n Dec. 18, Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis, with Lt. Gov.-elect Jeanette Nuñez, announced the names of more than 30 advisors who will serve on the Transition Advisory Committee on Government Operations. The committee will be chaired by Larry Hart, Lee County tax collector.

Among the appointees is Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

He is the only appointment from the Florida Keys.

“I’m honored to be asked by Gov.elect DeSantis to serve on the Government Operations Transition Committee,” Lindsey said. “This is an important opportunity for our community to work with our state partners to make government better for Floridians. One of those areas is disaster recovery and rebuilding. Of critical importance for local governments is improving the process for FEMA reimbursement.”

The committee will advise the transition team as it develops its plan to implement DeSantis’ goal of ensuring that the most critical functions of government are operating efficiently.

DeSantis also announced that Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Coral Springs, will serve as director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management. Moskowitz is an elected member of the state House of Representatives in the 97th District, which includes northern Broward County. Moskowitz’s credentials for the position include serving as general counsel for AshBritt Environmental, a disaster management company.

In Marathon, newly elected City Councilman Luis Gonzalez named former Mayor and City Commissioner Mike Cinque to the planning commission.

“I think he’s very knowledgeable and can be a huge asset on the planning board,” Gonzalez said.

Cinque was a city commissioner from 2007 to 2013. He was defeated in his bid for office in 2014. Cinque replaces former Mayor Michelle Coldiron’s appointment of Paige Shiver.

Giving is going around “Sharing your spare” must be a Keys disease (“Local woman offers kidney to local boy” Dec. 13, 2018 Weekly Newspaper). I just donated my kidney Nov. 8 at Cleveland Clinic Weston to a total stranger. I have no idea who received it other than they are 59 years old and my kidney was flown to Madison, Wisconsin. I am feeling great!

My husband Peter donated his kidney to a stranger almost two years ago. He started as a non-directed donor through the National Kidney registry but once he was approved a niece of ours had a person at her church who needed a kidney. Peter was a match so he donated to her. I met Peter’s recipient’s husband the day after and the first thing he said to me was, “I don’t know if you realize, but your husband’s donation saved my family.” That is when I knew I had to donate my kidney to one of the 100,000-plus people who need one. It’s like I am on a sinking boat and have two life jackets. The guy who I don’t know sitting next to me doesn’t have one. What would I do? Of course, I would give him my spare!

I did my donation through the National Kidney registry. Which allowed me to participate in a chain where eventually five people will receive kidneys from strangers. The National Kidney register has many programs that allows a person to donate to a stranger and start a chain, donate and receive a voucher for a friend or family who may need a kidney in the future or just do a paired exchange. Check it out online at NKR.org.

Kidney donation is one way to give where you are actually saving a person’s life. After donation, I get up every morning thinking about a person who I don’t even know and how much better their life must be.

When I went in for my oneweek checkup there was another living donor being tested who lives and grew up in Marathon. So I got to thinking and that maybe donating your spare kidney is the new Keys disease.

Just writing to let you know about the new epidemic!

Grants make new playground possible Marathon Lutheran School and Early Childhood Center has a new playground. The school is a ministry of Martin Luther Chapel. A project like this requires a lot of planning, funding and coordination. The project was made possible by two grants totaling $40,000. One was from the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod Disaster Preparedness Grant and the other was The Save the Children Grant through Monroe County.

About Santa and that fire truck...

A couple of elves stopped by my office to advise that there had been a bit of commotion regarding the Christmas caroling this year. Seems that the fire department does not want to do it on Christmas Eve. Let me share a little history.

About 40 years ago, the volunteer fire department got a letter from Santa asking for some help — seems it was difficult for him to get his sleigh around down here without snow. Being able-bodied volunteers and having recently acquired the old 1949 ladder truck, we launched an idea to decorate the truck, add music and tote Santa around on Christmas Eve to the various neighborhoods in town.

First year was just a handful of the volunteers and some family members. Well, the event was wildly popular. Year after year it grew, with many more people wanting to ride and more stops being added.

In its heyday, we had so many family and friends wanting to go that we added flatbed wrecker trucks behind the ladder truck to carry all the people. The music was broadcast by a local radio station so all vehicles could have the music in sync. It became an annual tradition that thousands of people looked forward to and enjoyed. More importantly, it became the way we celebrated Christmas Eve because we were with our families, and with our friends, and we were able to bring happiness and joy to many on that night.

Hundreds of folks gathered at the numerous stops around town.

It’s one thing for a kid to see Santa at the shopping center, but when he pulls up on Christmas Eve on the fire truck and gets down and hugs them and gives them candy, the look in their eyes is priceless. It is a memory that many locals and tourists will not forget. They go away that night knowing that Marathon is a great place.

When Marathon became a city, the old ladder truck became the property of the city, but they allowed a group of the old volunteers to utilize it for things like the Christmas caroling and the Homecoming parade, etc.

As the story goes on, about 10 years ago, give or take, the Grinch (City Attorney) got involved with our annual tradition and everything started to go downhill. First it was: we had to have insurance waivers signed by everybody who rode the truck, then it was only a certain number of invited guests could go, and then there was an age limit put in place. It was quickly becoming much less enjoyable and many family members and friends could no longer go. The “tradition” was being consumed by bureaucracy.

Prior to Irma, the old ladder truck had been given back to the volunteers by the city. It suffered a mechanical issue which took it out of service. We were unable to have it repaired for last year as everyone was covered up tending to storm related issues. Last year the city fire department stepped up to the plate and handled the task of delivering Santa around town.

This year, they don’t want to do it on Christmas Eve, and frankly I can understand that — the rules have made it so difficult for non-city employees to ride on city vehicles. They can’t take their friends and family with them like we used to do and it does seem unfair that we demand that they do it. If they wanted to do it, they would. The difference is that we all did it because it was fun and we were with our families and friends, and that is how we celebrated that evening.

God willing and with a little co-operation from Mother Nature, we will be working to bring the old ladder truck back to life, and if we succeed, the tradition will continue. Wish us luck.

Special concert raises funds for MCT On Saturday, Dec. 22, the Marathon Community Theatre will host the second annual benefit concert — Florida Keys Guitar Summit. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will be holding its next Citizen’s Police Academies starting in February and is are looking for people who are interested in learning more about law enforcement and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Classes will begin the week of Feb. 5 and will continue through graduation the week of March 14. There will be three separate academies held during that time — one each in the Lower, Middle and Upper Keys.

GABBIN’ WITH GRISWOLD IN THE KEYS

T

he Florida Keys, and more specifically, the Lower Keys have long served as an escape for former professional athletes, artists, public figures, screwballs and those who have danced with a low to moderate celebrity. Long before social media, Amazon Prime and the 2008 financial crisis, an executive with an industrial chemical company made national headlines when a botched kidnapping on Christmas Eve forced Main Street executives to re-examine their holiday bonus practices. Since retiring to Big Pine with his wife Ellen, Clark Griswold has advocated for safer sewers, solar energy and the restoration of old-fashioned Christmas traditions.

You were recently honored by Keys Energy Services and the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners for “Light Up the Lower Keys.” The initiative encourages residents to install energy-efficient LED lighting. How did you come up with the plan and what was your biggest challenge?

Lights on a strand are a beautiful and elegant way to showcase your holiday spirit. Anyone who uses one of those $25 projectors to light up their homes is a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d*&^less, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, wormheaded sack of monkey poop.

My biggest challenge was affixing the lights to the metal roof. Staples won’t work.

Your career in the food additive industry is legendary. Experts say the “Crunch Enhancer,” a non-nutritive cereal varnish, is one of those once-in-a-lifetime products with limitless applications. What practical uses have you found for it in the Keys?

It’s semi-permeable and not osmotic; like FlexSeal – only edible. I have found restaurants use it to keep fried mahi crunchy. It can also help keep the water out of your home if you are waiting on a building permit or insurance money.

Where did you evacuate to during Hurricane Irma?

Actually, we loaded up the RV and spent some time with my cousin Eddie in Canada. He ran into some legal problems recently but is working on securing his Canadian citizenship through his Canadian cousin, Joe Mitchell.

What is your favorite Christmas movie?

“Home Alone.” I love John Hughes’ flicks. I am hoping local filmmaker Quincy Perkins can find the time to remake it. That would be awesome. I also like “Seabiscuit” for the action.

If you could have drinks with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?

My old boss, Frank Shirley. After the Christmas bonus fiasco we became quite close. He tried to swim from Key West to Cuba but was eaten by sharks.

Swallowed whole or chewed?

Chewed.

What is your nerdiest passion?

I like skinny-dipping in random hotel pools.

What is your most treasured possession?

Family photo albums.

If invisible for a day in the Keys, what would you do?

Find out what kind of cheese they use in the fondue at the Square Grouper.

On what occasion do you lie?

I used to lie to Ellen about my feelings, but now I only lie to the Monroe County Property Appraiser and the Monroe County Building Department.

Airbnb is my best source of income.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

Eggnog and poolside bikini fantasies.

What job would you be terrible at?

Politics. But I would be one hell of a power forward for the Lakers.

he lighthouse located out at Sombrero Reef is called Sombrero Key Lighthouse for a reason. In J.W. Norie’s “Piloting Directions for the Gulf of Florida, the Bahama Bank, & Islands” (1828), he writes, “About 5 miles S. 1/4 E. from the west end of Cayo Vacas, there is a small sandy kay on the reef, called by the Spaniards Cayo Sombrero; this is the easternmost kay on the reef.” John Lee Williams, in his early account of Florida, described the small spit of land as, “the easternmost islet on the reef.

It is situated six or seven miles N.E. from Bahia Honda, and four miles S.W. from Knight’s Key, the western key of the Vaccas group. It is but a patch of rock, covered with a few mangroves and pieces of wreck.” It was not the original site of the planned lighthouse.

Work had initially begun at Coffins Patches Reef, but the work platform was destroyed by a hurricane on Aug. 29, 1856. Plans for the light were reassessed and it was decided to relocate the light to its current locale nine miles to the south. The chosen area was also known as Dry Bank. In 1857, the United States Light House Board issued a statement announcing, “The most important lighthouse structures underway in this district are the Dry Bank lighthouse … and the first class masonry tower at Dry Tortugas.”

After the ‘Breakfast with Santa,’ there was a lot to do: children could walk the “Cake Walk” for the homemade pies, cakes and cookies, do crafts or pick out a book from the Book Fair. As always, the helpers were there to assist them with the “secret shopping” in a kid-size shop with kid-size price tags for their parents or grandparents. Proceeds from the PTO’s silent auction of gift baskets will fund field trips and purchase supplies for the classrooms.

Dear Santa,

First off, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to type up the Dear Santa letters from fourth graders in the Keys. I think I’ve done it every year since I moved to the Keys 24 years ago. Fourth graders, I’ve discovered, are the perfect age: old enough to be creative and young enough to spell with reckless zeal. More on that later.

In the early years, I discovered some creative Jesus-Santa hybrid myths; read spontaneous admissions of guilt over a misdeed blamed on a younger brother; and was shocked by pleas from youngsters who only wanted Santa to bring mom some new underwear.

This was, of course, before I ever had children. I made a mental note to call the future teachers of my future children because I was certain that MY kids would be the type to publicize the state of my undergarments as well.

To my knowledge, Audrey and Rachel never did such a thing, but once Rachel put a fake scorpion under the covers at the foot of the bed so I hope, Santa, you remembered to put coal in her stocking THAT year.

Rachel (from her bedroom, hearing the shouting from the master bedroom in the middle of the night:) Is everything okay?

Me: Yes, honey. I found a scorpion but your dad is going to catch it, so everything is okay. Go back to sleep.

Rachel: … it … it might not be real …

Me: … Rachel, you are so dead right now.

Which is to say, Santa, that kids are kids. When they are super little, they are so overwhelmed by a scary, giftwrapped package. Alternatively, they just want to eat the paper and play in the empty box. As they get a little older, they start making lists in earnest. And, Santa, sometimes they make outlandish requests, but I have changed the way I’ve come to think about some of the things “kids these days” want for Christmas. I no longer believe that this is some gross, over-consumerized (is that a word, Virginia?) demand. Kids who can list every single top-shelf, SARA brand-name toy on the market, probably have pretty MATTHIS stable home lives … so for that, Santa, I thank you.

But Santa, could you have a word with today’s toythinks commumakers, or at least the marketers in charge of naming nity journalism the products?

This year, I had to look up “Moj Moj Claw is important, but Mechine,” and “Scruff A Luv” and “Wrapples.” Also, there’s not serious; likes weird and wona YouTube Channel star named JoJo Siwa in case you’re derful children not familiar with her work. For your convenience, Santa, (she has two). my designer, Javier Reyes, and I put together a quick referOccasionally she ence chart for you on page 22. tortures herself And then, Santa, there are letters that melt my heart. with sprint-distance triathlons, There’s an innocent girl that wants a “realistic” unicorn for but only if she has her little sister. Another wants you attend to her aunt and uncle’s request first and I can’t help but think they might still be homeless after Hurricane Irma. Again, that’s just supposition on my part, Santa, so if you could do some investigation, I would appreciate it. Let me know because the people of Marathon are amazingly generous.

And, Santa, I wouldn’t judge the students’ misspellings too harshly. Many of our Marathon kids are struggling to master a second language, English, so be patient with them. And the regularity with which EVERYONE misspells “clothes” by writing “cloths” suggests that Merriam-Webster rethink some of their choices. Santa, do you have an “in” over there?

Finally, Santa, would you drop me a note to let me know if you fulfilled the one girl’s request for 3 cups of contact lens solution and 2 containers of baking soda because I have questions. So. Many. Questions. Also, let me know if you fulfilled the boy’s request for a “for weelr so I can get in the woods and carey stuf that is hevey”? ’Cuz that kid is definitely going places that I want to go and I’m sure we could be friends.

It’s not that these hot toys for 2018 are out of the ordinary. In fact, they look remarkably the same year to year — usually very pink and very fuzzy. It’s just that every year at the Keys Weekly, we’re a little taken aback by the weird names. We can’t imagine what the heck it is and are forced to look it up. We’re guessing that our readers might find themselves with the same dilemma.

Here’s the cheat sheet.

WRAPPLES Remember the slap bracelets of yesteryear? Ok, it’s like that — but with a huge, hairy head on it. The “Little Live Pets Wrapples plush bracelet” also has light-up eyes that react to touch and it makes 50 sounds. Styles vary from Una to Princeza, but the nightmares are uniform in intensity. $15

SCRUFF-A-LUVS This is a great kind of gift to inspire a humanitarian drive in your children. But isn’t it weird that the animal comes, by the manufacturer’s own admission, “matted”?

That’s right, the toy comes as a mysterious ball of matted fur that must be soaked in water to reveal a puppy, kitten or bunny.

Still, it does introduce kids to the “satisfaction of rescuing animals.”

Alternatively, you can send your kids over to wash my old dog. She likes it. $20

L.O.L. SURPRISE DOLLS As an institution (newspaper) that is barely holding back the tide of acronyms like TY (Thank You) or ROTFLSHMSFOAIDMT (Rolling On The Floor Laughing So Hard My Sombrero Falls Off And I Drop My Taco), it’s a little disconcerting to learn that one of the hottest toys of the year is the L.O.L. Surprise Doll. Oh, and the only important word in the name is “surprise.” The best we can figure out, you drop a fizz ball into water which melts the ball to reveal the dolls that come with accessories. On a positive note, it comes with its own carrying case. (And if you didn’t just shudder, are you EVEN a mom?).

MOJ MOJ CLAW MACHINE Everyone’s familiar with the life-size arcade game where users spend $27 to “win” a $2 stuffed animal. (It’s never the iPad, is it?) This miniature device prevents that one rowdy and flexible 4-year-old boy from climbing inside the machine to retrieve his own toy and the ensuing public entertainment value.

However, this claw machine is fully functional and does comes with six surprises.

The containers can be refilled for an extra six minutes of fun. $50

’Asign Source recently hosted a holiday thank-you event for the Baptist/Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation Giving Society. The purpose of the festive evening was to recognize those who are financially supporting the new Fishermen’s hospital build-out. Delicious eats were provided by Chef Wes, carols were sung by the Island Harmony choral group and more than $120,000 was raised. The foundation has raised more than $9 million of its $15 million goal to support the re-construction of Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon.

he Marathon Lady Fins ended the first half of their season Dec. 13 with a 6 to 0 shutout over Riviera Prep giving them a 4-4 record. The Lady Fins have happily returned to their home field at Marathon High School after playing several “home” games at the municipal park due to hurricane damage at the high school.

Head soccer coach Kelley Struyf said that when the team returns from winter break, “we know what we need to work on and prepare for the districts.” The next game is at home Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019 against Palmer Trinity. I know you like the North Pole, but I’m very happy here living near the water with lots of sunshine and warm weather.

I have been a good girl this year (although I think we all have a little naughty in us that likes to pop up every now and again).

For Christmas this year, I have just a short list of wishes.

Some new playlists downloaded onto my phone for teaching Pilates class. (They take soooo long to create.)

A Key lime tree. I’ve lost two, now, to storms and am having a hard time finding one this year.

An invisible protective shield for my garden so the iguanas stop eating my plants!

I know you hear this a lot and it’s up to humankind to really make this happen, but I truly wish for worldwide kindness towards all people. (This is really my biggest wish!)

Say hello to Mrs. Claus who keeps you so well fed and jolly! And enjoy some R&R after your big night.

For Patrick Stevens and Rob Christensen, the ability to play a game of touch football against 9-year-olds without hurting themselves so bad they can’t come to the gym, or run a race.

Wait, Patrick never runs anyway, so the gym part for Patrick and race part for Rob. Sam Williams could use a shot of motivation, a little less standing around;

it’d be nice to see some effort out of him when he’s there. Allow Daniel Samess to be present in the class some time when that class wins a class competition, and help him understand hitting the snooze button five times does not count as five sit-ups in the 6 a.m. class. Give Joe Zajak the willpower to do a single burpee.

Please let Cara O’Neill get a competition partner after January as tough as her so that she does really well, she’s destroying her current one. Nelson could use the read “Channeling Your Inner Cat.” And for everyone else at the gym, an injury-free, personal best 2019; may their only bad workout be the one they didn’t do.

Oh, can you help me understand if it’s reps then sets, or is it sets then reps?

Dear Santa As you know, I’m a humble man of modest means who never toots his own horn. But I’ve been good, as good as gold. If I don’t say it, who will? The effort has been supreme. So far this year I’ve made 17 percent fewer obscene gestures in traffic, a personal low of 836 measly finger-flips for the year according to my court-ordered Geico Backwards-Facing Behavior Modification Camera. Who will keep other drivers honest, now that I’ve essentially given up the job? Civility will go to the dogs.

Your records will show I’ve worn what look like nodding, sympathetic faces when my children cry about the wi-fi going down or dropping popsicles in the dirt, even though in reality I’m dreaming about socking my boss in the ear in super-slo-mo, over and over. Please also note “honey-do” lists from my wife have been getting completed at an amazing

31 percent rate, a whopping 80 percent improvement over the prior fiscal year which few of my wife’s family had thought could possibly be beat. In short, I’m as deserving as they get and it’s only fair that you pay up. Here’s what I want, and it should be the work of a moment for you to toss these few meager things into your sack just before heading out into the storm: Two-dollar gas. This is not negotiable.

The name of the next Kentucky Derby winner, hopefully at 75-1 odds or better.

A case of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. More, if you happen to have a warehouse glut.

Magical pixie dust to sprinkle over people who say they “don’t eat fish.”

Zero hurricanes. Also non-negotiable.

Some sort of sauce that makes iguana meat delectable, in BBQ and honey-mustard.

Topics for people to yammer on about besides the president and the unrelenting sunshine.

Better driving reflexes for the elderly, infirm and my neighbor Jim, who I’ve rear-ended twice just this month.

Amnesia to the tax assessor concerning my new awesome hot tub with oak planking.

Modestly proportioned Honey-Do Robot for my wife with zero attachments.

Doubtless you may have noticed that some of these gifts are not just for me. Others have remarked upon my generous nature before. If these kinds of selfless requests count even more in my favor than this year’s already excellent Nice List Weighted Average and you’re looking for some way to even up the lopsided ledger, then let’s say $1.75 gas and a couple more cases of top-flight bourbon should make us all square.

LETTERS TO SANTA

Dear Santa First, I need to apologize for not writing for many Christmases. Please know, I have never stopped believing in you. Ok, maybe my faith faltered for a couple years, but as time has passed, I once again believe in the strength of what a chubby man in a red, velvet, furtrimmed suit who delivers presents for Christmas can bring to each of us.

Oh and by the way Santa, I think only you can pull off that suit! The “SNOW” white hair and beard really contribute to the complete image.

Please don’t listen to those disbelievers on Facebook and Twitter, who say differently; they just don’t understand North Pole fashion.

The big question you are going to ask: have I been naughty or nice? Well, everyone who knows me will say I have been nice, except maybe my husband.

You and Mrs. Claus surely know how it is when you’ve been together as long as we have — between the hot flashes and mood swings, each day can be an “adventure.” On the other hand, you and my husband do appreciate when Mrs. Claus and I are a bit NAUGHTY! To tell you the truth, Santa, overall I’m hoping you grade on a curve, then it should balance out.

So, my list is short but I sure hope you are able to bring them all.

1. Good health.

2. Sunshine, blue skies and calm seas.

3. Contentment.

A mute button for Chuck Lindsey to employ in the event of ridiculous council discussions – like the use of an old fire truck. If that is to much too ask for I would ask that you allow Marathon to get another year without a Hurricane and for all local business to prosper. My kids and wife Jamie have been provided with everything they need, so don’t worry about them.

Hurricane Irma tore this chain of islands apart. Many people are still struggling to just put some food on their tables, a present or two under their tree, and most of all, many of the families who live here are still without homes. Many businesses are still struggling to survive because the tourists stay at their vacation rentals or hotels and don’t bother with the “mom and pop” places. And the insurance as well as FEMA refuse to pay what is equitable and expected.

The money and the means are out there, Santa, sitting in government coffers collecting interest for the state, while those who need the relief are suffering greatly. My request to you, Mr. Claus, is to stop by Tallahassee and see what you can do to get the bureaucracies and politicians in our government to wake up and see the damage they are causing. Santa, how is it the aforementioned politicians, bureaucrats and the government itself receives all the gifts and the folks that need it get the coal in their stocking? I certainly hope no one switched lists on you, my jolly friend.

I thank you, Santa, for reading this letter. If you really are out there and can help bring these Keys back, help

the families and small businesses still devastated by the residuals of Hurricane Irma back, I would be very grateful. I know many of those whom I have mentioned would be pretty tickled too.

Be careful on your trip and if you stop by NJ’s and my casita, we need no gifts at our home. Just help these beautiful little coral islands become whole again.

I

t’s that time of year when kids of all ages make out Christmas lists — things they want, things they want to get for others. I remember with fondness the Christmases of my youth, eager in anticipation of what Santa would bring. I remember some of my famous Christmas toys: a GI Joe astronaut set with a full-size GI Joe in a Mercury astronaut suit complete with a scale model Mercury capsule the GI Joe would fit in … the really cool fire truck with lights that would also squirt small amounts of actual water … the Major Matt Mason moon station set …

HO train sets … bicycles … a lot of cool stuff for a kid growing up in the 1960s.

My parents really enjoyed making Christmas a big deal for us kids.

As I got older, Christmas changed.

Not that I ever got out of the Christmas spirit, but the gifts became a bit more personal and consequential — like my first guitar back in 1976. My perception of Christmas also changed as awareness of people in other situations increased. Not everyone was as fortunate as I was; the Christmas experience was a lot different for other kids.

And the true meaning of Christmas revealed itself with the understanding that giving is far better than receiving.

That being said, here’s some things I’d like to receive.

1. Civility in our political discourse.

Identity politics has become a game of extremes, with the vast majority of us who reside somewhere in the middle increasingly left out of the discussion.

I’ve written thousands of words about this over the years, and seen those words come to life via reams of paper and gallons of ink as well as digital characters portrayed on a CRT/LCD screen. Moderation and compromise have become dirty words to “true believers,” and politics is a dirty word by itself. True statesmen and stateswomen may help us find our way back into the light, provided they can rise above the uber-partisanship that exists today.

2. Good will toward our fellow humans. Headlines about the tragedies that befall us every day put calluses around our hearts, diminishing our capacity for empathy and feeling. The old Christmas quote promises peace on Earth to men of good will. It would be wonderful if we got a little closer to that goal every year.

3. FEMA reimbursement funds and individual insurance settlements to cover cleanup and damages from Irma. It shouldn’t take this long for FEMA, the state of Florida, Citizens, and other insurers to make local governments and policyholders whole. We pay our premiums on time, we do the things we need to do as local governments responding to a major disaster.

Our county and cities shouldn’t still be waiting for FEMA reimbursements, and our homeowners shouldn’t have to fight this long for a proper settlement.

One bit of good news is that Marathon’s city manager, Chuck Lindsey, has been chosen as a member of the new governor’s Transition Advisory Committee. Let’s hope he can open the eyes of Tallahassee bureaucrats to see how their (in)actions affect actual people.

4. Not losing any more of my musical inspirations and heroes. Over the past three years, we have lost far too many musicians and artists who made significant contributions to the musical art form. People like Tom Petty, Prince, David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Glenn Frey, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, Gregg Allman, Maurice White, Merle Haggard, Walter Becker, George Martin and many more. Many of these were still in their prime, with a lot left to say. Let’s take a few years off from the In Memoriam lists.

5. Happiness. Life can be a struggle, for some more than others. Try to find joy in the small day-to-day things (the big things as well), and hope the remnant joy carries us through the tough times.

That’s it for this year, Santa. I’m not asking for too much, am I?

Dear Santa As I ponder the reality of what I would like for Christmas I am sensing a great intimidation. What would I ask for if I knew you had the ability to make it happen? It would definitely be important to assess and measure the possibility of selfishness and greed on my part. Two things I have noticed are that we live in a great country and are recipients of prosperity and blessing. These facts can create the possibility where “needs become wants and then, if we are not careful, wants become needs.� Christmas seems to be for the children, but we adults become the beneficiary of a wonderful time in our society. I think what makes it special is that we are more concerned, or should be, about giving instead of receiving. Jesus did say it is more blessed to give than receive and I think this is the season to experience the reality of that truth.

Peace on earth and good will toward men are also wonderful possibilities. I guess if I would ask for a gift, it would be that we would love you God with all of our hearts, minds, souls, and strength, and also love our neighbor as ourselves unconditionally. I can only imagine a world where these two things are a reality!

This ugly Dumpster makes my nice clean yellow building look gross from the east. I can’t change it myself since it is not sitting on my property and it is rented by someone else.

Please see the photo I have inserted right here for you, just like I did last year: Marathon Garbage Service (great people) already sent you a brand new beautiful one to put here for me two years ago, and it has been sitting in your Elf Warehouse since then, waiting to be delivered by you on Christmas Eve. But your wimpy, lazy, lout guide reindeer Rudolph won’t deliver it down here to Marathon in the Florida Keys because he told Donder that the 700-pound weight of it causes too much drag on your sleigh and it may hurt his back. Ya, right. Rudolph had no problem pulling that gift Maserati convertible to Stormy Daniels’ house last year and that weighed five times as much as this Dumpster.

Please fire Rudolph and make Donder your guide reindeer. Donder says that he has a battery-operated nose light which attaches with Velcro to his real nose, which is pretty hip. It is much brighter than Rudolph’s red nose which has faded a lot since Rudolph has been on so much medication. Man-up, Santa!!!! Fire Rudolph and get me my Dumpster!!!!!!

Meal raises funds for recovery The residents of Marathon have come together to raise funds for Samantha Schofield, who was hit by a car in November. On Dec. 15, the American Legion hosted a pig roast dinner and silent auction put together by Joe Collins and Amanda Schofield. Samantha is doing much better and is currently undergoing rehabilitation therapy.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? Mistakes sometimes happen, but it’s never the end of the world.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I’m involved in National Honor Society and student government, but my favorite activity is drama. Starting as a freshman, I have now been in six MHS productions and I am an International Honors Thespian. I am grateful to be a part of something that allows me to do what I love.

What are your plans after high school? I have applied to UF, FSU and USF. I plan to attend one of these colleges after I graduate.

Though I have enjoyed living in the Keys, I don’t think I would make it my permanent home. I have always wanted to live somewhere that has more than a dry hot season and a wet hot season.
