It’s essentially the biggest, best version of “Christmas in July” that any New Englander could imagine. But there’s one thing missing: chimneys. How can Santa and his eight tiny reindeer make it to your condo or Conch house without one? While we swallow the idea of a bearded man in a flying sleigh traveling the world in one night, physics are physics. So, we asked Key Westers:

Merry and Bright BIKE RIDE LIGHTS UP KEY WEST

T

he annual Lighted Bike Parade is one of the most anticipated family outings over the holidays in Key West. Wesley House annually organizes the event, the registration fee an unwrapped toy for their Holiday Helpers effort, benefitting Keys families in need (see story p. 17). On Dec. 6, riders on bikes with tinsel, lights and antlers congregated at Bayview Park. Kids got pictures on Santa’s lap, while adults enjoyed the evening’s offerings of cookies and “milk” (we all know that’s not coffee in your cup, Dad). The festivities concluded on Applerouth Lane, with a block party, food and dancing.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

T

he origins of Key West as a place name date back to the idea of an island strewn with the bones of ancient Indians. It was not the habit of prehistoric Indians to bury the deceased, but to lay their bodies out to dry in the sun. A June 14, 1681 Spanish document noted, “the enemy is gathering at Cayo de Guesas to invade Havana.” A Spanish chart mapping the locations of the wrecked ships from the 1733 treasure fleet identifies the island as Cayos de Guezo. The island appeared as the more familiar Cayo de Huesos on Juan de Liguera’s 1742 chart. Cayo de Huesos translates to Bone Island. The island was identified as West Kay on a 1769 chart. A 1790 chart referred to the island as, “Cayo Huesso commonly called Key West.” During the island’s initial military occupation, the island was renamed after Secretary of the Navy Smith Thompson and called Thompson’s Island. When Commodore Porter arrived to establish a naval depot, he declared it Allenton after Lt. William Allen, part of his West Indies Squadron, who was killed in action the year before while fighting pirates. It has been Key West ever since.

icking off with an evening of food, drinks and a lighted boat parade, the I Love Stock Island Festival counts another year of success. Taste of Stock Island offered a trolley ride to favorite Stock Island eateries, narrated by a knowledgeable guide and with cameos by chefs offering pairings.

That evening, boats lit up the harbor for the annual boat parade, easing into an after party with live music and libations at Hogfish Bar & Grill.

On Saturday, Stock Islanders enjoyed family-friendly festivities at the Discover Stock Island event at Stock Island Marina Village, including a “Rooster Run” 5k, trolley and open house tours, and an authentic Cuban pig roast. Businesses, locals, artists and tourists joined together to celebrate what many have called our modern day version of “Old Key West.”

t is a rare occurrence these days when a poem brings a smile, if not a chuckle, to the reader. Many of Bill Lorraine’s poems in his new collection, “Under the Island Palms,” do just that; indeed, some of them are outright funny. There are, to be sure, plenty of serious poems here, including some beautiful evocations of landscape and the lush contours of the sensual life. atasha, like any great drag queen, knows how to make an entrance.

Bedazzled like a Statue of Liberty Christmas Tree, her step onto the stage and into our hearts is about as subtle as a thunderstorm. Played by Trey Gerrald, she sets a tone for the delightful holiday play “With Bells On,” at The Red Barn Theater through Jan. 5, with a special Dec. 25 performance.

Canadian playwright Darrin Hagen, author of “Bitch Slap,” which previously played at Waterfront Theater, has brought his brand of fun and sarcasm back to the Key West stage just in time for the holidays.

Anxious about getting to a drag queen pageant, Natasha runs into Ted, played by Don Beardon, in their apartment building elevator.

Predictably, the elevator gets stuck, trapping the two misfits in a delightful “getting to know each other” story line. Ted, a divorced older accountant, is nerdy and with the social graces of an awkward teenager — the antithesis of Natasha, effervescent and youthful, magnetic and impeccable throughout the performance.

“Rule number 1: my first answer is always sarcastic,” says Natasha.

“It’s like a whole new language,” marvels Ted.

Ted reveals himself to be a sweet loner; Natasha, for all her brazen beauty, is conscious of forever being a social outcast. Once the two find their common ground, the affection and friendship grow.

“Not everyone can be the show,” says Ted. “Some people have to be the audience,” proving opposite sides of the same coin can have some fun.

It’s a holiday feel-good play about the gifts we can give each other, like kindness, affection and humor. Playwright Hagen has drawn the familiar picture of wayward souls finding each other during the holidays with likable characters and one absolutely fabulous Christmas tree costume.

on’t tell Dr. Liz Morin to get off your back; she’s right where she is supposed to be. Chiropractor and self-confessed spitfire, Dr. Morin is fierce about her practice and helping people achieve better health.

The Connecticut native suffered terrible illness during college and happened to meet a chiropractor who saved her health from debilitating asthma, chronic sinusitis and migraines. Through traditional chiropractic measures, she became healthy and chose the profession with a strong passion to help others find relief.

Opening Excel Chiropractic in Key West just weeks before Irma wasn’t easy, but now her family-oriented practice is aiding all ages, from newborns to the elderly. “I follow the traditional methods of chiropractic medicine, I look at X-rays; they tell me everything I need to know,” said Dr. Morin. “I don’t cut corners.”

Her followers appreciate everything from the five-minute visits and the simplicity, to even prenatal care.

With a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and a doctor of chiropractic degree, Dr. Morin’s love of learning and “tough love” is the right medicine to back up anyone’s health.

Why did you choose to be a chiropractor? What makes it special for you? It chose me. I was very unhealthy in my college years and was hospitalized and on many medications for sinus issues, terrible migraines. … I was ready to give up when I met a chiropractor at the college career fair and learned what chiropractic was really about. I began shadowing him and learning about the nerve system and why I was so unhealthy. It had to do with my birth being a c-section, the pressure from the doctor taking me out of my mom was the actual shift in my spine that broke down my health and slowly made me sick. How you come into the world and the little falls you have growing up truly create shifts in the spine that make you uncomfortable or sick. If the whole world knew this, there would be a lot less suffering.

What have you learned from the practice? We are all capable of truly amazing health, with no outside intervention, as long as you take care of yourself, which includes taking care of your spine and nerve system with regular chiropractic. I have learned that my energy and my hands are truly amazing. I am beyond blessed to love what I do and work with my tribe of Excel-lifers.

What are the biggest misconceptions about the practice? That it is about BACK pain. It is not. … It is about checking the nerve system’s function, which happens to be protected BY your spine. So that is why we look at the spine. Also that it is dangerous — it is so safe. Malpractice (insurance) for an entire year is roughly $1,200 for a chiropractor versus in the hundreds of thousands for an MD. Hello!

What is the secret benefit to seeing a chiropractor maybe people do not realize? Every time you are adjusted, your immune system is boosted fourfold. So families who utilize chiropractic regularly for health maintenance are sick less often. It is like day and night.

How has working in Key West affected your practice? I grew quickly here. In fact, my practice grew 3x in only a year of being open. I attribute this to the fact that I am a perfection-

ist in my craft, and I only see locals.

If you are visiting Key West, I will only take you on if you are here for two weeks or more. I am fiercely dedicated to my local families who chose to be here, and I do not want tourists taking up appointment slots. They can go elsewhere. Sounds mean, but it works at Excel Chiropractic.

What are you absolutely determined to do? Make you laugh and/ or smile. No matter what and no matter how bad it may seem, I can get you to smile.

What job would you be terrible at?

I would be a really crappy Subway sandwich artist.

What is the most annoying habit that other people have? Gossiping and being fake. Just be real. You get one chance here on this globe.

If invisible in Key West, what would you do? Sneak into the men’s only resorts! Just kidding. I would take tours of the best historic homes in Key West and make myself at home.

What is something you will NEVER do again? Second-guess myself.

Favorite guilty pleasure? I love “Jeopardy” and get especially excited when I get Final Jeopardy right.

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? Protection of our reef and water from environmental hazards and humans mistreating it.

What have you only recently formed an opinion about? The importance of mental health and self care.

Lunch with one famous person: whom would you choose? Elon Musk.

SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS WHILE PREGNANT

H

ere in Key West, our holiday season is a big parade. Yes, I know, we have a real one, and a wonderful one it is. But what I’m really talking about is the steady stream of visitors, parties, over-the-top light displays and a host of other opportunities to celebrate the season in whatever way one sees fit. It’s a parade that dwarfs all those that march down Duval Street.

As festive as things are this time of year, it can all get a little overwhelming for anyone.

But the season poses special challenges if you’re pregnant. It would be wonderful if a momto-be could open up an early present and find a holiday survival kit-in-a-box. Unfortunately, that’s not possible. But what we can do is look at some of the issues that pregnant moms face this time of year.

We can then talk about some suggestions for enjoying the holidays while keeping the two of you healthy.

When you break it down, holiday pregnancy challenges fall into two categories.

Let’s talk about the first one: minimizing stress! If you’re pregnant during the holidays, it’s prime time to scale back your efforts. Some future moms may find all that baking relaxing, but if not (plus those kitchens can be HOT, even in December), can someone else do it — even your favorite grocer? Can the decorating and shopping be delegated? Which is less effort — brick-andmortar shopping or doing it online? (And as we’ve come to find out here in Key West, this may partly depend on who’s providing our Internet service!)

Of course, there’s no one solution to any of this, but don’t hesitate to enlist the help of loved ones. Even older children have a role here.

If you have managed to offload some holiday duties, use the time to get some rest! Now is not the time to commit to every potential gathering. Look at your list and prioritize the gatherings that mean the most to you, which may leave you a little more time for shuteye. And if you face trouble sleeping because of visions of things that dance in your head, talk to your obstetrician about getting an “okay” on whatever medicinal or herbal remedy relaxes you.

On to Category 2: eating and drinking safely. Food is definitely part of any holiday celebration, but there are some ground rules. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to foodborne infections, so food safety is very important. Have those hot foods stay hot and cold foods stay cold!

Also, it’s important to avoid certain uncooked foods; now might not be the best time to sample that conch ceviche or sushi tower.

Other issues in the food department also crop up from time to time for pregnant women. If nausea is an issue, keep something handy that helps you get through that — maybe some dry crackers or ginger tea. While advice from individual doctors varies, be aware of the current thinking, as reflected by the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, that no amount of alcohol exposure is safe for an unborn child.

When you think of it, pregnancy and the holidays have a lot in common. Both can be hectic times in a woman’s life. Both are also good reasons to celebrate. Taking a few steps to take care of yourself and your baby-to-be will help ensure a healthy holiday season — the best present of all.

A HELPING HAND SUICIDE PREVENTION IN THE KEYS

O

ur Keys family has been jarred by the sad reality of suicide, to which beloved members of our community have fallen victim in the past year. Keys United Way reports that Monroe County has the highest suicide rate in Florida, and demographic risk factors include a family history of suicide, being a male aged 18 to 29, identifying as GLBTQ, or being a military service person or a veteran.

Situational factors also put us at risk — and there are variables that we sometimes can’t predict. Samuel’s House, which provides “a safe haven in a sober setting for women and intact families that have no home,” has taken an initiative to support and educate Keys residents about suicide in the days leading up the holidays.

Samuel’s House has planned a series of workshops in the Lower Keys and Middle Keys, led by licensed clinical social worker Lynda Woods, who will lead a presentation on debunking myths, identifying risk factors, finding helpful strategies and using resources available to the community. Woods notes that many residents are still recovering from Irma, and she makes special consideration for that atrisk group. She also offers tips to self-identify risk or identify risk in loved ones (see box). All community members are welcome.

MANATEE I NUMBERS IT HASN’T BEEN A GOOD YEAR

t hasn’t been a good year for the manatee in the state of Florida.

Statewide, there have been 763 deaths reported in the first 11 months compared to the 538 reported deaths in 2017.

The red tide blooms in Lee, Charlotte and Sarasota counties had a definite effect. The official count of red tide deaths statewide — including those confirmed and suspected — stands at 206, with one month left to report. Last year, the number was 67. But that’s not as bad as 2013, when the red tide manatee deaths climbed to 277.

According to Mote Marine Laboratory, red tide is to blame for 10 percent of manatee deaths when averaged over 10 years. According to an article published on Mote Marine’s website, that number jumps to 30 percent during bloom years.

The manatees that expire from red tide are categorized as “natural; other” deaths. Of course, manatees expire for

many reasons, including infections and birth complications. The data captures that, plus deaths in categories such as perinatal (stillborn or very young manatees), cold stress (water temperatures below 68 degrees), natural, undetermined (no necropsy) and watercraft strikes.

In the Florida Keys, the numbers are still tragic, but nowhere near the highest in the state. In 2018, there were 25, most in the Upper Keys, except two in Marathon and two in Key West. In 2017, there were 17 reported manatee deaths. Of the 17 deaths, six were from undetermined causes, two manatees were never recovered, four were perinatal and five were from boat strikes.

Every year, boat strikes are responsible for about 20 percent of manatee deaths, except in abnormal years with red tide, which skews the statistic.

But there’s good news, too. There have been 118 manatees rescued so far this year, 66 of which have been released. Most of the sea cows had suffered a boat strike, but plenty get tangled in crab traps or monofilament or some type of manmade structure like a culvert.

Mote Marine immunology expert Cathy Walsh and FIU chemist Kathleen Rein are studying how to treat red tide sickness in the sea cow. According to Mote, the team will study the effectiveness of certain antioxidants as opposed to the current treatment of anti-inflammatories.

“The current approach is simply to give palliative care and wait for them to clear the toxin and get better,” Rein said in a Mote report. “This new treatment could accelerate the healing process.”

The FWC has an entire department dedicated to manatee research, including tracking and counting the population, and trying to develop some type of technology to reduce boat strikes.

Two years ago, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service changed the manatee status from endangered to threatened.

RESCUE & RELEASE Twin 2-year-old manatees named Millennium (male) and Falcon (female) were released back into the water off Key Largo about a month ago. The siblings were rescued in October 2016 by Dolphin Research Center and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission after their mother, a well-known manatee named Bonnie, was killed by a boat strike. After their rescue, the young calves were transported to Miami Seaquarium for their initial care. They were then transferred to Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio to grow up a little. In September 2018, they returned to Miami to begin acclimation to ambient water temperatures, sea grass and other things in preparation for their release.

Now weighing about 600 pounds each, the manatees were outfitted with satellite tracking tags. Their condition and progress will be monitored for the next few months to ensure that they are thriving.

hey don’t arrive in a sleigh with eight tiny reindeer, but the Holiday Helpers of the Keys have plenty in common with Santa. Wesley House is the lead agency of a coalition of community organizations, local government agencies, and nonprofits joining together to make special families’ holidays merry and bright.

Their united mission? “Providing holiday gifts to children of families who are economically challenged, working in the service industry, construction, tourism- and water-based economy.”

“We want to be sure every child is going to have a good Christmas,” said Claire Hiller, special events and volunteer coordinator at Wesley House. Holiday Helpers operates on a referral basis, working not only through Wesley House, but also through Salvation Army; Key West Police Department; Monroe County Sheriff’s Office; Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition; SOS; Early Learning Coalition and more.

Hiller said the referral basis targets “families that we know that are going to have trouble over Christmas.” Referral forms go to childcare centers, as well as the Sheriff’s Office and Police Department. The shared effort to disseminate toys (and holiday cheer) is taken very seriously. The different organizations communicate closely to be sure each population is served. Hiller recalls receiving an email from the folks at the United Way stating they want to be sure no one in the Keys “falls through the cracks.”

Holiday toy stores are set up in Key West, Marathon and Key Largo, so that parents can visit and pick out toys. Each family must bring a

referral form and an ID, and they are assisted with shopping for their children: three toys per child, as well as stocking stuffers and decorations.

“The parents get the power to select the gifts, because they know their children best,” said Hiller.

Community events have helped fill the shelves—the Lighted Bike Parade required a donated toy for registration.

“A lot of businesses, when they have their company parties, ask their staff to bring toys for Holiday Helpers,” Hiller said. “We have incredible individuals and service groups.” Key West hotspot La Te Da, whose annual holiday fete is always one for the books, is famous for providing a mountain of toys for little Conchs via Holiday Helpers. St. Mary’s has an angel tree, and a member of the congregation donates a toy for each “angel.”

The folks from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office also swing into Santa mode. “Jon Crane and his Leadership Monroe class — for nine or 10 years — they continue to provide bicycles for Holiday Helpers,” Hiller said. Crane is the operations captain at the Monroe County Jail.

“The Sheriff’s Office lines all the bikes up in the hallway, and they deliver them, or the parents can come pick out their bike.”

“Jon Crane and his Leadership Monroe class just rocks,” Hiller said.

The spirit of holiday giving doesn’t just move those receiving gifts, but those volunteering. Hiller was touched by the giving spirit of places that are still in Irma recovery, yet have reached out to help others in need. “There was a mobile home park that was decimated during Irma, up in Marathon, and they called us and said they were contributing toys.” Turns out the Keys aren’t just strong; they’re also sweet.

MAKING THE PAST PRESENT BIG TAKES CLIENTS BACK IN TIME

arbara Feinberg had been working as an artist and framer for 40 years. But Bone Island Graphics and Framing was just a promising storefront at 1120 White Street until, as she said, “It was the right thing at the right time, and it fell into my lap.” She’s referencing several years ago, when Ben Franklin closed and Feinberg found herself buying its equipment and inventory to build a business. BIG opened Dec. 13, 2016 and is entering year number three. BIG is the only place in town that does both custom framing for those prints and photos lying around the house (Feinberg says everyone has at least five items that need to be framed—true for me) but also for artful hand restoration of special pieces.

“I make people cry,” she said. “I do.

There’s a personal attachment to art and photos, and the story behind them.”

Feinberg’s mother was an artist as well, and she tells the story of her path to framing. “I’m the youngest of four, and my dad was school board president back in Cleveland.” She said, “When my parents went to Florida, we (kids) had a party. There were a million people in my house, and then after, we’re trying to clean and cut cigarette holes out of carpet.” Young Barbara did her best to mitigate the damage, but she made an oversight. “There was a print that had a cracked pane of glass, so I went to the hardware store and got the glass cut and replaced it, and my Dad said: ‘How did that get fixed?’” It had already been broken before they left.

Busted as she was, Barbara began the path that would culminate at BIG. When she left the nest: “I went to the Cleveland Institute of Art, majored in Graphic Design,” Feinberg said, but she didn’t ultimately answer the call to New York — Pratt or New York School of Design. “When you are young enough, and hip enough, there’s nothing cooler than being an art school student,” she laughs. Her trajectory in Key West has been arguably as cool.

She originally moved down in 1987 and has worked at Alan Maltz Gallery and Kennedy Studios over the years. “I had a gallery called Studio Bahama in the mid-’90s across from Blue Heaven,” she said. “I’ve learned a lot. You really have to work hard.”

Her restoration work spans decades.

“I did the old Campbell House on Elizabeth Street, and the walls were all murals — done by two Italian artists — and I was on scaffolding for the better part of a year,” she said. “I had to do powdered pigments to mix with different types of oil, and it won a historic restoration award.”

Feinberg also painted the iconic sign outside the Garden of Eden—so we can credit and blame her for at least one block of iconic Duval Street nudity.

One of her best stories (and that’s saying a lot) takes place just after Hurricane Wilma.

She said, “I was living by Louie’s Backyard.

After the hurricane, we didn’t get the storm surge, but Coconut Beach did.” Feinberg and her husband Tom ended up with a

two-person kayak and an expensive bottle of cognac from Louie’s in their yard. “We put the kayak on our Four Runner, and we took the cognac.” They headed to friends’ homes that had flooded.

“We took the kayak and started paddling to our friends’ houses and let them have a belt of this bottle of cognac. And I took these pieces from my friends: ‘this is the last photograph of my mother or grandfather,’ and I took those mementos and photographs.”

She worked for free to return them in better, beautiful condition.

“The reality of it is: if you think it’s too far gone, it might be, but it probably isn’t. I can do some pretty miraculous things.”

Since opening BIG, Feinberg has been doing everything from multi-piece framing projects, to meticulously restoring portraits and paintings.

She explains the process of restoring photographs: “I had a client whose photograph was stuck to glass and we took a photograph of it, and the print came back better than the original. … So it’s done in generations, so to speak.”

“Painting restoration is actually the easiest for me,” she said. “It seems like it would be harder, but it’s kind of second nature. You aren’t going through generations and generations of printing and then fixing, printing and then fixing, like with photo restorations. For me, if I’m doing a hand-painted restoration, it’s painting a painting, which is what I love.”

“I have my village — I have a lot of support and happy customers, and there is a lot of momentum here.”

Feinberg has done work for local heroes and celebrities, from a Conch Republic flag signed by all of the first responders from Irma brought to BIG by Dan Bensley and Jon Crane of Monroe County Corrections Facilities, to restoring personal artifacts. Local musician Howard Livingston came in with his wife Cindy and had photographs of his father and aunt, as well as his high school graduation, restored. Her local following is loyal.

She offers advice to Keys residents: “One of the reasons it’s needed down here is the air is salty: so bring it in every few years, have it cleaned, have it re-matted. Materials are always getting better, getting cleaner.

Refresh it, just like you would your carpet or your clothes.”

Feinberg admits: “But I’m obsessive about that. … I believe in saving art.”

T

he Casa Marina, Henry Flagler’s grand hotel on the south side of Key West, is known as a sort of oasis at the end of the road. In 1912, Flagler arrived in town on his new railroad, and he declared he would build a resort on the island. Though the hotel wasn’t completed until after his death, were Flagler to visit the Waldorf Astoria’s Casa Marina today, he’d likely feel quite comfortable in HMF Sidecar. HMF, the swanky hotel bar re-launched just last month, nods to yesteryear, and it’s currently dressed in evergreen and twinkling lights for the holidays. My favorite was Dean’s take on the gimlet, using bison grass vodka, lime, St. Germaine, apple juice (!), and a touch of simple syrup. Both cocktails were wellbalanced and went down almost frighteningly easily. The menu also boasts seasonal favorites, like the Sweet Potato Pie, with Angel’s Envy bourbon, sweet potato puree, cinnamon and egg whites, which sounds like Thanksgiving in a glass.

IMMIGRATION GETS ATTENTION GRASSROOTS GROUP FORMS IN KEY WEST

T

he Peter Brown case, which we reported on last week, has put the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and its relationship with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in the local and national news. The ACLU has taken up Brown’s case, alleging that he was unlawfully detained and verbally mistreated in the custody of Monroe County Detention Center.

Brown’s case, however — one of mistaken identity, wherein he was detained under (ultimately erroneous) order of Homeland Security — is an outlier.

More common are the cases of the 50 to 60 detainees being held as inmates of ICE in the custody of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The arrangement for these people, who are held for immigration purposes, has existed between ICE and the sheriff’s office since the 1990s. The federal government pays Monroe County (not the sheriff’s office) $87 a day for each detainee.

The Census Bureau puts Monroe County’s immigrant population at 18.5 percent in 2017 and reports that nearly a quarter of our county’s households speak a language other than English at home.

So, immigrants are an essential part of the fabric of the Monroe County population, even more so in Key West, where service and hospitality industry jobs are a primary economic driver — and are often filled by immigrants.

A group of Key Westers has taken a particular interest in the difficulties faced by immigrants in Monroe County.

The Keys Immigrant Coalition (KIC) is a grassroots group that grew out of the Women’s March Florida Keys Chapter.

Natalia Duke, a local community organizer, has been a driving force in advocacy for immigrants, women, people of color and the places where these groups intersect.

KIC serves as a sort of interlocutor between organizations that can provide services.

Duke and other members of the coalition have held panels about immigrant justice and collaborated with organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Florida Immigration Coalition to learn about policy and educate the populace.

“We collaborated with other organizations and formed this new organization with that as its sole focus — what we can do to support and uplift our immigrant community,” said Duke. She and her collaborators have met with a local immigration attorney as well, to plan their next steps.

KIC recently was able to visit the immigration detention facility at the jail. “We were able to see the facilities which are part of the jail,” Duke said, “and we were able to speak to some of the detainees there.

The officers we dealt with were helpful and informative during the walk-through.”

Right now, the focus of KIC is to improve the lives and situations of immigrants in the Keys.

“We are a small group,” she said, “and since we’re a new organization, we’re trying to see how we can be most effective. ... We have limited resources, whereas in Miami they have larger nonprofits.” To begin with, KIC is collaborating to host legal clinics and informational panels.

“So if it’s bridging connections with other groups that should come down and offer support, then great,” said Duke.

“If there is a way to set up weekly visitation, to offer some ease from isolation, and have contact with folks just as a humanitarian effort, then great. …

We’ll also be raising money for lawyers’ fees, commissary fees at the jail, and so forth.”

“We’re trying to support and make sure they have resources to not live in fear and in the shadows,” she said.

“People should know they have constitutional rights being on this land and in this country.”

BOW WOW 5TH ANNUAL PARADE OF PAWS SET

is the season for barking. The 5th annual Parade of Paws is set for Saturday, Dec.15 at the Higgs Dog Park. One of the Florida Keys SPCA’s largest events, the parade is expected to attract more than 200 locals and their four-legged family members to support the Animal Care Fund of the homeless animals in the Lower Keys.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Santa will be available to pose with the whole family, along with live entertainment and local vendors showcasing their wares for holiday shopping. The crowning of the King, Queen and Royal Court will be held at 11 a.m. for those pets in the area that have been fundraising for the animals of the FKSPCA. Admission is free to this kidfriendly, pet-friendly event. All proceeds benefit the animals of the Florida Keys SPCA. ver wonder how sick and cold turtles are transported? The answer is by private plane, in banana boxes, covered with bath towels.

Thirty-two Kemp’s ridley sea turtles arrived at the Marathon airport on Dec. 11. The turtles were stranded in Massachusetts after the stunning cold of Winter Storm Diego earlier this week. Rescued by the New England Aquarium in Boston, they were sent to the Florida Keys to be rehabilitated.

“Thankfully only two were in critical condition and those are in shallow water. The rest are in the large tank and doing well,” said the Turtle Hospital’s Bette Zirkelbach. “Only about half of them were really sick. The other half were already eating.”

The turtle’s medical records were emailed ahead of their arrival, and each turtle was marked with a day-glo orange number.

“As with patients in a hospital, we need to be able to identify the individual,” Zirkelbach said. “There’s a reason for those numbers.”

Zirkelback said the situation in the Northeast is dire.

“They are reporting more than 700 turtles dead, but they can’t keep up with the count,” she said.

Zirkelbach praised the coordinated effort to get the sick turtles to Marathon, including the ability to track the

plane. “We had the tail numbers and used flightaware.com. … It’s a little like the way everyone tracks Santa on Christmas Eve.” The turtles were delivered courtesy of pilot Chuck Yankee in coordination with Turtles Fly Too, a nonprofit.

Representative Sophia Costa said more flights to other destinations also are in the works to get all the cold-stunned turtles to treatment.

“I just finished flying three wolves on Monday,” said Yankee, adding tongue-in-cheek that he had his wife’s permission to make the turtle trip in his Pilatus PC-12. The trek started on Dec. 10 in Thomasville, Georgia, one of Yankee’s homeports. He picked up his co-pilot Mike Lalley in Atlanta, and then they flew to Marshfield, Mass. They made a stop to refuel before continuing on to Marathon.

How were the passengers?

“Pretty quiet. They flapped their flippers a little at the beginning but that was it,” he said, cheerfully.

ABOUT KEMP’S TURTLES Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are named after Key West’s Richard Moore Kemp (1825-1908). He was the first to send a specimen to Samuel Garman at Harvard in 1880. An avid naturalist and fisherman, he lived at 601 Caroline Street, now the Cypress House Hotel. William Kemp, brother of Richard, introduced the sponge industry from Key West to the New York market and they became prosperous from this business.

The etymology of the name “ridley” itself is unknown.

PAWS OFTEN STEAL HEARTS POSH GALA FOR FKSPCA DAZZLES

here were mermaids, fascinators, tropical flowers, talking birds and beautiful ladies twirling in full formal skirts. We aren’t talking about the latest Pixar movie, but rather the 6th Annual POSH Gala at Audubon House on Dec. 6.

POSH is a collaboration among four-leggedloving organizations of the Keys, to raise money for the Florida Keys SPCA, as well as spend an evening dancing, dining and drinking under the stars at the Audubon House.

The labyrinthine garden makes a perfect setting for mixing and mingling, with photo ops, a mobile boutique of fascinators, an impressive table of imported cigars, and bars and hors d’oeurves galore. There was also a silent auction, and standout donors were honored for their contributions. Last but not least, Ben Hennington of the Sunset Social Drinking Club led The Yat Pack from New Orleans while guests danced the night away.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? That high school goes extremely fast, so you have to enjoy every moment.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you? Varsity soccer and lacrosse are important to me because my teams are like family, and I love playing the sports. NHS and Mu Alpha Theta are important to me because I’m academically driven.

Beta, Zonta and A4TW are important to me because community service is really rewarding. Executive board is important because I want to help my class thrive this year.

What are your plans after high school?

I am planning to go to college.

What do you hope to be remembered for at KWHS? I want to be remembered for being an involved, happy, and honest person.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? Watching ’80s movies with my mom.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? I don’t know yet, because I want to explore life in other places, but I do love Key West.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Graduate from college, have a job that makes me happy, travel around the world.
