it is two of Key West’s most popular tourism draws that offer accurate indicators of the success of this year’s Hell Week.

Michael Morawski of The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum uses the past several weeks as a strong metric to forecast the following year’s attendance. He said 2017 was on pace to match or surpass most annual figures in a five- to seven-year period. Then Irma hit, and the 2018 forecast dropped by 10 percent to 15 percent. However, after a strong December, 2018 has surpassed all expectations.

“Our 2018 attendance figures not only exceeded the low benchmark of 2017 (due to Irma),” said Morawski, “it matched or exceeded some of our largest December numbers over the last 10 years.”

Morawski is not the only tourism mogul to feel the positive impacts of December.

George Fernandez, COO of The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, said its growth between this year and last (over the same two weeks) in December is up by 29 percent in sales and 31 percent in traffic.

“The day after Christmas we beat an alltime 15-year record in both sales and traffic count from March of 2016,” said Fernandez.

“After a dismal first quarter in ‘17, I’m very optimistic that we are all going to see a good positive trend moving into 2019.”

Fernandez also reported a promising increasing number of Chinese and Indian tourists visiting the conservatory. Those metrics, along with hotel room occupancy and rates that will soon be compiled by the TDC in 2019, are not just indicators for Key West, but the entire county.

Virginia Panico, Executive VP of the Key West Chamber of Commerce, noted the same trends: “We are seeing many Europeans and Asians, along with adult couples 30-60 years of age, but less children.” Panico notes the higher volume of visitors that have increased “week after week toward the Christmas holiday.”

“It was one of the better Decembers in quite a while,” she said. “I believe we are going to have a strong season compared to last year and previous years. I am very optimistic for the 2019 tourism season due to the strong economy and increase in availability of direct nonstop airline flights.” Panico has been instrumental in courting airlines to run direct routes to Key West from major cities like New York, Chicago, and Dallas.

These trends help reverse the damage of last year’s considerable hurricane season.

One of the greatest impacts following Irma was the temporary closing of Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key. Not only is the resort one of the Keys’ most popular destinations, the facility also provides vital tax revenue to the TDC—which ultimately markets the Keys as a whole. After reopening four months ago, all eyes turned to Hawks Cay this December.

“I can say this — we’re packed,” said Sheldon Suga, Hawks Cay vice president and managing director. “We’re serving 1,500 guests right now.”

Because Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key is a privately held company, Suga can’t divulge its occupancy numbers, but December’s trend has him and others feeling good about 2019.

“We’ve received very positive comments from our guests. It’s going to be a good year,” Suga said.

H

ere in the Keys, we may not have easy access to a Wal-Mart. But one thing we do have available to us, at least on days when our communication devices are working properly, is breaking news. When the news contains items about potential health hazards, we get concerned.

Such was the case back in 2012, when researchers found an increased risk of death due to heart disease from the antibiotic azithromycin. Best known by the brand name Zithromax, azithromycin has been a popular choice for years among patients and doctors for a variety of infections, largely due to its ease of dosing. With its schedule of once a day for five days, what adult among us has not been on a “Z-pack” from time to time? And we pediatricians are very familiar with its use in children: in some diseases such as whooping cough, it’s often a first choice.

This, um, “Z-eal” for the drug was dampened a little bit by that 2012 study, which found an increase in cardiac death in adults taking azithromycin compared to antibiotics such as amoxicillin.

Fortunately, there have been additional studies since that time that have failed to show this increase.

On the other hand, other research has found that drugs in the azithromycin family (including its older cousin, erythromycin) can cause heart rhythm problems—also commonly known as “arrhythmia,” or abnormal heartbeat.

So we have this incredibly convenient antibiotic with few side effects in most people. But despite these reassuring recent studies, you may still be concerned about azithromycin. What’s an infected person to do?

I’d answer this question pretty much the same way no matter what antibiotic we were talking about.

It’s most important to realize that antibiotics treat bacterial infections.

As Key West pediatrician Dr. Melanie Youschak notes: “Antibiotics are wonderful when used appropriately.

They are strong ammunition against the right target. However, when used inappropriately for a nonbacterial infection, like the common cold, they have no benefit and carry a risk of side effects.”

Thus, have that conversation with your provider. Is an antibiotic the best treatment? Or will chicken soup do the trick? It’s also important to know what your provider is treating, what good the medicine will do, and what the risks are. Again, there is some risk with anything we take. We just try and choose meds where the risk is pretty minor compared to the benefit.

Finally, and especially in this era of “Dr. Right Now,” who may not know your health history, remember to share any past medical problems with your provider! You may already know to talk about any allergies you have to medications.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA Lecture delves into benefits, how to obtain card

nside the Holiday Inn Key Largo, community members packed the conference room on Dec. 5 to get insight into medical marijuana.

The speaker was Dr. Gregory Sonn, who legally prescribes and recommends legal forms of cannabinoids to patients. Sonn has over 5,000 patients certified for medical marijuana.

Since 2008, Dr. Sonn has worked with Hope Healthcare Services in Fort Myers. After more than a decade of caring for patients who suffered from chronic diseases, Dr. Sonn realized that traditional medical practice (using only traditional medicines and therapies) would not be sufficient for his own health and well-being.

THE STRAINS Sonn noted three strains of marijuana that are of value: sativa, indica and hybrids. “Sativas are a bit more stimulating. They’re tall, thin, Mediterranean, very pyscholactive, meaning the side effect profile is really beneficial for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) folks.”

As for indica, which is the female strain of marijuana, Sonn said it has short broad base leaves and is body heavy. “She’s good for pain. She’s good for sleep time,” he said.

Hybrids are simply combinations of indica and sativa, according to Sonn.

“Things to pay attention to is if it’s indica or sativa dominant,” he said.

“Everybody’s different and you have it out in a way,” he said. “Indica is good for sleep, spasms, pain, anxiety and nausea. Sativa is a bit more energizing and stimulating.”

EXTRACTION Sonn said nurseries grow plants from sprouts and clones so they’re identical.

“There’s a vegetative state. They give it 24 hours of sunshine,” he said. “Once that reaches the state to flower, they change the light cycles. They force these beautiful plants to grow exponentially fast. Some move plants every day to make them bud and flower.”

Once plants bud and flower, they’re cut and brought to a harvest area and dried to 10 percent or less humidity. It’s then ground up and put into a pot with high pressure and low temperature. CO2, a gas, turns into a liquid. They pass liquid through the flower. As it warms back, this process is called superconduction; CBD drops out at its molecular weight and THC drops out at its molecular weight.

“They collect it into their own bottles.

Then they put it back together in some ratio for consumption,” he said.

TREATING SERIOUS ISSUES Sonn spent 18 years in end-of-life care. And for cancer treatment, Sonn said, he gets a lot of referrals from oncologists.

“They are all seeing the benefits,” he said.

“You go see a cancer doctor. He puts you on some poison. That kills cells good and bad. That’s your standard of care. If you add CBD to that standard of care, to the tune of 300 mg a day, which turns out to be $900 a month, they are showing amazing results. I wouldn’t even say this unless I was incredibly impressed with the data.”

As for treating stroke, Sonn noted that early indications show outcomes for people who were having an acute cerebralvascular event were better when using CBD. “The functional outcome, that’s really all that matters,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how much of your brain died; it matters how much you got back at the end of this event.”

BETTER TO VAPE THAN BURN For medicinal purposes, Sonn noted that it’s better to vape than burn.

“The problem with burning it is you don’t have a really good amount,” Sonn said. “It’s not really good medicine. If you are a new person, it’s hard to say put a small bud in a joint and smoke it and you’ll receive this much medicine. Improvements of vaporization are significant.”

MEDICAL MARIJUANA CARD Obtaining a medical marijuana script isn’t complicated, Sonn said. First, people need to see a doctor who certifies the patient. Once patients get a diagnosis deemed acceptable, they apply to the Florida Department of Health.

“Once you apply to DOH, the doctor does qualifications and DOH does bookkeeping. Once the doctor says you’re good, then you send an application to DOH for them to put rubber stamp on it. That rubber stamp costs $75 a year. If you want to be a caregiver, that’s $75 for you and the patient.”

Sonn said it takes anywhere from two weeks to 30 days to get the card. On average, cards are in patients’ hands in 20 days.

“Patients submit to DOH. Twenty days they give you another email saying ‘congrats you’re approved.’ In there, I write prescriptions. It’s electronic. It takes about three weeks. Then call a dispensary. I approve all forms, meaning you get topical, inhalation products, oral products or CBD, which I always recommend for everybody.”

hirty-three states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico have approved comprehensive public medical marijuana/cannabis programs.

The National Conference of State Legislatures characterizes Florida’s medical marijuana program as “comprehensive,” meaning there’s protection from criminal penalties for using marijuana for a medical purpose and there’s access to marijuana through dispensaries or some other system that is likely to be implemented. Also, the program allows a variety of strains, including those more than “low-THC,” and it allows either smoking or vaporization of some kind of marijuana products, plant material or extract.

Medical marijuana and low-THC cannabis are available in Florida. Per the state health department, medical marijuana is distinct from low-THC cannabis in that it can contain significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the chemical compound that causes the “high” commonly associated with cannabis. Unlike low-THC cannabis, the consumption of medical marijuana can lead to potent psychoactive effects in patients.

As to who qualifies, the health department says qualifying conditions include cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those above a terminal condition diagnosed by a physician or a chronic nonmalignant pain caused by a qualifying medical condition.

ATWOOD HEADLINES 37TH ANNUAL LITERARY SEMINAR IN KEY WEST

T

he 37th annual Key West Literary Seminar, “Under the Influence: Archetype & Adaptation,” begins Thursday, Jan. 10, at the San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St., and runs through Sunday, Jan. 13. This year’s seminar, which is sold out, will examine the roots of literary culture, exploring the influence of tales told

by Homer and Shakespeare and in folk and fairy tale traditions the world over.

This year’s keynote speaker is Margaret Atwood, an iconic writer whose dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” has found new popular resonance with the television series of the same name. Atwood will delve into the literary underpinnings of this groundbreaking work, together with her Homeric and Shakespearean adaptations, “The Penelopiad” and “Hag-Seed.” On Saturday night, Jan. 12, New Yorker poetry editor Kevin Young and acclaimed poet Rowan Ricardo Phillips sit down for a discussion of the influence of music — from Beethoven to Big Pun — in their work.

Throughout the weekend, writers will discuss literary influences and adaptions, including graphic novel treatments of “Frankenstein” and “The Wizard of Oz” with Victor LaValle and Eric

Shanower; adaptations of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Valerie Martin, and of “The Great Gatsby” by Stephanie Powell Watts. Joyce Carol Oates will talk about the influence of H.G. Wells; Emily Wilson, about her translation of the Odyssey, which the New York Times calls “radically contemporary”; and Geraldine Brooks and Nicole Galland discuss the flexibility of good stories from “Othello” to “Little Women.” Dexter Palmer offers a dark new tale inspired by “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” while Naomi Novik, Danielle Paige and Meg Cabot explore the intersection of fairy tales and modern femininity.

T

he Waterfront Playhouse theatre welcomes new artistic director Tom Thayer, who has taken the reins from the revered Danny Weathers.

Thayer, a four-year resident of Key West, has one of the most cultivated theater resumes, both on- and offstage.

The Kentucky native, who was raised in Tennessee, graduated from American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. For decades since, not only has he acted but also directed, produced and choreographed hundreds of productions. He has also taught at Austin Peay State University Center of Creative Arts, where he earned a Lifetime Achievement Award and Ovation Award for the Arts; New York’s The Dwight School and The Rhodes School as well as a stint at the Metropolitan Museum. Thayer has earned two Outstanding Production Awards from the Nashville First Night Awards.

Thayer started as Waterfront’s business manager and box office manager in 2016, but now he is at its helm. Thayer chose to open with a large production, “Peter and the Starcatcher,” setting the tone for this season. He spent four months in preproduction and four weeks rehearsing with cast and crew, which showcases his thoughtful and meticulous attention to detail. “Peter and the Starcatcher” is a monumental ensemble that, through the talent onstage, shows Thayer’s extraordinary vision and experience has already begun to create and continue the legacy of memorable theater in Key West.

“I’m excited to take the Waterfront in a whole new direction,” said Thayer.

With this play’s monumental performance, it’s bound to be a very good direction.

hroughout its 39-year history, the Red Barn Theatre in Key West has always found a way during the season to deliver something a little further left of center than normal … something eclectic, with unexpected turns and crazy characters.

Case in point: this year’s rendition of the Red Barn’s signature Short Attention Span Theatre, due to open Tuesday, Jan. 15, for a four-week run.

Sub-titled “Enjoy the Ride,” the fastpaced show will feature seven playwrights, six actors, and six directors.

“We called it ‘Enjoy the Ride’ because we want the audience to take the ride with us, like a Disneyland ride,” said Mimi McDonald, managing director of the Red Barn and one of the directors of the show. “We want them to experience all the crazy shows we’ve chosen like they are on a theme park ride.”

How crazy, you ask?

“Well,” McDonald said, “without revealing too much, let’s just say there will be animal costumes, a seductive plant, a pushy cat, an overly-helpful, intellectual penguin, and a look into the dark corners of the minds of Disney characters on a break. And that’s just for starters.”

The show will feature short plays culled from many sources, McDonald said. Two playwrights – Mike McKeever and Rich Orloff – are associated with Miami’s City Theatre, probably the top short-play venue in the country. One of the plays won the Samuel French OffOff-Broadway 41st Festival competition.

Another is an original piece by local actress/dancer (and now playwright) Carolyn Cooper. And there’s a Shel Silverstein piece – the late, celebrated playwright and author was always a friend of the Red Barn and of Gary McDonald, one of the theater’s founders.

The actor ensemble features Don Bearden, Vanessa McCaffrey, John Reynolds, Carolyn Cooper, Erin McKenna, and New York import Jeremy Zoma. The directors include Mimi, Gary, and Jack McDonald, Amber McDonald-Good, Richard Grusin, and Dave Bootle. The playwrights who provided the short plays are Mike McKeever, Rich Orloff, Shel Silverstein, Carolyn Cooper, Mark Harvey Levine, Scott Gibson, and Andrew Leeds and Lindsey Kraft.

“These are all people who have worked together before, who enjoy working together, and most of them have done one of our Short Attention Span shows,” McDonald said. “That basically ensures that it’s loose, it’s fun, it’s lively, and these shows have always been some of our most popular. Come ready to laugh and have a good time.”

veryone has the best of intentions with resolutions, whether it’s the “new year, new you” mindset or an extreme new diet (Hello, Whole30). Of course, it’s a good thing to strive for the best version of oneself — but how do we accomplish that in a way that is realistic and sustainable?

We caught up with Joshua Dais, health and fitness specialist and personal trainer at Body Zone Key West (and boy, were we out of breath). Dais’ expertise lies in injury prevention and recovery and weight loss. Having moved to Key West from the Oregon coast, where he worked in a hospital and fitness facility, he has considerable experience with clients who have had surgery, chemotherapy, or existing medical conditions. Dais also does personal training for clients of varying ages, stations and fitness levels.

What’s the story of your fitness journey? I was never an athlete. I started out at the first gym I ever worked at as a janitor.

I’d come in as a custodian and cleaned at night. I was over 300 pounds at the time, and I got a free gym membership with the job. A year later, I had lost 120 pounds. And I climbed that ladder one step at a time: from custodian, to maintenance, to front desk, to teaching classes, to being the lead trainer. It’s really been a process. I’ve worked with a ton of amazing people from doctors to trainers, so I’ve seen it from the gym standpoint and from the medical aspect. It’s really been quite the journey.

What fitness challenges are particular to Key West? Well, I’d say your external environment has a large role to play. We’re in an environment where folks want to play or have fun and often go downtown to a bar or restaurant. There’s also the issue of time management: there’s always something going on down here. There’s a parade, there’s a party, so it’s A) finding time and B) avoiding setbacks, like the impulse to go downtown with your friends. Those are the biggest ones that get in your way.

What are the most common fitness New Year resolutions? The most common thing you hear is the “new year, new me” fad.

People think: it’s a new year, and I can step in in a new fresh way. Whether that’s shedding weight that they’ve accumulated, or transforming their bodies in a way they haven’t before. Then we also have the influx of people returning to their homes, so you get the resolution people and the snowbirds.

Why do people fail to accomplish their goals? There are three big factors: A) appointing time B) the external environment and C) they’re often new at it. Most people coming in to the gym, they may have done something like this in the past, but they’re

you were previously doing, so consistency and simplicity. And if you fall off?

That’s okay. So you get back on the wagon, and you do the best that you can. That’s all you can ask yourself.

What are your tips for facilitating long-term physical fitness in the Keys? It’s all kind of one big process: setting long term goals, having someone that you can check in with, or someone like myself: a trainer, or a class at the gym that you can attend. Whether it’s a trainer or a friend, you need someone keeping you accountable. And it’s also checking in with yourself, and selfmonitoring, and finding enough to hold you accountable.

How do you feel about weighing yourself? It has its pros and its cons. You get a number, and if that’s helpful to you, so be it. But it’s one number. You might lose inches instead of pounds. If you want to do it, I’d recommend once every other week. Try to do it at the same time, so maybe it’s before you go to work, and it’s consistent with the scale and clothing. You may weigh yourself at Publix, and you’re five pounds heavier. So twice a month, same type of clothing and time of day, same scale.

relatively new at it. So they can suffer from a lack of knowledge and the challenge of a new approach. It’s like turning someone loose in the kitchen and they don’t know how to cook.

Then, there are the people that already incorporate it in their lives and are taking it a step further or continuing on a foundation they’ve already built. That’s consistent.

What is your advice to reach those goals or make them more attainable? Step one is to try not to be overwhelmed. The two biggest factors for success are simplicity and consistency. Find something realistic and maintainable — what is some driving factor that you can work with? Once you find it, that driving force, whether it’s one or two days a week in the gym, stick with it. The fact that you are doing something is better than what

What are the healthy options in town?

There is always a yin to the yang. There are tons of different options and things you can do to set yourself up for success in diet. You can ask for specific items on the side, choose different options at restaurants, you can ask for lettuce instead of a bun on your burger, you can get dressing on the side. There are also restaurants like Date & Thyme and Grain and Berry that are health-friendly and easy and fast.

What are some easy steps to take to start a new routine? Enjoyment is a huge portion of it: if you look at it as more of a chore, then it’s not going to be fun. Just like if you want to come home and cook but you have dishes to do, you’re more likely to get takeout. If you are planning to walk on a treadmill, and you hate it, you’re more likely to have dinner and a drink instead. Be realistic. And recruit friends: get a girlfriend or a buddy from work.

If you team up, it adds accountability.

One of the nice parts about being in the Keys is that it’s warm. It’s far more inviting to go out for a walk or run after work — it’s nice and multiple people are out, so that adds an element of enjoyment and tons of options.

Any final advice? There are going to be a lot of things that get in the way. So, you can burn the wagon, you can fall off it, or you can keep moving forward. Put one foot in front of the other. And that is far better than staying home and doing nothing. So don’t be too hard on yourself.

he Studios of Key West is ringing in the new year with a multitude of creative, exciting and innovative exhibitions, each offering an intriguing glimpse into the creative mind, from literature to the visual arts. With an opening on Thursday, Jan. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. and running through Jan. 31, shows will feature O, Miami; Rhonda Bristol; Annie Dillard; and Larry Blackburn.

In the main Zabar Project Gallery, local Pulitzer prize-winning author and multitalented artist Annie Dillard will display oil portraits of famous authors when they were young. There will be more than two dozen small-scale portraits done on pine shingles that she obtained from her summer house on Cape Cod. Dillard’s deep love of portraiture, both in prose and paint, comes through with outstanding clarity in small, well executed gems.

“No one knows what those young writers looked like when they were doing their crucial work,” says Dillard. “My hope is that future young writers will not despair that they look ordinary.

Almost everyone does.”

On the second-floor Zabar Lobby Gallery, photographer Larry Blackburn has created a marriage of local arts with a truly collaborative show titled “Dual Visions.”

Blackburn turned his photos into giclees on canvas and invited local artists to work and transform them. Artists such as Fran Decker, Rick Worth, Sean Callahan, Tony Gregory, Marky Pierson, Jody Rae Campbell, Amanda Johnson, Barb Fineberg, Deb Moore, Mike Kunkle and Susann D’Antonio added their distinct style to Blackburn’s initial creation.

Upstairs in the third-floor XOJ Gallery, Rhonda Bristol’s “Glimpses: Inside Personal Space” features works on canvas and in clay which impart elements of West African and Caribbean design. The images are a colorful, frenetic use of line drawing, paint and portraiture. “I strive to capture an aspect of the human psyche and am involved with storytelling and history,” said Bristol. “These works mainly focused on ‘The Grand Feminine’ and those experiences powerful enough to be recorded as soul captured moments depicted on canvas and in clay.”

MUSIC WITH HEART A CAUSE YOU CAN TAP YOUR FEET TO SARAH THOMAS

T

he Key West Theater has hosted acts from R&B to country and everything in-between … but there’s never been a better reason to join in the fun than the inaugural performance of Music with Heart. Kim Gordon’s concert series benefits charities of all stripes, and her upcoming show on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 8:00 p.m. benefits the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. The show will be cabaret style, with up-tempo big band numbers as well as tear-jerking ballads. Gordon promises there will be plenty of “toe tapping.” Boasting an impressive three-octave range and gads of stage experience, she has been producing shows in Key West for more than 15 years and has appeared on stages from Miami to New York.

“This is my area of passion,” she said, “Broadway and the great American songbook.” Gordon describes the cabaret productions as “a great luxury for me,” and a notable big band is accompanying her onstage.

“I’m thrilled with this lineup,” Gordon said. “I have to mention Joe Dallas first, because Joe has been in every single show I have ever cast or ever produced. He’s also a board member with Music with Heart. Hal Howland — we haven’t worked together yet, but we’ve known each other for years. Tim Mayer is on sax, who is a Grammy nominee, and he’s only in town a few weeks. There’s masterful pianist James King, and Ann McFarland has a Ph.D. in music, and she’s a retired college professor.”

The show will span genres and tempos.

“We are going to do swing, there’s a jazz piece, Broadway standards, American songbook, and an avant-garde piece called ‘Stars and the Moon’ by Jason Robert Brown. We are going interesting places.”

Gordon spent many years in New York, and she describes the cabaret as “New York style.” She kicks off the show with the number “Arthur in the Afternoon,” which is “a little bit naughty,” (imagine the titillating subject matter of “Afternoon Delight”) and is sure to get the audience in the mood.

Gordon is bubbly and brimming with funny, wisecracking energy. She occasionally breaks into song in a way that makes it clear music is second nature for her. She is a Miami native with deep musical theater roots; her mother taught dance in Miami for 50 years, and started Gordon dancing and singing young.

She said: “My typical day when I was little, seven or eight years old, was dance class, voice lessons, piano lessons, modeling class, theater class, plus school, where I was expected to have an A average. I enjoyed the heck out of theater stuff, especially in my teens.” She learned to memorize scripts with her mother and calls musical theater “in my blood.” While Gordon studied broadcast journalism at University of Denver (where she first appeared in “Guys and Dolls”) and made a career out of television marketing, she said, “Music has always been my hobby, so I’m glad to get back to it professionally.”

Gordon’s considerable career in marketing put her in the national spotlight in a different way. She was spokeswoman for companies like Visa and eBay, and she had a recurring column in “Entrepreneur” magazine. She laughs, “I spent thirty-plus years teaching people how to do this: how to do marketing and publicity, and to fundraise.

So, it’s going to be interesting to see if I can follow my own advice.”

While Gordon has fundraised through music many times before, raising half a million dollars for charity over the years, this is the first show under the umbrella “Music with Heart.” She said, “I founded it to do one thing, to raise money through music and related arts. I’ve put up start-up funds, and we need donors to help with our mission.”

Gordon calls the donors, adorably, “Heartthrobs.”

Previously, money has had to be fueled through a nonprofit, so Gordon has coordinated with local organizations like the Key West Women’s Club. Her shows have benefited local and national charities, like Samuel’s House, Wesley House and the Boys & Girls Club.

Not only music, but Key West itself, is close to Gordon’s heart. The concert will mark her 16-year anniversary on the island.

She said, “We are the most generous community I’ve ever witnessed. It’s spectacular.”

She notes that there are many options when it comes to fundraisers in Key West, but this concert series will be special, featuring professional singers and musicians who have built careers the world over and come together on a Key West stage with a purpose.

“The music has got to be great or people won’t come. It has to be a fun evening. One thing I promise is that it will be fun and interesting, and you’ll see something you haven’t seen anywhere else. Eventually, I’d love to have a music festival. So I’m dreaming … large. But I tend to have those kinds of dreams, and they happen.”

Gordon also tempts the audience with an opening night party: Half Shell Raw Bar and Turtle Kraals have generously donated champagne and desserts to fete opening night. “After the show, I get a little funny,” she laughs, “Let’s just make sure I don’t jump into the chocolate fountain.”

I’d wager that show goers might hope otherwise. Gordon has a clear talent for making fundraising into a celebration and doing good a natural byproduct of making great music. Though Gordon retired from her primary career in her early 50s, Music with Heart is just gearing up. “I’d love for us to do four events in season and one or two out of season. It will be a full-time job for me, and I’m excited about that.”

Gordon said, “I’m drawn to songs that tell a story.” And it seems this story is just starting.

igital distractions are sweeping through our lives.

In 2016, Nielsen reported that we spend 127 minutes per day on our smartphones, 63 minutes on tablets, 126 minutes on the laptop and 117 minutes watching TV. Our smartphones are now the biggest source of disruption to daily life – even when we’re not looking at them.

Push notifications, texts and emails just keep on coming.

Myriad reports tell us that one in three adults now regularly check their phones during the night, 79 percent of smartphone owners check their device within 15 minutes of waking and 30 percent check it while in the bathroom.

Forensic cyberpsychologist Dr. Mary Aitken reckons we check our phones 200 times a day – that’s every seven minutes!

However, this tech addiction is creating havoc with our minds, bodies and souls – zapping our attention, smashing our productivity and playing havoc with our sleep as a result of all the blue light our screens produce.

What’s so good about Apple’s iOS 12 update?

It allows users to take control of the time they spend interacting with their devices, by bringing 12 enhancements to Do Not Disturb, making this powerful time management tool even better by avoiding distractions. There is also a new Do Not Disturb During Bedtime mode, helping you get a better night’s sleep by dimming the screen and hiding notifications until prompted in the morning.

Most importantly, the update gives customers insight into how they are spending time on their devices. Screen Time creates daily and weekly reports showing users the total time spent in each app, how many notifications they receive, and how often they pick up their device.

Tech addiction can affect attention and productivity as well as sleep. CONTRIBUTED

By understanding how they’re interacting with their iOS devices, people can take control of how much time they spend in a particular app, website or category of apps. The App Limits feature allows people to set a specific amount of time to be in an app, and a notification will display when a time limit is about to expire.

Therefore, if you are looking to detox your digital life and improve your wellbeing with less time in front of a blue screen, here are some ideas to get you started: • Self-impose a ban on device use for the first hour on waking and the last hour of the day.

• Stash your smartphone in your bag or case at the start of a meeting.

• Set your device to “flight mode” when you need to focus on a task or project.

• Create an email filter that moves mail with certain keywords to a separate folder: make the keywords “unsubscribe,” “manage your account” and “privacy policy” and you’ll see a vast reduction in your junk mails.

• Set regular times when you check your mail – maybe two or three times a day at dedicated times.

And, if you’re feeling radical, try the following: • Unfollow everyone on Twitter for one week. Refollow only those you actively miss.

• Change your smartphone for a simple handheld device that only handles texts and calls.

For tourists, Key West is a place to let loose (both their inhibitions and belt buckles) and indulge in local delicacies like conch fritters and Cuban mix sandwiches. But what to do if you live here year-round and don’t want to miss out on dining out? Here are our recommendations for the best healthy, delicious, plant-based fare in Key West.

What does a “good education” mean to you? I think it’s having teachers that care, an environment where you can ask questions without being judged, doing things outside of the classroom, and not being looked at as a test score.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you? Golf, track and soccer — exercising is a great stress reliever. Drama club — I started the club because I love the creative environment. Choir — I love to sing and be on stage. Steel pan band — it’s nice to have a class during the day that isn’t academic. Executive board — our class is so close, and I love being a part of all of the school spirit.

What are your plans after high school? To study musical theater and voice in college and then perform in New York or touring shows.

What do you hope to be remembered for at KWHS? Being a go-getter. I hope I showed people to stand up for what they believe in and make things happen.

Will you makethe Keys your permanent home? I’m not sure. … I want to travel and definitely want to live in New York for a little while … so I’ll see where I am after that.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Successfully make a career of music, backpack Europe, and to have gone back to South Africa to reunite with my friends there.
