BRIEFLY Marathon girl continues to improve after accident

Snook season closes on Saturday, Dec. 1

Samantha Schofield’s health is improving slowly. The 11-year-old Marathon girl was hit by a car on Nov. 15 when the family — including twin sister Sabrina Schofield — were crossing Overseas Highway on foot with a group of people near The Hurricane.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up in her name. Visit www.gofundme.com and search Samantha Schofield Fund. Already, $11,920 has been raised by 107 people in 6 days.

Brutus Seafood is also having a fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 29. A portion of the proceeds from every dinner order — whether dine in, take out or delivery — will be added to the fund for Samantha’s care. Restaurant owner Elise Mucha said she plans another fundraiser in about three weeks.

The recreational harvest season for snook closes Dec. 1 in federal and most state waters of the Gulf, including all of Monroe County and Everglades National Park.

Snook, as well as redfish, remain catch-and-release only in state waters from the Hernando/Pasco county line through Gordon Pass in Collier County (includes Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County) through May 10, 2019, in response to the impacts of red tide.

Snook outside of that area will reopen to harvest March 1, 2019. Anglers may continue to catch and release snook during the closed season.

Atlantic state and federal waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River, will close Dec. 15 through Jan. 31, 2019, reopening to harvest Feb. 1, 2019.

he woman who was found dead by a fisherman on Nov. 21 afternoon in a wooded area just north of the Vaca Cut Bridge in Marathon has been identified as 51-year-old Michelle Rena Osborne.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Osborne, formerly of Janesville, Wisconsin, was homeless and living in Marathon. Her date of birth is Nov. 11, 1967.

Autopsy results indicate Osborne was strangled and sexually assaulted.

The case remains under investigation.

Steven Matthew Wolf, 58, was charged with second-degree murder, failure to report a death and evidence tampering in Osborne’s death. Wolf remains in jail with no bail.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay thanked Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward, Assistant State Attorney Colleen Dunne as well as Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Criminal Investigations Unit detectives as well as road patrol deputies who all have been active in resolving the case in a timely fashion.

“Our partners with the State Attorney’s Office have been working with us to move this case along quickly and provide closure not only to Mrs. Osborne’s family, but to the people of Marathon as well,” said Ramsay. “This is a very disturbing and sad case, but I’m thankful to our detectives and law enforcement partners, all of whom have been working on this case nonstop since Mrs. Osborne was found.”

Detectives were called to the scene about 2 p.m. Nov. 21 after an angler fishing from shore reported finding the nude body. Osborne appeared to have been dragged off a walking trail into nearby brush. Detectives found parts of a vehicle and damage to trees and brush at the scene which suggested a vehicle had traversed the area. Detectives used those parts to find a van at the Marathon Kmart parking lot hours later. Wolf was detained on scene for questioning at that time.

Detectives found blood in the van that tested positive as human.

The source of that blood is part of the ongoing investigation.

LITMUS TEST Challenge filed to Marathon’s extra 300 units SARA MATTHIS sara@keysweekly.com

A

Marathon resident has filed an administrative challenge to the City of Marathon’s plan to add 300 affordable housing units. The additional development rights are part of 1,300 awarded by former Gov. Rick Scott to Monroe County following Hurricane Irma. So far, the City of Marathon, Key West and Village of Islamorada have begun the process of amending the comp plans to accommodate the additional units.

Cecelia Mattino alleges the additional development will impact hurricane evacuation and that residents of the new units aren’t necessarily part of the workforce, nor are the units truly affordable.

In a press release issued

by Friends of the Lower Keys, Mattino said, “Residents of the new housing to be developed under Marathon’s ordinance don’t even have to be members of the workforce. It’s another one of those boondoggles where developers can build all of the units at the highest end of affordable housing – the most profitable for them – but the real working people of Marathon STILL won’t have affordable housing.” The press release also has endorsements from the Florida Keys Environmental Fund.

The case will be heard by an administrative law judge from the state Department of Administrative Hearings. Mattino is represented by attorney Robert Hartsell; attorney Richard Grosso — a wellknown challenger of Florida growth management policy — is also on the legal team. If the challenge is rejected, an appeal could be filed with the First District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee.

The petition for administrative hearing states that Mattino lives on 80th Street in Marathon, and that she is the mother and primary caretaker of her 100 percent disabled daughter. Property record searches indicate that the home belongs to her daughter, but the record is sealed. In addition to the claims above, the petition said hurricane evacuations are dangerous for the daughter, and stressful for Mattino.

“The City received a petition to our Comp Plan amendment late yesterday and is currently reviewing,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey. “It is our policy to refrain from commenting on pending litigation.”

Monroe County still has not accepted the 300 extra affordable building rights from the state, although the commission has not ruled it out, either. It is still under study, according to Monroe County attorney Bob Shillinger.

“We’re going to be watching to see what arguments are raised,” said Shillinger.

“I would not be surprised if the other cities who move forward to accept the building rights would face similar challenges.”

JUST SAY NO to 1,300 MORE ROGOs

T

he State is offering the Keys 1,300 more ROGO building allocations. But this wouldn’t solve our workforce housing problem. It would add more danger to hurricane evacuation, more hassles with daily traffic, more high-density apartment complexes, greater strain on our infrastructure, and it would undermine the growth limitations which preserve what makes the Keys unique.

The 1,300 more ROGOs would be dangerous in a hurricane.

They would overcrowd evacuation and slow it down for all of us.

The 1,300 ROGOs are intended for housing about 4,000 additional residents who would be required to “early evacuate” 48 hours before landfall. Most Keys residents have a 24-hour evacuation deadline. But there’s nothing to enforce this “early evacuation” deadline and we all know many people wait as long as they can to evacuate.

As we saw from Hurricanes Michael, Harvey and Andrew, storms can intensify more quickly than forecasters predict.

The 1,300 more ROGOs would undermine well-established legal growth limitations which have protected the beauty and natural resources of the Keys for more than 30 years.

If ROGO’s growth limitations are undermined, taxpayers could face millions of dollars in property rights judgments against the county.

Without the legal protection of ROGO, which is based on extensive scientific research and court-approved development limitations, many thousands more ROGOs could be added at any time.

We need real workforce housing for Keys residents. The county and the cities can offer tax relief, subsidies and interest-free loans to property owners willing to deed-restrict for workforce housing.

Strict illegal vacation rental enforcement would return more housing units to our workforce.

We have plenty of ROGOs which can be dedicated to new workforce housing. Adding more ROGOs just creates more problems.

Fourteen civic, environmental and neighborhood organizations, representing thousands of voters and property owners throughout the Keys, urge Monroe County and the cities: Just say no to 1,300 more ROGOs. Ryan oversees all things food at Hawks Cay Resort NELE KIRT

illiam Ryan is the executive chef at Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key. Its motto — “great service, great stay” — is probably more familiar to him than anybody else in the kitchens of seven food operations with 50 employees he oversees every day. During peak season, the restaurants and other food courts of Hawks Cay serve about 1,500 guests and feed about 300 employees.

Ryan took a winding road to the Keys. As a young man, he and his family moved around a lot. He went to 22 different schools and traveled through several states all the way to the U.S. Virgin Islands. He spent four years on St. John,four in St.Lucia in the Caribbean. And now he’s here, in the Florida Keys, hoping to stay longer.

Ryan is a graduate of culinary school in Vermont and has appeared in many prominent publications, including the New York Times and Gourmet magazine. This Chef of the Year of South Carolina has won multiple awards and accolades — gold and silver medals by American Culinary Federation, South Carolina Agriculture Award, and his restaurants are repeat winners in the Best of Marathon annual competition.

Chef William says work is more like a hobby for him. “I work because I like what I do.” He smiles and adds, “My staff thinks I’m crazy.” Junior Rodriguez, resort director of Hawks Cay, said, “Chef is the hardest working employee I have ever had. His cooking skills are over the top and no task is too big for him.”

Full name? William Ryan Birthplace? Akron, Ohio.

Do you love this job? I first fell in love with this career early on. I was just 15 years old when I started working at a Greek restaurant. It was crazy busy, hot kitchen flames everywhere, chefs yelling at one another. I earned only $2.95 an hour but I was “trapped” and this is all I have ever wanted to do from then on.

Did the resort just open a new restaurant? Yes, it opened Nov. 9 and is called “61 Prime” because we’re at MM 61 and serve USDA prime beef and fresh local seafood.

Where do you source the ingredients? We partner with local fishermen, farmers and growers who are as passionate about cuisine as we are.

We source local produce whenever possible and celebrate “fresh from Florida” local initiative.

What’s one unique entrée you serve? A cassoulet is a classic white bean dish simmered with duck confit and collard greens. We serve it with Key West pink shrimp and smoked tomato oil.

Can you tell us about the new Market Place concept? We are in the planning stage of our new “grab & go” concept. The attendants would prepare the food right here, in the Market Place, and guests can either dine in or take-out. “Coral Grill” will also open with a new menu including fresh healthy options.

When did you move to St. Lucia? That was 8 years ago. I worked in the Caribbean, first as an executive chef in Westin St. John, then in Tikaye Resort and Spa in St. Lucia.

Then back to the “real world” and closer to home? Yes, both my

parents and my wife’s parents are getting older and we moved back to U.S. My parents live outside of Orlando and my wife Ghislaine’s dad stays with us during the winter.

If you were to make a meal to a local celebrity, whom would it be and what would you cook? Well, I have cooked for George Bush, Celine Dion, Madeleine Albright, and Tony Robbins … but my favorite thing to cook is local fish or maybe giant diver scallops, caught by hand and harvested from the deep sea.

Just pan seared in butter with a pinch of local sea salt and a grind of fresh pepper with a creamy risotto.

What would you make at home after a long day’s work?

At home? My wife Ghislaine makes mean burritos. She is French. We’ve been married for 37 years.

Where would be your second favorite place to live beside the Keys? I am here because that’s where I want to be! I got a boat, I go spearfishing, and troll for mahi mahi. I caught 27 fish one day! I love the reefs and snorkeling.

Is cooking more like work or is it a hobby? It’s more like a hobby. I work because I like what I do. I don’t have to be here at 5 a.m., but I am. I never wake up and drag to work.

Could you describe the weirdest experience as far as dining or food requests go?

At a restaurant in South Carolina I prepared a customer an amuse-bouche (“mouth amuser” in French) to tickle his tastebuds before the meal. I made tuna tartare and served it on top a small vase filled with water and a live Japanese fighting fish swimming in it. Well, the man ate the tartar first and then drank the water and swallowed the fish.

What are you most proud of? I’m most proud of two things: my lifelong relationship with my wife and the awesome crew that I work with every single day at Hawks Cay.

“I’m very, very happy with it,” said Marathon resident Tedda Morris. “I hate going to the store this time of year. Plus, this way I don’t risk picking up any germs.”

For Morris, this will mean that ALL her groceries will be delivered.

She orders her non-perishables from Amazon, and now the perishables are delivered to her doorstep, too.

All Publix grocery stores and CVS drug stores in the Keys offer this service as of about two weeks ago.

“Publix delivery powered by Instacart is an extension of the premier customer service our customers have come to expect and love, from our store into their homes,” said Nicole Krauss, Publix spokeswoman for Southeast Florida. Krauss said delivery is a permanent part of Publix Super Markets’ customer service plan.

Delivery is reportedly available in every area of the Keys, according to Publix. But an Instacart spokesperson provided service areas that reveal a gap between Marathon and Big Coppitt Key. Delivery drivers work for Instacart, not Publix. Instacart, like Uber, is part of the “gig” economy emerging in the U.S., in which employees set their

own hours. The personal shoppers are paid per trip, and through tips. When placing an order on the app, users can select a window of time — say 6 to 7 p.m. — when the groceries will be delivered. Delivery drivers don’t wear specific uniforms, but do display a “shopper lanyard.”

It’s not free — there is a $3.99 service charge per order, a minimum order requirement of $35, and tip. Online reviewers caution there is a difference between the “service” fee and a tip — the amount applied to “service” goes to the company, not the shopper.

Instacart’s mobile app for Publix is organized just like the store. In other words, the fresh salsa can be found in the produce department alongside the bananas and bell peppers. It also has tabs for coupon deals and sales.

The app also “remembers” frequently ordered items to speed the process.

Customers can also sign up for an Instacart Express membership, which enables unlimited, free same-day delivery on orders of $35 or more. After a free trial period, Instacart Express membership is $9.99 a month or $99 a year. First time users can also enter the code HIFLORIDAKEYS (2/1/2019 expiration) at checkout to get $20 off an order of $35 or more, plus a free first time delivery.

“I was worried about produce because I’m picky, but everything (the shopper picked out) looked good,” said Marathon’s Beth Kunitz. “You can even chat with them if you need to add something or substitute something that may be out of stock. I probably won’t use it all the time, but it’s nice to have the option.”

According to glassdoor.com, Instacart drivers earn on average about $10 an hour. It’s not known whether the Instacart shoppers are local, or whether, like Uber drivers, they come down for the day from the mainland.

According to one Publix employee in the Middle Keys, the service is picking up speed. In the first few days, there were about two dozen orders placed. Since then, the numbers have gone up every day.

It’s likely to be a win-win situation: the convenience of delivery for those who want it, and less crowded stores for shoppers making their own purchases.

Community packs gift boxes for troops

A

n effort to be sure troops serving outside the U.S. have a holiday can use your help — with a donation of either cash, products or time.

In 2016, community helpers packed about 70 boxes of holiday cheer for troops stationed overseas. In 2019, organizers expect to pack well over 200 boxes.

This is the seventh year organizer Tony Daiuto has been involved.

“Last year, we did 220 boxes,” he said.

The effort is organized by Marathon Baptist Church and the community pitches in three ways: One, by donating cash for shipping expenses to get the boxes where they need to go; two, by donating goodies for the box (see sidebar below); and, three, by showing up on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. to help assemble the boxes at Mar-

athon Baptist Church, 10875 Overseas Highway (across from the old Walgreens).

Donations may be dropped off on packing day, or pick-up can be arranged by calling Tony Daiuto directly at 305-731-6040.

Please, no aerosol cans, and all liquids must be packed in a Ziploc bag.

WHAT’S NEEDED? • Toiletries: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, cotton swabs, shaving lotion, disposable razors, shampoo, individually packaged tissues, deodorant.

Three dates set for ‘International Carols’

T

he public is invited to attend the Lower Keys Community Choir and Keys Chamber Orchestra’s annual Christmas concerts on Monday, Dec. 10 at Big Pine Methodist Church, Big Pine Key; Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Venture Out Pavilion, Cudjoe Key; and Thursday, Dec. 13 at San Pablo Catholic Church, Marathon. All concerts are at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission cost to attend, but a free-will offering will be taken to cover expenses.

The featured work is “International Carol Suites” written and orchestrated by Mark Hayes.

International Carol Suites weaves together familiar and lesserknown carols of Western and Eastern Europe and the British Isles.

There will be several other Christmas pieces performed by the choir and orchestra.

The choir and orchestra are made up of local volunteers who live from Marathon to Key West.

They represent more than a dozen churches in the area, and have been offering Christmas and Easter concerts in the Lower Keys for more than 25 years. They are directed by Wayne Hulting, and the accompanist is Susan McCaffrey.

BRIEFLY School District summarizes student drug testing results

According to the Monroe County School district, 96 drug tests have been administered to high school students through the first week in November.

Athletes or students participating in cheerleading, marching band, dance team, swimming/diving, football, cross country and volleyball at each high school were randomly selected. Four tests came back positive, according to the lab. In order to retain student anonymity, the school district is not releasing a breakdown by school or sport.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host three National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) public scoping meetings for the Florida Keys Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Feasibility Study in the Keys next week.

The purpose of this study is to reduce potential damages caused by coastal storms and improve human safety and coastal resiliency in the Florida Keys. Issues to be addressed may include protection of critical infrastructure, reduction of structure damages, and evacuation route protection in response to the risks and effects of coastal storms and associated impacts such as sea level rise, storm surge, and extreme wind and tidal effects. The study area extends from the vicinity of Key Largo to Key West, Florida.

irca 1828, the French vessel Vigilant ran aground in skinny waters near Key Vaca. Two wreckers were hired to guide the Vigilant to safe harbor. In 1828, the closest harbor was Key Vaca’s Port Monroe, founded by Joshua Appleby and Captain John Fiveash some five years prior.

The vessel was safely delivered.

Among the cargo was $32,000 in specie (coins). Perhaps by coincidence, the wrecking sloop Sarah Isabella, captained by the dubious Jacob Housman, arrived at Port Monroe shortly thereafter. After “negotiations,�

Housman was hired to pilot the Vigilant from Port Monroe to Key West. It has been alleged that the negotiation included a financial agreement between the two men. For delivering the Vigilant to Key West, Housman was paid 75 percent of the value of the ship and its cargo. His cut from the $32,000 in coins alone would have left Housman with bulging pockets.

oberto Alonso travels the island chain frequently. Most recently, he’s been educating clients and potential clients about their Medicare options and the services offered by his company, Borland & Associates Insurance, based out of Key Largo.

“The annual election period ends on Friday, Dec. 7,” he said.

Alonso said his 14-year insurance career has been dedicated to pairing his clients with the best health products to meet their needs.

“This is not about product peddling,” he said, “it’s about putting clients’ needs first. It’s my mission to become my clients’ trusted advisor.”

Medicare is available to people 65 years or older, and certain younger people with disabilities or people suffering end-stage renal disease. There are four parts — Part A, hospital insurance; Part B, medical insurance for doctor services; and Part D for prescription services. Part C is a little different — Medicare Advantage is offered by private health insurance companies and includes Parts A, B and prescription coverage in addition to services like dental, hearing and vision.

Here are three questions Alonso said he routinely encounters: 1. Can I keep my doctor?

If you have Part C, a Medicare Advantage plan that is an HMO plan, you are required to use network doctors. With a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, patients can usually visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. The Medicare PPO falls somewhere in the middle — you pay less if you use in-network doctors, more if you use out-of-network doctors.

2. Will prescription drugs be covered?

Original Medicare will not cover prescriptions. Advantage plans, and those with Part D plans, will find most of their costs are covered depending on the formula. Alonso said a consultation is incredibly important here. “We can go online and look to see if a particular medicine is going to be covered by the prescription plan,” he said.

3. When can I enroll in Medicare?

If you already have Social Security benefits, you’re automatically enrolled in the original Medicare, if you are 65 or older. BUT you may have to pay a late fee if you don’t enroll in Medicare when you’re first eligible during your initial enrollment period. The initial enrollment window starts three months before the user turns 65 and three months after.

OXITEC WITHDRAWS EPA APPLICATION Company submits new application with second-generation tech

O

xitec announced its transition from its first-generation Aedes aegypti Friendly mosquito, also known as OX513A, to its second-generation (OX5034) Aedes aegypti mosquito. Oxitec has withdrawn its OX513A Experimental Use Permit (EUP) with the Environmental Protection Agency and plans to submit a new EUP for the second-generation OX5034 mosquito in the coming months.

According to Oxitec, the company is currently releasing the second-generation OX5034 mosquito in Brazil after receiving regulatory approval for field releases there.

“As we have said in the past, we are constantly looking at new technologies to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito,” said Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) Executive Director Andrea Leal. “We are closely monitoring the release of Oxitec’s secondgeneration mosquito in Brazil and look forward to seeing the results from those releases.”

Keys celebrate with five lighted boat parades Friday, Dec. 7

Saturday, Dec. 8

Stock Island Lighted Boat Parade is a free event. Activities begin at 5 p.m., with the parade scheduled for 7 p.m., and an after-party at 9 p.m. Guests will delight in seeing the bright lights on everything from tri-masted schooners to dinghies to the shrimp boats that call Stock Island home. The boat parade is presented by Sunset Watersports. Free viewing events at Stock Island Marina Village and Safe Harbor.

Blackwater Sound will shimmer as decorated boats parade along the shoreline in celebration of the holiday season; 55-foot yachts to single-person kayaks are to set sail at 7:30 p.m. The best viewing and libations are to be found at Sundowners, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, Senor Frijoles, the Marriott Key Largo Bay Resort and Caribbean Club, from MM 103 to MM 104. From dinghies to yachts, power and sail boats welcome! Parade starts at 6 p.m. from the west end of Boot Key Harbor and slowly winds its way east into the harbor toward Sombrero Marina Dockside, back through the harbor and ending at Lazy Days South at Marathon Marina for a post-parade award party at about 8:30 p.m. Best viewing spots include Lazy Days South, Burdines, Marathon Marina and Sombrero Marina Dockside. KEY LARGO

Sunday, Dec. 9

KEY COLONY BEACH

Christmas lights on outriggers, Santa’s elves and brightly lit deck displays highlight the festivities during the Key Colony Beach Boat Parade. Set to begin at the 7th Street canal, the parade is open to all boats, and the route visits canals and cuts, and passes city hall.

Great viewing spots include Sadowski Causeway at MM 53.5 and the dock area behind city hall and the post office. Free registration, cash prizes for winners, after-party at Key Colony Inn, overnight dockage available. To register: 305-841-9812.

Saturday, Dec. 15

KEY WEST

Lighted and decorated vessels from rowboats to tall ships proceed around Key West’s Historic Seaport and harbor areas. Festivities are to begin at 6 p.m. with the children of Gerald Adams Elementary Steel Your Heart Band. Parade is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Holiday revelers can watch and applaud from bars, restaurants and resorts in and around the Historic Seaport as vessels of all shapes and sizes dazzle the crowd.

TREE RAFFLE Zonta Club hosts annual event

T

he annual Holiday Festival of Trees sponsored by the Zonta Club of Marathon features 43 trees this year — from small to towering, from all natural driftwood creations to kid-friendly trees covered in Disney stuffed animals. There’s even one giant tree, cleverly wrapped in red tulle to resemble Santa. The event helps the club help Marathon with special attention to women’s causes. Tickets are still available for the gala which features a prime rib dinner and music by the Moon Dogs.

READ | MORTDECAI TRILOGY Kyril Bonfiglioli’s “Mortdecai” books are as good, if not funnier, than those of P.G. Wodehouse in that Bonfiglioli doesn’t shy away from the funny parts of sex and violence (and some surprisingly touching moments, too). The main character, Charlie Mortdecai, is “loved and respected by all who know me — slightly” and he is matched in his capers with faithful manservant, Jock.

These books are bang-your-head-onthe-wall funny. You will find yourself reading aloud passages to people who cannot care, and yet still be unable to finish the sentences for snorting. (We have not seen the Johnny Depp movie based on these novels, and therefore have no comment.)

SEE AND LISTEN SHARE YOUR GIFTS When Billie Eilish (“Ocean Eyes”) and her brother/musical partner, Finneas, were asked to compose a song to accompany the new animated Apple Holiday film “Share Your Gifts,” they found themselves in unfamiliar terrain. “It was very different because we had never written a song about empowering yourself,” Eilish told Beats 1. The clip tells the story of a girl who is bursting with ideas but is afraid to share them. Eilish’s song, “Come Out and Play,” took inspiration from the character. “It’s very Christmassy and cute,” she says.

National Marine Sanctuary Foundation The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is the national marine conservation nonprofit partner for the National Marine Sanctuary system and it includes the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, established in 2000, raises awareness of and support for national marine sanctuaries and their vital role in ensuring a healthy ocean that drives the local economy and way of life. There are 13 national marine sanctuaries across the United States, including the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary which covers 3,000 nautical miles of the Florida Keys.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation promotes citizen science, research, conservation, education and community engagement to protect coral reefs and marine habitats, preserve places of cultural significance, and conserve our maritime history and heritage.

yana Longa explains: Dolphins are trained to do a variety of different behaviors through a process called “operant conditioning.”

At the Dolphin Connection in Hawks Cay Resort, we use operant conditioning to increase desired responses.

For example, to train a behavior such as tail walk you would need to start with a principle called targeting. We ask the animal to follow a “target,” which could be something as simple as our hand.

When the dolphin moves to touch our hand, we give them a reward — a rub, a toy, or even a fish. Eventually we increase the height and the distance of the target and start using the “target pole” to create the desired behavior, such as the tail walk. The target pole is used as an extension of our arm and is basically a long pole with a buoy attached to its end.

We are privileged to spend our days interacting with these amazing marine mammals, while educating the public about the importance of marine conservation.

Working as a marine mammal specialist is a very rewarding job, as each day offers not just a new training, but also a new learning experience. The names of our dolphins are: Balla, Tatem, Hastings, Chinook and Lucky.

I have a bachelor’s in psychology from East Tennessee State University. And I completed two marine mammal internships before getting my first full-time position at Atlantis the Palm in Dubai. After six years in Dubai, I returned to the United States and started working for Dolphin Discovery at Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City Beach, Florida.

After a year in GWMP, I was offered a job here, in the Florida Keys and I am currently working as a supervisor of animal training at the Dolphin Connection in Hawks Cay Resort.

lorida is home to an incredibly diverse variety of wildlife.

And there are some interesting animals that make the Sunshine State their home as well. One of the more interesting — and frustrating — is the common land crab. The rest of the nation may have gophers, but we here in South Florida and the Keys get to experience the holes left by this digging land crustacean.

They can be extremely annoying.

Just when the homeowner gets his garden, yard, or landscaping feature laid out and realized to perfection, he finds the hole (or more likely, holes) that the land crabs dug between the brand new plants. Even worse, people living in areas of Florida where it’s possible to grow and maintain an actual lawn get land crab burrows underneath the grass layer that remain unseen, invisible until the homeowner or her guests step on some grass that gives way and causes a twisted ankle (or worse).

The good news is that land crabs can be “harvested” from Oct. 15 through May 15. The bad news is that they are a protected class of crustacean. I’ve never eaten one, although I’ve heard they’re not bad with melted butter. Probably better than iguana…

Let’s remember that Florida is home to some annoying human wildlife as well. One would have thought that after the 2000 Florida election debacle, Broward County might have implemented procedures and measures to ensure something like that would never happen again. That’s just one Flori-Duh example.

Florida is home to a Palm Beach County mega-developer named Glenn Straub, a hard-nosed businessman with a taste for younger women. But after the romantic relationship ends, the legal relationship begins. From the Palm Beach Post: “Former Wellington resident Jessica Nicodemo, 34, and Lacy K. Bridges, 24, of Charleston, S.C., accuse Straub, 72, of filing frivolous lawsuits against them as revenge for breaking off romantic relationships with him, court documents show.”

That’s right — he sued them, as well as three other younger women, for basically breaking his heart. He did claim other grounds, like not returning “company-owned” jewelry or not repaying “loans.” I swear I’m not making this up. It really puts a damper on the whole “sugar-daddy” career path for young women. (Please detect the

sarcasm intended here.)

Florida, Key Largo actually, is home to a driver who (allegedly) really doesn’t like paying tolls on South Florida toll roads. Admittedly, JOHN there are a whole BARTUS bunch of toll roads, is the mayor of but user fees are the City of Maraamong the most thon. He also is justifiable metha musician who performs around ods of financing public infrastructown. For more ture projects. For see johnbartus. com those who didn’t hear about this (allegedly) unhappy motorist, it seems as if his dissatisfaction with financing Florida’s road “improvements” diverted him into a legal wrong lane. From Miami’s CBS 4: “Miami-Dade police said 70-year-old Robert Craig Davis was caught on dashcam using technology to dodge tolls while driving his maroon Chrysler Pacifica.”

A pair of toll-paying motorists observed a maroon Pacifica (allegedly) owned by Mr. Davis “…with its license plate covered while it went under a row of toll cameras on the Dolphin Expressway.” They also observed, “After getting clear of the toll by plate cameras, the driver activated a device, lifting the black cover off the license plate.” They recorded a video of this and sent it in to CBS 4 News, who then made it available to Lt. Alex Camacho of the Florida Highway Patrol. Davis was arrested, but denies using the license plate cover the Highway Patrol seized from his vehicle.

That’s actually pretty brilliant compared to the Jensen Beach man who told his arresting officers that burglars broke into his home and left behind the marijuana, cocaine and a bong inside his home. From TCPalm.com: “Brant Williams, 54, also told Martin County sheriff’s officials he ‘worked for a high government official in China for 30 years,’ according to sheriff’s records of the Nov. 1 incident.” He told deputies, “… someone broke in and put the drugs there. He said deputies should ‘look’ at his girlfriend and another friend.” How nice it is that he threw his girlfriend under the bus…

That’s almost as bad as suing a former girlfriend for breaking your heart… and with apologies to Tim Allen, it’s Pure Flori-Duh!

he holidays are a time that folks come flocking to the Florida Keys: some family, some friends, some tourists unloading from tour buses and cruise ships.

And we love them! Until … we need to escape.

Take a look at the calendar months ahead with your loved ones (or maybe just by yourself) and think about a day or two that it would be nice to get the heck out of Dodge. Maybe the return drive will come with a renewed sense of holiday spirit and a happiness to be back home. Here are some options:

FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS “NIGHTGARDEN” From Nov. 23 through Jan. 6, Keys residents have a dazzling winter spectacle for the family at their fingertips. The NightGarden comprises acres of tropical plants illuminated, adorned, and even punctuated by holograms, to create a one-of-a-kind “winter wonderland” experience.

It’s the inaugural year for this evening enchantment, and Fairchild bills it as having “unbelievable live effects such as holographic butterflies and floating orchids,” and even a “Wise Talking Tree and Flying Fairies.” I can’t imagine a child whose eyes wouldn’t light up at that description. Only about an hour’s drive from Key Largo, it could make for an evening excursion or, if you’d rather, stay at the nearby Miami Marriott Dadeland or the Aloft Miami Dadeland. The NightGarden is open (you guessed it) nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, $28 for adults and $20 for kids under 10. Travel Time: 1 hour and 10 minutes from Key Largo.

There’s no better place to get a feel for the holiday season and some fun with animals than at Zoo Miami every Friday and Saturday from now to Dec. 29. The park transforms into a delightful display of shimmering lights and dazzling animal-shaped lights for children and families to see throughout the kingdom. While lights glisten through the park at night, watch the animals open their Christmas presents during the day. There are also carousel rides, photos with Santa, cookies and hot cocoa and more. Zoo lights every Friday and Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Zoo Miami is located at 1 Zoo Blvd., just about an hour from the Upper Keys. There are plenty of places to stay for the night, including Holiday Inn Express & Suites, La Quinta Inn & Suites and Candlewood Suites.

Travel time: 2 hours from Marathon

THE DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK Take the Yankee Freedom III Catamaran from Key West or, if budget allows, the Seaplane, for a quicker trip. The Dry Tortugas offer some of the best snorkeling close to the Keys, beautiful pristine beaches, and lots of history.

Fort Jefferson has a fascinating story to tell, including the imprisonment of Dr. Samuel Mudd (yes, of “my name would be Mudd”), who was imprisoned for his involvement in the assassination of President Lincoln. Overnight camping is also available in the Dry Tortugas, for a romantic night under the stars or an adventuresome romp for the outdoorsy family. Exploring the undeveloped expanse of the islands is sure to take you away from the hustle and bustle of Keys crowds. Day trips are $180 for adults, $125 for children, or overnight camping is $200 for adults, $145 for children. Travel time: 2 hours 15 minutes from Key West by boat.

FAMILY PAINTBALL CENTER Located on the edge of the ‘Glades, due west of Miami on 137th Avenue, is the Family Paintball Center. If you’re looking for something to do with your tweens and teens over the holiday break — this is it. Forty dollars per player covers the “marker” (or gun), mask, goggles, air tank and three hours of playtime. You may soon find yourself buying more paintballs at $20 per bag of 500 rounds. (Players must use the facility’s specially formulated paintballs.

No exceptions.) There are group discounts available, up to 15 percent for 30 players. The fields have plenty of barriers to make it fun, like 50-gallon drums, old cars and sandbags.

omedian Paula Poundstone points out life’s absurdities, of which, she will be the first to say, there is an endless supply. Her observational humor has fueled a comedy career that has spanned decades and shows no sign of slowing down.

Back at the Key West Theater for a second time on Friday, Dec. 7, Poundstone comes armed with her witticisms about people, kids, animals and, yes, politics. After 38 years, she is a comedy veteran and has the wit and stories to prove it.

“I’m about audience participation, so I am never really sure what’s going to come out. I leave about one third up in the air,” said Poundstone, making sure no two are alike.

Part of Poundstone’s charm is her ability to react from the vibe of the room. And nowadays, Poundstone admits, the comedy trend is either to politics or shy away from it. “I don’t want things to be fractious, but it seems fairly obvious what side of politics I am on. I have wrestled with trying not to tell people I’m a Democrat, but they know it. It would be pretty hard not to.” When it comes to using it in her

act, she said, “My generation of comics did not invent politics in comedy. It’s always been there. ... I feel it’s kind of overrated, kind of second-grade humor sometimes.”

Poundstone relies on her observational humor for the true laughs. “I feel stronger about pointing out hotel shampoo and conditioner bottles being labeled in larger font than other things.” The comedian most recently is known for her gig as panelist on NPR’s number 1 show, “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” (She had just left the NPR studio after recording messages for peoples’ answering machine

Poundtstone gives thanks to the great Robin Williams for the initial boost in her career back in the ‘80s. Her resume now includes multiple HBO specials, a spot on every late night show from 1979 to present, two bestselling books, and multiple awards including the American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic. But accolades aside, Poundstone is like anyone, just an audience to her own life.

“I try not to watch MSNBC. It can cause bowel problems,” said Poundstone. “It’s proven, because all the ads are geared towards bowel problems.” Fair point. And as for the state of our culture, she admitted, “I love it when Republicans come to my show; we all need to hug one. As people, we have to realize we have far more in common than not and laughter is our coping mechanism.” And like any great comedian, Poundstone just wants to make people laugh.

ote Marine Laboratory’s inaugural Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration is set for Saturday, Dec. 1 at Founders Park in Islamorada. The fun and activities go from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With food, drinks, a kids’ zone and conservation and artisan vendors, it’s a good time for all. Likeminded folks get together to share ideas and a beautiful afternoon.

Mote is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution made up of renowned scientists who believe that conservation and sustainable use of oceans originates with research and education. Beginning in a tiny shed in Placida, Florida, Mote’s efforts have expanded to include a gamut of programs, campuses and outreach.

Also in the Keys is Mote’s International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration. Located in the lower Keys, the center has easy access to a variety of habitats including reefs, seagrass meadows, mangrove forests and communities. Research and education programs conducted at the center include coral reef restoration, coral reef science and monitoring, marine aquaculture research and ocean acidification. Mote has also added its presence to the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center in the Upper Keys with a coral reef expedition exhibit.
