ears of chronic underfunding and millions of dollars in maintenance costs face U.S. national parks. Now, those who enter Everglades and Dry Tortugas national parks will soon be paying more to get in.

A letter issued Dec. 7 by Superintendent Pedro M. Ramos states that Everglades National Park will collect fees based on the new rates for all park visitors starting Jan. 10, 2019. That also includes visitors who use commercial services such as fishing guides.

Per-person fees are going from $8 to $15, while vehicle and vessel fees are going from $25 to $30. Ramos’ letter to commercial operators says there are two methods to assist patrons in fulfilling their entrance fee requirements.

One is to notify patrons where to obtain an entrance pass. Guides and other for-profits who go on national park territories can also enter into a third-party agreement with Everglades National Park, allowing them to purchase pre-printed passes for purchase. They can buy passes in bulk at a 5 percent discount in person or via phone.

Locally, fishers and guides aren’t pleased with the move that’s making them vendors for the federal government. But with a maintenance backlog of $88 million at Everglades National Park, it appears the feds are reaching for money in any way they can.

While entry fees are drawing concern, some lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are trying to tackle the $11.6 billion maintenance backlog that’s hit national parks. In July,

House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop, R-Utah, and committee ranking member Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., introduced legislation that would establish a National Park Service and Public Lands Restoration Fund.

Known as the Restore our Parks and Public Lands Act, the bill would address the deferred maintenance backlog by using federal energy development revenue not otherwise allocated for other purposes.

The bill passed through the House Committee on Natural Resources, but it hasn’t reached the House floor for a vote. A similar proposal in the Senate is led by Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Mark Warner, D-Va. Along with entry fees, guides are also getting hit with higher fees to renew their CUAs. Per a letter by Ramos in October, the department is increasing the 2019 rate to a flat fee of $550. Come 2020, that fee jumps to $850 to further close the gap in an effort to build and sustain a “solid CUA program moving forward,” Ramos stated.

While some are expressing issue with the fee increase, others say the cost could have been much higher.

“It could have been $1,000,” Capt. Steve Friedman, Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association commodore, told fellow guides during a recent meeting. “The fact is it’s hard to swallow when they changed the definition of what the CUA program is. It’s hard to swallow when they say, ‘We should have charged a lot more than before, but weren’t, so now we kind of have to make up for it.”

ISLAMORADA, MARATHON YET TO RECEIVE FEMA REIMBURSEMENTS FOR IRMA

A

lmost 16 months after Hurricane Irma slammed into the Keys, two local municipalities have yet to be reimbursed anything from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Although Marathon and Islamorada have a FEMA stamp of approval designating some of the expenditures as “obligated,” the ball is with the state’s Division of Emergency Management, where it has rolled to a stop. The two-step process is proving problematic.

The City of Marathon estimates the storm damage at just under $34 million. It has submitted $22.9 million to the feds and is awaiting action from the state. Last week, in an opinion piece, Marathon Mayor John Bartus had strong words for the former state DEM director, Wes Maul.

“Inept is one of the nicest things I can say about his job performance. Thankfully, Maul has resigned, and hopefully a new administration will lead to a new DEM direction. Time will tell,” Bartus wrote.

Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis has announced that state Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Coral Springs, will serve as director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management. Moskowitz is an elected member of the state House of Representatives in the 97th District, which includes northern Broward County. Moskowitz’s credentials for the position include serving as general counsel for AshBritt Environmental, a disaster management company.

The Village of Islamorada is in the same situation as Marathon. Both municipalities submitted the bulk of the costs associated with debris removal and emergency protective measures. The president and Congress authorized immediate 100 percent reimbursement funds for the first 30 days post-Irma, with the expectation that immediate needs would be immediately funded.

When that didn’t happen, the City of Marathon took out a $10 million line of credit to cover its costs. But major projects — like the reconstruction of Sombrero Beach — cannot proceed until FEMA reimbursement comes in, city staff said.

“The city has more expenditures to submit, and in some cases recovery projects have stopped due to a lack of funds,” said Marathon’s Finance Director Jennifer Johnson.

FEMA and the state DEM have reimbursed Monroe County and the City of Key West for some of their expenditures.

Monroe County has $6.5 million in hand, and Key West has $1.9 million. That’s not quite 16 percent of the costs the government agencies submitted for damage that occurred 15 months ago.

That’s progress from the situation Keys governments faced six months ago. In June, the Weekly reported that only Monroe County had been reimbursed at all and the total received was $1 million.

“So of the $35 million in requests, we’ve received about a million?” asked Mayor David Rice of Monroe County Finance Director Tina Boan at the end of June, to which she replied yes.

Marathon Received $0 of $22.9 million submitted to FEMA. Islamorada Received $0 of $8 million submitted to FEMA. Key West Received $1.9 million of $9.5 million submitted to FEMA. Monroe County Received $6.5 million of $43.8 million submitted to FEMA.

In May, Tidal Basin consultant Bill Slater told the county a “perfect storm” has led to the slow reimbursement. FEMA rolled out a new delivery model last year just as it was being overwhelmed with submissions from several major hurricanes and wildfires across the country and Puerto Rico. The state of Florida also decided not to expedite FEMA funding and instead is requiring 100 percent validation before sending FEMA money to local governments, Clark said.

“They used to expedite 50 percent of the claim, and then figure it out later,” said Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi in March on the advance of “upfront” money, “but they are not doing that any more.”

HALFWAY THERE CANAL CLEANUP ON SCHEDULE, UNDER BUDGET

T

he $49.2 million Monroe County project to clean canals of hurricane debris has passed the halfway point and remains under budget.

So far, 91 of the approved 172 canals — 53 percent — have been cleaned.

The project is on schedule to meet the 220-day grant deadline of March 21, 2019, and so far has spent $11.9 of the available $45.8 million, in unincorporated Monroe County, Islamorada and Marathon. ($3.3 million of the $49.2 million total is for monitoring services.)

The project is funded with an Emergency Watershed Protection program grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. The NRCS approves which canals can receive the grant funding.

Nine crews have been working in six geographical parts of the Keys called Damage Survey Report (DSR) areas. The debris is being taken to debris management sites before being hauled to Homestead for disposal.

Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental was hired by the county to lead the cleanup. The firm and subcontractor Arnold’s Towing of Stock Island have a combined workforce of about 60 people committed to the project using four grapple trucks, five sonar boats and 15 barges.

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions Inc. is monitoring the work.

The state originally hired DRC Environmental Services, which pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project.

The project includes $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe County, $7.5 million for Marathon and $6.5 million for Islamorada.

Information on the cleanup, including a master schedule and the list of canals, is at monroecounty-fl.gov/ irmacanalcleanup. The master schedule is best viewed on a computer due to the amount of detail included.

EXPERTS LOOKING TO MITIGATE DISEASE OUTBREAK

he research and work in the wild continue in a bid to mitigate impacts related to coral disease along the Florida reef.

Dr. Abigail Clark, staff biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory, said there are several different types of coral disease that historically impacted the reef track in the Florida Keys.

However, the current outbreak as it relates to stony coral tissue loss disease is unlike anything scientists and experts have seen before.

In South Florida, Clark said, it was discovered in 2014 off the shores of Miami-Dade County. It spread north as far as Martin County. Clark said it’s so devastating that it impacts 20 species of stony corals and can cause up to 100 percent mortality.

“It’s not only broad in species, but it also moves at a rapid rate — again unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” she said. “Since the onset in 2014, it has spread quite a bit of distance.”

While its progression has slowed a bit in the Keys, Clark said it’s in their backyard at Mote and just west of Looe Key. The only areas not impacted so far are the lower regions of the Keys and Key West.

“They’re in a vulnerable zone, but it hasn’t experienced disease down there,” she said. “It’s pretty record-breaking in that it has traveled such a long geographic distance this past four years.”

Clark said scientists don’t yet know the disease’s origin. However, it’s believed that corals are already stressed, given the gamut of effects like pollution and freshwater runoff.

“It’s a multi-factorial cause that started this disease,” she said.

There’s a strong and inspired group of researchers and managers who are working to treat corals faced with disease in hopes to restore the reef. Clark said they recognize they can’t stop it, but they can mitigate the impacts, noting that promising treatment options were discussed during the first coral reef symposium at Ocean Reef in December.

The gathering brought scientists and groups from around the world to provide several updates from on researched-focused efforts.

Locally, there are several initiatives underway, including antibiotic treatment testing in the lab with trials looking promising.

Clark said researchers are taking information and applying it to colonies in the wild.

CORAL DISEASE TIMELINE • Fall 2014: Isolated sites with significant coral disease were reported near Virginia Key (Miami-Dade County) • Fall 2015: Widespread disease was confirmed as far north as Pompano Beach and down to Biscayne National Park.

• Summer 2016: The disease continued to spread to Palm Beach County to the Upper Florida Keys (Lower Matecumbe).

• Spring 2017: Reports of widespread disease were confirmed as far north as St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County and to the southern boundary of the Upper Florida Keys.

• Spring 2018: The disease expanded into the Lower Florida Keys.

o doubt, firefighters are heroes. Who hasn’t seen photos of a first responder carrying a scared kitty to safety, or giving mouth-to-mouth to a small dog? But an endangered Key deer fawn? That’s a four on the magnitude scale of cuteness. Monroe County Fire Rescue’s Jen Shockley made headlines on April 22 during the wildfires on Big Pine Key. “I jumped into the flames and saved the little guy,” Shockley said. “He was all by himself and running for his life into the fire.”

News channels from ABC and CBS, plus USA Today and Miami Herald, picked up the story and ran with it.

t’s one of those things that mainlanders just don’t understand. “No molestar las conchas!” In July, a Texas woman was sentenced to 15 days in prison for taking 40 Queen conchs from the waters of the Florida Keys and transferring them to buckets filled with water in the front driveway.

It is illegal to harvest the shells, which contain a living organism. Although Florida is a huge consumer of conch fritters, the delicacy is imported from the Bahamas.

News outlets as far away as Dallas and New Orleans reported on the thievery.

mainlander made history in late June when she became the first woman to cross from Cuba to Key West on a standup paddleboard. Victoria Burgess — a Pompano Beach Fire Rescue inspector — made the trip in under 30 hours and, in the process, became a Guinness Book of World Records winner. There are 267 SUP (Stand Up Paddle) records, but Burgess is the first woman to make the crossing between the islands on a stand-up board. In an exclusive interview with the Weekly, she said: “It’s all mental and I did that training — yoga and relaxation. I get in a zone. I did have a struggle about an hour after it got dark, but I made myself keep going. I kept telling myself, ‘This is what you’ve been practicing for.’

And having the right nutrition helped, too.”

Other journalists couldn’t wait to tell her story, too, including a bunch of glossy magazines devoted to the sport.

n June 22, an oarfish was found floating off the Lower Keys. According to Capt. Ian Fannin, the 10-foot fish was barely alive. The captain, who works at Sea Base, immediately transported it to Mote Marine Laboratory’s Dr. Rob Nowicki and it was then forwarded to the Marine Vertebrate Collections of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California.

“This is an under-studied group of fish,” said Allison Delashmit, who handles public relations for the lab.

“It’s extremely unusual to find.”

Fun facts about oarfish: • The flesh has the consistency of gelatinous “goo.”

• The fish inhabit open ocean, in depths ranging from 660 to 3,300 feet.

• They don’t eat people.

• They are likely the origins of the “sea serpent” myth common in many cultures.

Mote Marine Laboratory published the story in its newsletter, and it was picked up by online sources like floridagofishing.com.

BASHINSKY TAKES IMPORTANT PHONE CALL AT DEBATE

n July 23, Key West mayoral candidate Sloan Bashinsky “took a phone call from God” during a Hometown debate in Key West.

In the “conversation” he told the Almighty that he, too, thought cuts to the Boys and Girls Club funding was crazy. A perennial candidate, Bashinsky did not win the election. He netted 50 votes in the seven-way race. Teri Johnston was elected to the post in the November runoff.

ecember is known as the holiday season and winter began the 21st. As a result, everybody has been rushing around shopping and holiday frolicking. This has left the waters around the island chain quiet and some of the best fishing to be found has been going off.

Bellinger has a live out there. A monster catch was on fishing report that the vessel My Sea Cin with Capt. airs daily on three Raymond Biaz at the helm. Anradio shows on two stations in the gler Stephen Careling caught a 76.6-pound Kraken of a wahoo!

Offshore here in the Upper Keys has been very productive from the patch reefs on out to the 200-foot depths. Snappers, progies and cero mackerel dominate the reef bite and remember, hogfish are closed to harvest.

For those of you who like grouper dinners, keep in mind that harvest closes Jan. 1. Sailfish, blackfin tuna and dolphin are the big three being caught on a regular basis beyond the reef and you won’t have to go much past 200 feet of water. Patch reef in the shallows are a great place to fish in the wintertime. North to northwest winds leave the patches in lee of the wind and you can fish in comfort here when the wind gets going.

The Everglades National Park and Florida Bay have been very productive in places throughout the area.

There has been a very surprising influx of redfish and snook along the mainland portion of the bay. These fish are smaller rat reds and the snook are mostly sub-24-inch fish. You won’t find them in every location out there but if you find a few, set your Power Pole and work the area over hard. Live shrimp on jig heads or a knocker rig work every time. The boys who pole the flats are doing well sight fishing reds and snook out back and small tarpon have been good in out of the way waters too. Bonefish are wildly popular and there have been good numbers around the oceanside flats lately.

This week is going to be very busy throughout the Keys. I can’t stress enough the fact that you’ll have to make reservations for dinners and any watersport that you intend to do. If you find a boat available book it! As I write this article I have a few openings available at BambooCharters. com for backcountry fishing after Dec. 28.

gidi Cressi, an Italian skin diving enthusiast, donated a nine-foot bronze statue, today called the Christ of the Deep (not Christ of the Abyss), to the Underwater Society of America. That statue, the third bronze casting of the original sculpture created by Guido Galletti, was passed on to the state park system where it eventually found its way to the Coral Reef Reserve. The Coral Reef Reserve was renamed John D. Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in honor of the man who worked diligently to create the largely underwater park when it was dedicated on December 10, 1960.

Today, the statue is the single most photographed image on the Florida Reef and rests comfortably beneath the turquoise waters at Key Largo Dry Rocks. To help ensure the statue’s stability, it was reinforced by a concrete base. The nearly 20,000-pound combination of statue and base was tested by Betsy, a Category 3 hurricane that struck Key Largo on September 8, 1965. The statue did not budge.

The Christ of the Deep was formally dedicated by John Pennekamp on June 29, 1966.

In the first phase, $50 million is earmarked for Monroe County homeowners to rebuild, repair and elevate their homes due to damage or destruction caused by Hurricane Irma.

This funding is a grant, not a loan.

More than 950 households have registered for the assistance in Monroe County. And, more than a third of those households already have met the priority applicant threshold and have been issued applications to move forward in the process, according to DEO. In Monroe County, 1,179 homes were destroyed, with another 2,977 suffering major damage from Hurricane Irma, according to the Approximate Damage Assessment report.

To be eligible, homes must have suffered damage from Hurricane Irma.

The program is for households in the low- and moderate-income levels. For example, the income limit for a household of four people is $105,840. More Monroe County income ranges can be found at www.monroecounty-fl.gov/ rebuildflorida.

Priority will be given to the most vulnerable households with seniors age 62 and up, with children under the age of 18, those with special needs or special accommodation requirements (including disability), and those displaced from Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands who are permanently resettling in Florida.

BALLOT BATTLES TOP POLITICAL STORIES OF 2018

A

braham Lincoln once said “the ballot is stronger than the bullet,” and 2018 was a year of tight races and tough competition — from the Florida Keys to the nation’s capital. We had tight regional upsets, as well as heated mayoral campaigns, culminating in the election of iconic Keys women Mayor Teri Johnston of Key West and Michelle Coldiron of Marathon. Johnston and Coldiron beat competitors Margaret Romero and Tommy Ryan, respectively. Who else flared up on our political radar in 2018?

STATE REPRESENTATIVE SEAT: RASCHEIN OVERCOMES FRIEDMAN Moderate Republican Holly Raschein came under criticism as Democratic fishing charter Captain Steve Friedman took her to task on her environmental record and loyalty to special interest groups. Raschein fired back with her victories in affordable housing and the Stewardship Act (which secured funding for water projects).

Raschein ultimately kept her seat for a fourth term, taking 53 percent of the vote to Friedman’s 46 percent.

NEWCOMER MUCARSEL-POWELL BESTS CURBELO In perhaps the biggest upset in Monroe County, Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell took the House seat from incumbent Carlos Curbelo, winning 50.7 percent of the vote to his 49.3 percent, in a key “battleground victory.” She also was part of a historic national victory: the 2018 election marked the first time more than 100 women will be serving in the House of Representatives. As reported by the Weekly Dec. 20, Mucarsel-Powell has already visited Key West to discuss her stance on hot-button issues like gun control and immigration.

SLIM MARGIN: DESANTIS BEATS GILLUM Andrew Gillum swept into Florida, igniting Democrats’ dreams of the second coming of Obama, with his easy rhetoric and optimistic charm. However, Gillum’s campaign was upset by Republican Ron DeSantis, who ran on a platform about bolstering the economy and education while tightening up on immigration. The race was incredibly tight and was one of three elections that were subject to a statewide recount. Ultimately, DeSantis took 49.6 percent of the vote to Gillum’s 49.2 percent.

THE (LATEST) FLORIDA RECOUNT The recount itself was a big political story of 2018, though ultimately the results were confirmed. Florida yet again made national headlines, with stories of emailed votes and overheated voting machines compromising the integrity of our elections. There was a machine recount followed by a hand recount, presided over in Monroe County by Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin. Most examined? The Senate race, in which Gov. Rick Scott was reported to have defeated incumbent Bill Nelson in Monroe County by only one vote: 18,021 to 18,020.

PRESIDENT TRUMP VISITS THE KEYS While President Trump has been called many names that we won’t print here, he stands as Commander in Chief of the United States, and his trip to Key West in April was subject to much scrutiny. Trump was the first sitting president to visit Key West in 55 years, and his trip was motivated by a meeting with the Joint Interagency Task Force South, which battles drug trafficking. The president was greeted by the cheers of adoring fans, as well as protest signs from critics. He said of his trip to Key West: “It was an education.”

MOST PUBLICIZED AMENDMENT OF THE 2018 ELECTION: AMENDMENT 4 Floridians voted to reinstate voting rights to convicted felons who have served their sentences. Despite being approved by 64.6 percent of state voters, Governor Ron DeSantis is delaying it going into effect until lawmakers pass “implementing language.” When enacted, the amendment will extend (or reinstate) voting rights to some 1.4 million Floridians.

A RINGING GIFT

W

hen the charter boats come home at the end of the day, it’s tradition to ring the big brass bell. After Irma, however, the bell fell silent.

It was one of the casualties of the storm and nowhere to be found as the staff of Wahoo’s Bar and Grill — part of Whale Harbor Group — was putting the eatery back together. But roughly two weeks later, there was a new bell installed. And it came from Holland, courtesy of Rob and Monique Schuitema.

They were visiting the Keys in May and stopped in at Wahoo’s for a bite to eat. It was then when they overheard talk at the bar about the missing bell. Schuitema had been given a brass bell as a retirement gift after he retired from his job with “Rijksrederij,” a department within Holland’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. His department managed about 100 ships and 400 crewmembers on the seas and in the canals.

Schuitema said he was so struck by the similarities between Florida and the Netherlands that he ended up offering the bell to replace the missing one. In a matter of two weeks, the bell was on its way to the Keys.

M

ote’s Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration brought much entertainment and exploration in its first event in the Upper Keys.

Held at Founders Park, the day featured nonprofits, food and drinks as well as a scavenger hunt, music by four bands and a live painting by Pasta Pantaleo. The festival showcased the treasured marine environment while raising awareness for coral reef research and restoration.

Festivalgoers had the opportunity to explore conservation and environmental exhibits, meet live animals, experience touch tanks and more. Children practiced their casting and climbed a rock wall.

SOLDIERS RIDE

W

ounded Warriors made their way through the Upper Keys with the solider ride. A total of 45 wounded veterans participated in the event. Participants made their way through the Upper Keys, stopping at Key Largo’s VFW Post, Coral Shores High School and Theater at the Sea in Islamorada. The Upper Keys section of the ride spanned 17 miles.

DOLPHINS LEND A HAND

W

ith a little help from the Miami Dolphins and their partners, Ocean Studies Charter School received a new playground. Roughly 200 volunteers came to lend a helping hand. For many schools like Ocean Studies Charter School, the priorities following the storm were recovery and relief. Fundraising for a new playground, which was removed before the storm due to safety reasons, was sidelined. Then KaBOOM!, a charitable organization dedicated to building playgrounds, stepped in. With ideas from students, KaBOOM! and the Dolphins Foundation came down and built for a day. The playground is 1,800 square feet and divided into two parts. Along with the playground, an educational garden and 600 square feet or artificial turf were installed.

HARRY HARRIS OPENS

To the excitement of Upper Keys residents, Monroe County re-opened portions of Harry Harris Park in early February following months of closure after Hurricane Irma. Phase one of repairs was complete with the area south of the park’s boat ramp available for use. Months of work repairing the county’s parks were a team effort, said Robert Glassmer, Monroe County public works administrator for buildings, parks and beaches in the Upper Keys. Work began at Tavernier Settlers Park and Key Largo Community Park before attention was shifted to Harry Harris Park.

Today, the park continues to see pavilions filled, boaters launching off the ramp and kids playing on the beach. One of the things that awaits completion is the baseball field as county crews continue work.

TO THE RESCUE PUBLIX OPENS By interacting and connecting with the marine mammals at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder, visitors can help save their wild counterparts. Having recently earned its nonprofit status, DPMMR is highlighting its program to educate the public on marine mammal species, while expanding rescue efforts. The agency operates within 10,000 square miles of marine habitat from Cape Coral to Fort Jefferson over to Marquesas Islands and up to the southern edge of Biscayne National Park. Over the years, the group has responded to 648 marine mammal strandings.

Much to the delight of Islamorada residents, Publix Supermarket opened for business on May 24. The new, 20,000-squarefoot store has all the hallmarks that make the supermarket chain a preferred market for shoppers. About 125 employees were hired to launch the store.

“We want to support the community in any way we can,” said Store Manager Miranda Hendrix. “Publix always gives back.

HISTORY UNDER WATER

M

embers of Florida Public Archaeology Network teamed up with the History of Diving Museum to show local dive instructors the ropes in underwater historic preservation. History of Diving Director Lisa Mongelia said the program is an excellent way to impart the local community of divers with the knowledge needed to preserve hundreds of sites.

By targeting diving leadership, instructors, instructor trainers and course directors, the program is meant to have the knowledge of historic preservation trickle down from teachers to basic open-water divers.

Divers started off the with two classes on topics such as shipwreck case studies, underwater historic preservation, artificial reefs, federal and state laws, Florida’s tourism industry and other problems affecting underwater heritage sites.

“It’s a way to get the message out there to conserve the underwater natural environment,” said Della Scott Ireton, a maritime archaeologist for 25 years.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

A partnership among the village of Islamorada, Monroe County and Habitat for Humanity hit pay dirt with a groundbreaking on a new affordable-housing complex on Windley Key at MM 84.7.

Habitat Director Jack Niedbalski said the project is a great opportunity for many of the community’s hard workers to have a place to call home or a good place to rent.

The ground-breaking drew close to 100 supporters, from elected officials and business leaders to Habitat board members led by Chairman Doug Hill and Vice Chair Chris Trentine, who began researching the project more than six years ago. Today, construction continues.

fter Hurricane Irma ruined plans for the event in 2017, almost 200 swimmers came out to take part in the annual Swim for Alligator Light. Founded by local artist “Lighthouse Larry,” about 100 swimmers took part.

The swim began and ended at Amara Cay Resort. The event attracts swimmers from around the world and showcases the talent of local mermaids and mermen.

Yoelvis Pedraza of Boulder, Colo., finished the whole course in under three hours — 2 hours, 55 minutes.

Plans are already underway for next year’s swim. It’s scheduled for Sept. 14, 2019. More information is at swimalligatorlight.com.

WHAT GOES AROUND...

R

esidents of Plantation Key got together to help one of their own who was injured while trying to assist others. The Hard Knock Life Block Party on Sioux Street in Plantation Key on Oct. 13 was a benefit for Timmy Acre, 37, a local fishing captain who suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the box truck he was driving to the Carolinas overturned on I-95 in Jacksonville. The truck was loaded with bottled water purchased with cash donations from the Upper Keys community for victims of Hurricane Florence.

GETTING HIS WAY

C

ontributions to the Florida Sea Base and the community by Sam Wampler were recognized with the unveiling of Wampler Way. He served as director for the Florida Sea Base for 22 years from its inception to his death in 2002. Mike Johnson, Florida Sea Base general manager, said Wampler’s legacy is one of service and dedication to the Florida Keys and the Boy Scouts of America.

The Florida Sea Base began as the “Florida Gateway to High Adventure” in the mid to late 1970s as it provided sailing and diving programs from the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area to the Keys and Bahamas. Working with Boy Scouts and other organizations, Wampler realized an opportunity for young people to get out and enjoy ocean adventures. Scouts would meet Wampler at the dock, get geared up, get on a boat and come down to the Florida Keys. Scouts would leave at the end of the trip with a patch and mug.

Serving 30 young individuals during its initial run, the Florida Sea Base is expected to serve more than 16,000 participants in 2019.
