rgent issues on the ocean await action. At Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, scientists, explorers and ocean stewards are working to find answers in an effort to enhance the environment for generations to come.

Mote Marine Laboratory’s first annual Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration is set for Saturday, Dec. 1 at Founders Park in Islamorada. The fun and activities go on from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. See pages 16-17 for the event map and guide.

Mote is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution made up of renowned scientists who believe that conservation and sustainable use of oceans originates with research and education. Beginning in a tiny shed in a small town, Mote’s efforts have expanded to include a gamut of programs, campuses and outreach.

Mote’s history Mote first opened its doors as Cape Haze Marine Laboratory in 1955 in Placida. The lab was later renamed to honor William R. Mote and the contributions his family and he made that helped them grow in size and reputation. What began as a small operation in a one-room building on Florida’s west coast has grown exponentially.

Mote was founded on three basic principles: passion, philanthropy and partnership.

Originally focused on sharks, Mote’s research grew to include studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and on the environment, the health of wild fisheries, developing sustainable and successful fish restocking techniques and food production technologies and the development of ocean technology to help us better understand the health of the environment.

Today, more than 200 staff members, including more than 30 Ph.D. scientists, call the lab home. From its Sarasota base of operations, Mote has conducted research on six of the world’s seven continents. Education programs engage students in science and learning locally, nationally and internationally, thus creating a more ocean literate society.

Mote in the Keys In the Keys, Mote has the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s EcoDiscovery Center in Key West. Inside, visitors can view the Mote Living Reef Exhibit that educates on the public and private collaborations to tackle complex issues of preservation and enhancing the marine environment. The exhibits include interactive displays and live animals that highlight the reef environment and the work of Mote scientists.

The Eco-Discovery Center helps NOAA, federal partners and Mote Marine Laboratory reach the public with information on how people can help in protecting and conserving the coral reef ecosystem and its many interrelated components stretching from the ocean depths to the mainland. The center, located at 33 East Quay St., is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Also in the Keys is Mote’s International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration. Located in the lower Keys, the center has easy access to a variety of habitats including reefs, seagrass meadows, mangrove forests and communities. Research and education programs conducted at the center include coral reef restoration, coral reef science and monitoring, marine aquaculture research and ocean acidification.

Mote has also added its presence to the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center with a coral reef expedition exhibit.

ATTACKING DISASTERS Two ecological disasters — a disease outbreak across Florida’s coral reefs and a toxic red tide bloom in the Gulf of Mexico — require immediate action. Mote Marine Laboratory is working toward science-based solutions.

Florida has the planet’s thirdlargest, shallow-water coral reef system. Despite serious losses of living coral, our reefs continue to draw $6.3 billion to Florida’s economy, supporting 70,000 local jobs and helping to protect coastlines from storm impacts such as strong waves. Restored reefs could offer even more.

However, in the last four decades, Florida’s indigenous corals have declined in some areas by more than 90 percent, with some species losing more than 97 percent of their populations.

Today, Florida’s coral reefs face a devastating ecological catastrophe: a widespread, multiyear outbreak of coral tissue-loss disease. The pathogen(s) must still be identified, and the disease is difficult to contain.

Mote scientists have a plan: - Study which coral species and genotypes are naturally resilient, determine which are ready to outplant in restoration projects, and outplant them strategically. Study outplants to improve future restoration efforts.

- Study the bacteria associated with corals, surrounding water and in sediments to understand the presence and movements of the pathogen(s).

- Examine the timeline of the disease moving throughout the Florida reef tract and quantify which location and species that have been more susceptible.

- Use a technique whose application has been pioneered at Mote to speed growth in a nursery, and then “re-skinning” a dead 100-year-old coral skeleton.

n the evening of March 14, 1833, the schooner North Carolina struck Pickles Reef.

The first wrecker on scene was Joshua B. Smith. Unbeknownst to George McIntyre, master of the North Carolina, Smith was part of a consortium of wreckers associated with nearby Indian Key. Included in the consortium were the master of the Brilliant, Austin Packer, and the dubious wrecker king of Indian Key, Jacob Housman. Housman persuaded McIntyre to let him represent the interests of the North Carolina in the salvage claim proceedings. For his services, he would be paid a fee of 5 percent of the negotiated award. He also persuaded McIntyre to forgo the 90-mile trip to Key West and arbitrate the claim at the more convenient Indian Key. For Housman’s services as agent of the North Carolina, he was paid $156.45. In addition, Indian Key arbitrators awarded the consortium $3,129, of which Housman received a cut, too.

oberto Alonso travels the island chain frequently. Most recently, he’s been educating clients and potential clients about their Medicare options and the services offered by his company, Borland & Associates Insurance, based out of Key Largo.

“The annual election period ends on Friday, Dec. 7,” he said.

Alonso said his 14-year insurance career has been dedicated to pairing his clients with the best health products to meet their needs.

“This is not about product peddling,” he said, “it’s about putting clients’ needs first. It’s my mission to become my clients’ trusted advisor.”

Medicare is available to people 65 years or older, and certain younger people with disabilities or people suffering end-stage renal disease. There are four parts — Part A, hospital insurance; Part B, medical insurance for doctor services; and Part D for prescription services. Part C is a little different — Medicare Advantage is offered by private health insurance companies and includes Parts A, B and prescription coverage in addition to services like dental, hearing and vision.

Here are three questions Alonso said he routinely encounters: 1. Can I keep my doctor?

If you have Part C, a Medicare Advantage plan that is an HMO plan, you are required to use network doctors. With a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, patients can usually visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. The Medicare PPO falls somewhere in the middle — you pay less if you use in-network doctors, more if you use out-of-network doctors.

2. Will prescription drugs be covered?

Original Medicare will not cover prescriptions. Advantage plans, and those with Part D plans, will find most of their costs are covered depending on the formula. Alonso said a consultation is incredibly important here. “We can go online and look to see if a particular medicine is going to be covered by the prescription plan,” he said.

3. When can I enroll in Medicare?

If you already have Social Security benefits, you’re automatically enrolled in the original Medicare, if you are 65 or older. BUT you may have to pay a late fee if you don’t enroll in Medicare when you’re first eligible during your initial enrollment period. The initial enrollment window starts three months before the user turns 65 and three months after.

Meet with Disaster Case Manager Nov. 30 Still struggling and in need of help after Hurriance Irma? Help is here for residents of Islamorada. On Friday, Nov. 30, residents can meet with a disaster case manager from Compass 82 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Founders Park Community Center. Compass 82 is a nonprofit specializing in navigating disaster recovery resources. Through a grant from Volunteer Florida and FEMA, trained Compass 82 disaster case managers can help with your recovery and there is no cost to any resident.

Author signing at library Dec. 8 Meet author Jason Korsiak, who celebrated Christmas for an entire year and wrote all about his experience (and the lessons it taught him) in “Christmas Addict,” the journal of a man who loved Christmas a little too much. Korsiak will be reading and signing copies of his book from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Islamorada library.

Korsiak is the author of eight books. A Queens native, he grew up in Lakeland, FL and attended Rochelle School of the Arts before moving to Florida’s Nature Coast, where he currently resides. He is youth pastor of Joining Hands Mission United Methodist Church in New Port Richey.

Celebration of Eyster set for Dec. 10 The Matecumbe Historical Trust invites you to celebrate the life of Irving R Eyster on what would have been his 100th birthday. He continues to “live on” via the trust he established.

The posthumous celebration of Eyster will be held on Monday, Dec. 10 at the Islamorada Moose Lodge. Hors d’oeuvres will be served starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by an audiovisual presentation of Mr. Eyster’s life and a presentation showing some of the most unusual and fascinating items ever found on our islands.

Eyster, a well-known historian and archaeologist, collected items and preserved them for more than 60 years. He was known as Mr. History, as his knowledge of our history was extensive. He excavated Indian Key in the 1970s, was the foremost authority on the island and was known as Mr. Indian Key. The presentation will include items from the early Indians, shipwrecks, diving, Flagler’s Railway, Indian Key, lighthouses, maps, documents, and some rare and unusual items.

The event asks a donation of $30 per person.

Actors ready for opening night

holiday classic is set to take stage Friday at the Murray Nelson Government and Cultural Center, as the Key Players bring a 1940s radio broadcast to life.

For months, the 24 actors who are a part of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” have practiced their roles inside the Lions Club. On Monday, they convened inside the Cultural Center’s theater for their first full dress rehearsal.

Viewers who come to the show will get a glimpse into the life of George Bailey and how it was changed by an angel on Christmas Eve. The play is written by Joe Landry, produced by Patrice and Paul Messina and directed

by Jonelle Kop. “We have all live sound effects,” Kop said. “We have everything from car horns to train whistles to police sirens to splashing water when George falls through the ice.”

Actors in the play range from stage veterans to first-timers. In particular, the play will see a number of children – the youngest being 7. Actor Tommy Chambers, who plays various roles, says it’s a nice surprise to see the number of young ones in the play.

“We’ve got some really good people and young ones involved,” Chambers said. “Normally we don’t have a lot of little children.”

While creating a play takes a huge amount of work, Kop says it’s a lot of fun. All of those who auditioned are in the show in one form or another.

“We have 12 who have not been on stage with Key Players before,” she said. “It’s really nice. It’s going to be a phenomenal show.”

“I’m really nervous but I’m really excited,” she said.

Matt Pontefroct is taking part in his second play. Viewers will see him playing three characters.

“Throughout the rehearsals I’ve learned so much about the characteristics of these people and how to play them,” he said.

As for the play’s message, Kop says people will see that it really is a “wonderful life.”

“Even though things might not seem as good as you want, that doesn’t mean that the way other people see it is much more gratifying,” she said.

“As far as Key Players is concerned, it’s just bringing joy to the community and that was important for us during the hurricane,” she continued. “We wanted to give people a break from the reality that isn’t as good as we’d like. That’s why we do this, for joy and laughter and, in this case, Christmas spirit.”

Chambers says attendees will have a lot of fun as they view the play.

“It is a wonderful life. Just don’t take yourself so seriously,” he said.

“And there’s lots of energy on stage.

You’ll see that.”

Performances will take place Nov. 30-Dec. 2 and Dec. 6-8. Showing times are 7:30 p.m. with a Dec. 2 matinee at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the community will gather for the ninth annual tree lighting and community appreciation event at the Murray Nelson Government Center. Beginning at 5 p.m. and going to 9 p.m., the evening will see a host of activities for children and families.

At 8:30 p.m., the 35-foot tree outside the center will be lit up.

Also going on during the evening will be story time, with volunteers reading books to the children. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be on hand for pictures.

An ice skating rink will be present for kids and adults to enjoy. Crafts and cookie decorating will allow children to create their own little masterpiece.

There will also be a secret Santa store for children, assisted by Santa’s helpers, to purchase gifts for family and friends.

In total, there will be 25 vendors on hand, of which 11 are local businesses that’ll help kick off the holiday shopping. Eleven nonprofits will have stands to provide information about their groups. Two food vendors will serve pulled pork and Greek as well as Italian ice.

Story time will be one of the many activities at this year’s Light Up Key Largo, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Murray Nelson Government Center.

Hot dogs and hamburgers and corn will be available. And as always, every child will get a free hot dog and drink.

hose looking for a good meal and a prime view of the sunset have a place close by to do just that.

At MM 82 bayside, a mermaid perched alongside the road greets patrons to The Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar. As people make their way back to the restaurant, they’re left with many seating choices along the water. Come during the evening and you have one of the nicest – if not the best – sunset views.

“It’s a beautiful setting for our restaurant,” said John Maloughney, general manager. “We have entertainment seven days a week. We have one of the better happy hours you’ll find any place around town seven days.”

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant presents a relaxing, casual dining experience.

Breakfast menu items include shrimp and grits, country breakfast as well as the Conch Republic breakfast, which includes a generous portion of fried dolphin, two eggs cooked your way, grits or home fries and toast.

For lunch and dinner, begin with an appetizer such as tuna nachos or the bacon-wrapped shrimp. Tuna nachos are made from diced tuna on wonton chips with seaweed salad, sweet soy, wasabi cream and sriracha sauce. The bacon-wrapped shrimp skewers include 16 to 20 shrimp with applewood-smoked bacon and sweet Thai chili sauce.

For the main meal, try one of the many sandwiches on the menu such as Lorelei’s World Famous Fish Sandwich. The menu also features the Alaska snow crab platter, chicken lemon caper, 12-ounce New York strip steak and the “Own Catch Dinner.”

For dessert, try the world-famous Key lime pie that’s made from scratch or the bistro chocolate fudge cake.

While Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar attracts visitors, Maloughney notes that it’s also one of the best fishing bars in the world, as Lorelei sits right next to a large harbor of boats.

“It’s a place that beckoned the sailors into the bar,” he said.

SUPPORTING A TIKES POKER RUN TO BENEFIT TOYS FOR TOTS

motorcycle poker run slated for next month will support the 2018 U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots.

The program collects new, unwrapped toys (no stuffed animals or plush toys, please) for the local community’s less fortunate children. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to the children that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

The poker run is set for Saturday, Dec. 15. The Marineand police-escorted parade leaves Gilbert’s Resort at noon with stops at Pilot House, Dillon’s Pub & Grill and the final stop in the Oceanview. A 5-Ton USMC truck will be decorated with banners announcing and thanking supporters and acknowledging sponsors and displaying their logos.

At the Oceanview, there will be live music and a pig roast & BBQ by Captains Charlie and Eric Scoble. The winning poker hand, which will earn a cash prize, will be determined at 4:30 p.m.

Toys for Tots collection sites are located throughout the Keys and toys will be distributed from Key Largo to Key West and all Keys in-between. certified prescriber who broke away from Western medicine to focus more on prevention is set to speak about medical marijuana next month in Key

Largo.

Dr. Gregory R. Sonn has served and cared for patients throught Monroe County for years.

He’s dual boarded in family practice and palliative medicine and he worked several years with Dr. Gregory Sonn a care provider in Fort Lauderdale upon comwill give a lecture Dec. 5 at Holiday pleting his residency in family practice.

His time caring for geriatric patients led him Inn Key Largo to his palliative and hospice medicine certification. In 2008, he began working with Hope Healthcare Service as chief medical officer. He later worked with Vitas Innovative Health Care to expand hospice services in the Florida Keys.

In 2015, however, Sonn initiated an integrative medical practice with the goal to prevent, treat and educate patients on how to be healthier using natural products instead of chemical intervention. Sonn legally can prescribe or recommend legal forms of cannabinoids to his patients in need.

Sonn, a believer in the benefits of medical marijuana, wants state lawmakers to support patient’s rights and allow further deregulation. Sonn has clinics in Fort Myers, Islamorada and Key West.

The seminar, which will be held at the Holiday Inn in Key Largo on Wednesday, Dec. 5, will delve into topics such as dealing with pain, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction. Before the lecture at 6:30 p.m., dispensaries will be on hand to supply information and answer questions.

“This will be the first medical marijuana seminar to really go into much detail as possible for the public,” said Tracy Timura, Iona Cannabis Clinic director. “It’s really going to be informative for everyone.”

GREEN ALTERNATIVE Freebee service begins today JIM McCARTHY

Starting today, the Miami-based electric transportation company Freebee will be providing free rides within a section of the Upper Keys.

The ride service is embarking on a six-month trial to see if it’s worth bringing to the area on a permanent basis. Freebee provides the service to the public with environmentally friendly electric vehicles.

The company proposed the on-request transit service for Upper Matecumbe Key with plans and hopes to reduce vehicles on the road. At the same time, the service is a “green” alternative to visit local shops and restaurants. All people need to do is download the Freebee app, request a ride and jump onboard.

The Freebee electric vehicle will begin transporting people in Upper Matecumbe Key today. It’s part of a six-month trial to gauge interest and popularity. CONTRIBUTED

“We are very excited to be joining the Islamorada community with our launch today,” said John Januscz, economic development manager for Freebee.

The Village Council approved the six-month trial for the Freebee service for Upper Matecumbe Key. Council members will vote on ratifying the contract during the meeting tonight (Thursday, Nov. 29).

The service is limited to Upper

Matecumbe Key for the trial period since vehicles can only go 35 mph and cannot travel across the bridges of the Overseas Highway. The service will be evaluated and expansion, with vehicles that can travel on the highway, will be considered.

“We’ll see what the popularity is among the community and riders who try this service and see how businesses like it,” said Mary Swaney, public information officer.

Freebee will have two vehicles providing transportation on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. To request a ride, customers must first download the free Freebee app. On the app, customers request a pickup and can view deals for local businesses.

illage council members will start their new two-year terms today once Monroe County Judge Sharon Hamilton swears them in. Then it’s on to electing mayor and vice mayor.

Last year saw Chris Sante serving as mayor while Deb Gillis was vice mayor. With Sante no longer on the council, the position is up for grabs.

Several council members believe that Gillis will be the next one to take over. The mayor chairs the village council meetings and serves as the primary representative at public events.

“It has usually been the sitting vice mayor being moved up,” Councilman Jim Mooney said. “But that is not necessarily always the case. I do think it will probably be so this time around.”

Councilman Ken Davis also suspects that it’s going to be Gillis’ position. As for vice mayor, he believes it could be Councilman Mike Forster.

“He’s made clear that he aspires to go to county commission, and I think that the vice mayor position would be a good launching pad,” he said.

Council members say they’re looking forward to working on a number of things as a new council begins.

“I’d say getting an even greater understanding of issues and how I can help as a councilman move issues quicker,” Davis said.

Mooney says he’s looking forward to continue revamping the permit system.

Councilman Mike Forster says he’s looking to move forward on unfinished business including affordable housing, water quality, and fighting to lower inflated insurance rates.

“Also, finally completing a master plan on the Fills as far as proper carrying capacity so it remains inclusive and not exclusive by bringing forward a plan to man this popular area with metered parking to pay for an attendant,” he said.

“I also think that we can focus on some goals we set last year, such as breakwater improvement and the public works building,” he said. “Workforce housing should continue to be a focus as well.”

aking up at three o’clock, Cheryl Meads gets ready for her day as she prepares to hop in a Jeep en route to a local school in the Philippines for morning assembly.

For Meads, ministers and pastors, the day’s spent journeying from school to school in the country – from metro Manila to the outskirts – to speak with students in groups large and small.

While mission trips do many things, Meads says her trip was focused on the young population as she spoke to her experience and relayed messages to make good choices, never give up and dream big.

The Philippines’ constitution allows visitors access to schools as long as the visit is organized and there’s a permit and a purpose. Meads traveled with an evangelical group that taught and preached the basic Christian doctrines based on John 3:16.

“There’s a lot of problems related to poverty,” Meads said of the country. “Drugs are a problem and prostitution is a real problem. We talk to them about working hard, respecting their teachers, studying hard and dreaming big dreams.

“Any particular school, we could be speaking to 4,000 students or as few as 12,” Meads continued. “It just depends on whether we’re in metro Manila or on the outskirts.”

There’s another message Meads says she gives to the students, and it stems from her own challenges dating back to her younger years where she was left homeless before high school.

“I struggled to learn to read.

I have dyslexia,” she said. “My message to the children is we’re all made special and having a learning disability is not the end of the world. You just have to work harder and find purpose God has for life.”

The trip included a stop at Clark Air Base, a former U.S. air base that’s used as an airport by the Philippines.

Housing on the former base is used for various purposes – one being an elementary school. Meads says she hopped into a Jeep one morning with others to go to the base.

“We took off the road, up a mountain, across a river and up to a group of native Filipinos in a tiny village,” she said. “They were surprised when the Jeep showed up.”

She entered the schoolhouse, and

unlike her other talks where thousands listened, she sat on the floor with the class to speak to them. Her message was similar, in a way, to her discussions with other crowds: Be different.

Meads says she’s planning another two-week trip in January.

“Missions feed people, build houses, care for people medically and many other things,” Meads said “We talk to them about faith and we talk to them about choices, believing in themselves, being kind, having goals and living lives of purpose.”

ere you ever forgotten or left behind the way Kevin McCallister was in “Home Alone?” I was.

When there’s a house full of people frantically trying to get out the door, it’s bound to happen. While I wasn’t pushed to the attic like Kevin was in the first “Home Alone,” I was left alone in a crib as my family rushed out the door of Wilderness Lodge in Disney to the one and only Magical Kingdom.

There I stayed, and I was rather content, as my mom reminisces back on the day that had her reacting like Kevin’s mom Kate as she’s on the plane to Paris.

Back she came. And like McCallister himself, life was okay as I sat there alone.
