The number of penguins in a secret “Super Colony” recently discovered in the Antarctic, according to livescience.com.

And, evidence suggests, the colony has existed for 3,000 years. For years, scientists had been visually inspecting satellite photos to identify the Adelie penguins, but when they began using an algorithm developed by a NASA employee, the colony in the aptly named and mostly inaccessible Danger Islands was revealed. The first hint, though, wasn’t the actual animals but their very pink poop. It’s science, baby.

DEBBIE MUCARSEL-POWELL ON THE ISSUES READY TO TAKE OFFICE NEWLY ELECTED CONGRESSWOMAN ALREADY AT WORK

A

n audience member began the questioning: “You have such a long name, what should we call you?” Without missing a beat, the newly elected congresswoman says, “Debbie.”

Engaging and full of humor, Florida’s new 26th congressional district’s representative entranced a large audience of Keys residents on Dec. 15 for “Coffee with Debbie” at The Blue Room in Key West. She conveyed her gratitude to voters and assured her intent at transparency as a new member of the U.S. House.

Beating out Republican Carlos Curbelo was no easy feat, but Mucarsel-Powell hasn’t slowed down and assured the

audience of her enthusiasm for joining Congress. Before being sworn in on Jan. 3, 2019, Mucarsel-Powell has already exchanged her heels for stylish but sensible boots and has been busy pounding the congressional pavement.

“The day of the election I wanted to connect with you, and say thank you.

Key West has always had my back, and your energy and passion put me over the edge,” said Mucarsel-Powell.

Before taking questions, MucarselPowell said she has joined one of the strongest, most diverse freshman classes ever in Congress and looks forward to the diversity of bringing new perspectives to government. With such a large group of new representatives, she feels they will hold a lot of leverage. Already she has been in meetings with fellow congresswomen and said, “I have met with and established a good relationship with Nancy Pelosi; she knows our needs.”

Mucarsel-Powell is getting involved in committees such as Transportation and Infrastructure, where she sees the needs of our district best being met, especially considering our particular environmental concerns. She will be joining the newly formed House Select Committee on Climate Change as well. Mucarsel-Powell says she is ready to start learning and establishing relationships with key people and “bringing progress to this district.”

Her goal will be to reach across the aisle to Republicans, and she admits she will make compromises if it means getting things done. After being sworn in, Mucarsel-Powell will be voting on issues the very same day. But aside from her three weeks on the Hill a month, she will have an office at The Gato building in Key West. “My office is open any time; no one needs an appointment here or in D.C. I want to be a resource for you.”

ON IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: “I will not be a part of the House Intelligence Committee or the Judicial Committee, but I will be very interested to see where Mueller’s investigation goes. We should be seeing results fairly quickly after Jan. 3. But everyone agrees the only way to move forward is with bipartisan support.

Both sides have to have enough evidence and that requires the Republicans to be on board.

We’ll see. We have entered a constitutional crisis.

But my concern is how do we go about impeachment without dividing our country even further?”

ON IMMIGRATION/ICE: “It hits me personally. I am very disturbed by the seven-year-old girl that just died in immigration custody. Right now I am not allowed, but I plan on visiting the Homestead detention center as soon as I am sworn in. I need to investigate ICE’s power and their abuse, which is being directed by top officials. It’s a very serious issue. Even now, I am looking into a different case in Monroe County with the help of Commissioner Heather Carruthers. We have to look at these cruel and inhumane policies.”

ON GUN VIOLENCE: “I have already joined the gun violence task force, but I don’t think it’s aggressive enough. I hope to pass gun reform in the first 100 days; going after military-style weapons and enforcing stronger background checks is a priority.”

ON HEALTH CARE: “I will first be looking into reducing the cost of prescription medication and the corruption in politics of health care.”

“It’s disturbing that Republicans haven’t stopped their attack on health care. (Regarding a ruling in Texas declaring the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional) we are going to take action and look into countering that lawsuit.”

ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: “My focus right now will be to finish the Everglades restoration. Also, greenhouse emissions is a big task to try and reduce by 2030. For us, I think if we invest in green energy, bring it to our district, it will help boost the economy.”

ON AMENDMENT 4 IN FLORIDA: “Governor-elect Ron DeSantis has no power to overturn Amendment 4. Everyone can register to vote Jan. 8.” DeSantis has tried to delay Amendment 4 from going into effect, allowing ex-felons to register to vote. It was approved by 60 percent of voters and goes into effect Jan. 8, 2019.

GABBIN’ WITH GRISWOLD IN THE KEYS

T

he Florida Keys, and more specifically, the Lower Keys have long served as an escape for former professional athletes, artists, public figures, screwballs and those who have danced with a low to moderate celebrity. Long before social media, Amazon Prime and the 2008 financial crisis, an executive with an industrial chemical company made national headlines when a botched kidnapping on Christmas Eve forced Main Street executives to re-examine their holiday bonus practices. Since retiring to Big Pine with his wife Ellen, Clark Griswold has advocated for safer sewers, solar energy and the restoration of old-fashioned Christmas traditions.

You were recently honored by Keys Energy Services and the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners for “Light Up the Lower Keys.” The initiative encourages residents to install energy-efficient LED lighting. How did you come up with the plan and what was your biggest challenge?

Lights on a strand are a beautiful and elegant way to showcase your holiday spirit. Anyone who uses one of those $25 projectors to light up their homes is a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d*&^less, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, wormheaded sack of monkey poop.

My biggest challenge was affixing the lights to the metal roof. Staples won’t work.

Your career in the food additive industry is legendary. Experts say the “Crunch Enhancer,” a non-nutritive cereal varnish, is one of those once-in-a-lifetime products with limitless applications. What practical uses have you found for it in the Keys?

It’s semi-permeable and not osmotic; like FlexSeal – only edible. I have found restaurants use it to keep fried mahi crunchy. It can also help keep the water out of your home if you are waiting on a building permit or insurance money.

Where did you evacuate to during Hurricane Irma?

Actually, we loaded up the RV and spent some time with my cousin Eddie in Canada. He ran into some legal problems recently but is working on securing his Canadian citizenship through his Canadian cousin, Joe Mitchell.

What is your favorite Christmas movie?

“Home Alone.” I love John Hughes’ flicks. I am hoping local filmmaker Quincy Perkins can find the time to remake it. That would be awesome. I also like “Seabiscuit” for the action.

If you could have drinks with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?

My old boss, Frank Shirley. After the Christmas bonus fiasco we became quite close. He tried to swim from Key West to Cuba but was eaten by sharks.

Swallowed whole or chewed?

Chewed.

What is your nerdiest passion?

I like skinny-dipping in random hotel pools.

What is your most treasured possession?

Family photo albums.

If invisible for a day in the Keys, what would you do?

Find out what kind of cheese they use in the fondue at the Square Grouper.

On what occasion do you lie?

I used to lie to Ellen about my feelings, but now I only lie to the Monroe County Property Appraiser and the Monroe County Building Department.

Airbnb is my best source of income.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

Eggnog and poolside bikini fantasies.

What job would you be terrible at?

Politics. But I would be one hell of a power forward for the Lakers.

ach year, The Weekly asks Key West tastemakers to take a moment out of their busy lives to write to the big guy in the sky — not God (we’ll leave that one up to you), but Santa Claus. Sure, one could argue that those of us working every day and raising families of our own are a little old to believe. But Key West is a place where anything is possible. Late Key West novelist David Kaufelt once made famous his “Peter Pan” theory of why Key West is so special.

He said, “I call it the Peter Pan theory. ... Freud said that we are at our most creative when we are in our very early youth, before we’re five years old. That’s where we are here.

We wear shorts, we ride bicycles, we have the water, a great symbol of the unconscious, and we’re free to be children here and let our spirits go.” This time of year, we might call it the “Santa Claus” theory. Key West is a place where you’re allowed to never grow up.

Enjoy these letters to Santa, whoever you may imagine him to be, and if you’re craving letters from real kids — we’ve got you covered. Principal Eli Jannes of Sigsbee Charter School was kind enough to corral letters from Key West kids, too. On the following pages, you’ll see Jannes’ letter, followed by selected letters to Santa from 3rd grade classes at Sigsbee. So ho ho ho to kids and adults alike, and a very Happy New Year!

Dear Santa,

t’s been a very long time since I wrote to you. So much has changed! I live in a place where it never snows now, and I love it. Do you still get snow where you are?

There’s not much I would ask for myself for Christmas. I am very lucky to have a home, a wonderful family and more friends than I can count. There are things that would be nice to have for the place where I live, though. The biggest would be a huge dome that could protect all of the Florida Keys from a hurricane. Another would be for FPL to retire their cooling canals. Another would be to finish Everglades restoration so our bay would be healthy again. One more thing would be for lots of new homes that people who live and work here all the time could afford to live in.

I guess I can think of a few things for myself: more sleep for one, and more days with less wind so my family could go out on our boat. Fewer executive tweets would be good, and more respect and civility just about everywhere would be awesome. I’d really love for my kids to grow up in a safer, simpler world like I did. Mostly, I wish for them to have a lifetime of love and happiness.

Dear Santa,

ince I was a kid, the holidays were a time to appreciate family. Here in Key West we are an extension of our given family and seem to create roots deep with those we have met. This one holiday request has never been so relevant to me but ALL I wish for is PEACE on Earth. More specifically peace with oneself.

See, Santa, Key West has been going through it since the hurricane last year. We’ve lost apartments, friends, work and a sense of control. Some of us fared well and others of us not so well. I wish for everyone to be fully recovered and if they are not ok, I wish them the will to tell a friend. It’s ok not to be ok, but we as a community need to stay together, love one another and help those see the light.

Dear Santa,

was shocked, surprised, and a little turned on when the Key West Weekly approached me about writing a letter to Satan. I was just re-reading the criteria and saw my mistake, but it’s not like I can cover myself in rooster blood and just go to sleep, so a letter to you will have to do.

The rumor about me being naked with the elves and a jack-in-the-box is fake news. Brown liquor has never agreed with me, but when they add cinnamon to whisky and give it a sexy name like “Fireball” it feels more like candy and I’m going to indulge my sweet tooth.

If you want to give Key West a few gifts, install tiny traffic circles instead of stop signs so bike and car drivers can hate each other less.

Turn the iguanas into something cute like monkeys, or at least give them hats. Can you splice parrot and dog genes so dogs live longer?

I don’t really want much for myself. Maybe a Key lime pie window in the 200 block of Duval, a gig hosting a paranormal show on the History Channel, someone to write books for me while Heather-May and I travel. Oh, and could you please have Jimmy Buffett record one of my songs? I could use socks too.

HOW DO WE SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS?

Yep, I said it. Let’s look at those things: a natural need for control and an unnatural impulse to spend boatloads of money. The first part doesn’t need much explaining: anyone who’s tried to take a toy from a toddler understands the deep-seated need for control. But the second part — the need to buy presents for all family and friends, the desire for the perfect “Hallmark” Christmas, the unspoken competition for biggest tree and best lights — that’s a little stranger of a tale.

The early church opposed celebrating the birthdays of martyrs, including Jesus, because birthday celebrations were considered a pagan tradition. But in 336 A.D., an early Roman calendar marks December 25th as Jesus’s birthday, likely in a bid for converts, as it coincided with pagan celebrations of the Roman god Saturn and Persian god Mithra.

But how did it become the carol-blaring, tree-trimming, giftgiving extravaganza of modern America? In our early Puritanical days, there wasn’t much celebration in the colonies. But with the

Industrial Revolution and influxes of European immigrants, we created a (totally charming) monster.

“A Visit from St. Nicholas” (aka “The Night Before Christmas”) was published in 1823 in New York, and the role of the Christian saint was evertransformed in sacred and secular contexts. The Pew Research Center reports that today, 93 percent of Americans celebrate Christmas, and Bloomberg News calls the holiday “an intense marriage between sentiment and commerce.”

So, long (Christmas) story short: in its contemporary iteration, it’s always been a commercial holiday — no offense to Jesus.

Regardless, how are we to make peace with the pressure to find perfect gifts and to make nice with our idiosyncratic families? We set ourselves up with sky-high expectations that are nearly impossible to meet, and there are variables that inevitably go wrong.

In Christmases past, my family has experienced: 1) a psychiatric episode 2) a divorce 3) a ceiling falling in (the water heater hates Christmas) and 4) the death of a beloved family pet, who was then eulogized over turkey … and tears.

(Okay, that one was Thanksgiving) But guess what? Every single episode has become family lore — a source of humor and gratitude for our shared, and survived, history.

My Christmas wish for you is to be easy on yourself. If you lose your wallet after too much eggnog, forgive yourself and call the bank.

If you get in a row with your significant other, say you’re sorry and reach for the nearest mistletoe.

And remember that a kind word or card goes further in measure of the heart than the shiniest new iPhone at the Apple store.

Or if your ceiling falls in, and water comes crashing into the living room, as ours did this year, take a cue from my 2-year-old niece, Eve. She came to the rescue with her new toy oar, from the movie “Moana.” She was ready to jump in, and go with the flow.

Maybe she knows how to navigate the holidays naturally because she was a Christmas baby.

He’s the one who brings presents and he does a great job.

The children looked pensive, then ran to the gate, Gathered close to the mailbox, and there they did wait Until Bob pulled beside them in his shiny mail truck Overflowing with presents – he said “Kids, you’re in luck!”

“I have Amazon, Target and Toys R Us too, There’s something from Apple and even JCrew.”

The kids were ecstatic and started to dance.

Some got so excited they peed i n their pants.

Bob smiled and said, “I’m just doing my job.”

Screw Santa. We’ve got Bob.

So the kids went inside with their new Christmas loot And there stood a man in a red and white suit.

“Who are you?” asked Johnny.

Santa turned with a pause.

“Merry Christmas young man.

My name’s Santa Claus.”

Johnny looked up but he didn’t believe: “I don’t know who you are but it’s time that you leave!”

Santa grew angry: “Why you little snob!”

Screw you, Santa. We’ve got Bob!

Disappearing Islands.

DRY TORTUGAS: ISLANDS COME AND GO

KEY WEST HISTORY

T

he Dry Tortugas exist in a somewhat constant state of evolutionary flux. George Gauld, a Scottish surveyor commissioned to map the Florida waters, was the first to name the islands individually on his 1775 chart. Gauld identified 10 islands: Booby, East Kay, Bush Kay, Middle Kay, Logger Head Turtle Kay, Rocky Kay, Bird Kay, North Kay, Sandy Kay and South West Kay. Since, however, some of those islands have disappeared. The names, too, have changed. Modern charts show the Dry Tortugas to be a collection of seven islands. The islands Gauld identified as North, Sandy Kay, and South West keys were washed back into the sea due to erosion caused by time, tide and hurricanes. Bird Key, once called Booby Kay, too, was blown asunder by a hurricane in the 1930s. Bird Key Harbor and Bird Key Bank are still marked on modern charts. The island Gauld first called Bird Key is now called Middle Key. Middle Key displays the most flux as the sandy gash of an island comes and goes, disappearing and then reforming, depending on the time of year.

about the fire department and airport, eat lunch at The Conch Flyer and receive a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

MARC (Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens), along with Keys Federal Credit Union, staged another spectacular Table Top Christmas Tree Auction at Margaritaville Resort. Holiday wreaths, rum, chocolates and — of course — pre-decorated & themed trees were

auctioned off to the highest bidders, with all funds supporting MARC. Florida Keys Community College President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra and wife Josephine hosted their annual Caribbean Holiday Party at the Tennessee Williams Theater this past week.

Guests and supporters donated toys and gifts to benefit Samuel’s House, while sampling homemade Caribbean eats.

Two Friends Patio recently hosted its 4th annual Keys Kringle to benefit Kids Come First. Dozens of support-

ers donated toys throughout the day, which was packed with live radio remotes, raffle prizes and tons of generosity for Keys children. The team behind the amazing productions at Key West Theater, as well as the crews of Salute and Blue Heaven, all feted a day off serving food and drink to others to do some wining and dining of their own. Only one more week of party time before we all promise to dry out and slim down in the new year.

BROADWAY HIT “PETER AND THE STARCATCHER” AT WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE

P

eter Pan: it’s a story everyone loves. Who can deny the power of being young at heart?

Certainly, not this town. “Peter and the Starcatcher,” now playing at the Waterfront Playhouse theater, is a modern take on the timeless story that pulls at our hearts and delights the stage. Meet young Peter, his band of lost boys, and an early Captain Hook dubbed “Black Stache,” with his delightful Smee, before Wendy and Tinkerbell even joined the party. Adapted by Rick Elice in 2011 from Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s 2004 children’s novel, the show eventually became a Broadway hit and won multiple Tony awards.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” is a full scale production with some of the most charming actors assembled on stage. The fantasy introduces us to orphan Peter, newcomer Dillon Feldman, and his new friend Molly, who is “insufferably bright” (Hint: she’s Wendy’s mother). Susannah Wells is Molly and magnificently holds her own as the only female character. The pair have a high seas adventure aboard the ship S.S. Neverland, encountering buccaneers, magical secrets, stardust, evil villains, orphans and a chorus full of mermaids. It’s a bedtime story that speaks to adults with the fond warmth and fascination of childhood imaginations.

Directed by Tom Thayer, the play’s breadth is evidenced by the immense choreography and scene after scene of multiple characters, each shining

brightly to great effect. Without a hiccup, at least an obvious one, Thayer chose his ensemble wisely for their versatility and comedic timing. Another newcomer to the playhouse, Alan Gillespie, charmed as “Black Stache”, a villain achingly fun to watch. John Reynolds as Smee was impossibly even more hilarious than his role in last year’s “The Legend of Georgia McBride.” Watch Alf, played by Bob Woods, and Mrs. Bumbrake, played

by Trey Forsyth, for their subtle and not so subtle merriment. Ross Pipkin and John McDonald never fail to carve out their own center stage. The 12-member cast pulled off dozens of roles, musical numbers and costume changes with great synchronicity and outstanding effort.

Michael Boyer excels again with striking just the right theater set in tandem with Kim Hansom’s lighting design. And Mary Folio’s costumes truly rival Broadway.

“I’m a fan of Peter Pan,” said Thayer, who is also the theater’s new artistic director. “I spent a lot of time preparing and thought it would be a great production for the Waterfront.”

nstead of eight tiny reindeer, there were more than a hundred (tiny, massive, and everything in-between) happy dogs on Higgs Beach on Saturday, Dec. 15. It was the FKSPCA’s 5th Annual Parade of Paws, starting with a blessing from Rev. Elizabeth Weinstock. There were plenty of four-legged friends in costume for the walk, and it was followed by a Holiday Bazaar, where local artisans and vendors displayed their goods. There was live music, food, photo ops with Santa and even a “Smooch a Pooch” kissing booth (yep!). Donations went to the Animal Care Fund of the FKSPCA. - Weekly staff report
