t’s a hot-button topic for a cold season: the annual tradition of the firefighters circumnavigating Marathon with Santa to greet the kids on or about Christmas Eve. On Dec. 11, it took nearly an hour to settle the matter, kind of, to everyone’s satisfaction, sort of.

Topics covered: the joy of the season; children’s shining faces; whether to do the route on Dec. 22 or Dec. 24; whether to do the route on Dec. 22 and add a “no stops zip” through the neighborhood behind the airport on Dec. 24; using volunteers versus using paid city employee firefighters; who can drive the “trucks;” the status of the volunteers’ “old truck” (not good); the “milk and cookie” stops; the heartmelting things Santa hears from kids; if one neighborhood is receiving preferential treatment over another; when Islamorada’s sleigh and sound system is available for loan; Facebook; and, finally, compromise.

Because the council doesn’t direct day-to-day operations, it suggested to City Manager Chuck Lindsey that the fire department carry forward with the plan that is already in place: Do the whole route on Saturday, Dec. 22. And, next year, come up with a solution to provide that service on Christmas Eve. In the meantime, Chief John Johnson

said he would solicit some volunteers for a quick get-together on Christmas Eve in the Winn-Dixie parking lot.

“I am going to ask some of the guys if they want to please help us,” Johnson said, “but I am not going to force them. If you force them, you’re not doing what this all about.”

In other news: • Mayor John Bartus led a discussion regarding the city’s building department and permitting delays.

He urged staff to “do what they can, legally, to interpret liberally on the side of the taxpayer and the resident.”

Councilman Steve Cook urged staff to hold the line, saying customer complaints are part of the natural circumstance this many months after a major storm. Councilman Mark Senmartin spoke about the city’s website as it relates to permits. “A man told me he had been waiting eight months for a permit. We checked the website and the permit had been waiting for him to pick up since June. He didn’t know.

His contractor didn’t know,” Senmartin said. Growth Management Director Doug Lewis outlined upcoming improvements: new software, resuming regular business hours, hiring more personnel and possibly contracting employees for the short term. As to customer service, Lewis said: “We look at the code as protecting all citizens.

We’re not looking at individuals and ‘is this a good deal for this one person.’ Are we damaging our rating with insurance companies? Are we putting ourselves in harms way? We have to weigh things back and forth. It’s a hard line to take.”

• The GEMS project — nine affordable units and six-market rate homes — on Aviation Boulevard passed the second reading of the conditional use and development agreement. The council approved the project, in part, because of the state’s agreement to fix the intersection at the corner of U.S.1 and Aviation Boulevard.

• The Sapodilla project, right around the corner, faced many objections from the council and neighbors.

It calls for 23 transient RV spots to be built on a spit of land located at the “bend” on the west end of Aviation, essentially a recreational vehicle resort. The planning commission had recommended the conditional use and development agreement forward to the council, plus a variance.

The project ultimately passed the first hearing, but not without added stipulations from council and a slide presentation from a neighbor alleging code violations. According to staff, all of the code violations have been rectified to their knowledge, and some after-the-fact permits have been issued.

“My concern is that the owner of the property isn’t responsible for what he has now,” said Betty Goodlow, who lives across the canal from the proposed project. “What is he going to do in the future?”

In addition to doubling the density (adding more landscape materials) of the reduced buffer, the council called for a mechanical obstruction (a wall) between the development and the neighbors across the canal. The council stipulated that RVs exiting the development must travel east to the intersection of 107th and U.S.1, rather than the Aviation and U.S.1 intersection. It called for the prohibition of generators. Plans to build a bathhouse in a recycled container trailer must be fully engineered.

Before the second hearing of the project, city staff will make courtesy inquiries to settle the debate about the owner of a portion of the property.

Old maps show Monroe County owns a “rectangle” that encompasses the airport and also the bend of Aviation Boulevard. Current appraisal maps show it is owned by Sapodilla Holdings.

• Lindsey’s contract renewal was approved. It follows the same format as the city attorney’s and doesn’t call for an increase in pay, but grants more vacation days.

Karen Thurman says hospitality is a ‘crazy addiction’

W

hen Karen Thurman moved to the Florida Keys 28 years ago, she was well on her way to becoming the Most Interesting Woman in Marathon. She set out to study microbiology premed at Texas A&M and also University of Oklahoma. She found herself at a crossroads after applying to medical school and, after careful consideration (probably not), decided to become an EMT in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands instead.

“But when I realized that my roommate was making, in one night, what I made in a whole week, I applied for a waitress job,” Thurman said. “They told me I was both underqualified and overqualified, but perfect as a management trainee.” True story.

In the Keys, she’s worked at Coconut Beach Resort, Fairfield Inn, the former “Cooper Hotels” (Econo, Comfort and Quality Inns), then DoubleTree, and the Islander in the Upper Keys. She’s done everything from sell time-

shares to regional director of sales to general manager – which she is now at Marathon’s Hyatt Place Faro Blanco Resort and Yacht Club. She also oversees operations at the Holiday Inn Express. Faro Blanco, though, is where she weathered Hurricane Irma, sheltering emergency workers and looking after her staff. In normal times, that’s about 100 souls.

(Her daughter, Karly, who also works in hospitality at The Islander in the Upper Keys, counted the number of storms they’ve weathered together: 25.)

Her practical and efficient management style quickly turned the Spottswood Company-owned resort into the hub of the community post-storm.

Thurman oversaw needs both huge and small. For her actions, she earned the Marathon Rotary Club’s Woman of the Year in 2017. She’s also received industry awards and was the first female president of one of Key West’s Rotary Clubs, and serves on the Marathon Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

Who is someone that inspires you? My mom, although she has passed. I still feel obligated to make something out of myself. Dammit. She was a 4-foot, 10-inch coon ass from Louisiana who could straighten you out in several languages.

What’s your nerdiest passion? I was a CBS weather watcher until just recently. But everybody kept sending in sunset pictures which was boring. But I got interested in weather after a particularly bad sailboat delivery from St. Thomas to the Carolinas.

I said, “I’m never going to trust some boy about the weather again.”

What’s your guilty pleasure? Ice cream. I don’t feel guilty about the red wine.

What lie do you tell most often? No, it never rains here.

What was it like growing up in Oklahoma? You’ve seen “Footloose?” It was like that. Dancing was a vertical expression of a horizontal desire and we were not allowed to do it!

What about hospitality appeals to you? I guess you could call it a crazy addiction. I ran my own scooter business for a while, but next thing I knew I was right back at it.

Any regrets about passing up a medical degree? Well, you know, hotels and hospitals have a lot in common. It’s a room with two little beds and a little table between them.

Was Irma your first storm?

Oh, no. I spent Irma reassuring everyone that it was going to rain very hard, the wind was going to blow, and after the storm there would be a lot of work.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I’m a certified pyro-technician.

Also, I spent years as the TDC mascot, the Conch; the costume was incredibly heavy. Also, I’m a member of the International Women’s Fishing Association. I like the aspect of the flats fishing because it’s more like hunting, you target your fish. Also, I was born without kidney tubes or fallopian tubes. I have silicone ones.

If you had to name a TV or movie character as your alter ego, who would it be? Batman.

When I was festival director of the Hemingway Festival and Andy Newman couldn’t reach me, he would call on my (then) teenager’s bedroom princess phone, which became the Bat Phone. I was Batman and he was Commissioner Gordon.

My 5-month-old grandson, Chase is … just a funny kid. (She clearly adores him and her social media posts are devoted almost solely to that little guy.)

Living in the Keys is like … small-town America, but much more liberal.

ike Islamorada, Marathon is an umbrella term used to designate an area occupied by a number of islands. In the case of Marathon, there are 13 — at least. Included among them are: Boot Key, Crawl Key, Deer Key, East Sister’s Island, Fat Deer Key, Grassy Key, Hog Key, Key Vaca, Knights Key, Little Crawl Key, Long Pine Key, Stirrup Keys and West Sister’s Island. It has been suggested that the name Boot Key be broken up to East Boot Key and West Boot Key, as were the nearby Sisters Keys identified in wrecking court documents dated 1842. An 1849 publication mentions the islands, sometimes referred to as East and West Sister Rock: “The two small islands S. of the Boot Ids. Are called the sisters.” The islands have not always been known as the Sisters.

A 1775 chart identified West Sister’s Key as Prickly Pear Key. Another-lesser known island in the Marathon area, a small island, was located east of Vaca Cut and called Bonefish Key. It has since become incorporated into Fat Deer Key, but has not been totally forgotten. Chicago’s Museum of Natural History has a collection of seashells in its inventory labeled as originating from Bonefish Key. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

Two things happened simultaneously.

First, Colleen Norman, 53, got the “five years, all clear” notice after her tangle with breast cancer. Then she saw an episode of American Ninja Warrior starring a young man who had donated a kidney to a friend. She reached for the phone and called Beatriz Moreira, mother of Anthony, 12.

Even before Anthony was born, doctors knew something was amiss.

He had two operations in-utero, and was born two months early. He has spent his entire life in end-stage renal disease. That means he’s never been in the ocean. He’s never been to school. He takes more than two dozen medications every day. He spends 12 hours a day on an at-home dialysis machine that keeps him alive but takes a toll on his other organs. His mom, Beatriz, quit work when he was born to become his full-time caregiver and homeschool Anthony and his brothers — Edward, 18, and JJ, 10 — alongside her husband, Joe Moreira.

The timing of the phone call from Colleen was crucial. Just days earlier, Anthony’s doctor raised the possibility of putting Anthony back on the organ transplant list, as he was healthy enough to undergo the surgery.

“The real hero is Colleen,” said Beatriz Moreira. “She is the one who started this Christmas miracle. It’s happening so fast. I keep asking myself, ‘Am I dreaming, or is this for real?’”

On Dec. 11, at 6 a.m., Anthony and Colleen went into surgery at Jackson Health System in Miami, each with their own surgical team. There’s just one catch — Anthony didn’t get Colleen’s kidney. It went to another patient in a similar, critical situation, who was a better match. A family member of that patient gave a kidney to Anthony, also a better match with fewer chances of rejection. On that day, four surgical teams operated in concert to transfer the gift of life, from two patients to two patients who need it very badly, in what’s called a “Pairing Program.”

“The ultimate thing is that Anthony gets a kidney. I don’t care who gets mine, as long as he gets one,” Colleen said, the day before the surgery.

Both Colleen’s family (she’s married to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office employee James Norman) and Anthony’s family have been on pins and needles since the offer. Colleen went through tons of testing — blood work, colonoscopy, EKG, ultrasounds, MRIs, MRIs on the kidney, and even a psychological evaluation. Anthony’s family has been working hard to keep him germ-free. Even a simple cold could derail the whole operation.

“He even asked the doctors if they couldn’t operate a day earlier. He said, ‘Can we do it today?’” Beatriz said.

The transplant will make a dramatic improvement in the life of Anthony and his whole family.

“I’m not going to call this a miracle, but this is a huge blessing however it happened,” said FWC Capt. David Dipre, a family friend. “This will honestly change their lives, Anthony and his brothers and his parents.”

And that’s how the kidney connection was made. Joe, Anthony’s dad, plays drums in a band with Colleen’s husband, James Norman, who plays guitar. The third member is Dipre, who plays the keyboard in the In Pursuit band.

Colleen said it was an easy decision to make, to give up the “spare” she doesn’t need, in part because her husband James did exactly the same thing for the wife of a friend five years ago.

“He’s made a list of the things he’s going to accomplish when he gets off dialysis; when he’s all better we want to take him out to the reef to go snorkeling.

That would be a big adventure.”

“And he’s healthy as a horse,” she said. “The only thing different is that you can’t wait if you need to pee, and you shouldn’t have ibuprofen.”

All of Colleen’s medical care and testing is completely free. The incision is arthroscopic, made through her navel. The recovery period is rapid.

“This costs me absolutely nothing.

It costs me my time, and my patience because I can’t wait to get this done,” said Colleen, who works in the court system as a substance abuse counselor in Marathon. Through research, Colleen said, she’s learned so much about living donor transplants, and how badly they are needed. Pleas are soaped on the back of cars and posted on Facebook.

Beatriz said that before Colleen’s offer, the prospect of going back on the organ transplant list was almost too discouraging.

“You can spend years on the list.

People die every day waiting,” said Beatriz. “I’ve never asked (someone to be a living donor). You don’t want to get your hopes up, and then when something happens, you’re down in the drain. I, and my whole family, have to be strong and positive because this is a fight that we do daily.”

The Moreira family has kept the trials to themselves. In fact, it didn’t really come to light until Hurricane Irma flooded their home. A terrible circumstance on its own, it was possibly deadly — think black mold — for Anthony. Sarah Brawer, an organizer for Presents in Paradise, became aware of the family’s situation last year this time when it became apparent the family needed a new computer to continue to homeschool the boys.

“I met the family maybe a handful of times in 2017. I knew that Anthony was ill, but didn’t know to what extent,” Colleen said.

Just days before the surgery, Colleen and Anthony — with families in tow — met for dinner. They meant to take a photo, but got too wrapped up in a game of Uno and spirited conversation.

“He’s made a list of the things he’s going to accomplish when he gets off dialysis,” Colleen said. “When he’s all better we want to take him out to the reef to go snorkeling. That would be a big adventure.”

hey don’t arrive in a sleigh with eight tiny reindeer, but the Holiday Helpers of the Keys have plenty in common with Santa. Wesley House is the lead agency of a coalition of community organizations, local government agencies, and nonprofits joining together to make special families’ holidays merry and bright.

“We want to be sure every child is going to have a good Christmas,” said Claire Hiller, special events and volunteer coordinator at Wesley House. Holiday Helpers operates on a referral basis, working not only through Wesley House, but also Bring an unthrough Salvation Army; Key West Police wrapped toy Department; Monroe County Sheriff’s Ofto the lighted fice; Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition; bike parade on SOS; Early Learning Coalition and more.

Each family must bring a referral form and an ID, and they are assisted with shopping for their children: three toys per child, as well as stocking stuffers and decorations. “The parents get the power to select the gifts, because they know their children best,” said Hiller.

Community events have helped fill the shelves—the Lighted Bike Parade requires a donated toy for registration.

MARATHON RECEIVES 32 ‘STUNNERS’ Cold-stunned turtles arrive from New England SARA MATTHIS

ver wonder how sick and cold turtles are transported? The answer is by private plane, in banana boxes, covered with bath towels.

Thirty-two Kemp’s ridley sea turtles arrived at the Marathon airport on Dec. 11. The turtles were stranded in Massachusetts after the stunning cold of Winter Storm Diego earlier this week. Rescued by the New England Aquarium in Boston, they were sent to the Florida Keys to be rehabilitated.

“Thankfully only two were in critical condition and those are in shallow water. The rest are in the large tank and doing well,” said the Turtle Hospital’s Bette Zirkelbach. “Only about half of them were really sick. The other half were already eating.”

The turtle’s medical records were emailed ahead of their arrival, and each turtle was marked with a day-glo orange number.

“As with patients in a hospital, we need to be able to identify the individual,” Zirkelbach said. “There’s a reason for those numbers.”

Zirkelback said the situation in the Northeast is dire.

“They are reporting more than 700 turtles dead, but they can’t keep up with the count,” she said.

Zirkelbach praised the coordinated effort to get the sick turtles to Marathon, including the ability to track the

plane. “We had the tail numbers and used flightaware.com. … It’s a little like the way everyone tracks Santa on Christmas Eve.” The turtles were delivered courtesy of pilot Chuck Yankee in coordination with Turtles Fly Too, a nonprofit.

Representative Sophia Costa said more flights to other destinations also are in the works to get all the cold-stunned turtles to treatment.

“I just finished flying three wolves on Monday,” said Yankee, adding tongue-in-cheek that he had his wife’s permission to make the turtle trip in his Pilatus PC-12. The trek started on Dec. 10 in Thomasville, Georgia, one of Yankee’s homeports. He picked up his co-pilot Mike Lalley in Atlanta, and then they flew to Marshfield, Mass. They made a stop to refuel before continuing on to Marathon.

How were the passengers?

“Pretty quiet. They flapped their flippers a little at the beginning but that was it,” he said, cheerfully.

ABOUT KEMP’S TURTLES Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are named after Key West’s Richard Moore Kemp (1825-1908). He was the first to send a specimen to Samuel Garman at Harvard in 1880. An avid naturalist and fisherman, he lived at 601 Caroline Street, now the Cypress House Hotel. William Kemp, brother of Richard, introduced the sponge industry from Key West to the New York market and they became prosperous from this business.

The etymology of the name “ridley” itself is unknown.

LAWYERS HELP 30 KEYS FAMILIES

M

ore than a year after Hurricane Irma, many low-income Keys residents are still struggling to stay afloat. Many residents continue to experience hurricane-related and other legal issues that have affected their economic stability.

On Dec. 7, pro bono volunteers from law firm Akerman LLP and Legal Services of Greater Miami, came to Marathon to provide free assistance to Keys residents during a one-day intensive legal clinic. Joining the Miami volunteers were attorneys representing the Monroe County Bar Association, along with case managers from Florida Restores, a nonprofit focusing on hurricane recovery in the Keys.

“It’s a fact that many residents of the Florida Keys are still struggling post-Hurricane Irma with various legal issues including FEMA, family law issues, employment issues, and housing,” said Jayme Cassidy, pro bono advocacy director for Legal Services of Greater Miami.

“Unfortunately, there simply aren’t enough resources in the Keys to assist every low-income family facing legal issues,” said Whitney Untiedt, Akerman’s director of pro bono initiatives. “The time and expense to travel to Miami to meet with pro bono lawyers can be an insurmountable hurdle for many of these families.”

During the five-hour clinic, the volunteers helped 30 families with a range of legal issues, from a Korean War veteran rebuilding his home on his own, to a Coast Guard employee struggling with a difficult family situation.

The pro bono collaboration was sponsored by Akerman LLP and hosted by the Marathon Community United Methodist Church.

SUICIDE PREVENTION IN THE KEYS

O

ur Keys family has been jarred by the sad reality of suicide, to which beloved members of our community have fallen victim in the past year. Keys United Way reports that Monroe County has the highest suicide rate in Florida, and demographic risk factors include a family history of suicide, being a male aged 18 to 29, identifying as GLBTQ, or being a military service person or a veteran.

Situational factors also put us at risk — and there are variables that we sometimes can’t predict. Samuel’s House, which provides “a safe haven in a sober setting for women and intact families that have no home,� has taken an initiative to support and educate Keys residents about suicide in the days leading up the holidays.

Samuel’s House has planned a series of workshops in the Lower Keys and Middle Keys, led by licensed clinical social worker Lynda Woods, who will lead a presentation on debunking myths, identifying risk factors, finding helpful strategies and using resources available to the community. Woods notes that many residents are still recovering from Irma, and she makes special consideration for that atrisk group. She also offers tips to self-identify risk or identify risk in loved ones (see box). All community members are welcome.

New club brings competitive video gaming to MHS

J

ust a few years ago, the term “esports” (pronounced e-sports, like e-mail) would understandably cause a bit of confusion to the average ear.

The world of competitive video gaming, and the broadcast of such gameplay, has exploded in popularity in recent years.

It fills stadiums and allows top content creators to earn more than $1 million per month playing today’s most popular video games. It’s also the focus of the new Marathon High School Esports Club.

The club was officially founded in August 2018 by a group of PC gamers led by junior Cory Bisson, the group’s current president. However, the idea was in the works since the 2017-18 school year. “I was looking at it for a while, but I didn’t think we had enough people. I told someone, they asked some others, and I realized, ‘Wow. There are a lot of people who would actually like to do this,’” said Bisson. The group steadily grew, though each gamer’s involvement and consistency varied depending on scheduling conflicts. The current club meets once per month or more as necessary, but the most active members are constantly chatting online after school through Discord, an online voice chat service designed for team gameplay.

The team competes in the High School Esports League, one of only two esports leagues in the nation. They chose this league due to its inclusion of their game titles of choice: “Rainbow Six Siege,” a multiplayer shooting game, “Rocket League,” a vehicular soccer game, and “Super Smash Brothers,” a Nintendo crossover fighting

game. Competitive seasons, called “majors,” consist of eight weeks of competition before the playoffs begin, with Marathon matched up against other high school esports teams around the country. The team has even competed against gamers overseas, including against a team of U.S. students on a military base in Japan.

Outside of competition, the club is busy planning a fundraiser. The team plans to capitalize on the exploding popularity of “Fortnite,” a battle royale game in which players fight to be the last team standing on an island with a deadly ever-shrinking storm. Intended for the end of January 2019, the event will pit duos of players against one another on gaming consoles set up in the school’s auditorium. The goal is simple: rack up the greatest number of eliminations in order to win a prize as one of the top finishers.

When asked about the use for the funds from such an event, as well as their future goals, the entire club is extremely clear: rather than investing only in themselves, they want to use the proceeds to create a more inclusive gaming community for others. The majority of competitions in the High School Esports League take place on PCs, but the high cost of purchasing these machines can be prohibitive to many students. When the MHS Esports Club began, many students were interested in participating, but the number dwindled as they realized the necessary investment.

The club’s members intend to use the new funds to buy games for those who can’t afford them, help students upgrade

computer parts, or even purchase entire setups that can be loaned out to allow new members to compete.

As they purchase these new setups, the group will be in no shortage of technical know-how. Most of the students have built their own gaming machines from individually-ordered components. Gaming, as it turns out, has led to other practical applications in the world of computers. “Most of us are pretty good at technology because of gaming,” said treasurer Katerina Nikiforova.

Along with their competitive sides and technical expertise, these gamers still know how to let loose and have a good time.

Asked about their favorite mid-game snack, they responded with the more standard “tortilla chips” or “salt and vinegar chips,” but ended with wild combinations like, “Takis and chocolate milk.” Even directly before a competitive match, there is always time for some extra enjoyment. When asked about their pre-game rituals, some discussed the jazz, alternative, or even K-pop music they like to listen to, and one even immediately responded, “dancing.”

The club is enjoying the current competitions, but its members seem most excited when discussing ways to include others in their hobby. Their ideas for making PC gaming accessible to more students are numerous, and they are eager to involve their community. “We’ll start with the fundraiser, and go from there,” said faculty advisor James Murphy. “Baby steps.”

BOATS LIGHT UP THE NIGHT The 22nd annual Boot Key Harbor boat parade was spectacular, with 18 decorated vessels. The events started Friday with a dock walk and toy drive at Marathon Marina. The dock walk featured the decorated boats, and Sea Tow collected more than 100 toys for area children. Then, on Saturday, the lighted boat parade traveled through Boot Key Harbor to Lazy Days restaurant for celebration and awards. On Sunday, Key Colony Beach hosted its lighted boat parade. he Marathon Girls Basketball team lost a home game to Posnak on Dec. 6, going to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in regular play. The Lady Fins came out strong in the first half but struggled in the second. Coach Teresa Konrath said conditioning contributed to the second half performance and that gives her a direction to go in practice. riving on U.S.1 past Otherside Adventure Park and Keys Cable on Grassy Key, it may be difficult at first to see the park’s many offerings from the road. The site’s next event intends to change that.

The Holiday Shop Hop, taking place Thursday, Dec. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m., will allow the community to come together and enjoy each other’s company while supporting more than a dozen local businesses and organizations signed up for the event. It will feature music, Christmas lights, and complimentary beverages. Most importantly, it will give all attendees the chance to buy from local businesses as they cross items off their holiday shopping list.

“It’s all about the community,” General Manager Matt Sexton said, noting the importance of buying from local vendors. “We want to open this place up as an island marketplace with a bit more of a soul and real genuine Keys folks.”

More than just shopping, however, Thursday also will be the park’s chance to show off its progress on several initiatives. “This is the culmination of years of progress and hard work,” said Sexton. In addition to its water sports offerings, Otherside is home to a botanical garden, a developing art gallery and tropical fruit nursery, a metal mill shop, and a sawmill. An on-site restaurant and a half-mile art walk around the park’s water sports lagoon are both slated to open in the near future. The park established the Florida Keys Community Center, a non-profit tasked with managing the group’s arts, sustainability and community engagement initiatives.

date future community events while teaching visitors about sustainability goals and the history of the area.

The most recent accomplishment is the opening of Otherside’s second retail store. The shop is stocked with water sports equipment and apparel, and the design of the building is intended to showcase the park’s commitment to sustainability and a minimal ecological footprint. Instead of selling hundreds of plastic water bottles, the

store opts for a filtered water dispenser. The wooden wall panels are hand milled from sustainably grown spruce.

Even the counter edges are live edge slabs of Grassy Key wood brought down by Hurricane Irma. Thanks to a 71-panel, 240-watt solar array on the roof, the facility has a negative power consumption and sells energy back each month to be used by neighbors on Grassy Key. “This was the big infrastructure push that we made after the storm,” Sexton said. “We want this to set the bar for how other places look.”

After all their work, the park’s staff are eager to celebrate with the community and hope that they can allow local businesses to showcase themselves while simultaneously highlighting their own progress. In Sexton’s words, “We want everyone to shop, have a drink or two, and see what this place is all about.”

DEDICATED SERVICE President celebrates 30th year at First State Bank Karen Sharp, president, chief executive officer, and director of First State Bank of the Florida Keys, is marking 30 years of Karen Sharp service at the bank.

Sharp began her career in the financial industry in 1981 and has been working at First State Bank since 1988.

“Karen’s vision, dedication, leadership and commitment to the bank and Keys community has been an important factor in our ongoing success and an example to us all,” said Jack Spottswood, chairman of the bank’s board. “We are very lucky to have her as the leader of our local family of bankers.”

A native of Dearborn, Mich., Sharp is a Florida Certified Public Accountant and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida Atlantic University, and a master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University.

She is a board member of the Key West Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Bankers Association’s BancServ Committee, and is a past board member of the association. It is with great sadness that the family of Dennis LaFever (The Big D) announces his passing on Nov. 13, 2018 at the age of 70. He will be remembered by the love of his life and wife of 35 years, Jackie. Dennis is survived by his brothers Mark LaFever, Miles LaFever (special friend Diane Degrouff), sisterin-law Diane LaFever, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved.

He is also remembered by his life-long buddies Henry Kurth, Jimmy Krier, Henry Krier and Nick Dider as well as the many other fishing and hunting buddies and many special friends throughout the United States. He was predeceased by his brothers Neal and Jay, brother-in-law Jeffrey Horn, sisterin-law Sandy LaFever, mother Helen, father Clarence, as well as mother and father-in-law Joan and Edward Janke.

Dennis was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and attended Random Lake High School and graduated from college at MATC. He was a licensed electrician for more than 50 years. In 1984, Dennis and Jackie left Wisconsin for Virginia City, Montana, where they established the Virginia City Café. In 1990 they moved to West Yellowstone to establish Bullwinkle’s; the restaurant has become the premier eatery in their adopted town. During his time in West Yellowstone, Dennis served as the police commissioner as well as an airport board member and MTA member for 30 years. His community service will be greatly missed.

Dennis was an avid fisherman and hunter, having bagged the namesake moose for which Bullwinkle’s was named. Fishing in Canada and other places around the country was favored

by Dennis and he had an abiding love for cars.

Dennis has been cremated and his ashes will be returned and scattered according to his wishes and he will end at his family farm in Wisconsin.

A private memorial service will be held in Wisconsin. There will be three Celebrations of Life including one in Key Colony Beach on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Key Colony Inn.

Charles “Charlie” Nicholas Bragan, 86, a dedicated husband and father, passed away Dec. 6, 2018 at home in the presence of family in Marathon, Florida.

Born and raised in upstate New York, he wed in July 1958. In June 1968, Charlie and Maureen moved the family from Connecticut to Marathon, where they raised their children.

Charlie is survived by daughter Kathleen (Mark), daughter Patricia (Leon), son Chuck, daughter Lisa, sister Phyllis, brothers David (Joanie) and Robert (Lucia), brother-in-law James (Eva), and faithful companion Miley the dog.

Grandchildren are: Matthew, Nicholas, Christina, Michael, Lexi, Samantha, Charles, James and their families. Great-grandchildren are: Isabella, Aiden, Layra, L J, Bella, Nicholas, R J, Jasey, Jameson, Benjamin, Abel.

Nieces and nephews are: Janice, Joann, Mark, Jeanie, Kim, Scott B., Jay, Courtney, Justin, Timothy, Scott C., Chandra, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife Maureen, parents Charles and Ruth Bragan, in-laws James and Mary, brothers-in-law Richard and Harvey, and niece Letitia.

Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m., at Kirk of the Keys, 8877 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL, 33050.

Irving “Mickey” Belin, age 100, of Marathon, Florida and formerly of Long Branch, N.J. died peacefully Nov. 14, 2018 at Hawthorne Village Healthcare in Sarasota, Florida. Mr. Belin was born in New York City to the late Samuel and Dora Belin and lived in Long Branch before moving to Marathon 30 years ago. He was the owner and operator of New York Auto Company in West Long Branch and was a seasoned auto upholsterer. He served our country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Elks and Musicians Union. At the 1939 World’s Fair he won the Amateur Big Band competition and always loved playing his trumpet.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy F. Belin, in 1994. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law Jack and Diane Belin of Tucson, Arizona, Larry and Veronica Belin of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ann Belin of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Cheri and Ray Eshani of Bradenton, Florida; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Avenue in Long Branch, N.J. on Dec. 6, 2018 with a funeral service on Dec. 7. Interment is at Glenwood Cemetery in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

A memorial service was also held at the Marathon Community Methodist Church in Marathon, Fla. on Dec. 6, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall Street, Eatontown, NJ 07724. an Saus explains: We collect the sewage into five treatment plants between Hawks Cay and the 7 Mile Bridge.

We maintain the biomass in the plant to “feed on” the sewage.

Biomass is composed of millions of microorganisms that are given air but its only food source would be the waste or, as we also call it, sewage.

They eat their food and multiply in vast quantities, so we have to remove some of them to keep the process balanced. What we remove is called “waste sludge.”

It looks brown and resembles something we flush down our toilets, but in fact it’s not what you think it is.

We put that mass into a tank called “a digester.” In that tank we give them a lot of air but, this time, no food. After getting very hungry, they start eating each other and we get what could be called “a volatile solids reduction.”

It takes place in the digester and once it’s digested and the process is finished, we get what is called Class B sludge.

We will then run the liquid sludge through the centrifuge to get rid of as much water as we can. In this case we end up with a mass called “the sludge cake.”

The centrifuge is the size of a semitrailer and we tow it to different plants. It weighs about 20 to 25 tons and is valued at about half a million dollars.

Cake can either go to a composting facility or a landfill.

I was born in Ohio but I came here 25 years ago and have since worked in every wastewater facility in the Keys.

My background is in instrumentation and I have a degree in electronics from the University of Akron, Ohio.

My wife and I came here on vacation on Thanksgiving, in 1992, after hurricane Andrew. We liked it here and thought: “While we are here, let’s look for jobs.”

Within that one weekend, we both found jobs, bought a house in Big Pine and got two offers on our home in Virginia. We lived on Big Pine Key for many years and now live on a boat in Marathon.

It was meant to be.

his column has a sadly recurring theme. This past Monday, Dec. 10, was the 15-month anniversary of Hurricane Irma’s disastrous visit to the Florida Keys. And thanks mostly to the State of Florida’s ineptly run Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the City of Marathon (and most other local governments) have yet to receive one penny of FEMA reimbursement funds.

As I’ve written before, the president and Congress authorized immediate 100 percent reimbursement funds for the first 30 days post-Irma, with the expectation that immediate needs would be immediately funded.

In stepped the DEM, adding a bureaucratic obstacle to getting local governments the funding they needed.

Immediate needs funding was put on hold, as DEM demanded oversight before one local government could get the first reimbursement dollar.

Marathon’s council had worked to rebuild our reserves before Irma, and I’m so glad we did. That gave us some initial operating money, supplemented by a $10 million line of credit we took out. Credit goes to our amazing city manager and staff, who got Marathon cleaned up while remaining solvent.

DEM, however, remains a real problem. It’s bad enough that they inserted themselves as an adversary rather than an advocate for local governments that really need assistance. But what’s even worse is that the department bald-faced lied about Marathon’s FEMA reimbursement history post-Wilma. Wes Maul, DEM’s director, is an unqualified hack who got the job because he used to book the governor’s travel arrangements.

Inept is one of the nicest things I can say about his job performance. Thankfully, Maul has resigned, and hopefully a new administration will lead to a new DEM direction. Time will tell.

Sadly, DEM’s audit processes have caused major problems for poorer communities. Calhoun County is an inland county in the Panhandle that was devastated by Hurricane Michael this year. It has fewer than 15,000 residents and its only industry is timber.

Arek Sarkissian wrote about what DEM is doing to Calhoun County in Politico Florida. Here are his words on the situation:

But Calhoun's circumstances haven’t swayed DEM. The agency is refusing to distribute any recovery dollars until the conclusion of a lengthy approval process by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA will expedite recovery funding at a state’s request, but DEM is requiring municipalities, counties and state agencies to pay for critical projects such as debris removal and emergency management, and then wait for FEMA to reimburse them.”

With only $3 million on hand, Calhoun can’t afford to pay its bills. Its industry is dead. There are no jobs; property assessments and tax revenues are forecast to be way down. And though Calhoun is eligible for FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program that provides advance funding, Maul sent an email to Calhoun erroneously stating that “such a cash advance would violate a state law requiring all federal grants to be obtained through a formal contract.”

It’s this kind of thinking — plus Maul’s precarious relationship with the truth — that has caused undue heartache to Florida communities ravaged by hurricanes in recent years. I am hopeful, but not necessarily optimistic, that the new administration will bring about change. I can only say that what DEM has done to communities in need is despicable, and wish Maul a fond good riddance.

fficials from various agencies paid a visit to Islamorada on Dec. 12 to discuss the Everglades Water Supply Project and the Combined Operational Plan, which will determine how the water is used.

For decades, state and federal governments have been building a network of restoration projects with the goal to deliver more water to Florida Bay. Projects have cost taxpayers more than $1 billion.

With construction complete, the next step will be to turn the projects on in order to get much needed ecosystem benefits, according to Cara Cappa, Everglades Restoration program manager.

Now, agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Florida Water Management District and National Park Service are figuring out a plan to operate the system. Through the Combined Operational Plan, a comprehensive integrated water con-

trol plan, agencies will dictate how the restoration projects are used, how much water comes to Florida Bay and where the water will flow.

Discussions on Dec. 12 focused on modifying water deliveries to Everglades National Park. Jed Redwine, of the National Park Service, noted that improving hydrologic conditions through Shark River Slough in the park is an important first step. Redwine said it would be the first time since the 1960s and ’70s that more water would pass through Shark Slough.

Officials said the plan re-distributes the existing water budget.

Ecological and flood risk subteams presented an evaluation during the meeting of the Combined Operational Plan Round 2 alternatives and base conditions. A workshop was also held to solicit input on optimization of the final alternative for round 3 hydrologic modeling, which is scheduled to start in January. The meeting, which lasted throughout the day, also gathered feedback from the public toward the end.

GLOBAL GATHERING Experts convene in bid to restore, reinvigorate coral reefs JIM McCARTHY

“meeting of hope” is how Scott Winters termed it during the opening remarks of Reef Futures 2018 on Dec. 11 at Ocean Reef.

With 500 in attendance, the symposium from Dec. 10-14 is bringing experts and leading scientists from 40 countries to share the latest science and techniques for coral reef restoration while kicking off a global effort to scale up restoration as a tool for coral reef conservation and management.

The symposium, put on by the Coral Restoration Consortium, focused on the role of restoration in reef management and conservation, best restoration practices, interventions in context of a changing planet and demonstrating the value and efficacy of restoration and interventions.

Winters, who’s co-chair of Coral Restoration Consortium and CEO of Coral Restoration Foundation, said it’s not too late for intervention and not too late to save coral reefs.

Winters said the room full of people is passionate and engaged in saving the reef.

The Coral Restoration Consortium (CRC) is made up of scientists, managers, coral restoration practitioners and educators, dedicated to enabling coral reef ecosystems to survive the 21st century and beyond.

Its mission is to bring collaboration among participants and facilitate scientific ingenuity to demonstrate that restoration can be achieved.

nity we have here, of people working every day to save coral reefs,” Winters said. “This week, we have the opportunity to connect not just with people you might know. I’m hoping it catalyzes new connections and to learn from one another.”

Even though individuals may differ on details related to coral reef restoration, Winters said, they’re all on the same team as they work to make a difference. Winters said the more those in coral restoration work as one community, the greater their impact.

Tom Moore, consortium co-chair and coral reef restoration program manager with NOAA, has been a tireless advocate and champion of the coral reefs, according to Winters.

In his remarks, Moore noted how a small group gathered two years ago in Fort Lauderdale to discuss forming a restoration community. And two years later, a global gathering was held for the first time.

“It’s remarkable and exceeded my wildest expectations,” Moore said. “The driving force behind our success isn’t a logo or organizational name; it’s everyone in the room to work collectively as one team. We are working collectively to make a difference.”

Speakers included Buki Rinkevich, of the National Institute of Oceanography in Israel, who discussed coral restoration activities.

Sarah Fangman, superintendent of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, spoke on the reef system in the Keys and the challenges faced.

Ilsa Kuffner of the U.S. Geological Survey, Reed Noss of the Florida Institute of Conservation Science and Line Bay, research scientist with the Australian Institute of Marine Science, also spoke during the symposium.

rmed with scientists, coral practitioners and educators, the Coral Restoration Consortium is dedicating its efforts on enabling coral reef ecosystems.

To bring coral reefs back, CRC says the focus is being put on topical priorities for the next three to five years. For each priority, a dedicated working group is being formed to develop solutions-oriented action plans and to help establish best management practices.

According to CRC, priorities include scaling up in-water, land-based and larval propagation; designing projects to demonstrate ecosystem functioning and coastal protection; fostering genetics science; and developing restoration monitoring guidelines and common-access data platforms.

Tom Moore, consortium co-chair and coral reef restoration program manager with NOAA, said the consortium wouldn’t be what it is today without Tali Vardi, coral science lead at NOAA. Vardi, who’s coordinator with CRC, spoke during the symposium on Dec. 11 about the consortium. Two years ago, scientists and managers gathered and realized they wanted to get the community together.

“There was a ton of sharing and a ton of energy,” she said.

The CRC is initially focusing on Caribbean coral restoration. CRC is inviting participation from scientists, managers, and practitioners working in other regions to help expand knowledge and collaboration.

If successful in the Caribbean and resources permit, the consortium would look forward to helping spread restoration efforts globally. Best practices and lessons learned from CRC efforts in the Caribbean will be shared with managers around the globe through the Reef Resilience Network.

According to CRC, reefs provide not only marine life with food but 500 million people with nourishment as well. On the medical side, drugs derived from coral and reef-associated species are treating ailments and several types of cancer.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I enjoy throwing axes, something that I only have the privilege of doing when I’m away from the Keys.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? I didn’t know that I would skip junior year.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I have been involved in drama, as well as Academic Challenge. I am looking forward to participating in Mock Trial. I enjoy orating and socializing with witty, ambitious people.

What are your plans after high school? I am positively fascinated by psychology and my ambition is to become a psychiatrist. I’ll also do plenty of hiking and fishing and playing guitar. I see myself in the mountains ...

What do you hope to be remembered for at MHS? Oh, I imagine I’ll be remembered for playing a little guitar and joking around. I’ve only been at Marathon High for a brief moment of my academic career. So far, it’s been all right.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I’d prefer to be fishing if I have the choice.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I’d prefer to be married, welltraveled, and at least entering into a lucrative and fulfilling profession.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The worst rule is that which prohibits me wearing pajamas on my day of choosing. I once did it, and came away unscathed, but I still was reprimanded. Outright buffoonery! The best rule is our allowance to exist and breathe in the fine institution that is Marathon High.
